Speaker 1 (00:01):
Happy Tuesday too, you Happy Texan Tuesday.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
As always, we pay tribute.

Speaker 1 (00:07):
We pay tribute to Texans every day of the week,
but certainly we pay tribute to Texans on an alliterative
Texan Tuesday. Get afternoon, everybody. Welcome to the program here
on Sports RADIOAM thirteen under the Zone. My name is
Craig White. Thanks so much for joining us. We're with
you each and every weekday afternoon, Monday through Friday from
two to five pm. We of course includes the producer

(00:28):
at Jake Herman. Did you watch you as some Monday
night football last night?

Speaker 3 (00:32):
I did, regretfully, I did.

Speaker 1 (00:34):
Yeah, Yeah, there was kind of stuff. Lenn and I
were watching it. Then it just got to the point
where we're like, I don't think this is holding our
interest after a while, especially once it got on into
that second game. So we went to some podcast viewing
and enjoyed ourselves better as a result of that. But

(00:55):
there's something that came from that second game that lands
in our inconceivable this afternoon, So we'll get to that
coming up on Tuesday. As usual plenty to discuss long
worn football conversation. Also, Dallas Cowboys, we're gonna hear from
Brian Schottenheimer, the Cowboys head coach, following his press conference yesterday.

(01:16):
Coming off that forty forty draw with the Green Bay Pack,
it sounds weird to say forty forty draw draw. You
think of one one or nil nil draw in soccer.
So maybe it's just better to just say a forty
forty tie. And that's what it was. So we'll hear

(01:36):
from Shoddy talking about that. As I mentioned, we do
have inconceivable coming up. You like ice cream, right? I
know you said it doesn't like you, but I mean
you've had what lactose free ice cream?

Speaker 4 (01:47):
Right?

Speaker 2 (01:47):
Yeah, you can do that.

Speaker 5 (01:48):
And I had a delicious I think it was coconut
milk based lemon bar ice cream a Jenny's when I
was in Houston.

Speaker 1 (01:55):
Wow, okay Jenny's. Is that an ice cream imporium in Houston?

Speaker 3 (01:58):
Yeah? I think it's. I think it's everywhere.

Speaker 5 (02:00):
I don't know where it started, but it's all over
Texas and there's even one back of DC.

Speaker 2 (02:03):
Is the one in Austin?

Speaker 3 (02:05):
If there is, I haven't seen it, but I know
that it's a chain.

Speaker 1 (02:08):
You just set all over Texas. I'm like, is there
one in Austin? I'm not aware of could.

Speaker 3 (02:13):
Yeah, there is one in Austin.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
Where is it?

Speaker 3 (02:16):
It is?

Speaker 5 (02:17):
There's three in Austin where let's see, looks like there's
one on South Congress Okay, one at the Triangle okay,
and one of the.

Speaker 1 (02:27):
Domain Okay, very fashiable areas, all of them. Okay, it's
fashionable ice cream? Yeah, okay, all right. So the reason
why I say that is coming up and inconceivable and
our junk food fast food update and inconceivable the ten
worst ice cream flavors?

Speaker 3 (02:46):
Oh no, is this gonna be Harry Potter style.

Speaker 1 (02:48):
I'm just saying there's there's there's ten that are apparently
not good at all.

Speaker 6 (02:52):
Now.

Speaker 1 (02:52):
I don't think they're like frog flavored or anything like
that Harry Potter stuff, you know. I don't think there's
anything like that, or was it tastes like vomit? One
of them does, and some of the other nothing that bad,
But the ten worst ice cream flavors, that's part of that.
In the three o'clock hour, we'll hear from longrn's head
coach Steve Sarkisian, and maybe some from him in the

(03:15):
four o'clock hour as well. Also in the three o'clock hour,
our weekly conversation with Greg Tepper, editor in chief of
Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, to talk college football and
even the high school football in the lone Star state.
So that's coming up. And in the three o'clock hour.
Also in the three o'clock hour, our man, our colleague,

(03:37):
our sideline reporter from our Long Horn Radio Network broadcasts,
will Matthews a conversation with Ryan Wingo.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
That'll be in the three o'clock hour.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
In the four o'clock hour, in addition, like I said,
perhaps to hearing some from Sark, we will also hear
from arch Manning the media that gathered about him yesterday,
so we'll hear that as well. All the while today
we'll keep you updated on what's going on with the
Major League Baseball playoffs. The Wild Cards series began earlier today.

(04:11):
They continue throughout this afternoon, the down the stretch portion
of one game and the startup of another. Here during
the program, will keep you updated on that. They are
right now on the top of the eighth in Cleveland
with the Tigers leading the Guardians two to one.

Speaker 2 (04:28):
Trek scouble.

Speaker 1 (04:31):
Going through seven innings there for the Tigers and Gavin
Williams gave them I believe, sixth and a third before
he was replaced. But the Tigers are able to squeeze
home a go ahead run in the top of the seventh,
and now it's in the top of the eighth with

(04:52):
Detroit leading Cleveland two to one. That is at Progressive Field,
that is in Cleveland, with game number one of that
best three Wildcards series. The other one getting ready to
start is at Wrigley Field in Chicago on the National
League side, Cubs Padres Game one getting ready to get
underway in just a few minutes, so we'll keep you
updated on these ball games are going, of course later today.

(05:15):
Red Sox and Yankees will start, I believe at five
o'clock this afternoon our time, and then the Dodgers and
Reds in the Nash League will go at eight o'clock tonight.
Those are the other two series, but there are two
series are getting underway and are underway now, and we'll
keep you updated on those. They're just wasn't a great deal,

(05:36):
I think, to come from those Monday night football games
last night, and I kind of understand what the networks
are doing there. They're like, look, we know in advances,
they're making their selections, and obviously, in case you're wondering,

(05:57):
the lead selection most weeks goes to NBC for Sunday
Night Football. However, the other two networks, Fox and CBS
are allowed to protect certain games on certain like that
Eagles Chiefs matchup that was a Fox protected matchup as well,
and there'll be some like that during the course of
the season. The rest of the time, NBC gets the

(06:21):
first choice out of that for Sunday Night Football.

Speaker 5 (06:24):
Yeah, and that way a lot of those things where
you're thinking, how do the Chiefs play that many primetime games?
That kind of works itself out right when Fox can
sort of protect that as you know, that three point
thirty kick.

Speaker 2 (06:35):
That's exactly right, And.

Speaker 1 (06:39):
So then it's kind of I wouldn't exactly say it's
the scraps from the table that are left for ABC
slash ESPN for Monday Night football, but they do wind
up with some scraps, and last night were a couple
of scraps. The second one did not figure to be,
but it turned out that way. The first one, I
think everybody thet Jets Dolphins, so that that actually turned

(07:01):
out to be at least mildly entertaining at the end
as the Jets made a push and cut it to
six late in the game. A great catch for a
touchdown by Garrett Wilson the Lake Travis Graduate, but not enough,
and the Dolphins picked up their first win. In a
battle of ohen threes, Miami was able to win twenty

(07:22):
seven to twenty one to earn their first win of
the season. The second game figured to be better two
and one Bengals, one and two Broncos. Of course, the Bengals,
you know, obviously without Joe Burrow done for the year,
so Browning at quarterback for the Bengals, and it just
did not work. The Broncos have a good defense and
they really just kind of put the hammer on them

(07:43):
and ended up winning at twenty eight to three. And
it just the longer the game went, the uglier got.
It just got you know, unappealing, unentertaining, you know, more flags,
more just ugly play.

Speaker 2 (07:58):
So there was a lot of that.

Speaker 3 (08:00):
Yeah, Aikman said this is not a good product tonight.

Speaker 1 (08:02):
That's coming up and inconceivable his exact quotes on that.
Uh So it was, yeah, it was not It was
not good Monday Night football that was not good. So anyway,
well we'll look at some other football topics as well.
If you like to join in the conversation via the text,

(08:23):
you can do that very simple. To do that, all
you have to do is text the word Texas follow
by your question or comment to eight one five three zero.
So you text the word Texas follow by your question
or comment to eight one five three zero. Standard messaging
and data rates may apply. That's how you can text
the program. The other way to reach us is that

(08:46):
talkback microphone feature where you can actually, you know, leave
us a voice message and we'll play it on the
air if you've you know, as long as you keep
it clean enough, you know, for a family program. So
what you do to access us via that way is
to download the iHeartRadio app on your smartphone if you
haven't already done so, and even if you have, then

(09:09):
the next step you do once it's downloaded is to
search AM thirteen hundred the zone. So when you do
the search for AM thirteen hundred zone, then it pops
right up. And what we suggest to you go ahead
and make it a preset because if you can make it
a preset, that also kind of gives you a little
faster track toward being eligible when we have drawings for

(09:31):
prizes as well, So go ahead and make it a
preset for you. When you pull up AM thirteen under
the zone, and then there's a couple of buttons there.
One's a little white button that has that's if you
want to listen to the programming kind of in a
triangle shape. But then there's another button. It's a red
button with a white microphone. That's the talk back feature.

(09:52):
That little microphone. You just push that and then you
can leave us a message of up to thirty seconds.
So if you know, if you go over thirty seconds,
it's going to cut you off, but you could probably
tell us what's on your mind. If you want to
do that in thirty seconds or last, you can do that.
So anyway you can leave us a message. That's the
talkback feature there, and that is also how we contest

(10:16):
you if you are interested in winning tickets to concerts
or other prices that we give away, that's how we
operate it. We do it through the talkback feature. All right,
So there's the rules of engagement. We hope you'll take
a part in that. Updating the baseball right now, They're
going to the bottom of the eighth in Cleveland, Detroit

(10:37):
still leading the Guardians two to one.

Speaker 3 (10:39):
How'd you get ahead of me?

Speaker 1 (10:43):
Faster, faster, zoo? I don't know, A faster down low,
I don't know.

Speaker 5 (10:47):
I just saw Carrie Carpenter strike out. You know, I
was listening on the way over today, Craig after Carrie
Carpenter's base hit in the first inning. Yeah, Tom Hamilton,
the great broadcaster for the Cleveland ball faver. He said,
Cleveland this season has had a dickens of a time
trying to get this man out.

Speaker 1 (11:08):
That's a good way to describe it. So there, it's
two to one and it is going to the bottom
of the eighth inning, Detroit leading Cleveland, Game one in
the National League.

Speaker 3 (11:19):
Wild Card Game one. They're just underway.

Speaker 1 (11:21):
There's two down in the top of the first with
the Padres batting against the Cubs. Matthew Boyd on the
hill for Chicago. Jake Pavetta will counter for San Diego.
So we'll keep you posting on all of that. We'll
take your text. If you've got a talkback feature comment
to leave us, we'll do that as well. We're here
for you and We're going to hear from Brian Schotnheimer

(11:43):
coming up, the Cowboys head coach here on a Texan
Tuesday afternoon on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone
and where you always listen to us for absolutely gratus
free of charge, the iHeartRadio app. Cleveland Guardians have the
tying run aboard in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Trek School now out of the ballgame. It's a two

(12:04):
to one lead for Detroit, so the Tiger's up in
that one in Game one of their AL Wild Card Series.
Schoo Ball pitched very well, so did Gavin Williams by
that reckoning as well, although he did wind up allowing
two runs and is on the short end the business
end of that two to one ball game right now

(12:24):
as Cleveland bats in the bottom half of the eighth inning,
So scooball ended up throwing one hundred and seven pitches.
He went seven and two thirds innings, scattered three hits
in the one run although the runner at second base
his responsibility right now and they've gone to will Vest

(12:47):
out of the bullpen for Detroit. In the National League A,
Cubs batting in the bottom of the first inning against
San Diego scoreless Chicago with a runner at first and
two down facing Jake Pavetta. That is in the bottom
of the first inning. Game one at Wrigley feeling at
National League Wildcard Series and again the other two Wildcard
series get underway this evening at five o'clock Red Sox

(13:09):
Yankees Game one, and that one will be at Yankee Stadium,
and then Dodgers Reds in Los Angeles.

Speaker 3 (13:20):
Game one at Dodger Stadium.

Speaker 1 (13:22):
All right, let's hear from the head coach. And by
the way, San Diego was able to get out of
that first inning, so they're going to the second inning
with the Cubs and Padres scoreless in that contest. Let's
hear from Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer and first of all,
his comments over the overview and what the focus is

(13:43):
for his team.

Speaker 6 (13:45):
Improving in some areas and focusing on areas that we
need to get better, which there's a lot of those.
But I think it's an exciting time for us because
I do think that there's areas that we can make
large improvements. We're having to play some younger players for injuries,
but we're also playing younger players because we want to

(14:07):
you know, whether you talk about what we do with
Nate Thomas yesterday, you know, rolling him some in at
right tackle, and you know Shamar James getting some work.
I mean, you have to play these young guys because
you're gonna need him at some point. So there's things
we're excited about. But the focuses now, yeah, you move
on to you know, the Jets, another opponent, another championship
opportunity coming in here.

Speaker 1 (14:28):
And a chance get back to five hundred to two
to one with the win of the winless Jets that
they can't do that. One thing that's been glaringly apparent
about this Cowboys team is that other than the second
half of the game with the Eagles and the opener
after the storm delay, that's when the defense played pretty well.

(14:51):
I think boat teams came out after that over an
hour storm delay a little bit out of sorts, and
so the Eagles didn't muster up much offensively, and neither
did the Cowboys as well.

Speaker 2 (15:04):
But that's the best Dallas has looked defensively.

Speaker 1 (15:06):
Otherwise, they've really had their struggles, especially against the past
and Shott n Eimer was asked if he was surprised
by these this ongoing continuation of struggles on defense.

Speaker 6 (15:16):
There's a way to stop having those conversations, and that's
to play better. We're capable of playing better. We need
to play better. I thought our first down run efficiency
and overall efficiency on first down was I think the
best we've had, like sixty five percent win on first down.
Where we struggled was third down again, and we need

(15:38):
to do a better job of self scouting ourselves and
what are we struggling with and what formations are giving
us problems and why we need to practice third down better,
you know, you know, and then obviously in the red zone,
you know, last couple of weeks, we haven't done a
great job of keeping them out of the end zone.
And so for us defense, it's, you know, the explosive

(16:02):
plays have been a problem. And then you know, getting
the people off the field on third down and making
them kick field goals. That sounds like a lot. We
can't fix all of that today. We can't go and
put in a magic defense that's going to fix those things.
We have to fix it through execution and team defense
and communication and better coaching. And that's what.

Speaker 1 (16:22):
We're working for them, all right, So working to that
now here's a little tip for you, if you ever
find yourself in the medium and you're ever at a
news conference, I would advise against asking a coach if

(16:42):
he second guessed himself on anything, because most coaches say no,
and they move on, some bristle at it even and
some might even fire back. The bottom line is is
that you're probably not going to get the answer you
want if you ask a coach if he second guest
himself on something?

Speaker 3 (17:03):
How did you learn that lesson? Did did you learn
that the hard way?

Speaker 1 (17:06):
You've seen it happen too many times over the years.
I never got burned by it as a reporter myself
in the news coming, and I've covered countless news coming,
but I've seen others say, did you second guess yourself
on it? That's the when did you stop beating your
wife question? You know, there's no good answer. Nevertheless, shot
he was asked if he's second guest kicking the field

(17:27):
goal in overtime after Dak Prescott was wrapped up from
behind and dropped on that third down when it looked
like he might have a path to the end zone
and Michael Parsons wrapped him up and dropped him at
the line of scrimmage. They warded him a sack for
whatever reason, because, like I said, if it's unless it's
a negative play, maybe it's a negative and that it
denies you an opportunity.

Speaker 3 (17:45):
I guess for the clicks, Craig, the clicks.

Speaker 2 (17:47):
Yeah there, so there you go. So shot.

Speaker 1 (17:51):
I was asked, did he second guess himself on kicking
the field goal instead of going forward on four down?

Speaker 7 (17:57):
No?

Speaker 6 (17:58):
You know, I mean we had our shots down there.
You know, I didn't. You know, I didn't really like
my third down play call. I thought there's a better
call I could have gone with. That's me being accountable
to the team and myself. And but no, I think
you got at that point. You know, you're in overtime.
You got to give yourself a chance. You get the lead,
and we're gonna always trust our team. You know, we're
going to trust the team. And unfortunately, we weren't able

(18:21):
to win the game, and we came away over the
tie and it doesn't sit well with any of us.
But uh, no, I didn't second guess that thought.

Speaker 1 (18:28):
I'm going to give Schottenheimer some credit on this for
even though he did what every other coach does and says, no,
I don't. I didn't second guess that decision. What he
did say was I second guess my third down call.
He said I could have done better, and that's me
being more accountable to the team.

Speaker 4 (18:48):
Just me.

Speaker 1 (18:50):
I don't think I ever heard Mike McCarthy say I
got to be more accountable to the team.

Speaker 3 (18:55):
What about Jerry Jones.

Speaker 1 (18:59):
He kind of steps around it and walks around it. Not
not really, but I'm thinking of it more in the
coaching realm Jerry's an entirely different topic. But Seanannheimer from
the outset, he has been relatively transparent. If there's things
he's not going to discuss strategically or whatever, he says it.

Speaker 5 (19:20):
And yesterday, I know, we kind of ran out of
time and we were, you know, talking about his comments
after the win, but he was asked about their plan
for Michael Parsons and what that was and how it
works so well, and he said, we're not going to
reveal that because we want to see them again later.
And that is I think a terrific answer and one
that if you're in that locker room, you love hearing.

Speaker 1 (19:40):
That, sure, absolutely, And we hear Sark say it too.
And I got to reveal certain things, you know, and
that even goes to the injury thing, because the injury
report will come out SEC student Athlete Availability Report is
what it's officially called, and it first comes out on Wednesday.

(20:00):
So when we do our DJC law injury update on
Thursday during this program at the three o'clock hour, will
update that deal. But you know, Sark even said yesterday,
you know, and now that we're in the conference play,
we have this, you know, have the student Athlete Availability Report,
and so we'll kind of leave it at that so
people can can look that up themselves. Now, that did

(20:23):
not stop several members of the media for trying to
go around the garage to get to the barn and
asking several players about how Trey Weisner has looked or
so and so has looked or something like that, trying
to get the answer a different way.

Speaker 3 (20:36):
Yeah, and at Moseley and at.

Speaker 1 (20:38):
Moseley another one. And the players, I am not going there.
They they've been schooled on that they're not going to
go there on that. But anyway, to Schoennheimer's credit, he
did second guess himself on the third down call where
Prescott got grabbed from behind, not the fourth down going
for the field goal. So back to the whole thing

(21:00):
about the third down offense, including that call, but third
down offense overall, you know, with all of the conversations
about the defense and the defense not getting the job done,
Shottenheimer maintains, if your third down offense is doing its job,
it takes some of the pressure off your defense.

Speaker 6 (21:19):
Yeah, I think so. We never look at it. We
want to be the first best offense in the NFL.
We want to lead league wins. That's what we want
to do as a football team. And we don't really
get caught up in the rankings per se, either good
or bad, because it doesn't really matter. You got to
find a way to win. But I would say, you know,
we we did some complimentary things yesterday. I thought we

(21:42):
finally won the turnover battle Todd. I thought that was good.
James houston sack was a huge play, and then we
were able to go out and sudden change. But you know, yeah,
we can be better on third down for sure, and
part of it is, you know, being able to live
in more third downs and manageable and things like that.
We're certainly enough to do that. And then in terms

(22:02):
of you know, time and possession. It certainly helps as well.
But I will say again, you know, we came out
yesterday and you know the plan all along is if
we get to third managuble in the first drive. I
was planning on running it the whole time. Very good front.
You know, saw some things that we thought we could
take advantage of from them. You know, they're pretty aggressive,
blitzing defense, and you know they kind of had us

(22:25):
out leverage. So their call was better than our call
on the first third down. But again, it's a sixty
minute game. I'm the first one to always preach it
to our guys. You can't win the game the first quarter,
second quarter, third quarter. You're gonna win it in the
fourth quarter. And so we'll look at it, but the
third downs would probably be the biggest thing. I would
say that we just need to make sure we're on
top of.

Speaker 1 (22:44):
And again to his transparency, he talks about being out leveraged.

Speaker 2 (22:50):
It's good.

Speaker 1 (22:51):
It's a good term there when you've got people wind
up to defend your third down call, which you think
is a solid call, but the defense is prepared for that,
and like he said, you give them credit, You give
the players credit, give the coaches credit for it as well.
The updating the baseball playoff. Xander Bogart's with an RBI

(23:13):
double in the top of the second inning has put
the Podrays in front of the Cubs one to nothing
in that contest, and in the top of the ninth
it is still two to one Detroit leading Cleveland, although
the Tigers have two on two in scoring position after

(23:34):
a couple of walks, a pitching change and a sack
bunt and an infield out.

Speaker 3 (23:42):
A diving catch by Brian Rokiel.

Speaker 1 (23:44):
Yeah, nice play made to get the second out of
the inning. So they're still trying to get out of
it there. Cubs just got out of the top of
the second. Podras, however, have a one nothing lead as
they'll go to the bottom of the second a Wrigley
Field that's in the National League Wild Card, and again
it is still one Detroit. On top of that, one
second hour of the program here on sports Radio AM

(24:05):
thirteen hundred of the Zone here on a text on Tuesday.
Happy to have you with us today, Craig Way joining
by the producer Jay Carman. Glad to have your contributions
as well on our text line You have only to
text the word Texas and maybe with a capital T
or all caps, but text the word Texas followed by
your question or comment to eight one five three zero.

(24:29):
Standard messaging and data rates may apply. Also, you can
reach us with your voice on the talkback microphone. What
I have to do is download the iHeartRadio app. It's free,
easy to use if you have it already download even
if you have. Then what you do is you do
a search and the little micro the magnifying glass search

(24:49):
thing in the search Windows, search for AM thirteen hundred
the zone.

Speaker 2 (24:53):
It'll pop right up. And then when it.

Speaker 1 (24:54):
Does, you then will see the button, a little red
bunt with a white microphone. You tap that, and then
after you tap that, you've got thirty seconds to leave
us a message, a question, a comment, whatever might be
on your mind on that before we hear from long
Horn's head coach, Steve Sarcasian and coming up a little

(25:17):
bit later on this half hour, Greg Tepper, editor in
chief Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. We taught college football
and high school football in the Lone Star State with
tap that's coming up in a little bit updating you
on the baseball playoffs. The game going on right now
is in the top of the fourth inning at Wrigley
Field in Chicago, a National League Wild Cards Series game

(25:38):
number one between the Cubs and the pod Race, and
San Diego holds a one to nothing lead Asander Bogart's
double in the top of a second brought home the
game's only run. Bogarts is at first and the Potteries
have another runner at third base right now with just
one out right now, so they're trying to get the
jump on Matthew Boyd and really put him on the

(26:01):
ropes already where they won to nothing lead, and a
little bloop you No, it was an actual catch by Dansby.
Swanson did a great job on that for the second half.
I thought that was going to drop in and Swanse
had a great over the shoulder catch for out number two.
And I think it helps when you don't have the
fastest runner on the planet standing on third base, and

(26:23):
Manny Machado was standing on third, so we had to get.

Speaker 3 (26:25):
Back to the back. Yeah.

Speaker 5 (26:26):
So now it looks like I have somehow surged ahead
of you, Craig, because the next batter just flied out
to right and the inn it is over the Cubs escape.

Speaker 2 (26:35):
Yeah, all right, so they are out of the inning there,
all right.

Speaker 1 (26:38):
And then earlier today in the first final of a
wild Card game, Detroit holding off Cleveland to win. They
beat the Guardians in Cleveland in Game one by a
score of two to one. Trek scoobl gets the win.
He went seven and two thirds innings and picked up
the win on that. Okay, to the text line, a
man sepal said, Hey, I coached did it task him

(26:59):
for year? About a half year. Really, we couldn't sell
our house from our previous place. The Itasca, for those
who you don't know, is in far northern Hill County,
right near the Hill Johnson County line. It's up northwest
of Hillsboro. And I thirty five w like he going
to Fort Worth, home of the Wampescats, which is I

(27:20):
think the quinn essential high school mascot name in the
state of Texas.

Speaker 5 (27:25):
If I find a better one, I'll let you know,
but you probably know all of them already, so I.

Speaker 3 (27:29):
Trust you that's it's a really good one.

Speaker 2 (27:31):
You know.

Speaker 1 (27:31):
We've got a great one here in town in the area,
in the Huddo Hippos. It's the only hippos in the
in the state and a lot of you know, we're
used to it around here. Oh you say, huddo hippos
in another market, Like, wow, that's an interesting one. Yeah,
I'm again is Grand View zebras are interesting? Can nippa
Purple Rock Crushers are up there? I would say the
Golden cranes from Crane the winter's blizzards. There's lots of

(27:54):
unique ones out there as well.

Speaker 5 (27:57):
One of these days, when we have time, well, we'll
go through unique.

Speaker 1 (28:01):
Oh yeah, the devils like satans? Are they still the
Satan's up there?

Speaker 8 (28:04):
They're not.

Speaker 5 (28:05):
One of my coworkers was a satan alone. They're now
the firebirds.

Speaker 1 (28:11):
Okay, all right, yeah, okay, uh so that's good. So
that that was from Seapowl on the tax line. Also
on the tax line, in response to our story about
the worst flavors of ice cream on that survey, somebody
said ice cream should not taste like a watery fruit
or a sour vegetable. Add fruit that goes with it.

(28:33):
Could not possibly agree more good take absolutely agree. Throw
some strawberries in at the panel ice cream if you
want to, whatever, you can do that kind of thing.

Speaker 2 (28:41):
Don't.

Speaker 3 (28:42):
Yeah, he had a chocolate covered strawberry.

Speaker 1 (28:45):
Yeah, and I like strawberry ice cream, but but I
don't like.

Speaker 3 (28:50):
Watermelon ice cream. I'm not I'm not that uh.

Speaker 1 (28:53):
And then we were talking about the official Troy Eateman
sounding off on the officials. Somebody said, did you see
the hit my pens eight on? The Oregon receiver said
his head got rocked back helmet to helmet.

Speaker 3 (29:04):
Wow.

Speaker 1 (29:05):
So yeah, as a miss targeting, it was. It was
absolutely a mistarting. All right, let's hear a little bit
from Logwrnon's head coach, Steve Sarkisian. Will hear some of
the four o'clock hour. Oh yeah, Todd points out to
Pittsburgh State Gorillas. That's a college, but you do have
Trent out just west Abilene, the Trent Gorillas. And I
talked to Ladies, she was in her eighties at the time,

(29:27):
about how the mascot came to get his name. She
was a cheerleader in the twenties and she was in
her eighties by now, this was in the mid eighties,
and she said, we just wanted something that was real
ferocious looking in Gorilla kind of seemed to be the one,
and they had a big gorilla embroidered on their sweaters,
their cheerleader sweaters back in the day that Trent gorillas.

(29:48):
That would be another one there. Okay, to hear from
Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkisian. We brought you some of
it yesterday, but I wanted to hear Sark a couple
of comments we didn't get to yesterday, some comments where
Sark was talking about Florida in specific and matching up

(30:12):
with the Gators, And one of those things was.

Speaker 2 (30:18):
The thoughts that he had on DJ Lagway and his
thoughts on Lagway.

Speaker 1 (30:24):
He's had some ups and downs and has been banged
up as well, but Sark still sees an awful lot
in Lagway.

Speaker 6 (30:30):
Well, he's a very talented player, you know.

Speaker 9 (30:32):
Obviously we recruited him really hard coming out of high
school out of Willis and had a fantastic high school career,
you know, don't I don't think the agenda was to
play him as a true freshman, right, They had a
transfer and who ended up getting injured and DJ steps in.
I think he goes six or seven and one as
a true freshman starting quarterback. High expectations coming back and

(30:56):
probably hasn't gone the way you know he coached Napier.

Speaker 4 (30:59):
Everybody will off.

Speaker 9 (31:00):
But what I do know is the competitor and the
talent is still in there, and so we better be
mindful and better be ready to get the best version
of DJ Lagwey. I know the competitive Lagway, I know
the competitor that he is. I know the coach that
Billy is. And they've had they've been scheming people up.
They just maybe have men hitting them here in the
first few games, but they're gonna attack us, and they're

(31:22):
going to tack us down the field multiple shifts and
motions and things, and so we've got to.

Speaker 6 (31:26):
Do a great job stop in the run.

Speaker 9 (31:28):
But we better be we better be cautious and aware
of them throwing the ball down the field.

Speaker 1 (31:32):
All right, We're going to hear more from Sark coming
up later as well, talking more about Florida and about
the SEC and all that. Up next, we'll talk college
football and high school football in the state of Texas.
Greg Tepper, the editor in chief of Dave Campbell's Texas
Football Magazine. Our weekly conversation with Tap is up next
here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone. In

(31:53):
the iHeartRadio app the iconic Willie Nelson in the three
o'clock hour, which brings us to our weekly conversation on
a Texan Tuesday. But before we do, the other thing
that brings us to this is to update the Baseball
Wild Card games going on right now. They're going to
the top of the fifth at Wrigley Field in Chicago
with the Podres leading the Cubs one to nothing. The

(32:16):
earlier final in the American League Game one was Detroit
over Cleveland two to one in Cleveland. The reason why
I say it also leads us in to our weekly
conversation is because the editor in chief of Dave Campbell's
Texas Football magazine, Greg Tepper, is a to the death
Rangers fan and still a season ticket holder?

Speaker 2 (32:37):
Are you not, Tip?

Speaker 1 (32:39):
I am, yes?

Speaker 7 (32:40):
Is charged?

Speaker 2 (32:41):
Okay? All right?

Speaker 1 (32:42):
So with that in mind, I mean, the word came
down last night that Bruce Boch is going to step
away from the managing position. He's been offered a front
office position. There wasn't I haven't seen official word on
whether he's going to accept that or not. And Jake
pointed out yesterday that the Giants all of a sudden
have a managerial alone opening, So who does But how
about your thoughts just away from football for a moment,

(33:05):
since you followed the Rangers so closely in the season
ticket older on Bruce Bochi's accomplishments, Uh, he did what
no manager's ever done and managing the Rangers or a
world title. But but over the overall picture, on Boach,
he's dying me in Arlington.

Speaker 7 (33:20):
I think it's funny that like, over the course of
Ranger's history, like there, there's there's all of these. There's
a couple of managers who are thought of like kind
of through rose colored glasses. Bobby Valentine is beloved in Arlington.
Ron Washington is beloved in Arlington. You know, those guys
to a certain extent. Art Howell was a guy that

(33:42):
that people liked. H But but really, you know those guys,
Ron Washington aside, they didn't really win anything, right, Like
here is a guy who did what what essentially nobody
could do, which is get them over the top.

Speaker 4 (33:57):
Uh.

Speaker 7 (33:57):
And and you know he I think he kind of
cemented himself as as quite frankly, one of the finest
managers in baseball history. And what he did to bring
the Rangers to the promised land what will not be forgotten.
It will it will be very interesting to see where
they go from here, because, uh, the if you read
the tea leaves of what Chris Young, the new general

(34:19):
manager kind of president general manager, is saying, he's essentially saying, yeah,
we're gonna get get kind of cheaper here, and we
don't know if you're the guy we want to be
to be managing a really young team, you know, a
team built around Wyatt Langford and the game built around
Evan Carter. And then he's youngster than Jack Lighter and
so I think it's interesting kind of the tea leads there.

(34:41):
But but certainly he's beyond approach.

Speaker 5 (34:44):
Uh.

Speaker 7 (34:45):
Even in a short time, he will be remembered probably
as as the best manager in Rangers history, because he
did with nobody else could do. Speaking of baseball, one
more baseball thing before we get going to that promise.
We'll talk a quable here in about this is the
first time and this is probably damning for me as
a baseball and then the first time I've actually sat
down and watched a Tarik Schooble start for Detroit.

Speaker 3 (35:06):
Oh yeah, holy cow, Oh my gosh, dude's.

Speaker 2 (35:10):
Pretty good.

Speaker 7 (35:12):
The camp the camp I made, and obviously it's very
Rangers base.

Speaker 3 (35:16):
Uh, it's like it's.

Speaker 7 (35:17):
Cliff Lee through one hundred. It's like some of the
like some of times. I was, I was blown away
watching him today and in a nice uh a nice
Mattinee here in on on my television in the office.

Speaker 2 (35:30):
Yeah, yeah, there you go.

Speaker 5 (35:31):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (35:32):
Greg Tepper, the editor chief Tape Campbells Texas Football, was Okay,
this will lead us in the football.

Speaker 3 (35:40):
We Uh.

Speaker 1 (35:41):
I was reading a thing from CBS Sports Line apologizing
to me, a fantasy football coach, for for grading my
draft the lowest and figuring out the last because really
the reason why they did that is because the lot
the algorithm does not figure out our league and our
scoring system.

Speaker 2 (35:59):
So I'm off to a three in one start.

Speaker 1 (36:01):
And it was apologizing to me, and it said, we
have to apologize to Craig Way because Wampa's Cats were
expected to finish at the bottom. Now you know, as
I know, Wampas Cats is from my Taska down there
in Northern Hill County, and and I was, I was,
you know, I was explaining that to Washington, d c.

Speaker 2 (36:20):
Native.

Speaker 1 (36:20):
Although he is the voice of the bass Drop Bears,
Jay Carman, our producer, about this about the Wampas Cats,
and then so on our text line, folks had texted
in some things and and our man Sea Pala said,
Craig does normal Frost Polar Bears. Frost actually played Itasca
to him the season I think it was, and I said,
that was definitely the mascot name. So you get into

(36:40):
it every bit as much as I get into it
as well. With the unique quality and depth of the
mascot names in the state of Texas, don't you.

Speaker 7 (36:50):
Yeah, most certainly, it's one of the things that really
kind of sets this state apart. And and and for
whether you're talking about you know, mask outset, I think
are just very near and dear to the community's hearts.
Like Santimu Laniers is the Vokes for the vocationals uh
Houston Sharpstown is the Apollos, which is something that I've

(37:12):
always liked. Or you just get into the wacky and wooly,
whether it's the Hamlin Pied Pipers or the Roscoe Plowboys.
You know, you get these things. What I love a
small shout out to a local team that maybe they're listening.
Uh is Huddo, Huddo, I see, because of course Huddo
is the hippos. Uh. There there's a great story about

(37:34):
a I believe, like a train derailment and a hippo
got loose in town along those lines. Yeah, circu strain,
that's exactly right, and the hippo got loose in town.
For those who don't know, Huddo is booming. Huddo's you know,
booming in a big way. And and they're opening up
a second high school, and of course you have an
iconic mascot there, a Huddo High school. So what is
the mascot going to be for the second high schoo

(37:56):
when they open? Of course it will be the hippos.
Because if it isn't broke, just don't fix it. Uh,
that's fantastic. So between them and then I love. By
the way, if you go out way out west to
El Passo, they have got a bunch of really good ones.
Del Paso del Valla is the conquistadors. Uh, let's see
one of them. Who who's the as text that is

(38:17):
del Paso? Uh, Eldorado is the conquista doors somebody's the
assext and they're gonna yell at me, maybe Montwood is
the assext.

Speaker 1 (38:25):
Right, Well, the del vaer, as you pointed out, is
that or as they like to sat out there. And
I was told this one time, it's the Conquistadores and
not not just conquistadors, it's the Conquista d'ores. So I
was like, okay, okay, all right, duly.

Speaker 3 (38:42):
Noted El Dorado as texts, Yeah, Eldorado very much.

Speaker 7 (38:46):
I have that backward. El Dorado is the astext and
the Delva is the Conquistadores. So yeah, they uh, they've
got they've got some some good ones going on out
there out in the sun City as well. So it's
a it's a a another beautiful part of this of
this the states. The other thing that I like, and
I don't know how you feel about this, Craigway, is
the mascot where the boys and girls mascots are different.

(39:11):
That like Stevenville is the football team is the Yellow
Jackets and the girls basketball team is the honey Bees,
things like that. I don't know how you feel about
about the difference between the boys and the girls mascots
within the within the school.

Speaker 1 (39:25):
Some of them are cute and they did like like
Farwool they're in the far Northwest Panhandle.

Speaker 2 (39:31):
The steers for the boys, the girls of the Lady Blue.
So there's that.

Speaker 5 (39:34):
You got one Jake in Mina, North Dakota, the Magic City.
You've got the magicians and the majets with different logos. Okay,
but but the basketball courts only got the magician with
a big mustache.

Speaker 3 (39:46):
So I see why they went different directions there.

Speaker 5 (39:49):
See.

Speaker 1 (39:49):
Now, there's there's some that makes sense like that, and
then there's some that have kind of well, let's just
say they haven't met cultural appropriation yet. You know, you
get out there to Friona and you got to achieve
to but the girl's name is the Squaws and uh
and then uh in commands, she had one of those
like that as well as if I remember correctly, So uh, Yeah,

(40:12):
there's some of those that that haven't kind of, you know,
updated themselves yet so to speak.

Speaker 7 (40:17):
Yeah, they're they're they're handful of those. Those are always
very very very odd. And then but like it's it's
you know, it's it's it doesn't make sense that like
if you're the in the mask, if your mascot is
the bulls, right, well, I've got bad dudes, I don't
want to. I don't want to, you know, uh, turn
this into an educational show here, but the lady bull doesn't,
you know, it's it's a little tough. So so you know,

(40:39):
those are those are the types of things that I've
always I'm always learning things. I want to say. Yeah,
and there's one. I think it's comfort comfort. Their mascot
is the is the the Bobcats. But then I think
there the girls teams are the Deer.

Speaker 1 (40:53):
I'm fairly certain. And it's it's something very yeah, that
is correct. And down in Molten, down in that south
central very much uh Czech heritage, Polish heritage. Molton is
the Bob Katz with a K and a Z and
the girls team is the Bob Kittens.

Speaker 2 (41:12):
So you got the Bobcats and the see.

Speaker 7 (41:14):
That's that's great. Another another good part of the fabric
of high school sports here in Texas.

Speaker 2 (41:21):
Well, the fabric of college football in Texas.

Speaker 1 (41:23):
And there was absolutely zero, not a no, no change
whatsoever in the Dave Campbell's Texas Football FBS power Poll.
I guess uh that that the staff didn't see anything
and the earth shattering enough to shake say A and
M from the top spot Tech from the two Texas,
the three TSU, the four Houston five, that sort of thing.

Speaker 7 (41:45):
I think basically a big part of it is that
almost all of these teams were off, like I like,
I believe most of the team nine of the team
or the team that think was well. It took the
week also, it was just a thin week, and then
a lot of the results were just relatively kind of
staying within the current landscape of what we saw, you know,
A and m you know, playing a real to borrow

(42:07):
a phrase from the host of the show real passy
Pole against Auburn to come away with a a you know,
a win playing simplement and in the end a good
lost in column, but ultimately probably not you know, you know,
it wasn't good terrible enough for them to be not
from the number one. But uh, you know, you saw
TCU play a battle with Arizona State on Friday night

(42:30):
and end up coming up just short. You know. The
one that I was, and certainly I want to be
clear that that I support our friend Mike Craven and
whatever he does. The one that I am very interested
in seeing what he ends up doing with is Houston.

Speaker 6 (42:43):
Houston.

Speaker 7 (42:43):
You know, to go on you know, to go on
the road and to nudge out a twenty seven twenty
four win over Oregon State. Uh to you know, to
get a win into overtime, a real gutty performance to
come back late and then win that game in overtime.
And I know Oregon State is all in five, but
certainly you know that has to count with some vas
still a quote unquote power five team there, And so

(43:06):
I think I'm interesting to see what the upside is
for Houston. Obviously a huge game this week against Texas Tech.
If they win that one, less to say, things will
will shift around. But that was the one that whenever
Mike filed his guitar, pall that Okay, that's interesting. You're
you're keeping them, keeping them a steady there with with
for protoons. That's the team that I think has got

(43:26):
some sal upside.

Speaker 2 (43:27):
Nowe yeah, I agree with you.

Speaker 1 (43:29):
And to use the phrase from the host of your program,
you one could say that A and M kind of
played with its food a little bit with with with
Auburn and Houston likewise, and even Baylor giving up twenty
seven points as Mike wrote, So the Cowboys as a concern,
but they did with that score forty five and still
water to get the win.

Speaker 7 (43:51):
Yeah, then they get the win. And ultimately that's that's
the name of the game, especially for Baylor, where you know,
right now they're not necessarily in the business of style points. Uh,
they basically get wins. However, they got actually on the
road against the reeling Oklahoma State team. You're right, I've
got major, major, major concerns about this defense, uh, especially

(44:11):
as they get into the real thick of Big twelve play.
But ultimately you ended up getting to win. And then
kind of the opposite U the opposite situation with with
A and M where they take on an under an
undermanned Auburn team that led by Jackson Arnold who feels
like he's he's really you know, feels like Austin Westlake
might have done some mean things to him because it's

(44:33):
just not working for him right now. And there at
Auburn and and look, defensively, you could have no notes
about what they were able to do. They absolutely smothered Auburn,
and Auburn's only score of the game was a defensive score.
And and it never really felt even when you know,
even when a Auburn got the ball back, you know,

(44:54):
with under two minutes to go and needing a touchdown
to win it. You never really felt like they were
much of a that's courtesy of, of course, the the
A and defense. But I do think that and I
know that Mike Galco had some choice words from the
media about asking some of these questions. Give A and
m give A sloppy game play? It is simple. I
mean they turned the ball over, they gave up thirteen

(45:17):
or that they've been thirteen penalties for almost one hundred
and twenty yards when they were able to hold onto
the ball. Being good things happen, they rang up more
than four yard golfmins. But they kept shooting themselves in
the foot. That'll fly at home against Auburn. It will
not fly against the kind of the upper cross of
the SEC. And so I think that is one of
the things that for A and if if that's the

(45:39):
egg ula, that's the biggest agula, cool that you can
live with that, but make sure that you keep it
within the bounds of this game against a relatively beatable
Auburn team.

Speaker 1 (45:49):
Talking football with Greg Tepper, editor in Cheap Dake Campbell's
Texas Football magazine, let's jump to high school. Is the
best six eighteen in the state of Texas that nobody
is talking about? Fort Ben Ridgepoint?

Speaker 7 (46:05):
Yeah, they are. And I think that this Ridge Point
team we kind of had our eye on them for
for a hot minute simply because they are from a
from a recruiting perspective, perhaps the most loaded team in
Texas high school football. They are our recruiting folks, Greg
Powers and Mallory Hartley are gaga about Fort Been Ridgepoint

(46:29):
and the talent and they've got not just at the
senior class, but but juniors and sophomores. They are loaded
down there, and so far, so good for them. You know,
in their game against against Bridgeland, they kind of pulled
away late in that game, and that was kind of
the one thing that was a little bit you know,
it probably they won thirty one to three, but it
probably wasn't as resounding as that is that score is.

(46:51):
But ultimately they've gone out there and they have taken
care of business and they are the clear favorite now,
you know, after a win over four bench Travis, they're
a very very clear favorite in District twenty one six A,
depending on who gets that fourth playoff spot. Actually, let
me make sure. I'm not sure or no. I think
they're actually locked into the Division one routes. And I
will just say this, We've kind of had this conversation

(47:14):
around the office, and perhaps you and I have talked
about it at times. Sixteenth Division one does feel much
more gettable this year, just because Lena Park North Shore,
especially in Region three, it feels like they are they're down.
They've already got that lost to South through Cliff on
their record. Duncanville is beatable, beatable. We feel like, you know,
a lot of the real power appears to be going

(47:35):
over to the Division two bracket, and so if you
are a four pen ridge point at least in Region three,
suddenly you feel like things could really open up for
you and this could be a really special year. But
I love what Rickla Favors ball Club has. They're in
four pendicy. I think they are a team that is
going to be making some noise when.

Speaker 3 (47:52):
We get to November.

Speaker 2 (47:53):
What did you make of as a jump to four A?

Speaker 1 (47:56):
What did you make of that Salina Panther Creek game,
which was a it was a barn burner down into
the final five minutes of the ball game and there
were lead changes back and forth. I things Selina finally
showed its pedigree, but uh, but Panther Creek Uh looked
like it was ready for the challenge.

Speaker 7 (48:13):
Yeah. I think that this really reflects well on on
Panther Creek and what they were able to do. The
top line talent for them is so remarkable. I mean,
Jalen a Lot and Donovan Webb and I know he
left with an injury. Hopefully, you know, hopefully it's not
as bad as as it could be. In their quarterback
grayl and Fry, they are, they are. They've gotten dudes

(48:35):
playing and simple and I thought that they played unafraid
against a really good, you know, Salima team that has
got plenty of weapons himself. Uh. This is now a
couple of times this season already that Selina has to
use the same phrase twice in the same interview. Played
with their food a little bit. And and you know,

(48:56):
a couple of weeks ago against Franklin, they were they
they flet around a little bit because you know, a
three eight Division one team they're on one team in
three Division one, to be clear, but a team that
you're a full classification bigger than and then you go
back the week before that, they played Gunner, where you
are three full divisions larger than them. Again, at the time,
the number one team in three Division two is still
the number three team in three Vision two and at halftime,

(49:18):
I want to say that was a one point game,
and so that's they have been playing around a little
bit defensively. I've got a little bit of concerns there.
But the one thing they got the you know, you
see those ads one weird trick to win a football game,
you just press the vote Bentley button and vote Bentley
can bail you out of a lot of situations. He
is a remarkable player. And for now, you know, it's

(49:42):
a very tough district. They're gonna have to deal with
an undefeated Sulfur Springs in a couple of weeks. I
think Paris is dangerous as well. But for Solina, they
they feel like if they can clean up the defensive
issues and kind of the defensive lapses, they've certainly got
VQV one to take them back to back their in
forty D one.

Speaker 1 (50:02):
The other story, by the way, and we'll we'll find
out more about them than I think this week. That's
that's kind of slowly bubbling down. I don't know how
many much that the local media has paid attention to them,
But this, this business of what's going on at east
Side Early College is developing something really special. Here's here's
a team, uh that in the time that they've been

(50:23):
east Side after they shut down, after the school shut down,
the old Johnston High and they changed the name and
they and they came back, they've never had a winning season.
And here they are with the winning season. Here they
are unbeaten the district play Uh, they they beat Travis. Uh,
they play Maine or New Tech and if they find
a way with it, there they are. Uh, they're in

(50:47):
the driver's seat to make sure they get the school's
first ever playoff berth and and maybe this is a
little far fetch tap, but if they can beat teams
like Northeast Early College and and then we're talking about
a team that would be playing LBJ for the district
title in the final week of the regular season, it's

(51:07):
an amazing story of what's going on over there.

Speaker 7 (51:10):
So I talked with this is the at the beginning
of last year. At the end of the twenty twenty
four season, I talked with Luis Pacera the coach there
at the Austin east Side for a piece on Texas
football dot Com, and it's I'm gonna be honest after
the fact. Now it should have become obvious that these
are coaches like you don't want me to be talking
to you at that point, because I was writing a
story about some of the most forlorn teams in Texas

(51:33):
high school football. I called for with Diamond Hille Jarvis,
their coach. I called the coach at Monte Alto right
and called, well, all of them had some of the
longest losing streaks in the state of Texas. Off the
east Side at that time had the longest losing streak
in Texas. They ended up, you know, snapping that last year.
It was a fifty one game losing streak. It is inconceivable,

(51:54):
quite frankly, for them to be four and one. It's
unbelievable what Louis Piserra has done. Uh there and they've
gone out and they've they've you know, to beat Austin
Travis last week. I think, you know, you don't you
have to. One of the things I talked about when
I talk about Texas high school football is that you
have to judge things kind of based on a curve.
The expectations at Austin east Side are going to be

(52:15):
very different than the expectations in South Lake Carrol. You
just have to you have to judge them a little
bit differently. And and and when you talk about what
they were able to do last week with a twenty
six to twelve winn against Austin Travis, guys, that is
just a signature win for that program. Like I don't
think you know that for other for most other programs
in the state, that would just be another ho hum, Hey,
fantastic we got win. Put in the left hand column.

(52:38):
For the Panthers, it's special. And I think you're exactly
right when you take a look at that district. You know, look,
LVJ is of course LBJ, and they are going to be,
in my opinion, still even though they're struggling a little
bit at two and two, still the clear favorite to
win the district. But right now, I think you you
look at at east Side as one of the teams

(52:59):
that is in the driver's seat to grab at least
one the playoff buck and arguably finished second in that district.
It is remarkable. And when you talk to When I
talked with coach Prosera last year, he just talked about
how if you do the if you build the right
things and you build the culture, then the wins will come.
Like plain and simple is that we're just going to

(53:20):
have a positive attitude and it's going to happen. And
so you just feel good to see that be true,
that you if you just keep doing good things and
stacking good days, then good things will happen, and winnings
in factious and winnings contagious. And they've got the bug
now there at east Side. It's remarkable, Yeah, it is.
I mean when you think about the fact, remember on the.

Speaker 1 (53:42):
Off off line off scoreboard when we got done with
the television show a couple of years ago, three years
ago whatever, we were talking not only about the losing
true remember we were talking about whether they would even
score any points during year, and I think we wound
up with eight that one particular year. And the fact
is to look, like to say, at our friend Jerry

(54:02):
Forest computer rankings, the fact that they're seventy ninth out
of one hundred and seven and by the way, number
one oh seven is in their district. Who they start
to play achieve the Polar Bears. Speaking of Polar Bears,
I think it's just flabbergasting. It's going to be one
of the stories of the state that they'll get their

(54:22):
first assuming they stay the course, that they would get
their first ever playoff berth As each side, and it's
going to take some research going back to see last
time as the old school Johnston that they got in.

Speaker 2 (54:35):
It's an amazing story.

Speaker 10 (54:36):
Yeah, it is.

Speaker 7 (54:37):
It's one of the stories right now in Texas high
school football. You don't necessarily want to say anything. It's
one of those things like it's like a no hitter,
like you don't want to talk about it, but just
say those good things happen in an each side, like
so far, so good, keep the trad on tracks, get
a couple more winsur of the development, and then they
can really celebrate there for program, it's been a long

(54:59):
time coming then for a program that has needed something
to cheer back. And by the way, from what I
can understand, I believe the last time they made the
playoffs was in nineteen ninety one. In any way, they
when nineteen ninety one was the last time Johnston made
the playoffs, which would I think probably I would have
to make sure about this, but I'm fairly certain they

(55:20):
share that history, and so as a result, ninety one would.

Speaker 2 (55:23):
Be what we're looking at. I think you're exactly right.

Speaker 1 (55:25):
I think I do remember reading about that or hearing
about that some now of the old Johnston Rams getting
in over there.

Speaker 2 (55:31):
Hey oh wait, wait, wait, wait wait.

Speaker 1 (55:34):
I've got three games, and you've got to pick one
to transport to. So allow me to be mean to you.
Hear of the three games that you could go to.
I've got one in six A that would be a
resurgent rock Wall who owns a win over North Crowley

(55:56):
hosting longview. I've got in five eight, got number one
Aledo at Dent Ryan, who's also unbeaten. And then the
other one, and this one's out there a little bit.
You got Midland Greenwood against the new kids on the
Black the Block, the lob It Cooper Liberty Group, who
is also five and zero.

Speaker 2 (56:15):
Which one do you are you checking out? If you
could only be at one?

Speaker 7 (56:19):
Okay, I want to be very clear that Alito and
Dent Ryan is the best game of the week. It's
the largest open day of the week. Thirty percent of
the state is off and so so it's a thinner
slate and Alito Dent Rhine is the biggest game of
the state. One hundred and thirty game district winning streak
for Alito, which is incredible, is on the line against
Dent Ryan. So that is the best game of the week.

(56:39):
But the game I'm transferring to is going to be
lobbing Liberty and Midland Greenwood. It's a battle of unbeaten.
It is very clearly the biggest game in Liberty history
because they've only been playing for two years and they're
really fun to watch. They are They've got a quarterback
whose name escapes me at the moment, who has been
really really fun to watch mu They are a they

(57:01):
are dynamic, and it's Colton but Shard is his name.
But green would have been my pick in Region one
of four eight Division one for since the beginning of
the season. I love their quarterback, Lincoln Madrid. They play
a really hard nosed branded defense. This is a really
fun game. So yeah, I'm going to JMP Memorial Stadium
in Midland if I can transport anyway where. Although I

(57:22):
will gain admit that Ryan and Alito is the game
of the week in the state.

Speaker 3 (57:26):
Well put, hey, appreciate the time, Thanks so much.

Speaker 2 (57:29):
Enjoy the week, all right, you two my friends.

Speaker 1 (57:32):
All right, that's Greg chapter, editor in chief Dave Campbell's
Texas Football Magazine. All right, coming up, we'll hear the
conversation Will Matthews had with Ryan Wingo when we continue
on thirteen under the Zone back there on Sports Radio
AM thirteen ers is that we I love it there, Yes, Sarah,
I thought it was.

Speaker 2 (57:49):
The great glow. I love it there.

Speaker 1 (57:50):
On a text on Tuesday, Okay, on the text line,
somebody pointed out Rotan.

Speaker 2 (57:57):
It's a mascot. Do you know Rotan? By the way,
you know they're that's good.

Speaker 3 (58:00):
Well, I know because the texture well, the texture sent
it in. I looked it up during the break.

Speaker 1 (58:04):
Okay, Yeah, the yellow Hammers and seat belt says that's
so cool for Johnson Slash. He said, good for that community,
no doubt about it. We'll keep our eye on them
and see how it goes from they be game at
Main or New Tech this week.

Speaker 2 (58:16):
That'll that'll tell us a little more about.

Speaker 3 (58:18):
Parli Roadesan used to be the claw Hammers too, for
yellow Hammers. Yeah, yeah, way on deck, that's a fun one. Yeah,
uh okay, the.

Speaker 1 (58:30):
Uh the conversation Will Matthews had with Ryan Wingo a
fun conversation as he sat down with him.

Speaker 11 (58:37):
Ryan, this year has been going on, moving forward and
we're just leaving the bye week moving into SCC play.

Speaker 6 (58:46):
Tell us how you were feeling and what we should
expect from you.

Speaker 11 (58:51):
Uh.

Speaker 12 (58:52):
Obviously see played starting off in Florida, going to the slot,
so it'll be a good game. Had a great team
over there. Heard that happens for Crazy over there too,
so that'll be good for me. Really, just to help
my team win whatever that is or whatever the game
plan is, like I said, just trying to do everything
in my power to be able to help my team
in Like I said.

Speaker 11 (59:12):
Sorry sir, when you go on the road, what is
the feeling that comes up? How excited are you to
play on the road in the swamp?

Speaker 2 (59:20):
Yeah?

Speaker 12 (59:20):
I love road games cause you know, like I obviously
get to see new cities, to get to kind of
see new atmospheres in a sense. Obviously we'll be here's
the great atmosphere in my opinion, But like I said,
being able to go to the Swamp, go to Georgia,
go to all these other schools. So we got a
lot of bi weeks, so being able to go out
there see how their fans are gonna get a lot

(59:41):
of booze.

Speaker 8 (59:42):
So it's just kind of just.

Speaker 11 (59:43):
Get that college experience a little bit, the college experience
for you and being locked in your game day ritual.

Speaker 8 (59:51):
What do you do?

Speaker 6 (59:51):
What kind of music?

Speaker 4 (59:52):
Like?

Speaker 2 (59:52):
Talk to us about that.

Speaker 12 (59:54):
I gotta I gotta a playlist. Uh it's you go
do it for your grandma. My she didn't pass away
or nothing, she just was a little sick at a point.
And I kind of I put on my Instagram story
like I'm gonna make sure I go do everything that
you want me to do.

Speaker 8 (01:00:10):
So I make it to the NFL and my degree
and stuff like that. So I got it as that.
So whenever I get to look on and click on it, uh,
it make it remind me of that. But yeah, I
was listening to music. He's a restaurant a few times.

Speaker 7 (01:00:23):
Uh.

Speaker 8 (01:00:24):
And then after that we get to the field, I
put my music on, put my music on. Uh on
my ears, I do a little one of these.

Speaker 12 (01:00:35):
Get get to doing all the little warm up stuff
to preactivation stuff. I do do my catches, So like
I'll catch here, catch her catch here, and then Miles,
her receiver assistant. He'll throw the ball like a little skin.
I gotta catch it behind my back. If I catch it,
it's gonna be a great day. If I don't, we're
gonna go run it back again. So it could be
a great day on the second attempt. After that, really

(01:00:58):
game time at that point.

Speaker 8 (01:00:59):
So yeah, yeah, that's great.

Speaker 4 (01:01:00):
One last question.

Speaker 11 (01:01:01):
You talked about your grandma, and there's just been a
trend throughout you guys, because are really family oriented. Can
you talk a little bit about the importance for family
for you.

Speaker 12 (01:01:12):
I think my importance to the family kind of like
I said, I do. I do everything for my family.
So I got some niegas and nephews at home, and
that's nothing on my home screen. It's like I want
to make sure that I make it out family. I
gotta worry about nothing, so like so I can pay
up their school for high school, college and all throughout.

Speaker 8 (01:01:29):
So and then obviously my mom and my dad. I
got both my parents in my life.

Speaker 12 (01:01:34):
So having that aspect also with another thing because my
dad super family or like he loved his family, like
we used to be on like a little site trying
to find family from all over, Like he found so
many family members from different cities and states that we
didn't even know. So I think me being the baby too,
I was around my dad a lot, like through different
phases of his life in a sense, so seeing like

(01:01:56):
he always going to be around his family, keep his
family around, love his family on me, do anything for Zione.
He would give us, you know, his own for his family,
so kind of, like I said, being able to look
up to that and with a kind of student to
medas to my bus and sisters, and that's just kind
of that's just a give in to be honesty.

Speaker 8 (01:02:13):
Why make sure I make sure I do everything for them?

Speaker 11 (01:02:16):
And then yeah, Brian, thank you so much for your time,
good luck this week's aciation.

Speaker 1 (01:02:20):
All right, Grian, we can go there with our Will Matthews.
We'll be back to wrap up hour number two. I'm
thirteen Under the Zone for the final hour of the
program here on sports Radio AM thirteen Under the Zone
Craig Wade joined by the producer Jay Kerman. Our thanks again,
uh for to Greg Chapper, editor in chief Dave Campbells

(01:02:43):
Texas Football Magazine joined us in the three o'clock hour
of the program, and we talked a lot of high
school football and college football in the state of Texas.
We kind of veered off the track as we are
wont to do, as is our bent on occasion, and
got to talking about mascot names because that was something

(01:03:04):
that we had gotten into earlier. Somebody said, isn't there
a white faces mascot in the panantle. Yes, it's Herford
Herford High but white faces. The cattle, the Herford cattle
have their faces are white. And so that's why it's
brought this up with.

Speaker 3 (01:03:24):
There's so many things you can name a school, though.

Speaker 1 (01:03:27):
Well, they're known for all the cattle up there, Herford cattle.
It's Herford, Texas is the name of the town and
they have cattle, Herford cattle up there.

Speaker 3 (01:03:36):
Okay, so they're keeping it.

Speaker 2 (01:03:38):
Yeah, Yeah, they've had it for decades. So yeah, people
know what they're talking about them.

Speaker 3 (01:03:42):
They're talking about the cattle, right, that's the deal on that.

Speaker 1 (01:03:47):
Somebody said, you mentioned some great mascots add the el
Kampo rice birds. Absolutely, progressive red ants. Yes, some down
there call them the Marching red Ants down in the valley.
The Floydata Whirlwinds.

Speaker 2 (01:03:57):
Yep.

Speaker 1 (01:03:57):
From the South Plains, unless you did already. In West Virginia,
there's the Polka High School, Dots, that's true. And please
look up to the Arkansas School for the Deaf. I
think the band once did a fundraiser for them. Okay,
we'll try to find that out and listen. If we're
going beyond the boundaries of the Lone Star State, I
got some for you.

Speaker 3 (01:04:19):
Can you can you guess this? The Arkansas School for
the Deaf is on deaf.

Speaker 2 (01:04:25):
Oh it's not the mutes, is it?

Speaker 8 (01:04:27):
No, what would it be?

Speaker 3 (01:04:29):
Of course it's the Leopards.

Speaker 10 (01:04:31):
Oh.

Speaker 1 (01:04:31):
I love that.

Speaker 3 (01:04:32):
I love that. Okay, very good, very good.

Speaker 2 (01:04:36):
Okay.

Speaker 1 (01:04:37):
Of course, Texas School for the death Right here in
town is the Rangers. So uh anyway, that's that's really cool.
There's lots of it, I mean, and you go, you
said in the state of North Dakota where you worked,
there's all manner of unusual ones. I like I said,
I remember the Devil's Lake, Satan's and so they eventually
got away from that.

Speaker 8 (01:04:55):
Yep.

Speaker 1 (01:04:56):
I remember talking to somebody to the school about that
back in the late eighties or nineties, and they talked
about how there was always a push for that every year.

Speaker 5 (01:05:05):
Well, I mean the strangest thing is you have the
West Hope, Newburgh glen Burne Sue, who compete against you know,
the actual Sue.

Speaker 7 (01:05:18):
Wow?

Speaker 2 (01:05:19):
Really who have.

Speaker 5 (01:05:21):
Yeah, a variety of different you know reservations up there,
different different school names they compete under.

Speaker 3 (01:05:27):
You also have the Imperials from Napoleon. I like that.

Speaker 5 (01:05:31):
You have the Saint John Woodchucks, that's good. The Laramore
Polar Bears.

Speaker 1 (01:05:37):
Okay, like Polar Bears at Frost or Austin achieve over
here is the Polar Bears.

Speaker 5 (01:05:42):
And the recently disenfranchised and changed. I think I mentioned
them on my first day producing the show, the Dickinson Midgets.

Speaker 1 (01:05:50):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I remember that. Yeah, there was
there's some that had the change because of that. The
Saintans is one probably the one that really needed to
change and finally did, but it took a long long time.
Was in Illinois, it's Pekanilla p e k i n Peakin.

(01:06:13):
But the folks of the town and years and years
and years ago when they named the high school mascot,
they adopted it as if their city name had a
G on the end, like peking, you know in China,
so they went with the Peakin Chinks for a while. Nope, nope, nope, nope.

Speaker 2 (01:06:34):
I called the school.

Speaker 1 (01:06:36):
I asked them about that, and they said, well, there's nothing,
there's nothing offensive meant by it. And I said, what
is your logo and they said it's like, well, happy
Chinese face.

Speaker 2 (01:06:47):
Oh no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, you
can't do that.

Speaker 5 (01:06:50):
Yeah, the aforementioned magicians are due for a logo change.
It looks like a fortune teller at a fair.

Speaker 3 (01:06:56):
Yeah yeah, okay, yeah, yeah, exactly, So honorable mention for
Oh no, it just slipped my mind. I had one
more great you'll come back to it.

Speaker 1 (01:07:07):
And and there's some other interesting ones like in Gabs, Nevada,
the Gabs tarantulas.

Speaker 3 (01:07:13):
That's a pretty cool, man, that's awesome. Yeah, that's awesome.
How's the helmet look? It had a spider on the side,
so you know, that was pretty cool. I remembered mine.

Speaker 2 (01:07:24):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:07:24):
The Ken Mayor bowbells honkers.

Speaker 1 (01:07:27):
Honkers, like like the Baytown Lee Ganders honkers like from
a from a goose right, yeah yeah, Baytown Lee on
the outstair kirts of Houston bedroom community. The Baytown Lee Ganders.
Uh so, yeah, there's there's there's some you know.

Speaker 3 (01:07:44):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (01:07:44):
Nixon Smiley is a small uh incorporated high school thing
with the two towns of Nixon and Smiley, and he
used to have two different ones.

Speaker 10 (01:07:52):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (01:07:53):
They now have just one high school. It's so it's
the the Mustangs.

Speaker 1 (01:07:57):
But when Smiley had their own high was the Bantams
like abandonm Rooge.

Speaker 7 (01:08:02):
Not bad.

Speaker 5 (01:08:03):
You get the see of the northeastern part of the state,
you get the Grafton Spoilers.

Speaker 2 (01:08:07):
There you go.

Speaker 5 (01:08:08):
And of course Teddy Roosevelt called North Dakota home for
a time period in his life. The Grand Forks, Red
River rough Rider.

Speaker 1 (01:08:15):
I have rough riders like San Antonio where he gathered
his rough rider group before they went down for the
big battle, San Juan Hill, the Hat Roosevelt High School,
the rough Riders in San Antonio.

Speaker 3 (01:08:27):
The Churchill High School in San Antonio too.

Speaker 1 (01:08:29):
Yeah, Churchill Chargers, that's right. They weren't like the Churchill statement.

Speaker 10 (01:08:34):
You know.

Speaker 1 (01:08:34):
My favorite, my favorite Winston Churchill quote was when he
used to have these big arguments in Parliament with Lady
Astor and they would go back and forth and finally
Lady Astor one day said Sir Winston, I do believe
if I was your wife, I would put Street nine
in your tea.

Speaker 3 (01:08:56):
And he answered it and if I was your husband
and Lady Aster, I would drink it.

Speaker 7 (01:09:00):
Damn.

Speaker 2 (01:09:01):
So uh yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:09:03):
So anyway, that's one of my favorite Winston Churchill quotes. Okay,
and that will be our finest hour of the Craigway Show.

Speaker 2 (01:09:10):
Yeah yeah, there you go.

Speaker 10 (01:09:12):
The uh uh.

Speaker 2 (01:09:14):
There's a couple other ones, by the way.

Speaker 7 (01:09:15):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (01:09:16):
Two of my favorites mascot names ones in Yuma, Arizona,
the Crims c R I M which is short for
the Yuma Criminals.

Speaker 2 (01:09:27):
That was a high school name, the.

Speaker 3 (01:09:28):
Crood, the meme Machine, the Longest Yard.

Speaker 2 (01:09:31):
When I called the principal.

Speaker 1 (01:09:34):
And then this was back in the days when I
did on the kr LD High School Score or Friday
nights at eleven o'clock during the fall, I did, and
I did a mascot team name of the week every week.
First year, I just just went all through Texas and
then I thought I'm gonna run out of names unless
I expand, so I did and in in in in

(01:09:55):
Arizona was the Yuma Crims short for Criminals well, when
I got the principal on the phone, she did explain
that it's short for the original Yuma High School was
the Criminals. And I laughed and I said, were the
original uniforms black and white stripes?

Speaker 2 (01:10:11):
And she said yes, and I stopped laughing.

Speaker 3 (01:10:14):
Not a bright orange, not a bright orange on orange.

Speaker 1 (01:10:17):
But the reason that they went by that was because
the original schoolhouse was in the old Yuma, the famous
Yuma Prison, the old western Yuma Prison. Fact, there's a
movie there's maybe Glenn Ford back in the fifties called
three ten d Yuman. It was remade back I guess
about ten years or so ago, but there was that.
And then one of the other unusual ones was in Orfino, Idaho,

(01:10:43):
the Oorfino Maniacs. Now, that sounds like a fan group, right,
the maniac.

Speaker 3 (01:10:48):
I know, I think they should take the field.

Speaker 2 (01:10:49):
To well what would that be?

Speaker 3 (01:10:51):
She's a maid?

Speaker 2 (01:10:52):
Yeah, okay, Michael Simbela.

Speaker 8 (01:10:54):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:10:54):
So I called the school to talk. Usually I talked
to the principal or athletic director. Well, the guy who
picked up the phone was the school custodian that day,
and I said.

Speaker 2 (01:11:06):
Can I talk to you about this? He goes, well,
I'm just the janitor.

Speaker 1 (01:11:08):
He said, they're all down the hall to pepper Ally.
I could hear it in the background the gym, and
I said, well, well, let me just ask you.

Speaker 2 (01:11:15):
Do you know why or final high school selected the Maniacs?
And he said, I have.

Speaker 1 (01:11:23):
There are a lot of different theories about it. Some
people think it's because we have a state mental hospital
down the road, but I don't think that's it at all.

Speaker 3 (01:11:29):
I said, you've just given me my answer, so yeah,
or a Feno Maniacs. Where's that? That's a high school
mascot name.

Speaker 2 (01:11:36):
Yuh.

Speaker 3 (01:11:37):
I've pulled out the map, so I remembered a few more.

Speaker 5 (01:11:40):
Yeah, the Holstein's from New Salem almart Home, Salem, Sioux,
which sits on top of a big, you know, four
hundred foot hill at the top of the town overlooking
the field. And the Burroughs from Hillsboro, Central Valley. Very
nice donkey. Yeah, Almo Heights is the Mules right down here.
That's that's been an annual contender.

Speaker 3 (01:11:59):
So Bray Doyle, Oklahoma is the Bray Donkeys.

Speaker 1 (01:12:03):
There's a donkey Bray right, you know. So, oh yeah,
there's there's there's lots in Alva, Oklahoma the gold Bugs.
The gold Bug is.

Speaker 5 (01:12:15):
That on the text line, somebody says that smack Over,
Arkansas used to be the Buckaroos.

Speaker 3 (01:12:20):
That's right. And then you have the Marlton Devil Dogs
in Arkansas.

Speaker 5 (01:12:25):
You have the UA Monticello Bull weavels the Monticello Bowl, Weavels.

Speaker 3 (01:12:30):
Monticello, and then s a U Mule Riders, the Mule Riders.

Speaker 2 (01:12:34):
Yeah, those are college names.

Speaker 7 (01:12:35):
Off of that.

Speaker 3 (01:12:36):
Somebody else asked, there used to be a Cannibal's right.

Speaker 2 (01:12:39):
Yeah, there was, and I forgot where it was.

Speaker 8 (01:12:42):
I know this.

Speaker 1 (01:12:43):
In U Centralia, Missouri they were the Orphans, and in
Columbia was the the Hickman High School the Hickman q
PS K E W A p I E s like
the Coopie Dolls. And then in Kentucky of the Somerset

(01:13:03):
Briar Jumpers.

Speaker 3 (01:13:05):
So there's that.

Speaker 1 (01:13:06):
And in Hoopston, Illinois the Hoopston corn Jerkers. Okay, that's true.
The uh you've a blob who played in Indiana was
a roommate by the way college roommate of Roger Wallace's
and then played for in the NBA, played with the
Mavericks and he was from Effingham, home of the Flaming Hearts.

Speaker 3 (01:13:25):
Oh that's that's great.

Speaker 1 (01:13:26):
Yeah, and he used to play too topless across the
state line and the to topless wooden shoes.

Speaker 3 (01:13:32):
Those are some great uniform possibilities.

Speaker 2 (01:13:35):
Darnty, aren't they?

Speaker 4 (01:13:36):
So?

Speaker 1 (01:13:36):
Anyway, there's unique ones in my homestate of North Carolina.
We ad in Clinton is the Dark Horses, and Knnapolis,
which is near the Charlotte Motor Speedway, was in my
high school's district was the Wonder Boys.

Speaker 2 (01:13:51):
And they just went by the Wonders for sure.

Speaker 3 (01:13:54):
So how can you beat dark Horses if you're right
number one?

Speaker 7 (01:13:58):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (01:13:58):
Right, And they were good. They've been good a lot.
They've won some state titles.

Speaker 2 (01:14:02):
All right.

Speaker 1 (01:14:03):
Coming up, we're gonna hear from Loghorn's head coach, Steve Sarkisian.
We're also going to hear from the head coach of
the Dallas Cowboys. We'll hear from Brian Shonghimber when we
continue on thirteen. Under the zone, Chicago Cubs now lead
the San Diego Padres three one, with the Cubs batting
as a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning,
set up by a wild pitch, so it's three to one.

(01:14:26):
Cubs lead the Padres Game one, bottom of the eighth
at Wrigley Field. Earlier today, Tiger's won Game one in Cleveland,
Detroit beat the Guardians two to one behind Terry Scooble.
The Red Sox and the Yankees get started about forty
five minutes from now at Yankee Stadium in the Wildcard
Round tonight at eight o'clock. The Dodgers host the Reds

(01:14:47):
in that one. All right, let's hear some more from
Long Horns head coach Steve Sarkisian. And it's always going
to be the case that Sark is going to be
asked about Arch Manning, and Arch Manning is going to
be asked about Arch Banning and progress and this and that,
even if he wasn't Arch. Remember they used to ask

(01:15:09):
a lot of questions about and of Quinn, youwers. That's
the way it goes with the quarterback, and with Arch
working very hard to improve over the coming out of
the Sam Houston game and going through the open date
the bye week, Sark was asked about Arch showing his
emotion in that Sam Houston game and trying to put
his adversity behind him.

Speaker 9 (01:15:29):
I think part of it is, you know, Arch has
got more emotion in him than Quinn, and they're different humans,
and that's okay, there's nothing wrong with that. And so
sometimes you know, when you when you throw an interception
or you make a play that that isn't you know,
one that you wish you made. It's okay to show
a little emotion then too, like that, that's not the

(01:15:49):
end of the world. To be some some way, shape
or form. You got to get it out of you,
you know. And Quinn's was his ability was just to
kind of let it flow through. Arch may needed screaming
yell for a second, that's okay too. Like we've seen,
We've seen great competitors for decades that in their own
way celebrate get bit bad plays out, pick up teammates

(01:16:10):
in their own way. And that's why I think it's
important for Arch to be Arch and not try to
be something that he's not.

Speaker 7 (01:16:16):
And so.

Speaker 9 (01:16:18):
I hope we're not answering this question how did Archs
respond to the pick Saturday? But if it does, I
just want him to respond naturally whatever naturally comes to him,
let it happen, and then move forward. And I think
that that will serve him.

Speaker 1 (01:16:31):
Best and turning attention obviously to the Florida game. We
heard from Sark in the two o'clock hour his thoughts
on DJ Lagway now preparing for conference games. Unlike several
of the other SEC schools who mixed in conference non conference,
Oklahoma has obviously done that. The Sooners host Kent State

(01:16:51):
this weekend. The log Warrens front loaded. All of their
non conference games were front loaded. They are four games
so now on eight straight conference games. And it's a
natural question for folks to ask the head coach if
you hold some things back for league play. So Sark
was asked, has he held back much getting ready for

(01:17:13):
SEC games?

Speaker 9 (01:17:14):
I don't know if we discard you know, I think
I think naturally we've seen a lot of different things
through four games, which to me has been a really
good thing, you know, because it's it's really challenged us
to trust our training, whether it's at the line of scrimmage,
whether it's our progressions at quarterback, whether it's aligning to

(01:17:34):
formations on defense. You know, we've seen a lot of
just a variety of things, and so that part's been good.
I don't know necessarily that we held back I think
that we have laid a solid foundation in all three
phases to build upon for SEC play. And you know,
it's not it's like when we go to practice day

(01:17:56):
one a training camp. You know, we lay a foundation
to build on throughout training camp. We just don't come
out and line up in empty formations and run reverses
and things that we've got to teach the foundation of
the offense, defense or special teams. I think that's kind
of part of how a season goes, especially let's say
on the offensive side of the ball, where we were

(01:18:16):
a younger team on offense, we had to make sure
that we built a foundation. We had to go through
growing pains so that we could do the things that
I knew we needed to do as the season went on.
And so you know, hopefully we can put a you know,
the game plan that we've devised for this week is
one that is sound but also allows us to create

(01:18:38):
some explosive plays and move the chains and put the
ball on the end zone. And that would be no
different than on defense or on special teams.

Speaker 1 (01:18:45):
I think it would be safe to say also that
teams do have certain specific plays or strategies with regard
to a conference uponent as opposed to a non conference opponent,
and Starts asked what kinds of wrinkles might he expect
the Gators to throw at them.

Speaker 9 (01:19:05):
They're an excellent defensive front and Sap is a heck
of a player and had a great year last year.
They've got a really good depth on their front, and
they're big, you know, they're they are not the most
you know, play on an edge penetrating defense. They too
gap you, and they do that intentionally because he likes
to play. They play with a lot of split safety
looks and they're a veteran secondary and so they can

(01:19:27):
make things really muddy in the secondary. They can force
a quarterback to hold the ball and then that's where
the pressure can get there. And so, you know, the
key to the drill is we got to maintain the
line of scrimmage. We got to run the ball well,
and then if we can get them out of some
of that too high shell look where they're doubling receivers
and doing things. Because you know, Rye had a ton

(01:19:48):
of respect for Ron Roberts, their defensive coordinator.

Speaker 8 (01:19:50):
He's been doing a long time at a really.

Speaker 9 (01:19:52):
High level, and so they're not built necessarily to always
just sack the quarterback. They're built to really guard your
and then make the pocket feel small on the quarterback.
And so you know, hopefully we can get him out
of some of that stuff. We'll see how that goes,
and then try to attack him as best we can,
you know, and and find some opportunities for some one

(01:20:12):
on ones down the field.

Speaker 1 (01:20:13):
All right, all roads eventually lead back to the quarterback,
whether it's Arch or just the quarterback in general. And
we heard not only in this segment, but but earlier
in the show and yesterday Sark asked quite a bit
about Arch and you know the challenges he has trying
to continue to improve and get better. I think it

(01:20:34):
was our man Corey Mosic kave you who then asked
this next question of Sark. He asked him, does it
frustrate him to see such high expectations placed not only
on Arch, but on college quarterbacks in general.

Speaker 2 (01:20:49):
Does it become frustrating for him?

Speaker 9 (01:20:50):
I wouldn't say it's frustrating, Like I have a I
have a ton of respect for the media, and and
y'all and everybody outside of this room have a job
to do too, And you all are part of why
college football's popularity is so much of what it is.
Without y'all, it wouldn't be as popular as it is today.
And so but I think it's educating our players on

(01:21:12):
how to deal with what everybody has to say about
them and and focus on what they need to do
behind the scenes rather than playing based on the opinions
of others. And that's a thing as a young person,
you know, and it's a lot easier when you're professionals
and and they they've been through the fires. And you know,
we're fortunate here at Texas. You know, we have a

(01:21:32):
we have a you know, NFL market that that that
covers us. We're the largest city in the in the
US that doesn't have an NFL team or an NBA
team or Major League Baseball team, but we're covered like one.
And so understanding that that what the coverage is going
to feel like, but still focus on what you need
to do and not not get swayed by the opinions
of others. I think is a great lesson learned and

(01:21:55):
we will benefit from that, arch will we all will
that down the road. So that's going to serve as
something that I'm glad I went through that because I've
learned from that now I can be even better for it.

Speaker 6 (01:22:05):
But it's just a different age, you know.

Speaker 3 (01:22:08):
It's a different time.

Speaker 9 (01:22:09):
And as much as college football has evolved, the coverage
of college football has evolved, the constructive criticism has risen,
you know, all those things have changed different than they
were five, ten, fifteen, twenty years ago. It's different today,
and so we have to evolve with the times and
with the changing times, and we've got to do a

(01:22:30):
better job as coaches. I'll say that I have to
do a better job with our players of understanding the
coverage of our sport. It's just evolved, but so is
the game, and so as revenue sharing and nil and
all the other things that have changed, the conference realignment,
the college football playoffs. But a ton of change, and
that's just part of it. And we've got to continue
to do a great job of helping our players get

(01:22:51):
through that.

Speaker 2 (01:22:52):
All right.

Speaker 1 (01:22:52):
So does that mean he tells Arch certain things and
the way that he ought to be or does he
just tell Archs to be Arch?

Speaker 9 (01:22:59):
No, think that's that's why they calls coach, you know,
and and that my job is to is to help
him understand that you know, I saw a great version
of him last week. I saw a better version of
him today. Again, there's nothing wrong with with reminders, right,
we would all like reminders of where we're at, not

(01:23:20):
only physically but mentally, and so we try to do
those things. But I also don't want him so consumed
with himself, right, I'm trying to get him more consumed
with his teammates and the scheme and everybody around him
and not worry so much about himself. He's fine, and
he's going to play at a high level, and you know,

(01:23:40):
we've got a lot of faith in him.

Speaker 7 (01:23:42):
We put a lot on him to do that.

Speaker 9 (01:23:44):
But he also needs to understand he needs these other
ten guys with him every snap to perform the way
he wants to perform.

Speaker 1 (01:23:50):
All right, So up next we're gonna hear from March.
We'll hear some comments from March Manning and how he
is handling everything. By the way, the Cubs and Padres
are now on the top of the ninth inning at
Wrigley Field in Chicago, with the Cubs leaning the Padres
three to one. In fact, there's two outs in the
ninth right now, so and in fact, they called a

(01:24:15):
pitch clock violation, a timing violation on Xander Bogarts at
the plate and charged him with a strike, I think.
And that's got Mike Schilt all upset and running out
of the dugout and talking about that right now. But
he stepped out, forcing Keller to relieve it to stop
and was not granted time. Now there is an umpire

(01:24:36):
conversation going on, but Bogarts was charged with a strike.
We'll tell you how that ultimately winds up well here
from arch Manning next on thirteen under the zone. Look
at you dipping into the Janis Joplin file there.

Speaker 5 (01:24:49):
Luckily Texan Tuesday gives you a lot of great options.

Speaker 1 (01:24:55):
Don't know how well known this fact was because Janis
Joplin High school class of Jimmy Johnson really Port Arthur High.

Speaker 3 (01:25:03):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:25:04):
Yeah, they were graduated the same high school class together.
Jimmy said she was not very popular. Change yeah, yeah, yeah,
for both of them. It has gone final at Wrigley
Field in Chicago, the Cubs beat the Podres three to one.
They removed that strike that they initially assessed on a

(01:25:25):
timer violation to Xander Bogart's but he wound up striking
out anyway on a call third strike. So the Cubs
lead that series one game to none. And then there's
two more Wildcard games. One that starts about thirty minutes
from now Yankees Red Sox in New York, and then
tonight is Dodgers and Red's.

Speaker 3 (01:25:45):
In the National League, and that'll be at eight o'clock tonight.

Speaker 1 (01:25:49):
All right, So, so much conversation about Arch banning, you know,
from the coaches and people asking questions and all that
sort of stuff. Billy Napier, the Florida coach, was talking
about him. So let's hear from the man himself. From
his media availability yesterday, Arch banding with the medium.

Speaker 13 (01:26:07):
Just hung out in awesome watching Paul but you really yeah,
they do look good. I like you learning games, Yeah,
just I feel like you always pick up stuff washing
ball and watching their quarterbacks play.

Speaker 8 (01:26:22):
So it was fun, March.

Speaker 10 (01:26:23):
Would you have liked to have had another game and
then building golf with the last one that's supposed to
have a break?

Speaker 8 (01:26:30):
Was the break kind of a good thing for you
to kind of take your set head back and settle.

Speaker 3 (01:26:34):
Yeah.

Speaker 13 (01:26:34):
I think the break came at a good time for
USh to get our bodies back and kind of take
a little mental break over the weekend and then and
get back to it.

Speaker 4 (01:26:41):
So I think came in a good.

Speaker 6 (01:26:42):
Time, good practice, and you thought a great energy energy
and practice whatever being repaired.

Speaker 13 (01:26:50):
Yeah, I feel like our team as a whole went
out there and had a lot of energy and practice
with intent.

Speaker 8 (01:26:56):
Today.

Speaker 4 (01:26:56):
I think having some time off, we're excited to get
back and get rolling. Yeah.

Speaker 11 (01:27:00):
Have you ever been to Gainesville or your thoughts about
playing the Florida Your people told you about the.

Speaker 4 (01:27:04):
Uh what goes on there?

Speaker 13 (01:27:06):
Yeah, I've never been. I think Paint and I've both
played there and they said it's the real deal. So
we're excited to We're excited to get down there.

Speaker 4 (01:27:12):
You walk us through uh in a little bit of detail.
When you step back to make a pass.

Speaker 7 (01:27:18):
When your couple out on you turn. What is it
about that first.

Speaker 10 (01:27:22):
One second, one third one where you say, okay, this
is my guy. I know it's gonna be open, right,
higher problem money and higher games.

Speaker 13 (01:27:29):
Yeah, I think it all depends on the look again
from the defense and and the play that's called. But
you really just wanna throw it to the guy in
the same jersey that colors you so let's not make
it bigger than it is.

Speaker 8 (01:27:38):
Who did you learn from your first road start that
you're gonna take into.

Speaker 10 (01:27:42):
Your second year start.

Speaker 13 (01:27:44):
Yeah, it's really just all about us and executing our plays,
and you gotta over communicate and and play within yourself,
not try to do too much.

Speaker 3 (01:27:52):
He said, you watched all the football over over again.

Speaker 8 (01:27:55):
You have happily have their life or maybe watch Florida.

Speaker 4 (01:27:58):
Or old you or something.

Speaker 2 (01:28:00):
You know, the next little off, you know, even.

Speaker 8 (01:28:01):
Without your lil have been like to catch him, catch
him up only for another week, a little where they are.

Speaker 13 (01:28:08):
Yeah, I think right now we're just focused on Florida
and get ready for Florida. And then anytime you get
to watch other games during the bye week, it's pretty cool.
We it was a cool slate this week, so I
got to watch those games.

Speaker 14 (01:28:19):
Were you able to take your inventory of your first
four games and you know where did you learn to
pout yourself?

Speaker 4 (01:28:25):
Yeah?

Speaker 13 (01:28:25):
A little bit up and down, but uh, I think
we're uh starting to find our stride as an offense
and as a team and gotta carry that on to
sc play arch till you had a little bit second
year Yeah, part of a Yeah, let me see.

Speaker 8 (01:28:40):
It's good job or now we not.

Speaker 10 (01:28:45):
To say far from your vantage point?

Speaker 4 (01:28:47):
Where's this offense?

Speaker 8 (01:28:47):
And miss was from trade down?

Speaker 13 (01:28:48):
Get Yeah, obviously he's uh one of our big leaders
in the team and provides a lot of juice energy.

Speaker 4 (01:28:55):
So he's a really good player.

Speaker 8 (01:28:58):
Arch Stark is.

Speaker 14 (01:28:59):
Talking about guys like you, DJ Lagway, other big recruits
around the country.

Speaker 6 (01:29:04):
They have more pressure on now than ever.

Speaker 8 (01:29:06):
This is what starts trans worth.

Speaker 4 (01:29:09):
How do you handle that, that outside pressure, like, how how.

Speaker 8 (01:29:12):
Do how do you personally view with that?

Speaker 4 (01:29:14):
Yeah? I really just don't make it bigger than it is.

Speaker 13 (01:29:18):
Continue to be myself, be a a normal guy, a
normal student athlete, and then uh co execute one play
at a time till you can.

Speaker 8 (01:29:26):
Do Who would you say the uh vertical game is now?
You know your deep throws? That would you rate where.

Speaker 10 (01:29:34):
He did right now?

Speaker 7 (01:29:35):
Uh?

Speaker 13 (01:29:36):
Yeah, I thought it was good we connected connected with
Ryan unless uh or two weeks ago.

Speaker 4 (01:29:41):
You gotta continue to take take that when it's there,
not force it.

Speaker 10 (01:29:48):
When you were heading into the San Houston game, was
there any uh anything specifically?

Speaker 8 (01:29:52):
Do you ever work you know in terms of your
sequencing or was it just about going out in class.

Speaker 4 (01:29:57):
Yeah, just going out there playing ball and cutting it loose.

Speaker 8 (01:30:02):
Marshal stands out of Florida defense, you know, stematically.

Speaker 13 (01:30:05):
And yeah, they're really good defense. Got a lot of
talent that that front is really good and the dvs
are good. So they're well coached and we're gonna have
our hands full.

Speaker 8 (01:30:16):
Do you see a guy like Dante Moore going to
a white out with cool came.

Speaker 4 (01:30:19):
Collects and test ups and going on the road.

Speaker 8 (01:30:21):
Does that get you excited for what you're about to do.

Speaker 4 (01:30:24):
Yeah, definitely. Seeing other quarterbacks play well, especially in those.

Speaker 13 (01:30:27):
Type of environments, is it's really cool to watch And
hopefully I can take some of what they did and
add to my game.

Speaker 10 (01:30:34):
Let's told you.

Speaker 6 (01:30:34):
These first four games that you're ready to deal with
any kind of university that you face.

Speaker 13 (01:30:42):
Just the way US as a team has battled, and
you know, maybe things didn't go our way quite like
we liked it in the first few weeks as an offense,
but we're going.

Speaker 4 (01:30:50):
To continue to battle. We're gonna continue to get better
every week.

Speaker 8 (01:30:52):
Is there something in the game that you do if
you if you go okiy or just like you can
go to the silence or something you do.

Speaker 3 (01:30:58):
That kind of gets you back in right now.

Speaker 13 (01:31:00):
Yeah, I think just recognizing that that plays over as
one play at a time, whether I throw a pick
or throw a touchdown the next play.

Speaker 10 (01:31:07):
Aren't uh your roomles you like they do these documentaries
and they always include your grandfather and it's always an
honor not only over football, but also your brandover.

Speaker 6 (01:31:19):
How does he take that?

Speaker 8 (01:31:20):
How does he like? You know?

Speaker 2 (01:31:24):
I don't know.

Speaker 4 (01:31:24):
He's a super humble guy.

Speaker 13 (01:31:25):
I don't know if he really cares, but uh, he's
a really good guy and uh just full of knowledge, arches.

Speaker 7 (01:31:33):
Toying, he's anything away from the first.

Speaker 13 (01:31:35):
Start allowed to say uh earlier this year and great.

Speaker 8 (01:31:38):
Names on our names want.

Speaker 13 (01:31:41):
Yeah, I think there's a lot of things to take away,
a lot of things to improve on and get better at.

Speaker 4 (01:31:46):
So we're we're gonna do that this week, aren't there
at a as a quarterback?

Speaker 8 (01:31:50):
What's the biggest challenge from RINGMK and Promers?

Speaker 13 (01:31:53):
Yeah, just making sure everyone's on the same page. You
gotta be loud with your cadence and uh, just making.

Speaker 4 (01:31:58):
Sure we're all flowing as a unit.

Speaker 10 (01:32:02):
Aren't your occupy and as never be Florida or his career,
as he joked a few about having to get some
get back up on his back.

Speaker 13 (01:32:09):
Nah, he hadn't said anything to me. I know that
probably hurts him, but uh that done. That doesn't mean
anything to me. I'm just gonna and execu and play
text football.

Speaker 7 (01:32:18):
Are Chell was uh.

Speaker 6 (01:32:19):
Emma Mosley doing before the injury? And what what do
you think people can expect from him.

Speaker 8 (01:32:25):
When he goes back.

Speaker 4 (01:32:29):
I don't really know. I don't really wanna say anything
about him.

Speaker 13 (01:32:31):

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
