Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right here on the Thursday afternoon updating Astar's Blue Jays.
Kevin Gosman's working on a complete game shutout. He does
have a runner at first with one out. Astar's batting
in the top of the ninth and Toronto up six
to nothing, so we'll keep you updated on that. We

(00:21):
had a chance to visit with Babel Offenburg last hour,
and if you missed a great conversation, you can go
back and you check it out on our podcast page
at AM thirteen under The Zone dot com. And we'll
get to some of the other stuff with regard to
the meaning for Babe and the game and all that

(00:41):
kind of stuff. But we wanted to visit with my
broadcast partner in long worn football sports director at k
x A N And of course we'll be calling the
action tonight when on KBBO, when it's going to be
Hayes and Hendrickson over at the field in Flugerville. Roger
Wallas joins me right now on hotline. Are are you

(01:02):
headed over to the field yet?

Speaker 2 (01:04):
I apologize, I look like I'm in the witness protection program.
I had a light last week and I forgot to
turn it on.

Speaker 3 (01:12):
So no, no, no, we're all good.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
Well, I've heard the traffic report and that was something
to look forward to, and I had up thirty five
trying to get to the field.

Speaker 4 (01:21):
So yeah, I'll be on my way in a few minutes.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
Okay, all right, first this this matchup, it's interesting. They
both played competitive non district schedules at this point, Hendrickson's
one and one, Hayes's two and oh. And they had
that crazy comfort behind win against Plugerville last week, so
it's back to back trips for them to the field
off of that. But what's your what's your take on

(01:45):
this Hayes team early on that's out to a two
and oh start this season.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
It was interesting talking with their coach, Mark Torres, because
he he kind of set the scene a little bit
different than maybe we thought. He said, you know, we
struggled against Fluckerville, we had the big comeback, got some
breaks along the way, whereas you know, Hendrickson cruised in
their shutout win over Leanders. So he's he said, you know,

(02:10):
they should probably be feeling pretty good, and you know,
I'm not sure how you guys are feeling.

Speaker 4 (02:14):
I kind of look at it the other way.

Speaker 2 (02:16):
Hey, you guys found a way to win in a
competitive ball game, a close game, fourth quarter game. Whereas
Henderson comes into this one, he wasn't terribly competitive. So
you know, Hayes might be a little more battle tested
coming off a week two. But you know everything changes
now with this being the district opener as well tonight.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
Yeah, and it was a tough loss for Hendricks in
the week one of the Belton So I mean, like
we said, competitive ball games and that sort of thing.
All right, So here's here's the Here was the hook
tall of this. We talked about it with baby Laffenburg
about him losing his son Luke and to cancer back
in twenty nineteen, and it started with Dana Demmel, the
head coach, saying, we're not going to retire Luke Lathenberg's

(02:58):
jersey number. No, We're going to have somebody wear the jersey,
kind of almost like that twelfth Man type thing where
somebody wears the twel twelfth Man jersey, but somebody will
wear the number two jersey in his honor. And the
thing that just absolutely makes it stand alone from others
is whoever wears the jersey wears it with the name

(03:20):
Loffenberg on the back of the Jersey, which is absolutely
just thunderstruck me when I read about this, and then
it come to find out, of course, the kid who's
wearing is a red shirt freshman from El Paso out
of Pebble Hills, Marcus Torres, whose dad happened to be
his head coach in a high school at Pebble Hills
and now is entering his second year as head coach

(03:43):
of the Hayes Hawks, Mark Torres, and I imagine he's
a pretty proud dad about all that.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
Yeah, that's a pretty good, pretty cool connection. And honestly,
you and I were talking yesterday. I didn't put it
together until I was working on my Texas UTEP stuff
for our game on Saturday. I spoke with Mark in
the morning on Tuesday, and he didn't offer it up.
And then I saw Marcus Torres Pebble Hills. Okay, that's

(04:09):
not that's not a coincidence, but yeah, that is. That
is so cool and how cool it is for Mark
in year two as the head coach at Hayes to
have his son come up here and play. And since
they play on Thursday, Saturday is usually a little bit
more open for high school coaches than it would be
on a Friday. So very cool that that he'll, you know,

(04:30):
no doubt get to see his son play at Royal
Texas Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

Speaker 1 (04:35):
Well, and as you saw Roger, he's not just listed
as a roster dude who was handed a scholarship. He's
he is on the depth chart, on the too deep
as a slot receiver. And Babe was telling me that
last Saturday night, and then winter you team Martin Malachai.
Nelson tried to throw a pass later in the game
and he said he just missed him on the target.

(04:55):
And Nelson apologized to Torres and said, hey, I'm sorry
I couldn't get your first collegiate catch, and Tourist's response
was to say, hey, maybe I'll get one in Austin
next week. So your babe was it was my quarterback
at IU back in the day for one season. Wow.

Speaker 3 (05:14):
Okay, okay, well we.

Speaker 2 (05:15):
Were talking connection. I got the Babe Laffenberg connection.

Speaker 3 (05:19):
Well, here's the other connection.

Speaker 1 (05:21):
I asked him if, I said, I said, this is
not intended to make you feel more aged, but I said,
did your career overlap? Because he was from about Arch
and he said, I'm really looking forward to watching Arch play,
and I said, not to make you feel any older,
but did your career at any way overlap with Arch's grandfather?

Speaker 3 (05:43):
And he answers yes, by like about a year.

Speaker 1 (05:46):
About a year Arch in the twilight of his career
and Babe just starting out at his career, So there
was there was a little bit of there was a
little bit of overlap there. Let's talk about this game
on Saturday as well. And what we heard Sark say
today and what he said when we were recording Longhorn weekly.
A lot of the same themes echoing as going in

(06:07):
the last week in that he wants to play a
lot of guys and he wants to see this different
than week one. He really wants to see a lot
of cleanup in the penalty area with the twelve in
fractions for over one hundred yards.

Speaker 4 (06:22):
Yeah, I thought it was interesting.

Speaker 2 (06:23):
And your guy hard ball Harge will call him leather
Haarge for this question with start today. But he talked about,
you know, keeping things clean and what do you like
from the sides of the ball so far in week three. Now,
he was interesting because he didn't sugarcoat offense needs to

(06:45):
clean things up.

Speaker 4 (06:46):
They need to be more consistent. They like the big plays.

Speaker 2 (06:49):
Obviously, the defense is a lead, he said, kind of
incomplete on special teams because they haven't had that money opportunities.

Speaker 4 (06:55):
The other thing he said is he didn't.

Speaker 2 (06:56):
Back down from hey, human nature is you guys are
forty point five.

Speaker 4 (07:00):
How do you keep him engaged in practice?

Speaker 2 (07:02):
And he talked about, you know, the scout team and
how how good of a job they did giving this
team good looks, and so he doesn't dodge that stuff
that everyone's thinking, you're in this middle of a three
game homestand where you're gonna be a seemingly a heavier
favorite than next week from the previous week, and that'll
probably include next week, but I think they can still

(07:23):
get a lot out of it as well. And I
spoke to him for our pregame show on Saturday on
Game Day about Arch and you know, Arch did this
last year. He did two as the starter and never
did three as the starter. So this is his third
game starting, and he just likes the fact that he's
getting a better command of the offense and more importantly,
maybe the leadership aspect and making sure he includes everybody

(07:45):
in getting this offense on track as well.

Speaker 1 (07:48):
Kind of curious to see what he does with the
running backs. I think we're all obviously expecting to see
a pretty good dose of CJ. Baxter as as it's
getting up and then and then obviously he wants.

Speaker 3 (08:01):
To continue to mix.

Speaker 1 (08:03):
In other guys, and that would be obviously Christian Clark.
He's been very up from what he said about Jarrett Gibson,
and I know everybody remembers the fumbles last year and
then the fumble.

Speaker 3 (08:15):
Last week and then the other thing.

Speaker 1 (08:18):
This is something he said to me last night as well,
and he said it this morning on the Zoom. I
think we're gonna get to see that freshman from Shreeport,
James Simon, on the field on Saturday.

Speaker 2 (08:28):
Yeah, and the Gibs of things interesting because he feels
terrible for him, but that doesn't change the way he
feels about if you put it on the ground, that's
going to hurt your chances of being in the rotation.

Speaker 4 (08:41):
Now.

Speaker 2 (08:42):
I think he'll get a chance on Saturday, But yeah,
to see one of the freshman. Stewart's a little bit
banged up, he didn't dress last week in their game
against San Jose State, but Simon's a guy that's been
getting a lot of reps in practice, and I'm interesting
what Christian Clark does Game two, Game one, you finally
get out there, you get a chance.

Speaker 4 (09:01):
He busted off a thirteen yard run.

Speaker 2 (09:03):
Now we just do we see him a little bit
more free and easy on Saturday as well.

Speaker 4 (09:08):
And to me, Craig also the other thing the tight ends.

Speaker 2 (09:10):
I mean, they're just running tight ends out there, deep
into the depth chart and they all look pretty good.

Speaker 3 (09:16):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (09:17):
I was about to get to that and say, it's
another thing that's really fascinating. We all heard and knew
about Jack Andreys coming in and he's lived up to
the building so far with what he's done with the
six catches and two touchdowns. But to see Spencer, Shannon,
Jordan Washington, Nick Townsend all rotating, really, I mean we
were keeping the spot or Andy way hopping last Saturday.

(09:38):
Everyone have motioning tight ends in out, in, out and out.
That can be nothing but good if you're developing that
depth with guys who obviously they have different ones out
there in different blocking situations, but they've all proven they
can catch the ball as well.

Speaker 4 (09:53):
And that's the part we see him catching.

Speaker 2 (09:55):
We go, oh, there's another tight end involved, but sometimes
we don't watch as closely what they're doing in the
run game, like Jeff Banks is doing, Kyle Flood's doing,
and Coach Stark's doing. So yeah, that separates. Amaro Watson
caught a ball and I thought one of one of
Arch's better plays when he you know, got out of
the pocket and he had to move around a little
bit and dumped it down to him on the sideline.

(10:15):
So yeah, a lot of different guys are seeing time
at tight end, and and I think.

Speaker 4 (10:20):
We're gonna see more receivers this week.

Speaker 2 (10:23):
DeAndre Moore sounds like he's not gonna go still waiting
on Emmitt Mosley. So Dylan McCutcheon's going to get more chances,
Kalik Lockett who made the catch on Saturday, and is
this a time where we see Jamie French maybe.

Speaker 4 (10:35):
Make his debut as well at receiver.

Speaker 1 (10:37):
And an Aaron Butler whom was talking to you last week. Yeah,
and even Ryan Niblett perhaps in the patterns as well.
Those guys and all of that gets to the next
thing I was going to ask, and this was special teams.

Speaker 3 (10:50):
Uh, this is this kind of slowly emerged.

Speaker 1 (10:53):
I think coming out of camp, and now folks seem
to be pretty fascinated with it. Is that all three
of those guys in the kicking game, the place kicker
Mason Shipley, the punter and holder Jack bow Measter, and
the snapper Lance Saint Louis, they're all married guys, and
they're all looked at as being old guys in college

(11:15):
football parlance.

Speaker 3 (11:16):
I guess they are.

Speaker 1 (11:17):
Bon Mester's twenty six, So all of that. But that's
another interesting theme of this football team.

Speaker 2 (11:23):
Yeah, Will Stone, of course we know him from his
days in Regency in Austin, so he's the young of.

Speaker 3 (11:28):
The he's the puppy of the group.

Speaker 4 (11:30):
Yeah, yeah, exactly.

Speaker 2 (11:31):
But Bomester had his moment in game one when nas
to do as much last week. Then obviously Shipley was
good to see him bang that forty seven yarder in,
and then you know, Stone continues to kick unreturnable kickoffs.

Speaker 4 (11:45):
So right now, it's pretty good formula.

Speaker 1 (11:48):
Visiting with Roger Wallace here for a few more minutes
here on thirteen hundreds, and Roger, let me ask you
with regard to defense, we mentioned Grayson Littleton was probably
the name that leaked off the page after the first game.

Speaker 3 (12:00):
I see that. And then in addition to that, I
think the.

Speaker 1 (12:04):
Two guys who have stood out and start mentioned one
of them yesterday is would be Marod Watson and colber
Bard in the middle of that defensive front, and Hero
Canoe is also hopped in there. And we've seen Travis
Shaw get in their lance, Jackson off the end, Mosulou
off the him. We're seeing a pretty regular rotation of guys,
even with Alex January still out.

Speaker 4 (12:27):
Yeah, and Watson is a guy that they got him
for a while.

Speaker 2 (12:31):
If they can hold on to him, you just one
year at Syracuse, so I think they like the fact
that they can develop him as well. But that was
obviously the question with all the new interior defensive linemen.
I think one time Craig at least one or two snaps.
They had four basically edges on their front floor last week,
and I think that's the other part of this defense
are so flexible and in this day and age of

(12:53):
the way you play defense, you can put those edge guys.
Ethan Burt can move inside and some of the other
guys can move inside. Tray More can drop down to
a defensive end. So a lot of difficulty. The guy
that jumped out at me also was ty Anthony Smith
because of exactly what you ran. That SoundBite was sark
about and that was the force fumble he made.

Speaker 4 (13:12):
He made the.

Speaker 2 (13:13):
Tackle, there was no chance that ball carry was going
to get away, and then he ripped the ball out.

Speaker 4 (13:19):
With some help from Michael taff And so to Anthony Smith.

Speaker 2 (13:22):
I think is a lot of people think he's going
to have a breakout year, as well as Jelani McDonald
who got the hand on.

Speaker 4 (13:28):
The ball that Jaylen Gilbot was able to get the interception.

Speaker 2 (13:31):
I think Colin simm is gonna be fine, but I
think everyone wants to see him make some more plays
and make fewer mistakes.

Speaker 1 (13:38):
Yeah, yeah, I think you're right about that, and some
of that goes to the expectation of him. I also
found it interesting and this is uplifting for folks to
see leangel of foul all over the field against Ohio
State and everything he did, and then the linebacker everybody
was talking about coming out of the game as the
guy you just mentioned, ty Anthony Smith, and then through
it all there's Anthony Hill. You're still getting his hand in,

(14:01):
still punching out a ball still being a factor or
two forced fumbles early on, even though we've been talking
about Lafal and Smith here these two weeks.

Speaker 2 (14:12):
Yeah, I mean this defense they made Ohio State. It
was difficult for Ohio State to move the ball. Obviously,
it was difficult for San Jose State. They had one
one drive. But yeah, the defenses I think is going
to be really good and they'll get tested again a
little bit different way with Malachi Nelson on Saturday. But
I mean we're rattling off with a lot of names

(14:33):
that have already made plays and we know are going
to make a lot more plays.

Speaker 4 (14:37):
We haven't even mentioned Milinke Muhammad. I think he's been off.

Speaker 2 (14:40):
To a really really fast start as well.

Speaker 4 (14:42):
At one quarterback.

Speaker 2 (14:43):
I thought Gilbot would have a big year, and I
still think that he got the pick on Saturday as well.
But he can come down and he can be a
factor in the run game as well.

Speaker 1 (14:52):
Yeah, before I let you go, I want to give
you a chance to tell folks, because you guys are
staying some bus. We talked a little bit about it
last week at the Game to Night on kbv O.
Now tomorrow night, if I'm you correct me, where if
I go off the rails here that that huge westlake
an a task to see the game. Folks can watch
that streaming on KX and Plus correct.

Speaker 2 (15:13):
Yeah, and ks and dot com. You can watch it
on Plus. You can watch it online. Plus is the
free app. And then also, as I mentioned last week,
will archive our Thursday game on kbb O tonight and
then that'll be available on Plus as well. So it's
a nice way to give people another option of watching.

Speaker 1 (15:32):
And then and then the the pregame show on Saturday.
I mean, that's that's been extremely big. And I would
imagine on the home games there along Bevo Boulevard, the
guys with the game day show or are even busier
than normal.

Speaker 2 (15:48):
Yeah, that's I thought it went really well last week.
Ar Noah gross part of that one. Now, Noah's a
little erkd at Jeremy Hills last week because the celebrity
chef brought food to this set a game day. Except
he'll just grabbed the plate and you just started, you
just started.

Speaker 4 (16:05):
Going at it. And if anybody knows Noah, he's a
connoisseur of food. I think I think he was ready
to throw down with Jeremy. You know.

Speaker 1 (16:13):
Uh, my broadcast partner on long worn men's basketball. Eddie
Orn refers to Cameron Parker, who's our engineer road producer
as on the All Knight and Fork team. And I
would say that Noah and Levon Whittaker are on the
All Knife and Fork media team.

Speaker 3 (16:31):
Would it would that? Would that be accurate?

Speaker 2 (16:33):
They know what food is served where at events. Let's
just leave it at that.

Speaker 1 (16:40):
Okay, I love those guys. Hey, save travels up there
to Flugerville.

Speaker 3 (16:44):
Have a good call. We'll be watching tonight.

Speaker 4 (16:46):
All right, we'll see you Saturday.

Speaker 3 (16:47):
Thanks Craig, you bet all right? That's Roger Wallace.

Speaker 1 (16:50):
Okay, actually day, great guys, Uh, Noah and uh and
Levon as well. But if the food is out, they're
gonna partake like a like a lot of folks. You
would do it as well if you're over at press conferences,
would't you?

Speaker 4 (17:03):
Hey?

Speaker 3 (17:03):
What in Rome? Yeah? How about that game tonight? I
got a prediction for you. Let's hear it. I like
the Hawks. I see what you did there?

Speaker 1 (17:11):
Okay, yeah, it's the computer says it'll be the Hawks
from Hendrickson. The computer likes Hendrickson by three. But I
think this thing could go to war. They picked a
good one. I think they really picked a good game
to have as their KBVO Big Game of the Week.
And again, folks can watch that tonight on KBVO and

(17:33):
then tomorrow that big non district matchup over off the
northeast side of the Greater Houston area Westlake at a
Taska Sita. Folks can watch that on either the streaming
platform k XAM plus you watch that for free, or
you can watch it on kx dot com. So those

(17:55):
options are available to you as well. I love this
where you can see lots of different high school football games.
Our our victory Plus telecast tomorrow will be long View
and South Oak Cliff. Now is your broadcast is it
just is this streaming audio only or is there video
component to you being the new voice of the bass
Drop Bears. Yeah, there'll be a video component as well,

(18:16):
and get broadcast on VIPE and it will feature the
bass Drop Bears and the p c A Lions pc A.

Speaker 3 (18:23):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (18:23):
No one says that, no, no, no, no, yeah, you
could do that for Short's Christian Academy.

Speaker 3 (18:29):
Yeah yeah, but you know it's you can Shorten big touchdown.
You got a I like it. I like it a
lot of talent on. Yeah, it makes sense, all right.

Speaker 1 (18:38):
Coming up, we're going to hear more from Long Worn's
head coach Steve Sarkisian when we continue on thirteen under
the Zone
