Speaker 1 (00:16):
It's Wednesday on the Craig Ways Show. Jake Herman in
for the Hall of Famer today. We'll touch base with
Craig a little later on in the show as he
prepares to call Texas women's basketball six point thirty tip
off tonight in Edinburgh against UTRGV. We've got lots to discuss,
the latest on the Longhorn transfer portal prospects, the latest

(00:40):
on the winter meetings in Major League Baseball, plus news
from around the rest of the college football world and
the NFL. We're with you from two to five here
this afternoon on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
And if you listen to this program regularly, you know
that Wednesdays they mean a couple of things. Number One,

(01:01):
they mean that it is a yacht rock Wednesday, and
we'll hear some of the yacht rock cuts throughout the
show today. Number Two, it means that we usually react
to the college football playoff rankings that come out every
Tuesday night. Who knows how much longer we'll have that
tradition of college football rankings, given the way things are headed,

(01:22):
given Notre dames grievances against the committee who flipped them
with Miami at the last second. But if you thought
that the lack of a college football ranking show means
that we don't have drama to discuss in the world
of college football on a Wednesday afternoon, but you'd be mistaken,
because college football, as we know, is a soap opera

(01:44):
that just keeps on giving and giving. We talked a
little bit about Notre Dame's athletic director Pete Bavaqua and
his comments towards the ACC, specifically towards Commissioner Jim Phillips
yesterday on the show. We've got some new detail and
new reactions, new pettiness to share today. First off, let's

(02:08):
hear what Pete Bivaqua said.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
This was.

Speaker 1 (02:10):
This was yesterday afternoon, I believe while this show was airing,
his comments on the relationship with the ACC and some
of the damage that he felt was done with the
ACC social media campaign that was pro Miami anti Notre
Dame in the lead up to the final college football
playoff reveal.

Speaker 3 (02:30):
And then we'll follow up with some new details on this.

Speaker 4 (02:34):
And why would you attack an unbelievably important business partner
of yours in football and a member of your conference
in twenty four other sports. I'm one person I don't.

Speaker 2 (02:47):
See the logic in that.

Speaker 4 (02:49):
I know other leaders at the university didn't see the
logic in that. And the ACC is important to us,
and you know we're important to the ACC. And think
about football for a minute. You know tho's these teams
want to play us in football. You know interesting stat
since twenty fourteen when we started our football relationship with
the ACC, if you look at stadiums, they sell out.

(03:10):
ACC game sellout roughly twenty three percent of the time.
When Notre Dame goes to an ACC site, it's ninety
percent of the time. When you think about ratings for
ACC football games when they play Notre Dame, there's a
tremendous lift. I don't understand why you would go on
a social media campaign to attack an important partner. Now, well,
who's some of our important partners in the football space, NBC.

(03:34):
We wouldn't do that to NBC.

Speaker 2 (03:36):
Now.

Speaker 4 (03:36):
I understand they have to stand up for their teams
in football. We just think there's other ways to do
it and it has created damage. I mean, I'm not
going to shy away from that.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
Remember Pete Pavakua formerly was in charge over at NBC Sports.
So here's the here's the new kicker that came out today,
Matt Fortuna reporting, have you ever hit reply all by accident?
Have you ever accidentally texted somebody? I'm not talking about
an accidental text on purpose. I think that's what That's

(04:10):
what Kurby Your Enthusiasm had a whole episode on no.

Speaker 3 (04:14):
This was apparently something the ACC.

Speaker 1 (04:18):
Did in their emails and internal communications to their schools
promoting Miami talking about Notre Dame in the lead up
to the College Football Playoff.

Speaker 3 (04:29):
Matt Fortuna reports that the.

Speaker 1 (04:31):
Acc accidentally copied Notre Dame on the conference wide emails
talking about here's our messaging on this, here's why the
Heads Ahead should knock Notre Dame out. So that apparently
has rubbed Notre Dame the wrong way and apparently had
an impact in Notre Dame's eyes on the.

Speaker 3 (04:53):
Committee's final decision.

Speaker 1 (04:54):
Of course, we'll never know if that was really what happened,
but that's what kicked off this kind of media tour
for Notre Dame in the last few days since the
College Football Playoff rankings came out, and it's rubbed some
folks the wrong way, including Big Twelve commissioner brent Yormark,
who had this response to Pete Pavaqua's comments.

Speaker 3 (05:16):
This was also yesterday afternoon.

Speaker 5 (05:19):
I will say this, and I'm a little lot spoken
about it. I don't like how Notre Dame's reacted to it. So, okay,
I think Pete's his behavior has been egregious. It's been
egregious going after Jim Phillips. When they saved Notre Dame
during COVID, we all knew and it was very transparent.
Hunter was very transparent about it. The chair that as

(05:43):
Notre Dame in Miami got closer together head to head
would be a factor.

Speaker 6 (05:47):
Okay, BYU lost it, came.

Speaker 5 (05:50):
Closer together head to head and made a difference in
that decision. So I think he is totally out of
bounds in his approach. And he was in the room
I tell him the same thing. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
That's Big twelve Commissioner Brent yor Mark, who likely feels
as though right it's his job to advocate for BYU,
a team who was left out at eleven and two
overall eleven and one in the regular season. Of course,
they had the two somewhat lopsided losses to Texas Tech
and their best win besides that Utah right in the

(06:23):
similar tier of Notre Dame's best win this season. USC
not trying to relitigate BYU, but that's brent yor Mark
who feels as though Pete Bovaqua's comments are going a
little bit too far. And in the backdrop of that,
this memorandum of understanding that's the official term for the
agreement I brought up on the show yesterday made by

(06:43):
Notre Dame with the committee that if they finish in
the top twelve next year and the playoff doesn't expand,
they're in as if they want a conference, and if
the playoff were to expand to fourteen teams, Notre Dame
would be in in.

Speaker 3 (06:58):
The top thirteen. Why is that important?

Speaker 1 (07:00):
Well, Notre Dame's schedule next year is even lighter than
this season schedule was. They'll play Miami and USC again,
no Texas A and m On Notre Dame's twenty twenty
six schedule, only three true road games for the Fighting Irish,
two at neutral site, so that's five games away from
South Bend. Only one will be against a team that

(07:22):
was Bowl eligible this year, and that team is Navy
so Notre Dame has a pretty good agreement working for
them moving forward, and it's against that backdrop that I
think you're seeing some backlash from the rest of the
college football world. We'll get to ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips's
response to Notre Dame's statements, and there's a little more

(07:46):
to this story too, including something that will be in
our Inconceivable file a little bit later this hour when
it comes to the Fighting Irish and they're at times
petty response of the college football playoff snub. But in
a moment, we're going to visit with Evan v the
inside Texas to talk about what these next couple weeks

(08:09):
look like for the Longhorns. We've already seen some players
enter the transfer portal, as we discussed yesterday. We'll preview
a little bit of what that process will look like
for Texas with Evan next. As I mentioned, we'll talk
to Craig Way next hour as he is down in
the Rio Grand Valley with the number two ranked Texas
women's basketball team.

Speaker 3 (08:30):
They're in action tonight right here at six point thirty
on a.

Speaker 1 (08:33):
Thirteen hundred zone covered starts at six fifteen and then
later Cameron Parker will join the show. We'll talk college football,
Dallas Cowboys and Philip Rivers forty four year old Philip
Rivers coming back to quarterback the Indianapolis Colts, potentially even
as early as this week. That's coming up on the
Craig Way Show right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen

(08:55):
hundred of the Zone. Back on a yacht Rock Wednesday
on AM thirteen hundred to Zone. Ja Grumman in for
Craig today and excited to visit with our good friend
from inside Texas, Evan vf. That have been what a
weird couple of weeks coming up for Texas. Gonna be

(09:16):
sitting at home getting ready for the Citrus Bowl, while
the two arch rivals the Longhorns beat this season are
going to host playoff games. How would you describe kind
of the mood around the program right now?

Speaker 3 (09:27):
It's it's kind of odd.

Speaker 2 (09:29):
Yeah, I think.

Speaker 7 (09:30):
Everyone's just trying to get past these these two weeks
and for many fans probably hopefully just one Friday Saturday
see Alabama and Miami gets some wins.

Speaker 8 (09:38):
But you know, Texas is kind of on their own
schedule now.

Speaker 7 (09:41):
It's not much less about this twenty twenty five season,
and much more about how can we prepare ourselves to
this twenty to twenty six offseason and of course championship run.

Speaker 1 (09:48):
For that next year before we turn the page on
this once and for all, because I know some of
our listeners might be sick of it. Did the committee
ultimately get Texas is ranking right not just outside the feet,
but behind Notre Dame and BYU while staying ahead of Vanderbilt.

Speaker 8 (10:05):
You know, I have my I'm not a big fan
of Notre Dames resume this year.

Speaker 7 (10:10):
Honestly, I've made that pretty public, and I do see
their argument that ten and zero in their last ten
and being probably the best true team of that kind
of outside the top eight group.

Speaker 2 (10:19):
But you know what it is, what it is.

Speaker 7 (10:21):
You lost your head to head game, You lost two
of your three games against kind of real competition this year.
I think I saw, just by power ratings, Notre Dame's
fourth toughest matchup was against Arkansas, who is, as we
all know, not quite not quite a competitive team in
the SEC. So I personally think that Texas resume was
better than Notre Dame. I understand why they're behind them,
and YU I'm just glad they got it right. It
should have been Miami the whole time. It's really weird

(10:43):
that it took into the last week for them to
honor the head to head, But you know, I have
a feel in the ACC kind of pushed them a
little bit too to make that the case, and I
do think we got the correct twelve at the end
of the day.

Speaker 1 (10:53):
We started the show talking a little bit about Notre
Dames back and forth with the ACC. Jim Phillips this
morning call for playoff expansion and getting rid of the
weekly ranking shows, among other changes like fixing tie breakers.
Is expansion something that you support? It feels like a
train that's coming our way whether we like it or not.

Speaker 7 (11:13):
Yeah, I do think it's gonna be sixteen pretty soon,
and I'm not really for that. I think you're already
seeing that there aren't really sixteen teams that are truly
competitive for this, and it's just going to have more
of these autobid problems and more teams are gonna feel
like they're getting left out.

Speaker 2 (11:28):
Even though the end of the day, if.

Speaker 9 (11:29):
You're the sixteenth best team in the nation, should you
really be competing for a national championship. I've been saying
a lot of it's a great year for four, it's
a great year for sixteen, a terrible year for twelve
teams in twenty twenty five. But once it's twenty twenty six,
whos to say it's not a great year for eight
teams or it's a great year for twenty four or whatever.
It's just gonna be year by year depending, which is
why it's going to be so hard to actually get
this right. I do think the twelve team as we

(11:50):
have it is flawed. I like twelve teams.

Speaker 7 (11:52):
I think if you can get the four conference champions
who really deserve to get in, and then you have
your next eight, I really do think that's the way
to do it. And don't I don't agree with you know,
both Tulane and JMU getting in this year. I think
clearly there Dame would have been a better team to
actually go and be competitive this week. But you saw
Power four teams get crushed last year. It's not just
what the G five teams are. There's just gonna be

(12:14):
five teams, five or six teams every year that are
definitely ahead of the rest. And that's not gonna change
whether it's sixteen twenty four to twelve or four when
those teams are gonna left out.

Speaker 1 (12:23):
Yeah, we're all bracing I think for some overreactions that
will come in the next couple of months. We're talking
with Evan vit the vinside Texas. You can follow him
on x at Evan vef Let's let's turn the page
to the Citrus Bowl. From what you've heard being around
this program, besides winning the game against Michigan, who the
Longhorns saw last year, we'll see again two years from now,

(12:43):
are there specific priorities you think this team has coming
into the game, and are there specific players or positions
that you're maybe paying extra attention to.

Speaker 7 (12:53):
I mean, Sarkisian said it out loud in as press conference.
This is the kind of game where you can get
your young guys involved. And though I don't think he
specifically said what positions, I think the two that stand
out are State in the secondary and at running back.
You know, first, on the defensive side of the ball,
you're just losing so much. I think they're hopeful they
can get Giolanie McDonald back for a strong an al
offer in a senior year. Is kind of the star
of the secondary. But even so, you're losing Malik Muhammad

(13:16):
most likely to the draft. You're losing Michael taff Jalen
Gilbot is veteran presence. You've got a lot of guys
you like, But you know, do we really know what
Kobe Black is heading into next year? Had one really
noticely bad game, had no one really noticed a good game?
What's the middle for Black? And Jonah Williams is another
guy like that. Saber Philsone's another guy like that.

Speaker 2 (13:33):
In the secondary. They need to know where they need
to portal.

Speaker 7 (13:36):
Really, if that's at star, if that's for another cornerback,
that's at safety, and then at running back. You need
to see what you have in Clark and Simon, because
we already know that Gibson's gone.

Speaker 8 (13:46):
We already know that backs there's gone. He hit the
world really early on in this process.

Speaker 7 (13:49):
If either if Quintrillion Weiser's back or if he's not,
he should not be taking lead carries in this game
because A got to preserve his body for the offseason,
and B you have to know what you've got Clark
and Sigmon, if they can run an outside zone concept
or if they can hit the right gap in a
real game against real competition, because even with Michigan's defensive
line having some probably some opt outs, this is still

(14:10):
Michigan d D Lineman.

Speaker 8 (14:12):
This is really high level play.

Speaker 7 (14:13):
So we need to see if Clark and Simon are
actually guys that you can rely on to, even.

Speaker 8 (14:17):
If they're being the fourth backs next year.

Speaker 7 (14:19):
They need to be guys that you can rely on
as a roster spot instead of Hey, let's go get
two portal running backs instead and say we can use you,
we can do what you've got elsewhere.

Speaker 1 (14:29):
Let's stick with the running back theme, because, like you
touched on CJ. Bax Or hit, the portal running backs
coach Chad Scott was relieved of his duties yesterday after
just one year in the role. So that room, whether
it's the personnel or the coaches, it's all gonna look
entirely different next year. And you are a piece this
morning talking about the top transfer running backs from a

(14:49):
year ago and how they kind of fared in twenty
twenty five. What did you notice there that Texas can
take note of as they try to fill out this
running back room next year.

Speaker 7 (15:00):
The big takeaway from that, I think two things come
out of it. Is that G five can get into
the SEC SEC and succeed. You look at Fluff Bothwell,
who played for not a great Mississippi State team but
turn into their lead back even with some injuries. Amon
Hardy is the obvious one. He should have gone to
a team higher caliber than Missouri. He's a fantastic back.
It's gonna be the first one take and one of
the top two in the twenty twenty seven NFL Draft.

Speaker 8 (15:21):
It also showed that injuries still can occur, even to
these transfer guys.

Speaker 2 (15:25):
You know this.

Speaker 7 (15:26):
This happened with Minnesota. Their number two guy, DJ Turner
comes in is hurt by the third week. Talk about
Quentin Joyner, a Texas tech who was hurt for the season.
Jayden Ott came in with injury concerns and really did
not work out for Oklahoma. So it's a double edged sword.
It's hey, this really works. If you saw in the
twenty twenty four class as well, with Woody Marx and
Trevor Etn and puishean jud Kitson, we already knew it

(15:46):
was a star. You're also seeing that these guys are
also volatile, which is maybe an argument to get one
main guy and then also a secondary guy just in
case you need more depth, because we know for sure
the last two seasons Texas has struggled with injuries in.

Speaker 8 (15:58):
That room and has needed more depth no matter who
it came from.

Speaker 1 (16:01):
Are there other positions you see Texas attacking that folks
aren't talking about as much as the running backs and
maybe like the dbs you mentioned, Yeah.

Speaker 8 (16:12):
I mean offensive line is when people know what's going
to happen.

Speaker 7 (16:15):
I think they're gonna be a little surprised at how
Texas approaches the front seven because they're a little light
on the numbers of young players that they would like
to get in. They brought in twelve over the last
two classes, and the classes before that were also pretty light.
They probably would rather be at fifteen when it comes
to these kind of longer term guys. You just saw
Melboyn Hills hit the portal. I don't think linebackers are
gonna hit the portal, and probably not in the edges.

(16:36):
But either way, those are light position groups, so I
think you're gonna see them take two defensive tackles, one
kind of true nose mercenary, come in for one year
and hope to get for the NFL like Cole Bravard
or Bill Norton before him.

Speaker 2 (16:48):
But then also maybe.

Speaker 7 (16:49):
A long term project to kind of take over the
spot that was lost in recruiting this year when they
lost two of their commits.

Speaker 8 (16:54):
Right before National Signing Day. Same with edge.

Speaker 7 (16:57):
Do they have the successor the Colin Simmons on the
rosters new made Zulu, but he's maybe more of a
hybrid guy than a true buck ed rusher. And then
they definitely need help at linebacker, just numbers, live bodies,
even if Brad Spence moves into that trade war role.
Maybe another guy who's got some experience apart from Tiankie
Smith in the m.

Speaker 1 (17:13):
Foul Talking with Evan vf from Inside Texas, you covered
this too, these guys that Texas finds in the portal
in hopes of getting maybe a two year run out
of a two year return. Is that an edge that
you think Sark and this staff have found and is
that something you think they'll try and exploit again.

Speaker 2 (17:32):
Yeah, he's a little ahead of the curve.

Speaker 7 (17:33):
I used I use the term mercenary in that last
little spield because that's what these guys are a lot
of the times in college football, it's hey, we're gonna
pay you money to play for our team for one year.
Doesn't really matter that much about the culture fit, doesn't
really matter how much you're a teammate or anything.

Speaker 2 (17:48):
This is a business transaction. You're gonna get a better
chance to go to the league.

Speaker 7 (17:51):
We're gonna get a better player at your position. But
Cirkesian of his, I think seven top transfers which they
went really like. It was specialist, it was some d
linemen and then a lot of these multi year guys.
Now I think they thought Jack Andrews would be in
the NFL. But if he comes back, that's the upside
of having a guy with upside or with extra eligibility.
You then have your starting tie to end next year.
Mm Mosley is going to start for them next year.

(18:12):
Brad Spence is going to be a key player. Hiro
Kanu if he comes back and will be their best
defensive lineman. It's a really good way to approach your portal.
What you're saying, we can still kind of ingrain them
into our culture and make them these players that are
actually important parts of our long term development. But they
weren't recruited by us, whether it be because Hey, they
weren't quite the athlete out of high school that you're
looking for.

Speaker 8 (18:31):
What they ended up making up for the production.

Speaker 7 (18:33):
College, or they picked another school we did like them,
which is what happened with Brad Spence. If they want
to come here later, they can do that still and
have someone else developed them. We take the final steps
to make them the true stars. So I think that's
what's going to happen in the front seven. I think
it's gonna happen at running back, an offensive line. We'll
see about receiver. Receiver might be one where if they
take a portal guy, it's just hey, you're here for
one year. We need you to run deep routes and

(18:54):
then you can go to the NFL or return punts
whatever it be. As well as Ryan Niblets around no
one or no one else's.

Speaker 3 (18:59):
Return, gonna say the idea.

Speaker 1 (19:02):
So this is something different in this off season of
college football. No more spring transfer window.

Speaker 10 (19:09):
Now.

Speaker 1 (19:09):
I know that rules are often bent off and taken
as suggestions depending on who you ask. Is this going
to change? Well, what is this going to change for
Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns. The fact that it's just
the one transfer window.

Speaker 7 (19:23):
I think it generally means that you need to cover
up every hole you can possibly think of. And when
I think of that, I think a backup quarterback. Like
this is where instead of waiting for the spring, you
got to just go and get one of these g
five guys who started and probably won't be a little
started a power for school. But what's a chance like
Matthew Caldwell did, toll on some interesting tape and go.

Speaker 2 (19:43):
Play for a championship.

Speaker 7 (19:45):
It just means that these teams are no longer going
to go, hey, we can maybe get away with seeing
some players in the spring practice and then if we
need to address that position, like with Emmitt Moseley and
Jack Henry's last year for Texas, they need to.

Speaker 2 (19:56):
Just get these guys up front.

Speaker 7 (19:57):
And I think it makes the process a little It's
more manageable for these coaches. They don't have to think
in a two window phase the schedule is still completely
messed up. This is somewhat of a step in the
right direction just to have one set of a transfer
portal cycle and then if you're on your team, you're
on your team for the rest of the year unless
you want to transfer next offseason and cut and save
your eligibility. But it just makes things more simple, and

(20:19):
I do think it means that coaches need to say, hey,
we have to take a player here eventually. Let's do
this right now instead of waiting it out in the spring.

Speaker 2 (20:26):
If maybe we don't have to pay.

Speaker 1 (20:27):
A Guy's going to be fascinating to see how the
Longhorns approach the portal. Talking with Evan veiif from inside
Texas the schedule release for the SEC tomorrow night and Texas,
if you just look down the line at the opponents
they have, you got to go to Death Valley against
Lane Kiffin's LSU Tigers.

Speaker 3 (20:45):
It's one of the tougher schedules.

Speaker 1 (20:46):
If you go off of twenty twenty five results of
any team in the conference. What kind of draw that
would be favorable or unfavorable?

Speaker 3 (20:56):
Is Texas looking out for tomorrow?

Speaker 7 (20:59):
Oh question, I think you're hoping that LSU games pretty
early on in the season.

Speaker 2 (21:04):
Can we get that?

Speaker 7 (21:05):
Can we get that out of the way, you know,
do Ohio State get your out of conference games and
then either LSU or one of the easier games and
then LSU.

Speaker 2 (21:14):
Just because you're talking about Lane.

Speaker 7 (21:15):
Kiff, and getting ingrained to his teams, and you want
to get ahead of that. If you're playing him in
your last week, he's probably got his team where he
wants it to be at. But it's gonna be a
transfer heavy squad. It's gonna be a new coaching staff,
new culture there. I think you want to be ahead
of that. I will say one benefit for this Texas
team is they don't play Alabama and Georgia. Now you
do go have to go to Death Value. You do
have to go to an Eland, which are just no

(21:37):
matter how good these teams are, that is a hard
thing to do. They at least are dodging the two
presumed top teams in the in the conference. Next year
you're getting LSU. But if there's ever gonna be a
time you can bet LSU and Death Value, it's gonna
be Lane Kiffin's first year and not his third year
in the program. Oleness is not gonna be the same
program it was. It's the first year of John Summer
all of Florida. So as much as it's tough to

(22:00):
look at those away games, and I think the way
is what's really hard about the schedule because you're also
going into congsation. If you can get the proper schedulings
where you're catching LSU early in the year when they
might be a little bit underdeveloped, and you're you're getting
Tennessee in an optimal post by week or post Arkansas whatever,
that's where this schedule can actually go into Texas is
favoring you. Go, man, if they be know Ohio State,

(22:22):
what's saying this can't be one of the best teams
in the nation just because they're they're facing less adversity.

Speaker 2 (22:26):
Than other schools.

Speaker 3 (22:27):
Would you say the same argument for wanting teams with
new coaches early would apply across the board to like
an old miss or like a Florida or even in Arkansas.
You can't get them.

Speaker 7 (22:37):
All out of it.

Speaker 8 (22:38):
So I think just the less time these coaches have
to be.

Speaker 7 (22:42):
You know, there's a there's a big difference between your
eighth month in your program and in the third month
as compared to someone who's in year two and a
half versus year three. You just want to get ahead
of these guys and make sure you're not You'll see
these new coaches really turn their program into something really
major that last part of the year. I think while

(23:02):
Texas A and M wasn't quite there at the end
of last year. They were a better team with Marcel
Reid out there, and that took some time for Mike
Delko to figure out and he started Connor Weagman, and
I would have way rather played the Connor Wegman led
to Texas A and M team. So that could happen
in Florida that maybe they didn't make a quarterback change,
or maybe some of these teams say, man, we made
the wrong choice of coordinator. We got to get this

(23:24):
guy out of here immediately, and that happens later in
the season. Sometimes you do get away with you know,
I would have rather played LC late this year than
early this year. But still overall, you know, the coaches
new and has security with his job for at least
the season. You want to play that guy earlier in
the year.

Speaker 1 (23:39):
And you also think about this Texas team, right, some
folks say, well, Florida, if you played them later when
the wheels were kind of off the wagon, things might
have been different. But Texas did not look like a
consistent football team early in the year. Perhaps they caught
a break with Kentucky and Mississippi State following that Florida game.

Speaker 8 (23:57):
Yeah, I think if they played A and M early
in the year, there, they're losing that game.

Speaker 7 (24:01):
That team that they started out with the O line
problems and the complete pro incorrect defensive scheme coming out
from Pete Quick House against Florida. They're lucky it wasn't
you know, ole miss and they got and they lost
my thirty and your season's already over right there because
you've lost my thirty to them. Georgia would have won
by even more in that game. Yeah, Tech Texas got

(24:21):
away with some a little bit in this year's schedule
in the in terms of where the teams were played at,
but they also did have to go on the road
for so long. They had to play so many good
teams that it overall was a tough draw. But yeah,
it's a good point for Florida was a beatable team.
Then Texas was not the kind of team that could
beat them early in the year. They definitely would have
late in the season, but maybe A and M laying

(24:42):
the season so that would have been a.

Speaker 2 (24:43):
Better data point.

Speaker 8 (24:44):
Anyway, it just wasn't the complete team that it needed
to be this year, and that's.

Speaker 1 (24:47):
Why they're not in the playoff, So that schedule released
tomorrow night for folks that don't know already the Longhorn
road SEC games at LSU, at Missouri, at Tennessee, at Texas,
A and M. The home games you'll have arcad I
saw Florida, Mississippi State, Ole miss and of course playing
Oklahoma at the Cotton Bowl. So moving off of long

(25:08):
worn basketball, but still in the theme of hard schedules,
Sean Miller's taking his team up to Hartford on Friday
for a big time test against a top five team.
The Yukon Huskies would beat Florida last night in Jimmy
B Classic. Sean Miller's not been pleased about his team's
defensive effort so far this season. What are you noticing

(25:28):
on that side of the floor for Texas that has
to improve here as they head towards SEC play.

Speaker 2 (25:34):
Yeah, it's interesting that.

Speaker 7 (25:35):
You got that sound bite just today because I thought
it really stepped up in their game against Southern on Monday,
and that was a noticeably different thing from Virginia. But
of course he's talking about when they're playing these these
really good out of conference teams, not just four and
four Southern. When they played Virginia. They were dominated on
the perimeter. I mean it looked like a conditioning difference
from Virginia's side of things. Their players looked like they

(25:57):
cared more. I don't usually like using that kind of
that corp about a team, but the Virginia players were
just playing harder than Texas's were, and it was particularly
on the perimeter. Texas doesn't have these imposing guys down low.
Matos Scochia Titus is a great player. A big guy
can can really lean into some more muscle eventually.

Speaker 8 (26:16):
But the players of the Pope and Mark and Weaver,
which was a surprise. Really, we're getting just destroyed on
these off ball screens and they were getting driven past
by good Virginia players, but they weren't Yukon. And now
they have to play Yukon, who I think is a
top five team in the nation. So they're gonna need
to put everything into this game because they could really

(26:36):
use a real out of conference win.

Speaker 2 (26:38):
NC State was nice, but you were at.

Speaker 7 (26:40):
The bottom part of the Mauley Invitational. Is your five
to six game, so I don't think they're gonna win
this game. Ucas has a great teams. It's your one
of a rebuild for Sean Miller, but there needs to
be something that gives you a little bit more hope
going into SEC play. That our rotation's a little tighter,
which I think rillaers have to do an SEC play.
And also our guards are actually keeping up with solo
ball in sound tomorrow because they got some ball handlers

(27:02):
over at Yukon. They obviously are probably the best schemed
offense in all college basketball year over here?

Speaker 3 (27:06):
Will you be headed to Hartford for that one?

Speaker 2 (27:09):
I will not know. I'm kind of glad. I don't know.
I'll only go up to Connecticut at this time of
the year.

Speaker 3 (27:13):
That's true. That's true.

Speaker 1 (27:15):
It's a little cold up in our neck of the
woods in the DC area right now. I think they're
getting some snow later. But Evan appreciate you stopping by,
as always, appreciate your coverage. You can read Evan's work
at Inside Texas. I know you're working on some video
projects over there as well.

Speaker 2 (27:29):
Yeah, I've been doing a lot on the YouTube channel.

Speaker 7 (27:31):
We're kind of carrying back up our our weekly basketball
and then football that turns into baseball show with Nash
Talk Texas.

Speaker 8 (27:37):
So find us over on the YouTube channel as well.

Speaker 3 (27:39):
Evan, appreciate your time as always.

Speaker 10 (27:42):
Thanks Jake.

Speaker 1 (27:43):
He inted had some Sean Miller's sound bites. That was
Evan V from inside Texas, and we will hear some
of those a little later on in the program. But
up next inconceivable on a Wednesday afternoon right here on
Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Decorate, organize, and
even assemble That toy Castle Santa is pretty second hour

(28:04):
of our show here on this Wednesday afternoon. Jake Kerman
in for Craig Way today and we'll talk to Craig
in just a few minutes as he gets ready to
call Texas women's basketball.

Speaker 3 (28:14):
Against ut RGV.

Speaker 1 (28:17):
But earlier today we got to hear from Texas men's
basketball head coach Sean Miller, whose team bounced back from
a lopsided loss against Virginia with a victory over Southern
on Monday night. Here were his opening comments as he
answered some questions about both that game, the Virginia game,
and the upcoming test at Yukon on Friday night.

Speaker 3 (28:40):
This was earlier this morning.

Speaker 11 (28:42):
Well, obviously, our next game at Yukon is a tall
order and a tough task for any college basketball team.
You know, when you play Yukon right now, you're playing
against one of the best programs in the country, two
time national champion, and you know a number of people
and players that were directly responsible for winning those back

(29:06):
to back national championships. You know, number one, their coach,
Number two Alex Caraban, who I think is one of
the great college basketball.

Speaker 6 (29:15):
Players of his time. So you know, for us, it's simple.

Speaker 11 (29:19):
It's a matter of playing our very best, having a
high performance evening, competing at the very highest level that
we can, and I think that's the focus of our
preparation mindset as we make the journey to Hartford, Connecticut.

Speaker 1 (29:36):
When the Longhorns last played a ranked team, it was
at home against Virginia, one of the two Quad one games,
actually three Quad one games the Longhorns had played so far.
They had the win over Enzi State in Maui after
the loss in Charlotte to Douke to start the season.
But in that Virginia game, Sean Miller was very described

(30:01):
himself as very frustrated after the fact, as did some
of the players. He heard Jordan Pope on this show
sort of apologizing to Longhorn Nation. It was a pack
crowd and the Longhorns just never really got going in
that Virginia game. Allowed the Cavs to shoot twelve of
twenty four from three. The Longhorns on offense made only
four trays in their own right, missed several free throws

(30:23):
in the game. From a defensive efficiency standpoint, it was
their worst performance of the season. So what's the response
been like to that? What does Sean Miller want to
see from his team after a frustrating night against Virginia
the last time they played a team of a quad
one caliber.

Speaker 11 (30:43):
Yeah, you know, I wouldn't characterize, certainly my mind set
as frustrated post Virginia. I mean, we got beat badly,
We got beat by a better team, We got beat
from start to finish, and I think there was a
lot to learn and take from that game. You know,

(31:05):
during the non conference season, different things happen. And I
don't know if I've ever coached a season where, you know,
near the end of your season early March, mid March,
you don't point back towards you know, pivotal moments in
a season, whether it be really good, and those are
those are obviously fun to think back to or really

(31:25):
bad like the Virginia performance. But I just think, like
the way it's wired right now, in the months of
November and early December, you're really still learning your team.
And that's if I've been the coach at Texas for
the last five, six, seven years, I think being a
new staff and a new coach. You know, I've said
this number of times, not necessarily as an excuse, but

(31:47):
just really just seeing things clearly for what they are.
You know, time is not on our side to be
the best team that we can be in the month
of November and December with all the change we've experienced
and all at once.

Speaker 6 (32:02):
So you know, you're right.

Speaker 11 (32:04):
I think the Virginia experience will constantly be brought up,
not just to remember something terrible that happened or being
frustrated by the event, but it's I think so important
that we all can grasp.

Speaker 6 (32:17):
And learn what is it that we can do better?
What did we fix?

Speaker 11 (32:20):
You know, what do we truly understand now that maybe
we didn't before that game leading into the Yukon game.
You know, it's this, when you play against the best,
it starts with effort and energy and all out effort.
That doesn't mean you run around and just foul people
on defense, or you run real fast and take ridiculous

(32:43):
bad quick shots. But it's you know, ball pressure, deflections,
you know, being sound the last ten seconds of the
shot clock, which is big against Yukon, not having that
one player break where man, you just played really well
and get other in a connected way defensively for twenty seconds,

(33:04):
but you weren't able to finish the possession. You know,
that's effort in basketball and being able to sustain it.
You know, the other night against Southern I'll give you
a great example. Points per possession into half and again,
forget who we're playing. You know, we were sitting there
defensively at like zero point seven five and that's really good.

(33:25):
Like they had a difficult time scoring against our defense
for the first twenty minutes, but the second half they
scored one point two five points per possession. That's really
really bad. We ran out there with the same team. Again,
effort is can you keep doing it? Can you do
it after halftime? Can you do it at the end

(33:46):
of the game, at the end of the clock. So
I think that's our focus going into the Yukon Gang.
Some of what I just talked about is what we've
learned about our group post Virginia. And you know, we
could talk about scheme, we talk about a lot of
different things, but I think the hardest thing as a
coach to get across to the team and the players

(34:07):
is do you truly understand what it is to play
with amazing effort, especially on the defensive end.

Speaker 1 (34:13):
Yeah, and it's just that consistent effort that Sean Miller
has been looking for from his team that he'll need
in order to pick up a victory at Yukon. Okay,
we told you about some college football news and it
has to do with scheduling and non conference schedules. Remember
Steve Sarkisian discussed that everything after the Ohio State and

(34:36):
Michigan series, which we'll be honored at DKR, the Longhorns
will start next season with the matchup at home with
Ohio State in the non conference schedule. They'll host Michigan
the following year, after Texas made a trip up there
each of the last couple seasons, and sark was pretty
vocal about this during the kind of lobbying politicking process

(34:56):
leading into the College Football Playoff, saying that if a
team like Texas gets seemingly punished for scheduling a tough
non conference game and losing, falling in the rankings as
a result, when other teams like in Indiana are avoiding
difficult non conference games and their ranking is boosted as

(35:18):
a result. Obviously, Indiana they're ranked where they are right
now because they're undefeated, the last undefeated team in the country,
including a win over Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship.
But Sark warned that if these non conference games are
not rewarded instead, if you're punished for taking that challenge
and losing, then you will see teams kind of re

(35:39):
evaluate their priorities to line themselves up to have a
better win loss record than strength of schedule. Well, we
saw Alabama cancel their home and home series, should say
postpone their home and home series with us SAF replacing them,
I believe on their schedule and I can't remember the
team that they replace them with at the moment, But

(36:01):
this morning Georgia and Louisville mutually decided to cancel their
home and home series in twenty twenty six and twenty seven.
Both schools have said they will try to schedule a
neutral site game on a later date. Georgia did the
same with NC State canceling a home and home series
in twenty thirty three and thirty four. With the SEC

(36:21):
going to nine conference games starting next season, and we'll
see that Texas schedule reveal tomorrow night. In terms of
SEC play, there's that requirement right one P four non
conference game, So you're seeing a couple of schools cancel
home and home series, meaning they're still going to be
compliant with that P four non conference game, but Georgia

(36:42):
perhaps not seeing as much of a benefit to playing
another potentially losable game when they could schedule a team
that they'd have an easier time winning against. Something to
watch moving forward in the ever evolving world of college football.
So we'll see what other schedule changes follow, and we'll

(37:06):
see what other college football beef steals the headlines in
a week with no games quite yet bull season underway.
On Saturday, coming up, we're gonna visit with Greig Way
in Edinburgh, talk a little Texas women's hoops, get his
thoughts on the Dodger signing Edwin Diaz. Coming up right
here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred zone.

Speaker 7 (37:34):
You can.

Speaker 1 (37:38):
Yes almost four hours away by car it is still
a yacht rock Wednesday here on Sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred The Zone, and we've got America bumping us back
with You Can Do Magic, Craig.

Speaker 3 (37:53):
It's been a.

Speaker 1 (37:53):
Magical start to the season for Texas women's basketball. How's
it been spending the last couple of days with them
as they get ready for UTRGV.

Speaker 12 (38:01):
Well, they're always an interesting group to hang out with, Jake,
And it's one of the blessings that I have of
broadcasting both the men's and women's games is it's not
that there's a great deal of contrast because basketball teams
have the routines when they travel and they gather at
a certain point and then they get all the charter flight.

(38:23):
If they're flying somewhere, they fly to the place, they
go to the hotel. They usually have a team dennery,
either at the hotel or at a restaurant. There might
be a night before practice, in fact, there usually is,
and then they'll be you know, a team breakfast the
next morning, and then they'll go to the arena for
shoot around and go back. They'll have some film study,

(38:45):
they'll have a pregame meal and then you know, they'll
get all packed up, check out the hotel, go to
the arena, play the game, and then go to the
airport and fly home. And that pretty much holds true
for both the men's and women's basketball teams.

Speaker 2 (38:59):
There are some new mine.

Speaker 12 (39:02):
Vic Shaeffer as a firm believer in ice cream, and
so on the night before a game, what he does
with the team is they'll land as they did yesterday afternoon,
come over to the hotel, check in, then went to

(39:22):
team dinner a local restaurant, then went to the arena
just to get some shots up at the bird Ogden arena.
Wasn't anything real heavy detailed, but just getting some shots up,
getting used to the building a little bit, uh, and
then back to the hotel and they had ice cream
brought in for him. So that's that's kind of the
uh uh. That's kind of the tradition that you might say.

(39:45):
But I will say this too, Jake. One thing that
I appreciate about Vick Schaeffer and that a lot of
people do, in addition to him being a really good coach,
is he has a great appreciation and effect for the
game and the history of college basketball, both men's and
women's basketball. And he spent some time after the team

(40:09):
finished shooting last night in the burd Ogden Arena, talking
to them not about strategic points and wanting them to
play harder or this or that or things like that.
He was talking to him about what it should mean
to them to come down here to the Rio Grand Valley,
because it's almost unheard of that a team that is

(40:32):
ranked as highly as Texas is would make a road
trip down to the Valley to play UTRGV. But he
has a great appreciation for the program and respect for
Lane Lord, their head coach, and he also knows and
this is the deal that they work out when they
come down. They don't normally play in UTRGVS on campus

(40:57):
arena of the Fieldhouse. They did play there four years ago.
They played a game there four years ago. But when
they came here two years ago and when the men
were here three years ago, the games were played in
this arena called the bert Ogden Arena. It is for
anybody that's been to say the ATV Center in Cedar Park,
it's a lot like that. It's a it's a modern

(41:20):
like eight thousand seed arena and it's the home of
the Rio Grand Valley Vipers. The Houston Rockets G League team,
and it's a nice building. It's it's a relatively new building.
It's not that old.

Speaker 3 (41:30):
And it's seven years old.

Speaker 12 (41:33):
Yeah yeah, and it's and it's it's a nice building.
And when they came here two years ago, it drew
the largest crowd ever to see a women's basketball game
down here in the Valley, and that record may be
met or exceeded tonight. It may be in the seventy
eight hundred and eight thousand seat range. Because they're first

(41:54):
of all, as we know, with Texas having a large
alumni fan base, there are a lot of ut alums
down here in Valley, and then there's some other people
as well, and then there's people that want to come
to see the number two team in the country.

Speaker 2 (42:05):
So all of those things play into it.

Speaker 12 (42:08):
And what Vick was doing was trying to get the
players to understand they're coming down to see you guys play.
How many of them will obviously be rooting for UTRGV,
but they're coming to see you play, and you owe
it to them to play the way that you know
you can play. And so he was appealing to them
from that perspective, saying, let's let's put on a good show.

Speaker 2 (42:30):
Let's play well because that's what's expected of us.

Speaker 3 (42:32):
And it's what the expectations come with good reason.

Speaker 1 (42:36):
I mean, what this team is doing right now without
Aleah Crump, without Breonna Preston, and without Ashton Judd is
start nine to zero, beat South Carolina and UCLA back
to back days. I mean, can you put into context
just how special of us start this has been?

Speaker 12 (42:54):
Well that certainly what happened in Las Vegas got everybody's attention,
and you know, and to be North Carolina ranked twelfth
in the country to do that, I think all of
that played into it. I think, you know, they started
all preseason number four and they were pulling their own,
but then when they went to Las Vegas and beat

(43:15):
the number three team UCLA and then the number two
teams South Carolina, then it caught everybody's attention and people
can see the budding. I don't know if rivalry is
the right word, but maybe there is because of the
competitive nature of those two teams, Texas and South Carolina.
They're going to meet again next month in Colombia. It'll

(43:36):
be their only meeting in the regular season, but there's
a decent chance they meet the SEC.

Speaker 2 (43:40):
Tournament, maybe in the finals like last year.

Speaker 12 (43:43):
Who knows, maybe they meet in the NCAA Tournament like
they did last year in the final four. So yeah,
it's even possible that they could wind up playing four
times again this year. But the mere fact that they
got those wins and that their best players are playing
really well right now. Rory Harmon is playing some outstanding basketball.

(44:03):
Madison Booker and Jordan Lee has given them that third weapon.
And until they get Brianna Preston back, and they hope
that that is in the next two to three weeks,
maybe right around the time conference play starts. For Leah Crumpett,
maybe a while longer, they're just kind of monitoring her situation.
They're also hoping to get Ashton Judd back right around
the start of conference play. And when they get them back,

(44:26):
I think folks feel that they can be a real
threat on the national stage.

Speaker 1 (44:31):
You mentioned Jordan Lee, and maybe it's because of the
injuries to players like Crumb and like Preston who can
really shoot it from the outside. But outside of Jordan Lee,
who's had her nights where she's found the three point range,
Texas hasn't even shot it that well from three. They
haven't needed to yet to this point in the season,
which is pretty impressive.

Speaker 12 (44:50):
And they didn't shoot the three well at all last
year and went to the Final Four, and they didn't
shoot the three that well a year before and they
were in the Elite. Hey, historically VIC hasn't had teams
that were great three point shooting teams. I will tell
you this, Jake, they're shooting the ball better right now,
beyond the arn't thing they have in any of the

(45:11):
prior seasons of that. He's kind of chuckled about all
of that because he gets asked about it a lot.

Speaker 2 (45:17):
But when you have players who can.

Speaker 12 (45:20):
Drive and slash and dish and create, and when you've
got two big post players inside and Brady Cunningham and
Kylo Oldacre, and he played a boat together in some
sequences the other night in their game or last Sunday
in their game. So he's done that. He's done that
a little bit, and I think he plans maybe to
do that a little bit more to see how those

(45:42):
players work together, and then we'll see what happens when
the guards come back.

Speaker 1 (45:47):
Well, and Craig, you spend a lot of time with
this team, like we alluded to when you're just hanging
around them, right, do you notice anything that's different from
last year? I know it's a question that Vick Schaeffer
kind of shook off in his media availability the other day.
But does anything feel or look different to you than
last year at this point?

Speaker 2 (46:07):
Well?

Speaker 12 (46:07):
I think it did at the start when a Leah
Crump was playing, because here was a McDonald's All American
that came in and she was lighting it up. The
formula with her out has been largely Madison Booker and
Rory Harmon with a healthy dose of Jordan Lee in there.
And Lee has stepped up. I mean she averaged last

(46:27):
year I think something like six points per game and
she's sort of like right around fifteen a game right now,
and she has emerged as the best three point shooter
on this team. A lot of the other things remain
the same. And I thought about this when I was
at breakfast with him this morning. They have thirteen players

(46:48):
with him that travel down here for this game.

Speaker 1 (46:51):
Now.

Speaker 12 (46:52):
The way the setup works when you're on the road
with the team and they have like a film room
that they could look at and it's you know, kind
of like meeting rooms banquet rooms whatever. There are usually
five or six round tables that hold comfortably maybe seven

(47:12):
or eight people. And there's five or six of those tables,
and at one table, the coaching staff sits together pretty
much and they're mapping out some strategy. And then there'll
be another table where operations people, well the managers and
grand assistants and people like that set.

Speaker 2 (47:31):
Then there's another table.

Speaker 12 (47:33):
Where like the operations tory Takeolo Handles, the director of operations,
and Kathy Harston and I usually sit at that table
with her and a couple others, and so it leaves
two full tables for the team.

Speaker 2 (47:49):
But the team doesn't do that.

Speaker 12 (47:51):
All thirteen players pull up chairs and they all sit
at the same table.

Speaker 2 (47:55):
That's the closest team is. They all sit together.

Speaker 12 (47:57):
I mean it's pretty time watching them, you know, like
you know, cut a chicken breast and a pregame meal either,
keeping their elbows in, you know, but.

Speaker 1 (48:05):
It's nothing like a battle, nothing like a battle for
the rebound when they're all crashed in there.

Speaker 2 (48:10):
That's exactly right. That's how close this team is.

Speaker 12 (48:13):
They all like to sit together and they talk about things,
you know, not even just the things they do. In
film study, but just when they're when they're all just
having a meal, they all like sitting together. This team
likes each other.

Speaker 1 (48:26):
A lot, and that's easy to tell when you watch
them play. To the to the Texas men's side. Now,
where Sean Miller talked this morning about some of the
defensive points, he continues to harp on with this group,
kind of hinting that the effort on that side of
the floor still needs to be a lot better. Going
into Friday's game against Yukon. What did you notice as

(48:49):
a difference between maybe that first half of the Southern
game in the second half, Because Sean Miller talked about
the big contrast, he loved the first half defensive effort,
but he thought the second half was was way too porous.

Speaker 12 (49:00):
Yeah, and and we've we've had quite a bit of
time to talk about this, including yesterday when we recorded
Longhorn Weekly, which airs tonight, I mean tomorrow night, excuse
me at seven o'clock.

Speaker 2 (49:12):
So, uh, and folks are going, by the way, folks
are gonna be in.

Speaker 12 (49:15):
For a treat on that show. To morning, Bill Raftery
is on with us, uhudgeons. Yeah, well I asked him
for the origin of that. I asked him for the
origin of onions.

Speaker 3 (49:25):
Oh, I can't.

Speaker 12 (49:27):
Oh yeah, and and and uh and he explains it.
And I asked him about getting your puppies aligned and uh.
But you know, the funny thing about Raff is probably
other than maybe onions, his his most famous line has
sent it in Jerome when Jerome Lane shatters the backboard.

Speaker 2 (49:45):
It's sending it in Jerome.

Speaker 12 (49:47):
That one when he's working on ESPN. Well, we all
remember seeing Jerome Lane get that lib pass and slam
it in you.

Speaker 2 (49:54):
Know who through the lob pass to him.

Speaker 10 (49:56):
Who is that?

Speaker 2 (49:57):
Sean Miller.

Speaker 12 (49:58):
Oh, Sean was an outstanding point guard on that pit
team that Jerome Lane said. So we get both of
their perspectives on the sended in Jerome play and how
they're picking up glass and he said, in those days,
he raft said, we didn't have a studio. So they're
killing time on the air. They're just killing time. They

(50:22):
get Don Nelson was there scouting the game and they
had him on and they're just having to fill this
long gap like a rain delay or something, and people
are picking up glass. Meet Sean said he still last
a couple of pieces of the broken backboard, the glasses.
It took an hour to replace the shattered backboard and
get another one and get it and get it erected
in there. So we had great conversations about that stuff.

(50:44):
But to your point, the biggest thing that bothered Sean
the other night in the game against Southern was the.

Speaker 2 (50:51):
Fouling, especially in the second half.

Speaker 12 (50:53):
And after the game we visit with an assistant coach
because coach Miller has to go to the press conference.
But as he came out, he walked over to me
and Eddie Orne and just kind of like did this
and was like, the fouling, the fouling is just has
just got to stop, and uh, the unnecessary fouling. And
he gets into greater detail about that tomorrow night, as

(51:16):
to you know, the fouling that takes place, some of
it's necessary, he got to do it and things like that,
especially if it's to keep a guy from having an
easy layup or something like that. But even a guy
like MIAs Foctitus, who had a career game the other
night and just just played tremendously well.

Speaker 2 (51:34):
Uh, had he said, he could have been out there
a lot more.

Speaker 12 (51:37):
But there were just a couple of you know from
behind hippy fowls that did not need to happen. So
there's an education process that's still going on with this
team and it's going to continue for a while. As
I've said this already several times and I'll say it
again and I'll continue to say it. I have been
really impressed with Coach Miller and his staff and how

(51:57):
they teach the game. And there's a lot of teaching
that has to go with a very young basketball team.
So it's just to sit in and practice and watch
them teaching this game from what they're expecting is pretty
impressive stuff.

Speaker 2 (52:12):
So, yeah, they've got it. They've got their hands full
of Tomorrow Night.

Speaker 12 (52:16):
I mean, Alex Caravan, solo ball, all the rest of
those guys, for you kind are tremendous.

Speaker 2 (52:20):
Uh and and Dan.

Speaker 12 (52:23):
Hurley is one of the most intense driven coaches you'll
ever come across.

Speaker 2 (52:27):
I even asked Sean on.

Speaker 12 (52:29):
Long Worn Weekly about Dan Hurley and what he's like
as head coach. So there's there's some good stuff on
the show about it tomorrow Night. But to your point, Yeah,
this is going to be a huge test. And they've
played Ucon in the last three years. They just had
that much success against them. They played him in Madison
Square Garden, they played him last year in Austin, and
of course now they're playing them at what is now

(52:51):
called I've just finally found this out today.

Speaker 2 (52:56):
People's Bank Arena.

Speaker 12 (52:58):
Forever it was the Hartford Civic Center, the mall because
they're trying to buy the mall. Then it was the
Excel Center for a long time. Now it's called People's
Bank Arena, and that's where they'll be doing that on
Friday night.

Speaker 1 (53:10):
And you'll hear Sean Miller's thoughts on playing in that arena.
I think he did call it Excel Arena. Now the
outdated name as well as facing.

Speaker 12 (53:17):
All the Harvard I call it the Hertford Civic Center
of the Whalers. Yeah, we were recording the program because
that's what its original name was.

Speaker 2 (53:27):
That's when the Hertford Whalers were playing there of the NAHL.

Speaker 12 (53:30):
So yeah, I called it the Hertford Civic Centers.

Speaker 2 (53:35):
But it's People's Bank Arenas. The name of the building.

Speaker 3 (53:37):
Was it the Whalers that became your Carolina Hurricanes.

Speaker 12 (53:41):
It was, and it brought about a lot a lot
of grumbling up in the New England area because they
had met a stated goal that they had to get
I think to like ten thousand season tickets or something
like that. They met the goal, but the owners had
already decided they were moving the team to North Carolina.

Speaker 2 (54:00):
That still left a lot of people very, very unhappy.

Speaker 1 (54:02):
And it left a lot of fans of those Whaler
uniforms unhappy. I know you got to get yeah, I
know you got to catch a right over to the
arena soon, but I wanted to get your reaction first
to the Dodgers big bullpen signing Edwin Diaz. It's going
to be wearing Dodger blue for the next three years,
and a lot of folks around the league have really
praised this signing because, like you discussed with me all

(54:25):
postseason long, the bullpen was the underbelly of the Dodger
dynasty and now Diaz shores it up back there.

Speaker 12 (54:32):
Yeah, remember when we had Gene watched it on Monday
from Orlando and I had not heard. Of course, he's
an insight, That's why he's our MLB insider. His ears
to the ground, he's hearing what's going on. And I
asked him, are the Dodgers really going to do much
of anything, because you know, they didn't really do anything
in the trade deadline during the season because they were

(54:55):
waiting on guys to get healthy.

Speaker 2 (54:56):
Well, they're still waiting of some guys to get healthy.

Speaker 12 (54:59):
Evan phil It had been a pretty effective closer before
he had to undergo Tommy John surgery, and the same
thing with Michael Kopek, and and then River Ryan been
an outstanding young starting pitcher, had to undergo t J. Sir,
they're still waiting for Tony Gonsolin to get back again.
Uh so there's all of those things. M and she
and just came off of that, and we saw that
he was pretty effective in the postseason. So that's why

(55:21):
I put the question of Gene. I said, are they
and he goes, oh, no, they're going to be active.
And at first he mentioned, you know, Kyle Tucker, and
then there's a couple other guys that they might take
a look at. But he said, now they're going to
be active. And when the plane touched down here in
the valley, that's when I saw that the Dodgers at
signed Diaz and I was like wow. So I texted

(55:41):
Gene and I said, you were right about this. And
he he sent me a three word response or four
word response. They're not done yet. Uh so, you know
they We'll see what else happens with that. I'm curious
to see how the Rangers and the Astros also attack
the winter meetings and what can they do to help

(56:03):
out their ball clubs a little bit, as well as
the big name they.

Speaker 2 (56:05):
Seeing Kyle Swarber.

Speaker 12 (56:07):
Schwarber re signed with the Phillies, Pete Alonzo's names out
there right now, there's all these other big names. I'm
certainly curious to see where these guys wind up, as
well as for the team I followed.

Speaker 1 (56:19):
Yeah, Pete Alonso landed in Baltimore with the Orioles. We're
going to get Cameron Parker's reaction to a lot of
the latest MLB hot stove news coming up in the
four o'clock hour. But Craig any last keys and you
know reasons fans should be excited to tune in tonight
six fifteen for our coverage of UT women's basketball on
AM thirteen hundred zone.

Speaker 12 (56:38):
Ray Harmon is one assist away from eight hundred they've got.
I think also tonight we're going to see some of
those younger players that VIC has both sophomores and freshmen.

Speaker 2 (56:52):
I think we'll see Justice Carlton.

Speaker 12 (56:54):
Get a lot of minutes tonight, and we may see
Grace Printer, the young lady from Ireland, the freshman who
had a career high seven points the other day. Her
parents were in from Ireland. Is really cool, by the way, Jake,
to see Grace Printer's parents from Dublin, Ireland in the
watch or play the other day, and then two nights

(57:14):
ago to see Minus Foka Titus parents in from Lithuania.
They had to leave today to go back to Europe,
but it's always good because that's a long, long trip
for them. But I think we'll see Grace Printer perhaps
get some extended minutes tonight. I think we'll see several
of the younger players, and then there's always the fan
favorites like Sarah Graves who's been around for a few

(57:35):
years in a former walk on. So I think that
it could be interesting even if the game turns out
to be lopsided, which I think it probably will, but
I think it could be really interesting to see and
for folks who are tuned into the game listening to.

Speaker 2 (57:55):
Look at it.

Speaker 12 (57:55):
Hear about some different combinations and and see what these
young players can do.

Speaker 3 (57:59):
Hey, I about what she saw from Bria Cunningham on Sunday.

Speaker 2 (58:02):
Yeah, that's good. Vix had his eye on her.

Speaker 12 (58:06):
He tried to recruit her when she originally signed with Arizona.
And the funny thing is, I think he got this
close to getting her because when her name entered the portal,
he called, and he called the house and her mom.
Bray's mom answered the phone and said, coach Shaefer, she

(58:26):
kept his number.

Speaker 2 (58:28):
That's how close it was.

Speaker 12 (58:30):
Bred told me before the season started she missed a
double double by by one rebound, and I asked her
about that. She said, it always seems to be the way. Well,
it wasn't the way the other night. She got that
double double relatively early, so she had to adjust to
vis up tempo and more defensive intensive type and style

(58:52):
of play. You know, Kyla Oldacre has done that. But
they complimented one another great and then, like I said,
when they're on the floor together, it's really unique to watch.

Speaker 1 (59:01):
And the Longhorn's best defensive rebounding lineup this year has
included Cunningham on the floor, So that's a player to
watch for as the game progresses. So, Craig, we appreciate
you stopping by. I have a great call tonight and
well you'll be in and out of town tomorrow, but
we'll hold the Ford down for you.

Speaker 3 (59:17):
Right here on AM thirteen hundred zone.

Speaker 2 (59:19):
Yeah, I appreciate it.

Speaker 12 (59:20):
It's back late tonight and then back out tomorrow with
the man up to Hartford. The game is Friday night
and so we'll see how it all goes.

Speaker 2 (59:29):
It'll be a busy time and a busy weekend.

Speaker 3 (59:31):
Well, thanks for making some time for us, Craig.

Speaker 2 (59:33):
Thanks, Jake, appreciate you stepping in.

Speaker 3 (59:35):
And when we come back.

Speaker 1 (59:36):
Our show continues with more from Longhorns men's basketball head
coach Sean Miller right here on sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred zone and on the iHeartRadio app. We discussed the
defensive messaging that he's put out to his team, challenging
the effort on that side of the floor to where
it has to be better for a full forty minutes,
and here are some of those comments from earlier this morning.

Speaker 6 (59:58):
We're a work in prog.

Speaker 11 (01:00:00):
I don't have any problem in all of our team's disposition, attitude,
work ethic.

Speaker 6 (01:00:06):
We're trying to work.

Speaker 11 (01:00:08):
But you know, like all of us, as we try
to improve something, it's tough to go from you know,
something you don't feel good about to's something you're just
credibly excited and happy about. Usually the process and the
improvement is like incremental and sometimes it's not visible, like
you don't really see it, but you just inch by inch,

(01:00:28):
day by day you're improving. And that's what I would
say about our team in general, and defensively. I don't
want to like say, hey, if we take player A
out and put player B in, that's the solution.

Speaker 6 (01:00:41):
I think with us, it's more along the lines of
the eight or.

Speaker 11 (01:00:44):
Nine players we're playing every game, how can we get
better across the board, whether it be a starter or
whether it be somebody off the bench.

Speaker 6 (01:00:52):
You know, again, back to the Southern game.

Speaker 11 (01:00:54):
You know, we watched the film obviously incredibly close multiple times,
and you know, I'm talking about defense right now. Let's
say there's twenty two possessions where I can clearly point
towards a major breakdown. Could be something as simple as
reaching at the end of the clock and fouling for
no reason, but just breakdowns, correctable breakdowns, something that whether

(01:01:18):
it be an individual player or us as a coaching staff,
can really drill and do better so that those those
plays leave the game. So you know, again, if we
broke down let's say twenty times against Southern in our
last game, you know, I don't know if we'll go
from twenty to five in terms of now we only
have five breakdowns, but I know we can get it

(01:01:38):
to twelve, sixteen, fifteen, And it's just that's the process
we're in right now. Obviously, when you play a team
like UKNN, you know your room for air is very
little and marginal. But I know this that it's a
great test for us. It's a great test to see
if we've improved in that really important effort of being

(01:01:59):
able to play with much more force and competitive spirit
from start to finish, especially on the defensive end.

Speaker 1 (01:02:07):
Playing against a Dan Hurley team is a test for
any coach in college basketball, especially over the last five
years or so. Sean Miller's Xavier teams had some varying
degrees of success in pushing Yukon, particularly on the road,
even pulled off a couple of wins against them. In
Sean Miller's first season with the Musketeers. So he was asked,

(01:02:27):
what are the common traits that he notices in Dan
Hurley's Connecticut teams and what do they ask of the Longhorns.
What do you have to do to hang with Yukon?
Take a listen?

Speaker 11 (01:02:38):
Well, I think when you play Yukon, it starts in
transition where although if you look at their tempo, it
reflects a team that's very deliberate, but they usually break
their games open in transition off of their defense.

Speaker 6 (01:02:54):
They hunt three point shots, they share.

Speaker 11 (01:02:57):
The ball, and they have the ability like to really
just have a burst or multiple pockets in the game
where they go on a six nothing, eight nothing, ten
two run. And when you look at the reason why
they get block shots, steals, stops, and they're great at
pushing the pace and sharing the ball and in particular

(01:03:20):
killing you with three point shots off of your missus.

Speaker 1 (01:03:23):
So those are just a couple of the things Sean
Miller noted as keys to beating Yukon. Will hear a
little bit more from him as the matchup draws closer,
But we need a break right here on sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred to Zone, and we have breaking news.

Speaker 3 (01:03:36):
After these messages all right.

Speaker 1 (01:03:38):
Our third and final hour on this Wednesday afternoon starts
with the big news just fifteen minutes ago, the report
from ESPN's Dan Wetzel, Pete Famil, among others, that Sharon
Moore has been fired or cause by the University of Michigan.
Of course, Texas is Citrus Bowl apt own it and

(01:04:02):
the reports coming out of Ann Arbor state that tro
Moore has been terminated effective immediately, following a university investigation
that found credible evidence that coach Moore engaged in an
inappropriate relationship with a staff member. Associate head coach Biff
Pogy is going to be the interim head coach. Jake
Herbman in for Craig Way. Today, Cameron Parker joins us

(01:04:24):
now as well. What a huge story to drop just
a couple of weeks before the Longhorn see this Michigan team,
but more importantly after what.

Speaker 3 (01:04:34):
Was a pretty good season for the Wolverines.

Speaker 13 (01:04:36):
Holy cow, Jake, I mean, what a news dump here
on this Wednesday afternoon, and for it to come as
a complete shock. You know, there was no investigation that
at least publicly that we knew of, you know, based
on some of the Michigan message boards. You know, there's
been a rumor being floated about, but there's always you know,
message board rumors being floated about. This one actually true

(01:05:00):
and the breaking news come down and Bruce Feldman saying
with his chest, you know, had an appropriate relationship with
a staff member. There's some other rumors going on along
with that. I'll let you go ahead and research that yourselves,
but this is shocking, and for a Michigan program that's
already had a lot of trouble with head coaches getting

(01:05:20):
in trouble. Of course, Jim Harball, you know, and his
suspension and the wins being vacated, but you know that
was you know, that was on the field. This is
off the field, something that you can really control. And
for Sharon Moore, of course, memory came in and the
National Championship season, took over as the head coach. After
being the OC went three to zero. They go on
to win it all, winning the National Championship, defeeding Washington.

(01:05:44):
More comes in, right, you know, a bad year last year,
I would say eight and four didn't really have a quarterback.

Speaker 10 (01:05:49):
Obviously, Texas went up to the Big House took him
the down.

Speaker 13 (01:05:51):
They did be Ohio State, which is, you know, a
win for them, even though the Buck guys did go
on and win the championship, and then ninety three this year,
Bryce Underwood a freshman, signs of life for this program, right,
and then all of a sudden, just like that boom
And the timing of this couldn't be even worse, Jacob,
this is like week five, week six.

Speaker 10 (01:06:10):
That's one thing, But that happened.

Speaker 13 (01:06:11):
Now when all the when the head coaching market, I mean,
look at Penn State, who were fortunate to end up
with Matt Campbell. But now for Michigan, where do you
go from here? You know, bit pokey, he was the
head coach at UNCC Charlotte, but he's not the future.
All the top candidates have been gone, so this is
terrible timing. But you wonder who does Michigan target? And

(01:06:33):
I got a feeling, you know, the if there is
a good side of this, Jake is that he was
fired with costs, so no buy out. They don't owe
a lot of money to showing more at all, so
they can put that towards a new head coach. And
you know, considering what this program is in, you know,
a pretty favorable anil situation.

Speaker 10 (01:06:52):
What kind of head coach dould they target? Is it?

Speaker 13 (01:06:55):
Do they look at Signetty? I know he just signed
that extension, but do you look at it?

Speaker 10 (01:06:59):
What Michigan? Do you look at Marcus Freeman?

Speaker 3 (01:07:02):
He's not going to Michigan.

Speaker 13 (01:07:04):
Well, I mean, hey, when the dollars get involved, I mean,
Michigan has money, No way, it's a top program. I'm
curious what Michigan does. But unfortunate timing for the Wolverines
and uh and yeah, they play a football game in
about twenty one days.

Speaker 1 (01:07:18):
I mean you talked about the money, and apparently donations
and donors had been worried about this ever since it
leaked that Michigan was investigating him about a week ago.
Of course I didn't leak to us, but prominent donors,
according to CBS Sports, were becoming aware of the allegations
and had started to pull back on some of those contributions. Well,

(01:07:42):
Michigan had to make a quick decision here, right, because
you need your donor.

Speaker 3 (01:07:47):
Ducks in a row.

Speaker 1 (01:07:48):
With this new single window transfer portal coming up in
just a few weeks.

Speaker 13 (01:07:52):
And with the timing of this, and based on some
other information that may come out. This is going to
be a very sticky situation for the university, and it
makes sense in their part to just go ahead and
cut ties because this could turn into you know, kind
of similar to what happened with the Texas basketball coach

(01:08:14):
a few years ago in terms of just the personal
side and the nastiness of that getting out. And then
all of a sudden, you know, you kind of have
no choice with the move on because of the public
back last year and you get and also if the
donors and the boosters aren't giving you support for your
head coach, then in this new age, as you mentioned, Jake,
then you're dead in the water. So probably quick thinking

(01:08:37):
for Michigan, but they're they're in a real, real tough
spot here. But I mean, you can target those guys Signetti, Freeman,
Landing and maybe you're right, maybe they don't budge. But
if they don't budge and don't move, then who are
you hiring? You know, maybe there's an NFL coach So
it's gonna get fired this offseason that you maybe you
take a poke cat or an OC or a DC.

(01:08:58):
But this is the worst possible timing. And now, if
you're a Michigan player. You know, it's kind of similar
to LSU in terms of a lot a lot of
those guys will play for the program. But do they
now have a mass exodus because you got to move
quickly here to try and find your head coach. But like,
there's not a lot of head coaches out there, So
if they don't have someone locked down in a week

(01:09:20):
or two, you know, I'm sure they'll still play in
the in the bowl game. But looking at the next
spring next season, you're in a real tough spot for Michigan.
I mean, Ohio State, Oregon, Indiana, USC they are. They
are massive, massive winners for this because this could possibly
really set back the Michigan program a year or two.

(01:09:40):
And think about it, since that national championship, Jake have
not played in the playoff, have not played for a
Big Ten championship, you know, ninety three this year. Obviously,
they've been recruiting fine, but all of a sudden, this
this these next.

Speaker 10 (01:09:56):
Two weeks will be huge for this Michigan program.

Speaker 1 (01:09:58):
So Biff Polgy's gonna coach in interim former Charlotte coach,
and he also coached in their win at Nebraska earlier
in the year when surel Moore was serving a suspension
as a part of that sign stealing scandal from the
National Championship team a few years ago. I'm gonna give
you a couple of names that Michigan fans are already
talking about. We'll see how realistic they are, because I

(01:10:18):
don't think any name you said is realistic. If you
say Nick Sabman, I'm leaving the studio, Okay, good, and
I wasn't gonna say that. I don't think anyone you
said is realistic. Marcus Freeman, he's not leaving Notre Dame
for Michigan. I feel like it's NFL or Notre Dame
for Marcus Freeman. But anyway, Dan Lanning seems pretty entrenched.
If he wasn't leaving Oregon for Austin, he's not gonna
leave Oregon for Ann Arbor but here well, or not

(01:10:42):
leaving Oregon for Tuscaloosa that too. Jesse Minner was the
defensive coordinator under Jim Harbaugh. He's now in the same
role with Harbaugh and the LA Chargers. That's one route
they could go. That's one call they can make. Another
is Joe Brady, who is the hot name around NFL
head coaching circles. Potentially he's the OC for the Buffalo

(01:11:03):
Bills and had some college experience with Joe Burrows LSU Tigers.

Speaker 3 (01:11:08):
Those are two names that are being thrown out right away.
But it's so early and yet.

Speaker 1 (01:11:12):
Already late in this cycle, in this process for Michigan
to try and find a replacement, because you're right, she
wrote more. While there were questions about whether he could
win big games as Michigan's head coach, outside of that
Ohio State win to end last season, they've got no
consequential victories of note during his tenure there this year
and this kind of felt like one of those seasons
where Michigan took care of who they were supposed to

(01:11:34):
but fell flat in their opportunities against playoff caliber teams
and they got beat by twenty one points at USC.
But there was no doubting Sharon Moore's recruiting ability right
being able to land a guy like Bryce Underwood. They've
got some elite young talent on that roster that was
already shark circling for as we speak.

Speaker 13 (01:11:58):
Speaking of coaches here, what about other former Nor Dame
coach Brian Kelly?

Speaker 10 (01:12:02):
Could interest Brian.

Speaker 1 (01:12:03):
Kelly that's a call they might make. I think that
one that one might be on some lists.

Speaker 13 (01:12:08):
Jesse Mencher makes a lot of sense. I don't know
if it moves a needle for for anybody. I mean, shoot,
like you know, it would be a great fit at Michigan.
Matt Campbell, he's at ben State now. I mean, and
I don't think you would go after even though I
think James Franklin would be good program builder. I think
he's gonna do a great typ of fought tech. I

(01:12:29):
don't I don't think you can go after him. This
is I mean, this is terrible for Michigan.

Speaker 3 (01:12:35):
Obviously, Pat Fitzgerald, he might go to Michigan State.

Speaker 1 (01:12:41):
Could Michigan poach him from their in state rival in
the middle of the process.

Speaker 10 (01:12:46):
I feel like they're going to have to take a
big swing at a couple of big names.

Speaker 13 (01:12:51):
And then, honestly, if if you're Michigan, you know, maybe
you I know, I think it's almost better if you
a year.

Speaker 10 (01:13:02):
And wait until the next.

Speaker 13 (01:13:03):
Coaching cycle, because if you if you lock someone down
like okay, say Jesse Minner, give him a five year deal, whatever,
you win eight games this year, then you win eight games.
Lot it's the same story. It's okay, he's not the guy,
and all of a sudden, now you're firing him. You're
paying a lot of money. Why don't you just maybe
I don't know if bit pokey is the answer for

(01:13:25):
twenty twenty six, but if you can't land a big name.

Speaker 10 (01:13:28):
Or a guy you want, God, I'm seeing John Gruden
on Twitter. I love this.

Speaker 13 (01:13:31):
I love when John Gruden enters the head coaching candidate
equation on college football Twitter. If you can't go and
get a big name, Jake, I honestly just wonder if
you just take a year and just say, Okay, we're
gonna wait and see what the coaching market looks like
in twenty twenty six, twenty twenty seven, because you're so
far late into this that I feel like you're gonna

(01:13:54):
get stuck with someone that you're not really thrilled with.
And the worst thing you could do right now is
lock that person up to a big contract, only for
you to be behind the eight ball and paying a
lot of buyout money two, three, four years down the road.
But I don't know that that's even the current option
now in college football. But that I mean, looking at
who's available. There's no one that moves the needle. And

(01:14:16):
I thought there's Michigan fans that are, you know, Jetfish.
Maybe it's jet Fish you know at Washington came over
from Arizona. But even then, you know, still haven't really
seen him do it yet. I mean, Washington good football team,
but not a lot of track record there, not a
lot of success. You can point out that Washington team.
I mean, they hung tough in some games this year.

(01:14:38):
I actually thought they underachieved a little bit. So much
talent on the offensive side of the ball. But Jetfish
has done less with has done more with less. I mean,
you look back during his tenure at Arizona.

Speaker 1 (01:14:49):
By the way I threw out Pat Fitzgerald, I didn't
realize that he had already put pen to paper there.

Speaker 3 (01:14:54):
I thought those were still in the rumor stage.

Speaker 1 (01:14:56):
But it looks like Pat Fitzgerald for the last five
days has been in East Lansing.

Speaker 3 (01:15:00):
So that's off the board too.

Speaker 10 (01:15:03):
Yeah, he's signed with Michigan State.

Speaker 13 (01:15:04):
So and I think the didn't Miltuger get fired also
for probable cause similar inappropriate religions stuff. So something going
on with Michigan in the water and their head football
coaches getting fired for cause.

Speaker 3 (01:15:17):
So for a Michigan program that.

Speaker 1 (01:15:23):
Often went by the statement, who's got it better than
us under their last head coach? Right now, I don't
think there's a team in the Power Forward that's in
a worse situation in the short term.

Speaker 13 (01:15:36):
Oh, that's that's a really good debate. Yep, Michigan's up there.
I think Ole miss will be okay. I think Golding
is going to do a decent enough job. But in
terms from the from the big two schools are Big
two conferences rather Yeah, I think Michigan right now is
in is in a really real, real tough predicament.

Speaker 10 (01:16:01):
Where do you go from here? If you're if you're Michigan,
there's there's not a lot of answers.

Speaker 1 (01:16:06):
Seeing some Fran Brown smoke the Syracuse head coach. Obviously
they were. They did not have a good season, lost
their quarterback Angelie early in the season, didn't have a
great backup plan in the portal. But for Michigan, you
have to get somebody in there quickly. That's so important
because a guy like Bryce Underwood is going to have

(01:16:27):
suitors in every corner of college football.

Speaker 13 (01:16:30):
Nicole Araback is from NBC supports reporting that Killin de
Boorr is gonna be the top name for Michigan.

Speaker 3 (01:16:38):
But you're not going to Michigan.

Speaker 10 (01:16:40):
I don't.

Speaker 1 (01:16:42):
I know.

Speaker 10 (01:16:42):
He has more ties to that area of the country
than Alabama.

Speaker 13 (01:16:46):
I mean, okay, if Alabama loses in the first round
the Oklahoma again, maybe there's a amicable split between the
BAMA boosters in Michigan.

Speaker 10 (01:16:56):
But even then it's gonna it's gonna Michigan's.

Speaker 13 (01:17:00):
You have to if your Michigan take a big swing
at a name like Debor, even if they say, even
if the agent hangs up the phone call, you're still
making that call and sing, is there any interest here?

Speaker 10 (01:17:09):
Signetty Freeman, Debora Landing. You're Michigan.

Speaker 13 (01:17:12):
You cannot go out like Jesse Mentor is a great name,
great defensive coordinator.

Speaker 10 (01:17:17):
You need someone better than that.

Speaker 3 (01:17:20):
If Klin de Boor left Alabama for Michigan.

Speaker 1 (01:17:23):
See, that's where you get to the game of dominoes
that will fall from this, not just in terms of players,
but in terms of coaches at every level. But Michigan
firing Charon More for cause just half an hour ago.
We're reacting to that news and much much more. We'll
talk a little bit of NFL as we have time
during this final hour of the program right here on

(01:17:44):
Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone. We need a break,
but stick with us for more when we come back.
And on that text line, we're reacting to the news
of Michigan parting ways with head coach Sharon More fired
for cause earlier this afternoon, less than an hour ago.

(01:18:05):
Jake Boerman Cameron Parker in for Craig Way on a
yacht Rock Wednesday. This one's not quite yacht rock camp,
but you can hear the influences from Mountjoy's rearrange us
as we rearrange perhaps some nickname coaches coming around the SEC,
maybe even into the Big Ten where Michigan might poach
their next head coach. Have we said the obligatory Urban

(01:18:27):
Meyer yet someone wants to know on the text line.

Speaker 10 (01:18:31):
Good text Urban Meyer for sure is a good one.

Speaker 13 (01:18:36):
Text coming in talking about the possibilities for Michigan on
SEC network, Urban Meyer, the Harbaughs. You know, if Jim
gets fired by Baltimore this year, which if they missed
the playoffs, we could see a shake up in Baltimore.
I honestly think it'd be pretty funny, if you know.
I guess it probably Pittsburgh. But if Pittsburgh loses the
wildcard again. They fired Mike Tomlin in the raven fire Harball,

(01:19:01):
I mean, the Steelers would hire Jim Harball, right, I mean,
it just makes way too much sense. Or at the
Bengals fire Zach Taylor, do they hire Horrible. I can't
imagine Jim wants to go by John, Right, the Ravens
head coach. I can't imagine John wants to go back
to college and coach in college after everything his brother

(01:19:21):
went through.

Speaker 1 (01:19:22):
Well, he can't if he goes back to college. He's
got the suspension to serve John. Oh that's right, John, Jim. Yeah,
John will not go back to college either.

Speaker 13 (01:19:32):
No, I don't think so either. But that's the name
that ESPN's flowing around, floating around. It's terrible, it's terrible.

Speaker 1 (01:19:39):
Somebody says he took go Blue. Literally. Someone says they're
gonna go after those big names. I'm telling you they're
gonna go after de boor Freeman. They probably already have
maybe floated some stuff out there. Lanning, It's it's Michigan.
You know, you cannot you can't waste too much much

(01:20:00):
time here. You know that there's are I'm seeing on
the message boards here in Michigan. I'm just I'm gonna
spend a lot of time in this message board. It's
gonna be great. Why not keep it Pokey for the year.

Speaker 13 (01:20:10):
That's that's my point, because if you can't get Signetty
or Marcus Freeman or the guy you want keep, you know,
whether it's Wink Martindale or Bif Pokey, whoever, have that
as the placeholder for the years you can actually have
a full season to conduct a coaching church. And then
at the end of you know, twenty twenty six, you know,

(01:20:30):
who knows, there might be some names. You know, I
don't think a lot of people us thought James Franklin
would be on the coaching market after making the playoff,
after being what game away from the National Championship a
year ago. There's gonna be There's gonna be at least
one or two or three coaches who will be available
that right now we're thinking probably are locked in. So

(01:20:52):
you know, if you can't get a big name, I say,
just you stick with Pogy. You have enough talent right
that year out, Sure you might win seven or eight games,
but maybe you get your coach after that.

Speaker 1 (01:21:06):
I think the calculation with Pogy is, does keeping him
free you really give the stability that you're perceiving that
it does. Does keeping him in that spot keep enough
of the roster together. It's where your recruiting momentum doesn't
totally fall apart because they have deep, deep pockets.

Speaker 3 (01:21:23):
Michigan does so deep that baby him.

Speaker 1 (01:21:25):
Want any part of the big ten private equity venture
that got floated around.

Speaker 13 (01:21:29):
Seen Clark Lee's name, Paul christ oh Urban Myers showing
up on the on the message boards leading to some
great fights.

Speaker 10 (01:21:39):
I mean, this is great. I'm a Texas fansy.

Speaker 13 (01:21:43):
If you're looking for picking up here on this Wednesday afternoon,
check out whatever whatever message board website you subscribe to,
check out the Michigan side of it, because there is
some great stuff on here. I don't know, Jake, I
mean I tell you what, though, who this does benefit?
Because I think about it's Texas. Now you do have

(01:22:04):
the like, Hey, our head coach just got fired, let's
rally together.

Speaker 10 (01:22:08):
I don't.

Speaker 13 (01:22:09):
I think Texas has way too much talent on this
team that I think they're gonna handle Michigan. Uh, well,
we don't know what Michigan they're going to see. Yeah,
we don't know what Texas we're going to see. I mean,
we're assuming we haven't got too and we've only we've
had five players in the portal. We still don't know
who's going to participate in who's not. I mean, unless
the entire first team of Texas decided to set this

(01:22:30):
game out. I think Texas handles Michigan with or without
Searon Moore. But maybe this, you know, we'll bring them together.
You know, let's let's play for each other, YadA, YadA, YadA,
you know that hoo rah stuff. But this, I mean,
you're in Texas is going to spend this entire December
under the radar because everyone's going to be talking about
Searon Moore and who does Michigan hire as their head coach?

(01:22:53):
So uh now it's achievable. I'm not sure how fired
at Michigan is. I'm not sure how fired to Boston
is for for this game. But this does benefit Texas
and as I said, Ohio State, Indiana, Oregon usc big
winners from this because your your big rival in a
big obstacle in the Big Ten, all of a sudden,

(01:23:15):
let's looking for a head coach in the middle of December.

Speaker 1 (01:23:18):
Well, there were folks that, you know, thought, maybe sure OWD.
Moore wasn't going to be able to get Michigan over
that hump, so perhaps they can upgrade with this next
higher I mean, long term, it might be a win.
I wasn't necessarily sold on Moore's ability to coach, but
I think the way we're talking about this is just okay.
Short term, the carousel has pretty much ground to a halt. Right.

(01:23:39):
Everybody's kind of taken their seats, the music has stopped,
and Michigan is the one standing there without a chair.

Speaker 13 (01:23:45):
Yeah, Matt Campbell was the last domino the fall, and
again Penn State kind of fell into that because the
guys whoever they wanted either, you know, whoever they reached
out to, had no interest in going to that program.
It worked out they got Mack Campbell. I think that's
a guy who you're speaking of winning with less, doing
more with less. That's what Matt Campbell's done at Iowa State,

(01:24:07):
and he kind of fits that culture as well.

Speaker 10 (01:24:10):
Long term.

Speaker 13 (01:24:11):
You know, I wasn't sold on Shrean Moore either as
a head coach, you know, nine wins this season.

Speaker 1 (01:24:17):
But.

Speaker 13 (01:24:19):
You know quarterback. Yeah, exactly so. And I think Jake
neither were the donors or the boosters. Also, I don't
think they were super bad into him, because I think
if this was a Ryan Day type or Signetti type,
you know, do they try and you know, sweep this

(01:24:40):
under the rug or suspend suspend him type thing, you know,
like they did with Harball, right, I mean, they went
through a lot of crap with Harball because they knew
he was a darn good football coach. Maybe part of
it too, is like, you know what, we're not sure
about him, but we do have an out. We have costs,
and for Michigan, they saw that and said, let's just
go ahead and make this move, even though we're not

(01:25:02):
going to have a head coach. And who knows who
our next head coach will be. Because obviously it sounds
like this kind of popped up within the past week
because he's been talking about his staff for next season.
You know, Michigan's been figuring out who's going to be
their their OCDC next season. You're still recruiting, so obviously
this kind of popped up within the past couple maybe
a week or two or so ago. But yeah, I

(01:25:24):
think that the boosters, the staff or the boosters you know,
and the heavy hitters in this program probably agree with you, Jake,
and that they don't think Shroon Moore is the next guy.
And they saw cause and saw a window for opportunity
and decided let's go ahead and fire him, even though
it may cost us.

Speaker 10 (01:25:42):
A season or two.

Speaker 1 (01:25:43):
We started the show at two o'clock today, every day
two to five right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred Zone. I said there might not be any college
football playoff rankings to discuss, but there's always drama in
the ever evolving soap opera of college football, And today
we talked about the Notre Dame versus eight a CC Beef,
talked about Brent Yormark's response to Pete Pivaqua's sound bites

(01:26:05):
talking about irreparable damage. Did you hear this story about
the bookstore in South Bend that canceled the signing for
Ivan Mazelle's book on the Notre Dame author because Mazelle's
on the college football Playoff committee.

Speaker 10 (01:26:16):
Oh no, that's great. I love that pettiness.

Speaker 1 (01:26:18):
The cooler heads prevailed, but for a couple of hours
the book signing was postponed.

Speaker 13 (01:26:24):
It's back on the pettiness out of South Bend. Is
is incredible, and you know a lot of people are
talking about them throwing fix. I can't believe brett or
Mark's remarks of saying it was egregious. When if this
had happened to the Big Twelve, if the Big Twelve
got ac Seed here in.

Speaker 10 (01:26:46):
Their conference champions it's a verb.

Speaker 13 (01:26:48):
Now ac Seed didn't get in, Your Mark would still
be talking about it, right, he probably he probably would
have been broadcasting live from the WWE next event with
their Big Twelve part. So a lot of hypocritical comments
coming from all over the country here on both sides.
But it hey, it's only college football, right, I mean,

(01:27:10):
we're not so much of the storyline good and bad.
I think that there's more bad in this, but we
haven't even talked about I feel like, who's going to
win the playoff. It's all been about what teams did
not get in the playoff, Notre Dame's snubbing, their reaction
to not playing in a ballgame, the Vaqua acc your
Mark stuff, and then now the Sharon more stuff. You know,

(01:27:32):
we're kind of forgetting about this college football to be
played here, and we.

Speaker 1 (01:27:36):
Will discuss that, I promise on the program both this
week and next with Greig's back, and we'll have some
guests coming on next week to talk about the matchups themselves.
But that takes a back seat when you've got email scandals.
For instance, apparently we found out this morning Notre Dame
was c seed on the ACC's conference wide emails talking
about this is our social media campaign about why Miami's

(01:27:59):
in and Notre Dame should be.

Speaker 10 (01:28:00):
Yeah, I love that, I love that.

Speaker 12 (01:28:01):
Is there?

Speaker 10 (01:28:02):
What did the emails say? I've not seen these.

Speaker 1 (01:28:04):
I don't know that the emails have been leaked yet,
but what we know is Notre Dame received them when
they should not.

Speaker 13 (01:28:10):
Have, and that maybe explains a little bit more why
Thevaqua and Notre Dame was so pee. I mean, this
is the greatest. You reply, oh, yeah, I did it
today up the email. It happens, happens all the time,
but yeah, no, I think you're okay there that this

(01:28:35):
is I mean, it's it's truly truly the greatest in
dumbest sport that we're in right now with with all
the college football playoff hooplah and then this stremor and
more stuff coming up, and then this this email chain
thing that I did not know about. You can't make
it up. It's it's it sounds, you know. It's almost

(01:28:55):
like an episode of Succession being c seed on an
email chain showing US social media campaign that was promoting
Miami over Notre Dame even though you did lose to
Miami in the regular season. I saw was a Bavaqua
who said it was it yesterday that Notre Dame had
one of the greatest ten game win streaks in history.

Speaker 1 (01:29:17):
The most dominant ten game stretch in college football. Meanwhile,
you beat three two win teams.

Speaker 10 (01:29:24):
Yeah, let's pull it. Please hold the scheduleator, I'm pulling
it up.

Speaker 1 (01:29:26):
Go ahead, three two win teams and two four win teams.
Let me let let's make sure we get this right.

Speaker 10 (01:29:32):
Do you give up thirty points?

Speaker 13 (01:29:33):
You played at Arkansas who fired their coach, Boise State,
NC State ranked went over USC Boston College, that game
was close, Navy number twenty two, Pittsburgh Sarahcuse Stanford used
So you beat two top twenty five teams, Pittsburgh dropped
out at the end, who were at the time ranked

(01:29:56):
the top twenty five but over twenty in twenty second
dominant ten game win stream. Meanwhile, you have Indiana who
went undefeated this year, including rank wins over what Ohio
State and then Oregon and Iowa Iowa, and then they
did beat Penn State before Penn State went down the turnpike.

(01:30:18):
That's that's again, like this is why college football is
so great. Dominant ten game win streak. I mean, that's
just a quote that they just can't make up makeup.

Speaker 1 (01:30:29):
Meanwhile, you led by one score for most of the
game against Boston College, who by the way, won two
games this season and one was against Fordham.

Speaker 10 (01:30:40):
You know, I do think No. Dame is a good
football team. You know, they are what the catch of
the year.

Speaker 13 (01:30:45):
Away from beating Miami and a terrible there's a couple
of terrible no calls. Yeah, and that so sequenced the
very end against A and m they arguably could be
twelve zero, but now they're ten and two and you
know what, you lost to them, a team that had
the same record as you. And if head the heads
don't matter, then what is the point of playing head

(01:31:06):
to head?

Speaker 1 (01:31:07):
Yeah, I think those are all those are all very
valid points, and we heard from both sides of that
earlier in the show piece.

Speaker 13 (01:31:13):
They also have a I can't believe it's actually that
it's not a bigger deal. They have a contract or
they will legally be in the College Football Playoff starting
next season at they're ranked in the top twelve.

Speaker 10 (01:31:23):
That is mind blowing to me.

Speaker 3 (01:31:24):
A memorandum of understanding.

Speaker 13 (01:31:26):
Basically, like I stall think Danny Davis tweeted this out,
how can Texas get that?

Speaker 10 (01:31:31):
If you're ranked in the top twelve, can we get in?

Speaker 13 (01:31:34):
And you know the playoff will expand to fourteen or
sixteen teams next year or in two years. Nor Dames
has to win ten games and probably nine games now
going forward and they'll automatically be in the College football
You know how you can also, you know, maybe avoid
this is if you played in the conference like the
ACC that you already that you would have if you

(01:31:56):
played the ACC schedule, you would have been in the
ACC title game. I'm guessing you probably take care of
eight and four Duke or number twenty two Virginia, whoever
it might be, and then you have a case for
the Clashtball playoff. They decide not to play in it
for financial reason, which I understand because they get paid
a lot of money from NBC to not be in
a conference for football. But that's just way the cookie crumbles, right.

(01:32:20):
This game has made their bed and they are laying
in it. This year, they were definitely hurt by not
playing in a conference. But next year, with this memorandum
of understanding, just finished top twelve. Unless the playoff expands,
then you finish top thirteen and you're in. They play
three true road games, two neutral site games. I said
this stat earlier, but.

Speaker 1 (01:32:42):
Guess how many of those games away from South Bend
are against Bull eligible teams.

Speaker 10 (01:32:47):
From this year?

Speaker 1 (01:32:48):
From this year, four of the five teams they're playing
away from South Bend didn't go to a bowl game,
and the one that went is Navy.

Speaker 13 (01:33:00):
Goes back to my A and M argument here that
you know, sure, they have a great record and they
have a lot of great names, but I mean they
played four teams who fired their head coach. You know, Missouri, LSU, Arkansas, Florida.
You beat Missippi State, who's not a Auburn, So five coaches.

(01:33:20):
I'm sorry, Auburn Florida fired their head coach Arkansas lsu Okay,
Missouri had lost their their top two quarterbacks. You played
a third string quarterback inst Missouri. South Carolina win was
impressive even though you were down by what twenty thirty points?
Thirty to nothing right halftime, thirty seven and a half
time down. Not a lot of good wins they're on

(01:33:41):
that schedule, and I'm curious, Jake, if you know A
and M maybe gets exposed against Miami, and if not,
you're playing well Ohio State in the second round the playoffs.

Speaker 10 (01:33:51):
Good luck with that.

Speaker 1 (01:33:53):
We'll talk a little more about the playoff and again,
if we have time to get to anything else, we will.
But we're reacting to the new charle More five fired
at Michigan four cause just earlier this afternoon. We'll come
back with some more college football notes right here on
Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred zone. Coming closer to the

(01:34:15):
home stretch now on this Wednesday afternoon Jake Herman and
Cameron Parker in for Craig Way. Craig will be on
the air starting at six fifteen tonight when the Texas
women's basketball team takes on UTRGV at Burdogen Arena Cam
will be behind the board doing a little halftime report
during that as well. Maybe you'll have some new updates
on the Michigan coaching candidates. By then, we had Evan

(01:34:37):
Veth on the show earlier. He agrees with you that
Texas is one of the most impacted teams outside of
the Big Ten with this coaching news. He writes, they
play Michigan in three weeks, they play Michigan in austin
twenty twenty seven, when Bryce Underwood would be a junior,
And there's a lot of key recruits that Michigan and
Texas have gone back and forth on.

Speaker 13 (01:34:56):
Yeah, and you know another part of this too, Jake,
is with this head coaching change, a lot of the
guys who did sign their blood of intent, which technically
is still a thing. They'll probably Michigan likely they do
the right thing, will honor them and to decide like, hey,
new head coach, we want to sign somewhere else now,
number eleven recruiting class. I'm looking at their their their

(01:35:18):
list here of guys that possibly you know, there's that
Liberty Hill defensive lineman.

Speaker 3 (01:35:24):
Oh I saw him earlier this year. Alistair Vallejo just
wrecked the game against Basstrop that I called.

Speaker 10 (01:35:29):
Jamarian Vincent and wake O Connolly.

Speaker 13 (01:35:31):
You know, he was a four star cornerback that I
think Texas was looking at Jordan Deck from Frisco lone star.

Speaker 10 (01:35:38):
So you know, we'll see what happens.

Speaker 13 (01:35:41):
Michigan to me is one of those programs kind of
like LSU that they no matter who the head coaches,
they seem to always recruit well and be able to
recruit guys who just want to play for the program,
want to wear the blue and maze. But this is
gonna this could be a huge domino effect in college football.

(01:36:02):
Rob Dillingham or Kenny Dillingham, not Rob billing him. That'd
be interesting if he decided to coach college football. But Kenny,
I think he's somehow one of the most underrated collegetball
coach at the moment. But again, you know, he is
an Arizona State grad. He probably wants to possibly stay
there or stay in the Big twelve. Maybe a move
to a PAC twelve's or a PAC twelve or a

(01:36:22):
Big ten school maybe that could be in his future.

Speaker 10 (01:36:26):
Could it be Michigan, but that's another.

Speaker 2 (01:36:28):
Name that.

Speaker 13 (01:36:30):
He probably also like the target I think, you know,
he'd be a great head coach with a lot of promise,
and you know he's pretty young too.

Speaker 1 (01:36:39):
Well, and we'll see, you know, where this coaching surge
goes and how long it lasts. Almost just as interesting
with the Citrus Bowl on the horizon, obviously, if we
hear of Sheron more, I mean, excuse me, if we
hear of Michigan opting out of the Citrus Bowl, we'll
let you know right away. I don't think that's going
to happen. I think they might be kind of locked

(01:37:00):
into that at this point.

Speaker 10 (01:37:01):
How crazy would that be?

Speaker 13 (01:37:04):
And then at that point it does sound like Sark
in this program, really does they do want to play
in a ballgame? You know, a texture on the text
on kind of you know, same thought process. There's notre
dame decide you know what, Actually we do want to
play in a ball game. We're gonna play your tex.
That would be quite the turnaround. I'm guessing Michigan still

(01:37:25):
will honor that, just because they have so many young guys,
and you know, I think you know, bif Pogey stepping in,
you know, he's already coached a football game this season, obviously,
his past experience as the head coach for Charlotte un CC.
I don't think Michigan would would cancel their ballgame, but hey,
you never know again. You know, there is a chance

(01:37:48):
that a lot of players decide, you know what, we're
going to enter the portal here, and all of a
sudden you have a football team, you know, kind of
like the Florida State situation when they played with Georgia
and after they missed the playoff years ago and lost
by like sixty, they still played that bowl game despite
losing most of their roster to the portal here. So
I expect Michigan to play in this game, but you know,

(01:38:08):
do they find their head coach before then, I'd be.

Speaker 3 (01:38:12):
A little nervous.

Speaker 1 (01:38:13):
I think if I was Alabama, I shot down your
Kalin Debora idea right away. Obviously, he's involved in the
College Football playoff and that game is not taking place
for another nine days, and Michigan might have to have
its kind of candidate in place before that. But his
name has been brought up a lot. He mentioned that

(01:38:33):
he's happy in Tuscaloosa, but there's been some questions there
about the fit at times. I don't think he'll leave Alabama,
but if there was a job that more matched him,
it might be Michigan.

Speaker 13 (01:38:46):
Yeah, I think it was a Pete Nakos is on
on three. Yes he's he reported. I don't know if
or he just tweeted it out or report it in
the story that you know, the Bower to Michigan is
a lot more possible than the Bowl or the Penn State, right,
which maybe that means nothing, maybe it means something here.
But you know, again, I do wonder if if say

(01:39:09):
BAMA has a quick exit, they lose to Oklahoma, second
time team, that they should I think they should beat
for sure. You know, there's been the boat has kind
of been on the hot seat, and I don't think
he I don't. I don't think he was the higher
that a lot of BAMA boosters wanted a lot of
donors wanted to get. But you know, it was a

(01:39:31):
big enough higher. And I wonder if they struggled in
the playoff. You missed the playoff last season, first round
exit to Oklahoma in your second season, I wonder if
there's you know, some sort of hey, Michigan will pay
the buy out, but then then Alabama's in the same
spot as Michigan is right now, So why would you

(01:39:51):
want to do that if you're a football program, unless
you lose like fifth enough in to Oklahoma, which Oklahoma
cannot score fifty points in that football game. So that's
why I wonder maybe if you wait until next season,
maybe Bama and the bow are split up. Bama has
time to find their next head coach. Michigan goes ahead
and takes to Bower after one year with the Pogey.

(01:40:14):
But there's there's not Michigan is boxed in here with
sure and with losing Sharon More at this point in
the season, obviously.

Speaker 3 (01:40:23):
Two years into a five year deal.

Speaker 1 (01:40:25):
As Adam Schefter reports, the school's firing him for case
means it does not have to pay the nearly twelve
point three million dollars buyout again. He has been with
Michigan since twenty eighteen as the position coach, moved up
through the ranks, was the offensive coordinator, and then took
over after that twenty twenty three national title. But just
about an hour ago fired with cause from the Michigan

(01:40:49):
Wolverines football program. Well, there's a lot that we didn't
get to Forgod reach.

Speaker 10 (01:40:53):
Reckan news coming in right now with Jakes. What do
we have from Jeff McLean?

Speaker 13 (01:40:57):
The positivity rabbit is no longer in the Eagles lockroom
for a team source.

Speaker 3 (01:41:01):
Too much negative energy after Monday Night's loss.

Speaker 13 (01:41:04):
So nothing to do with Sean Moore and Michigan, but
the no more positivity rabbit in Ego's locker room.

Speaker 1 (01:41:08):
We were gonna hear from Brian Schottenheimer who confirmed he
was cheering for the Chargers. The one news item there
we wanted to get to Ceedee Lamb still in the
concussion protocol at the moment as the Cowboys prepared to
take on the Vikings tough. Uh.

Speaker 13 (01:41:22):
Vikings did win last week, so good for them again.
You need you gotta win with four games three of
the last four. You need Philadelphia lose to the last four,
or if Dallas needs to win all four in Philadelphia
has to lose uh two out of the four.

Speaker 2 (01:41:37):
Right.

Speaker 1 (01:41:37):
If Dallas wins all four, the NFL, Sorry, the Athletic
NFL predictor for the playoffs gives them fifty four percent.

Speaker 13 (01:41:45):
But does that include the positivity rabbit being cut from
the team. Does that improve the chances to take away
the chances? Things we got to think about here.

Speaker 1 (01:41:52):
What about Mike Wazowski getting an extension. That's true that
the actor that one in either a lot to think about,
lots to think about, but not a lot of time
left in the program. We need another break here on
