Speaker 1 (00:00):
We enter our third and final hour, ready to talk
some more of football and some other topics as well.
Coming up in a few minutes. Greg Tapper, managing editor
of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, our weekly conversation with
TEP talk about some things not only that are in
his outstanding publication, but also of the statewide variety, both
(00:22):
collegiately and also the high school variety. We've been doing
a preview each week of the different classifications of high
school football in Texas, because, after all, we've pointed out
in the magazine that we gave way on the program
using the top ac feature there with the iHeartRadio app
(00:43):
that I can tell you that if you include the index,
if you include the index, the high school football section
is more than half of the magazines two hundred and
twenty eight out of four hundred pages if you include
(01:04):
the index. And there's recruiting involved in stuff like that
as well. And when we did the talkback feature contest,
we asked folks to describe what they look forward to
the most with the magazine, and the majority of folks
did say the high school section, although there were many
(01:27):
who said, you know, obviously the cover story which has
Quinn viewers and Connor Wigman Texas against Texas A and M,
with the cover story being Rivalry Reborn and all the
conference previews the smaller conference schools, the junior college in
AI Division three, Division two fcs, as well as the FBS,
(01:49):
both the Power five and non Power five varieties. It's
all there in that magazine, but a lot of it,
obviously is the high school. So we've been doing these
previews each week for the last four weeks statewide, and
we did six A a few weeks ago, and then
five A, four A, three A, and so now we're
down the two as. We'll get tep spots on that,
(02:10):
but we'll talk some college football and some other topics
as well.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (02:14):
In the NFL, Jim Harball has been in the headlines
quite a bit recently, obviously with the NCAA show cause
penalty for Harball that if he is ever to coach
at the collegiate level again, there's this four year show
(02:36):
cause thing, and it can be messy, but I think
most folks feel that he's not gonna he's probably never
going to go at the collegiate level again. Uh So
that that was all percolating then Toron Moore, the coach
at Michigan, had announced that Harball was going to serve
(02:59):
as honorary cap for the Wolverine season opener on August
thirty first, and that is one week prior to when
the Longornes go up Tan Arbor to play Michigan at
the Big House for the first time ever. They've only
played Michigan that one time in the Rose Bowl in
(03:19):
January of five, the two thousand and four season, and
Vin Chung as great as he was against USC in
the National Championship Game, he might have been better in
that Rose Bowl game against Michigan. It was amazing. Both
both performances were. And so this will be their first
meeting ever in ann Arbor when they when they get together.
(03:42):
So Sean Moore had made the announcement that Jim Harball
was going to be the honorary captain for their opener
on the thirty first against Fresno State, and that went
for less than a week and then it was announced
earlier this week. Now that's not going to happen. Harball
said he did not want to take away from the
(04:02):
twenty twenty four team by being there for that, and
Searon Moore said, yeah, he wants to concentrate on getting
the Chargers ready for the season, even though they have
an open date that weekend and won't be playing anything
that weekend. Now comes word today that Harball would like
(04:25):
to give Colin Kaepernick a job, but not as quarterback.
He wants him on his coaching staff. He told USA Today.
He said, quote, if that was ever the path he
was to take, I think that would be tremendous. He'd
be a tremendous coach if that's the path he chose.
And Harball said he reached out to Kaepernick shortly after
(04:49):
he took over the Chargers in January about him joining
him in Los Angeles in a non playing capacity, and
he said, yeah, we talked about it a little bit
about it. He's considering he was out of the country.
He said he was going to get back to me.
We haven't reconnected since then. That was early early in
the year. Kaepernick, by the way, for keeping score that
(05:09):
is now thirty six. And remember Kaepernick played for Harball,
was his quarterback when Harball coached the forty nine Ers
from twenty eleven to twenty fourteen. He's still talking about
wanting to play in the NFL. He said the Sky
Sports this Week quote, We're still training, still pushing, So
(05:31):
hopefully we've just got to get one of these team
owners to open up.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
Sky Sports Football Likegue soccer, Like what.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
Yeah, that's the international Oh yeah, British version of ESPN.
I suppose somebody, yeah, something like.
Speaker 2 (05:47):
That if his old coach who started him at quarterback
isn't willing to sign him or hire him, especially with
all the injury concerns. Justin Herbert, Yeah, Colin, it's been
eight years. It's been eight year. But it's been eight years.
I mean, like I'm all four chasing your dreams and stuff.
But at some point it's just it's not gonna happen.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
And he's thirty six. Yeah. Not that the age is
necessarily the factor. I think it's more the rust factor
that you talk about, not playing taking regular snaps in
the NFL. In every year there's more and more quarterbacks
that come out of college that, like you said, aren't rusty,
that have had plan experience that. I mean, the NFL
offenses have completely changed in the last eight years since
(06:30):
Kaepernick played an NFL game. What would you think if
if Dak Prescott got hurt in the season opener, and
then Jerry signed Colin Kaepernick.
Speaker 2 (06:40):
I mean, we have to completely change our offense. And
at that point, it's like, man, it's Trey Lance. Really
that bad? I don't know.
Speaker 1 (06:48):
There are those who believe he is. Yeah, although we
didn't look that bad against the Ring, now looks look decent.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
But I mean Cooper Rush, who I believe is four
and one, five and one as a starter. Yeah right there,
yeah yeah.
Speaker 1 (07:00):
Uh. Kaepernick also told Sky Sports he would love to
represent the United States and flag football in the twenty
twenty eight Los Angeles Olympics. So anyway, there it is.
In case you were wondering when he said, what do
he's suing the NFL? He was, but he reached an
under this closed settlement with the NFL five years ago
(07:21):
after arguing that the owners colluded to keep him out
of the league, essentially back blackballing him because of kneeling
during the national anthem. So anyway, yeah, remember how how
adamant Jerry was that his team, all of his players
were going to stand for the anthem. You remember that
I was talking about that.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
Yeah, and he took a kneel. Yeah, I believe that
is the most liked social media posts by the Dallas
Cowboys from a Dallas Cowboys like tweeter post is the
one of them all kneeling together.
Speaker 1 (07:54):
Yeah, I think you're right. All right, So there's some
NFL notes up. Next, we'll talk from Kyle's in high
school fotball. Greg Tepper, managing editor of Dave Campbell's Texas
Football Magazine, joins us next here on sports Radio AM
thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio app.
