Speaker 1 (00:00):
What should be a pretty palatable evening for baseball takes
place tonight at UFCU dish Fawkfield. Good afternoon, everybody, Welcome
to the program here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under
the Zone.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
My name is Craig Way.

Speaker 1 (00:12):
Thank you for joining us as we bring you the
program today from UFCU dish falk Field. Tonight, the Texas
Longhorns take on the Vcaros at the University of Texas
Riereo Graham Valley UTRGV, as we commonly refer to the Vicaros.
There's a couple of interesting wrinkles about this game that
we're going to get to as the program goes forward.
But there's plenty of other things on our plate that

(00:34):
will continue to discuss today, football, basketball, baseball, different things
to discuss, and of course discussing it with us as
always the producer of the program, Cameron D. Parker, the
dal Labverirth Certificate stands for Dallas, as in his favorite
pro football team that he does that he chooses not

(00:56):
to follow because he's frustrated with Jerry.

Speaker 2 (00:58):
Jones and management and ownership of that nature.

Speaker 1 (01:00):
But today Cam, does Dallas stand for the Dallas Wings
or does it stand for dumb ass, Nico, we get
a media availability and that did not allow cameras for
recording devices.

Speaker 2 (01:17):
Mavericks general manager, Good afternoon.

Speaker 3 (01:20):
Good afternoon, Craig. How about that? Dumbfounded? When I saw
the report that Nico Harrison was holding a meeting with
select members of the Dallas media, but they could not
record it. They couldn't bring tape recorders, they couldn't record
it with their phone, they couldn't video record it.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
I can't believe that.

Speaker 3 (01:38):
Here we are a month, two months removed from the
Leucodonta's trade, and Nico Harrison still does not get it.
I mean, it just screams insecurity, Craig. It screams of
This team is trying to defend their actions. But guess what,
you can't defend it. You've lost the trade, you've lost
the fan base. But they keep doing things that makes
it worse, in worse. I can't believe it.

Speaker 1 (02:01):
Yeah. The thing I guess that really gets me is
what I'm not understanding about this is that surely, surely
he and the Dumont family and all of that Patrick
Dumont and the rest of the ownership group and all
that stuff, surely they understand now if they didn't initially,

(02:27):
how horrible this has become in terms of public relations,
for the organization, for the fan base, all those things.
And even if even if your idea was just to
try to make money off the whole thing, and he
really didn't care about the players, which that seems to
be screaming the message coming from them. But even if

(02:47):
that is indeed the case, wouldn't you want to do
something to at least put a little damage control on it?
And maybe the damage is irreparable now, But if you
thought it couldn't get worse, it gets worse with a
thing like this where somebody says, yeah, I'll meet with

(03:07):
some members of the media, but there's to be no
recording of this and uh and no photography and.

Speaker 2 (03:14):
None of that.

Speaker 1 (03:15):
What's the point I mean if you're maybe he's you know,
with whatever some members of the media to explain.

Speaker 2 (03:26):
So, does that.

Speaker 1 (03:26):
Mean that they in turn are not allowed to write
about that or talk about that on the air or
on camera or whatever. Is that what that means? If so,
what's the point of even having that meeting? Because if
you're thinking that maybe somewhere down the line that that
a columnist or whoever is in there is going to

(03:50):
do you a solid by not bashing you. That's that's
silly in its own right. So anyway, I when I
saw that, I was like, really so because maybe this
is on a media level kind of like what they
did last week. And here's what I mean by that
cameraon I listen. I understand the motivation behind doing the

(04:17):
tribute video to Luka Dancic. I think it would have
made them look worse if they just ignored it. So
I think they had to do that, and it was
really well done what they I don't know if they
were expecting this, but whether they were or not, the

(04:38):
unexpected consequence for a lot of people, it just made
it worse for fans a lot of times. In a
lot of cases, it just kind of inflamed their passions
all the more. You can't really control it at that point.
If you're the Mavericks. They didn't really have a choice.
They had to do the tribute video, even though it
was going to make people a lot of angrier. Well,
in this case, it's like, maybe we can, you know,

(05:04):
do a little damage control and have Nico explain it
to some of the media that covers the team. Extensively
or whatever, the select media whatever explain it. But all
that's going to do is backfire on the rest of
the media who aren't invited, who don't get to write about,
who don't get to record it. So that's the unintended

(05:26):
consequence there. So I I just I keep seeing them
blow one toe off of their foot time with this,
with every move they make. It's it's unfathomable to me
that an organization with professional people, whether you whether you
know basketball or not, and who is it Patrick Dumont

(05:48):
Cameron who readily admitted to not knowing you know whatever
for a pick and roll from picking his nose or whatever.
Even if you don't know basketball, you've got to have
some sense of understanding what moves like this are gonna
do in terms of alienating your fan base, your local media,

(06:09):
and even some national media.

Speaker 3 (06:11):
It's almost like they want to control the narrative by saying, Okay,
we're gonna have these select people come in, these reporters
that we know, but we want to tell the story
our own way.

Speaker 2 (06:21):
But the thing is, Craig, you can't do that.

Speaker 3 (06:24):
The story's been told and Nico Harrison and Rick Welts,
the CEO, who also spoke with this select group of
Dallas media.

Speaker 2 (06:31):
They don't understand it that you've already lost to trade.

Speaker 3 (06:34):
No matter how many times you explain it, you're not
gonna be able to make it make sense.

Speaker 4 (06:39):
Right.

Speaker 3 (06:39):
It's like when someone cheats on their partner and they
keep coming back with different excuses in time and time again,
you know you've already cheated. It's too late, You've already
treated Luca Doncis. It's too late. And in one of
the comments from Rick welts that and it's funny because
it's screamed Jerry Jones and I think back to the
last this end of season press conference, and it may

(07:01):
have been even before the season started with Jerry Jones.
I think it was an aug nerd Well, Jerry Jones
and Stephen Jones and Mike McCarthy, and it may have
been forget Clarence Still may have asked the question about
can you sense the fan base is now apathetic? And
Stephen Jones said, well, no, look at our season ticket sales.
They've gone up right, which is complete bull crap because

(07:24):
we all know Dallas Cowboys fans are more apathetic than ever.
But Rick Welt said in this media Craig when asked
about you know, the the fiery fans and all of that,
and you know, the Channing fire and Eco and losing
the fan base, and Welt said, well, you know, actually
look at our season ticket Reneal Rate, it's gone up.
They don't get it, Craig Welts, Jerry Jones, Stephen Jones.

(07:46):
They don't understand what is happening to the city of
Dallas and how these two franchises are completely losing their
fan base for two separate reasons, but also two similar
reasons in that they're being run by brain dead people.

Speaker 1 (08:04):
Yeah, I just it's just and I didn't think that
it could be made much worse than it has been made,
so it's.

Speaker 2 (08:17):
But apparently it has been.

Speaker 1 (08:18):
That's why I said, it's unfathomable to meet professional people
not understanding the damage that goes to your organization, whether
you're you know, a basketball purist or no basketball or whatever,
but just understanding how that alienates large groups of people.

(08:39):
And now they've you know, added it to those of
the media who are not allowed to be present for that.
You know, that's you're not going to win any friends
or influence anybody. By doing that. So anyway, that's it's made.
Let me put it to you this way, Cameron. It
has been well established on this program that the NBA
team you root for is the Oklahoma City Thunder. Given

(09:02):
that you're a long suffering and I do emphasize the
words suffering Cowboys fan, what do you think that fans
are like in Dallas who've been long suffering Cowboys and
Mavericks fans. What they're going through now with two owners
who continually alienate the fan base, at least the Rangers.

(09:26):
You know, when they when they stumble over themselves, they
try to make it right. And they made it right
in the most obvious way by winning a world championship
in twenty twenty three, So they bought themselves a few
years of grace, I think, but even with some of
the news that they've made in the past. But this,
you know, the Mavericks get to the NBA Finals a

(09:47):
year ago, and I think folks were excited about what
could come with healthy bodies, and then this deal comes
and it just starts to blow everything up. Can you
imagine what it must be like for long suffering Mavericks
and Cowboys fans?

Speaker 3 (10:02):
Their mental health must be in the gutter right now, Greg,
And hey, you mentioned, you know, the Mavericks and Cowboys.
The Stars are completely collapsing right now. They're on a
six geame losing streak after looking like one of the
best teams in hockey. And then the Rangers, who after
an offseason of spending, can't hit the baseball. So things
aren't going great in Dallas right now for the professional

(10:24):
sports franchises.

Speaker 1 (10:26):
Yeah, it's gonna be interesting to get in. But like
I said, there's hope for the Dallas Wings of the WNBA.

Speaker 2 (10:33):
They had the number one of our all pick in
the draft.

Speaker 1 (10:34):
They took Page Becker's They had what three picks in
the first fourteen. They got Madison Scott from Old Miss
that you know we saw. I called the game at
Ole Miss when Texas played them. You called the game
in the SEC tournament. She's a player. I really like her.
I think that's a that's a good addition to them.
So yeah, I mean there's some you know, maybe there's

(10:56):
some hope for the Dallas Wings if nobody else.

Speaker 2 (11:00):
In the in the.

Speaker 1 (11:02):
Dallas Fort Worth pro sports scene. All right, we've got
some other things to get to. Obviously, we'll talk some
college base Like I said, get some interesting notes about
this Texas UTRGV matchup that might otherwise might kind of
slide under your personal radar, even if you are a
Longhorn baseball fan. Ty Harrington will join us in the

(11:25):
four o'clock hour here in the booth. He's working the
telecast tonight on the SEC network. Plus Tier and Tyle
joined us, and we'll have our weekly conversation about college
baseball and the SEC in the state of Texas and
across the nation.

Speaker 2 (11:40):
So we'll do that as well. Coming up, we have inconceivable.

Speaker 1 (11:43):
This hour as well, so a lot to get to
and as always always you're certainly welcome to reach out
to us.

Speaker 2 (11:51):
You can text the program.

Speaker 1 (11:52):
All you do is just text the word Texas follow
by your question or comment to eight one five three zero.
So that's the word Texas followed by your question or
comment to eight one five three zero. Standard messaging and
data rates may apply. Also, you can reach out to
us via the talkback feature to the iHeartRadio app. The
new and improved iHeartRadio app easy and free to download,

(12:16):
and then you just search AM thirteen under the zone.
When it comes up, you'll see two buttons. One is
a little white like triangle arrow button. That's if you
want to listen to what's going on. But next to
it is a red button with a little white microphone.
You push that button and that activates the talkback feature
where you can leave us a message of up to
thirty seconds. Keep it clean. It is a family program,

(12:37):
but we'll go ahead and air that. Also through the
talkback feature, you'll have a chance to win tickets to
Lady Wilson will tell you about that coming up as well.

Speaker 2 (12:46):
It's a Tuesday afternoon.

Speaker 1 (12:47):
We're at the ballpark here at UFCU Dish fog Field
and this is AM thirteen under the zone here. It
is on this Tuesday, and Texas is to play ut
RGV tonight. Hey also to give folks a chance to
win a pair of tickets to see Lanny Wilson at
Moody Center. Look, I'm not the most up to speed

(13:12):
authority on country music, far from and in fact, but.

Speaker 2 (13:15):
I do know who Landy Wilson is. I've seen Landy Wilson.
You know who Laney Wilson is.

Speaker 4 (13:19):
Sure?

Speaker 2 (13:19):
Yeah, love Landy Wilson.

Speaker 4 (13:21):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (13:21):
Well, we're gonna give away a pair of tickets for
the show on September eighteenth at Moody Center. And here's
how you do it. You download I was just talking
about this a few minutes ago. You download the iHeartRadio
app and you search AM thirteen hundred the zone that
the app is free, easy to download. You just boom
pop up there on the smartphone. You search AM thirteen

(13:43):
hunder the zone. You're gonna see two buttons. One is
a white one like with the shape of a triangle
or an era. That's just to listen to what we've
got going on in the air, and that's quite handy.
But for the purposes of the contest, you want the
other button. It's a red button with a little white microphone.
You tap that and then you leave us a mess
with the keyword that you heard on this program, which

(14:04):
I'm getting ready to give you so again. You you know,
download the iHeartRadio app if you don't already have it,
search AM thirteen under the zone, tap the little red
button with a white microphone on it, and you leave
some message with the keyword.

Speaker 2 (14:18):
Say I was listening to the Cragway Show.

Speaker 1 (14:20):
I heard him say that the keyword yesterday's keyword was truck.
But today's keyword, the keyword is whirlwind. Whirlwind, So that's
the keyword today. Whirlwind.

Speaker 3 (14:37):
Is that the name of a Lady Wilson song? Okay
song album? Who could say? Correct at this point? Just
entering the keyword and you'll find out.

Speaker 1 (14:44):
Right, Okay, all right, So anyway, that's that's how you
do it. That's today's keyword is whirlwind. So again, if
you don't already have the iHeartRadio app, you download it
on your smartphone, really easy to do and it's free,
and then you search AM thirteen.

Speaker 2 (14:59):
Under the zone it comes up, and then.

Speaker 1 (15:02):
You hit the little white button with the red button
with the white microphone in it, and then you leave
us a message with the keyword you heard. We're win
to try to win a pair of tickets for Lady Wilson.
You'd be entered into the drawing if you can do that. Okay,
Non conference Tuesday in college baseball, and I'm going to

(15:24):
talk a little bit about this on the air with
Keith Moreland, and in fact, I'm even going to ask
Jim Shlastnao about this when I visited with him prior
to first pitch tonight. I've been hearing this and reading this.
You know, with regard to Texas that this is quote
unquote it's a short week because they have the game

(15:45):
tonight and then they have a Thursday Friday Saturday series
with Auburn coming in here.

Speaker 2 (15:55):
All of that is true.

Speaker 1 (15:57):
What is also true is that just about every division
college baseball program in the country this week has a
short week because most are in observance of Easter weekend.
Now I don't think it's one hundred percent the case.

Speaker 2 (16:14):
I don't think.

Speaker 1 (16:15):
I don't think that every single college baseball program is
is in observance of Easter Sunday and therefore is not
playing a game on Easter Sunday. There are some that

(16:36):
play on Easter Sunday. I remember, for years in the
Big Twelve Conference there was really only one holdout. Out
of all the schools in the Big Twelve Conference, there
was one holdout and it was Oklahoma State. For years,
Oklahoma State, if they were at home, would play an

(17:00):
Easter Sunday game. And guess what, that's the case again
this year they have a Friday Saturday Sunday series with Houston,
and if I remember correctly, I was told it's because
you know, like with the Major leagues. They get a
big attendance on Easter Sunday. They have a big crowd,
and so they like having that home Easter Sunday date. Now,

(17:24):
I will tell you this, if you're a visiting team,
you're not too crazy about it. You've got to travel
home after playing on Easter Sunday. But they've been like that.
There was also dispute a few years ago between Texas
and Oklahoma State, and there had been a change. It
might even have been when they changed to Josh Holiday

(17:48):
as a head coach or operations director or something like that,
and the operations people for Texas were working like a
year in advance, like you have to do intercollegiate athletic
to get hotel rooms reserved and all that sort of thing.

Speaker 2 (18:03):
So at the time, the Big.

Speaker 1 (18:06):
Twelve had suggested everybody play Thursday, Friday Saturday on Easter weekend,
and the ops folks at Texas asked the operations people
at Oklahoma State, you know, asked the ops people of
Oklahoma State, you know, is this going to be Thursday, Friday, Saturday.
Can we go in and set our set up our

(18:29):
arrangements that way? And they said yes. And then you
get several months on down the road and there was
a different operation staff and they said, oh, no, no, no,
we're playing on Easter Sunday. And they said, no, no, no,
We've already said hotel, Well, we play on Easter Sunday.

Speaker 2 (18:40):
That's just what we do.

Speaker 1 (18:42):
And Texas wound up appealing to the Big Twelve conference
about that, and the Big Twelve said, yeah, you told
them a year ago that it was going to be
Thursday through Saturday, so you've got to play Thursday through Saturday.
But Oklahoma State does like playing on Easter Sunday, and
there's some other programs across the country that'll do that,
but by and large, Easter Sunday is a day off

(19:05):
on the schedule, and and and being a day off
on the schedule means that you play Thursday, Friday, Saturday.
So uh, that'll be the case here with with the
Texas Auburn series, but not only the Texas Auburn series.
Every series, all six series in the SEC will be no,

(19:31):
I stand corrected. There's two that will be Friday Saturday
and Sunday. The sixth of the eight the sixth series
that will be Thursday, Friday Saturday will be Auburn at Texas, Texas,
A and M and Arkansas, Alabama at LSU, Georgia at Vanderbilt,
and Ole Miss at South Carolina.

Speaker 2 (19:53):
Ole Miss, by the way, just lost. I had it,
had it on a monitor here.

Speaker 1 (19:56):
Just lost a non conference home game to a sub
five hundred little rock team that is not good for
your RPI Arkansas Pine Bluff or Arkansas Little Rock. Little Rock,
Little Rock just beat them seven to three. Yeah not
and on Miss number eleven now and number eleven in
the country. So yeah, they just they just lost. It

(20:20):
just happened. Now seven to three is the final Little
Rock beat on Miss with that but anyway, uh, those
six series on Miss at South Carolina, Georgia at Vanderbilt,
Alabama at LSU Texas and M in Arkansas, Oklahoma at Missouri,
and Auburn at Texas our Thursday Friday Saturday. There are
two series that are Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and these

(20:42):
are set up for television. One of those is Kentucky
at Tennessee, even though their game on Easter Sunday is
just an SEC.

Speaker 2 (20:51):
Network Plus game.

Speaker 1 (20:53):
But Kentucky at Tennessee and Knoxville is Friday Saturday Sunday.
The other series that is Friday, Saturday and Sunday is
Florida at Mississippi State, and that entire series is televised
over the ESPN SEC family of networks. And like Friday Night,

(21:15):
the game's on SEC Network, just regular standard SEC network,
not SEC Network Plus. The Saturday night game is ESPN
two and the Sunday afternoon game is ESPN two. Now,
this is against the thirteenth and fourteenth place teams in
the conference. Right now, Mississippi State's five and ten in

(21:37):
the league and that's coming off taking a weekend series
from Alabama. Florida is four and eleven, and that's coming
off sweeping Missouri over the weekend. But it's Mississippi State
twenty two and fourteen, Florida twenty four and fourteen. Mississippi
State's five and ten in the league, Florida's four and
eleven the league, and all three games are going to
be on linear platforms. In other words, it's not going

(21:58):
to be on the streaming s SEC Network Plus. In
case you're wondering with regard to Texas, Thursday's game with
Auburn is SEC Network Plus. Friday's game is SEC Network
Plus and a Saturday's game is SEC Network plus all
three games between number one Texas and number eight Auburn

(22:19):
the number they're as high as number six and one
of the polls, but all three of those games are
on the streaming platform channel there.

Speaker 2 (22:30):
So that's that's just to let you know.

Speaker 1 (22:33):
You know, it's a busy time obviously in college baseball,
but some of these programming decisions from the SEC and
the ESPN family networks are with the mindset that they
try to get every team on the linear channels at
least a couple of times, and in the case of

(22:54):
this Florida Mississippi State series, all three games. Now, this
was done back some time when Florida was expected to
be a contender at a good team. Remember, Florida started
off as a top ten team. They completely fell off
the radar. They're not ranked right now, but they do
have a little bit of momentum coming off sweeping a
really bad Missouri team that is er and fifteen in

(23:15):
the league right now, the teams with the momentum in
the conference right now, really and truly, yes, you could
say Texas, even though they didn't sweep Kentucky, they won
the series and they've not dropped a series this year,
either conference or non conference, or twenty nine and five. Overall,
theyre thirteen and two. Arkansas dropped two of three at Georgia,

(23:38):
but they're only one game back. Tennessee has a little
bit of momentum. They won two of three in their series.
Georgia has some momentum having won two out of three
after being swept by Texas week before going backward. Is
LSU at ten and five having been swept by Auburn,
and Auburn really does have the momentum right now at
nine and six in the league coming in. So for

(24:03):
those who said, well, Texas has really played its most
difficult series at home.

Speaker 2 (24:07):
It's worked out that way.

Speaker 1 (24:09):
Mississippi State was not viewed in that prism at the
start of the season, and that's where Texas played its
first ever Southeastern Conference series, and it was a sweep
and it worked out. Missouri was not expected to be
a contender, but I don't think anybody expected them to
be oh to fifteen at the midway mark Conference playing.
Texas swept that series, and then, of course Georgia was

(24:29):
number three in the country. LSU was number two in
the country. LSU took the Friday night game from Texas
and then the Long Orangs one Saturday Sunday Georgia. They
swept all three games of that series. So it's worked out.
Now here's where the rubber is going to meet the
road for the Long Worns. You have Auburn coming in
right now, Auburn coming off a series sweep of LSU.

(24:53):
Then you're going to play that other team that has
momentum right now.

Speaker 2 (24:57):
That's Texas A and M.

Speaker 1 (24:59):
The Aggie who started one and nine in the league
have won five in a row in conference play and
six in a row overall. So Texas A and M
is now six and nine in the league. Yes, they're
tied for twelve or eleventh, I guess you would say
in the league right now with Kentucky at six and

(25:22):
nine in the conference. But they've put their head back
above water in overall at twenty and fifteen, and they've
also won seven other last ten And it is, after all,
what do you call it the Cotton Holdings lone star
showdown rivalry series? It's Long Orange v Aggies, and there's

(25:44):
that extra bit of incentive A and M. What would
Jim schlas Nagle and you know and Nolan Kane and
Max Wiener and other members of Schlass's staff coming over
to Austin. Michael Early initially was coming over and then
was off for the head coaching job and was on
the Texas coaching staff what one day, and then went
back over to A and M to be the head
coach there. So there's all of that emotional incentive going

(26:07):
at So Texas has Auburn, a hot Auburn team coming in.
They have a road game in between down in San Marcus.
They're only midweek non conference road game. They play at
bobcat Ballpark in San Marcus. And of course we know
Texas State won the midweek game here back a couple

(26:29):
of weeks ago, so you had that sandwiched in between
the Auburn and Texas A and M series. Then they
have another non conference game. I think it's against Prairie
View at home after that, as I look at the scheduled, yes,
it would be.

Speaker 2 (26:47):
Against Prairie View on the twenty ninth, and then they
go to Arkansas.

Speaker 1 (26:51):
So that's gonna be and two of their final three
series of the season in conference play or on the road.
They have five series left, three hundred home two are
on the road. Well, they have back to back home
series and then they have a road series in Arkansas.
They have Florida here on the final weekend of the

(27:12):
regular season for home games, and then they and then
they go to Norman to finish out the regular season
in Oklahoma. So anyway, there's still a lot to be done,
a lot to be accomplished. That's one thing that James
loastn Negle has pointed out repeatedly, not only that this
is a team that has been really beaten up by injuries.

(27:33):
Max Belue with the thumb injury, probably out until probably
the conference tournament. I hope you have him back by then.
There's maybe a little bit of outside of hope, maybe
he can heal up and be back perhaps for the
Oklahoma series. But but no promises there no promises on
that or even that he'd be ready for the conference tournament.

(27:56):
And whoter Alabama we don't know yet. And then you
have Adrian Rodriguez who had that edema, that blood bruised
thing right.

Speaker 2 (28:07):
At the handmad bone. At least he didn't fractal the
handmade bone.

Speaker 1 (28:11):
He's been able to come back and take left handed swings,
but that's obviously going to limit his ability to be
in the lnup only against rocky handed pitching for that,
and they've worked him some of the outfield as well.

Speaker 2 (28:23):
As the age.

Speaker 1 (28:25):
Uh So you have that, and then hopefully Ethan Mendoza's okay.
He really got banged up in the Sunday game at
Kentucky last weekend rolled over on the shoulder making a
diving attempt and a stop of a ball.

Speaker 2 (28:40):
Hopefully he's all right as well.

Speaker 1 (28:41):
We'll try to find out some more about them than
we will before we take care for the baseball game tonight.
Up next, however, we have Indcevable on AM thirteen under
the Zone, second hour of the program. Here on thirteen
under the Zone, as we come away from UFCU Dish
fogg Field, Texas Longhorns set to host the Macaros of
ut Rio gram Valley tonight. You'll hear that on one

(29:01):
O three point one FM, Austin's eighty station, and so
to come your way on one oh three point one
FM six fifteen pregame start time six thirty is the
first pitch on that one round Rock Express Baseball at
eight o'clock.

Speaker 2 (29:15):
I guess what.

Speaker 1 (29:16):
Cam seven point fifty is the pregame start time from Reno,
Nevada as they play the Reno Aces, So that'll be
here on the zone. But one of three point one
FM is where you'll catch an ice gam You can
also hear it obviously on the Texas Longhorns app, the
LHN app, and you can connect to it from the
iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 2 (29:33):
Very easy to do.

Speaker 1 (29:34):
One thing, I want to mention a note here and
then we'll take a break and I'm because I'm going
to run down and visit with Long Horns head coach
Jim Slasnagel here and we'll let you hear some of
the comments coming up here in a few minutes. But
we did a lot on the Masters yesterday with Rory
McElroy finally completing the career Grand Slam, dramatic victory and

(30:00):
all of that. Cam, have you seen what's happening with
him with the prize.

Speaker 2 (30:05):
Money, the four point two million dollars?

Speaker 4 (30:09):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (30:09):
Have you seen what's happened with that? Well, let's bring everything.
So it was a record breaking four point two million
dollars or in British money three point three million pounds,
largest perse in Master's history.

Speaker 2 (30:23):
That was a twenty one million dollar perse.

Speaker 1 (30:27):
But I felt compelled to bring this up because what
is today today's tax day?

Speaker 4 (30:32):
Right?

Speaker 1 (30:32):
M hmm?

Speaker 2 (30:33):
Well, Rory lives in Florida.

Speaker 1 (30:35):
As we know, Florida, like Texas, does not have a
state income tax, but his winnings are fully subject to
you as federal taxes. According to tax expert Paul Barram,
the winnings in Augusta face a thirty seven percent federal
tax rate, and additional charges will bring the effective rate

(30:59):
to over forty two percent. What does that mean about
one point eight million dollars will be pulled out of
his prize money.

Speaker 2 (31:11):
He's still taking home two point four million.

Speaker 1 (31:14):
Uh but yeah, he's gonna he's gonna lose a good
chunk of change out of that due to taxes now
from the department of perspective, since we can all keep perspective,
uh A. Sports finance professor Rob Wilson said, quote. While
federal and state taxes in the US could see McCrory
lose anywhere from forty to fifty forty five to fifty

(31:36):
percent of his winnings, the symbolic and commercial value of
winning the Masters far outweighs the immediate net income loss.
Even after tax, a first place prize from around two
point seven million would still leave maccrory with approximately one
point five million uh to in take home earnings. More importantly,

(31:59):
this victory now come pleachs his career Grand Slam, unlocking
major off course earnings and further endorsements from the likes
of Nike. The longer term commercial upside from sponsors, branding,
and new markets is far more valuable than the prize
check itself. And then when you add to it cam
that his prize money for his career now exceeds one

(32:20):
hundred and sixty million dollars, He's up there with Tiger
is one of only two golfers to break the one
hundred million dollar barrier in PGA tourer earnings. So, in
other words, don't shed any tears for Rory, but understand
he ain't taking all that prize money home with him.

Speaker 3 (32:36):
Yeah, I'm about to say, like, I'm not really shitting
any tears because you know, five majors, you know, he
wins a couple of times on the PJA Tour, plus endorsements.
He's fine, you know, he's fine, and I'm sure he's
just happy to have a green jacket in his closet
versus the what though he's gonna have end up with
three point one million dollars then or less than that?

(32:56):
He said one point seven and it's taking out or
one point two one point seven is coming out.

Speaker 1 (33:02):
But you know, and here's something else, I've read some
notes about the green jacket.

Speaker 2 (33:06):
I didn't you know.

Speaker 1 (33:07):
I didn't know, and I found out earlier last week
that you only get to keep It's kind of like
the Stanley Cup. You only get to keep the jacket
for one year, and then it goes back into the rack,
it goes.

Speaker 2 (33:18):
Back into the closet.

Speaker 1 (33:19):
What I also did not know was that the green
jacket that they put on him was not the one
that's going to actually be his and his name. It's
a green jacket that belongs to like a club member
that most closely approximates his measurements.

Speaker 2 (33:36):
Thirty eight regular? By the way, is he really thirty eight? Regular?

Speaker 4 (33:41):
Boy?

Speaker 2 (33:41):
Is he in shape?

Speaker 1 (33:43):
Makes me almost ashamed to mention mine because coming up
in a couple of weeks, actually it's probably it's next month.
A little inside of a month is the annual Texas
High School Football Hall of Fame induction banquet and I
serviced mat ceremonies for that. Patrick Mahomes is going in

(34:05):
by the way this year and he's going to be
there for this. It'll be in Waco there next month
in May. And they added something new this year. They
wanted a Hall of Fame blazer, kind of what they
do with the Pro Football Hall of Fame. They want
to the board, and the board voted to award blazers

(34:30):
to all incoming members and then you know some are
in the past and things like that. And they told
me that they wanted to give me a blazer so
that I can also wear the blazer during the ceremony
when I'm serving as master's ceremonies as well as being
inducted as a member of the Texas High School Football
Hall of Fame back in twenty seventeen or twenty sixteen.

(34:54):
So I said, sure, I'm honored, that's great or whatever.
And then they asked me for my measurements and they
had to give them my measurement. It's there so anyway,
but they say they'll have it ready and it's our
good friend Carlton Dixon, the lifetime Longhorn whose company Outstanding
Apparel company is actually is actually putting together these blazers,
and it's supposed to be a really sharp looking gray blazer.

Speaker 4 (35:16):
Cam.

Speaker 1 (35:16):
It won't beat banana yellow or bright orange like bowl
game representative blazers. It's gonna be like a nice, classy
looking gray blazer.

Speaker 2 (35:25):
So I'm okay with that. That'll work, all right, Cam.

Speaker 1 (35:29):
Is gonna take you through the next segment when I
go down and visit with Longhorn's head coach Jim Schlasnankle.
But we will hear from Schloss and coming up in
the next hour, we'll visit Ty Harrington will be here
in the booth with us.

Speaker 2 (35:40):
And we'll talk from college baseball.

Speaker 1 (35:42):
So all of that and more still coming when we
continue from UFCU Dish far Field.

Speaker 2 (35:46):
I'm thirteen under the zone.

Speaker 3 (35:47):
We continue here on this Tuesday afternoon on the Craig
Ways showed Cameron Parkway through Craigway, stepping aside real quick
to visit with Texas Baseball head coach Jim Slostangle. Is
the Texas Longhorns back in Austin this week and weekend
as well and tonight hosting the Vaccaros of the University
of Texas Rio Grand Valley for a non conference matchup

(36:08):
Texas coming off a two out of three series victory
over the Kentucky Wildcats in Lexington, and prepare for a
red hot Auburn Tigers baseball club this weekend. But tonight
six fifteen airtimes six thirty first pitch, and you can
listen to it right here on iHeartRadio Network on one
O three one FM, Austin's eighties station. Later on tonight

(36:33):
seven fifty pm, airtime eight oh five, first pitch the
Round Rock Express. You can hear Rolin Cobray right here
on thirteen hundred this zone. Okay, real quick before Craig
comes up, a couple programming notes for next week NFL
Draft Thursday, seven o'clock, we're gonna hear the names of
possibly three Longhorns called in the first round. In the

(36:57):

is the Texas Football Fan Day Live from DKR. Is

(37:44):
gonna be a lot of stuff going on. There's the

at DKR, but also Longhorn's Game Day, myself, my cars,
Mark Henry and Craig White going to bring you a
special edition of Longhordon's Game Day Live from Daryl K.

(38:07):
Memorial Tech Sorry Daryl K. Royal Texas Memorial Stadium starting
at noon until two pm, So come out. We're going
to talk all things Texas football, some inside information on
how spring practice is going. We're going to visit with
special guests, reporters, all that and more so a lot
to look forward to next week and we ask you
to come out, enjoin us, say hi, I say what's up,

(38:28):
support the show, and enjoy all the fun festivities at
Twin Peach Round Rock and the fun festivities outside of DKR. Okay,
the Nico iam Aliava story is one that I don't
think has surprised a lot of people. It's eventually this
is going to happen right where a star player out
of school was eventually going to hold out. It's been

(38:51):
part of professional sports for decades now and it's starting
to trickle in to college football. It's going to happen,
call basketball, baseball, any other sport where NIL exists, and
I don't think the house settlement is going to fix it.
But one thing's for sure. A lot you know, there's
people who are on the side of Tennessee and Josh
Hopeol there's people on the side of Iamaliava. It's a

(39:14):
lose loose and the latest situation, this is coming from
Pete nkos On on three Sports, is that teams now
are waiting to see if the price tag will drop
for iam Aliava Now. Nico signed an exclusive, in first
of its kind, four year NIL deal with Tennessee as
a senior in High School approximately about an eight million

(39:37):
dollar contract with Tennessee's NIL collective Spire Sports Group, and
he included an upfront payment of three hundred and fifty
thousand dollars. So iam Aliava was set to make about
two point two two point five million dollars going to
be a sophomore of the season. Now, his dad, who
acts as his agent, because Nico does not have an agent.

(40:00):
His dad and his camp and I'm assuming Niko believed
that they could make more money from the NIL front
and more money as in about four or five million dollars,
which is what led to the disagreement with Nico in
Tennessee and Josh Hopel and eventually led to Nico being
dismissed from the football program. Well, you know, we knew

(40:22):
there was gonna be some interest surrounding Nico, who was
a high profile recruit. Even though he didn't have a
fantastic into his season last year in Tennessee, he's still
a high upside quarterback. Wants to get that four or
five million dollar mark. Well, he's not getting it right now.
UNC and there's reports that he was tied to UNC
and Bill Belichick. Well, they have have backed off and

(40:44):
Pete Naikos reporting that there are multiple programs that are
open to sign him if he drops down to the
one million dollar price Tech.

Speaker 2 (40:54):
Now, remember he was going.

Speaker 3 (40:55):
To get two point two to two point five million
dollars at Tennessee this season. Now, if he can't find
another program that's willing to pay that four or five
million dollar mark, he may end up losing money out
of this whole debacle. On three, reporting that UCLA has
emerged as a school in the mix to lend the quarterback.
Remember iam ali Avas from Long Beach, California, UNC at

(41:19):
one time was part of that discussion.

Speaker 2 (41:21):
They have dropped out.

Speaker 3 (41:22):
Now we're here in Tulane possibly as a team that
could be tied to Iamaliyava and USC Notre Dame also
we're in the mix over the weekend, but latest reports
is that they have not confirmed whether or not the
Trojans or the fighting Ours are interested in adding him. Now,
remember he can't come to an SEC school because he

(41:43):
played for Tennessee and because it's passed every first No, sorry,
he can, but he will not be eligible to play
this season. So if he wants to transfer to Georgia
or Oklahoma or whoever, he has to sit out the year.
So that's why he would likely land at another school
like Notre Dame or.

Speaker 2 (41:59):
US or U s LA.

Speaker 3 (42:01):
But spring practice is ending here this week, this next week,
So wherever he ends up, he's going to have to
he's gonna be well well behind in terms of learning
the playbook, the coaches, the players. I mean, he won't
really get his first crack at practicing with the team
until August, So it puts him behind the eight ball,

(42:22):
and it puts whatever team that is trying to sign
him behind the eight ball as well. Just because you
know he's a great quarterback doesn't mean and you know,
great might be carrying a lot of work there. Just
because he's a high potential type quarterback doesn't mean it's
going to work out for both parties. And this just
really in the end ends up hurting Tennessee, it hurts Imaliava,

(42:44):
and it's hurting the whole game of football. But you
know it's I don't really blame Imaliava. I don't blame Tennessee.
The blame resides with the NCAA and how there is
still zero, zero oversight and how any of this is
going to be controlled how it's going to be fixed.

(43:05):
And as of right now, I mean, we're still waiting
on the house settlement, which I believe this Saturday we'll
find out. I believe it's going to go through. But
stuff like this will continue to happen in college football.
It's just a matter of time. It will happen at
a school like Texas because you look at Tennessee, they're
a college football playoff team this past season. Going into

(43:27):
this season, you know, still going to be a very
good football program. But it's not about winning national championships.
It's about how much money you can make. And that's
what happens when you allow these players to make money,
but you do it without any oversight. There's got to
be a way to fix this going forward. And just
an awful situation for Tennessee and for Imliova. And we

(43:50):
heard coach tis Keisha talk about it yesterday during his
media availability where he said he felt for Hopel, he
said he felt for Imaliova, but God to do what's
best for your team going forward. I believe Craig is
back up in the broadcast both at their visiting with
head coach sim Slasnegel.

Speaker 1 (44:13):
Back up here and we'll hear that conversation wish Lass
coming up next next segment, so we'll have that that's
just around the corner. So we'll look forward to bringing
folks that deal. So, and I agree with you, Cam
and what you know, we heard what Sark was saying
about it. This is a difficult position for college football programs,

(44:37):
not just a head coach and not just a student athlete,
but college programs in general to have to deal with
now because.

Speaker 2 (44:47):
There's going to be.

Speaker 1 (44:49):
Advisors, agents, whatever, certainly parents involved.

Speaker 2 (44:54):
Who are going to.

Speaker 1 (44:59):
Exp affect you know, a certain number or certain benefits,
certain things that are now legal and under NCAA rules
to accept. And there will be college football programs who
either they can't afford it, or feel that it sets

(45:21):
a bad example, or for whatever reason, decide that's unacceptable.
So it puts them in a difficult position. And then,
as you pointed out yesterday in the case of Eco
i am Alaiava, here's a guy who his.

Speaker 2 (45:40):
You know, kind of he kind of drew a line
in the sand.

Speaker 1 (45:43):
He and his family his representation about what they needed
to have, what they thought that they needed to have,
and as a result of that, he was told by
Josh Hypel that that was unacceptable. They couldn't do that.

(46:05):
So he misses a practice. He then is kind of
removed from the roster. He goes into the portal and
all of this sudden. As you pointed out, it's kind
of a tough situation on his end because now being
in the portal, he can't what he has to sit
a heere if he's going to transfer inside of it,
So if it's an intra conference transfer, in other words,

(46:26):
if he transfers to another.

Speaker 2 (46:27):
SEC school, m Yeah.

Speaker 3 (46:28):
So at that point, you know, when's the last time
you've seen a player set out a year willingly since
before you know the new transfer rules coming in. So
you think he goes somewhere West coast. But if you're
a team like UCLA or or USC unless you just
have no quarterback going in the fall camp or what
you've seen out of your quarterbacks, I mean, it's a

(46:49):
huge risk to take him because if he's asking for
four million dollars, Craig, you're paying four million dollars. Now
he comes into your locker room, all these guys are
sitting around like, are you kidding me? This kid's making
five million dollars he doesn't know anyone on the team probably,
and now he's only going to have the summer and
fall to get ready for the season.

Speaker 2 (47:06):
It's a huge risk. Yeah. You know, when the.

Speaker 1 (47:12):
When the whole nil thing started, there was a lot
of speculation that you know, quarterbacks or running backs or whoever,
star players might be accruing things that other members of
the team would not beginning. And yet by and large,

(47:34):
we didn't hear of a great deal of issue with
that with regard to football program I did hear about
it with regard to some collegiate baseball programs that had
happened to but with regard to football programs, we didn't
hear an awful lot about it. And then of course
Texas stepped up with its set of collectives and the
pancake factor and all those sort of stuff. So that

(47:56):
and then of course the Texas won fund kind of
you know, through one layer over all of that to
make sure that student athletes were taken care of. So
it wasn't initially as big a concern as a lot
of folks thought about him.

Speaker 2 (48:14):
But this is a different set of circumstances.

Speaker 1 (48:16):
Can because there was an outfront number that everybody has
now seen and heard that it went from two point
four million dollars to four million dollars was the demand.
And now it sticks out like a sore thumb when
he walks into another locker room, whatever school that might be,

(48:38):
to say nothing of the fact that whichever school agrees
to give him that amount of money, or they negotiate
an amount that works, whatever he and he shows up there,
you know, what does that say to the other schools
in that particular schools conference, Because I have a feeling,

(48:59):
as you point that, he's probably not gonna be on
an SEC roster now since they're beyond the deadline on that.
Could be in the Big Ten, could be in the
acc who knows where he might be. But you know,
it might put things in a real uncomfortable spot simply because.

Speaker 2 (49:19):
It stands out by itself. It's not.

Speaker 1 (49:23):
As gray as it would be with a group of
players coming in or recruits coming in.

Speaker 2 (49:30):
Where you.

Speaker 1 (49:33):
Say, well, this group is getting this or this group
is getting that or whatever. But one guy who wasn't
already in the program who comes in, and I think
that's the difference here. One guy who was not already
in the program transfers in with that kind of shall

(49:53):
we say, financial windfall may not sit well with his
newfound teammates or coaches no matter. And coaches, by the way,
can have all the lectures that they want with the
team about hey, you accept this guy, he's your teammate now,
you know, put yourself beyond the money and look at
it like that. They can say that all they want,

(50:14):
but I have a feeling there's probably gonna be some
hard feelings in the locker room regardless of the situation,
simply because the number was out there and because this
guy is standing alone now transferring in because.

Speaker 2 (50:27):
Of that number.

Speaker 1 (50:29):
That's the difference from say, several guys who are already
on the roster and all of a sudden, hey, so
and so getting You're not quite sure maybe he did
hear a number, but these were guys that were already
on the team.

Speaker 2 (50:39):
Here's a guy coming into.

Speaker 1 (50:41):
The program, into the program for that kind of elevated number.
That's where I think the difference lies. And that's where
it could be the challenge.

Speaker 3 (50:50):
And Craig, you wonder about what is the culture at
the team where he transferred to, if they if they
pay what he's asking right, Because I can't really see
a program like Texas or Georgia or Alabama making a
move like this, Like can you imagine Nick Saban willingly
paying a quarterback five million dollars or something like this

(51:13):
after the stunt that his family pulled. And again I'm
not saying it was a right or wrong decision for
im Aliava and in hypol just felt like he had
to make a move at a certain point. But I
do question what the culture will be like at the
program that he does decide to end up if it
actually is the four or five million dollar price tech.

Speaker 1 (51:31):
You know, baseball players will say and I've heard you
know the guy who you're going to be working with
me on the on the broadcast, I Keith Morland say it.
You know a lot of baseball players, they don't begrudge
guys getting what they can get through free agency or whatever.
You get what you can get, you know that that
sort of thing. So there's that, and like you say,

(51:54):
there's each student athlete's kind of got to figure out
what makes the most financial sense to him. That the
problem other the other problem that comes out of this
CAM is that you have the specter, the specter of
the greedy parent or the greedy uncle or that sort
of thing. Whereas the student athlete might not be expecting

(52:17):
that much money or whatever, but there's family members wanting more,
asking for more, demanding more. Whether that's true or not,
and probably in a lot of cases it's not true.
But because of the times that it has been true,
that we've heard about it, it casts that shadow over
a situation like this, So it's it's gonna be really

(52:39):
interesting to see how this thing turns out and how
it rolls out for him and his future teammates as well.
All right, coming up next, I just just a few
minutes ago, I had a visit with Jim Slostangle. You'll
hear that conversation coming up Texas against U t Rio
Grand Valley tonight. And again, I promise I've got some

(52:59):
unique note about this coming up. We'll get to that
when we continue. I'm thirteen under the zone at UFCU
Dish falk Field, Texas and ut Rio Grand Valley to play.
All right, here's a couple of notes, and then we're
gonna hear some words from head coach of Slasnickele Texas
and ut rchiv Our meeting for the sixty second time

(53:23):
Texas has won fifty four of the prior sixty one.
Here's the wrinkles about that. Some of you may remember
that ut Rio Grand Valley won last year's game seventeen
to nine.

Speaker 2 (53:39):
Do you remember much about that game? Cam a little bit.

Speaker 3 (53:43):
I still have a friend that plays for UTRGV, so
he did not play in that game last year year's
recovering from achilles injury. But the last couple ones have
been high octane offensive power games if I remember correctly.

Speaker 1 (53:59):
Yeah, and then last year, of course UTRGV won seventeen nine.
That was the game where David Pierce had Jared Thomas
start the game, went to the mound.

Speaker 2 (54:12):
Yeah, he was the starting pitcher and.

Speaker 1 (54:13):
Went one inning and gave up a home run and
all that kind of stuff. But that was also the
game where I think Texas hit ten batters and walked
nine something like that. They had, you know, they had
a bunch of younger guys go to the mount.

Speaker 2 (54:29):
It did not go well and they lost.

Speaker 1 (54:30):
But here's here's why.

Speaker 2 (54:32):
I bring this up.

Speaker 1 (54:34):
It was the first time that UTRGV had beaten Texas
in baseball since the regionals or what was then called
the district Championship what would now be known as a
regional in college baseball. They snapped a forty eight game

(54:57):
losing streak to Texas, beating them for the first time
since nineteen seventy one. That in nineteen seventy one, the
two teams played in what was called NCA District play
would now be known basically as a regional, And but

(55:18):
you had a field, a smaller field, and the winner
would go to the College World Series in Omaha, and
Texas went in there with future Major leaguers Burt Hooton
and Mike Beard, and Texas lost Game one one to nothing,
and they lost Game two four to nothing, and was
played at Old VJ. Key Field in San Antonio, which

(55:42):
is right by the campus SAT. Saint Mary's University. And
so it was, and in fact it was utrgvs second
ever true road win against Texas and their first since
May thirtieth, nine teen sixty eight, when Texas was playing

(56:02):
at Old Clark Field, and then they had lost forty
four straight true road games against Texas, including the first
thirty nine played at.

Speaker 2 (56:11):
Ufc U Diish falk Field. So it was some history.

Speaker 1 (56:16):
Ut Rio Grand Valley, which back then was known as
Pan American University and then later they were ut pan
America and now UTRGV, but they were known as Pan
American University back then, and they had a legendary coach
in Al Logo Tree, and they had teams that every

(56:38):
year were battling against Texas and other schools for the
opportunity to go to the College World Series. And that
particular year nineteen seventy one, pan AM was able to
break through and they won two great pitching duels one
nothing and four nothing to go to the College World Series.
And the Bronx of pan AM went on and finished

(57:02):
third at the College World Series in Omaha that year
nineteen seventy one.

Speaker 2 (57:07):
It kept Texas from going.

Speaker 1 (57:09):
Cliff Gustafson was in his third season or fourth season
at Texas and it kept Texas from being able to
go to the College World Series as what was then
known as Pan American University now UTRGV beat Texas in
two pitchers duels in San Antonio in NCAA District played

(57:30):
to go to the College World Series.

Speaker 2 (57:31):
Okay, that's one note. Here's the other note.

Speaker 1 (57:36):
Your friend Cameron that was on the roster last year,
is he playing this year for UTRGV.

Speaker 3 (57:40):
Yes, Jacob Sanchez, and I believe he's second or third
in the team in batting average.

Speaker 1 (57:45):
He's the first baseman. Yes, from the Rio Grand Valley's
from San Juan, Texas. I guess he went to Far
San Juan Alamo or DSJ Norton. Yeah, okay, he's list
as a grad student.

Speaker 2 (57:54):
Now.

Speaker 1 (57:55):
Yeah, he's batting three sixty eight with seven homers and
twenty three runs.

Speaker 2 (57:58):
Back in him where you get to meet him?

Speaker 3 (58:00):
We spent a summer in South Dakota together in the
intercollegiate baseball team, the Spiritfit Sasquatch. Me and him were
up there for the summer, so.

Speaker 1 (58:09):
Okay, and he was he was playing, Yes, okay, all right,
all right, So yes, he'll be their starting first baseman tonight.
Have you heard the story about who the starter and left.

Speaker 2 (58:20):
Field is for utr GV. I have not. His name
is Renee Galvan. Uh And if you ask.

Speaker 1 (58:33):
Is he related to the log Worns catcher Ryland Galvan,
you couldn't be any more related than those two guys are.

Speaker 2 (58:41):
They're twin brothers.

Speaker 1 (58:44):
So Rylan Galvan and Renee Galvan will be going up
against one another tonight. Additionally, as we know, Jacque Stewart
of course played at sent in the log with the
Galvan twin brothers. And also UTRGV has a pitcher named

(59:06):
Wyatt Whyatric, who's from Sinton. He's five and zero on
a three point nine era. He's one of their weekend starters,
Wyatt Whyatric. All four of those guys played for Cinton,
all four of them did.

Speaker 4 (59:22):
All four of.

Speaker 1 (59:23):
Them played for, of course, the lifetime Longhorn Adrian Alenes,
who's the head coach at Sinton, and Adrian was a
freshman and an All American as a pitcher on the
two thousand and five.

Speaker 2 (59:36):
National championship team. All four of those.

Speaker 1 (59:39):
Guys played for Adrian Allenes and won the state championship
in baseball UIL four, a state championship right here at
UFCU desh Frog Field back in twenty twenty two, three
years ago. So you've got four former Senton pirates who
will be on the field tonight going against one of
the including twin brothers, Ryland Galvan against Renee Galvin.

Speaker 3 (01:00:03):
And they're identical twins too, correct, They look exactly alike.

Speaker 1 (01:00:08):
Yeah, So I just saw Ryland down in the Dugoutlan
is visiting with coach Lasnagel, and I asked him. I said,
I said, fact or fiction. You had to come up
with somewhere between forty and fifty tickets.

Speaker 2 (01:00:21):
He goes, oh, it's fact.

Speaker 1 (01:00:22):
He said, I had to come up with thirty by
myself and then Renee and other family that they will
have somewhere close to fifty. Wow, family and friends. Just
for those two guys, to say nothing of the other people. Yeah,
so there'll be somewhere between forty and fifty family and
friends members of the Galvans watching tonight's ball game. So

(01:00:44):
that's a really cool deal. It's part of what I
asked Jim Slasnago. But here's the conversation a few moments
ago with the long words head coach. Nice to be
in warm weather.

Speaker 5 (01:00:51):
Yeah, it feels good. It feels good to be a dishfalk.
Feels good to be in warm weather, feels good to
be in Austin, Texas.

Speaker 1 (01:00:56):
You mentioned to Keith on the post game show the
other day, and I chuckled about it because you said
to him, you and I are probably the only people
who remember the show. Mash. I remember very very well.

Speaker 2 (01:01:06):
But I know you must feel.

Speaker 1 (01:01:07):
A little bit like your Your group resembles a bit
of a mash unit.

Speaker 5 (01:01:11):
Yeah it is, and everybody deals with something, you know,
throughout the course of the season. It's just you know,
we we we have a kind of our The best
players on our team are significantly ahead of the other guys.
And and you know, I think any good team needs
their best players to stay healthy and have good seasons,
and we certainly need that. So super proud of the

(01:01:32):
way guys have competed, you know, without aging at full speed,
without max at all, a couple of pitchers, but uh yeah,
we'll just keep taking hits.

Speaker 1 (01:01:41):
But win anyway, right, Like.

Speaker 5 (01:01:43):
I think we talked about I don't know if you
and I talked about it or not, but you can
use the words win win anyway where you can win
any way, right, And.

Speaker 1 (01:01:51):
So there's a lot of different ways to win a game.

Speaker 5 (01:01:52):
And so luckily, at least at the moment, our pitching
has been pretty solid. It just makes the games a
lot closer, which are every every decision gets magnified.

Speaker 2 (01:02:02):
And as the head coach, you.

Speaker 5 (01:02:03):
Know, you're you, you want to try to make the
best decisions you can.

Speaker 1 (01:02:06):
We often talk about that whole next man up mentality thing.
It really gets put to the test on a deal
like this. But but you've rotated enough guys and even
when you had a largely healthy flight up to get
guys comfortable when their time was coming.

Speaker 2 (01:02:20):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (01:02:20):
There, I mean, there aren't too many guys that whether
it be Stewart or Chamberlain or Duplantier or uh you know,
Matt Scott hasn't had a ton ofment beats. But there's
no three or four guys Winfield, three or four guys
that have had They've played enough, and they've played against
the good teams too. It's not just playing against a
bad pitcher or something like that.

Speaker 4 (01:02:39):
You know.

Speaker 5 (01:02:39):
Even the Tuesday games against UTSA, you're in Texas State,
you're seeing a lot of times their weekend arm especially
late in the game, and we could see the same
thing tonight. So uh so yeah, I mean they're they're prepared.
It's just uh, you know, this is this is a
tough league to to uh to be kind of figuring
it out in do you get a.

Speaker 1 (01:02:57):
Kick out of a situation like tonight where you Island's
twin brothers playing and there's forty fifty family members coming
and stuff like those type of unique situations that can
happen occasionally.

Speaker 5 (01:03:07):
Yeah, as long as we're winning, Yeah, it's fun to
smile and giggle and enjoy it winning. But now I mean, yeah,
I enjoy it and did the head coach over there,
Derek matt Locke's very special to me as an assistant coach
with me at TCU for a couple of years and
has bounced a round. Was a multi state champion high
school coach at Flower Mound and then has done do
an awesome job as an assistant coach at West Virginia

(01:03:29):
and then has just done amazing things at U TRGV
and their games are awesome as you. But you've been
down there the crowds and really have good energy, and
we've got a regional club.

Speaker 1 (01:03:39):
So this is just a big night for both teams.
Final thing here, How about your pitching plan? What you
want to do at tonight? How many guys do you
want to see? Depending on how the game.

Speaker 5 (01:03:45):
Unfolds, Well, obviously if being he can have a good night,
well let him keep going. I mean, especially with a
short week, I think any any out that somebody can
get that isn't maybe going to pitch this weekend would
be great, but I'd love to stay away from Atlantis
at all. Easier said than done, and given our offensive situation,
but yeah, I probably would avoid that at all costs.

(01:04:08):
But everybody else, even even maybe Sonya could come right back.
But Moffitt, Jason Floores, you know, there's some other guys
down there we'd like to see pitch.

Speaker 2 (01:04:17):
But got to win the game. Yeah, and it's simplest measure.
Got to win the game.

Speaker 1 (01:04:22):
All right. We'll be back to wrap up hour number
two on thirteen under the Zone. Third and final hour
of the program here from UFCU Dish falk Field here
on thirteen under the Zone. Craig Way with you keep
more a little joining me for the call tonight of
the game, which we'll have Texas playing its first game

(01:04:43):
as the number one ranked team in the nation in
three years twenty twenty two. At one point in Texas
was number one in the country and they did go
to Omaha that year.

Speaker 2 (01:04:54):
But they'll be the number one.

Speaker 1 (01:04:57):
Ranking team in the country and they take the field
tonight against the ca Rors the Carows of the University
of Texas Rio Grand Valley u t RGV Okay quick
trivia question for you there Cameron Parker, Okay, can you
tell me where the campus of.

Speaker 2 (01:05:15):
UTRGV is located.

Speaker 1 (01:05:18):
Edinburgh Burgh Nice, Edinsburgh, Edinburgh unlike it's spelled like Edinburgh, Scotland,
but without the age a little different, right, yeah, and
it lit'tle just plain old Edinburgh, but it's kind of
right in the heart of the Rio Grand Valley region
of the state of Texas. And and that's that's that's

(01:05:40):
where it's located.

Speaker 2 (01:05:41):
That's where their ball club. In last hour we.

Speaker 1 (01:05:43):
Played the conversation, just had a little bit ago with
Jim Schlasnag and he was talking about Derek Mattlock and
what a job he's done at UTRGV. And he said,
the atmosphere down here, because you know you've been there.
I will never forget going down there. I guess it
was twenty twenty one going down there, Keith Morland and
I did. And it was the first time Texas had

(01:06:07):
ever played there. And you know they have ballpark seats.
I think the number was like fifty four hundred, but
they had well over seven thousand fans. I mean it
was jammed down the foul lines and they'd had rain
all day, but they brought in helicopters to drive the field.

Speaker 2 (01:06:27):
They wanted to.

Speaker 1 (01:06:27):
Make sure that that that field was playable, and it
was in Texas ended up winning that ball game that night.

Speaker 2 (01:06:36):
It was a lot of fun down there.

Speaker 1 (01:06:38):
They were actually the ball club was actually hosted by
a Board of Regents member or a former Board of
Regents member for lunch there. So it was a really
cool deal. And they played UTRGV every other time here
except in San Antonio and NCAA tournament plays.

Speaker 2 (01:06:55):
We pointed out.

Speaker 1 (01:06:56):
Last hour, Okay, we opened the show Cameron talking about
this not clandestine but because people knew about it, but
closed door meeting with some select members of the media
and Dallas Maverage general manager Nico Harrison, along with the

(01:07:18):
new CEO, Rick Welts. So it was an hour long
session today, as they said, with a select group of
Dallas based media and was they'd only had one other
He'd only had one other time to visit, and that
was a brief pregame session in Cleveland the day after
the Lukadanchich trade.

Speaker 2 (01:07:38):
But of course, with.

Speaker 1 (01:07:39):
Everything being so inflamed and fans angry, he did he
did a meeting, but they allowed no cameras, no recording
devices of any kind in the deal. Now, Tim McMahon
was one of those select media there and he's got quotes.

Speaker 2 (01:07:59):
Now.

Speaker 1 (01:08:00):
I guess maybe he just wrote very fast or whatever.
But so there's one quote from Nico Harrison where he said,
there's no regrets on the trade. Part of my job
is to do the best thing for the maverage, not
only today but also in the future. And some of
the decisions I'm wanting to make are going to be unpopular.
That's my job and I have to stand by it.

Speaker 2 (01:08:20):
Okay. So then I listen.

Speaker 1 (01:08:23):
Whichever media member asked this question, and I don't know
who it was, and it didn't say, but whoever asked him,
what do you think about all the chance of fire
Nico and everybody on social media screaming fire Nico and
that you need to be fired. What do you think
about that? Hey, listen, I slute you for asking the question.

(01:08:44):
His answer was, well, the beauty of Dallas is it's
a passionate fan base. For us to reach our goals,
we need that fan base. And to be honest with you,
every trade I've made since I've been here has not
been regarded as a good trade, and sometimes it takes
time traded for Kyrie Irving, it was meant with a
lot of skepticism.

Speaker 2 (01:09:03):
It was great.

Speaker 1 (01:09:04):
It as a terrible trade, and you didn't see it
right away, but eventually everyone agreed that it was a
great trade. When I traded for Gafford, Daniel Geffert and Washington,
the MPG, it was like, oh, we gave up too much.
These guys aren't going to help us now. That trade.
You saw the evidence a lot sooner. So I think
a lot of times trades take a little bit of time.
But our philosophy, like I said, going forward as defense

(01:09:26):
wins championships and were built on defense, and this trade
cements us for that. So he was also asked did
he not believe that the core of this team that
got to the finals last year with Luca as the centerpiece,
could contend for a title, And he just doubled down
and said, I'll.

Speaker 2 (01:09:44):
Say this again, defense wins championships.

Speaker 1 (01:09:48):
Well, they had the number one ranked defense for the
last twenty games of last season, and the problem that
Tim McMahon pointed out when the Celtics beat the Mavericks
in five games in the finals, defense was not the issue.
They allowed one hundred and nine points per one hundred
possessions in the finals. That's a defensive rating that would
have ranked second in the league last regular season. They

(01:10:09):
couldn't score enough enough, so and he also said, we
believe in the move we made. Asked about the logic
of a time frame that ends with the team entering
a stretch when it doesn't control its first round draft picks.
Is that in the team's best interest? He said, you
obviously don't. That's fine. You're entitled to your opinions. But
we're excited. I think once we win, that will change
your mind. And then they asked him, do you see

(01:10:33):
yourself continuing as the Mavericks general manager beyond the timeframe
of three to four years? He said, I have three
years left on my contract. I see myself finishing it out.

Speaker 3 (01:10:45):
So it makes a lot to dissect from that, Craig,
the whole win now thing for the Mavericks. Yeah, Kyrie
Irving's out for next season, Craig, after suffering was it
the achilles? Yep, tearing his achilles. He's done for now season,
and I would think the Mavericks window for next season
is also done. Now you're looking at Kyrie Irving, who's

(01:11:06):
going to be on the wrong side of thirty coming
off a major, major injury. You have Anthony Davis, who's
also on the wrong side of thirty, who's had his
own health concerns. I mean, shoot, his first game of
the Mavericks uniform, he only played one half of basketball
because he got hurt, and then.

Speaker 2 (01:11:22):
He was out for two or three weeks.

Speaker 3 (01:11:23):
So the whole defense wins championships. You know we're trying
to win now. I just absolutely just do not buy
it at all. And if you really wanted to win,
I mean, the whole point of winning a championship, you
want to have a top five player in the league,
and they had that with Luka Dantis. You already talked

(01:11:44):
with the stat about them having the best defense. Yeah,
down the stretch. I mean again again, before the trade, Craig,
I thought this team could be healthy. I would think
they would probably be the biggest threat in the Western
Conference right now if you go back and if you now,
of course it's hypothetical. You know, maybe Kyrie ends up,
you know, tearing his achilles anyways, but you know, if

(01:12:04):
you have look on the Mavericks, obviously Lakers may not
even be a playoff team, the Rockets, you know, Nuggets, Clippers.
I would think the Mavericks are once again, you know,
the biggest threat to the Thunder, and remember they beat
the Thunder last season. So yep, there's nothing that Nikov
said here that would make me, as a Mavericks fan
feel better.

Speaker 1 (01:12:22):
Yeah. Yeah, I just think I just see him doubling
down on everything and that's not gonna sit well with
Mavericks fans. All right, up next, we'll talk college baseball.
Ty Harrington in the house. He'll join us next here
as we continue from UFCU Dish fark Field.

Speaker 2 (01:12:36):
I'm thirteen under the zone because it's time for.

Speaker 1 (01:12:38):
Our weekly second on college baseball with Hy Harrington, of course,
the lifetime Longhorn, former long worn player and assistant coach
in twenty years they head coach at Texas State. Which
George strait tune is that one?

Speaker 4 (01:12:49):
I don't know, but I always let that part. I
don't know the name.

Speaker 6 (01:12:51):
You always quiz me on the names of the songs
and a big dam but I don't know the names
of all the songs. I would tell you. I love
the way he says.

Speaker 1 (01:12:59):
Unlearned, you have to learn and learn, And I'm like, yeah,
you know who else says you learn Yoda in the
Star Wars song. You must have learned that which you
have learned?

Speaker 4 (01:13:10):
Yeah, you have to learn.

Speaker 2 (01:13:11):
You have to learn and.

Speaker 4 (01:13:12):
Learn about fifty top or number one hits.

Speaker 1 (01:13:15):
That's right, So learn us cam which number one was
this one?

Speaker 2 (01:13:19):
A fire? You can't put out fire?

Speaker 4 (01:13:21):
Can't? Yeah? You know what, I'd be better.

Speaker 6 (01:13:23):
I would have a better chance if you play the
music and let me sing along with him.

Speaker 4 (01:13:27):
Next time, you.

Speaker 6 (01:13:28):
Can do I can do that, okay, but I couldn't
name I probably still couldn't tell you the name of
the song, but I could sing.

Speaker 1 (01:13:33):
Along with Okay. All right, So next Tuesday when we're here, before.

Speaker 4 (01:13:40):
There, we're in San Marcus.

Speaker 1 (01:13:42):
Oh, that's right.

Speaker 2 (01:13:43):
What we can do it in San Marcus?

Speaker 4 (01:13:45):
Fitting, Yeah, bitch s George straight.

Speaker 1 (01:13:47):
Right, So we'll be down in lovely Hayes County at
Bob Capball Park.

Speaker 2 (01:13:51):
By the way, are we going to get to be
in a booth?

Speaker 4 (01:13:53):
You think so?

Speaker 1 (01:13:54):
Yeah, because I know earlier the season was down there
and they were inside of that they didn't.

Speaker 2 (01:13:58):
Have to be outside in the window. And also that's
all right.

Speaker 1 (01:14:01):
So next Tuesday, when we're a Bob Cat ballpark. And
you know, after I go down, what's what's the great
place text Max Town by the River.

Speaker 2 (01:14:11):
Let's say the Herbert Herbert's.

Speaker 4 (01:14:14):
Yeah, indeed, that was George's spot too, was it real?

Speaker 2 (01:14:18):
Indeed?

Speaker 6 (01:14:18):
Oh yeah, oh no, the original the guy that owned it,
who's long passed away. But George would come in there
and he had his own table and ate there.

Speaker 4 (01:14:28):
And when you go in there, you'll see a handful
of photos of him.

Speaker 1 (01:14:31):
It was the great Jeff Howe who told me about
Herbert's initially. So then I went and when my daughter
was Strutter senior captain there, I took her there from
once we went there one day.

Speaker 2 (01:14:41):
She had never been, you know, college students.

Speaker 4 (01:14:43):
What did they do right?

Speaker 1 (01:14:44):
But she went and she really enjoys it. So anyway,
next Tuesday we'll go down there. I will have Cam
bump back in the four o'clock hour when we do
our segment, and I will and he'll it'll be a
George Strait song and Cam, don't don't pick you know
I'm gonna love you forever and ever. Amen, don't don't

(01:15:06):
pick one of the most popular one. Pick a number one.
It can be a number one one. Since he is
the catalog. That's all we ever bumped off with anyway,
Just make it a little more obscure camp so that
we can get tied to sing along with it and
play name that shit. Okay, all right, we'll do that
next Tuesday.

Speaker 4 (01:15:23):
Oh my god. All right.

Speaker 1 (01:15:24):
Meantime, he can name the number one baseball team in
the country right now. And it's kind of a it's
kind of a weird dynamic because yes, by process of elimination,
I mean Georgia's been number one, Tennis he's been number one,
Arkansas has been number one, LSU's been number one. Texas
becomes the fifth SEC team to be number one in

(01:15:45):
the country. And so it depends on which side of
the fence you're looking at. There's some on social media
and say, wow, the SEC isn't all that look at this,
or just beating up on one of the other side
is now, that's why they're that good and they're knocking
one another off. And at this point, because are cresting
the halfway point of conference play now at thirteen and two,

(01:16:06):
and folks can say what they want about, well, their
their most difficult series have been at home, and that'll
include Auburn. This week, and then they have A and
M and they still have to go to Fayetteville though
to play Arkansas. But they've beaten LSU at home, and
they beat Georgia at home. Still, it comes down to
winning series, and they haven't dropped a series, to see,
And that's how you win a conference champions one.

Speaker 4 (01:16:25):
Hundred percent, that's how you do it.

Speaker 6 (01:16:26):
But I would ask you, because you watch more sports
than anybody I know, and you are glued in and
informed by sports, is there a more fluid top twenty
in any than any other supports in college baseball that
changes more than baseball, don't No?

Speaker 2 (01:16:44):
Right?

Speaker 4 (01:16:44):
That's fair? Right?

Speaker 1 (01:16:45):
And and football had some fluidity, and basketball had some fluiditis,
but not like this, right, not like that. Not only
the teams that are number one, but the ones below them.
You can go from being unranked to tenth in two poles, yep.
You can go from being fourth out of the poland
two weeks.

Speaker 2 (01:17:04):
It's been. It's been.

Speaker 1 (01:17:06):
Florida was the top ten team when the season started,
and they needed the Sweet Missouri last week just to
get the four and eleven in conference play. That's life
in the SEC. Somebody asked me today about you know
how different life was in this SEC. And I said,
it's a grind and it's really high intensity no matter

(01:17:26):
where you're playing and who you're playing. I'm telling you,
I'm here to tell you Kentucky is six and nine
in the league. But tough to play that ball club
in that ballpark in those conditions, especially on Friday, and
everybody's got their own set of irascible fans and all
that kind of stuff that they can make it make
it very very difficult on you. And I said that.

(01:17:50):
They said, well, what's the difference between that and the
Big Twelve? And I said, I'll tell you the difference.
There were weekends. And this is kind of a corollary
to what I heard Sark talk about football, that you
could play at a Big twelve stadium with a football
team and catch a team on the down week or
not that good or whether and you might not even
be playing your best, but you can still get out

(01:18:12):
of there with with win. And you really can't do
that in the SEC. Texas did not play poorly against Vanderbilt,
but Vanderbilt played really well and Texas really had to
make some plays there in the fourth quarter to hold
on and win that game.

Speaker 2 (01:18:26):
That's life in this league. And so I said, so the.

Speaker 1 (01:18:28):
Difference is to me, the intensity and the enmity that
comes from opposing fan bases.

Speaker 2 (01:18:36):
That's where it's different.

Speaker 1 (01:18:38):
And I said, you know, they like to say it
just means more, and I said, it just means more
to hate your neighbor, because in this league it isn't
just about your our trial. Everybody hates everybody in this league.
That's what I'm discovering when I'm going Everybody hates everybody
in this league.

Speaker 2 (01:18:55):
And I've seen it.

Speaker 1 (01:18:56):
I really saw it in basketball, and I also saw
it the few road environs football as well.

Speaker 6 (01:19:00):
I think two in line with what you're saying, and
I think this goes.

Speaker 4 (01:19:04):
With it when you when you open.

Speaker 6 (01:19:07):
Up the schedule, right, let's let me back, let me
that's a better way to put it. When we get
to Thursday of this week, even if it's Thursday of
the first week in the SEC for the very first time,
Texas fans, and if you're an OU fan, since we're
the newest members, when you open up on Thursday, the
pay or the paper or there or I said, the

(01:19:28):
paper did not and you're listening to a radio show
or you pull up your computer and you look at
who's playing who, and you start to go, oh, wow,
so and so is playing so and so this weekend,
or Arkansas's playned A and M this weekend, and or
Texas is playing Auburn this weekend, Mississippi State planning, and
then all of a sudden, week two or week eight,
you open it back up again. You go, oh my god,

(01:19:50):
look at who's playing. We've got a top five and
you know, number five, and number two, we got number
one and number you know nine, we got what And
you start looking at that and you go, it's every weekend.

Speaker 2 (01:20:01):
You just hit on it.

Speaker 1 (01:20:02):
And I talked about this the last two weekends. I'm
gonna hit it again this weekend. Starting Thursday, Ole misses
at South Carolina and South Carolina struggling, then third ranked
Georgia at seventeenth rank Vanderbilt fifteenth ranked Alabama at number seven,
LSU six ranked Auburn. They're number eight and D one
and number six another six ranked Auburn at number one,

(01:20:24):
Texas A and M hottest team perhaps in the league
at number two, Arkansas and Oklahoma resurgent now number twelve
playing at Missouri, and then on Friday. The series to
two that are Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Kentucky at number two
Tennessee and then there's Florida at Mississippi State every week
every week.

Speaker 2 (01:20:44):
That you're gonna have this.

Speaker 1 (01:20:45):
So so that is something I think that teams need
to adjust to.

Speaker 2 (01:20:50):
This team is adjusted to all of that part of it.

Speaker 1 (01:20:53):
Well, the problem they have is keeping guys healthy right
now because Blue is out, he's banged up. They got
a couple of pitchers that that still are not ready
yet to do that. Adrian Rodriguez just coming back from
that edema there near the hamdmatee bone. Fortunately didn't break
the handmakee bone fracture that, and he's taking ground balls

(01:21:15):
and he's out there and I'm looking at him take
ground balls at second base because we don't know about
Ethan Mendoza tonight because he banged up his shoulder diving
for a ball and they got to slow play that
and wait and see. So overcoming the injuries I think
is going to be the biggest test for this team,
in addition to playing some really good teams.

Speaker 6 (01:21:34):
Yeah, and you know, and the crazy thing about injuries,
it's something you cannot control, not why I say you can't.
There's sometimes you can maybe you know, control pieces of it,
but not all the time. And in sport, baseball is
a much more physical sports than what people give it
credit for. It just because we're not banging heads and
running into each other.

Speaker 2 (01:21:49):
It takes it start, that's right.

Speaker 6 (01:21:51):
And next time you get by the way, next time
somebody throws an object at you at ninety five miles an.

Speaker 4 (01:21:55):
Hour, that's hard and it hits you.

Speaker 6 (01:21:56):
You know, you can understand why, Oh my god, I
get why guys get hurt at once in a while
and their effort. Look, you know, whether you know Mendoza
gets to play tonight or you know, whenever it may
be that he comes back into it. One of the
hardest things about not only you know, momentarily having a
replacing people like he in blue and together. There's an
emotional piece to this that I thought, and I think

(01:22:18):
women does. He Every at bat for him is its
new life for him. I mean, he takes it so
personal and he I mean, and I've had hitters, and
we've all had players. I was guilty of this too.
We would throw at bats away every once in a while, right,
and then I'll just have them terrible at bad and
you don't even have a you don't go through your
plan in your mind, you don't focus and mean, it's

(01:22:39):
like he's in there and it's like he's studying. No,
it's like he's studying fornt of final. Yeah, and I'm
almost every at bat, and it's you can see it
in his body and his mindset and how he approaches things.
And I think there's you know, part of the success
of these guys is if you watch them the there's
a great clip from the Kentucky's I think it was

(01:23:01):
a final out of an inning or something like and
Galvan is just going nuts behind home play, you know,
and and of course your excitement adds so much to
it too, but there and you could see this emotion
coming out of again, coming off the heels of a
big weekend before and we get, you know, all those
things that go with this sec we're describing. And they've
been able to forward their mentality each week to the

(01:23:23):
next game, to the next moment, and not to me
has been as impressive because here's my detailed research about
why I think that's true, not just that you know,
you're seeing the high five and in the emotion going on.
Texas to me right now is the most opportunistic team.
We talked about this a week If you make a mistake,

(01:23:44):
if you make an error, or you hit a guy
with two outs, or you do you know, one of those,
and then the game creates opportunities in itself the way
the games play. Then you as a team creates some
opportunities by you know, your detailed of attention to detailed
different things. But when the other team makes a mistake,
they have pounced on it. So why does that mean
to me? That tells you that they're forwarding their their

(01:24:06):
mindset each inning, each at bat, each game, all that
is going and they're they're not just taking a day off.
They're not taking a moment all in my mind, that's
what that signifies.

Speaker 1 (01:24:16):
Yeah, another another the flip side of that, and long
Warrens benefited from some of this over the past weekend.

Speaker 2 (01:24:26):
The the opponent.

Speaker 1 (01:24:27):
Quite often does not take advantage of the opportunities that's handing.
Kentucky stranded a lot of runners during the week and
Aggie used to say, and I love this phrase. There
were so many that that that he had like the game,
She's a cruel mistress. And some of the other things
like that, and that the world was a very different
place for winners and losers. But one of his phrases

(01:24:49):
that I that I treasured is because it goes into
a metaphysical thing, which all he could do.

Speaker 2 (01:24:55):
But his phrase was the game knows when it's not
being respected.

Speaker 1 (01:25:02):
Indeed, so if you're stranding runners over and over is
if the game is a living entity itself, it will
punish you for not respecting it by taking advantage of
the opportunities that are presented per one.

Speaker 6 (01:25:17):
Hundred percent, And if you're not emotionally dialed into the
physical piece of it, which emotions lead the physical side
of it, if you're not dialed into that and you're
not respectful of those moments and what that means, and
you're not fortifact playing your very best or doing your
very best, which you better do in this league, right,
because if you if you just take a minute off
or a second off, it'll get you. Yeah, and again,

(01:25:40):
I think this team has been so opportunistic and that
creates a lot of different conversations about what that looks
like in your one hundred percent, right, and you're in
what you're you know, saying what all you would talk
about in those different things, but they just I've been
so impressed with.

Speaker 4 (01:25:56):
Each each pitch.

Speaker 6 (01:25:58):
Each moment they play this game, you know, to the
standard that you hear them say it all.

Speaker 1 (01:26:03):
The time, played with the standard up of the scoreboard.

Speaker 6 (01:26:05):
That's right, right, And it's such an unbelievable And even
I heard Jim say it today.

Speaker 4 (01:26:09):
It's a coachy thing.

Speaker 6 (01:26:11):
But the players are all saying it, you better, but
they they're doing it.

Speaker 1 (01:26:15):
Yeah, this comparison won't match up in every element because
they were different kinds of players, but I'm talking about
in terms of the intensity that they brought to the
game and how they didn't give away at bats as
you brought up Mendoza.

Speaker 2 (01:26:30):
You remember a decade ago Mark Payton. Yeah, oh god, how.

Speaker 1 (01:26:35):
You know when a gam where he was and that
they didn't The reason this kingdom mind also is when
Texas played the fifteen inning game on Saturday. It was
their longest game they played in ten years. And it
was April twenty fifteen, and it was in Stillwater. And
I told this story because it was on Friday night.
It was Friday a series opening. It was a day
that Shaka Smart was introduced as a new basketball coach.

(01:26:56):
Why had the bee here for the press conference? And
our friend David Garrett was up in Oklahoma and he
was gonna work with me that weekend. He said, I'll
call the Friday game until you get there. Whatever it
was an afternoon news conference or whatever. Well, the news
conference started late, all this stuff, and we got through
it and did it, and then I raced to the
airport and I get to DFW, and then the connection
was delayed.

Speaker 2 (01:27:15):
And then by the time I get.

Speaker 1 (01:27:16):
Into the car at will Rogers Airport and I flip
in a dial up number we had to the station.
The game's in the bottom of the ninth and I thought, okay, well,
I'm not going to be there.

Speaker 2 (01:27:25):
It's tied, but it's in the bottom line. I won't
be there in time.

Speaker 1 (01:27:28):
I drive the hour in fifteen minutes of still water,
get the still water, and when I get there, they're
going into the bottom of the thirteenth and David has
called the.

Speaker 2 (01:27:38):
Entire game by himself.

Speaker 1 (01:27:40):
So I park, I go upstairs, I get up to
the booth, and the bottom of the thirteenth inning they're
going to the fourteenth.

Speaker 2 (01:27:47):
Texas to Oklahoma State.

Speaker 1 (01:27:49):
Two long worn baseball continue to know, he takes off
the heads and because it's all yours, big boy, So I.

Speaker 2 (01:27:53):
Did the final five innings of that game.

Speaker 1 (01:27:55):
It went eighteen innings and Oklahoma State ended up winning.
But there was a fifth teen inning game there two
years prior, when Mark Payton stole home with a head
first slide in a one to nothing fifteen inning balgain.
That kind of approach, that kind of attitude, that's the
kind of stuff we see from Mendoza.

Speaker 6 (01:28:14):
Yeah, he's a tough minded, really intuitive, never takes his
eye off the baseball.

Speaker 4 (01:28:21):
Well that everybody goes, well, you're not.

Speaker 6 (01:28:22):
You can't say, well, yeah, people do take their eye
off the baseball. They put their eyes down, they look around,
they get drifted, they lose their focus. Wherever that baseball is,
that young man's eyes are peeled on it. And that's
why he's such an intuitive player, tough minded.

Speaker 4 (01:28:35):
And I got to be honest with you too. You know,
if you go back.

Speaker 6 (01:28:37):
To the beginning of the year, they were hitting him
in the nine spoive yep, and he kept getting hits,
kept hitting hits, kept moving him up, kept moving him up,
and then all of a sudden you could watch the
offense really start to flourish when he got to the
top of the order because he was on base all
the time. His own base percenters was like five something
at one point time, and I was just like.

Speaker 4 (01:28:55):
This guy's on base three times a game.

Speaker 6 (01:28:58):
Yeah, but that's you know, and and when you're at
the top of that order and you had the older
hitters coming in, you know, behind him, and that's an
offensive weapon that's hard to describe and hard to defend.

Speaker 1 (01:29:09):
The other guy's moved up to the orders, Galvian, Yeah,
who's now up to number two is the highest he's
ever batten. And I want to ask you something about him.
We need a break, and then I've got a couple
other things to ask you about. Ty Harrington with us
and we'll continue from UFCU.

Speaker 2 (01:29:20):
Just falk Field.

Speaker 1 (01:29:21):
I'm thirteen under the zone talking college baseball here with
Ty Harry Could. We've talked a lot about this long
warn baseball team. But this is something I mentioned earlier
and I asked Schlass about this. As a coach, did
you enjoy it when you would have a matchup with
your team against another team? And he had siblings going

(01:29:41):
up against one another, and in this case, you've got
twin brothers. Rene Galvan is the starting left fielder for
UTRGV Ryland of course starts behind the plate for Texas. Additionally,
you have to Quate Stewart, who played with those two
guys in Sentton and also why Track the pitcher. They
were all part of Eight Realities is twenty twenty two four,

(01:30:03):
a state championship team that won it right here on
this field that UFCU just far field. And so I said, yeah,
final longer we win the game. You know that kind
of thing. And I know that's a coach thing, and
he laughed about it afterwards. But it's a nice wrinkle and.

Speaker 4 (01:30:15):
It is fun.

Speaker 6 (01:30:15):
I'll tell you, I never really put a whole lot.
It only happened to me maybe four times. I was
trying to think when you brought that up, how many
times I think it happened to.

Speaker 4 (01:30:23):
Me four times?

Speaker 6 (01:30:24):
And ironically two of them are of a team Tyxas
State and UTA and Tyler Sibley.

Speaker 4 (01:30:30):
Who played me.

Speaker 6 (01:30:30):
His younger brother played at UTA, and then Sean Garcia
played for ME and also.

Speaker 4 (01:30:36):
Coached for me.

Speaker 6 (01:30:36):
His older brother played on her younger brother played at UTA.
So there were a handful of times and I think
it happened to me one time at junior college.

Speaker 4 (01:30:43):
But once you keep going about, it's like anything else.

Speaker 6 (01:30:47):
Once the first pitch is thrown, all that goes away, right,
and then's who's gonna win, How do we gonna win?
What do we gotta do to win? And that becomes
your mindset. But I think it'd be more confusing for
the parents.

Speaker 1 (01:30:59):
Well quite Frankly, Ryland told me because I'd heard the
rumor of this, so I said, fact or fiction. I'm
told you had or between you and your brother, you
had to come up with something between forty and fifty
tickets just for family and close friends. He says that
is fact. Yeah, he said, I came up with thirty,
and then and then Renee came up with about fifteen

(01:31:21):
or so, somewhere between forty and fifty friends and family
and all that sort of stuff.

Speaker 2 (01:31:25):
We're going to be here for that game.

Speaker 6 (01:31:26):
You know, think about this too, because you know how
good Adrian Allies was here, right, and then I coached
his brother for a year or two at Texas State,
my second Southwest Texas in but point being sent in
Texas not the biggest town, right, then there's a lot
of other five A and six A high schools that

(01:31:46):
you know that are big name that have not produced
as many baseball players as that small town has, and
how important baseball is in.

Speaker 1 (01:31:54):
That town, and what he has done to elevate it,
what Adrian has done. In fact, I even asked, silly question,
I should know better this know one that covering high
school sports?

Speaker 2 (01:32:02):
Way I do?

Speaker 1 (01:32:02):
But I asked, uh, I asked h rylan. I said,
is uh coach allIt? He's gonna be here because now
they got a game nights Tuesday night. Tuesday nights a
game night you gotta play. So they've got it. They've
got a ball game to night. But it was Adrian
who tweeted out the fact that we're going to be
four sentting pirates on this field.

Speaker 2 (01:32:20):
Uh, or at least in this game.

Speaker 1 (01:32:22):
We'll see about why I trin could be pitches, but
but uh, there will be four sitting pirates uh from
that twenty twenty two state championship team on this deal?

Speaker 2 (01:32:30):
All right?

Speaker 4 (01:32:32):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (01:32:32):
Texas State had a had a monstrous UH opponent to
deal with last weekend. UH Southern Miss ended up winning
one out of the three ball games out of there.

Speaker 4 (01:32:42):
What what?

Speaker 1 (01:32:42):
What was your takeaway having seen that whole thing against
that good Southern Miss ball lay?

Speaker 4 (01:32:46):
Yeah?

Speaker 6 (01:32:46):
You well, the last thing you said is important. Good
Southern Miss team. They are good.

Speaker 2 (01:32:52):
And they transitioned nicely after coach Berry.

Speaker 4 (01:32:55):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (01:32:55):
Yeah, it's got such the most unbelievable guys we'll ever
meet in your lifetime.

Speaker 4 (01:32:58):
I texted him for the game on Thursday and said,
are you coming?

Speaker 6 (01:33:01):
He goes, no, shot, I'm at Lake such and such
and Georgia somewhere right now fishing. No, but I'll be listening,
watching watch it. Yeah, maybe watching and listening and and
but so it's it is a really good Southern Miss team.
They have probably really four hitters in their lineup that
that are very dangerous hitters. And any one time you

(01:33:22):
can see why they are a top They have been
a top twenty five team and a top twenty team. Actually,
you can see that Texas State. The first game finding
out was a good game. Saturday got got away from them.
Sunday they're down, They're chasing four going into the eighth.

Speaker 4 (01:33:36):
Southern Miss has to.

Speaker 6 (01:33:37):
Go to their bullpen to get to their closer and
the seventh, and because of that, I think maybe extending
him a little bit, then they were able to come up.
Galloway came up with a huge, huge, two out base
hit up the middle of runners on second third to
tie the game. His first weekend back since opening weekend
when he got broke his handmate bone and so had

(01:33:58):
huge at bet and then came up did something one
of his legs on a rounding first, So don't know
how long he's out, but a huge hit for them.
Samson Q came up with a homer the inning before,
and then they got a walk off hit Bathroom with
the bases loaded to win the game. Look when you're
chasing four against the top twenty five team and you're
in a desperate need of a win, you know, sometimes

(01:34:19):
it looked bleak, and they were able to hang in
there and come up with a win and a needed
win for them.

Speaker 1 (01:34:24):
There are three teams in the Sun Belt who were
ranked in the top in the top twenty five. Three
teams Coastal who were used to seeing Coastal Caroline every
year and their transition without coach Gilmore and retired Troy
and then and then Southern miss A. Which of the
three do you think is the best? And b is

(01:34:45):
this you can go in reverse order. Is this the
toughest conference season that you can remember Texas State having.

Speaker 2 (01:34:54):
To deal with?

Speaker 4 (01:34:57):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (01:34:58):
No, because you had some there were light years in
the Southland and then and then even in the Sunbelt.

Speaker 6 (01:35:03):
Yeah, it might be like I so, all right, let
me answer the first question. Okay, all so, Troy is
is really good. I saw him early. I haven't done.
I haven't seen him physically, but other than on TV,
he's got a little He's got.

Speaker 4 (01:35:16):
A few more arms than what he had.

Speaker 6 (01:35:17):
He had a really offensive team last year and the
year before, right, I mean really offensive, but they didn't
have enough arms to get through there.

Speaker 4 (01:35:24):
They've got more arms now.

Speaker 6 (01:35:26):
Coastal might be one of the best pitching teams in
the in around. I mean when you go in there
and you start digging in there. Their numbers are really
really impressive, but they don't hit as much as what
all of Gary's team. Gary Hillmore's teams were so offensive. Yeah,
and I mean big physical monsters that you stood in
the box. They don't have the offense that they've had,

(01:35:46):
but they do pitch and they do play really good defense.

Speaker 4 (01:35:49):
Uh And Southern Misses, Like I said, they.

Speaker 6 (01:35:51):
Are a top twenty five team. All three of those
teams are the top twenty five teams. But you know,
so when you ask you that question is the toughest one.

Speaker 4 (01:35:59):
So the some o.

Speaker 6 (01:36:00):
It's had four teams in the last three years, so
you know, the team that's not playing up to what
it normally does Lavia Ye and Louisiana, and of course
Matt always always gets his teams going. At the end
of the year, they play at a different level than
what they played all year long.

Speaker 4 (01:36:17):
And then I looked in there and I actually visit
with a few people.

Speaker 6 (01:36:20):
They had two of their better guys go down to
So again it's this injury thing that that keeps, you know,
ramping up all over. You have to be able to
survive that somehow, some way. But the sumb Belt is
good again.

Speaker 4 (01:36:34):
You know, let's talk about tonight real quick.

Speaker 6 (01:36:36):
It's you said you brought up the Southland, so you
know U t RGV and Derrek Matlocke and then.

Speaker 2 (01:36:41):
They fill the transition back in the South.

Speaker 6 (01:36:45):
Yeah, it's a great It's one of the best sayings. Look,
I'm the old fan of the South of Night because
I was in it for for so long and and
and loved their leadership. They had a great time, but
they're that team that's at that you know that r
p I position that if they you know, they pick
off on in different places and take care of their
conference business. You're looking at a team that it would
be trying to you know, chase that large bit. Yeah,

(01:37:07):
that's gonna make tonight interesting because now I will say this,
you know this a lot of team because I've done it.

Speaker 4 (01:37:12):
I'm not what I'm about to tell you I've done.

Speaker 6 (01:37:14):
So you go in on a Tuesday and you got
a chance to knock off a top you know five team,
a top ten team. Then your Friday starter would be
your guy and that's his bullpen night. So you hold
him out and you tell him before the game, no
bullpen until the seventh inning. And if we got a
chance to win the game, then you decide whether you're
getting a bullpen or you're going in the game to

(01:37:34):
get your your work on the mound with a chance to.

Speaker 1 (01:37:36):
Save a GAMESA in Texas State bot one.

Speaker 4 (01:37:38):
Hundred percent, right, So we've all done it. Now.

Speaker 6 (01:37:40):
The difference for tonight that Derek would have match like
would have have to make the decision about is short
week round quick turnaround.

Speaker 4 (01:37:48):
Right now, it's not just that it's it's a sixth day.

Speaker 6 (01:37:50):
They're usually on a seven day you know rotation, right
because of set Friday to Friday, Saturday, Saturday. With the starters,
this would be a Friday to Thursday, and then it's
then you gets tough and because then it's the next week,
it's a short arrest to and so it just so
there's a decision that would have to be made as
to whether they would run him out there if they
had a chance to beat Texas, you know, and at

(01:38:12):
the end of the game or close the game out.
So be interesting to see number one, if it comes
up at number two, if it does what they do.

Speaker 1 (01:38:16):
It well, if they beat the number three RPI team
of the country, they're number one polls, but they're number
three in the RPI, that's a huge.

Speaker 6 (01:38:23):
Huge scoop of points to your resume. And so I
got one last question for you. I'm curious. This came
up in a conversation Sunday night after the Texas State game.
I'll stop and had dinner with some friends of mine
and I was I had this question. I'm sure there's
a simple answer. If you if you play what is
it talking about the polls?

Speaker 4 (01:38:42):
Right? How fluid it is.

Speaker 6 (01:38:43):
If I play a team in March and they're number
five in the country and I beat them.

Speaker 4 (01:38:48):
By April, they're out of the pole.

Speaker 6 (01:38:52):
So and then we get into May and they're you know,
fluid up and down. You know, So what does it
really count as because you'll hit people advertise that they
had ten top ten wins or whatever.

Speaker 4 (01:39:06):
That looks like, So, I mean, what is it? What
is it?

Speaker 1 (01:39:10):
You know what you just described? You described the long
worn football season last ball. Remember when they were beating
ranked teams that fell out of the poll and people
are like, well, you haven't beating anybody.

Speaker 2 (01:39:19):
You don't have a win of a ranked no.

Speaker 3 (01:39:20):
No.

Speaker 2 (01:39:20):
At the time they were number yeah, but they aren't now.

Speaker 1 (01:39:22):
It depends on it depends, I think, on how that
team is playing at the moment.

Speaker 2 (01:39:29):
You have to get some credit for that.

Speaker 1 (01:39:32):
But I will say this, the earlier in that season
that you get that win, there's a sliding scale as
to how much it's really going to count as opposed
to later in the season. A win here for UTRGV
would be big because we're mid April.

Speaker 4 (01:39:47):
One percent.

Speaker 6 (01:39:48):
There's a lot of data, a lot of data in
your background now right.

Speaker 2 (01:39:51):
There's a big difference.

Speaker 1 (01:39:52):
Between winning on April fifteenth and February fifteen. There's just
just a difference. Hey, have funnelment all casting. All right,
it's Ty Harrington with this. We'll be back to wrap
up today's program here on thirteen under the Zone.
