Welcome to the program here on Sports Radio AM thirteen
under the Zone.
Speaker 3 (05:55):
My name is Craig Way.
Speaker 1 (05:56):
Glad to have you with us today, and us, of
course includes producer Jay Carmon, who expertly crafted that game
highlight montage. You said you got a chance once you
got through engineering down at Long Bevo Boulevard for the
long Horns game day show. You had to get a
little grocery shopping in and had no trouble at all
(06:17):
in the aisles and finding a register that was open.
Speaker 4 (06:20):
Oh, it was a wide open toll road on those
grocery store aisles because I was the only the only
soul shopping while the Longhorns were out playing on a
Saturday night game at DKR. Everybody was down on Bevo
Boulevard and place was packed.
Speaker 1 (06:34):
Yeah, I was imagine the checkout clerk probably looked at you,
it's gonna be a long Horn fan.
Speaker 4 (06:40):
Oh right, No, I had my hat on. I had
my Longhorns hat on. But yeah, I'm not going to
make a habit of finding myself at AGB when the
Longhorns are starting the second half. But it was just
one of those long days, and I had a full
Sunday on deck, so got some stuff done.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
You had a full sunday on deck.
Speaker 5 (06:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (06:57):
I had a little fun sunday, seeing some family friends,
seeing a good friend of mine watching football, okay, and
got to go down, you know, off of Caesar Chavez,
watch some Dallas Cowboys football in a crowd and root
for the Chicago Bears.
Speaker 3 (07:14):
After my commander's won.
Speaker 4 (07:15):
I tried not to talk too much crap.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
Yeah, I understand that.
Speaker 1 (07:18):
And then and then, of course, every time I see
Roma Doons they catch a touchdown passer with Devonte Smith.
Speaker 3 (07:23):
Which I was watching obviously.
Speaker 1 (07:24):
That for Rams fans disastrous end of the Rams Eagles
game yesterday. I think about you and your fantasy team,
you know, pick me up. I've been a pickup during
the week for me.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
Who's that?
Speaker 4 (07:35):
How about Cam Scataboo? That could be a league winner?
Speaker 3 (07:39):
It helped me out an awful lot.
Speaker 1 (07:40):
All right, We got a lot to get to on
the program this afternoon, this being a Monday and Longhorns Monday,
we will hear from head football coach Steve Sarkisian. It's
the weekly news conference, Yesler, it is a news conference
the week of the open date. It's the one, the
one true media availability for local media. There is a
(08:02):
There is the SEC conference call the teleconference on I
say conference call a telecom they still call it that,
even though it's all done by zoom.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
But anyway, that's on Wednesday.
Speaker 1 (08:13):
But other than that, there are no other availabilities the
rest of this week, not for the players, not for
any of the coaches. No longerare weekly program with Sark
this week, No Thursday Zoom with Sark this week. So
today's press conference, which you heard live right here on
thirteen under the Zone this morning with our coverage which
(08:35):
always begins at eleven am and then at eleven thirty,
is when we bring you Sarks news conference. We brought
it to you live. Then we'll bring you the highlights
of that coming up here from the Q and A.
So we'll we'll have that coming up as well. There
are other things to get to. The combined record of
(08:56):
the two NFL teams in the lone Star State is
a robust one in five, so yeah, not good. Texans
are owing three, Cowboys are one and two. Both suffered
defeat yesterday. We'll hear from both head coaches and what
was a rather humbling experience for both of those teams yesterday.
(09:18):
So there's there's plenty to talk about that. I've got
some other college football notes, some interesting ones. To get
to the first school to be fine for faking injuries,
that news has come down the You know, if you're
wondering about Mike Gundyt Oklahoma Stateium, many are.
Speaker 3 (09:37):
He's pretty defiant today, as you might imagine.
Speaker 4 (09:40):
Come after me.
Speaker 3 (09:41):
Yeah, I'm a man. That was the eighteenth anniversary of
the I'm forty I'm a man rant.
Speaker 4 (09:46):
Right now it's I'm fourteen losses in a row to
FBS schools.
Speaker 3 (09:50):
I lot that. Yeah. So anyway, well there's there's that.
Speaker 1 (09:56):
The baseball pennant races can't get any crazier in any type,
especially with the wildcard races. Although there's one division race
that it would almost really belong, and we'll give it
another week to see if it belongs an inconceivable because
it could wind up being an inconceivable finish to that.
Speaker 3 (10:14):
We'll get to that.
Speaker 1 (10:15):
So there's baseball on TOPBA And as always, we welcome
your questions, your thoughts, your comments via our text line.
What you do is text the word Texas follow by
your question or comment to eight one five to three zero.

Speaker 3 (10:47):
We'll get your feedback on this weekend as well.
Speaker 1 (10:50):

your questions and comments, feel free to do so. On
the text line, text the word texts followed by your
question of comment to eight zero standard messaging and data
(11:31):
rates may apply. All right, let's start off Longhorns head
coach Chief Sarksian. This from the Weekly News Conferences opening comments,
opening statement before we get to the Q and A part.
Speaker 6 (11:40):
As far as the game goes, just looking back on it,
meet with the players earlier today, I thought there were
some really good things. Obviously scoring on the opening drive
of the game, and with that, you know, converting three
third downs. You know, that had been somewhat of an
issue for us here for the first three games. So
to to convert three third downs, I think the first
(12:02):
one was a third and nine to DeAndre Moore and
obviously capping it off with the run there by Jared
Gibson for the touchdown was fantastic. And I think scoring
on our first nine possessions of the game, you know,
seven touchdowns of those nine, and so that that part
was great. It was definitely an explosive game for us.
(12:22):
I think we had twenty explosive plays and a variety
of guys creating those explosive plays. I think Wingo obviously
had the big touchdown catch and the long run. Ryan Niblett,
you know, showed up on a screen for an explosive
play and so a lot of different guys creating those plays,
which was big and I think it was great to
see you even going back looking at the tate from Arch,
(12:45):
you know, there was some some really high level throws.
There was a deep out to Parker early in the
game that was a heck of a throw. There was
a deep crossing route to DeAndre Moore in between two
defenders that that that took a lot of person vision,
but but through it with a lot of conviction, which
was which was great for him. And you know, his
(13:05):
ability to score touchdowns, you know, something that I think
sometimes goes unnoticed by this guy when he's in the game.
And I think he's got nine touchdown passes on the
year and five runs for touchdowns, and so his ability
to get the ball in the end zone is a factor.
Speaker 1 (13:21):
You know.
Speaker 6 (13:21):
I thought defensively, a lot of guys played and the
idea that that we had five sacks I believe by
five different players in the game is a good sign.
And you know, ten TFLs I think split amongst ten
different players, and so that's that's a great sign that
a lot of guys are playing and doing it at
a high level, you know, and and I think it
(13:43):
points to us.
Speaker 2 (13:44):
Having the ability to play complimentary football.
Speaker 6 (13:46):
Our explosive play numbers starting to get up to where
we need it to be, but yet defensively are our
ability to minimize those explosive plays is a nice balance
of how we're trying to play the game. You know,
we're plus three in the turnover margin right now, which
ultimately a simple goal for us is to be plus
whatever the number of is of games that you've played.
(14:08):
So we've played four games were at plus three. We'd
like to get that number, you know, hopefully in two
weeks to plus five, because that's you know, by the
end of the year of regular season, if you're plus twelve,
you've probably got a really good team. And that's our
style of taking care of the ball and creating turnovers.
It's twenty straight home games now we've created a turnover
in Jelan and McDonald his three straight weeks, he's been
(14:29):
a turnover machine. Had to pick this week, had to
pick last week, and then tip the ball that Gilbo
picked that intercepted two weeks ago. So he's playing at
a really high level for us right now.
Speaker 2 (14:41):
I think from a.
Speaker 6 (14:41):
Special teams perspective, and we talked about Mason Shipley, but
he's five for five on the year on field goals.
He's been kicking off the last two weeks, but he's
really it's fourteen in a row if you go back
to his time at Texas State. So he's in a
good rhythm and groove kicking field goals. And Jack continues
to punt at a high level four and it's unfortunate.
I mean, he bombs the one punt that ends up
(15:03):
in the end zone, potential block in the back. Made
his great effort by Red Anderson as a gunner, but
he's really striking the ball well. And I think now
two weeks in a row of Ryan Niblett returning punts
has been an explosive player for us there. And it's
too bad on the first punt return, we just don't
quite block it the way we would have liked.
Speaker 2 (15:23):
I think you would have had one there as well.
Speaker 6 (15:25):
So all in all, you know, through the kind of
the preseason, we've played eighty seven players so far through
four games, eight different guys have scored touchdowns and nine
different guys have carried the ball, Sixteen different guys have
caught passes. We have eleven sacks so far through four games,
(15:45):
and that's split up amongst ten different guys, and so
all in all, like we're playing a lot of players,
and now we have a pretty good sense in a
feel of who we are. I think we're gonna see
a wave of players coming back getting healthy in two
weeks for the Florida game. So we've created the depth
that we've needed and now it's about whose role is
(16:06):
is kind of what we've got. We've got a four
game sample size to look at that because you know,
we go to Florida next week, we only get to
travel seventy four players, and so we don't get to
bring the full allotment of guys like we were able.
Speaker 2 (16:18):
To early in the year.
Speaker 6 (16:20):
And so these next the next week week and a
half is going to be important for us to really
evaluate guys roles on special teams as well as their
role on offense and defense to to build the right
group that's going to travel to Gainesville for a tough
ball game here in two weeks.
Speaker 1 (16:37):
And by the way, the kickoff for the game will
be at two thirty in the afternoon on Saturday, October
fourth from Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
Speaker 3 (16:46):
Swamp in Gainesville two.
Speaker 1 (16:47):
Thirty, which means our coverage will actually begin eleven thirty
at ten thirty Saturday morning with the Third and Longhorn
Podcast Guys at ten thirty. Then at eleven thirty will
be the Longhorn Game Day Group Our Guys with Cameron
(17:07):
Parker and Mike cardboll Hard and Mark Henry. That'll be
an eleven thirty one will be the network pre game
two thirty kickoff from Gainesville, Texas against Florida. Now, other
comments from Sark this being an open date week, the
bye week on the schedule, usually that means the coaches,
you know, they they'll will practice the players for less time,
(17:30):
but they will practice them during this week. But it's
also a big recruiting week for them, the evaluation and
coaches and staff members. And it's important to distinguish the
two because not all coaches are only allowed out certain
times to go and watch high school football players. Staff
(17:50):
members different issue, and Sark talks about them both.
Speaker 6 (17:53):
It's always hard in season because they you only have
so many days that you get to be on the road.
And not only do you have some only have so
many days. You know, we like to send guys out
periodically on Thursday nights to go see guys play in person,
as well as maximizing those bye weeks, and definitely during
(18:15):
the bye weeks, I like to get out.
Speaker 2 (18:16):
I like to recruit.
Speaker 6 (18:17):
I like to get around our guys, see our committed players,
and so on and so forth. So we'll evaluate that
closely this week. You know, the one guy that we
historically like to get on the road this time of
year is Chris Gilbert. And Chris's guy obviously got you know,
does a great job, and he's a really good evaluator.
He's got good rapport with not only the players were recruiting,
(18:38):
but their families, and he's very relatable to the high
school coaches.
Speaker 2 (18:43):
And so Chris is active on that front.
Speaker 6 (18:46):
And then some guys may be out one day and
not the next day because we're trying to preserve some
days for later in the season.
Speaker 2 (18:52):
So I think we've got a good plan for this week.
Speaker 6 (18:55):
We'll be very active and knowing we have the two
buys and we have one later in year, and so
you know, you kind of do it somewhat regionally of Okay,
where are we putting the spotlight this week? And then
where are we going to try to put it on
the next week? So I think we've got a good plan,
but Gilbert will be the main one. I think that's
not an on the field coach.
Speaker 1 (19:14):
That and with respect to that second by week that
comes during the final week of the regular season of
high school football in the state of Texas. Anyway, one
other thing from Stark this hour asked about the upcoming
SEC schedule. The games that he has in front of
him obviously opened a this week, and they start on
(19:35):
the road of Florida, come back for the Red River
rivalry matchup with Oklahoma in Dallas, then back to back
road games at Kentucky, a night game at Mississippi State,
all of that in the month of October without a
game inside of DKR, Texas Memorial State. In his thoughts
his thoughts on the upcoming SEC schedule.
Speaker 6 (19:55):
I think this is you start evaluating our schedule, and
you know, I'm as excited as anybody to watch a
little football on Saturday. There's some great games this great
weekend of college football, and some high level games are
going to get played not only in our conference but
around the country.
Speaker 2 (20:11):
So that part's you know, I think.
Speaker 6 (20:13):
I think fun for us to take a step back
to see that as far as our schedule goes, you know,
are some of the teams in our conference has some
really really brutal schedules, you know, And and I look
at Florida and just kind of the gauntlet they've already
been been part of. And you know, they were you know,
(20:35):
they're at LSU one week and the next week they're
at Miami, and they're playing really well defense. I mean,
these guys are playing at a high, high level. You know,
I think they held LSU to thirteen points on offense.
You know, the one touchdown they scored was a pick six,
you know, on the road. To hold those guys to thirteen,
I mean, and they're holding Miami to thirteen points until
(20:55):
about four minutes to go, or sixteen points when I
was thinking it was thirteen with the for six minutes
to go in that game. And so they're playing at
a really high level defensively, and you know, you know,
naturally Billy Billy is a really good offensive coach, and
they just haven't found their groove quite yet offensively. But
going to the swamp, you know, there's there's people that
(21:17):
would argue it's the toughest place to play in the country.
You know, we've got two coaches in our in our
office that have that have coached there before and have
said it's the loudest place they've been. And so you
just know you're going into a hostile environment and you're
going up against a quality opponent, which we just started
the you know, looking at them, and I don't have
all the details on those guys, but I look down
(21:38):
the road of of what the rest of our schedule
is is starting to look like. Naturally, after Florida, we're
going to play in the Red River Rivalry against ou
who's as hot as any team in the country, and
they're playing great defense and the quarterback is is playing
at a high level. Got a chance to peak at
them a little bit in the first half last week.
And then you go to Kentucky at night and and shoot,
(22:00):
they had old miss on the ropes in that game.
And then you start talking about Mississippi State, who's already
knocked off Arizona State at home, and they've got a
big game this weekend against Tennessee and then I believe
we have a buy no we play then we get Vanderbilt,
who shoots all they do is they're back in the
top twenty five, and they went into South Carolina and one,
and then you know, you get a bye, and I
(22:22):
think then we go to Georgia and so they play.
They play Alabama this week and they've already won at Tennessee.
And then you get Arkansas, who they took Old Miss
to the to the wire. And then you get A
and M you know, who's as hot as any other
team in the country. And so it is what it
is in our conference. I said that all along about
the SEC. It's like as physical as we know as
(22:44):
it is, and we all know it's like you turn
on the tape of floor to the first thing that
stands out as a front and those guys are really
really good. It's the mental grind. You have to do
it every single week. There is no gimmes. And I
said this before. There's nobody in our lee league that
says they looked at their schedule say oh, yeah, that's
a win. You better come ready to play because everybody
(23:06):
is well equipped coaching wise, everybody's well equipped personnel wise,
and there's some tough places to go play that you
gotta be mentally mentally prepared.
Speaker 2 (23:16):
To play as well as well as physically prepared to play.
Speaker 3 (23:19):
All right, so there is we'll hear more from Sark
throughout the course.
Speaker 1 (23:22):
They after a couple of offerings on the text line
before we get to the break before and somebody said,
go mean green. Hey, North Texas four and oho for
the first time since twenty eighteen.
Speaker 3 (23:32):
How about that? Yeah, ot win over Army.
Speaker 1 (23:34):
Yeah, I thought it was going to get away from
They were up twenty one to nothing in twenty eight
to seven. They were up ten with about three and
a half minutes to go in the game. Went for
twice on fourth down to try to get an effort
to be able to run out the clock. Didn't converge.
Army gets a touchdown to cut it to thirty eight
thirty five with under two minutes to go. Tries it
on sidekick. North Texas were covers and then fumbles. First
(23:58):
play from scrimmage, Army comes down. North Texas held now
of the ends on the kick of field goal to
tie it, get it overtime. North Texas had the ball first,
went down, scored and then got some stops and one.
So they're four and zero and they they'll play Major
Apple Whites. South Alabama Jaguars coming up this week. The
other Texter said Arch was guilty of taunting. If it
(24:19):
was enough for unofficial electrim, it's enough for a flag,
that's fair to say. And even Art said he thought
it was probably a bit much there. He's fired up
and everything, so I will agree with you. It's probably
fair that they could have. Certainly could have. It depends
on what he said in the context or whatever, but
it certainly could have. Thin you know, one else is fair.
I haven't heard anybody else really even mention this. I
(24:42):
tip my cap to Anne Parker Coleman from Cayview posted
the video and photos of it.
Speaker 3 (24:47):
Did anybody mention it?
Speaker 1 (24:48):
Art spend his off day yesterday at the Dell Children's
Blood and Cancer Center. That he was down there, he
held a meet and greet with patients and the families,
and that every one of those around sixty kids.
Speaker 4 (25:00):
Got an iPad and a backpack.
Speaker 1 (25:02):
All that he paid for himself, photos with all of them,
and got a chance to visit with all him.
Speaker 3 (25:08):
Did anybody mention that? No, No, they didn't. But that's
fair too.
Speaker 1 (25:12):
I you know, sure, if if you want to flag
him for tawning, I don't have a problem with that,
But I'm just saying that be fair when the guy goes.
He that wasn't his obligation. He wasn't obligated to do that.
But he did that on his off day yesterday, went
down to the old children. Didn't tell anybody. It was
set up to him, but somebody down there had let
a couple of the media outlets know he was coming.
Speaker 3 (25:32):
He didn't, and they shot video of it.
Speaker 1 (25:36):
So just all I'm saying is be fair to the
guy if you if you're gonna if you're gonna rip
him for standing over an opponent or something like that.
And again I don't have a problem with that, if
you because I'm not big into the to the whole
taunting thing myself either. So if you're gonna rip him
for that, that's that's that's okay. By the same token,
I think you ought to give him credit when he
(25:56):
goes and does stuff unannounced on his own out they're taking,
you know, taking gifts to the kids are dealing with
much larger issues than he or any of the rest
of us.
Speaker 3 (26:08):
Are just my thought, all right. On Sports Radio AM
thirteen under the.
Speaker 1 (26:11):
Zone, craigwait with you alongside of the producer Jane Kerman,
glad to have you with us as well.
Speaker 3 (26:18):
Plenty to discuss.
Speaker 1 (26:21):
Here in aftermath of the long Orange went over the weekend.
Speaker 3 (26:26):
One more time, I'll.
Speaker 1 (26:27):
Try to clarify this for the angry Texter who apparently
does not like larch Manning and said he should have
been flagged. And I didn't disagree with you, by the
way on that. Then we gotten this whole deal, I said.
Not many people brought up the fact that he showed
up at Dell Children's Hospital yesterday and gave away thousands
of dollars in backpacks and iPads and did that, and.
Speaker 4 (26:50):
To which texta said, oh, yeah, he's his own camera.
Speaker 3 (26:53):
He wouldn't do it. He didn't.
Speaker 4 (26:55):
He didn't invite the media out there. The hospital notified media.
Speaker 3 (27:00):
Yah.
Speaker 1 (27:01):
The textor said, well, then he would have told him
go away, and I said, yeah, then people like you
would have been ripping him for saying how he was
rude to the media.
Speaker 3 (27:08):
He's not going to be like that. He's not going
to do that.
Speaker 1 (27:11):
And then the guy again Arts doesn't have a media team. No,
it's called Texas Football. They do it. But go back
and look at it. If you don't believe me, there's
not a single tweet from Texas Football about him being
out at Dell's. At Dell Children's, did they know he
was going to be there, probably, and he probably told him,
you don't need to tweet that out.
Speaker 3 (27:33):
He went there on his own. He did that on
his own.
Speaker 1 (27:36):
Now, the hospital let local media know when some showed up,
but they invited them. That's what I'm telling you. Quit
trying to paint him as a bad guy because he
fletched a little bit at a player when he's doing
stuff like this on an off day that it doesn't
need to That's all I'm saying.
Speaker 3 (27:53):
I don't understand why this is so hard for you,
unless I mean I get it. I get it.
Speaker 1 (27:57):
If if you're not a long worn and don't like it,
I completely get it. I understand it's all right. But
just all I'm saying is use a little common sense
on this. He didn't he doesn't have a media team,
he didn't send out a release, and he was going
to be there. He just showed up and was giving
away backpacks and iPads to cancer kids with cancer. I
(28:19):
think that's a pretty nice thing. I think it is
altruistic and if the hospital happened to notify media and
they showed up and then asked him and he said,
you know, I might have felt sorry for myself a
couple of weeks ago, and he said, but this is
what's real.
Speaker 3 (28:33):
This is how it really is.
Speaker 1 (28:35):
He was being pretty plain about it, So that's all.
That's all I'm saying. He's not you know, and my gosh,
he flexed a little bit on the sideline. Maybe he
should have been penalized for. But my point is is
that there's a lot more that's good and decent about
this guy than a flex to h And by the way,
(28:57):
about that flex, as somebody else pointed out, he said,
did you see the sam player tried to pinch him
in the junk when he crossed the goal line? Watch
it in slow motion. That didn't get brought up either,
But you're not gonna make a big deal out of it.
He did do what he said, and he even said afterwards, yeah,
I probably shouldn't have. My mom got on me a
(29:17):
little bit about that. So yeah, his mom and dad
probably did raise him better than that. But doesn't mean
we don't all slip a little bit and have a
little bit of a flex moment. That's all I'm saying.
Given a little grace on that, my goodness, especially when
he's doing some good deeds.
Speaker 3 (29:33):
In the in the offing.
Speaker 1 (29:35):
Speaking of good deeds, here's living proof that Cameron Parker
has not left iHeart. As people were asking last week,
he's here. He's back from a wedding not his own,
that he attended. How many how many weddings this calendar
year have you been to?
Speaker 7 (29:51):
Now I'm losing count? I know I have three straight
beginning last weekend. Number two is this weekend. Have a
third one next weekend. And thankful I think ABC was
aware the wedding and they're like, let's let's put Texas
Florida at two thirty so Cameron can make this wedding.
Speaker 3 (30:06):
What time is the wedding there in Florida.
Speaker 7 (30:09):
No, the Florida Texas game is at two three. The
wedding is in Dripping Springs. Oh, okay, okay, all right,
so you'll be able to make it. Yeah, it's an
evening event. Get five six pms. Okay, okay, so you'll
be a bit Oh that's good.
Speaker 1 (30:20):
Are you? Are you like a groomsman or an USh
or anything in the wedding? No, fortunately not Fortunately, I'm
just showing up now. This is the weekend the wedding.
Speaker 7 (30:27):
This weekend, I was actually asked to and maybe this
is uh, this is symbolic, but I was asked to
find two selections of craft.
Speaker 3 (30:38):
Beer localized to Austin.
Speaker 7 (30:40):
It's like, oh, this is cool, and it's like, wait
a second, maybe they think I drink too much here,
so different conversation, like you have you have knowledge's just
the biggest alcoholic at this wedding.
Speaker 3 (30:49):
Cameron's here. So I'm looking forward to dad, maybe do.
Speaker 7 (30:52):
Some taste testing this week, finding a good hazy IPA
for the wedding and something like but nope, not a
grooms vent. But my mom is coming into town. Last
time she was in Austin was for my graduation, so
it's been about five years. So for that really really excited.
Speaker 3 (31:07):
That's that's very good.
Speaker 1 (31:10):
And your mom being in town will help take your
mind off your favorite pro football team. I wanted you
just step in here because I did it last week
since the Cowboys won and said, hey, we've got to
be fair here now when you've been bagging on them
and they win. Well, what's also fair is to give
you a chance to sound off when they lose and
are largely outplayed. Yesterday and lost by seventeen points to
(31:31):
the Chicago Bears.
Speaker 3 (31:33):
It was ugly.
Speaker 7 (31:33):
There was a fantastic tweet. I forget who wrote it,
but it was see Matt Aberfluis did help develop Kill
Williams just as if it's a coordinator for Dallas Cowboys.
We talked about it after the Giants win and Greg
I said, this team is bad, this defense is bad.
And boy, I tell you what, this tape will make
(31:54):
a lot of the KILEB Williams truthers feel pretty good
about themselves because they'll be They'll be playing that flea
flick or highlight pass for the rest of the season
to have believe that Kill Williams is the guy, and
I hope he does.
Speaker 3 (32:05):
He looked great yesterday.
Speaker 7 (32:07):
But of course I think I could have been quarterback
for Chicago and I would have thrown a touchdown pass.
Speaker 3 (32:10):
Because the cow Boys defense is terrible, uh ei.
Speaker 7 (32:14):
Their third worst in terms of yards allowed per game,
giving up almost a thousand yards passing so far through
just three games played.
Speaker 3 (32:23):
Over there that I am.
Speaker 1 (32:24):
I started their defense on my fantasy team, Craig, because
I thought the Eagles would give up more points to
the Rams, and it was true all the way till
near the end of the block field.
Speaker 3 (32:34):
Goal and the return there George Davis pluck.
Speaker 4 (32:37):
Yeah yeah, starting Cowboys defense is like a tanking violation.
Speaker 3 (32:40):
Yeah. Yeah, so he could have been that Ceedee Lamb.
That's a tough deal. Three four weeks.
Speaker 7 (32:46):
Well, we talked about it too, that this team is
so top heavy Craig with Ceedee Lamb and yeah, if
those guys are healthy. I mean, Javontai Williams looked pretty good.
I know you had the fumble, but you know, he's
I thought he was. He's been actually a pickup. But
you know, if you lose Dak or see d doesn't
take much for this offense to to come apart. And
we saw yesterday. I mean Dak had had no choice.
(33:06):
I mean Dak's completing passes to Ryan Flornoy. I think
Kevin Burkhardt probably had to ask the spotter and the booth,
who is this guy?
Speaker 3 (33:13):
Guy? Pull up the reserve charts.
Speaker 1 (33:17):
I have a reserve chart in addition to the UH
into the two and three and four d whatever at
certain positions.
Speaker 7 (33:23):
I have the reserve chart for that sort of thing.
It's the worst case scenario for the Cowboys. Yeah, this
season before the Michael Parsons trade was to not have
Ceedee Lamb or Michaeh Parsons available.
Speaker 3 (33:37):
Neither will be one will be playing for Green Bay.
Speaker 7 (33:39):
He'll be playing against the Cowboys on Sunday, uh and
then Ceedee Lamb out three to four weeks now.
Speaker 1 (33:45):
To be fair, Parsons didn't do much yesterday, and for
that matter, the Packers didn't do much yesterday and wound
up giving away that game to the Browns yesterday.
Speaker 3 (33:53):
And there's there's there's no small victories here, Greg, smaller alright.
Speaker 4 (33:58):
Chraign what I tell you, the the expectations of this
Cowboys fan base are unrealistic. I was out in East
Austin watching the game in a predominantly Cowboys jersey wearing
establishment yesterday, and the amount of people that were genuinely
shocked at that result was shocking to me. Losing by
(34:19):
double digits, losing the way they did Bears team, I
think I was a little bit surprised, Like if between
the Cowboys were gonna lose, I would have been like, okay,
But I feel like the Cowboys would have had a
chance to win a betitive the game.
Speaker 7 (34:32):
The game after Chicago won that that ten O was
scoring run that in the second quarter, it was like, oh,
this game's over now. Of course, losing Ceedee Lamb in
the first drive that probably contributed to the blowout loss.
But I think I'm a little shocked they lost in
that fashion. Losing thirty one to fourteen to a Bears
team that has not looked good the last two weeks
is a little bit shocking. But I think now the
(34:54):
fan base snows for the most part that without Ceedee
Lamb this next month, like, you know, Michael Irvans not
walking through that door. Uh Roy Williams, and he looked
pretty bad on the Miami sideline last time that Miami
Florida game. He didn't look like he's ready to let
me just say that, Hey, he's still passionate. He's still passionate.
You know his passion is okay. Arch Manning's not okay, right,
(35:16):
you know you can't be you can't be passionate.
Speaker 3 (35:19):
Can't we do that otherwise you need to be flagged.
Speaker 7 (35:21):
Yeah, but I was unfortunate seeing how your team lost,
because the Eagles just there, they are the cockroaches of
the NFL.
Speaker 3 (35:29):
They just every game you feel like they should to lose,
and they somehow.
Speaker 1 (35:32):
Well, I won't say the Rams handed it to them,
but they made several critical mistakes throughout the game in
the first half, and.
Speaker 3 (35:43):
Who's the analyst that works, which David greg Golson greg Olsen.
Speaker 1 (35:46):
Greg Olsen pointed out three occasions they settled for field goals.
They actually kicked four, but there were three where they
settled for field goals, uh, where they could have gone
forward on fourth and one or fourth and two, didn't.
Then in the second you have to go for it
on four down twice, don't get it and have two
field goals blocked. So they really put the Eagles in
(36:07):
position to win the game. Even at that point it's
twenty seven to twenty six, and here they are lining
up for a forty four yard field goal to win
it and it gets blocked and return, which, by the way,
if you're familiar with the concept of bad beats, that's
a real bad beat. The Eagles were three and a
half point favorites, and you were dead. You hadicket, You're dead,
(36:28):
you're dead.
Speaker 3 (36:29):
You're dead.
Speaker 1 (36:29):
There was some money line I think for Brown's Packers.
You'd have been dead for that, So there were there
were several of those. Always like watching Scott van peld
on Monday nights just so I can see all those
bad beats. The college ones are the crazy ones, but
that was a pretty crazy one there too for that.
So yeah, then I have to go from watching watching
the Dodger bullpen blow another lead and they lost.
Speaker 3 (36:51):
There, they're gonna win the West. They're up three with
three to play, but.
Speaker 7 (36:55):
Still, yeah, better than the other team in the American
League West, who has completely fallen apart by the Rangers.
They look like best team in the league, but when
they play anybody else, including cal Riley and the Big
Dumper and the Mariners, who, if you know, Seattle's kind
of had a treacherous a couple of decades. Yeah, now
it looks like they've kind of finally gotten over that
(37:16):
hump that is the Houston Astros to win the AL West. So,
you know, part of me, because the Rangers season now
officially over, it's hard to root for the Astros considering
our history and even of the Mariners at times, but
it is cool to see the Mariners finally kind of,
you know, get over the hump and possibly win the
AL West for what will be the first time in
how long probably two.
Speaker 1 (37:36):
Thousand and one when they won one hundred and sixteen games.
Randy Johnson, Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 4 (37:39):
My NAT's fandom has reached levels of being happy for
Victor Roeblace as one of the highlights of my season.
Speaker 3 (37:44):
There you go. Yeah, I'm very happy for now.
Speaker 1 (37:47):
I think that there was a big piece on them
in the Athletic today about this about the two teams
that are on the precipice of being holders of two
of the biggest collapses in baseball history.
Speaker 3 (38:04):
One is the Mets, who continue to slide.
Speaker 1 (38:06):
The Reds have caught them for the final wildcard, and
the Diamondbacks are only a game behind on that going
in to the final week of the season. There's that,
and Ken Rosenthal in that piece said that with their
three hundred and forty million dollars payroll, a lot of
fans would consider that the most epic of collapse when
they had the big lead in the wildcard. But there's
a bigger one that's coming, perhaps, and it's in the
(38:28):
American League Central. On July eighth, the Detroit Tigers led
the Cleveland Guardians by fifteen and a half games. In
case folks haven't noticed the lead who no one game.
It's down to one game, and if the Guardians had
won yesterday they'd be tied.
Speaker 3 (38:47):
They didn't. The Tigers have lost I think six in
a row.
Speaker 1 (38:51):
They play the Guardians in Cleveland this week and then
they finish I think at Boston. The Guardians play the Tigers,
and then they closed with the Rangers of the weekend
to close that. But it would be the biggest collapse
by one team to another team, the biggest lead by
one team over another team in a one hundred and
(39:14):
sixty two game schedule in baseball history if it happens,
so it's something worth following this week, just like the
American League West and the race for the wildcard, both
in the American League and Ashleague, because it's crazy in
the American League too. It's possible the Tigers could fall
all the way out of it. It's distinctly possible. The
(39:35):
Astros could. Astros and Rangers both could wind up missing
the playoffs. The Guardians could wind up winning the Central
being the Wildcard, with the Tigers either winning the Central
being the Wildcard. Then you got Red Sox Yankees and
Blue Jays in the East, although the Red Sox leader
of the other two is only one game.
Speaker 4 (39:53):
So it's going to be a very exciting week. When
you went for the wedding, did you play golf?
Speaker 3 (39:58):
I did? Where'd you play? Skybrook?
Speaker 6 (40:01):
Uh?
Speaker 7 (40:01):
Some of my private golf course just kind of in
be tucked in between Huntersville and Charlotte's.
Speaker 1 (40:06):
Okay, all right, because tomorrow I want you to come
back in here and let's talk Rider Cup. We've been
talking about for months, even before Jay Carmon was a
twinkle in our eye so to speak, before he showed up.
Speaker 3 (40:16):
I'm excited for course, so we need to we need
to get in the Ryder Cup. That's the best.
Speaker 7 (40:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (40:22):
And can you imagine what's gonna be like at Beth
Page Black with those New Yorkers there. Have you heard
how the Europeans are preparing for it.
Speaker 7 (40:30):
Some of they're having some of their their team members playing.
Speaker 1 (40:34):
Crowd music, crowd noise on the golf course. It's like
start preparing to go to the horseshoe.
Speaker 7 (40:38):
They're they're in the golf stimulator and they're putting VR
headsets over their heads and pumping in audio of heckling
fans there.
Speaker 3 (40:48):
Now you're ready for New York.
Speaker 4 (40:49):
Shane Lowry's gonna love that.
Speaker 3 (40:51):
It's gonna be.
Speaker 7 (40:52):
It's gonna be a great weekend, and it's gonna be
even I'm looking forward the scene on on both sides, Craig,
because if the Americans go down early and now with
these players getting paid, the New York crowds are going
to let the Americans know about it too.
Speaker 3 (41:07):
You know those looks.
Speaker 1 (41:09):
Like they were getting on the Giants last night or
on the Mets. Yeah, they were losing the week very quickly.
Speaker 7 (41:14):
So it's you know, I the last five Ryder Cups
we'll talk about tomorrow have been decided by four five
points or more excuse me, so they haven't been relatively
that close.
Speaker 3 (41:23):
I think this year is going to be a lot closer.
I have a feeling. All right.
Speaker 1 (41:26):
That's Cameron Parker. He is still very much alive and
well on a part of the iHeartRadio family here all right.
Up next, we're gonna hear more from Loalmorn's head coach,
Te Sarcisian, where we continue on thirteen under the Zone.
The great Ringo start we were talking about during the
break because this being the open date on the schedule
the way I normally do it is. I am in
(41:46):
town today and tomorrow Wednesday is the car Wash lecture day,
go up to my alma mater. I'm guest lecturing on
campus in North Texas and doing a couple of podcasts
with a couple of folks up there, a couple of
other races interviews, getting all that done in the Dallas
for with Metroplex, and then for the weekend on the
open date to celebrate last week's milestone birthday. I guess
(42:12):
you would call it. The Missus and I are flying
to Las Vegas to see the one and Only ring
Ghost Star. He's finishing up a residency at the Venetian.
He's eighty five years young and still rocking, and he
has that and he's got his great all star band,
so I do want to see him. Lynn and I
have since we've been together, and we've been together now
(42:37):
seven years and we've been married three years, and we
have kind of made it our own personal goal whenever
possible to try to see a lot of the classic
rock and yes, yacht rock oriented groups before they hang
it up. So included in that, and that's also includes
(42:57):
classic rock, not just yacht rock.
Speaker 3 (42:59):
We've seen together Bob Singer, Eric Clapton boss gags.
Speaker 1 (43:08):
Like I said, it kind of steps out of a
lot of that with herb Albert, but it's it's a
great show that we've seen twice at at the Paramount
uh Ambrosia.
Speaker 3 (43:20):
America. I like them. Oh, it's great. It's a great show.
Speaker 1 (43:24):
Last year I went racing right after the Colorado State
in the season open racing down U to the UH
the ac L. Moody Theater downtown. Uh So it's great.
A little river band we've seen uh So, we've been.
We've been to several of those and we try to
see as many as we can. Before we saw Steely
Dan both in Las Vegas at a residency and then
(43:45):
we saw himoting for the Eagles a couple of years
ago uh at Moody Center and so the Eagles saw
Doobie Brothers. So we've seen a lot of those, Tom Jones,
We've seen a lot of stars and bands from the
seventies and eighties and the nineties. So we enjoyed doing so.
It was kind of a birthday gift for me. So
we're going We're going out to Las Vegas this week
and to see that, and then I actually actually contemplated
(44:10):
briefly going from seeing the show Saturday night in Vegas
zipping down to LA and catch Rams Colts on Sunday.
You know, yeah, that's a bit much good matchup. I know,
I said, I got a work week ahead of me,
a conference road open, and you know what they're calling
Daniel Jones.
Speaker 3 (44:24):
Now, yeah right, no more Danny Dimes. What is it now?
Indiana Jones. Indiana Jones.
Speaker 1 (44:32):
He helped me yesterday. I had a sub for the
injured Jane Daniels on my football team. I think any
quarterback against the titan start this year.
Speaker 3 (44:41):
Yeah, so it helped.
Speaker 1 (44:43):
Hey, listen a little bit of Dayton just to close
out the back and forth I had, and always enjoy these.
I don't don't don't get me wrong, I don't mind
the debate with folks on the text line. And this
was a good debate we had about Arch banning. He
said good on Arch. He owned up to it and
by all accounts is a good guy. But because he's
Haarch and this is Texas, he got a good talking
to rather than a penalty. And that's a problem. I
(45:04):
don't disagree with you on that. I think the problem
with the tawning thing is it becomes a subjective deal
in the eyes and ears of the official who was
standing right there. Maybe he saw the guy from Sam
reach out and try to whatever, pinch you, junk or whatever.
Speaker 3 (45:22):
Maybe he saw that.
Speaker 1 (45:24):
Maybe Arch didn't say anything real profane or inflammatorium, mainly
did the stare down whatever it was. The official was
standing there deemed it enough just to warn him on that.
Maybe he did merit a flag. And I'm one of
those people like you that I'm not a I have
(45:44):
a low tolerance for that kind of thing. I think
that you know, you play the game, you play it clean,
you do that you don't you don't intentionally try to
injure somebody, you don't.
Speaker 6 (45:54):
You know.
Speaker 3 (45:55):
I'm not into the trash talking thing.
Speaker 1 (45:58):
So I'm I definitely don't agree with you on that
that maybe because of all of that, maybe maybe something
should have been different. Let me tell you one thing
that is different. Syracuse University Big Win may beat Clemson
on Saturday. They got fined not for fans rushing the field.
The game was at Clemson. They got fined twenty five
(46:18):
thousand dollars and publicly reprimanded, what for you ask faking injuries?
That's that new rule against faking injuries. In a statement
the ACC, it was the ACC who fined Syracuse that
said they violated the NCAA rule established this year aimed
at stopping teams from faking injuries to slow down play.
(46:40):
Nine to twenty five to go in the fourth quarter,
The ACC said the action the two players and the
coach quote were a clear attempt to gain an unmerited
advantage by stopping the game in order to secure an
injury timeout. Kate Klemnick, of course, the Westlake product, accused
Syracuse of faking injuries after the loss is a way
to slow down the tempo.
Speaker 3 (47:00):
He said.
Speaker 1 (47:00):
We were playing with tempo, and props to them. They
stopped us on some third downs and then they have
an injury or something like that when we really got going.
That's up to them if they want to be honest
about that. That was definitely tough for us to get
really get in a rhythm. We were playing fast, and
unfortunately they had get a guy get hurt or a
timeout or something like that. So the ACC office and
(47:21):
the National Coordinator Football officials reviewed the play and according
to the acc the national coordinator agreed that the action
violated the spirit of the injury timeout and fair play
and was done in a way to circumit the new
injury timeout rule to avoid the team being.
Speaker 3 (47:38):
Charged of timeout end quote.
Speaker 1 (47:40):
That new rule means that a team is charged of
time out if a player goes to the ground injured
after the ball was spotted. In this particular case, both
players went down before the ball was spotted. That's why
they weren't charged of the timeout. But the school's going
to have to write a check for twenty five thousand
dollars as a result of that.
Speaker 4 (47:57):
You're going to get little messy one offs and things
like that as you try and police this, you know,
fake injury problem, which I think everyone would agree was
and has been an issue in the sport for a
few years now. So these are growing pains from that,
and you know it's gonna require a little creativity, a
little nuance.
Speaker 1 (48:14):
Yep, I agree, I agree, So we'll see if it
if it does take root on that. All right, let's
hear some more from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkasian. He
was asked if last week and getting the win and
buy and large things being you know, really good all
(48:35):
the way through.
Speaker 3 (48:35):
Does that change the tone for him and his team
going into this open date.
Speaker 6 (48:40):
No, I just think that, like today, you know, there
was a lot of things that we did in the
game that we followed through with what we were trying
to emphasize, and that's a real positive.
Speaker 2 (48:52):
And I wanted our players to know that.
Speaker 6 (48:54):
I want him to see and feel what that looked
like on tape and even thinking back to Whatnesday, Thursday,
Friday leading up to the game, and there was a
couple of things that we didn't carry over and that
we needed we need to get we need to get right.
And you know, in a couple of penalties that that
were that were that were not up to standard to
me that we should we should be better at. There
(49:15):
was a couple of things execution wise, I think we
can be better at irregardless of who the opponent was.
It was about us and our ability to do things
that are going to be required of us as we
move forward. And so we'll continue to to to you know,
impress upon them the importance of those things, but also
like take a step to look at Okay, who are
(49:36):
we and what are we good at and how can
we accentuate those things that we're good at And here's
a few things that we know we're going to need
to be better at and and get those things you know,
better serving us moving forward to where we are a
complete team that that I think we're capable of being.
Speaker 1 (49:51):
Arch Sark was then asked about prepping for the advent
of SEC play and is does it require a different level,
a different mentality in terms of going into the conference,
especially on the road.
Speaker 6 (50:04):
The one thing our guys that we have in our
locker room right now, we have a bunch of guys
that love football and they like to watch football, and
so one of the easiest thing to do is turn
on the tape. And when you turn on the tape
and you watch overall schemes is one thing. But when
you watch the particular player that you're probably going to
be competing against, and you see the level of player
(50:27):
and the way they play to go with the scheme
and what they're asking them to do, it usually gets
our guys attention. Like I think back to last year,
I remember going to Vanderbilt and turn it on the
tape and it didn't take long to get our players'
attention like the pave is a really good player, and
was like, Okay, this guy is tough, he's he's competitive,
(50:50):
They've got a great scheme. The tight end was a weapon.
Like our guys, it was resonating with them quickly to
the outside world.
Speaker 2 (50:57):
Oh it was Vanderbilt. To our guys, our meeting rooms.
Speaker 6 (51:00):
It was like, these guys are really good and they're
going to be a challenging team to compete against because
of the way they use the strengths of their team.
And so I think that's the thing is that we
got to show them the tape, you know, because the
records a lot of times at our conference, somebody has
to win, if somebody has to lose every week, and
so you know, if there's sixteen games whatever, how many
(51:23):
of there are this weekend in the SEC is sixteen teams,
there's eight games, there's gonna be eight winners and eight losers.
And over time, you know, you start working your way
into November, not everybody's going to be you know, six
and zero.
Speaker 5 (51:34):
You know, they're don't be.
Speaker 6 (51:35):
A three and three or two and four team. That's
still a really good team. They just lost a couple
of heartbreakers there at the end of the game. That
doesn't mean they're not a good team. And so we
got to show them the tape to re emphasize that,
you know, the quality of opponents that were playing.
Speaker 1 (51:50):
One thing that Sart was asked about was about the
personality of his offense, which he said it was still
trying to emerge through these early weeks of the season.
So did he seem more to identify his team's offensive
personality that he wants to see?
Speaker 6 (52:05):
You know, I don't know if it's necessarily deja vus,
but I do think to your point, like, at some
point your personality starts to starts to to bubble to
the top.
Speaker 2 (52:17):
And and you know, as a.
Speaker 6 (52:20):
Coach, you want to make sure that what you think
the personality of one side of the ball or the
other resembles what you want your team to look like.
And and so if if early on, and whether it's
in the summer and training camp, you're like, uh, we
could have a tendency to go one direction or another,
you try to you try to reemphasize and reinforce what
we want to become, and celebrate when that does show
(52:44):
itself and maybe minimize maybe what we don't want and
then you try to get people that that are going
to be part of that personality to play to that personality.
And and so, like last week, I touched on the
importance of DeAndre Moore being back because he's part of
our personality. What he brings every day in practice, the confidence,
(53:07):
the energy, his willingness to hold people accountable, his willingness
to do the dirty work. You know, one of his
best plays, one of Ryan's best plays I celebrated with
the team today was them both blocking on a bubble
screen for Dayla McCutcheon. That's part of our personality. That's
the way we play. There's a level of physicality we
want to play. And I think a lot of times
(53:29):
people hear me say that I'm talking about the line
of scrimmage. It's all eleven. It's how we play on
the perimeter. And so I need to celebrate those things.
I need to celebrate those two guys running clear out
post routes for Jordan Washington to catch a touchdown out
the back door. You know, it's two high level players
that are playing selfless football for other guys to make
(53:49):
their plays. And so those that's part of the personality
as much as It is the excitement and energy that
maybe Arch provided too, But it's everybody for the next guy.
That's part of our personality, and so I have to
celebrate those things to reinforce it so that maybe those
other guys when they get in they understand why it's
(54:10):
so important to play that way.
Speaker 3 (54:12):
All right, there you are more from Sark. We'll hear
more from him coming up next hour.
Speaker 1 (54:16):
Op Next, the head coaches of the state's two NFL
teams discuss their defeats when we continue on thirteen under
the Zone on the tech sign oer Man Seatpal said,
CD's injury could have been much worse. It looked bad,
he said. I wish the rams would have made the
feel go. Yeah, me too, he said, And.
Speaker 3 (54:33):
This is true too.
Speaker 1 (54:34):
He said, Arte probably would have gotten flagg in the NFL.
Uh after Pooka Nakoua got his yesterday. That was crazy.
Uh did he flex, yes, toward an open end zone.
He wasn't even facing anybody, didn't tall on anybody, just
turned and flex and they flagged him for that.
Speaker 3 (54:51):
Yeah, that's a little much.
Speaker 4 (54:52):
It's a little much with the taunting crackdown going on
right now.
Speaker 3 (54:56):
And then Seatpal said I'm sorry, I just can't get
into protein golf. What's a cup now?
Speaker 1 (55:00):
Long run golf? Yes hoo, come hey, that has to
do with long words. Think about think about the fact
Scotty Scheffler, the lead dog on that rider coast to
the United States against Europe, and it's a big, big thing.
It'll be a Beth Page Black Alan Gilan, as they
like to say out there in New York.
Speaker 4 (55:16):
Ider jar guys, c pat just give it a shot,
get wrapped up in the atmosphere.
Speaker 1 (55:20):
Yeah, that's pretty cool. Well, it's got a little real
Usa Usa vibe to it, I would say. Off of that,
all right, let's let's hear from Brian Schottenheimer. First, the
Cowboys head coach asked about what kind of postgame message
could he have first team after such a desultory result
losing thirty one to fourteen to the Bears.
Speaker 8 (55:40):
Well, I thought, you know, the bigger thing for us was,
you know, we were running the ball really well early
in the game, and you know, the score kind of
got away from us a little bit, you know, you know,
come out of halftime, we're only down ten and we
get start of a drive, and I think that was
the bigger issue. You know, certainly you lose a player
like ceed, it affects you. But again, you know, we
(56:02):
just didn't play well. We really didn't. And told the
guys that, you know, and this could be a humbling business.
If you don't take care of business, you don't play well,
then you're not gonna win. And what I pointed out
to the guys very clearly was, you know, we got
to stop giving up big plays on defense and we
got to stop turning the ball over on offense.
Speaker 5 (56:18):
I mean, it's a bad formula.
Speaker 8 (56:21):
But you know, we have played three out of seventeen,
did not play well tonight, certainly didn't play well enough
to win.
Speaker 3 (56:29):
Give them credit. They did a good job and they
were better than us tonight.
Speaker 4 (56:32):
Yeah, no doubt about that about those big plays.
Speaker 3 (56:35):
His team gave up.
Speaker 4 (56:36):
Same thing.
Speaker 8 (56:37):
You know, Dig slips down on the one me he
just stumbles. The flea flicker were right there, you know,
and it's like, you know, whatever, But we did have
a guy jumped up one time on a low route.
Let the guy get in behind him on something that
can't happen. So again, just can't happen. You know, there's
just too many big plays and we know that we
(56:59):
addressed it. You know, I don't shout I told.
Speaker 3 (57:01):
You guys this. I said, Hey, here's the deal.
Speaker 8 (57:02):
I don't just talk to you guys after a game
and just throw a bunch of coach speak at you.
Speaker 2 (57:05):
I'm gonna be honest with him.
Speaker 8 (57:06):
And uh and I was. I mean, I told him
like I just said, I said, hey, we got to
stop giving up big plays, explosives, and we gotta protect
the football. All right, let's get some injury updates. First
on Digs and Clark. Diggs I think is okay. I
had to come in and get some X rays, but
I think he's okay. Came back in the game. Clark's
got a little bit of an ankle, and again I
think he's gonna be okay. A little bit more tests
(57:28):
to be done, but again he's tough. And you know,
we got beat up a little bit today. That's all
part of it. But hopefully we'll get these guys back
healthy and be able.
Speaker 1 (57:37):
Well, the one guy that's not going to be back
healthy anytime soon, a seedee Lamb just got to have.
Speaker 3 (57:42):
More tests done.
Speaker 8 (57:42):
But yeah, he wanted to try to come back in
and play and thought he could but it just kind
of you know, these those are the type of injuries
they kind of get sore.
Speaker 1 (57:50):
All right, there's something from Ryan Schotenhaimer. We'll hear more
from him next hour now, Demko. Ryan's on the Texans
losing a tough, tough game with Jacksonville yesterday.
Speaker 4 (57:59):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (58:00):
Us, we just we just got to find a way
to play cleaning football right today. When you have the
penalties that we had to kind of knock us back
a lot offensively, defensively, penalty in the end zone, you
turn the ball over three times.
Speaker 5 (58:14):
That's man, that's tough to win in this league.
Speaker 9 (58:16):
It's tough enough to win, but when you put yourself
in position where you're helping the opponent like, that's just
not a good recipe for winning football. So so we
we clean up the things we can clean up right,
then we'll and we play winning football. Then we'll have
a chance to turn it around. But again, man, we're close,
that's what it is. We're close. But close isn't good enough.
So we got to pick it up and find a
(58:38):
way to get a win.
Speaker 3 (58:38):
How about the turnovers? Did they really make a difference here?
Speaker 4 (58:42):
Yeah?
Speaker 9 (58:42):
For sure, We're going down to score and we get
the ball out one of our best players, Nico, trust
him with the football, right, he knows it. I know
he hates it more than anyone else to have the ball,
you know, taking away from him there.
Speaker 5 (58:55):
So that was tough.
Speaker 9 (58:56):
We felt the momentum shift there when we hit the
big touchdown and we're driving down and we're in position
to drive and score again and you give the ball
away right in the plus territory in the red zone.
Speaker 5 (59:08):
That's hard.
Speaker 1 (59:10):
How about is our offense they've they've really been stemmied
so far. Can they get it turned around?
Speaker 5 (59:15):
Yeah?
Speaker 9 (59:15):
For us offensively, we were trying to just make sure
we sustain positive drives.
Speaker 5 (59:19):
That's the thing, right.
Speaker 9 (59:20):
We've had games the previous games where we've gone backwards,
whether that be penalty or you know, not operating with
enough urgency.
Speaker 5 (59:28):
But today I thought we were clean with the operation.
Speaker 9 (59:31):
We just didn't make enough plays, right, but you didn't
make enough plays and then we have penalties that kind
of put us back in second.
Speaker 5 (59:37):
And long, third and long. We have to get past that.
Speaker 9 (59:40):
As soon as we get past that, then we can see,
you know, how good of offense we could be.
Speaker 1 (59:44):
All right, we'll hear more as well. Next hour from
Demico Ryans College football notes. All right, I don't know
if you saw ited with Friday night, Oaklhoma State lost
at home to Tulsa, first time they've lost home to
them since nineteen fifty one at home. Now, as Jake
(01:00:08):
pointed out early on, they've got this streak of eleven
consecutive defeats against FBS opponents.
Speaker 4 (01:00:16):
Oh sorry, I gave him three more losses earlier than
they have. Still a rough streak, though, yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:00:21):
It is, and it is the longest such streak among
powerful programs nationally. And they've dropped eleven of their last
twelve games overall. The only win was over UT Martin,
an FCS program that got whacked the other on Saturday
by Missouri State, who was a transitional FBS program. So
they've dropped eleven of their last twelve games dating to
(01:00:44):
the start of the twenty twenty four season. There's I
think the number is something like they've been outscored like
one fifteen to forty one, dating back to that fifty
two to nothing lost to Colorader to close out last
year when he went three to nine.
Speaker 4 (01:01:00):
And everybody was scoring on Colorado at the end of
last year.
Speaker 3 (01:01:04):
Hey, then they put up a goose egg. Yeah. So
Gundhi had his news conference today.
Speaker 1 (01:01:10):
And he feeling among questions about why his team is bad,
they're winning three and why they're not good, also about
his own job security.
Speaker 3 (01:01:18):
He said there were fair questions.
Speaker 1 (01:01:19):
Normally he bristles at such things, but he did say
he completely intends to remain at Oklahoma State beyond the season.
One hundred percent was his comment. He praised the home
crowd of forty and forty two of their support. He
emphasized his commitment to improving his team moving forward. And so,
(01:01:42):
as I mentioned, today is the seventeen not eighteen seventeenth
anniversary of the infamous I'm a man, I'm forty rant.
It was two thousand and eight when that happened. But
he kind of reiterated that sentiment ahead of this game.
They've got Baylor coming in this Saturday. He said, here's
this quote, I'm under con tract. I hear. I'm under
contract here for I think three and a half years
(01:02:05):
when I was hired here to take this job. Ever
since that day, I've put my heart and soul into
this and I will continue to do that until at
some point if I say I don't want to do it,
or if somebody else says we don't want you to
do it. They added more than sixty new players prior
to last year's start, following the three and nine finish
and oh to nine run through conference play a year ago.
(01:02:26):
And so two weeks after being beaten by Oregon sixty
nine to three, they gave up eleven plays of fifteen
plus yards, they made just three trips to the end zone,
and they were out gained four hundred and twenty four
yards of total offense to four hundred and three against
Tulsa only six days after the Golden Hurricane lost.
Speaker 3 (01:02:45):
By nineteen to Navy. So yeah, he believes the mistakes
are all fixable.
Speaker 4 (01:02:51):
Hang on a Hurricane lost to Navy.
Speaker 3 (01:02:53):
How about that? So anyway, that's you know, his position.
Speaker 1 (01:03:02):
Obviously, his job status thing has been bubbling, but there
are other questions that have hovered around the athletic director
Chad Wyberg. He's also been working without a contract since June.
So if you're wondering why they don't already pull the
trigger on this thing. If they fire him without cause
before this season's over, Oklahoma State has to scratch him
(01:03:23):
a check for fifteen million dollars, So that's probably why
it's pretty safe to say they cannot afford to fire.
Speaker 3 (01:03:31):
Him right now.
Speaker 1 (01:03:34):
He said, I'll get people with text messages saying, man,
you've done this all this time.
Speaker 3 (01:03:39):
You don't need this, you don't need that. What are
you doing? Why are you doing this?
Speaker 1 (01:03:42):
He said, It's still fun for me. So we'll see
if the fund continues. With Baylor coming in off of
their difficult loss of walk off lost Arizona State on
Saturday night. Yeah, his text line might look a little
bit like ours today.
Speaker 3 (01:03:54):
Yeah, there you go. All right, We'll be back to
wrap up hour number two. I'm thirteen under the Zone.
Speaker 1 (01:03:58):
As Texas defeated Sam Houston fifty five to nothing, and
now I get ready for sec play. After an open
date on the schedule this week, were welcoming back to
the program here on Sports Radio AM thirteen Under the Zone,
Greg Way, alongside the producer Jay Carmon, Glad to have
you with us here on this Monday, This Longhorns Monday.
(01:04:19):
We'll hear from long Horn's head coach Steve Sarkisian coming
up at the next segment, his thoughts on the victory
and what's to come. That was from the news conference
that that we brought to you live this morning at
eleven thirty here on the Zone. So we'll hear from
coach Sart coming up here in just a few moments.
(01:04:42):
You know, I was looking at the college football playoff
rules and regulations and all that stuff, and I was
I was looking up the data when the first releases
and then all is happened upon this story that came
(01:05:03):
out today that that was Kyle Bonnegera and Mark Slayball.
Do they update like the bowl projections starting even at
the start of the year. And I hadn't really even
noticed him after the first week, but here it is.
They've got bowl projections after this past weekend. So here's
(01:05:25):
what they have. They have started off with a college
football playoff, and here are the matchups they have. They
have South Florida in as the winner of the projected
winner of the American Conference. There are people up in Denton,
Texas going, hey, hey, wait a minute, we get him
at home the night before Texas OU. South Florida will
(01:05:46):
be there in Denton. Also, memphisis unbeaten, by the way,
and they just defeated Arkansas.
Speaker 3 (01:05:52):
Yeah, how about that.
Speaker 4 (01:05:53):
Arkansas had a chance to line up for a short,
potential game winning field goal.
Speaker 3 (01:06:00):
They had to do was control the football.
Speaker 4 (01:06:01):
Yep, make Memphis burn their time outs, and instead an
Arkansas fumble cost.
Speaker 3 (01:06:07):
Them the game.
Speaker 1 (01:06:08):
Yeah they did, so Memphis got the win. They're unbeaten
or Texas is unbeaten. South Florida of course has the
loss to Miami, but otherwise it's looked good and has
the winner for Florida. But they're projected by Bonnigera and
shlay Ball both as being the highest rated G five
(01:06:29):
or G six program, if you want to say, and
both of them have South Florida as a twelve seed
playing at the five seed. Bonagura has him playing LSU
in that first round. Slay Ball has him playing at
Oregon as the five. Then in the six versus eleven matchup,
(01:06:49):
Bonagura has Miami the sixth seed hosting eleven seed Texas Tech,
the projected winner of the Big twelve. Shlay Ball has
Penn State slotted as the sixth seed to host Indiana.
He had all Big ten matchup there in that first round.
(01:07:11):
Maybe they should play during the season. What a concept? Yeah,
the seven seed Florida State. In both Bonagora and slay
Ball's projection, this is where they differ. Bonegora has Florida
State playing Texas, Slayball has him playing Texas A and
M M. And then in the eight nine matchup, Bonagora
(01:07:35):
has Indiana the eight s he playing the nine seed Oklahoma.
He's projecting clearly the Sooners to win the Big twelve,
as is shlay Ball, who has Oklahoma and Tech in
an eight nine matchup. Be interesting that happens that way.
Speaker 4 (01:07:48):
Yeah, how about that three pretty local, pretty intertwined programs
all towards that back half of the top ten, right now. Yeah,
you got Oklahoma at seven, Texas A and M at nine,
Texas at ten, and then even throw Texas Tech in
there at twelve.
Speaker 1 (01:08:04):
Yeah, yeah, exactly. So it'll be interesting to see if
it all rolls out that way. So, then, based on
the winners of those games, here's what they're projecting for
the quarterfinals. Bontegora is picking Florida State to beat Texas
and then face the number two seed Oregon in the
Cotton Bowl. Shlay Ball says the Cotton Bowl matchup will
(01:08:26):
be five seed Oregon against four seed LSU, so they
differ on even how the bracketing is going to go
on that Then in the Orange Bowl, Bontagura has the
five seed LSU against the four seed Penn State. Shlay
Ball is the seven seed Florida State against the two
seed Miami hosting in the Orange Bowl. But like I said,
(01:08:46):
only Bontigora has Texas in the playoff and has him
getting beaten the first round in Tallahassee.
Speaker 3 (01:08:52):
It's good. Put that up on the bulletin board.
Speaker 5 (01:08:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:08:55):
And then and then slay Ball has Florida State beating
Texas A and M in the first round and then
playing Miami in the Orange Bowl and then.
Speaker 3 (01:09:02):
The Rose Bowl.
Speaker 1 (01:09:04):
They have Oklahoma has the nine seed against the one
seed Ohio State. They've got Oklahoma winning. Bonagura has Oklahoma
winning that nine versus eight match up at Indiana, winning
on the road at Indiana and the and slay Ball
has the nine seed being Texas Tech beating Oklahoma and
(01:09:27):
playing the one seed Ohio State winners advancing oh the
other quarterfinal. Bonnagura has the six seed Miami against the
three seed Georgia projected to be the winner of the SEC.
And shlay Ball has six seed Penn State against Georgia.
Speaker 4 (01:09:45):
So that tells me nobody right now in that group
is all that sold on.
Speaker 1 (01:09:52):
LSU had him in there, I had him in there,
and then Bonnagura has him in the semifinals.
Speaker 4 (01:09:58):
Oh okay, no, no, there they're in on LSU. But
they but they're leaving out Ole Miss Let's see, they're
leaving out Iowa State undefeated teams at the moment right
right exactly, and they're leaving out Georgia Tech.
Speaker 1 (01:10:14):
That's correct. That's correct because they're picking Miami to be
one bid out of the ACC is it with the
Big twelve in the Big ten controlling the other At
largest semifinals, Bonagara is the five seed LSU against the
one seed Ohio State. Shlay Ball this would be in
the Fiesta Bowl has the two seed Miami against the
three seed Georgia. The other semi final the Peach Bowl,
(01:10:36):
Bonnagara has the two seed organ against the three seat Georgia.
Shlay Ball is the one seed Ohio State against the
five seed Oregon and advancing to the finals at hard
Rock Stadium for the National Championship. Bonnagura has the two
seed Oregon against the one seed Ohio State. Shlay ball
has the two seed Miami against the one seed Ohio State.
They both have one number one versus number two. They
(01:10:57):
just differ on who's number two. So that's that's where
that's in case you're wondering about the rest of the
bowl schedule. Uh, this was the the Cricket Celebration Bowl.
Bonagura has Alabama stading in South Carolina State. Slayball has
Jackson Stated against South Carolina State.
Speaker 5 (01:11:16):
The LA Bowl.
Speaker 1 (01:11:18):
Bontagara has cal against UNLV. Slaybaw's Washington against UNLV. The
is four S Salute to Veterans Bowl in Montgomery. Bonegara
South Alabama against Miami. Slay ball is Western Kentucky against
Georgia Southern A.
Speaker 4 (01:11:32):
It's Miami of Ohio, right.
Speaker 3 (01:11:35):
I'm sorry, Miami of Ohio.
Speaker 1 (01:11:36):
H yeah, that is correct. I was like, whoa, Miami University.
That's is the s We're out on Carson then yeah, yeah, yeah,
right exactly. Uh, Staff d NA Cure Bowl that's in Orlando.
Speaker 6 (01:11:48):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (01:11:50):
The Bonnagara has Buffalo against Cincinnati. Slay Ball is Northern
Illinois against Troy the sixty eight Ventures Bowl and Mobile
Bonegora has Southern Michigan's Middle Tennessee slay Ball as Old
dominicanst Central Michigan Myrtle Beach Bowl. Both guys have East
Carolina in Bonegura has him against Marshall slave Ball against
James Madison. The Union Home Mortgage Gasparilla Bowl. Bonnagaras Mississippi
(01:12:13):
State against NCA State. Schley Ball has South Carolina against
Virginia Famous Sidaho Potato Bowl. Both have Ohio in it.
Bonnagura has the Bobcats playing Fresno State. Slay Ball has
Ohio U against Utah State. Boca Ratone Bowl, Yukon against Northland, Illinois.

blown up in a few weeks when we.
Speaker 3 (01:17:27):
That's right, that's right.
Speaker 1 (01:17:28):
Kyle Boneguerre has Texas in the playoff, Mark slay Ball
does not as of today, September the twenty second All right,
coming up, we'll hear more from coach Sark when we
continue on thirteen. Out of the Zone once again, the
producer Jake Herman hit me with some Ringo star coming
out of the break. This is actually off the Beatles'
White album, but it was a song that Ringo had
(01:17:49):
rolling around in his head for years, dating back even
in the early sixties, and kind of put the words
together and then with George Martin's at production expertise and
everything and put it all together on the White Album,
which is really it's a double album that has some
great tunes on it's got a mishmash, so it's got
a collection of a lot of other stuff too.
Speaker 4 (01:18:08):
And you know what the conspiracy theorists say about this song,
that it's about Paul McCartney.
Speaker 1 (01:18:14):
Yeah, well they had There was a lot of rift
going on during the production of the White Album.
Speaker 3 (01:18:19):
In fact, Ringo walked out of the sessions for a
while and came back in.
Speaker 4 (01:18:23):
So yeah, and it's about Paul McCartney not coming home
on the night that he allegedly passed away.
Speaker 1 (01:18:29):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, right, right exactly. So the pole is
dead theory that went around for a while. Hey, on
the text line, somebody said, I went to the Gordon
game Friday. It was impressive my high school team win
a Vista got beat by six man marathon in nineteen
seventy six.
Speaker 4 (01:18:46):
The reads aren't brothers, You are right. I don't know
why I said that. I've done the state championship last
two years.
Speaker 1 (01:18:50):
I know that they are not brothers ry Reid and Strikery,
but good players, no doubt, he said. My high school
eleven man team win a Vistaut Imperial, which is out
in far West Texas, got beat by six man Marathon
in nineteen seventy six. That was during the period when
Marathon went through. I went to five consecutive state championship
(01:19:10):
games and won two of them at six man and
went to five straight. At one point somebody else saying, oh,
Seat Palace and Gordon must have good coaches. They do,
Micreed really good coach there. And then somebody else it
was a bad play to run a toss suite with
Ceedee Lamb when he was hurt.
Speaker 3 (01:19:30):
Why that's hindsight the twenty Yeah, but.
Speaker 1 (01:19:35):
There were some people that the guy who works with
me on the high school games does a lot of
the Dallas Cowboys pre gave it postgame TV stuff. Isaiah
stand back. He was saying a week before, don't have
Ceedee Lamb run the ball, throw them the ball. Don't
have him run the ball. Bad things could happen. He
actually said that like a week ago. Oh, so okay,
(01:19:57):
that was foresight there. Yeah, he said that, don't have
him run.
Speaker 4 (01:20:01):
The ball, and don't don't think any DJ more or
tailback sets are coming anything right, right exactly.
Speaker 1 (01:20:07):
Let's hear some more from Loggorn's head coach Steve Sarkisian
in talking about the open date, coming off the wind
and going through an open date of practice, he was
asked about the way he views the running back room
right now, and you know, Trey Wisner do to come back,
(01:20:29):
hoping for him to come back, and hopefully c J.
Baxter back soon, and of course the other three young
guys as well. His vision on that running back room.
Speaker 2 (01:20:36):
I think that that's what this week is for.
Speaker 6 (01:20:38):
You know, we really got to start to assess, you know,
as Trey and C four start finding their way back,
and now we've got five of these guys that have
carried the ball and we know can carry the ball,
and you start to look at their strengths and you know,
areas of maybe where we think they can improve and
need to improve, and then how do you balance that out?
Speaker 2 (01:20:57):
What does that look like? That that's what a week
like this is for.
Speaker 6 (01:21:02):
And and then how do we compliment that, you know,
do we use you know, multiple running backs on the
same play. Do we you know, we've done that in
the past, we haven't done We've done very little of
that this year, and so you know, you're you evolve
as the season goes on, and then you try to
look at, Okay, what are we doing well, and how
can we do it better? And what maybe can we
do well And this is a week to to, you know,
(01:21:24):
try some of those things to see what they look like.
And then sometimes a week like this is where, you know, what,
we need to scrap this aspect of our offense or defense.
It's not as good as we thought it was going
to be. It didn't play out the way we wanted.
And that's okay too. We just have to be honest
with ourselves and be honest with the players so that
they know their role and what to expect, what we
expect of them moving forward.
Speaker 1 (01:21:43):
Sark was then asked about the changes with the portal
that was the legislation thing that was passed last week.
We talked about it on the show the other night
about it going now to one portal window starting coming
off the quarterfinals of the college football playoff from January
second to around the eleventh or twelveth yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:22:02):
Man, it definitely changes the dynamic of.
Speaker 6 (01:22:07):
One your own roster because you have players potentially that
could leave your team, and two where you think we're
deficient right and where we think we need to bring
players in to help voids on our roster. I think
what makes it the most challenging is sometimes you don't
(01:22:28):
know who might be leaving your roster, who might declare
early for the NFL draft, who might decide, you know what,
I'm going to go to another school and you could
have three players at one position in three days decide
to go. And in your mind in November December, as
you're starting to plan for this January portal, you're thinking, hey,
(01:22:51):
you know what, we don't need a running back in
the portal, And within three.
Speaker 2 (01:22:56):
Days three guys could go.
Speaker 6 (01:22:57):
And now all of a sudden, you're scrambling in early
January because three guys left, and now you've got to
go into the portal. And and that's the one window
that you have. And so I do think our planning,
we need to do a great job of planning. We
need to we need to make sure that that we're
evaluating the portal, you know, you know, very diligently as
(01:23:19):
well as having real conversations with the players on our roster,
because you never want to be reactionary. You want to
be ahead of things as best you can, because these
guys are going to go in and they're all gonna
want to go to that next school because they're gonna
want to be there for springball. And so with the
window being tight, hopefully we're still playing that and hopefully
it's even harder than we want it to be. That's
(01:23:39):
a good thing that we're that we're that if we
can be playing at that juncture of the season. But
I do think our planning and and our personnel department
is going to have to do a great jobs as
it comes to the portal.
Speaker 1 (01:23:49):
One more from start we're this hour. We was asked
about h and was our friend and college Roger Wallas.
We asked him about watching football, but as he mentioned,
he was going to watch some on the open date
and this weekend. So Roger kind of mapped it out
and a lot of us, I think you can draw
this vision of if you're looking at you know, the
(01:24:12):
four the quad boxes, the four screens on that. A
lot of people do that with YouTube TV or if
you're just watching the one if you have multiple monitors up.
Speaker 6 (01:24:24):
So he was asked, how does he like to watch
football this weekend. I'll probably watch College Game Day. You know,
I'm an early riser, so I'll probably watch that. I
think that's fun. That's great for college football. I even
know where it is this week. I'm sure it's somewhere great.
And then I don't know the time slots of the
games yet, but I'll know, like, Hey, I'm gonna watch
Alabama Georgia.
Speaker 2 (01:24:44):
It's gonna be a great game.
Speaker 1 (01:24:45):
You know.
Speaker 6 (01:24:46):
I want to see that game. I think it's this week.
I don't know I'm seeing all that. I think Ohio State.
I mean, I think Oregon's at Penn State. I think
that's obviously a great game for college football. You know,
I'll probably watch Mississippi State. I think that's this weekend.
Knowing Mississippi State's down the road, I think Florida has
a buy so it's not like I can watch them,
(01:25:06):
So you just start watching the games. I think LSU
is that old miss this week, if I'm not mistaken,
or maybe that's next week.
Speaker 2 (01:25:12):
I don't know, but there's just great games.
Speaker 6 (01:25:14):
And I have colleagues in the profession that I know
I'm gonna want to watch, and because they're friends of mine,
that that I want to watch those guys play. But
other times it's just great games that are being played,
and honestly, I'll probably watch it until the wee hours
of the night.
Speaker 2 (01:25:29):
I'll be honest with you. I watched the end of
the USC Michigan State game last weekend. Some of you
probably didn't. I don't know, but I did. You know,
It's just that's what I do. It's what I get
to do, what I love. I love what I do.
Speaker 6 (01:25:41):
I'm a fan of our sport first, and so I'll
watch as many as I can. You know, I struggle
with the four box. I'll be honest with everybody. I
struggle with that.
Speaker 2 (01:25:51):
I got my add kicks in. I'm all over the place.
Speaker 6 (01:25:54):
I kind of need to put one channel on and
then I'm the classic guy that I hit previous channel.
I go back and forth, and if you're in the
room with me, I'd probably piss you off because I'm
jumping around from game to game. It's just sometimes I
have my iPad, that TV and maybe a TV outside
with things going on, but the four box thing jams
me up.
Speaker 2 (01:26:13):
I struggle with that one.
Speaker 1 (01:26:14):
He describes exactly what I do to a t I'll
have one game up on the big screen and then
I'll have like maybe an iPad sometimes eat an iPad
and laptop up and I'll flip back and forth.
Speaker 3 (01:26:27):
But I don't do quad box thing.
Speaker 1 (01:26:29):
You know, it is kind of funny on red Zone
when Scott Hansen goes to the octo box, you know
he's got to eat up there.
Speaker 4 (01:26:35):
The problem is Red Zone is in my quad box.
So when Scott Hnson goes to the octo box, I
can't see anything.
Speaker 3 (01:26:43):
Yeah, that's true. See, that's the biggest thing.
Speaker 1 (01:26:45):
I having to squint to look to see some of
the particulars in a quad box.
Speaker 4 (01:26:48):
But I enjoy the four box because, you know, if
I want to see the commanders but they get a
big lead like they did, this way, I can say, Okay,
I'm gonna put them over here so I can see
every snap. But I'm want the red zone audio.
Speaker 3 (01:27:02):
Right right, It's good point, good point, all right?
Speaker 1 (01:27:05):
Coming up more from the NFL head coaches speaking of
red zone when we continue on thirteen under the zone
or I'm trying to figure out your significance of bouncing
back with Simon.
Speaker 3 (01:27:15):
And Garfunkles the boxer, our quart box. Oh the fucked
up day.
Speaker 4 (01:27:21):
That's that's me on Sundays.
Speaker 3 (01:27:23):
Okay, I got you out.
Speaker 4 (01:27:24):
It's a stretch. I know, I start say it's a
little bit of a reach, but it's all right. Now
we'll getting to the end of the program. Yeah, we
are here on the long runs.
Speaker 3 (01:27:30):
Money.
Speaker 1 (01:27:30):
Let's hear some more from the head coaches of the
Cowboys and Texans from Brian Schottenheimer still isn't really happy
with how his team is trying to go about its
communication on defense and how it's been a problem.
Speaker 8 (01:27:46):
Yeah, it wasn't And again that's coaching and that starts
with us, and we got to do a better job,
you know, simplify some things maybe. And again, the one
thing that we knew going into this game is they
would challenge us with some of their you know, motions
and shifts, and they did that. And uh, again I thought,
you know, Caleb played very very well, threw the ball
(01:28:06):
really well, made some plays off off point. But again,
gotta got to tighten the coverage down for sure. And
again we'll take a hard look at it. And maybe
it is to simplify things, and you know we're gonna
do what we do well. I can promise you that,
all right.
Speaker 1 (01:28:20):
So, uh, you know, if you're doing well on defense,
it means you're getting pressure on the quarterback. Would more
pressure have solved some of the defensive problems they had?
Speaker 8 (01:28:29):
I mean, I thought we got pressure on him, we
just couldn't finish it, you know, I mean, like we
just we were around him, so we just couldn't get
him on the ground, you know, And that's been something
that you know, he broke. And you know, he's an
athletic quarterback that has a chance to hurt you with
his arm and with his legs, and he did that.
And you know, I thought same thing. I thought we
forced some really third longs and they converted third and
(01:28:49):
lungs because you know, he moved off the spot and.
Speaker 3 (01:28:52):
Made us pay for it. So you know, uh got
to take a look at it, you know.
Speaker 8 (01:28:58):
Like I said, we're three games into the seventeen round
deal and got a good opponent coming in this week.
But it's it's it's what we get paid to do.
Make corrections and get these guys playing better and with
more confidence.
Speaker 1 (01:29:12):
Yeah, and then about this thing, about mobile quarterbacks where
they have had problems with him.
Speaker 3 (01:29:17):
How do you get home? How do you finish the
job there?
Speaker 8 (01:29:19):
I mean, it's staying in your rush lane. And again,
I'm gonna give Kleb a lot of credit, you know.
I saw him find rush lanes and step in up
and out on some things and stuff like that. But
you know, line games help because it kind of muddies
it up, you know, And that's a big part of it.
We do some line games. But you know, I just say,
at the end of the day, it goes hand in hand.
(01:29:41):
You know, the pressures and the quarterback pressure and the
coverage they go hand in hand. But when the quarterback
goes to break, he got a decision to make, and
you've got to make a decision. Do you want to
come up and then let him throw it behind you
or And that's the game you play.
Speaker 3 (01:29:53):
And he did a nice job. Give him credit. Yeah.
All right.
Speaker 4 (01:29:56):
So now.
Speaker 1 (01:30:00):
Here's this team one and two and are they beating down?
Did they get to moralize during the game. I wouldn't
say that. I think we didn't play well and we
didn't play well enough to win. And so that's why
we're sitting here with a loss and they converted their downs.
Speaker 3 (01:30:16):
We didn't.
Speaker 8 (01:30:16):
You know, they protected the ball, we didn't. They hit explosives,
we didn't. This game is one of the games that
you look at it and you're like, yeah, I mean
it's humbling. It sucks, but we didn't play very good
and got to play better to winning this league.
Speaker 1 (01:30:33):
Yeah, as simple as that. On that, all right, let's
hear from Dimiko Ryans with his team's I won three star.
He said to all of this trying to turn it around,
the poor stuff, getting it flipped, it all begins with coaching.
Speaker 9 (01:30:45):
Yeah, it all starts. First off, it starts with me.
All right, I got to clean it up. If we
continue to make penalties like silly penalty, it starts with me.
So I got to do a better job of coaching
understand so we can understand how to play it in
a right way and don't hurt ourselves.
Speaker 3 (01:31:00):
That's one thing.
Speaker 1 (01:31:01):
And then, uh, one thing that's really bothered the Texans
the first three weeks of the season penalties.
Speaker 9 (01:31:07):
Yeah, some of the penalties are it's not what we
coach to do. And again, penalties come from poor technique.
So it's not a matter of guys are trying to
make pillaris. But we just got to clean up with
how we're playing the technique the proper way. You play
the technique right, and you eliminate penalties.
Speaker 1 (01:31:22):
Okay, the new offensive coordinator, Nick Chaley's how does he
evaluate that.
Speaker 5 (01:31:28):
For our offense?
Speaker 6 (01:31:29):
Right?
Speaker 9 (01:31:29):
Overall, we're all in this thing together, right, We of
course we want to play better offensively, right, we just
gotta we all are sticking together.
Speaker 5 (01:31:37):
We got to find a way to make sure we
figure it.
Speaker 9 (01:31:41):
Out, and we will because I know we have the
right people, right, we got the right staff, we got
the right players. We just gotta figure it all out,
and we got to go show it. Yeah, me saying
that we just got to go show it and that's
when we'll see the improvement.
Speaker 1 (01:31:54):
Yeah, he believes in Nick Kaylee believes in in the
work that he's doing. And so the similar question student
about his team's mental and emotional situation. They're state they're
mental and emotional disposition right now? Are they discouraged to three?
Speaker 5 (01:32:14):
Yeah? I am not discouraged by my team.
Speaker 1 (01:32:16):
Right.
Speaker 5 (01:32:16):
We play with out standing effort today.
Speaker 9 (01:32:18):
We played with the result to give ourselves a chance
to come back and win the game, and again, it's
another fourth quarter drive, and that's the first three games.
Speaker 5 (01:32:27):
So am I discouraged. No, We've been in all three
ball games, right.
Speaker 9 (01:32:31):
We've had opportunities in the fourth quarter right, two times
offensively to go and in the game one time defensively,
and we didn't make those plays to win the game.
So our team is right there, despite how it looks,
how it feels.
Speaker 2 (01:32:44):
Do we want to be oh and three.
Speaker 9 (01:32:46):
No, we don't want to be oh and three right,
but we until we play cleaner ball and we find
a way to finish and get on the winning side
in the fourth quarter, that's when we'll get in the
win call.
Speaker 4 (01:32:57):
So as simple as that and trying to flip the
script earn it back around.
Speaker 2 (01:33:00):
All right.
Speaker 3 (01:33:01):
We'll be back to wrap up today's edition of the
program on thirteen under the Zone.
