Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good afternoon, and glad to have you with us here
on the Craigway Show. I am Cameron Parker filling in
for Craig Way on this Wednesday edition of Today's show.
Craig Way and the Texas baseball team on their way
to Hoover, Alabama for the SEC Baseball Tournament, where your
Texas Longhorns are the number one seed after winning the

(00:22):
SEC regular season championship. A lot to get you on
today's program. We're gonna talk a lot of Texas baseball
on today's show. Got to hear from Jim Sloshnegel, Rylan Galvaughan,
and Luke Harrison throughout today's program. Hopefully we'll be joined
by Craig Way in the four o'clock hour. He'll be surprised,
but leave the team a little bit delayed in getting

(00:45):
off the ground here in Austin, so when the team
touches down and Craig is available, we'll check in with him.
Just south of Birmingham, Alabama, where Texas will play in
their first ever SEC postseason tournament in college baseball. Starting
off tomorrow two forty five pm airtime, Texas taking on
possibly a different couple different opponents, We'll see what happens today.

(01:10):
Could be Tennessee, who currently is leading Alabama right now.
In today's contest, we will find out whether it will
be the Crimson Tide or the volunteers come to Marble.
Check in with Craig Way throughout today's show, we will
check in with Texas softball head coach Mike White. That'll
be coming up next on today's program. Able to chat

(01:33):
with coach earlier today as Texas takes on Clemson in
the NCAA Super Regionals. How about this, Texas with six
appearances in the supers, six straight years, all six under
head coach Mike White. What a job the coach White
and his staff have done in such a short time

(01:55):
in Austin, coming from a conference in the Big Twelve
that featured Oklahoma, a perennial sompball contender, then now joins
the SEC, a ridiculous conference with the top twenty five
just littered with SEC opponents. And you know we did
see a couple of those upset last weeknd LSU and

(02:15):
the number one overall national seed Texas A and M.
The first time in softball history the number one team
did not advance out of the regional, So we will
talk to coach White about preparing for the Clemson Tigers.
The eleven seed Texas has not seen clem sin since
the twenty twenty two season, so two opponents not very
familiar with each other, but get coaches thoughts on that

(02:38):
and also the play of rees Atwood Teaking Cavan, Mia
Scott all three players named All Americans by Softball American.
How about taking Cavan's performance against UCF on Sunday, complete game, shutout,
all think all the Knights, what a fantastic job. And
rees Atwood just keeps on hitting bombs. So that'll be
a fun conversation Throughout today's program. Kevin Robbins from the

(03:01):
pgatour dot com will stop by talk a little PJ
tour Scottie Scheffler's third major championship victory and now looks
to win three straight.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
Could it be done?

Speaker 3 (03:13):
This week?

Speaker 1 (03:13):
Up in Fort Worth at Colonial the Charles Swap Challenge.
Scotty has not yet won this event. He came close
lost in a playoff to Sam Burns. Some of y'all
remember Sam Burns draining that what like fifty foot putt
in the playoff to knock off Scotty Scheffler, So could
Scotty win three straight PGA Tour fans, could we see

(03:35):
maybe Jordan Speif who has won here at Fort Worth,
who did not play very well last weekend and show it?

Speaker 2 (03:42):
Could we see Jordan maybe make a run this week?

Speaker 1 (03:44):
And we're gonna get Kevin's thoughts on that, his top storylines,
and also trying to put into context what Scotty Scheffler
is doing, y'all. He is joining the likes of Tiger
and Jack and everything he does. A few just absolutely
absurd stats we'll get to with Kevin trying to make
sense what Scotty Scheffler is doing. And a fun little

(04:08):
line that FanDuel has put out the odds makers on
how many major championships could Scotty Scheffler get too in
his career before twenty forty. He's at three now, of course,
Tiger at fifteen, Jack at eighteen.

Speaker 2 (04:21):
Could Scotty Scheffler join those ranks now? Possible?

Speaker 4 (04:26):
Right?

Speaker 2 (04:27):
Kevin may think differently, So we'll get to that on
today's show.

Speaker 1 (04:31):
And of course we want to be we want to
hear from you guys, so please join us on our
tex SA one texta where Texas to eight one, five,
three zero, followed by your message of course, if you're
listening on the free iHeart app. If not, go ahead,
please download it and leave us a talkback message. Here
are your thoughts on today's program, whether it's Texas Baseball,
Texas softball, NBA, NHL Game one the Western Conference Finals

(04:56):
tonight Dallas Stars hosting the Edmonton Oilers in a match
of last year's Western Conference Finals. Real quick, we'll start
off with a little updates from Hoover, Alabama. Yesterday we
saw Alabama advanced to the second round. We saw Oklahoma
knock off Kentucky, no surprise there, and we saw Florida
handles South Carolina, no surprise there. So today's action the

(05:19):
first game Texas A and M, the fourteen seed, must
win for them for their postseason hopes, taking on Mississippi State,
the eleven seed, and it was all A and M
and this one ten sorry, nine to nothing was the
final score. Ryan Prager went five and a third, no
runs allowed, just four hits. Bear Harrison two for five

(05:40):
for A and M. And what we saw from the
Bulldogs is something we might see more of so in
these postseason tournaments where the Bulldogs kind of treated as
arrest day, sat some of their best pitchers in this contest. Meanwhile,
A and M, who had had to win this game,

(06:01):
played it like it was so and we saw A
and M just knock off. Must to be say, nine
to nothing. So the Bulldogs, you know, they're they're in
a good position to make the SEC or sorry, to
make the NCAA tournament.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
A and M they probably have to win the whole thing.

Speaker 1 (06:18):
So what we see other teams like Mississippi State, who
know their spot in the NCAA Tournament, worried about rest,
worried about fatigue, worried about injuries, kind of you know,
treat it as a throwaway game, which I think is
what we saw from the Bulldogs today. Knowing that they're

(06:40):
placed in the tournament is already solidified. Now for Texas,
very interesting to see what Slash will do tomorrow. Knowing
that Texas as a number one team in the SEC.
You know we're seeing in the rankings top five for sure.
D one Baseball currently projecting them as the number one
national seed. Is schloss? Does he want to maybe keep

(07:05):
this team healthy intact? A lot of injuries for the
long courts this season, a lot of a lot of
wear and tear. So for Tennessee, a team that right
now on the outside looking in of being a top
sixteen team, you know, they're playing for a spot to
host a regional. Texas, I think we feel pretty good
about their chances of hosting not only a regional, but

(07:27):
being a top eight seed and hosting a super regional.
So interested to see how Schlosh will treat tomorrow's game.

Speaker 2 (07:36):
Now, it is a Thursday game.

Speaker 1 (07:37):
So you know we saw last Thursday against Oklahoma Kate
being start for Texas. It wasn't Ruger Riojas. We'll see
the same thing come tomorrow. Will you try and you know,
get more days off for Luke Harrison. Remember, if Texas
wins Thursday deal, they will not play Friday. They will
have a day off, so it'll be a Saturday start,
which of course typically is the day that Luke ca

(08:00):
Grrison goes anyway, Saturday. So we'll hear from Jim Slowsnegel,
we'll hear from Luke Harrison and Ryland Galvan also on
today's program. The big news coming from the NFL meetings
today the touch bush not banned, not banned, needing twenty
four votes to be banned, only got twenty two, so

(08:21):
fails by two votes and the Toush Bush will live
on at least for another season. After not receiving enough
votes at the spring meetings in Minnesota today, Philadelphia Eagle
center Jason Kelsey, retired center and team owner Jeffrey Lurie,
actually flew up the Minnesota and lobbied the owners for

(08:43):
keeping the place, so the ten teams to vote against
the proposal to basically voting to keep the play legal. Obviously,
the Philadelphia Eagles, Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Jackson Well, Jackuars,
Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, New Orleans Saints, New York Jets.

(09:05):
In Tennessee Titans all voted against the proposal, again needed
twenty four votes to pass. It was submitted by Green
Bay this season got twenty two. Interestingly enough, Shane Stiken,
the coldt head coach, and Jonathan Gannon, the Cardinals head coach,

(09:26):
both of course, who were Eagles coordinators when Philadelphia lost
to Kansas City and the Super Bowl two years ago,
both voted in favor of the band, and Steiken actually
previously had express support for the Toush push play last
month of the annual league meeting, but it will continue

(09:46):
if you follow Philadelphia on Twitter, which hopefully you don't,
especially if you're a Cowboys fan. Posted a tweet with
the words push on followed by an image of the
Toush push. So Philadelphia taking advantage and possibly trolling the
Green Bay Packers. Now remember Philly in Green Bay opened
last season in Brazil. They'll play each other this year

(10:09):
week ten Monday Night Football, so imagine we'll see the
touch push. Kelsey, by the way, declined the comment on
the vote Wednesday, saying I'm not here to talk to
the media. Jeffrey Lurie said he was pleased with the
result of vote but did not have any further comments.
Kelsey went on the New Heights podcast that he host

(10:31):
with his brother, said he wasn't concerned about the band
of the touch push as he was about peering up
misconceptions that opposes an injury risk and was partially responsible
for his decision to end his career. Well, touch Push
will live on at least through the twenty twenty five season,
so if you're sick of it, I'm sorry. But on

(10:52):
the other hand, If you are a Jialen Hurts Fantasy
football owner, then you probably are in favor of this
vote to come here on today's program, as we get
ready to talk Texas softball, what will it take the
Longhorns to advance to the Women College World Series in
Oklahoma City.

Speaker 2 (11:09):
Well, we'll talk to.

Speaker 1 (11:10):
Head coach Mike White about it up next on the
Greigway Show on the free iHeart Radio app I Keep
Forgetting by Michael McDonald. We're not forgetting that. Texas Softball
hosting the NCAA Super Regionals this weekend. First game Tomorrow
Thursday night, seven forty five pm airtime on Retro Austin.
Andrew Haynes on the call all three games. If necessary,

(11:33):
we'll be at seven forty five pm eight o'clock first
pitch this week and all on Retro Austin.

Speaker 2 (11:39):
As the Texas Longhorns in.

Speaker 1 (11:41):
Their six consecutive supers all under head coach Mike White,
are hosting the eleven seed Clemson Tigers, and now please
to be joined by Texas softball head coach Mike White. Coach,
really appreciate the time here on this busy afternoon. It's
your sixth consecutive appearance to the Super Regionals here at
Texas All six with us the head coach. I know

(12:04):
you and your staff and your team have bigger goals
to accomplish this season, but you must be very proud
of the standard that you built in such a short time.

Speaker 5 (12:11):
Here in Austin. Yeah, exactly. It is about the standard.

Speaker 6 (12:14):
You kind of always win a national championship, but you're
looking at consistency and then that certainly helps with recruiting
as well, and that's the lifeblood of any program. And
so if we can show consistency and the ability to
always kind of be around at top eight, top sixteen,
you can certainly help with everything.

Speaker 1 (12:31):
Going back to the regionals for just a moment, you
made quick work of all three of your opponents last week,
and you wonted different fashions.

Speaker 5 (12:38):
It was different time.

Speaker 1 (12:39):
It was timely hitting against Eastern Illinois and then the
floodgates opened up against Michigan's six home runs and then
taking Kavan's shut out of UCF. How pleased were you
with your team's bounced back after that early exit in
the SEC tournament.

Speaker 5 (12:51):
Yeah, definitely.

Speaker 6 (12:52):
At the end of the season for US, the regular
SEC season and then the tournament wasn't the best. We
know that we didn't play our brand of softball. We
struggled somewhat, especially with hitting a little bit down the
bottom of the lineup. Pitching struggled a little bit, and
you know, you gotta have you gotta have those phases
if you're going to win, you know. So the ability
to be able to get back and play good defense,

(13:14):
to get good pitching and some hitting throughout the lineup
really helped, and it was positive thing for us going
into the Super Regional.

Speaker 1 (13:21):
How much of a boost do you think it was
for Cavan's confidence to go out against UCF and pitch
an absolute gem.

Speaker 7 (13:27):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (13:27):
She hadn't pitched a full game or a complete game
in quite a while, so it was really good to
get that seven inning win, you know, a shot out
especially uh and and just to throw just over one
hundred pitches, I know, and some of the other outings.
She'd thrown some some pretty hifty numbers in the games,
like some thirty something pitch innings, and that's not like
her at all. So it was good to see who

(13:49):
take control of the game and use all of her
pitches in an effective fashion.

Speaker 1 (13:53):
You mentioned the loss of Texas A and M to
exit the SEC tournament. Do you think that provided your
team a little more motivation heading into regionals?

Speaker 6 (14:03):
Well, we always talk about the fact that the game
doesn't know and it's going to rule the team that
plays the best, and you've got to be with your
feed out. You know a lot of cliches, but it
is really true. If you've been around the game long enough,
you know that anything can happen. And the reason they
play these things, I mean, you see it in the
basketball match madness all the time, and now with the
parody in our game in softball fast pitch, it's it's

(14:23):
really getting more that way. I mean, I don't think
there's a really clear leader right now. There's been a
three or four number one teams in the country. It's
telling you something about the parody of the game right now.

Speaker 1 (14:35):
You had such a tough schedule, obviously, the SEC slate
is ridiculous. Is the best conference in softball? You know,
Hidsight's twenty twenty. But looking back at the exit, do
you think you know what, it wasn't such a bad
thing that our role has got a couple extra days
of rest, especially after seeing what happened to A and
M this past weekend.

Speaker 5 (14:52):
Yeah, that's a good point.

Speaker 6 (14:53):
I mean it was hot down there, you know, but
as it was, the final got rained out anyway, so
it no matter it was just that same amount of games,
But it is it is a load, especially with the travel,
you know, having to take three plane flights instead of
just the one normally with the big twelve. You know,
it can play on you a little bit over the
length of a season, and we certainly felt that way

(15:15):
in the Not maybe it's so much physically, but mentally
it's really a big grind, playing tough competition week in
and week out.

Speaker 1 (15:23):
A and M is the first number one seed to
lose in the regionals in softball history. Did you your staff,
your team, you know, watch the games against Liberty. Do
you set in the highlights and just remind them that, hey,
no matter what your record is, no matter what your
seed is, anything can happen this time.

Speaker 3 (15:36):
Of the year.

Speaker 6 (15:37):
Well, definitely, And you know, as a as a coach
who always going you know, if you feel pretty comfortable
the four run lead going into the bottom of the
seventh and you know that evaporated pretty quickly and they
were like a walk away from losing in the first game,
you know, so you know, hats off to Liberty. I
mean they brought it. They were in a hostile environment.

(15:57):
It's not easy to play at A and M. We
got a raucous crowd and it was a tough playing
against the team that we've played. And they were awesome
against us. I mean they hit the ball like they
knew executly what was coming. And they've played pitched well
and played good defense. But pressure can do funny things,
and you know, that's what happened. I think in that situation,

(16:19):
maybe they kind of overlooked them a little bit. I
don't know for sure, but you know, they certainly were
a bit of team on paper, but we don't play
games on paper.

Speaker 1 (16:28):
Now you're read the face of Clemson Tigers here in
the Super Regionals this weekend, Austin opponent you haven't seen
since twenty twenty two. Early impressions of John Ripman squad
as you prepare for the Super Regionals.

Speaker 6 (16:39):
Yeah, they've got some speed at the top and the bottom.
You've got a lot of left hand hitters. They got
five hitters, left handers that can do some different things
and right hand power. They will go to the short
game if they need to, They've got some popping their bats,
and then they've got, you know, three pitches that are
capable if we start chasing. You know, two of the

(17:00):
pitches are pretty comfortable to what Michigan had, So that's
kind of a bonus for us as far as having
seen that type of pitching. But you know, they're really
good with their locations and we're going to be prepared
for that. They're not going to give us a lot
down in the middle, so we're gonna have to work
for everything we get.

Speaker 1 (17:14):
We get top twenty in the country in terms of hits,
top twenty in home runs, average on was about one
and a half per game, with the same number is
all one point thirty nine. How do you think your
pitching stacks up with Clemson sitters.

Speaker 5 (17:26):
Well, we're got to find out without a doubt.

Speaker 8 (17:29):
You know that.

Speaker 5 (17:30):
You know, it really is about keeping the ball in
the ballpark.

Speaker 6 (17:32):
I mean, last weekend, the wind was blowing out and
you could see that there was a lot of home
runs hit in our regional, whereas it Clemson the wind
was blowing in a little bit.

Speaker 5 (17:40):
So it's kind of hard to compare the two regionals.

Speaker 6 (17:43):
But you know, certainly, you know it's about us keeping
the ball in the ballpark and you know, making sure
they don't get crooked numbers. You know, I think Achilles
Heels been a little bit of give up the walk,
then a hit, then a home run, and we can't
get into those kind of deficits against a team like Clemson.

Speaker 1 (17:58):
You have three players name to All Americans my Softball
America reesat with first team All American at catcher Mia Scott,
third base Ticking Cavan appointed to the second team. It's
the second straight season for Reese where she's received postseason honors,
also selected as a National Player of the Year first
Team All American in twenty twenty four. She was incredible

(18:19):
in the regional How proud of you of what Reese
is doing? And do you guys have like any I
don't want to use the word bets, but every time
that ball leaves the park at Red and Charlene Macombs Field,
I just think about all the cars that are parked
in between the outfield fence and that graduate house sing
there is there any sort of like.

Speaker 2 (18:37):
You know, games being played to see who can smash
the windshield?

Speaker 5 (18:41):
Well, yeah, there's a differently.

Speaker 6 (18:43):
Some signs along the outfield fans that say packet your
on risk, And when Reese's buy and and Joli and
several of the others are up, it's definitely packet your
own risk, you know, because they're they're launching the bowl
out of there bit.

Speaker 5 (18:55):
You know, it's it's it's great that they're on ad
team and doing that for us.

Speaker 1 (19:00):
Tea, and we've talked about Teak and performance against UCF.
You're also named the second team All American by Softball America.
To see her growth under you, I mean you must
be super proud of what she's been able to do.
And if she can continue that confidence and that strong
pitching the Super Regions, I'm sure you feel really great
about your chances heading up to Oklahoma City.

Speaker 5 (19:20):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (19:20):
What you like about Teagan is her consistency and her composure.

Speaker 5 (19:24):
She doesn't get too high, doesn't get too low.

Speaker 6 (19:26):
You know, we're working on some things with her, and
she's developed a new pitch that well, not a new pitch,
but she's developed a drop bowl to compliment her good
rise ball and her changeups always been really good. So
she's got the three main pitches and now it's just
a matter of commanding design a little a little bitter
than what she's shown or done, and then just trusting
her stuff. I think sometimes she gives a hitters a

(19:47):
little too much credit and tries the perfect pitch a
little bit, you know, instead of just trusting her. Hey,
I'm teaking Cavan And that's the next step for her
is to just really take control of the mound and
you know, insert her influence over the hitters.

Speaker 1 (20:01):
And then MIAs Scott, of course, a second team All Americans,
had what probably the best Texas softball careers in program
history over this past week, and just a second Longhorn
with three hundred or more career hits entering a great
joining Jane Jefferson, who of course has stand out at Texas.
How about the consistency that Mia Scott's been able to

(20:22):
have during her softball career at Texas.

Speaker 6 (20:24):
Yeah, she's just a natural player, you know, someone that
we're going to miss a lot, And just like Janney Jefferson,
you don't get make any more of those, You just
get into a way to deal with them. But we
do have some exciting players coming in through the pipeline
that can hopefully attempt to fill those shoes. I mean,
they're not necessarily going to but certainly this the future
looks bright. We've got a great recruiting class coming in

(20:46):
and we're working hide on the now the transfer portal.

Speaker 5 (20:49):
You know, so that's this open game as well.

Speaker 6 (20:52):
But you know, MIA's accomplishment's you know, stand out without
a doubt, and uh, you know, it's almost like she
could will a home run that and she wanted, you know,
if you really wanted to, but she used to consent
to hit those doubles in the gaps and now she's
leading the program in doubles.

Speaker 2 (21:08):
It became the best three series because Clemson Thursday.

Speaker 1 (21:11):
All three games, including if necessary, Game three, would be
eight o'clock Central time Thursday Friday, ESPN two also on
Retro Austin on the free iHeart radio app.

Speaker 2 (21:20):
We talked about it before we started this interview.

Speaker 3 (21:22):
Coach.

Speaker 2 (21:22):
Being able to play in primetime is beneficial for a
couple of reasons.

Speaker 5 (21:28):
One the weather.

Speaker 1 (21:28):
Obviously it's pretty hot here in Austin this time of
the year, but also allows you know, fans to come
out and really pack right and Charlie McCombs field this weekend.

Speaker 6 (21:37):
Yeah, and if you got to remember, even though that
may say it's sold out, there's still standing room on
the outside fence is there. You can go out and
get a really good look and a good feel for
the game. I'm just going back to last year's Taxas
A and M series. You didn't want to miss that one.
That was a great opportunity to watch a great series,
and I'm pretty sure this one's going to be the same.
The place we'll be jumping with the IO horns will
be blowing, and there'll be some crazies out there. So

(21:59):
we're looking forward to it and we need a little
support we can get.

Speaker 5 (22:02):
We are as well.

Speaker 1 (22:03):
Coach, good luck this weekend and hope to see you
up in Okasee for the Woman's College World Series here soon.
Thanks Camerin appreciate you and go holcome Thanks coach, Hey,
appreciate it. Guys, thanks so much, Thanks Cameron, Yes, sir,
all right, you'll take care. Thanks Chris, appreciate it, of.

one texture said, and three have been signed by the Saints.

Speaker 2 (24:11):
That's the text of the day right there.

You know, at the end of the hour one, I
touched on, you know, the softball schedule, and is it okay?
You know, is it actually beneficial for teams to exit
the postseason tournament early their conference tournament before beginning their
postseason tournament? How about this Western Conference semi finals spen
the Thunder. The Nuggets went seven games, right, and the
travel from OKC to Denver isn't too bad. But game

(25:23):
seven was Sunday, one day of rest for oka See
before game one of the Western Conference Finals began the
Eastern Conference Finals, which the semi finals matchup ended what
like a week ago.

Speaker 2 (25:36):
Then I'll play till tonight.

Speaker 1 (25:37):
So OKAC coming in off of a day of rest,
Minnesota a couple of days rest after taking care of
business against the Warriors in five games, so you figure, okay,
Minnesota will be the more rested team.

Speaker 2 (25:51):
You know, they should look a lot better than OKC
for the first quarter. They did.

Speaker 1 (25:57):
Really SGA's just willed oka See to keep it a
three three point game, four point game at halftime. Julius
Randall was phenomenal in the first half five o was
the five of six three pointers. He had twenty points
at halftime. Unstoppable. Yeah, second half a different story for Minnesota.
Okay se would outscore the Timberwolves thirty two to eighteen

(26:19):
in the third quarter. Their defense really stepped up in
the fourth quarter, outscore Minnesota thirty eight to twenty two.
Would go on the win one fourteen to eighty eight,
and for me, the story of the game was Okay
C's defense. Minnesota just did not look comfortable at times
against Okay Sees defense, especially in the second half. Randal

(26:43):
at twenty in the first half, just twenty eight points overall,
only eight points in the second half. Anthony Edwards only
eighteen total points. His plus minus divential his net rating
minus twenty three, and was the worst player on the
floor the t Wolves last night. Based off of that metric,
five to thirteen overall, three of eight from beyond the

(27:03):
three point line. Minnesota was shoot thirty four percent overall,
twenty nine percent from beyond the arc, and their role
players did not show up in this game. Dante Divinceenzo
three of fourteen, three to twelve from beyond the three
point line nine points. Overall, he was a minus twenty
Nikill Alexander Walker, cousin of SGA, three of eleven overall,

(27:25):
two and nine from beyond the three point line eight points.
He was a minus fourteen plus minus differential. Nas Reed,
who has been a killer of OKC the last couple
of years, one of eleven, oh of seven from beyond
the three point line. He had a couple of shots
in the fourth quarter where the game was out of hand.
He was just throwing up three pointers from about thirty feet.

(27:46):
He was had four points total, a minus twenty one
plus minus net differential. Mike Conley two of eight overall. Really,
Randall and Edwards were the only two guys to consistently
show up Colbert only twenty one minutes. It'll be fun
to watch the matchup between Gobert versus Chet and Hartenstein

(28:06):
for OKC thirty one points out of Shay. And It's
an interesting conversation because if you base go off of
Twitter last night, you'll think the entire game was basically
just a free throw battle SGA in the refs against Minnesota.

Speaker 2 (28:19):
I did not get that vibe watching the game at all.

Speaker 1 (28:21):
What my vibe was is that OKAC was the more
aggressive team, the more physical team, the more attacking team.
I only took twenty one three pointers, Okay, how many
do you think Minnesota took fifty one? Fifty one? What
does that tell you, guys? It tells you that Minnesota
is settling selling for shots. They're not attacking the basket.

(28:43):
So when you put up fifty one shots from the
three point line out of your eighty three, I meanwhile
OKC only twenty one shots from the three point line
out of eighty two, it tells you that OKAC was
attacking the paint a lot more. That's over what sixty
percent of your shots in the paint possibly versus Minnesota,
which is taking over sixty percent of their shots from

(29:06):
me on the three point line. So of course, of
course okay See will take more three throws. And by
the way, it wasn't like a ridiculous metric of oka
See outshooting Minnesota the line like forty to ten. They
took twenty six three throws, Minnesota took twenty one. That's
not a crazy margin at all. That that's pretty even,
especially for a team that spent most of the game

(29:27):
attacking the paint. So my big takeaway from from game
one was not SGA and.

Speaker 2 (29:34):
People call him a free throw merchant.

Speaker 1 (29:36):
Okay, Okay, my biggest takeaway was okay See's defense.

Speaker 2 (29:42):
Minnesota was not ready for it. And also okay See
was more physical.

Speaker 1 (29:47):
They threw the punches, they attacked the paint, and for Minnesota,
you're just gonna stand in bomb three pointers. And again
that's the issue that a lot of people had with
the Boston Celtics, right they would take a lot of
three pointers, a lot lot of bad shots, a lot
of settling from Minnesota.

Speaker 2 (30:02):
That can't be your blueprint.

Speaker 4 (30:04):
Now.

Speaker 1 (30:04):
Of course, maybe if Minnesota shoots Okay, they shot twentyuve
percent last night, maybe if they shoot fifty, it's a
different ballgame.

Speaker 2 (30:12):
It's a closer game.

Speaker 1 (30:13):
It was a ten point game going in the fourth
quarter before OKC completely took over.

Speaker 2 (30:18):
Okay.

Speaker 1 (30:20):
Anthony Edwards, who is one of my favorite players in
the league. I love his personality. He's an athletic freak.
There's a chance he's going to endure life with a
posterization any second of the game. I love his ability
to shoot and score from anywhere on the court, whether

(30:42):
it's attacking the lane three point shot. You know a
lot of comparisons to Michael Jordan, and I see it too,
And of course that's where sometimes it can be unfair,
especially if you go into a series like this NBA Finals,
birth at stake in your comparing a player to the
greatest of all time, so unfair.

Speaker 2 (31:05):
It's unfair to expect Ant to be like mj.

Speaker 1 (31:08):
But I think we can expect Ant to take the
next step in this series if he's going to be
the next superstar. Right in between the Semis in the
Western Conference Finals, there was a lot of talk about
Anthony Edwards being the next face of the league, right
and he can be there, especially if he takes Minnesota
to the NBA Finals. The last year, remember Minnesota lost

(31:29):
in five games to Dallas, and it felt like Ant
did not play well in that series. I don't think
anyone in Minnesota played well in that series, but especially
Anthony Edwards. And now was like, Okay, he's a young kid.
Let's see last year, I think he was what twenty
was he twenty four? Last season he was twenty two,

(31:52):
twenty two. He's a young kid. But Jordan didn't win
his first ring til twenty eight. Twenty nine years old.
So I think the natural thought is, okay, he guys,
but up to the Western Conference Finals, you got to
come back next season. Here they are again in the
Western Conference Finals. He's going to take that next step.
This is what I mean looking at last season's fourth
quarters against Dallas Mavericks, this is where I wanted anton

(32:15):
and Edwards to step up. Game one against Dallas home game,
Dallas wins one eight, one oh five. In the fourth quarter,
Edwards two of four six points, both coming on a
pair of three pointers, two rebounds and assist to steal
a turnover. Did not take a shot for the final
two and a half minutes. No free throws either. Okay,

(32:38):
you kind of want more out of your number one guy.
Game two, you're at home, bounce back. You lost Game one,
expecting a big game from Antony Andwards. Fourth quarter, Here
we go, Dallas wins one O nine to one O eight.
Ant took two shots eight points overall, with four of
those coming at the stripe, so a little bit more
aggressiveness to assist, but two turnovers, including a killer turnover

(33:01):
twelve point eight seconds left to go in the clock.
Edwards kind of drives in h picks up his dribble
and then throws the ball out of bounds, and then
Luca would end up hitting the three pointer to win
the game. Okay, two not so good fourth quarters for
a game three on the road, down two nothing expect more.

Speaker 5 (33:22):
Huh.

Speaker 1 (33:23):
Dallas wins by nine one sixteen seven. Anthonyawards again two
of three. Took three shots, four points, one assist, one rebound,
one steal a turnover. Two of those four points, by
the way, came with fifteen seconds left with Minnesota was
down by eleven and the game was over with need more.
Game four, Minnesota wins this one one five, one hundred.

(33:46):
This is actually the one game that Anthony Ederwards took
more shots in the fourth quarter, three to seven overall
six points. Had a huge jumper with forty seconds left
to go in the game, put Many up by five,
three assists, five rebounds, two turn on a much better
Game four. But then Game five, I think it was
close to a ten point no, sorry, might have been

(34:07):
a twenty point game going in the fourth quarter. Edwards
three three, seven points, two rebounds of three thrown assists.
So my take away from those fourth quarters he did
not have a fourth quarter rescore double edgit points. The
only time he took more than four shots in the
quarter was the game they won. Probably an indicator he's

(34:27):
be more aggressive. How many he had Let's see one, two, three, four.
Four of the five games he did not have more
than two rebounds. That can't happen. Assists wise, one game

(34:48):
he had more than one assist. Two assists, sorry, the
game they won. So for me, Anthony Edwards going into
this series against ok see especially in the fourth quarter,
because they're going to be tight games, you can be
aggressive of this same time, be a playmaker. Be like
Mike right, spread the ball around. If your SHOT's not
going in, attack the basket, draw three throws. That's what
Michael Jordan was so good at it. It's what Lebron

(35:10):
is good at. Right, get to the line. If your
jumper's not there, Kobe two, get to the line, draw
contact and get to the stripe and if not, crash
the glass. Okay, see last night Game one. You're down
by ten points. He left for the first half. Okay,
he goes on this big run the third quarter. Okay,
fourth quarter, Now is your time, Anthony Edwards are down

(35:32):
by ten points.

Speaker 2 (35:33):
What are you gonna do. You're gonna score zero points?

Speaker 7 (35:36):
Oh of one.

Speaker 1 (35:36):
He took one shot in the entire fourth quarter, guys,
one shot. He had more turnovers than he did points,
two turnovers, only two rebounds in one assist. If they
edwards plays like this in every fourth quarter. If it's
going to be a ten point game or less, OKAC

(35:57):
wins this series in five games. Up next, we're gonna
hear from Texas baseball coach Jim Slashnangle. How are the
Longhorns handling this SEC tournament in Hoover, Alabama.

Speaker 2 (36:09):
That's coming up next on the Craig Way Show.

Speaker 1 (36:11):
As Texas will either host or rather face Tennessee or
Alabama in tomorrow's semi final matchup in the SEC Baseball Tournament.
Tennessee currently leading Alabama five to two right now where
that will play one of that game will face Texas
tomorrow two forty five airtime, three o'clock first pitch. You
can listen to that on the free iHeart radio app

(36:34):
either on thirteen hundred The Zone or one O three
one FM, Austin's eighty station. Craig Way will have the call.
Jim Slashnangele did visit with the media earlier this morning
to preview the SEC Baseball Tournament. So we're gonna go
ahead and bring that to you uninterrupted. Coach Slash, the

(36:55):
SEC Coach of the Year.

Speaker 3 (36:57):
Yeah, welcome everybody looking for for to getting down to Hoover.

Speaker 8 (37:01):
SEC Tournament's always a elite experience, uh for the players
and staff and fans, and and excited to be a
part of the first Texas team to get to play
in the SEC tournament.

Speaker 3 (37:13):
So hopefully they have safe travels and play well this week.
Can you take us back to the moment that you've
found out.

Speaker 2 (37:20):
You were a SEC Coach of the Year.

Speaker 9 (37:21):
What was that like?

Speaker 3 (37:23):
Uh, it it was surprising.

Speaker 8 (37:27):
And but but it was cool to have the have
have kimball and the players tell you so, h you
know those things are you know, they're reflective of the
team and uh not that that's never been an individual
goal of mine, but when the team goals are met,
individual things happen, whether it be things for Dylan or
the other guys on the team.

Speaker 3 (37:45):
So I've got a great staff.

Speaker 8 (37:48):
Most important thing any leader or coach ever does is
is the people they hire. And so I'm very thankful
for our coaching staff. Support staff and but it it.
It was a cool moment, a lot of fun and uh,
this team's fun to be around.

Speaker 3 (38:02):
I really enjoyed it. And then telling Dylan that he
was a SEC freshman after year the angle.

Speaker 2 (38:07):
But when he got like you can't really see.

Speaker 3 (38:08):
His face or what was his react, Well, I set
him up a little bit.

Speaker 4 (38:11):
Uh.

Speaker 8 (38:13):
I was trying to figure out a cool way to
do it versus just calling him up and saying it.
So we we made him get a little uncomfortable and
talking in front of the team and saying some things
and kind of teeing it up.

Speaker 3 (38:22):
So he was, Uh, I think he was pretty excited.

Speaker 4 (38:25):
What did he have to say?

Speaker 3 (38:27):
I don't know. I didn't talk to him. I mean
all the players were you probably saw the video. All
the players were excited and.

Speaker 8 (38:32):
And he's so selfless and super humble and pretty quiet guy,
very heartfelt.

Speaker 3 (38:37):
So uh, I'm sure he said all the right things.

Speaker 2 (38:40):
I mean, what did you make him say?

Speaker 4 (38:41):
Oh?

Speaker 3 (38:42):
It made him say.

Speaker 10 (38:43):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (38:43):
So we have a thing called the million dollar question,
which is, uh, what do you know now? You wish
you knew then?

Speaker 8 (38:48):
So I prepped him before the uh, before the meeting,
and I said Hey, I'm gonna you know, the million
dollar question, since we're getting ready to head into the postseason,
what do you know now as we're going into the
post and you wish you knew going into the season
or what next year? What would you tell it freshman
about SEC baseball or a new player about playing at
Texas that you know now you wish you knew then.

Speaker 3 (39:10):
So and he's like, okay, okay, yeah, yeah, I'll think
about something. I'll think about it. So he was put
a lot of thought into it. So that's how it
kind of got set up.

Speaker 8 (39:19):
And then I used the line of all right, what
I know that you don't know is you're the SEC
freshman of the year.

Speaker 3 (39:24):
So tried to get creative teed up.

Speaker 5 (39:28):
What uh what do you guys want to get out
of this week?

Speaker 3 (39:32):
I would like to get a championship.

Speaker 8 (39:34):
I mean again, anytime there's a trophy b one, we
sure we'd love to bring it home.

Speaker 5 (39:39):
You know.

Speaker 8 (39:39):
I just think, you know, we've for ten weeks in
the best conference in the country. You know, we've played
pretty well and over the course of that time, and
along with some other teams that are going to be
down there, and so I think each team is different.
Are teams different than Arkansas or teams different than LSU

(39:59):
or or Vandy is the fourth team.

Speaker 3 (40:02):
Uh, So you know, we've earned the right to kind of.

Speaker 8 (40:05):
Navigate it as best we see fit for both this
tournament and next weekend. So but I do want us
to play well, and I'd like to see us play
clean baseball. And whether that's for one day or three days,
it remains to be seen. But I can tell our
guys once, especially once they get down there and see
the experience, you're gonna want to stay and to and

(40:27):
to and to get a win and uh, and then
have an off day and get to enjoy Hoover and
the other games and just being around the atmosphere. That
would be a great experience for our team. And uh,
but the bigger picture is still at hand and we
have it's my job to to have us ready next weekend.

Speaker 11 (40:43):
Do you have a piggy bagging off that you've You've
been in a lot of different atmospheres and environments for
conference tournaments.

Speaker 5 (40:48):
What is it about Hoover and and what the SEC
does with this tournament that makes.

Speaker 3 (40:52):
It so special?

Speaker 2 (40:53):
Yeah, it's just.

Speaker 3 (40:57):
It's just so you know, it's centrally located.

Speaker 8 (41:00):
So I had great experiences in the Big Twelve tournament
in Oklahoma City. Uh, it was very well done, and
but it wasn't as well attended unless the Oklahoma and
Oklahoma the Oklahoma schools were involved in you know, the
night games or the championship. I think one year, one
or two years at TCU we played Oklahoma State for
the championship and it was packed. But since this is
so centrally located and it's been it's been there for

(41:22):
so long, and it's been such a tradition for all
those SEC schools, the fans, fans plan on it.

Speaker 7 (41:29):
You know.

Speaker 8 (41:29):
I hope we can get to the point where Texas
fans just plan on going and making that part of
of of a vacation or or their or their college
baseball experience. And but those other schools that you know,
the l s US and and Mississippi States and Old
Misses and and certainly the Alabama schools and nount Tennessee
that can get there as a drive. Uh, the fans

(41:49):
are great, and and the and then the SEC just
it's it's it's a mini Omaha. You know, the teams
get we get police escorts to the games. Uh, they
have a great fan zone and experience. When the games
are over, if you win, you get to go on
the set of the SEC Network, and so you literally
feel like a.

Speaker 3 (42:06):
Big leaguer and you grow up.

Speaker 8 (42:08):
Most players grow up, and even if they're at at
other colleges right now, you turn the SEC tournament on.
I mean, that's that's the thing to see, to see
the Hoover met and in youth baseball now, a lot
of the youth tournaments are played in Hoover and and
so kids grow up playing and being there, and so
they're excited.

Speaker 4 (42:26):
To go back.

Speaker 1 (42:27):
You looking at how you handled it in the past,
it seems like you kind of tend to give your
weekend guys a little round without going.

Speaker 4 (42:34):
You know, too long with them.

Speaker 3 (42:35):
Is that how you kind of playing your purchase? Yeah,
I think so.

Speaker 8 (42:37):
I mean, I mean I've only coached in it three years,
and the first year we were felt like we were
We won the SEC West of the A and M,
so it felt like we were in a good spot.
It was a totally different format played earlier in the
week and then then the second year in A and M,
we needed to win some games and we actually ended
up playing with six games in six games in six
days and played in the championship game against Van.

Speaker 3 (42:59):
Dy and lost.

Speaker 8 (43:00):
And then last year, you know, we we wanted to
get a couple guys some work and and see what happened.
So th this year's a little different with it being
single elimination, and our pitching staff's a little different, especially
Mintus Spencer. So we we we can ill afford whether
it be an arm injury or even just a god
forbid a line drive off a pitcher's hand or his
leg or you know something like that. We we're just

(43:23):
we're just not at that point, uh like some of
the other teams are where we k we have depth
of starting pitching. So uh, the I think what the
tournament allows to do is maybe try a few things
depending on who we who we play, maybe an opener
type situation to get to somebody else. Uh, some things
that we did in omahall last year, uh at A

(43:43):
and M. It might be some things we can try
this weekend.

Speaker 5 (43:46):
Is I obviously posting security to the first two weeks.
Is is the number one overall seed something that.

Speaker 3 (43:52):
You net like you're nah, I don't h that that
that doesn't you know all that's all that is is
a set up.

Speaker 10 (43:59):
Uh.

Speaker 8 (43:59):
Yeah, I'm not interested in that. Being the top eight
seed is awesome. Uh, and it's a great accomplishment. Uh,
but certainly you still have to go play the game.
So we've earned the right to play at home at
least the first weekend and uh, and then and then
you have to go play.

Speaker 2 (44:15):
And else.

Speaker 11 (44:16):
For coach Jimmy, how how much line up flexibility you
feel you have now with Max coming back and the
work that Jonas gott and what you've gotten out of
tom and just uh you know, Rodriguis Mendoz are given
better maybe tendh flexibility.

Speaker 5 (44:28):
How how much of that is maybe trying to sort
some things.

Speaker 3 (44:30):
Out, certainly more than we've had.

Speaker 7 (44:32):
Uh.

Speaker 8 (44:33):
We gotta get Jonah healthy. I'm not sure if he'll
play this weekend or not.

Speaker 3 (44:36):
We'll see. Remains to be seen.

Speaker 8 (44:38):
We got we gotta get him ready at least as
ready as he possibly can be to play next weekend.
But having Bax back, having Mendoz to be able to
play the field, that changes a lot. And certainly Tommy
and Tommy can play all three outfield spots really well.

Speaker 3 (44:52):
And and Gasprino. You know, he's a great defender, and he's.

Speaker 8 (44:57):
Had a really good week in uh with the bat
and in practice and has worked with too Love. So uh,
I I believe that our best baseball is still ahead
of us, but we have to.

Speaker 12 (45:06):
Go do it.

Speaker 1 (45:08):
How much more difficult is it to play and prepare
for a tournament forma like this when normally you know
you have a week to to scout get ready.

Speaker 8 (45:15):
For one tam Yeah, I mean in in our first
game situation, we have a lot of work ahead of
us because we haven't played Alabama or Tennessee, so we'll
that game is supposed to be next right here here
this morning, so by the time we land, we'll know
who we're playing. We have practice, so tonight late and
tomorrow morning we'll spend a lot of time watching.

Speaker 3 (45:33):
Video and in preparation for that.

Speaker 8 (45:35):
But the rest of them, we've uh the teams I
think that we could play, Uh we will, we will
have already played, So it would maybe just a little
bit of a of a refresher.

Speaker 11 (45:45):
Tim When you and when you and Max have talked
about pictures, what what have been your staff's thoughts.

Speaker 5 (45:49):
On Sonya and Burns If Sonya did in.

Speaker 11 (45:52):
Morningdings later than Burns has been so via the last
couple of weekmes.

Speaker 3 (45:55):
He's been great.

Speaker 8 (45:55):
Yes, Sonya's kind of filtered into that kind of Max
Grubbs and pitching any role, especially long situation. Burns given
us three innings eight. I think that might be the
most he's pitched this year. He was a starter last year.
So it's given us some options, that's for sure. Just
got to make sure we keep them healthy and strong
and have them sharp for next weekend.

Speaker 3 (46:18):
But it definitely gives us options.

Speaker 2 (46:20):
And there you have a coach.

Speaker 1 (46:21):
Jim slawstingal Texas taken on the winner of Tennessee in
Alabama tomorrow two forty five ERA time, three o'clock first
pitch on the free iHeart radio app and if you
missed it, the game will be on both thirteen hundred
Zone and one on three one FM. Now because the
Express of Round Rock take on the chol At Knights
throughout five fifty pm, our coverage on thirteen hundred will

(46:43):
go up until about five forty five pm, and then
at that point it will only be on one on
three to one FM, So the game does go past
that two hour window then three hour window then please
have the iHeart app handy the go and switch over
to one oh three one FM if need be. If

(47:04):
Texas does win that game tomorrow, they'll get Friday off
and then play again on Saturday, and the airtime for
Saturday's game will be let's see eleven forty five am
noon first pitch, and then Sunday's SEC Championship will be
a one forty five pm airtime and a two o'clock

(47:25):
first pitch Saturday and Sunday's game, if Texas has reached
that far, will be on thirteen hundred this zone. Okay,
up next, going to talk Scotty Scheffler's dominance. No way
we can compare Scotty Cheffer with the Tiger Woods and
Jack Nicholas, or can we?

Speaker 2 (47:41):
That's next.

Speaker 1 (47:42):
As the Craigway Show continues on the free iHeart Radio app,
Let's switch it up to one of my good friends
who I don't believe is a fan of yacht rock.
Actually I know he's not a fan of yacht rock,
Kevin Robbins, who joined me earlier the day for a
little conversation about Scottish Scheffler in previewing the Charles Swap

(48:03):
Challenge at Colonial this week, once again excited to be
joined by golf author, reporter, and professor at the Moody
School of Communication at the University of Texas at Austin,
Kevin Robbins. Check out his work at buy Kevin Robbins
dot com and check him out this week pgtour dot
com with the PJA Tour traveling to Colonial for the

(48:24):
Charlo Charles Swap Challenge. Kevin, First off, let's talk with
Let's start with Scottie Scheffler third major championship victory at
Quohala this past week and did it maybe with his
I don't know B B plus game. He joins Tiger
and Jack as the third player to win three majors
in fifteen PGA Tour events before the age of twenty nine.

(48:45):
He also joins Tiger and Jack as the only golfer
with multiple Master wins, multiple Players Championship wins, and a
PGA Championship. Is also the first player to go back
to back to win back to back events by five
shots or more. Since Tiger Woods a lot of comparisons
to Tiger Woods in Jack Nicholas, it's hard to kind

(49:06):
of compare him to anybody else except Tiger in Jack,
but Kevin, it almost seems unfair considering well, he only
has three major championship wins in fifteen PGA toural wins.
But at the same time, we haven't really seen a
golfer play like this since Tiger Woods.

Speaker 12 (49:25):
It's true, this really is a generational moment, and I
hope that people who who watch golf will appreciate what
we're seeing out of Scotty Scheffler.

Speaker 5 (49:38):
The comparisons they might or might not come true.

Speaker 12 (49:41):
I mean, let's remember Scotty's twenty eight years old, three majors,
fifteen wins, fifteen wins in his last seventy starts, so
I'd say that that telegraphs an outstanding career.

Speaker 5 (49:55):
On par perhaps with Jack and Tiger. At twenty eight.

Speaker 12 (49:59):
Let's say Scotty has, if he stays healthy, fifteen to
eighteen more years where he can compete at this level
and win majors. We might see him get to eighteen.
That he has to win about one more a year,
so let's see. But yeah, the comparisons are interesting, they're intriguing,

(50:24):
they're enticing, but also perhaps premature.

Speaker 1 (50:28):
You mentioned the major championship mark he's still twelve away
from Tiger, fifteen away from Jack. But I believe it
was FanDuel the oddsmakers who put his over under of
major championship victories from now until twenty forty at nine
and a half, which is ridiculous because we have not
seen that done in the modern era since whole Tiger Woods.

(50:49):
Even the career of Roy Moncroy and Brooks Kapca know
they'll probably never get to nine majors. So do you
think that's actually feasible here for Scotty or are we
just caught up in the moment with recency bias both honestly.

Speaker 12 (51:04):
I mean golf, You know, Cameron, you play golf. It's
so wildly unpredictable. I mean, look at Max Homa, who
a couple of years ago was ranked number six in
the world, and I'm really glad to see at the Masters,
in at the PGA had moments that show us that
he's still there.

Speaker 5 (51:24):
But he is a lost man.

Speaker 12 (51:26):
Who is if we're to believe what he's saying out loud,
is somewhat considering a reconsidering why he's playing the game.
My point is that we don't know what's going to
happen with Scotty Scheffler. What's going to happen in his mind?

(51:46):
By all accounts. I mean, I think that his golf
will continue to be great, but will he stay engaged?

Speaker 5 (51:54):
Will he continue to want it?

Speaker 12 (51:56):
It's a grind, spending that many weeks on the road
going from site to sight, and you know, he's even
suggested that that's not his favorite part of his career.
So there's just a lot left to see and a
lot that needs to unfold before we can really talk

(52:20):
about his place in history.

Speaker 1 (52:22):
Our friend Jeff Schakraford had a really good point in
his Quadrilateral newsletter. He said, Scotty's not fueled by fame
or fortune. He's fueled by that competitive drive, and it
seems right now to be burning more furierce than it
ever has before. I thought there was a point in
the back nine the PG on Sunday. You know, Scotty

(52:43):
was teetering on the front nine. You know, he had
the lefts. All of a sudden, you got John Rahm
tied with you, you got Bryce in the shambo nipping
at your heels, and he just found it. He found
it in a lot of spots where you know, we've
seen some of the best golf of all time, including
Rory or Jordan, where they kind of get to that

(53:03):
point and they completely crash. Scotty doesn't seem to have
that enemy, does not seem to have that collapse. He
seems kind of like Tiger or Jack get to a
point where when there's a point in his round where
you feel like he's about to lose it, he seems
to be able to find it. And the way he
played the Green Mile the last two days compared to

(53:25):
how Bryson or Rom you know Rom with those two
double bogies on seventeen and eighteen, and Bryson also the
huge double on seventeen on Saturday. Meanwhile, Scotty just finds
ways to hit the best golf shot, the right golf shot,
time after time after time. And that's where I kind
of that's where I agree with you where I think
it's feasible that he could get up to nine or

(53:46):
ten majors because he doesn't seem to have that part
of the game where he can inherently collapse to be
in his back.

Speaker 12 (53:53):
I don't think he's stuck in three Cameron, that's for sure.
And he's a guy who might who might reach twenty.
It's it is in the possibility at this moment, at
this very moment, because like Jack and like Tiger, there's
not a particular kind of golf course that suits him best.

Speaker 5 (54:11):
If it's a golf course, he's a favorite.

Speaker 12 (54:14):
We've yet to see his best at the Open Championship,
and maybe he's still trying to figure out how to
play good links golf. But when he's when he's on
American soil, he is, he's unbeatable. As you said, he
did not have his best this last week at the
PAGA Championship and he won by five. Now to your

(54:36):
point about Rom and the Shambo, at that point on
the in the final round, they were playing to win.
They were playing to get in touch with the lead.
So the mistakes that the Shamba made on seventeen and
that Rom made on seventeen and eighteen, they're not going
to make if they're trying to keep a lead. So let's,
you know, let's recognize that your point is well taken.

(54:58):
They did collapse. They collapsed in their pursuit of catching
Scotty Scheffler, and that's all they wanted to do. And
you're you're right, there is something about Scotty, about Tiger,
about Jack that somehow makes them immune to like catastrophic collapse.

Speaker 5 (55:17):
And I don't know what that is, and I don't.

Speaker 12 (55:19):
Think we'll ever be able to touch it or see
it or define it.

Speaker 5 (55:23):
It's just this dimension that only they have. But Scotty's
just so.

Speaker 12 (55:31):
Just like so steady on the golf course, and he's
not rocked either way. He doesn't he doesn't let his
emotions carry him too far into the positive or too.

Speaker 5 (55:40):
Far than the negative. He's very much in the moment.

Speaker 12 (55:43):
And a lot of golfers talk about playing one shot
at a time, and a lot of golfers talk about
staying in the moment, but they're they're they're faking it,
man like, they don't know how to git there in
the way that Scotty Scheffler does. And as getting back
to my original point, if physically he can stay healthy,

(56:05):
if mentally he can stay engaged in the pursuit, then.

Speaker 5 (56:11):
Yeah, like, let's talk in twenty years and see how
many majors he has then.

Speaker 1 (56:15):
And he's also someone that if we ever do get
a rollback with the golf ball, which we've been talking
about for phils like decades now. I think his game
still suits to be able to where he can still
win and contend no matter what. I don't think the
rollback will hurt him too much. He can go for
three straight this week at the Charlis Swap Challenge in Colonial, Kevin.
You'll be up there covering it once again for the
PGA Tour and pgatour dot com. What are some top

(56:38):
storylines that you're following this weekend. I'm sure Scotty Scheffer's
up there as well.

Speaker 12 (56:42):
Yeah, certainly Scotty. I mean, he's bound to win this
tournament someday. I think he really wants to win it.
I think he wants to win his hometown events. He's
been top three the last three starts at Colonial because
it's an American golf horse. It suits his game, but
it but it does. It's a shot maker's course. Those

(57:05):
those greens are hard to hit, they're hard, hard to hold.
Uh not many greens and regulation uh in in relationship
to other tournaments on the PGA Tour. So that really
highlights someone's ability to scramble around. And you know, there's
nobody better than Scotty Shuffler at that i'd count. I'd

(57:25):
like if I were if I if I were a
betting person, I totally would bet on Scottie Shuffler this week.

Speaker 10 (57:30):
Uh.

Speaker 12 (57:31):
You know, the thing that we have to look a
look out for is the let down, like the post
PGA letdown. I mean, uh, the mental energy that goes
into winning a major. I don't know this from experience.
I just know from listening to players talk about it,
of course.

Speaker 5 (57:44):
But uh, it's a lot man and and uh, but.

Speaker 12 (57:49):
We're seeing really good things, really good signs out of
Scotti Shuffler right now. And I think if he can
get up in the top five and enter the weekend
in the top five, the crowds come out, he feels
the hometown love.

Speaker 5 (58:02):
Uh, that could propel him to three.

Speaker 10 (58:04):
In a row.

Speaker 1 (58:06):
It would be a site to behold it. And I
love Colonial too. It's it's such a fun course. You
mentioned it's a shot maker's course, especially when you go
from a golf course like Quo Hollow, where outside of
the par threes, everyone's hitting driver. There's there's no thought
process into what you're hitting. But Colonial you'll see guys
hit driver to driving iron hybrid to what It's a

(58:28):
fun course because it makes the golfers actually think on
the tea box, and we don't have that too much
on the tour right now.

Speaker 5 (58:35):
Yeah, it's a it's a it's a great runout course.

Speaker 12 (58:39):
And what I mean by that is because there are
so many dog legs, and the barancas and the hazards
are such that if you pound driver three hundred yards
you're going to be in some form of trouble.

Speaker 5 (58:51):
Uh So you're gonna, yeah, you're you're you're right.

Speaker 12 (58:53):
Like you see a lot of players even playing like
I'm thinking about number three for instance, which is a
really long part four, but it's a dog leg, right,
and you'll see a lot of players hitting hitting faraway
medals off the tee because they don't want to reach
that runout.

Speaker 5 (59:09):
So yeah, it's a it's a. It's a it's it's
kind of a relic watching Colonial. It's like an echo
to the past, you know.

Speaker 10 (59:18):
Uh.

Speaker 12 (59:18):
It does reward driver on a very very few holes though,
So players, you're right, do have to think and shot
make around theirselves, are themselves around that place. And and
I mentioned like nobody better than Scotty. Again, let's not
forget jordan' speith who won this tournament. I think in
twenty sixteen he's back. I can't wait to see Jonathan

(59:39):
Vegas like a Texas fan. If you're a Texas fan,
this is a really good week to go watch PGA
Tour Golf at Colonial because Jonathan and Scotty were stories
last week and Jordan's speeth is just right there. You
can feel it like he is he's going to win again,

(59:59):
and he, like Max Homa, he's had little signals that
his return to form is at hand. So would it
be great to see Scotty and Jordan in the last
group on Sunday.

Speaker 1 (01:00:11):
Yeah, Johnny Vegas, of course, you had that phenomenal round
on Thursday, T five, his best major championship finish and
his career awesome to see for Johnny V.

Speaker 5 (01:00:20):
And then Bo Hostler made the cut last week.

Speaker 1 (01:00:22):
He'll be playing Colonial, Doug gam will be playing, so
a lot of extra, a lot of horns. Pierson Cootie,
who played with Scotty for a little bit, will be
out there as well. So looking forward to it. Looking
forward to reading your work, kevinpjtour dot com and always check.

Speaker 2 (01:00:37):
Him out by Kevin Robbins dot com.

Speaker 1 (01:00:40):
Kevin, enjoy the time up in Colonial and we'll talk
soon and hopefully we'll play golf soon. Always good to
chat with you, Cameron, Thank you, Thanks again to Kevin Robbins.
Check out his work this week pgatour dot com covering
Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Speith and all of the big names
up at Colonial. Fun little stop, especially after the week

(01:01:02):
we just had the PGA Championship.

Speaker 2 (01:01:04):
That bomb and gouge type course at Coohalo.

Speaker 1 (01:01:08):
A little bit more creativity needed to play well and
win at Colonial. We'll be back to wrap up our
two of today's program here. Cameron Parker filling in for
Craig Away on today's show. Craig will be joining us
here leave the back end of the four o'clock hour
from Hoover, Alabama, as Texas Baseball waiting the winner of

(01:01:28):
Tennessee Alabama. It's been a real fun game back and forth,
both teams leading at some point, so we're gonna get
Craig's thoughts on that and his thoughts overall on this
series for Texas as they try and follow up that
SEC regular season championship with a possible postseason championship and
as a number one team, number one overall seed, rather

(01:01:50):
per d one baseball one win, two wins enough to
take that top seed.

Speaker 2 (01:01:56):
In the OMAH. We'll see and we'll discuss it with
Craig later on show.

Speaker 1 (01:02:00):
Eric Henry up next about four fifteen, also joining us
from Hoover, Alabama. Get his thoughts on Texas baseball, but
we're going to talk a little Texas football. Have you
looked at Texas's schedule for twenty twenty five? Yet interesting
October on the road the entire month of October, and
then November heats up for Texas.

Speaker 2 (01:02:21):
Get his thoughts on that.

Speaker 1 (01:02:23):
He has a very interesting comparison for Ryan Wingo. I
believe Eric's expecting a big season for Wingo, and we're
gonna hear his thoughts also on Texas basketball and how
Sean Miller's roster is shaping up for his first season
in Austin hour two, we talked off with Kevin Robbins
and we heard from Jim Slausnego in a little NBA

(01:02:44):
action as well. Give you my thoughts on Okace Minnesota.
If you missed any of that, want to rehear it,
check out the Craigway Podcast. Also look out for our
YouTube page. We'll have some content posted, including our first
hour interview with Texas saw while head coach Mike White,
who is kind of enough to join me for a
few minutes. As Texas prepares for Clemson this week in

(01:03:07):
the NCAA Super Regional. Six straight appearance for Texas under
coach Mike White again. All three games will be in Austin,
will be at Red and Charlie Macombs Field. So if
you're gonna be in Austin this weekend, Texas Softball playing
at eight o'clock Thursday, Friday, and possibly Saturday if necessary.

Speaker 2 (01:03:25):
Perfect time of the day to be able.

Speaker 1 (01:03:28):
To navigate the heat with being outside and to take
in one of the best softball teams in the country.
The sixth he trying to once again return to Oklahoma City.
Texas Baseball hoping to return to Omaha for a thirty
ninth time. Of course, they hold the NCAA record with
thirty eight appearances in Omaha. Jim slasn Ang will try

(01:03:50):
to get Texas back there, and we'll not be able
to do it without the help of Ryland Galvaughan and
Luke Carrison. Galvaugh by the way, was on the SEC
first team, joining Dylan Valantis Galvan, who has been a
fantastic player all season long, met with the media today

(01:04:14):
to talk about being one of the best backstops a
D one level. Second consecutive campaign, He's received a conference
recognition after being named All Big Twelve Honorable Mention last season.
His fourteen home runs were the most by a Texas
catcher since Chris Abbey in nineteen ninety two. The Simpson Product,

(01:04:34):
batting two ninety nine, has driven in forty six runs
and has drawn a team best forty three walks. He's
also on the SEC All Defensive Team. And here is
Galvan from this morning's media availability.

Speaker 3 (01:04:49):
Roylan, how did you find out that you made first
seeing All SEC?

Speaker 4 (01:04:54):
And?

Speaker 3 (01:04:54):
Wow?

Speaker 13 (01:04:54):
T you reaction first time I found out? Josh White
actually told me, And yeah, so, uh just super excited,
you know.

Speaker 2 (01:05:04):
Obviously it's a big deal.

Speaker 13 (01:05:06):
Uh, especially in this conference that we're playing a lot
of great players.

Speaker 4 (01:05:10):
So uh grateful to be part of the group for sure.

Speaker 5 (01:05:12):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (01:05:13):
Can you take us back to y'all?

Speaker 14 (01:05:15):
I guess over here when Dylan foun out and then
coach went out that he was coaching the year.

Speaker 3 (01:05:20):
Yeah, so.

Speaker 13 (01:05:23):
Again Josh White told us. Shout out to Josh White Yuah.
He he had told me and Kimball uh about Atlantis
and then coach didn't even know that he was coaching year.
Uh only Josh, I think, Uh, Coach Wiener and me
and Kimball were the only people in the building then
the other time. So I just wanted to do something

(01:05:44):
special for him, uh, and that it was pretty cool
and uh it was cool to see the smile on
his face when we told him.

Speaker 4 (01:05:53):
Yeah, to get a series when to close out the
regular season?

Speaker 3 (01:05:58):
How pant was that for you guys?

Speaker 13 (01:06:00):
Just huge lot of a lot of confidence they came
out of that and obviously some momentum going into the
SEC Tournament and we got to clinch SEC championship, which
is which is pretty cool against OU and the Red
River rivalry is always special, but it's always special to
meet those guys, for sure. But it was great for

(01:06:21):
for a team and for momentum going forward.

Speaker 4 (01:06:24):
All that you guys accomplished throughout the regular season. You
play for this time of the year, Yeah, how do
you do that? Switch?

Speaker 3 (01:06:32):
Now? I'm like, you know, this is what this is
what we put all the work in for.

Speaker 13 (01:06:35):
Yeah, well, I mean we've done a lot of great
things throughout the year and.

Speaker 2 (01:06:41):
It's been cool. But ultimately now at this time.

Speaker 13 (01:06:43):
Of the year, such to say, but none of that
matters moving forward, and we're just gonna take it one
day at a time and and and try to get better.
And that's you know, getting ready for this flight and
doing the attack practice later and then we'll afford to
tomorrow's game.

Speaker 4 (01:07:02):
Preparation wise, you know, you're not gonna find out your
opponent until Yeah, what what change is there.

Speaker 5 (01:07:11):
Too?

Speaker 13 (01:07:11):
Not too much as far as preparation. Obviously, when we
find out the opponent. The other thing they will changes.
We'll start game planning for who we're facing as far
as pitching and stuff like that. But other than that,
just sticking to our routine and doing what we do
as far as.

Speaker 2 (01:07:26):
Day before and the hours leading up. You honestly would
like to have had match all season.

Speaker 11 (01:07:35):
But yeah, to get him back late in the year,
was that just kind of a morale boost overall?

Speaker 13 (01:07:40):
Yeah, it was, I say, the first time he stepped
on the field to take VP a couple of days before,
you just automatically felt a different energy throughout our team,
throughout our clubhouse, up the whole facility. Everybody was excited
to have him back, and yeah, it was super cool
and and it's cool to see him go through his

(01:08:03):
injury the way he did. He's still a great teammate
and played a huge role in this team beating without
being on the field. That's just the type of leader
in person he is. But great to see him back
on the field, for sure, good for us, for you.
How much are you paying all any attention to like

(01:08:23):
do you feel those sixty four projections? Because I know
you two real great value is kind of pitting out
the Austin Regional. Yeah, obviously you see it. You look
at it, and you want to look forward to you're facing.
But I'd be lying if I say and saying I
wouldn't paying a little bit attention to it.

Speaker 4 (01:08:44):
I've seen him.

Speaker 7 (01:08:45):
I don't know what the.

Speaker 13 (01:08:46):
Trusts are, like, what to b are, what to believe?
There's so many of them, but I have seen RGV
in a few of those. I know they they lost
in the conference sernament, so I don't know how that's gonna.

Speaker 2 (01:08:57):
Play out, but would be super cool to have them here.

Speaker 13 (01:09:02):
But yeah, I haven't paid too much attence to it,
but I have seen them in an out of there
and then whoever's in our region obile prepare for them
like we do anybody else.

Speaker 1 (01:09:11):
Let's say, dialogue at hitting between you and your.

Speaker 12 (01:09:13):
Brother over this.

Speaker 13 (01:09:15):
Definitely not gonna be like the first time. Not gonna
be as nice. Yeah, trying to sit him home.

Speaker 7 (01:09:20):
Be sure.

Speaker 1 (01:09:22):
The guy gal Vaughan will be catching four on possibly Saturday.
Luke Harrison the outstanding pitcher for Texas who is once
again backing up last season's campaign with another impressive campaign
this season. As Lucas started in fourteen games this season
for Texas, he should hit sixty six in a third.

(01:09:45):
That's a five to one record in those fourteen starts.
In for Texas to make a deep run this postseason,
we'll be relying a lot on Luke Harrison's arm. Here
is Luke's thoughts from this morning's media availability.

Speaker 8 (01:09:57):
Luke, I love your pot on tune in to see
guy se see freshman in the year.

Speaker 9 (01:10:03):
Yeah, that was pretty cool. I think, you know, everybody
in the room was kind of surprised by it. You know, everybody,
I think thought he deserved it, and you know, we're
all super proud of him for for earning that and
just for everything that goes into that, the the work
behind the scenes that allows him to be in a
position to do that. It was really cool to see him,

(01:10:23):
you know, and he's very grateful for it and really
appreciates his teammates supporting him the whole way it.

Speaker 2 (01:10:29):
Experience wise, obviously, the games will kind of experience.

Speaker 3 (01:10:33):
Why is what are you looking forward to about this weekend?

Speaker 9 (01:10:35):
Oh, I can't wait to get there. I've I've heard
a lot of great things about the Hoover met and
the SEC Tournament and just the you know, the atmosphere there,
just a bunch of people that love baseball, and I
think it's.

Speaker 4 (01:10:45):
Gonna be a really cool experience for all of us.

Speaker 9 (01:10:48):
Really looking forward to getting out there and hopefully we'll
stay a little while.

Speaker 3 (01:10:51):
How important was.

Speaker 13 (01:10:52):
It for you as to get that win at Oklahoma,
not just to you know, lock up as to see
regular season champs, but to get back on on the
winning side of things.

Speaker 9 (01:11:00):
Yeah, I mean it's a great opportunity for us to
go on the road to play a rivalry game, you know,
face some really good arms. I thought, you know, the
hitters were great competing all weekend and we did our
thing on the mound, so you know.

Speaker 4 (01:11:12):
Just to you know, every week's new opportunity, and we
was a good one for us.

Speaker 12 (01:11:17):
Has it been fairly easy for this team to appreciate
what you've accomplished throughout the regular season, but know like
what we want is what's coming the.

Speaker 5 (01:11:25):
Next few weeks.

Speaker 7 (01:11:26):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (01:11:26):
Absolutely. I think that's kind of one of the.

Speaker 9 (01:11:29):
Beautiful things about what we have with a veteran group
of guys is you know a lot of guys know
what's left to play for and know what's coming down
the road.

Speaker 4 (01:11:36):
You know, we've got some guys on our team that
have played in.

Speaker 9 (01:11:38):
Omaha, and we've got some guys that are really dying
to get there, so you know, everybody kind of knows
what's ahead is the most important stuff.

Speaker 4 (01:11:46):
Look, what's what's the same about this team that you guys?

Speaker 5 (01:11:48):
I mean you clinched everything you could on Thursday, but.

Speaker 11 (01:11:50):
Yet still went out and had two really competitive games
against Oklahoma and there's nothing to play for me?

Speaker 5 (01:11:55):
Is that just kind of who this team is?

Speaker 4 (01:11:57):
What this team is.

Speaker 11 (01:11:57):
If there's a game you guys.

Speaker 9 (01:11:59):
Are up for, Yeah, I mean there's always something to
play for. You know, when you're wearing burn orange, you
go up to Norman Oklahoma. There's there's always something to
play for. You play for pride, you play for the
guys next to you. You always just played to win
the game. And I think that you know that's what
we're about, and that's what we're going to do.

Speaker 1 (01:12:14):
There you have it, the thoughts of Ryland Galvan and
Luke Harrison. Up next, we're talking Texas football with Eric
Henry from Horns two four to seven. Last year, October
was a big month for Texas football. Way twenty five
once again going to be another big month. We'll tell

(01:12:34):
you why as the Craigway Show continues on the free
iHeart Radio app Cameron Parker filling in for Craigway, who
will join us later this hour. Thunder Island by Jay
viergus in Texas Baseball, hoping to create some lightning and
thunder in Hoover, Alabama this weekend, and now joined by
my good friend Eric Henry from Horns two four seven

(01:12:56):
who actually joins us on the road to Hoover, Alabama
and Erica. A big part of this show with Craig Way,
of course, is talking about food items and where do
we stop on the road and restaurants and a lot
of BUCkies talk. So for you, Eric Henry, my man
on the road the Hoover, Alabama. I mean, is there

(01:13:18):
like a must stop plays for you? Is a BUCkies?
Is it a quick trip? What's your go to?

Speaker 14 (01:13:25):
First off, can't appreciate you having on, always a pleasure
to hop on with you here. I chuckled because a
man of Craig's stature, you know, he's he's been hupping
down the roads. I know he knows all the spots.
But for me, I'm a pretty simple guy. It's one
or two things. I either can't eat donald but it's
basically I'm going a pretty basically Donald order to uh

(01:13:45):
hot and spice and the chickens just to keep you going,
you know, a little entertain or if I'm gonna stops
the ma Wafa house guy, and I know Wafa house
are They aren't so prevalent throughout Texas, got a few
and often, But being a Southerner, I love that.

Speaker 2 (01:14:03):
See, I love waffle house. You know, I'm a Southeast guy.

Speaker 1 (01:14:07):
Waffle houses are distinctly better in the Southeast than they
are in Texas.

Speaker 2 (01:14:11):
Uh Like, do you agree to in that?

Speaker 14 (01:14:13):
Okay, Okay, undoubtedly, listen, I'm not chanting any walfuse in Texas.
But there's just something different about a waffle house. To
go through the southeast part of the United States, it's
a little different, can but you.

Speaker 1 (01:14:26):
Know, yeah, it definitely hits a little bit different. But
you know, I have friends who eat waffle house in Texas.

Speaker 7 (01:14:31):
They don't like it.

Speaker 1 (01:14:32):
But if I take them the one in in you know,
Mississippi or Georgia, Florida, it's a it's a much different response. Okay,
let's talk a little Texas football here before we get
to some baseball in basketball action. Last October was such
a pivotal stretch for Texas on their football schedule. They
had the big win over Oklahoma at the Red River,

(01:14:55):
played Georgia, did not go their way, and then ended
the month with a sneaky good win at Vanderbilt. Again,
it led in for most of it and then had
to kind of fight off a comeback from Daego Pavia
and kind of set the stage for that what five
game win streak heading into the SEC Championship. Conversely, twenty

(01:15:15):
twenty five, October once again going to be a big month,
but not because they're playing Georgia or anything like that,
but because Eric the entire month of October, they're on
the road.

Speaker 14 (01:15:29):
Yeah. I mean, listen, you kind of hit the nail
on the head and you talked about past year. And
here's the thing, right, I'm not being an alarmist, Pam
when I say that, I'm really eyeing this stretch of
the schedule because I think it's going to be important
to take twenty twenty five cents. I'm not trying to
be an alarmist, but let's just be real about it. Right,

(01:15:49):
in all likelihood, Texas going to enter the month of
October either four to zero or three and one. First
case scenario three and one, so loose. If they do
go three one to lose, Ohio State take there of
business with the rest of the non conference, But then
you go to the Swamp, which, again Billy Napier appears
to at least have things treading in the right direction

(01:16:10):
because he's finally found his quarterback in DJ Lagway. We'll
see what the rest of the Gators look like. But
that's gonna be a tough test. That's why they're gonna
be at night at the Swamp and funk for ninety
thousand people. I know we're Texas fans will say, listen,
we've been there and done that, gone to Michigan, gone
to hostile environments.

Speaker 7 (01:16:26):
But it's gonna be.

Speaker 14 (01:16:27):
Another test for a new group that it hasn't been
a battle test as a group that went to Alabama,
went to Michigan. Of course you got a regular shootout
in Dallas. Then he goes to Kentucky to Mississippi State.
I think best case scenario four and Oh and I
don't see. I don't think four and oh's out of
the ablaces. But that's again a month's stretch as you're

(01:16:48):
away from Austin, and then you follow that up that
you have to go to Georgia right in two weeks
after you get into November. So I think it's not
Peano larbist, but it is crucial Texas stakes care of
business in the October thretch. Because of November he got Georgia, Arkansas,
A and M and Bandy with becoming back.

Speaker 1 (01:17:10):
Yeah, I'm glad you mentioned Florida because that's gonna be
a top twenty five Florida Gator team. I think by
all accounts, and I'm not sure Texas fans were even
the national media really talking about Florida up. DJ Lagway
had Florida beating Georgia last season before he went down
with that I think hamstring injury. In with the first
quarter first half, Texas did not have the play Lagway.

(01:17:33):
They played like their third string quarterback who couldn't hit
the broad side of a barn with his right arm. Now,
if Lagway is healthy, that's going to be a huge
test for Texas, especially with Oklahoma looming behind them. And
then you got, you know, two sleepy games at Kentucky
at Mississippi State, two teams that probably won't be very good,

(01:17:54):
but we'll you know, provide a test. And Eric I
can already tell you those games will be yes, eleven
am game. There's no way they're not eleven games.

Speaker 14 (01:18:05):
Well, Melissa Kim, you're talking to the sports writer of
the bunch. I'll take all the eleven am kickoffs, and
that means I can get out of the stadium for.

Speaker 4 (01:18:13):
One a m.

Speaker 14 (01:18:14):
And ideally I could be on the first thing smoking
back to Austin. But especially when you're on the road camp,
you want an eleven am pickoff because you're trying to
be back in Austin and on a Sunday. But to
your point, real quick. Yes, I also think right we
talk about, you know, kind of being sweepy, games of
fun attended. We'll levetan pickoffs are tricky, right. I mean again,
it sounds like I'm building excuses, but the guys got

(01:18:37):
to get their body clock right. And it's interesting when
we spoke with last year's crew, they talked about liking
the earlier kickoffs, saying, hey, you get up. You're not,
you know, forced the weight around all day. Get up
and go play football. Right, So we'll get this year
to respond with. And this to your point about Florida,
I think people are se toupcare. I'm not just saying
that the rest is meridian in Austin. I do think

(01:18:59):
feeling Naper is a good coach, maybe a little bit
in over his head coming from Louisianao's person year, but
also think he was left a great situation, with such
a situation that he wasn't have to build in time.
But he's found his guy and Jim, you know, you
could speak to this, right. It doesn't matter what sport
of this, but especially football. If you're trying to rebuild

(01:19:20):
a program and you've see these teams just shovel through
quarterbacks left and right at the portal. The fact that
Billy Napier got his guy in DJ Labway. It's very
similar and I don't want to, you know, in both
to Iris law Moren fans, but it's very similar to
the way Texas fans feel about Arch Brandy. They're like,
all right, we finally have our guy in place, so
when feeling you believe his next level. So that's something

(01:19:43):
got to pay attention to. No doubt that he said
their schedule minds up. They could be a top fifteen
team by the.

Speaker 1 (01:19:48):
Time that came over time with Eric Henry from horns
to four seven early look ahead the Texas twenty twenty
five schedule.

Speaker 2 (01:19:54):
Okay, so you mentioned Texas could.

Speaker 1 (01:19:56):
Be three one, possibly four to oh entering four let's
say the stretch of October.

Speaker 2 (01:20:03):
They also go three and one, maybe even four others.

Speaker 1 (01:20:05):
So chas Texas is eight to oh or seven to one,
six and two heading into November. And I think November
will define what the Texas twenty twenty five year will
be like because you begin at home against Vanderbilt, probably
a pesky Vanderbilt team.

Speaker 2 (01:20:20):
It'll be your what I think five your fifth straight game.

Speaker 1 (01:20:26):
Yeah, five straight games, five straight weeks of playing football
before you get a buye, and then after the buye
you go to Georgia Sanford Stadium Athens. That'll likely be
a primetime night game, possibly number one, first number two,
probably a top five matchup. And then you come back
for Texas Arkansas and then oh yeah, the week after

(01:20:47):
A and M. November is going to be I believe
the month that will define text. October is going to
be a huge month for Texas, but they can weather
the store of October. November I believe will be the
dividing month for Texas football. Air.

Speaker 14 (01:21:00):
Yeah, two parts that I want to touch on. One
I'm really glad can be made the point about Texas
going over a month without a pride. That's part of
the reason that se Star Teason Company wants to get
that Sam peece of State game loosed up a week
because they wanted there to be some sort of five
coming out of the occocer schedule before they go into

(01:21:20):
SEC play. But yes, that's another thing again, when talking
about that schedule going into October, you may say, Okay,
they're not necessarily playing preem with the crop, but they're
not getting any days off right, So there's that acpect. Secondly,
when you talk about November, and that really is to
me the month that makes the text football team. I
agree this year there's a very high probability they're walking
into November at seven and one, are even positive eight

(01:21:44):
to oh. But that's where Steve starkisian and he talked
about this last year and I'm heavily emphasizing it this year.
Two things I've talked about on the show is one,
building up and having a steady qv Two, I can't
knock on wos some driving the long warm fans blacks
to do it for me. Do you hope that arch
band can play every single game? But in Steam starts

(01:22:05):
with ten years head coach. I'll say it again, I
say get blue in the faith. He's never had a
quarterback play and start every single day. So if there's
that at step one, step two of this, especially get
into November, is the amount of death that Texas is
looking to build on their roster. Seem to talk about
the mports, those non conference games, getting freshmen, getting guys

(01:22:28):
by a Trevor goosby Tyanthony Smith, a Kobe Black, Jared
Gibson from last year's group to give you examples of
guys who can get valuable playing time so that they
can't step up.

Speaker 1 (01:22:40):
And.

Speaker 14 (01:22:42):
That's weird. September and October ideally is able to take
care of business, you know, in a in a steady fashion,
and he's continuing to those guys reads in October, they'll
be ready to go when they got to go to Stanford,
save when they have to play against staying in that home,
et cetera. So all two points.

Speaker 1 (01:23:02):
Yeah, I think it's a big reason why Texas took
a quarterback in the transfer portal with Matthew Calwell, the
former Troy Trojan, just because a lot of people, I know,
they're high on the backups Texas has. But at the
same time, you mentioned the lack of experience there, and
you know, of course to point you know, Texas has
not had a quarterback play a full season of hell

(01:23:23):
since maybe Sam Ellinger, and even then that dude was
super banged up and played through a lot of injuries.

Speaker 2 (01:23:29):
Okay, that's a football schedule part of it.

Speaker 1 (01:23:33):
Ryan Wingom, you had an interesting thought on CBS Sports Network.
You kind of had a comparison of Ryan Wingel maybe
being the Texas version of Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith or
Alabama's version of Ryan Williams.

Speaker 7 (01:23:49):
Yeah.

Speaker 14 (01:23:50):
Yeah, it's one of those things that I even you know,
you want to get to the media. Here's my advice.
Never took the comment anything to say, because you're probably
going to get flow back from the other I've had
plenty of Ohio State Alabama fans calling me a hover
and the other. Which it's funny because I was down
prised that, you know, if you want to look at them,

(01:24:10):
belief Homer of the Horns twenty four SEPs Staff, you know,
either not being a Texas having not gone to ug
But I digress. The reason I say Texas has their
version of Jeremiah Smith or Ryan Williams, and Ryman goes
okay one, they all were five stars out So when
I read the comment and say, who is this guy
comparing someone I've never heard of the Jeremiah Spress, Well,

(01:24:31):
all right, you know, I hate to break to you,
but he didn't hear about everythingle five star in the
nation because you're not in the situation you're landing. It
is if always. The Starkesian is known for being very
cautious when it comes to the universe. Seasons playing the
veteran guys. I simply made the point in that hit.
For a CPS Sports network, if Ryan Wingo had the

(01:24:53):
same mount of targets Jeremized Smith or Ryan Williams, his
numbers would be similar. And let's just run down real quick.
Ryan Lingo had sixty five targets for twenty nine twenty
nine catches for four hundred and seventeen yards and two touchdowns.
If I multiply, I just multiply that and got Jeremiah
fifth one hundred and five targets. So basically doubling the
amount of targets that window had, Brian Wingo would be

(01:25:17):
at nearly sixty catches for over nine hundred yards nearly
one thousand yards. Maybe he doesn't have quite a touchdown output.
That spit that, but we're talking about a guy who
is nearly a seventy catch one thousand yard receiver. He
gave him those types of targets. So I do think
year two, Ryan Lingo now has the hear in the system.

(01:25:40):
He's four or less going to be the lead daw
along with DeAndre more than four kids and mostly coming
in and Jack Entry. But in terms of wide receiver one.
Ryan Window has all of the capability of those guys.
So I will shout this again. He's done, enounces that idiot.
So I'm flue in the face. Bryan Wingo is every
but every big as good as those guys. If you
saw it, you saw him a command amongst boys at times,

(01:26:02):
so happy money.

Speaker 1 (01:26:06):
And he's coming off Lasa guye surgery, which I think
there was timed last season where it felt like Wingo
wasn't on the same page with Quinn yours In and
I wonder how much of that actually was just uh,
the Lasa guy thing really bothering wing going.

Speaker 2 (01:26:20):
Of course, he had his fair share of injuries too.

Speaker 1 (01:26:22):
So I'll tell you what, if Texas can get a
season of Wingo like Jeremiah Smith or Ryan Williams, then
look out for arch Mannings Heisman odds in twenty twenty five. Okay,
let's switch gears to Texas basketball. I know there was
some thoughts you wanted to speak on about where their

(01:26:43):
roster is, like heading into Sean Miller's first season on
the forty Acres.

Speaker 14 (01:26:49):
Yes, one of the things came, of course here with
this that team day and day out. One of the
things that was super curious about is just how would
this Sean Miller noted that he was going to get
the four. I've got to get Sean Miller credit. He
has done everything at least to this point that you
said months to set out to do his instructory print Copper,
that is, makeheadways in the transfer portal, established some grounds

(01:27:13):
in high school recruiting, and also go overseas just typically
a British signing. They got John Clark and the latest
Ross's coming together as part as the portal. I think
to be completely osmis out there surprise how well they've done.
I think the only thing they're missing in my mind
is yes, they got Sidney and Wilcher, who I think
is super talented combo guard at Dynamic Guard as they

(01:27:36):
were Saint John for two years. If you look at
four of the five players of Texas side, four of
the five were on twenty four seven Sports Top one
hundred and fifty transfer players available and there were over
three thousands. There's no shortage, so they did well there.
I just would like the scene and gets to get
Tremont Mark backs leaves the taller guard slash ing. I'd

(01:27:57):
like to see one more playmaking guard guard with side
right to take those guards from the roster right now,
Kena Weaver is six to three or you know play
figures that athletic, but still sixth three. Jordan Pope is
a little on the more swing side. It's six foot right,
and then you have filter coming in. I'm super curious
you think you find you know, a sixty five six

(01:28:18):
to six kind of comboish guards to someone who leads
me to a little bit of ball handling but also
create his old shots play on the wing. That is
I think one thing that they may be missing. But
I really like the way that the Rocks come together
to get Dalan Swayne as one of the better younger
two way players in the league, to get those big
for tror and and and madis that I feel like

(01:28:39):
to get the pronunciation got a mad as this last thing.
But because in fau so you get the side. So
I like the way the Rosses come together. Just wants
a little more. There's the guard position to see what
they can do. But yeah, give Sean Miller in company credit.
You're paying attention to what the text ross is looking like.
You might want to start because it's together pretty well

(01:29:02):
at least in my mind, considering the perce militip over
a pretty good job.

Speaker 1 (01:29:07):
You can check out Eric's roster outlook at Horns two
four seven dot com and of course, follow his Texas
Baseball coverage at the SEC Tournament this week in Hoover, Alabama,
also at Horns two four seven and follow him on
Twitter at Eric c Henry Underscore. Eric Hay Safe travels
uh to Hoover, Alabama. Have a hot and spicy sandwich

(01:29:30):
for me, and look forward to following your coverage all
weekend long.

Speaker 14 (01:29:35):
My man, Cam, Should you have you on bub think
you buddy?

Speaker 1 (01:29:37):
Eric Henry from Horns two four seven dot com. Okay,
also joining us from Hoover, Alabama, Craig Way up next
as the Pregway Show continues on this Wednesday afternoon. Very well, hey,
has it sunk in that you may only have two
more work road trips this athletics season, possibly Hoover in

(01:29:59):
the and hopefully Omaha.

Speaker 2 (01:30:02):
Good after him?

Speaker 7 (01:30:02):
Correct, good afternoon, and that would be pretty cool. I'd
be all right with that.

Speaker 10 (01:30:07):
I'll tell you what else if you're looking for good omens,
the hotel where the Texas baseball team stays is staying
here is the exact same hotel where the football team
stayed when they played Alabama going on just three years ago,
so it'll be that. And it's the exact same hotel

(01:30:30):
where the men's basketball team stayed for the first and
second round when the year they went to the Final
four in two thousand and three.

Speaker 7 (01:30:38):
So there's some good omens there. Now.

Speaker 10 (01:30:41):
The unpleasant reality of the fact is Texas is going
to be seeing Tennessee tomorrow, and they're going to be
in all probability seeing Liam.

Speaker 7 (01:30:49):
Doyle, the SEC pitcher of the year.

Speaker 10 (01:30:51):
I knew that, Tony Botello and Frank Anderson, of course,
the former Texas pitching coach. I knew they were not
going to pitch Leeam Doyle today have been on two
days less red even tomorrow beyond one day's less rest.
But they need wins to lock down a regional host opportunity,
and they're on the verge of run ruling Alabama. They

(01:31:11):
were actually down six to five to Bama and the
fifth they scored ten unanswered runs over the next three innings.
They're still batting in the eight up fifteen to six.
So Tennessee's gonna win this game, and the long ones
would have to take all the bottom pier smart today.

Speaker 2 (01:31:25):
Yeah, they really turned it on.

Speaker 1 (01:31:27):
They were up early to nothing and then then two
to one, and then the fifth inning was huge for
Bama and they scored five runs in the fifth inning.
Looks like maybe the Crimson tie could pull off an upset.
But since then ten unentered runs and getting pretty close
to run ruling. Though they got a runner and scoring
position right now which just won out. And you mentioned

(01:31:49):
no Liam Doyle as you expected. Instead it was a
Marcus Phillips who got the start, and we saw Brandon
Arvison come in and face one batter, might come out
and close the ninth, but even then he would still
be available tomorrow one of their best bullpen pitchers. So
this will be a Tennessee team that will come in
now with a little bit momentum at the plate and

(01:32:11):
possibly have all of their best pictures at their disposal
ready to go against Texas tomorrow.

Speaker 10 (01:32:17):
Yep, starting with Doyle, there's no doubt about Meanwhile, it
aproachs and what the long Worm's going to do.

Speaker 7 (01:32:21):
The answer is a.

Speaker 10 (01:32:22):
Big fat I don't know right now, because Jim Slasnegel
and maxwen Or I talked to him before we got
on the plane, and they're still trying to work through
who they might go.

Speaker 7 (01:32:32):
It's for sure that they're.

Speaker 10 (01:32:36):
Not planning on using Ruger yohats or obviously you know
they're they're not planning, you know, Luke Harrison, they're not
planning to go with the weekend guys because they could
going be going on significantly less rest. What they're hoping
is they can piece it together somehow tomorrow it'll win,

(01:32:57):
then they get Friday off, and then they would have
guys ready to go regular weekend guys.

Speaker 7 (01:33:03):
So we'll see. But you know, that's that's going to
be interesting. It's going to be interesting to see how
they come.

Speaker 10 (01:33:13):
About with a pitching plan tomorrow because it's it's going
to be difficult against a really good hitting Tennessee team.
By the way, it's been largely death by a thousand
paper cuts today, a lot of singles.

Speaker 7 (01:33:26):
They did finally get a home run.

Speaker 10 (01:33:29):
Earlier in the sitting, but other than that, it's been
it's been almost all base hit singles and then the
double or two. So but they know how to make
it to bleed you out a little bit too. So
that's why this is going to be a difficult challenge
for the long Rune tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (01:33:41):
And it's interesting, Craig, because we talked about how some
teams coming into this SEC tournament, like Tennessee hoping to
win a couple of games and get into that top
sixteen in host a regional, a team likes to be stayed,
for instance, who kind of knows where they're going to
be at in this tournament against A and M who
has to basically win every game to make the tournament.
We saw today Missippi State go to the starting pitcher

(01:34:05):
who has only started two more games and kind of,
you know, stayed away from using their top guys on
the bullpen. You know, it might be a move of
saying like, hey, you know, let's make sure we leave Hoover,
you know, without any more injuries and make sure we're
well rested to go for the college baseball postseason. I
talked about with Mike White too earlier in Theday's show

(01:34:26):
about Yeah, there kind of is a fine line with hey,
we want to go out and win a championsip. At
the same time, you do benefit from having a couple
extra days off, And you know, that's why I wanted
to ask you, like what do you think Jim Slashnakles
plan is and you just talked about really a big
fat I don't know, but I'm curious how Schlosh will
handle this, especially his bullpen and who he starts tomorrow.

(01:34:48):
Kind of knowing, Hey, we're going to host a regional
and most likely we're going to host a super regional
if we get that far in the tournament.

Speaker 10 (01:34:56):
Yeah, he does not want to jeopardize the regionals. Sure,
that's the next big step. Obviously, it'd be great if
they were able to compete in, contend in and maybe
even win this tournament here. But he said cam the
exact same thing about winning the regular season. He said,
a lot of our hey is in the barn, meaning

(01:35:16):
Texas was going to be a top eight national seed
regardless of whether they won the regular season or not
going into the Oklahoma Series. But what he did say
was we need positive momentum and we'd like to win
a series since we've lost to in a row.

Speaker 7 (01:35:30):
That was his quote at the time. Well, they were
able to go out and do that and win.

Speaker 10 (01:35:34):
The SEC outright, so that's all well and good, and
he was able to keep his pitching pretty much on pace.
Now they want to get Rugary Ohas back on the
horse because he's wabbled a little bit of late, but
Luke Harrison's looked really good of late.

Speaker 7 (01:35:50):
Then of course they have to solve the dilemma of
the third started.

Speaker 10 (01:35:53):
Well.

Speaker 7 (01:35:54):
An event like this gives you an opportunity.

Speaker 10 (01:35:56):
Perhaps to try some of that, but again facing.

Speaker 7 (01:36:00):
One of the top pitchers in the country, so they
may only.

Speaker 10 (01:36:02):
Get one game to try to sort through all that,
and then if it doesn't work out, if they lose, okay,
yes we're coming back home.

Speaker 7 (01:36:08):
But you're right. They give their frontline guys some rest.
They work, they do inn squad, you.

Speaker 10 (01:36:14):
Know, simulated games, all of those things leading up to
finding out who's going to come to Austin next week
for the regionals. The main thing is don't jeopardize the regional.
They want to do well here. They'd love to win
this tournament, but the Eyes run a bigger prize on
down the road, starting with the regional next weekend.

Speaker 1 (01:36:35):
Two for PM airtime hopefully three o'clock first Fitch Texas
and the winner of Tennessee and Alabama.

Speaker 2 (01:36:41):
Right now, looking like it could.

Speaker 1 (01:36:42):
Be the volunteers Battle of the Uts Craig, which we
had more time up against it, unfortunately, but we will
talk to you hopefully tomorrow and looking forward to your
call in the SEC tournament.

Speaker 10 (01:36:55):
Yeah, you bet, and Cam just a quick thing.

Speaker 7 (01:36:57):
We'll let post know.

Speaker 10 (01:36:58):
Because of the rain out last night and then A
and M having to be pushed to today, they won,
which by the way helped them.
