All right, Thanks again to Wheels, Patrick Spith for joining
us here to talk a little collective and Texas One
Fund here on the program. I always enjoy having the
opportunity to give them a chance to explain how they're
trying to help out the student athletes at the University
of Texas. Right now, it is time for our d

(00:43):
JC Law injury report, and we do this every Thursday.
If there is indeed an injury report to give to you,
well there is one to give you. The question is
how many guys are on the injury report for Texas
Longhorn football. Well, we're all quite aware of what happened
back a few weeks ago at the start of the

(01:04):
Paul Camp workouts with the knee injury that took CJ.
Baxtrout for the entirety of this coming season. Same story
with an achilles injury for freshmen running back Christian Clark.
Fortunately those are the only two season ending injuries. Fortunately
those are the only two injuries of which to take note.

(01:27):
There have been some guys get banged up a little
bit during the scrimmaging, but Sark said yesterday that everybody
is a go for Saturday afternoon season opener against Colorado State,
and so that's good news. And that is our DJC
law injury update. Very few injuries to report, and that's

(01:48):
a good thing as well. Long worn men's basketball coach
Rodney Terry is getting his team ready for the coming season,
and he had a media availability today.

Speaker 1 (02:00):
Coach Terry was asked.

Speaker 3 (02:01):
First and foremost, uh in this day and age, of
the transfer portal and coaches are asked about it at
every turn, the advantages, the disadvantages, the the ins and
outs of it. What has he learned about the portal?

Speaker 1 (02:15):
Yeah, I think again, you know, the portal is uh.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
You know, we've always had transfers in in college athletics,
you know, and now you have the new uh, the
new lingo the portal, you know, as as it's become
known over the course of the last give or take
three four years. You know, I think I think we've
all have have learned to navigate through the portal. I

(02:39):
think uh uh, even our governing body has has had
to has had to make adjustments time frame. You know,
how long does the when did the portal start? How
long does this stay open?

Speaker 1 (02:51):
Uh? I know for you know, for us, you know,
we we started early uh a process and in and
being able to.

Speaker 2 (03:00):
Manage the portal in terms of developing a database uh
and and developing a formula uh that for us, you know,
from an analytical standpoint, from a character standpoint, you know,
trying to find out if he's the best fit for
us in terms of what we do culture wise, basketball wise,

(03:22):
and things of that nature. That all that matters to
us when we when we when we're looking at a
at a guy from the portal, and so you know,
I think our staff has done a great job of
of uh you know, identifying the right guys uh that
that we try to go after in the portal.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (03:40):
And again a lot of that's based on a lot
of legwork that we've already done on our end in
terms of uh, the things that we use to measure,
you know, how a guy's gonna fit for us.

Speaker 3 (03:56):
You know, the portal take us in the you know,
and the it'll give us too, you know, the Longhorns
are able to get Arthur Calumo had been that most
recently Kansas State and also at Creighton. Cayden Shedrick from
Virginia coming in that last year can to weaver those
guys and like we said, it taken away, you know
Tyrese Hunter and Dylan Mitchell, and what were those discussions

(04:19):
like with those two guys before those two left.

Speaker 2 (04:21):
At every season, you know, you're gonna sit down and
you're gonna visit with every player in your program. You're
gonna sit down with every staff member in your program,
and you're gonna do a self reflection of yourself likewise
in terms of, you know, what could I have done
better this season? What are some of the things we
did really well this season? What are some of the

(04:41):
things that we can continue to improve to enhance our
program to be at the level that we wanted to
be and to have the outcome that we wanted the
end of the year. And so, you know, with that
being said, we sit down and we visit with every
guy and see if you know, if he's happy here,
how much he improved here, is this a place where
he still sees himself wanting to be Because at the

(05:03):
end of the day, if a youngster really wants to
be there, then he's gonna excel and he's gonna continue
to do great things there.

Speaker 1 (05:09):
So you assess all that at the.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
End in terms of your your meeting and UH and
and that at the end of the day counting.

Speaker 1 (05:17):
Equation to to the retention part of it.

Speaker 2 (05:19):
You know, you may have that meeting, maybe another meeting
with the youngster if there's still concerns about some things
that he may have had, you.

Speaker 1 (05:29):
Know, in that meeting moving forward.

Speaker 2 (05:32):
UH. And then you go from there and you build
your team from there.

Speaker 1 (05:35):
You don't go straight to the portal.

Speaker 2 (05:37):
You have to know what you have returning UH and
the guys that you have coming back.

Speaker 1 (05:43):
Before you're able to build your roster out.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
So once we were able to identify on who was
coming back and the retention we were going to have, UH,
then we started working on trying to find guys that
compliment our complement our recruiting class and the retention of
the players.

Speaker 3 (06:02):
Well, speaking of the recruiting class, Trey Johnson one of
the guys that folks are very very exciting, excited about.
With all freshmen, obviously there is a learning curve. How
about the curve for Johnson? Well, you know what Josh
I think.

Speaker 2 (06:14):
Uh, you know, Tray's one of those guys that he's
kind of an old throwback guy. You know, we had
a guy like that, you know, a few years back
when I was here.

Speaker 1 (06:23):
Uh, And I'm not liking.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
In Trey Johnson to say he's gonna be Kevin Durant,
but he has some Kevin Durant similarities in terms of
he has a great work ethic for a young player.
You know, you know, he loves being in the gym.
I don't have to call Trey Johnson to say Trey
come to the gym. Trey's coming to the gym on
his own multiple times during the day. And so he
is one of those guys that has a has a

(06:45):
very very uh high work ethic.

Speaker 1 (06:47):
And loves being in the gym.

Speaker 2 (06:49):
So, you know, when you're obsessed with it, then you
have you have an opportunity.

Speaker 1 (06:53):
To be pretty good at what you do.

Speaker 2 (06:54):
But you know, even that, you know, he's still a
young player. He's gonna have some growing curves and just
like all young young players, Kevin Durant had growth curves
here at Texas as well. Even as as talented players
he was as a freshman he's still he's still going
to have you know, some freshman moments that time in
terms of still growing, whether that be from a playing standpoint,

(07:19):
from a mental standpoint, uh and just from a just
still growing as a young player and a young kid.

Speaker 4 (07:26):
And and and just a quick follow up. The last
time we talked to you was in Florida. We talked
about Nick Cody. You know, you said you were optimistic
that he might be ready like September ish. What is
his status right now, Rodney.

Speaker 2 (07:37):
Yeah, you know what We're we're going, Uh, we're real
cautious with Nick because Nick Cody has a high ceiling
and being a really good player in the future. He
has a he has a great basketball frame. You know,
he's a guy that he was one of those kind
of a late bloomer a little bit. Uh So, so
his best basketball is way ahead of him. So the
last thing that we would we would we would not

(07:59):
do here rush him out to the floor too quick.
He had a significant injury. It wasn't wasn't one where
you know, you just put him right back out the
in Halmes way. So we've been very cautious with him.

Speaker 1 (08:10):
He didn't do anything with.

Speaker 2 (08:11):
Us this summer, and it'll probably be a good portion
of the early part of the fall before he has
really hard contact or have contact for that matter. But
we're in a position where, you know, uh, we don't
want to rush a really good player and put him
in harm's way because he has a very bright feature

(08:31):
here in Texas.

Speaker 1 (08:32):
So you know we're gonna we're gonna move really slow
with him.

Speaker 3 (08:35):
I have some comments from Rodney Terry, Longhorn men's basketball coach.
We'll hear some more from coach Cherry next hour, as
well as Steve Sarksian and Roger Wallace will joined us
to talk about their high school football coverage and the
Long Horn football coverage that they have as well. We'll
do all that more when we continue on sports Radio
AM thirteen under the zone of the iHeart Radio app.
