Speaker 1 (00:08):
Good Tuesday afternoon.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
So you welcome to the program here on a Texan
Tuesday on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred zone. You know,
coming off Texas over oh you weekend. If you're a Texan,
add it to long Corn Victory, Texan Tuesday just feels
a little bit better.

Speaker 1 (00:26):
So that's good.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
My name is Craig Wait. Glad to have you with us.
Appreciate you joining the program this afternoon. We come away
each and every weekday afternoon two to five Monday through Friday.
We of course includes the producer Jay Carmon. You'll forgive
him if he sounds a little bit down in the
mouth today. After all, his favorite football team. Remember he

(00:50):
grew up in the Washington, DC area, so he's a
Commanders fan, and they invented a pretty unique way to
lose the football game in Chicago Bears. Like I was
watching obviously then see s Game one Dodgers and Brewers,
but I was flipping over frequently. So every time I
flipped over, the Commanders were doing well. And all of
a sudden, when I it was at the uh real

(01:10):
critical juncture in the ninth inning of the Dodgers game
against Milwaukee, and when it ended I flipped over and
there's the there are the Bears lining up to try
game winning field goal. I was rather surprised.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
I mean, three fumbles on the plus side of the field,
a missed field goal, all sorts of drive extending penalties.
It was Uh, it was a comedy of errors. They
even they even Craig had just just an iconic coaching
sequence from Dan Quinn. Yeah, there was a one yard

(01:44):
catch that what really wasn't a catch?

Speaker 2 (01:47):
The ball hit the ground.

Speaker 3 (01:48):
Okay, late in the half, first half, the commanders decided
to challenge it. Why you ask, I don't know. I
mean half yards?

Speaker 1 (01:57):
Was it pretty obvious that it?

Speaker 3 (02:00):
You know, I think they won the challenge. Okay, there
was a world where they wouldn't have won it. But then,
you know, the review took three or four minutes. I
guess it wasn't that obvious coming out of that timeout.
Defense is disorder. Coming out of that review, timeout, defense
is disorganized. Oh, let's brought a time out? Uh, come on,
it was. It was just sloppy. You don't you don't

(02:21):
win close games as what looks to be a bubble
type playoff team while playing sloppy football. And you know,
with the schedule being a second place schedule for the Commanders,
it's not as easy as last year. You're gonna want
to win your home games against bubble teams that that
loss is going to hurt if they don't beat Dallas
this week.

Speaker 1 (02:41):
So let me see if I got this straight.

Speaker 2 (02:43):
You have and I'm not saying this is exclusively to
one person, but uh, would it be safe to say
you have your complaints about the Commander's head coach.

Speaker 3 (02:53):
I have a couple complaints about his game management. From
a philosophy standpoint, From an intangible standpoint, I'm fully behind
dan Quinn. I don't think he's managed games well this
year in a small sample size. Interesting, there's lots of
debatable timeout use and just general sloppiness that's crept into

(03:13):
their play.

Speaker 2 (03:14):
Well, speaking of sloppiness, we're gonna hear from the Cowboys today.
We'll be nice. We'll hear from Brian Shott, number, We'll
hear from Jerry Jones because he even though he didn't
do his little post game gathering like he does like
in the tunnel or outside the locker room or whatever
following each and every Cowboys game, he did do his

(03:35):
weekly radio appearance have been Dallas and we have audio
from that, so well, we'll let you hear from Jerry,
will let you hear from Shotty as well. The reason
why I asked you that is because there are a
lot of unhappy Cowboy fans who feel that, you know,
if Dan Quinn had been the head coach, they wouldn't
be in sort of the pickle that they've been in.
And to be fair to him, Commanders got to the

(03:58):
NFC Championship game line last year.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
It's just frustrating when when you donate a game the
way the Commanders did last night.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
They did.

Speaker 3 (04:06):
They donated the game. They had three three turnovers, a
red zone pick, a rain caused fumble, and then another
fumble on the plus side of the field. You don't
it's not winning football. It's not winning football, Craig.

Speaker 2 (04:19):
There's a lot of non winning football being played by
NFC East teams these days. There's quite a bit of
that going on, which makes it up for grabs.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
I think.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
You know, even though the Eagles would have to be
considered the favorite, they've dropped too in a row all
of a sudden, by the way, the Buffalo Bills have
dropped too in a row. If you caught a glimpse
of that other Monday night football game. And I watched
a good bit of that since it was before the
baseball game started anyway, and Bijon Robinson made Longhorn fans proud.
What a career night for him and for the Falcons

(04:53):
as well to have him have the monster game he
had and in something like what two hundred and thirty
eight yards from screaming total at the eighty one yard
touchdown run. You know in the clickbait world that television
networks can be as well as the fan sites and

(05:18):
online things can be. There was a comment made going
to a break on Sports Center this morning where it said,
see why one NFL player compared himself to Steph Curry.
That's not what John Robinson did. They asked him about
being in that zone or whatever where you feel kind

(05:40):
of invincible. He said, well, you know, you take the
combination of your god given talent and your work and
you put it together and sometimes you just feel really
good like you're kind of in that zone.

Speaker 1 (05:50):
He said.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
It's kind of like how Steph Curry feels like he's
never going to miss a shot. He puts it up
blah blah blah, and you feel good blah blah blah.

Speaker 4 (05:57):
That was it.

Speaker 2 (05:57):
He wasn't comparing himself. He was saying comparing the feel
of the situation. If there, if there's a more humble
NFL athlete than Bejon Robinson, I'd like to meet him.

Speaker 3 (06:09):
I was going to say, Craig, you got to cover
Bejon during his time here, and I got to cover
him from well more of a distance as a student
at the time, on the sideline, covering the games and
at times breaking that journalistic rule of no cheering in
the press box, and you.

Speaker 2 (06:23):
Know, going, did you really do that?

Speaker 3 (06:24):
No, of course I didn't cheer the press box, But
on days when I wasn't selected to cover the Longhorns
for TSTV Sports, sure, I was going to the game
as a fan. Okay, all right, getting that student experience,
not just not just put on the journalist's hat all
the time like we do today.

Speaker 2 (06:38):
Right, and not just being the student all the time either.
You got to you got to kind of morph the two.

Speaker 3 (06:44):
But I was gonna say, you know, if there's a
guy to come after for being you know, too bold,
too obnoxiously confident, too much into himself, pick somebody else.

Speaker 1 (06:54):
Okay, it's it's not Bjeon.

Speaker 2 (06:55):
I'm not going to convince folks it's bjon.

Speaker 5 (06:57):
No.

Speaker 2 (06:57):
He's said he's really really looks good and it was
good to see him have the success that he's had,
especially for a Falcons team that's been up and down
and all of a sudden, you know, here's Atlanta in
the conversation, Yeah, five games and about possibly being a
playoff contender. I would submit to you that the NFL

(07:22):
this year is more of a mixed bag than maybe
than it has ever been, certainly since the merger, since
nineteen seventy. I think I go all the way back
to that, because I've seen some other things about this
is the most that this has happened since the merger.
The most that that has happened the merger was nineteen

(07:44):
seventy when AFL and NFL just became just NFL and
the AFL teams were absorbed into the National Football League.
And they also managed to get the Browns, Steelers, and
Colts to move from the old NFL to be in
the af That's why the brown Steelers and Colts are

(08:04):
in the AFC. They were in the old NFL when
they had sixteen teams and the AFL had ten teams
and three even over there, and then it was thirteen
in each And of course, obviously they've expanded since, but
that first year of the merger when they went into
NFC and AFC, a lot of things are compared to
that year, and really and truly, if you think about

(08:25):
that particular first year, it was kind of a mixed bag.
The Baltimore Colts, who went into the AFC that first year,
wound up winning the Super Bowl that year to beat
the Cowboys in the game that had like eleven combined turnovers,
six by the Colts and five by the Cowboys, and
Baltimore one on a field goal from Jim O'Brien with
five seconds to.

Speaker 3 (08:44):
Go, rookie kicker Jim O'Brien. Jim, So that was our
that was our John Facenda.

Speaker 1 (08:51):
Yeah, yeah, that's our nod to John Facenda today.

Speaker 2 (08:53):
So, but it had a lot of unusual things, like
the Cowboys were five and four after being just flattened
at home playing home games in the Cotton Bowl Stadium
back then on a Monday night by the Cardinals thirty
eight nothing.

Speaker 1 (09:09):
They were five and four, and all of a sudden.

Speaker 2 (09:10):
They got it together and they won five in a row,
and they won the NFCS and he did it largely
with defense. They in their last four games I think,
allowed a grand total of twenty points. They won a
game over the brown six to two, and then got
into the playoffs, played Detroit it was the wild card
and beat them five to nothing. Sure still to this

(09:30):
day the lowest scoring playoff game in NFL history spread
was five and a half.

Speaker 1 (09:34):
Yeah, that's right. They won.

Speaker 2 (09:36):
They won the NFC, Baltimore won the AFC, and then
the Colts, like I said, one that what was referred
to as a Blunderbowl.

Speaker 1 (09:46):
They won that one to do it.

Speaker 2 (09:47):
So things were up in the air even that year,
is my point, and now they.

Speaker 1 (09:53):
Might be more up in the other.

Speaker 2 (09:54):
The team with the best record in the NFL's Tampa
being there five and one. Nobody else is better than
four and two.

Speaker 3 (10:00):
And think about the way Baker's doing that. The receivers
they're losing. I mean, I've been right, he's not getting
talked about enough. I don't think no his name will
start to come up more for MVP. Considerate season is
only about a third of the way through, not even
really completely that, but you know, right around there and
the Niners beat Seattle. I think we both think pretty

(10:21):
highly of Seattle, like we discussed here a couple of
weeks ago.

Speaker 2 (10:24):
Yep, and think highly of Tampa Bay now with what
they've done. So it's it's this is gonna be interesting
to watch this year in the NFL, both in the
NFC and EFC, because you look in the NFC East
Eagles are four and two, but they've been very human
the last two weeks. No reason to think that the
Commanders and or the Cowboys couldn't be in there, maybe

(10:48):
even the Giants, I don't know, at least upsetting the Apple.

Speaker 3 (10:50):
Card Bears have a very winnable schedule. Yeah, Vikings are
not left for dead.

Speaker 2 (10:55):
No, and the Lions and Packers are okay, but they
haven't been great. And in the way, it's a real
mixed bag. I have a three way tie ride now
between the forty nine Ers, Rams, and Seahawks, and the
Niners lost Fred Warner.

Speaker 1 (11:07):
Yeah for the year. Yeah, that's a bad deal for them.

Speaker 2 (11:10):
We don't know how long Puka Dekol will be out
of field, be out. He's listed as questionable for the
game for the Rams in London against the Jaguars this Sunday.
So all these teams have injury issues that the forty
nine ers have largely been able to overcome a lot
of those, but Tampa Bay, which continues to pile up
the injuries, continues to excel.

Speaker 3 (11:33):
There's one team that is getting somebody key back this week,
and our listeners might not like us pointing it out,
but they've quietly kind of righted the ship here, and
that's Kansas City.

Speaker 1 (11:43):
Yeah. Yeah, they get a key.

Speaker 3 (11:44):
Receiving weapon back in Rashid Rice Savior Worthies working back
into the fold two. And yep, we've seen how differently
Andy Reid's offense looks with both Worthy and Rice out there.

Speaker 2 (11:53):
Colin Cowherd does the program that precedes this, and he's
never been shy about professing his love for the Kansas
City Chiefs, and he today said they are the best
team in the NFL right now.

Speaker 3 (12:05):
See, I don't know if that's true though. I don't
think we can say I don't think we can say that.

Speaker 2 (12:08):
But you don't profess to love for the Kansas City
Chiefs the way he does.

Speaker 1 (12:11):
That's why that's why I say that.

Speaker 3 (12:13):
And of course, I gave the Eagles the kiss of
death a couple of weeks ago. I was all in
on them as number one in my power rankings.

Speaker 1 (12:18):
I was all in on Buffalo.

Speaker 6 (12:20):
Look at them.

Speaker 2 (12:21):
They've dropped two in a row. Now, you know, Josh
Allen did not have a good game last night. So
you know that's why I said this is going to
be a mixed bag all the way through the year.
I think in the AFC South, who's the best team?
They are Colts.

Speaker 3 (12:37):
Maybe, well they had they weren't so convincing against the Cardinals,
right exactly, and the Cardinals were missing almost everybody on offense.
I think the Colts offense is legit. I have questions
about their defense after allowing Jacoby Brissett minus Marvin Harrison Junior.

Speaker 2 (12:54):
To make that such a good football game, right right,
Jacksonville beats Kansas City, then turns around.

Speaker 1 (13:00):
Can't capitalize on it.

Speaker 2 (13:02):
So yeah, you know, And the only sure thing about
that division is at Tennessee is a mess, obviously firing
their head coach. UH and UH. In the North yeah,
maybe Pittsburgh, it's because the rest of them have fallen
off with the injuries or whatever else.

Speaker 3 (13:16):
They've got a hard schedule coming up. I'm really I've
been skeptical of Pittsburgh all year. I still am, but
I am a little bit impressive what they've done.

Speaker 1 (13:25):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (13:26):
And then in the West, Yeah, maybe Kansas City is
the best, but the Chargers are hanging around there. Broncos
all of a sudden look kind of dangerous. That's why
I say this thing is going to be pretty messy
for a while.

Speaker 3 (13:37):
To wake up for that bad London game though, Broncos Jets.

Speaker 2 (13:41):
You know what I didn't, Well, it was like third
quarter by the time I woke up. By the time
I got back from Dallas for the OG, I just
wanted to sleep.

Speaker 1 (13:49):
I needed a full.

Speaker 3 (13:50):
Nicely, I don't blame you. That Bronco performance was a
win over the Jets. Yeah, but it dowsed some downs,
some cold water over them for me.

Speaker 1 (13:58):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (13:59):
Yeah, they and sometimes you know, making that trip overseas
can do it. You know, they can throw you out
of your game a little bit. So we'll see what
happens there. All right, we got a lot to get
to well, like I said, we've got cowboy sound. We'll
hear from long worn safety Michael taff coming up we
have inconceivable this hour. In the three o'clock hour, our
weekly Tuesday conversation with the editor in chief of Dave

(14:21):
Campbell's Texas Football magazine, Greg Tepper, will join us and
we'll hear from Ethan Burke in the three o'clock hour
some more Cowboys sound, and in the four o'clock hour
we'll hear from rch Manning. So we'll do all that
and more here on a Tuesday afternoon. Glad to have
you with us. If you want to reach us via
the text line, all you have to do is text
the word Texas followed by your questioner comment to eight

(14:44):

Standard messaging and data rates may apply. And if you
want to reach us on the talkback microphone the talkback feature,
we had somebody doing that yesterday and that's the way
you got to go. If if you want to win tickets,

n Alice Cooper later. But if you just want to leave

(15:05):
us a voice message on talkback, you can do that.
All you have to do is download the free iHeartRadio
app if you haven't already done so, once you have
a download in the search bar and you search AM
thirteen under the Zone, it'll pop up just like that.
We suggest quid make it a preset that'll help you,
especially in the contesting circumvent some of the other matting

(15:26):
crowd that.

Speaker 1 (15:26):
Goes into it.

Speaker 2 (15:27):
And then you'll see two buttons, a white one with
a kind of a triangular shaped arrow type thing that's
to listen to whatever we have on the air. But
there's a red button with a white microphone that's our
talkback mic. You hit that button and you can leave
us a message up to thirty seconds to talk about
whatever is on your mind about it.

Speaker 1 (15:46):
So that's two ways to reach us.

Speaker 2 (15:48):
And we'll get to that, and we'll hear from Michael
Taff coming up here on a Tuesday, a Texan Tuesday
on sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone. And we
always can listen for free on the iHeartRadio app sports.

Speaker 1 (16:01):
Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.

Speaker 4 (16:03):
Meg Waite.

Speaker 2 (16:05):
Inside the producer Jay Hermon, glad to have you with
us here, tex And Tuesday means amongst our return cuts
in the four o'clock hour, we hear from the King
George Straight in the three o'clock hour, the immortal Willie
Nelson or I should say the iconic, and then the
immortal Stevie Ray Vaughan in the two o'clock hour.

Speaker 1 (16:27):
So glad to have that in honor.

Speaker 2 (16:31):
Text and Tuesday, glad to have you with us here
on this Coming up, we're gonna have Inconceivable in a
few minutes, and we'll hear from Dallas Cowboys head coach
Brian Schottenheimer and also from team owner and president Jerry Jones.

Speaker 1 (16:53):
That's coming up.

Speaker 2 (16:54):
Meantime, let's hear some Cowboys sound, excuse me, some long
worn sound. We'll hear from Michael Taff, the long runs,
safety and the reflections that he would have, because remember
last week he was asked about does it ever get old,
and he said no, it's always a special appreciation.

Speaker 1 (17:13):
He always tries to soak it up.

Speaker 2 (17:16):
A little bit and and understand what it's all about
and the feeling that that comes into it. So let's
hear from Michael Taff his reflections on the final Red
River game of his career.

Speaker 7 (17:35):
Super cool to know that I get to go out
as a champ.

Speaker 8 (17:40):
Super cool to know that the last two years, I
got to go out with that golden hat on, so
it was really cool. You know, I never wanted to
talk trash when I knew there was a possibility of
coming back. So now hopefully I can. I can make
to the next level and I get to you know,
have opportunities to be with guys from promo you and

(18:02):
it'd be a whole lot better talking trash now that
that I left as a as on top, so it
feels good.

Speaker 2 (18:08):
Yeah, all right, So what about that trash talking which
he involved in some that went on in the tunnel
one at the start when there was the tempers flaring.

Speaker 8 (18:15):
Man, I stay out of all that and before the game.
I'm more of a guy that likes to talk trash
on the field. I know I can see that, but
I like to do it in between the white lines.

Speaker 7 (18:24):
I don't really like. I think talk is cheap before
the game.

Speaker 8 (18:28):
So both sides, right, Like, we had guys that you know,
our guys are guys, So I just my my personal
opinion is all right, let's let's do it between the
white lines. That's that makes it more fun anyway, all right?

Speaker 2 (18:41):
Uh long, Warts of course had three interceptions in the
ball game, and that was very, very important. And uh,
you know you had two from Malik Muhammad and you
also had one.

Speaker 1 (18:55):
From Grayson Littleton.

Speaker 2 (18:56):
Michael Tap by the way, came close to getting one
and Leon the foulcon close to getting one. Half was
asked about the impact of those interceptions on the ball game.

Speaker 8 (19:05):
We had to fight. We knew it was gonna be
a fight the whole game. And when you go into
the halftime knowing that you just got the ball back,
defense just took a stand and your offense gets the
ball going into the second half, that's an opportunity to
make a huge momentum change. And that's all we were
talking about was this can be the momentum swing if

(19:26):
we do our job on defense. If offense you know,
goes down and scores, and offense takes seven and a
half minutes off the clock on their first drive, we
get a three and out and then the offense, I
think it's points again on that next drive. So talk
about a momentum change. That all starts with Manny's play.
But that's all we were talking about. Momentum and that
that game right there, that's all about momentum.

Speaker 7 (19:48):
Is you know what side.

Speaker 8 (19:49):
Can you be on Can you be on that burn
orange side or can be on the other side? And
I'm glad the momentum is on the burner orange side
in that quarter.

Speaker 2 (19:56):
Okay, a momentum happens also to help spring upsets in
their have been upsets in the SEC so far this season,
so Taff was asked if he and his teammates discuss
what's going on around them with some of those upsets.

Speaker 7 (20:11):
I think back as I was kind of thinking about
this game.

Speaker 8 (20:15):
Well, first, Kentucky's a really good, really good team, just
speaking on the offense, specifically, looking at their tape. That
quarterback played against US a little bit last year, and
you could tell his potential. He was slinging the rock
last year on tape. He's been he's been playing really well,
uh running backs, really good, really good running back. And
then they got a couple of receivers, one transfer from Alabama.

(20:37):
We played them in twenty three, so they got a
stacked team. But I think back when Ady Mitchell was
on our team Georgia. He was on the Georgia team
before they win a national championship. That Georgia team almost
gets upset in the regular season. I can't remember if
it was to Florida or Kentucky or somebody like that.
That you know, they they're favored and they should go

(20:57):
in and win. But that just shows you what the SEC
is all about. It's all about clean slate. It's a
new week, and every single team on your schedule is
really good when you go into the SEC. So we
know what type of challenge we have. We know a
night environment on the road in the SEC is going
to be a really hard environment to play in, so
we're excited for the challenge.

Speaker 1 (21:19):
The upset, man, my.

Speaker 8 (21:22):
Voice was If you think my voice was gone after
some of those guys, my voice was totally gone after
that game. Not only did I have to communicate on
the field, but also had an opportunity to celebrate with
the Golden Hot. So I appreciate Thomas and John for
letting me get a break for.

Speaker 2 (21:36):
A little bit, you know, the upsets. The upset to
which you were referred a couple of years ago was
Kentucky beating Georgia on that. You know, so what does
this performance say about this team coming off the loss
to Florida and what's ahead on the schedule compared to

(21:57):
what others had been saying about the team.

Speaker 8 (22:00):
Say about this team, we're constantly growing. We got a
team full of competitors. And what competitors do is they
look at tape and they they see the good stuff
and they try to mimic the good stuff, but they
obviously see the bad stuff too, and they don't want
that to be on their tape ever. Again, So as
a competitor, you're always constantly trying to grow. I think
there's no better competitor and in the in the sport

(22:22):
atmosphere than Kobe Bryant. I know spoke about him before,
but the way that he talks about success and how
there's always a learning opportunity even when you succeed, is
that's what kind of our mindset is always trying to
grow and our best is still out there and we're
still chasing our best. And so I'm excited for these

(22:43):
next six games, more importantly, this next opportunity on Saturday.
I think, you know, when you get some confidence with
a win under your belt, that's really good for the middle.
But to know that we're competitors and we're constantly growing
is a good feeling too.

Speaker 2 (23:00):
One of the guys to whom Michael Taff has been
a bit of a mentor and a good friend with
and some give and take has been Arch Manning. And
so he was asked about, you know, how Arch has
been able to bear up.

Speaker 1 (23:14):
Through all of this, you know when he got all.

Speaker 2 (23:17):
Kinds of positive attention started and all kinds of negative
attention after the sluggers start for the team and for him,
And so he was asked about, you know what, what
is his perception of how Arch has been able to
you know, navigate all of that.

Speaker 8 (23:30):
I think it was just a little pens up frustration
about people's views on Arch. I think if you know
football at all, you don't you don't have a negative
thing to say about Arch Manning because the way that
he fights, the way that he loves his teammates, the
way that everything could be about him. And he goes
into press conference with Holly row a well respected ESPN reporter,

(23:53):
and only talks about his teammates and his running back.
That just shows you that if you really know football,
you don't have anything bad to say about at.

Speaker 2 (24:00):
Arch many Yeah, that's one, and you don't have anything
bad to say about his teammate. And the secondary Malik Muhammad,
who had the two picks.

Speaker 7 (24:07):
Super proud of him.

Speaker 8 (24:09):
Obviously knew a breakout game coming out of five was
was due and he showed it. He's so instinctual. He's
really good in all phases of being a corner. But
he showed what you need to what you need out
of an sec cornerback coming in, laying the wood, going
to sell out for the ball, getting PBUs he was.

Speaker 7 (24:30):
He was all over the place.

Speaker 2 (24:31):
Now, I mentioned the two near interceptions in addition to
the three that John Matteer threw, two to Malik Muhammad
and one of the Grayson Littleton right, I mentioned two
near miss ones, one from Leongelofoul one from Tata was
also the one from Jelani McDonald dropping what almost certainly
would have been a pick six on that. So how
about Julianne's mindset in the view of Michael taff after

(24:57):
having an opportunity but unable to come up with that one.

Speaker 7 (24:59):
You know, I was through the room, has been teasing
him a little bit.

Speaker 8 (25:02):
But my stance on it is like I don't want
to tease him when it's like that, because he's already
he's already so hard on himself, like he was staring
at that end zone when he got his hands on it,
So he knows what that could have been to silence
the crowd and the rhetoric of rivalry. Like, I don't
need to give him any trash for that. He already

(25:22):
he already knows what he could have done. But man,
he's all over the field. He's he's really fun to
play next to. I think we make a really good duo,
and he makes me better. I'd like to say I
make him better too.

Speaker 6 (25:33):
You.

Speaker 2 (25:33):
Yeah, a lot of the people think that Julia McDonald's
a real glue guy in the secondary. You know who
else is a blue guy in the uh in the
eye of Michael taff that would be Ryan Niblett, who,
of course had the big.

Speaker 1 (25:45):
Punk return for the touchdown.

Speaker 2 (25:46):
It has just been a versatile guy and stayed the
course throughout his collegie career.

Speaker 8 (25:50):
The reason I agree with that statement is why just
look at the celebration after the after the touchdown. Everybody's
holding him up like like it's a high school musical movie.

Speaker 7 (26:00):
They hit the game winner and everybody's holding them up.

Speaker 8 (26:04):
So that that Yeah, as we're watching it on Sunday,
I'm like, that shows you that everybody loves Ryan Niblett
on the team, so great teammate always has a smile
on his face when he walks in the building.

Speaker 2 (26:15):
You know who else the teammates really love and who
else is like an important guy and a key cock
for this defense.

Speaker 8 (26:20):
Anthony Hill. What Anthony Hill is put on tape is
that he can do it all type of linebacker. Freshman year,
he's off the edge getting sacks against a top five
Alabama team away. Sophomore year he's learning the the scheme
of being.

Speaker 7 (26:35):
A mic backer. Now junior year, he's doing it all.

Speaker 8 (26:39):
He's coming off the edge on third down, he's playing
true you know, off the box backer. And then he's obviously,
like you said, being a coverage backer. So he's a
do it all type of linebacker. It's cool to see
him put that on tape. But obviously when you come
out in ten personnel picture most of the game, then
you're gonna have to get the mic out of the box.
So when they're putting the tight end out of the box,

(26:59):
it's it's really hard to you know, if you want
to play the play the pass pretty well, then it's
hard to keep them in the box.

Speaker 7 (27:05):
Just knowing how defenses are schemed.

Speaker 2 (27:07):
To Natalie go on the road, true road environment. So
the next two weeks Kentucky this week, Mississippi State next week,
and he was asked about what is the key to
carrying over this kind of performance is kind of mindset
this kind of effort into the next two weeks, which
are both true road games.

Speaker 8 (27:23):
Yeah, just trusting it. I think the platform with college football,
you know, it's so it's so different nowadays we're going
I think back to the twenty twenty three season when
we make it to the Culture Wall playoffs, we lose
to Owe You in the middle of the year, we
come off of buy and then we're playing Houston, and
it was the same type of climb, right it was

(27:44):
if we wanted to go to the Big Troup Championship
and then to the Culcheur of Wall Plass, we had
to win out. And so I've been through it before.
I know what it looks like. But you can't look
too far ahead. You're gonna stumble on what's right in
front of you. So that's what I was appreciated to
them is, you know, just just be your feet are,
just take everything with the grants.

Speaker 7 (28:01):
I'll be grateful for the opportunity, you know.

Speaker 8 (28:04):
Yeah, I talked to a lot of past Texas football
players and what they would do to be running out
of the conbull.

Speaker 7 (28:12):
You know, they do anything to do it, So be grateful.

Speaker 2 (28:14):
Yeah, there's a lot of gratitude out there for that.
All right, I'm next, we bring Inconceivable here on this
Tuesday afternoon on sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone
in the iHeartRadio app. Second hour of the program here
on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone here.

Speaker 1 (28:31):
On a Tuesday afternoon. Greg, way with you.

Speaker 2 (28:33):
Hope your Tuesday is doing all right. Coming up in
a few minutes, we'll talk football of the collegiate and
high school variety in the state of Texas with Greg Tepper,
editor in chief of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. We'll
have more on the Long Horns coming up a little
later on in the four o'clock hour. We're here from
Arch Banning. We're gonna hear from Ethan Burke a little

(28:54):
bit later this hour, but I wanted to go down
the road a little bit with the Dallas Cowboys. Cowboys
coming off that thirty twenty seven at the gun Walk
Off loss in Charlotte to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday
to get ready for the Washington Commanders, who come off
a twenty five twenty four walk off loss on the

(29:15):
last play the game on the field goal last night
of Monday Night Football to the Chicago Bears. So the
Cowboys host the Commanders this weekend. Brian Schotteimer is weekly
news conference talking about what his message to his team
was in the meetings yesterday coming off of the Sunday loss.
I told him the truth.

Speaker 9 (29:35):
I told him that we did not play that game
physical enough. When you look at it, you know, they
controlled the line of scrimmage. They owned the line of scrimmage.
That's one of it's part of our identity. We were
not surprised by it. But at the same time, it
was one game, and we know we can be a
physical football team. We know we've done that at times,

(29:55):
but we weren't that yesterday.

Speaker 2 (29:58):
Different reasons.

Speaker 10 (29:59):
You know.

Speaker 9 (30:00):
Think they did some really good scheme stuff to us
on the on their defensive side of the ball, they
two gaped to some some of their read and react stuff.

Speaker 2 (30:08):
They took us, you know, they.

Speaker 9 (30:10):
Stretched us out a little bit, and I didn't, you know,
I didn't think like, uh, we've ever found our rhythm one.
I mean, anytime you have your longest run a six yards,
that's not very good. And then on the other side
of the ball, I think that they just kind of
they wanted to come in and double team us and
run duo and our our our fits were off, you know,

(30:30):
you know the run fits are.

Speaker 1 (30:32):
They're hard, you.

Speaker 9 (30:32):
Know, they're calculated, and you got to get everybody in
the same gaps, and they strained to some and they
got some balls on the perimeter that we didn't have
much contained for and they hit explosives and we didn't.

Speaker 2 (30:44):
All right, So the cowboy's been up and down and
up and down and up and down, including the tie
which is half up and half down. It's here they
are at two, three and one. So he's asked, how
does he make sure that this whole thing doesn't spiral
out of control?

Speaker 9 (30:55):
Well, certainly, we focus in the moment, you know, and
in the consistency or inconsistency is real, you know, you know,
And I think that it goes back to practice, you know,
we want to have good days of practice.

Speaker 2 (31:12):
We want to focus on the fundamentals.

Speaker 9 (31:14):
I think that's one of the things that when you're
a little bit inconsistent, it's not always scheme. The schemes
weren't perfect yesterday. I can assure you that on in
all three phases. But you know, we need to get
back to really emphasize and fundamentals and letting these guys
go play and play with confidence and have the ability
to win their matchups with their fundamentals.

Speaker 2 (31:33):
All right, So we are all well aware of the
troubles the Cowboys have had on defense, and I believe
it's our fran Clarence Hill from Dallas cowboyes dot com
who asked, Shoddy.

Speaker 1 (31:44):
What's what's chill, wasn't it?

Speaker 2 (31:45):
I think yeah, I think it was that asked him,
because guys are like trying to make huge plays and
missing on interceptions and missing on the tackles.

Speaker 9 (31:54):
Is there too much hero ball going on out there?
I think you know, you did see guys pressing.

Speaker 2 (32:01):
You know.

Speaker 9 (32:01):
It goes back to the thing that I say, you
know in terms of you know, hey, you know, don't press,
just go play. And I think anytime you know you're
giving up big plays and you can't stop the run
and you're struggling to do that, guys are going to
try to shoot gaps and do things like that. And
the one thing about defense is, you know, if one
guy is out of position, or one guy is supposed
to be in the A gap and he's in the
B gap, that creates running lanes. And so I don't

(32:24):
think hero ball is it. But I do think that
there's times where guys press and they're trying to make plays,
and why because they they want to win and they
want they want to they want to try to help
things turn around. And that's not usually a good recipe though.

Speaker 2 (32:39):
All right, here's a question continues to get asked, like
almost weekly in different forms, whether it's Matt Eberflus, the
defensive coordinator, or whether it's the defensive coaching staff, or
whether it's players on the defensive front or the linebacking
court or the secondary.

Speaker 1 (32:58):
In other words, is it all there? Uh?

Speaker 2 (33:02):
You know that some where they don't have to try
to seek some help from outside. So the question in
this particular time was do you have what you need
in house to find the solutions on defense? Yeah? I
think so, I mean I really do.

Speaker 9 (33:17):
I think, you know, we uh, you know, we're going
to continue to make these guys compete for playing time.

Speaker 2 (33:24):
We're not blaming.

Speaker 9 (33:25):
I'm not putting blame on any player that maybe doesn't
start this week or doesn't. We as a coaching staff
have to be better. We know that in all three phases.
But like if you believe in the mantra of compete
every day, the best players need to play and we
need to continue to focus on things that we do well.
We certainly did not do enough of that at the

(33:46):
line of scrimmage yesterday, both phases running the football and
stopping the run. But it doesn't mean you don't have
the people to do it. It just means you have
to look for solutions. And does that mean there's going
to be some potential changes that you see us do differently?

Speaker 1 (34:01):
Yes.

Speaker 9 (34:02):
Is it going to be something that just jumps off
the film and all we do now is play nothing
but man to man.

Speaker 2 (34:07):
No, that's not happening.

Speaker 9 (34:09):
But there will be some changes and there will be
some things that we look at that as we figure
out our personnel even more that you'll see us maybe
move into a direction where you're seeing more of that.

Speaker 2 (34:25):
All right, all right, so there's some sound from Brian Chotterer.
We'll hear more from shoddy a little later on in
the program, but up next we talk college and high
school football in the state of Texas. Greg Tepper, editor
in chief Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, joins us next
when we continue on thirteen under the Zone, Any Guy
Heart Radio app.

Speaker 10 (34:42):
I woke up still not dead again today.

Speaker 2 (34:47):
The internets that I had passed to.

Speaker 10 (34:49):
Win if I die, I wanted to stay.

Speaker 3 (34:56):
I woke up still not dead again today.

Speaker 2 (35:00):
That's how we all feel after a Texas OU game.
You know, we woke up still not feeling dead today.
You know I felt pretty tired after that, but you
know it all worked out all right. We welcome you
back to the program here on thirteen under the Zone,
Craig way with you Stime for a weekly conversation with
the editor in chief of Dave Campus Texas Football magazine,
who himself has awakened some mornings and said, Hey, I

(35:22):
woke up not dead again today. That's Greg Tipper. Am
I right about that tip.

Speaker 10 (35:28):
Every day since nineteen eighty six, I've done it and
it's one of my great achievements. Now, Craig, lay, before
we get going, I do have a question, because you
mentioned Texas.

Speaker 2 (35:36):
OU yeah, you you.

Speaker 10 (35:39):
Were there obviously calling the game for Longhorns and the
victory there. How many corny dogs did you have.

Speaker 2 (35:49):
In one sitting? Just one in one? The keywords there
are in one city. I was under I was under
direct orders to bring one back since Linda couldn't make
the trip. So what I did was, and I kind
of mentioned this yesterday in the year, but what I
did was I got ready to leave, and I was
taking our sideline reporter Will Matthews with me. We were

(36:12):
going to drop him off back of the hotel. So
last year, Will and I and Linda stopped at a
Fletcher's Corny Dog stand on the way out and got
one on our way out of the stadium.

Speaker 1 (36:25):
You know, the dynamic has changed for me. Tip.

Speaker 2 (36:27):
I used to have it for breakfast when we had
the eleven AM kicks. Now in two point thirty, I
find it more appealing to wait until after the game,
because you know, they served barbecue and the pregame media meal.

Speaker 1 (36:38):
And all that sort of stuff.

Speaker 10 (36:40):
The reason I asked is that our Mike Craven was
at the game, as you do when you write college
football for Day Candle Sexist Football, and he had a
pregame corny dog and a postgame corny Dog. And I
told him in our meeting on Monday that I have
never ever been prouder to approve an expense repard than

(37:02):
I was the one that Mike Craven submitted for his
pre and post game corny dog. That's just that's just
doing it right, in my opinion, and giving the people
what they want and having the necessary fuel to do it.

Speaker 2 (37:14):
Hey, the mere fact that you're approving an expense report
for a Fletcher's corny dog says it all that that says.

Speaker 1 (37:20):
And so so what I did was.

Speaker 2 (37:23):
This time after the win, Will Matthews and I get
ready to leave and I tell him, I said, I'm
under orders. I got to get a corn dog for
Linda and take it back so I can take it home.
I mean, she says, the miracles of the modern air fryar,
you know, would make it taste brand news. So so
we go down and I get free one that I

(37:43):
ate on the spot, and Will and I took a
photo together like we did last year the corn corn dogs.

Speaker 1 (37:48):
It so one I eat home the spot.

Speaker 2 (37:50):
I wrapped two in a plastic bag and stuck it
in my backpack and drove it back to Georgetown, and
my backpack has this wonderful aroma of corn dogs. Afterwards,
but we Linda heating up in the air fire for
lunch on Sunday and bingo, that came out great.

Speaker 10 (38:06):
So well, let me tell you something that that I
don't need to know how much you paid for the
corny dog, but I will tell you that what we
call that that aroma that now inhabits your backpack, that's
what you call a stringe benefit, you know, right, those
are the things that you're not necessarily paying for, but
you get as an aside. So so good for you.
I'm glad you. I'm glad you're certainly getting your money's worth.

Speaker 1 (38:27):
And then some from that answered your questions.

Speaker 2 (38:30):
Eighteen eighteen coupons and I think, yeah, twenty coupons for
twenty dollars, so you do the math.

Speaker 1 (38:37):
So yeah, but it was worth it.

Speaker 2 (38:40):
Given Saturday, the way it went down, I didn't mind
spending fifty four dollars on three corn dogs.

Speaker 1 (38:45):
You know, it's it worked. Okay.

Speaker 2 (38:49):
That Texas win kind of popped the Longhorns back up
in the minds of Mike Craven and the staff didn't
in terms of your fps power pole.

Speaker 10 (38:59):
Yeah, most certainly. And I think that, you know, Texas
fans are probably thinking the same thing the word thinking,
which is where has that been?

Speaker 2 (39:07):
What was that all about?

Speaker 10 (39:08):
And certainly I think it's easy in hindsight to look
at and say, well, yeah, that's tack of defense played
fantastic against a wounded Oklahoma team and give a lot
of credit, I think to the defensive staff for game
planning against an offense in Oklahoma that was without a
number of their weapons, at least at full strength, we
can say. But furthermore, I thought that was the best

(39:30):
overall game that we have seen in a real sense
from arch Manning. And the numbers are not going to
blow you away, but what he was able to do
as far as taking care of the football, as far
as putting it on time, you know, with his delivery,
I thought was impressive, and especially there in the second half,
I thought that they really roared to life, and that

(39:51):
is a lot more what we've wanted to see. I
think when you take a look at this Texas team,
it's it's going to be a different I think we
have to out our minds around the fact that this
is going to be a different team than we thought
we were going to get. It's an offense that is
not going to be up near the top of the SEC.
It's going to be in the bottom half the SEC.

(40:11):
But it's going to be a borderline elite defense that
is capable of holding them in every game possible. And
that's okay, you can win like that. There's a lot
of teams that win like that. We're going to hold
you in it long enough and then win the game
with a big play, when with field position, when with
a couple of plays offensively. I think it is just

(40:31):
a matter of kind of readjusting those priors and understanding that, Okay,
this is not going to seem be a team that
goes out there and hangs fifty points every time they
put on their cleats. Instead, it's going to be a
team that relies on the defense. It's going to be
a team that relies on coming up with big plays
and then just get those big plays in the special teams.

(40:52):
I thought that that punt return from Ryan Niblet, needless
to say, was the biggest game playing the game, because
not only did it obviously a scoring play, but obviously
it also flips the field position and it changes the
entire game in that regard. So those special teams plays
are going to be really important to say, three phases
type game. And where in Texas may not be as

(41:14):
gifted in the offensive side as we thought they were
going to be the defense and the special teams looked
pretty sound. And if they can win there, they've got
an opportunity to still make some noise. And everything's still.

Speaker 2 (41:23):
Right there in front of them, no doubt about it.
Let me ask you about Texas Tech and the Red
Raiders are being viewed as being a serious, certainly big
twelve championship contender where they can take a major step four.

Speaker 1 (41:38):
This week, a thing went in TEMP this week.

Speaker 2 (41:43):
They come out of the game against Kansas having beaten
them pretty well and kept them at arm's length. But
the story that kept coming out of everybody's talking about is
the tortillas.

Speaker 6 (41:52):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (41:52):
And I've been around Tech games for years where the
tortillas were sent flying. So now they finally actually got
penalized likes for it because they're told, you know, you
get two warnings and then that's it. And and Kirby
Hocott actually said, hey, we're okay, with get the warning
for an opening kickoff.

Speaker 1 (42:10):
The fans continued to.

Speaker 2 (42:11):
Do that, and Joey McGuire, a friend to both of us,
has said he has a real concern that it might
wind up costing them during a game. They took a
couple of fifteen yarders in the game, but wasn't that
big a deal the other night against Kansas. But it
makes for an intriguing sidebar, does it not? To this
great season, Texas Tech.

Speaker 10 (42:30):
Is having Look the fashion at Texas Tech and the
conversation around them is saying, ARVI thirty is going to
cost them a spot in a college football playoff. That's
pretty good. Pretty good problems, I would say on the
South plays. But yeah, look, this is a you know,
obviously that is a big tradition there. The Big twelve

(42:53):
has tried to rein it in. I understand there's a
player safety involvement, and if you're going to allow throwing
tortilla is I understand that there's a concern that people
might be throwing something else, something harder or something like that.
I get it, And also come on, like we're throwing
torteinas here, And that again speaks to the fact that
that these are the biggest problems of facing Taxa Tech

(43:15):
right now. Because I texted my friend this who is
a long suffering Texas Tech fan. I mean, look, Texas
Tech hasnt won outright conference championship since way way away,
before I was born, and this is I texted him
and I said, we need to grapple with the idea
that Texta Tech is an absolute wagon this year, and

(43:37):
we take a look at the scene. I'm having trouble
finding a weakness year because normally with the old text
at Tech you would say, okay, well, yeah they can score,
but can they stop anybody?

Speaker 6 (43:49):
Well, I make.

Speaker 10 (43:50):
The argument that their defense maybe better than their offense,
and what they've been able to do defensively has been
spectacular if you take a look. We've recently today we
put out our twenty twenty five mid season All Texas
College Team. David Bailey, the defensive end, is our mid
season Defensive Player.

Speaker 6 (44:06):
Of the Year.

Speaker 10 (44:07):
Think about that, and then you've also got you know,
other guys on the Tech Tech defense who have steps
up in a big way. Jacob Rodriguez is on there,
Lee Hunter is on there. You know, Romelo Height is
on there. Think about the Texas Tech defense having multiple
pretty you know, mid season all Texas college team guys

(44:27):
on the roster. That is a remarkable seat that they've done.
And then by the way they're all been continues to roll.
And even when the passing game has been in fits
and starts, they can just hand the ball off the
Cameron Dickie and he can run for as much as
he wants. This Texas Tech team is serious business, and
I think the nation is starting to take notice. And
maybe it's just the time of the year. It's mid

(44:49):
season and you've won six games and sits and oh
feels feels legit right more than two and oh does.
But I think everyone's starting to pay attention to what's
going on in Love It. And if they're the biggest
problem is that they got to stop at the students from
throwing tortillas. I would say that Joey Maguire's loving a
pretty charmed life.

Speaker 2 (45:07):
A visiting with Greg Tipper, editor in chief Tape Campbell's
Texas Football Magazine here on the Craig Wave.

Speaker 1 (45:13):
Show, where the producer Jay Carmen is a question for you.

Speaker 3 (45:16):
Well, we always keep an eye on the text line,
and somebody wrote in Love the Dave Campbell's Texas football segments,
but temper. What are your thoughts on North Texas versus UTSA.
I know there were four me and Green players on
that mid season All Texas team. They weren't able to
get it done in front of the sellout crowd. What
do you make of them as kind of a slight
favorite this week against the road runners, at least according

(45:36):
to the odds makers.

Speaker 10 (45:38):
Yeah, so North Texas coming off of last week where
we spent a lot of time talking about that big game,
you know, going up against South Florida, and an opportunity
to really make a statement, and it's all flat play
and simple, and a lot of the worst tendencies of
North Texas kind of came to the forefront, especially defensively
where they were unable to stop. Has been a good

(46:01):
USF team, but certainly not a defense or an offense
you should be given up sixty plus points to. Now
you have an opportunity to get back on the good
book against a UTSA team that's feeling better about themselves,
you know, own the count well. I think was really
good last week in their route of rice through three
touchdown passes. This is I think if you are North Texas.

(46:24):
You have got to be on alert here because there
is a UTSA team that I think will take this
game very personally. I think that is something that Jeff
Trailer does very well, is say, hey, these are the
teams that especially you know, I don't know if he
used this type of language in the locker room, because
these are the guys that didn't recruit you. You chose
UCSA over North Texas. Let's go approve why you chose
UTSA over North Texas. He's very good at riling his

(46:47):
team up against Texas teams. That's one thing that I
think if you're North Texas, you got to keep an
eye out on so one of the things. The other
thing about it is that for UTSA, they've got to
find a way to slow down this North Texas offense
because even though they obviously lost last week, the offense
continues to hum and Eric Morris is continuing to rise
up those ever expanding coaching lists across the nation. And

(47:11):
so if you are UTSA, you've got to find a
couple of stops, and I think that's got to start
up front and get pressure without blitzing. I think that's
one of the things that UTSA has had trouble with
upfront is finding a way to get pressure on the
quarterback without sending extra blitzers. So this is fascinating. I
think North Texas is probably your favorite. I think they've
they've looked to the part more consistently than UTSA. But

(47:32):
we also know that UCSA takes these games extremely seriously
and they would love nothing more than to continue to
derail a North Texas dream season.

Speaker 2 (47:42):
Let's shift to high school football now, and did Summer
Creeks did certainly raise my eyebrows? Lost to ce King?
How does that shake up in your mind? Not only
six A and six A Division two, I guess and
specific ultimately, but also even the greater Houston area about
who's supposed to be the best in the Greater Uston
area right.

Speaker 10 (48:01):
Now, Barn, let me tell you something. I think that
ce King announced their arrival in a big way and
what they did last week. I mean that game ended
up being a lot closer than the score would or
a lot closer than it really played out to be.
It's forty two to twenty eight, but maybe no mistake

(48:22):
about it. Ce King was in complete demand. I think
there are forty two to seven at halftime in that ballgame,
they looked every bit of part of a state championship contender.
And if you watch Ceking, the team speed is really striking,
really strike Deon Sim's their running back is an absolute
bottle of electricity back there. He has been terrific and

(48:45):
they are going to be very, very dangerous. Now they
still have North Shore on the horizon and that is
going to be obviously a huge, huge game. But here's
the thing, it doesn't really it matters that. It doesn't
every game matters. I want to be very clear, but
as far as Division two is concerned, likely it's going
to be ce King and Summer Creek going to the
Division two bracket. And that's the case. The c E

(49:05):
King's already got a gate, the tiebreaker and a game
in hand on Summer Creek. Something would have to go
catastrophically wrong for ce King not to be the number
one seed in Division two. And I will tell you this,
I think ce King can win Region three of Division two. Now,
one thing that's of note is that if you look
on Texas Football dot Com that STEP's latest six A
playoff projections. As the Katie Tigers go into the Division

(49:28):
two bracket, which should obviously change things in a big way.
That is inserting a team that is a legit state
change contender into that into that bracket. But if whether
or not that's the case, I still think you look
at ce King and what they've been able to do,
and you need to start we need to start talking
about them in very serious terms. Twenty three six A

(49:49):
remains in my opinion, the power of nexus. But when
you kind of zoom out and you start taking a
look at at Region three of six A, Division two,
they look even more. King was even more the kind
of team that can go out there and play into December.
They have been not good to start the year.

Speaker 2 (50:08):
I want for four names at you. It's kind of
almost like blind resume. But it's not because I'm gonna
give you their names. I just want to. It's it's
kind of looking at them blind a little bit and
getting your thoughts which of these undefeated teams is for
real and which one is kind of all right?

Speaker 1 (50:26):
So there's four of them.

Speaker 2 (50:27):
You got a six, and oh Dickinson a six, and
oh Harlan from San Antonio, you have a five, and
oh South Grand Prairie and you have a six and
O Magnolia.

Speaker 10 (50:44):
The one that I'm taking most seriously to stay in
the Houston area would be Dickinson. This is a Dickinson
team that may have their best team in years. You
remember we just got done talking about Seeking. They're only
lost on the year is to Dickinson. Dickinson also a
win on the road at Katie. They also have a
win over sci Fiir by multiple scores. They have been terrific.

(51:06):
They're now in the part of the schedule it's not
as pronounced by the example I use is South o'cliff.
This is the time of the year where we stop
talking about South Ocliff because they go into district play
and they're just a lot better than every team in
their district, so they don't play interesting games. That's kind
of where we're at right now with Dickinson. They're almost
certainly going to finish ten and oh, and I think

(51:26):
they are a very very serious contender. That is one
team that I'm keeping eye on. If I were to
sell one of those, I might look at South Grand
Prairie and look, that's not to say anything negative about
Leyden Delays ball Club. I think he has been such
a revelation for that program they're taking over them. But
I take a look at their schedule and the teams

(51:48):
that they've beaten. Their best win on the year is
probably their win over Arlington, which is good, but I'm
not sure they've played in this early anybody. Furthermore, in
that week two d up being a cancelation against Keller
timber Creek if that's a winless Keller timber Creek team,
but they had roared back to tie the game in

(52:09):
the third quarter of that game before it got called.

Speaker 2 (52:12):
I have some.

Speaker 10 (52:13):
Questions about them, specifically whether or not they their strength
of schedule. But look, you look at the way that
this game sixty has has shaken out. I think they're
the best team there. That regular season finale on the
road at Arlington Buie is probably for this injured championship outright.
But I have some questions as to the strength of

(52:33):
schedule for those Warriors, So that might be the team
that I was selling as far as those undefeated are concerned.

Speaker 2 (52:39):
Okay, all right, here's what we do. Is you like
to call it the meanest thing we do. Each week,
I give you three games. You tell me which of
these you would transport to. Here's an oddity. I don't
think i've if not ever, uh, I don't think I've
done this very often with you. Two of the games
were right here in our little backyard in the Greater
Austin area six A Lake Travis at Dripping Springs, which

(53:04):
has the extra added caveat of the fact that Lake
Travis is now playing its home games at Drip right
now while the stadium is undergoing construction. However, Dripping Springs
is not only the residential home team, they're also the
designated home team in this game.

Speaker 1 (53:19):
So you got Lake Travis at Drip.

Speaker 2 (53:22):
How about in my backyard practically Georgetown against shockingly surprisingly Eastview,
which our friend Jerry Forrest has as a Pickham game.

Speaker 1 (53:34):
No surprise here.

Speaker 2 (53:36):
It's being played at the at Berkelback at the Georgetown
Ist Athletic Complex, since that's their home stadium anyway, east
View is technically the home team for this game. And
then in five eighty two you got Anna at prosper.

Speaker 1 (53:49):
Walnut Grove in two teams that are pretty good.

Speaker 10 (53:53):
Which do you choose respectually to Walnut Grove and Anna?
Which is a great matchup to the quarterbacks is happening
for Walnut Grove and Zion Ray Williams for Anna narrows
down to the Greater Austin area, the East View and
Georgetown is fascinating, and I am really interested because you

(54:14):
the on paper you mentioned that they are very easily matched.
And also this is one of those games where there's
so much emotion tied up in it, and and and
every you want to win this game. Forget the fact
that it's for district standings, and forget the fact that
it's an important game within that district. You want to
win this game because it's it's a rivalry game. And

(54:34):
I think that's going to be a fantastic game at
Berkele black Field, But my eyes go to Dripping Springs
at Lake Travis. It is the only matchup of unbeatens
in the u I L this week, and it is
a huge game. I think we have been, you know,
for Lake Travis. I think there's two teams that actually
kind of flown under the radar as far as undefeated
are concerned. You know, Lake Travis kind of bobbing along.

(54:55):
I think we've just kind of come to expect them.
I love what Van Hoffing their back does. I think
he's the real star of that team, and I think
quarterback Luke McBride has stepped up in a big way
for Drip. You know, Chase Aimes has stepped up in
a big way the quarterback spot. But I think that
the real star of that show is a defense led
by Dylan Prasher. This also the other intrigue of this
game in the line I'm so fascinated by it is

(55:17):
that next week you may know, and I'd say that
you know with a smirk, you may know who Lake
Travis plays next week.

Speaker 2 (55:26):
I do.

Speaker 10 (55:27):
And if you don't know, it's a certain team from
a lake that is west, I would just tell you
this has a real look ahead let down possibility here
for Lake Travis. Now, I have full confidence that Hank
Carter's going to have his boys ready, But if they
are even thinking a little bit about who they're playing
next week, Dripping Springs is the wrong team to do

(55:48):
that against, because this is a team that straight up
is good enough to beat them, And if they are
even considering who they're playing next week, then they could
really fall into a trap. This is the first time
I think that we got a real live trap game
in Texas high school football this season. So if you're
Lake Travis, you better be focused on the game in hand,
because this Dripping Springs team is serious and would love

(56:11):
to take a chunk out of Lake Travis. I think
this is a I think it's the game of the
week in the state this week. I'm really really fascinated
by Lake Travis and Dripping Springs.

Speaker 2 (56:19):
By the way, for those who are curious about this
Dripping Springs place west like the last game of the year, Yeah, yeah, and.

Speaker 1 (56:25):
That'll be a chance it's one.

Speaker 10 (56:27):
This is one of those districts where there's three teams
at the top, and this week here in week eight,
we start that kind of battle Royale. We're all going
to match up against one another. So it's kind of
a terrific four week sprint to the finish. Here in
just your twenty six to six as he's Greg Temper.

Speaker 2 (56:42):
He is the editor in chief of Dave Campbell's Texas
Football Magazine. Obviously, as always, you can follow him on
if you want to call it X or Twitter, whatever
you want to call it at Temper's where you follow
him there and he and Ashley Pickle will do that
Friday night scoreboard show that comes right after the You

(57:04):
can see it online at Dave Campbells Texas at Texas
Football dot com. And then also it's all Victory plus
where I won't be on the call this week, but
it's a pretty intriguing game. Also tap that Ted Emmerck
will step in for me. Liberty Hill in Flugerville, we
get a little more, a little more insight in the
Flugerville this week against Liberty Hill, a ton.

Speaker 10 (57:23):
Of insight in the Flugerville. And then the question for
Liberty Hills far day back like after taking some early
losses which we haven't become accustomed to, is Liberty Hill
fully back to being a legit contender? We'll find out.
But yeah, Texas Football tonight immediately after.

Speaker 3 (57:38):
I know some folks in bass Drop where I cover
the games, we'll be watching that one awfully close.

Speaker 10 (57:43):
Yeah, yeah, they will have a vested interest.

Speaker 1 (57:46):
No doubt about it. All Right, Tip, appreciate the time.
Thanks as always. We'll visit with you all right.

Speaker 2 (57:52):
All right, it's Greg Tipper, editor in chief Dave Campbell's
Texas Football Magazine coming up some more long worn sound
Will we continue on third? The Great Willy Nelson here
on a Tuesday afternoon at tex Tuesday on thirteen hundred Zonner.
Thanks again to Greg Jeffery, himself a native Texan by
the way, his alma motel where he played Copell big
game against Lewisville this week up in the Dallas Fort

(58:13):
Worth Metroplex. Back to college football, back to the Long Orange.
In specific Long Orange defensive end Ethan Burke talking about
the way the team has responded and getting ready for
the road trip to Kentucky, ask what did this past
we can teach the team or teach him about the team, you.

Speaker 11 (58:34):
Know, I think like we were a little more focused
on Florida than ourselves, and I think last week just
practiced just what are our calls, like, what do we
have to do to win this game?

Speaker 4 (58:45):
Why are we calling this?

Speaker 11 (58:46):
And just focusing on ourself more just defensively speaking.

Speaker 4 (58:51):
Obviously we had game plan things for them, but just
focus on us, you know. I think that's that's the
key for us as a team.

Speaker 2 (59:01):
After giving up the opening drive for the field goal
and then one early in the second quarter, they clamped
down on as soon as they never got inside the
twenty yard line and forced a lot of three and
outs plus the three turnovers. What were the adjustments that
were made.

Speaker 11 (59:15):
We just switched up some techniques, you know, at least
on the edge, like on base downs rundowns kind of.
I think that helped a lot, just you know, we
had the one of the edge guys off the ball
for the majority of the game, and I think the
game plan is really good.

Speaker 2 (59:36):
Okay, So another guy who's made some progress is on
the offensive front, Nick Brooks, and of course Burke across
the line from him as to match up with him
from time to time.

Speaker 11 (59:46):
Just the little things right like knowing the call, getting
the call, and executing it on the field. You know,
there were miscues early on, which is bound to happen,
But what I've seen is just he's become mature and
has has found a role for himself and has really
started to take advantage of it. Obviously it's not gonna
be perfect, but it's it's getting better and he's shown

(01:00:08):
a ton of growth.

Speaker 4 (01:00:09):
So I'm just I'm proud of him.

Speaker 2 (01:00:11):
So here's a guy who has started to, uh, you know,
compile some memories and some reflections having been in the
program long enough. So he was asked about about his
own thoughts, his own recollections of playing in this Red
River rivalry for me, just.

Speaker 11 (01:00:26):
Really really fun game, like with my team, you know,
with the team, I think we executed on special teams, offense, defense,
and all really came together. And I think we saw
that Saturday, and I just had such a such a
great time, you know, celebrating after you know, celebrating the
little things throughout the game, and just being able to
enjoy playing football.

Speaker 2 (01:00:47):
And then finally he asked about what the team direction
and focus will could or should be like this week
as they prepare for the road trip to Kentucky.

Speaker 11 (01:00:56):
They're talented team, right, but again just just us, like
what are we doing to prepare?

Speaker 4 (01:01:03):
Not focused on who they have as players.

Speaker 11 (01:01:05):
They're obviously talented and we respect them, but how can
we get better throughout the week and become better as
a defense and an offense and challenge one another throughout
the week.

Speaker 1 (01:01:15):
Yeah, all of that is going to be important.

Speaker 2 (01:01:19):
When it was talking to Greg Tepper, obviously we're talking
on the back half of that about high school football,
but in college football, I mentioned the Dave Campbell's Texas
Football magazine power Pole, where they rank every Division one
FBS program. There are thirteen of them in the state

(01:01:41):
of Texas. Going into the game against Oklahoma, their panel
had ranked Texas sixth, sixth in the power Pole. They're
up to number three now in this power pole, Texas
A and M is number one. Number two is Texas Tech.
Then Texas the number three in the comment being the

(01:02:03):
long Orange picked themselves off the match in the twenty
three six winter of Oklahoma the Cotton Bowl. The win
keeps college football playoff hopes live and propels Texas back
into the top twenty five Baylor fourth, Houston FIFTCU six,
SMU seven, North Texas eight, Texas State nine, UTSA ten,
Rise eleven, U TEP twelve in Sam Houston thirteen. That's

(01:02:25):
the Dave Campbell's Texas Football Power Poll. All right, we'll
be back to wrap up hour number two on thirteen
Under the Zone, third and final hour of the program
here on Sports Radio AM thirteen Under the Zone.

Speaker 1 (01:02:39):
Craig Wait.

Speaker 2 (01:02:41):
Alongside the producer Jay Carmon, Glad to have you with
us up until five o'clock this afternoon, at which time
we give away to Fox Sports Radio to Camino and Rich.
But glad to have you with us right now. Coming
up in a few minutes, we'll here from March manning
a long orange quarterback, coming off the win of Oklahoma
and getting ready for Kentucky.

Speaker 1 (01:02:59):
How about some.

Speaker 2 (01:03:00):
Jerry Jones sound Jerry you may remember, usually because because
he's Jerry and he wants to do it, kind of
does his own little media session following Cowboy games. He'll
be down in the tunnel outside the locker room at
home games, or he might be in a different spot

(01:03:24):
on the road, depending on what's available on that.

Speaker 1 (01:03:27):
Sort of stuff.

Speaker 2 (01:03:27):
Well, he didn't do one of those after the loss
to the Carolina Panthers. He did, however, do his regular
Tuesday morning appearance on their flagship station, Dallas one O
five to three the Fan, And that was the first
thing he addressed, was missing out on that media appearance

(01:03:48):
and his overall thoughts on the loss to Carolina.

Speaker 12 (01:03:51):
Now that Carolina set up over there is a long
long way from the area sit in, and that was
as much of it as anything. Secondly, yes, there was
a frustration because we had such a good chance to
win that game at the end.

Speaker 6 (01:04:13):
And I thought it could go our way.

Speaker 12 (01:04:15):
After basically holding the lead yet physically.

Speaker 6 (01:04:20):
Getting pushed around a little bit out there, all of that.

Speaker 12 (01:04:24):
Probably didn't make me just be all that urgent to
get over there and visit with everybody. And I've done
that from time to time. This is the first one
of those, especially those road games.

Speaker 2 (01:04:35):
Yeah, probably won't be the last either.

Speaker 1 (01:04:37):
I did that.

Speaker 2 (01:04:38):
He was asked if this lost stings a little more
since the Cowboys were actually favored.

Speaker 1 (01:04:43):
In this game.

Speaker 6 (01:04:45):
Yes, very much.

Speaker 12 (01:04:46):
I'm just like you. I go up and down that
schedule as well. The reality of it though, and I
don't think it's unique to me either. Is I realized
how much parody we've got. The real thing about it
is on any of these games, on any of these times,

(01:05:09):
as you evolved through a season, any of these teams
can beat each other.

Speaker 6 (01:05:14):
And that's the real world.

Speaker 12 (01:05:15):
That's what makes this thing so interesting.

Speaker 6 (01:05:18):
And you don't have.

Speaker 12 (01:05:19):
Any real You shouldn't have any gimmis on that schedule.
If you're not getting in there about five hundred in
the NFL, you really need to also check your whole card,
because it's set up for you.

Speaker 6 (01:05:32):
To be five hundred. With the way we draft.

Speaker 12 (01:05:35):
The way we trade, the lower teams are always the
first to get the best shot at the best players.

Speaker 6 (01:05:42):
The way this.

Speaker 12 (01:05:42):
Whole thing is set up from a structure standpoint. Then
the thing that changes that as much as anything, of course,
is a lot of times teams get.

Speaker 6 (01:05:55):
On quite a run. They get on a run with
some good quarterbacking.

Speaker 12 (01:06:00):
We've got good quarterbacking, but they get on the run
with good quarterbacking and they change up what parody normally is.
I think I saw today we're with Romo and with
Dak Prescott. I think I may be off by one,
but we're either the sixth or seventh winning his team

(01:06:23):
in all the NFL over their tenure, which is almost
twenty years to give you an idea of how closest
thing is. Yet we're disappointed because we don't have a
good record of appearance in the playoffs, which is really
what it's all about. Nobody really does roll back and
look at the fact that you're at the top of
the league and winning percentages winning games. That's not the

(01:06:46):
way you look at it. Look at it on a
season by season, playoff time of year by playoff time
of year that says it should be I love it.
And consequently, you can have some teams that might not
have had consistency throughout the years of that particular year,
and that team can step up there and win that
Super Bowl.

Speaker 2 (01:07:06):
Okay, he mentioned Tony Romo, and you've heard him in
the past speak of how sick it was. He was
about the fact that he never got to see Tony
Romo play in a Super Bowl. And he was asked
if he's starting to get that same feeling about here's
Dak Prescott ten years in not having yet been to

(01:07:28):
a Super Bowl.

Speaker 12 (01:07:29):
Yeah, he's had great We've had great quarterback play for
ten years, and we had it with Romo for ten years.
And the word wasn't a mistake. The word was it
was unfortunate because you were sitting there and what happened
during those spans is that you were the fifth, sixth
winning his team in the NFL during those spans when

(01:07:51):
they played there. Yet their playoff records are not in
that category of when I say their playoff records, the
Cowboys playoff records, not theirs. Not completely on their shoulders,
but you realize a chance missed. I'm a big believer
in getting up around the rim and because of the

(01:08:16):
ambiguity of availability injuries, because of the very uh if
you will, the way the ball bounces, Like I said,
we're fifth or six and all wins over that period
of time, and yet at the same time, we're disappointed
because we have smelled the Super Bowl and that's frustrating,

(01:08:37):
that's disappointing. With Dyk, we've had some outstanding teams had
him early, had him with zuh and have had some
great offensive lines.

Speaker 6 (01:08:46):
That's been very.

Speaker 12 (01:08:49):
We've been very fortunate to have had the type of
protections and running games that we've had generally during Dakh's career,
and that's great, good stuff. And consequently, and we've also
had days when we had trouble stopping the run during
that time and I'm not being facetious, but we have

(01:09:10):
had As a matter of fact, we get down to
these playoff games, the thing that usually is our tiele's
heel is that we can't stop that run.

Speaker 6 (01:09:21):
And that's believe it or not.

Speaker 12 (01:09:23):
That's what we're addressing and what we've been trying to
address on our defensive.

Speaker 2 (01:09:28):
Front, which brings us to Matt Eberflus, the Cowboys defensive coordinator,
and Chay is asked, is Eberflus the guy, and if so,
what do you say to fans who are growing tired
of the fact that the Cowboy defense didn't getting it done.

Speaker 12 (01:09:42):
He's been in that, he's had tremendous experience. He's dealt
with adversity with a long record, not only with us,
but with his tenure at Chicago and Anneapolis, and he's
had some great successes, had some very great successes.

Speaker 6 (01:10:02):
But he's had his tail.

Speaker 12 (01:10:03):
Kid, that's who I want in the foxhold with me,
because there's no such thing as having all the answers,
And so I jumped at it when I saw we
had a chance to get him. I still feel as
strongly as I did today. We brought him in here.
And these things that we're dealing with here are not

(01:10:30):
one two major things. There are a lot of little
things that you can't address and get right, and you
can adjust the nuances of them. And for instance, the
other day, we couldn't stop the run, yet we were
within a possession. If we'd drive that ball at him

(01:10:51):
the game, we got a good chance to win it.
We were up all day for the most part. And
so there's a lot of ways to win football games
and closes dealing with nuances there that we can adjust
and change, and you do just and you do it,
you do change, and there will be that what's interesting

(01:11:12):
is that the way the game panned out was very
very on point with the way that our coaches planned
for the game to pan out. We just thought we
could get more stops. We thought we could physically do
a better job with them, and they were able to

(01:11:32):
scheme us a little bit that to their credit, but
we were in that game close enough. What I think,
I don't want to take too long on the central
but Carolina is easy to overlook as a formidable matchup
with us. They match up right good against where we

(01:11:54):
need the work, and so they were tough, tough opponent.
As far as the other day, We'll almost closed it off.

Speaker 2 (01:12:03):
He said, I don't want to go too long in
his hanswer. I think it's too late for that, Jerry.
That was two minutes in when he did that. All Right,
So you've heard from the Cowboys owner, president and general manager.
A little later on we'll hear some more from Ryan Shottnaber,
the head coach. But up next we'll hear from arch Manning,
the long orange quarterback on thirteen under the zone.

Speaker 1 (01:12:24):
Yay's the fireman.

Speaker 4 (01:12:25):
It's his name.

Speaker 2 (01:12:26):
It's also the King. George Strait here on a Texan
Tuesday on thirteen hunder the zone. Hey, let's hear from
the quarterback Arch Manning of the Long Horns his media
session yesterday. First of all, he was asked about how
fired up he was and the entire sideline was during
that Ryan Nibblett seventy five yard pump retterm for a touchdown.

Speaker 7 (01:12:49):
Yeah, I was fired No one deserves it more than Ryan.

Speaker 5 (01:12:53):
He practices so hard and such a good guy, so
I was really excited for him.

Speaker 2 (01:12:58):
One thing we've seen Arch do quite a bit, even
when he was struggling earlier in the season, but he
did it really well on Saturday is to be able
to make the throw on the run. And he was
asked if his high school experience it is a door
him in in New Orleans, helped make it a little
more natural for him to throw on the run.

Speaker 10 (01:13:18):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (01:13:18):
Anytime you can, you know, extend players, get the receivers
more time to get open. It's hard to cover a
guy for that long, so I know it's tough to
defend and you know kind of know when and not
to do that.

Speaker 4 (01:13:33):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:13:34):
All right, So that long, tried and true question for
a guy who's getting better and better every week. Is
the game slowing quote unquote slowing down for him.

Speaker 7 (01:13:43):
I think we're playing well as a team right now.

Speaker 5 (01:13:45):
I think we won the game in all three phases
and got to continue to build that and have it
as momentum moving forward.

Speaker 2 (01:13:53):
So how does he replicate what happened on Saturday? I
think it starts with practice and in preparation. I think
we had a really good week of practice last week.
It's almost like you want to practice every week, like
coming off a loss with that motivation, so got to
continue to build that. Longhorns were down remember six' three
To oklahoma at the? Half Did sark have a special
message for the.

Speaker 5 (01:14:12):
Team, YEAH i think he was just trying to stress
to continue to do what we're. Doing we all felt
confident at. Halftime we just got to start. Clicking limit
the self inflicted wounds and keep.

Speaker 2 (01:14:24):
GOING i found out, that you, know they people are
now comfortable with calling them. SIWs now the self inflicted?

Speaker 3 (01:14:31):
Wounds is that a page out Of saban's Book The
non Offensive?

Speaker 2 (01:14:34):
Touchdowns? Yeah, yeah, yeah knots nots and then THE siw
is the self inflicted. Wounds sart talked at length last
week about having more success on first, down and we
talked about how first and second down determines how long
that third down number, is and so the Long worns
did a better job on first down that helped them

(01:14:57):
convert ten out of fourteen on third.

Speaker 5 (01:15:00):
Downs, yeah it's huge when you can get first and
second down wins to make it a little bit easier
on you and third. DOWN i feel like the weeks
before that we were living in a third and you,
know a, Lot so it's a little bit more manageable
in those third and you, know four to.

Speaker 2 (01:15:16):
Sixes you. Know another thing That sark had mentioned About
arch is that he's gotten better at understanding the pass
rush is, coming but not eyeing the pass rush as
much as keeping his eyes downfield and the quarterback Of.

Speaker 5 (01:15:31):
Greece, yeah it's tough to in practice because you Get
scott looks and you don't, uh you don't get hit in.
Practice BUT i think just continue to trust some guys
up front and trust the play, call keep eyes, downfield and.

Speaker 7 (01:15:45):
Just continue to build on that each.

Speaker 2 (01:15:46):
Week you Heard Ethan burke last hour talk About Nick
brooks development on the offensive front since he's lined up
opposite in a couple of, times and Uh arch was
asked About brooks impact on the continuity of perform mormants
of the old.

Speaker 5 (01:16:00):
Line, YEAH i just continue to get close to those.
Guys Nick brooks is a really talented, player and he's
only going to get better and. Better just kinda stay
with him and keep. Going true, freshman how about his?
Development you, know he's a guy that he's going to
play hard and brings juice no matter. What he might
mess up a, player get, beat but he's going to
bring you the next, play WHICH i really respect about.

Speaker 2 (01:16:19):
Him coming out of The florida game Where manning with
sacks six times and the offensive line really, struggled one
of the observations one of the captain obvious things, was,
well he's got to get the ball out. Quicker he's
just got To he's got to throw the. Ball he's
kind of it's easier said than. Done, however you, know
getting an opportunity to get the ball out quicker does
make a.

Speaker 1 (01:16:39):
Difference, YEAH i, MEAN i owe.

Speaker 5 (01:16:40):
You they do a lot on, defense and they're they're
really good up, front so getting the ball of playmakers was,
important get them in space and kind of just getting
completions to get.

Speaker 2 (01:16:50):
GOING i think everybody has seen By, now the touchdown
pass That DeAndre moore was not run exactly as it
was called or as it was. Scripted in, fact more
kind of had to improvise a little bit to get
open and wide open in the back of the end.
Zone so what are the keys for the wide receivers
extending these off script?

Speaker 5 (01:17:11):
Plays obviously run run the first route and then there's
always a second round off that find find, grass find,
space and get.

Speaker 2 (01:17:19):
Open so he had a chance get his feet wet
as the starting quarterback in this game for the first.

Speaker 5 (01:17:24):
Time what did it mean to? Him, yeah obviously the
win was most. Important we went To dallas to win the.
Game that was the most important. Thing but just playing
together as a team and having fun and in that
environment that's a special.

Speaker 4 (01:17:35):
Game so it was a lot of.

Speaker 2 (01:17:36):
Fun and it came in a week where he drew
a lot of. Criticism there was a lot of conversation
around himself as well as the. Program so the question
is is it realistic to expect to be able to
block out all of that kind of. NOISE i feel
LIKE i try.

Speaker 5 (01:17:51):
To do my best in blocking out the, noise and
then you get one hundred text. Messages keep blocking out
the noise like there must there must be a lot of,
noise so, YEAH i try my.

Speaker 2 (01:18:02):
Best some of that noise was That New York times
slash article for The athletic about is the college football's first,
flop and he was asked what he thought about or
had he seen that. Article, YEAH i didn't know. THAT
i GUESS i do.

Speaker 6 (01:18:18):
Now.

Speaker 5 (01:18:20):
Yeah, NO i, mean, LOOK i wasn't playing well AND i.

Speaker 2 (01:18:26):
Am i'm going to continue to get.

Speaker 5 (01:18:27):
Better but you know everyone has their own, opinion and
you know that's that it's good About. America so you
get to freedom, speech so it doesn't bother.

Speaker 2 (01:18:37):
Me, yeah and that goes For Michael taff's reaction to
the outside noise as.

Speaker 1 (01:18:41):
Well, YEAH i didn't see that.

Speaker 2 (01:18:42):
EITHER i think it's it's important.

Speaker 12 (01:18:46):
To not.

Speaker 2 (01:18:48):
Like we won a.

Speaker 5 (01:18:49):
Game, yeah but you, know there's a lot of work to,
do AND i Think michael's a really good.

Speaker 2 (01:18:54):
Leader he's the leader of this.

Speaker 5 (01:18:56):
Team but you, know you can't ride the highs and
you gotta stay even and keep.

Speaker 2 (01:19:02):
Going it's an old cliche shade phrase about whether your
win or, lose the next week's practice has to be
like your practicing coming off a, loss even if you
won the. Game And arch has heard that. Before, yeah
we got. TO i Mean, kentucky they're coming off a, bye.

Speaker 5 (01:19:19):
They got they got a lot to, prove and we got,
to you, know take this like this's most important.

Speaker 2 (01:19:26):
Game this is THE Sc championship. Game so, yeah so
approach it like, that and that means taking that next
step for the.

Speaker 5 (01:19:34):
Offense, yeah continue to get, better not look so far in.
Advances attack tomorrow's. Practice tuesday is a big day for.
Us so just continue to get, better get more connected
as a, group and go from.

Speaker 2 (01:19:45):
There arch is a quarterback and the offensive game overall
is obviously going to be better if the running game is.
Going When Travan weisner twenty two carries ninety four yards
and other guys chip in as. Well arch had his
own big rule as. Well that helped seal the deal as.
Well so you, know in talking about, that how big

(01:20:07):
a shot in the arm was having that effective ground. Game,
yeah it felt.

Speaker 5 (01:20:11):
Good anytime you could run the, ball it opens up.
Everything and So i'm really proud of the upfront And trey.
Runs trey's running is, real so fired up to have
him going full.

Speaker 2 (01:20:23):
FORCE i mentioned this yesterday that The longhorns took the
second half kickoff in march seventy five yards and fourteen.
Plays they took the first seven minutes and eleven seconds
off the clock before the touchdown pass To DeAndre. Moore
then the defense forced to three and. Out then the

(01:20:45):
offense march sixty five YARDS i believe it was in
eleven plays and wound up with a field. Goal and
that went all of a sudden from down six to
three at they have to up thirteen to six going
into the fourth.

Speaker 1 (01:20:56):
Quarter big big.

Speaker 2 (01:20:58):
Point they had the ball for thirteen minutes and twenty
six seconds in the third, quarter compared to a minu
at thirty four for The. Sooner So arch was asked
as he ever held the ball for that long in a.

Speaker 1 (01:21:12):
Game, yeah not.

Speaker 2 (01:21:13):
MUCH i felt.

Speaker 7 (01:21:14):
GOOD i felt good being out.

Speaker 5 (01:21:16):
There something about that game was special And i'm glad
to be a part of.

Speaker 2 (01:21:19):
It, Okay so next up was again back to that
touchdown pass To DeAndre. Moore and, again you, know receivers
have to do different things, sometimes like he, mentioned run
the first. Route if there's somebody, there you make the,
adjustment you find a way to get. Open and he was,
wide wide open in the back of the end. Zone

(01:21:40):
so he was asked about that the design coming off
script to Find DeAndre moore for the.

Speaker 5 (01:21:48):
Touchdown, yeah that wasn't the route at, all but you,
know you, know sometimes you just got to make. Plays
and he did a hell of a job there just
Finding grass AND i saw him.

Speaker 1 (01:21:59):
And throwing the.

Speaker 2 (01:22:00):
Ball there was a plus at a minus With Parker.
Livingston the minus was a misconnection With livingston in the end. Zone,
yeah you, know stuff.

Speaker 5 (01:22:09):
Happens you, know you can't always you're always gonna be perfect.
Time i've Missed parker on a few touchdowns this, year
so stuff.

Speaker 2 (01:22:17):
Happens we'll get them. Back the positive the plus sided
that was he Hit livingstone on that huge third down
pass coming off the goal line in the third quarter
at the, boundary And livingston made a heck of a,
catch But manning put it in a spot where Only
livingston was going to be able to get to, it
not the. Defender so that was a, big big point as.

(01:22:40):
Well and then finally there was the celebration laid in
the game after he slid.

Speaker 1 (01:22:46):
Down and he's kind of.

Speaker 2 (01:22:48):
Waving a little bit over there to that north end,
zone which by that POINT i should point, out and
this is one of the great phenomenon of The TEXAS ou.
Game from the Log warn, Perspective saturday would be. Great
from The oklahoma, perspective it would be on days When oklahoma.

(01:23:08):
Wins but the phenomenon is the same when it becomes
apparent certainly by mid fourth, quarter if not. Earlier one
side of the. Stadium this, is you, know because of
the dynamic of the entire north end of the field
from the fifty yard line all the way wrapped around

(01:23:29):
the north end zone is burnt orange because that's The
texas side of. It and then the other, side the
south end from the fifty yard line down beyond the
end zone where the tunnel is is all in. Red
that's crimson and. Cream but whichever team is up by
probably mid fourth court unless it's really a tight, game

(01:23:51):
if a team is up, significantly and in the Three
texas victories it's been. Significant it was forty nine to
nothing in twenty twenty. TWO i was there for. That
you are where were you? CITING i was around like.

Speaker 3 (01:24:05):
The twenty yard line near the top of the lower.
Bowl amazing.

Speaker 2 (01:24:08):
Scene, okay very. Good and then of course After oklahoma
one in twenty twenty. Three texas came back and one
thirty four to three last, year and then it winds
up being twenty three six this. Year in other, words
long warns have kept The sooners out of the end
z and for eight straight quarters in for twelve of
the sixteen quarters played over the past four, years three

(01:24:29):
of the last four years in those in those. Games
so when that happens and one team starts to really
gain that upper, hand the other team's fans start to
file out. Early they don't want to stick around to
watch the other team. CELEBRATE i don't blame. THEM i
Mean texas fans do. It oklahoma fans do it too
much to Do, yeah, yeah you might as well hit the, fairgrounds,

(01:24:51):
Right and folks don't want to stick around and see
the other team celebrate and everybody passing around the golden.

Speaker 3 (01:24:58):
Hat and they don't want to stick a out and
hear the other side of the stadium yeah, celebrate.

Speaker 2 (01:25:03):
Yeah, Right so they start to filter. Out so one
of the great, sites always from A texas, perspective is
looking toward the south end zone and seeing the glint
the reflection of, sunlight often unoccupied aluminum bleacher seat And
it's a lot of that toward the end because the
vast majority Of oklahoma fans file. Out same thing happens

(01:25:25):
on the north end If oklahoma is assured a victory at.

Speaker 1 (01:25:28):
A certain point in the fourth.

Speaker 2 (01:25:29):
Quarter but toward that end was When arch was waving
after the twenty nine yard running and he was asked
what inspired him to bring out that little wave celebration
there toward the end of the.

Speaker 5 (01:25:41):
Game, yeah that's just the emotion of the. GAME i
have a lot of respect for ou of that. DEFENSE
i THOUGHT i was sore last, week but see him
a tear play that was.

Speaker 7 (01:25:51):
Inspiring he's a really good player and that was just.

Speaker 2 (01:25:54):
The emotion of the.

Speaker 5 (01:25:54):
Game that's not the kind of GUY i want to,
be but rivalry game AND.

Speaker 2 (01:25:59):
I was just waving at Our, yeah there you. Go
there's a way to go about, it all. Right so
there it is from the quarterback Arts. Manny coming, up
we'll here's some more From Brian, schottenheimer The cowboys head,
coach and how they get back on. Track when we,
Continue i'm thirteen under the zone of the irradio app.

Speaker 1 (01:26:16):
On thirteen hundred to the. Zone what are you rolling
this back? With right?

Speaker 3 (01:26:21):
Here this Is Flatland, cavalry who started At Texas tech
and had become a pretty popular country.

Speaker 2 (01:26:26):
Band, okay all, right very. Good let's hear from The
cowboys head Coach Brian. Schottenheimer and this was about trying
to get better on. Defense there was a lot of
conversation about the defense because the, defense quite, frankly just
hadn't been up to. It so the question, was how

(01:26:50):
can they make it so that the offense doesn't have
to be perfect every time when the defense is.

Speaker 1 (01:26:55):
Struggling, well, Listen i'll start with.

Speaker 9 (01:26:57):
THIS i, mean when the defense got the three and
out in the fourth quarter and we got the ball
at the forty six yard, LINE i had no doubt
in my mind that we were going to go win
that football. Game and the first play is of screen
that you, know they kind of string it out and
they make the tackle and then you, know the next
two calls they force a check. Down and but but
we had our. CHANCES i, mean, hey if we go
three for, four four for four in the red, zone

(01:27:18):
which is what we've, done then we're not even having this.
Conversation so you're not going to find anybody in the
offensive room that feels like the defense is letting us.
DOWN i truly believe that this is a team, game
and there's no reason we shouldn't go four for four
in the red. Zone we've Proven we've gone three for,
four five for, five whatever it's, been we've done. That

(01:27:38):
so you, know we need to focus on doing our,
job and special teams need to need to do their.
Job and there's plenty of things to clean, up not
just on the defensive side of the.

Speaker 1 (01:27:48):
Ball, okay all, right with that being the.

Speaker 2 (01:27:51):
Case part of the reason that The cowboys had the
struggles and weren't able to have the ball control Of
carolina Because carolina was able to run the football and
The cowboys were. Not so what did he see on
tape as the reason that the run game wasn't?

Speaker 9 (01:28:09):
Clicking LIKE i, said there was a lot of. Penetration
it's a good it's a big physical.

Speaker 1 (01:28:14):
Group you.

Speaker 9 (01:28:14):
Know they Got Ashan, robinson they Got Drick, brown AND
i felt like our combinations and communication weren't.

Speaker 2 (01:28:21):
GREAT i thought it WASN'T id.

Speaker 9 (01:28:22):
Issues the IDs were, fine but we didn't communicate it
up and down the. Line there were the times that
we were targeted and maybe not all working in the same.
Direction but the biggest thing was we didn't give the
backs a lot of opportunity to press the. Hole some
of IT i think was schematically our design as a.
Staff you, know we need to look at. That you,
know next, time we're going to play another read and

(01:28:43):
react front here in.

Speaker 1 (01:28:44):
A couple of.

Speaker 9 (01:28:44):
Weeks and BUT i, mean that's a. Defense i'm going
to give them. Credit you, know they Held miami to
nineteen Yards. Russian they held us the thirty one Yards.
RUSSIAN i, mean it's a very very good front and
that's not our. Standard and so you, know we have
to adjust. It and it starts with us as a
coach and staff.

Speaker 2 (01:29:00):
First all, Right next, up the recurring issues with the
difficulties for the defense involve the. Miscommunications we hear that
seemingly every. Week we here the players talk about. It
we've Heard shot And eimer talk about. It Jerry jones
talk about it as. Well miscommunicational. Defense it's not all,

(01:29:21):
miscommunication but there are some recurring issues that go with,
that and it's been like that for the six weeks
of the season at this, point says the head.

Speaker 9 (01:29:30):
Coach, yeah it should not be happening at the LEVEL
i think you, know there was there was a call
that you, know came in a little late the other
day AND i had to burn a time out And
fluce knows, that and he AND i have discussed. That
and as you, know the changing of personnel makes coordinators.
WORK i try to do it to defensive coordinators all the,
time all sub personnels in, late knowing that it kind

(01:29:51):
of puts them up against.

Speaker 2 (01:29:52):
It but we have to communicate.

Speaker 9 (01:29:54):
Better and, again are closed calls getting, Made, yes they're getting.

Speaker 2 (01:29:59):
Made close, LEFT i closed. Right that's how you set the.

Speaker 9 (01:30:01):
Front but in terms of when people change strengths and
things like, THAT i do feel like it's not being
communicated to the standard of a championship defense where guys
are all on the same. Page and that's that's, problematic
and that starts with us as a.

Speaker 2 (01:30:16):
Staff why you.

Speaker 9 (01:30:18):
Got to ask a questions, Why like we didn't sit
in the meetings today and just be, like, yeah we
got to do this better get. It, no it's, Why,
well why is it? Happening and so you come up
with a list of why it's. Happening, okay, great, okay
to the left of.

Speaker 2 (01:30:29):
That board or to the right of that.

Speaker 9 (01:30:30):
BOARD i guess is a list Of, okay these are the,
solutions so that doesn't happen. Anymore and then you prepare
those things and that's Your wednesday install with the, guys
and you start. There and what we have to, do
especially on the defensive side of the, ball is, adjustin
tighten up ten or fifteen. Percent you can't change one hundred.

(01:30:50):
Percent we don't need to change one hundred. Percent we
do good, things but we have to tighten up ten
or fifteen. Percent and that's what we're going to. Do
and it's going to be the ten or fifteen percent
we think gives us the best chance to.

Speaker 1 (01:31:01):
Win all.

Speaker 2 (01:31:02):
Right and then, finally because it has been discussed and
discussed and discussed and brought up recurring the issues with
the defense excuse folks are asking lots of questions obviously
About Matt eberfluss's defensive, coordinator and is he getting the job?
Done why is he not getting the job? Done why

(01:31:22):
are the reasons why the defense isn't getting the job?
Done that sort of. Thing, so as a resort of
the result of, That schottenheimers asked if he would be
spending more time in defensive coaching meetings this week WITH
I reflus and the staff because of what has.

Speaker 9 (01:31:40):
HAPPENED i spend more time in all the rooms than
you would. THINK i, met you, know at length with
the defense this. Morning that's not Because i'm. Panicked that's
BECAUSE i know THAT i can offer solutions And, okay
well What's carolina? Thinking, well why are they doing? This
why are they maybe running those type of? Plays and
here's HOW i would attack you and things like. That

(01:32:02):
it's not the. Question it's to educate them from an offensive,
standpoint to make sure we're on the same.

Speaker 2 (01:32:08):
Page to ask the question.

Speaker 9 (01:32:11):
Why, okay like we talked about, earlier why you know
that's part of your job as that. Coach, well why
is that the right? Call or why is that technique being?
Used or why is this guy in that? Spot that's your?
Job and AGAIN i think that you, know the one
THING i love About MATT I reflus is he welcomes

(01:32:31):
it and he you, know, Look i've Been, Matt i've
been a, coordinator, man And i've been where people are
calling you out and saying you don't know how to,
coach and, man this guy's the worst coach. Industry matti
Reflu is a damn good football coach and we have
to perform. Better but But i've been him and so
part of part of me being in there is to
help as an, asset to tell HIM i believe in.

Speaker 2 (01:32:52):
HIM i understand what he's going.

Speaker 9 (01:32:53):
Through it, sucks it's no, fun and, uh we're going
to ride this thing out and again we'll play. Better
we really, will all.

Speaker 2 (01:33:02):
Right so there it Is ryan schot number believing in
his defensive, coordinator believing In Matt, eberflus and that it
can get done, better get done, Soon, jake because you
got The Washington commanders coming in and even though there
was the fumbles that hurt, him they were able to
move the football quite a. Bit my fantasy football team

(01:33:26):
benefited From jade And daniels in his three touchdown. Passes
he can throw the ball and he can find.

Speaker 3 (01:33:31):
Targets, YEAH i mean uncharacteristic in terms of the. Turnovers
BUT i think The commander's young receivers have really come.
Along obviously they Missed terry, McLaurin, who after holding out
for a lot of the, offseason has found himself dinged.
Up he MISSED i think three games in the last three.
Years has already missed three games this year with now

(01:33:51):
what they're calling a quad and a core, issue so
his stat is obviously up in the. Air they don't
think he's going to have to go ON, ir but
he might miss This cowboys. Game commander is going to
be relying on young receivers that coming into the season
and maybe wouldn't have raised your eyebrow too, much But Jalen,
Lane luc, McCaffrey they're developing and they could have a
game Like Luther burden did if The cowboys don't show

(01:34:12):
up those communication.

Speaker 2 (01:34:13):
Issues for, sure they've got to be better in being
able to do. That, hey before we get to the,
BREAK i wanted to give away another pair of, tickets
or at least give you a chance to win a
pair of tickets to See Alice cooper And Judas priest
because this goes during the. Week every day we have
the deal where you have to remember a certain keyword

(01:34:36):
to be in a drawing on that specific. Day so
we're giving away a pair of tickets every day throughout
the course of the. Week Alice cooper And Judas priest
are appearing On october twenty. Fifth was that a week From?
SATURDAY i guess it is right week From. Saturday that's, right,
okay at the Big saturday night show at Their Germania Insurance.

Speaker 3 (01:34:59):
Amphitheater, yeah you could listen to The longhorns on the
way because That Mississippi state game will be in the.

Speaker 2 (01:35:03):
Afternoon, yeah, yeah will. Be we don't have a tie
a start time, yet do. We.

Speaker 3 (01:35:07):
NO i think it's just between two thirty and three.

Speaker 2 (01:35:10):
Fifteen, yeah it's one of it's going to be an afternoon.

Speaker 1 (01:35:12):
Game But.

Speaker 2 (01:35:15):
October twenty fifth is When Alice cooper And Judas priest
are appearing at Their Germania Insurance. Amphitheater that, is you,
know out AT. Coda so here's how you can really
have an inside tracked winning start off by downloading The iHeartRadio.
App if you don't already have, it it's, free it's

(01:35:36):
easy to, do so you start with. That then once
you have it downloading on your, smartphone you just do a.
Search this is really. Easy you do a search FOR
am thirteen under the zone in your little magnifying glass
or your search bar, window whatever it. Is you SEARCH
am thirteen under the. Zone it pops up just like.
That there's two. Buttons there's this white button that's kind

(01:35:59):
of trying a. Shape that's just to listen to the
programming that goes on here all the. Time but for
the purposes of the, contest the important one is that
little red button with a white. Microphone that's our talk back,
microphone and you can use that to talk to us
about you, know leave us up to thirty second voice
message to talk about any. Topic but for the purposes
of this, contest to try to win tickets For Alice

(01:36:21):
cooper And Judis, price you hit that red button with
a white, microphone and then you leave us a message
with the keyword that you heard on the. Radio today's
keyword is got go. Ot you can probably figure out
at least part of the pattern here because yesterday was
you and this is got you got yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:36:41):
Mail i'm waiting on the edge of my. Seat find
we'll find.

Speaker 2 (01:36:44):
Out, okay all, right you, know don't? You you know
what this, is don't? You I'm i'm speaking for our. Audience,
okay someone has To well, anyway the keyword is, got
so again you what you do is download the iHeartRadio.
App you SEARCH am thirteen under the. Zone you'll see
a red button with a white. Microphone you can leave
us a message up to thirty. Seconds you don't even

(01:37:06):
need to leave the thirty singing you to, SAY i was
listening To craigway. SHOW i like to be in the
drawing for those tickets For Alice cooper And Judas. Priest
and the keyword today is. Got that's, it and you're
in the. Drawing in, fact you'll circumvent a lot of
the folks in getting in. That if you are making
us a preset, too that'll help kind of get you
to the front of the line and increase your chances of.

Speaker 1 (01:37:28):
Winning so there it, is all.

Speaker 2 (01:37:29):
Right we'll be back to wrap up today's edition the
program right here On Sports RADIO am thirteen under The
zone and The irradio.

Speaker 1 (01:37:34):
App getting ready to wrap this one.

Speaker 2 (01:37:38):
Up we had somebody on the text line had text
me who texted in was talking about when we played
the SoundBite Of arch, waving said Y arch was waving
At texas fans Like jerry was flipping Off cowboys, fans
winking that'd be kind of like The Oklahoma sooners who were,
saying you, know when they do the horns, down they're
just doing it to their own.

Speaker 1 (01:37:55):
Fans the horns down after they, win.

Speaker 2 (01:37:57):
Right, yeah their own version of the hook them. Horn,
yeah there you.

Speaker 1 (01:38:01):
Go you said there that we had a question on
the talk, Back.

Speaker 2 (01:38:05):
Yeah we did you want to?

Speaker 1 (01:38:06):
Hear, Sure, Hey, craig what.

Speaker 13 (01:38:09):
Kind of a fine line do you have to walk
as the voice of The. Longhorns it's obvious when you're
really excited And texas makes a great, play you feel
the excitement and the. Tension but what kind of what
kind of a line do you have to walk where
you can't be too? Critical you can be you hold,
them you have to hold the team accountable for their,

(01:38:31):
actions but you can't be too.

Speaker 2 (01:38:33):
Critical what kind of a Fine, okay what kind of
a fine? Line, yeah and there's an, example by the,
way you got thirty seconds to get hold in before
it does.

Speaker 1 (01:38:40):
That BUT i appreciate the.

Speaker 2 (01:38:41):
Comment, UH i don't really think of it as a fine.
Line what it is is you hit on it. Exactly
you hold the team, Accountable you, say what it is
my responsibility to transmit the message of what happened on
a given play or what is going. ON i think

(01:39:02):
folks who listen to the broadcast understand who it. IS
i would like to see when the football game if
they didn't have any clue. THAT i don't THINK i
would be doing my job as voice of Law worns
by the same. Token there is a level of objectivity
that you have to. Have you have to give the
other team credit when they make a. Play is one

(01:39:22):
Thing Mac brown always told. Me he, Said i'm never
going to have a problem with you giving the other
team credit for making a big play on a.

Speaker 1 (01:39:30):
Game you salute him for, that AND.

Speaker 2 (01:39:33):
I, do and you, know if they're not getting the job,
done you do say. It there are ways to say
things without just absolutely just eviscerating a player or a
team or. Whatever but you can to use your phrase
hold them accountable by, saying, well they you, know they

(01:39:56):
didn't get the job done Defensive it's what we said
in the game At. Florida they didn't get the job done.
Defensively in the offensive line didn't get the job. Done
that's holding them. Accountable that's talking about. It AND i
think that's the important thing to keep in. Mind you
want to paint an accurate picture of going on the
lines blur for folks when accuracy meets feelings and. Opinion,

(01:40:20):
okay so then it kind of clouds what could be
the proper judgment on just what exactly happened and what
exactly is getting done or not getting. DONE i think
that's the best way to go about, it to describe.
IT i love.

Speaker 3 (01:40:33):
That and one TIME i know we're running out of.
Time The mariners play by play Voice Aaron goldsman, said
it's like you're flying a. Plane you want the passengers
to know that you wanted to go to the same
destination that they. Do, yes but they also want to
trust you at the.

Speaker 2 (01:40:46):
Controls that's, right that's right to be able to tell
them exactly what's going. On so that's the CHARGE i
learned a long time. Ago Number one responsibility transmits the.
Message make sure folks understand what's going on on the
play and if you're screaming or, hollering or if you're,
analysts is screaming and hollering of the top of you Unfortunate
Roger wallace does none of.

Speaker 1 (01:41:07):
That then you're able to do your.

Speaker 2 (01:41:10):
Job then you can get excited within the framework of
that in transmitting the.

Speaker 1 (01:41:15):
MESSAGE i hope that explains it. There appreciate the question on.
That we'll be back with you.

Speaker 2 (01:41:21):
Tomorrow Tom leach's play by play voice of The Kentucky
wildcats will.

Speaker 1 (01:41:24):
Join us, tomorrow among.

Speaker 2 (01:41:26):
Others for the, Producer Jay, carman and thanks as well
again To Greg, Tepper Dave Campbells Texas Football. Magazine I'm
Craig Way cavino And Rich Fox Sports. Radio up, next
we'll visit with You marrow at Finn in at two.

Speaker 1 (01:41:37):
O'clock right, Here i'm thirteen under the.
