for our second year together live from Bevo Boulevard. And
I think the countdown is in what fifty nine days
away from kickoff? To double check that, but we are
getting closer and closer to that single digit mark and
we cannot wait for Texas Ohio State August thirty, first
big noon kickoff in the Shoe in the get closer
(03:13):
and closer more preview contact. Coming a lot more Arch
Manning discourse today. We cannot get enough Arch right, Well,
I know we're super excited to see him finally be
the starting quarterback throughout the season. This past weekend was
the Manning Passing Academy. We had cjfo go on last
(03:33):
Friday live from that event to talk about it. We
played some media availabilities from Arch there. Well, up next,
we're gonna have Chris Gordy from Houston join us live
from Sports Talk seven ninety in Houston. He was actually
out there talk with Arch Manning as well as some
other top quarterbacks. Get his thoughts on the weekend on
(03:54):
Arch on the SEC and we we'll even talk a
little Houston Rockets, who continue to just make excellent moves
in the offseason. We will also hear from Todd mcshae
Tom mcshae NFL Draft Insider, he has the mcshaye show.
He actually helps put together the event with the Manning
Passing Academy, and on his latest podcast he talked about
(04:20):
Arch Manning and had some really good thoughts that I
will play throughout today's show. Also going to hear from
his uncle Peyton Manning. He went on the Pat mcaveee show.
I think earlier today talked about Arch, So if you're
sick of Arch Manning talk, I'm sorry, maybe tune in
a little bit later on throughout the program because we
will talk a little NBA free agency as well. And
also Roylan Gobrie from the Round Rock Express Triple a
(04:41):
broadcaster for the Express of course, the Triple affiliate with
the Texas Rangers, will stop by four o'clock hour talk
a little baseball with him, his thoughts on the Rangers,
Jack Leider, Kumar Rocker, Evan Carter, Wyatt Langford, all those guys.
As the Express have just begun their second half of
the season, currently five and two, tied for first place
(05:04):
in the PCL and have a big series this week
against the sugar Land Space Cowboys, So a lot to
get into. Of course, if you want to be able
to join the program, we'd love to hear from you
on the text line texta where Texas to eight one
to five three es are followed by your message. We'd
love to hear your input. And if you're watching us
(05:25):
on our livestream whether it's YouTube, Facebook, or Twitter, feel
free to leave a comment. We'd love to hear from
you guys and get your input here. As we get
closer and closer to football season, let's begin a little
bit of Texas football talk. And he actually here from
Peyton Manning. So he was on the Pat McAfee show,
(05:46):
Love or Hate Pat McFee. He does get great guests
and was able to get Peyton Manning, NFL MVP of
the two time MVP winner, two time Super Bowl champion
with the Indianapolis Cult in the Denver Broncos, and of
course the uncle do Arch Manning. And you know, we
talked about Bruce Heltman's piece in the Athletic talking with Cooper,
(06:10):
and you know they mentioned that, Hey, you know it's
Peyton and Eli really have not been involved as much
as you think they have. It's it's not like every
time Arch drops back the throw, he's set in the
text of Peyton asking him for input on this, and
that I think maybe a little bit was just overblown
because of his last name and just thinking, oh, he's
(06:31):
a Manning, oh man, think about all the help he
gets from Peyton. Eli turns out and you know, not
really surprised. It is Cooper Manning's kid, and it's you know,
been much of Cooper Manning, who has helped him develop
and progress as a college football player and has helped him,
you know, develop that love of the game. And you know,
we see Cooper's athleticism, you know, with Arch throughout the season.
(06:55):
We both we all know here that Peyton Eli were
not scrambling quarterbacks. So they had the run last season
against Wizzy Louisiana Monroesa. Right, then that's Cooper, that's Cooper Manning.
But a lot more of it is Cooper, and I
think a lot more than what the national media in
your casual college football fans probably thought.
Speaker 2 (07:15):
So.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
So this is Peyton Manning earlier today on the Pat
mcife Show in ESPN, talking about Arch Manning's development after
the Manning passing Academy this past weekend.
Speaker 3 (07:26):
Look, Eli Iris Uncles. We try to be there as
a resource forum. But you know, Cooper has done a
great job with Arch and they've handled, you know, all
the different things that have kind of come their way
in the right way. And I'm excited to watch Arch play.
He's been very patient. I thought he threw the ball
really well at the camp. He and Garrett dusch Meyer
(07:47):
and the kind of our three throwing exhibitions really threw
the ball well. All the quarterbacks though it. Well, it's impressive.
I mean they make throws that I wouldn't even think
about making. I mean, Archs made the throw the other
day that cut off Man to the actual receiver and
Nusmyer Leonoris for South Carolina. I mean, it's impressive all
(08:10):
the way around. But look, he's been patient. You know,
it's been well documented. The fact that he's you know,
been there two years. I'm such a believer in mastering
the system that you're in and when you have new
coordinators every single year in the NFL or college, that's
just frustrating to me. I was lucky, you know, Tom Moore,
Pat was there my entire fourteen year, fourteen year career.
(08:33):
Belichick gave Brady some different coordinators, Charlie Weissman, Daniels O'Brien,
but it was the same system. Right Nick Saban makes
his quarterbacks. Our new coordinators learned his system. So it
is Kirby And so the fact that Sarkesian calls the
plays and Art has.
Speaker 4 (08:48):
Been there two years already is.
Speaker 3 (08:50):
Going to know the system. That's going to be a
huge advantage for him. And I'm looking forward to seeing
him getting out there on the field. He's worked real hard.
I love seeing him going to that camp for his teammate.
That's being a good teammate. That's being a good wing man.
And I'm excited to get down there and watch a
few games this year in Austin.
Speaker 5 (09:05):
I love the moxie he's got too, the breaking of
chains after running somebody, and I think he got concussed.
I mean, you don't have to give us anything. I
think he got concussed in the U s that.
Speaker 3 (09:17):
The moxie, I mean that that was that was his dad.
I mean, Cooper was a cocky wide receiver that was
open every time in the huddle. As you can imagine.
Speaker 6 (09:27):
That means.
Speaker 3 (09:27):
I think my sophomore year in high school, I was
Cooper was a senior.
Speaker 4 (09:31):
I think I completed one hundred and twenty past.
Speaker 3 (09:33):
That you got through ninety of them to my brother, okay,
and and he would have liked all one hundred and twenty.
I mean, he did not care about his teammates or
his friends. I think I think that, I think that
little little slagger comes from his dad, and that's good
to see. Look, Arch has got to be his own
person and he can't move. Yeah, my dad's sort of
(09:54):
speed sort of skipped the generation, skipped me and Eli,
and I think arch Arch as that which helps him.
But I still think with all quarterbacks, I mean, we
got to be able to throw from the pocket first
and throw it on time and not take a lot
of hits. That's what we talked about to all of them. Hey,
know your system, know your answers. But then much's time
(10:14):
to make him play. Go out there and make him
play with your legs. But so I think he understands that.
Speaker 1 (10:18):
We'll hear more from Peyton Manning talking about Arch Manning
and his takeaways from the Manning Passing Academy this past
weekend throughout today's show. Twenty nine years of the Manning
Passing Academy. Someone that was there last weekend in person
and I actually got the visit with Arch Manning. Chris
Gordy from Sports Talk seven to ninety in Houston, Texas.
(10:39):
He's joining up up next his thoughts on Texas football
in twenty twenty five, the Houston Rockets and Arch Manning
here as the Craigway Show on the Wednesday. On this Wednesday,
just getting started here on the Free iHeart radio app
and I'm excited to finally be able to sit down
and talk with Chris Gordy from Sports Talk seven ninety
(11:01):
in Houston. You can hear them on the Lockdown Network
with a Lockdown SEC podcast, and you can hear them
pregame with the Houston Astros. Chris Gordy, I appreciate you
taking us some time. I'm glad we can finally do this.
Oh yeah, I definitely cam. We're getting that calendars in July.
Now football is getting that much closer. Yeah, under sixty
days now until kickoff for Texas football. And you were
(11:23):
around QB one for Texas's past. We get the Manning
Passing Academy in Thibodeau, Louisiana. I heard it was hot,
I heard it was humid. I heard it was muggy,
which just sounds like Louisiana. But how is the weekend
down to the Manning Passing Academy and get let's get
your thoughts on some takeaways being around some of the
best quarterbacks in college football.
Speaker 7 (11:44):
Yeah, I think this was like my fifth or sixth
trip down there. I just I love getting down there
because it's it's fun to see these quarterbacks and an
element of them having to be the coaches right, Like
it's different, you know from we see them on college
campus and they're the ones being coached. But this is
an environment where they're throwing into being a leader. And
it was interesting seeing guys over the years like Anthony
(12:04):
Richardson and Drake May and guys like that where they're
you know, huddling in new kids every twenty thirty minutes
and you're having to go all right, here, here's what
we're doing. Guys welcome in all that kind of stuff.
So really cool environment the Mannings have. Obviously they're the
first family of football we call them, you know, the
generations from Archie to Eli and Peyton Cooper are now
(12:25):
art So cool to see all them together. But I
just continue to be wowed cam on how mature arch is.
Speaker 2 (12:32):
I mean, obviously they raised him the right way.
Speaker 7 (12:35):
You know, there was a good story in the Athletic
Class week basically talking about how you know they raised
them where the kids' phones you know, got charged in
mom and Dad's room where they didn't have them in
their bed overnight, and you know, just little things like
that where you you we know it all, but it
just reaffirms Arch was raised the right way. He's got
a great head on his shoulders. He's mature beyond his years.
You know, interviewed him as a freshman, and you know,
(12:57):
just wowed by him. The freshman don't talk like that.
He's just he gets it, is how I describe it.
And so, yeah, man, just a mob scene for him
this year. Though I was able to actually get a
few questions into him last year, this year it was
like fifteen media members deep just trying to get in
to get a question to him. So that just gives
you an idea of the attention he's getting. And now
(13:18):
you start to see all these preseason watch lists and
Heisman watch lists and all this stuff, and you almost
have to pump the brakes if you're a Texas fan
and go, whoa, whoa, let's not put the cart before
the horse here. He's still got to go play well,
he's got to earn it and all this kind of stuff.
But it's hard not to get excited when you know
you have a manning you know, DNA on your roster
and the high expectations and a program that is coming
(13:41):
off of back to back playoff appearances. Sark's got this
the train on the on the right track, and the
hope is that Arch can take him to the next level.
But it was cool to talk with him and certainly
get to talk to some of the other SEC quarterbacks.
I like John Mattier a lot at Oklahoma comorre from
Washington State. I think he's going to be really good.
Austin Simmons I was very oppressed with. He's going to
be the new ole Miss quarterback taken over for Jackson Dart.
(14:04):
He seems to be very, very mature and ready to
take the reins. Obviously, Garrett nus Meyer, the loan returning
four thousand yard passer in college football at LSU, expectations
race for them. They're hoping to be a playoff team
this year. And then you know a few other guys
that were there, Taylor Green at Arkansas, they're like as
the least talked about quarterback in the SEC, A guy
that was very good last year in the Bobby Patrino offense.
(14:26):
If he can take that next step forward and clean
up his mistake to the turnovers, I think Arkansas could.
Speaker 2 (14:31):
Pull off some upsets and surprise some people.
Speaker 7 (14:33):
So really cool to be out there, really cool to
see those guys in that element. And I think, as
Peyton said in their intro pressor last year, on opening
day of the NFL, twenty five of the thirty two
starting quarterbacks in the NFL had previously been camp counselors
at the Manning Passing Academy. It just shows there's a
little something about the leadership skills and the qualities it
(14:53):
takes to be a camp counselor out there, as opposed
to you know, the guy a decade ago, Johnny Manzel,
who slept in and you know, was late coming to
the camp. So just kind of shows you the category
of good, good quarterbacks they have out there.
Speaker 1 (15:06):
Before we talk a little bit more Texas football, you
brought up Garrett nus Meyer and LSU entering I think
the fourth year under Brian Kelly. Obviously LSU a fantastic
football program, high expectations in an interesting spot, Gordy, because
you know they have not made the College Football Playoff
yet under Brian Kelly. Of course, they made the SEC
champions with the first year, kind of got steamrolled by
(15:28):
Georgia in that title game. Maybe at disappointing your last season,
but again, you know, a young quarterback with nuss Meyer,
he returns back. What is the expectations in Baton Rouge
this season for LSU. Of course, the expanded playoff will
help that, but what do you think realistically, realistically LSU
was looking for this season and can Neusmeyer end up
(15:50):
being a top two, top three quarterback in the country
not just the conference?
Speaker 7 (15:55):
Yeah, to me, it's it's the playoff for bost You know,
you look at last year. I was at that game
in Las Vegas Week one against USC. The third courter ended.
USC fans were leaving like they were convinced LSU's gonna
win this game, and yet somehow they let that game
slip away and they started oh to one. And they've
done it three straight years under Brian Kelly. They started
oh to one to start their season. They opened at
(16:17):
Clemson this year, one of the toughest road environments. I
think Texas and LGU have two of the toughest games
right out of the gate, Texas at Ohio State and
LSU at Clemson. But to me, I think Texas can
lose at Ohio State and still win the SEC and
still make the playoff. I don't think LSU can lose
to Clemson and still make the playoff because basically it
(16:37):
only gives you one more loss the rest of the way.
Speaker 2 (16:40):
You know, Look, they were up on A and M, you.
Speaker 7 (16:42):
Know, through two and a half three quarters last year
and let that game slip away Alabama game, they got
blown out in Florida. They let that game kind of
get away from them in the third quarter. So I
say all that to say they were right there. I mean,
they were this close to being ten and two last
year and being a playoff team. I think this year
they must be the playoff. If you look at the
last three LSU head coaches by year four, all three
(17:04):
of those guys had either played for or won a
national championship, and that was Nick Saban, Les Miles, and
head oser on Brian Kelly. The pressure is on him.
He said he left Notre Dame to go to LSU
to win a championship. Well, coincidentally, Notre Dame just played
for a championship without him, So Notre Dame seems to
be Ryan Hiardar Markers Freeman. Now it's time for LSU
and Brian Kelly to take that next step. And to me,
(17:25):
I think LSU fans are realistic. They don't think they're
gonna win the championship every year like Alabama fans do.
They just want to every four to five years be
playing for one and winning a championship. And I think
you know the bill collector's coming for Brian Kelly. You
paid all this money for him. It's time to put
up for shut up. They signed the number one portal
class in the country. He had another top ten recruiting class.
It's time to go win this thing and at least
(17:47):
make the playoff. If he does not make the playoff,
there's gonna be a lot of people call for Brian
Kelly's heading.
Speaker 2 (17:52):
Bat Merge.
Speaker 1 (17:53):
They may have the toughest schedule in the SEC overall me.
You mentioned playing at Clemson one. You have Florida Week three.
Florida team that I think is going to be really
underrated this year with DJ Lagway he can stay healthy.
You're at Ole Miss, you got South Carolina coming into
Baton Rouge. Of course, the games the A and M
have always been produced fireworks. You're at Alabama this year,
(18:15):
and then you have Arkansas the next week, and then
you end in Norman and Oklahoma. And remember what happened
last season with Alabama losing to Oklahoma, not just losing
in Oklahoma, getting absolutely boat race. So is this the
toughest schedule you think in the SEC? Or do you
think maybe a program like Texas who has to play
a Wow State week one at Florida at Georgia may
(18:35):
have a little bit more tougher.
Speaker 2 (18:37):
Well.
Speaker 7 (18:37):
Phil Steele, he put out his rankings. He's got Mississippi
State as the hardest, and it makes sense. I mean,
they're bad, and they play a lot of good teams,
including Arizona State in their non conference, who was just
a playoff team. Arkansas, I think is right up there.
They just always get luck of the draw. Just a
tough schedule. He has South Carolina as the third toughest schedule,
and obviously they play Clemson in their non conference, so
(18:59):
I think those three kind of the toughest. I could
kind of go on the other side for LSU. You
talk about it being a tough schedule. I look at
it this way. You get Florida in week three at home.
The hope is you you're playing better than DJ Lagway
is at that point, and if they go on the
road and beat Clemson week one, I think you're gonna
have all the confidence in the world to take out.
Speaker 2 (19:16):
Of Florida team.
Speaker 7 (19:17):
In Week three, you go too Ole Miss, where you've
lost the last two trips there. But the good news
is Jackson Dart's gone. They're working in the new quarterback
in Austin Simmons. You get South Carolina at home. You
won at South Carolina last year. You get A and
M at home, which Longhorn fans will love to hear this.
They are winless in Death Valley since they have joined
the sec A, and M has never beaten LSU in
(19:37):
the Death Valley in bat Rouge since they joined the conference.
At Bama is almost like you can just go and
pencil the LA in there. I know it's not the
Nick Saban Alabama. It's just tough to win in Tuscalosa.
It just is things don't go right there. I think
you hit on it that last game against Oklahoma. I
could see a world where what a FELASU is nine
to two and they have to go win in order
to make the playoff. I mean, you talk about pressure man.
(19:59):
That would be really, really tough for Brian Kelly. Good
news again, they beat Oklahoma this past year at home
in Baton ruers. But granted this is a new dog
with John Mattira quarterback, but certainly again, like you said,
pressures on them, but toughest schedule. I would probably lean
more towards in Arkansas. I just think it's a really,
really tough road for a team like that.
Speaker 1 (20:19):
Two weeks time, we will be in Atlanta, Georgia together
for the SEC Media Days, and a little sneak PreK
here with you, Gordy. If you're putting together your preseason
poll for the SEC. I'm not going to make you
do all sixteen teams here, but give me your top
your top six if you're ranking them right now preseason,
your top six SEC teams heading into the SEC Media
(20:41):
Days here in a few weeks.
Speaker 7 (20:43):
Yeah, I think heavy is the crown for Georgia. I
mean I looked at their schedule today. I mean their
non conference as a joke. I know part of that
was they were originally supposed to play Oklahoma, and then
when Oklahoma was coming into the conference, Greg Sankie said,
all right, take them off as your non conference because
they're coming to the conference. So they replaced it with Marsha.
Georgia gets Marshall to open up the season, then Austin
p Like I think Kirby smart that rosters loaded once
(21:06):
again with five stars up and down the roster. I
think George is the preseason favored again. I think Texas
is right there. I mean, I hate to go chalk,
but it feels like it feels like most people are
gonna say consensus, Georgia and Texas one and two, and
then to me, Alabama and Elo show the two wild cards, right, like,
what do they look like? I think they should be
probably three and four, just based on expectations, because, like
(21:27):
I said, Brian Kelly can't afford to miss the playoff.
I think Kaitlin de Boor can't afford to miss the playoff.
He just went nine and four and lost to Vanderbilt
and Oklahoma in year one. A lot of BATA fans
are going, Okay, look post Saban, we knew it.
Speaker 2 (21:39):
Was gonna be a little bit of heartburn.
Speaker 7 (21:40):
But if he goes four losses again in year two, god,
they're gonna be talking buyout money already for Kaylin to
bor after just two years. So I think the Boor
has pressure. Alabama has to make the playoff this year
as well. Those are kind of the top four. I
would say, I think South Carolina and Florida are really good,
But to me, it's the schedule are just brutal. So
(22:01):
I just I put them kind of in that next tier.
I think we'll miss their schedules easy. Again, if Austin
Simmons lives up to what he's supposed to be, it
wouldn't it be funny if Lane Tiffin misses the playoff
the two years with Jackson Dark, but then the next
year with Austin Simmons makes the playoff at ten and two.
I think that's a possibility. But then you kind of
just have this log jamble, like what is Auburn? What
(22:21):
is Missouri going to be with Bo Prabula coming in?
What's Tennessee with Joey Aguilar? Right, everybody agreed it was
the right move to move off from Nicoe Amalaiava, but
if they lose five six games this year, everybody's gonna
be calling for Hey, Josh Iipe, what the hell.
Speaker 2 (22:33):
Were you thinking?
Speaker 6 (22:34):
You know?
Speaker 7 (22:34):
So, I think that one is interesting, but you know,
we'll see you at A and m IS. I like
where elcoing them we're heading, you know, mid season last
year leading the SEC and then they fell apart down
the stretch last year. I do think their run attack
is going to be awesome with Levi and Moss back
and Amari Daniels, with rubinoens back healthy, so a and
I'm probably in that eight to nine win category. But
(22:55):
to me, it's really just that that top four sector
of Georgia, Texas, LSU, and Alabama, and then I think
it's everybody else.
Speaker 1 (23:04):
What are some storylines you're watching for in the SEC
Media days?
Speaker 7 (23:09):
Yeah, I mean, obviously we're still as we're recording this.
The SEC is not announced to what players are attending,
so I think that's a big part of it. At
Texas brings arch I mean, get ready for arch Mania.
I was at media days when Johnny Manziel went, it
was a mad house. I was at Media Days when
Tim Tebow was there. It was a mad house.
Speaker 2 (23:27):
Like it or not. The Manning name just.
Speaker 7 (23:29):
Brings fanboys and fandom, and you're gonna have a lot
of that.
Speaker 2 (23:32):
And so Sark's gonna have a he's.
Speaker 7 (23:34):
Gonna have to put the wall up, and hey, it's
about the team, it's about the big picture and all
this kind of stuff. But that's what everybody's gonna want
is is talk about arch arch arch and that sort
of thing. But outside of that, I think, you know,
the big storylines are all going to be there. A
lot of coaches are going to have their thoughts on
the future of a nine game conference schedule, the future
of an expanded playoff, what is nil uh? You know
(23:55):
Brett Bielma was already out there last week at Illinois
talking about tampering. I'm sure we're going to get maybe
Neli Drinkwitz or somebody like that, you know, voicing an
opinion on well, we got other coaches reaching out to
our players before they even after the portal. Yeah, it happens.
Welcome to college football in twenty twenty five. This is
where we live. So I think you're gonna get a
lot of those story lines. I mean, put it this way, Cam,
it won't be a boring SEC media days.
Speaker 1 (24:17):
There's gonna be a ton of stuff going on. I'm
looking forward to it. The College Football Hall of Fame again.
We're gonna have coverage right here on thirteen hundred the
Zone all week long July fourteenth through the seventeenth. I'll
be out there with Craig Way and Mike carg and
I know Gordy ab out there well, but make sure
you come on the show with us at least one
day throughout the week talking with Chris Gordy from Sports
Talk seven ninety in Houston and Lockdown SEC podcast. Okay,
(24:38):
let's pivot to the NBA, where your hometown Houston Rockets
have not missed this entire offseason. I think if you
were grading the Houston Rockets, I think it's an A plus.
Went out and got Kevin Durant, traded Jalen Green obviously
to the Phoenix Suns, and then the additional moves bringing
in Clint Compella, who probably could start for ten other teams.
(25:02):
Is your third string center. You extended Steven Adams and
then Dory and Vinnie Smith. It will to steal him
away from the Los Angeles Lakers. Still trying to figure
out what Rob Blink is doing out there in LA.
But overall, at least in from my point, Gordie, I
think the Houston Rockets have had a perfect offseason and
are firmly in that number two team behind OKC heading
into next season.
Speaker 2 (25:23):
Yeah, they're absolutely right.
Speaker 7 (25:24):
I mean, this rebuild has been long, but it's been
a great rebuild and man did they luck out. And
Kimmy Mayo Doka as a head coach a couple of
years ago, guys just a winner at Stress's strong, heavy defense.
Speaker 2 (25:37):
They became such a good defensive team.
Speaker 7 (25:39):
Last year and some of these young pieces of blossom,
and the decision to move off from Jalen Green after
four years, I think they kind of looked at and said,
he became a very good player, but not an All
Star caliber player. That's where you kind of hope a
guy is by year four. Take Tyrese Halliburton, for example.
By year four in Indiana, he was an All Star.
So I think they kind of said, look, we could
(25:59):
stick with Jay and he's going to be very good,
but let's make this move for Kevin Durant. Obviously, Durant's
thirty seven, he's done have many elite years left in him.
But if they can get one to two elite years
still out of him, that's what they needed they needed
to score. I mean that series that they pushed Golden
State to seven games in they could have closed out
with the Kevin Durant, a guy who could just go
(26:20):
get buckets, can go fill it up, and that's what
Durant's gonna be asked to do for this team. And
so I really like the team that they've assembled here.
You mentioned Phinney Smith. I mean, he's got forty one
percent from three last year, so it's like they filled
in all the holes of what they were missing and
if they can still play that elite defense while guys
like I'm and Thompson take that next step in their career.
Alprin Chagoon was just the first time All Star. He's
(26:42):
going to the build off of that. I just you
got to love what they got around him. And again,
they were the two seeds in the West last year.
What's to stop them from being the two seed again
and maybe knocking on the door of maybe catching up
to what OKAC is right now.
Speaker 2 (26:55):
So it's gonna be a lot of fun.
Speaker 6 (26:56):
Man.
Speaker 7 (26:57):
I can't wait to kd back in the state of Texas,
and I know a lot of Longhorn fans are excited
to see what he does with the Rockets.
Speaker 1 (27:04):
Yeah, and they also able to restructure Fred van Leiet's
contract extended, Jabari Smith and bringing in Finney Smith and
Katie Those are guys with a lot of obviously playoff experience,
but also can provide some sort of mentorship to the
young young guys. I know, we don't think of Katie
as being a mentor, but I think Jabari Smith can definitely,
you know, learn a lot from Katie. And I think
(27:25):
guys like a Men Thompson and Tari Easton can learn
from Finny Smith. And there's so much depth. We just saw, okay,
see in Indiana play in the finals. You know, Indiana
nine guys deep. Okay see eight nine guys deep. You know,
we we've really moved away from just having you know,
your big three and then you know, maybe a six
man and that's your playoff roster. Now we're seeing teams
(27:47):
with depth and be able to play guys who are
their eighth or nine men off the bench and they
can play in the NBA finals. So Houston has added depth,
they've added veteran leadership, and they've also kept themselves in
a really good spot cap wise going forward.
Speaker 7 (28:02):
Yeah, and that's what the Durant thing kind of is.
I think they've talked about announcing a long term agreement
with Durant here soon, but it'll probably be one of
those where it's a two three year deal with a
player opt out. You know, it's kind of like a
one year, you know contract that we can kind of
keep doing one year deal, one year deal type thing.
So yeah, look they're hoping this thing works out. The
(28:23):
reality was, though you're right you talk about depth, they couldn't.
Like they had the tenth picking this year's draft, What
were they gonna do with that? That person wasn't even
gonna play. Reed Shepard was a top five pick of
THEIRS last year. He could barely get on the court
this year. So yeah, you're a deep team. You're a
good balance of young developing stars with veteran proven talent.
And again you're gonna have to be careful with the
(28:45):
Katie stuff. I would think probably on back to backs,
he's not going to play the next night. Same thing
with Steven Adams. You just got guys that are kind
of in that range of you really have to put
them in a little bit of bubble wrap to make
sure they're healthy. Because you signed Kevin Durant for the postseason,
you didn't sign him to win a regular season title
or anything like that. So I did even see the
Rockets maybe sacrifice in some of those games where you
(29:06):
know it costs you a top two seed. You end
up being the three of the four, but I would
give that up to be one hundred percent healthy come
playoff time.
Speaker 1 (29:13):
The OKAC if enemy will shit a little tiers seeing
Steven Adams a big key wing and Katie share the
floor once again. Hey, the Western Conference is a lot
like the SEC. You mentioned A and M maybe being
an eight to nine win team, they could be, you know,
a ten win team in any other conference. Western Conference,
you win forty five games. Congrats on the play in
you know, Eastern Conference, a lot different gory. Thanks so
(29:34):
much taking some time to appreciate it, and I look
forward to seeing you the SEC media days come a
few weeks from now.
Speaker 2 (29:40):
Yeah, it sounds good.
Speaker 7 (29:40):
Man. If you've never been to the College Football Hall
of Fame, I'll show you where the Vy Trophy cases.
Speaker 1 (29:44):
I've been once, and they used to have the field
goald kick exhibit, you know, and I think i'd be
like a thirty five yard field goal. I was like, Man,
I justin Tucker here, hopefully still up there. I would
love to see if I still got it. Chris Cordy,
appreciate it, man. All right, we'll be back with Inconceivable
here on this Wednesday edition The Craig Way Show. Here
(30:06):
we go with our two of today's program. Cameron Parker
with you. Glad to have you aboard here on The
Craigway Show. Craig Way out for the next couple of
weeks here on his yearly sabbatic to the East Coast
to Dirty Myrtle in South Carolina. He'll be back for
the SEC Media Days. We'll be out there all week
long bringing you live coverage from the College Football Hall
(30:27):
of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia. Myself, Craig and Mike Carge
from the morning Kickoff will be there throughout the week,
excited to bring you a lot of coverage, a lot
of good content, a lot of interviews, including with Steve
Sarakjian and whatever players Texas does bring. We do not
know what players will be there in attendance. They have
(30:48):
not announced it, yes, announced it yet, but we're hoping
that we do get to visit with arch Many because
we've been able to place some of his media availabilities,
whether it's with the Texas Media or the Manning Passing Academy,
but we haven't really had him on the air yet,
so hopefully we can finally get Craig Way and Art
to be able to sit down with Arch Manning. A
(31:12):
quick recap today's program.
Speaker 2 (31:14):
Our one.
Speaker 1 (31:14):
Chris Gordy stopped by from Sports Talk seven to nine.
If you missed it, check it out on our podcast page.
Some good stuff there. He was actually down at the
Manning Passing Academy. Got his thought on the weekend. His
thoughts on Texas the SCC, little LSU talk as well,
you're gonna hear from Peyton Mann, You're gonna hear from
Todd Nickshay. Hearing a lot of good, good buzz about
(31:36):
Garrett Nusmeyer, the LSU quarterback in his second year as
a starting quarterback.
Speaker 2 (31:40):
LSU nine wins last season.
Speaker 1 (31:42):
A little disappointing for Brian Killnon the Tigers year number four.
It's kind of a it's kind of a must win
season for bk Right in terms of making the playoff,
has not made the playoff yet. He made the SEC
title game in his first year, lost to Georgia fifty
to thirty, and since then has not really sniffed the playoff. Meanwhile,
(32:05):
his former program Notre Dame in the National Championship game
this past year. So the seats getting a little warm.
It's getting a little warm for Brian Killes. So entering
a big year for LSU. They have a tough schedule,
I think beginning at Clemson. I believe they've lost in
week one. I think Gordy said in each of the
last three seasons, you're playing in the other death Valley
(32:28):
to start to be speaking of hot seat, Dablo Sweeney Dabo,
that's a that's a game they need to win too
as well. Both programs entering a must win season to
begin twenty twenty five. So a good conversation there, but
a big year coming up for Garrett nuss Meyer. Pyton Manning,
(32:50):
of course, one of the hosts of The Manning Passing Academy,
one on the Pat McAfee show earlier this morning to
talk about the week. It's hard to believe it between
nine years of the Maning Passing Academy and this morning
he talked about, uh, the event, what it means to
him in over the years, how it has changed, how
has it evolved. And here's Pete Manning on the Manning
(33:13):
Passing Academy earlier today on the Pat McAfee show.
Speaker 5 (33:16):
Let's talk about a summer tradition for the last twenty
nine years manning Passing Academy. Obviously you're fresh out of
the most recent one. How was the weekend down? There?
A lot of people saying it looked like maybe you
boozed a little bit tonight before.
Speaker 3 (33:31):
Part of playing quarterback is having a few butt likes
on all night. But you were at the eight o'clock
staff meeting the next morning, right if you got if
you've got to soil with the eagle, as my dad said,
if you've got to hoop with the awls, you gotta
soar with the eagles. So it's kind of a good
sign for a quarterback if you're there at the eight
o'clock meeting. We had perfect attendance at every.
Speaker 4 (33:53):
Eight o'clock that love that has.
Speaker 3 (33:56):
It always been the case in years past certain quarterbacks,
and maybe maybe that was a good signe that maybe
they weren't ready to play quarterback.
Speaker 4 (34:04):
But another great year.
Speaker 3 (34:06):
Look, we had almost fifteen hundred campers, and then we
had forty seven college quarterbacks.
Speaker 4 (34:11):
We had over one hundred.
Speaker 3 (34:13):
And twenty top high school coaches and former NFL coaches
or small college coaches from around the country. That's our
staff We're trying to make these entering eighth graders through
entering twelfth graders, quarterbacks, receivers, tight ends, running backs better
high school football players.
Speaker 4 (34:30):
Pack that is our goal.
Speaker 3 (34:32):
If they all go on to play college in the NFL,
that's great, but our goal is to make them better
high school players. And most of the college camps now, Pat,
they aren't really doing that as much anymore. Right, they're
kind of recruiting camps. They're running forties, they're running vertical jumps,
and I get that they're trying to decide who they're.
Speaker 4 (34:48):
Going to recruit.
Speaker 3 (34:48):
We like teaching the basic fundamentals and playing quarterback, and
it's fun time for me to be with my dad,
my two brothers, Cooper and Eli.
Speaker 4 (34:56):
My nephews Archi and Hide were there.
Speaker 3 (34:58):
My brother, my son Mark shall attend to the camp,
so it's shotly a family affair as well.
Speaker 1 (35:04):
Next up here from this from Beaton's interview with Pat mac.
If you're talking about you mentioned here the twenty nine
years they put this event together, how much has changed
in terms of the quarterback style, right, I mean the
way football has played it has evolved since the event
was first put on twenty nine years ago to now.
(35:26):
So what's the difference in terms of Peyton's eye.
Speaker 3 (35:29):
Yeah, it's a great question. And you know Tyler Shuck,
who is a counselor. For two years, he was a Louisville,
Texas Tech.
Speaker 4 (35:39):
Orient He came back to the camp.
Speaker 3 (35:41):
Now he's the Saints first round draft choice, which is
very rare. We don't really ask current NFL quarterbacks to
call me because you know, this is their vacation time.
And Tyler came back and wanted to share his knowledge
with the college counselors and with the.
Speaker 4 (35:55):
High school athletes.
Speaker 3 (35:56):
And he just said, look, because he's lived in this
Nia world, keep the main thing, the main thing. Go
out and have fun your senior year in high school,
your senior year in college. Don't worry about all of
the outside noise and distractions, especially if you want to
go play at the next level.
Speaker 4 (36:14):
You got to make the main thing the main things.
That's easier said than.
Speaker 3 (36:17):
Done because people are pulling on on they have different commitments,
different directions. But I thought that was great advice. And
you still got to go out there and work in
the off season. You got to go out there and
perform on Friday nights, on Saturday afternoons. So we were
certainly concerned a couple of years ago with nil with
the portal, with that effect the attendance of our camp,
from our high school kids, from our college players.
Speaker 4 (36:39):
It hasn't.
Speaker 3 (36:40):
People still come down and want to ask questions. John
Gouden was there, He was given the NFL, he was
given the college players some advice. He did a clinic
for our high school coaches which was awesome. You can
imagine how you know, animated he is. And so it's
been able to kind of maintain the reason we started
the camp, and it's hard to believe he coming up
(37:02):
on thirty years next year.
Speaker 1 (37:03):
It almost feels like the Manning Passion Academy. Of course,
with Archer's involvement and now with him being a college
quarterback and a starting college quarterbacks, it seems that the
Manning Passing Academy has gotten the most hype the summer
than any other college camp. I feel like Lead eleven
kind of came and went. There wasn't a lot of
a lot of talk from Lead eleven, and of course,
(37:25):
you know Da Bell, Texas quarterback five star was a
part of that. But I think a lot of that
has to do with just arch Manning. And of course
you heard from Chris Gordy, you know there was it.
He couldn't even ask the question the arch Man because
there were so many people in the media scrum. Okay,
before we get to Peyton talking about arch Manning, another
nugget here, and this is, you know, a very interesting
(37:46):
I think answer from Peyton gives a little insight into
maybe how arch things here, considering you know, he was
around his uncle's Eli and arch Eli and Peyton excuse
me a little bit, but Peyton was asked about, Hey,
where the most important traits of quarterback needs to have
to be successful.
Speaker 2 (38:05):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (38:05):
Look to me, when I watch an NFL or college
game and I see a quarterback drop back and throw
a deep go route down the sideline and maybe the
corner is there and the free safety is over there.
Speaker 4 (38:18):
I watch how the receiver fights for the ball.
Speaker 3 (38:21):
Does he go up and go up and make the
catch amongst two defenders? Does he tackle the defensive back?
Because there's no way I'm gonna let my quarterback get
this pass intercepted. It's going to be incomplete pass interference.
No way, it's going to be an interception. And that
tells me how much that receiver respects his quarterback, that
(38:41):
he's gonna fight for him. Right, Sometimes you don't see that.
Sometimes you see the receiver kind of go, hey, I
don't really I don't really care. If it's intercepted and
it's double covered, he shouldn't be throwing it anyway.
Speaker 4 (38:50):
I want to see him fighting for the quarterback.
Speaker 3 (38:51):
And that's up to the quarterback to get those guys
fighting for him. By the way he handles them in practice,
how we have you know himself in the locker room.
Is he a guy that these linemen want to fight
and block for, these receivers want to go up and
get the ball for.
Speaker 4 (39:07):
So it's not always with the raw rob pep talk er.
Speaker 3 (39:10):
See, you don't have to give a speech every day
as a quarterback, but you better be there on time.
You better stay late, you better be tough, you better
be you know, in the conditioning front of the line. Right,
You're not gonna be the fastest or bench press the most,
but you better be kind of setting the example in
the conditioning and durrance aspect of it. And I think
(39:30):
all those things go into being a good quarterback. And
your teammates following you.
Speaker 1 (39:34):
And I think we heard from March last week at
the Many Passing Academy, you know, talking about how you know,
he would want to be the first one into the facility,
and he would get there and Kelvin Banks would be there. Okay,
well tomorrow I'm gonna be Kevin Banks. So he would
show up ten minutes earlier, gets there again, who's there
at Kelvin Banks? Of course, Kelvin Banks first round draft
pick to the New Orlands Saints. So you already you
(39:57):
already see that work ethic there for March Manning. Of course,
he's got some good role models in Peyton and Eline
of course his dad Cooper. Okay, speaking of which, talked
about the beginning of the show. I think a lot
of people just assume, you know that Peyton and Eli
or have been around Arch his entire life. Of course
they have, but around him in terms of his football development.
(40:18):
And if you checked out Bruce Feldman's piece in The
Athletic this past week, it's, hey, actually, you know Peyton Eeli,
you know, they're not in every single football practice and
every single game that Arch has been at instructing him.
It's really been all Cooper and his mother that have
live the development. It's not been so much Peyton Eli,
even though I think a lot of the media has
kind of driven that up and thinking that, oh man,
(40:40):
you know after quarterback meetings, you know, Arch immediately goes
to Peyton Eli and ask for their thoughts.
Speaker 2 (40:45):
I'm sure there's been some part of it.
Speaker 1 (40:46):
But McAfee asked Peyton Manning here you know about his
relationship with Arch and your hero follow up here for
McAfee as well.
Speaker 3 (40:53):
Well, Eli Iris uncle as we try to be there
as a resource forum. But you know, Cooper, he has
done a great job with Arch and they've handled, you know,
all the different things that have kind of come their
way in the right way. And I'm excited to watch
Archs play. He's been very patient. I thought he threw
the ball really well at the camp. He and Garrett
(41:14):
Dusmeyer and the kind of our three throwing exhibitions really
threw the ball well. All the quarterbacks though it well,
it's impressive. I mean they make throws that I wouldn't
even think about making. I mean Archs made the throw
the other day that I didn't need to cut off
man to the actual receiver, and thus Meyer Leonoris for
(41:35):
South Carolina. I mean, it's impressive all the way around.
But look, he's been patient. You know, it's been well documented.
The fact that he's you know, been there two years.
I'm such a believer in mastering the system that you're
in and when you have new coordinators every single year
in the NFL or college, that's just frustrating to me.
I was lucky, you know, Tom Moore, pat was there
(41:57):
my entire fourteen year, fourteen year career. Belichick gave Brady
some different coordinators, Charlie Weisman, Daniels O'Brien, but it was
the same system. Right Nick Saban makes his quarterbacks that
our new coordinators learned his system. So it is Kirby
and so the fact that Sarkesian calls the plays and
Arch has been there two years already is going to
(42:18):
know the system. That's going to be a huge advantage
for him. And I'm looking forward to seeing him get
out there on the field. He's worked real hard. I
love seeing him going to that camp for his teammate.
That's being a good teammate, that's being a good wing man.
And I'm excited to get down there and watch a
few games this year in Austin.
Speaker 4 (42:33):
I love the moxie.
Speaker 5 (42:34):
He's got to the breaking of change after running somebody,
and I think he got concussed.
Speaker 2 (42:38):
I mean, you don't have to give us anything.
Speaker 5 (42:40):
I think he got concussed in the the maxie.
Speaker 3 (42:45):
I mean that was that was his dad. I mean,
Cooper was a cocky wide receiver that was open every
time in the huddle. As you can imagine.
Speaker 4 (42:54):
That means.
Speaker 3 (42:55):
I think my sophomore year in high school, I was
caught Cooper was a senior. I think I completed one
hundred and twenty past that. You got through ninety of
them to my brother, okay, and and he would have liked.
Speaker 4 (43:05):
All one hundred and twenty. I mean he did not
care about.
Speaker 3 (43:08):
His teammates or's friends. I think I think that. I
think that little little swagger comes from his dad, and
that's good to see. Look, Arch has got to be
his own person, and he can't move. Yeah, my dad's
sort of speed sort of skipped the generation skip me
and Eli, and I think arch Arch has that which
helps him. But I still think with all quarterbacks, I mean,
(43:31):
I mean we got to be able to throw from
the pocket first and throw it on time and not
take you know, a lot of hits. That's what we
talked about to all of them. Hey, know your system,
know your answers. But then when it's time to make
him play, go out there and make him play with
your legs.
Speaker 4 (43:44):
But so I think he understands that.
Speaker 1 (43:46):
That's getting that's Pete Manning on the patn acres of
today A and M game. Of course, to run there
talking about thing on fourth down, right, of course, the
incredible diving for the pylon play from from arch Manning,
you know, making a little talk about the concussion. Also,
did you guys pick up on Peyton talking about staying
in the same system, right.
Speaker 2 (44:06):
That's a big That was a big key in.
Speaker 1 (44:08):
The recruitment of arch Manning, right of knowing that you're
gonna have the same play caller in the same scheme
throughout your entire career. In Hey, at Texas there's been
some staff turnover, but it's been Steve starkeys and calling
the plays for all five years. Kyle Flood is the
OC for five years. That's staff continuity. It's a big key.
(44:30):
It's a big key, especially in the day and age
where we see a lot of coordinators in coaching overhauls
happen every single Here's some good stuff there from Peyton
Manning on arch Manning as well. Okay, a little bit
behind here, we're gonna hear from Todd McShay on the
mcshae Report his thoughts on arch Manning at the Manning
Passing Academy. Up next on The Greig Way Show, Hour
(45:06):
two of today's program. Rolling along here on just say.
I don't want to be negative, but it's disgusting outside.
It's hot and human, it's gross. It is July second.
Hope everyone's getting ready for a little bit longer a weekend. Remember,
we will not have any local programming here on the
Zone July fourth, on Friday, So I hope you guys
(45:27):
are able to enjoy Friday off. If not, if you're
still working, don't worry. We'll still have a Fox programming
here on the Zone. Colin Coward, Dan Patrick so and
Dan Patrick show all of that good stuff. Okay, we're
going to continue our college football discourse here in hour two.
We're in Talk NBA in hour three, and also visit
with Ron Kobrie from the Round Rock Express, the Triple
(45:48):
A broadcaster for the Triple A affiliate of the Texas Rangers
who actually got a win last night.
Speaker 2 (45:55):
About that, Yeah, yeah, good job, good job.
Speaker 1 (45:58):
I feel like the last two series, every game is
going to extra innings for some reason. But I tend
to slacking of Baltimore Fantastic Ball Club yesterday. Okay, Todd
McShay with the Ringer Network, hosts of The McShay show,
mcshaye Report, NFL Draft Insider and when it comes to,
(46:18):
you know, quarterback talk and all that, I didn't play quarterbacks,
so I always fel a little bit out of my realm,
you know, talking about stuff like that. And I'll tell
you what, everything I've seen from Arch Banning's been outstanding,
but I always like to defer to guys who have
been doing this a little bit longer than I have.
And Todd McShay a big part of the Manning Passing Academy.
You may have seen the video of Archie talking about
(46:41):
how Todd McShay, you know, helps him come up with
a list of quarterbacks to invite. Now, mel Kiper sucks.
I'm guessing he was saying that in Jess But on
the McShay Show, Ringer Podcast Network, he dived into what
he saw from Arch Manning with Steve Men. So I'm
gonna play you most of the segment here uninterrupted. But
(47:04):
this is todic shade talking about Arch Manning and how
he stood out at the Manning Passing Academy.
Speaker 2 (47:12):
So Arch like what a great dude man.
Speaker 7 (47:21):
Like, not a good young man, like a great young man,
comfortable in his skin. Talk to him for I don't
know how many minutes, like genuinely curious where I lived,
stuff about my life. You know, thanking me for being
here means a lot to his family, his grandfather. Just
(47:42):
you know, when you like you meet certain people in
the oh, this is different. And I'm telling you there's
something to the quarterback position. Over twenty plus years of
doing this, dudes that are comfortable in their skin.
Speaker 2 (47:57):
That's important. As a twenty year.
Speaker 7 (48:01):
Old that's as comfortable in skin as I can ever
remember up there with like the top guys that I've
been and like there I can think at the top
of my head like Mahomes was one of them.
Speaker 2 (48:15):
Russell Wilson.
Speaker 7 (48:17):
I know what people have their thoughts on Russell Wilson's
personnel and all that stuff, But when I met him
when he was twenty two years old Wisconsin after n
C State and all that, Like I was like, oh okay,
blown away by him Andrew Luck like in that I
put him up there with some of those And I'm
not leaving guys.
Speaker 2 (48:34):
I'm just the first guys off the top of my head.
Speaker 8 (48:37):
Right, You're gonna take a lot of shots, like you
know at Jane Daniels when you look at him and
and all the stuffing went hero at Arizona State, Like
you have to be able to say, you have to
be able to put that in the past, put that aside,
and say I believe in myself enough. Tom Brady, you know,
Tom Brady is a terrible athlete coming out all that.
Speaker 2 (48:55):
You have to believe in yourself enough.
Speaker 8 (48:57):
You have to be comfortable enough in your skin to
get through all that adversity that is most definitely going
to come your way as a quarterback.
Speaker 7 (49:03):
Yeah, and then on the field, like just a calm,
a calm way about him. Obviously he's been there. He's
been there his whole life since he was can remember
throwing a football. So like, obviously it's nothing there is
rattling him. He's the Texas quarterback. He's a you know,
a Manning family all of that, So not surprising, but
(49:26):
like I kind of just alluded to it, alluded to
this before, like still still working on like consistency of
like footwork and and and and ball placement and all
that stuff. Good, Like I would say he was good,
you know, like really good, but like there's and it's
encouraging to me, to be quite honest, like there's still
(49:48):
growth here. So with game experience and and more and
kind of drilling it in and you know, he's he's
working it, like he's going to keep getting better that
like instead of people are like, well, you know, I
thought this guy maybe was a little bit more pinpoint
and his footwork was a little bit more consistent, Like yeah,
those are like three fifth year players or three year
(50:11):
starters or like I think, I think this guy's gonna
keep getting better, which is what you want to see.
And we already know what the baseline. We did a
whole show on it, and just by the way, if
you're listening or watching right now, like if you want
to go on YouTube or Spotify or or Apple or
wherever you get your podcasts, just look up the mcshag Show.
(50:32):
And we've done a breakdown on like I think maybe
seven or eight guys already at the quarterback position. So
a lot of people probably maybe jumping into this, maybe
they'll be watching this in August. But like the reports,
are there full film breakdowns of all these quarterbacks and
from mention and I we watched it separately and gave
it all there, so so please go back if you
(50:54):
haven't watched or listened to that to get a feel.
And mench will helped me through this today and of
each of these quarterbacks. Reminded like, all right, here's the
here's the macro while I'm diving into the micro from
the last four days. But but but yeah, but there's
there's stuff to go back on. But I remember what
finishing his tape Steve and being like this is he's
(51:16):
he just completed like phase one, but there's probably two
or three more.
Speaker 2 (51:20):
Phases to go, right, what's your line again? The repeat?
Rinse Repeatmber, rinse repeat, refined. One of the rints were
the beginning of the n probably yeah, rinse refine repeat.
Speaker 7 (51:35):
I guess you want to refine before you repeat it,
but yeah, rinse, refine repeat.
Speaker 9 (51:44):
Here's something interesting here we go like when you when
you do this, I think at the end of this season,
arch Manning is going.
Speaker 7 (51:56):
To have a decision to make that. Actually, don't think that.
I know that there's gonna be been. Everyone's gonna want
to know is he gonna come out, is he going
into the twenty twenty six draft.
Speaker 8 (52:06):
Already senses a shift in tone from you, because I
didn't feel like that was even a possibility a little
while ago.
Speaker 2 (52:13):
Something I think we should keep an eye on.
Speaker 7 (52:19):
Austin is a very small place for a bigger city,
in a city that's growing rapidly. All eyes of Texas,
of Texas are on the quarterback of Texas. And someone
I was talking to there said, it's not it's not
Colt McCoy's Texas anymore.
Speaker 2 (52:38):
It's different.
Speaker 7 (52:41):
In a couple different ways.
Speaker 2 (52:47):
And he literally can't go.
Speaker 7 (52:53):
Grab a bag of chips or or a bottle of
water at a convenience store without.
Speaker 2 (53:01):
Without this. So there's gonna there might have.
Speaker 9 (53:08):
There might be if Vince Young, if there were, you know,
if the social media was the thing that.
Speaker 2 (53:14):
It is now when Vince Young was there.
Speaker 7 (53:15):
This is God And if Vince came back after winning
that national championship USC that's what he is, right, So there's.
Speaker 2 (53:24):
Gonna I would I would. I don't know.
Speaker 7 (53:27):
It's just something I thought about watching him interact and
hearing some of the stories about what it's like to
be at Texas right now.
Speaker 10 (53:34):
How exhausting for a young man by the way, Sorry,
and he's he's wonderful about it and he's used to
it to a certain degree. But I think it's like there, interesting,
so there.
Speaker 2 (53:50):
I don't know.
Speaker 7 (53:50):
I this is my own thought and my just something
I put right back here. Like if he were to leave,
maybe it would have something to do with like it's
weighing the option of we're the Mannings. We believe in
(54:13):
full development.
Speaker 2 (54:14):
Eli shoot came back for I think is fifth year
at all, Miss, I think he did right, Yeah, that's
what I was talking. Remember when he went back. I
was stunned.
Speaker 7 (54:22):
I was having some of these conversations with different people
and they were remember Eli was fifth year. The Manning
family is we have covered in great detail on the
show and go back to the Arts Manning full breakdown.
They believe fully in the developmental process and we're watching
it like in front of our eyes.
Speaker 2 (54:42):
The last couple of years, we've talked about the.
Speaker 7 (54:43):
Bow Nicks and the Jaden Daniels and like the guys
who were coming out with fifty five, fifty seven, sixty
one starts and the success they're having early in their career.
Speaker 2 (54:56):
Okay, and so it's just real.
Speaker 7 (55:00):
It's reaffirming what we know about, like more game experience
is critical to your early career and and if things
go poorly early in your career, they may not be
the second contract that you'd expect. You may have lost
your job, you may have lost your confidence. So they
have been from the jump twenty nine years ago when
the man in Passing Academy started.
Speaker 2 (55:19):
The family.
Speaker 7 (55:21):
Has kind of set the precedent of we're going to
be prepared when we get to the NFL. Now, obviously
money is not the thing that it is for some
for some people people in this same position, you can't.
You have to assume it's not much of a thing
for Arch And quite honestly, he'll probably get offered more
(55:43):
money from Texas than he will and his rookie an
NFL team is allowed to pay him for his first
year playing rookie quarterback in the NFL. So it ain't
a money thing. It's is he developed? On one hand,
he ready? Is he ready to step in? Because you
know he's going to be the first overall pick. And
(56:05):
when he's when you're the first overall pick, you and
know you're starting week one. Someone's even asked, is cam
Morgan going to start week one?
Speaker 2 (56:12):
Here? You're starting week one.
Speaker 7 (56:13):
Okay, versus is it time to just move on to
the next step and develop there?
Speaker 2 (56:22):
So just the thought, I just.
Speaker 7 (56:27):
I love the fact Cooper is one of the all
time guys man his dad and as someone else is
telling me, and I don't think it.
Speaker 2 (56:36):
You may have mentioned it.
Speaker 7 (56:39):
His mom Arch's mom is like a track star, former
track star, and so everyone jokes like, yeah, he was
a wide receiver, but mom's a track star. He got
that's where he got it from, right. But the thing
that and Peyton's got all the commercials and he's hysterical
and I really enjoyed my time talking to to Peyton.
But Peyton's like, you know, more on business, you know,
(57:03):
on like getting better and you know, like that. And
Eli's the you know, the youngest of the three, and
kind of hell, he's gonna he's gonna get a little
shot in.
Speaker 4 (57:12):
Here and there.
Speaker 7 (57:13):
And he's actually like funnier even though Peyton's got the
funniest commercials maybe of all time for like one recurring
type of role. But Cooper is like he had opened
mic on Friday night and in the coaches meetings like
legit could be a stand up comedian like he's I
(57:34):
didn't know it was in the Manning DNA to be
that farn I think I always knew it was funny.
And this is my first like extended time around Cooper.
But I think having that as your dad, even though
you're in this Manning family and like the pressures that
come with it, in the spotlight and all that has
kind of kept Arch. He's got a really good balance
(57:55):
of serious, we're here for business, let's work, and like
life's okay, you know.
Speaker 2 (58:02):
And that was interesting to watch. I really enjoyed my
time with with Cooper.
Speaker 7 (58:05):
And being around him, and yeah, it's just it's gonna
be fascinating to see what happens there.
Speaker 2 (58:11):
Okay, love it. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (58:17):
McShay talking about Arch Manning and the interesting discussion they're
talking about how we've we've expected Arch, based off Cooper,
Peyton and Eli to use all of his eligibility in Austin,
but Arch of the Manning Passing Academy this past week
(58:39):
and you know, was kind of talking. Was asked about
dealing with the fame that he experiences in Austin, and
he he was open about it's difficult for him to
adjust to it. I think Cooper talked about it too
in his piece with Bruce Feldman. It's not so much
people coming up and asking for pictures. He's okay with that.
It's him just walking to class and everyone around him
(59:01):
holding up their cell phone recording. And I think at
one point he was here in Austin his parents were
in town. He asked his mom, Hey, can you walk
with me the class because I don't know what to do.
I don't know how to handle students at all times,
recording every single move around me. And hey, that's tough
for an eighteen, nineteen twenty year old. It's tough for anybody, right,
(59:23):
No one is really. Even though we're growing up around cameras,
you still don't get used to it, especially the level
of celebrity that Arch just has.
Speaker 2 (59:32):
Now.
Speaker 1 (59:32):
Is that going to impact his decision to the Claire
for the NFL Draft? Really, I don't know, and I
don't think mcshaye knows either. He's just alluding to that fact.
I do know I have seen it in person. I've
been downtown with friends once and happen to see Arch
Manning and his group of friends walking across the street,
and people at the restaurant were at saw it was
(59:53):
Arch and started freaking out, and they got up off
their table and got onto the restaurants railing and recording him.
It was Taylor Swift walking across the street, and you know,
Arts looked over and you know it weirds you out.
So I sympathize with the kid on having to deal
with that and happen to adjudgte to it. Now, hopefully
he's able to get to a place mentally where he
(01:00:14):
can learn how to balance the fame alongside with being
just a college kid and just trying to enjoy your life,
which I think is what his family has pushed. Hey,
enjoy your high school time, enjoy your time in college,
and then you'll be ready to go as a football
player but also a human being at the next level,
because hey, once you leave college, you're not going back.
(01:00:37):
Once you graduate, you're done. So best wishes with Arts
on that. But something an interesting, interesting nugget there from
Todd mcshaye from The McShay Report again check out that
last podcast. You want to hear his full report on
Arch Banning as well as the other quarterbacks who threw
and coached at.
Speaker 2 (01:00:56):
The Manning Passing Academy.
Speaker 1 (01:00:58):
Okay, up next, he's gonna get a little MBA free
agency talk my favorite teams in the moves they have
made so far in the free agency period, and includes
one of those teams here in the Lone Star State.
Up next on The Creigway Show. All right, let's get
(01:01:30):
to some NBA talk here on the Craigway Show. Cameron
Parkervillion for Craigway on this Wednesday edition of the program
Real Quick. Wanted to get to my big winners from
the off season so far, my top three and not
going to surprise anybody here with my picks, I don't think.
But let's start off with my number one team so
far this offseason, and we talked a little bit about
(01:01:53):
it with Chris Gordy earlier today in the program. With
the Houston Rockets, I think have absolutely crushed the offseason.
So looking back at last season, right, a really good
year for the Rockets in the rebuild. Some great pieces
have pulled up, including Alprin s Guon. He's been fantastic
development of Jalen Green Jabari Smith. They get the two
(01:02:17):
seed in the playoffs, then losing the first round to
the Golden State Warriors, and you know, in that series
kind of made you question, Okay, what is the future
of Jalen Green, what do you do with guys like
Van Fleet and Dylan Brooks? And we got the answer
pretty quickly. The Rockets went ahead and traded Dylan Brooks
(01:02:37):
and Jalen Green to the Phoenix Suns for Kevin Durant
getting that extra score, that clutch time player that can
knock down buckets in the fourth quarter, because you know,
there was a couple of fourth quarters against Golden State
where it was like, okay, who's gonna score for Houston here.
Jalen Green, you know, disappeared at certain points, and yeah,
(01:02:58):
Dylan Brooks, you know, great in the locker room, great defender.
But you know, that opens up a lot more room
for some of the younger guys like Tarry Eastenham and
Thompson Reed Shepper, Jabari Smith. More minutes for those guys.
In addition, now get Gril grabbing Kadi. Okay, the other
moves resigned Jabari Smith Junior to a four year deal,
(01:03:18):
five year deal, actually one hundred and twenty two million dollars.
Love that re signed Steven Adams three years I think
three years, thirty nine million. Maybe a little bit of overplay,
but still good to have that rim protector depth. And
then out of Houston or added a Clint Capella returned
to Houston three years, twenty one million dollar. And I
told Gordy Houston has three centers that could start for
(01:03:40):
a lot of teams in the NBA. So some versatility,
some depth there and able to restructure Fred van Vliet's contract.
He was gonna make what like a million, one hundred
gazillion dollars this nex. I think it's been fifty three
million dollars. Able to restructure it, to save some move
save some room on the cap, and you know, trade
(01:04:02):
away that number ten pick. But again, they have so
much depth on this team. I'm not sure whoever they
would have drafted that number ten would have been able
to help them. Also grabbing Dori and Finnie Smith four years,
fifty three million dollars. I think he's a great fit
for this team. You throw in the development of Tari
Easton men Thompson, who I think is going to be
(01:04:24):
a fantastic player. I saw Houston play Okac at the
Toyota Center at the end of this past season, and
it was during a week where okay See was kind
of on a long road trip, had a couple of
bad losses, won the Houston won the LA But I
remember watching, you know it was there at that game,
and Houston led from start to finish and just out
played okay See and just looked like a team that oh,
(01:04:47):
you know, they they match up pretty well. Okay and
men Thompson shout goon, you know they gave. They gave
okay See a lot of fits. And now bringing in
a guy like Fanny Smith, he add in the shooting
of KD. Houston Rockets, I think now are the second
team in the Western I think number one Civil case
See obviously defending champions, basically bringing back everybody to run
(01:05:11):
it back again. I think Houston right now is the
favorite to win outside of Oka See in the Western Conference.
Speaker 2 (01:05:19):
Right behind him at number three the Denver Nuggets.
Speaker 1 (01:05:24):
Anytime you have the best player in the world on
your team, usually you're going to be a good contender.
If for the Denver Nuggets, you know, I think after
this past season, if you're a Nuggets fan, you're thinking, man, okay,
after winning that championship, it feels like we've kind of
wasted some time with Jokic.
Speaker 2 (01:05:46):
You know.
Speaker 1 (01:05:46):
It feels like, now we've wasted two seasons of his prime.
Speaker 2 (01:05:50):
What are we going to do here? Now?
Speaker 1 (01:05:52):
You know, they wanted to avoid the luxury tax. They
did not re sign KCP. Let go Bruce, let go
Bruce Brown. Team a lot different. They're kind of in
a weird cat find and they bringing Russell Westbrook, who
you know was good in the regular season when you
need someone to eat up twenty five minutes and just
bring the energy. But no one took them seriously and
(01:06:13):
they did push Okac the seven. And now looking back
at it, hey, Nuggets thunder may have that may have
been the Western Conference finals, not thunder t Wolves. It
may have been Nuggets thunder. So going to this offseason,
you know what was themver gonna do? There's always the
question mark and Michael Porter Junior. Well, they got away.
They get off his contract, and not only they get
(01:06:35):
get off his contract able to bring in a player
who I think is better, who is younger, who helps
their team a lot better and has a better contract,
and Cam Johnson for the Brooklyn Net. So Johnson comes in.
I think he's going to be a fantastic fit with Jokic.
I mean, kind of like Lebron. If you're not a
better basketball player playing with Nikola Jokich, you're probably the
(01:06:57):
reason why. It's probably your fault. And I think Cam
Jo is gonna benefit clearly with Jokic MPJ.
Speaker 2 (01:07:05):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (01:07:05):
Obviously he wasn't healthy against OKC in that series, but
you know, Porter Junior is a guy that's either gonna
get you twenty four points or he's gonna score you
two points. And he's just gonna be a complete non
factor in for his frame, in his size, in his
ability to score. I think a lot of basketball fans
have always wanted more out of Porter Junior and we
(01:07:27):
just really haven't got it. In addition to Cam Johnson,
they bring in Bruce Brown, who I thought was a
huge part, a huge catalyst for their championship run two
years ago, and also adding more depth with Jonas Valanuenas
a little bit older is Valaniunas, but he's definitely someone
that can come in behind Jokic. Big bruising center. He
(01:07:47):
still has a fantastic back to the basket type game.
Good addition for the Nuggets. They're making some moves here
and good to see the Nuggets step up. I think
now looking at the pecking order, the Western Conference is
next season, okay, see one, Houston two, and I think
the Nuggets are right there at three, maybe t Wolves four.
(01:08:10):
I'm not high on the Clippers or the Lakers or
Golden State. I'm just gonna get that out there, Okay.
My third favorite team from the NBA offseason the Atlanta Hawks.
They were a conference finals team, what three four years ago,
And yeah, it may have been a weaker year, and
you know, sometimes you might get the benefit of the
doubt with some matchups and some injury luck, and I
(01:08:32):
think that was the case.
Speaker 2 (01:08:35):
But here we are.
Speaker 1 (01:08:36):
By the way, they won forty games last season, playing team,
and that was despite losing Jalen Johnson, who I thought
was almost an All Star before his injury late in
the season.
Speaker 2 (01:08:49):
Good team, good corps. You have. Now what.
Speaker 1 (01:08:55):
Tatum goes down with the achilles, He's out for the
next season. There goes Boston. They ship out porsingas to Atlanta.
Get two in the second and Drew Holliday taking a
gap year Indiana losing Halliburton. There you go, gap year.
I know Milwaukee's there. I don't know what they're doing.
Same thing with New York hired Mike Brown. Eh, I'm
(01:09:18):
gonna pass there. So in Atlanta, I think was the
team that sees sees Indiana make the finals come within
a game of winning the championship with a roster that
no one really expected them to contend with compete with.
They have what one top ten, one top fifteen guy,
but a lot of the role players. It's Atlanta roster now,
(01:09:39):
I think is one of those teams that you could
talk yourself into possibly contending in the Eastern Conference, because hey,
two teams have to make the conference finals, right, it
has to be two teams. Why not the Atlanta Hawks.
They make the trade for Porzingis, and yeah, he was
getting thirty plus million dollars, but when he's healthy, he's
a great player. I love the one year deal for
Luke Canard. I think he's fantastic spacer around Trey Young's
(01:10:02):
gonna be a great fit. And they make the trade
for Nikhiel Alexander Walker from the te Wolves I love
Alexander Walker. He was a menisicanst oka. See defensively, he
is a pain in the butt to play against. I
love the roster that Atlanta's put together. Now you get
Trey Young, Dyson Daniels, Jayleen Johnson becomes back healthy, Alexander
(01:10:22):
Walker plus Porzingis at the five.
Speaker 2 (01:10:26):
That's a fun team.
Speaker 1 (01:10:27):
That's a real fun team if they can stay healthy, right,
and that's always gonna be the question mark. Can Trey
Young stay healthy? Can Persing history healthy? I love a
Conglo back there at the five. Resa say, of course,
first round draft pick from last season, drafted Asa Newell
from from Georgia. I love his ability to get to
the rim. So the Hawks are going to be a
(01:10:48):
real fun team to watch next season. And you know,
I may talk myself into the Atlanta Hawks being in
the Eastern Conference Finals again next season. So congrats to Houston.
They are my number one winner of the office. He's
in Denver to the Atlanta Hawks.
Speaker 2 (01:11:02):
Three.
Speaker 1 (01:11:02):

Lebron James signing or arch manning whatnot. It's it's a
great tool to have handy. And also come football season,
you know it's Saturday, you may be at your kids
soccer practice or his t ball game. You know you're
trying to you know, find cell phone, you know service.
(01:12:56):
You want to listen to what's happening in the game. Boom,
open up the app, click on thirteen hundred zone and
it will connect you to Craig Way in Texas football
and also you know Texas basketball, baseball, softball. Throughout the season,
we're getting closed. It's right around the corner. A couple
quick notes here. Up next, we're gonna have ron Kobe
from the Roundwrack Express joining us live from Believe he's
(01:13:18):
down in Houston as the Express taken on the Sugarland
Space Cowboys. But some quick recruiting notes some good news
coming the way of Texas. It was a tough I
don't know, toughest the right word, but some commitments did
not go the way the Longhorns, and you know weren't
weren't surprised, but still nonetheless disappointed. But there's two commits
(01:13:43):
right now that are trending in the favor of the
long Horns and Steve Sarkisian in both are big boys
up front on the offensive line. Two Crystal Ball projections
have been registered on the or Crystal Balls or RPM,
depending on which recruiting platform you like. But right now
(01:14:07):
all things pointing in the direction of Texas for two guys,
five star offensive lineman Felix Ojoe from Mansfield, Texas and
four star interior offensive lineman John Turntine from North Crowley,
both expected to commit believe the next two weeks, and
(01:14:29):
both right now are favorited for Texas. So what a
huge addition it would be to the offensive line and
herb hands staff currently so far in the twenty twenty
six class, Texas with just one offensive lineman's are two
offensive lineman commitments, Max Wright, the three star from Melissa, Texas,
and then Nicholas Robertson, the three star from Klein Spring
(01:14:54):
High School out in Spring, Texas. So with Ojo and
Turntine they do end up commit the Texas. This would
be if Ojo would be their third five star commit,
which would tie them for the most. With Alabama also
bring in their ninth four star commit from John Turntime,
I would put him inside the top ten for sure,
(01:15:16):
and so far in the recruiting rankings, was still a
lot more names to go, but Herbhan possibly cleaning up
and looking at this offensive line class between twenty six,
not a lot of in state products to go out
and get outside of Turntime and Ojo. So if Texas
can go out and nab those two, boy be a
(01:15:38):
huge addition to the Longhorns. I don't know if week
is the right word, but the twenty twenty five class,
Herbhan only added, Sorry, I keep saying herbpan for some reason,
Kyle Flood only added a couple offensive linemen. You had
Nick Brooks, the four star who we've heard a lot
of good things about from Steve Starr Keason six to seven,
three hundred and forty five pounds. I just can't get
(01:15:59):
over that. And then Jordan Coleman, the three star from
Cedar Hill, and then also Devin Coleman, the three star
from Cedar Sorry, Devin Coleman, the three star from Cedar Hill,
and his high school teammate Jordan Coleman as well. So
what in an addition, it would be if Flood and
sark can Land turn Tyme and Ojo, and it appears
so far they were heading in that direction. Okay, what
(01:16:21):
about some other big names to look out for? Well,
today we're waiting on the decision from one commit later
on today that at one point was considered to be
leaning towards Texas. That is Kendall Gerville, the four short
offensive lineman from Fort Miles, Florida. He's supposed to announce today.
Do not believe it has come down yet. Likely it
(01:16:44):
will become way of Hayes Fawcet with on three, but
so far it's expected that Gerville will commit to Florida.
Speaker 2 (01:16:55):
Weak Ago.
Speaker 1 (01:16:55):
I think we expected to be Texas, but you think
about it, Florida has missed out on some recruits the
last couple of weeks. Billion aate peers in a must
win mode right now, wants to make sure they keep
up the recruiting momentum, so they're gonna spend some more money,
and they're gonna spend more money than I think Sark
(01:17:16):
in Texas wants to spend and is willing to spend.
So it is a little bit of a bummer to
miss out on Gerville. But I mean, hey, go back
and look at the month of June for Kenny Baker.
So again, if a kid cares more about money then
he cares about winning, then you know, I think you're
okay with maybe possibly missing out on him. But again,
a lot of time to go. These kids can still
(01:17:38):
change their mind. Long ways to go until signing day
in December. A few other names to look out for
coming up. We mentioned Turntime. He'll ac should be announcing
July fourth. I believe Ojo announcing July fourth as well,
so it might be a fantastic Friday for Texas fans
on July fourth. Samri Matthews the four star from a
(01:17:59):
high school, My high school in North Carolina, shout out
huff July eleventh, his decision date, probably two weeks ago
he was a Texas. He last visited South Carolina. I
think he had a fantastic visit in Columbia. Columbia is
a lot closer to Charlotte than Austin is.
Speaker 2 (01:18:16):
We'll see about that.
Speaker 1 (01:18:18):
Jamari and Carlton the four star edge rusher, number eight
edge rusher in the country, number forty four player overall
leaning Texas right now. As is Cozy Okpala, the four
star linebacker for Mad Creek and K Texas. He's announcing
tomorrow ten am on the On three Recruits YouTube channel.
So Texas could pick up at least three commits this
(01:18:42):
weekend through Sunday beginning today, possibly four if maybe some
shocking moves will be made. Brandon Rouse, four star linebacker
from Marietta at Georgia. For a long time considered to
be a lean to Tennessee, maybe Alabama, maybe Michigan, but
Texas has become a big threat this weekend to Tennessee.
(01:19:03):
I do not believe he has a decision date set,
but rivals Sinan three reporting that, hey, if he does
commit this weekend, it could be Texas. We'll keep an
eye out for Brandon Rouse, the four star linebacker from Marietta, Georgia,
and then some other names. Tyler Atkinson, the five star
linebacker out of Lokanfielle, Georgia, Hey out of Georgia, Uggah
(01:19:28):
Bulldogs gonna be the favorite in this one, but Texas
has come on strong. Oregon Clemson also chasing Atkinson. Do
not see a decision date yet from him mentioned Gerville
already announcing today and the number three cornerback in the
country David Benjamin being chased by Oregon and Michigan. But
Texas has come on strong here lately. Benjamin the four
(01:19:51):
star cornerback from Corona Callifornia. So some good news there
the recruiting front. Big takeaways is Okpala make committ Texas
tomorrow and then would not be surprised to see Felix
Ojo and John Turntime commit to Texas on July fourth,
Monday ups show Leeve. We're gonna have a recruiting insider
(01:20:11):
on to recap a busy weekend for Texas. Okay, that's
your Texas football recruiting notes and nuggets there. Up next,
Rond Kobriy the Round Rock Express will join Texas Rangers
making some moves here. How does the impact their season
going forward? As The Gregway Show continues on this Wednesday afternoon. Well,
(01:20:49):
we'll continue on this Wednesday edition of The Greg Ways Show.
Cameron Parker, you're taking you through the final hour and
what was a hot, in humid and just nasty day
turned into a monsooned here in a Higheart Studios and
hopefully staying dry and staying cool out in sugar Land, Texas.
(01:21:09):
Is our good friend, my good friend, rolland Kobe with
the Round Rock Express Triple a broadcaster in his second
year as a lead broadcaster. So first off, Rollan, how
humid is it out there in sugar Land?
Speaker 2 (01:21:21):
And how are you doing? Yeah, it's it's not too
bad today. I good. We got ninety five.
Speaker 6 (01:21:26):
Humidity is lower than it usually is this time of
year down here, so I'm enjoying it this week. I
didn't realize it was raining back there in Austin today.
Speaker 1 (01:21:34):
We're in that weird part of the year where you know,
four or five o'clock we just get some showers. Hey,
you know, I think I know I'm getting old rollin
because it's like, oh man, it's raining all we just
we just really need the rain. Man, this is this
is great. Like, shut up, dude, come on, you're twenty
seven years old, but here I am, you know, just like,
oh good, we've got some rain today. So of course
(01:21:55):
rain is good as long as it doesn't delay Round
Rock Express Baseball, which beginning taking half the season five
and two so far, a good start in the PCL
in a real big series against sugar Land, and you know,
the last couple of years we've seen sugar Land really
dominate the PCL. Obviously Ryland triple A team for the
Houston Rockets, but it's changed a little bit. We saw
Oklahoma City win the first half. In the second half
(01:22:17):
so far, it's been rond Rock's way. So take us
through the first half for the Express and the second
half and what you're looking forward to.
Speaker 6 (01:22:24):
Yeah, I think the entire first half with this group,
you felt like the record was not indicative of how
good they were. You know, you finish that first half
of the season struggling there in Oklahoma City, and this
offense has been really good. It's been maybe the best
offensive the PCL since the start of June other than
(01:22:44):
Las Vegas, and Las Vegas has just been great. This year,
so it feels like you're starting to turn a corner.
There's a little more stability with the roster, although as
of an hour ago that changed as Josh Young was
just optioned down from the Rangers, which is a bit
of a surprise. So but as far as what's going
on with the Express right now, this is a really
(01:23:06):
solid group and you feel like they've got a chance
to maybe make a run at it in the second
half of the season.
Speaker 2 (01:23:11):
Blank crim has been great all year.
Speaker 6 (01:23:12):
Cody Freeman, you can make a case as one of
the best hitters in this league. He's right now tied
for fourth and hits in the PCL, tied for third
and batting average. So the lineups deep is just whether
or not you can get enough pitching. And they've gotten
some reinforcements this week from Double A Frisco, so three
new arms added two to the bullpen, and one tonight
we're really excited to see.
Speaker 2 (01:23:33):
That's Cole Drake the left.
Speaker 6 (01:23:34):
He was an eleventh round pick by the Rangers back
in twenty twenty two who really dominated the Double A
level to start this year, and so we'll see what
he's made of here at the Triple A level.
Speaker 2 (01:23:43):
Tonight in sugar Land.
Speaker 1 (01:23:44):
You mentioned in Josh Seng, the former All Star first
round draft with the Rangers, a huge part of their
World Series championship season, and he has struggledly. He's gone
through his various injuries throughout his career, including last season
of course, and in this season up and down. Believe
he batted one fifty eight in the month of June,
and the Express announced or the Rangers and the Express
(01:24:05):
announced earlier today that he's been optioned the Triple A,
making room for Jake Berger to come up, who is
just was taking off the ten day DL list. So
what do you make of this move of sitting down
Josh Young. Maybe just a mental reset for him to
be able to kind of find some confidence in his swing, because,
without a doubt, the talent's there, but so far he's
not been able to execute out the plate this season.
Speaker 2 (01:24:27):
Yeah, it's it's shocking.
Speaker 6 (01:24:30):
I think the last couple of days there was rumblings
that this might happen. They sat him for a couple
of games. He's in two thirty seven this year. He
got off to a nice start, but the Rangers lineup,
which has just struggled for most of this year.
Speaker 2 (01:24:45):
I just pulled up the tweet.
Speaker 6 (01:24:46):
From Evan Grant, who Evan does such a great job
covering the Rangers. At the end of May, Josh Young
had a seven to sixty two OPS. Marcus Simeon had
a five thirty six OPS. As June ended, Simeon had
an OPS twenty points better than Josh Young, which is startling.
(01:25:08):
And he just struggled to hit with runners in scoring position,
and then there was a couple of defensive miscues over
the weekend there against the Mariners that didn't help his cause.
So you know, this worked for Jake Berger, who the
Rangers sent down to the Express when we were in
El Paso in early May. He came down, worked on
some things, looked great by the time he was leaving
(01:25:28):
at the end of the week. And so you hope
for Josh it's the same situation where he'll come down,
He'll join this club over the weekend, get his three
games in, maybe stay in Round Rock next week when
Albuquerque comes to town, starts to swing the bat a
little better and then goes right back up. But yeah,
you didn't see this coming. That's a piece that obviously
was a huge reason why the Rangers won the World
(01:25:50):
Series in twenty twenty three, and last year had to
deal with injuries, but even when he was on the
field was very productive.
Speaker 1 (01:25:56):
And also a big part of that run in twenty
twenty three was Evan Carter, who similarly has you know,
had his ups and downs this season. Earlier in the
season he was sent down to Round Rock and now
was you know, called back up to Texas and he's
hit very well. You know, the last seven games got
ten hits. You go back to thirty games, twenty six
hits in thirty games, he's bat near the three hundred mark.
(01:26:17):
So obviously tex is looking for something similar here with
Josh Young that you mentioned, Jake Berger, but also with
Evan Carter.
Speaker 6 (01:26:24):
Yeah, Evan that first week of the season, you know,
after it was announced he was going to start the
season at Triple A, and he took everything in stride
right away day one when he was taking questions from
the media. You know, he knew that he hadn't played
very much over the last few seasons because of the
back injury. Last year, he obviously, you know, vaulted through
(01:26:45):
the system and helped the Rangers win the World Series
in twenty twenty three. In that final month of the
year getting called up. But in twenty four he dealt
with the back problems, had to have surgery, and so
he just hadn't played very much. This is a twenty
two year old, and so he came round rocket. I
think the first week two weeks he struggled a bit.
He's still trying to figure out the back. And then
(01:27:06):
you know, you started to see the Evan Carter from
twenty twenty three, and they started working on some things
with him and they opened up his stance a little
bit more. He started feeling much better, and the numbers
proved it before he was brought up to back up
to the big leagues there in early May. And now
as he's starting to get more at bats every day,
(01:27:26):
I think you're only going to see him get better
and better. And he is so important to what the
Rangers are trying to do right now. If he can
get on base, he's a guy. He's a high on
base guy. If he could play a great center field,
he can be the straw that really stirs the drink
for the Rangers. And it's nice to see that he's
playing well. He's had the last few nights off, he's
on the bereavement list right now, but he should be
(01:27:48):
back shortly. And you know, you just hope the Rangers
offense can start to turn a corner here because it's
been such a slow start. Right when you think they're
going to start to figure things out, they take a
couple steps back. But hopefully the ten runout yesterday will
start to change things.
Speaker 1 (01:28:02):
You mentioned a couple moves with cold Drake and Sculler
Hayes being called up from Frisco to Round Rock. Looking
at Cole Drake's fantastic prospect number eleven in the Texas
Rangers prospect rankings from twenty twenty five six foot five
to twenty only twenty four years old, you know, what's
the scouting report on cold Drake so far this season
(01:28:24):
and his ability to pitch this year that have allowed
him to have such a fantastic season down in Frisco
and now hopefully up in Round Rock.
Speaker 6 (01:28:32):
Yeah, you know, going back the last three years, I'm
trying to remember a guy that's come up from Double
A that's been as exciting of a starting pitching prospect
as Cole Drake is. And it's hard to pinpoint somebody,
but you said at twenty four years old. He's six
five to twenty five. He's a big guy out on the mound,
(01:28:52):
and this year he's been great with Frisco. He was
part of a no hitter there against San Antonio as
he threw six no hit innings to start off what
was a three pitcher no hitter there early in the season.
I think what's going to be interesting to see, and
he'll start in a ballpark that is very favorable to pitchers,
is how he'll adjusts to the PCL. And that's that's
(01:29:12):
kind of what you say about all these guys when
they come up from Double A, is that this league
is such a hit or friendly league. You know, how
will he fare in Albuquerque or Las Vegas, two places
that Round Rock goes to in the second half of
the season. But this season with Frisco, he's got a
big fastball, terrific change up. I think what the Rangers
(01:29:34):
are hoping for is that he can come here and
finish this second half of the season strong. The great
thing about where they're at right now is there is
no timeline to get any of these starting pitching prospects
up to the big leagues. They've been the best group
rotation wise in the major leagues this year. And so
it's not like Cole Drake needs to get up there
(01:29:54):
by September and throw and he's got, you know a
little bit of the leeway here to to figure things
out at the Triple A level. But man, he's been
dominant and the strikeout to walk ratio last year was
seventh best in Minor league baseball. So I think we're
going to be looking at a big part of this rotation,
with rotation that has been unsettled the entire season because
(01:30:18):
of just the number of roster moves round rock we've
gone with I think three bullpen days a week. It's
felt like for the last you know, two or three series.
And now you bring a guy like this up, and
that's why I really do think this team has a
chance to win the second half of the season.
Speaker 1 (01:30:34):
A year ago we were talking about two pitchers and
just wondering Hayes and everyone to click Jack Lder and
Kumar Rocker. And as we stand right now, both those
guys on the Rangers forty men roster, and I think lighter,
you know, it's always ability. Could he add that third, fourth,
fifth pitch and he has done so and for Kumar,
can he stay healthy? Can he say consistent with that fastball?
And you know Kumar ended up being coming down and
(01:30:56):
going back up with the Rangers. But Lighter has been
so stable with the Rangers pitching staff are really good
pitching staff this season. How about those two guys and
their ability to be able to stay up on the
big league level after you know, a lot of question
marks from from the around the league, and I was
wondering if those two guys are ever going to make
it to the show.
Speaker 6 (01:31:16):
I think the crazy thing about those two guys. Obviously,
you know they they pitched together in college and all that,
But going into this past offseason, finishing up twenty twenty four,
if you pulled most people, I think they would say, yeah,
Kamar Rocker is the guy Jack Lder were unsure of.
And then in spring training and the start of the season,
(01:31:39):
it's now turned where Jack looks like the guy and
Kamar is still trying to figure things out. Either way,
they both have thrown it well. And for Rocker, you know,
he was supposed to come back down here. He had
a miss you there in Tampa Bay. Didn't go over
to cover the bag. At first, it was a costly mistake.
Bruce Bochi the next day when they decided to option
(01:32:00):
Rocker to the Express in early June, he said it,
he's like, he's got to go work on the fundamentals,
go down there and figure things out. But injuries have
allowed both those guys to stay in the rotation this
season until Rocker went right back up right away. I
think the Rangers originally were planning on him staying down
with the Express for longer, but that was not the case.
(01:32:21):
And he continues to get better and better. He's added
a cutter that's looked really good. You go to the
Jack and his kick change has been a big part
of what he's been able to do, something that he
can offer up against left handed hitters. So both those guys,
I think the injuries unfortunately, you know, John Gray and
Cody Bradford. You would have loved to have them in
the starting rotation to start the year. But it's so
tough for these guys when they're not in a stable
(01:32:43):
spot in the big leagues and they know, you know,
a couple bad outings, you're going back down to Triple A.
I think this is the best thing for both of
them is to be able to have a spot in
the rotation and know, look, if I don't throw it well,
which Jack has had a couple of outings where.
Speaker 2 (01:32:55):
He's been shaky, I'm not going anywhere. I'm staying up here.
Speaker 6 (01:32:58):
And that says a lot for them to have thrown
the baseball as well as they have with this rotation,
as good as it has been, they've been able to
stick there with the rest of those guys and fit
right in. So yeah, I mean, it was fun to
watch them both. Last year we thought maybe we'd get
a couple of starts from each of them. This year,
we're seeing Rocker. I don't think we're seeing Jack lighter
anytime soon. We did see him on a rehab start,
(01:33:19):
and hopefully those will be the only occasions we'll get
Lighter at Del Diamond again in the future.
Speaker 1 (01:33:24):
Last player want to ask you about. He's not in Arlington,
He's not in Round Rock. He's actually in Frisco. Sebastian
Walcott the number one prospect for Texas, batting two forty
six this season, almost three under at bats with Frisco.
Number one prospect again with the Texas Rangers organization. You
know what's you know what was what were the Rangers
hoping to get out of him this season in terms
(01:33:46):
of his development, where you think he's at right now?
And do you think him Do you think he'll stay
in Frisco the rest of the season. Do you see
him being called up perhaps to the big leagues to
Round Rock? Give us your thoughts on Sebastian Walcott.
Speaker 2 (01:33:58):
How much time you got? I think everybody is.
Speaker 6 (01:34:04):
Everyone's talking about him last year and he hadn't gotten
to double A yet. I remember when Ross Fencermaker, who
is the Rangers GM under Chris Young, he came to
Round Rock in twenty twenty three and they had just
signed him out of the Bahamas, as you know, a
sixteen year old or whatever he was at the time,
(01:34:24):
and Ross was just glowing about this kid. And obviously
back then, you know, as fans, we get excited, Oh
it's a prospected guy, but we haven't seen him statesid.
Speaker 2 (01:34:33):
We have no idea who this kid is.
Speaker 6 (01:34:35):
And then he comes over and he starts seeing some
of the clips and you're looking at him. He's six',
four he's, slender but he's put on weight over the
years now and you just you can't wait till he
gets to your ballpark throughout the minor league system and
Specifically Dell diamond with The. Express he's still only, nineteen
which is, crazy and we were saying at the end
(01:34:56):
of last year some of our staff open, around, well
maybe we'll get him next.
Speaker 2 (01:35:02):
SEASON i don't know if it's gonna. Happen by the
end of the.
Speaker 6 (01:35:05):
Year the, NUMBERS i think it's, been you, know an
up and down season four, him which is what tends
to happen with a nineteen year old At DOUBLE. A
i think there's a chance if he goes on a,
tear maybe In august they, say all, right send him
up there for the you, know final three weeks of
the season and see what he's made. Of but like you,
SAID i mean you just you look at who he
(01:35:28):
is as an, athlete and you, know everybody you talk
to says how the baseball sounds just so different coming
off as. BAT i think we'll hopefully see him at
the start of next. Year i'm not gonna say end
of this, year but you, know he has a good
month coming up and it might happen and fans will
able to see him in the Futures game In atlanta
(01:35:48):
in a couple of weeks as he's the only representative
from The rangers to appear in.
Speaker 2 (01:35:52):
That so, YEAH i hope we get him at the
end of the.
Speaker 6 (01:35:55):
SEASON i hope when you when you're Calling express games
In Las, vegas maybe somehow he's he's gonna be up
up with the club by then he Is Ryan colbrey

Pitch express in the Sugar Lands Space Cowboys Round rock
in first place so far in the second half of
the PC. L we'll be back to get ready to
close out today's program here On The Craig Way. Show,
(01:37:15):
okay before we close out today's, program one the rip
through SOME nba news notes In Nuggets briefly, Here DeAndre
ayden looks like he's going to land with The Los Angeles,
lakers As Chris hines reporting That ayton has reportedly agreed
to sign a Contract Los Angeles lakers after buy up
(01:37:40):
from The Portland. Trailblazers ayton's gonna earn thirty four million
dollars next season Between portland AND La, okay, Obviously aydon you,
know overall number one draft pick.
Speaker 2 (01:37:54):
Coming out Of.
Speaker 1 (01:37:54):
Arizona fantastic stuff With, phoenix got to the, finals they
lose To Mo. Wha since he signed that contract, extension
there was always like rumors That ayton's goal, was and
you know this is all, hearsay but his goal, WAS
i want to get that second contract and that's. IT
i just want to be set for life financially And
(01:38:15):
i'm good in his. Productivity since he signed that contract
does not argue against. That he has been a very
underwhelming player From phoenix To, portland where he's been the
last two. Seasons his field goal percentage has dropped every
single season since his twenty twenty one, year the year
(01:38:36):
they lost To milwaukee in THE Nba. FINALS a lot
of his major statistical categories have also. Faded two point
percentage last season was up a, tick but had decreased
the two years before. That his three throw rate is
half of what it was his last season In. Phoenix
(01:38:59):
even his rebounding has has dipped a little. Bit so of,
course you, know he's playing for A portland team that
was not, contending that was, tanking so you, know maybe
that impacted his ability to really care too much in
the basketball. Court his, agent you, know Telling Chris haynes
And shams that he wants to be in a winning.
Situation he'll be on a winning team With Los. Angeles
(01:39:23):
but when you think about the centers that fit well
With luca And lebron And mavericks, fans you know, this
like who is the type of rim runner that fit
well With, Luca Maxi, kleeber you, Know Lively, gafford, right
Is DeAndre? Aiden like those, Guys, no is he a
(01:39:45):
rim running?
Speaker 2 (01:39:46):
Center? No is he a lob? Threat?
Speaker 1 (01:39:49):
No we know he's, athletic he's got the you, know the,
physicality but it's always been between the ears and also
his ability to you, know how much does he really
care about playing? Basketball, so, again considering The lakers had
no other, options this is, actually you, know probably a
great move and they're probably gonna get him pretty cheap
after the buyout as.
Speaker 2 (01:40:08):
Well But DeAndre ayton.
Speaker 1 (01:40:13):
Not really the type of guy that you think is
going to pay very well With, Lucas so we'll see
how this move will pay. Out, AGAIN i think The
lakers starting center as of today before Signing DeAndre ayton
would be you pull up the depth chart here BECAUSE
i think you actually would Be Maxi. Kleber so does.
(01:40:35):
Help but there's they're backup Center Jared, vanderbilt who's more
of a stretch forward than a true. Center so The
laker team with not a lot of depth. Whatsoever but you,
Know cleaver will will. Be we'll be nice with, them
they can stay. Healthy but, Again lakers just a very
(01:40:58):
interesting offseason here as they kind of move away From
Lebron james in gear more towards twenty twenty seven With Luca. Dontons,
Okay Mike brown hired by The New York. KNICKS i
said it when they Fired Tom. Thibodeau you, KNOW i
think it's it's okay sometimes even though you have a
little bit of, success it's okay for both parties to move.
Speaker 2 (01:41:18):
On you.
Speaker 1 (01:41:19):
KNOW i feel like both The knicks And tibbs got
the most out of each other during their runs. Together
The conference finals run was, great BUT i feel like
The knicks kind of reached their peak with him as
the head. Coach so if you're gonna move on from
a head, coach you want to have a guy in, mine,
Right and As texas, fans we know what Del conte
(01:41:39):
does very, well and that's when he's gonna make a coaching.
Move he already kind of has that coach in. Mind
every time he is hired a head, coach he's already
had the other coach in. Place when he was moving
on For Tom, herman he already had start moving on
From David. Pierce he Had slasnego moving on from Kieren.
Aston he Had Fix shaffer moving on From Rodney. Terry
(01:41:59):
he Had Sean miller the next fired, tips who do
they have? Nobody, okay then it was a move, On
but who can we get? Here oh, yeah let's let's
try and go after coaches who are already IN nba coaching,
jobs who aren't gonna want to interview with. US i,
mean they Interviewed Don staley for some, reason but weren't
(01:42:21):
taking it seriously with her Because james don't know there
is no runny rule in THE. Nba not, sure but
they went out and Hired Mike.
Speaker 2 (01:42:28):
Brown of.
Speaker 1 (01:42:29):
Course Mike brown was the head coach for The Cleveland
cavaliers during the run Of. Lebron james reached The Eastern,
conference reached THE Nba finals in six when they got.
Speaker 2 (01:42:39):
Run off the court by The.
Speaker 1 (01:42:40):
Spurs won fifty games and four of his sorry, yeah
in four of his five seasons In, cleveland then moved
on after Uh lebron moved on as. Well was In
Los angeles for two. YEARS i was fired after five
games in the twenty twelve, season went back To cleveland
(01:43:04):
eighty two games, there then was let go assistant coach
for those years During Golden state's. Run goes back To,
sacktown first time With sacktown and ends up with a
winning record In. Sacramento you, know they had the year
two years ago With domos and It's sabonis And i'm
drawing up Like Darren fox, before you, know an early
(01:43:26):
exit in the playoffs and they fire him after thirty
one games this, Season New york hires. HIM i don't,
KNOW i feel Like New york taking a step back
with this. Move he reached the finals through recent The
Eastern Conference. Finals, rather you, know you have a pretty
good roster here with With brunson And bridges and. OG
i don't know About Anthony, towns but if you're going
(01:43:47):
to fire a head, coach winning organizations already have that
next coach in. Mind and it just kind of shows
you That James dolan does not have a winning. Mindset
he does not know what he's. Doing he's flying by
the seat of his. Plants and this is a coaching
higher THAT i think it's, worse you, KNOW i think
going From thibodeau To Mike brown is a worse coaching
(01:44:09):
higher for The New York. Knicks so we'll see what
happened with. That BUT i think you're leaving this. Offseason
if you're A knicks, fan you feel a lot worse
than you, did, hey After game one or two of
The Eastern Conference. Finals the other move real quick here
before we close up the, Program Miles turner signed by
The Milwaukee bucks four, years one hundred and seven million.
(01:44:30):
Dollars indiana offering him three years sixty million dollars low
balling him and he did not want to go to
the luxury Tax they are notorious for napinn luxury tax.
I do wonder if we're going to look back On
game seven When halliburton is clutching his leg After indiana
was a win away from winning AN nba champions for
the first time since moving to THE nba from THE.
(01:44:53):
Aba we're gonna look back at a team that got
so close and now will ever get back to that situation?
Again we'll, see of, Course heliper not for the, Season
Miles turner for a longhand congrats To Miles turner on
getting paid Joining milwaukee team that will have a very
interesting roster coming. Up jannis And turner will be a
lot of fun to watch. Though, okay we'll be back
