Speaker 1 (00:00):
Our two of the day's program here on The Craigway
Show and Fire Me Up Friday Cameron Parker alongside Jake Herman,
and I'm always fired up when we get to visit
with our next guest from on Texas Football, CJ Fogle.
Follow him on Twitter at CJ Fogel Underscore O T Yeah,
what's up man?

Speaker 2 (00:19):
How you doing?

Speaker 1 (00:19):
Hell is the trip to Columbus, Ohio, And I'm glad
you made it back safely.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
No black guys, nothing like that.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
No, it was actually, uh well, first, it was a
very fun trip. You know, it was nice to get
a break from the hot weather down here. But uh now,
I thought it was a pretty tame weekend from the
Buckeye fans I came across so all together. You know,
I was expecting more of those Philadelphia Eagle type Polge fans.

Speaker 4 (00:42):
Maybe I was just in the wrong areas well.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
I mean, when when they lead from for most of
the game, it's probably a little bit easier than when
when you're trailing or when Finch Young Alama Suite ripped
your heart out. You know, I asked Anthony Hill on Monday,
I was like Big House or the Horseshoe and he
said horseshoe. He said he could not hear anything on
the What was your what was your relation to that?
How would you compare it to the Big House? Of course,

(01:04):
you know Texas scored pretty early in that game. The quiet,
the crowd, But big House or horseshoe for you? Because
were you at the Big House last year?

Speaker 4 (01:11):
Right?

Speaker 2 (01:12):
I believe we visited with you outside the Big House
last year? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (01:16):
Yeah, I made both trips and look both are you
know some of the best stadiums you'll find in all
the college football I'll tell you what. Loudness, you know,
stadium atmosphere all goes towards the Buckeyes campus environment.

Speaker 4 (01:30):
You know, the campus itself all goes to Michigan.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
Now, what makes a difference in terms of playing an
actual football game? I argue, you know, the stadium and
impact and the noise factor that goes to whole house. Date,
I'll tell you what you know. I've been on the
road for Texas. Came for about two and a half
years now. That fourth quarter when Texas was trying to
come back down fourteen, that was as a lout a

(01:54):
stadium I've ever heard, was that Buckeye stadium on that
fourth down stop against the Texas offense at midfield. That
was unbelievably loud. I can only imagine how loud it
was on the field for those players. And evidently there
was a communication breakdown, I would assume in large part
due to that communication and that noise.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
Yeah, that's the fourth down play the right side Brendon Baker.
That was kind of blown up on Twitter. I've heard
a lot of good takes this week. See I've read
a lot of bad takes on Twitter, and I'm sure
you have on your message boards as well.

Speaker 2 (02:26):
Talking about arches first start.

Speaker 1 (02:27):
And I think because you know, he's been in this
program for three years, we saw him make two starts
last season, I think there was probably more of an
expectation for him to play better, especially nationally, but also
I think with US Texas media as well.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
But you know, there were some points made.

Speaker 1 (02:44):
Joe Klatt, Danny Canell, two foreigner quarterbacks, talked about that
they weren't surprised that he played so bad, considering it
was his first true road start. One hundred thousand people
screaming bloody murder. You know you mentioned the communication issues.
Four new stars on offensive line, some new receivers out there.
How are you feeling about a week removed from Arch's

(03:04):
first start last week against the Waho State.

Speaker 3 (03:07):
Yeah, I think expectations are still very high for Arch
and deservedly.

Speaker 4 (03:11):
So.

Speaker 3 (03:11):
Look again, there's you know, there's talent on this Texas
offense and until it mostly gets back, I think that's
the actual conversation is how much talent is around the
Texas wide receiving unit at the moment. But again, Texas
ran the ball well. I think that offensive line altogether
really impressed and encouraged a lot of folks around the facility.
But for Arch, I think the big thing is, hey,

(03:33):
if your offensive line is going to play that well,
whether it's the run game or protecting him against Ohio
State on the on the road at Ohio State, you
need to trust that that unit, right, You need to
trust the big guys up front that they're going to
get that job done. And that was really the big
takeaway for me having watched it a few times, is
I don't think Arch really trusted his offensive line. And look,

(03:54):
I go back to that Georgia game. You know that
was the last time that we saw Arch in an
extended series or multiple snaps and you know, no one
trusted that offensive line against that Georgia front, and so
I you know, came to the idea and kind of
my you know, final takeaways that he was probably anticipating
a very similar game style from Ohio State, constant pressure
up front, not being able to really develop the routes

(04:18):
down the field and go through his progressions. He checked
down much earlier on Saturday than we ever saw on
his starts in twenty twenty four. On top of that,
you know, I thought he got a little skittish, as
evidenced by the sidearm throws, his footwork not following the
direction of the routes that he was throwing to. That
tells me that that internal clock again was entirely sped up,

(04:38):
and you know it's gonna take time. Fortunately, these three
next opportunities for the Longhorns at home will serve as
exactly what he needs to get that internal clock up
to speed and up to what he expects from those
guys up front before Texas goes on the road to Gainsville.

Speaker 1 (04:53):
Yeah, he just never looked comfortable, right, And that was
the big takeaway for me. Even the first drive, you know,
he rolls out to the I don't know it his
wingo or more cutting across the field, but you know
when you saw him getting ready to throw, you thought
fifteen yard completion. It's a throw that you know, we've
seen quin yours make a lot, and it came up
with five yards short, and to me that was an
uh oh okay. You know, either his shoulder just came

(05:17):
out of socket or maybe he has a little bit
more nerves than we thought. And I think because of
his last name, the expectations, we kind of assume, oh,
he'll be fine, he's ready for this moment, when in reality, well,
he's never been in a moment like this. He mentioned
Georgia A and M, but he had never had the
start a game like that, never had to prepare a
full season leading up to a game and obviously probably

(05:37):
the biggest season opening game I think in college football history,
especially in the modern day. You mentioned the receiver part
of it, because I've been super high in this receiver room.
There's so much talent here, incredible receiver class coming in
with Cleek Lockett, Jamie French, McCutcheon, Butler, Michael Terry, so
many guys, Emmett Mosley, but it felt like last week

(05:58):
leaving that game, does does Texas have a number one
wide receiver?

Speaker 4 (06:05):
Oh, you leave a big question there.

Speaker 3 (06:07):
Now it should be Ryan Wingo, and I think by
the end of the year it unequivocally will be DeAndre
Moore very much in that conversation as well, and I
think we were all encouraged by the playmaking ability, the
fifty to fifty catch ability of Parker Livings from vertically
down the field. That's a solid basis. Now you're going
to need someone else to join that group. But to
your question, you know who is that wide receiver one?

(06:30):
It was Ryan Wingo on Saturday a week ago. You know,
Texas tried what they could to get Ryan Wingo the ball,
and I know that you look at the stat sheet
and he said.

Speaker 4 (06:37):
Well, they didn't do a good job.

Speaker 3 (06:38):
It was like, well, yeah, no one on the offensive
side of the ball really did a good job against
the Buck guys on.

Speaker 4 (06:43):
The season opener.

Speaker 3 (06:44):
But the way that plays are designed, the way that
Arch is looking for his reads primarily to Ryan Wingo,
He's going to be the guy that sees the bulk
of you know, those pass attempts from March manning the
big thing for me, who becomes a guy that Texas
can dump down a screen to and create ten to
fifteen yards after the catch, because we know that they

(07:05):
have the physical size required on the outside to spur
guys loose. But is there a guy that can create
tackles for a lot or misstackles forced as we've talked about.
You know, we saw the you know, the little dump
downs to CJ. Bax are out of the back though.
That's great, but a year ago with Jay and Blue,
those are extended plays that are going for twenty thirty yards.

Speaker 4 (07:24):
So that's my big question.

Speaker 3 (07:26):
Who can create with the ball in their hands versus
who ultimately becomes the guy that catches a lot of passes.

Speaker 4 (07:31):
I think those two answers are a whole lot different
at the moment.

Speaker 1 (07:34):
Yeah, we've seen what Sart can do with guys with
speed and space. You know, you mentioned Jaden Blue, who
is fantastic at it.

Speaker 2 (07:41):
Xavier Worthy.

Speaker 1 (07:42):
You know, I think a lot of Redstone issues were
solid because Xavier Worthy was so quick that that cornerbacks
just weren't going to be able to defend him one
on one in the red area. Okay, you mentioned the
offensive line, and this might be the answer to this question.
But you know, we've had all the negative talk. Let's
find some positive talk here. What was a a player
or positional group that you left Saturday going, oh, okay,

(08:05):
I feel much better about this player or this group
going throughout the rest of the season.

Speaker 2 (08:09):
And why is it? Probably?

Speaker 3 (08:10):
Look, I'll start, I'll start with that offensive line. No
rush attempts resulted in negative yards. Now, there was a
few obviously that resulted in zero you know, all of
a few of which were on those QB snakes that
ended up not you know, fair andwell for the Longhorns there,
but you know, only one and a half sacks, only

(08:30):
lost about three yards on those two plays. I thought
Texas is an offensive line up front did a great
job on the road.

Speaker 4 (08:37):
Again, the miscommunication that hurt.

Speaker 3 (08:39):
I think now you're kind of getting a sense of
how important communication will be, especially when you go to Gainsville,
when you go to Athens later on this season. But
that unit was really impressive, as well as the defensive line. Now,
I thought that that Texas would have enough talent there.
How quickly would they get up to speed to kind
of mirror that of what we saw in twenty three
and twenty four.

Speaker 4 (08:58):
Well, the answers there.

Speaker 3 (08:59):
You know, Texas had five or six guys that they
can roll through deeply at that defensive line spot and
see consistent play all the way throughout.

Speaker 1 (09:07):
Yeah, I think you know, because this year it was
kind of going in like okay man, you know, Texas
is replacing a lot of big guys up front on
the defensive front. I think now we just got to
give Kenny Baker the benef of the doubt because it
doesn't matter they have seven new transfers coming in. That
d line looked just as good as it did last
season against a real good Ohio State offense.

Speaker 4 (09:27):
Truly it did.

Speaker 3 (09:28):
And you know, again, I know a lot of folks
are going to look at the pass rush and say, well,
where was the pass rush? Ohio State didn't give Texas
a lot of opportunity to throw to really pin their
ears back and rush the quarterback. But what they did
do is give them a plenty of opportunities to see
how they fit up in the run game and for
the longest rush of the day to be eight yards.

Speaker 4 (09:47):
Sign me off.

Speaker 1 (09:48):
I approve heading into this game against the Jose State
where there's gonna be ample opportunity this week and the
next three weeks for a lot of guys, including arts Manning,
to get some reps, including guys who did not play
against o Hoho State. I thought Sark, you know, kept
it pretty tight in terms of rotation. I think when
he saw one freshman receiver it was McCutcheon and he

(10:09):
said a Monday that the next guy up would have
been Ryan Niblett offensively and defensively. Who are some of
the younger guys or guys who do not play against
Ohio State that you're looking forward to seeing tomorrow in
these next three weeks, get some more reps before conference
play begins.

Speaker 3 (10:22):
Yeah, I'll start running back because I think that's a
really intriguing position.

Speaker 4 (10:26):
We only saw two backs on the field in Columbus.
If c J.

Speaker 3 (10:28):
Baxheer was Trey Weisner, it's kind of what you expected
coming into this big game. But Christian Clark is that
next guy for me at that position, and if he
really emerges as somebody that the staff can trust, not
only is he a threat out of the backfield in
the passing game, but he allows Texas to get very
multiple should they go into twenty twenty one twenty two
personnel with two running backs on the field, something that
they did not do on the road in Columbus. So

(10:51):
he's the one guy offensively I'm excited for, especially if
Texas starts to really pivot its personality and identity offensively
to a pound and ground game with arch maning and
really benefiting from play action Defensively, it's Jeneral Williams, and
you know, it's how could it not be? You know,
we saw how much of an impact he had on
the diamond. Now on the grid iron, where he's probably

(11:13):
a more natural playmaker. If he gets into that rotation
and becomes a guy that Texas can rely on, it's
going to be very difficult for him to not see
the feel consistently and very often even in sec play.

Speaker 2 (11:26):
Talking with CJ.

Speaker 1 (11:27):
Vogel from on Texas Football, is Jonah the one guy
you get asked the most about on y'all's live streams
and message boards?

Speaker 3 (11:36):
Williams he's got to be And there's such in a
lower to him. You know, it's a five star two
sport freak out.

Speaker 4 (11:41):
Where is he?

Speaker 3 (11:41):
When can we see him? Folks want to get eyes
on him, and hopefully it's this weekend.

Speaker 1 (11:46):
What was your your season prediction before Ohio State and
has it changed it all after the loss?

Speaker 4 (11:53):
Yeah, I had eleven to one originally lost to Georgia
in Georgia.

Speaker 3 (11:56):
And look, I still want to sit there and say
that it's going to be a ten and two lost
to Georgia, but Texas needs to prove that over the
next three weeks. And again, I know that it's not
against great competition, but at least check the boxes and
have me sit back and say, Okay, what maybe didn't
show up on the road in Columbus has been remedied.
We've seen the bright spots, We've seen the step taken

(12:19):
on both sides of the football. Defensively, I thought Texas
was well ahead of the offense. Obviously, I don't need
to really go into too much depth there, but ten
and two I think Texas right now. And for Sarkeisians specifically,
it's not so much a talent issue, but it's a
coaching matchup issue. I think Kirby smart with the way
that he kind of schematically goes about playing a Sarkisian offense.

(12:42):
It's more problematic for Texas there than it is from
a talent perspective.

Speaker 2 (12:46):
Yeah, I had eleven to one.

Speaker 1 (12:47):
Also, I think what that loss maybe with the floor
was a little bit lower for me now, maybe nine
to three because if Arch was routed against Ohio State,
you know Gainesville, if Florida can find a way to
be undefeated going to that game, that's going to an
insane environment. And also Athens as well Georgia. Kirby Smart
might just have sarks number here. What you think of LSU,

(13:11):
the win, Garrett neus Meyer, and then also Alabama's loss
because you know week one there's going to be overreactions.
But I'm just curious that maybe that changed your perception
of the SEC and how it plays out now because
after Week one, I think the biggest riser was LSU
and Garrett Nusmeyer in terms of the national perception and
a lot of people now picking them the best team
in the country and the win the SEC.

Speaker 4 (13:32):
Yeah, I'll start with LSU first off.

Speaker 3 (13:35):
If that defense is legitimate, that's a big threat to
all of the SEC. Again, No Smayer, being a veteran guy,
having seen as much time in college football as he has,
he's going to perform well on the big stage. We
know that LSU has talent around him, and they have
talent in the backfield alongside him, especially Kayden during I'm
a big fan of his speed.

Speaker 4 (13:55):
But if that defense is.

Speaker 3 (13:57):
Legit, and it looked to be just that at Clemson,
that's a big, big threat for the Georgias, the Texas
and the Alabama's who look, I just planted a flower
on their grave at the beginning of the week.

Speaker 4 (14:09):
I think they're done, you know.

Speaker 3 (14:11):
And that was a team I predicted to go to
the SEC Championship to face Texas earlier on in August.
So I don't see the Alabama physicality. I don't see
the toughness that was a staple under Nick Saban. And
if that's the case, how do you then get that
mentality back? Having lost your season opener in such embarrassing fashion,
that's a tough, slippery slope if you're Alabama to tread,

(14:34):
and right now, I don't think that they make it
to the top of the hill.

Speaker 4 (14:36):
I think that's a dangerous.

Speaker 3 (14:38):
Season ahead of them unless someone in that locker room
kind of takes the reins.

Speaker 4 (14:42):
And it's not gonna be Caitlin to Boor.

Speaker 3 (14:44):
It's gotta be someone player led and say, hey, this
is not the Alabama standard, So I'm buying LSU selling Alabama.

Speaker 4 (14:51):
Ultimately.

Speaker 3 (14:53):
I think that's something I didn't expect coming into twenty
twenty five.

Speaker 4 (14:57):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (14:57):
I think Caden Productor gave up six hurries that game,
which is just insane because he's he could possibly be
a first round traff pick.

Speaker 2 (15:05):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (15:06):
Last thing for you was last night's Cowboys lost the
most obvious loss in NFL history.

Speaker 2 (15:13):
Liked, did you at any point think Dallas is going
to win that game?

Speaker 3 (15:17):
No, until the field goal right before half, cause you stayed,
you know, one to one in terms of scoring. And
I say that I didn't expect the Cowboys to get
a stop all evening. Evidently that second half that came
out and they were fantastic, but they can't.

Speaker 4 (15:34):
They went into halftime down to one.

Speaker 3 (15:36):
I said, okay, you're on part because they haven't looked
like they've been able to stop the Cowboy offense either.
Now it's basically a race to who gets the next stop,
and then turn it turned into who got the next
score that won the football game.

Speaker 4 (15:50):
Cam.

Speaker 3 (15:50):
That was the ultimate worst case for me as someone
who watches the Cowboys because I came in, we've talked
about this. I did not want to have any expectations
for this Cowboys season. I just to go with the flow.
I'll watch the games, I'll root for them if they win.
But ultimately the expectations were in the dirt. And now
I'm sitting around saying, wow, that was a pretty.

Speaker 4 (16:08):
Darn good game. You know, they look good when they
had Kenny Clark on the field.

Speaker 3 (16:11):
They had some lockdown cornerbacks, they didn't allow the exposive
to play outside of the one they bottled up Saquon Barkley.
And now I'm here sitting here thinking, you know what,
maybe they got a team. Maybe I'm got my expectations
rising again. And that's a dangerous spot to.

Speaker 1 (16:24):
Be in, this Cowboy It's exactly what Jerry Jones wants
you to think.

Speaker 4 (16:28):
Is that.

Speaker 2 (16:28):
Okay?

Speaker 1 (16:29):
You know what I'm back in. I told people today,
just don't fall for it, don't I took the bay.

Speaker 3 (16:35):
I'm like the SpongeBob character getting, you know, playing with
the hook. And the next thing you see is I'm
going all the way up to the surface because I've
been caught.

Speaker 4 (16:42):
They got me.

Speaker 1 (16:43):
Cjvogal, thanks much of the time, brother, Thanks for stopping by.
Tell the folks where they can watch and listen and
read you today in the world before San Jizois State
