Speaker 1 (00:00):
With the crescendo of what's to come this week, the
start of the college football season, it still feels like
a build up and that is just fine with me.
Good afternoon, everybody, Welcome to the program here on Sports
Radio AM thirteen under the Zone. My name is Craig Waite,
so glad to have you with us. We take you
each and every weekday afternoon, Monday through Friday, two pm
(00:20):
to five am, and glad to have the support crew along,
of course.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
Cameron D. Parker.
Speaker 1 (00:27):
The D on the birth certificate stands for Dallas as
in his favorite pro football team that he sometimes comes
to terms with and is unhappy with. Mcam, were you
pleased with Brian Schottenheimer's comments yesterday? Shot He's saying, you know,
his conversation with Michael Parsons about him laying out on
(00:49):
the table there and just kind of staring up at
the ceiling of Jerry World during the Cowboys final preseason
game US.
Speaker 2 (00:57):
He said, that's something we had a long conversation. Mat.
I won't keep it inside here.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
Yeah, I mean, obviously as a head coach, you you
hope he would say something to Michael Parsons, and he's
just kind of hanging around there. And obviously it's a
preseason game. So if Micah was signed, I don't think
it would have been a story. I think it just
would have been look at Michael Parsons. Look, how you know,
unmeaningful these preseason games are he's taking an et, but
(01:24):
because he's unsigned, it's more of a bad look on him.
But this whole offseason just the latest black mark on
the Cowboys front office and how they handle these negotiations
and and what's happening. So but you know, Seanheimer is convinced,
Dak Prescott is convinced that Michael Parsons will be suiting
(01:45):
up in what almost eight days when the Cowboys open
their season up against the defending world champions, the Philadelphia Eagles,
in a game that I do not think will be
close whatsoever. But you know, Micah, he may think the
open part of practice and apparently you know, he's getting
a second look at a back injury.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
That's a little scary.
Speaker 3 (02:08):
Now, maybe that's coming from his team and saying like, oh,
he's injured all this stuff, But at the same time,
if you're about to lock up your all pro defensive lineman,
linebacker and he's got a little bit of a back
issue before the season starts. The whole thing. Craig just
just not making me feel good at all about the
(02:28):
Cowboys going into Week one. I thought it was kind
of weird too.
Speaker 1 (02:31):
I think you just brought it up that Michael Parsons
was complaining about his back and here's a guy trying
to get a new contract with a year to go
on the agreement. The Cowboys for their part, so they
they've looked at him, they've done MRIs, they've done and stuff.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
They don't see anything. So I thought that.
Speaker 1 (02:51):
Was a little bit odd, a little bit, a little
bit strange there. So that's that's one thing. Of course,
reveling in the cowboy's misfortune. Is our man on the board,
That would be Jay Herman, who is lifelong. First it
was Washington Redskins, then it was Washington Football team, then
it's currently Washington Commanders. But did it used to give
(03:12):
you great pleasure to see the Cowboys struggle and stumble
the way they have over the past three decades in
various forms.
Speaker 4 (03:20):
What's the old saying, misery loves company, and redskin fans
now Commander fans have never really been in a position
to brag over my lifetime, at least the past twenty
five years or so aka the Dan Snyder era, So
misery loved company at times, seeing the Cowboys get the
(03:40):
football polled away Charlie Brown style, but especially Craig in
the last twenty four hours when the Commanders got their
star wide receiver with Terry McLaurin to end his hold
in and now seeing these headlines come out of Dallas.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
Yeah, any other Commanders even had fans, Craig.
Speaker 1 (03:58):
Hey, hey, they you know they've had this what is
the active string of sellouts still intact for Washington? I
know they quite often did not play in front of
full houses. They're what used to be called Fedexfit what's
it called now at Northwest.
Speaker 5 (04:14):
Something Northwest Stadium.
Speaker 1 (04:16):
Northwest Stadium because Washington, as we know, is in the
northwestern part of the United States anyway. But they had
this long string I think going back to nineteen sixty
six of consecutive sellouts at old RFK Stadium. Back then
it was actually DC Stadium until RFK was assassinated. Then
it became RFK Stadium, which they're finally what they're tearing down.
(04:37):
That's where they're going to build a new stadium for
the Commanders, isn't it on the old grounds of where
RFK Stadium once stood.
Speaker 4 (04:46):
Yeah, and it comes with a whole project for the
surrounding area as well. There's going to be a real
transformation down there in the area where RFK Stadium used
to be. And there was a big political battle to
get that pushed through, which the Harris ownership group recently
to have won.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
Okay, all right, My most vivid memories of RFK Stadium
because I've only been there three or four times, and
every time it was to call play by play of
Major League Soccer when I was doing Dallas back then
they were the Dallas Burn their FC Dallas now And
where they put us for the broadcast was actually outside
(05:23):
in the upper deck, not far up.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
In the upper decks.
Speaker 1 (05:26):
We had a good vantage point of it, but it
was in It was in kind of a crow's nest
type thing, or I should say a pigeon's nest, because
there was pigeon poop everywhere. You had to dodge it
and make sure you didn't get hit by flying droppings
while calling a soccer match. But anyway, so yeah, Cowboys
and Commanders continue going through their but you have to
(05:46):
be excited. I mean, they reach the NFC Championship Game
for the first time since what nineteen ninety one, I
think it was.
Speaker 4 (05:52):
It was the season beyond I think what any of
the fans expected. By the way, Craig, that sellout streak
did end back in Week two of two thousand eight eighteen.
It was a fifty year sellout streak.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
Yeah, yeah, I knew they had that long stay.
Speaker 1 (06:05):
Okay, So that streak ended and they probably now there's
all new excitement with Jayden Daniels and the Commanders reaching
the NFC Championship Round a year ago.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
So there's there's there's some there's some real excitement there.
Speaker 5 (06:17):
Right, There is definitely some smoke.
Speaker 1 (06:20):
And the thing that you two guys can share is
the universal hatred of all things Philadelphia right at Philadelphia Eagles. Right,
Eagles took out the Commanders in the NFC Championship Game.
They seem to annually take out the Cowboys in one
respect or another, that sort of thing, Right, I mean,
where do you stand with the Eagles as opposed to
Cam used to say, didn't you used to say that
(06:40):
the team you hated most out of the division was
the Giants.
Speaker 3 (06:44):
Still live and the reason for that is, well, you know,
Eli Manning and the Giants owned Dallas. You know, the
first ever game at eighte and T Stadium was Eli
Manning and it was Thursday night at football or something
at football. But I do remember Eli Manning took the
Cowboys defense the way shed so again. Now, of course,
you know, with Arch, I like the Banning Fountain just
(07:04):
a little bit more. But for me growing up, it
was always the Giants, you know, dominating the Cowboys, and
of course the two Super Bowl victories over New England,
you know, Philadelphia. You know, they had some good moments
with McNab and Reid, but for the most part, you know,
they weren't doing anything. The Redskins were struggling. So it
was always the Giants at the top of the Nfcas
for me when I was growing up.
Speaker 2 (07:25):
Correct me if I'm wrong.
Speaker 1 (07:26):
One of those two Giant Super Bowls, in fact, the
first one in seven was kick started by that comeback
that the Giants had to beat the Cowboys in the playoffs,
if I remember correctly, and they went on from there
and then and then ended the eighteen and oh start
of the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl, but
it wasn't. It was like a lofted pass that Manning
(07:47):
had on fourth down.
Speaker 2 (07:48):
It kept the drive alive and then they went on
and won that game.
Speaker 3 (07:51):
When it was patented Eli Manning flutterballs, it's in the
air for way too long. You're like, it's going to
be intercepted, right, and somehow ends up, you know, find
being in the hands of one of his receivers. So
if you're a Patriots fan, that was David Tyree, David
Tyree Odell Beckham junior. Of course, his most famous catch
came against the cowis any game of the Dallas did win,
by the way at Metlive Field, But yeah, just one
(08:13):
of those typical Eli Manning Giants wins.
Speaker 1 (08:15):
And then of course he hit Plexico Burras for the
game winning touchdown against the Patriots.
Speaker 3 (08:19):
There hit Mario Manningham on the sideline and the second
Super Bowl win. Yeah, there's all kinds of great catches
with Eli Manning and New York Giants receiver.
Speaker 2 (08:27):
So there you go.
Speaker 1 (08:29):
So the Giants were the bugaboo for Cam What about
for you? Jake has grown up as a Washington fan,
who was the division opponent that got your goat more
than anybody else.
Speaker 5 (08:39):
I think it was Philadelphia.
Speaker 4 (08:41):
And here's why the Redskins, even if they were favored
over Philadelphia one particular year, have always struggled to win
in Philadelphia. It just seems those are the games that
bring out the worst in Washington football, being in that atmosphere.
And when Jayden Daniels went to Philadelphia played the way
(09:02):
he did this season, not in the NFC championship game,
but in the regular season matchup, that was when I
think we all knew as Washington fans.
Speaker 5 (09:10):
Okay, he has it.
Speaker 1 (09:13):
My wife still thinks they should still be the Washington
football team. She's on She's on board with that. She
likes she likes the name Washington football team. But in
any event, Okay, here's what we have coming up on
the program this afternoon. We're gonna hear from Michael taff
Longhorn's safety coming up here in just a few moments.
We're gonna hear from him. We do have Inconceivable coming up,
(09:35):
which includes the fast food junk food update. But I
also have to get Cameron's thoughts on the announcement that
came down today. The Ryder Cup team has been announced
and there's a lot of folks who are puzzled, some
downright unhappy with one specific selection by the captain, so
(10:00):
we'll get to that. Also, we're going to hear from
Trey Weisner coming up in the three o'clock hour of
the program, and in the four o'clock hour Arch Manning
and Ethan Burke. So there's plenty of long warn conversation
to get to, and there's some other topics that we'll
get to as well. As always, we're happy to have
you join us via the text line. You text the
(10:22):
word Texas follow by your question or comment to eight
one five three zero. So you text the word Texas
follow by your question of comment to eight one five
three zero.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
Standard messaging and data rates may apply. It's really easy.
Speaker 1 (10:35):
You just when you text it to eight one five
three zero, start with the word Texas. That's because of
our geographic location with the with the text line service
we use, So you start with the word Texas follow
by your question or comment to eight one five three zero.
So if you wanted to say, when I was growing
up as a Cowboys fan, I hated both Washington and
(10:57):
New York, you would do you would type the word
Texas and then say when I was a Cowboys fan
growing up, I hated both Washington and New York and
Philadelphia by that way, So nothing like NFC rivalry stuff.
All right, we'll get to all of that and more
coming up this afternoon. Glad to have you with us
(11:17):
here on a yacht rock Wednesday. To remind you of
here on Sports Video AM thirteen under the Zone and
where you always listen to us for absolutely free of charge,
the iHeartRadio appt Glad to have you with us here
on this yacht rock Wednesday, Wednesday afternoon here on thirteen
under the Zone.
Speaker 2 (11:31):
Before we get to.
Speaker 1 (11:32):
The audio there with Michael Tapp. Now that's that's our
conversation with Will Matthews is and note it is that
our man Will Matthews had with Michael.
Speaker 2 (11:45):
Tapp before we get to that.
Speaker 1 (11:48):
Last week on the program, we were lifting some comments
from quotes from the article that Seth Emerson of of
The Athletic wrote about the SEC schedule getting ready to
go to a nine kame conference schedule. He was the
first one out there said it's going to happen, and
(12:08):
then like within an hour the announcement came down that
it was definitely happening, and he does write some really
good things, some salient things for the.
Speaker 2 (12:19):
Athletic He is a piece today.
Speaker 1 (12:22):
Entitled is this College Football's best Week one Ever? He says,
from Columbus to Clemson to Miami, buckle up. So he
talks about how big this weekend is. He talks about
a quote from Daboksweeney at Clemson where he goes, you know,
(12:43):
you wake up, you hit the alarm clock, that sort
of thing, and then he says, then you look up
and you go, oh man, we're playing LSU on national
TV at home.
Speaker 2 (12:52):
It's awesome. It's a lot of juice. Man, You could
just feel it.
Speaker 1 (12:55):
And as Seth Emerson, but he said they probably felt
it also at LSU and at Ohio State and Texas
and Notre Dame Miami, maybe even at South Carolina, Virginia Tech,
Georgia Tech and Colorado all over college football. There's a
lot of juice this week one, which by a few metrics,
(13:18):
might be the biggest week one ever. Here's his case
for it. It features three matchups between teams ranked in
the top ten of the AP preseason poll. Obviously number
one Texas at number three Ohio State. You have number
nine LSU at number four Clemson. That's a Saturday night game.
(13:39):
And you have number six Notre Dame at number ten
Miami on Sunday night. That's being Labor Day weekend. Going
into it. Seth Hemberson points out that there have never
been this many games between top ten teams on any
opening weekend. In fact, it's only the fourth regular season
(14:02):
week of any kind since nineteen seventy eight to feature
three in one weekend November eleventh of twenty seventeen, September
thirtieth slash October first and twenty sixteen, and October twelfth
of two thousand and two.
Speaker 2 (14:17):
I know what one of those was.
Speaker 1 (14:19):
That was Texas Ou there in the Cotton Bowl on
that one, he said. This week also has three more
ranked teams who are playing Power Conference opponents, plus a
fourth ranked team playing on the road. You have number
eight Alabama playing at Florida State. You have number thirteen
South Carolina hosting Virginia Tech. You have number twenty four
(14:42):
Tennessee playing Syracuse. That one's in Atlanta and he's and
it's got number twenty five Boise State playing tomorrow night
to get it all going at South Florida that's one
of the Thursday night games. And as Emerson points out,
there are five more Power Conference matchups, including Bill Belichick's
(15:03):
debut as North Carolina coach tomorrow night. Another headliner, This
one's on ESPN. You have Nebraska and Cincinnati playing in
Arrowhead Stateium in Kansas City. You have Georgia check at
Colorado on Friday night. You have auburnate Baylor on Friday night.
That's a Fox telecast. That's the big blackout that they
have going on in Waco, where the Bears are going
(15:24):
to come out in black uniforms and think the chrome
gold helmets. And this one has been an advanced sellout.
I had somebody in Waco tell me yesterday. You know,
there's times when they talked about a game being at
or close or near to a sellout, or in some
cases just a flat out sellout, and it might have
inflated it a little bit. There's no inflation this one.
(15:45):
There are no tickets to be had unless you go
through the secondary markets. That's a sellout. Ubnate Baylor Saturday
night late night. What we used to refer to is
PAC twelve after Dark. It's two former PAC twelve teams.
One now is a big twelve, the other's big ten.
You taught UCLA. And on Monday night, a Labor Day night.
(16:06):
Remember there's no NFL football regular season football until the
season debut a week from tomorrow, when the Cowboys play
in philadelphiagainst the Eagles. So there is, by custom a
Labor Day night matchup. And this one is TCU at
North Carolina. So, as he points out, that's a total
of eleven games between Power Conference teams. Is it the
(16:31):
best Week one ever? Well, it's hard to be definitive,
especially because the concept of Week one gets trickier the
farther back you trace it. The college football season has
had more staggered starts prior to the nineteen nineties. For example,
a matchup between number one Notre Dame and number two
Michigan in nineteen eighty nine was the Wolverines opener, but
the Fighting Iris had opened up seventeen days earlier. The
(16:54):
most recent competition is the twenty sixteen season opener, which
had ten Power Conference matchups and four games between top
twenty five teams. Though none of those games were top
ten matchups, it did end up memorable, Texas upsetting Notre
Dame on Sunday night, as Emerson points out so astutely
(17:15):
to ignite years of Texas's back means yeah, I still
have Joe tessitord the thing for that, because that was
not the case.
Speaker 2 (17:24):
They were not bad.
Speaker 1 (17:26):
Wisconsin upset number five LSU at lambeau Field. That was
one of five matchups featuring ranked teams that weekend and
either neutral sites or NFL stadiums.
Speaker 2 (17:36):
This year, however, all.
Speaker 1 (17:38):
Three of the top ten matchups are at campus sites,
as are seven of the Power Conference matchups that could add.
Speaker 2 (17:46):
To the mystique. So that's something else to keep in mind.
Speaker 1 (17:51):
As if it is indeed the best week one ever
in college football, Well, one guy's getting ready for it
is Michael Tapp, the Longhorn's veteran back for another year,
and our man Will Matthews, our sideline reporter on the
Long Worn Radio Network from lear Field, who takes the
(18:11):
opportunity to sit down with different Long Worn players each week.
We heard a couple of his conversations yesterday. Let's hear
a couple of them today, starting with his visit with
the senior from Westling.
Speaker 6 (18:24):
Michael Taff, Now is your team, although the guys are
gone you're the older guy now and how does that feel?
Speaker 7 (18:34):
Yeah, it feels cool.
Speaker 8 (18:35):
I mean, you know, when new people come on campus,
it's like, geez, I'm old.
Speaker 7 (18:44):
But but it's been cool as far as the team.
Speaker 8 (18:47):
Like when you have people that trust you and respect you,
to believe in you and listen to you when you talk,
that means a lot.
Speaker 7 (18:55):
Because I was the guy that was looking up you
know back in the day.
Speaker 8 (19:00):
So now and I am a guy, it's been really
cool and just trying to be in this type of
the locker room and spread what I know and spread
all the knowledge that I can.
Speaker 6 (19:07):
So coach start talked about how fun and funny you
guys are, but when I interact with you, there is
a confidence. Of course it is fun and funny, but
there's a focus on a confidence. Where do you think
that that has really started to explode inside of the team.
Speaker 9 (19:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (19:24):
I try to tell people like, you're out Texas for
a reason.
Speaker 8 (19:28):
No matter what people say around the country, Texas is
the definition of success.
Speaker 7 (19:33):
Do you look around at me. We're in the road
of all these trophies and so.
Speaker 9 (19:38):
You belong here.
Speaker 8 (19:38):
So to go out and play like it, you should
have confidence knowing that you're better than the guy run
across from you, because.
Speaker 7 (19:46):
You gotta believe that.
Speaker 6 (19:47):
So so over the last couple of years, Texas had
to play in.
Speaker 10 (19:53):
The underdog card.
Speaker 9 (19:54):
Yeah you know, like you know, we're the we gotta
get up there. And you know, if you guys.
Speaker 6 (19:59):
Are here right now, what does it mean to not
have the underdog card and to be playing from the
front and be like, hey, we number one, We got
to do anything.
Speaker 7 (20:08):
Yeah, it feels good.
Speaker 8 (20:09):
But at the end of the day, like I kind
of like being the underdog. So if people have that
same attitude, good, If people have the confidence attitude, good.
Speaker 7 (20:20):
Run with both of them.
Speaker 8 (20:23):
I think as the leader, you got to know who
you're trying to lead, you know, like, is it a
guy that's a little bit shy, is a guy that's
overally confident?
Speaker 7 (20:30):
How where do you want to balance him out?
Speaker 9 (20:32):
You know?
Speaker 7 (20:32):
And so you just got to know.
Speaker 8 (20:33):
Your personality and attacking how you want to You played
a couple of snaps year, You've spent a couple of
years here.
Speaker 9 (20:40):
What is the legacy that you are looking to leave
after this year?
Speaker 7 (20:44):
Significance?
Speaker 6 (20:46):
However that maybe go into that you gotta go what
is significance.
Speaker 9 (20:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (20:50):
Yeah, I don't know what that is right now, whatever
God has in store for me, but I know that
when my name gets brought up, I want it to
be not somebody that's remembered for twenty picks, not some
guy that's remembered for one hundred and five tackles, but
a guy that's remembered as significant, how his teammates remember him,
(21:11):
how the coaches remember him, how the custodian remembers him.
Speaker 9 (21:16):
And also a winner.
Speaker 8 (21:19):
So as much as I want to be significant, I
also want to be a winner.
Speaker 6 (21:22):
And as to the last season for Michael taff and
you get to just really kind of look at the
whole thing.
Speaker 9 (21:32):
What are going to be the things that you take
with you?
Speaker 8 (21:34):
Oh man, I think I think I try to rush
it too much for four years. In this last year
deciding to come back, what I told myself and what
I keep telling myself every day is be so grateful
for it.
Speaker 7 (21:50):
Not a lot of times in your life.
Speaker 8 (21:52):
Again, are you gonna get free three meals a day,
free treatment, free recovery great, yeah, free apparels yeah. And
by the way, you're living out your dream going to
play in that field, and of one hundred and five
thousand fans.
Speaker 7 (22:11):
So just trying to be grateful for real.
Speaker 1 (22:13):
All right, there it is Michael taff there. It's always
good to visit with him. All right, coming up, I'll
tell you what before we get to the coming up
for inconceisble, I want to get Cam Parker's opinion on.
Speaker 2 (22:29):
This before we get to the break.
Speaker 1 (22:32):
And that was the announcement that came down today from
Kegan Bradley, the US Ryder Cup captain. There were many
thought he might many thought he should have selected himself
as a playing captain. He would have been the first
playing captain in sixty two years, didn't dow it? His
(22:55):
team was that announced today? Justin Thomas Collin Morikawa, Ben Griffin,
Cameron Young, Patrick Cantley and Sam Burns. Those were the
captain's choices there against along with obviously Scottie Scheffler, JJ Spond, Sanders, Shofley, Russell, Henley,
(23:16):
Harris English and bryceon Shamba who have qualified. There's some
people are kind of miffed thinking that he should have
named himself.
Speaker 2 (23:25):
What what's your take on that?
Speaker 3 (23:26):
I would have been okay if he had named himself
over Morikawa. But you mentioned he would have been the
first playing captain in sixty two years, and everything you
heard from the European side was like, yeah, go ahead
and name yourself as a playing captain. We want that,
because how in the world is he going to be
a captain when he's out in the middle of the
(23:47):
golf course playing around, and what happens if he doesn't
play well and he keeps picking himself or vice versas.
What if he's playing well and he's afraid of putting
himself out there for a third time, it made more
sense for him to unless he automatically qualified, to just
pick somebody else. And a lot of times get caught
(24:09):
up in the eleventh and twelfth man of these Ryder
Cup teams when Craig really it's decided by how your
best players play. The Ryder Cup will not be decided
based on how Keekon Bradley would have played, or how
Morikawa or Sam Burns. It'll be decided on how bryceon
the Shambo plays, how Scotti Scheffler plays, how Russell Henley,
how Jjson. Will be decided by the top six guys,
(24:32):
the best six players, maybe the best day. It won't
be decided by the eleventh or twelfth guy. It's always
a misconception, and you know, for the most part, it's
become a huge storyline because of Keeth and Bradley, And
he probably could have squashed this a lot earlier. And
I listened to I listened to the press conference and
he actually said he never really thought about picking himself.
(24:54):
And then he went out Harford and he was like, Okay,
I'll probably have to entertain the idea. But he's known
for Wow, he was never going to pick himself. It
probably would have been a lot easier if he had
just said that instead of continuing to talk about it.
I mean, even after the Tour Championship this past weekend,
it still kind of seemed like he was going to
pick himself, and a lot of people in the media
thought he was going to pick himself. He probably could
(25:16):
have squashed this if he just came out in July
and said, hey, you know what, I'm not going to
pick myself. But he, you know, kept it on the
table and that led to all this discourse. But I
think this team is an excellent team. You know, Marikawa,
he made it to the final thirty, but his post
run interview on Sunday, he talked about he doesn't know
where his iron shots are going, which is a little worrisome,
(25:39):
but also I mean outside of Maricawa. I mean, if
he doesn't pick himself, then you know, maybe it's Matt McNeely,
who had a great year at the same time, has
ever played in the Ryder Cup. Do you go with
someone like Andrew Novak who hasn't played. Do you go
with Jordan Spieth who has been on the Ryder Cup
teams but his game has fallen off the planet last
couple of months. So I think it's a really good twelve.
(26:00):
The US are playing at beth Page. It's a course
that is set up for those who can drive the longest.
From my understanding, they're basically taking away the rough at
this tournament, which is going to benefit the Americans because
the Europeans advantages definitely their ball striking. It's why the
fairways in was it Italy or sorry, in Rome we're
five yards wide. The Americans are going to make beth
(26:22):
Page one hundred yards wide, so the course favors the Americans.
The best golf in the world is an American. I'm
excited for this. I'm pumped up give me a team
USA the win this year.
Speaker 2 (26:33):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (26:34):
To your point is at that news conference yesterday in
Frisco at the PGA of America headquarters, his quote was,
the last forty eight hours we had the team set,
we weren't scrambling at all. This was really a tough decision.
I will say there was a point where I was playing.
All these guys stepped up in a major way and
played the way on to this team. And that's something
that I'm really proud of, is something that I really wanted.
(26:56):
You know why this draws so much attention. You know
who the last playing captain was so sixty years ago,
vision nineteen sixty three.
Speaker 2 (27:07):
I'm trying to think, would that have been Arnold? Very
good Arnold Palmer? By the way, was that east Lake? Really?
Was that east Lake?
Speaker 5 (27:14):
Okay?
Speaker 1 (27:15):
In nineteen sixty three, that's the last time the Ryder
Cup had a playing captain, Arnold Palmer. It made sense.
He was at the top of his game there in
the early sixties.
Speaker 3 (27:26):
The only playing captain that would probably probably ever make
sense would be Tiger Woods.
Speaker 2 (27:30):
Yeah, anyone else?
Speaker 5 (27:31):
Like going back?
Speaker 3 (27:33):
Yeah, maybe Scotty, because who knows if Scotty's still playing
this good in in ten, fifteen, twenty years. There's probably
no one else who trust as a captain. Maybe, but
there's a reason why the Europeans don't have playing captains,
and that's why the Europeans have kind of dominated this
event the last couple decades or so.
Speaker 2 (27:49):
When Colin Montgomery was captain, he didn't play, did he?
Speaker 1 (27:53):
I don't think so, can double check that. I don't
think he was while Cam checks that. Well, take a break.
When we come back. We've got inconceivable boy. We have
a fast food update for you. Stay tuned for that
when we continue on thirteen under the Zone. I'm glad
to have you with us on this yacht rock Wednesday afternoon.
My name is Craig Way. Thanks for joining us. Jay
Carman our producer alongside as well. Hey, I wanted to
(28:14):
mention something before we got too much further into it,
and I'll remind everybody of it again later. We are recording,
as we've done in the past few years. We're recording
the first Longhorn Weekly with Coach Sark program of the
season this evening. However, there's something you need to know.
(28:35):
We will not be at Pluckers with the show this year,
and it's for a variety of factors. And one of
the advantages that will come from this, however, is that
not only will coach Sark be with us now because
it's going to be in a spot where there won't
(28:57):
be say, alive all dance with us, so it'll be us,
but because where we'll be on campus, it'll give Sark
a opportunity to bring former players alongside staff members. And
in fact, our first program of the season that will
(29:17):
record the sevening will feature lifetime Longhorn Jamal Charles and
also Dwayne a Keina from the coaching staff. But it's
not going to be in front of an audience. It's
not going to be at Pluckers. However, you will still
be able to see it through long Worn Network, through
(29:39):
the through the app and the streaming service long Worn Network,
through Texas long worns dot Com, and obviously you'll be
able to hear it here on the zone. Most of
the time, the program will air at seven o'clock, but
here late in the regular season for the Round Rock Express,
the program will actually move up a little bit, like
(30:00):
for example, tomorrow's debut of it will air at five
o'clock with an early round Rock Express game, and then
what we are also going to do is re air
the program Friday afternoons at five, So even on weeks
where it's like Thursday night at seven when it normally
comes down, you'll hear it again Friday afternoon at five.
(30:23):
This week, it'll happen to be five o'clock both tomorrow
and Friday, so if you miss it tomorrow, it'll be
there on Fridays as well. So I just wanted to
let you know that that the program will not be
at Pluckers this season, and it will be recorded on
campus and then it'll be.
Speaker 2 (30:39):
Played at the time you'll be able to hear it.
Speaker 1 (30:41):
Okay, Now, there's a couple of things I wanted to
get to from the text line. Somebody pointing out when
both Cameron Parker and Jay Herman we're talking about growing
up as fans of opposing NFC East rivals Dallas in Washington,
(31:04):
and I'm old enough to remember when that was real
hot and heavy back in starting the late sixties, but
really throughout the decade of the seventies and into the
eighties as well, it was it was the Hoppin' and
Bopin' rivalry.
Speaker 2 (31:19):
It was the Yankees Red Sox of the NFL back.
Speaker 9 (31:23):
In the day.
Speaker 1 (31:23):
Your folks ever tell you that, by the way, since
you're Washington, DC native, jakeb.
Speaker 5 (31:27):
Yeah, they did. They did.
Speaker 4 (31:28):
And my dad actually grew up a Saints fan originally,
so you.
Speaker 2 (31:32):
Know, was he from New Orleans?
Speaker 4 (31:34):
No, you grew up in Birmingham, Okay, so yeah, but
a little bit newer to the area.
Speaker 5 (31:38):
But he was in d C.
Speaker 4 (31:40):
He missed the great runs of the nineties and was
there for the Dan Snyder years.
Speaker 2 (31:45):
Oh okay, only under so of course.
Speaker 1 (31:52):
And then I asked, you guys, you know who is
the rival you most detested. And because of time being
different in the rivalry kind of really smoldering and going
down between Dallas and Washington, you still see it pop
up a little bit, but mainly with the rise of
both the Eagles and the Giants. It changed things so
that for Jake he talked about Philadelphia being the rival
(32:16):
he most wanted to defeat. For Cam it was the Giants,
and both happened to fall when both of you guys
saw your teams foiled by those rivals. The Eagles last
year beating the Commanders in the NFC Championship, the Cowboys twice,
losing to the Giants, and key moments there, including in
the playoffs that knocked them out as well.
Speaker 2 (32:36):
So was that going to the text line?
Speaker 1 (32:38):
Somebody said, if you go back, he said to the
opening segment, he said, I'm fifty eight years old.
Speaker 2 (32:45):
He said, going up, I.
Speaker 1 (32:46):
Hated the Cardinals, Conrad Dobler and Dan Dierdorf in that group.
And some folks will go, what the Cardinals. The Cardinals
aren't even the same division. They were for many many years,
the Saint Louis Cardinals. Yeah, the football Cardinals. The Saint
Louis Football Cardinals were in the NFC East.
Speaker 2 (33:08):
They were.
Speaker 1 (33:09):
Their original franchise was in Chicago, where the Chicago Cardinals
back in the thirties and the forties and the fifties,
they played at Comiskey Park, the White sox O ball Park,
with the Bears playing at Wrigley Field and also at
Soldier Field back in the day, but the Cardinals were there.
Speaker 2 (33:29):
Used an interesting footnote.
Speaker 1 (33:32):
The Cardinals were going to be for sale in the
late fifties and this young entrepreneur tried to buy the
Cardinals and he was blocked by the NFL from purchasing them,
and so on his plane flight home from Chicago he
(33:53):
was going home to Dallas, and this young entrepreneur said, well,
if I can't have a franchise in the NFL, I'll
just get guys and startup league. That young man's name
in age twenty six was Lamar Hunt. And as the
late Paul Harvey used to say, and now you know
the rest of the story, he went and established the AFL.
(34:14):
He had the Dallas Texans, which became what is currently
the Kansas City Chiefs. But it started with his bid
to buy the Chicago Cardinals. In the NFL blocked them
from doing that, so the Cardinals were there. They found
another buyer and they moved to Saint Louis in nineteen
sixty and they were there until about eighty seven, I
believe it was, and then they moved to Phoenix and
they were originally the Phoenix Cardinals, but then they took
the name in the Arizona Cardinals, later the inverse of
(34:37):
what the Marlins have done, going from Florida Marlins to
Miami Marlins. So it really started that. And there were
years in the seventies where the Cardinals were good. They
won a couple of NFC East titles. They were a
traditional foil of the Cowboys and it was tough going
to Saint Louis to play them. So that's why I
understand the comment there from the Texter said he hated
(34:57):
the Cardinals. Conrad Dobler and Dan Deardorf a two very
very really good and mean offensive line. Of course, Deerdorf
went on the Monday Night Football Fame to my inconceivable
note about the fast foods that disappeared, I said, frings
from Jack at the Box. Somebody pointed out that five
(35:20):
guys has frings on their menu.
Speaker 2 (35:22):
Where even get the combo?
Speaker 1 (35:23):
Oh yeah, yeah, it's a good burner too, But you
can get French fries and onion rings there at five guys.
Speaker 4 (35:29):
Still better as a combo than a franken fry tries.
Speaker 5 (35:33):
To be a ring.
Speaker 2 (35:34):
Yeah, okay.
Speaker 1 (35:37):
Nick and San Angelo asked, I'm leaving for Ohio on
Friday afternoon with my nine year old daughter. Do we
feel like the Buckeye fan base will be welcoming or
should we proceed with caution?
Speaker 8 (35:47):
Well?
Speaker 1 (35:48):
I always think when you're an opposing teams fan, if
you're wearing your colors of the opposing team, you do
keep your head on the swivel. But I heard both
sides of it twenty years ago when Texas played in Columbus,
and I heard it from long worn fans who said
they were treated very, very nice, and I heard from
(36:08):
those who said they were not, the biggest difference between
then and now is that game.
Speaker 2 (36:14):
Was a night game. This game is at noon Eastern.
So how shall I put this?
Speaker 1 (36:19):
Less time for folks to get lubricated, so to speak,
oiled up, you might say, you know, overserved. So I
think he'll be okay, Nick Chuck and Houston says, I'm
not buying that whole Micah Parsons back tightness thing. He
says it bothers him and it's tight. But the Cowboys
had MRIs done and it didn't reveal anything, just that
(36:46):
he had soreness going on. There was one other element
that I wanted to mention out of that story that
I did or brought reference to last hour, the article
by seth Emmer from The Athletic, when the headline is
is this college Football's best week one ever?
Speaker 2 (37:10):
From Columbus to Clemson to Miami. Buckle up?
Speaker 1 (37:13):
And he says there's evidence to suggest that it is
because for the first time ever, you have three top
ten matchups on Week one. That's never happened in the
history of the AP Poll. The AP Preseason Poll started
in nineteen fifty and there's never been three top ten
matchups on Week one. Now there's different also over the years,
(37:35):
some exceptions with some things, but it was a little
bit different. But Seth Emerson's piece basically said, there's nothing
quite ready to match it, and a lot of it
happened by luck and happen stance because, as he says,
in college football, nobody's in charge. But then he goes
(37:57):
on and this is an interesting point, he said, maybe
the closest to in charge when it comes to non
conference scheduling is a former ESPN executive who runs Gridiron Schedule.
This is a consulting firm that connects programs looking for games.
(38:17):
The executive, the former ESPN executive is Dave Brown.
Speaker 2 (38:22):
Some of you may recognize that name.
Speaker 1 (38:25):
Dave Brown was the programming executive who was in charge
of Longhorn Network when it started in twenty ten. He
made a lot of enemies quickly, not in the Longhorn
community but outside in the Big twelve and all that
who thought it would be an unfair recruiting advantage for
Texas to have an institutional network on the air, And
they probably exacerbated the situation when they were talking about
(38:48):
having high school football games on it. They talked to
me about doing the high school games, and he went
as far as to be quoted as saying he was
talking about when Jonathan Gray was coming out of a
lad Oh, the great running back.
Speaker 2 (38:59):
He said, you'll be able to watch.
Speaker 1 (39:01):
He was already committed to Texas after his junior year,
and he was saying things like, you'll be able to
watch Jonathan Gray as he plays his senior year, and
all these future long warns will eventually there are enough
people that complained about it in the NCAAA said nope,
no institutional networks can televise high school football games.
Speaker 2 (39:18):
So that went by the wayside.
Speaker 1 (39:20):
Dave ultimately went by the wayside and moved out to California.
Was working for ESPN, and now he works, like we said,
he runs Gridiron Schedule. That's this consulting firm that connects
programs looking for games, and so Seth Emerson was talking
to him yesterday about this, and Emerson asked him about
(39:43):
next year and the year after and.
Speaker 2 (39:44):
Said, hey, is anything going to be like this?
Speaker 1 (39:47):
And he said Dave Brown looked down at his spreadsheet
and said, in the coming years, you're not getting anything
near this, not even close now. As Emerson points out,
he said, a lot of that it's due to the
fact the games are spread out over the first two weeks.
The opening week in twenty twenty six has six Power
(40:08):
Conference games, with Clemson's return dated LSU, Boise State at Oregon,
buying Me at South Carolina the only ones between teams
that are ranked right now. But the second week of
next year has Ohio State going back to Texas. Remember
the logruns opening with Texas State at home before Ohio
State returns. Also in the second week next year, Oklahoma's
(40:31):
at Michigan and there are three other Power Conference games.
So it's there. It's just not all power packed into
the first week. And as Emerson examined it, he said,
so why did the twenty twenty five season end up
so front loaded?
Speaker 2 (40:47):
Mostly luck?
Speaker 1 (40:48):
Ohio State and Texas last played a regular season game
in two thousand and six. That's when the log Orne
were coming off the National Championship. Redchhard freshman Colt McCoy
was taking the range at quarterback. Texas had beaten Ohio
State in the Horseshoe, as we pointed out twenty years
ago it was two thousand and five, twenty five to
twenty two, and then held that number two ranking all
(41:09):
the way through the rest of the regular season and
the Big twelve championship game where they beat Colorado seventy
to three, and then it was onto the Rose Bowl
to take on defending national champion in the USC and
we all know how that all turned out, with Texas
winning it. So the last time they had played a
regular season game was two thousand and six. As Emerson
points out, this seems perfectly timed nine months after they
(41:34):
met in the CFP semifinals. Really actually about eight months
when you're looking at the time, it's almost eight months
to the day in fact, and ahead of a possible
rematch and this year's playoff. It seems to be perfect timing.
But this game, part of a home and home, wasn't
scheduled last year or the year before that or the
(41:54):
year before that. No, this Texas Ohio State series was
originally scheduled in twenty twelve when Urban Meyer was in
his first year in Columbus and Mack Brown was the
Longhorns coach. It was originally set for twenty twenty two
to twenty twenty three, but was pushed back to twenty
twenty five in January of twenty twenty. At that point,
(42:17):
no one could have known it would wind up being
a matchup of top three teams. LSU and Clemson, which
met in the National Championship Game to cap the twenty
nineteen season, arranged their game, the first ever in the
regular season, for this Saturday. The year before that, when
Dan Radikovich, who's now the athletic director of Miami, was
(42:38):
Clemson's athletic director. Radikovich had worked at LSU, so we
called up an old friend in the LSU athletic department
and came together pretty quickly. Notre Daane is playing Miami
as part of the ACC's five games a year scheduling
agreement with the Fighting Ivers. Remember they're kind of a
scheduling partner and they play in the ACC and other sports,
(43:00):
not in football, where they still operate as an independent.
It was originally supposed to happen a couple of years ago,
but it was moved at Miami's request because then new
head coach Mario Christobal wanted some time to get his
roster in place now he's coming off a nine in
three season, and when the conference office asked both schools
if they would be willing to play on Week one
and on Sunday night, knowing it would need more attention,
(43:22):
both agreed. Miami and Notre Dame were much more acquainted
with each other than Week one's other Marque opponents, most
famously for the two decades of their near annual play
between nineteen seventy and nineteen ninety that included the famous
Catholics Versus Convicts game. They've also played four times since
twenty ten, this being the third one as part of
the Notre Dame acc scheduling agreement, so they're pretty excited
(43:45):
about that. Georgia Tech in Colorado, two teams that by
the way, shared the nineteen to ninety national championship with
the split Polls, have never played, so that's a new
thing as well. The question is what will happen in
future Week ones because there's mixed signals. Alabama and West
Virginia canceled. I mentioned this yesterday their home and home
(44:07):
series for twenty twenty six, twenty twenty seven. They cited
the SEC's move to a nine game schedule being the
main difference, but Alabama for now is keeping a home
and home with Ohio State, as is Georgia. The SEC
and perhaps the ACC going to nine games will decrease
the slots available for marquee non conference matchups, and most
(44:30):
programs to want to ensure seven home games per season
are failing that six plus a high revenue neutral site game,
which is basically what Texas deals with with the OU game.
As well as they say playoff expansion could help giving
teams a little more wiggle room to afford early season losses.
But expansion also doesn't deserve much credit for this week's
(44:53):
big set of games. Almost all were scheduled before it
was known that the CFP would even be expanding the
twelve teams, So anyway, that's that's.
Speaker 2 (45:02):
Where that is.
Speaker 1 (45:03):
And also I think it's important to keep in mind
when we brought up the SEC expansion topic last week
and when it became official and when the Commissioner Greg
Sanki announced that it was also made plainly stated that
the expectation and mandate will be for all SEC schools
(45:29):
to play at least one power for conference opponent in
non conference play every year.
Speaker 2 (45:33):
And they all did it last year.
Speaker 1 (45:36):
It kind of got glossed over, but they did, and
he said, you know, it's got to It's got to
be that way.
Speaker 2 (45:44):
We want that to happen.
Speaker 1 (45:45):
So even with a nine game conference schedule on the
future slate for the SEC, they're going to continue to
play at least one power for opponent every year.
Speaker 2 (45:55):
So that's a good thing.
Speaker 11 (45:56):
All right.
Speaker 1 (45:57):
Up next conversation Longhorns running back quin Travian Weisner. Trey
will sit down with our Will Matthews when we continue
on this shot Rock Wednesday afternoon on sports Radio AM
thirteen under the Zone. All right, in talking Long Horns
football and getting ready for this matchup of the Ohio
State Buckeyes. A lot has been said about the newness
(46:26):
on both sides, new starting quarterbacks, largely new starting offensive
line for Texas, even though the guys have a lot
of experience, same thing with the Oio State defensive front.
One of their proven known returning commodities, however, for the
Longhorns is their junior running back from De Soto. Contravian
(46:47):
Wisner and Trey sat down with our Will Matthews.
Speaker 9 (46:51):
All right, mister wiser.
Speaker 6 (46:53):
First of all, I walked over and I saw you,
and I was like, this guy has put on a
couple of LB's. Yeah, talk me through your process in
the off season. How have you beefed.
Speaker 9 (47:03):
Up like this? You probably I don't know if you've
seen it or not, but.
Speaker 12 (47:08):
I had to cut back on a little McDonald's.
Speaker 9 (47:11):
McDonald's was just delicious.
Speaker 12 (47:13):
Yeah, you know, so I definitely have to. I just
really really what it was like I told you, I
moved my mom hope, so she's cooking more often, and
really I just have to lock in, you know, like
me wanting to make this my last year and things
of that nature, and just seeing that the that the
process is processing, so you know, you gotta start cutting
back on certain things that's stopping your process. Not saying
(47:36):
McDonald's was stopping my process, but it kind of it
might have caused a soft tissue injury or you know,
me to be off my weight how I want to be.
So definitely just locking down on my diet, I'm gonna say,
because the weight room things.
Speaker 9 (47:48):
Of that nature was never a problem for me.
Speaker 2 (47:50):
It was like eating had this.
Speaker 6 (47:51):
So yeah, definitely that and you just talking about the process.
Speaker 9 (47:55):
Talk people through the process.
Speaker 11 (47:56):
For you, I know that's been a theme.
Speaker 6 (47:59):
Ever since I've got to know you have the last
couple of years you've been really focused on what you
need to do on and off the field and have
called it the process.
Speaker 9 (48:06):
Tell us, tell us what that means.
Speaker 12 (48:08):
So for me, I just feel like the process is
essentially it's.
Speaker 9 (48:13):
More than my goals and aspiration.
Speaker 12 (48:14):
You know, you can set your goals and you can
achieve your goals, but the process never ends, like the
process goals when you're when you pass, you know, I
want to pass my process down to my children and
their children.
Speaker 9 (48:25):
So I feel like the process is the generational wealth
side of things.
Speaker 12 (48:29):
But yeah, so I feel like that's that's how it
break my processes down. It's deeper than me just waking
up in the morning, saying my prayers, coming to practice, leave.
Speaker 9 (48:38):
And going home.
Speaker 12 (48:38):
It's deeper than all that because those are my dreams
and goals. So besides that, that's my process.
Speaker 6 (48:45):
And as you continually develop refinement process, talkers through like
this is like you saw the last game.
Speaker 9 (48:54):
You were in the last game. There's there's stuff to do.
Speaker 6 (48:57):
There, there's a there's a name to be made for
yourself again as you're walking into game week one, getting
ready for the opponent.
Speaker 9 (49:05):
Doesn't matter the opponent, yeah.
Speaker 6 (49:06):
But getting ready for this opponent, what does that process
do for you? And how does that keep you focused?
Speaker 9 (49:11):
Just going back and rekindling with my family.
Speaker 12 (49:14):
I feel like a lot of times athletes who are
in my shoes, we tend to get caught up and
so caught up and oh, I got a big game
come in or next week, I got another big game
an and we don't rekindle with the things that keeps
us at ease and keeps us to our minds at peace.
Me and my family we big on God, We big
(49:34):
on the spirit. So anytime I can hit my mom
up and get a word, I'm doing that. My little
brother stays with me, So anytime I go home and
I can see that he's off, we'll top it up,
you know, and try.
Speaker 9 (49:45):
To just lift each other up.
Speaker 12 (49:47):
Because at the end of the day, they are my foundation,
you know, like my family is. It's everything within me.
So as far as I'm going, they coming with me.
So you know, it's like no matter what I how
I do it, when I do it, my family's always
in mind. They always are called away, and really that's
that's the way trickles my process opward. Anytime I could
(50:10):
feel myself trickling down, I know it's because me and
my family ain't. It's tapped in as we supposed to be,
you know what I'm saying.
Speaker 9 (50:16):
So as far as that, definitely my family making the
main thing the main thing.
Speaker 6 (50:22):
As you continue that and bring it into this week,
you know, it could feel as if there may be
y'all have something to prove. And I'm sure you've been
chewing on what happened at the end of the season
all of this time.
Speaker 9 (50:36):
Talk us through that.
Speaker 6 (50:37):
What what do you want to bring to the team
this weekend?
Speaker 12 (50:43):
I just felt like last year, you know, my sophomore
season was the first year that I've actually been in
a fight.
Speaker 9 (50:49):
Freshman year, I was a.
Speaker 12 (50:50):
Special Teams All American, you could say, so I had
an idea of what it took at the collegiate level,
but not as far as taking this me each rips
at running back.
Speaker 9 (51:01):
So really what I took from last year was specifically
the last game.
Speaker 12 (51:06):
What I took from that was no matter what, be
who I am. I feel like last year.
Speaker 11 (51:11):
In the last game, I kind.
Speaker 12 (51:12):
Of like, I kind of like let my doubts turn
me down, not far as not as as so much
as a player, because I feel like I still contribute well.
But when when your mental side it's lower, your physical
side drops also.
Speaker 9 (51:27):
So now I'm on the field.
Speaker 12 (51:28):
And I got a million thoughts going through my head
that's not really adding up with my physical attribute.
Speaker 9 (51:34):
So now I can't really ruin how I want to
ruin because I got so much going on.
Speaker 12 (51:37):
So from that last game, I definitely say this year,
coming in to any week, I need to be more
mentally tapped in, more mentally prepared for anything, you know,
not just a bad snap or a drop pass or fumble.
I need to be prepared for Okay, I just scored
a touchdown. How do I mentally mentally prepare myself for
the next drive, or how do I mentally prepare myself for.
Speaker 2 (51:59):
The fourth quarter?
Speaker 9 (52:00):
You know.
Speaker 12 (52:00):
So I definitely say my mental state I got to
improved some more.
Speaker 1 (52:06):
And I expect that's a guy who's constantly striving to
be better. And that's why when Sark was asked at
the news conference the other day about who is really
that go to guy that really fires up the offense,
just as Anthony Hill does with defense. He said, there's
several guys, but he started with Tray Weisner and it
makes sense.
Speaker 2 (52:25):
We have more coming up.
Speaker 1 (52:26):
We'll continue here on Sports Radio AAM thirteen under the
Zone for the Saturday morning kickoff to the season opener,
As Texas will take on the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Speaker 2 (52:37):
Again.
Speaker 1 (52:38):
Our coverage will begin at eight am, and that'll start
with long Orange Game Day coming away beginning at eight
a m. And then the kickoff is the network pregame
at ten in the kickoff is at eleven o'clock. When
you were a student Jake at University of Texas, what
(53:02):
was your normal routine on a.
Speaker 2 (53:05):
Saturday football logorns game day? Home and rugged?
Speaker 4 (53:10):
I was there early, especially at home. And here's why.
You had to show up both when the gates opened
and with your group to get the wristbands for the
same section. So we were outside the gates ready to
go when they opened the games. Remember that old LSU stampede. Yeah,
that's when they sort of changed the policy around to.
Speaker 1 (53:32):
Because as soon as it just kind of trampled their
way through, is what I was told.
Speaker 4 (53:37):
Yeah, and so from there they had to go to
the wristband policy. But on the road shoot, I had
to be somewhere with sound. I as a play by
play junkie myself, I always liked to hear the sound
of the game, So I don't care if it was
the most fun scene in Austin. If it didn't have sound,
I probably wasn't too happy of a camper. Interesting, Okay,
So how large was your quote unquote group? I had
(54:01):
a good group of five or six guys, the five
guys that I lived with, especially my junior and senior year.
Speaker 5 (54:06):
We would we would.
Speaker 4 (54:07):
Try to watch the games together. That group would would
grow as some significant others came into the picture.
Speaker 2 (54:12):
Yeah, yeah, all right, so I get I get that.
Speaker 1 (54:14):
Okay, So so your whole group had to be that
How how early would you get let's say, well, let's
say it's an eleven am kickoff, like the home opener
will be next week against San Jose State, So eleven
am kickoff? How far in advance were you and your
group outside dk R at the student entrance.
Speaker 4 (54:34):
I don't remember if we had any real marquee games
at eleven am when when I was a student there,
And of course so that was my freshman year.
Speaker 2 (54:43):
Was were you still there in Alabama? Came through it?
Speaker 5 (54:46):
No, that was the first year after I was gone.
Speaker 4 (54:49):
So my freshman year was the Sugar Bowl win, right,
Sam Ellinger, Tom Urban Beebo going after uggah.
Speaker 9 (54:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (54:54):
So but say for for an eleven AM Conference game,
I'm probably walking from West Campus just after.
Speaker 2 (55:03):
Nine, okay, okay, And there were things to.
Speaker 4 (55:06):
Do down there sometimes when college game day was in town,
I went there, went to the little Heisman House pop up,
saw some of the live music.
Speaker 2 (55:12):
I was.
Speaker 4 (55:13):
I like to be down there early. That's how I
am with most things. Okay, all right, I was the
guy dragging everybody. They're oh, we're gonna be there too early?
Speaker 5 (55:21):
No such thing.
Speaker 9 (55:22):
All right.
Speaker 2 (55:22):
Did you go on the road much to road games?
Speaker 4 (55:25):
I went to the Big twelve championship game at Jerry.
Speaker 1 (55:27):
World, the one in eighteen against Oklahoma. Yes, okay, but
the kickoff return called back?
Speaker 13 (55:33):
Yeah? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (55:34):
Yeah?
Speaker 11 (55:35):
Did you?
Speaker 9 (55:38):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (55:40):
I was trying to think if were you at the
Notre Dame season opener on Sunday night Labor Day weekend
in sixteen?
Speaker 5 (55:48):
No, that was I would have been in high school.
Speaker 2 (55:50):
That pre day.
Speaker 1 (55:51):
To dude, yes, okay, all right, okay, what was the
wildest thing you ever saw at long one football game?
From like fans or the situation? What was the wildest
scene you ever encountered?
Speaker 5 (56:07):
I think.
Speaker 4 (56:09):
This is not a wild scene, but just one of
those moments you can't make up. After Keyante Ingram's drop
in the end zone first half against LSU when they
went forward on fourth down. Yeah, tight shot of me
on the jumbo tron surrender cobra really and it actually
cheered me up because it was I couldn't believe the
(56:29):
absurdity of the moment.
Speaker 9 (56:30):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (56:31):
Yeah, wildest scene had to be that stampede, that LSU stampede.
Speaker 5 (56:34):
Oh man, we had to.
Speaker 4 (56:36):
We started aiming for one section and ended up in
the part of the student section kind of in that
opposite corner near the north end zone, right, and we
were next to a large LSU section.
Speaker 5 (56:48):
So that whole game was just a lot of chirping.
Speaker 1 (56:51):
Uh huh, I can imagine, all right, Uh yeah, there'll
be a lot of chirping and a lot of excitement
obviously in Ohio Stadium on Saturday when Texas plays Ohio
State there for the first time in twenty years.
Speaker 2 (57:06):
We'll be back to wrap ap hour number two. I'm
thirteen under the Zone.
Speaker 1 (57:08):
Glad to have you with us this afternoon with Jay
Herman there at the dials as the producer today again,
a couple of reminders of the programming that we have
coming up for you now. Tomorrow night at seven o'clock
you'll hear Long Worn Weekly with Steve Sarkeshan. That's our
season premiere edition. You hear it here on Wednesdays either
(57:32):
I believe it at six o'clock what with Round Rock
Express Baseball coming up, or at seven o'clock if there's
no game. So we'll have it for you tomorrow evening.
But there is a change with the show this year
that we need to let you know about. And I
talked about this in the two o'clock hour, but I
want to reiterate it for those who may have missed
out on this. The show is Coach Sart and it's
(57:57):
Long Worn Weekly, and we look back at the prior
and get you ready for the upcoming game. But there's
a couple of differences. One difference is we will have
more guests on the show this year. For example, we've
got Lifetime Longhorn and Outstanding College Football All American Jamal
(58:18):
Charles on the program, and we'll have different members of
the Long Worn coaching staff with us as well. And
we're starting off the show for the season premiere tomorrow
in having Dwayne A. Kena, the passing defensive passing game coordinator,
join us. And of course coach A Keina was there
(58:38):
when Texas won the national championship and five and he's
got a lot of great memories of Long Worn offensive
back so we'll do that.
Speaker 2 (58:46):
Now.
Speaker 1 (58:47):
That's some of the logistical changes within the show. But
there's a major change we have to tell you about.
For the past several years, as you've known Long Worn
Weekly with coach Sart for that coach Herman, before that
Coach Strong, those three coaches, we'd had the program out
at Pluckers out of the West Campus location, and we've
(59:10):
had it also a basketball We should tell you that
the show will not be at Pluckers this season, and
there are a variety of reasons going into it. But
one of the things that is helping the coaching staff
do because the show would fall when we record the
show on Wednesdays, the show would fall right in the
middle of either the tail end of practice or meetings
(59:32):
for the coaching staff, and there were other some other
logistical issues as well. So the show this season will
not be at Pluckers, so it won't be a live
audience situation where you can come out and see coach
and all that. You will still be able to watch
it when it is posted on LHN and KBVO when
(59:55):
it's reaired on Friday night, so you will still be
able to watch it. And of course, obviously you'll be
able to hear the program at seven o'clock or at
six o'clock depending on our Round Rock Express schedule. You'll
be able to hear that program here on thirteen hundred
the Zone, so you will be able to hear it,
you will be able to see it, but you will
not be able to be in person present for the
(01:00:19):
show this season, So just wanted to let you know that.
And especially with a lot of things going on on campus,
with the construction that's going on with a new practice facility,
it just was going to be easier facilitated this way,
So it'll in large measure it'll be a lot like
how it was when I was doing the show with
Mac Brown. We did that show in actuality from his
(01:00:41):
conference room in the coach's office.
Speaker 2 (01:00:44):
We won't be in there.
Speaker 1 (01:00:45):
We're in a different spot on campus, but we will
not be out at Pluckers. So we just wanted you
to know that in case you were planning to go
out the Pluckers to see the show in its taping tonight,
it won't be there. So just wanted to let you
know that. And those decisions were made, and so that's
going to be the situation. But we will still have
(01:01:06):
a lot of great conversation with Sark that you can
hear and again watch through Lahn and also through KBVO,
and you'll be able to hear from guests that we're
able to have with us out there also, So just
wanted to let you know that upfront that we do
have that that coming your way. So, all right, a
(01:01:28):
couple of other things to get to. I'm going to
jump to Major League Baseball for a few minutes, and
by the way, coming up here in just a few minutes,
you're going to hear from Arch Manning, So we'll hear
from the Longhorns quarterback coming up here in just a
few minutes, and then from Ethan Burke a little bit
later on in this hour, but I did want to
jump to Major League Baseball briefly.
Speaker 2 (01:01:48):
I don't know if you heard it.
Speaker 1 (01:01:50):
MLB did announce its twenty twenty six schedule yesterday, and
it's the earliest opening day in history. First of all,
the All Star Game will be in Philadelphia, there's a
soccer induced double header scheduled for Seattle, and if the
Athletics make the playoffs, there could be postseason games in
(01:02:13):
West Sacramento. But it will also feature the earliest opening
day in Major league history. MLB announced that schedule yesterday,
which technically opens on March twenty fifth, with the New
York Yankees at the San Francisco Giants before a fourteen
game traditional opening day on Thursday, March twenty six. That
(01:02:34):
marks the earliest opening day ever. Excluding the International one
Offs and some other special events. The final regular season
games are scheduled for September twenty seventh. Now I know
what many of you might be thinking, Gosh, it's the
baseball schedule so long, blah blah blah. You should know
that the Major League Baseball schedule regular season schedule has
(01:02:55):
definitely extended beyond September twenty seventh. In the passage en
in fact, that's gone into the first weekend in October
in many of the prior years. But because of in
recent years the expansion of the Wildcard playoffs and the
Wildcard Series and then the Divisional Series, it became necessary
to pull the front of the Major League Baseball season forward.
(01:03:19):
And to be honest, you talk a lot about a
lot of those players, they're glad of it. It's a
week less of spring training, so they don't have to
worry about that so much. Now, among the quirks of
the schedule, which in case you're keeping cown, it's two thy,
four hundred and thirty games of Major League Baseball, there
(01:03:39):
are several accommodations for the FIFA World Cup. Remember the
World Cup is going to be here next year, and
it's going to be played throughout North America and June
and July. So, for example, the Boston Red Sox and
Seattle Mariners will play a rare scheduled double header because
you know, they don't schedule doubleheaders hardly ever in Major
(01:04:00):
League Baseball anymore, but they will play a rare scheduled
doubleheader on June twentieth in deference to a World Cup
match being played the day before in Seattle. Also, the Rangers,
the Phillies, and the Royals are going to have some
unusual off days a handful of weekend dates, mainly due
(01:04:20):
to World Cup matches being played in their cities. So
I don't think I've ever seen an off day in
the regular season on a Saturday from Major League Baseball,
but that's going to happen Otherwise, the season schedule pretty
much standard rate and form. There are a lot of
three and four game series across six months of baseball.
There's a handful of notable matchups sprinkled throughout, and there's
(01:04:43):
still no official word on where the Tampa Bay Rays
will play next season. The expectation has been that they
will return to Tropicana Field after spending this season at
Steinbrennerfield because of the hurricane damage at the trip and
they Rai's first home game is scheduled for sixth against
the Chicago Cups. Now, the Athletics will return to their
(01:05:04):
temporary home in West Sacramento. The league clarified that they
will play postseason games there if necessary, but the A's
are going to play home games in Las Vegas for
one week from June eighth to the fourteenth, the A's
will host the Milwaukee Brewers and then the Colorado Rockies
at Las Vegas Ballpark that's the home of the Triple
A Las Vegas Aviators. The A's, of course, aren't scheduled
(01:05:28):
to move to Las Vegas full time until twenty twenty eight,
and the ninety six Major League All Star Game will
be played at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia on July fourteenth.
Mets and Yankees will play at Yankee Stadium on September
eleventh to mark the twenty fifth anniversary of the nine
to eleven attacks. The Mets and Yankees' last played on
(01:05:48):
September eleventh, twenty twenty one, on the twentieth anniversary. There's
other holiday and celebration matchups. The Mets at the Dodgers
for Jackie Robinson Day on April fifteenth, the Tigers at
the Red Sox for Patriots Day on April twentieth, the
Cleveland Guardians at the Yankees for Luke Garrick Day on
June second, the Mets at Toronto for Canada Day on
(01:06:09):
July first, and the Brewers at the Pirates for Roberto
Clementi Day on June fifteenth. So it's too early to
know who the defending champions will be. But it's worth
knowing that the Dodgers are going to open next season
at home against the Diamondbacks, the Brewers will be at
home against the White Sox, the Phillies will be at
home at the Rangers, the Blue Jays at home against
(01:06:29):
the Rays, and the Tigers will be on the road
at the Padres. The Dodgers and Yankees will open the
second half with a pretty fascinating matchup out of the
All Star break. So that's to let you know about
that brand new season of Major League Baseball for twenty
twenty six next season. So we'll look forward to seeing
(01:06:49):
how that all plays out as the Dodgers and the
Yankees and the Red.
Speaker 2 (01:06:55):
Sox and the Cubs.
Speaker 1 (01:06:56):
By the way, the Cubs are going to leave Wrigley
Field to play the Red Sox at Fenway Park on
the last weekend of next season as well. So that
was all released yesterday by Major League Baseball. As we know,
it is still going on, these battles for the division
and wildcard spots all right. Up next, we'll hear from
Mars Banning a long orange quarterback when we continue on
(01:07:18):
thirteen hundred, The Zone on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
The Zone.
Speaker 2 (01:07:21):
Well in the.
Speaker 1 (01:07:22):
World of perspiring arts, the Loghorns are getting ready for
their season opener on Saturday Saturday morning, eleven am. Kickoff
here on thirteen hundred The Zone, and we will begin
the countdown at with our long Orange game Day coverage
at eight am with Cameron Parker and my Cardball Heart.
(01:07:45):
So they'll bring it to you and they've got guessed
as well, and they'll examine closely this matchup. We have
the network pregame start time at ten am from Ohio
Stadium with a kickoff from the Horseshoe just past eleven o'clock.
So looking forward to bringing you that game. And there's
no doubt that a lot of long Worn fans are
looking forward to seeing Arch Manning take the field as the.
Speaker 2 (01:08:11):
Designated without question.
Speaker 1 (01:08:14):
Leader of the long Worn offense and one of the
leaders of this football team. Of course, Arch started a
couple of games last year with quinn Ewers being banged
up and out the lineup, and Art's got some other
snaps as well, but this is now his time as
the starting quarterback.
Speaker 2 (01:08:30):
It's been greatly anticipated.
Speaker 1 (01:08:33):
I've said this, there have been a lot of folks
that asked me when I've been on some programs, including
on her sister station. Was on earlier today on Sports
Talk seven ninety in Houston, and I was asked by
a good friend, Matt Thomas, the a voice of the Rockets,
about the anticipation going into this and how excited Longhorn
(01:08:56):
fans were, And I said, you know, in all the
years that I've been a part of Longhorn football, basketball,
women's basketball, baseball, broadcast, softball, broadcast, all of those and
this is my thirty eighth year on the network starting
this fall, and twenty fifth season in the play by playchair,
I cannot remember a time where there was more excitement,
(01:09:22):
more anticipation surrounding the start of a football season. Now,
some of that comes every year. There's always a great
deal of excitement because the way long run fans love
their football, and even just football fans across the state
of Texas look forward to seeing the University of Texas
on the field. But given the rise of this program
under Stark the past couple of seasons after the thirteen
(01:09:45):
and twelfth start over the first two seasons to go
twenty five and five over the past two seasons to
be the only program in college football to go to
back to back college football playoffs. These past two seasons,
they were the only one that returned to the playoff
after the twenty twenty three season. There's understandably a great
(01:10:06):
deal of excitement and build up to this football season,
and of course one of the chief components of that
will be everybody training their eyes on the guy at
number sixteen taking the snaps. For his part, Arch Banding
has really taken everything with a great deal of a
plumb and also a relaxed nature. You're going to hear
(01:10:26):
it here in his meeting with the media this week,
how he and he'll be asking this about how he's
handling everything, how he's handling the attention, how he's handling
the focus, how he's handling the responsibility, and Arch has
already response on all of this.
Speaker 2 (01:10:41):
So here it is.
Speaker 1 (01:10:42):
This was a couple of days ago with the assembled media,
and it's probably going to be this way with him
on a weekend, week out. Basis, no matter how well
he's performing, or if their struggles or if the team
is really going gangbusters, the quarterback of the University of
Texas is always going to be in the spotlight, and
(01:11:04):
it has never before been in the spotlight that the
quarterback is right now. So here are the words and
the conversation between the media and long Orang's quarterback arch Banning.
Speaker 14 (01:11:18):
What's your level of confidence in the offense right now
and based on what you all were able to accomplish
during training camp?
Speaker 11 (01:11:25):
Yeah, I feel good. I feel like we're in a
good spot. Felick.
Speaker 13 (01:11:27):
We're starting to catch a stride these pasts. You know,
a week and a half a camp and we're fired
up to finally play someone else beside their defense.
Speaker 15 (01:11:33):
Have you ever been to Columbus nder your thoughts on
the horseshoe or a plan out there?
Speaker 11 (01:11:37):
Never been.
Speaker 13 (01:11:37):
No, I never took a visit there, but I'm excited
to go. I've heard a lot about it. I heard
it's pretty intense, so I can't wait. They're a good
team too.
Speaker 16 (01:11:45):
You talked a little good before about learning from Quinn
and especially about these road games. Where were some of
the things that you saw Quinn do on the road
that you might be able to ask your reperform.
Speaker 11 (01:11:54):
Yeah, I thought Quinn did a really a job to
just stay in calm.
Speaker 13 (01:11:57):
Adversity's going to strike at one point in the game,
and he remained cool and collected, and I have high
praise for him on that.
Speaker 16 (01:12:02):
On that part, what's your how do you approach pre game? Like,
what's your iinerary? Whats ar comanding do before pas football?
Speaker 11 (01:12:09):
Yeah, it's kind of nice.
Speaker 13 (01:12:11):
We had this mock week to you're gonna kind of
get out all of your pregame routines. I'm I really
do what everyone else does. I don't wear headphones or anything.
I kind of just go by my business, get my
bros in, and uh, say a few prayers and it's
time to go.
Speaker 10 (01:12:25):
What stands out about their defense?
Speaker 13 (01:12:27):
They got really good players, They're well coached. They've got
a bunch of guys that have play a lot of football.
Caleb Downs, I can't say enough good things about him.
He's a really good player. And uh, we're gonna have
to bring our egg game.
Speaker 17 (01:12:41):
Archie b Away talking about this being something you've dreamed about,
how do you control your emotions about it?
Speaker 15 (01:12:45):
You just stays away from your drink.
Speaker 2 (01:12:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 13 (01:12:48):
I think Sark does a good job of just saying
being there with us and and be here now. So
I'm gonna focus on today Saturday will be here soon enough,
So focusing on the present right now.
Speaker 9 (01:12:56):
Sark's the offense, you know, taking the personality of mm hm.
Speaker 13 (01:13:03):
Yeah, Trade is just like the ultimate kind of energizer
the offense. He brings good juice every day and he uh,
he's a gamer, so it's a It's definitely a good
thing that we take the personality of him.
Speaker 18 (01:13:15):
What's it like to kind of have that support and
the group and.
Speaker 13 (01:13:18):
Often to dudes like that, Yeah, it's great. And even
having C four back, he's like a he thinks like
a quarterback. He's such a smart guy. So it's nice
having those two and really everyone everyone has to do
their one and eleventh And I'm fired up about our group.
Speaker 15 (01:13:30):
How much input do you have an actual game plan?
Speaker 13 (01:13:34):
It's good because Sark and I and the other position
coach is Michael monte A Jmillwy. We all have a
good back and forth on what I like and don't like.
So that's been that's been really good this year.
Speaker 15 (01:13:43):
Can you walk us through some of the details of
your preparation? Are you looking at what the weather is
with the m mob down that day? How much people
are to give him?
Speaker 13 (01:13:51):
Yeah, I think there's a lot that goes into it.
We have a full week of prep, You're looking at
every sort of situation and uh, but once it's time
to play, you gotta remember, like there's only so much
film and everything you can watch, it's time to go,
time to go rip it once you're out there.
Speaker 19 (01:14:06):
Shorts of the questions on a trial as well, how
much as it is a comfort, you know, and that
you don't have to be a one ning getting out there.
Speaker 13 (01:14:15):
Yeah, I think I always have to remind myself it's
not all about me, it's the it's the whole team.
And you know, we got to play the situation as well,
not give them short fields and and take care of
the ball.
Speaker 11 (01:14:25):
So it's gonna be a phone last.
Speaker 10 (01:14:27):
States receivers a lot of potentially going on the game.
But how would you excribe the group this week?
Speaker 13 (01:14:32):
Yeah, I think our receivers gotten better and better every practice.
Wingos continue to impress me throughout camp, demo and the
young guys too.
Speaker 11 (01:14:39):
So we're excited.
Speaker 15 (01:14:42):
At cool.
Speaker 8 (01:14:46):
There's been a lot of tips around you since you
set down to campus, but all of about word side
being able to you out there and all that.
Speaker 11 (01:14:54):
Yeah, I'm excited. I mean this is what I've been
waiting for.
Speaker 13 (01:14:56):
I spent two years not playing, so I might as
well go have some fun, right.
Speaker 10 (01:15:00):
And Arch you went post to the road En Martens.
Speaker 13 (01:15:04):
I liked how it's just kind of you verse everyone,
your team versus everyone, So it's just us out there
and you don't have to worry about anything else besides
just just playing ball.
Speaker 15 (01:15:13):
Arch, do you have a scheduled call your granddad? Just
put the huge and playing talk to me any more?
Speaker 11 (01:15:18):
I mean I call him a lot.
Speaker 13 (01:15:19):
He texted me about every day so or every day,
so yeah, I'll call him probably once or twice this week.
Speaker 15 (01:15:25):
Yeah, and they'll talk to an hero from you. That
all though, what it takes go to expect in Columbus.
Speaker 13 (01:15:30):
Yeah, here's full Personality's already on their leadership committee. He's
been a great addition for us, and he's told us
some things. But you know, we're gonna have to go
out and play our game.
Speaker 15 (01:15:38):
Arch Mission is not playing much the last year, needing
back that freshman year and being owned that chart and
not get a chance to play.
Speaker 9 (01:15:44):
And how the people that was how excited everything out
of the top tea year get everything.
Speaker 13 (01:15:49):
Yeah, I think for me it's I'm not gonna take
it for granted. I know, I know what it's like
not playing, and uh, I'm just blessed to be here
and I'm gonna make the most out of it.
Speaker 20 (01:15:58):
Coach talking a lot about you pumping in head at
crowd noise and basically if you guys focused and once
you kind of block it out, was that they're like
for you And have you enjoyed it?
Speaker 15 (01:16:07):
Just that journey?
Speaker 13 (01:16:09):
Yeah, it kind of take every challenge head on, and
I'm excited for this challenge. It's gonna be a big
one open up with the reigning champ, So what more
could you ask for?
Speaker 11 (01:16:17):
That's why you come to Texas.
Speaker 16 (01:16:18):
R When you when you're on the road and somebody
yelled something nasty to you or whatever, what does that
do to you inside?
Speaker 15 (01:16:24):
Does that far you up? Does it brush it off?
Speaker 9 (01:16:27):
Yeah?
Speaker 13 (01:16:27):
I feel like I do a good job of zoning
everything out. But if I hear it, I guess it
kind of fires me up.
Speaker 15 (01:16:32):
Do you hear it?
Speaker 11 (01:16:33):
Depends how loud they are. I guess how.
Speaker 10 (01:16:36):
Much to judges last year's lost this off.
Speaker 15 (01:16:39):
Season during like for any kind of motivation throughout that.
Speaker 13 (01:16:41):
Year, Yeah, I think naturally it's it's a motivation. That
was your last loss before the championship game and we
open with them, so it's kind of a unique situation.
Speaker 11 (01:16:48):
But yeah, definitely use that as motivation.
Speaker 15 (01:16:50):
During this week. You're a pretty homeo guy. You kind
of relaxed. How much does your brother keep you around?
Speaker 11 (01:16:56):
Yeah, a lot, definitely.
Speaker 13 (01:16:58):
I think I'm around the media and stuff, but I'm
definitely cocky to my older brother.
Speaker 11 (01:17:02):
That's my younger brother.
Speaker 13 (01:17:03):
So I got dinner with him and his buddies last night,
and uh, yeah, he's just he's hilarious, So it was fun.
Speaker 15 (01:17:10):
What is it something that he that they're keeping rout it?
Speaker 11 (01:17:14):
I don't know.
Speaker 13 (01:17:14):
I can't think of an example right now, but he's
always kind of giving me some crap, So it's a
it's a good relationship we have. On Glady's here, he's
going on the game.
Speaker 2 (01:17:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 11 (01:17:23):
He said he's gonna tear up Plumbus Friday night.
Speaker 13 (01:17:27):
Yeah.
Speaker 11 (01:17:27):
Yeah, he's funny.
Speaker 16 (01:17:28):
Are you mentally compared to have that huge X on
your back all season all where everybody is going to
be coming for you.
Speaker 13 (01:17:35):
I mean, I think that's all of us at Texas,
and I think we kind of try to shift the narrative.
We're going for everyone else targets not on our beat.
We have a red dot on everyone else.
Speaker 10 (01:17:44):
What on the offensive line?
Speaker 14 (01:17:47):
You know, some of the guys who are coming out
maybe not projected in the starting lineup, but the depth.
Speaker 10 (01:17:52):
Can you give us a couple of names that have
stood out?
Speaker 13 (01:17:54):
Yeah, I think Connor Strow comes to mind. He's had
a really good camp. Really really proud of him. Jade Chapman,
those guys who I came in with, I'm just really
proud of the way they progressed and continue to get
better every day. Brandon Baker bred Baker's stuff. He's a
He's a disciplined dude. Now he's always in the building,
really hard worker and a really good guy.
Speaker 20 (01:18:14):
I think it's safe to say, like most of the
media or you know, if you're not just the guy
here in Texas, but you want to be premier guy
in all of college football, how much do you look
forwards like as goodness first game behind you so that.
Speaker 15 (01:18:25):
People can just kind of stop the chatting and to
see what you're about.
Speaker 13 (01:18:27):
Yeah, I'm just ready to play. I don't look at
any of the media. If I see someone on have
a private Instagram account. If I see someone, I click
not interested. So yeah, so yeah, I'm just ready to play.
Speaker 10 (01:18:44):
What's your relationship like with Matthew Call?
Speaker 11 (01:18:46):
It's good, it's good.
Speaker 13 (01:18:47):
Uh, He's He's been a great addition to the team
and the quarterback room seems like everyone likes some of
her team. It's nice having him and an older guy
in the room. He's been around a lot of football
and and just a really good dude and a good player.
Speaker 15 (01:18:58):
He all finshed the line and you get four you
starters back. How do you feel like to progress?
Speaker 13 (01:19:03):
Yeah, I thought they've gotten better and better every week.
We're kind of gelling as a group right now. So
I'm excited. We're excited to go play a talented group
in Ohio state.
Speaker 16 (01:19:12):
Or what's your process for for watching the film where
you sitting down with a snack on a notebook or what?
Speaker 13 (01:19:18):
I like to do everything at the facility because when
I go home, I want to be away from football
as much as I can, even though my roommates always
want to talk and watch football. But uh, yeah, I
do everything at facility, and each day is kind of
a different like Mondays, you know, based down Tuesdays, start
getting the third down Wednesday red area, So it's just
kind of a different thing every day.
Speaker 18 (01:19:39):
You start started Tominga would playing the night before the
game and talking about the script and how he's doing,
how Doll's relationship going. Have to that point where you
haven't had a conversation every weekend.
Speaker 15 (01:19:49):
What has that been like to kind of go in
that relationship with you?
Speaker 13 (01:19:52):
Sorry, Yeah, it's cool, and I think selfishly it's cool
having an offensive head coach who also calls the plays
and just being able to speak the same language and
see what each other is thinking. It's it's definitely an advantage.
Speaker 11 (01:20:04):
I think.
Speaker 15 (01:20:04):
Have you heard from Queen or any of your teammates
last year?
Speaker 11 (01:20:07):
Yeah, I've kept up with a bunch of them.
Speaker 13 (01:20:09):
I'm boy Gunner Helm's balling, so it's cool seeing him
and keeping up with those guys. Talked to Joda last week,
so I'm excited for all of them.
Speaker 15 (01:20:16):
Any advice they've giving you, yeah, they just.
Speaker 13 (01:20:18):
Said, you know, enjoy all of it, goes by quick,
and be ready for the moment.
Speaker 2 (01:20:24):
So there they are.
Speaker 1 (01:20:24):
The low key, laidback, affable responses from the Longhorns quarterback
arch manning the red shirt sophomore. All right, coming up,
we'll shift to hear from a young man from the
Greater Austin area, in fact, right out of west Lake High.
But he is a leader on that defensive front for Texas.
(01:20:45):
The conversation with the media and Ethan Burke is on
decks that'll be coming up next here on this Wednesday afternoon.
They got rock Wednesday here on AM thirteen under the zone.
I should get used to the big time nature of
college football opening with big time opponents.
Speaker 2 (01:21:01):
Think about it.
Speaker 1 (01:21:01):
Texas plays Ohio State in the opener this year, they
have Ohio State at home next year, then they have
Michigan at home the return game for last year's and
Arbor matchup the following year in twenty twenty seven. In
twenty twenty eight and twenty twenty nine, they have a
home and home of Notre Dame scheduled, and then they're
supposed to play Arizona State in a couple of years
after that. So yeah, I get used to some of
(01:21:22):
these big time matchups in non conference play. Ethan Burke
has seen a lot of it, and the senior jack
end out of Westlake High really stepped up his game
last year and is now ready for his final goal
around as a long one as he visited with the
local medium.
Speaker 15 (01:21:39):
Watched the Ohio State things finish.
Speaker 17 (01:21:42):
Yeah, I mean it's all over the place right now,
you know, highlights and then I've gone on YouTube a
few times. You know, it's tough to like relive moments
like that, but you got to accept it and move on.
And right now, that's what we got, you know, a
revenge games. So head down there and play our best ball.
Speaker 10 (01:21:58):
Yeah, what's the confidence level this defense?
Speaker 17 (01:22:01):
Obviously a ton of returners who have produced all over
the field. I think we're We're strong, we fly to
the ball. It's gonna We're a sturdy defense.
Speaker 9 (01:22:11):
We know that.
Speaker 17 (01:22:14):
So I think just just playing is one and and
being confident, I think which we will be.
Speaker 9 (01:22:19):
And I think we'll see it Saturday. I think it'll
be fun to watch the defense.
Speaker 19 (01:22:23):
Good running game, travels road, Yes against And you guys
also wanted Alabama company, Yeah, Michigan on that defense and
in that room, imposing of those conversations to try to
set the tone that especially when you have a first
or story quarterback.
Speaker 17 (01:22:40):
Definitely, you know for him, it's a huge game. First game,
so and we're very experienced. So going on the road,
I think it starts with defense, right, you know, having
that that nasty mentality, and I think we're gonna we're
gonna bring that as as we always do. And we
have shown on the road, you know, first with Alabama
a few years ago, and then Michigan and then.
Speaker 9 (01:23:00):
Just the large amount of road winds we've had, I
think eleven in three years or so.
Speaker 7 (01:23:05):
Do you like playing on the road.
Speaker 11 (01:23:06):
I do. I like getting booed, you know.
Speaker 9 (01:23:10):
I think it's it's makes it makes it a little fun.
Speaker 17 (01:23:12):
Obviously I love playing at home, but on the road,
it's just some lights.
Speaker 9 (01:23:16):
You know, it's a good time.
Speaker 20 (01:23:17):
You've been the key for you guys on the road,
especially in those big games, like you're talking about the
Battle of the Michigan what.
Speaker 17 (01:23:22):
Was kind of the big Yeah, And I think we
we kind of talked about it this morning with sark
as a team. Just it starts with defense, right, and
then establishing our run game and just like our dominance, right,
and our physicality and and wanting it more in that
in that starts with the defense and honestly the run game,
just showing who's more physical in the trenches.
Speaker 10 (01:23:42):
Really would you use your house and game last year's motivation.
Speaker 17 (01:23:46):
Is awesome personally, Yes, me personally obviously, because I've reached
that point now twice in my career and just we
haven't been able to get over over that step.
Speaker 9 (01:23:55):
And and right now.
Speaker 17 (01:23:58):
Obviously this is all all I'm thinking about was the
hot ste game this week, nothing in the future, just
game by game, and I think last year we kind
of didn't do that enough, just taking it one step
at a time.
Speaker 9 (01:24:08):
So right now we're just all dialed in on a
house state and nothing else.
Speaker 15 (01:24:11):
Did you happen to see.
Speaker 10 (01:24:12):
The post of the house state? People haven't gone laying
on the ground your house?
Speaker 20 (01:24:17):
I did not?
Speaker 11 (01:24:17):
Is that is that in there?
Speaker 9 (01:24:21):
Okay?
Speaker 17 (01:24:22):
Yeah, if someone wants to send it to me, all
I'd love to see it.
Speaker 9 (01:24:25):
It's not necessarily in your position.
Speaker 15 (01:24:27):
Group, But what do you tell us about Hero?
Speaker 7 (01:24:28):
And has he told you anything.
Speaker 9 (01:24:29):
About it on our state?
Speaker 15 (01:24:30):
And you have to calm this crowd.
Speaker 9 (01:24:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 17 (01:24:33):
Now, I'm working really close with Hero on the daily,
talking to him, just trying to scheme it up. And
he obviously has a has a close relationship with those
offensive linemen, so just getting details from him and and
really right now, we were not like one hundred on
what to expect. You know, they've shifted things around, they
got new alignment, they got a few returners. But I
(01:24:55):
think for for us, just when I'm working with Hero
being dialed on what we gotta.
Speaker 10 (01:24:59):
Do, right, kind of player is here?
Speaker 17 (01:25:01):
Hero is just I think he's very well rounded. You know,
he can play a two I, he can pass rush,
he can play in the run.
Speaker 11 (01:25:07):
He's really good at a lot of things.
Speaker 7 (01:25:08):
You know I've talked.
Speaker 18 (01:25:09):
About, you know, as a team that's like an excell
note back to y'all trying to turn that target to
a red dot.
Speaker 10 (01:25:14):
Yeah, so you kind of under that high school webway.
Speaker 18 (01:25:17):
How do you kind of change that mentality for the
overall group to know that we're not just get us?
Speaker 9 (01:25:21):
Well, yeah, totally.
Speaker 17 (01:25:23):
We know it's it's a big game when everyone plays us,
but if it's a big game for them, it needs
to be a huge Every game is huge for us, right, Like,
obviously Ohio State's going to be more talked about, but
next week is the week after San Jose has got it.
We got the same mentalities we had this week, every day,
every practice, right.
Speaker 15 (01:25:41):
Kind of tricks you want to consider.
Speaker 17 (01:25:45):
Yeah, well, obviously he was really close with that program,
and and having Coach Clark around has just been awesome.
And the other Ahose State guys on the staff currently,
but Coach Clark specifically, just really getting us dialed in
the edge room little details and and helping us out
on our pass rush and just everything has been He's
been a great addition.
Speaker 9 (01:26:06):
I've said that before. I mean that's for us, right.
Speaker 10 (01:26:11):
What do you see him from bossic?
Speaker 17 (01:26:13):
Yeah, I mean obviously Vasik just strong, gritty player, really
really really athletic and can handle himself on the run
and also mix it up in the past downs inside
or outside. Just I hope he plays with confidence and
and and dominates.
Speaker 15 (01:26:30):
Playing at Michigan to help you guys.
Speaker 17 (01:26:32):
At all in the environment, I would say so that
that stadium. I love playing there, Like like someone asked earlier,
playing on the road that one, I was really really
pumped up for the fans. You know what is one
hundred thousand. They don't have suites there, Everyone's there getting rowdy.
So I love that, and I expect the same at
(01:26:52):
Ohio State. And I think it'll be really really fun
game to watch and participate in the practice.
Speaker 11 (01:26:59):
Yeah, yeah, I mean it's it's loud.
Speaker 17 (01:27:01):
Sometimes I'm like, damn, like this is give me a headache,
you know, but but.
Speaker 9 (01:27:05):
We got to get used to it.
Speaker 11 (01:27:05):
We got practice.
Speaker 17 (01:27:06):
We have so many young guys who just haven't even
played in a in a big environment. They're from smaller
high schools. They don't know what to expect. So for us,
I think we got to get dialed in on that.
And it's a huge emphasis every week, especially going into
an Ohio State or a Michigan or whatever's.
Speaker 10 (01:27:21):
What's the step you want to take this ship. It's
like where do you want to get your dame better?
Speaker 9 (01:27:25):
And what's for me? Just being consistent? And then I
think I've.
Speaker 17 (01:27:30):
Had physical plays, but I want to be physically dominant
every play.
Speaker 11 (01:27:34):
And it started earlier this year, you know.
Speaker 9 (01:27:36):
As soon as we lost that.
Speaker 17 (01:27:38):
That first game, or not first, that Ohio State game,
right started, the off season started and I had to
work on my nutrition and get stronger, and it's it
started since then.
Speaker 9 (01:27:47):
So I just want to play the best of my abilities.
Speaker 14 (01:27:49):
What's you're talking about the interior guys, I mean said
they're almost interchangeable.
Speaker 10 (01:27:57):
Yeah, how would you characterize it?
Speaker 17 (01:28:00):
I would say that in a good way. Is they
can all play all across the front. You know, we
obviously have a few guys who we specifically want playing
No's whatever, but for the most part, everyone can go
tackle the big end, play like a five technique, and
everyone's so versatile.
Speaker 9 (01:28:17):
Like like Hero. You know, like I said, so there's
so much depth.
Speaker 11 (01:28:21):
In that room. I really like Marod, you know, so
many guys.
Speaker 17 (01:28:26):
It's it's a really talented room, and it's fun just
like you know, talking ball with those guys and figuring
out scheming up.
Speaker 15 (01:28:32):
You know.
Speaker 18 (01:28:33):
I last time I talked to you, you mentioned how
you were just trying to go to communication, you know,
new guys, and now to this.
Speaker 17 (01:28:38):
Point, how yeah, I mean, it's it's excellent. At this point,
everyone's talking all all the time. You know, we're talking
with the linebackers, they're giving us calls and the communication
has really been.
Speaker 9 (01:28:49):
Really like perfect pretty much.
Speaker 14 (01:28:51):
How hungry are they because Hero obviously came from a
top program.
Speaker 10 (01:28:55):
Yeah, Cobra bar you know, Rode hungry, Lemon Johnson.
Speaker 17 (01:29:01):
Yeah, they're they're all really really hungry. And and Levon
Levon is he's he's had a really good last week
i'd say, and Maraud is hungry. He's Marod's a sophomore,
I believe, and he had an awesome freshman year and
he's but he didn't play at this SEC level, so
he's hungry.
Speaker 9 (01:29:20):
He's ready to show that he can do it at
any level.
Speaker 8 (01:29:22):
Right.
Speaker 17 (01:29:22):
And and Hero obviously left Ohio State. I don't think
anyone's more hungry than Hero. Honestly, I don't know. I
don't Probably those things are weird. You know, he left,
who knows if they even send him one.
Speaker 7 (01:29:35):
Honestly, what advice are you wanted? What advice are you
giving to these younger guys?
Speaker 10 (01:29:39):
How are you preparing them for this thing? First game?
Speaker 17 (01:29:42):
Yeah, for the young guys, like let's say Lance, just
trying to make sure he stays calm and just telling everyone, like,
let's play fast, right, if get the play call, be confident.
Speaker 11 (01:29:53):
In your ability and go.
Speaker 17 (01:29:54):
You know, the worst thing you could do is hesitate
and and play slow. And like, once you get those
first few two or three plays in, everything will be smooth.
Speaker 15 (01:30:03):
You will have more sex and colin.
Speaker 9 (01:30:05):
This year, we'll just have to see. He's really talented.
Speaker 1 (01:30:09):
So we've heard from the offensive side and the defensive
side of the football today, with Arch panning this hour
as well as Ethan Burke. All right, we'll be back
to wrap up today's edition of the program, coming up
here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
