Speaker 1 (00:01):
And with that it's on the Mississippi State one more
on the road trip. Get after Do and everybody walking
to the program here on sports Radio AM thirteen under
the Zone in the iHeartRadio app. I'm Craig Way. Glad
to have you with us on this Monday. Hope that
your day is off and your work week for those
of you do the regular Monday the Friday thing is
(00:21):
off to a good start plenty to get to on
the program this afternoon coming up this of course being
a Long Orange Monday, that means that we bring you
head coach Steve Sarkeashan's weekly news conference live every Monday
morning during football season, that we did this morning at
eleven thirty or Long Orange Monday. Programming began at eleven
(00:44):
o'clock this morning with my cardball hards and myself over
on campus, and we brought you the press conference with
Coach Sark that came your way at eleven thirty, and
we'll hear the comments from that press conferen and from
head coach Steve Sarkeisha coming up here in the program.
(01:04):
Also coming up in the program, in addition to hearing
from Sark throughout the course of the afternoon, a recap
of the weekend in college football, more coach dismissals, also
the NFL to review as well that Alice Cowboys getting
the win of the Washington Commanders. We'll hear from Brian Schottenheimer,
the head coach of the Cowboys. We'll hear that during
the course of the program as well. In the four
(01:27):
o'clock hour, Gene Watson, our resident baseball insider from the
Chicago White Sox front office, joins us and well, it's
been a couple of weeks since we've had a chance
to visit with Geno, so his thoughts on both the
American League and National League Championship Series and LCS of
(01:48):
courses in the books. With the Dodgers having finished their
sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday night and one
of his stort Friday night that was for Shoe Aotani
with the six shutout innings with no walks and ten
strikeouts on the mound and three home runs from show Hey.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
So that's never been done before.
Speaker 1 (02:07):
We'll get Gino's thoughts on that and a preview of
tonight's Game seven of the ALCS between the Blue Jays
and the Mariners. The Blue Jays winning last night six
to two, So it's down.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
To one game. And what of a bizarre.
Speaker 1 (02:24):
End over end, back and forth series is that that
has been with Seattle taking the first two games in Toronto,
Toronto taking the next two games in Seattle, Seattle winning
game five at home, Toronto winning game six at home
last night. So each team is one and two on
their home field in this ALCS, and tonight is game seven.
(02:47):
The winner will advance to the World Series to take
on the Dodgers starting on Friday night. If Toronto does
hold servant home and wins, then the Blue Jays would
have home field advantage for the World Series. They finished
with slightly better record than Los Angeles, so they would
have home field advantage. The first two games would be
at Rogers Center in Toronto, then it would shift to
(03:07):
Los Angeles for two at least maybe three if a
fifth game is necessary, and then back to Toronto for
any remaining game six and seven. If, however, Seattle should
win tonight, then Los Angeles has the home field advantage.
The Dodgers would host games one and two in La
Seattle to host game three four if necessary, Game five,
and then any remaining game six or seven would be
(03:29):
back in La So anyway, that kind of sets the
table for the program. So a lot to get to
on the program. Of course, Jay Herman is the producer
of this program as well. Your weekend other than yesterday's
proceedings from Jerry World go all right for you since
you are the resident Commander's fan in this building.
Speaker 3 (03:47):
Yeah, it went swimmingly up until the Commanders sank and
not only did you lose Jaydon Daniels as kind of
a strange game for Commander fans. One minute, you're in
a high scoring shootout knowing the down defense. I don't
think there was any Commander fans giving up hope down
by twelve at halftime, and then on one play you
both lose the ballgame with a strip sack, and then
(04:09):
you lose your quarterback potentially for a few weeks with
an MRI coming on Jayden Daniel's hamstring. So it's one
of those weird games where all the air got let
out of the balloon at once.
Speaker 1 (04:20):
I also lost my superflex Fantasy additional quarterback when that happened,
and he had posted eighteen points for me at the
time prior to the injury, and so we'll see. But
I do have I have Daniel Jones, I said, as
a fill.
Speaker 4 (04:34):
In, So these are champagne problem.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
Yeah, yeah, it would, it would. It'll be all right.
Speaker 1 (04:38):
We'll see if I hold on because I have like
about a thirty point lead. But the guy I'm playing
is four guys left because of tonight's doubleheader, including Sam Darnold,
So we'll see. We'll see how all that goes. But anyway,
the college football week and of course in these parts
(04:58):
noteworthy for the Longhorns escape and it was an escape
in lexing Kentucky beat in Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday night.
Also Georgia with a big fourth quarter comeback to beat
Ole Miss when Ole Miss had a nine point lead
going into the fourth quarter.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
There was that.
Speaker 1 (05:17):
The weekend also marked by upsets top ten undefeated ranked
teams losing, Miami losing at home to Louisville and Texas
Tech on the road at Arizona State losing. So that
kind of opens things up a little more in the
Big Twelve as well. It also, listening to the CFP
(05:38):
experts of college football playoff experts talk about it.
Speaker 5 (05:42):
It.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
Resolutely damages the Big twelve's hopes for getting two teams
into the playoff that it might wind up only being
the one if you know, without an unbeaten team overall
running the table and going through it. We'll see how
it plays out out on that. And the SEC right
now continues to be a bit of a jumble what
(06:04):
with all mislosing. That's another top ten unbeaten losing because
they lost at Georgium. And you have Alabama and Texas
A and M, who have kind of emerged as the
two best teams in the SEC right now, but there's
still games to be played. Oklahoma is clearly still a contender.
Georgia obviously is still a contender. Missouri is still a contender.
(06:25):
The log warrants hope they're a contender. And by the way,
Vanderbilt's a contender. And you know, they have the one
conference loss that's are only lost. That one loss was
at Alabama. Otherwise they've been darn good. And guess who
comes to town a week from this Saturday for an
eleven a m kick. The Vanderbilt Commodorees will be at DKR.
Speaker 6 (06:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (06:44):
The days of disrespecting Vanderbilt I think are done. And
this is a team that I think is very, very legitimate.
They were the better team throughout that game on Saturday
against LSU, deserving of the win. It's going to be
a big challenge for Texas.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
I had my television in the hotel room in Lexington
right toward the end of ESPN College Game Day, and
I'm kind of usually in and out whether I'm watching
it or not have it on or whatever, and I
was struck by something Nick Saban said, and simple water,
that's not what Nick Saban's that's what simple water.
Speaker 2 (07:14):
There.
Speaker 1 (07:17):
He when they were making their picks, he picked LSU,
and he said, I'm having a hard time thinking of
Vanderbilt as anything other than what they used to be,
you know. In other words, well that just like you said,
it's it's not the same Vanderbilt.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
It's not your fathers or your grandfather's Vanderbilt.
Speaker 1 (07:37):
It was first time since nineteen fifty seventy five years
that they've started six and one, so it'll be or
are they seven in one?
Speaker 2 (07:47):
They seven and one and the sixth and one?
Speaker 1 (07:48):
Okay, uh so first time is in nineteen fifty seventy
five years since they've done that, So that's worth keeping
track of. And and then the like we said the
were other surprises. Memphis was an unbeaten that lost, so
that does you would say, well, that opens it up
(08:09):
in the Mountain West for a team to get in
as the highest rank group of six G six teams
to get in, except UNLV lost and so they're they're
no longer unbeaten, so it's still up in the air.
I would say probably the odds favor the American Conference
(08:32):
champion drawing that bid a being as the highest rated
G six team, whether it's still Memphis, or whether it's
Navy who's undefeated, or Tulane, which is still there in
the possibility of being there. At North Texas, which bounced
back with a win even though they've got one big loss.
But South Florida probably is the lead dog in that
(08:55):
league with the best chance to win that bid. But
there's still games to be played there in terms of
the G six matter. Locally tough for Texas State a
double overtime loss at Marshall. It was about eighty miles
to the east of US down I sixty four or
just across the state line in the Ohio River into Huntingdon,
West Virginia, where they lost to Marshall on double overtime,
and that is now threatening Texas State's opportunity to be
(09:20):
a bowl team, to be able even to get to
six wins for a bolting, same thing for UTSA after
getting blasted by North Texas fifty five seventeen to even
qualify for a bowl. Those things are now in jeopardy.
So there was a lot happening over the course of
the weekend in the football. All right, coming up, we're
gonna hear from Long Worn's head coach Steve Sarkasian from
(09:43):
the press conference that was aired live this morning here
on the station, So we'll do that. As always, we
invite your feedback. Now, I'm going to go a couple
of directions with this. First of all, anytime you want
to text the program, you're welcome to do so. You
text the word Texas immediately following the word Texas you
(10:05):
just put in your question or comments. You text the
word Texas follow by your question or comment to eight
one five three zero. So text the word Texas follow
by your question or comment to eight one five three zero.
Standard messaging and data rates may apply. There's always that
and we will, you know, obviously, refer to your questions.
We do have the talkback feature and on the talkback
(10:28):
feature which uses our talkback microphone, what you do is
you download the free iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (10:35):
Really easy to do that.
Speaker 1 (10:36):
So you download the iHeartRadio app if you haven't already
done so on your smartphone. Then you search AM thirteen
under the zone and immediately AM thirteen zon pops up
in like your little magnifying search magnifying glass search window
or your regular search window, whatever it is.
Speaker 2 (10:52):
It pops up.
Speaker 1 (10:54):
When it pops up, we suggest you make it a
preset because that will help you, especially when it comes
to contesting with a couple of things. It'll help you
circumvent some of the line on that. And then also
you can jump right in with your with your message
(11:15):
to us, so that when it comes up, you're going
to see two buttons. You'll see a white one with
a little white arrow. You're going to see a red
button with a white microphone. You tap that button. That's
our talkback microphone talk back feature, and you can leave
us up to thirty seconds on a message. Now, we've
got two different contests we're going to do this week.
(11:36):
One is for Texas Stars hockey tickets, and there will
be a keyword.
Speaker 2 (11:41):
For that every day, like we do with the concert tickets.
Speaker 1 (11:44):
So if you're interested in winning tickets for the Texas
Stars hiking, we'll tell you what the keyword is.
Speaker 2 (11:48):
A little later on and you do the talkback feature.
Speaker 1 (11:52):
Just pull up the iHeartRadio app search AM thirteen under
the zone. It pops up. You'll see the red button,
white microphone. You tap it and you leave us message
up to thirty seconds and that has to include the keyword.
Speaker 2 (12:04):
That's one contest. We've got another one.
Speaker 1 (12:08):
This was something I came up with thinking about the
fact where Texas is going this week. The Long Words
are going to play in Starkville, Mississippi. They'll play there
for the first time since nineteen ninety one, and they'll
play Mississippi State. Jay Carman, do you know what Mississippi
State fans are famous for doing at football games? More
(12:30):
cow bell? Craig more cow bell? Yeah, lots of cow bell.
So here's what we're going to do this week. We're
going to have a contest where and you got to
do this on the talk back feature. I'm not asking
you to sing, I'm not asking you to play an instrument.
What I am asking you to do but you're not
banning them from singing.
Speaker 2 (12:51):
Would rather they didn't.
Speaker 1 (12:52):
Okay, all right, What I want to hear from you
is what you think the best cow Bell song of
all time?
Speaker 2 (13:00):
Now I'm going to stop you right now. Don't say
don't fear the Reaper.
Speaker 1 (13:03):
That's already out of the equation because of the S
and L skit it's the easy go to, so you
have to you have to remove that from the equation.
So what I want to know from you is what
is the best song featuring cow Bell? And you leave
us a message on the talkback microphone, you say I
think the best cow Bell song is and then you
(13:24):
just say, whatever it is, we'll announce the winner next Monday.
The winner of the contest gets two tickets to the
Vanderbilt game. Oh the good prize. So you get two
tickets to the Texas Vanderbilt game. But but, but even
though the prize is for the Vanderbilt game, which happens
to be the next home game, the contest pertains to
(13:46):
this week's opponent, Mississippi State. So I want to know
what is the best song of all time that features
cow Bell?
Speaker 3 (13:55):
I have submissions, but you want me to just hold
off on all of them to give everyone a fair shot.
Speaker 1 (14:00):
That's exactly what you need to do. I've got my
own ideas as well, and I will tell you this, uh,
you know when we when we get to uh, when
we get to next week, we'll play some of them.
Now I'm going to be out Friday traveling to Startville.
But you have all this week to do this. And
(14:20):
then on Monday, we're going to play that. We'll we'll
we'll play the song of the winning submission. UH will
also play the voice. And I should also tell you this.
There will be many of you who probably have the
same idea about a song. That's why that that's part
of the reason why I've removed Don't Fear the Reaper
by Blue Oyster Cult.
Speaker 2 (14:38):
That's out of the picture. That's not eligible.
Speaker 1 (14:41):
But many of you may have the same idea about
the same song. And that's okay. But I will tell
you and this is where the talkback feature really can
come to your defense. The first person on the talkback
feature to suggest the song that winds up being the
one we pick.
Speaker 2 (15:01):
Is going to be the winner.
Speaker 4 (15:02):
That's right. We can see there may be.
Speaker 1 (15:05):
There may be thirty of you who have the same idea,
but whoever gets in first with that, if that's the
song we pick, it's got to be the song we pick.
Speaker 2 (15:14):
Don't pick a different one.
Speaker 3 (15:15):
Don't put yourself in a position a week from now
to think that was a song I picked, but then
you didn't submit it right now, you know, Yeah to
twenty in the afternoon.
Speaker 1 (15:24):
Yeah, So I mean, if you know one right now
that you think is the best, you go ahead and
submit it and it'll be in there. But it's not
a drawing. This is a contest where where we'll pick
the best song that invokes a cow bell and the
winning submission will get two tickets of the Vanderbilt game.
All right, up next, we'll hear from long wrt's head coach,
(15:44):
Steve Sarkisian when we continue on thirteen Under the Zone.
Here on a Long Worns Monday on sports Radio AM
thirteen under the Zone. Glad to have you with us
here on this Monday afternoon, launching into another week, and
so that means we launch into hearing from Long Wren's
coach Steeve Sarkaesian. We bring you his news conference live
every Monday morning at eleven thirty with our live coverage
(16:06):
beginning at eleven am from the UT campus with our
long Orange Monday presentation, and then during this program we
have it broken down into his individual thoughts and set
it up for you that way. So we start off
as always like he does his press conference with his
opening statement, you.
Speaker 7 (16:23):
Know Saturday's ballgame, you know, echo a lot of the
same things I said in the postgame. And that's not
always I can always say that, but there's some things
that are very true in some things that we're eye
opening when you look at the tape, I think, you know,
Mason Shipley again, what a what a performance, guys, eleven
of thirteen on the year, and his two misses are
from fifty five and fifty six, so tremendous performance. Ryan
(16:45):
Nibblett again continue, those were huge returns for us in
the game, and Jack boome easter tremendous job that Defensively,
we found ways to get stops when we needed to
have them, you know, and credit to Knentell. I thought
they had a decent plan to kind of move the football,
but our guys to get a fourth down stop on
(17:05):
the first drive of the game I thought was critical.
I thought our ability to pressure the quarterback when we
were disciplined in our rush lanes, showed up with five
sacks and hurries. When we got hurt, we got out
of our rush lanes, which led to the touchdown there,
the scramble touchdown. So definitely areas for improvement there. But
what a goal line stand at the end of the game.
(17:25):
You know, I think one of the unsung plays in
there is the play that gets them to the first
and goal is Jalen Gilbo getting getting them out of
bounds at the four yard line to give us a
chance to have that goal line stand. And then again
on second down, they run a little play action past
boutleg where Jalen stays disciplined to cover the tight end
in the flat, which forces the quarterback scramble to get
(17:48):
him on the ground and then inevitably the goal line stand.
Speaker 6 (17:51):
Some amazing efforts.
Speaker 7 (17:52):
Brad Spence, Travis Shaw, Jelani McDonald, Michael taff Leonge Lafowl.
I mean that Cole Brovard, bunch of guys with great
efforts there, I think offensively, you know, one thing that
I wasn't as aware of post game, But then you
look at the tate. You know, when we talked about
third downs. I was talking about third and longs after
(18:13):
the game. We actually were pretty effective in our third
and lungs. Where we were ineffective was third and one
to six. You know, we were one for seven on
third and one to six Saturday night, and that that's
where we have to We got to be productive. You know,
if we're going to trade to try to play really
complimentary football, controlling the game, you got to convert third
(18:34):
and ones, third and twos, third and fours, third and fives.
And we were ineffective in that area of the game Saturday,
which in turn didn't allow us to extend drives, didn't
allow us to keep the defense on the field, didn't
allow us to move the football to score more points.
And so that was an area where I definitely think
we need to improve. You know, we've made such an
(18:54):
emphasis on being better on third and long because we've
had so many.
Speaker 6 (18:58):
Well, we converted a few of those.
Speaker 7 (18:59):
We hit DeAndre for a big third down conversion, we
hit Ryan Wingo for a big third down conversion, Art
scrambles on another third and long. So we've got to
be more effective in the third and short and third
and medium range. You know, I was very disappointed in
myself in our ability to end the game with the
ball in our hands and kick a field goal to
(19:20):
win it. Late, we were in one mode to get
ourselves in the scoring range, and we got into that
mode and I did not do a good enough job
of communicating to the offense at that point we were
in field goal range. Now it was about staying in
bounds ensure that that game was going to end with
a kick from us, and we just have a you know,
we have the play where DeAndre goes out of bounds,
(19:42):
which allows them to preserve a time out because in reality,
the worst case scenario, they should have gotten the ball
back with somewhere between fifteen and eighteen seconds. And so
I don't mind the play call. I thought the play
call was good, the execution was good. And that's where
that point comes in for DeAndre to decide do I
get the first down or do I have to get down?
But I did not do a good enough job of
communicating that uh in that instance. You know, at the
(20:06):
end of the day, offensively, I've got to do a
better job. I've got to do a better job putting
all of our players in position to be successful. And
that's blocking people. That's throwing the ball to open people.
That's that's running routes precisely where they need to be.
So that's on nobody but me. And so that that's Uh.
When when you can look in the mirror first and say, okay,
I'm responsible to try to get this you know fixed
(20:28):
and get better at it, I'm very comfortable with that.
So as we look forward to Mississippi State, Jeff Levy
second season has done a really nice job. You know,
this is a much improved football team. Obviously a high
powered offense, you know, up tempo team. Uh that has
you know, knocked off Arizona State already at home this year,
I think, went to overtime with Tennessee already this year
(20:50):
at home and had a chance last week at Florida
to win that game without a without a turnover there
at the end of the game by Florida to to
seal the victory. So I said, high powered offense does
a nice job of balancing things. Got two good runners,
have two explosive receivers on the on the perimeter and
and Blake shape and is playing good football for them.
Speaker 5 (21:11):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (21:11):
And a defense that is that is you know, goes
and attacks the football, they create turnovers at a high
at a high rate. We've got to continue the trend
that we've been on. We've gone two straight games now
of protecting the football and that's part of playing complimentary
football that we're not putting our defense on any short fields.
And so we've got to do a great job of
that this week.
Speaker 6 (21:29):
But should be a.
Speaker 7 (21:30):
Great environment, be our four straight game away from dk R,
and we've got it. We've got to take pride and
in the way we perform on the road, and this
is going to be another challenge for us to go
do that.
Speaker 1 (21:40):
Okay, So Sark obviously mentioned the shortcomings on offense and
things of those nature, and then he was asked does
he see the offensive struggles as a short term fixable
issue or these long term things.
Speaker 7 (21:54):
I would probably say they're both right, you know, and
at any time, I think any issue can be fixed
short term and one of the easiest ways to fix
something if you're not running a specific scheme very.
Speaker 6 (22:07):
Well, you don't have to call it right.
Speaker 7 (22:09):
And we can we can gravitate more to things that
we do well, whether it's the run game, the past game,
the screen game, whatever that is. You know, I think
I think naturally, if you feel like, hey, we're not
adequate enough at a certain position, well you can protect
that guy in that position right now and you know,
monitor his.
Speaker 6 (22:27):
Development long term.
Speaker 7 (22:29):
Or you say we were to protect him now, but
we may need to do something in the off season,
or hey, you know what, we want to get better
at a scheme, we need to go study specific coaches
that are really good at it to say, hey, we
can get better at that in the off season, but
in the short term, maybe we just don't emphasize that
as much.
Speaker 1 (22:45):
Okay, Next, he was asked, how, you know, as the
play caller and the offensive coordinator, how does the head
coach critique the play caller in the offensive coordinator when
they're one in the same person.
Speaker 7 (22:59):
Like I do after every game, I look in the
mirror first, you know, and and I think a lot
of times, you know, human nature would say, hey, we
have a great offensive game that I don't critique myself.
Speaker 6 (23:09):
There's never a game.
Speaker 7 (23:10):
That I don't come out of or I think, you
know what, I probably would have called something different here
in or something different there, and this game was no different.
You know, one of the plays that I'm probably more
upset about myself with is the first play of overtime.
You know, we get a holding penalty on on Brandon Baker,
but I didn't need to risk that holding penalty predicated
(23:31):
off of them, you know, score not scoring it on
their session, And I didn't call a direct run, which
is really what I should have done in that instance.
Speaker 6 (23:41):
I went a little more game plan mode.
Speaker 7 (23:42):
I felt like we had an opportunity to create an
explosive play, but that puts stress on Brandon and that
style of run that we called has a has a
has an opportunity to be a negative type run.
Speaker 6 (23:54):
And so that was not a very good call in
the game at all.
Speaker 7 (23:57):
And it's easy to point to brand and get in
the hold, but in reality, that wasn't a good call
by me. So I can look at a lot of
different things within a game, good, bad, and different of
the result. But I'm always looking in the mirror first
to say, Okay, what could I have done differently? What
could I have done better? Not only for the office,
but for the team. And so I'm very comfortable doing that.
I've been doing this a long time and so it's
(24:18):
not something that's new for me.
Speaker 1 (24:19):
All Right, we'll hear more from Sara coming up by
the way to the text line, and Chuck in Houston
first to get on and said, Washington got that belt,
ask talking about the Dallas win.
Speaker 3 (24:32):
Oh okay, I thought he was talking about the Washington Huskies.
That was just my brain protecting myself from Chuck and Houston.
Speaker 2 (24:38):
Who is a Cowboys fan as well as a long
run fan.
Speaker 1 (24:40):
Yeah, and then the text her And like I said,
we always try to reply to all the somebody said,
please don't try to minimize texas horrific performance by alluding
to those teams that we're upset this past weekend. How
many of those teams had a total of eight first downs,
How many of those teams had only twenty minutes in
time of possession, How many of those teams only had
forty yards rushing. I'd have to go back and look
at at him. But first and foreest, I'm not minimizing anything.
(25:03):
We've been talking about Texas have anything.
Speaker 2 (25:05):
Now.
Speaker 1 (25:05):
It's certainly okay to talk about how it was a
difficult weekend for some other teams. So please don't minimize
the other teams not playing well and getting beat versus
the team that played poorly on offense, but defense and
special teams played well. Let me ask you how many
of those teams would trade the loss for having eight
first downs, less than twenty minutes time of possession, and
(25:27):
only forty yards rushing but get a win? You tell
me that. Now, I see where you're coming from. But
look at it from both ways. You know, found a way,
got the win. You'll hear Sara talk about this Georgia
last year, which one of the sec tied them won
a game in Kentucky thirteen to twelve last year. Nobody's
minimizing anything, but it's certainly okay to, within a fair
(25:49):
and balanced perspective, show what happened to other teams, not
comparing the two, just showing what happened to other teams.
That's all so anyway, all right, up next, inconceivable might
have seemed inconceivable, definitely.
Speaker 2 (26:03):
First out to find a way to win.
Speaker 5 (26:05):
I'm with you.
Speaker 2 (26:05):
I'm with you on that one.
Speaker 1 (26:06):
I'm with you, all right, coming up, we'll have a
Conceivable on Monday year on thirteen under the Zone, second
hour of the program here on Sports Radio AM thirteen.
Speaker 2 (26:19):
Under the Zone. I'm glad to have you with us
here on.
Speaker 1 (26:24):
This Monday afternoon, and I hope things are going well
for you, Okay. I wanted to get to a couple
of things before we hear from Brian Schottenheimer, the head
coach Sea Pale, asking any word on Texas softball Friday night,
the exhibition with the Aggies. I know they won for nothing,
(26:45):
but there's nothing on the website about it, Sea Powell,
either there or the Texas website, there's nothing about it.
I guess you know, because it was an exhibition game
on that and speaking of exhibitions, Texas women's basketball has
an exhibition game against Lubbock Christian on Thursday night.
Speaker 2 (27:06):
We will broadcast that for you. You'll be able to
hear it live here.
Speaker 1 (27:08):
On thirteen under the Zone, beginning right at the top
of the hour at seven o'clock.
Speaker 2 (27:14):
It will be.
Speaker 1 (27:16):
Preceded by long oorn weekly with coach Sark, So that
will be at six o'clock on Thursday. Normally here's Sark
at seven.
Speaker 2 (27:23):
You'll here.
Speaker 1 (27:23):
I'm at six on Thursday, and I'll go right at
seven o'clock and then at seven o'clock that's when we'll
bring you the exhibition basketball game Texas against Lubbock Christian Okay,
see powellso saying, Hey, when I was doing about those
eleven phrases that are not good if you are either
married or in a committed relationship, he said, I've been
married forty years. I didn't know you didn't like dot
(27:45):
dot Yeah, that would be another one. I didn't know
you didn't like whatever. Well, gee, we've all been together
forty years. Yeah, yeah, yeah, give me some time, right,
I'm not sure. So anyway, so there is that.
Speaker 2 (28:02):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (28:03):
I wanted to hear from the Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer.
Following and again coming up, we'll hear more from Steve
Sarkisian from this morning's news conference that's coming up this hour.
Next hour, we'll hear from Gene Watson. Is we take
a look at the baseball and everything that is going
on with Major League Baseball. Now, one game remaining in
(28:26):
the America League Championship Series tonight, and that'll be Toronto
hosting Seattle.
Speaker 2 (28:31):
The winner.
Speaker 1 (28:31):
We'll move on to the World Series to take on
the Los Angeles Dodgers, and we'll visit with Geene Watson
next hour talk about that. All right, let's here from
Brian Schottenheimer. The Cowboys head coach asked what was the
difference because the defense has been so maligned and really struggled,
but they hold Washington at twenty two points in the
ball game, and he was asked, what was the difference
in the defense's performance.
Speaker 8 (28:51):
I mean, they played really hard like they always do.
I thought the we affected the quarterback the way that
we had in New York. I think that's huge. You know,
it wasn't just the four sacks, it was the hits.
I thought our run defense really was great. I mean
Mary Odi gots for a couple of runs, but man,
they were swarming to the ball. We were sticky in
coverage and that was all great to see.
Speaker 1 (29:14):
And know Jade Daniels, that didn't that didn't hurt either
of the Cowboys efforts.
Speaker 4 (29:21):
No, Terry, no Deebo.
Speaker 3 (29:22):
I think that will feed into kind of the next
topic that Seany was asked about.
Speaker 1 (29:26):
And he was asked if playing more man than man
got the defense more comfortable with things.
Speaker 2 (29:31):
Look, at the end of the.
Speaker 8 (29:32):
Day, you know this was a team we wanted to
play Manda man against. You know, there was numbers and
analytics it said that you know, that was the right
way to play these guys, and each week is different.
But I thought we played man de man very well today.
But you know, we got to improve our zone coverages
as well. But just proud of the guys, man, you know,
the defense. They've taken a lot of bullets and you know,
(29:52):
deservedly so in some regards.
Speaker 2 (29:55):
And I was just proud of them.
Speaker 9 (29:56):
Man.
Speaker 8 (29:56):
They played really hard, they tackled well. We knew the
We knew the turnover was gonna happen. You know, we
tried to manifest that two weeks ago and didn't get it.
And there goes u Doran doing what Doron does.
Speaker 2 (30:10):
Yeah, yeah, doing what Douran does.
Speaker 3 (30:13):
Uh yeah, taking a very ill advised throw in housing it.
He's the pick six king Doron Blend.
Speaker 2 (30:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (30:19):
And and both things can be true that A, yes,
Washington did not have Deebo Samuel and they did not
have Terry McLaurin, and B the Cowboys through their scouting
and look at that, looked at it and said.
Speaker 2 (30:31):
Yeah, because those guys aren't it.
Speaker 1 (30:33):
The way to go is to play man on those guys,
and he did and it worked by and large.
Speaker 3 (30:38):
Yeah, well that's the I mean, I know we're not
going to air dan Quinn or Joe Witt Junior comments,
I'd like to know why they kept Marshaun Latimore on
an island with George Pickens for an entire half of football.
Speaker 2 (30:48):
Yeah that didn't work. Yeah, that happened as well.
Speaker 1 (30:52):
The Cowboys are three three and one, and he said, okay,
that's five hundred three three and one. They are in
second place in the now. The Eagles kind of tough
one out. They wanted to go to five and two.
So they're game and a half back in Philadelphia to
get another shot at the Eagles having lost to them
once already. But is the overall feeling for this football
(31:14):
team now at level five hundred again a bit positive.
Speaker 8 (31:18):
I'm excited about the win today. I'm excited about how
we played. I thought the offense. You know, it's great
to get the running game going again. I mean, let's
talk about Javonte Williams for a second.
Speaker 2 (31:27):
I mean just.
Speaker 8 (31:27):
The the physical style of runs that he plays with.
And you know, it's great to have CD back. You know,
we caught we caught them on a quick count. You know,
they were trying to get to a tricky two and
it wasn't even the route. So he was supposed to run,
but just the way the coverage played out, he kind
of we caught mailbox. He stuck his hand up and
Dak found him and then they ran into each other.
But you know me, man, I just I take each
(31:48):
game one game at a time, because you know, no
one cares that we're three three and one right now.
We're going to care about where we are in January,
and that's what's going to you know, motivate us.
Speaker 2 (31:58):
Yeah, yeah, exactly.
Speaker 1 (31:59):
So would this be then the best overall complimentary football
his team has played this season?
Speaker 8 (32:06):
Without watching the film, I would say yes, And I
think that's just because again we fed off the energy
of the defense getting some early starts. I mean, the
two minute drive at the end of the first half
was huge for us. Again, there goes Javante with another
long run right at the end of a two minute
and so I would say yes. But there's clean things
to clean up. I mean, don't don't don't, don't fool yourselves.
(32:27):
I'm not standing up here going man, we're the greatest
team in the world. There's things to clean up, and
we'll get right to work on that in the morning.
Speaker 5 (32:34):
Secondly, to Wan Clout and he showed up big again today.
Speaker 2 (32:37):
Yeah, incredible.
Speaker 3 (32:38):
Uh.
Speaker 8 (32:38):
You know, he's he's so happy to be here. Uh,
he's having fun playing football again. I think for me,
that's that's that's important because of the culture that we're
trying to build here. And you know, it was good
to see him get a sack and recover fumble. And
you know, I think that's why you saw us go
out and get them. And I've probably downplayed it a
(32:58):
little bit, you know, just as a bil it in
pat games. Uh, but I wanted to wait for a
moment like this to to give him the acknowledgment of
what a fine, fine football player he is.
Speaker 2 (33:08):
Okay, all right.
Speaker 1 (33:10):
The other thing was it was an alumni day at
at and T Stadium, so guys like Roger Stallbach and
Drew Pearson were there, a lot of former Cowboy greats.
And he went down there Sean Aimerden and he shook
hands with all of those guys, and he was asked,
why was it important for him to go down there
and shake hands with all those Cowboy alumps.
Speaker 2 (33:31):
I'm a football historian, man.
Speaker 8 (33:32):
If I get a chance to go talk to Emmitt Smith,
Roger Staubach, Drew Pearson. You know, why would I not
do it, But like that's important to us. I mean,
you know, I wanted those guys out there. I want
I want those guys around. You know, they've paved the
way for these guys to do what they love to do,
make a ton of money doing it. Those guys didn't
(33:52):
make nearly the money that our guys make and that
we make as coaches.
Speaker 6 (33:56):
But it doesn't lessen the love of the game.
Speaker 8 (33:59):
But I also want them to our players to see
you can have success when football is over. And a
lot of those guys are incredible businessmen, and they've got
potential internships and things like that for our players, because
I want our players to go on to have amazing
lives when they're done playing the game, not just you know,
they have great football careers. Life's way more important than
just football. And so I don't know how many there were.
(34:21):
I know there's a bunch. It took me a while
to get through the line, but I just wanted them
to I was thinking about them and how much I
appreciate him being.
Speaker 1 (34:26):
Out there next seat, and Iver asked about his defense
and did he see his defense want to rise up
to the standard.
Speaker 2 (34:37):
Of the offense to complement the offense.
Speaker 8 (34:39):
Yeah, I mean they're they're aware of what's being said
about them, you know, and they don't like it.
Speaker 2 (34:44):
There's pride in that room.
Speaker 8 (34:45):
There's great players in that room, there's great coaches in
that room. And again, you know, like I said middle
of the week, this is not going to be the
worst diversity that we'll go through this season, you know.
Speaker 2 (34:55):
So what do you do.
Speaker 8 (34:56):
You get back to work, you make changes, you make adjustments,
and to go out and put a performance like this
together is really good for confidence. But at the same time,
I thought the communication today was outstanding, and we talked
a little bit about that. You know, you can't just
say close right one time. You have to holler it,
you have to screen it. And again I'm gonna say
(35:19):
it again, Matty reflucing that defensive staff put together a
hell of a plan.
Speaker 6 (35:23):
I thought.
Speaker 8 (35:23):
Matt called a hell of a game, and the players
went out there and executed.
Speaker 2 (35:27):
It, okay.
Speaker 1 (35:29):
And then the other thing, Brandon Aubrey's continued outstanding kicking,
and he was asked for the confidence that Aubrey gives him,
and might he think about letting him try field goals
from beyond the fifty yard line, sixty four, sixty five there,
we think it's seventy yards out.
Speaker 2 (35:46):
Our goal, our goal is to win the game.
Speaker 8 (35:48):
And of course I thought about it, but with the
score where it was, I wanted to try to pin
him back. But I mean, let's talk about the weapon.
I mean, what's the record most sixty yard field goals
in a career. I mean, guy's incredible. I mean, he
really is. He's incredible. And so like Dak and I
kind of laughed because we literally we when we get
the ball, it's like, he's like fifty.
Speaker 2 (36:08):
I'm like, yeah, fifty. He's like, God, it's crazy. I
was like, yeah, isn't it.
Speaker 8 (36:12):
Like we literally had a little dialogue. We're like yeah,
it's crazy. He's like yeah, yeah, oh yeah, Okay, what
play we're gonna call? So he's just he's amazing. Yeah,
all right.
Speaker 1 (36:21):
So those were the comments that Shotenn Schottenheimer had after
the game yesterday. He's doing his regular weekly news conference
this afternoon, and we'll hear some of.
Speaker 2 (36:31):
Those comments tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (36:33):
Also tomorrow in the program in the fourth block hour,
Brad Sham play by Playvoice of the Cowboys. We'll join
this and as always say, he was my boss for
seven years. I was doing for him what you do
for me. Jacob was producing his his programs, and I
was anchoring afternoon drive sportscast on an all news talk
station there like WTP and Washington that kind of thing.
(36:55):
So it was I learned a lot during that. And
he sent me a very nice, nice complimentary text after
the game Saturday down. He had been out with friends
or something and got in the card. He city heard
from late to fourth quarter, all the way through the overtime,
and so he was very nice. But anyway, Brad will
be with us tomorrow on the program to talk about
the Cowboys, so we'll do that. And in addition to that, tomorrow,
(37:19):
also in the three o'clock hour, I have our regular
weekly football conversation with Greg Tepper. They're the editor in
chief TEP with Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazines. So Greg
Tepper joins us in the three o'clock hour. But we
will hear Brian schotten, Hiper Salamar, also your Texas players,
Santamar Arch, Manningham and in addition to Manning, a couple
other players among others. So we'll hear some comments from
(37:40):
that all right. Before we get to the break, I
did want to again reiterate what we're going to do here.
We got a couple of contests.
Speaker 2 (37:50):
That we're going to have.
Speaker 1 (37:53):
One of those that we are going to have will
be for Texas Stars hockey tickets that'll begin a little
bit later in a week. The other contest that we
have is one where I'm trying to find because Texas
is going to Stargville, Mississippi to play Mississippi State, and
I'm trying to find what is the best song that
(38:16):
invokes a cow bell or multiple cowbells, because long wornes
are gonna hear a lot of cowboy bell Saturday night
at Davis Waste Stadium in Start Mill. They play, the
fans rattle a lot of cow bells. So here's what
I want. I want you to reach out to us
with what you think is the best song that includes
(38:38):
a cow bell. Now I am removing blue Oyster cults.
Don't fear the reaper from that because everybody thinks of
you know, the snl skit Christopher Walken.
Speaker 2 (38:49):
I got I have more cowboy.
Speaker 1 (38:50):
We'll hear those little drops during the course of the
rest of the week, but that one is not eligible.
So other than that, what is the best song that
invokes cow Bell?
Speaker 2 (39:02):
Now?
Speaker 1 (39:03):
And the person who comes up with winning entry on
this is going to win a pair of tickets to
the game with Vanderbilt all week from Saturday Long one
football tickets.
Speaker 4 (39:14):
So and I can tell you, guys news you lose.
Speaker 3 (39:16):
We've got eight entries already, already already eight entries.
Speaker 1 (39:20):
And then you said somebody texted in an entry, and
you can't do that, Like we said, you got to
use the talkback feature.
Speaker 3 (39:26):
Right, we had some text we had some YouTube comments.
You've got to use that talkback feature. And this is
how you do it. It's real easy. You download the
iHeartRadio app on your smartphone if you haven't already done so,
when you have it, download it on your smartphone. Then
you do the search for AM thirteen under the zone.
Speaker 2 (39:42):
That's it.
Speaker 1 (39:42):
You just pop open your search window, enter AM thirteen
under the zone.
Speaker 2 (39:45):
It'll pop right up.
Speaker 1 (39:47):
And when it does, then you're going to see a button,
a little red button with a white microphone.
Speaker 2 (39:52):
That's the talkback mic.
Speaker 1 (39:54):
You hit that button, you can leave us up to
thirty seconds a message and say hey, I think the best,
the best song that uses cow bell is and then
name whatever song. I'm not going to say anything. I
don't want to take any ideas away from anyone or
any entries. So that's what you do. Up to thirty seconds,
let us know what song you think has the best
(40:15):
use of cow bell in it. The winning entrant will
receive a pair of tickets to the Texas Vanderbilt game,
and in case of a tie, many of you may
have the same song in mind. Whoever got to us first,
because it's time logged on ADO, so we can tell
whose entry arride before others. Whoever's entry there is first
(40:38):
would win the ticket. So good luck and jump in
there and give us some more cow bell here. Up next,
we'll hear more from Longwrren's head coach Steve Sarkisan on
thirteen under the zone, give you Colan football game. Almost
cave folks are hard to attack at katkak kak kak.
Speaker 2 (40:55):
With apologies ability Joeliber.
Speaker 1 (40:58):
Long Wars did get the win, though they defeated the
Kentucky Wildcats in overtime sixteen thirteen to go to five
and two overall and two in one in the sec
Comments from Long Worn's head coach Steve Sarkesian news conference.
Speaker 2 (41:12):
Let's go back to some of those.
Speaker 1 (41:15):
Conversations some of those comments. Next was a question to
him about whether how much of the responsibility in looking
over the defense and making alignment pass protection calls for
the offensive line, how much of that is on Arch?
How much of that is on the center, which in
(41:36):
this case was kind of Robertson in for the injured
Cole Hudson last Saturday.
Speaker 6 (41:39):
It's a combination of both.
Speaker 7 (41:41):
You know, there's there's times when when you know, we
break the huddle, the most most part the center is
going to set the protections. Anytime we want to change
the protections, that comes from March, and so, you know,
I thought I felt like he's done a good job
of that. You know, I thought we had a couple
opportunity Saturday where he could have changed some things that
didn't happen. And we had some other things Saturday where
(42:02):
the line has to react to things as they come,
and we didn't react very well to that either. And so,
you know, we've got to continue to grow in that
phase of our game, and we got to be mindful
of the protections that we carry so that we can
execute him at a better rate than we are right now.
Speaker 1 (42:19):
Right next, he was asked about arch Banning's growth stages
and how that's kind of been hindered a little bit
in terms all the struggles of the offensive line with
regard to misthrows. Is it a mental thing, is it
a protection thing? What about what rolls all into that?
Speaker 7 (42:38):
I think it's all the combination, right, I mean, it's
it's easy to point to the offensive line. Sometimes we
don't notice. It might not be the offensive line. It
might be the running back who's not picking something up.
It might be receivers not being at the right depth
they're drifting on a route.
Speaker 6 (42:56):
It might be his own, you.
Speaker 7 (42:57):
Know, just air, whether it's mechanically or missing a red
And so it's all those things. And so for a quarterback,
when you get those opportunities, when you have like as
I refer to him as layups, I don't think you
need to overthink you You just need to take the layup,
you know. And that's that's challenging when you feel like
(43:17):
you're working in a game, and he had to work
Saturday night, and when you get those.
Speaker 6 (43:24):
That's not the time for the sigh relief.
Speaker 7 (43:26):
That's the time to make make may be sure I
drill this throw in here, let's get this first down,
let's keep it moving, or let's create this explosive play.
But to your point, I do think things can add
up on you to where you're like, oh my gosh,
I got this guy open, I got to hit this.
You just need to do what you do and let's
throw the ball and play catch.
Speaker 2 (43:43):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (43:44):
Next up for Sark asked about Ryan Niblett and of
course Tamblehead, the two big punt returns, and we see
Niblet come in and out on the offense, go in
motion things like that. As the slot receivers running back.
He was asked, is there consideration to have I'd be
more involved with the offense.
Speaker 6 (44:01):
I think we have, and his role has evolved.
Speaker 7 (44:04):
You know, remember in spring, this guy was playing dB right,
and and then he comes over he's playing receiver, and
then we move him into running back. And nobody thought
in this room, ourselves included, we didn't think he'd be
the kick returner or the punt returner coming into the season,
But his role has evolved as the season has gone on.
(44:25):
He's an integral part of all that we do on
special teams. You know, are from a kick coverage standpoint,
he has a huge role in that, from from a
punt standpoint when he's at gunner. His role at doing
that and then obviously finding ways to get him the
ball in his hands on offense, you know, I think
is a huge part. And so you know, I think
(44:46):
if I can get him, you know, three to five
touches a game in some way, shape or form.
Speaker 6 (44:50):
That's good.
Speaker 7 (44:50):
We've gotten him like one or two to your point,
I think we can increase that. And he's smart enough
and tough enough to get all that done. But he's
done a fantastic job of of gaining trust of the
staff from this time last year to where he is today.
I just think he's a model for a lot of
our younger players of how to go about your business
to gain trust so the coaches will put you in
(45:12):
there and put you in significant positions to make plays.
Speaker 1 (45:15):
Next was a question in Terry Middleton of Horns Illustrated
to Ask Arch and.
Speaker 2 (45:19):
It had to do with.
Speaker 1 (45:24):
How a quarterback and receiver can mesh together on a
show on a throw when the window to throw it
is only.
Speaker 2 (45:31):
About a second to a second and a half.
Speaker 1 (45:32):
He talks about a pass one specific play, and Sark
knew exactly what he's referring to.
Speaker 7 (45:39):
Honestly, I know what play you're talking about. I think
it was a slant pass to Emmitt Moseley. And was
it something that we had felt really good about if
they were going to be playing some man coverage on
third down, which they were in that instance. And you know,
a couple of things could have occurred in my opinion
on that play. I think Arch could have adjusted his
protection to minimize the linebacker coming free in the a gap.
Speaker 6 (46:04):
I think two, we could.
Speaker 7 (46:05):
Have communicated and executed the protection a little better on
the left side of the line with Trevor and Nick.
Speaker 6 (46:12):
That didn't happen. So now you have a free runner,
and now you know.
Speaker 7 (46:15):
It's about contact courage as a quarterback and standing there
trying to deliver a ball when you know you're gonna
get hit, and so that's it's a it's a unique
trait to have an Arch has a ton of contact courage,
but inevitably the throw might be a little errant, and
it might be a little off when a guy is
about to hit you right in the face, you know,
(46:37):
and he just missed the throw. You know, and unfortunately,
I know he'd love to have that back and probably
could have been a created and explosive play, you know,
if if we could have hit that pass. But you know,
we got to do things before that better, whether it's
changing the protection, whether it's if we didn't change the protection,
executing the original protection. Better to minimize that free runner
(46:57):
in his lap and maybe he throws a little more
accurate pass.
Speaker 2 (47:00):
All right.
Speaker 1 (47:02):
Penalties come to mind when they when they stick out
like a sore thumb in a bad spot. Obviously one
of those was the holding call against Brandon Baker there
in overtime, and you know, we were saying, you know,
the one thing you can't afford other in a turnover
to have and in overtime it is a penalty and
a move Texas back. Fortunately they had already gotten the
goal line stand against Kentucky, they only needed a field goal,
(47:23):
which was good because they only regained eight of the
ten yards.
Speaker 2 (47:26):
It was fourth and twelve.
Speaker 1 (47:27):
When they lined up for the game, winning a forty
five yard field goal, so that was one penalty. There
was another costly penalty, and Sark was asked about how
that ongoing process is to clean up the penalties.
Speaker 6 (47:39):
You know, I think one is offensively.
Speaker 7 (47:41):
I think we had two penalties in the game, and
that is a that is a much better number than
we were a month ago when it was a disaster
on offense, and so we've cleaned that aspect of our
game up. Unfortunately, the two penalties on offense occurred, you know,
one in the fourth quarter and then one in overtime,
and so how do we almost have a clean, clean
(48:02):
game that way? The things on special teams were how
do I say this without getting fined? Sometimes that's gonna happen.
You know, we were speed breaking our huddle and we
got called for not being set. We shifted another time,
we got called for being in an illegal formation, and
(48:23):
so hey, we're very creative on special teams. I think
Coach Banks does a great job. I think that's why
we have some success there. And okay, if that's how
they're going to call it today. We had to make
some in game adjustments with the way we were operating
our punt un but I think we have improved pretty
dramatically from a penalty standpoint. Knock on wood, we need
(48:43):
to continue that. I mean, there's been phases of our
team that we have really improved upon. Obviously, the ball
security has been another one, and so that's just another
example of, Hey, when issues like that come up.
Speaker 6 (48:55):
The biggest thing.
Speaker 7 (48:55):
For me in the two instances, I have a communicate
better to the offense in dry when a scenario goes
from we need to get into scoring zone to now,
well let's end the game with the ball in our hands,
and I can talk to Arch and he can communicate
to those guys in the huddle.
Speaker 6 (49:09):
So I need to do a better job of that.
Speaker 7 (49:11):
And then you know, the play calling, like I said,
you know, I put those guys in a tough situation
there to start over time.
Speaker 6 (49:16):
So that wasn't a very good call, all right.
Speaker 1 (49:18):
And one more from Stark this hour asked about what
does it look like on the possible return of CJ.
Baxter to the lineup and would he like Trey Wisner
to be able to share the load more with the
young running backs like Christian Clark and James Simon and
obviously Baxter when he returns.
Speaker 7 (49:36):
CEE four, you know, made a lot of progress last week,
was at practice today and so hopefully we can get
Cedric you know, more into the fold. You know, I
think like anything as a coach, you know, when the
game is early in a game, it's a little easier
to rotate in sub players. And as that game started
to go and things started to get tighter and tighter
(49:58):
and tighter, you know, I think you start to rely
on the guys that you know who've been there and
you can trust because the value of every possession. We
were just trying to get a positive some positive yardage,
not have a three and out, So you rely on
some of those guys. I thought Christian did some pretty
good things when he got in there Saturday night. Sure
I would love to play him more, and we're gonna
we're gonna try our best to do that more so
(50:19):
this weekend as well.
Speaker 1 (50:20):
All Right, we'll hear more from Sart coming up next hour.
We've got some other college football notes to get to
next when we continue on thirteen hundred Zone of the
iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 10 (50:35):
There was a snag gaer, bring it to it's a
same Okay, who the Gators.
Speaker 2 (50:52):
We're back.
Speaker 11 (50:53):
It's the Craig Way Show with Hall of Fame broadcaster
and voice of the Texas Longhearts Craig Way.
Speaker 1 (51:01):
Well, that was the interception at the end of the
ball game to preserve Florida's twenty three to twenty one
win over in Mississippi State. It did not, however, preserve
the job for Billy Napier, the head coach who was
dismissed yesterday. The athletic director Scott Strickland said he has
one goal and wins when it comes to hiring the
(51:24):
next football coach, and that's find someone who can win championships.
During a news conference today, Strickland said his decision of
fire Billy Napier following the three and four start of
the season was ultimately because we didn't win to the
level we needed to. Napier went twenty two and twenty
three and four seasons with the Gators twelve and sixteen
an sec play. Although Strickland credited Napier for leaving Florida
(51:47):
in a much better place than he founded, including modernizing
the football program structure, he also said the two had
long conversations about whether Napier should give up play calling
going into this season. Napier decided to continue calling plays. Ultimately,
the Gators struggling on offense behind the injured DJ Lagway,
and that lack of consistency across the board, Florida ranks
(52:07):
number ninetyun total offense average at three hundred and sixty
three yards per game, so he said quote I shared
with him. I thought of streaming maybe in leading the
program and overseeing the bigger picture. But my philosophy is
you hire head coaches, you give them the authority to
make decisions on how they want to run their program,
and then you hold them accountable. That's probably a big
part of the reason why we're here today. Nape Here,
(52:28):
of course, had been under fire over the past two seasons,
with Florida's struggling to win consistently. Strickland decided last year
to stick with him. The Gators finished the year with
four straight wins, but they did not carry that momentum
into this season.
Speaker 3 (52:41):
Is this the earliest in the season for this many
high profile openings?
Speaker 2 (52:45):
Absolutely?
Speaker 3 (52:46):
Florida, Penn State, Arkansas, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, UCLA, Virginia Tech,
a lot, there's even more.
Speaker 1 (52:56):
Yeah, Florida owes Napier about twenty one million. On the
buyout cost, Strickland said was not insignificant. We have tremendous resources,
but it's not unlimited, so we'll have to manage that.
The resource is not going to be a reason why
we don't make the right decision going forward here. Strickland
said he will decide the next coach with feedback from
a search firm, the board of trustees, and the university president.
(53:17):
This is the third time Stringland will hire a football coach.
He initially hired Dan Mullen in twenty eighteen. Strickland fired
Mullen in twenty twenty one and hired Napier and Strickland
was asked what is Florida looking for in its next
head coach. Strickland said, we want people who can win
championships at the University of Florida. That's going to be
our goal. We want somebody who can come in here
(53:38):
and me be a strong leader and win championships. He
noted the success they've had a winning championships in the
past in football and in men's basketball, and said, I
don't think we've ever been as invested as we are
right now. There's never been a time that as many
financial resources and as much commitment has gone into.
Speaker 2 (53:54):
Making Gator football as good as it can be.
Speaker 1 (53:56):
There's so many things that are in place for this
program to be success at the highest level. We're here
to win championships, and I think we have a really
unique opportunity for somebody to walk into. So interim coach
will be the receivers coach Billy Gonzalez for the final
five games of the season. They have an open date
this week and then they get Florida Georgia in Jacksonville
November first, and quarterbacks coach Ryan O'Hara will call the
(54:19):
place for that. So, so Billy Napier was let go.
And then in addition to that, also over the weekend,
it wasn't a good weekend to have your last name
be Norvell.
Speaker 2 (54:37):
Colorado State.
Speaker 1 (54:40):
Dismissed Jay Norvell, their head coach, and of course Norvelle
a former former Texas assistant and in fact he left
for that job and they were two and five after
their loss to Hawaii. He came to Colorado State from Nevada,
(55:00):
where he went thirty three and twenty six, guided teams
to four consecutive bowl appearances. Colorado States had one winning
season since twenty seventeen. That was last year they went
eight five each the Arizona Bowl. But Jane Norvell relieved
of his duties. Course that was a week ago and
Trent Dilfer was let go. Of course, we know about
Penn State is as Jake was pointing out, in UCLA,
(55:21):
in Virginia Tech and Oklahoma State, in Arkansas and Oregon State,
So yeah, it's it's the carousel continues there in terms
of the coaches and the shorter leash you might say,
with regard to what they have in terms of their
(55:44):
time to get some things turned around. I mentioned not
a good week to have the name Norvel. Jane Orvell
was let go. And then this morning athletic director Michael
Offered at Florida State did not fire his head coach,
Mike Norvel, but he did say that a comprehensive review
(56:07):
of the football program will happen when the season ends.
Of course, seminals opening the year a boy beating Alabama.
That's Alabama's only lost, and then they had that Friday
night double time they started three and oh then they
had that Friday night double overtime loss to Virginia to
begin a four game slide. They've lost all four games
by one score, and going back to last season, they've
lost nine straight ACC games. Offered the ad express disappointment
(56:33):
about the way the season has progressed said he's fully
committed to helping Mike Norvelle and the team rebound in
the coming weeks.
Speaker 2 (56:38):
They haven't open day before. They played Wake for us
on November.
Speaker 3 (56:41):
First, So this is a weird game they've played at
Stanford on Saturday night. Craig, I don't know if you
stayed up for it. I was awake after, you know,
working with the third and Longhorn postgame guys off after
the exciting game at Kentucky. And this is a game
where Florida State had one hundred and fifty more yards
of offense in Stanford. They didn't turn the ball over
(57:02):
and they came out on the wrong end of it
as seventeen point favorites.
Speaker 1 (57:06):
Yeah, I had one week. By the time we got
off the air, got packed up and had a considerable
hike back to the parking area, the media parking garage.
Speaker 2 (57:16):
There was about a twenty minute walk back there.
Speaker 1 (57:17):
By the time we got there, Uh, it was pretty
late and we were gonna Roger Wallason.
Speaker 2 (57:22):
IW were kind of hungry.
Speaker 1 (57:23):
Will Matthews had little meal with him that they gave
him in the locker room, one of the team meals,
and so we were going to run through a drive
through the place, and the line was wrapped around the corner.
We said, we're not going to go in there, but
there's a pizza chain on one of the main boulevards
and lesand I recognized the name of the chain. It's
called Sir Pizza And because I grew up around Sir
(57:44):
Pizza's in North Carolina, it was always pretty good square
cut pizzas, and it was really good. So I had
an idea, and I asked Roger, how about what do
you think about ordering.
Speaker 2 (57:55):
A pizza to go and we'll swing by and get it.
Speaker 1 (57:57):
By the time we get through all this traffic, it
should be ready even just take it back to the hotel.
And he said, yeah, that's fine. So I called him
and they were like sure, I wasn't ready for you.
In about twenty minutes. We timed it right. We got there,
got this piping hot Beats, and we went back and
split it up.
Speaker 2 (58:11):
He took his room, I took mine to mine.
Speaker 1 (58:13):
I got in my room, I opened up the box
and put a slice of Beats on the plate. I
turned on the television and Florida was on that Florida
State was on that final drive before they got stopped
at the goal line. Speaking of goal line stands, so yeah,
strange and to lose to Stanford too.
Speaker 4 (58:28):
Sometimes the timing works out perfectly.
Speaker 1 (58:31):
The other thing that was not lost on me, I'm
sure you probably saw it. The students at Stanford and
the Stanford band are very very creative quite often, kind
of like how the Rice Marching outband the mob was
for a long long time. So it was not lost
on me that right after that goal line stand the
students were doing the tomahawk chop and chant at the seminoles. Oh,
(58:54):
doing that at the Florida States fans and players.
Speaker 4 (58:59):
After that, the old ACC rivals, right.
Speaker 2 (59:02):
Yeah, right right. It goes back weeks. And then one
more thing about this.
Speaker 1 (59:10):
We had this an inconceivable last week, but Texas Tech
is kind of getting fed up with getting fined by
the way. Stanford got fined fifty thousand dollars for the
students rushing the field after that wentever, Florida State ouch,
the ACC funding Texas Tech of course got fine for
the tortilla throwing that happened on the field, you know,
(59:32):
during the win over.
Speaker 2 (59:35):
Kansas the prior week.
Speaker 1 (59:38):
Now, this crackdown coming from the Big Twelve has now
gotten Red Raiders athletic director Kirby Hocutt joining head coach
Joey McGuire during the regularly scheduled Monday news conference to
announced that the university is quote no longer going to
encourage nor permit the throwing of tortillas at the opening
(01:00:02):
kickoff of the football games. Texas Tech fans have been
doing that since the nineties. In August, the Big Twelve
AD's voted fifteen to one to assess a fifteen yard
penalty after two warnings for objects being thrown on the
field and the wallone to center, of course, was ho
cut and after the vote, now this is an athletic
director thinking about this university.
Speaker 2 (01:00:22):
An athletic director tweeted.
Speaker 1 (01:00:24):
The rules can change, but our tradition will not, and
suggested a new tradition of launching tortillas for the opening kickoff,
but after the rock has seen they were penalized twice
for throwing tortillas, there'd be one morning fall about fifteen
yard penalty along with a one hundred thousand dollars fine
after the amended rule. Now, League source told ESPN the
(01:00:48):
changes because Tech was unable to get the situation under control.
It's going to be hard to get the situation in
your goal under control when your athletic director says it's
still okay to do it, you know, just do it
for the opening kickoff.
Speaker 2 (01:01:02):
Don't do it for any others.
Speaker 1 (01:01:04):
I understand his logic behind it, but they're fans. Fans
are gonna fan, you know, they're gonna.
Speaker 4 (01:01:11):
Go nuts, so they're going to bring a backup tortilla.
Speaker 2 (01:01:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:01:15):
Yeah, And he was the loan dissenter, right yeah, yeah,
did you say that, Yeah, because he wanted them still
to be able to do it, since we're going to
get two warnings to be able to do it for
the opening kickoff. I get all that. I understand it.
I understand his logic behind it, but I don't think
it's foreign enough thinking to think that the fans won't
(01:01:36):
continue to do it, you know, throughout the course of
the game.
Speaker 4 (01:01:39):
And it's happening on the road at UH. It was
a big deal.
Speaker 1 (01:01:43):
Yeah, so now one hundred thousand dollars fine if it
happens there. Hokuk said. We know that as Red Raiders,
no one tells us what to do. We make our
own decisions. This situation is on me. I leaned into
throwing tortilla at the beginning of the football season. Now
I must ask everyone to stop, so, he said. The
(01:02:03):
vent operation staff is going to encourage them, remind fans
of the gate not to bring tortillas in.
Speaker 2 (01:02:08):
The l ask fans of his card them.
Speaker 1 (01:02:10):
If they get them in, they'll again ask them the passing,
the ushers, and the aisles who can discard them. Then
if any are thrown and the fans are caught, their
ticket privileges for all sports will be suspended for the
rest of the year.
Speaker 2 (01:02:23):
All right, We'll be back to wrap up hour number two.
I'm thirteen under the zone.
Speaker 1 (01:02:36):
From Carkerfield in Lexington, Kentucky. It's the Texas Longhorns against
the Kentucky Wildcats, the first time ever for Texas Longhorn
football to play at Kentucky Hard count By Bowling turns,
hands it off and from where they put it down.
I think the Lawhorns may have stopped them on third down.
(01:02:58):
Bully waiting on the snap, pass it down, looks to
throw on third down, scrambles to the left, looks Loghorns
have it down.
Speaker 2 (01:03:06):
He goes Tylan.
Speaker 1 (01:03:07):
Simmons drops him for a second a loss of five.
Speaker 2 (01:03:12):
The snap is there and they'll keel back to set up.
Speaker 1 (01:03:15):
The return high kick and Nibblet feels it at midfield
sweets for the right side.
Speaker 2 (01:03:20):
Here's Bryan to the forty.
Speaker 1 (01:03:21):

the log Horns strike first. Has the stamp now back

still being chased, throws inter buy and Hell Anthony hell
a leaping interception. Bullie was to trying to get rid
of it. Hole and He'll tracked it and pulled.
Speaker 6 (01:04:09):
It in for the pick.
Speaker 1 (01:04:10):
A fifty three yard field goal cry from Ason Chipley,
good snaff and hole kick on the way and the
kick by.
Speaker 2 (01:04:16):
Shipley is good. He bangs it home from fifty.
Speaker 1 (01:04:20):
Three and the log Orange are back up by a touchdown.
Speaker 2 (01:04:23):
With two or time to go in.
Speaker 1 (01:04:24):
The third quarter, Holly Tindle the shotgun long down again.
He ships a man in motion, has the snaff swings
that the left side of a big hit blown up
tray More comes in on Jason Patterson and drops him
inside the twenty yard line. It's back on the seventeen,
a loss of six yards. Kick is away, very very
(01:04:47):
high and settling under it. Niblet has it breaks and
tackle turns outside Bryan to the thirty nibbling up the
left sideline to the forty forty five midfield and out
of downs in Kentucky territory. Ryan Nibblett added again. Mason
Chipley on to try a thirty nine yard field goal
out of the hold of Jack Boneaster Lance Saint Louis
to snap it good, snapping old.
Speaker 2 (01:05:07):
The kick is on the way. Then the kick is god.
Speaker 1 (01:05:11):
Mason Chipley comes through again his second field goal to

Speaker 4 (01:05:16):

Speaker 1 (01:05:33):
Foul comes in with the play of the Knights, and
the log.
Speaker 2 (01:05:36):
Worns can win it with a score of many kind.
Speaker 1 (01:05:40):
The ball will be spotted at the Kentucky forty five
yard line. Mason Shipley out of the hold of Jack
bone Easter in the snap from Lance Saint Louis a.
Speaker 2 (01:05:49):
Forty five yard field goal.
Speaker 1 (01:05:50):
Try to win it in overtime, good stepping old the
kick is on the way and the kick.
Speaker 6 (01:05:57):
Is God and God. The Longhorns walk it off.
Speaker 2 (01:06:02):
They win it overtime.
Speaker 1 (01:06:05):
Mason Shipley comes through the long Orangs defeat Kentucky sixteen
cut thirteen to take the overall record of five and two,
and they are two and one a sec play Annow,
it's on to Starkville, or as they like to say
to their stark Vegas. And somebody else tell me that
(01:06:25):
they referred to it as Stinkville. But anyway, they play
Mississippi State and that's on Saturday after dance a three
to fifteen kickoff, by the way, in case you did
not hear, and Our coverage will begin at eleven AM
with the third and long Worn podcast Guys, and then
at noon will be our long Horn game day coverage
(01:06:49):
with Cameron Parker and my Carboharge and Mark Henry. And
then at two o'clock will be the network pre game

to the final hour of the program here on thirteen
hundred the Zone. Craig Way alongside the producer Jay Carman
going to visit and talk baseball with Gene Watson.
Speaker 2 (01:07:09):
Our MLB Inside are coming up in a few minutes.
Speaker 1 (01:07:12):
Our man CB says, what show A did Friday was
Was it the greatest performance in Major League Baseball history?
Speaker 2 (01:07:18):
I say yes, says CB. I agree.
Speaker 1 (01:07:20):
We'll see what Gino has to say about It's because
of the combination. It's not just the three on runs.
That's been done before, not many times, I think seven
in postseason history, not many, but it has been done.
Speaker 2 (01:07:33):
It is a rarity.
Speaker 1 (01:07:35):
But then to have six scoreless, shutout innings with ten
strikecounts and no walks coupled with the home runs in
the same game yeah, I think it probably is. But
we'll get Geno's thoughts on that as well. Ce Palell
comment what Sark said, How can I put this without
getting fined? He said the penalties were not to bet
(01:07:56):
He could say the officials had a different interpretation. Find
these coach which can affordify and sometimes officiating deserves a concern. Well,
they send in the tapes all that, But he can't
even say. He can't even say that he can't comment
on officiating. So to say they had a different interpretation that,
believe it or not, can result in the find. Just
(01:08:18):
even say that they're not allowed to comment on officiating?
Speaker 2 (01:08:22):
Is the deal with that? Which is interesting? On that
I did say.
Speaker 1 (01:08:27):
And somebody asked about Shipley and Simmons getting Defensive Line
and Special Teams Player of the week. Colin Simmons co
Defensive Line Player of the Week, Bason Shipley the Special
Teams Player of the week. They said, did Roger get
his diet coke? He did in the Yes, No, it
was a diet PEPSI.
Speaker 2 (01:08:47):
See how they had pepsi products there.
Speaker 1 (01:08:49):
If you're talking about when we picked up the pizza,
I had a PEPSI had a diet pepsi.
Speaker 2 (01:08:53):
That was the deal on that. And then about.
Speaker 1 (01:08:57):
The the torti are you throwing all? Somebody else said,
looking at the Florida State game, that looked like he
barely broke the plane. It was close, but they reviewed
it and so they said he did not, so it
was really close. But anyway, somebody said, too bad, we
don't play tech anymore, or else we could throw tortillas
to get them. Fine, And then someoney, hey, Craig actually
(01:09:20):
thought about that.
Speaker 3 (01:09:21):
Are you going to see hostile incognito tortillas?
Speaker 2 (01:09:24):
I think tech that's a good question.
Speaker 1 (01:09:28):
I don't think it'll happen, though, And then somebody else said, hey, Craig,
you eat tortillas. What are tacos? My dadad tortillas? What
are enchiladas? Tortilla sausag drapped tortillas? Eat tortillas. You don't
throw those darn things, you eat them. Yeah, it's a
waste of a perfectly good tortilla. I totally agree with
you on that.
Speaker 4 (01:09:48):
A tortilla or one hundred yeah, exactly.
Speaker 1 (01:09:51):
All right, So so we've got this contest we started up,
and already many many of you have already have already
submitted and that the question is, with Texas going to Starkville,
Mississippi this week, where the fans will be rattling cow
bells throughout the course of the game, what is the
best song that includes cow bell? Now, Don't Fear the
(01:10:13):
Reaper by Blue Oyster Cult is out of the discussion
on this because that sparked the whole I got to
hear more cow bell and all that other kind of
stuff from the SNL skit with Christopher Walkins, so we're
not counting that other than that. And I'm not even
sure that's the best one. In fact, I don't think
it's the best one, but it is a good one obviously,
But what is the best song that has cow bell
(01:10:36):
in it? And we told you the way you do
this is you download the iHeartRadio app if you haven't already,
you search AM thirteen under the zone. You'll tap that
little red button with a white microphone. You can leave
us up to thirty seconds. It's our talk back feature,
and you tell us what you think the best song
with the cow bell is in it?
Speaker 2 (01:10:57):
Okay, Now, in.
Speaker 1 (01:10:58):
Case if the song we choose happens to be one,
well it will be one that'll be submitted. If more
than one person submitted that, then it's whoever submitted to
us first. And the reason why I say this, I'm
gonna I'm gonna play a couple of quick excerpts here, Jakis,
just to let you know if you haven't already entered,
(01:11:21):
and you have all the way through this week to
do it, if you haven't already entered, don't enter with
one of these songs because it's already been submitted.
Speaker 2 (01:11:29):
Here's one right here. It's a good use of.
Speaker 1 (01:11:37):
It, a lot of tapping at the start. This is
Mississippi Queen by Mountain and several people submitted that one.
So you don't want that one, Okay, don't submit that
if you want to have a chance get creative trying
to think of that. Here's another one that we know
very well that has use of cow bell. It's kind
(01:12:01):
of the Vineries, but he gives.
Speaker 2 (01:12:03):
Us and then it goes into the rhythm with it.
Speaker 1 (01:12:06):
Love this song by what was once proclaimed the world's
greatest rock.
Speaker 2 (01:12:13):
And roll band. I don't know if it was or not,
but the Rolling Stones are outstanding.
Speaker 1 (01:12:20):
But a few of you also submitted Honky Tonk Woman
by the Rolling Stones, so those are a couple that
have already been submitted, So if you're gonna enter the contest,
don't leave us a talk back with either of those
because those have already been submitted. There's some others that
have been submitted as well, but it's more scattered out.
Speaker 2 (01:12:41):
Those two have had the most people submitted, so I
just wanted to let you.
Speaker 1 (01:12:46):
Know, all right, op, Next, we talked baseball with Gene Watson,
our MLB insider on thirteen.
Speaker 12 (01:12:52):
Under the Zone, the Big Righty McGill sets on the mount,
here's the pitch, and Old Tony tries one.
Speaker 5 (01:13:04):
Left center field. Dig you.
Speaker 11 (01:13:13):
Show, hey, Old Toney, the stuff of legend.
Speaker 6 (01:13:19):
Back to the Craigway Show.
Speaker 11 (01:13:21):
Connect with Craig through the text line by text Team
zone to eight three zero, followed by your message. Standard
message and data rates may apply. Damn, were welcomed me
back to the show.
Speaker 1 (01:13:33):
It was an epic performance from Show Antani and the
Dodgers NLCS clinching Game four win over the Milwaukee Brewers
on Friday night, five to one. Here to talk about that,
Here to recap the NLCS, Here to give us a
preview of the ALCS Game seven, and what's come on
down the line, and a color, a couple of other
(01:13:54):
assorted baseball topics. Our MLB insider from the Chicago White
Sox front off, Geene Watson, is on the line with
us now, Gino, I won't ask you if you've ever
seen anything like what shoeeo Tany did on Friday night,
because quite frankly, nobody's ever seen anything like that. The
popular question seems to be, was it the greatest ever
(01:14:20):
single game performance, not only in postseason history but in
overall baseball history?
Speaker 2 (01:14:26):
Where do you stand with that?
Speaker 9 (01:14:30):
And I think you look at what Bob Gibson did
in nineteen sixty eight, striking out seventeen in the World
Series against the Tigers, and then kind of, you know,
in a lesser version, Reggie Jackson's three run home run
game for the New York Yankees. To come close to
doing that in one night on both sides of the
ball is absolutely unbelievable. I was with a lot of
(01:14:51):
guys that have been around the game a very very
long time, a lot longer than me, over the weekend,
and to the man, every one of them said, it's
the singular greatest performance ever in a playoff game.
Speaker 1 (01:15:03):
Ever, you know, And I tried to think of some
other ones. Don Lawson's perfect game obviously in a different category.
It was incredible, no doubt about it. Nobody's ever thought
Roy Halliday through a no hitter in a division series game,
that that's certainly worthy as well. But to combine six
shutout innings with ten strikeouts, no walks, and three home
(01:15:27):
runs and I think what it's only been done what
seven times in postseason history? Three home runs hit by
one person in the game. I think it's the combination,
isn't it that that has him as the unicorn standing alone?
You know that that that kind of thing. You know
that we heard Stephen Nelson's calling the Dodgers broadcast of
the stuff of legend. He also said on the first
(01:15:49):
time run, I think he said one of one. I
mean that that's a one of one type night, isn't.
Speaker 5 (01:15:55):
It one hundred percent?
Speaker 9 (01:15:57):
And I think, I mean, I don't know that we've
talked about another player or since twenty twenty one than show. Hey,
it was Tawny when my time with him in LA
and the thing that's just become remarkable. I'm on record
as saying, you know, last year we won't see the
same offensive output because of what it takes to perform
on the mound. And I mean, like you know, hitters,
(01:16:18):
they hit, they go play in the field, they come back.
There's at least time for some mental you know, the
rest to be able to go out on the mound
and have to focus and make pitches knowing one mistake
could be the ballgame. To do that and strike out
ten and then still go back to the dugout and
(01:16:38):
get your at bats and hit three home runs. I mean,
just the strength mentally that it takes to be able
not only to do that in game, but to prepare
for that.
Speaker 5 (01:16:48):
And that's what makes show As so special.
Speaker 9 (01:16:50):
He's he's such a wonderful human being and he he
just he just he doesn't love anything in the world
as much as he loves baseball and his teammates. And
he is truly a one of a kind player. And uh, hey,
we're not done yet. Yeah we're not.
Speaker 5 (01:17:07):
We're not even close to being done yet.
Speaker 9 (01:17:09):
So uh it's it's just it's remarkable what he's been
able to do.
Speaker 2 (01:17:14):
Well.
Speaker 1 (01:17:14):
I want to ask you, very this is where we
really lean into your expertise on this stuff, because a
lot of folks may not fully get the weight of
preparation and and and here's what I mean by this,
because because I know some folks that say, well, yeah,
you know it is it was a good effort, it
was a great effort, whatever, and the home runs and
(01:17:35):
all this other kind of stuff without understanding the time
commitment that goes into this thing.
Speaker 2 (01:17:42):
So I wanted to give you a chance to explain
to people.
Speaker 1 (01:17:45):
What pictures do on their off days, what what guys
who are going to pitch have ups coming, and then
on the day of game, what pitchers have to do
in their game preparation coupled with everything that a hitter.
Speaker 2 (01:18:01):
Has to prepare for the time element that goes into it.
Speaker 9 (01:18:06):
Well, I can speak more to show he's schedule than anything,
having been with him and living like he is a machine.
And the only other player I've ever heard who lived
a similar lifestyle was Alex Rodriguez and to some degree,
Derek Jeter. But you essentially, you know, you wake up,
you have your breakfast, you get a little bit of
(01:18:28):
downtime but not much, and then you go to the
ballpark and you're preparing. You know, you're doing your weights,
your bands, you're taking care of your diet. Show Hey
is a huge massage guy, so he's getting his massages going.
Speaker 5 (01:18:42):
But then you know, I've been in the meetings.
Speaker 9 (01:18:43):
I've led the meetings where you're you're walking him through
you know, the pictures and how they're going to attack
him and and what to look for. And I was
very proud of an advanced report in twenty one where
they were facing two lefties and I'm like, show Hey
looks soft down and he hit a bomb in the
first sting, and it was it was a you know,
a great feeling personally, but but just to prepare not
(01:19:06):
only for how that starter's gonna get you, but when
they bring in the leverage guy in the middle, the
leverage guy in the seventh, eighth, and ninth, how they're
going to attack. To prepare for that, and then to
have to go into the meetings and to prepare for
how you're going to pitch to the hitters, and you know, thinking, okay,
(01:19:26):
well I get out on the mountain, I don't feel great.
Worst case scenario, because every pitcher does that. If I've
got my stuff and it's great and they beat me, okay,
But if I go out, I don't feel good and
my stuff isn't working and it's worst case scenario, what's
the game can play going to be?
Speaker 5 (01:19:41):
Now?
Speaker 9 (01:19:42):
So to throw all that into one melting pot centered
around you know, your your your interviews, your time with
your family, your you know, time with your teammates. It's
just an incredible schedule and I've seen it and it's
it's a one of a kind thing, and he is
he is apt. I mean think of think of you know,
all the great players that you've seen that have tried
(01:20:04):
to do it just in college. They can't do it then,
and then to be able to take it to the
major league level is truly incredible.
Speaker 1 (01:20:12):
Gene Watson, our MLB inside are joining us here on
thirteen hundred Zon. There's one other element of all this
that like your insight on and this was something that
was said about, you know, the slump that he was
in in in the Philadelphia series, uh and then in
throughout the course of the four games against Milwaukee. In
(01:20:33):
the first three games he did have one RBI single,
but he was really really struggling. When the series shifted
back to Los Angeles. There was a lot that was
made out of the fact that he took VP on
the field and not in the hitting facility underneath. I
heard Max Munsey say this. He said, I've never seen
(01:20:55):
him take batting practice on the field ever, and.
Speaker 2 (01:20:58):
That's kind of amazing thing. I know, seen him take
it on the field.
Speaker 1 (01:21:01):
It always goes inside. And so he gets on the
field and mounts. He said, he really wasn't even very
good at the start, and then he started launching him
and launching him and launching him. And the word was,
the rumble was that he came back from Milwaukee an
angry man because he had not performed well at the play.
(01:21:22):
He knew he was gonna be starting Game four on
the mount but he had not performed well at the play.
So he goes to the field, takes batting practice, lights
it up, and then he lights it up from there.
Had the triple leading off in Game three, and then
obviously the three.
Speaker 2 (01:21:34):
Bombs in Game four.
Speaker 1 (01:21:35):
What I wanted to ask you about is to explain
to people, you know, what can be the difference for
a guy taking batting practice on the field as opposed
to in the most advance of batting facilities. What the
Dodgers said, it's so advanced and so large, that's where
they do their postgame celebrations, by the way, they don't even.
Speaker 2 (01:21:55):
Do in the clubhouse.
Speaker 1 (01:21:56):
So but how about the difference between taking VP on
the field as opposed to indoors, and how it can
change for some guys.
Speaker 9 (01:22:07):
Well, and I got to tell you, I mean, show
hey never hits outside.
Speaker 5 (01:22:13):
So to me, he was just you know, maybe you
going to Milwaukee.
Speaker 9 (01:22:17):
They've got the roof open, roof closed, half open some
of the time.
Speaker 5 (01:22:21):
You've got a lot of wind coming in there.
Speaker 9 (01:22:24):
And you know, he played a lot of baseball in Japan,
and a lot of the ballparks in Japan are like Milwaukee.
But there was something there that made him uncomfortable. And
I want to know, and I guarantee you somebody got
to him and said, let's change this up. Let's let's
let's do something a little bit different to make you uncomfortable,
to make you more comfortable, and and the idea to
(01:22:45):
get him out on the uh, out on the field.
But just you know, everything from you know, the temperature
in the stadium, to the wind, to the music, to
the sound system in Dodger Stadium to just the wide
openness and of it, something happened something for him. But
I can tell you having lived his routine for a year.
He never hits on the field, so for him to
(01:23:09):
do that, he had to feel pretty bad and show
A is one of the most prideful players you could
ever meet, and the one thing he never wants to
do is embarrass himself, and so I don't think he
was gonna let that happen for very long.
Speaker 2 (01:23:23):
Interesting.
Speaker 1 (01:23:23):
Okay, we'll get to more of the Dodgers once we
know who their opponent is. Gene is going to pop
back on with us on Thursday. We're gonna we're gonna
preview the World Series. Let's jump to the Alcs. What
a wild series this has been, with Seattle taking the
first two in Toronto, and I thought that myself. After that,
I thought, wow, Gino was spot on on this because
(01:23:44):
he picked he picked the Mariners to win this thing,
and they won two in a row on the road.
Then Toronto comes back to take the next to win Seattle.
Seattle wins game five at home, Toronto wins game six
last night. Each team is one and two on the
run home field, and here we are at the climactic
Game seven. First of all, your thoughts on the series
overall between these two.
Speaker 9 (01:24:05):
I think it's been just a tremendous series. I can't
think of two teams that mirror each other more than
these two teams, other than obviously the Blue Jays, you know,
winning back to back World Series in ninety two and
ninety three. You know, this is the first game seven
for Seattle in forty eight years. You know, Toronto they've
(01:24:26):
been in some game sevens. They've been in some very
difficult American League Championship series, including Hours in twenty fifteen
that went six games. I've been very surprised for all
the talk of the strength of the Seattle Mariners starting pitching,
how much they've struggled. They've gotten like thirteen innings out
of four starts, and their Belcal starters have really struggled,
(01:24:51):
and so that that's been a bit surprising, and it's
for me, it's a little bit concerning going into tonight's game.
I think when you think back to what it took
to win that fifteen inning game against the Tigers, and
maybe the the tax that that that paid on that
rotation of those arms pitching out of the bullpen, and
(01:25:11):
they're gonna have to do it again tonight. I mean,
this is gonna be you know, it's not gonna be
it's gonna be Kirby, it's gonna be Castillo, it's gonna
be the boys tonight. Brian Wo's gonna have to play
a very very important part of it. And for me,
Toronto Shane Bieber, who they picked up at the trade deadline,
you know, for a second round pick from Toronto, has.
Speaker 5 (01:25:30):
Been huge for them.
Speaker 9 (01:25:31):
And this is this is another example of a team
that made the push at the deadline, gave up a
lot of talent, and here he is pitching the most
important game of the season.
Speaker 5 (01:25:43):
And that that's where a lot of teams fall short.
Speaker 9 (01:25:46):
They just they will not push in uh to get
the maximum ceiling out of their roster in October, and
just thinking Toronto not made that deal where they'd be tonight,
and so they've got Bieber. Make no mistake, Max Scherzer
cleats on and he he's going to be fighting to
get into this game. And I look for him to
be the first arm out of the bullpen, whether it's
(01:26:06):
the fourth inning or the sixth. This is going to
be a chess match tonight between the managers and it's
going to be an amazing game. And pay attention to
the possible unsung unsung heroes. Dalton Varshow has not swung
the bat well and JP Crawford has not swung the
(01:26:27):
bat well for Seattle. So those are two guys to
pay attention to during the game to be the guy
that hasn't been around the whole series but gets the
big hit tonight to win the game. But I think
tonight is just going to be a fascinating game and
I can't wait for it.
Speaker 2 (01:26:40):
Yeah, me too.
Speaker 1 (01:26:41):
I want to ask you about one other guy because if, if,
if they said it right now, you know who who
might be the MVP of the series.
Speaker 2 (01:26:52):
There are two or three guys for Seattle. I think
that you could that you could lean into. Uh.
Speaker 1 (01:26:57):
The guy for Toronto for me is Ernie Clement because
he's come up with extra base hits I think, in
all but one of the games and has been so
huge And I don't know if unsung is the way
to describe him, because he's had a good year obviously,
but for him to be on fire like this in
this series and to carry it over from what he
did against the Yankees is pretty darn impressive.
Speaker 5 (01:27:19):
Not a plus tool in the toolbox.
Speaker 9 (01:27:22):
A released minor league player that just loves to play
the game and has a heart for the game and
a heart for his teammates, and it doesn't matter what
he does and for how long he does it. The
naysayers just say, oh, this won't last long, and he
just keeps doing it. And you know, I would compare
it similarly to how David Eckstein was viewed with the
(01:27:44):
Angels back in the early two thousands.
Speaker 5 (01:27:46):
This guy just loves to play.
Speaker 9 (01:27:48):
He knows what his limitations are, he knows what the
strengths are, and he comes to play every day. And
he's a testimony to young players out there to just
keep doing your thing and keep believing in yourself and
the opportunities.
Speaker 5 (01:28:00):
Make the most of your opportunities, and good things are
going to happen. And he has been huge for this
ball club so far.
Speaker 1 (01:28:05):
One other guy want to ask you about and he probably,
I'm just gonna say probably, probably won't factor into the
game tonight because he played pitch so well last night.
But Traya Savage h is for a youngster. And and
I think back to that Super Regional series when Texas
beat East Carolina, but he won game one. He I
could tell back then people were talking about then how
(01:28:26):
good that dude was. And uh and just and did
you say started the season at single a ball you savage?
Speaker 5 (01:28:35):
Yeah?
Speaker 9 (01:28:36):
And he he is the you know, he's that it
factor starter. He knows how good he is. He does
not vibrate regardless of the moment. I mean, he is
a rock star in Toronto right now and just a
tremendous talent that you give him a game plan, he's
going to go out execute it with absolutely no fear.
I compare it similarly to Josh Beckett in two thousand
(01:28:57):
and three with us just great stuff, throw strikes, solid out.
Speaker 5 (01:29:01):
Pitch, no fear.
Speaker 9 (01:29:02):
I'm gonna throw it, you hit it, I'm gonna throw
it again, and just a tremendous story. And should they
win this game, he's gonna be very big for them
in the World.
Speaker 2 (01:29:12):
Series, no doubt.
Speaker 1 (01:29:13):
All Right, So, Geno, I know you've been from even
before the season ended. You were going with the Mariners
and you've struck with the Manners all the way. Three,
there's one game left to decide this deal. It is
in Toronto. However, are you sticking with of the m's
are you going with the Jas tonight?
Speaker 9 (01:29:29):
I just having the fifteen inning game against the Tigers
and how they manage that game and maneuver through it
with the arms that they had. I just cannot see
this rotation continue to struggle the way. It's just too good.
And so I'm gonna stick with my Mariners. Not a
ton of conviction to it, but I'm gonna stick with
(01:29:51):
him and believe in them for tonight.
Speaker 2 (01:29:53):
All right, I like that?
Speaker 1 (01:29:55):
Coming up, Geno will join us on Thursday. We'll preview
the World Series because we'll know by then who and
where it will start. If the Jays win tonight, the
series will start in Toronto. If the Mariners win the night,
it'll start in Los Angeles. Gino, I appreciate the time.
Enjoy and we'll visit again on Thursday.
Speaker 5 (01:30:12):
Okay, guys, thanks so much.
Speaker 2 (01:30:13):
All right.
Speaker 1 (01:30:13):
That is Gene Watson from the Chicago White Sox are
MLB insidery. I'll give him credit. He stuck with the
Mariners all the way through. He picked them before the
regular season and he said they're dangerous. They can get
on a roll, and their cable winning the whole thing,
certainly winning the American League, he said, and he did
flipp litle it. He had been going with the Phillies,
but he liked the trend that the Dodgers were doing
(01:30:34):
coming out of the Division Series or the Wildcard series.
So we'll see and we'll get his World Series preview
on Thursday. All right, coming up more from Coach Sark.
When we continue on thirteen under the Zone, it's there.
This is Good Times Bad Times by led Zeppelin.
Speaker 2 (01:30:54):
It's a good song. I like the song.
Speaker 1 (01:30:57):
But the reason why we're playing this is the late
you know, this has been submitted again. We're looking for
the best song that incorporates the cow bell and you're
not allowed to submit Don't Fear the Reaper by Blue
Eyster Cult. So if you get away from that, what
is the best song that invokes the use of cow bell?
(01:31:18):
And we're trying to find the best one and we'll
pick the best one at the end of the week.
But the way you enter the contest is to use
the talkback feature on the iHeartRadio app. So you do
the iHeart Radio app and then search AM thirteen under
the Zone and when that pops up, it'll pop right up,
(01:31:38):
and we suggest you make us a preset. It'll be
a little bit easier for you in terms of the
timestamping and moving ahead of some folks on that because
if there is a tie for the best one, whoever's
entry came in earlier than the other will be the winner.
And so you see a little red button with a
white microphone, you tap that button. You can leave us
up to thirty seconds on a message on that and somebody.
(01:32:02):
In fact, we had a couple people submit good Times
Bad Times by led Zeppelin, So.
Speaker 2 (01:32:07):
That's one of the ones.
Speaker 1 (01:32:08):
But I'm telling you that now so you can get
more creative, find another song that has better use of
cow bell.
Speaker 3 (01:32:14):
Yeah, we're not quite too deep cut territory, but we've
had a lot of great entries already, so really rack
your brain.
Speaker 1 (01:32:19):
Yeah, all right, on the text line seat Palaces. The
bay did it twice. Yes, he did hit three home
runs in the game twice, but he didn't also go
out on the mount and pitch six shutout innings. That's
why what Shoe did was more remarkable. Six shutout innings
with ten strikeouts and no walks.
Speaker 2 (01:32:37):
He did that.
Speaker 1 (01:32:37):
Bay Brew did pitch in the World Series, but every
time when he pitched in the World Series with the
Red Sox, he didn't hit a home run in nineteen fourteen,
nineteen fifteen, nineteen eighteen, and when he hit three home
runs that was with the Yankees, but he wasn't pitching
by then. That's why it was such a crazy unicorn
like performance from Otani to do that. All right, let's
(01:33:00):
go back to hearing from Longhorne's head coach Steve Sarkisian.
Sark asked about his offensive philosophy moving forward as he
tries to get the offense back in gear.
Speaker 7 (01:33:13):
No, I think that's a fair question, because you know,
as a staff, you have to have the real conversation
of Okay, what do we do to help our players
be successful?
Speaker 6 (01:33:26):
And it's not about what I know.
Speaker 7 (01:33:28):
It's not about what looks good on the whiteboard when
you draw it up in there. It's about what are
our guys going to execute really well predicated on the
defense that we're playing and where are our strengths and so,
you know, without divulging what we're going to do game
plan wise, I do think you'll see some adjustments this
week to what we do.
Speaker 6 (01:33:48):
But at the end of the day, we have.
Speaker 7 (01:33:50):
To make sure we're playing complimentary football with our defense.
I think we made that shift in that adjustment about
three weeks ago to say, Okay, we're playing really good defense,
we're playing really good on special teams. Let's make sure
we're playing a complimentary brand of football to continue to
enhance the way we're playing in those two phases and
play in a style to where, hey, we're protecting the ball.
(01:34:13):
All right, we're going to play a field position game.
But to do that, you have to execute third and
one to six, right, You've got to extend those drives,
and so that's got to become a big point of
emphasis of ours there because if you play that way
and you're not taking as many risks, you're not taking
as many chances down the field, then you've got to
be really efficient in those in those third down distances.
(01:34:34):
And then you've got to be really efficient in the
red zone because you know, the game can shrink and
so there's not quite as many opportunities.
Speaker 6 (01:34:41):
You got to be really efficient.
Speaker 7 (01:34:42):
So we've got to have a great plan in the
third and medium to short range. We got to have
a great plan in the red area to make sure
we're putting.
Speaker 6 (01:34:48):
Our guys in position to be successful.
Speaker 1 (01:34:50):
All right, So if all that is true, and if
the game shrinks a little bit. Is he planning also
to shrink the playbook?
Speaker 6 (01:34:56):
It can happen. There's games that can happen.
Speaker 7 (01:34:58):
You know, again, not divulging we're going to do this week,
but you know that's that's one avenue that you can
go in. All right, and let me let me just
preface it with this, not necessarily shrink the playbook to
where you're not doing as many schemes, but maybe you
don't carry as much and so you can practice those
plays more times throughout the week.
Speaker 2 (01:35:19):
Okay, Next.
Speaker 1 (01:35:22):
A question about whether he might consider giving up play
calling and if not, why not.
Speaker 7 (01:35:32):
Because that's why I got hired. I was a really
good offensive coordinator. So I just I believe in what
we're able to do. You know, every year we have
to continually evolve, and there's years we're going to be
better on offense and we are on defense. There's gonna
be years we're better on defense and we are on offense.
Speaker 5 (01:35:48):
You know.
Speaker 7 (01:35:49):
But it's like if I was if I was the
best outside sales guy and and then I had a
startup company, surely I'm gonna go to the sales meetings
if I'm trying to sell something then right, And so
if that's one of your strengths, I'm always going to
tap into the strength that I have, and I think,
you know, being a play caller on offense is one
(01:36:09):
of my strengths.
Speaker 6 (01:36:09):
Some may disagree, that's okay.
Speaker 1 (01:36:12):
One more from Sart asked about does he have a
specific message that he would send out to the fan
basis for a question from our man Cedric Golding from
the Austin American statement. Given this fan base has such
extremely high expectations, not any higher than what the team
has for itself, and the toughest part of the schedule
(01:36:32):
still to come, with a road game of Georgia in
the home game with A and M. Vanderbilt's very tough,
so've got those games left.
Speaker 2 (01:36:38):
Is there a specific message he might have for the
fan base.
Speaker 7 (01:36:41):
Yeah, I would say that's a great thing, you know,
the fact that the fact that you know, you know,
expectations at the University of Texas are always going to
be high. But I think we've we've raised the bar
from where we were when I got here to where
we are now. And that's a credit to the players
and the staff and the organized and the administration.
Speaker 6 (01:37:02):
You know, we're a playoff team. That's what we are now.
Speaker 7 (01:37:05):
You know, we're back to back years we've gone to
the semi finals with an opportunity to go to the
national championship game. And so when that becomes the standard,
right then we all have to hold ourselves to that standard.
Speaker 6 (01:37:16):
And that's okay.
Speaker 7 (01:37:18):
You know, I don't know what's the hardest part of
our schedule yet, right we're going We're going on the
road for the four straight week. We're getting on an
airplane to go play a game in a hotel that's
not our own. And that's pretty challenging too, for not
only young people, but coaches and everybody involved. You know, Shoot,
we got home at three thirty in the morning the
other night. We're back in the office at eight o'clock,
(01:37:38):
back to work, you know, back to game plan, and
we're going to go on the road again. And so
there's different things that are tough about a schedule. This
stretch has been difficult too from a mindset perspective, and
so I know we've got other games down the road
that everybody's looking to. Man, we've got we've got a
bulls eye on this one because this is the most
important game of the season for us because it's the
(01:37:59):
next one. And we've said all along the SEC is
a very daunting task when you when you work your
way through our conference. And Michael Taff reminded me in
the locker room after the game the other night, the
SEC champs of last year went to that same stadium
and won thirteen to twelve. And so it's not always
(01:38:19):
about how pretty wins are in our conference. Sometimes you
just got to find a way to win. And we
were able to do that and now our focus is
on by any means necessary, we got to find a
way to win Saturday in Starkville, Mississippi, and it's going
to be it's gonna be a challenge, it's gonna be
a tough game.
Speaker 1 (01:38:34):
All right, there it is. That's from head coach Steve Sarcasian.
We'll be back to wrap up today's program. I'm thirteen
under the Zone.
