Speaker 1 (00:20):
We go spirally headlong into a Tuesday here in early December.
Good afternoon, everybody, welcome to the program here on Sports
Radio AM thirteen under the Zone on this Tuesday afternoon.
Glad to have you with us. My name is Craig Waite.
Thanks so much for joining us this afternoon. Much to
(00:41):
get to on the program. Today, we'll hear more on
this penultimate college football ranking day when the next last
college football playoff rankings are released at six o'clock tonight.
Have more on that's more analysis on that. We'll hear
(01:02):
more from Long Horns head coach Steve Sarkisian about that
as well. I know that many of you have said,
is he still on the campaign trail? And the answer
is a resounding yes. I think he did three or
four different national appearances. Yesterday, Paul Finebaum sec now he
(01:25):
was on with Colin Cowherd, and we're going to bring
you an excerpt of his conversation with Colin Cowherd about
why he feels a long wrns belonging the college football playoffs,
and we'll have that, but there are also some other
breakdown on that about teams that tonight should feel pretty
good about their situation and others that might be a
(01:48):
little bit restless. Toward that end, I think Ole Miss
can feel pretty comfortable that they're in. The question is
where they're in with the depart Trev Lane Kiffin. We're
gonna hear some comments from Lane Kiffin as well today
on the program. And there's basketball to discuss. Long worn
(02:09):
men in action Tomorrow night. ACC SEC Challenge Week is here.
There are actually games tonight involving the ACC against the
SEC dukes playing Florida and North Carolina's playing Kentucky. So
there's some there's some big matchups there, and of course
it extends through tomorrow. The men's side, women's side begins tomorrow,
(02:30):
but for the Texas women it'll be Thursday night. Both
the men and women will play at home. The men
tomorrow evening with a tip off in the eight to
fifteen to eight to twenty range against Virginia and the
women will play on Thursday evening at six o'clock against
North Carolina. So there are those matchups still to come
(02:54):
tomorrow and you'll hear both of these games, both of
those games here on thirteen under the Zone, so you'll
have those contests coming your way also, there's some other
college and pro football to discuss, and we'll certainly do that.
We're going to hear from on the basketball side, some
(03:18):
from Sean Miller, the Texas men's head coach, and a
little bit from Vic Schaefer. We'll hear more from Vic tomorrow.
We'll hear's some from Rory Harmon today, the long Orange
All American point guard. We'll hear from her as well.
We have inconceivable this hour, three o'clock hour. Greg Tepper,
the editor in chief Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine, joins
us for our weekly conversation about football, both of the
(03:39):
collegiate and high school variety here in the lone Star State.
So Tapp will join us in the three o'clock hour,
so we get a lot to get to on the program,
We of course include the program the man, the producer
sitting on the opposite side of the console from me.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
That would be Jay Herman Evan Ashty. This a little bit.
How's your fantasy team doing?
Speaker 3 (04:02):
We're in our playoffs start this week, Craig, do they wow?
If I win, I'm in. If I lose, it comes
down to the points four tiebreaker.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
Okay, okay, I got you. I did get a win.
I mean, I'm still in a three way tie for
first in our league. But we got a couple of
weeks left in the regular season and then we'll see
where it goes from there. There was Monday Night football
last night. I saw very little of it, the Patriots
handling the Giants. I did like the Patriots throw back
AFL uniforms. I liked that with the Patriot pat on
(04:35):
the side of that white helmet there with a striping
on the top, and then then the red, the bright
red jersey. Kind of like those better, certainly than when
they went to the flying Elvis on the side as
they called it for a while, and then the other
Patriot helmet.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
So like, I like, I like what they have going now.
I'm with you there.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
Had you watched, you and Linda would have meant would
have seen a great Manning Cast moment. And that was
on the unfortunate miss field goal temp by Young Lay
coup right. Danny DeVito was on there with Peyton and
Eli reacting, Oh, that's great.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
That had to be fun. That'd be fun.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
Did they get into any Danny versus Eli Jersey Mike's
debates about the stuff they're doing those Jersey Mike's commercials, not.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
That I heard, not that I heard.
Speaker 3 (05:19):
Granted, the rest of that game probably could have been
an email.
Speaker 1 (05:22):
Yeah, yeah, you're probably right about that. The College Football
conversation continues, and we'll hear from Sart.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
Coming up in a few minutes about this.
Speaker 1 (05:37):
But I should tell you Heather Dinnich, who covers it
about as thoroughly as anybody has been on it, and
she started it. She brought a brand new piece for
today where she said, just when you thought the twelveteen
college Football Playoff was a solution, that might be messier
than ever, I think we've all kind of come to
that conclusion, at least this season. She believes that a
(06:01):
five loss Duke that wins the ACC might still get
in the playoff.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
No way.
Speaker 3 (06:09):
She believes it that what does that needs James Madison loss?
Speaker 1 (06:14):
You need? No even with James Madison in the and
whoever wins the American she thinks Duke may still get
in over James Madison. The Duke lost to Tulane. Yeah,
but they're not James Madison, you know. She believes the
American champions getting in, right. I think that's that's a certainty,
but anyway she goes, she says five loss Duke can
(06:37):
win the ACC. Three of the four power conferences will
have championship games that feature rematches in Alabama might have
to beat Georgia a second time to stay in the field.
If both b YU and Texas techer and from the
Big twelve, someone currently in the top ten is out.
There are also still plenty of questions what will the
committee do? Will the Committee do anything with Ole Miss
(06:57):
after Lane Kiffin's departure. She doesn't believe will does Miami
game ground on Notre Dame which are the true bubble teams?
How the committee votes and Tuesday Night's fifth ranking will
be a strong indicator of how the twelve team field
will look on selection today, But it's not the final answer.
So she has her bubble watch, not Bubba Watch, bubble
(07:19):
watch in the SEC right now, she's got five teams
in Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Texas, A, and m
She adds right now, the Crimson Tide are the last
at large.
Speaker 2 (07:34):
Team in the field.
Speaker 1 (07:35):
Alabama will face Georgia in the SEC championship game, but
the committee could have a difficult decision if Alabama loses
and finishes as a three loss runner up.
Speaker 2 (07:44):
The Tide would have.
Speaker 1 (07:45):
Defeated Georgia during the regular season, but lost to the
Bulldogs in the championship game, and they're already in a
precarious position. How far Alabama drops could determine if the
SEC gets four or five teams in the field. Alabama
could finish as the Committee's highest ranked three loss team
and still be excluded from the playoff to make room
for a conference champion, as they were last year. A
(08:08):
Georgia win should lock up a first round buy on
the top four finished for the Bulldogs, while a loss
should still put them in position a host a first
round game. Georgia beat ole Miss, so it would be
surprising to see them drop below the Rebels with a loss.
Even though the Bulldogs would have one more defeat with
a thirty five ten drubbing of Texas also in its resume,
Georgia would still have enough resume.
Speaker 2 (08:29):
To finishes the committee's top two loss team.
Speaker 1 (08:31):
It will be interesting to see if Lane Kiffin's departure
affects the ranking of ole Miss. CFP protocol states the
Committee will consider quote other relevant factors, such as unavailability
of key players and coaches that may have affected a
team's performance during the season or likely will affect its
postseason performance. In quote, she adds at Old Miss won't
(08:54):
miss the playoff because Kiffin left for another job, but
it could get deemed a spot or two if the
commit he surmises the team won't be the same without.
Speaker 2 (09:02):
Him, and then are still in the mix.
Speaker 1 (09:06):
She has Texas the Long Orange will earn a promotion
Tuesday night, but the win against Texas A and M
and is unlikely to catapult them into the playoff. Texas
probably will be stuck behind Miami, in part because of
its lost to Florida, which Miami beat. Even if Texas
Tech knocks BYU out of the top twelve of the
win in the Big twelve championship game, bumping up both
Miami and Texas the Long Orange would still be excluded
(09:28):
from the field to make room for a conference champion.
If BYU and Alabama were knocked out with title game losses,
that still probably won't be enough for Texas to get
in the field, because even if Texas reaches number eleven
by default, it would still be excluded during the seating
process for a conference champion, So her take on it
is they're probably not getting in, even though they're going
(09:50):
to rise this week.
Speaker 2 (09:51):
Ones that are definitely out.
Speaker 1 (09:53):
Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Kentucky, Lsusissippi State, Missouri, South Carolina, Tennessee
and VANDERB. She's got Vanderbilt out, even she and many
others have heard believe Texas will jump Vanderbilt. A they
owned they head to head and win, and B they
have a win that Vanderbilt doesn't have.
Speaker 3 (10:11):
That win for Texas A And I do feel for Vanderbilt.
They had a difficult set of road losses. They lost
to two teams on the road, Alabama and Texas, who
have lost a combined one game at.
Speaker 2 (10:22):
Home in the last two years.
Speaker 3 (10:24):
Right, but I just don't think they have the wins
that Texas has. You combine that with the heads had
now when I'm curious, I don't know if you've gotten
to this yet or if we will.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
Where Heather Dnach has Notre.
Speaker 1 (10:34):
Dame, Well, I'm going to get to that. In the
Big Ten, she has Ohio State, Indiana, and Oregon in.
They're definitely in. Both Indiana and Ohio State are locks
even if they lose in the conference title. The Ducks
punctuated their resume with a respectable win at Washington and
should be secure in their playoff position, probably hosting a
first round game. Oregon could get a small boost this
(10:56):
week of Texas A and M drops behind it after
losing to Texas.
Speaker 2 (10:59):
Nobody still in the mix, so the rest of the
Big ten is out.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
Big Twelve definitely in Texas Tech Red Raiders will play
BYU in the Big twelve title game and have a
great case to be in the playoff regardless of the outcome.
Speaker 2 (11:11):
It's highly unlikely.
Speaker 1 (11:12):
The selection committee woul drop the Red Raiders out of
the field as a two lost Big Twelve runner up,
especially considering they have a regular season win against the
eventual conference champion.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
That's if B, why should B? Why you should beat them?
Speaker 1 (11:23):
It's also possible Texas Tech earns first round by as
a top four seat. If the Red Raiders win the
Big Twelve, the committee would then move them into the.
Speaker 2 (11:31):
Top four on Tuesday night.
Speaker 1 (11:32):
If Texas A and M falls out after it's lost
to Texas, still.
Speaker 2 (11:37):
As BYU in the mix.
Speaker 1 (11:39):
If BYU doesn't win the Big Twelve, it's unlikely to
earn an at large bit as the conference runner up
because Scugar's already are on the bubble and would be
eliminated during the seating process if the playoff were today.
It's not impossible, though, If Alabama finishes as a three
loss SEC runner up, it could at least open the
door for debate. It would could be as simple as
number ten Alabama number eleven be why you flipping positions
(12:03):
on selection day?
Speaker 2 (12:04):
That's this coming Sunday.
Speaker 1 (12:06):
The difference would be that b why you lost to
Texas Tech twice? And Alabama would have defeated Georgia the
eventual SEC champ once and it was on the road.
If BYU wins the Big twelve the ideal scenario for
the conference because it would have two teams in the
playoff everybody.
Speaker 2 (12:21):
Else is out.
Speaker 1 (12:22):
ACC Duke in Virginia She's got would be in two
TBD to be determined. Now this is where again's interesting.
The ACC championship game will feature Virginia Duke, and if
five loss Duke wins, it's possible the a SEC is
(12:43):
excluded from the playoff. If Virginia wins, it will represent
the league in the playoff, as the two lost Cavaliers
are ranked in the top twenty and no, Miami did
not play Duke or Virginia during the regular season. Duke
lost to Tulane, which is in the top group of
five playoff contenders and will reach the playoff if it wins.
The American Duke also lost to Yukon, and it has
(13:05):
already lost to Virginia thirty four to seventeen on November fifteenth,
Still in the mix, Miami Hurricanes will still be the
Committee's highest ranked ACC team on Tuesday night, but they
would be excluded if the playoff were today to make
room for a conference champion. That means the ACC winner
could knock the league's best team out of the playoff.
(13:27):
See that was one argument that I was in with
somebody the other day, and as well they could just
replace him with Miami.
Speaker 2 (13:31):
It doesn't work that way. Can't do that.
Speaker 1 (13:34):
The Committee isn't ignoring Miami's head they head win against
Notre Dame, but it also isn't comparing the Canes only
to the Irish. Miami also needs to earn an edge
against Alabama and BYU, two teams the Committee is deemed
better than Miami to this point. If both of those
teams lose their respective conference championship games. It would open
the door for Miami to possibly enter the twelve team
(13:55):
field with Notre Dame. Everybody else in the ACC is out.
You asked about Notre Dame. I did The Irish have
done everything right since the row and two start running
the table and doing it with consistent dominance regardless of opponent.
At number nine, the Irish are safely in the field
if they can stay there through conference championship chaos. The
(14:18):
concern would be if Alabama won the SEC and jump
Notre Dame, pushing the Irish number ten yep, and if
BYU and Texas Tech both made the playoff. If BYU
wins the Big twelve, both teams are highly likely to
make the playoff, which means someone currently in the top
ten would.
Speaker 2 (14:33):
Have to be excluded.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
The Irish will watch and wait and need to hope
those two results don't unfold.
Speaker 3 (14:40):
So I think the I mean, I think the Irish
are the one outlier up there right now that if
you're Texas, you have a really good gripe with because
of the common opponent in Texas A and m right,
combined with the massive disparity in opportunity to play and
beat top ten top fifteen seams.
Speaker 2 (15:03):
That's a lot of what Steve Sarkishan has harped on.
Speaker 1 (15:05):
Well, then he pointed out, you know, Notre Dame last
year did not get punished for losing at home to
Northern Illinois the way folks are wanting to punish Texas
for losing at Florida.
Speaker 2 (15:14):
Same thing.
Speaker 3 (15:15):
But there's the Committee has almost applied ceilings to teams
based on head to ahead. Right, Alabama can't be ahead
of Oklahoma despite the win over Georgia because Oklahoma went
to Tuscaloosa and beat them all of a sudden, though
Notre Dame doesn't have the same thing for their loss
to Miami.
Speaker 1 (15:32):
Yeah, yeah, it's weird. And then finally you asked about
the group of five. As of today, Tulane would be in.
If the Green Waves win the American it will represent
the Group of five in the playoff. Tulane is currently
the only Group of five team ranked by the Committee,
but if North Texas wins, it would be the most
(15:52):
likely team to reach the CFP given the overall strength
of the conference this season, they would be twelve one
and all that still in the mix. North Texas and
James Madison JMU has clinched the East Division and a
spot in the Sun Belt Conference Championship game. North Texas
will face two Lane in the America, and if it wins,
it's more likely to represent the G five in the
(16:13):
playoff than JMU because of its schedule strength. JMU could
still be considered, though, if Duke wins the ACC, giving
the group of five two playoff teams in the twelve
teen field.
Speaker 3 (16:23):
I think that's so good happening. Ye, nothing to disagree
with there. I mean the Irish being at nine coming
into the week, you can understand how how they reached
those conclusions.
Speaker 1 (16:31):
Yeah, so what she has right now first round buys
number one Ohio State, number two Indiana.
Speaker 2 (16:35):
Of course they play this week. Whoever wins will be
number one, whoever.
Speaker 1 (16:37):
Loses probably will be two. No lower than the three
I would think. Georgia she has is the third seed,
the SEC champ. Texas Tech, the four seed is the
big twelve champ. So I can't see in the unless
they were absolutely blown out of the water by Ohio
State dropping below three, they could drop them four? Could
they'd still get a buy First round games on campus
(16:58):
December nineteenth and twenty, right now she has TWU lane
in the twelfth spot playing at number five Oregon Virginia
the eleven spot, the A SEC CHAMPI at number six Texas,
A and M number ten, Alabama at number seven, ole Miss.
Speaker 2 (17:10):
And number nine Notre Dame, number eight Oklahoma.
Speaker 1 (17:13):
That's where it is, and then it would be the
quarterfinal matchups would be the two lane Oregon winner in
Lubbock to play Texas Tech. Well, actually not in Lubbock.
That would probably be at the Cotton Bowl. Virginia and
A and M against Georgia.
Speaker 2 (17:30):
That would be I think the Sugar Bowl is a
semi this year. I'm looking at this.
Speaker 1 (17:38):
No, No, we'd be a quarterfinal, So that would be
in New Orleans, Alabama, Ole Miss winter against Indiana that
could be in the Orange Bowl, and then Notre Dame
Oklahoma winter against Ohio State and the Rose Bowl.
Speaker 3 (17:51):
You know what's really working against some of these other
at large teams right now the fact that Oregon didn't
have to play Ohio State. Yeah, it could have been
a potential comparative resume point and a potential loss that
might have knocked them down into this muddy picture. For
who's number nine, Who's number ten. Instead, Oregon with one
(18:13):
ranked win is going to sit there pretty comfortably and one.
Speaker 1 (18:16):
Ranked loss in the end. And of course Indiana and
Ohios did didn't play in the regular season, but they
will play this week.
Speaker 2 (18:23):
All right.
Speaker 1 (18:24):
Up next, we're gonna hear from Longr's head coach Steve
Sarkisian his thoughts obviously on this team. We'll do that
when we continue here on this Tuesday afternoon on Sports
Radio AM thirteen under the Zone in the ir at Yeah,
Jackson Tuesday, I'm thirteen under the Zone. In the four
(18:46):
o'clock hour, we hear from McCain, George Strait in part
of our return cuts. Three o'clock hour, from the iconic
Willie Nelson. Then of course here in the two o'clock hour,
the immortal Stevie ray Vaughn.
Speaker 2 (19:00):
Here's wall of denial, a lot of that right now, Yes.
Speaker 4 (19:05):
There.
Speaker 1 (19:06):
Might be some from the College Football Playoff Committee.
Speaker 2 (19:10):
The wall of denial. Next stage is bargaining.
Speaker 1 (19:16):
Yeah, speaking of that, Long Horns head coach Steve Sarkisian
has been making the rounds obviously, he's been on Paul
Fine Bomb Show, He's on SEC Now we brought to
some of those comments yesterday. He also was on Colin
Cowhard on this radio station yesterday, and he did some
(19:36):
other things as well, But here was his conversation that
he had with Cowherd about where the long runs belonged
in the national scope of the college football playoff.
Speaker 5 (19:45):
I'm more willing to give an SEC team a loss
that's perceived as ugly because on Florida, by the way,
when you lost, was better than they are at the
end of the season. But what would you say to
people start to go, you know, Steve, I mean Georgia
and Ohio's fine, but that Florida game, what would you
say to the critics?
Speaker 6 (20:03):
Well, I'd say this, you know, at the end of
the day, in this conference, it's not about getting up
for two games a year. It's week in and week
out and the grind of this conference. And to go
play your SEC opener in the swamp against Florida not
an easy task in that environment, against that team, with
the quality of players that they had. And I understand, hey,
(20:24):
years can go the way that they go. But at
the end of the day, you know, I'd love to
say that we went out and played a perfect season.
Speaker 7 (20:31):
We didn't.
Speaker 6 (20:32):
We lost some tough games, but so did a lot
of other people. I think the difference is we won
some really big games. You know, we played five, you know,
top ten teams in the country. Out of our twelve
regular season games, five of them are against top ten
ranked teams in the country. Three of those were wins,
two of those of which are ranked in the current
top ten, and the other one, Vanderbilt, is just outside
(20:53):
the top ten. And we finished the season after that
Florida game six to one, and of those six wins,
you know, four of them were against you know, top
ten ranked teams. We went three and one in those
four games. We capped it off with a with a
double digit win against the number three team, undefeated Texas
A and M team in the country.
Speaker 7 (21:12):
So all in all, we're proud of what we did.
Speaker 6 (21:15):
I think we're more than deserving of being in this
playoff because I think ultimately is this can if we're
going to get into looking at records, which is what
the AP pole does. The AP pole, the reporters, they
can't watch every game.
Speaker 7 (21:29):
All right, did they win, did they lose? What was
a score?
Speaker 8 (21:31):
All right?
Speaker 6 (21:32):
They were you know, they were favored by twenty eight.
They won by thirty one. They just they ranked by records,
and that's clear. But my understanding of the committee is
is how do you play against the good teams?
Speaker 3 (21:42):
You know?
Speaker 6 (21:42):
How do you play against the how do you play
against the common opponents? How do you play against Because
when you go into the playoffs, nobody's going to be
favored by twenty eight points, right that these games are
all you know, they're they're going to be tight ball games.
How do you play against the good teams? And if
you only had one, two or three shots against the
good teams and you didn't win, you didn't win.
Speaker 7 (22:01):
To me, that's part of your resume.
Speaker 6 (22:03):
We had five opportunities and that's two more than any
other team in the country, and we won three of them,
which is the best since twenty nineteen when Joe Burrow
and LSU beat three teams that were ranked in the
top ten during the regular season. So it's a pretty
monumental and historic run that we had to get on.
Speaker 7 (22:20):
And I don't get me wrong, I.
Speaker 6 (22:22):
Wish we went undefeated too, but there was a tall
task with a new team. We fought our tails off.
We fought our tails off in Columbus, Ohio. We fought
our tails off in Athens, Georgia, and we fought our
tails off in Gainesville, Florida, three of the probably most
difficult places to play in the country. And at the
end of the day, we're nine and three. We're six
and two in the Southeastern Conference. We've beaten three top
(22:42):
ten ranked teams, two of which are current top ten
ranked teams, one of which was undefeated up until last week.
So I'm very proud of what we've accomplished, and unequivocally
I think we should be in the playoffs.
Speaker 8 (22:53):
I got them.
Speaker 6 (22:53):
I'm actually kind of shocked we're actually having a discussion
about this. But again, there's two teams ranked in front
of us that we just beat, one we just beat
this last month, and so I'm a little concerned about
what the committee's looking at. And to your point, if
we're just gonna look at records, I got to reevaluate
our future schedules because I have to do what's in
(23:13):
the best interests of the University of Texas. If we're
gonna look at records, I got to make sure I'm
putting us in position to have the best record possible
at the end of the season, as opposed to playing
really good teams and then looking at the total body work.
Speaker 2 (23:26):
I'm right.
Speaker 1 (23:28):
So that that's from that's his conversation with Colin Coward yesterday.
I had another another one. Well he was only a
serious XM's College Football Today show.
Speaker 2 (23:39):
Yeah that was this morning. This this next one. So
we're keeping up with Sark, you know, every stop along
the way, and I was at Minnesota.
Speaker 1 (23:48):
Yeah, that's right at the whistle stopping. Here's what you
got to say this morning, and I get it.
Speaker 8 (23:54):
We scheduled the Hio State. We went and played that game.
We lose fourteen to seven. We get stopped inside the
five yard line twice on two fourth downs, We outgained
them by nearly two hundred yards, and we was fourteen
to seven. We lost the game, but they've beaten every
other team they've played on their schedule by three scores,
and so at that point, it's like, why do we
(24:14):
even play that game? Because if we're a six and
two team of excuse me. If we're a ten to
two team right now that played four top ten ranked
opponents with three wins, still in the top ten, we're
not even having a discussion right now. We're probably ranked
six in the country in the CFP. We're not having
a discussion. So my point is, why the hell am
(24:35):
I going to play that game next year? For what
what good does it do me?
Speaker 1 (24:41):
Yeah? And of course o Ohio States schedule to come
here to open the season.
Speaker 2 (24:46):
So there you are.
Speaker 1 (24:48):
There's there's that from Sorry, There'll be more, obviously, and
we're gonna hear from Lane Kiffen a little bit later
as well. But up next, we bring you inconceivable here
on this Tuesday afternoon. So I hang with us right
here on sports Radio AM thirteen under the zone of
the iHeartRadio app. The second hour of the program here
(25:28):
on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the zone Craig Way
alongside the producer Jay Carman. We're glad to have you
with us alongside you always reach us via the text line.
All you have to do is text word Texas followed
by your question or comment to eight one five three zero.
Standard messaging and data rates may apply on the text line.
Somebody said the DCTF segment is my fave. Can you
(25:51):
take two seconds and talk about Eric Morris replacement in
or Texas? Neil Brown has been mentioned. We'll take more
than two seconds. When Greg Tepper, the editor in chief
of Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine, and you can check
them out on line of Texas Football dot com. Tap
will join us in just a few minutes, so we'll
(26:12):
do that, okay, before we get to that. This was
something I'm meant to do last hour, but we had
a lot to get to so I'm gonna do it
right now before we take a break and then have
tep on with us. And that is to give you
updated because several of you have asked where are they.
Speaker 3 (26:27):
Going to go?
Speaker 1 (26:28):
What bowl game are they gonna go to? They're probably
not going to get in the playoffs, so where as
the longest it go, I'm gonna tell you and tell
you the other projections playoff in bowl as well. This
is according to the two guys who followed extensively for ESPN.
Speaker 2 (26:44):

teams of the number twelve spot. Bonnigara believes North Texas

drop all the way to seven. And both of them
have nine seed Notre Dame in number eight seed Oklahoma,
So there's that those advancing to the quarterfinals. Bonagura has
(27:33):
ten seed Alabama at number two Indiana. We're playing in
the Cotton Bowl, and slay Ball has it chalk five
seed Oregon. In his estimation, it's four seed Texas Tech
and the Cotton Bowl that's on New Year's Eat on
January first. In the Orange Bowl, Bonnegara has five seed
Tech A and M against four seed Tech. Shlay Ball
has ten seed Alabama at two seed Indiana. That's in
(27:56):
the Orange Bowl. The Rose Bowl both have number nine
seed Notre Dame beating eight seed Oklahoma and playing Ohio
State in the Rose Bowl and in the Sugar Bowl.
Bonagura has the six seed Oregon playing the three seed Georgia.
Slay Ball has Virginia pulling the upset as the eleven
Wow and playing three seed Georgia, so beating Miss There Yeah,

Both have it as a rematch of the game that

Speaker 2 (28:41):
Both have Texas tack as semi final teams.
Speaker 1 (28:43):
Yes, Wow, No, no oh. Bonnagura has A and M
Indiana They've got. Bontagura has Tech going out in the quarterfinals. No,
I'm wrong, I'm just looking at a different date on
the semifinal. You're right, they both have them in the
semifinals against different opponents against higher state but in different bowls.
Speaker 2 (29:02):
That's what's different. Yeah, but that sticks out to me.
Speaker 3 (29:05):
They both backed Texas Tech to win in that quarterfinal round.
Speaker 1 (29:09):
Bonnigera as a five seed Tech beating a one seed
Ohio State in Glendale. Shlay Ball has a four seed
Tech playing one seed Ohio State at Petwell. They both
have Ohio State in Indiana in the final.
Speaker 2 (29:22):

(30:13):
against Missouri State. Lay Ball says Georgia Southern against East
Carolina Missouri State. By the way, we'd have to get
a waiver to be eligible for that their first year
in there in FBS, but they've applied for that. Just
depends on if there's enough Bowl eligible teams and if
they're slots.
Speaker 3 (30:29):
If there isn't, you've got five win Florida sitting there,
that's right, could that never mind?
Speaker 1 (30:34):
Probably five win Rice would go before them based on
the higher.
Speaker 2 (30:39):
GPA.
Speaker 1 (30:40):
Oh yeah, that's what they go by. That's that's the
first benchmark after that. If they're going to take a
five win team, it depends on what that EPR is,
and Rice would probably have it. They've qualified before on
that with five wins. The Union Home Gasparilla Bowl Union
Home Mortgage. Uh Bonnagara says South Florida since HEAs state

shlay Boll says U kind of against Wake Forest. It's

Speaker 3 (34:18):
Wow, Okay, question for you, Craig. Would Lane Kiffin coach
the bowl game for LSU.
Speaker 2 (34:24):
No, No, that won't happen. Frank Wilson. Frank Wilson will coach.
Speaker 3 (34:28):
Interesting, so Texas versus Michigan, which we'll see at dk
R PAT in twenty twenty seven.
Speaker 2 (34:34):
That's right.
Speaker 1 (34:35):
But they will play each other for the second straight year.
If that's the case, since they opened in ann Arbor
our second game of the year last year and up
in ann Arbor, Texas.
Speaker 2 (34:41):
Did maybe Michigan would get their first ranked win. Yeah,
it could be the Las Vegas Bowl. Bannagar says, Iowa
against Utah.
Speaker 1 (34:48):
Slay Boss says it's Illinois against Utah, the Lockheed Martin
Armed Forces Bowl and Fort Were bonnagarsas Kansastate against East Carolina.
Slave Bos says un l V against Army Auto's own
Liberty says it's TCU against cal shlay Boll says i
Aoway stayed against Memphis, the Duke's Mayo Bowl. Banga says
Louisville against LSU. Slave Bos says Duke Missouri Holiday Bowl.
(35:11):
Bonaga has it his pit versus Arizona. Slay Boll says
has some mew against Arizona and the formerly known as
Bahamas Bowl. It's his bowld TBD sight and date to
be determined. Uh Bonnigera is it a UTSA against Delaware
and slay ball as Utah State against Missouri State. Both
of those would be provisionals. It would get in Delaware
(35:32):
in Missouri State.
Speaker 2 (35:34):
B D go Blueheads, baby ud Yeah, there you go.
Speaker 1 (35:37):
All right, coming up, we'll visit with Greg Tepper from
Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine on thirteen under the Zone.
Speaker 7 (35:46):
We're back.
Speaker 9 (35:47):
It's the Craig Way Show with Hall of Fame broadcaster
and voice of the Texas Long Half Craig Way.
Speaker 1 (35:55):
Back here on a Tuesday, and uh yeah, it was
a moment for Texas with the win over Texas A
and M and three top ten wins. Probably still won't
be enough to get them into the college football Playoff.
We were talking about that last week with the editor in
chief of Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine, Greg Tepper, and
Tep Joins is now on the hotline.
Speaker 2 (36:16):
You know, Tep.
Speaker 1 (36:17):
The Texas win, whether folks want to believe it or not,
the Texas win of ver A and M did not
did not affect the Longhorns and the Dave Campbell's Texas
Football power Pole.
Speaker 2 (36:28):
They were at number three. They stayed at number three.
Speaker 1 (36:30):
What it did do was to drop Texas A and
M from the one slot in that and push Texas
Tech in to that one spot with the Red Raiders
now holding down that one spot.
Speaker 8 (36:42):
Well, because one of those teams is playing for conference
championship this weekend and everyone else is waiting around. But yeah,
I mean, well, Texas Tech took care of their business.
They had the one hiccup obviously against Arizona State, but
since then they had been rolling. And I think that
I thought what they did this past weekend, and it
flew under the radar because it was a quote unquote
(37:02):
meaningless game against a poor West Virginia team. But for
Texas Tech, who had everything locked up, nothing was going
to change as far as they're already in the Big
Twelve championship by virtue of what had happened on Friday night.
For them to go and to really send a statement
that they are that they are coming for it all
(37:23):
in their win over West Virginia, I thought was very,
very impressive. And so yeah, they've they finished the season strong. Tech,
Texas finish the season strong. A and M maybe not
so much.
Speaker 2 (37:34):
Yeah, here's an interesting thing. Tell me what you think
of this.
Speaker 1 (37:38):
I've heard from a lot of Texas Tech fans and
they're almost kind of divided on this one issue, and
that is with Texas A and M losing, there's a decent
shot that Tech could move into a top four and
be in position, especially if they win the Big Twelve
to get a bye. But there's but I've heard from
an equal number of Red Raider fans who don't want.
Speaker 2 (38:00):
Them to get a buy.
Speaker 1 (38:00):
They're that confident of the winning of five versus twelve
game and would like for them and would love to
have a home playoff.
Speaker 2 (38:06):
Game and love it.
Speaker 1 (38:07):
I've also heard some similar things from Aggie fans, although
I don't believe that quite as much because they would
have loved to have had the perfect season, the win
over Texas and the buy. But they can console themselves
with the fact they're in all probability going to have
a home playoff game.
Speaker 8 (38:24):
It'll look it kind of depends on what you're in
this for, right, If you are the type of fan
and your end goal is if your text let's say
Tech and Tech for example, if your goal is I
want Texas Tech to win a national championship. The number
one thing I want is for them to win a
national championship, then you say, of course you want to
buy it. Of course you want to advance in the
(38:45):
next round. Sense, of course that's what you want. But
if you are in this for I want there to
be the most memorable, most remarkable scene possible in the
in the my my favorite team's home stadium. Uh, then
you want then you want to host a game, because
(39:07):
I mean, you can't imagine there's never been. They don't
play conference championship games, at least at the Big twelve level.
Uh it at home anymore? They don't, do you know
that they used to be the way back when that
they would play perhaps conference championship games, you know, with
the team hosting. You don't get that anymore. So all
these high stakes games. This would be the highest stakes
(39:31):
game in love it football history basically, So I can
certainly understand somebody wanting that. But again, if your goal
is and you're and you're a Red Raider fan or
you're an Agi fan, we want to win the national championship.
Of course you take the buy. Of course, you want
to finish in that top four. You want to you know,
get next your week of rest, you want to get
a next your week of game planning and figure things out.
Of course that's what you want. But I can also
(39:52):
understand the people who are like, no, let's let's have it,
let's have a fun time in Lubbock.
Speaker 2 (39:57):
Yeah. Well, and.
Speaker 1 (40:00):
I think it's a safe bet that at and T
Stadium is going to be Jerry World is going to
be a wash in Red and a Black b YU
always travels well, their fan base does travel well. That said,
I think Texas Tech is going to dominate the fans
spectacle there in Arlington this Saturday.
Speaker 8 (40:18):
Well, I'm especially considering they haven't been in a big
courk they've been a conference championship game ever, I mean functionally,
you know, the advent of the of the There there
have been obviously very high stakes games that were de
facto conference championship games. But for Tech to Tech, they've
been waiting a long, long long time for a game
with this high of stakes in it. And let's not
overlook the fact that, you know, if they lose this
(40:41):
game to BYU, things do get a little bit tricky.
You could certainly see a universe in which the college
football Playoffs Committee decides to get a little bit wacky
and say, well, let's really take a look at this schedule.
Speaker 7 (40:58):
Uh.
Speaker 8 (40:58):
You know, that is one of the things I think
Technique to be wary of is you know, I've said this,
of course is the beauty contest. This is not you know,
these are I've always said, these are television executives making
television decisions, not football executives making football decisions. And Texas techs,
as fun as they have been, they are not the
blue blood brand name that like Notre Dame. Is right,
(41:19):
they're not the blue blood brand name that even Texas is.
And so for Tech, you need to lead no doubts.
You need to go out there and make sure you
win this game on Saturday and make it a no
doubter or absolutely block them in and then you know
then at that point complain about seeding, because that would
be what we would file under the under the heading
of good problems.
Speaker 2 (41:38):
Where do you Where do you stand right now with
A and M?
Speaker 1 (41:40):
The mere fact that they're probably tonight going to be
in the five or six or maybe even seven slot
and so losing the buy not getting to play for
a conference championship, but they will get to play a
home playoff game. But obviously the loss to your ar
rival for the second year in a row stings.
Speaker 2 (41:57):
Where do you stme with the Aggies right now?
Speaker 8 (42:01):
I think that if you are A and M, you're
obviously disappointed. And I think that what you saw was
all of the little things that could have cost you
before but didn't finally come up and come and bite
you in the rear end. And an inability to stop
the run at times has been a real problem for them,
and it was I guess the Texas team that quite frankly,
(42:23):
it has not been very good at running ball this year,
but suddenly found their groove when Trey Wisner going off.
I think that you saw a quarterback in Marcel Reid
who sometimes when you make him go through his second
and third progressions, is not as accurate and not as
sharp as he is on that first three. I think
(42:44):
you saw a lot of those things, and so look,
it's a disappointing way to end the season for a
variety of reasons, to stop for college football playoff reasons,
in all of the water cooler reasons. But everything's still
right out there in front of them. I'm absolutely fascinated
to see where they end up as far as seating
is concerned, and what those matchups could look like, because
there's a really big difference. You mentioned there're gonna be five,
(43:05):
six or seven, where there's a big difference between that
because if you're five and you're hosting a team like
let's say they host the winner of the AAC championship game,
either North Texas or Tulane, that would be as a
very realistic possibility, and I think a and win internet
game has a favorite in that one. There is also
a possibility let's say they slip to seven. If they're
(43:26):
slip to seven, they could be seeing a team like
Alabama coming into that and suddenly suddenly that doesn't look
like a row as Rosie a proposition so for A
and L, I think A night is a really like
if I'm A and M. I'm watching this very closely
because those those particular seeds, this particular penultimate seating is
(43:49):
going to be critical to what their fate is and
exactly how much does an or does the committee punish them?
How much does they go do they go and start
looking a little harder at their schedule and say, okay,
you have that win over on the road at Notre Dame.
That's a signature win, but past that it's getting kind
of bear. It'll be really interesting to see what happens
(44:09):
tonight because because a lot hangs in the balance.
Speaker 1 (44:12):
For an M, no doubt, you know, Texas fans and
sark bound to be disappointed. I think ultimately down the
road that they won't get in. But a Texas Michigan
citters ball wouldn't exactly suck, would it.
Speaker 8 (44:24):
Well, look, you know it's one of one of those
games you call helmet games, right where you put put
the helmets on the graphic and you go, oh, I
want to watch that game. I don't even need to
know who's playing. It's like if Texas and Michigan would
be fantastic and it looks that's that's obviously not not
in the way that Texas was hoping their season would end.
They were hoping it would end with confetti and the
National Championship trophy. That looks like it's going to be
(44:47):
at least pretty unlikely. But if you want to talk
about a ten potential for a ten win season, a
signature win over another blue Blip program, and a New
Year's kind of in a New Year's Day or New
Year'sday adjacent bowl, I think that is about as good
as you can hope for. And I will say that
towards the end of the season they will have earned that.
(45:08):
I mean they would have earned by beating A and M,
you know, by coming out and you know, taking care
of the business down the stretch, even if it didn't
always look good, even if it wasn't always pretty. For
them to finish with this slurry like this, I think,
you know, it is impressive and they will have earned
that spot and an opportunity to at least salvage what
I think we could call a pretty good, if not
(45:30):
great season.
Speaker 1 (45:31):
So we're looking at two for sure and maybe three
teams from the state of Texas getting into the playoffs.
The third would be North Texas if they can beat
Too Lane in New Orleans on Friday Night.
Speaker 2 (45:43):
And this is kind of an interesting.
Speaker 1 (45:45):
Deal, isn't it, Chep, because you have two programs with
head coaches.
Speaker 2 (45:50):
I wouldn't say Lane.
Speaker 1 (45:51):
Duck had coaches because they could get them into the playoff,
but they're on their way out the door. And it
also presents an interesting situation for North Texas with regard
to their future head coach. Now Eric Morris is going
to coach them all the way through the playoff or
as long as their postseason is. But I'm hearing names
like Neil Brown from the former West Virginia. I'm I'm
(46:16):
hearing several other names that we've heard from Power five
programs that that could wind up there in Denton.
Speaker 2 (46:26):
And it couldn't wouldn't be a bad destination.
Speaker 8 (46:30):
No, And I think you know the old scout saying
is leave it better than you found it, right? Well?
And I think you can say that Eric Morris is
absolutely leaving it better than he found it. I mean,
he has taken North Texas from you know, the the
Cephala trell era which ended rather than name and civile.
I can't say that word, but I tried it. But
they took him from there to legitimately on the cusp
(46:54):
of the college football playoffs. That is a remarkable turnaround
and and he loved it better than he found it.
I don't think, and I think in kind of talking
with the North Texas fans in my life, I don't
think that there's a lot of hard feelings. I think
there's a lot of like, Okay, yeah, coach, we appreciate it,
thank you very much. You know we are on that,
we are ready for the next step and find a
guy who continue this momentum. And am I being Neil Brown?
I think Neil Brown is the hot name. He is
(47:16):
the name to know. You know that that I know
we're chasing down sources, Mike Crave and our college football
writer is chasing down sources right now. I know he
is the hot name. But I also know that what
will be interesting is that with other jobs, let's say
in the same ballpark as North Texas, let's say Memphis
(47:37):
and Tulane coming open, well then and USF put lump
them in there as well. Suddenly, if you're Neil Brown,
you might have more than one offer you might have
offers from from writing like that. I think North Texas
is trying to beat people to the punch. But now
because of a lot of sec movement that has opened
(47:58):
up some some AAC movement which could now make it
so that North Texas may have to fight off other
suitors for their first choice. I believe from everything that
we're hearing that Neil Brown is the first choice there.
But we will see how it all plays out, because
that's obviously a huge moment and an inflection point here for
the North Texas program to make sure that they capitalize
(48:20):
on what has been a tremendous twenty twenty five seeds.
Speaker 1 (48:23):
Yeah, and and Neil Brown of course had great success
at Troy at in the sun Belt before going to
West Virginia. Another name that I've heard that had good
success in the sun Belt before going to a power
for a job that might possibly enter is Billy Napier,
the former Florida coach. That's another name I've heard in
North Texas. I think could do worse than that if
(48:45):
they if they were decided to look at that way.
Speaker 8 (48:49):
Yeah, like you know, if you want to go into
and this is going to sound disrespectful, but in the
coaching you know, bargain based bargain bit here where guys
who are like, okay, well they just got fined, right
they're out of a job right now, but hey, they
can still do good for me. I think that billiy
Napier would be a really interesting hire there. I think
(49:09):
you can take a look at what happened with James
Franklin is a good example. Jane Franklin of course getting
fired at Penn State, well, Virginia techlotz around and goes
y'all want to have some of that. It would not
be a surprise to see a program like North Texas
or like any of those other programs like Tulane or
Memphis say, you know what, Billy Napier, we know you
can win at this level. You're a proven winner at
this level. We would love to have you come in
(49:31):
and try to do the same thing here. So yeah,
I think that's certainly a name to know. As I
would say, especially if Neil Brown doesn't work out for
North Texas, perhaps the name like Billy Napier could crop up.
Speaker 1 (49:42):
Can you hang on through the break because the one
thing you and I never want to do is short
change high school and I want to talk some playoffs here?
Speaker 2 (49:49):
Are you able to hang on for a few minutes
here during a break?
Speaker 8 (49:52):
Let's do it all right?
Speaker 2 (49:53):
All right?
Speaker 1 (49:54):
Greg Tamper, editor in chief Dake Campbell's Texas Football Magazine
with us.
Speaker 2 (49:57):
We'll take a quick break.
Speaker 1 (49:58):
When we come back, we turn our attention to thehigh
school football payoffs here on thirteen under the zone.
Speaker 2 (50:04):
We continue on a check on Tuesday. What are you
hitting with us here?
Speaker 3 (50:08):
Jagobs, Well, it was on the shirt and I know
it came up the last time we talked to.
Speaker 2 (50:12):
Temper a couple of weeks ago. Mike and the moon Pies.
Mike and the moon Pies.
Speaker 1 (50:16):
Greg Chapper, editor in chief of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine,
is on with us right now. Mike and the moon
Pies means something special to you?
Speaker 8 (50:24):
Tap uh Yes, Austin band, Yes, kind of a new
country band.
Speaker 2 (50:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (50:33):
Well, and who I saw Okay, Copeland Dance Hall that
we list of Texas places I need to take a
visit to.
Speaker 1 (50:41):
Okay, all right, we move over to the high school level,
and this is state quarter final week or regional final week.
I've always been kind of hung up in that thing.
It's like getting my foot untangled from a power cord
plugged in?
Speaker 10 (50:54):
Is it?
Speaker 2 (50:54):
Is it quarter final? Is it regional final?
Speaker 1 (50:57):
The answers, yes, it's a floor wax and a dessert top,
so it's it's it's both.
Speaker 2 (51:02):
Which do you prefer? Which term? Do you prefer?
Speaker 8 (51:06):
This is This is for me and and your mileage
mays ferry here, but I like regional final because for me,
regional final there is a set number of teams that
you know, you have to defeat within your region once
you get out to me starting next week, is when
do we get into the state wide portion of it?
Whereas the Region one versus Region two and that right
now this has been if you think like the sixty
(51:28):
Division one bracket. Right now, we are having four concurrent
regional tournaments and then we are going to determine the
champion of each of those regions and they are going
to go at it. And so I prefer regional final.
That just helps me kind of wrap my brain around
what's going on.
Speaker 1 (51:41):
Okay, I try to mix them both anyway, But I
see where you're going with that.
Speaker 2 (51:45):
Okay, all right, So here's.
Speaker 1 (51:46):
The simple question for you before we get into you know,
the meanest thing we do with gains. But I want
I'm gonna I'm going to roll down each region of
these ranks, and you tell me who right now, right now,
as as we look at it on December second, is
the best team in each of these regions.
Speaker 2 (52:04):
Okay, six A.
Speaker 1 (52:06):
Division one, there's North Crowley, Allen, Duncanville, walk Saggy, north Shore, Dickinson,
San Antonio, Johnson, Lake Travis. Of those eight right now,
who's the best team?
Speaker 8 (52:18):
Geez? So I picked north Shore to win the title.
I don't feel good about that. Even this week against Dickinson.
You could also put in I think North Crowley, which
is the defending state champs. I think Duncanville has very
quietly gain speed. If I have to pick one, I
will stick with my guns and go to North Shore.
Speaker 2 (52:37):
Okay, all right?
Speaker 1 (52:38):
Division two Dent and Geyer, South Lake Carrol, De Soto, Willis,
Summer Creek, c e King, Vandergrift, Dripping Springs.
Speaker 8 (52:49):
It's got to be South Lake Carroll. They've been wired
to wire. Number one looks the part last week against
prosper at South Lake Carol.
Speaker 2 (52:54):
All Right, five eighty one Dent, Ryan and Lead. I'm excited.
Speaker 1 (52:58):
About that, I get to call that for victory plus
on Friday Night frist go lone Star Highland Park, Port
Arrenthon Memorial, Barber's Hill, Smithson Valley, New Broncos.
Speaker 8 (53:08):
Five A D one is it's probably Alito, although I
think there's I've been saying for a couple of weeks.
The poor of the Memorial is building something special. So
that's a team I've got my own. And of course
you got many champions Bitton Valley, but I'll go with
the eleven or the twelve time champions in Alito.
Speaker 1 (53:24):
Most surprising team out of that region, Barber's Hill or
New Bronx.
Speaker 8 (53:29):
Yeah, I think so. I mean, well, last week, my goodness,
the way that they beat Fluberville Weis was a hard stopper.
So yeah, definitely from Barber's Hill.
Speaker 1 (53:37):
Yeah, I sure, say, when's the last time you heard
about a team blocking three punts in the game and
then losing because of a bad snap on a winning
field goal try.
Speaker 8 (53:45):
It was like the ball was grease the whole game.
Speaker 11 (53:48):
It was.
Speaker 8 (53:48):
It was one of the wildest things I've seen in
quite some times.
Speaker 1 (53:51):
Five A Division two Melissa Argyle, South Olk Cliff Poor
NHS Grows, Richmond Randall, Iowa Colony, Bernie Alamo Heights. By
the way, when Jake and I were discussing highlights and
stuff for the Longhorn football montage yesterday, he said, do
you want me to mix in any of that Basstrop Randall.
He had to call from the bass drop perspective that
(54:13):
all eighty three points of them there what it was
in eighty three?
Speaker 3 (54:16):
Eighty three to twenty no running clock until the fourth quarter,
and Landon Williams callis out there in the second half.
Speaker 8 (54:24):
Yeah, fine, if it makes you feel better. I think
that bastard lost to the team to beat in five
animation two. I think it's Randall.
Speaker 2 (54:33):
Yeah, I agree. I agree.
Speaker 1 (54:36):
For a D one Canyon West playing Stephenville, Alvardo, Salina, Kilgore, Fort,
Ben Crawford, Davenport.
Speaker 8 (54:43):
Lavergna, Stephenville especially, I mean the way they're rolling right now.
The Yellow Jackets look like a machine.
Speaker 2 (54:51):
All right.
Speaker 1 (54:52):
For a D two Midland Greenwood, brock Athens, Carthage, West, Orne, Stark,
la Vega, Quero, Sinton.
Speaker 8 (55:00):
I think it's got to be carbage at this point.
I've said this before, but like, if you're gonna beat Carthage.
You got to beat him early, and it's getting it's
getting late early right now to beat Carthage, That's true.
Speaker 1 (55:10):
Three A D one Peace or Paradise, by the way,
playing at the most unusual of the venues, Porcupine Stadium
in Springtown this week, Pat the Pine, Yeah, there you go,
potspur A grand View yoakum Columbus Lano Edna.
Speaker 8 (55:28):
It's got to be Columbus. I mean in three Division
one's been the wildest classification all year and it's has
continued that and yet here we are with the You know,
the more things change any more, they say the saying
Columbus looks like the team to beat right now, could.
Speaker 1 (55:40):
You have foreseen? I mean, look, we've seen in the
past several years, you and I have seen Grandview look great.
We saw him win back to back state titles. We
saw him losing a title round. I didn't have them
getting to the elite eight, did you?
Speaker 8 (55:56):
No? No, This is this is a this is a
virtue o so coaching performance by Ryan Abner. This is
a virtue of SOO performance. They are they are at
the very least a year early. Uh and and because
it's still a pretty young grand View team. Uh, but
they are playing well beyond their years, and they showed
a lot of moxie last week in what was they
wild win over Commerce.
Speaker 1 (56:16):
By the way, I had a lot of fun in
the Texas Texas A and M broadcast mentioning the starting
right tackle for Texas A and M Demetrius Crown over
the former grand View Zebra well.
Speaker 8 (56:25):
Uh and former, by the way, former grand View Zebra
tight end. That's right, he's catching passes for them.
Speaker 2 (56:33):
That's right, all right.
Speaker 1 (56:35):
Three A D two Idolu Wall, Leonard Gunner, Arp, Newton,
tyde Haven East Bernard.
Speaker 8 (56:43):
This has been the cleanest bracket because I think that
all four of the clear regional favorites are still alive.
But I I like, I keep bouncing back between Wall
and tyde Haven right now. I'm feeling like Wall, uh,
but I mean all four of those between Newton Gunner.
Of course, he needs to introduction Newton, who might be
playing the best of any of them right now. But
(57:03):
I will stick with all stay with Wall right now.
Speaker 1 (57:06):
You absolutely floored me when you said Wall and Tidy
at first and didn't mention Gunner and Newton.
Speaker 2 (57:11):
Tell us about it. The deck.
Speaker 8 (57:14):
I listened to three times defending champs. They're just quietly
plugging along.
Speaker 1 (57:18):
That's one of the seven games I'm gonna call, is say,
and I can't wait to see which two survivors get
out there. It'd be a lot of fun. Gush to
a D one West Texas. That's instanet for folks who
don't know ut the panhanda West Texas, Cisco, Hamilton Axtell,
Joaquin San Augustine, Mason Rafirio.
Speaker 8 (57:38):
It's Raferio because of what they did to Gnado last
week with avenging that lost, are in my opinion, the
clear favorite. But I will also say this Waskein cannot
keep getting away with it.
Speaker 2 (57:48):
They can't. They were a.
Speaker 8 (57:50):
Fourth place team a year ago that made it to
the semifinals, and now they're a third place team that's
back into the regional final. Theywun seventy one on a
leasing fields last week. I don't know what happening, but
walking is like I think they've spin this even sandbagging,
and then they're like, Okay, I guess it's time to
get to work now.
Speaker 2 (58:06):
Yeah there you do not want to see right now? Yeah?
You know what's weird?
Speaker 1 (58:11):
There are only three teams in the State, and you
have to forgive me. I can only think of two
of them at the time. But there's only three teams
still playing that have allowed less than one hundred points
this year, and one of them is the team I've
got Friday is Alito.
Speaker 2 (58:26):
I forgot the second.
Speaker 1 (58:27):
The third is Actual that has allowed less than one
hundred points this year.
Speaker 8 (58:33):
That's there might there my pick to win the region.
They've been my pick before the playoffs. I love that defense.
Craig Horn is the guy who knows two Edivision won well,
he's coach to Italy. Uh yeah, I love this actional defense.
Speaker 1 (58:45):
Okay to a D two uh Stratford Groover, Lindsay Munster,
we get crap bowl. As you said, two point zero
the other night, Brimont, Mount Enterprise and Junction Shiner.
Speaker 8 (58:58):
I think you got to go to the sending Champson
Munster although and we can maybe I don't know if
we're going to talk about it, but that Junction Shine.
Our game is boss office stuff. It's so good matchup
of UNDEAF and then by the way, Mount Enterprise. Mount
Enterprise is probably the quote unquote party crasher here, but
they're thirteen to zero and kagan Ash they're running back,
could break Ken Hall's singles get a single season rushing
(59:20):
record this week, and if they win, he could break
his career record next week. So a lot on the
line for Mount.
Speaker 1 (59:26):
Enterprise, So no doubt, all right, One AD one Rank
and Water Valley and Union Hill and well Gordon.
Speaker 8 (59:35):
Yeah, okay, it's Gordon. Yeah. I was like, I had somebody.
I had somebody, a six man person that I trust
tell me this week that he doesn't think Gordon's going
to play a snap in the second half this year,
which is saying something because they've played some really good teams,
including they're playing a really good Union Hill team this week.
Speaker 1 (59:50):
And then finally one AD two Klondike, Jayton Strawn Richland Springs.
I had a six man person that we both trust
very very well. Just tell me, because I said, where
are they playing? Because the other day he did not know.
On Sunday he said, not yet, typical goofing around with
these two. But he just told me Stevenville Saturday at
(01:00:11):
five o'clock for Strawn and Richland Springs.
Speaker 8 (01:00:15):
For those who don't know, stew and Risland Springs of
a history. They've played a lot of really high stafe
football games, they'll play another one. But the answer to
your question is whoever wins the other game? Which is
Jaydon the defending state champs, staying on Kwondike, who has
basically been the clear either first or second best team
in the state. We'll find out this week when they
take on one another in Colorado City.
Speaker 1 (01:00:36):
All Right, and then finally, the meanest thing we do
each week, I give you three games you can transport
to one. You tell me which of these it would be.
You can either go too. You can either go to
td ECU Stadium on the U of H campus for
Galena Park, north Shore and Dickinson. You can go to
(01:00:58):
choctall in our hope you don't have four hours of
lightning delays and see our Gyle and Melissa, or the
aforementioned Klondike and Jake and Jaydon who do battle at
Wolf Stadium in Colorado City.
Speaker 2 (01:01:16):
So which of those three is your selections?
Speaker 8 (01:01:21):
This is a really rude one because all three have
great storylines. North Shore and Dickinson is like, can anybody
stop Northshore? North Shore is one seven consecutive regional titles
they've been in I think eleven consecutive regional finals is
insane what they've the consistency that they've had, but Dickinson
looks like the real deal and the team that it
(01:01:42):
could absolutely be thrown them. That game's fascinating. Our Gyll
Melissa has been interesting because of the game we've been
keeping it, we've wanted to see all year long. And also,
if you don't know, there is a particular amount of
drama of surrounding Melissa right now because Melissa, in the
second half of their win over Anna last week, their
quarterback Brett Holloway, who is who ran for three hundred
(01:02:03):
yards in that game, got ejected. Now they're appealing that
because the rule is if you get ejected in the
second half of the game, you have to miss the
first half of the next game, and.
Speaker 7 (01:02:12):
So they're appealing that.
Speaker 8 (01:02:13):
We don't yet know the results of the appeal, but
there's a lot of intrigue there. It's a great game
regardless of who's on the field, but that one's the
answer for me, is that we're going to punch a
ticket at AT and T Stadium. It's Jayden and Klondike.
This is number one versus Number two. It's it's the
game of the year. In one AID Division two and
with all due respect to the feuding Strawn and Richland Springs,
(01:02:35):
I didn't winner of this game is the favorite to
win the one A Division two state championship. And can
Klondike find a way to end the twenty eight game
winning streak of Jaydon That's the real question, this one.
I think. I think as far as six man football,
it didn't get a.
Speaker 1 (01:02:50):
Whole lot better than this, no doubt about it. He's
Greg Tebri's all over the place. He's too big with
us when it comes to high school football as well.
Editor in chief Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, Are you
going out to a game Friday?
Speaker 2 (01:03:03):
Are you even?
Speaker 8 (01:03:04):
I am gonna say so? So I'm not so. By
the way, it's a weird schedule. It's only two Thursday games. Yeah,
Gunner and Leonard and then Refirao and Nason are the
only two playing on Thursday. And there's only like I think,
like five Saturday games. It is a huge Friday night,
Like it's the last, big, big, big Friday night of
the season. So I'm gonna sit at home and watch
a bunch of them. So that's that's what I'm doing.
Speaker 2 (01:03:23):
There. You go hey, appreciate it and we'll look forward
to it soon.
Speaker 1 (01:03:26):
Thanks Tip, all right, take you guys all right. That
is Greg Tip, editor in chief Dave Campiells Texas Football MAKERO.
Speaker 2 (01:03:33):
We have a lot of fun.
Speaker 1 (01:03:33):
The two of us work in that two day Division
two state title game, and I agree with them. I
think it's going to be the Junction Shiner survivor probably
against Munster, which could be a great deal of fun.
If it winds up being that way, we'll see. We'll
be back to wrap up hour number two. I'm thirteen
Under the Zone, third and final hour of the program
(01:03:55):
here on sports Radio AM thirteen Under the Zone. Are
Thanksgetting Right Scheper from Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine joined
us to talk college football and high school football across
the state of Texas.
Speaker 2 (01:04:08):
And I have heard this a lot, I say a lot, you.
Speaker 1 (01:04:14):
Know, emails have seen on social media. Some people have
what is it DMD me send me direct messages right
at horn Voice right Facebook messages. I've gotten from people
Texas tech fans who many of whom would prefer to
(01:04:37):
not be in the top four and to have on
playoff game, partly because they feel like if we're the
number five seed and we're playing a twelve seed, probably
North Texas. We're tou Lane, probably possibly James Madison. If
they crash the party, it's probably going to be it's
it's going to be a G five. They're not going
(01:04:57):
to put one of the other ones. I think unless
Duke somehow manages to squeeze in.
Speaker 2 (01:05:04):
I think Duke needs a James Madison loss.
Speaker 1 (01:05:07):
Yeah, I think you're right, and they are playing Troy,
so we'll see. But even if it was Duke, I
think Texas Tech fans feel pretty confident that no matter
who they would play, it'd be great.
Speaker 2 (01:05:21):
To have one more home game.
Speaker 1 (01:05:22):
I know a lot of Long Wrn fans felt that
way last year, whereas Clemson provided a little more stern
opposition with the Long Wrns, did their job and won
that game, and then it was weird because they went
to the Peach Bowl as the lower seeded team. Arizona
State got a buy because conference champions got those buys
last year. That's not on the table this year. Ironically,
(01:05:43):
it could be Big twelve again.
Speaker 3 (01:05:44):
Can you imagine if we had that system this year,
we'd be talking about the fourth highest conference champion getting
a bye.
Speaker 1 (01:05:50):
Imagine if Duke got a buyelievab that would be right anyway.
But there are a lot of Texas Tech fans who
feel that they could handle a home playoff game, and
then you're in a five versus four matchup in Arlington
probably let's see, well a quarterfinal. They could be someplace else,
(01:06:15):
it depends. They could be in Arlington, depending on who
the four seed is and where it is, but they're
probably going to travel wherever it is anyway. And then
you're just basically talking about uniform color. At that point,
you know whether you we're in white uniforms or dark
uniforms on that So, but I know there's a lot
of other forward thinking fans also the Red Raiders, thinking no,
(01:06:36):
we want the shortest, easiest route to playing for and
possibly winning a national championship. Even if you get an
opponent that you should be able to handle, there is
a chance you could have somebody injured. It's one less
game you have to worry about that. So, and Texas
A and M in a similar situation, except the Aggies
and all probably are not going to get a bye.
(01:06:59):
That's what the loss to Texas cost Texas A and
M two things, a chance to appear in the SEC
Championship for the first time in school history, and there's
a lot of long run fans who are kind of
lording that over them.
Speaker 2 (01:07:10):
Second year in a row, yeah, yeah, second year in
a row.
Speaker 1 (01:07:14):
That losing to the Rodge rival cost him an opportunity
to play for an SEC title. Now, there are many
who support Texas A and M, so you know, the
bigger picture is still out there. The bigger picture is
winning the college football playoff and they are correct about that.
But the Aggies are going to have to turn it
the hard way. You know, they're they're not going to
(01:07:35):
get a bye. They will get a home playoff game,
though I can't see them dropping below seven, and they
can fall as far as eight and still get a
home playoff game, although an eight to nine matchup, maybe
a rematch with Notre Dame or an eight nine matchup
maybe with Oklahoma, who they didn't see during the regular season,
(01:07:56):
would be a lot more difficult than if they got
the Boy and or even if they were the five.
Like Tepper was saying, and you're playing North Texas, I
think it was Kyle Bonagura has it as North Texas
against Texas A and M and his projections. So there
is a difference, no doubt about it. But they have
the security of knowing that they're in and the long worns,
(01:08:20):
of course, are on the outside looking at right now,
and it looks like it's probably going to stay that way,
that they're not going to have an opportunity to get
into the playoffs. We'll find out more obviously tonight with
I think it's at six o'clock tonight with the college
Football Playoff Show. Let's hear from Lane Kiffen, the new
(01:08:40):
head coach of the LSU Tigers, who at his news
conference yesterday was talking about first and foremost was money
the deciding factor. Listen to this, I.
Speaker 11 (01:08:55):
Said, through the process, Okay, I'm never going to make
a decision on money. And I'm telling you right now,
I don't know what my contract is here that's not
very financially responsible.
Speaker 2 (01:09:08):
Okay, I'm sure it's really good.
Speaker 10 (01:09:10):
Okay, I don't know what it is, nor did I
know what the other places what the numbers were, because
I said in the beginning, I told Jimmy Sexton, don't
tell me the numbers.
Speaker 11 (01:09:22):
Okay, I want to make a decision that has nothing
to do with money for me. Now tell me the
numbers and the plan for what the money is for
the players, because that's everything in that area to me.
Speaker 1 (01:09:37):
Now, Paul fineball, a fine baumb called total bs on
that what do you call it? But one of the
most disingenuous things a coach can say. You don't know
what the money is. Come on, you'll know that it's
thirteen million a year for seven years.
Speaker 2 (01:09:52):
You don't know that.
Speaker 1 (01:09:54):
With escalator clauses and you get bonus money depending on
how successful ole Miss is in the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (01:10:00):
You don't know that. Come on, bonus money.
Speaker 3 (01:10:03):
And then oh okay, now Charlie Weiss Junior, go back
and coach.
Speaker 2 (01:10:06):
Oldness for the playoffs. Exactly if you saw this when
he was leaving.
Speaker 1 (01:10:14):
U there were fans lining the road leading to the
private airport in Oxford, and they were not blowing kisses
and saying.
Speaker 2 (01:10:24):
Goodbye and waving and touching their hearts.
Speaker 1 (01:10:27):
No, they were flipping him the one fingered salute, and
they were cursing at him and saying all kinds of stuff,
and they were still angry as he got to the tarmac.
And there we heard about yesterday, we heard Marty Smith's journey,
his saga getting out for the tarmac to do the interview.
So there was a lot of anger expressed from Ole
(01:10:49):
Miss fans and a lot of excitement from LSU fans
when he got there. He discussed both ends of that spectrum.
Speaker 2 (01:10:57):
Man, it's the passion of the SEC. So I understand that.
Speaker 11 (01:11:01):
So I don't get emotional with it yesterday, like so
many people get emotional, you know, like that, and they
change like that because we spent six years there and
that airport scene and Knox and I driving and people
trying to run us off the road man and the
things they said to us, and then we got here
(01:11:21):
and we had been here for six minutes and how
we love your coach, you're the best ever.
Speaker 2 (01:11:26):
We don't have been here six minutes. We haven't done
anything for you yet. That's that's the SEC.
Speaker 11 (01:11:30):
And I've been around long enough to know that, and
it's just a passion of the SEC.
Speaker 2 (01:11:35):
And so I'm not upset at those.
Speaker 11 (01:11:38):
Reactions, you know, by fans, by people. And you know,
I think that people get really upset when you leave
somewhere because they feel hurt because you're doing a really
good job. They ain't going to the airport and driving
from all over okay to say those things and yellow
those things okay, and try to run you off the
(01:11:59):
road if you were doing bad. So, you know, I
just look at his passionate people in the SEC and
then it means they really liked what we were doing there.
And I think because of the way the players played,
because of the way the assistant coaches coached, and the
performance we put out in the field, okay, is why
we ended up in the situation that we were having
(01:12:20):
to decide from all these different places.
Speaker 1 (01:12:22):
Yeah, all of that is true, and it is true
that they wouldn't get so angry if he wasn't doing
a good job. They get angry in a different way
much earlier if it isn't going well. He did make
a call to ed ors Run, who won the national
title at LSU in nineteen and who had been at
Ole miss as well.
Speaker 2 (01:12:39):
I call to him as he drove in the Tiger Stadium,
actually were going by Tiger Stadium. I called one person.
Speaker 11 (01:12:46):
I called Edosroon and I said, hey, man, all I
can do is man, this place just makes me want
to talk like you right now.
Speaker 2 (01:12:54):
I did.
Speaker 11 (01:12:55):
I was like we were in the car and the
kids are in there, and I was like and I
was like, and the coaches and they're like, what are
you doing.
Speaker 7 (01:13:01):
I'm like, I don't know, I'm like channeling a head
right now. I was like, I'm feeling him.
Speaker 11 (01:13:04):
Like I rolled down the window and I was like,
go tig Us to the.
Speaker 2 (01:13:07):
Fans, and I'm like, so I called it.
Speaker 11 (01:13:10):
I don't know what's going on, man, but I'm feeling
you right now. And he's like coaching at the best
place in America.
Speaker 2 (01:13:18):
So I filled out so as I thought I would do.
I have no idea what your question was. I wonder
if he also slammed five red bulls, which is what
Orgron did before games there when he was.
Speaker 3 (01:13:29):
The Is that his famous pre game and that.
Speaker 1 (01:13:34):
Was a ritual that Orgron did that when he was
coaching l s u oh miss when he did that,
oh Okay used to slam five red bulls.
Speaker 2 (01:13:43):
Yeah. And then finally.
Speaker 1 (01:13:46):
About conversations with two former bosses he's had, Pete Carroll
and Nick Saban.
Speaker 11 (01:13:55):
I just talked to them and then it really was
apparent too. I felt like everybody that I talked to
outside of the state that I was in.
Speaker 2 (01:14:04):
All basically said the same thing. Okay, they all said.
Speaker 11 (01:14:09):
And you were going to regret it if you don't
take the shot and you don't go tell us you
it's the best job in America, is the best resources
and to win it, and it's obviously been done here
before by a number of people. And you know, Pete
Carroll really held he told me, you know that he
always told my dad that he'd look out for me,
(01:14:32):
and so when we were talking, he really channeled him,
you know, from knowing him for so long, and.
Speaker 7 (01:14:39):
He said, this is exactly what he would do.
Speaker 2 (01:14:41):
He would tell you, boy, go get it, go for it.
Speaker 11 (01:14:44):
And you know, coach Saban kind of coached at another
place in this conmerce.
Speaker 2 (01:14:49):
So I can't.
Speaker 7 (01:14:51):
I can't really say exactly what he said.
Speaker 11 (01:14:53):
But I'll say I'll say I think the world of
coach Saban and I respect him, and so there's a
reason I'm here.
Speaker 1 (01:15:04):
Yeah, Saban also won a national title at LSU, so
that he did, he knows, he knows that job.
Speaker 3 (01:15:11):
And all the tinfoil hats behind the scenes are saying
maybe he was waiting to see if Alabama would open
up before making this decision.
Speaker 2 (01:15:22):
Who knows all right.
Speaker 1 (01:15:26):
Coming up, we're gonna hear from Rory Harmon, the Texas
women's point guard who won AP National Player of the
Week honors for what she did in Las Vegas next
last week. And of course the Longhorns will play North
Carolina on Thursday, number twelve. North Carolina Texas number two
in the acc SEC Challenge, so.
Speaker 2 (01:15:45):
We'll hear from Rory.
Speaker 1 (01:15:46):
We're also gonna hear from Sean Miller before we get done,
as we continue on this Tuesday afternoon on Sports Radio
AM thirteen under the Zone in the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 12 (01:15:58):
Top of the arm.
Speaker 1 (01:15:59):
Wonderable bounce, half of the cutter and the shot rejected,
stood right up. Great job to block the shot of
Kelly by Booker at the Hartman for three white off.
Speaker 2 (01:16:10):
So she turned around and wanted the wall and said.
Speaker 13 (01:16:15):
That big sure from Marmone and the Moon that not
in Frisco.
Speaker 7 (01:16:20):
They just give it away, She said, give.
Speaker 2 (01:16:24):
It away now?
Speaker 12 (01:16:25):
How long We're not going to give away Rory Harmon
when she plays four polls despite the best efforts of
the King, George Strait sig one of his big hits.
Speaker 3 (01:16:37):
And she she's given away more assists now than anyone
in Texas position out.
Speaker 2 (01:16:42):
The dimes passed.
Speaker 1 (01:16:45):
Kemmy Ethridge in that national championship season of eighty six.
Uh and Kemmy, by the way, he was the head
coach of Washington State, sent a h did thing on
social media congratulating Rory for passing her with career numbers.
She assist umber seven seventy seven in that Texas winning
in Las Vegas. It was all part of a great
(01:17:07):
tournament she had where she was named the outstanding player.
She hit the game winning shot, She had a couple
of big shots. Scored twenty six points in the Summer
final win or over UCLA, and then in the championship
round hitting that big bucket there the baseline jumper with
seven tens of a second to go, and as such
was named the AP National Women's College Basketball National Player
(01:17:33):
of the Week award. And she did that not only
with the assist record and the twenty six points. She
leads the SEC and ranks third nationally in assist to
turnover ratio fifty assays twelve turnovers three eight games.
Speaker 2 (01:17:48):
This season.
Speaker 1 (01:17:48):
She also moved in the top five in Texas women's
basketball history and career steals with three hundred and one,
so she's got a shot to break that. Of course,
they played twelfth right North Carolina and the acc SC
challenging many on Thursday night. Rory was available today for
some Q and A, and somebody asked her, you know,
coming off the knee injury, how close does she feel
(01:18:11):
to where she was in that Yukon game where she
played so well prior to the knee injury, and how
is she holding up after the players are championship.
Speaker 14 (01:18:20):
I feel even better, honestly than I did when I
was playing at Yukon, which is a lot to say, honestly,
but I do feel pretty good, faster, stronger, all the
things that I was told I was going to be
eventually coming off this injury. Not being the same as
I was, but being better. So I feel pretty good.
(01:18:42):
After that the eighty minute stretch, I felt kind of tired.
It was just normal. That's human. That's when we're playing
super super hard. We're not in a We're not you know,
we're taking passes away, repressing. We're just playing really hard,
and so yeah, I felt a little tired. We had
a day off the other day, so I feel pretty
good today. But it is what it is you know,
(01:19:06):
you just have to now really just focus on taking
care of your body even more than before. But I've
been pretty good at that, so I'll be.
Speaker 2 (01:19:14):
Good, all right.
Speaker 1 (01:19:16):
Then she was asked what her mindset is and the
routine that could help her and has helped her sustain
sustain the success that she's had throughout the season.
Speaker 14 (01:19:26):
You would think, likes, what has changed? Like every year
you want to win and you want to win the
national championship, So like you're thinking, like what is different?
I think now what is different is like you can't
really take advantage of those those days, like practice days,
Like coach comes into practice, especially a lot during the
(01:19:48):
beginning the way beginning of the season, before we had
even just had a game, was like, how are you
going to practice today? Are you going to practice like
at the time we were ranking Ember four, It's like,
are you going to practice like you're number four? Or
you're going to practice like you're number twenty?
Speaker 9 (01:20:04):
You know?
Speaker 14 (01:20:05):
And so I think that has really stuck with me
when it comes to the mindset of like we, like
you said, we started started off really good, like we're
aid to know, but we have to practice like we're
two every day you have to practice like where we're
at every day. And I think our team has taken
(01:20:27):
a lot of pride in that because you know, sometimes
in practice you can catch yourself slipping up where you're like, oh, shoot,
this isn't this isn't the practice that we want it
to look like. Because you want to get one percent
every day. You don't want to waste to practice and
think you didn't get better or just went backwards. And
so I think that's what our main focus is. And
I honestly, like I I believe it's just our leadership, Like,
(01:20:50):
not just me. I think we've all just like really
like we care that much. Like they're everyone on the
team is really invested, no matter what their role is.
Is like we're really invested on winning because we know
we're capable of it. But yeah, I really think that's
that's the mindset that we've been carrying lately.
Speaker 2 (01:21:09):
All Right.
Speaker 1 (01:21:10):
A similar question, she was asked, how about this journey
that she personally has gone on and her mindset and
what has taught her to grow as a player and
an individual.
Speaker 14 (01:21:20):
Honestly, I felt like I grew up pretty fast, starting
off when I was a freshman, started as a freshman.
I played a lot of minutes as a freshman. He
put a lot of you know, accountability and responsibility on
me for a team, and I had just got out
of high school. And so I think, like I always say,
like he put me into the fire, which is not
(01:21:41):
like a bad thing, but you know, for someone to
be able to grow you, you have to go through
growing pains to grow, and that's exactly what I went
through my freshman year. And so like yours, obviously on
top of the years, you know, you go through such
a life like a it's it sounds dramatic, but it's
a life changing like injury that then at that point,
(01:22:05):
now you're like, I'm not playing basketball. Now, I have
to figure out who I am outside of basketball.
Speaker 15 (01:22:11):
Now.
Speaker 14 (01:22:11):
I have to still be there for my team, still
be the leader that they need me to be while
in basketball. So I feel like, unfortunately we all, like you,
it comes, adversity comes. But I think that's what truly
has like helped me grow. Being uncomfortable, making mistakes, like
doing things that you honestly hate going through are the
(01:22:31):
things that are going to help you the most. Honestly,
So I think, yeah, I look back and I think
back to how I was when I was eighteen. I
thought I was like, oh, I'm pretty smart, I feel
pretty mature. Like No, I was not. I was not
because looking at myself now, I just I just feel
(01:22:53):
like a completely different person with everything that I've been
through here.
Speaker 1 (01:22:57):
So yeah, makes a big difference there. This thing about
playing South Carolina. They played the game Cocks four times
last year, twice in the regular season. South Carolina kind
of drubbed them.
Speaker 2 (01:23:12):
Early.
Speaker 1 (01:23:13):
It was in January in conference play. Texas won the
rematch in Austin in February. Then they met in the
SEC Championship game in March and South Carolina won that,
and then they met in the Final four in South
Carolina won that. The three South Carolina wins were really
decisive then, and the long Worns one home court win
(01:23:34):
was a competitive game in Texas pulled away late. The
game that they played the other day was back and
forth pretty much the way. Texas did have an eight
point lead at one point, then South Carolina got hot.
They got up eight at fifty to forty two, and
then the Long Worns outscored them fourteen. I guess it
would have been sixty to fifty two. They outscored them
fourteen to four to win the basketball game. So maybe
(01:23:57):
a little bit of end that they're both picked in
the top two. They have in the last couple of years.
They also met in the Elite eight a few years
ago in the alamodome Vic Schaffer's first year.
Speaker 2 (01:24:06):
And I was at that game. Were you really?
Speaker 10 (01:24:08):
Yep?
Speaker 1 (01:24:08):
I was too barely. I was about one hundred and
fifty feet from the floor. I closer than you when
they I think you probably were. You definitely were if
you were there. Were you there for the Sweet sixteen
game when they played Maryland?
Speaker 2 (01:24:19):
No, I went to the Elite Okay, all right.
Speaker 1 (01:24:20):
The Maryland game, they had us on the concourse level.
We were out two hundred and fifty feet from the floor.
Actually had used binoculars at times. And then they moved
us around for the Elite eight game to about one
hundred feet from the floor something like that. One hundred
and fifty It felt a lot closer, even though we weren't,
you know, right up on it. But anyway, so they
(01:24:40):
played quite a bit lately, and Rory Harman was asked
this budding rivalry, what does it mean to her? And
does she think that it brings out the best in
both teams when you.
Speaker 14 (01:24:52):
Get picked the top. Both teams were picked top to
win the league, like it's obviously becomes like a robbery,
like who's going to win? We had four chances last year,
we had one this year. And I think playing them
so early, I think it just it is nice to
like figure out engage, like how your team is, Like
you know, when you play such an like an SEC
(01:25:13):
team like them, and obviously a league is so competitive,
but I think it just it just helps us in
the long run. Like I'm pretty sure South Carolina where uh,
they're just they're they're like, you know what, this is November,
Like we're learning, like everyone's learning right now, and fortunately
we were able to learn with our wins. But they're
(01:25:34):
just such a tough team like that. That rivalry is
just obviously between the coaches are very good, but you know,
you make a rivalry whenever two teams are just really
really good and they're probably picked at the top of
the league.
Speaker 2 (01:25:48):
So yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:25:50):
She was also asked about this career assist record, now
passing camiet Effort. She was a National Player of the
Year that year to uh to get to the career
or a syst mark, and what does it mean to
be a part of Texas history.
Speaker 14 (01:26:04):
In that perspective, it's such a like great school, like
not even you know, sports and whatnot, like academically, it's
just it just has so much presence in the world.
Like I truly think this is the best school to
be at. Obviously it helps it that it's really close
to home for me, but I couldn't see myself anywhere else.
(01:26:28):
But as far as the history, it's just like it
just goes down deep. Like you said, this is a
record that was that was forty years ago, and we
still hold on to those like things. We still hold
on to those records and traditions and to be able
forty years forward now to be able to get this
(01:26:52):
record and now my name is at the top of it,
like like now I've considered a part of Texas history,
Like I'm a part of the University of Texas women's
basketball team history. And that just feels really good. You know,
I don't really pay that much attention to individual accolades,
(01:27:13):
but when you like come down in history and you're
able to do something like that, like it truly does
feel like really good, Like I feel really good about
myself to be able to do that, and like I said,
I can't do that with anyone else around me, like
I have played with such great players along the side
to help me do that. But that everything means so
(01:27:35):
much more here, like it, we don't just great people
in our past haven't done great things. We're like, all right, well,
let's just move on to the next generation. Like no,
like we truly do care about the people who've done
great things.
Speaker 1 (01:27:47):
Before us, Okay, And so to further extrap like that is,
she had much time to think about her legacy and
her place in all of this in Texas history.
Speaker 14 (01:27:56):
Honestly, I think about it now, especially realizing how close
I was to you know, with my twelve hundred and
seven hundred, which I don't overlook that at all. That
was such a great thing to be a part of, too.
But now I'm an all time assist leader like you don't.
I can't wait. I can't wait to like think about
(01:28:16):
how much I've meant to this university and how my
legacy obviously is still continuing since I'm still playing. But
I I think the sooner I realize how much it
means and how grateful I should be about it. I
think the better it is and the better I'll be,
the better I'll play, honestly, because I think I think
(01:28:39):
when you're super grateful about things like good things happen,
you're you're aware about certain things, you're accountable about certain things,
you work harder, you have more positive mindset. And so yeah,
I gotta I can't. I can't wait till I'm older
to be like, oh wow, Like no, I really I
see now, I see now that this is this is
a pretty big deal and that it's I'm just really
(01:29:01):
honored to be a part of it.
Speaker 1 (01:29:02):
All Right, there you go. That's from Riy Harmon. Coming up,
we'll hear from Sean Miller, the Texas Men's head coach.
They have their acc SEC Challenge game tomorrow night against Virginia,
and we'll continue on thirteen Under the Zone.
Speaker 9 (01:29:19):
We're back to the Craig Way Show. Have a message
for Craig share by using the talkback feature on the iHeartRadio.
Speaker 16 (01:29:32):
Have a little old bands from Texas. You know when
I was working this tour for zz Tom that Eliminator
tour work shows at what was then the Sum of
the Houston.
Speaker 2 (01:29:49):
Now it's Joel Osteen's Church.
Speaker 1 (01:29:53):
And then work at Reunion Arena in Dallas y Doubles
Center and Oklahoma. We sold T shirts and the long
sleeved T shirts which we called jerseys back then, some
other things, and we sold these loomed you might say,
(01:30:14):
chrome plated key chains like in the video the Lemonar
Git and we sold them for like ten bucks apiece,
and we couldn't keep them in stock, kept something. And
they were so cheap. Several of them broke even just
taking them out of the box. But people were eating
them up. They were buying them up there.
Speaker 2 (01:30:31):
We needed tails from the tour. Yeah, yeah, well there's
a lot of those, all right.
Speaker 1 (01:30:36):
So on the on the text on somebody's the North
Texas fan said, oh, I really want to play Tech
the drama North Texas has a decent record against the
Red Raiders. They do, but I'm looking this up. Yeah,
but I would say be careful what you wish for.
Last time they went to was last year, and didn't
Tech score like sixty nine points on them or something.
Speaker 2 (01:30:54):
Sixty six to twenty one.
Speaker 3 (01:30:55):
Last time that the Mean Green beat the Red Raiders
nineteen ninety nine.
Speaker 1 (01:31:01):
Yeah, so it's been all I did a game out there.
I want to say it was in the eighties that
North Texas won out there in Lubbock.
Speaker 2 (01:31:10):
Yep.
Speaker 3 (01:31:10):
That would have been either you know, it would have
been nineteen eighty eight, Yeah, twenty nine to four game.
Speaker 2 (01:31:17):
Yep, remember that one in early September. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:31:20):
So I would say this, I would like North Texas
chances against them more than say, if they had to
go to Ole Miss.
Speaker 2 (01:31:32):
You know, I actually I don't know. I think text
defense is legit.
Speaker 1 (01:31:36):
They are, That's what I'm saying. It might be difficult,
even though North Texas is the number one offense in
the country.
Speaker 2 (01:31:41):
It'd be fun. Yeah, it'd be fun to see that.
You know who I'd want? What's it? A and M? Okay? Yeah, yeah,
probably moved the ball in the eggies And.
Speaker 3 (01:31:49):
You're gonna you're gonna get a motivated, angry Old Miss team.
Speaker 2 (01:31:53):
Whoever gets that.
Speaker 1 (01:31:54):
You're going to get a motivated angry A and M team.
Speaker 2 (01:31:56):
That's the thing. I think you'll get that as well.
Speaker 1 (01:31:58):
Uh, let's hear from log Warren's head basketball coach Sean Miller.
They played tomorrow night in the acc SEC Challenge and
coming off the finish and the malory Invitational. They shot
the ball really well throughout the course of the event,
(01:32:19):
and he was asked what the key was to shooting
well as the tournament progressed.
Speaker 4 (01:32:23):
Yeah, you know, in the second half against Seamanad, we
went ten for fifteen, and you know, I think that
second half gave a couple guys on our team just
some confidence seeing the ball go through the net and
having that feeling. I sensed, you know, from my early
days here in late in the spring, throughout the summer,
(01:32:44):
that we have a number of different guys that could
shoot better than they maybe started off this season shooting.
That happens sometimes, especially when you have a new coach,
new system, right style. Everybody's trying to get acclimated and
more comfortable. But that second half against Shamanad, I thought
led into NC State. NC State's general way of playing
(01:33:07):
the game is they give up a lot of three
point attempts. We knew that going into the game, and
if our guys did a good job capitalizing on those
those open shots.
Speaker 1 (01:33:18):
One thing we've seen is Kendal Weaver really improved both
with his outside shot and his total overall for a game.
Speaker 4 (01:33:23):
You know, first, Kendall, Kendall is just a pleasure to coach.
His attitude and his effort, his unselfish nature really in
everything that we've done, from our weight room to the
summer workouts, and obviously now we've gotten through a lion's
share of our non conference season. You know, he's the
same every day and that consistency, that work ethic that
(01:33:47):
wins out. And you mentioned rebounding. You know, Kendall at
his size maybe the best rebounder that I've seen. You know,
his ability to get a defensive rebound in traffic, big
rebounds that our team needs and then take that rebound
and convert it into transition opportunity, whether it be for
him or our team, is I think one of the
(01:34:09):
one of the several or many things that I think
our team is doing well right now. But you know,
his defense to offense, but his ability to rebound as
a guard, and you know all all teams love guards
who defensive rebound. It's that hidden stat sometimes that you know,
really just it goes towards winning. You know, it's being
a playmaker, not a not just a player or not
(01:34:31):
somebody who just scores points but does everything, and you
know Kendall is certainly that type of player for our team.
Speaker 2 (01:34:37):
He was also asked about Nick Cody.
Speaker 1 (01:34:39):
Cody had sustained a groin injury prior to the game
against Writer and cam Den. Heidi win in the lineup
and cam hasn't come out of lineup he had He's
had a couple of really good games afterwards. So as
a result of that, Coach Miller's asked Nick Cody is
is this now injury still related or coaching decision about
(01:35:00):
him not starting?
Speaker 4 (01:35:01):
Nick Cody is a young player that we believe in
his effort level, his attitude, his daily disposition, his competitive
spirit all have to improve.
Speaker 1 (01:35:13):
Yeah, and that was the deal coming off of the injury.
They wanted to see him, you know, have a little
more fire in the belly, so to speak. How did
playing three games and three nights help this team mesh
all the while going through this process?
Speaker 4 (01:35:31):
You know, the challenge of three games in three days
is the trip itself, you know, it's it's judging the
maturity of your group. Can you handle practicing here at
Austin knowing you have a long trip ahead and do
a great job in that practice, and then you know
the trip itself from the film, You know, everybody focuses
on the three games, But just think about the preparation
(01:35:52):
in between leaving a game that you have a heartbreaking loss,
learning from it, growing and being equally ready the next afternoon,
and then doing it again a third time. So I
think you learn a lot about the growth and the
maturity of your group, the leadership of your group. Who
can handle not playing well, who can handle not playing
as much as they want? You know, who can handle
(01:36:14):
playing really well? But yet your team lost, right, So
there's a lot of factors that I think allows us
to grow and learn about each other. We certainly know
a lot more about our team eric today than we
did before we left. And I do think that our
win against NC State was a big moment for us
because they're a very good team. They're going to win
(01:36:34):
a lot of games, and just to be able to
play them in that third game, I think says a
lot about our character and our resiliency to be ready
for that game.
Speaker 1 (01:36:43):
Yeah, all right, So they go from one acc team
to another. They get ready for Virginia side as he
prepare for the Cavaliers.
Speaker 4 (01:36:49):
In terms of Virginia, their freshman is You're right, you
could see that he's not a seventeen or eighteen year
old young guy. He's experienced, he's seasoned, plays the right way,
very smart, and I believe this. I think he's one
of the best freshmen that's playing in college basketball, and
he makes Virginia a lot better as a team. We're
(01:37:10):
playing a very good team. We're playing him at home.
It's a big game for our season and for our team.
Speaker 1 (01:37:19):
Yeah, he's talking about Tyster Ritter from Belgium who's averaging
eighteen points and six rebounds per game.
Speaker 2 (01:37:25):
They're freshmen, so that will post a John.
Speaker 1 (01:37:27):
We'll hear more about that coming up tomorrow from Sean
Miller and some specifics on that matchup and also for
what they have coming up after that, because they're going
to have a big matchup going to Yukon to take
on Yukon the following week on Friday.
Speaker 2 (01:37:45):
So they play Kansas tonight at the Fog. Yeah, seeing
take some notes on that as well.
Speaker 1 (01:37:51):
All Right, we'll be back to wrap up today's edition
of the program right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen
under the Zone. It's going to be a real busy
day tomorrow. Will tell you all about that. Stabulus will
be with back here Onmozone and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 2 (01:38:20):
That flu keeping you up?
Speaker 7 (01:38:21):
Did you take niqual intense flu?
Speaker 2 (01:38:24):
Nah? I got this? Mm okay, I don't got this.
Speaker 17 (01:38:29):
Yeah, you need niqual intense flu. Undo your flu with

Speaker 1 (01:43:13):
So okay, we're heading down the home stretch of this
and let me tell you what we have coming up
(01:43:36):
for you tomorrow tomorrow, and I know you, as long
worn football fans, are fully aware of this.
Speaker 2 (01:43:44):
Tomorrow's National Signing Day.
Speaker 8 (01:43:45):
You know.
Speaker 1 (01:43:45):
It's weird how that used to be the big day
was always the first Wednesday in February. Always, And I
always told this story about when I was working in
Dallas and I was Brad Sham's producer for his talk show.
It was much as same role that you're in right
now for me, Jake, But National Signing Day in those days,
(01:44:08):
like I said, there was only one and it was
in February, first Wednesday in February. Well, that's right, Smack
dab in the middle of conference playing basketball and Brad
was the play by play voice for SMU at the time,
and George Dunham, who works at the Ticket now, he
and I alternated as the analyst for Brad. So I
(01:44:29):
usually did the weeknight games and George would do the
weekend games. But Brad said, I need you to stay
back and do the talk show because it's National Signing Day,
and he was going to Lubbock with George to do
Tech SMU against Texas Tech.
Speaker 2 (01:44:43):
And so I always remember and I'm.
Speaker 1 (01:44:45):
Scrambling and I'm pulling off ap wire copy with all
the sinees had all of that kind of stuff, and
I had given him a recommendation for a restaurant the
fifty yard line of the Lubbock Old Traditional Steakhouse had
these great little blueberry muffins and all this stuff.
Speaker 2 (01:45:01):
And my hair is on fire.
Speaker 1 (01:45:03):
I'm ten minutes to air and I'm pulling copy and
all this stuff, and the phone rings back in the
deal and of course this is in the day's preceding
cell phones. I'm picking up sports, says Craig, and I
hear Brad go, I just want you to know that
we've dined on the little blueberry muffins and I'm at
a great steak and I told him go get Yeah. Anyway,
(01:45:23):
I said something unmentionable and he laughed about it. Get lost.
Speaker 8 (01:45:27):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:45:27):
Yeah, it was something like that. So anyway, that used
to be the big day.
Speaker 1 (01:45:32):
Now the big day there's that Wednesday in February is
still around, but the big day really is that Wednesday
in December, the first Wednesday in December. So it will
be tomorrow. So we're going to be on campus and
we're going to do the show. From over on campus
and we'll bring you a news conference live with log
worn's head coach Steve Sarkeisha. So we'll bring you the
(01:45:54):
news conference with start live from the UT campus tomorrow
as part of our show. Because the news conference is
going to happ right smack dab in the middle of
the show, like around three o'clock or so.
Speaker 2 (01:46:03):
They're finalizing all the details.
Speaker 1 (01:46:05):
But we'll bring you that news conference tomorrow as part
of our presentation from campus. So we'll do that, and
that's going to lead up to obviously a big basketball
game at Moody As. It'll be acc SEC Challenge Texas
against Virginia. That's a seven to thirty start time and
(01:46:25):
then tip off around eight fifteen in the eight fifteen
to eight twenty range.
Speaker 2 (01:46:29):
You'll hear it here on thirteen.
