Speaker 1 (00:00):
Craig Way alongside the producer Cameron Parker. Glad to be

(00:03):
with you and you know what we always do, like
to be here in case there are breaking stories.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
How about this? Did you see this? Tony Bennett?

Speaker 3 (00:15):
Yeah, has retired three weeks for the season starts three.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
Weeks before the start of the college basketball season. The
head coach at Virginia, Tony Bennett is retired effective immediately.
Stunning turn of events. He was at the ACC basketball
tip off last week and was trying to get the
offense you know, ramped up again after losing to Colorado

(00:40):
State in the first four. Who of course Colorado State
then went on to play Texas after that. So remember
he won the National Championship twenty nineteen, beat Texas Tech
and overtime to win the National championship. Three hundred and
sixty four career wins in a fifteen year run at Virginia. Also,
it is noteworthy that Virginia players have a thirty day

(01:01):
window to enter the transfer portal. The season opener against
Campbell is coming in less than three weeks.

Speaker 3 (01:08):
Wow, talk about I mean, there could be a lot
of factors that play there we just don't know about.
But that's going to put that basketball program in such
a bad position going forward. Now, maybe the assistant coach
steps up and they don't lose any players, but if
it's a mass exodust Craig, Oh boy, Virginia could be

(01:31):
in a lot of trouble. Yeah, a lot of trouble. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:34):
It could be a difficult season coming up for them
in the ACC. In SMU's first year in the ACC
as well. Yeah, coming up in that. So something to
keep an eye on. Will certainly see how it is
going forward. I mentioned the text line and it's there

(01:54):
for your use if you would like to avail yourself
of it free. All you have to do is text
the word texas follow by your question or comment to
eight one five three zero, and then you you do
the word texas your comment to eight one five three zero.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
Standard messaging and data rates may apply. Also.

Speaker 1 (02:19):
Also, we continue with our on air contesting if you
will using the talkback feature, which we've done many times.
So here's the talk back feature for that and an
opportunity for you to win tickets to see Tom Segura
and that's coming up February twenty second of next year.

(02:43):
So here's what you do. If you haven't already downloaded
the iHeartRadio app, you download that app and then you
search AM thirteen under the zone. You tap the red microphone,
and then you leave us a message with the keyword
that you heard on the radio. Today's keyword ball hog?
Is that something from Tom Seger? I don't know a

(03:04):
ball hoog? Okay, that's the key word today, his ball hog.
So I just know that that's that's there for it,
all right. Thursday Night NFL Football Tonight features the Denver
Broncos and the New Orleans Saints. It is a return

(03:27):
to New Orleans for Sean Payton as head coaches. They
try to get back on track after you know, they
started off well enough, including a win of the Cowboys,
and so we're saying, it's not like that win is
aging that well given given h what's happened to the
Cowboys since then.

Speaker 2 (03:47):
But that's that's part of it.

Speaker 1 (03:50):
But there is other college football action, or there's other
pro football actions we get in. There's college football, big
college foot all games this week, and here's some updated news.
Colorado is expecting Travis Hunter, their Heisman Trophy contender, to

(04:11):
be ready to go. Also, Jimmy Horn who had been
banged up, expected to be able to play. He said
Travis should play for certain, is what Dion Sanders said
on that So big game with Arizona coming up for
Colorado on that one, and Hunter had got injured in
the loss to Kansas State, so that's one thing to

(04:35):
keep in mind. Also, the Arizona State is having to
do without Sam Levit. They're outstanding quarterback who led them
to that big win theyhead over Utah, but he is
out for their game against Cincinnati, and Cincinnati's quietly starting
to emerge as a contender Ciderfield, Yeah, it's starting to

(04:55):
get it turned there a little bit.

Speaker 2 (04:58):
So that's a big, big game on Saturday.

Speaker 1 (05:02):
Another and Jeff SIPPs, who's a former starter at both
Nebraska and Georgia Tech, who competed with Levitt for the
starting job, will be the starting quarterback on Saturday.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
So that's where that is right now. Big twelve was
quietly a fun year.

Speaker 3 (05:16):
Now. I know Texas fans, you know, they're kind of
like the ex girlfriend, where's like, I don't care how
she's doing, I don't care if she's happy.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
You know, who cares?

Speaker 3 (05:25):
Big Toe's actually kind of a fun season this year, Yeah,
BYU and Iowa State both at six and oh, both
on the feet and the conference play. You have Texas Tech, who,
after a weird start to the season it felt like
Joey McGuire was on the hot seat. Well there you
have one four in a row. They're quietly five and one,
three and ozer in conference play. And then a handful
of two and one teams in the conference, including Kansas

(05:46):
State who had a big win over Colorado who's also
two and one, Arizona State you just mentioned Cincinnati, and
then West Virginia who was two and one, and I
think their fans are having fun, right, Craig, I mean
that's the sentiment. And then you have a pair rather
a trio oh in three teams. I know this is
just really going to upset Texas fans, Oklahoma State, Baylor

(06:07):
in Kansas. Remember at the beginning of the season, Craig,
we hit the ESPN Playoff projector and had Kansas in
the College Football Playoff as the two seeds. Yeah, yeah,
one in five oh and three. Don't think that's happening.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
Well, by the way of the unbeaten teams, BYU plays
neither Iowa State, North Texas Tech Tech and I we
was State playing three weeks.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
And that that obviously will be a big game.

Speaker 1 (06:39):
And the game is in Ames, and that's a marked
difference for Texas Tech, who's been really good at home,
so that game will be in Ames. Satanki was on
the hot seat going into this season too, and he's
turned it around as well. So U fun season in
the Big Twelve. And there's a chance there is a chance, folks,
depending on what happens the season with Texas that you know,
maybe they don't end up with that first round by

(07:01):
you could be welcoming BYU or Iowa State, or how.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
About this, maybe Texas Tech to de Kyarma. That would
be fun, right.

Speaker 1 (07:10):
If Texas didn't get to buy in the College Football
playoff that might seem inconceivable to some folks, it could be.
I would say that based on the scheduling, Iowa State's.

Speaker 2 (07:27):
Probably in the driver's seat.

Speaker 1 (07:29):
But they still have to play Cincinnati, they still have
to go to Utah, and they get Kansas State in
the final game of the regular season. So there's still
a lot to be sorted out in the Big Twelve conference,
let alone the SEC, the ACC and some of the
other leagues, and as we pointed out, also the the

(07:51):
the Group of five schools.

Speaker 2 (07:54):
The derby for that continues.

Speaker 1 (07:56):
Although Boise State probably is still in the league, but
I think that's because most folks are expecting both both
Army and Navy to lose to Notre Dame, and if
that happens, that would probably make the path much clearer
for for Boise State, whose only loss is to been

(08:18):
to Oregon, a very respectful loss, and they played them
really tough in that game.

Speaker 3 (08:22):
So as well, what does Notre Dame have to do
to make the playoffs?

Speaker 2 (08:26):
Just don't lose one more time.

Speaker 1 (08:28):
Gotta feel like they're probably gonna have to win out
and maybe get a little bump, a little bit of help.

Speaker 2 (08:36):
But they're not.

Speaker 3 (08:37):
They don't take away the Group of five spots. No,
they don't.

Speaker 1 (08:41):
And I think you know, we were talking about Heather Dnich,
the who really does the deep dive always into the
college football playoff, and she had on her bracket Notre
Dame out of the mix because of the the five
conference champions, the five highest rated conference champions would include

(09:06):
Boise State. But then she has it loaded up with
more SEC and Big Ten teams, so that Notre Dame
kind of gets nudged out. Has Notre Dame just on
the outside of Texas A and M just on the outside.
But there's still a lot of football. There's an entire
second half of the season ago, so there's things still
to be decided. Speaking of which, coming up next, we're

(09:28):
gonna hear from Long One, said coach Steve Sarkisi when
we continue on sports Radio AM thirteen under the zone
of the iHeartRadio app.
