How are you faring today, Jake?
Speaker 3 (00:46):
A very exciting day. I got off to an early start.
Met my new doctor in Austin, which I'm sure all
the listeners are dying to hear about.
Speaker 2 (00:53):
But oh it was great.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
Seemed like a lovely guy. Okay, and I'm fired up
to call some high schol foot all tonight and then
obviously get ready to be behind the board for your
supersized show tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (01:05):
Yeah, we have a big show tomorrow. Obviously, we always do.
Texas O you weekend, We'll come your away from bar M.

bar as well. So we hope to see you. And

Avenue tomorrow. Mike Hardball, Harge, Cameron Parker, World Strongest Man,
Mark Henry, they'll join us out there. We have special guests,
some lifetime Longhorns will join us out there as well.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
So we're there from two to six bar W or M.
Speaker 3 (01:51):
Cam said W yesterday, Why was I thinking.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
It was Barning because it was on Maple Maybe that's.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
Why I said that, And then I said, m A
is in Mike Cardball harsh But.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
Then Cam came no, no, no, no, no, it is BARW.
Speaker 1 (02:02):
Okay, I will see you that just simply because of
the reason why I was thinking that was because it
was on Maple Avenue, when I should have remembered all
along that it was BARW Dallas. So yeah, bar W okay,
great place, and yeah it is, but bar W is
where we're going to be. Twenty nine twenty six Maple
(02:24):
Avenue is the exact location if you need to put
that into your GPS twenty nine twenty six Maple Avenue.
They have the outdoor seating, lots of drink specials, and
as the reviews say, it's great for watching sports there.
So yeah, bar W there on Maple Avenue. So hope
(02:45):
to see you there at BARW tomorrow afternoon. Will be
there tomorrow and then as we mentioned, on Saturday from
the Fairgrounds at the State Fair of Texas. As we
bring you the show from BARW on Friday, but on
Saturday it'll be the Long Orange Game Day Show and
(03:06):
that comes your way from the Old Mill Inn Restaurant
right in front of the Old Mill Restaurant there on
the fairgrounds of the State Fair of Texas. Our pre
game cover jaction will begin at eleven thirty on ten
to thirty on Saturday morning with the third and Long
Worn Podcast guys. Their pregame is at ten thirty. Then
(03:29):
at eleven thirty from the fair Grounds again, it'll be
Cameron Parker and Mike Cardball, Harge and also Mark Henry
and special guests. They're on the fairgrounds. They're at the
Old Mill and that will be at eleven thirty. They'll
go two hours eleven thirty to one thirty. Roger Wallas
(03:51):
and I will check in from the broadcast boot during
that program, but they will bring you the long Orange
Game Day pregame program from the Fairgrounds at the State
Fair of Texas there at Old Mill. And then at
one thirties the network pregame. Roger Wallace and Will Matthews
will join me and then the kickoff it's two forty five,
(04:14):
maybe even his late as fifty depending on the length
of the first game, but probably here in the Missouri Yeah,
but probably in the area of two forty five will
be the kickoff for that one for Texas. Ho you
the Red River rivalry, so uh, we'll have that for you.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
Hey.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
A reminder tonight is Loghorn Weekly with Coach Sark comes
your way seven o'clock here on thirteen under the Zone.
Our special guests include Tory Becton. He's the director of
Football Performance, so you know, you think of guy's e
strength and conditioning all of that, but he's in charge
(04:51):
of all of that, and it's fascinating the stuff he
has to talk about. And a visit with Kwandre Diggs,
the lifetime Longhorn who played in this game and played
in fifty two games and started forty nine of those games,
played in every game possible he could as a longhorn.
So that's coming up at seven o'clock tonight. If you
miss it tonight at a we air tomorrow evening at
(05:12):
seven o'clock. And again I said this yesterday and I
want to say it again. In the past, when we
did this program from here from the station and even
when I was across town for whatever a few years, we.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
Used to say, hey, listen to us.
Speaker 1 (05:30):
On your way out of town and we'll kind of
get you into the mindset of Texas.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
So you will.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
Now you can listen to us all the way up
to Dallas. You're leaving tomorrow morning, I have to do
is tune into the iHeartRadio app and for AM thirteen
under the zone, and you can listen to all of
our programming all day long going up. So let's say
you're leaving Old noon tomorrow and by the time you
get going and you get up North to get around Waycoa,
(05:56):
it's two o'clock. It's time for our program from Barw
on the Avenue to come your way. So you can
just tune us in and you can catch us all
the way into Dallas because we're on from two to
six tomorrow, So why not take advantage of that. And
as I said, come on out of bar W on
Maple Avenue twenty nine to twenty six.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
Maple Avenue is where you'll.
Speaker 1 (06:15):
Go for that for Barw and we hope to see
you out there for that. All right, coming up in
a few minutes, we're gonna hear from long Orte's head coach,
Steve Sarkisian. It is his final weekly media availability. He
does three of these every week. We were talking about
this yesterday a little bit. Of course. He has the
(06:36):
regular main Monday leadoff news conference at eleven thirty on
Monday mornings, and we bring that to you live every
Monday here on thirteen under the Zone, we began our
long Orange Monday coverage, Mike Hardball, Harge in Cam Parker
joining me there at eleven am. That's when we take
care at eleven am on Mondays and then at eleven
(06:58):
thirty Coacharquske with his news conference. So Sark does his
weekly presser on Monday. Then on Tuesday we bring you
a player audio. We heard from Arch Manning, we heard
from Trevor Gooseby this week, we've heard from Michael Taff
so we do that on Tuesdays. On Wednesdays, Arch does
the SEC teleconference and it's really a zoom. It carries
(07:22):
the name teleconference from the old days when they used
to do all these by telephone. But we bring you
that audio same day on Wednesday, and then on Thursdays,
late Thursday morning, so it was just a little while ago.
Sark does his final media availability of the week, and
that's a zoom media availability. He does primarily with the
(07:43):
local media. There's some others who weigh in, but it's
a primary the local media, and we bring you those
comments on Thursdays, and then obviously we have long warn
weekly on Thursday night, a reairing of it on Friday
evening after our coverage from BARW tomorrow, and then I
go to down to the field and have the conversation
with coach Sark our pregame interview, which is about right
(08:06):
around an hour forty five to kick off where we
get the last word from him, and then you hear
that in our broadcast right before kickoff. So plenty of
opportunities here on your long run flagship station AM thirteen
under the zone to hear from the head coach, and
we're going to hear from him coming up in a
few minutes. We have Inconceivable this hour. We do have
(08:28):
some more sports related items with Inconceivable and some food
item things as well, and then something else that well,
this is definitely going to follow along age lines. I
can tell you that because it comes down to and
I had to really think about it on a couple
of these things, things that we did in the eighties
(08:53):
that you can't do anymore. So Jay Herman wasn't even
around back then, a college student at the time, and
then a young adult afterwards during the decade of the eighties.
So well, in fact, right in the middle of the
eighties was when I was your age, Jake. So there's
there's some elements we'll get we'll get to that.
Speaker 3 (09:14):
My mind is racing as a technology thought postponing.
Speaker 1 (09:18):
Yeah yeah, okay, but before we get to anything else,
we should recap the baseball that happened yesterday and last
night and preview what's going to happen today and tonight
with a Major League Baseball Playoffs. First of all, congratulations
to the Toronto Blue Jays, the first team to punch
their ticket to the final four of MLB if you will,
(09:40):
the American League Championships Series. They did that by pulling
away from the New York Yankees uh to UH win
sixty two to take that game and to win the
series three games to one, so the Yankees' efforts to
return to the World Series fall short. Toronto was in
the World Series for the first time since nineteen ninety three. Wow,
(10:05):
and do you know how the nineteen ninety three World
Series ended? By the way, Jake, you're a student of
sports history. That's why I ask you this.
Speaker 3 (10:12):
No I did this is uh? I don't keep my
years straight. Very well.
Speaker 1 (10:17):
Well, Toronto was going for back to back. They won
their first one in ninety two the BP Atlanta Braves,
and then they were playing the Phillies, who were kind
of a surprise team. They'd upset the Braves in the NLC. Yes,
they got in there and it was competitive for a time,
and then Toronto started to pull away late and they're
up three games to two in Game six, and the
(10:39):
Phillies go to a reliever who ranger fans agonized with
and lived and died with himed Mitch Williams, and he
comes out and he gave up a walk off home
run to Joe Carter in the bottom of the ninth
of Game six. It was only the second time in
Major League Baseball history that a World Series ended on
the walk off home run, first being nineteen sixty win
(11:03):
the Pittsburgh Pirates on a leadoff homer by Bill Mazeroski
in the bottom of the ninth off. Yankees reliever Ralph
Terry gave the Pirates a ten to nine win, and
Pittsburgh won its first World Series since.
Speaker 2 (11:14):
Nineteen twenty five.
Speaker 1 (11:16):
The Pirates walked off the Yankees at Old Forbes Field
in Pittsburgh.
Speaker 2 (11:19):
That was a Game seven.
Speaker 1 (11:21):
This was a Game six, but Toronto was up three
games to two, so since it was walk off homer,
it ended the World Series. A very young Sean McDonough
was on the play by play call for CBS, which
had the World Series back then. Wow, and I remember
it's something like touch them all, Joe, You'll never hit
a bigger one in your life or something.
Speaker 3 (11:39):
Oh, you know what, that plays on a lot of
bump backs when I listened to my MLB at that
audio subscription.
Speaker 1 (11:45):
Well, that's the call. That's that was the home run,
Joe Carter's walk off homer to end the nineteen ninety
three World Series. Cito Gaston was the manager of the
Blue Jays. Toronto made it back to back World Series titles.
They have not been back to the World Series since
this year. After well, they're in the ALCS. They can
get there if they win the ALCS and they're waiting
(12:06):
on their opponent. Detroit rallied after spotting the Seattle Mariners
a three to nothing.
Speaker 2 (12:11):
Leave yesterday in an elimination game at.
Speaker 1 (12:14):
Kamerica Park, and then the Tigers got their bats going
and scored nine unanswered runs and they won the ball
game nine to three. So they have one final game,
a decisive fifth game tomorrow night in Seattle.
Speaker 2 (12:30):
Now to the National League, the Chicago Cubs staved off elimination.
They held on.
Speaker 1 (12:37):
They got four runs in the bottom of the first
against Milwaukee, then held on. They beat the Brewers four
to three, and they have to play game four tonight
at Wrigley Field. If the Cubs win, if they go
back to Milwaukee for a decisive fifth game on Saturday.
If the Brewers win, then Milwaukee moves on to the
National League Championship Series. Same story for the Los Angeles Dodgers,
(12:59):
but the Philadelphia Phillies remained alive last night. Like the Cubs,
the Phillies had a big turnaround and they did it.
Or like the Tigers, who were staving off elimination, who
spotted the early run and then turned around and had
eight unanswered the Phillies had eight unanswered runs and Tiger's
(13:22):
actually had nine unanswered. The Phillies had eight unanswered runs.
After the Dodgers had jumped to one nothing lead and
it was eight one. LA came back and scored a
run afterwards, but the Phillies won it. They got the
big bats going. Kyle Warber two home runs, including a
four hundred and fifty five foot blast off the top
of the pavilion there in right field.
Speaker 3 (13:43):
That one's still had.
Speaker 2 (13:44):
I'm telling you that was crushed.
Speaker 1 (13:47):
So he hit two home runs his first two hits
of the postseason. Their top three, which had been a
combined two for twenty two going into the game, all
stepped up to the Mark, Trey Turner, Kyle Schwarber, and
Bryce Harper. They all had big hits in the ballgame.
Ranger Schwirez did a fabulous job out of the bullpen
(14:10):
for the Phillies. The Dodgers, Yoshinobo Yamamoto definitely did not
have his best stuff. He was pulled from the ball
game early, and then as things started to get out
of control, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts sent Clayton Kershaw out
to the mountain. He got through the seventh inning and
(14:30):
got a little bit of luck on on a couple
of outfield plays and things like that, but the roof
caved in on Kershaw in the eighth inning Schwarber's second
home run.
Speaker 2 (14:39):
They scored five runs in the inning.
Speaker 1 (14:41):
There were a lot of people and the things that
this has been written today, and I had somebody text
me last night going, oh, this is sad. It's hard
to watch. It's tough to see a great pitcher like
Kershaw who deserved a better fate. Me a lifelong Dodger fan,
I'm kind of like, eh. The game was pretty much
out of reach even at three to one when he
(15:02):
came in, because they weren't hitting Rangers warres, and he
didn't hit the Phillies bullpen until the ninth and Kershaw's
legacy is already well cemented, as Mookie Betts said, there's
gonna be a statue of him out front of Dodger
Stadium last night.
Speaker 2 (15:17):
I don't think next night. Now.
Speaker 1 (15:19):
What will be sad from the LA perspective is if
they don't win this series, that will be the last
time he will have ever pitched. And he do kind
of feel for him on that that it ended like that,
his final outing was like that. But the Dodgers have
another shot to try to close it out at home
and that's this afternoon at five o'clock and Tyler Glasnew
(15:41):
will go to the mound for them. And who's it
countering for the Phillies is it Christian?
Speaker 3 (15:49):
I don't think Sanchez is right. They are going to
go Christopher Sanchez on one day less of.
Speaker 2 (15:54):
Rest, yep, yep.
Speaker 1 (15:55):
So uh, they're gonna They're gonna go with him, and
you know, he looked really good last Saturday. Key Kate
her Nandy's Hernandez finally touched them for a double to
pull the Dodgers to within a run. Then when they
pulled them out, and then the Dodgers attacked the bullpen
after that got the three run homer from Taoscar Hernandez
that helped them take Game one. But Sanchez, we'll start
(16:16):
for them. Tyler Glass now, who appeared in that Game
one in relief, got five outs, but he'll get the
start for the Dodgers. If the Phillies win, then they'll
have to play one more time on Saturday, but the
series would shift back to Philadelphia. See that's the difference
between that series and the Milwaukee Chicago series. If the
Brewers should lose tonight to the Cubs, at least they
(16:38):
know they're going home with a chance to win Game five.
I think the Dodgers know their their last best shot,
really best shot, is to finish this thing tonight or
late this afternoon into this evening.
Speaker 2 (16:49):
If they don't, and he goes.
Speaker 1 (16:50):
Back to Philly, how many times you want to whistle
past the graveyard? They'd already won two games in Philly.
You think they the road team can win every game
in the series. I rather doubt it. It's happened before. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
that's right. Astros and Nationals in the World Series.
Speaker 2 (17:06):
That's right. The road team won every game.
Speaker 3 (17:08):
Alex calls in the lineup today.
Speaker 1 (17:10):
Yeah yeah, well yeah, it kind of makes sense with
what they'll what they'll face.
Speaker 3 (17:15):
So you got a hit off Sanchez.
Speaker 1 (17:17):
He did, so we'll see how that goes. But anyway,
that's that's the baseball playoff situation as it stands. Right
up next, we'll hear from Long Worn's head coach Steve Sarkisian.
As always, we invite your questions, your thoughts, your comments.
If you want to text us Texas on the text line,
text the word Texas follow by your question or comment
to eight one five three zero. So text the word
(17:40):
Texas follow by your question or comment to eight one
five three zero. Standard messaging in data rates may apply.
Glad you're with us here on a Thursday afternoon on
sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone in the iHeartRadio app.
You know, it's interesting folks think about cow boll and
they think about you know, Blue Oyster Colt and Don't
Fear the Reaper and the skit and everything. There's some
(18:00):
cow bell from nineteen sixty five that they had going
beatles doing that with Drive my Car. So anyway, as
we mentioned, you know, masters of a different time and era,
no question about it. Okay, let's hear from Loghorns head
(18:22):
coach Steve Sarkisian. As we mentioned, he does three media
availabilities a week. His main news conference on Monday, the
SEC teleconference on Wednesdays, and then his final availability to
all of the media overall who are interested in, you know,
(18:45):
logging into the Zoom media session on Thursday. So let's
hear from the Longhorns head coach, starting off with some
opening thoughts, you know.
Speaker 4 (19:02):
Getting closer to the game obviously, and you know what
a special week this is. You know, people always ask
is that business as usual when you come to games
like this? And I say, no, it's not. You know,
you you you come to games like this, and especially
this one in particular in the Red River rivalry UH
and and all that it encompasses from a rivalry standpoint,
(19:24):
It's not business as usual. You know that There's there's
so much that that goes into this game for both
schools and then obviously for us, you know, coming off
of last week UH in SEC play, stubbing our toe
in Florida, stubbing our toe at Florida, UH starting conference
play at zero and one, this is a very significant game, uh,
as it pertains to the SEC race, and so this
(19:46):
is not a business as usual week.
Speaker 1 (19:48):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (19:48):
And I think we could feel that at practice, the
level of intensity, uh, the sense of urgency of which
everybody's been operating, players, coaches, everybody involved, you can feel that,
and I think that's a good I think that's what's
needed this week. He gets a really quality opponent.
Speaker 1 (20:03):
Know you all right, in getting his offensive line play improved.
Last week we saw the freshman Nick Brooks get in
action and had some good moments and had some not
good moments and again with penalties and also got beat
on something. But the other than DJ campbellty offensive line
(20:23):
as a whole had some struggles against the Florida defense.
One of the guys who's been rolling into the rotation
Iso Amozulu, the junior from Allen And that includes with
what he's done on the practice field as well. And
Sark was asked what he has seen from Neto Amozulu
on that o line.
Speaker 4 (20:42):
Well, I think that's it's for every player, right. We're
always looking for consistency, regardless of the position, and consistency
in knowing what to do and then using the proper
funnelmental fundamentals and techniques to do it and then have
the ability to adjust on the move when the picture changed.
And so you know, like like again, that's that's Nato,
(21:04):
that's every player on our team. You know, that's that's
one of the base requirements of playing for us on
offense defense and we're special teams.
Speaker 1 (21:11):
Okay, all right, So to extrapolate that out further, did
he see anything this week from that offensive line, just
not just what Nato uh Amosa had done, but the
rest of the offensive front who, as we pointed out
and as has been pointed out quite frequently this week,
really struggled the old line did in Gamesville against Florida.
(21:34):
So sark was, as has he seen things from his
offensive line and practice this week that gives him confidence
that they can do the job on the field in
Dallas on Saturday.
Speaker 4 (21:46):
Well, I think they practiced really well. I think we've
got a good plan. I think they understand that plan.
I think they're they're playing fast, they're playing confident, they're
playing physical. You know, I always you know a lot
of the old line, judge when we get into our
team run perereriods are good on good team run periods,
and that's both sides of the ball, because that's when
it's really full speed and we're rolling and are we
(22:08):
blocking people? Are we getting off blocks? And we double
team and guys, are we getting off double teams? Which,
like I said a week ago, I felt like was
an issue on both sides of the ball. Coming out
of that game. I didn't think we obviously weren't great
up front of offense, but we got moved around way
too much for my liking of what we're accustomed to
around here on the defensive side of the ball. So
definitely point of emphasis. All signs point to we're in
(22:31):
a much better space this week than we were last week.
But again we have to go out and perform. We
have to go do that on Saturday.
Speaker 1 (22:38):
Okay, And then one more from Sark during this hour,
does he feel that sense of urgency from his guys,
even to the point of some anger that can happen
when you get on the practice field, when you come
off of the feet and you've got a big game.
You know, I give you a little spoiler alert tonight
(22:58):
on Long one Weekly, because again we record the program
on Wednesday evenings over on campus. His first response to
my opening comment slash question was there's probably no better
time or no better game to have on your schedule
(23:23):
than the one they have this week coming off the
way they played last week. And he'll get into more
detail on that tonight and long worn weekly because you know,
there is that sense of urgency you have to get
your act together. So he was asked, does he get
a sense a vibe of the urgency, the intensity, even
(23:45):
anger from his players coming off of last week.
Speaker 4 (23:48):
Yeah, I mean, I definitely sense a level of I
guess frustration in the fact that that they just we
just haven't put it all together yet, and everybody wants
to put it all together. Everybody's working really hard. It's
it's not about our habits and working hard, but I
think it's playing with a sense of confidence too that
(24:09):
we can and and the players, like I said, this week,
in practice it's it hasn't been business as usual. You
can feel that that sense of urgency. You can feel
that level of intensity at practice, which I think this game,
regardless of how we were playing, that's needed when you
go into this game, but in particular for us of
(24:29):
where we're at in the stage of the season. I
think it's needed as well. So, like I said, I
credit the coaches for for you know, shaping the mindset
of the team at their particular position groups, and I
think all encompassing. I think there's a common thread of man,
let's let's go play our brand, our style of football.
Let's put our best foot forward and see if it's
good enough.
Speaker 1 (24:50):
All right, there it is some thoughts from long Orange
head coach Steve Sarkashian. We'll have more from Sart coming
up next hour and in the four o'clock hour as well.
And again a reminder if you headed north, come on
by and see us there at bar W on Maple
Avenue because we'll be there bringing the program from two
o'clock up until six o'clock.
Speaker 2 (25:12):
Bar W Dallas there and just the.
Speaker 1 (25:16):
Way it's described as the at bar W Dallas sports
bar and patio, and that's what it is. It's got
a great patio and a great sports bar. So come
on out and see us at BARW that's at twenty
nine to twenty six Maple Avenue.
Speaker 2 (25:32):
Will be there.
Speaker 3 (25:33):
Looks like eighty six and Sonny on the patio.
Speaker 1 (25:35):
Yeah, yeah, not bad. And they have fans and all
kinds of other stuff. So it's good. So yeah, barw
tomorrow will be there from two until six. All right
up next inconceivable here on a Thursday afternoon on sports
Radio AM thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio app.
(26:01):
Second hour of the program here on sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred the.
Speaker 2 (26:04):
Zone here on a Thursday afternoon.
Speaker 1 (26:06):
Glad to have you with us Craig Wade joined by
the producer Jay Carman. If you like to join in
the conversation. If you like to text the program, feel
free to do so. You have only to text the
word Texas followed by your question or comment to eight
one five three zero. Text the word Texas, and then
right after that your question or comment to eight one
(26:26):
five three zero.
Speaker 2 (26:27):
Standard Messaging and Data Rates pamply.
Speaker 1 (26:29):
Also, the other way you can reach us is through
a talkback microphone talkback feature, and the way you do
that is you download the iHeartRadio app on your smartphone
if you haven't already, and then once you have a
downloaded it's free, it's easy, you don't worry, anything's not complicated,
(26:50):
doesn't cost anything. Then you search in your little magnifying
glass search Windows Search AM thirteen hundred.
Speaker 2 (26:58):
The zone.
Speaker 1 (26:59):
When you search it and it comes up, then what
we suggest you do it it'll pop straight up, But
we suggest you go ahead and make it a preset
because that'll help you when it comes to contesting in
terms of circumventing some of the traffic there to get
in the drawing for contesting. So we suggest you make
(27:20):
it a preset and you'll see AM thirteen under the
zone come up. And then there's two buttons. There's a
little white one that's the shape the like of a triangle.
That's to listen to our programming, whatever is going on
at that time on the station. The other button is
a little red button with a light microphone. That's the
talkback microphone, the talkback feature. You push that button and
you can leave us a voice message up to thirty
(27:41):
seconds whatever you want to talk about. Keep it clean
obviously if you want it to air on the air,
but we'll put it on the air if you do that.
And you will need to remember this if you want
to win prizes, because that's how we do it. We
do our contesting through the talkback feature, the talkback microphone.
And we're going to give a way another pair of
(28:02):
tickets to see the Texas Stars against the Grand Rapids
Griffins this Saturday night at the HB Center in Cedar Park.
This is season opening weekend for the Texas Stars. So
who made the final four last year. They were Western
Conference finalists before they fell to the Abbotsford Canucks. So
(28:24):
we'll give away tickets to that a little later on
in the program. But that's how you do it there
to win tickets for that, the talk back feature.
Speaker 3 (28:35):
So anyway, yeah, I'm seeing a couple of contest entries
from yesterday.
Speaker 1 (28:39):
Okay, good, And there's a key word every day to
make sure you get in.
Speaker 2 (28:46):
So we'll tell you what that keyword is a little
later on.
Speaker 1 (28:49):
Baseball playoffs will resume this afternoon at five o'clock. Dodgers
will host the Phillies Los Angeles leaves two games to
one after the Phillies won Game three last night to
stay alive. They won eight to two, So Game four
is this evening. I'll actually start three o'clock in the
afternoon in La at Dodger Stadium, where those late afternoon
(29:10):
shadows could make it tough on hitters against Christopher Sanchez,
the Philly starter and Tyler glasnow the Dodger starter. Those
are the starting pitchers for today's game, but that's the
afternoon contest.
Speaker 2 (29:24):
Then tonight Game.
Speaker 1 (29:26):
Four of the nl DS series between the Cubs and Brewers.
Chicago won yesterday a Wrigley Feel four to three to
stay alive.
Speaker 2 (29:36):
They're down two games to one.
Speaker 1 (29:37):
Milwaukee, like Los Angeles, will have a second opportunity to
wrap it up to finish closing out four games as
the Brewers and Cubs play tonight at Wrigley Field. The
American League Division series between the Mariners and the Tigers
will go to a decisive fifth game. In fact, the
team's travel today to Seattle, and tomorrow Night eight will
(30:00):
be that decisive fifth game of that ALDS series between
Seattle and Detroit. The one series that did close out
was the one at Yankee Stadium last night. New York
season brought to a close by the Toronto Blue Jays,
who are in the ALCS for the first time since
they went to the World Series and won it in
nineteen ninety three. The Blue Jays won five to two. Now,
(30:27):
don't I don't know how much you've heard about this,
Jake or others have heard about this as well, but
there had been some animosity built up during the season
between the Yankees and the Blue Jays, and if we're
being real, honest, completely honest here, a lot of it
was just being spewed out from the Yankees, you know.
(30:49):
But but Martinez, the Blue Jays broadcaster, had said something
about it and about the Yankees didn't think they were
that great a team, and that drew some meyer from
Aaron Boone, their manager.
Speaker 2 (31:05):
He wasn't happy.
Speaker 1 (31:07):
Also during the summer, the Jay swept a series from
the Yankees, and Michael Kay, the Yankees broadcaster, see ye,
had the yeah he said stuff.
Speaker 2 (31:17):
He got kind of.
Speaker 1 (31:18):
Involved in a little bit of a media spat with
Jamie Campbell, who's the host of Blue Jay Central on
Sports Net that's Canada's version of ESPN as sports.
Speaker 2 (31:29):
Net, and.
Speaker 1 (31:32):
He waved a broome live on the air after Toronto
swept New York in the four game series. Kay tried
to explain that some of his words that led to
Campbell's celebration were taken out of context, but then Kate
turned around and said, and here's the quote, you shouldn't
(31:52):
hang on the rim three minutes in the third quarter
of a basketball game. Feel good about sweeping the Yankees
feel good about winning all these games in a row,
feel good about being in first place. But the hang
on the rim this early, Let's hang on the rim
in October, that's when you hang on the rim.
Speaker 3 (32:08):
Well, Vlad Junior basically did the equivalent of that. I
don't know if you saw this or you definitely you
might have already flipped over to the Dodgers because they
were playing at that point.
Speaker 2 (32:17):
I had.
Speaker 3 (32:18):
But this was what aired on the Fox Sports postgame
report with Big Poppy David Ortiz with Vlad Guerrero Junior
on headset, being downst with Champagne in the locker room. Wait,
(32:41):
they're gonna do it again. There's twenty five more seconds
of that.
Speaker 2 (32:48):
Wow.
Speaker 1 (32:49):
Well, of course Big Poppy his dive was cast with
the Red Sox, so naturally there's gonna be that rival
stuff there. But anyway, this whole business about hanging on
the rim, Michael Kay talked about it. There were people
who kept re seats, including the Toronto Blue Jays who
tweeted out and one final thing, we won't hang on
(33:10):
the rim in October. We'll enjoy this night though, all right,
So there was that. Then somebody else going, hey, Michael
k we're hanging on from the rim in October and
talking Yanks said, hanging on, John Boy, Yeah, hanging on.
Speaker 2 (33:28):
The rim, Michael Kay.
Speaker 1 (33:30):
And they're showing like Vlad Junior in a photoshop thing,
dunking on Michael Key. Then they're showing the Vince Carter
slammed up from his years with the Raptors, saying Yankees
broadcaster Michael Kay after the Jay swept the Yankees in
middle summer, hang on the rim in October, the Blue
Jays say, less, they say, And.
Speaker 3 (33:50):
Then yeah, it's funny though, because it was such a
you know, thousand cuts series for Toronto. They just was
They just put together better at bats and made you
were mistakes over the course of the series to win it, which.
Speaker 1 (34:02):
By the way, which by the way, that's how they
played all season long. Absolutely, that's their And let me
also say this, that's how the Milwaukee Brewers play.
Speaker 2 (34:14):
They're not big boppers.
Speaker 1 (34:15):
They don't hit home runs the way that the Dodgers do,
where the Phillies do, or even the Mariners do obviously
with the big dumper and what Uhineoswire has hit forty
nine during the year. So they're not a big you know,
crush the ball home run hitting team. But they've proven
and those are smaller market teams Toronto and Milwaukee, that
(34:38):
you can win without necessarily having the big thumpers. So
Toronto is into the ALCS and they're waiting on the
winner of this game tomorrow night, which tells me, I
guess what game wantill be Sunday of the ALCS, and
it'll be in Toronto.
Speaker 3 (34:54):
That's right. Yeah. Joe Davis and John Smoltz joked about
going there anyway, although Smoltz was saying if it wasn't
so far away, I'd be flying to Seattle. Yeah, right,
just to watch as a fan for Game five.
Speaker 2 (35:05):
Absolutely absolutely.
Speaker 3 (35:06):
Let me let me ask you this. I heard something
really interesting on a podcast yesterday. Jeff Passen was on.
It was on a different show.
Speaker 2 (35:13):
I really liked Jeff Pasilal.
Speaker 1 (35:14):
I got a chance to meet him at the Sportscaster
the National Sports Media Convention when it was being presented
at the Texas Sportscaster of the Year Award, and he
was the National Sports Writer of the Year award. And
what a great dude, good friend with our man Jeen
Watson by the way too, So he was one of
the ones when I when I told him about Gene
(35:35):
and our friends, he said, tell snacks.
Speaker 2 (35:38):
I said, A said that the Geno he had a
good lad.
Speaker 3 (35:42):
So he was on Ryan Rosillo's show and they made
They brought up the point about the success and potential
collision courses too early to call. If the Dodgers meet
the Brewers with a looming potential CBA dispute slash potential
lock out, how much of an impact might that series
(36:03):
have on whether we see baseball in twenty twenty seven.
And it was interesting because Jeff Passon said the result
will be used by both the large market teams and
the small market teams to fit their own agenda.
Speaker 2 (36:14):
If you're a small.
Speaker 3 (36:14):
Market team, you think the Brewers are doing it better
than any of us. They're the model citizen of small
market teams who have found edges around the margins, and
they're winning that way. If they get buzz sawed by
the Dodgers, small market teams are going to say, well,
what the heck are we doing here? And then flipp
it the other way. If the Brewers win the World Series,
(36:35):
the big market teams will say, what are you complaining about?
Speaker 2 (36:38):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (36:38):
Yeah, Not only that here's the other Kings X on
this deal. Tell me the last time we had a
back to back World Series champion eight oh nine?
Speaker 3 (36:47):
Hard to do, very hard.
Speaker 1 (36:49):
So no, no, no, it's not even O eighth nine. It's
ninety nine, two thousand when they won three in a
row ninety eight through two thousand, eight oh nine. Yet
the Phillies winning O eight Yankees won and oh nine
right nine was just the last time the Yankees won
World Series?
Speaker 3 (37:00):
Yeah, all my friends that say twenty seven twenty seven
rings and that's the one you were alive for.
Speaker 2 (37:05):
Yeah, it was still sitting on there.
Speaker 1 (37:08):
So it's been twenty five years since we had a
repeat World Series champion. The Dodgers are trying to do that,
but they're they're kind of the underdog. They didn't have
home field for this series against the Phillies and they
haven't won this series yet. And personally, I believe and
it's not just being whatever gloom and doom Dodger fan
ee or here, what I do believe that the Phillies
(37:30):
find a way to win this tonight. They're going to
win the series because they're going back home and the
Dodgers are going to turn to Otani again to try
to start it, but I don't know that it works
out for them well enough, so I think it's really
all the momentum will be with the Phillies. If they
win tonight, the Dodgers better get it done tonight. If
they're going to get it done.
Speaker 3 (37:50):
How about the Brewers. I feel the same about that series.
If they burn Peralta tonight.
Speaker 2 (37:54):
And lose, no, because they go home.
Speaker 3 (37:56):
Right and they have Misarowski Game five exactly, I think
the Brewers are still set up.
Speaker 2 (38:02):
I could see the Cubs winning tonight.
Speaker 1 (38:04):
I agree with Keith Mornley said he thought the Cubs
would thrive at Wrigleyfield.
Speaker 2 (38:08):
I could see it happening. But I still think the
Brewers are going to win that series.
Speaker 3 (38:12):
I thought the Cubs got a little lucky yesterday.
Speaker 1 (38:13):
Well, they had some good fortune and made some good
plays as well, but the chances, yeah, they did. So
I think that if the Brewers don't wrap it up tonight,
they could still get it done on Saturday at home.
Whereas the Dodgers, if they don't get it done at
home tonight, that's asking a lot asking to win three
(38:35):
games in Philadelphia in a best of five series. You
brought up the nationals Astars that was the best of
seven where you can take a body blow or two
like that on your own home field and still find
a way to win best of five that's tight.
Speaker 2 (38:50):
And asking them to.
Speaker 1 (38:51):
Win a third road game against that team that won
ninety six ball games this year, I don't know that
that could happen, So LA better hope they have it
tonight to try to win it, and if they do,
then they're probably again. I think the Brewers is probably
gonna win that series, and then they're gonna have home
field advantage again.
Speaker 2 (39:09):
The thing about the Brewers is they hadn't done it.
Nineteen eighty two.
Speaker 1 (39:14):
Is the only time they ever went to a World
Series anywhere in the American League back then, and so
they haven't been in a World Series since then. That's
the only time so they haven't proven that they can
get it done.
Speaker 3 (39:27):
This is the series where they have that big time
favorite pressure. I know that they are the number one seed,
they're going to have the home field, all of that,
but I think against the Dodgers they won't feel the
weight of expectations the way they do right now. To
close out the Cubs, I.
Speaker 2 (39:42):
Agree totally agree, especially because that regional rivalry thing and
all that stuff. They're only ninety miles apart.
Speaker 1 (39:48):
Okay, up, next, we're going to hear from Longhorn's head coach. Actually, no,
we're hearing from Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer. Next, we'll
hear from Stark a little later on this hour. Next
the coach of the Cowboys, Brian Schotttheimer. When we continue
on thirteen under the Zone, how about some great CCR
(40:08):
for Thursday afternoon. Absolutely proud, merry Action. I'm glad to
have you with us on this Thursday afternoon. The Cowboys
come off the win over the New York Jets. They're
two two win one. Now they turned their attention to
a road trip to Charlotte to take on the Carolina
Panthers on Sunday. Before practice yesterday, Brian Schottenheimer's asked a
(40:33):
couple of questions about facing them, In fact, the fact
of his facing the Panthers and the Cowboys playing them
for the third straight year.
Speaker 5 (40:42):
You know some of the people, I think you know.
I know the staff there very well. I hold them
all in high regard, having been with Dave Canalis and
Pat McPherson, Will Harriger, brad Izac, you know, competed against
Azero a bunch. You know, I see them playing with
a lot of confidence right now. I see them playing
very well at home. I think they're we know at home.
You know, they got Derek Brown back on defense, so
(41:05):
familiarity on both sides. But as you guys all know,
it's going to come down to how we both perform
on Sunday afternoon. And but Dave, you know, has them
playing with a lot of confidence.
Speaker 1 (41:16):
And one of those guys who is a performer and
who plays with a lot of confidence is their cornerback,
their fifth year veteran j C. Horn and the Cowboys
of course little receiver what was c ed lamb out
and and then But they have gotten some good play,
you know, uh, Jalen Tolbert, George Pickens, obviously, even Ryan
(41:39):
Flinoy has has done well.
Speaker 3 (41:41):
Yeah how about Ferguson too.
Speaker 1 (41:42):
And Ferguson obviously at the tight end spot. But when
it comes to facing a veteran like j. C. Horn,
Schottenheimert says, you know, they know there's a real challenge here.
Speaker 2 (41:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (41:54):
First of all, I man, I know his dad Joe
Horn played for my dad and I was on the
staff as a young QC when when Joe was there,
And uh so really, you know, I love Joe and
he's obviously done a great job mentoring you know, JC,
and yeah, just dynamic cover skills. I mean really, he's competitive,
very confident, great transition. I can see why the Cowboys
(42:18):
and a lot of teams coveted him. I think he's
playing at a high level, you know, with the way
he now he covers, but the way he tackles. He's
an excellent blitzer. You know, he got free on us
last year in a game, a little corner blitz you know,
on third down that we miss id'd. And yeah, there's
a there's a lot to like.
Speaker 1 (42:38):
Yeah, for sure. I love the NFL older school tech terminology.
First of all, I mentioned that he was the son
of the former Saints wide receiver Joe Horn, Right, that's right. Yeah,
And then then uh for him to talk about what
he said, I was a QC, got quality control yeap
(42:58):
when he was young, quality control assistant coach there.
Speaker 3 (43:01):
You know, nowadays, all you have to do, has it
been in the building with a McVeigh or a Shanahan
and you're a hot candidate.
Speaker 1 (43:06):
I'm telling you you got a shot if you're because
they did the same thing. They all all those guys
you mentioned, UH, you know, Mike McDaniel and UH and
Sean McVay and Kyle Shanahan, all of those guys all
took their shot in. Schottenheimer was one of those as
well that you know, going up, coming up through the
system first is a quality control you know. The first
(43:28):
guy I think I ever heard of that rose to
a limit of level of prominence.
Speaker 2 (43:35):
Doing something like that is that.
Speaker 1 (43:38):
Eric Spolstra when he was a video guy, a video
guy for the Miami Heat, ultimately the coach, and we're
hearing he's going to be the next Olympic.
Speaker 2 (43:46):
Coach for the for Team USA, for USA basketball.
Speaker 3 (43:50):
It's a big, big weight being the Olympic coach for
the l A Games. Yeah, yeah, exactly with France back stronger.
Speaker 1 (43:56):
Yeah, but that was that was something that shot he
was talking about. But he was a young QC, a
quality control guy in and again that's a pathway, that's
a pathway to rising through the ranks in the coaching profession.
There I mentioned Ryan Flinoy and with his emergence is
it tough to call plays to get so many playmakers?
(44:18):
Involves a nice problem to have.
Speaker 5 (44:20):
I don't really call plays, you know, to try to
get a ball to a spot on the field that
call plays to get balls to people. You know, like
the big third down the first third down game, that
floorinoy you know caught that was designed to get him
the ball. You know, that was the design. It was
the first progression that was I wasn't predicting he was
(44:41):
going to catch it and pull away and pull out
of the first tackle and go down there and do that.
That that caught me by surprise in a good way.
Another touch for flow, because I'm just assumed that's who
you're talking about. Was you know, we were in two minutes,
we were going fast, and we got him to jump
and so free player response means everybody goes deep and
you take your shot. And so incredible catch. You know,
Dak put in a spot where he could get it.
(45:02):
He had the power to step inside of the corner.
Speaker 2 (45:03):
And but.
Speaker 5 (45:06):
You're always going to feature your quote unquote elite players.
We've got a lot of elite players. But again I'm
gonna say this about Dak. With Dak's doing an incredible
job of right now is he's just reading progressions and
the first open guy is going to get the ball.
Speaker 2 (45:20):
And I think that's what we're seeing, you know, I was,
I was hearing.
Speaker 1 (45:25):
I was listening to the broadcast when I landed from Gainesville,
came back last Sunday and I was driving home and
I'm listening to the broadcast where you can listen to
the Cowboys games in this town on our sister station,
ninety eight point one FM k PET. You can listen
to Houston Texans games here on the zone and you
can listen to Cowboys on ninety eight point one FM KVET.
(45:46):
And I'm driving home and I'm listening to Brad Sham
and Babelfenberg call it and Ryan Flinoy catches a pass
and when i'd seen him before, I thought it was
it's got to be Floornoyd, right, Floor Nooyd, that's how
it's f l O you are and a wife. Floorinoy
is the way you he said they were told specifically Flinnoy,
(46:09):
like it's just f l uh and Oi Flinnoy.
Speaker 3 (46:13):
I'm trying to think of another name that would compare
to that.
Speaker 1 (46:15):
I don't know, but it's Flinoy, he said, and we've
been told it's Flinoy, So Uh. Anyway, that's a guy
who's starting to emerge. Another guy who's emerges. A former cowboy,
Rico o'dowdell had a big touchdown run for the Panthers
last week and for two undred yards. Yeah, and they
(46:35):
they asked uh Schottenheimer about his approach. How do you
deal with the guy that you know so well who's
now playing for the Panthers, Rico dowdell.
Speaker 2 (46:47):
It's hard.
Speaker 5 (46:47):
Rico's a really skilled runners, got a great vision. He
runs hard. You know, the guys that have been around,
which you've got a ton of new faces, they don't
realize the power that he has. You know, Rico was
a guy that you know, we considered keeping and we
kind of fell in love with Javonte, were we right?
Speaker 2 (47:08):
I don't know.
Speaker 5 (47:08):
Javonte's doing great. Rico's doing great.
Speaker 1 (47:11):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (47:11):
But the Carolina Panas are a damn good run team.
And that's not just because Rico is because their offensive line.
Speaker 2 (47:16):
But I'm proud of Rico. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (47:20):
Jerry Jones said this very similar thing yesterday when we
ran some audio from Jerry from his Weekly Thing on
One to fight through the fan in Dallas, where he said,
that's not that's not a negative on Rico. I loved
Rico when he played here. He was one of my favorites.
He talked quite at length about Rico. He had He
had quite quite a bit to say about Rico Doltim,
(47:41):
but ultimately they let him go.
Speaker 2 (47:43):
An de sides with Carol White and he's doing great things.
Speaker 1 (47:45):
But they're right, uh Bo Jerry, and he made reference
to Javonte Williams and shot he just did there.
Speaker 2 (47:55):
Javonte Williams is doing well for the Cowboys.
Speaker 3 (47:57):
Yeah, he is. And Tommy Yarish talked tout his impact
when he was on the show last Friday. I think
even people in that building, and they may not admit it,
but they're surprised by what they've gotten out of him.
He looks just as explosive. It's that you know, usually
for running backs, you get the ACL tear, you think, okay,
they're back to full strength the year after. For Javonte,
it's been kind of two years after we've seen him
(48:19):
back to the way he looked as a rookie with
the Broncos. And you gotta remember Craig, He's only twenty
five six years old.
Speaker 2 (48:25):
Yeah, same age as you. Oh don't okay, same as you.
Speaker 3 (48:30):
I'm not ready to start feeling old watching sports yet
we're already bordering on that. They watched college football. I
was happy the Longhorns had such an old special teams
group come in, right, because you know, I get another
year of being younger than some players on the team.
Speaker 2 (48:43):
There you go.
Speaker 1 (48:44):
You know, I remember when I kind of crossed the
rubicon on that. I kind of remember when you said players,
you know that when I was in college and right
out of that and got older and then the younger players. Yeah,
I remember that. And then you'll really start feeling oh
when players who covered in high school have players of
(49:05):
their own, kids of their own playing sports. Or I'll
give you another example. A couple of weeks ago, I
did that high school football game between Solina and Frisco
Panther Creek and it was number one in the state,
defending state champion Salina against number six in the state
Frisco Panther Creek. The head coach at Selina is Bill Elliott.
(49:28):
Really outstanding coach. It's been added a while. He's won
multiple state championships. Bill Elliott was the starting offensive lineman
on a pilot points state championship team that I called
the games for when I was in college.
Speaker 2 (49:44):
Bill Elliott was.
Speaker 1 (49:45):
Bill Elliott now has sons who are young up and
coming now and are like ball boys and stuff like
that with the program. And Bill Elliott is a veteran
head coach and a multiple state championship winning coach at SELTA.
Speaker 3 (50:00):
I'm not ready to reframe it yet. Those student athletes
there're still my peers, right, Okay, all right, that's what
I'll tell myself.
Speaker 2 (50:06):
Hold on to it as long as you can.
Speaker 3 (50:08):
I refuse to feel old at twenty five.
Speaker 2 (50:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (50:10):
Well, one guy who's not very old either, but now
he has started to pick up here is Bryce Young
and the Panthers quarterback and Brian Schottennheimer was asked for
his faults on how Bryce Young is improved year by year.
Speaker 5 (50:26):
More comfortable, and I think, you know, here's a guy
I had a first time head coach, not first time
first year head coach, get fired and then new play
caller took over his first year, went from Frank Wright
to Thomas Brown, who TV is a really good friend
of mine, good coach.
Speaker 2 (50:39):
He's in new England.
Speaker 5 (50:40):
Now to Dave coming in and then you know Brad
Iazac and you know Dave being the play car, he's
more comfortable. I mean, you know, I think anytime we
talk about bringing the team back where they're down seventeen,
I think nothing last week against Miami to be able
to go and do that's that's growth and that's maturity,
and that's something that he'll pull from and the guys
we'll have confidence. You know, Ted McMillan was a great
(51:03):
draft pick. You guys know we loved Ted, had some
love for him. They're using you know, Hunter Renfro, you know,
the right way in my opinion on third down. He's
very active in the way they target him. And they've
got stable backs.
Speaker 2 (51:15):
I mean it's not just Rico. I mean, Hubbard's a
great player. ETN is a great player. They know how
to run it.
Speaker 5 (51:20):
I mean their run game system has been in place
for a while around the league, going back to Tampa
Bay with their line coaches, and there's a commitment there
to run the football, which is no surprise. Dave came
from Seattle. Pete Carroll, Well, you better be able to
run the football.
Speaker 1 (51:35):
Yeah, no question about that, all right, that's some sound
from Brian Schottenhammer. Up next, some comments from Longhorn's head
coach Steve Sarkisian from today's media zoom availability when we
continue on thirteen under the Zone. Back here on Thursday
afternoon on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
Speaker 2 (51:54):
Glad to have you with us.
Speaker 1 (51:55):
Craig Wade joined by the producer Jay Carman here on
ThisDay afternoon.
Speaker 2 (52:01):
Hey, it's.
Speaker 1 (52:03):
Time for our d J. C Law injury update for
long worn football. So of course the source for that
would be the SEC Student Athlete Availability Report. It was
released last night and it will be released again. Well,
(52:26):
it'll be updated going into tomorrow and then it will
there'll be one final student athlete availability report on Saturday,
ninety minutes before kickoff. So here it is right down
the Longhorns in the doubtful category, and we kind of
figured it would be like this.
Speaker 2 (52:47):
CJ. Baxter.
Speaker 1 (52:49):
I doubt we're going to see he's listed as doubtful,
so I doubt, yeah, that will see.
Speaker 2 (52:53):
CJ on the field on Saturday in Dallas.
Speaker 1 (52:55):
Probable good signs here Malik Mohammad, who was a game
time decision and had to be scratched from the lineup
last Saturday in Florida, and you could see the difference
with him not on the field. This is nothing against
Kobe Black or Kate Phillips or whoever Grayson Littleton when
he spun down to the corner. It's just that Malik
(53:18):
is a veteran corner and Florida saw that hole there
and took advantage of it. With Dallas Wilson, they're really
talented freshman receiver making his debut. So Malik Muhammad's list
is probable. That's another kid from the Dallas Forward metroplex,
going back to Dallas in fact, growing up not far
from the cotton ball. So he's listed as problem and
(53:40):
Parker Livingston has listed this problem and that's good too,
considering what a hard tackle that was and the tumble
he hurt with his leg. I think everybody kind of
held their breath.
Speaker 2 (53:49):
There for a moment.
Speaker 3 (53:49):
Yeah, there was a lot of wincing when that was
played where I was watching the game, and it looked
a lot, hopefully, it looked a lot worse than it was.
Speaker 2 (53:58):
Right that he has listed as problem. Memory.
Speaker 1 (54:00):
He did come back and play in the game, but
you could tell he wasn't one hundred percent, but he's
listed his problem for the game. For Oklahoma, they have
four guys out. Three offensive linemen Troy Evert, Jacob Sexton,
Jake Taylor, and the tight end K McIntyre. Another offensive lineman,
Logan Howard, has listed as doubtful questionable. Keantes Lewis that's
the receiver ran into the wall, the brick wall in
(54:22):
the Oklahoma game. And yes, John Mattier, the quarterback, is
listed as questionable. When Toby Rowland, the Sooners play by
play voice, was home with us on Tuesday, at that
time on Tuesday, he personally he put it at about
sixty percent. He thought that Materi would play, and I
(54:42):
know Steve Sarkisian's expecting him to play. He said so
in the news conference on Monday, he said so last
night when we recorded Long Worn Weekly, and you can
hear that tonight at seven o'clock here on the zone
and it re airrs tomorrow night at seven as well.
Even during a commercial break, and I had my broadcast
charts out because it makes for quick reference for him,
(55:03):
you know, to look at a certain position or whatever
for the opponent or whatever. And he looked and he
pointed at my tears box that I have on my
broadcast chart. He goes, he's gotta play. Don't you think
gotta play?
Speaker 3 (55:17):
Well? I mean you would think that Texas kid, right
coming back to play his only chance to play in
this game. And then you think about is that hand
going to be susceptible right if he takes a hit.
I mean, their schedule is ridiculous after this game, Craig,
if it wasn't such a big rivalry, I think they
hold him out. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (55:35):
I think he may be right that they would.
Speaker 1 (55:37):
I mean, he's eighteen days out of surgery away from
that surgery now, so we'll see about that.
Speaker 2 (55:42):
All right.
Speaker 1 (55:43):
So there's our dj clall injury update. Let's hear some
more from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkashan asked about his
Running game. He's talked quite a bit about the Running Game.
I think a lot of folks thought Jerk Gibson, because
he was a Gainsful Native, even though he played an
img acat me, might have been more involved with the.
Speaker 2 (56:03):
Offense than he was.
Speaker 1 (56:04):
Who was asked about Gibson in the fact that he
wasn't as involved and who really would be the one
to handle interior running plays.
Speaker 4 (56:12):
Definitely was a flow of the game. You know, the
game did clearly last week did not go the way
we had intended. You know, Jerk is our short yardage
back and we just we didn't have any short yardage
opportunities first of all, so he would have been the
first guy in it if that would have that would
have been called upon. And then you know, I think
at the end of the day, we evaluate the guys
(56:33):
week in and week out of where they're at, and
you know, different style of runs are better for certain players.
And in last week's ball game, you know, we really
felt that that the strength of Florida was their their
interior defensive lineman. Granted we probably didn't get enough credit
to all of their defensive front. They were really good
and and we didn't play great. Uh and then when
(56:54):
it turns into you know, a pass happy game and
you're throwing the ball, sometimes you got to have your
your receiving type and you're past protecting backs out there
to make those plays. But you know, hopefully it's a
good sign of jerrickson there more this week. That's a
good sign for us. So hopefully he gets some more opportunities.
Speaker 1 (57:09):
All Right, next, he was asked about the schemes employed
by Oklahoma's first year offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle. I remember
our Buckle had been Washington in State and he brought
John Matier with him, and many, including Sark, who have
examined the success of a tier give him credit for
(57:31):
a lot of the plays he makes and the dynamism
that he exhibits on the field. However, it is quickly
added at that point that it's a big part of
why Oklahoma is successful offensively is because of Ben R.
Speaker 2 (57:47):
Buckle.
Speaker 4 (57:47):
I think what makes them difficult is, you know, coach
R Buckle, the system they run is really the air raid. Okay,
and so let's go back to Mike Leach and think
about you know, him throwing the ball sixty sixty five
times a game and spreading the field, and so the
pass game comes from the air raid. But I think
what coach r Buckle has done a great job of
(58:09):
very similar maybe Coach Levy at Mississippi State, they they
tax you with the quarterback run game. So the quarterback
run game has become a bigger part of the air
raid offense for them, as well as he's got all
of the other situational plays, you know, whether it's trick plays,
(58:30):
whether it's third and one, third and two type things
where they situationally are just better than the air raid
was fifteen twenty years ago. When you know coach Leach,
to his credit, he was true to who he was.
You know, it was third and one. He's going to
be in a spread set and might be throwing go balls,
you know, four verts down the field. That's who Coach
Leech was. I think that where Coach r. Buckle has
(58:52):
evolved this offense too. They have all that, but they've
got short yardage offense, they've got quarterback runs, and so
there's a lot of offense that you have to prepare for.
We are always we are always studying people. We're always
stealing things from other people. I mean, that's that's I'm
not going to sit here and pretend to, you know,
invent every play we run. You know, a lot of
(59:12):
what we get is from other college teams or NFL teams,
sometimes high school teams. You're watching a high school tape,
you can find things and it's not always that exact play,
but it can definitely spurn a thought of something that
could fit to what we do. And so there's a
lot of that that goes on throughout the week as
we prepare from one opponent to the next one.
Speaker 1 (59:34):
More from Sark this about team attitude and approach and
the coaches and you know, all the old school stuff
about how you know, how much did you get on
the guys, did you really write them really hard? Did
you have the and this is popular phraseology. Isn't it
come to Jesus meeting? Did he have one of those
with the team?
Speaker 4 (59:51):
I think more importantly, the come to Jesus meeting kind
of happened on Monday morning at our good, bad, and ugly.
I don't think I needed to have another one. That
might have been a little redundant. But but I also
you know, when you point out the penalties in the game,
you know one on defense. You know, we had another
hands to the face penalty. This time it happened to
(01:00:11):
be for Michael Taff on defense, which you know, unintended.
You know, sometimes that can happen. You know, where I
think we need to improve is some of the self
inflicted wounds on the offensive side of the ball, and
whether the the pre snat penalties, whether it's knowing when
to let go of somebody that you're blocking, especially when
you're on an edge, because that's when the officials can
(01:00:33):
see them best. And if you think about some of
the holding penalties we've gotten this year, a lot of
them have been on the edge. Both of them last
week we're on the edge, one by a tackle, one
by a tight end. And so it's it's playing the
game and understanding where the ball is going and and
when it's time to let go of somebody that you
don't get to hold, and generally that's when holdings occur.
We need to be better in that aspect of the game.
(01:00:54):
So they come to Jesus, really occurred Monday. I didn't
I didn't think I needed to have another one.
Speaker 1 (01:00:58):
Okay, all right, we'll hear some more from Longhorn's head coach,
Steve Sarkisian coming up next hour, and we'll be back
to wrap up hour number two here on thirteen Under
the Zone, third and final hour of the program here
on Sports Radio AM thirteen Under the Zone here on
this Thursday afternoon. Glad to have you with us as
(01:01:19):
we head toward that Texas owe you weekend. You know
one thing we need to do, Jake, We need to
review because we did it back a few weeks ago
when the winners were first announced, but just to review
the State Fair food winners because you know me, I'm
a bit of a foodie anyway. But it's such an
(01:01:42):
unusual thing. When I was on a zoom this morning
with our good friend Toby Roland, the play by play
voice of the Oklahoma Sooners, he was on with a
couple of days ago, and I did a thing with
him for their television special and we got to talking
about food and you know, corn dogs and turkey legs
(01:02:04):
and all the other exotic stuff too, because we're up
for just about anything.
Speaker 3 (01:02:09):
Fried Oreo, bring it, Fried, Twinkie, bring it.
Speaker 2 (01:02:13):
I like.
Speaker 3 (01:02:13):
I like the fried sweets, the funnel cake.
Speaker 1 (01:02:15):
Yeah yeah, I kind of drew the line at deep
fried butter.
Speaker 3 (01:02:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:02:20):
I wasn't up for that so much.
Speaker 3 (01:02:22):
That's a little bit you're cutting out the middle man.
Speaker 1 (01:02:24):
Yeah yeah, yeah, so I kind of I kind of
dodged that. But a lot of the other stuff. I
did a peanut butter thing a couple of years ago or.
Speaker 2 (01:02:33):
Three years ago. That was just amazing. Uh So, anyway,
we'll hit some of that coming up a little bit.
Speaker 1 (01:02:39):
Hey, we were talking about Major League Baseball and the playoffs.
We'll resume one hour from now. The Dodgers and Phillies
will play Game four o their NLDS in Los Angeles tonight,
Cubs and Brewers. They'll be doing their thing at Wrigley Field.
And if the Brewers went, they advanced to the NLCS.
(01:03:01):
If the Dodgers win at home, they advanced to the NLCS.
If the Phillies win that game, Dodgers and Phillies will
go back to Philly for a decisive fifth game on Saturday.
If the Cubs win, it'll go back to Milwaukee for
a decisive fifth game on Saturday. So we'll see how
those turn out. They'll be a decisive fifth game in
(01:03:22):
the ALDS tomorrow night between the Tigers and the Mariners
in Seattle.
Speaker 2 (01:03:27):
And of course, the Blue Jays put the Yankees on
the shelf.
Speaker 1 (01:03:29):
They eliminated them by winning Game four last night, so
Toronto was through to the ALCS, and they've got home
field advantage for out the American League Playoffs. Milwaukee as
homefield Advanagher out the National League Payoffs. If it should
be the Brewers and Blue Jays meeting in the World Series,
Milwaukee would have home field advantage. They had the best
record in all the baseball all right, So that's Major
(01:03:51):
League baseball.
Speaker 2 (01:03:53):
College baseball.
Speaker 1 (01:03:55):
The University of Texas announced it's twenty twenty six schedule today.
Jim Schlastnagels said, Texas baseball is built on competing against
the best from the SEC to Our non conference slate
will face programs and bring out the best in us.
This schedule is designed to help our team grow, develop
and be it its strongest when the postseason arrives. Now,
(01:04:18):
let me tell you some things before we run down
some of this. It's a fifty four game regular season schedule. Now,
I know there are many of you out there go
aren't you allowed to play fifty six? And the answer
is yes. However, in this day and age, to play
a fifty six game regular season schedule, it makes for
(01:04:39):
at least a couple of times where you have to
play a double midweek, like a Tuesday and a Wednesday.
You'd have to do that at least twice, probably with
the way the calendar is set up. And Jim schlasangle
is he's not a fan of the double midweeks because
you've got to put your energies and you're pitching into
your weekend series, so double midweek of you know, take
(01:05:01):
some pitching. That's why he had the back to back
weekends of exhibition games against Division one opposition Texas Tech,
a twelve inning exhibition out of Dell Diamond Lamar last
Friday at UFCU dish faul Field. Those games do not
count against your record in twenty twenty six, which would
(01:05:23):
be one in one because they beat Texas Tech and
lost the twelve inning exhibition to Lamar. You're looking at
different players and pitchers and things like that. It doesn't
count against your record, but it does count against the
number of games you can schedule. So fifty four is
the most they can schedule. So they're going to start
the season with eight straight home games. In fact, out
(01:05:45):
of the fifty four games, thirty four will be at
UFC dish fauk Field. Twenty four of the thirty four
will come against ten different teams that went to the
NCAA Tournament last year. So they're going to start twenty
twenty six with eight straight home contests. Began play on
February thirteenth with the opener of a three game series
against UC Davis. Yes, they are Division One weekend series.
(01:06:10):
Lamar comes in from midweek matchup on Tuesday the seventeenth.
Then they'll host Michigan State at home, then a midwek
against ut Rio Grand Valley and that finishes the eight
game homestand and then they're going to go to the
Astros Foundation College Classic. They're at dyke In Park in Houston,
and over the three days they'll play Coastal Carolina, the
(01:06:31):
national runner up this past year. They'll play Baylor, who
they've not seen in a while, and they'll play Ohio State.
That's a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at dyk In Park.
The home schedule in SEC play includes Ole miss in
mid March, Oklahom at the end of March, Alabama and
(01:06:52):
mid April, Mississippi State at the front part of April,
and Missouri to close out the regular season in mid May.
Mississippi State will be on the front end of May
and Missouri at the end of May. The road series
and SEC play at Auburn in late March at South Carolina.
First weekend in April at a and m in the
(01:07:14):
Cotton Holdings Loan Star Showdown series that's April tenth through
the twelfth, Vanderbilt on the road in late April, and
Tennessee going.
Speaker 2 (01:07:21):
Into mid May.
Speaker 1 (01:07:24):
So that's the Texas schedule, and again the Longhorns will
open it against against UC Davis February thirteenth, that'll be
that will be the season opener for the Longhorns there.
So that got released today, the SEC scheduling, because I
(01:07:49):
know people are going to be curious about this, the
SEC schedule. Folks will say, wait a minute, a minute,
You're not playing Arkansas, not playing LSU, playing LSU. Remember
they played LSU at home in Arkansas on the road
last year. They also played Florida at home, and Florida
(01:08:11):
is not on the schedule this year on this stretch.
Speaker 3 (01:08:14):
Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, Tennessee is jumping out to me.
Speaker 2 (01:08:17):
Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
Speaker 1 (01:08:21):
This this particular schedule obviously does not include all of
the teams in conference played that they played last year,
both home and on the road, and it does have
some teams that they didn't play last year, like Tennessee,
like Vanderbilt, but they go to Auburn. They had Auburn
and home last year. They don't have Georgia on the
(01:08:42):
schedule this year. They had Georgia at home O Kentucky. No,
Kentucky went to Kentucky last year. But obviously Texas A
and M's on the schedule, but Arkansas is not so
so and Oklahoma is on the schedule. So again, it
starts off Friday, the thirteenth of February with You See
Davis three games, then Lamar midweek on Tuesday, the seventeenth
(01:09:06):
home series against Michigan State.
Speaker 2 (01:09:07):
This is the way, and Jim Schlasnicle talked about.
Speaker 1 (01:09:10):
This last year when Texas played at in Arlington. When
they played up in Arlington at at Globalife Field, he said,
I normally do not like to start the season on
the road or even at a neutral site in one
(01:09:32):
of these big events. I like to have at least
one home series first. Well, he's got two in fact,
two and two midweeks. So eight straight games at home
to open You See Davis, followed by Lamar, followed by
three against Michigan State, followed by one against U t
Rio Grand Valley. Then they go to the Astros Foundation
College Classic, a Friday night game against Coastal Carolina, a
(01:09:55):
Saturday game against Baylor, and a Sunday game. SATURDA night
game against Baylor and a Sunday afternoon game at two
o'clock game against Ohio State. They follow that with a
midweek against Houston Christian. Then they play USC Upstate at home.
Speaker 2 (01:10:10):
Are you familiar with US C Upstate?
Speaker 3 (01:10:13):
You are Spartanburg.
Speaker 2 (01:10:14):
Very good.
Speaker 3 (01:10:14):
I've got a good friend that networks with the Tailgators.
He was a guest on this show when I filled
in hosting a couple of weeks ago. Yeah, it was
broadcasted many a game for USC Upstate. You still used
to work for the station that carries their games.
Speaker 1 (01:10:26):
Okay, and that's the Spartans right in Spartanburg, USC Upstate.
Speaker 3 (01:10:30):
Out of the Big South.
Speaker 1 (01:10:31):
Yeah, and that region of the state of South Carolina
is known as upstate. It's the northwestern part of the
state kind of you know, you have to go even
a little further northwest, go to Clemson. It's just a
little further out there, but it's upstate. So they play
Presbyterian not too far the Blue host. Yeah, yeah, in Clinton,
South Carolina. That's right Furman in Greenville. So in fact,
(01:10:54):
now Wafford there too. Yes, absolutely, in Spartanburg. So they
play US Upstate. Then they have a road game they
only have. I think I'm gonna double check this. I
think they only have two mid week non conference road games.
Speaker 3 (01:11:13):
Yep.
Speaker 1 (01:11:13):
One is the one they play every year in San
Marcos and that's on March tenth against Texas State. Then
they open SEC play at home against Ole Miss, who
they did not play last year. Then they have a
midweek against Charlton State at home. Then they go to Auburn,
(01:11:33):
and then after that then they go to Houston.
Speaker 2 (01:11:36):
Yep.
Speaker 1 (01:11:36):
That's the other midweek non conference game they played. Remember
they were gonna play Houston last year at home and
they got rained out. That was gonna be the home
opener after they played the three games in Arlington, and
that home opener got rained out against Houston. But they'll
play there in Houston on March twenty fourth. Then they
(01:11:58):
go to Oklahoma.
Speaker 3 (01:11:59):
Yeah, get into the part where well, not quite well,
we're getting to the part where it's almost time to
strap in for a crazy stretch. Yeah, comes in May.
Speaker 1 (01:12:07):
Yeah, that's it, right, But they but they have back
to back road conference series on weekends at Oklahoma final
weekend in March, they come home for a midweek non
conference game against Texas State, and then they go to Columbia,
South Carolina to play the game Cocks.
Speaker 2 (01:12:25):
So they've got them for three.
Speaker 3 (01:12:27):
And that's that's a series that starts on a Thursday.
Kind of a quirk there, Well.
Speaker 2 (01:12:30):
It's Easter weekend.
Speaker 1 (01:12:31):
Oh and and I'm glad you brought this up. This
was not in the press release, but we let we
need to let people know this. This schedule as it's
release right now. The way I understand.
Speaker 2 (01:12:46):
It is subject to change.
Speaker 1 (01:12:50):
Moving one series to a Thursday Friday Saturday other than
that Easter weekend series is possible, but this is the
plan schedule. That's why they released.
Speaker 2 (01:12:58):
It for now.
Speaker 1 (01:13:00):
But for now, Thursday Friday Saturdays what they have for
South Carolina in Columbia. Then a midweek game against Incarnate
Word at home, followed by the Cotton Holdings Lone Star
Showdown weekend series in College Station. Yes, Jimshlastingle returning to
the Brasses Valley, we know all that that entails. When
(01:13:22):
the Long Runs play the Aggies.
Speaker 2 (01:13:24):
Then they have a home they have no midweek game
after that, and.
Speaker 1 (01:13:33):
They come back for a series at home against Alabama
at UFCU dish fog Field, who they did not play
last year. Then a midweek game against Air Force. That's
become an annual thing, is the Academy flies and every
year and they played two or three teams, and it's
always a real interesting story how those guys have such
(01:13:55):
respect for those guys, you know, future defenders of our nation.
And they get in like one of those C one transports,
you know, where they're sitting on like paratrooper like seats.
It's not a comfortable charter flight. And they fly in
and they play, and they might bust up to Waco
or down to the Valley, or over to Corpus or
(01:14:16):
over to Houston or College Station or Sam Marcus whatever.
They wind up playing it because it's usually during their
spring break. They play a few games and they always play.
They used to play a double midweek here, but again
James Lostenkle would prefer just to play the one midweek,
and that's what's going to happen. They'll do that. Then
they go to Vanderbilt. They go to Nashville for a
(01:14:36):
three game weekend series against Vanderbilt, come home for a
midweek game against Ham Houston. Then they remain at home
for a conference series to open the month of May
with Mississippi State. They have a midweek game against the
team that ended their season last year, UGSA.
Speaker 3 (01:14:50):
That's the midweek they caught my eye.
Speaker 1 (01:14:52):
Yeah, and Pat Hallmark is still the head coach at UTSA.
Speaker 2 (01:14:56):
They were able to hold on him.
Speaker 1 (01:14:58):
He was one of the hot coach games when he
managed to guide them to the super regionals. But he's
still there. They'll play UTSA at home on Tuesday, May fifth,
then they go to Knoxville to play Tennessee and then
after that they conclude on a Thursday Friday Saturday with Missouri.
And the reason that's Thursday, Friday Saturday. That's the final
(01:15:19):
weekend of the regular season and then it's off to Hoover,
Alabama for the conference tournament that begins the following week.
So everybody will conclude on the weekend of Thursday, Friday Saturday,
fourteen fifteen, sixteenth of March, so May. So there it is.
That's the Long Worn baseball schedule. It is out for
twenty twenty six. All right, coming up more from Long
(01:15:42):
Worns head football coach Steve Sarkisian when we continue on
thirteen under The zone lays great here and from the
Highwayman hearing from the iconic Willie Nelson Man, the immortal
Johnny Cash as well. Great selection. They always enjoy hearing them.
(01:16:03):
We'll continue on a Thursday afternoon here on thirteen. Underdone,
let's hear some more from Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkeshan,
and we'll start with the possibility of John Mattire in
and playing quarterback for Oklahoma. We mentioned this last hour
(01:16:23):
that sark said in his Monday news conference that he
was having his team prepare for Matteir. Now, yes, there'll
be some preparation for Michael Hawkins, but they saw Hawkins
last year. But it's their belief that Mateer, even eighteen
(01:16:44):
days removed out of surgery on that hand, on that thumb,
is going to be able to play, and he's been
working at it and trying to get ready for it,
and he's listed as questionable for the game. So sark
was asked what dynamic changes when Matier plays as opposed
(01:17:07):
to Hawkins, given that he's more experienced than the challenge
that that presents.
Speaker 4 (01:17:11):
I think definitely what he brings to the psyche of
their team. First of all, you know, I think it's
like anything I've said this before about a quarterback, a
quarterback's got a ton of responsibilities. He's got to throw it,
he's got to run it. He's got to change protections.
He's got to snap the ball before the snap count,
you know that, the playclock. He's got to do a
lot of things. But one of the biggest responsibilities of
(01:17:33):
a quarterback is to instill belief in the team, in
the organization and the fan base, so on and so forth.
And I think John Mattier has done that for you.
You know, he's instilled a lot of belief in that
organization when he takes the field that they they're they're
I don't know if they're a better team than that.
Maybe they were before just his presence alone, and so
I think that's something that he provides them on top
(01:17:56):
of the skill set, his ability to run the ball,
his competitive spear, his ability to throw the ball out
of the pocket, his comfort level with coach r Buckle
from their time at Washington State. So there's added things
to that. But I think the one thing he does
is and still belief for their team.
Speaker 1 (01:18:11):
Okay, so there's that. Now A question about the long
wern't offensive the entire offensive line, other than because the
grades reflected this other than DJ Campbell, the entire offensive
line struggled last Saturday against Florida center. Left guard, left tackle,
(01:18:34):
right guard, right tack, I mean right tackle. There, Campbell
at right guard grated out well, others not so much.
There's been a rotation, so I might even say a shuffle,
but certainly a rotation at left guard to try to
find some consistency. Connor stro the sophomore, Neto Amosulu the
(01:18:58):
junior h even Nick Brooks, a freshman worked in there
at left guard and drew a couple of penalties last week.
So there were those those kinds of things that happened.
So clearly it brought out a question. Cole Hudson started
it guard. He's now the center and it's played pretty
(01:19:20):
well at center, but obviously he started as a guard.
So Sark was asked the question, and he did answer this,
although he did it in very short order. He was
asked if they were considering the possibility of moving Cole
Hudson from center back to guard.
Speaker 4 (01:19:40):
No, we've considered it.
Speaker 2 (01:19:42):
That one's it so.
Speaker 3 (01:19:46):
Cricket cricket, Yeah, and then nice question.
Speaker 1 (01:19:49):
Please, yeah, you know, and and and that's not on
Danny Davis he's he's doing his job as a reporter
from The Statesman asked the question. Obviously, Sark is wildly
enough when it comes to dressing reporters that he will
answer the question without necessarily giving you great illumination as
(01:20:13):
to what they are considering, because he doesn't want that information.
Speaker 2 (01:20:16):
Out before the game.
Speaker 1 (01:20:18):
So he answered the question, would you consider movement, Yeah,
we've considered it.
Speaker 2 (01:20:23):
If that's but.
Speaker 1 (01:20:25):
We always not going to elaborate, is my point, right,
He's not gonna he's not gonna elaborate.
Speaker 3 (01:20:31):
He will always take yes, no questions you know, at
face value, He'll he'll elaborate and expand when you know.
Speaker 2 (01:20:37):
Yeah, most of the time. Well, and I would say
this too.
Speaker 1 (01:20:44):
You can ask him a question of elaboration, but that
doesn't necessarily mean he's going to elaborate on the answer.
It's just he's going to let you know what he
thinks is important for him to say and to let
it ride from there. That's I think that's the best
way to describe it. He was asked about the offense again.
(01:21:10):
Lots of questions about the offense, lots of questions about
the atmosphere of Texas. Ou Now, I thought The question
was a little bit interesting in that somebody said, what
gives you confidence that the offense can weather this atmosphere? Well,
the atmosphere is half friendly.
Speaker 2 (01:21:30):
You know.
Speaker 1 (01:21:30):
There are ninety two thousand people who will be in
the Cotton Bowl roughly on Saturday. Forty six thousand of
them roughly will be wearing crimson and cream. They will
occupy the south end, the end where the tunnel is.
Speaker 3 (01:21:46):
And I think it was just as much about the
ups and the downs as it is the level of
noise based on what yard you're at.
Speaker 1 (01:21:52):
Yeah, Yeah, And like I said, it'll be forty six
thousand burned orange predominantly on the north end. By the way,
there's a little way up at the top of the
north end where you see some red in there that
goes to Oklahoma fans those tickets to even out to
make it the exact same amount of tickets, because you
had that opening there with the tunnel, and so some
(01:22:13):
of those seats you lose with the tunnel they have
to make up for in a couple other spots. So
while by and large the north end is burnt orange
and white, and by and large the south end is
crimson and cream. While it's like that these little patches,
there a couple of them.
Speaker 3 (01:22:33):
Anybody ever tried to sit on the fifty with a
shirt divided down the middle?
Speaker 2 (01:22:36):
That's funny.
Speaker 1 (01:22:38):
It's just like I was saying to Toby the other day,
Tobey Roland, if I were not broadcasting the game, and
I feel blessed to be broadcasting it again, But if
I were not broadcasting the game, I would want to
sit on the fifty on the end of the aisle
(01:22:58):
of the Texas side where the Oklahoma side on the
south side begins, just across the aisle, just to hear
the conversations that might go on. There's probably a lot
of that, so that that would be pretty cool, just
to just to be there on it. But Sark was
asked about the atmosphere and the environment of everything that
surrounds the Red River rivalry and if he feels his
(01:23:22):
offense can handle it.
Speaker 4 (01:23:23):
There's two sides to this one. In both games out
Ohio State and Florida, you know we had opportunities. You know,
the House Steak game, we drive the ball down to
the one yard line and we I call a terrible call.
We don't score on the quarterback sneak, we drive down again,
we have to go forward. On fourth down, we don't
(01:23:45):
hit it, we drive down again, we score, we get
the ball again, we're driving again at the end of
the game. So I think that the competitive spirit on offense,
and the same thing kind of happened last week. Even
though we had some missed opportunities at Florida, our guys
fought their way and stayed engaged in the game and
had an opportunity to get back into the game. Now
we can help ourselves on two different fronts. One play
(01:24:07):
better earlier in the game and execute a little more
soundly earlier in the game. And to be more efficient
on first and second down. You know, too many times
we're forced into third nine, third and ten, third and eleven,
third and twelve. That's not a formula for success. And
so we've got to be more efficient on first and
second down. We got to minimize some of the self
(01:24:28):
inflicted wounds that maybe we maybe it is going to
be a third and four now becomes a third and
nine because we jump off side, and so some of
those things we can control. But ultimately I fall back
to I know, if some adversity does strike our offense,
is going to continue to fight and fight back and
remain really competitive, because they showed me that in those
in those two ball games that we've already played on
(01:24:50):
the road.
Speaker 1 (01:24:51):
Yeah, that's that's important to be able to have that
kind of fight, to be able to do that, because otherwise,
if you don't have fight, you don't have a shot
in the game. So they've got to be they've got
to be sure to have that kind of attitude to
(01:25:13):
be ready for the atmosphere and the environment and everything
else is where. So all of that I think is
really really important for them, and then the individual guys,
you know, how how the veterans deal with it, how
the young guys deal with it. You know. The other day,
(01:25:37):
Michael Taff was asked if he kind of does a
stop and smell the roses kind of thing, if he
if he takes the opportunity to, uh, you know, soak
in the atmosphere, and he said, I do it every year.
I've I've done it every year that he takes the
(01:25:58):
opportunity to walk out on the field and you know, have.
Speaker 2 (01:26:05):
Breathe in it, take it all in, so to speak.
Speaker 1 (01:26:09):
Another one of the young offensive linemen that Sark was
asked about was Nate Kibble and Sark was asked about
the progress that this guy has made. We're talking about
a red shirt freshman out of a TASKA seat in
the Houston area.
Speaker 2 (01:26:25):
Big fellow.
Speaker 1 (01:26:26):
He's three hundred and thirty pounder, and Sark was asked,
you know, what kind of progress has he made and
what is he showing him? And Kyle Flood, who handles
the offensive line and the coaching staff overall.
Speaker 4 (01:26:36):
Date, it's a physical player. You know, he's he's growing,
he's developing. You know, his progress has been one that
we're continued trying to push him again. He's another guy.
It's fighting for consistency and it's day in and day out,
it's playing and play out consistency that we're striving for.
Speaker 1 (01:26:53):
All right, And one more from Sart. This was all
from today's Thursday Media Zoom, which is the final media
availability for local area, regionally the national media to visit
with Sark about this and he was asked about peak
wick Kowski and the way that he has brought his
(01:27:16):
defensive unit along. And it's a little bit different when
you're facing an air raid type of offense. And while
it might be set up that way, Oklahoma does rely
on its running game more than than some other air
raid type offenses are. But Sark was asked how PK
has evolved and how he approaches with his defensive unit
(01:27:39):
and air raid attack.
Speaker 4 (01:27:41):
I think the one thing that the air raid does
a great job of is if you sit in in
in something that has answers. The play caller generally has
options to manipulate the call. The receivers have opportunities to
change routes and you got it. You got to make
be patient, you know. And I think that's one of
(01:28:02):
the challenges that the air raid. You know, the moment
you say you know what, let's go get them boom,
they throw it over your head, right or they throw
a wheel route to the running back when you're not looking,
you know, because you get overly aggressive. So I think
you got to force them to be patient. You got
to try to find a way to affect the quarterback,
you know. I think if if the quarterback's just standing
back there patting the ball, it can be a long
day against the air raid. So but again, this new
(01:28:24):
age air raid, now it's quarterback driven run. So you
got to make sure you deploy the right amount of
people to protect the box, and I think the last
piece to defend in the air raid. You got to
do a great job on the perimeter, you know, with
all the perimeter screens and the advantage throws. You know,
your corners, your safeties, your stars got to do a
great job of when they throw those throws, you got
(01:28:44):
to tackle really well. You got to be physical on
the perimeter and you got to get people on the ground.
You're not just giving up free yardage on some of
those perimeter plays.
Speaker 1 (01:28:52):
All right, there, It is audio from Long Ends Long
One head coach Steve Sarcasian. Again, that was his last
media availability of the week with the media. Tonight, however,
Longhorn Weekly with Coach Sark comes you way at seven
o'clock here on the Zone. It ree airs tomorrow night
at seven, and then I'll visit with him just inside
(01:29:13):
of two hours to kick off on Saturday, to get
the last word from him on the health and the
guys who are ready to go, and the approach and
the environment and the atmosphere of the Red River rivalry.
Speaker 2 (01:29:25):
And you can hear that on our pregame. Of course.
Speaker 1 (01:29:27):
Our coverage boot will begin at ten thirty Saturday morning,
and that will happen with the third and long worn
podcast guys their preview program at ten thirty. Then at
eleven thirty it'll be Longhorn's Game Day from the Fairgrounds
right at the Old Mill restaurant there, and it'll be
(01:29:52):
Cam Parker, Mike Hardboharge, Mark Henry and a lot of
special guests. That's at eleven thirty. And then of course
network pregame at one thirty, and it'll be just before kickoff.
Kickoff will be about two forty five. It'll be about
two thirty when we have that last word with Sark
when I go down and do the visit with him.
You'll hear that right around two thirty if you're tuned in.
(01:30:13):
By the way, if you're going to Dallas for the
game and you want to listen to us, there's a
couple of different ways.
Speaker 2 (01:30:19):
The Cotton Bowl.
Speaker 1 (01:30:21):
One our Dallas Fort Worth affiliate, very very strong signal
news radio ten eighty KRLD, where I've worked for twelve
years up there before moving down here. And usually I'll
just say usually usually they are in pre delay, they're
not in delay, so you can hear it in real time.
We also have a road radio frequency up there inside
(01:30:42):
a fair park, and that's usually on eighty seven point
seven FM. So if you're going up there and you
want to listen to us on your headset radios, you
can do that on eighty seven point seven FM or
on ten eighty AM on that All right, coming up
an admission by announced pro football player that you don't
hear every day.
Speaker 2 (01:31:04):
That's next. I'm thirteen under the Zone.
Speaker 1 (01:31:07):
Glad to have you with us here on a Thursday afternoon,
getting ready for Texas. Ou we Hey, I wanted to
get to this story. It was a little bit bizarre.
You watched the Monday night game, right, You saw the
Jacksonville Kansas City game.
Speaker 2 (01:31:25):
Correct?
Speaker 3 (01:31:26):
Yeah, it was a weird experience watching afterwards, knowing the
Jags won, but seeing.
Speaker 2 (01:31:31):
Oh that's right, you saw that fact, right. Okay.
Speaker 1 (01:31:35):
The weirdest, to use your term, the weirdest part of
all of it had to be with thirty seconds left,
the Jaguars were at the one yard line.
Speaker 2 (01:31:44):
They're down twenty four to twenty.
Speaker 1 (01:31:46):
Trevor Lawrence got stepped on pulling out a center by
his left guard. Falls, starts to get up, falls again,
then gets up and kind of rolls around the end
and he and he manages to make it across the
goal line for the winning score. Now, the anchor, I
(01:32:08):
think it's safe to say, you correct me if you
think I'm wrong on this. The anchor of the Kansas
City Chiefs defense certainly of their defense in front of
Chris Jones. Yeah, Jones. What is it they like to
say in soccer ball watching? Got caught ball watching?
Speaker 2 (01:32:28):
He didn't.
Speaker 1 (01:32:29):
He just kind of watched it from the middle of
the field, and he didn't really make much of an
effort to go and tackle Lawrence. It reminded me of
the great phrase that the Hall of Fame, great broadcaster
of the Detroit Tigers, Ernie Harwell said one time when
the guy got frozen at the plate on a cold
(01:32:50):
third strike, and Ernie said, and gay Lines stood there
like a house by the side of the roads. And
Joe Davis used that he drops it in on occasion,
and he always gives the the reference to it. But
it is it said that I've used in a long
worn baseball But when I've done it, I always say,
as the great Ernie Harwell once said, he stood there
(01:33:14):
like a house by the side of the road. I
Vin Scully was certainly one of my broadcast heroes. And
one of the phrases that he used a couple of
different ones, and I would always give a creditation to it.
One if a guy took a swing on a ball
and just barely make contact contact and sound like a
dead thud. It was like a slow roller and he's
(01:33:36):
out and said it sounded like he hit it with
the morning paper, you know, or hit it with the newspaper.
All right, So there's that and then the other one.
And I use this one quite frequently because I do
think it's a propos when you get to account in
a ballgame, especially, And I only really use this in
a crucial situation.
Speaker 2 (01:33:54):
But Vin Scully used to use it.
Speaker 1 (01:33:56):
If the bases are loaded and there's two outs and
the count goes to balls and two strikes, what did
he always say, Well, we've gone as far as we
can go, because you know, other than a foul ball,
something's going to happen on the next pitch. The runners
are going to be off, the batter's gonna be swinging
or or looking at what he hopes is a final strike.
(01:34:19):
So he goes, well, we've gone as far as we
can go, and that's it pretty much. He's gone as far.
Speaker 3 (01:34:25):
As he could go, perfect as he was.
Speaker 1 (01:34:28):
Yeah, so anyway, Chris Jones was kind of standing there
like a house by the side of the road. And
then and he said afterwards, he said, this week today
the news conference asked me about how come you didn't
go after he goes, And here's his quote. It's a
(01:34:50):
teaching point for me, a little adversity. I can't think
the play is over. It's a learning lesson. I thought
it was over. I thought we had him down, So
I kind of stopped and was about to celebrate, and
then I realized he wasn't down. He said he would
do better going forward, that the incident won't happen again.
He also shared that he had deactivated his x and
(01:35:11):
Instagram accounts prior to Monday's game. The opposite of what
a lot of fans thought happened after the loss, that's
not what happened. It was before, he said, I posted
a Drake quote. I'll see in the summer of twenty
twenty six. I'll never run from constructive criticism. I've never
been that guy. I've always addressed it head on. Actually,
(01:35:31):
it's a lot you can take from criticism it's like fuel,
like gas for me personally. I guess people wanted to
address me head on with social media and they saw
it wasn't active. They figured I deleted it for my performance,
but it was deleted a couple of days before, so
he said it'll be better. Well, he has a chance
on Sunday night when they play the Lions, so I
(01:35:51):
tim my hat to him. Anyway, he makes a mistake.
It's caught just frozen. Watches it things that play's over.
But he owned it afterwards and said shouldn't have done it.
Speaker 3 (01:36:00):
And he said, set the record straight. I didn't run
from it.
Speaker 1 (01:36:03):
No, no, no, he didn't run toward it either. All right,
we'll be back to wrap up today's program. I'm thirteen
hunder the zone.
