Speaker 1 (00:02):
It's Thursday, another crazy day in the world of college football.
My name is Jay Krbin, the producer of the Craig
Ways Show, filling in for the Hall of Famer today
as Craig is en route to Hartford to call Texas
men's basketball and their tough road test at yukon tomorrow evening.

(00:26):
You can hear that game on ninety eight one FM KVET,
But for now, we join you from two to five
pm right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone.
And we were with you yesterday afternoon when the news
broke from Ann Arbor that Sharon Moore, second year head
coach at Michigan, was fired for cause. We have more

(00:49):
details to share with you on that. We're going to
hear from a Michigan historian, an insider, John Bacon, what
he had to say on Good Morning Detroit to kind
of color in some details on this in just a
few moments.

Speaker 2 (01:04):
But first here's what we know.

Speaker 1 (01:06):
Reporting coming from Pete Famil, Dan Wetzel of ESPN, among
other sources, say that Sharrod Moore at the moment remains
in custody as a suspect for an alleged assault and
is going to appear in court for arrangement on Friday.
According to the Pittsfield Charter Township Department of Public Safety,

(01:27):
Searn Moore was under investigation by the University of Michigan.
He was informed yesterday afternoon during this program that he
was going to be let go, and his players. Fellow
coaches were told shortly after, and just hours after that,

(01:49):
Charrod Moore found himself detained and held at the Washington
County Jail over what the school said was an inappropriate
relationship with the staff member and what the authority said
was an alleged assault. He was turned over to the
authorities for quote investigation into potential charges. Because it's an

(02:10):
ongoing investigation, we haven't heard too much more about it
quite yet, but some of the stories being reported and
rumors circulating had taken this story into some dark places.
Audio was released from a nine to one one dispatch
yesterday of a woman claiming that Sharon Moore had been

(02:30):
stalking her for months, that he was at her home
when this happened. And again we'll hear some more in
just a moment from Michigan historian John Bacon, who has
been following this situation, starting first with just a recap
of what we know and what we don't at the

(02:53):
moment about the Michigan head coach Haron Moore being fired yesterday,
being detained as we speak, well in custody as we speak,
and expected to appear.

Speaker 2 (03:06):
In court tomorrow.

Speaker 3 (03:09):
Well the worker backwards.

Speaker 4 (03:11):
He and this employee at the Michigan Football building were
investigated by the University of Michigan this summer. I both
denied any relationship. That story changed yesterday morning when she
went on the hill, as we say, the administration office
with the receipts, the text messages, the emails, documents, and
so on, laying out the details of their relationship and

(03:33):
the conflicts thereof, and that of course resulted in Sharing
Moore being fired. The regions and the President had enough,
Manuel himself fires Sharing Moore sometime after noon yesterday one
on one in their office.

Speaker 3 (03:47):
After that, this is where we're getting to your part.

Speaker 4 (03:50):
He broke into the employee's off home in Pittsfield Township,
which is between ann Arbor and Sealine, Michigan, grabbed a
knife apparently, and threatened to harm.

Speaker 3 (04:02):
Her and harm himself.

Speaker 4 (04:04):
And that's when it became into protective custody. In Michigan,
So that's where that one stands.

Speaker 1 (04:12):
So it's also been reported that Shroan Moore is being
attended to around the clock by mental health professionals. Obviously,
given some of those details in the story, you can
understand why. So the questions are raised next about why
that is what comes next? ESPN reporting that Moore was
initially investigated back in the fall when they had a

(04:35):
tip about this situation, and we don't know how far
back this goes, but a source told Damn Wetzel Pete
Bamill with the ESPN that there was not credible evidence
of wrongdoing at that time, back in the fall, but
that more information came forward yesterday that the source said
was quote overwhelming and led to Michigan having to pull

(04:58):
the trigger and immediately cut ties with more. Of course,
when you fire someone for cause, there's no kind of
buyout that has to be paid. It's just cutting ties
right then and there. And obviously things sort of spiraled
after that, for sure. More yesterday, here's what John Bacon,
again Michigan author, historian very close ties with this football program,

(05:22):
had to say about that mental health pro situation and
maybe what comes next.

Speaker 4 (05:30):
That's correct, and it should be obviously, So that is
obviously a serious matter. The Knights matter for Michigan, of course,
is going to be the status of athletic director Word Manual,
because they're going to need to hire a football coach.
You will not be internal. There's no one prepared on
the staff right now for that role. If they go externally,
then you need and I like director to hire that person.

(05:50):
The question is will that be Ward Manual or somebody else.
So all this is happening very fast.

Speaker 1 (05:55):
There are other questions raised as well, and we will
get to the Michigan coach search later on this hour.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
We'll also bring that up with CJ.

Speaker 1 (06:03):
Vogel, who will join us at about three point fifteen
later on in the show today to get his thoughts,
his takeaways on what the Michigan coaching search could look like,
what it might mean for Texas. Of course, Texas going
to see Michigan twenty days from now, almost to the
minute for a two o'clock Central Time kickoff, and the

(06:25):
Chiefs at Citrus Bull in Orlando on New Year's Eve,
what version of Michigan. Well they see Biff Pogy will
be the interim head coach. But like you just heard
John Bacon say, like you've just heard it widely reported,
Michigan's not really looking to make an internal higher. Biff
Pogy is the interim head coach, but I don't know
how long that will last. Yesterday we had Cameron Parker

(06:47):
on the show reacting to the news along with me.
He suggested, Well, if you're Michigan, you can't get the
coach you want in the next week, you might want
to go with Biff Pogy for kind of a transition year, right,
and see if that can help you keep some of
the high valued recruits on campus, if that can provide
some stability. I don't think a lot of people can

(07:10):
foresee that happening unless the coaching search really does not
go as Ward Manual plans. But we bring up Ward
Manual and you heard John Bacon say it.

Speaker 2 (07:20):
What did he know?

Speaker 1 (07:21):
What did the athletic department know, and when did they
know it? And how might that inform what the Michigan
Board of Regions, who has dealt with seemingly scandal after
scandal in the last decade or so, How does that
inform what they're working on as we speak this afternoon.

Speaker 4 (07:41):
I guarantee they're working on those two issues.

Speaker 3 (07:43):
Who knew what and when?

Speaker 4 (07:45):
I guess I'll say this much in defense of the university.
They did have the investigation internally this summer, and if
both parties say there's nothing happening, there's not a lot
else that can do other than respond to rumors. But
now they brought in a Washington, DC law firm, one
of the white shoe of firms, as they say, to
investigate the entire department and what's happening with the entire department.

(08:05):
That is going to be a very serious report, external
third party, of course, and that will have a lot
to say, I'm sure about wart Manual's future. So they
are meeting, I'm sure by phone and elsewhere talking right
now about wart Manual's future and the future of the
football program as well. So these are both up in
the air right now. I've been hearing these rumors for
a while, as you say, but consenting adults, there's not

(08:27):
a lot anybody can do.

Speaker 3 (08:28):
And these are rumors.

Speaker 4 (08:30):
But now of course that we're down to the nitty
gritty of reality, based on the employees' report yesterday, things
have changed quit dramatically. Sharon Moore is out of a job,
and I doubt he'll.

Speaker 3 (08:41):
Ever be coaching football again.

Speaker 1 (08:43):
Words you did not think you would hear when this
show started yesterday afternoon. Hey, there was a lot of
stuff we were going to get to yesterday as well
that obviously had to be table with the charw and
more news. We'll try to get to some of that today,
including some news and notes from around the NFL, some
signings that you should be aware in Major League Baseball,
the Rangers and Astros outlook after the Winter Meetings which

(09:05):
wrapped up yesterday.

Speaker 2 (09:06):
We'll get to that later on in the program.

Speaker 1 (09:08):
Today, we'll also talk about the potential candidates that could
rise up Michigan's hot board, whether or not they are
a practical fit, whether or not they're interested in the
Michigan job. We continue to track Notre Dame and they're
at times petty reactions to the College Football playoff snub.

(09:28):
They have been all over the news lately, and we'll
tell you what other schools are saying in response to
this memorandum of understanding, this legal agreement that Notre Dame
has now with the College Football Playoff Committee to receive
a bid if they're ranked in the top twelve without
winning a conference championship.

Speaker 2 (09:46):
We'll talk about all of that.

Speaker 1 (09:47):
We'll get to some Dallas Cowboys sound for Brian Schottenheimer
and Jerry Jones, and we'll hear from Longhorns women's basketball
head coach Vick Schaefer after his team went down to
Edinburgh beat utr G on an historic night for both
Rory Harmon and Madison Booker. All that coming up, but
first we'll get Craig Way's reaction to this Sharon More

(10:10):
story right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Okay,
checking in with Craig Way right before he leaves for Hartford,
going to go call Texas and Yukon. Just wanted to
get your reaction real fast to the news that came
down yesterday afternoon.

Speaker 2 (10:27):
We were actually doing the show.

Speaker 1 (10:29):
It just got done talking to one another and then
Charona Moore fired for cause at the University of Michigan.

Speaker 5 (10:35):
As more and more things start to unfold, the reaction
you asked me for it has gone from being surprised, stunned, shocked,
and as the tales continue to emerge, horrified. I guess
would be if everything that we're hearing and starting to

(10:58):
hear about what happened, and with regard hastening Michigan's decision
to fire him with cause. If those things are true,
then it's horrifying, but well, you know, we'll find out
over time. The first question I had a lot of

(11:19):
folks ask me when I was down in South Texas
yesterday was do you think Michigan will back out of
the bowl game?

Speaker 3 (11:25):
The answer is no.

Speaker 5 (11:28):
They quickly mentioned that Poge would take over on an
interim basis and would prepare the team for the bowl game.
So all plans are going forward for both schools. I
know Texas is planning the lead the players and coaching
staff planning the LEADU the day after Christmas, and I
think Michigan is as well. So I think the plans
are going forward. They're just going forward without torund More.

Speaker 1 (11:50):
You know, when Cam and I reacted yesterday as the
news was kind of coming out, we both said, WHOA,
this is bad timing for Michigan, right, because the coaching
carousel has kind of stopped. But I've read and listened
to some other perspectives on it, and the timing gets
a little bit more interesting because they waited right until
after signing day to where now they at least have

(12:10):
a class in place that they can hope to retain.

Speaker 5 (12:15):
Yeah, and then the portal opens on January second, So
even if they retain the signing class they have, there's
a good chance that guys may enter the portal who
are already on the roster anyway and may wind up
leaving in drugs. We've seen it happen before, not necessarily
it'll happen to Michigan.

Speaker 3 (12:33):
It'll be interesting to see.

Speaker 6 (12:34):
Also.

Speaker 5 (12:35):
I would imagine there will be some maybe not the majority,
maybe only a few, maybe a handful, maybe only a couple.
But history teaches us that there are some who sign
and then ask to be released from the LOI the
letter of intent because of the coaching change, and usually
the school will grant that. So that is going to

(12:58):
be interesting to follow. Of the core of the next
I would say three weeks to see once the portal
opens and where it goes from there.

Speaker 1 (13:07):
Do you feel like the ripple effects could extend to
Texas in any tangible way besides the upcoming matchups these
two teams, have.

Speaker 2 (13:17):
You mean from Michigan? From Michigan, I don't.

Speaker 5 (13:19):
I don't think it'll have any effect that those who
have already decided to leave Texas are going to enter
the portal. They've made their announcement. There may be a
couple others after its, but I don't think the Michigan
thing will have any have any effect on you know,
Texas players who are considering perhaps entering the portal and
moving on. I don't think Michigan's side of it as well.

(13:40):
I think, as Sarks said about a week ago, it's
up to each and every student athlete to decide what's
you know, what's best for them and what's good for them.

Speaker 1 (13:49):
Do you remember ever covering a story like this or
anything close to it in your career.

Speaker 5 (13:54):
Well, again, I'm curious to see as more details continue
to merge how dark this this may have gotten. But yeah,
I mean, you know, I covered of his A young
reporter covered SMU and the death penalty back in the eighties,
and that was just over time. That had happened like that,

(14:16):
The Baylor murder of Carlton Dots and the player there
and and by another player, and then the cover up
that happened off of that, that was that was really bad.
There have been other things like that as well. This
may not be on that level. But it's but it's
it's enough to shake people to their foundation.

Speaker 1 (14:38):
Well, Craig, I know you've got a flight to catch.
Travel safely. We'll touch base as this story continues to evolve.

Speaker 5 (14:44):
Yeah, and thanks for thanks for covering again today. I
will check in from Hartford, Connecticut where the high the
high tomorrow I think is going to be twenty nine,
so we'll we'll be indoors when we check in. Hope
you packed your coat?

Speaker 3 (15:00):
Yeah I did.

Speaker 2 (15:01):
Thanks, Okay, thanks Craig.

Speaker 1 (15:03):
I always appreciate Craig taking some time out of his
travel schedule to lend us his thoughts and some of
our thoughts. Turn now to the coaching search that's ongoing
at the University of Michigan, and here are some of
the names on Pete Knachos from on three his hot
board of Michigan coaches. Caitlin de Boor is at the

(15:27):
top of the list and currently coaching the Alabama Crimson
tied in the playoff against Oklahoma a week from tomorrow.
De Boor is likely going to be the first call
that Michigan makes. We're talking about a consistent winner. Remember
he took Washington excuse me to the.

Speaker 2 (15:47):
College football National Championship.

Speaker 1 (15:49):
That was the team that Michigan beat a couple of
seasons ago, and then de Boor went down to Tuscaloosa.

Speaker 2 (15:56):
Now is in year number two.

Speaker 1 (15:57):
Year number one obviously derailed by a couple of eight losses,
did not make the College Football Playoff, but this year
Alabama was the number one seed in the SEC regular season.
Despite the lopsided loss in the SEC Championship, they did
enough to stay in the College Football Playoff and they
are the number nine seat. He's won at every level.

(16:18):
He has ties to the Midwest. That's where he spent
most of his career and had a big rise at
the University of Sioux Falls before getting that Washington job,
amongst other stops. And he's somebody whom Michigan is going after.
Pete Fammil though today reporting that there is no indication
that Kayln de Boor is interested in the Michigan job.

(16:41):
And Kaylin de Boor was also linked to Penn State
a couple of weeks ago as that process was kind
of dragging on. Remember Penn State was the first to
fire their coach in this crazy college football carousel cycle.
Think about the jobs that have come open in this cycle,
Penn State, now Michigan, you ole miss floor, not necessarily

(17:04):
in that order in terms of jobs guys would want,
but it's going to open up so many different domino
effects down the college football world. Anyhow to pour on
the Penn State rumors? Address them before the SEC Championship game.
I'm gonna let you listen to his exchange with a
reporter here. This was in the media days for the
SEC Championship late last week.

Speaker 3 (17:26):
I catch.

Speaker 7 (17:27):
I know this is a little off topic, but since
we're all here for thirty minutes, just what do you
think when people link you to the Penn State job
and say that you and your family aren't happy at Alabama?

Speaker 8 (17:38):
Yeah, we are extremely happy at Alabama. The first time
I've been asked. So I appreciate you, Charlie, and we're
extremely happy here. Love the challenge, love the grind, love
this place. And there's never been any link. There's never
been any conversation, there's never been any interest either way,
and so I'm glad we can put that to bed
right now.

Speaker 2 (17:58):
Now.

Speaker 1 (17:58):
The Michigan job and the State job have a few differences.
Michigan obviously the winningest program in college football history, Michigan
with deeper pockets than Penn State at the moment, will
he get a payday from this in some way, shape
or form. Potentially there's a chance Alabama has to come

(18:18):
back and Greg Burr and the ad there matches whatever
Ward Manual and the Michigan Wolverines put forth to Kaitlin
de Boor. But what we're hearing is debor not expected
to really address this until after the College Football Playoff.
It's unlikely will hear anything unless there's been some back

(18:39):
channel work already being done by Michigan. And that's still
becoming clear as we figure out who knew what about
this sure own more situation, the inappropriate relationship with the staffer,
and when. So let's go down the list. Another name
getting some big time attention Kenny Dillingham, who took Arizona's

(19:02):
State to the College Football Playoff in twenty twenty four.
They had Texas on the ropes. Longhorn fans remember that
quinn Ewers clutch touchdown to Matthew Golden on fourth down
to save Texas's season, punch their ticket to the semi finals,
ultimately coming up short against Ohio State. Dillingham, though also
very vocal about shutting down rumors. He did so throughout

(19:23):
the season. He said he didn't talk to a single
other program during the season. Dillingham very active on social media,
very much a new school thinker in terms of NIL
and player empowerment, and he feels like a lot of
the things he says are very walk the walk in

(19:44):
terms of I'm in this for my players. They know
that Arizona State knows that. And in a landscape that
he's very critical of where everybody's going out necessarily And
Cameron used the term mercenary yesterday. Guys that you know,
transfer around maybe one season in hopes of just getting

(20:06):
to the NFL. Kenny Dillingham has pushed back on that
a lot. And it'll be interesting to see if Michigan
is interested in him number one and number two, how
he reacts, because Michigan's NIL resources different tier than what
he has right now at Arizona State. But Dillingham denying

(20:29):
any kind of interest at the moment. If you look
at some of the message boards, it's easy to.

Speaker 2 (20:36):
Fall into a rabbit hole.

Speaker 1 (20:38):
And Cameron and I were having some fun with this yesterday,
but some of the folks reporting for rivals for on
three at the Wolverine for Michigan are saying that that
sources are watching Kenny Dillingham closely to see if he
is interested. He would certainly bring a lot of spent

(21:00):
kind of that breadth of fresh air, energetic trendy higher
to Michigan and Dillingham also.

Speaker 2 (21:10):
Don't have a quarterback at the moment in Arizona State.

Speaker 1 (21:12):
Sam Levitt transferred well, intending to transfer in the upcoming
portal window. Other coaches listed Jesse Minner on this hot
board for the Michigan Wolverine search. There's a couple of
things in play here with Minner though. Remember he was
Jim Harbaugh's defensive coordinator during the National Championship run. So

(21:33):
he's been there right and he's had success at the
next level defensive coordinator right now with Jim Harbaugh and
the LA Chargers. Part of the reason he went with
was actually a show cause, a rule in fraction the
NCAA is imposing on jesse Minner that had nothing to

(21:55):
do with the Connor Stallions cheating, and this was about
talking to recruits when he wasn't supposed to. But jesse
Minner has a show cause would not be able to
directly engage with players or recruits or coaches until that
expires in April. Nonetheless, sources reporting that's not taking him

(22:16):
off the board entirely for Michigan. It would certainly post
some logistical challenges, and the other challenge comes from Minnor's perspective.
This is a defensive coordinator that's had a lot of
success with the Chargers over the last couple of years,
completely revamping that defense after Brandon Staley was fired, mainly
for the Chargers defensive woes. Jesse Minner is going to

(22:38):
be up for some NFL head coaching gigs in the
next cycle. We don't even know how many NFL jobs
will be open yet, So there's some hesitation for Michigan
side with the show cause there's some hesitation for Minnor's
side potentially with the prospect of being an NFL head coach.

Speaker 2 (22:57):
So those are a few names worth watching.

Speaker 1 (22:59):
Other coaches listed on the hot board Missouri's Eli Drinkwitz,
who has taken that Tigers program back to some heights
that they hadn't been in a couple of decades. Lincoln
Riley at USC now he's taken a couple of USC.

Speaker 2 (23:22):
Teams close to the postseason.

Speaker 1 (23:24):
You think back to twenty twenty two, they win that
Pac twelve title, they might be in the College Football Playoff.

Speaker 2 (23:33):
But you also look at a USC team, the Texan.

Speaker 1 (23:35):
Pretty disappointing road results in the Big Ten these last
couple of years. You know what loss took them out
of the playoff this season, Illinois. They lost at Illinois
earlier in the year. Lincoln Riley is not quite done
the job. I think that has been asked of him
at USC to this point. You look at Brian Kelly,

(23:55):
someone who was fired from LSU in October. He's got
ties to the state coaching at lower levels there. He
found success at Central Michigan, obviously taking Notre Dame to
the BCS Championship game. His record as a head coach
still outstanding. Just didn't go as planned for Kelly at LSU,

(24:20):
and we heard about how sour of a taste kind
of Kelly left those at LSU with some of the
ways he approached the job in the offseason. Do those
concerns keep Brian Kelly from the top of this list
for Michigan or do they go ahead and grab somebody
with his type of experience? Do they try to woo

(24:42):
Clark Lee away from Vanderbilt. Clark Lee is a Vanderbilt alum,
but at some point he keeps having this kind of
success in Nashville, a program like Michigan could come along
and offer him life changing money on top of what's
already good money at Vanderbilt. Diego Pavia fight whatever the
court cases are going to try and claim is going

(25:04):
to be out of eligibility here at Diego. Pavia one
of the Heisman finalists and a terrific year for Vanderbilt,
but he's someone who's able to take talent from the
portal and rebuild a team. That's what Michigan might need
given the circumstances of this firing. And then there's Jed Fish,

(25:27):
who's the one who took over at Washington for Kaylin
de Boor. Their offense improved from year one to year two,
still lost badly at the Big House against Michigan this year.
So those are some of the names up for the
Michigan head coaching jobs, still very early in the search,
where we don't know how long that will last. Time

(25:50):
might be of the essence with Michigan recruits, including a
couple of high profile players taken off guard by the
shore own More News. Other college football carousel notes a
couple of new defensive coordinators in the SEC.

Speaker 2 (26:11):
First, Jim Knowles, who was.

Speaker 1 (26:13):
Brought in on a big contract by James Franklin at
Penn State, negotiated a buyout and will be the new
defensive coordinator for Josh Heipel at Tennessee in twenty twenty six.
And then a shake up in college station as well. Kentucky.
Remember they hired Oregon's offensive coordinator Will Stein. I promise

(26:34):
it's hard to keep track of it. I get it
if you can't follow everything moving around in the carousel
in the midst of all the college football playoff talk.
But the carousel's moving. Will Stein the new head coach
at Kentucky after coming over from Oregon, where he's the
offensive coordinator. He'll be with them for the College Football Playoff,
but leaving to Lexington after that, working two jobs and

(26:56):
probably sleeping two hours a night at the moment, the
way John Summer'll put it, who's doing the same thing
coaching Tulane in the College Football Playoff and then getting
ready to head to Gainesville. Anyway, Kentucky and Will Stein,
they're gonna hire Jay Bateman, the defensive coordinator at Texas
A and M, for the same role at Kentucky. So

(27:18):
he's gonna remain with the Aggies through the College Football
Playoff and they'll host Miami New eleven AM Central December twentieth.
Kyle Field A and M said they're gonna promote Lyle
Hemphill their associate head coach for defense. He's been with
Mike Elco since their days back at Duke the beginning

(27:38):
of the decade. As for Jay Bateman, who will head
to Lexington, he's got experience coaching linebackers at Florida. Other
coordinator stints at North Carolina Army Ball State Andie Lawn.
This is an Aggie's defense that was top twenty in
total defense on the year.

Speaker 2 (27:54):
They were terrific on third down.

Speaker 1 (27:57):
And a lot of the development of SEC Defensive Player
of the Year Cashius Howell credited to Bateman, whose first
team All SEC kind of a controversial nod in Texas
fans eyes. They thought Colin Simmons perhaps a little more
deserving of that honor of the SEC Defensive Player of
the Year. So that means that both coordinators from that

(28:21):
Texas A and m team Colin Klein, who will be
heading to Kansas State to run the show over there,
and now defensive coordinator Jay Bateman heading to Kentucky for
the same position.

Speaker 2 (28:34):
That's an interesting move.

Speaker 1 (28:36):
As the college football playoff getting underway with all these
coaching changes in the background, we still have more college
football stories to get to, but we're going to put
a couple of them in the inconceivable category. Right after
this here on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone and
the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 5 (28:58):
Off to Grays Sarah outside into the corner, Grace Printer
a three pointer up.

Speaker 9 (29:03):
No good there it is the rebound by Booker, follow
shot God time out Texas.

Speaker 3 (29:10):
He's done it.

Speaker 9 (29:11):
Madison Booker with her first career triple double and punctuates
it with a follow up basket off threebound one oh
five forty five. Booker twenty eight points, ten rebounds, ten assists, the.

Speaker 2 (29:29):
First triple double of her career. Wow, that what a
I mean, that's how it sounded. Yeah, I'd be speechless too.

Speaker 1 (29:36):
Craig Way and Kathy Harston on the call from Burdog
Dennarita in Edinburgh, Texas with the Longhorns took care of
UTRGV one hundred and ten to forty five, improving to
eleven and oh on the season. I'm Jake Kerman in
for the Hall of Famer Craigway on the show today.
Craig is in the air, headed to Hartford to call

(29:57):
Texas versus yukon tomorrow night, which you can hear on
ninety eight one FM Cavet, part of the Longhorn Radio Network.

Speaker 2 (30:06):
But Madison Booker.

Speaker 1 (30:07):
Became the fifth player in program history for the Texas
women's basketball team to record a triple double twenty eight points,
ten assists, and ten rebounds. Rory Harmon also passed the
eight hundred assist mark for her career. Closing well Charity
has the program record in assists. She's closing in on
it in terms of steals fourteen morrissists for Rory Harmon

(30:27):
in the ballgame and Madison Booker talking postgame with Craig
about what's working well for her right now, what it
meant to play in this kind of environment and to
play the way she did.

Speaker 5 (30:40):
Got to ask you this because we were keeping track
of it starting in the third quarter.

Speaker 3 (30:44):
When did you become aware?

Speaker 5 (30:46):
When did somebody make you aware of the fact that
you were closing in on the triple.

Speaker 10 (30:51):
Dumb fourth quarter, Levada, you know, tell me I was
three is I think three two rebounds away, but you
see it took me a home what quarter did that?
But no, I mean my online is we have fun
and like I have one of my teammates doing it too,
So I think this is gonna be a very very
special triple.

Speaker 3 (31:07):
Double for me.

Speaker 5 (31:07):
Yeah, I started to say, the first one's always really.

Speaker 2 (31:10):
Special for sure. For sure, it's fun.

Speaker 5 (31:12):
Yeah, and you've gotten close a couple of times, so
I have, uh what and in given the fact that
you guys played so well in the first warning, I
know Coach wasn't real pleased with the second and the third,
but then you guys look like he kicked it back
in the high gear and the fourth.

Speaker 10 (31:25):
Yeah, I mean, coach, Coach metches message is simple, you know,
just keep beating, be humble, stay locked in for all
forty minutes. You know there's gonna be some other team
that's you know, really good for all forty minutes.

Speaker 2 (31:36):
So we got to also matter and energy and.

Speaker 10 (31:39):
Kind of also second half, just come just like come
out strong, you know, don't be kind of you know,
very lazy, very you know, just out there moving the flow.
I think, you know, with this team, our first five minutes,
it's going to show you know our opponent, you know
what's the matches and how we're coming. I think that's
what coach everyone will do every time we come out.

Speaker 5 (31:56):
You know, I asked him about the deal about you
getting it in the Assistan fans. He goes, I wanted
to hurry up and get her because I wanted to
get out, and you kept knocking down shots. Yeah, and
then on that last sequence there when you come down,
you know, what did he get into your mind?

Speaker 3 (32:09):
When you're just the one rebound way? I gotta I
gotta figure this out.

Speaker 10 (32:12):
I was like, man, I gotta get a board. But
then they kept Pennons shots, and then we kept HITTI shots,
and you know when Grace, you know, I'm sorry but.

Speaker 2 (32:20):
You had to miss that three.

Speaker 11 (32:21):
I'm sorry.

Speaker 2 (32:22):
I was thinking you had to missing three, and I
was trying to track in the air. But no, thank
you for Grace for asked this for every evound right there.

Speaker 5 (32:28):
Yeah, and then and then you able to hit the
foal shot after put an exclamation that was.

Speaker 2 (32:32):
Kind of cool right there.

Speaker 3 (32:33):
Actually it worked worked.

Speaker 2 (32:34):
Yeah, I knew it was going in.

Speaker 3 (32:35):
Hey, thanks for time.

Speaker 5 (32:36):
Book appreciate that, all right, Madison Booker there long Orange
with the win.

Speaker 1 (32:40):
And after the win, Craig also caught up with head
coach Vic Schaeffer.

Speaker 2 (32:46):
Here was his comments.

Speaker 3 (32:48):
Vic. We talked about it before the game.

Speaker 5 (32:50):
I know it meant a lot to you, and you
wanted it to mean a lot to this team to
be able to come down here and put on the
show and looked like the number two team in the country.

Speaker 3 (32:58):
And I think you did that to night.

Speaker 11 (32:59):
Well, first quarter for sure, I was a little disappointed
and disheartened by our effort. In the second half, I
think it started to garden number ten and you know,
we just didn't play as hard on that third coreter
and I just can't stand that, you know, I just
think the standard is the standard.

Speaker 12 (33:16):
I get it.

Speaker 11 (33:17):
I know it's hard, but at the end of the day,
you're just trying to teach kids to live by a standard,
no matter what it is, no matter the circumstance, the score,
whatever it is in life.

Speaker 3 (33:29):
And I thought our leadership was.

Speaker 11 (33:31):
Not very good in the second half when when I
really needed us to have that you know, killer instinct
put on the throat type deal. But we did finish
up that way and I really like that. And you know,
Booker getting a triple drouble and everybody excited about that.
Sarah Gray's making shots again. Just I was pleased for

(33:52):
the most part. Absolutely, Still, you got to take time,
You got to have teaching moments, Shaul you just you can't.
There's certain things that you just need. They are non negotiables.

Speaker 5 (34:02):
I mentioned that during that time out you called in
the third quarter. I said, your team's up by forty
nine points and you're working them.

Speaker 11 (34:08):
You're coaching. No, I mean there's none negotiables. I mean,
at the end of the day, there's non negotiables. And
you know, I just think we still have a so
much area to improve. I think you can. You can
because of the success we've had and all that. I
think you can get real like a day's school and
real satisfied and think you're all that in the bag

(34:29):
of beans and you're not.

Speaker 3 (34:32):
But I was really pleased with the first half.

Speaker 11 (34:34):
I was pleased with that you come out and score
seventy points on the road. I loved our transition. I
told them at halftime, we look like a pro team
coming down. In transition, we had people really with their
heads up looking to see what's available, taking advantage of
numbers and things like that, and so I really was
pleased with our transition. At halftime, it looked like the

(34:54):
whole bench was really engaged in watching book or go
for that triple doublet fight. I needed her to hurry
up and get I mean, I'm trying to get her
out and but you know, you don't get those opportunities
very much, and you know what, the kid.

Speaker 3 (35:06):
Deserves it, no doubt. Hey, thanks for the time, appreciate it. Hey,
thank you all for being here. Praise the Lord and
hook a horn.

Speaker 1 (35:10):
That's long Oarton's head coach, Vick Schaeffer, and that's Craig
Way who we visited with yesterday doing the interview and
he mentioned this. Vic Shaeffer very cognizant of why it's
important to bring his team down to Edinburgh. So many
fans come from different corners of South Texas to watch
Texas play the Longhorn. Saw several fans in burn Orange

(35:32):
at burd Ogden Arena, that G League arena yesterday, and
some of that goes into Vic Shaffer's decisions on whether
or not Texas would come back and play another game there.
This is how he responded to that question in his
postgame press conference.

Speaker 11 (35:48):
I mean, again, I'd do it for you know, I
have a lot of respect for coach Lord as well,
and I wouldn't do it for anyone else. And to
come down here and to be able to bring my.

Speaker 6 (35:59):
Team a team that I am so proud of.

Speaker 11 (36:01):
I mean, this team is special and you can coach
a long time and.

Speaker 3 (36:08):
Not have one.

Speaker 11 (36:09):
I've got to really, you know, we've got a really
special team. But these are two of the best guards
in the country. Ry Arman is the best point guard
in the country, and Booker's been two time you know,
player of the Year and with a small forward player
of the Year and and so been two time player
of the Year in both the Big twelve and the SEC.

(36:31):
So these times I don't take for granted. And to
be able to share them with the people in South
Texas is really cool and I do enjoy coming down here.

Speaker 3 (36:41):
The people are great.

Speaker 11 (36:42):
The Double Tree that was outstanding. It was great for
us there, and again you can see in that a
rent of the night. It's a lot of kids and
for these for these for my team to be able
to go out and impact these young ladies and young
boys in this community. Also, it's pretty cool. It's pretty

(37:02):
cool for me.

Speaker 12 (37:03):
I have more.

Speaker 11 (37:04):
I had as much joy after the game watching my
team interact with the fans and the young.

Speaker 6 (37:09):
People in this community is as much as I did
in the game.

Speaker 3 (37:12):
And I had a good time in the game.

Speaker 11 (37:14):
I thought my kids played really well the first half
and so, and you got to give you TRGV credit.
I thought they came out after halftime and really competed,
played really hard, didn't back down, and that's a credit
to them and their coach. So I'll always consider it.
I'll always consider coming down here. But again, a lot

(37:36):
of that has to do with coach and his program
and how how good of a coach he is, and
we get something out of.

Speaker 1 (37:41):
It, and that builds towards the longhorns next game on
Sunday afternoon. You can hear that right here on Sports
Radio A and thirteen hundred to zone. Our coverage starts
at eleven forty five am of the Sprouts Farmers Market
espn W Invitational that's a Dicky's Arena and fort Worth
against forteen ranked Baylor It's been an interesting series between

(38:02):
Texas and Baylor. Didn't play last year with the Longhorns
going to the SEC. Baylor has won seven of the
last ten meetings between these two schools. However, Texas three
pretty consequential wins in the last five, including a win
in the Big Twelve Championship to wrap up the twenty
twenty two season and then a win in Waco in
the final regular season Big Twelve meeting they had back

(38:25):
in twenty twenty four. The last three wins out of
those ten for Texas all came away from Austin. Baylor
has actually won seven straight actually even more than that,
more than ten straight meetings here in Austin between those
two teams, So neutral site adds a little bit of
a different wrinkle for Texas and Baylor on Sunday, So

(38:45):
that's the latest on Texas women's basketball. Eleven and zero
ranks second in the country.

Speaker 2 (38:50):
Coming up.

Speaker 1 (38:51):
CJ Vogel from on Texas Football weighs in on the
Sharon More firing and fallout, plus the latest on Texas
football as the transfer for portal starts to open. We'll
talk about that and much more here on Sports Radio
Am thirteen hundred Zone and the iHeartRadio app, but she
hates the.

Speaker 5 (39:10):
Small in one after she's hanging out with.

Speaker 1 (39:17):
Jesus nor back here on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred.
The Zone joined now by CJ Vogel College Football Inside
recruiting analysts with on Texas Football.

Speaker 2 (39:30):
CJ.

Speaker 1 (39:30):
There's been a lot of fun posts and crazy days
in this sport we love, but I don't think any
content brought a bigger smile to my face than you
yesterday having a little fun at Desmond Howard's expense, taking
the trash out while reacting to this sure own more news.

Speaker 2 (39:47):
I mean, first of all.

Speaker 1 (39:50):
Just want to get your reaction to everything that's transpired
out of Van Arbor in the last twenty four hours
or so.

Speaker 13 (39:56):
Well, first, I think you know those the necessary response
to Desmond Howard. It felt like he was throwing stones
that didn't need to be thrown at the time.

Speaker 3 (40:05):
And look for Steve Sarkisian in Texas. You know that's
a marriage.

Speaker 13 (40:08):
As long as arch manning here, you shouldn't have to
worry about anything, right.

Speaker 3 (40:12):
He wants to be at Texas.

Speaker 13 (40:13):
He's been on record for that number of times now,
But yesterday was a pretty wild day, and you mentioned it.
You know, there are times in this sport where we
have these wild days. I don't know where yesterday in
particular stacks up in comparison to some of those other days.
But boy, what a wild and quick turnaround was it
for folks up in ann Arbor. And my goodness, I'm

(40:35):
sure there's gonna be ripple effects all over the country
starting with who fills that job in ann Arbor? And
where else do jobs then open up? Now that we're
December eleventh, we're pretty deep into, you know, the heart
of the transition period.

Speaker 14 (40:49):
Right.

Speaker 1 (40:49):
As someone who covers recruiting, CJ, what do you make
of this timing?

Speaker 13 (40:55):
Yeah, I think it's at first, it's a disaster for
the signing class at Michigan right in a way I
was making the joke earlier, you know. It's it's wild
that we just watched a school in the Big ten,
you know, with on its first ten candidates for a
vacant head coaching position, signed two recruits in a single class,
and all of a sudden they're kind of being looked
at like, you know what, it's not as bad there

(41:16):
as what it looks like in inn Arbor, right, now,
and today we saw the first release of an NLI
that went to four star tight end Matt Ludwig. There's
gonna be plenty of others for Michigan in particular. Look,
not only do you have a game to prepare for
in December thirty first against the Texas Longhorns, but you
have to also deal with your portal, your high school class,
and just about everything else inside of your office remaining

(41:38):
afloat in. Right now, it doesn't look like there's gonna
be much many people left on that live draft.

Speaker 2 (41:44):
We're talking with CJ. Vogel of On Texas Football.

Speaker 1 (41:47):
You can follow him at CJ Vogel Underscore ot FF.

Speaker 2 (41:51):
You mentioned the ripple effects.

Speaker 1 (41:52):
Klin de Boor is a name that's been circulating all
day long. There are reports out of Tuscaloosa today, no
indication that he's leaving. He seems to make sense as
maybe Michigan's first choice. But who else could you see
Michigan calling if Kaylin de Boor hangs up the phone?

Speaker 13 (42:09):
Yeah, I think that's really interesting, right, Kaylen de bor
For whatever reason, his name seems to pop up pretty
often when.

Speaker 3 (42:15):
These Marquis jobs start to.

Speaker 13 (42:17):
Pop around, and of course he has ties to the Midwest.
I think Michigan would be a school where the nil
pockets in comparison to that of Alabama would be a
little bit deeper. He's voiced some frustration. In fact, I've
heard that nil pockets over at Alabama aren't as deep
as he would like them to be. So if not,
Kaylen de Bor, look you got to start looking around
to who else might be valid options. And look, Matt

(42:40):
Campbell making his decision about a week ago. I wonder
if one Michigan regrets the timing of all of this,
and two if Matt Campbell regrets the signing of Penn State,
that seems to be a job that he had always
vied for. But look, Brian Kelly still available. I don't
know if Michigan ever sees him as a fit or
anybody else, but they certainly would have to start battling
out some other currently signed or recently extended head coaches,

(43:05):
in which at that point you really have to start
phoning up some money to get the guy and the
answer that they desperately need.

Speaker 1 (43:12):
You know, I hear Brian Kelly, he hasn't even won
all his games yet.

Speaker 2 (43:15):
I mean, how could you call.

Speaker 3 (43:16):
Him yet I guess that's true.

Speaker 2 (43:19):
Well, we'll see where they end up going.

Speaker 1 (43:21):
I mentioned Kenny Dillingham as a possibility earlier on the show.
That's a name that I could see them going after.
And Glenn Schuman from Georgia maybe an under the radar
candidate as well. We've got a playoff bracket in front
of us now. We spent a lot of time talking
about it. You know, it feels like forever ago. It
was only a week ago. Texas was still campaigning to

(43:42):
try and be in the College Football Playoff.

Speaker 2 (43:43):
It didn't work out that way for the Longhorns this year.

Speaker 1 (43:46):
But just wanted to get your thoughts on the committee's
choices and whether.

Speaker 2 (43:49):
Or not they got this thing right.

Speaker 3 (43:52):
Yeah.

Speaker 13 (43:53):
Look, I didn't think Texas was a playoff team. I
think they got that right. I think they got it
right with BYU. I know it's a shame for folks
up in Provo, but ultimately the big surprise and where
I've I've kind of not been one hundred percent on board,
even with the head to head, but you have Notre
Dame ahead of Miami for every single week of the

(44:13):
College Football Playoff, and on a week in which there
is not a single game played between the two. You
make the switch for the final at large spot. That
doesn't sit right with me. And I understand, I know, folks,
and this isn't a popular opinion. I know folks are
looking at Notre Dame as quitters for this season, and
you know they are. They are quite frankly they are.
But I understand why they said, you know what, screw it,

(44:36):
I'm done with this. You know, we were just promised
a Bowl spot. It felt like we were in. Now
that the committee kind of went behind our backs and
because of how faulty there, you know, comparison guidelines are,
we're now left out after thinking for a month and
a half that we were going to be in. I
think that's one spot for me where I I did

(44:56):
not like seeing that, And I think it's such a
dangerous president that, hey, we're regardless of if you're playing
on conference championship championship week or not.

Speaker 3 (45:04):
It's not set in stone.

Speaker 1 (45:06):
So the Texas media tour kind of ends, and we'll
talk about the Long Horns and the portal in a moment.
But then this news breaks from Dan Wilkin that Notre
Dame has signed an agreement, a memorandum of understanding that
if they finish top twelve next year and the playoff
doesn't expand, or if they finish top thirteen, if the
playoff expands, and so forth, they're in regardless of conference

(45:28):
championship ties.

Speaker 2 (45:29):
And now today we're hearing pushback from other.

Speaker 1 (45:31):
Schools threatening to ice them out in non conference scheduling.
What in the wild West of college football is going
on here with the Irish.

Speaker 13 (45:40):
Look, I know I just went to bat for Notre Dame,
but this is ridiculous. The idea that there's a handshake
agreement or a verbal agreement with Notre Dame and the
CFP that if they are ranked in a certain spot
that they would be guaranteed a position in the colag
Football playoff. Look, I think that's disingenuous to the sport.
I think it disintegrates a number of the value that
this sport brings in as well. It's ridiculous that they're

(46:03):
getting pampered and getting the preferential treatment that they are.
And I think teams and other conferences, I think there
should conference wide approaches across the country to say, hey,
Notre Dame, it's time, it's time for you to join
one of us, whether it's the ACC the Big Ten shoot.
I know that there's been conversations with the SEC as well.
It's time you cannot continue to pick cherry pick your

(46:27):
twelve game schedule and then pretend that, oh, because we
played twelve games regardless, it is on equal footing as
every other team in the country when it quite simply
is not.

Speaker 1 (46:37):
And on the front where Pete Bivaqua is kind of
campaigning on Notre Dame's behalf, he's saying, what you said,
how can Notre Dame in Miami flip spots when neither
of them played.

Speaker 2 (46:49):
Do you think this means we've seen the last.

Speaker 1 (46:51):
Of the Tuesday night ranking shows and the gradual kind
of reality show reveals that come along the way.

Speaker 13 (46:59):
I don't think so, because then I think that would
entail that you're getting a set number of teams per
conference with very precise, measurable you know, requirements or pre
reps to then determine who goes on to play in
the college football Playoff. And I think were are aways
from that.

Speaker 14 (47:18):
Right.

Speaker 13 (47:18):
You know, in the NFL you can do that because
there's thirty two teams. You can very clearly determine who
wins each conference or each division because you get to
play each other twice.

Speaker 3 (47:26):
Right, the tiebreakers are very clear.

Speaker 13 (47:28):
With how large these conferences are, it's going to be
impossible to determine a very set and you know, set
standard of you know, qualifications for each conference to have
certain tiebreakers. And as a result, you kind of need,
you know, what you would consider to be non partial,
you know, unbiased voices to determine who then would be

(47:51):
the type you know, the tiebreaker for these teams.

Speaker 1 (47:53):
Yeah, and I suppose that's the biggest obstacle for folks
who say this is getting more and more like professional sports.
You cover recruiting, you want understand the way things work
right now with the money changing hands. Some people say,
why do we need a committee? We have these these conferences,
why not go to aqs? That bloated conference argument, I
think is the best response to that.

Speaker 13 (48:13):
Yeah, I think so. Look again, you look at an
A and M season this year. You play everybody in
the bottom half of the conference, and the one team
that you don't play you lose to. You won all
of your games, and that's great, but there's fair questions
to ask of how talented and how good are you
in regards to the rest of the conference? Ohio State
and Indiana very similar where they weren't tasked with playing

(48:34):
a lot of the upper echelon teams. And then you
look at Texas on the outsides, looking in, right, five
teams you played this year inside the top ten at
the time. Now that is, you know, inequitable schedules.

Speaker 2 (48:47):
Across the conference is and across.

Speaker 3 (48:49):
College football, and something that.

Speaker 13 (48:50):
I'm sure conference directors and you know, athletic directors everywhere
are starting to look, you know, much deeper into to say, hey,
if it doesn't matter to the committee, why should it
matter to us in terms of how difficult a schedule
it is that we are scheduling and playing.

Speaker 1 (49:03):
Ultimately, Yeah, I mean it's December eleventh and Texas is
still Ohio State's best win. Onto the Longhorns. News about
two players dropped today. The first Derek Williams, junior in
the transfer portal, played a big role as a freshman.
What do you make of this news and how do
you see the Longhorns maybe attacking the portal in the secondary?

Speaker 3 (49:24):
Yeah, First, I.

Speaker 13 (49:25):
Think it's unfortunate because you go back to that twenty
twenty three season when he was a true freshman, and
you know, towards the back end of that year, you
started to say, oh, Derek Williams, you know, you're seeing
a lot of them. He's playing a lot and he
probably should should play a little bit more. Right, he
was your best cover safety at the time when Texas
was headed to play against Washington College Football Playoff and

(49:47):
then the ACL injury occurred against Oklahoma in twenty twenty four,
and you know, I don't know if he ever really
got fully backed into being that player that he was
as a true freshman. And that's really where the unfortunate
part is. But you start looking at who was playing
safety when Texas was dinged up in the back half
of the season, you saw more Xavier fields than me.

Speaker 3 (50:05):
You saw JOHNA. Williams. The final two weeks of the season.

Speaker 13 (50:07):
It felt to me that Texas was ready to move
into what other options that they had, given that Derek
Williams was still on the roster at the time. So
I think it was set in stone, especially with the
season long.

Speaker 3 (50:20):
Development of JOHNA.

Speaker 13 (50:21):
Williams getting him to where they felt like they could
trust him to put on the field. That was where
where I felt like the decision was ultimately made.

Speaker 1 (50:29):
And then another guy to bring up in the secondary
talking with CJ. Vogel from on Texas Football, is Wardell Mack.
That will reports this morning that he was into the
transfer portal. Now folks are saying he's staying at Texas.
This is someone that a lot of folks think might
start next season at the star position if Grace and
Littleton were to move.

Speaker 3 (50:47):
Yeah.

Speaker 13 (50:47):
Look, I know that he was on the practice field
this morning. You know, the Texas Longhorns practice this morning
from what nine to eleven or ten to twelve or
something like that.

Speaker 3 (50:56):
He was out on the practice field this morning. I
was told.

Speaker 13 (51:00):
Look, news of his portal entry was actually news to him.
So while there is still obviously a month and a
half for him to then enter his name into the portal,
for now, he is sticking at Texas. He plans to
practice all the way through and participate in the bulgan.

Speaker 1 (51:15):
When something like this happens, is it a matter of
maybe somebody running with the rumor or is it potentially
for a player like this, someone in their camp doing
something behind their back.

Speaker 13 (51:26):
You know, it could be a little bit of both, right,
you know, I know that there are agents vying for
extra money elsewhere, and the best way to create money
for yourself is to create a demand.

Speaker 3 (51:35):
How do you create a demand?

Speaker 13 (51:36):
Will you enter the NCAA transfer portal or you you know,
essentially start rumors that you're going to insert or enter
the NCUBA transfer portal, in which then your demand increases
to retain or to then find yourself a new home.
But for the sake of Wardel mac look, I think
it was again a guy that maybe folks expected, that

(51:57):
got wind of something and then you know, they went
with it. But until you hear it from him himself,
I think it's safe to assume that he's going to
be on this roster for the rest of de sunder.

Speaker 1 (52:07):
It's just one of those months of the season where
I think a lot of fans are kind of afraid.
It's almost like no news is good news right now
when everybody is making their decisions about their future as
far as this Texas program goes, and this young Texas
team goes, what are you going to watch for in
the Citrus Bowl CJ. It still remains one of the
most watchable Bowl games, maybe even more so now with

(52:28):
what's happened off the field at Michigan. What's going to
be keeping your attention most on the field in this game?

Speaker 13 (52:35):
Yeah, well, I'll tell you, And in the time leading
up to the Citrus Wall, I'll be watching how many
Michigan players opt out or portal?

Speaker 3 (52:41):
Right, you know, because that's a dumpster fire.

Speaker 13 (52:42):
I would not want to be playing right now in
the amazing Blue But on the field, and for Texas perspective, here, look,
I think there's a number of things And the first
to me is do we see Bo Barnes get on
the field that linebacker?

Speaker 15 (52:54):
Right?

Speaker 13 (52:54):
Texas has a talented trio. Does Trey More play? His
eligibility is up, he's off to the NFL. We know
that Anthony Hill is off to the league. We don't
expect him to play in the bowl game this on
December thirty. First, that leaves you ty Anthony Smith, Leong
Lafal and bow Barnes.

Speaker 3 (53:11):
But Tyler Atkinson coming in.

Speaker 13 (53:12):
Can Bo Barnes establish himself as somebody that can you
find the rotation and fend off the talented incoming true freshman.

Speaker 3 (53:20):
That's gonna be point one.

Speaker 13 (53:21):
On top of that, do we finally start to see
some playtime given fifteen extra Bowl practices for Jamie Frinch,
ch A, Kalie Clockett, and Michael Terry the third Michael
Terry right now getting some running back in practice. That's
gonna be really interesting to me when it comes to
how can these guys maximize each and every practice that
they have with this Bowl game coming up.

Speaker 1 (53:44):
I won't ask you to speculate things that maybe you
don't know for sure yet, but finish this sentence, don't
be surprised if in the transfer portal, Texas does what.

Speaker 13 (53:56):
I'll say, adds five offensive linemen. I think that's a stretch.
I think that's a stretch, but I wouldn't be surprised
given what this season look like.

Speaker 3 (54:04):
Three is the minimum for me.

Speaker 13 (54:06):
I think they could go all the way up to
fivepending on who else ters right now.

Speaker 1 (54:10):
Wow, So a complete potential overhaul up front with that group.
And we don't know obviously whether or not Trevor Gooseby
is coming back to play next season yet schedule comes
out tonight, nine game.

Speaker 2 (54:21):
Sec schedule moving forward.

Speaker 1 (54:24):
Whether you like that decision or not, from the Texas perspective,
it's happening. What are you watching for in terms of
the way Texas hopes it shakes out.

Speaker 3 (54:32):
Yeah.

Speaker 13 (54:32):
The big thing for me is, you know, when these
bye weeks are planted within you know, SEC schedules. You know,
for Texas they were zero and three when they had
an extended amount of time coming off of a bye, right,
and that's Florida, Georgia on the road and obviously Ohio
State to begin the season. Who does Texas play when
they come off of a bye when they have that
extended amount of time. On top of that, for Texas's opponents,

(54:56):
you know, where do the bye weeks fall for them?
Are they able to prepare with an extra amount of
time coming into games? Typically Texas is able to go
into Oklahoma off of a bye this week and when
Oklahoma then by so I'll be really interested there.

Speaker 2 (55:11):
Yeah, that's one of the things.

Speaker 1 (55:13):
Speaking of Alabama and Oklahoma, who are in the College
Football Playoff playing one another on Friday, they both had
to deal with a lot of rest disadvantages. So talking
more about imbalanced schedules, not only did they face the
top half of the league, they often did it when
the opposing team had either an open week or a
cupcake leading up.

Speaker 2 (55:30):
That's definitely something to watch out.

Speaker 3 (55:32):
For yeah, one hundred percent.

Speaker 13 (55:33):
Looking again with how big these conferences are on and
I'm excited that Texas moving in the SEC, is moving
to a nine game schedule and conference play, but there's
still going to be some schedules that are significantly more favorable,
especially with how the season start to play out than
some of the others.

Speaker 2 (55:50):
Talking with CJ.

Speaker 1 (55:51):
Vogelavon Texas football, last question for you as we transition,
you're going to hear from Sean Miller a little bit
after the break. What do you see in terms of
Texas men's basketball right now heading into the Yukon game.

Speaker 13 (56:02):
Oh, off guard there, Yeah, no for for Texas basketball.
Look to me, it's all about how does Jordan Pope
figure into this offense. Is he a guy that's facilitating
on a single night. Is he a guy that's looking
to create and distribute? If so, Texas will have a
fun night shooting the ball. He's done a fine job

(56:23):
of drawing in defenses and kicking to an open guy
on the perimeter. And when that's the case, Texas more
times than not able to have a good shooting night.
When Jordan Pope is not able to distribute and create,
that's when Texas gets into ruts and they try to
force the ball to modus down low, and that ultimately
I know that you just had a hell of a
game on Tuesday, but look against a team like Yukon,

(56:43):
a team like what you'll see in the in the
sec they're gonna have answers from autos and now you
need to be able to create shots from the from
the exterior. And that's something that altogether this year I've
not seen enough consistency with.

Speaker 1 (56:57):
And I think Sean Miller asking for that consistency on
the defense to the side of the floor too.

Speaker 2 (57:01):
CJ. I gotta let you go. Thanks so much for
stopping by.

Speaker 1 (57:04):
As always, Thanks Gig, thanks for having me on at
CJ Vogel from on Texas Football. Give him a follow
on X at CJ Vogel Underscore OTF. He had some
great fun at Desmond Howard's expense when that Michigan news
came out yesterday. We'll circle back on that a little
later in the program. As promised, we'll ship gears to
Texas men's basketball. And here from Sean Miller. In a moment,

(57:25):
This is Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred.

Speaker 2 (57:27):
The Zone needs some time to get it off.

Speaker 15 (57:29):
Yeld chests.

Speaker 1 (57:34):
Back here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred zone, Jay
German in for Craig today. He's on his way to
Hartford as we speak to call the UT women's basketball Matt,
excuse me.

Speaker 2 (57:44):
UT men's basketball matchup with.

Speaker 1 (57:47):
Yukon, currently ranked number six in the country at nine
to one, just took down Florida and the Jimmy V
Classic in their last action on Tuesday night. Sean Miller's
had some success against Yukon with his past teams, particularly
as a Big East foe at Xavier. He was asked
what some of the common threads were among the Dan

(58:08):
Hurley teams he's seen and what his team will have
to do in Hartford on Friday night.

Speaker 16 (58:14):
Con It starts in in transition, where although if you
look at their tempo, it reflects a team that's very deliberate,
but they usually break their games open in transition off
of their defense. They hunt three point shots, they share
the ball, and they have the ability like to really

(58:36):
just have a burst or multiple pockets in the game
where they go on to six nothing, eight nothing, tend
two run. And when you look at the reason why
they get block shots, steels stops, and they're great at
pushing the pace and sharing the ball and in particular
killing you with three point shots off of your missus.

(58:58):
So got to run good off, got to take care
of the ball, and you have to get back. You
can't allow them to create those opportunities in transition when.

Speaker 3 (59:08):
They're in the half court.

Speaker 16 (59:09):
You know, they do more screening off the ball than
maybe any college team, So a lot like Virginia, they
break you.

Speaker 6 (59:17):
In the last ten seconds.

Speaker 2 (59:19):
So in transition, it's fast.

Speaker 16 (59:21):
In the half court, it's super slow, it's deliberate, a
lot of screening, and really what they can do is,
you know the old adage, you're only as strong as
your weakest link. They have the ability in their half
court to pick on a guy who can't do it,
and that guy oftentimes lets his team down. So you know,
that consistency, that toughness in the half court, they really

(59:42):
make you defend them five on five. Third part for
them is when oftentimes they don't have a great shooting night,
they're really good on the offensive glass, physical, they're relentless,
they get second shots. So those are three things that,
like any team wants to have, a team's good in transition,
maybe not as good in half court, or they're really

(01:00:04):
good in the half court, but they don't really look
to run. Yukon does both, and then usually if you
do both, you don't really get second shots. They do
that as well, So they have constant pressure on your
defense from the opening tip to the final buzzer, and
you know, like you have to be about it, like
you have to understand the challenge that's in front of you.

(01:00:25):
And then on defense, they play with amazing effort. They
will foul, they will block shots, they will get steals,
and you just you have to be able to take
care of the ball against their pressure, especially on their
home court. When the teams that I've had have played
well against Yukon, we've checked the box in all four
of those areas. And look, we've played some great games

(01:00:49):
against them. You know, last year, for example, we lost
in double overtime in Hartford, and we beat them at home.

Speaker 6 (01:00:57):
A year earlier, I don't even want to talk about it.

Speaker 16 (01:01:00):
My first year at Xavier, we actually beat them twice
at Yukon and at home, and that was their first
national championship. So we've had the ability to play great
games against them, but there's no coach and there's no
program that I respect more than Yukon and Dan Hurley.

Speaker 2 (01:01:17):
Well, here a little more from Sean Miller.

Speaker 1 (01:01:18):
Tomorrow will also preview that game in depth with a
couple of good guests tomorrow here on Sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred The Zone. And we do have some news
to follow up on surrounding the Michigan situation.

Speaker 2 (01:01:33):
It's such an evolving story. There a couple of items.

Speaker 1 (01:01:36):
Number One, it's being reported by On three in Pete
Nachos that Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood, remember the number one
recruit who flipped from LSU to Michigan, receiving what was
a record setting contract between ten and twelve million dollars
four year deal to play at Michigan and I owe money.
Sources have told On three that those back Bryce Underwood's

(01:02:01):
camp are going to pay close attention to who the
next hire is. I guess that kind of went without saying,
but that the contract that Bryce Underwood signed at Michigan
does not include a buyout, so that makes it possible
for Bryce Underwood to enter the transfer portal. And obviously,
whoever Michigan hires priority number one going to be keeping

(01:02:22):
a talented QB like him in ann Arbor. And then
another development in this story we discussed Sharrod Moore, who's
currently in custody under the watch of mental health professionals,
be arraigned apparently in court tomorrow, facing possible assault charges

(01:02:43):
for what happened in the aftermath of his firing. Nicole
Auerback reports that Michigan had been alerted prior to Wednesday
that sharrodan Moore was dealing with mental health issues. Some
of the reports of his actions after the firing, including
threats to harm both himself and others, certainly make this

(01:03:04):
story take on a whole different tone. And yet, according
to what a source told Nicole hourback Ward, manual fired
him was aware of these issues, no hr REP and
no security present, and those things, if true, might have
been able to prevent some of these disastrous ramifications from

(01:03:26):
happening afterwards. So more details emerging emerging in what is
a very unpredictable and ultimately pretty sad story right now
coming out of ann Arbor, where Shrod Moore is no
longer the head coach of the Michigan Wolverines, the Longhorns
opponent in the Cheese At Citrus bull We're giving away
some Texas men's basketball tickets. On the other side of

(01:03:49):
this break still to come. Some MLB Hot Stove signings
today to catch you up on, including what the Rangers
and Astros are thinking after winter meetings, but their outlook is.
We'll talk about the Dallas Cowboys in kind of a
must win game.

Speaker 2 (01:04:03):
Against the Minnesota Vikings this week.

Speaker 1 (01:04:04):
Here from Jerry Jones, Brian Schottenheimer, some other news from
around the NFL as well. Right here on Sports Radio
A on thirteen hundred Zone and the iHeartRadio app One
more hour to go on this Thursday afternoon. Jake German
with you on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred the Zone.
Going to get to some NFL news as we start

(01:04:27):
the four o'clock hour of the show, starting with a
story that in most weeks would be grabbing all the headlines,
but we didn't even have time to get to it
yesterday with the news out of Shrow and Moore in Michigan,
and that's Philip Rivers being signed to the Indianapolis Colts
practice squad at the age of forty four. This, of course,
comes in the wake of the devastating injuries that the

(01:04:50):
Colts suffered at the position. Remember they were eight and two,
leading the Chiefs by eleven points in the fourth quarter
three weeks ago. Daniel Jones tour his achilles and the
first half of their game against the Jaguars last week,
and then Riley Leonard came on in relief and is
dealing with what they're calling a PCL injury. That's the
same type of knee injury that held Ricky Piersoll out

(01:05:11):
for a long stretch of this season. It's a tough
one to play through and they don't know necessarily if Riley.

Speaker 2 (01:05:18):
Leonard will be available this week.

Speaker 1 (01:05:21):
So they've turned to Philip Rivers, who had been in
touch with Shane Steiken over the last well on a
weekly basis, according to reports, because he's the coach for
one of his sons at Saint Michael Catholic in Fair Hope, Alabama,
who were running the same type of offense that Shane

(01:05:43):
Steiken does, obviously not the exact same carbon copy, so
they had this relationship. Rivers last played for Steiken in
Indianapolis during the COVID season of twenty twenty, so his
son's team, Son Gunner, lost in the state seventi five
Finals on November twenty eighth. So, okay, that takes care
of Philip Rivers' schedule, right, He's theoretically available. And now

(01:06:08):
we have this possibility that because of the injuries to
Jones and Leonard, as well as Anthony Richardson, their first
round rookie from three drafts ago, who is dealing with
an eye problem he picked up during a workout accident,
a freak accident with an elastic band, a weight resistance band,
suffered orbital fractures, dealing with some eye issues at the moment,

(01:06:32):
he's not going to be available to play anytime soon.
So Philip Rivers not only on the roster but practicing.
We'll see if he is activated to the active roster.
But he was introduced to the media in Indianapolis earlier
this week. This was a couple of days ago, and
these were his answers to some questions. First, how did

(01:06:54):
his family react to this decision at forty four years
old to try and give it another go.

Speaker 12 (01:07:00):
They've been very supportive. You know, I think my younger
children are most excited. I shouldn't say most excited. They're
excited because they don't remember dad playing. You know, my
six year old actually asked me like four months ago, like, Dad,
why don't you play anymore? And I'm like, I'm sorry, best,
you're gonna get his me coaching on the sideline, you know,
because they were seeing, you know, a highlight or they're
pulling up some you know, old games. Uh, my boys
were fired up, obviously, but I think share the same

(01:07:24):
sentiment a little nervous, like Dad, you can do you
think you can do it, you know. And then my
older girls are really excited because they're they're a little
bit confused. They're like, shoot, I was twelve, you know
some of them, you know, now all of a sudden
they're grown adults, married and and they remember sixteen years
old going to the ballgame. So it's, uh, it's been,
it's been. It's been a whirlwind for forty eight hours,

(01:07:44):
I'll say.

Speaker 1 (01:07:45):
Not only is Philip Rivers older than twelve active NFL
head coaches at the age of forty four, he's also
a Hall of Fame semi finalists. And if Rivers is activated,
right if he goes from the practice squad to the
active roster, that Hall of Fame candidacy clock resets for

(01:08:07):
five more years. Did that weigh on his decision at all.

Speaker 12 (01:08:11):
Yeah, you know, the the Chargers deal in the summer
was special, uh and emotional. Shoot, they surprised me for
those linemen coming down there, and and again that was
the intent. I mean again, I had no I'm not
given any thought of actually, you know, playing again, uh,
and until about forty eight hours ago. And to be
honest with you, so but it's just it seemed like

(01:08:34):
just you know, this wasn't just any place or any
coach or it wasn't you know, It's not like all
a shoot, I hope to see what happens.

Speaker 3 (01:08:41):
In the league and I'll see if I can get ready.
It wasn't that.

Speaker 12 (01:08:44):
And you know, you're missing the Hall of Fame, and
it's been a real uh, it's a real honor to
be mentioned with those other twenty five guys, certainly, but
you know that's just not I'm not I'm not holding
my breath on that, and I'm not I hadn't been
counting down the years. I mean and with a respect
to the Hall, and if one day I can be
a part of that group, it will be special, no

(01:09:06):
question about it. But the extension of that time if
that comes to be is not was not a factor.

Speaker 3 (01:09:12):
In my thinking.

Speaker 1 (01:09:14):
So the hall might have to wait that that point
he was talking about at the beginning of the sound
bite forgot to mention Philip Rivers signed a one day
contract and retired as a charger, and now he might well,
he has unretired to sign with the Indianapolis Colts practice squad.
So veering into lighthearted territory in this press conference, partially

(01:09:39):
tongue in cheek, Rivers was asked, what's your what's your
weight at the moment?

Speaker 2 (01:09:42):
What's your playing weight at the moment right this second?

Speaker 12 (01:09:47):
I'm not sure, Ray, how about that?

Speaker 15 (01:09:52):
That's the honest answer.

Speaker 1 (01:09:56):
He's a good sport, Philip Rivers. He would circle back
and i'llow up on it a few moments later, and.

Speaker 12 (01:10:01):
I will answer a question a little better on the planeway, Greg,
not not what it was when I walked up the
film Buffalo, All right, I can.

Speaker 3 (01:10:09):
Tell you that.

Speaker 15 (01:10:10):
But then I'll follow that.

Speaker 12 (01:10:11):
Up with I ain't never ran away from anybody anyway.
So so I'm they you know, people say, well, they
know you're gonna be right there, and it's like, well
they knew that for sixteen seventeen years, So.

Speaker 2 (01:10:23):
Well, he's right.

Speaker 1 (01:10:24):
Philip Rivers, as the USA Today put it, never really
had speed as part of his game. His forty yard
dashtime out of college in peak physical shape five point
eight forty yard dash, and looking at his career, he's
got one one hundred yard rushing season. During the twenty
twenty COVID season with the Colts, he had eighteen carries

(01:10:47):
for negative eight yards. Remember in the NFL, sacks don't
count as negative passing yards.

Speaker 2 (01:10:53):
Career for Philip Rivers, sixteen seasons, six.

Speaker 1 (01:10:57):
Hundred rushing yards, three rushing touchdowns, all wop in one
point six yards per carry.

Speaker 2 (01:11:04):
So he's right.

Speaker 1 (01:11:05):
He's not running away from anyone. It's just about whether
or not he's got the arm strength. We know he
has the understanding of the offense. Like he said, there's
no concerns from the neck up if you're Philip Rivers.
It's just about whether or not he can hold up physically.
Some of the same questions, unfortunately, have come to mind

(01:11:28):
for another high profile quarterback. That's Joe Burrow of the
Cincinnati Bengals, who, at a press conference yesterday this happened
right as our show was wrapping up, seemed to hint
at the idea that he wasn't having fun in the NFL,
and you can understand the Bengals haven't had the season

(01:11:49):
they've hoped for. Joe Burrow, as far as injuries goes
has had a really tough run out here. This is
the third season already for Joe Burrow since coming out
of college in twenty twenty that has been severely limited
by injuries, I think, including the second half of his
of his rookie season when he towards acl and Joe
Burrow kind of had a somber, reflective tone in his

(01:12:11):
press conference today. Philip River is right. He said, I
have no concern from the neck up. It's all about
can my body hold up? Joe Burrow, his body has
not exactly held up to the extent he hoped in
his young NFL career, and that's starting to creep up
in between his ears down and affect his mindset a
little bit. I'm going to play you in exchange from

(01:12:33):
his press conference today and lets you kind of judge
for yourself that the feeling I'm talking about change the.

Speaker 15 (01:12:41):
Way that you threw the games. No, it's certainly doesn't.

Speaker 17 (01:12:52):
Changed my desire to win, you know, if I want to,
I don't want to keep doing this.

Speaker 15 (01:13:02):
I have to have fun doing it.

Speaker 14 (01:13:04):
Uh.

Speaker 15 (01:13:06):
You know, I've been through a lot, and if it's
not fun, then what am I doing it for?

Speaker 10 (01:13:11):
Ah?

Speaker 15 (01:13:12):
So that's the mindset I'm trying to bring to the table.
How are you having right now? Is it difficult to
have fun?

Speaker 5 (01:13:19):
Then?

Speaker 15 (01:13:20):
The season?

Speaker 18 (01:13:21):
What you've been through physically, emotionally, all of it.

Speaker 15 (01:13:24):
Is it tough?

Speaker 3 (01:13:27):
Yeah?

Speaker 15 (01:13:27):
Certainly?

Speaker 3 (01:13:29):
Did you have fun playing?

Speaker 1 (01:13:30):
Or do you?

Speaker 3 (01:13:30):
I mean, how much of it was fun before?

Speaker 6 (01:13:32):
I winnings always wanned, But.

Speaker 3 (01:13:33):
In general, was it this fun before you got hurt?
Did you view it that way?

Speaker 15 (01:13:39):
Lose? No, I wouldn't say. I wouldn't say I have
viewed it that way. I think what was the changing point?
Changing point? I'm not sure. I'm not sure there was.

Speaker 17 (01:13:50):
A a singular moment or of time.

Speaker 15 (01:13:56):
And it's just a reflection reflection a lot of.

Speaker 17 (01:14:02):
Things that I've done and been through in my career.
I think I've been through more than most and it's
certainly not easy on the brain or the body.

Speaker 15 (01:14:14):
So it's trying off. I'm doing it again.

Speaker 2 (01:14:18):
You talked so Joe Burrow.

Speaker 1 (01:14:20):
You just heard his comments there looking a little bit
despondent at the moment, and the type of injuries that
Joe Burrow has had could certainly change his mindset on
the game, could change his entire career outlook. Right knee
injury took him out the second half of his rookie season, then.

Speaker 2 (01:14:39):
During the Super Bowl.

Speaker 1 (01:14:40):
During the Super Bowl, picked up an mcl sprain, then
had to get his appendix removed, had the calf injury
at the start of trading camp the following season, hurt
his wrist at the end of the twenty twenty three campaign,
then into twenty twenty four he was an MVP candidate,
forty three touchdown passes, nearly five thousand passing yards, he

(01:15:05):
was the NFL Comeback Player of the Year. And then
a few weeks into the campaign in twenty twenty five,
after the Bengals started so well, turf toe required surgery
kept Joe Burrow out, likely going to keep the Bengals
out of the twenty twenty five playoffs. So you could
understand the toll that could take on a very promising
quarterback who is supposed to be in his prime at

(01:15:27):
the moment. Joe Burrow another quarterback to discuss This is
kind of the quarterback index section of the program. We
got two more quarterbacks to discuss here. One is Jaydon
Daniels from the Washington Commanders. It's been a weird year
for him. Picked up the hamstring injury in the loss
of the Dallas Cowboys called him to miss a couple

(01:15:48):
of weeks. When he returned in primetime against the Seattle Seahawks,
suffered a gruesome looking injury to his non throwing elbow
that held him out for another month. Daniels returned and
the Commander's thirty one tohering loss to the Minnesota Vikings
wasn't so sharp in the game before leaving with an injury.
Through the interception, Daniels is sprinting back trying to make

(01:16:11):
a tackle. He gets blocked lands awkwardly on that elbow. Now,
nothing too harmless looking about the way he fell on it.
He was wearing some protective covering on it. But the elbow,
the left elbow, was aggravated at that point. He came
out of the game in pain, came out of the tent,
spiked his helmet, sat down the rest of the game.

(01:16:32):
But it comes out today there's no structural setbacks for
Jade Daniels, which great news if you're a Washington fan
like myself, And then the story gets weird. Apparently Daniels
was cleared he could have gone back out there and
played in the Vikings game. I can understand the Commander's
choosing to sit him at that point. But now, after

(01:16:53):
what Adam Schefter says, our additional medical evaluations, the doctors
have advised that Daniels not on Sunday, and then he's
going to be reevaluated next week.

Speaker 2 (01:17:06):
So what's going on here?

Speaker 1 (01:17:08):
Is this a setback that he suffered in this Vikings
game that's separate from the initial dislocated elbow? Is this
a strategic choice just to kind of play it safely,
perhaps hope for a higher draft picks.

Speaker 2 (01:17:24):
There's some very.

Speaker 1 (01:17:26):
Odd and upsetting parts to this Jaydon Daniels situation if
you're a Commander's fan. Because the concern is if he
couldn't have finished the game, why was it cleared to
return to the game in the first place. Second off,
why was he cleared to re enter the game? Why
is dan Quinn saying he was available? But now this

(01:17:46):
story comes out that doctors have advised he's not going
to play this week. It's only year two for Jade Daniels, who,
despite some of the concerns coming out of college right
smaller quarterback, puts himself harm's way a lot with the
high scramble rate. Outside of an ACL injury that he
picked up at Arizona State, hasn't been having problems finishing

(01:18:11):
games last year. I believe he finished every game but
the one that he suffered a rib injury against Carolina
in the middle of last season. He came back, played
with a jacket on, got back to full health for
the playoffs, one of those you know vests, I should say,
not a jacket, but to protect the rib. But it's
not been the season that Jane Daniels and Washington would

(01:18:33):
have hoped for. And there's some odd conflicting stories out
there about this left elbow that might shut down Jane
Daniels for the rest of the season. Finally, back to
that Colts story you heard Philip Rivers in his introductory
press conference a second ago. Apparently the Colts had interest

(01:18:53):
in another quarterback that Longhorn fans know quite well. That's
Sam Ellinger, who started his career at Indianapolis made several
appearances preseason and regular season. He made some news in
the offseason, and Craig and I discussed this by signing
to Denver's practice squad instead of another team like in Indianapolis,
where he could have been the QB two, He's decided

(01:19:17):
to stay in Denver for his development. They've got Davis Webb,
a quarterbacks coach who's highly solid after and obviously Sean
Payton whose track record in developing quarterback speaks for itself.
Just look at what bo Nicks has been able to
do in just a couple of years in the league.
The Colts had interest in signing Sam Ellinger off of

(01:19:37):
Denver's practice squad, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, but
Ellinger again deciding to stay his debt in Denver. He said,
no thanks, I'm good where I am. Certainly a different
approach than what we see from a lot of quarterbacks
that might have been in a similar situation, and we'll

(01:19:59):
see if it works out for Ellinger. Certainly hoping for
the best for a lifetime Longhorn there in Sam Ellinger.
Coming up, we'll talk Dallas Cowboys. Current playoff predictors give
them a fifty four percent chance of making the playoffs
if they win out, because if Dallas wins out and
the Eagles drop two of their final four games, then

(01:20:22):
the Cowboys would win the NFC East. But if you
factory in all the game by game probabilities up to
the minute according to NFL's next Gen Stats, that puts
the Cowboys playoff odds at just eleven percent overall, goes
down to three percent if they drop this weekend's game
against Minnesota. We'll hear from Brian Schottenheimer and Jerry Jones

(01:20:42):
all the latest injury updates surrounding the Dallas Cowboys right
after this on Sports Radio AM thirty hundred Zone and
the free iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 2 (01:20:54):
Thank you on a Thursday afternoon.

Speaker 1 (01:20:56):
Right here on Sports Radio AM thirty hundred Zone, Jay
Kerman in for Craig Way, we do invite your texts
at eight one to five three zero texts the word
Texas followed by your question or your comment. You also
heard that iHeartRadio as a guaranteed human station. Speaking of
which Jamar Chase, when he heard Joe Burrow's comments that

(01:21:17):
we played for you in the last segment, got behind
the podium today and thought that Joe Burrow's comments were ai.
He said he didn't look like he's bummed to be
here to Jamar Chase, not the same person that he
sees every day. So that's certainly something to watch. You
hope that Joe Burrow is able to kind of rediscover

(01:21:38):
what made him so much fun to watch over the
last couple of years, and you certainly hope for the
best for him off the field as well, if he's
struggling with the type of personal issues that he described
in the press conference. All to the Dallas Cowboys, who
are trying to keep hope alive for a playoff push
right now, at six six and one, their best chance

(01:22:01):
of reaching the NFL postseason probably means passing the Philadelphia Eagles,
and those chances got a little bit more realistic on
Monday night when the LA Chargers knocked off the Eagles
by final score of twenty two to nineteen. Brian Schottenheimer,
when he talked to the reporters after practice yesterday, was asked,

(01:22:22):
first of all, was he cheering for the Chargers watching
the game.

Speaker 18 (01:22:26):
I actually did see the last couple of minutes of
the game, but I was watching, I wasn't cheering, And
we have to control we got to control. But when
the ball was intercepted, I was a little happy.

Speaker 15 (01:22:41):
Is that change anything?

Speaker 17 (01:22:42):
You know?

Speaker 15 (01:22:42):
Just I mean, I know, Jerry Town, we got to
go shot. Now.

Speaker 6 (01:22:44):
Does it give you all another extra punch that, hey,
this thing is real?

Speaker 15 (01:22:48):
We can make it out?

Speaker 3 (01:22:49):
Yeah, I mean I thought it was. I thought it
was real all long.

Speaker 6 (01:22:51):
Anyways, you know, you should never know in this business.

Speaker 18 (01:22:53):
I've been around too much to you know, try to
figure it all out and all the playoff predictors and
things like that. We're just focused on having a great
day to day. It's competition Wednesday, and we'll have the
pads on out there today and get back to running
around and striking each other a little bit.

Speaker 6 (01:23:08):
So that's why I'm looking forward to the most.

Speaker 1 (01:23:10):
As for the injury updates, we can't tell you that
CD Lamb was upgraded to a full practice participant today,
so keep that in mind as you hear him yesterday
discuss injury updates, but as well, an update on Treyvon Diggs.

Speaker 18 (01:23:23):
Well, first couple of things with guid and we'll see
how he moves around today. He's making progress, but we'll see.
He's got to get out there and do football. CD
is progressing nicely through the process the protocol. I think
he's got one or two more things he's got to
get done, but I feel good about that. And in
terms of Trayvon, I mean he's still in the ramp
up period.

Speaker 6 (01:23:43):
I think he does feel healthy.

Speaker 18 (01:23:45):
I know he wants to play, but at the end
of the day, it's you know, we have to do
what we think is in the best interest of not
just him but also the football team. And when you
miss time, there's a ramp up period is good not
just for your body, but for your mind and figuring
out some of the de and there's some new faces
in the huddle and things like that. So again, love

(01:24:05):
him as a player, but ultimately he's got to show
us he's ready to do everything the right way.

Speaker 1 (01:24:09):
And again, Drayvon Diggs still away from the Dallas Cowboys
at the moment, So Schottenheimer was asked after that, how
do you get your running game maybe back to the
efficient levels it was earlier in the season. It's been
tough sledding as of late for Javonte Williams.

Speaker 14 (01:24:26):
Yeah.

Speaker 18 (01:24:26):
Again, I think you know, the one thing we went
into the Detroit game about was wanting to win first
down time, and we certainly weren't able to do that.

Speaker 6 (01:24:32):
But the biggest thing is sustaining blocks.

Speaker 18 (01:24:34):
I think that's what we talked to the guys about today,
Like you know, actually our targeting, our identification of the
of the front and what we were trying to do
was good. We didn't sustain blocks very well and that's
where we need to be better. We need to strain
to finish and we're going to be challenged this week
with a defense led by Coach Flores that's very multiple

(01:24:54):
and they're going to do a lot of different things.
But the biggest thing I would say would be just
it's that last, the last push in the strain in
the finish of getting guys covered up a little bit
longer to let the backs be able to press the
hole and puncture the defense.

Speaker 15 (01:25:07):
John A Show with the Athletic from your Perspective.

Speaker 1 (01:25:10):
Brian Schottenheimer then asked about Kenneth Murray, who, like Cameron
Parker mentioned on the show earlier this week, has been
a target at times for opposing defenses, particularly in the
run game. What does Schottenheimer like about Murray that's keeping
him kind of in the rotation ahead of Logan Wilson,

(01:25:31):
who they also signed to the trade deadline from the Bengals,
and what could Wilson do to maybe earn more stabs.

Speaker 18 (01:25:37):
Yeah, so number one, when we added Logan, we were
just trying to get you know, we're adding depth, right,
getting better Cana And I love his physicality, man.

Speaker 3 (01:25:46):
I love the fact that he can run and hit.

Speaker 18 (01:25:47):
And we've talked a little bit at times about his
you know, his eye progression and seeing things like that.
Logan's been here a couple of weeks, and I think
both guys give us, you know, a chance to play
well and win.

Speaker 3 (01:25:58):
And again, you.

Speaker 18 (01:26:00):
Know, to the naked eye, you know, sometimes you look
at things and you're like, oh, it's that guy's falter,
it's this guy's falter. Oh that was Shoddy's problem or whatever,
And you know, that's what we sign up for. But
at the same time, it's not always what it appears
to be on film. And so what we need to
do from a defensive standpoint is get back to playing
the way that we were against Philadelphia Late Kansas City

(01:26:23):
for the most part throughout the game in Las Vegas.

Speaker 6 (01:26:25):
And that's not just about one guy.

Speaker 18 (01:26:27):
That's about all eleven guys doing right and communicating and
things like that, And I do like the competition that
we've created in that room.

Speaker 3 (01:26:35):
Though.

Speaker 1 (01:26:37):
What about Schottenheimer's reactions what we heard in the last
segment about Philip Rivers taking himself potentially out of the
Hall of Fame running for five years, but more importantly
taking himself out of retirement and potentially getting ready to
suit up for the first time since twenty twenty as
the starting quarterback for the Indianapolis Colt too, By the way,

(01:26:59):
are kind of a must win situation themselves now on
the outside looking into the playoff picture.

Speaker 2 (01:27:04):
Take it on the Seattle Seahawks.

Speaker 6 (01:27:06):
Man, he must hate coaching, you know, he must.

Speaker 18 (01:27:09):
I don't even know how they did. I'm sure they
did well, but I'm just happy for him. I mean,
he loves football, man, he does. And you know, his
ability to see a football field was unique and special.
And I know one thing, he can get out of
his hand pretty quick. So he might not be able
to move. He really never could move. You'd probably hear that,
but he never really could move. But boy, he'd get

(01:27:30):
that ball his hand fast.

Speaker 6 (01:27:31):
So I'm sure he hasn't hasn't lost his quick release.

Speaker 1 (01:27:34):
Finally, how important is it for the Cowboys to finish
the season well regardless of the playoff possibilities, which are
again just eleven percent right now. According to NFL's next
Gen Stats, it's the very real possibility the Cowboys win
out or go three to one over their last four
games and then still miss the playoffs. They've lost games
to both the Panthers and the Lions, who are ahead

(01:27:57):
of them in the playoff race, as well as the
hold the last spot right now, the third wildcard to
the NFC. So how important is a good finish regardless
of what happens in the postseason.

Speaker 6 (01:28:08):
I think it's always important. I think, you know, we
actually talked for the first time.

Speaker 18 (01:28:11):
You know, I always talk about, you know, can't win
the game the first quarter, second, third, and fourth. We
talked a little bit about this, and we talked about
heading into this fourth quarter.

Speaker 6 (01:28:19):
You know, let's look at the season in that way.

Speaker 18 (01:28:21):
And I think we were one, two and one in
the first quarter, we were two and three in the second,
and then now in the third quarter, we're three and one.

Speaker 3 (01:28:27):
What's that mean?

Speaker 18 (01:28:28):
Means we're playing better, means we're playing more consistent, means
we're doing things at a at a higher level, a
higher standard. But again, Minnesota is our focus. Minnesota is
my focus. But you know, like I said, at the
end of the day, we're going to be judged on
wins and losses. And so let's start by getting first
one in the fourth quarter against Minnesota.

Speaker 1 (01:28:48):
That one Sunday night, seven twenty central on NBC and
Pete Cock right up the road at at and T Stadium,
Cowboys a five and a half point favorite for the
Minnesota Vikings, who have still a very outside playoff shot.
They beat Washington thirty one nothing last week, but as
a Washington fan, I'll tell you that does not mean

(01:29:08):
what it did a season ago, or even a couple
of months ago. Tonight's game, by the way, Atlanta at
Tampa Bay, and if you're a Cowboys fan, supposed to
be rooting for a Tampa Bay Buccaneers loss there. The
Bucks currently lead the NFC South. It's kind of turned
into a two team race there between the Bucks and
the Carolina Panthers, who are both seven and six, and

(01:29:30):
Tampa owns the tiebreaker as it stands currently. With the win,
the Bucks can boost their playoff odds up to seventy
percent with a loss, though certainly would swing things in
Carolina's favor if they could take care of business against
New Orleans and take over the driver's seat in the
NFC South. There Every Tuesday, Jerry Jones talks with our
friends up at one oh five to three the fan

(01:29:51):
in Dallas, and he was asked about the Cowboys playoff, Pat,
how does he view it now after the Chargers took
out the Eagles and maybe opened the door from a
sliver to some daylight where the Cowboys could potentially surprise
some folks.

Speaker 14 (01:30:06):
Well, again, I know it's cliche, but we've got to
concentrate on the Chargers, I mean on the Minnesota Vikings
this weekend, and that's a big game for us. But boy,
you say that, boy, you need to stay in there.
Every play ever played is meaningful right at this particular time,

(01:30:26):
and we sure got a shot at this thing.

Speaker 1 (01:30:29):
Next, Jerry Jones was asked about the culture Brian Schottenheimer
is building. And this comes amidst questions right now about
the Philadelphia Eagles. Are they sort of fracturing right now
given the way they've played over the last three weeks. Remember,
the Eagles haven't won in three weeks four. If you
count the by they lost after leading twenty one to

(01:30:50):
nothing in Dallas, that win would have taken them to
nine and two. Instead, they're sitting there at eight and five.
Similar story to what the Colts are going through, minus
of course, the quarterback injuries. So Jerry Jones was asked
to comment on the culture Brian Schottenheimer is building, I
guess in the context of finishing this season strong, whereas the.

Speaker 2 (01:31:09):
Eagles might be sliding a bit here down the stretch.

Speaker 14 (01:31:12):
Yes, it's very legitimate, and unfortunately, we've had really touch
points of things that bring, if you will, people together,
in this case our team, and certainly we've had that
this year, and then we've really, in my mind, had

(01:31:33):
some have I come together as a team, This group
that we've got on the field, that was disappointing the
other night defensively because I thought we would do better.
We can do better. But you know, the main thing
is that the nature of the game, it's such a

(01:31:56):
fine line out there between these teams, the emotional aspect
of the thing, or if you will, you get on
a roll type thing that's real and you don't have
and it comes down so close, especially at this time
of the year, and we've learned that we need to

(01:32:17):
be physical, we need to have that running game needs
to be more effective than it was the other night
against the Lions, because you've got to be able to
keep that defense honest and that does thing.

Speaker 1 (01:32:31):
Finally, Jerry Jones was asked given the fact that the
Cowboys have an extra four days, a ten day break
between games, after they played about four times in less
than twenty days leading into the Thanksgiving matchup with the
Chiefs and then of course Thursday night football to follow
against the Lions, so we could go last night. The

(01:32:53):
Cowboys fell forty four to thirty two in that one.
So what did the Cowboys do in terms of self
scouting during the ten day break kind of the last
extended break they'll get until the offseason.

Speaker 14 (01:33:08):
Well, I think we've got to look for ways to
continue to have a concentration of getting the ball out constantly,
trying to work to get turnovers on defense, and on
the other hand, we've got to tighten up.

Speaker 6 (01:33:24):
On the ball on some.

Speaker 14 (01:33:27):
Different ways that we're just focus on hanging on to
that ball. We've got some good players that have turned
that ball over a few times, and that can change
by just focusing on that. Believe you me, that's where
it is. We You know, we've got things we're doing well,

(01:33:49):
but we need to be more consistent. That's what you
hear all the time. But I think we're headed in
the right direction with our injuries, and that's good. There's
the time of year when you want to have your
have as good of your talent on the field, and
I think we're there for this next run, and.

Speaker 1 (01:34:11):
The Cowboys hope that run starts with a win over Minnesota.
On Sunday night, that's Jerry Jones and Brian Schottenheimer with
their thoughts on the Dallas Cowboys outlook.

Speaker 2 (01:34:21):
Coming up, we'll tell you.

Speaker 1 (01:34:22):
About some free agent signings in Major League Baseball Winter
meetings wrapped up yesterday. We are keeping an eye on
any news to come out of an oar Berth. You're
just now joining us leaving work on this Thursday afternoon.
Shar Own Moore is still in custody at the moment.
We've been tracking that story all day long. The Wolverines
head coach, Texas de Citrus Bowl opponent and what the
coaching search looks like. We'll refresh that a little bit

(01:34:46):
before the end of the show, but up next to
MLB news and notes right here on Sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred Zone and the iHeartRadio app. Okay, some MLB

(01:35:11):
news coming out of Winter meetings. Some players finding new homes,
including Robert Suarez, who was the seen by many as
the top reliever left on the market after it would
signed with the Dodgers, Kyle Finnegan signed with the Tigers
re signed, I should say, Robert Suarez is heading to Atlanta.

(01:35:34):
The thirty five year old closer opted out of a
two year, sixteen million dollar deal to sign a three year,
forty five million dollar deal with the Atlanta Braves. That
leaves Pete Fairbanks the main headline late inning reliever left

(01:35:58):
on the board in the Winter meetings. We were told
by our MLB insider Gene Watson to expect these arms
to make some major money due to the fact that
every team needs pitching at the moment, but there's not
necessarily a lot of it out there to be had.
Fairbanks is actually four years younger than Suarez, but has

(01:36:19):
a bit more of an injury history.

Speaker 2 (01:36:21):
We'll see where he goes next.

Speaker 1 (01:36:23):
We were reading some stories on MLB dot Com Toronto
has been in on both of these first couple relievers
that have signed has missed out. Expect them to be
in on Pete Fairbanks as well other names to watch
in the starting pitching market from Valdez Hell, don't expect
him to sign anytime soon. ESPN reports that his market
is still developing and he won't be signing for a

(01:36:45):
little bit while, oh for a little while longer. Trek Scooble,
the back to back cy Young winner, is quote unquote
not untouchable. According to Tiger's President of baseball Operation, Scott Harris,
he says, I don't believe in untouchable players at any level.
Schooble the unquestioned best starting pitcher in baseball over the

(01:37:05):
last couple of years, thirty one to ten leads league
and strikeouts whip second in Era, all while being just
about as durable as anybody thirty three hundred and eighty
seven innings pitch that's second in baseball over the last
two seasons. The Tigers have gone to the Alds back
to back years, hoping to have their hopes dashed.

Speaker 2 (01:37:25):
In Game five.

Speaker 1 (01:37:26):
We'll see if they decide to trade Trek Scooble, which
would make sense if they don't feel as though they
can afford him when he hits the open market a
year from now. Pete Alonzo is leaving New York. The
Mets have lost a couple of big names ed when
Diaz went to the Dodgers. Pete Alonzo is signing with
the Baltimore Orioles five years, one hundred and fifty five

(01:37:47):
million dollars. Alonso, one of the best first basemen and
one of the best home run hitters in Mets history,
taking his talents a couple of hours south to Oriel
Park at Camden Yards, where he'll be a cornerstone and
a veteran piece and otherwise pretty young Orioles lineup that
hopes for much better results in twenty twenty five. As

(01:38:10):
for some of the other big hitters on the market,
Kyle Tucker is one seeing some major attention. There's talk
that the Dodgers are pursuing him to add to what
is already just an outstanding lineup. Outfield, one of the
last perceived weaknesses for the Dodgers, and that's relative to

(01:38:31):
their own standards. And the Athletic is reporting that while
the Dodgers are going after Kyle Tucker. They're not going
to give them a long term deal. They're more likely
to go about three or four years. If they do
offer Kyle Tucker a deal, Cody Bellinger might see the
same type of offer, and we'll see if he returns
to join the back to back champs in their pursuit

(01:38:51):
of the first three peat in twenty five years since
the New York Yankees did it. As for the Astros
and the Rangers, the Astros have been trying to trade
Christian Walker. According to the Athletic, they signed him to
play first base in twenty twenty five got some mixed results.
It wasn't necessarily a season where Walker was at one
hundred percent health. He's owed twenty million dollars in both

(01:39:13):
twenty twenty six and twenty seven. Hit twenty seven homers
last year, but he didn't get on base very well
two ninety seven on base percentage. His defense took a
dip from what we saw in Arizona, and with the
Astros expected to play Jordaan Alfarez at DH moving forward
out for us another guy who was banged up this season,
the Astros are trying to figure out, Okay, how do

(01:39:36):
we get both Carlos Korea and Eastock parades in the lineup.
So if you trade Christian Walker, that opens up first
base for parades, and so that's why the Athletic is
reporting that the Astros are trying to unload Walker, but
they're not seeing a lot of interest, thanks in large
part to those twenty million dollars each he would be

(01:39:57):
owed in twenty twenty six and twenty seven, remember the
thirty five years old. Other Astros news out of the
winter meetings, the Astros are still interested in starting pitching,
and obviously from ber Valdez is on the open market.
Hunter Brown says he doesn't want to be traded, but
we'll see if the Astros decide to do that in

(01:40:17):
favor of some depth as they continue to try and retool.

Speaker 2 (01:40:23):
Coming into twenty twenty six, the.

Speaker 1 (01:40:25):
Rangers have a couple of forty man roster spots to fill,
including a catcher. The only Rangers catcher on the roster
is Kyle Heegashioka. JC real Muto is kind of the
big catching name still on the market. The Phillies have
made an offer after re signing Kyle Schwarber that might
increase the likelihood that real Muto can kind of run

(01:40:46):
it back in Philadelphia. We'll see if if that's the case,
we'll see if the Oakland well, sorry, I knew that
was gonna happen at some point. The A's, who will
be playing in Sacramento again, if we'll see if they
extend their young catcher, Shae Langle. They're trying to extend
a lot of different hitters at this winter meetings, in
these off season talks, so we'll see what the catching

(01:41:07):
situation looks like for the Rangers. As for Corey Seeger,
they always get trade offers. They're always getting calls about
Corey Sieger. But the Rangers general manager said that the
reality is we're not motivated to move Corey Seger. We're
trying to win a championship in twenty twenty six. In
order to do that would eat great players. Teams are

(01:41:29):
doing their due diligence. This is just normal operating procedure.
Those are the words of President of Baseball Operations Chris Young.
So don't expect Corey Seger to be dealt anytime soon.
Of course, the Ranger is not going to be managed
by Skip Schumacher traded Marcus Semion for Brandon Nimmo a
little bit earlier in the off season. Brandon Nimo going

(01:41:52):
to be a part of the outfield, so Seeger maybe
a priority to keep now on the infield with Semion
headed for the big So those are a couple of
updates from MLB's winter meetings. Lots of movements still to
come in all likelihood in the coming days. We're going
to wrap up the show and tell you who Joel
Klatt says might fill the Michigan vacancy left by Sherwan

Moore as we wind things down for the day on

The Brothers Ortiz

The Brothers Ortiz

The Brothers Ortiz is the story of two brothers–both successful, but in very different ways. Gabe Ortiz becomes a third-highest ranking officer in all of Texas while his younger brother Larry climbs the ranks in Puro Tango Blast, a notorious Texas Prison gang. Gabe doesn’t know all the details of his brother’s nefarious dealings, and he’s made a point not to ask, to protect their relationship. But when Larry is murdered during a home invasion in a rented beach house, Gabe has no choice but to look into what happened that night. To solve Larry’s murder, Gabe, and the whole Ortiz family, must ask each other tough questions.
