Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's a brand new week here in Austin, Texas, and
glad to have you with us here on the Craig
Ways Show on this Monday afternoon. I'm Cameron Parker, filling
in for Craig Way, who begins week two of his
yearly sabbatico out to the North Carolina Coast and glad
Craig gets some time away. It's the recharge for the

(00:21):
next football season, and I'm glad to be with you
here filling in on this Monday afternoon. A beautiful day outside,
but it is hot, hot, and hot in Austin, Texas.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
As.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
We have reached the last day of June somehow in
twenty twenty five July first tomorrow, which means we're about
two months away from Texas football kicking off against Ohio
State in the Shoe. We're so close to the season starting,
and we got some great Texas football talk to get
into today. It's the off season, but there are always

(00:55):
storylines that talk about and some fun stuff from over
the weekend, including Arch Manning speaking at the Manning Passing Academy.
You will hear some of that conversation in the three
o'clock gallery as he spends some time with the local media,
including our guy CJ. Vogel from on Texas Football, talking
about his off season, talking about his favorite restaurants in Austin.

(01:19):
Steve Sarkshan went over the weekend visited with Greg malcroy
on the Always College Football podcast on ESPN. We're going
to play you some of that conversation each hour of
today's show as sark talked about his off season his
expectations for next season in shouting out some key players,
some positional groups that maybe you have some question marks

(01:41):
heading into the next season, but Steve Sarkeshan is very
bullish on them. We'll get to that, some key offensive
groups that have a lot of question marks from the outside.
But I think sark is more optimistic and more confident
than most people would assume. So all of that, we
are going to talk a little NBA in NFL free agency,

(02:01):
a lot of moves being made in both leagues right
now impacting your favorite teams, and of course we'll get
too inconceivable on this Monday edition of The Craig Way Show.

the eight one five three zero, followed by your message
glad to have you listening and already got text in

(03:30):
kim My OKC Championship gear has just to write that
the house can't wait to get home. Dang, you got
it quick, very quick. I don't know if I've even
gotten a shipping email yet, but you may have ordered
the first night. I went it to the next day
so excited for you. Man awesome. Let me know what
items you got. I think I spent about one hundred
and fifty bucks on a couple of different shirts and items.

(03:52):
So got to go all in, right. I think when
the Rangers won the World Series, I bought a Corey
Seeker jersey stitched on a World Series logo on the side,
because who knows the next time that the Rangers will
get there. A couple of tough losses the Mariners over
this past weekend, but again Texas where Texas eight one
to five three zero, followed by your message. Okay, We'll

(04:16):
begin with some NFL news. The Pittsburgh Steelers have been
busy today. They've been busy this offseason. Of course, they're
the team that you go into every year and you're like,
you know, who's their quarterback, Trubisky, Russell Wilson. I mean,
I guess they'll make the play No, they're not gonna

(04:38):
make the playoffs, right, You're gonna talk yourself into somebody else.
And then what happens. They somehow win eight, nine or
ten games and they're in the playoffs. But you know,
since Roethlisberger retired, I don't think they've won a playoff game.
They're in the playoffs every year, but it kind of
feels like they're on the cuffs of either overperforming every
season but yet not doing anything in every season, if

(05:02):
that makes sense, because they get to the playoffs, but
they're not gonna win a game. And it feels like
that's kind of been the common theme for the Steelers
the last couple of years. So you know, there's kind
of been Mike Tomlin on the hot seat type of
conversation every year. But it seems like the Rooney family
just has no interest in firing a super Bowl winning

(05:23):
head coach, and hey, I understand why, but year in
and year out, basically since Roethlisberger retired, they have not
really been a true contender. They made the playoffs every
year dating back to twenty twenty except for twenty twenty two,
and then from twenty fourteen to twenty seventeen made the

(05:44):
playoffs every single year. There was a gap in twenty
eighteen twenty nineteen where they did not make the playoffs.
But they've been a consistent team in the AFC North
every single year, but have not really been true contenders.
So this year they go out they do. They signed
Aaron Rodgers and it took some time, but they got

(06:06):
Rogers in. I think Rogers wanted to see how the
NFL draft went. Of course, Russell Wilson no longer in Pittsburgh.
So they go out, they get Aaron Rodgers. Remember they
made the big trades for DK metcalf right from Seattle.
They get Rogers receiver one before Rogers even signed. Well,
they've made a couple more moves today, trading for a

(06:29):
three time All Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey and tight end
Janew Smith, trading them from the Miami Dolphins and sending
away safety Minka Fitzpatrick and a pick swap as part
of the trade, of course, pending physicals. The Dolphins are
seeing a twenty twenty seven seventh round pick to the
Steelers and we'll receive a twenty twenty seven to fifth

(06:50):
round pick from Pittsburgh. Ramsey we got a one point
five million dollar raise this season, upping his compensation to
twenty six point twenty six point six million. The Steelers
will pay pretty much all of it except for three
million dollars, and they're going to extend Jen new Smith
one year, where twenty million dollars. Ramsey is thirty years old.

(07:12):
Jen new Smith coming off his best season yet as
a tight end eight hundred and eighty four yards with
Miami Dolphins, one hundred sorry eighty eight receptions at eight touchdowns,
matching a career high back in twenty twenty with Tennessee.
Also was named to his first Pro Bowl after being

(07:34):
in the league now for eight seasons. So on paper,
the Steelers are one of those teams going into the season.
Now you're going to talk yourself into and this happens
to millions of people every offseason. Team will trade or
sign big names. They will talk themselves into this set

(07:57):
team and then throughout the season it'll be a very
underwhelming year. Last year was a New York Jets. How
many people shove hands talked themselves into the New York
Jets with Aaron Rodgers. I did, and I think the
media will talk themselves into. Hey, Okay, you know he's
coming off Achilles, but you know NFL Hall of Fame quarterback,

(08:19):
he knows the offense, He's got Garrett Wilson and Brees Hall.
They put all this money on the offensive line, fantastic defense,
and what happens. The Jets were an absolute mockery of
a football team this past year. Now, the argument for
the Steelers, Okay, well they have a head coach Mike Tomlin.
It's not big shop Bob Sala who obviously was in
too deep as a head coach, who knows the effect

(08:42):
Woody Austin had on that franchise and has on the
franchise with his son being a big part of it.
Did you guys read the athletic hit piece on the
family after this past season. Doesn't sound like a great
organization to work for or play it for. It sounds
like a culture issue. So the Steelers Mike Tomlin, Oh yeah,
Mike Tomlin just breathes, he oozes culture. Right, But the Steelers,

(09:07):
even though they did win ten games last season, and
even though they probably will win ten games again this season,
are you going to talk yourself into Aaron Rodgers once
again just because he is Aaron Rodgers? What has he
done in the last couple of seasons since leaving Green Bay? Right?
Two years in New York? He played what one snap
in twenty twenty three and last season, you know, five

(09:29):
to twelve, And sure, you know he may have been
banged up, but twenty eight touchdowns, eleven interceptions, his completion
rating sixty three percent, which is the worst of his
NFL career since twenty nineteen in Green Bay. Only one
other season has he ever done had a worst completion percentage.

(09:50):
That was that twenty nineteen season, and that was the
last season sixty three percent, second worst of his NFL career.
His record five and twelve obviously the worst since twenty
seventeen when he only played seven games and in his
rookie year when they were six to ten. I do
not think that Aaron Rodgers is the winning quarterback anymore.
But you're gonna talk yourself into the Steelers this season

(10:12):
because of the names on this roster. You're gonna see
DK Metcalf, You're gonna see Robert Woods, You're gonna see
Calvin Austin. Defensively, got some big names.

Speaker 2 (10:20):
T J.

Speaker 1 (10:21):
Watt, Cameron Heywood, Darius Slay, JILLN. Ramsey, now Patrick Queen.
You will talk yourself into the Pittsburgh Steelers because you're
gonna draft two or three of their guys in fantasy
football this year. It's going to happen. Does not mean
the Pittsburgh Steelers are going to be a winning football
team this year. So first take, they're gonna love the

(10:41):
Steelers this year. Steelers will be up there along with
the Chiefs and the Bills and the Cowboys in terms
of the most talked about teams. But just because they
have players whose names you know, players who names you
will draft and fantasy football, does not mean they are
going to be a contender. But the league in the
media will treat it like that as so, So just

(11:02):
warning you, just warning you. When the Pittsburgh Steelers ultimately
are having a good season so far halfway through the
year and you know, might be in line for the
divisional round or winning their division, do not be surprised
when they'd lose in the first round the NFL Playoffs.
We got more to talk about here on the Craigways Show.
Up next, We're gonna here from Steve Sarkjhan as he

(11:25):
talks about his offseason. What is he most excited about
heading into the twenty twenty five season. Up next on
The Craigway Show.

Speaker 3 (11:39):
It's The Craigway Show with the voice of the Texas
Longhorns and Hall of Fame broadcast there. Craig Way.

Speaker 1 (11:57):
Just getting started here on a Monday afternoon on The
greig Way Show. Cameron Parker filling in for craig Way.
Glad to have you with us here on thirteen hundred
the Zone. Next time you're gonna hear from craig Way
will be the SEC Media Days from Atlanta, Georgia. Super
excited to be out there. I'll be out there alongside
Craig and Mike Cards from the morning kickoff July fourteenth, fifteenth,

(12:20):
and sixteenth, three day to four day event. We'll be
out there through Wednesday. Texas and Steve Sarkisian in a
select handful of players will be speaking to the media
on that Tuesday edition, So make sure you tune in
throughout the week for some great coverage and content. We're
gonna have an exclusive sit down with Steve Sarksan. We're

(12:41):
gonna play his entire what do they call it, press
conference availability, media session with the SEC media and whoever's
there on Tuesday, and also hoping to get number sixteen
QB one Arch Manning on the program as well. We
don't know who Texas will bring. My guess is it'll

(13:02):
be arch Manning, Anthony Hill, Michael taff If they bring
a fourth player, I'm gonna say DeAndre Moore Junior, but
we'll say usually it's more of the experience. Last season
it was Calvin Banks, Jade Baron and Quinn Yours, all
three who were playing in THEFL. So excited for that

(13:23):
week again. July fourteenth, fifteenth, and the sixteenth, we will
have our coverage live from the SEC medias at the
College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia. Steve Sarkeesian
doing kind of his off season media tour. He'll hop
on a handful of popular podcast at college football shows.

(13:47):
He'll probably I'm guessing he'll do Josh Pate, He'll do
Fine Bomb, We'll do a lot of good stuff throughout
the summer, including Always College Football with Greg McRoy. Maclroy, course,
you know from from Dallas, has a lot of ties
to Texas's former head coach in high school, now hed
coach at Lovejoy, So always some good Texas size are

(14:09):
McRoy of course played at Texas. Of course was the
starting quarterback when Texas lost to Alabama in the two
thousand and nine National Championship Game. But I think he's
a fantastic analyst on college football. Really enjoy listening to
the call games, really enjoy his appearances on the College
Football Countdown Show and his weekly podcast Always College Football

(14:30):
with ESPN. So he visited with Steve sarrakesan Texas football
head coach, last week, and they discussed a lot of things,
including the off season arch manning, of course, and kind
of a preview of what groups he's excited about, what
groups may have some question marks, and how he's been
able to keep his staff together with a college football

(14:54):
sport that sees so much overall in head coaches in
staffs and now starts on a fantastic job of keeping
his main coordinators in Austin. So we'll begin with McElroy's
first question to Steve Sarkisian talking about his off season
Texas coming off back to back college football playoff appearances,

(15:16):
back to back semi finals in two years, where they're
one play away from possibly reaching the college football National Championship,
and who knows what would have happened then, But of
course Texas lost to Washington. Texas lost while State this
the last season, and it's coming off a year where
they lost a double digit amount of players to the
NFL Draft. So but also an off season where Texas

(15:38):
is going in as maybe the title favorite, the favorite
odds on favorite to win the national championship. So McRoy
begins by asking Steve Sarkisian his thoughts on how Texas
is handling the off season. Admissed all of the high expectations,
especially with arch Manning at quarterback.

Speaker 4 (15:55):
You know, one, I do think, man, that's so much
early on I was and the staff the other day
of what five and seven felt like in year one,
h some of some of those tough losses and things,
and and then just the incremental growth, you know, and
won the internal growth in the program with what we
were doing and trying to change the culture because I
felt like that was one of the key issues that

(16:17):
we were having to the types of players that we
were recruiting into the program, which I think has has
grown exponentially.

Speaker 5 (16:25):
We went from a you know, a top five.

Speaker 4 (16:27):
Recruiting class three years ago, to a top three recruiting
class two years ago to signing the number one class
in the country last year. And the byproduct of a
lot of that work has been We've had twenty three
draft picks the last two years, you know, which has
been which has been the most in the country. All
the while from a team success standpoint, going back to
the college football playoffs, going back to the semi finals

(16:48):
two years and so a lot of work done and
the exciting part for me, I'm probably excited and more
excited about this team than any of those other teams.
And so, you know, a credit to our staff, to
our to our strength conditioning staff, to all parties involved.
But I also think a key component to that we're
going into year five with the same coordinators, same head coach,

(17:08):
same offensive coordinator, same defensive corridator, same spect teams coordinator,
which I think in this day and age, is rare.
I think that's the best number in the country going
on right now. So to your point, continuity playing a
part to the development of the players and the culture
that we've instilled with with the quality of players that
we're bringing in as well.

Speaker 1 (17:27):
And more in that continuity later on in today's program.
As we mentioned, but you have five years with the
same coaches with PK Kyle Flood and Jeff Banks been
with Sarks since day one, and when we're seeing that
in terms of the development on the field. So that
was the answer to the offseason. Now you heard start
talk about the five and seven year, the ups and

(17:49):
down of the first year, and I think all taxes
fans may have in that first year had their doubts
it's going to happen. Of course, when you lose to
Kansas at home and overtime by a dude that ends
up getting like an Applebee's and I old Dill, You're
gonna have some doubts about the program no matter what.
And you'll hear's Sark's answer about this question. For McRoy,

(18:11):
when was there a moment when he knew the program
was going to be all right, that it was going
to turn a corner. In McRoy, he brought up the
bo davis rant. Of course, after the Iowa State game.
I think every Texas fan remembers that some player I
forget who it was. Was it Shandy Bart, It may
have been to Fandre Sweat. That recorded recorded Bo Davis

(18:38):
basically telling players, if you don't care about winning, if
you are just here for yourself, you better enter the
transfer portal. We do not want you in this program
next season. Because remember the Iowa State game, Texas was
up in the first half. They were up in the
first half for pretty much every game during that what
four or five six game losing streak, and ended up
losing the second half. If you watch the second half

(19:00):
that game in Aims, you saw some awful effort defensively
and offensively from a lot of key players that were
going in for starters, and next season they weren't there anymore.
That ramp kind of changed the tide right in. Texas
ended up losing the next week. I believe the next
week was Kansas right before beating Kansas State at the
end of the season. Remember that game was like seventeen

(19:21):
to seventeen to fourteen, right everyone was injured. Casey Thompson
played that game without with like one hand I think
I don't remember how the card came in that game
or not, but the Bo Davis ran right infamous in
in Longhorn's lore. So mclroy brought that up and asked Sark,
was there a moment when he knew the program was
going to be all right, that it was going to

(19:42):
turn a corner?

Speaker 4 (19:43):
First of all, that was a really abbreviated, censored version
of Bo Davis that was well, we want to keep
it Peaches, you know, family show, and we just want
to make sure that I do think that was a
big moment. I really think, you know, in year two

(20:04):
when when we played Bama here and that was a
really good Bama team that went on to play for
a national championship.

Speaker 5 (20:11):
And was Bryce Young, was Jamior Gibbs.

Speaker 4 (20:13):
You know that those guys were guys were a very
good football team. We kick a field goal with about
a minute and thirty to go in the game, minute
twenty and and Bryce leads him down, he has a
big scramble and they kicked the field goal to beat
us at home. And I think maybe the previous year
or so, I think people would have been content with

(20:35):
playing Alabama that close. And when I got in the
locker room, I could get a sense and a feel
from our players that that wasn't good enough. You know,
if we want to go do what we were saying
we want to go do, we have to go win
that game.

Speaker 5 (20:50):
And we didn't win that game that year.

Speaker 4 (20:52):
And I but I really think the mindset coming out
of that game coming out of a loss, to your
point in year one, that mindset coming out of that
loss from the coaches perspective, but I thought the mindset
coming out of that loss against Alabama, you know that
in year two. It was the mindset of the players

(21:12):
that was encouraging to me that, Okay, they're thinking different now.
We were thinking differently as a coaching staff in year one,
they were thinking differently as players.

Speaker 5 (21:20):
In year two.

Speaker 1 (21:22):
That game was huge for Texas because it kind of
showed that they can compete I think with Alabama and
the Alabama's of the college football roled in a game
that arguably, you know, could have won. I think we're
going to think about that. Was it a rough in
the passer or un sportsman like penalty and the en
zone against Brian Shung? What was a safety right that

(21:45):
could have really changed the game but protected to be
able there to compete in that season, and you know
there was some up and down throughout the year. Of course,
you know that was Quinn you weres, his first season
with Texas, and you know he wasn't healthy drink throughout
the back half of that season. But Texas really changed.

(22:06):
As a fan, you can really see something was different
in year two as opposed to year one throughout the
season because that was a game I think most Texas
fans thought, Okay, Texas actually has this game, they can
win this game, and unfortunately did not work out. Greg
the Bryce Young he made some fantastic plays in that game,
but as did Texas, and of course remember when yours
went down in the first half and had the battle

(22:27):
throughout injuries throughout his entire text football career. But again,
if he stays healthy in that game, who knows. But
he did prove it. Next year in twenty to twenty three,
Texas able to beat Alabama at Brian Denny one of
my favorite football games I've ever attended, and it really
showed the culture change from year one to year three. Okay,
arch Manning, talk you guys thick of it yet, because
it's going to continue throughout this season, ill cons even

(22:51):
the next two three years. If everything goes right, it
goes accordingly for Arch Manning in his family. Okay, so
springball obviously this past weekend was a Manning passing atomy.
Macroy asked Sark here, how has Art progressed throughout spring
training as he is now the de facto QB one
for the Texas Longhords.

Speaker 4 (23:11):
Yeah, you know, I I give you know, I give
his mom and dad, his grandpa, uh and Arch a
ton of credit for how they've handled all of it.
You know, the recruiting process wasn't this big hooplah thing.
And you know, he didn't go to all the different
camps and seven on seven's. They kept it very low key.

(23:31):
They went and visited the schools that that they that
they wanted to visit.

Speaker 5 (23:34):
It wasn't like, hey, you need to get on a zoom.

Speaker 4 (23:37):
Call with Peyton and Eli and talk about the offense
and things that They went through a very natural recruiting
process and in the end, he he came to Texas
because that's where he wanted to go to school and
he dreamt of playing quarterback at the University of Texas.

Speaker 5 (23:52):
And and then when he got here.

Speaker 4 (23:55):
I give him a lot of credit because all he
did was come to work and be a great teammate.
If you didn't know the name on the back of
his jersey, you know'd say, man, that that what a
great what a great teammate this guy is for Quinn,
for the other guys in the team, the guys in
his class.

Speaker 5 (24:10):
He worked really hard.

Speaker 4 (24:13):
I think naturally, going into year two, he wanted to
play more than he played, but he knew his.

Speaker 5 (24:19):
Role on that team and when his when his.

Speaker 4 (24:21):
Number was called, Man, he did really good things for us,
you know, and he and he competed his tail off,
and you know, he's forever in the in the archives
at the University of Texas. He was the quarterback, starting
quarterback in our first SEC win, you know, in our
first SEC game against Mississippi State.

Speaker 5 (24:37):
He got put into games at some really critical.

Speaker 4 (24:39):
Moments, you know, at A and M he gets put
in you know that that that that touch first touchdown
driver he pulls it and runs for a touchdown. And
so you know, he's been exposed to some things. Naturally,
I don't think that I could have predicted a better
way for this to go, for him to where He's
grown exponentially, not only on the football field, but but

(24:59):
as a lead, as a person. I think he's ready
to play now and play at a high level, and
we don't have to go through as many growing pains.
Sure there's gonna be some, but we don't have to
go through as many because of the exposure that he got.
And I think he's earned the respect of his teammates.
You know that they know he's not playing because of
the name on the back of his jersey. He's going

(25:19):
to be our starring quarterback because he's earned it and
and that that he's ready to play, And you can
feel it. You can feel it in spring, but you
definitely can feel it this summer right now, that this
is his team and that he's that he's you know,
he's got the respect of his teammates.

Speaker 1 (25:33):
I feel like most Texas fans, including myself, you know,
believed or at least thought that. Sure. The Quinn Eewers
injury is last season sucked. The oblique injury that kept
him out of a couple of games and probably impacted
his season in terms of health wise, but it did
give arch Manning some important starting quarterback time, some important

(25:55):
reps reps that weren't against Texas Tech and a a
massive blowout in the fourth quarter. Reps on against the
UTSA or Louisiana Monroe, no offense to either program, but
reps against SEC teams, now, sure, Mississippi State, you know,
had a true freshman at quarterback and they were pretty
banged up. But still, hey, it's an SEC football game.

(26:15):
And it was, as Sark mentioned, the SEC opener for Texas,
So there was a lot of hype going into that game.
I mean, Texas fans have been counting down that game
for years. The college football role has been counting it
down for years. And not only do you get it,
you get a Manning starting at quarterback for Texas, one
of the most you know, talked about prospects since football
recruiting became what it is. You know, he got reps

(26:35):
against Georgia, bad reps, which is good. It helps the
player grow. You know, Sark talked about growing paints there.
It's going to be growing pains this next season for
Arch Manning, and there was growing paints in that loss
against Georgia when he came the second quarter and was
running for his life the entire game. You know, big
time play against A and M right, So that touchdown
was a third down or fourth down, fourth and short.

(26:56):
Incredible play And I would have loved if Arts was
able to get some more reps in the goal in
the red zone against Georgia in the SEC title game
or you know, against Ohio State in the College Football
Playoffs semi final. But it is what it is. But
the important thing is that Arch Manning has been able
to get those reps in big time games. And it's
better than him not having any reps going into Columbus

(27:18):
Ohio Week one this season, because I don't care if
who's at quarterback for Ohio State. It's a tough place
to play in and for Archs Bible to have those
reps in the past is going to pay out dividends
heading into twenty twenty five. Okay, last question before we
git the break here, staying with the Arch Manning talk,

(27:39):
Macroy asked Stark, Okay, so what has Arch been working
on the most during spring? What is he trying to
improve the most on before Week one?

Speaker 6 (27:50):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (27:50):
I think you know for US you saw last year
the deep ball accuracy is something that is an asset
of his. You know, when he played for US I
mean the shots he took down the field were really effective.
We saw the athleticism, right, we saw the legs, his
ability to use his legs to create you know, touchdown
runs and explosive plays and in some of the biggest games,

(28:13):
you know, for us, this offseason was about really knowing
the nuances of this offense and then and then really
starting to drive up that completion percentage. Right, So some
of those throws that we like to use on the perimeter,
some of the RPO game, you know, let's make sure
that completion percentage is really high with that to go
along with those deep ball throws to go along with
him utilizing his legs. Now, if you're defending us all

(28:37):
right now, you have to defend all of the field,
the shots down the field, his ability to use his legs.
But you can't neglect still the RPO game and those
intermediate throws that we've been so effective at, you know,
these first few years here, especially with Quinn. That was
a strength of Quinns. So how do we raise all
of his game up to where, man, if you're defending
our offense with arch Manning, you got you got a

(28:57):
lot to defend.

Speaker 1 (28:58):
Yeah, Obviously, the ability to connect on deep balls was
a huge part of sarks offensive philosophy, and we kind
of lost the last couple of years, right, you know.
I think last season, you know, just without really knowing anything,
I kind of felt like it was Quinn's oblique injury
that really held him back on being able to complete
deep balls. Now, maybe if he was healthy, it just

(29:20):
never was going to be there. But for Textas be
able to have the ability to stretch the field, I
mean we saw it was it utsa right, the seventy
five yard touchdown, and it was a little bit under thrown,
but still the deep ball. In his first three games
to starting quarterback, Arch had at least one completion of
fifty yards or more. That's big, and that's what Texas

(29:42):
really needs to be able to be able to stretch
the field going forward in twenty twenty five. And hey,
they do have some deep threats, some guys with some
speed that we're excited to see come August, September, in October. Okay,
more to come from Steve Sarkiston's conversation with Greg Backroy
throughout today's show. Up next Inconceivable on a Monday edition

(30:03):
here on thirteen hundred The Zone. Here we go with
our two of today's program on thirteen hundred The Zone.
Cameron Parker with you, broadcasting live from the five to
one to two in Austin, Texas here at iHeartRadio Studio
is glad to have you with us. On today's program.
First hour, we play a little bit of Steve Sarkesian's
conversation with Greg mcclroy, a lot of emphasis on how

(30:25):
the offseason went, how the team is handling expectations going
into this next season, where I think likely we'll find
Texas ranked as a number one team in the AP
Top twenty five reuse, that's what I think, one or
number two for sure. And then also some Marsh Manning talk.
So if you missed that, check it out on our
free iHeart podcast page. This search to Craigway Show or

(30:46):
thirteen hundred Zone and add it as one of your
favorite presets. Also little NFL talk, Pittsburgh Steelers making some moves,
adding John new Smith, adding Chillan Ramsey adding of course
Aaron Rodgers, and dk met caf on paper looking like
a pretty good football team. I'm not so sure. We'll
continue more NFL and NBA talk throughout this hour in

(31:09):
the next hour, but wanted to get into more Arch
Manning talk, especially from this past weekend at the Manning
Passing Academy of course held every year with Archie and
Cooper and Eli and Peyton. Arch you know, grew up
participating in it, but now as a D one college starter,
Archie arch is one of the camp counselors they called it.

(31:32):
And we had Cjfogo on from on Texas Football on Friday.
He was down there and he talked about arch meeting
with the media and attending and you know, throwing the
football around with with with other passers. We actually sat
down with the media and did a quick little media
availability and we're going to bring you most of it

(31:53):
in its entirety. It's a YouTube plip posted by c. J.
Vogel from on Texas Football, so credit to them courtesy
on Texas Football here, but year is Arch Manning's a
conversation from the Manning Passing Academy last weekend talking about
taking the reins of the offense, Ryan Wingo the offensive
line and if he has lost his student id any

(32:13):
more times, you.

Speaker 7 (32:15):
Know, having a calm demeanor of managing expectations and just
you know come out there and do your thing.

Speaker 2 (32:20):
Yeah. Well, at the end of the day, you got heard.
We're just playing a sport. We all we signed up
with this.

Speaker 8 (32:24):
This is what we do to have fun. So just
remembering that it's a fun game. How fun with your teammates.
You're out there with your best friends. They cut it
loose and have fun.

Speaker 9 (32:31):
What are some of the things you have worked on
that you're like, all right, I can improve this and
to kind of gear up for a week.

Speaker 8 (32:37):
Yeah, I think, especially in this off season, just leadership
skills and getting the guys to rally around me and
play full me and serve them. That's what I've been
working on this offseason.

Speaker 9 (32:47):
You mentioned leadership and being you know, you know, out
in front, Like, how different has that for you the
last couple of years when you used to doing that
and then well Quinn starting and now you're having to
kind of reassume that.

Speaker 8 (32:58):
Yeah, you're a little bit behind the scene and I
know I'm talking to guys one on one, but this
year it's it's nice year, full frough and be the guy.
And I'm blessed to be in this position.

Speaker 10 (33:09):
Who's standing out in the receiver room. I know some
new faces. What's in Mosley looking like live A Parker?
How's he coming there?

Speaker 2 (33:15):
Yeah, they've been having a good off season. Partner had
a really good spring. It's nice. In the addition of him,
it Wingo and Dmail look good.

Speaker 8 (33:21):
And these young guys have stepped up. Colleagues looking go
this summer, so we're fired up. We got a young,
talented group ours.

Speaker 11 (33:28):
How does that preparation going into this season where the
starter compared to last year where he got into a
few games by the time of most of your.

Speaker 2 (33:34):
Times the backup?

Speaker 8 (33:35):
Yeah, well I try to just prepare every day when
I was back up like I was a starter, so.

Speaker 2 (33:40):
It shouldn't change as much. Just now you're taking the
one reps.

Speaker 8 (33:42):
And it's been fun and I'm excited for the season.

Speaker 2 (33:45):
I can't wait.

Speaker 9 (33:46):
Family aside, who do you watch, Who do you study?
Which quarterbacks do you kind of take bits and pieces from?

Speaker 8 (33:53):
Yeah, I watched a lot of Joe Burrow and Josh Allen,
most of my guys obviously my homes, so as much
I like to take bits and pieces of.

Speaker 2 (34:01):
Everyone, and I like watching the other guys. O. They're
great players.

Speaker 9 (34:04):
Is it funny that, all right, you've you've mentioned these guys,
but you've seen them here for as long. You know
all these guys that you yeah, hustle real is I remember.

Speaker 8 (34:12):
Watching Josh Allen, who's at Wyoming here is for seventy
five yards.

Speaker 2 (34:17):
Yeah, it was it's school to see him where he's at.
And then you had the Joe Burrow look at the
shades earlier? Is that right? Yeah? You know Joe Burrow,
he's got He's got all the swag and this style.
I don't know if I've got as much soon.

Speaker 10 (34:29):
Who's a guy home a rosser right now? That maybe
we're not talking enough about going into the season, but
by the end of it'd be like a household name.

Speaker 8 (34:36):
Christian Clark looks good. I haven't seen four backs good,
so the first side at all?

Speaker 6 (34:41):
And I feel a wait, no, no free adds obviously,
but what are the one are like the consummate Austin
experiences you feel like you really get to enjoy, Like
are the restaurants that.

Speaker 2 (34:49):
You like to go to? Yeah, what do you think about?

Speaker 8 (34:51):
I love the restaurants kind of reminds you a little
bit of New Orleans that aspect, a lot of good
places to eat.

Speaker 12 (34:54):
What's your favorite going.

Speaker 2 (34:56):
On the lake. I don't know if I want to
say my favorite.

Speaker 12 (34:59):
Sorry I'm not to.

Speaker 8 (35:00):
Yeah, yeah, no, no, but uh, I mean there's a
lot of good spots. Terry Blacks is good, a lot
of good text Mex spots, massif case, I go to
Max right now, you can get wild in there.

Speaker 2 (35:10):
My brother goes to mass Lit. Yeah.

Speaker 12 (35:12):
I had mentioned MAT's a couple of times.

Speaker 2 (35:13):
Yeah, it's a it's a good sitting.

Speaker 12 (35:16):
Your dad said, you're roumin with Garrett.

Speaker 7 (35:17):
I spyre here of your impressions of Garrett?

Speaker 2 (35:20):
What do you know about Garrett?

Speaker 8 (35:21):
What do you like about He's the man? You know,
he's a coach's kid, so he knows ball. We went
to Walmart last night and got food, so he's the man.

Speaker 2 (35:29):
He's Uh.

Speaker 8 (35:30):
I'm glad I build a good relationship with him to
walk into Walmart and no one knew who you were.

Speaker 2 (35:35):
You just y'all, just work. We took a few pictures.

Speaker 7 (35:37):
But how Betty would you say? You are for everything
that's coming this year? I mean it's it's gonna be ours.

Speaker 13 (35:47):
Yeah, I think I'm ready.

Speaker 12 (35:50):
Yes, you've been really careful about your guy.

Speaker 2 (35:55):
What's what's the daily arts manic guy.

Speaker 8 (35:58):
I mean I've been trying to be here. Well, uh,
I'm trying to limit fast food a little.

Speaker 2 (36:02):
It's hard to eat it.

Speaker 8 (36:03):
Well here it's canes, it's you know, McDonald's, it's you know,
fried krab legs.

Speaker 2 (36:09):
Everything you got here. But uh and Austin, I try
to tone it down. Did you? Uh?

Speaker 6 (36:14):
What was that TQ article like where you're saying you're
nutrition see Christopher, I don't know.

Speaker 2 (36:18):
I don't really read much of the stuff out about me,
so well, what was.

Speaker 12 (36:22):
Now I interviewed you, it was like you're nutrition.

Speaker 8 (36:24):
Yeah, I mean I try to limit the fried food
cause you know, I don't know, I'm trying to eat
all I can, right, Yeah, because you.

Speaker 14 (36:32):
Did all new strategies for your student ID for keeping
it punk.

Speaker 2 (36:35):
Yeah, I know.

Speaker 8 (36:36):
So I actually ended up finding that one and then
we're all fingerprint now, so I don't have been need
What did.

Speaker 12 (36:42):
That experience tell you? What like being a student that
ut would be live and you went viral for that immedia.

Speaker 2 (36:47):
Yeah, you know that was a that was interesting.

Speaker 8 (36:50):
It was like my first week on campus, graduated early,
that's my ID. And then I got a phone call
from a FaceTime called from start saying the girl because
it can into the building. The ID, he's like, went
right into his office game with from ideas you face
something with the ID.

Speaker 2 (37:04):
I was like, great, she's good. First week going a viral.

Speaker 10 (37:07):
So did you see the fan in the stands at detail.

Speaker 2 (37:10):
Or with the flag of your own? My mom's to
be a picture of that when you're a player. Got
a flag? That was cool. That was pretty funny.

Speaker 9 (37:16):
Would you have been able to sign the I d like,
since you got a date with Panini?

Speaker 2 (37:20):
Can you would you have been able to do that? Yeah?

Speaker 8 (37:21):
Well, I mean last I went to Charleston last summer
and I think someone.

Speaker 2 (37:25):
Stole my ID.

Speaker 4 (37:26):
Actually, so I don't know where it is, Like, you're
actually like license.

Speaker 2 (37:31):
No, I got my real.

Speaker 12 (37:33):
Oh do you think there's somebody to getting into bars
as arts manning out there?

Speaker 2 (37:36):
Maybe maybe twenty one now, so it's very it's not high,
does it. Yeah? I walked in the.

Speaker 14 (37:42):
Stark's office though.

Speaker 2 (37:43):
That could Yeah, that was pretty ballsy.

Speaker 9 (37:47):
You say you don't read much, but yeah, people are
projecting you as you haven't even started, you know, week
one as a starter, but saying you could be the
number one fifth in.

Speaker 2 (37:56):
The NFL Draft next year.

Speaker 12 (37:58):
I mean, how do you process that?

Speaker 9 (38:00):
Eliminate that from your thinking?

Speaker 1 (38:02):
How do you how do you do with that?

Speaker 8 (38:03):
Yeah, I mean I really don't pay much attention to
anyone with that thing besides my coaches, my parents, and
some close friends that are tell me the truth.

Speaker 2 (38:12):
But I'm not worrying what other people think. I'm should
go out there and have fun, play my game. What
was that?

Speaker 10 (38:17):
Texas A and m run like, you know, find the
end zone, get up, you know, kind of hit the mean.

Speaker 2 (38:21):
Mug right after. It was cool.

Speaker 8 (38:24):
Once in the game, I'm just gonna do what I
can to help our team win, and that was fun.

Speaker 2 (38:29):
I got to contribute a little bit from a great atmosphere,
So it was it was cool.

Speaker 14 (38:34):
What did you make of the response to you? And
we got going in the neighborhood. Everybody loved it. But
like it is and it's gotta be fascinating. You're just
like I have to just like I'm just hanging out
with my Yeah, my dude, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (38:45):
Wingo is a great guy. He asked me to go
to the camp a few months back, and I knew
he would do the same for me, So I went
and it was cool. He's a legend down there. Everyone
all those kids want to be like Wingo. They know
his dance.

Speaker 8 (38:55):
News touched on celebrations, so it was cool to see.

Speaker 12 (38:59):
Did people were you more famous?

Speaker 2 (39:00):
There was Ryan? He was, I was. I was back seating.

Speaker 12 (39:03):
He's still to chat emails. Pizza's up emails, pizza.

Speaker 2 (39:07):
We had it. Yeah, we had it at the house
the first night. What did you think? It was good?

Speaker 7 (39:10):
It was good.

Speaker 12 (39:11):
It's a little controversial.

Speaker 10 (39:12):
I'll ask you about the offensive line and new faces.
How are they gelling in the spring? And you know,
what's one thing that we don't know about this offensive line?

Speaker 2 (39:20):
We're good. You know, it's kind of a new group
besides DJ. So it's a good group. You know, I
feel like we're really close. Toll Hudson's kind of taking charge.
I'm fired up. Can Trevor still dunk? Trevor? Trevor can
do about everything.

Speaker 7 (39:33):
You know.

Speaker 8 (39:33):
I played bass all of them this offseason. He's a
good players. Brothers really good. We're trying to get him
to Texas. So yeah, Trevor's study and a great guys.

Speaker 9 (39:40):
How much do you juggle quarnerback and I l responsibilities
and just that old World.

Speaker 12 (39:47):
How are you chilling?

Speaker 2 (39:48):
I'm trying to get all that stuff out of play
before the season.

Speaker 8 (39:51):
So obviously you want to take advantage of what you
can and make the right decisions on you know, partnering
with companies.

Speaker 9 (39:56):
But you know, I'm more focused on long How much
do you pay attention to branding, imaging, that sort of
thing like what's the right place to go to? Obviously
there's a ton of advice, Yeah, but I mean how
much do you kind of make that call say hey,
I want to do this, I do not want to
do this.

Speaker 8 (40:12):
Yeah, I kind of go with my gut and see
what other people have done and who's done it the
right or wrong way. And I got a lot of
support with my family and go with my gut at
the other day and try not to do too much.

Speaker 1 (40:24):
Yeah, good good stuff there from March main the big
takeaway besides someone's stealing his ID possibly using it as
a fake to get in the bars, which is pretty funny.
That's the funny parts manny, but him him shouting out
Christian Clark and CJ. A.

Speaker 2 (40:39):
Baxter.

Speaker 1 (40:39):
I think we're going to hear from start talk about
the running back room. But you know, we had CG
on Friday, and of course Texas in this twenty twenty
sixth class no commitments to the running back position. He
had two guys come in his last class, Gems Simon
w we've heard a lot of good things about, and
then Ricky Stewart Junior, the three star. But this running
back room, I know there's a lot of question marks,
but we're kind of curious how will it look with

(41:01):
Baxter and Clark returning from injury. Of course, Trey Wiser
coming up one thousand yard season, and then guys like
Jared Gibson, who I was super high on baby Rhino,
but you know, the staff did not really trust him
that much because of his issues with holding on to
the football, and of course Ryan Niblett. So it did

(41:22):
sinned out to me to hear him talk about CJ
and Christian Clark. So we're gonna hear more from Steve
Sarakigan on the running back room coming up next, and
also a position a group that maybe you aren't super
high on, but sarcus, that's up next. As The Craig
Way Show continues on this Monday afternoon on the free
iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 3 (41:44):
Welcome back to the Craig Way Show and the Voice
of the Longhorns Craig. Follow Craig on social media at
Horn Boys.

Speaker 1 (42:15):
A lot of good ut football talk here this Monday afternoon,
sixty one days away from kickoff between Texas and Ohio
State to begin the two thousand and twenty five football season.
We can't wait to bring you all of that live
coverage here on thirteen hundred The Zone throughout the football season,
as well as on ninety eight point one FM caved

(42:38):
Austin and Always and additionally one to three one Austin's
eighty station. Of course, our pregame show, Longhorn's Game Day,
will be live all season long two hours sorry, three
hours before kickoff. I should probably know that as the
host of the show, and we'll be live from Bevo
Boulevard with Mike Harge and Mark Henry throughout the year.

(42:58):
Gonna have special guests on this throughout the season. Of course,
Calsable Insiders, pass players, all of that good stuff to
preview every single game, and we can't wait for a
football season to be here. It feels like we were
just at AIGHTE and T Stadium. Leaving that stadium. It's
probably the saddest I've been leaving a football stadium as

(43:21):
a fan in quite some time. You know, we talked
about the Texas Alabama game. Mclroy and Sark did. The
twenty nineteen loss. That was tough, but I think we
left that game feel a little bit more hopeful, right
because that was a game I remember going in telling
my buddies the lines of touchdown, Man, I would be
taking Alabama. I don't know if this team's ready for Alabama.

(43:41):
They were, They were, and in fact, probably could have
won that game if of a couple of plays went
their way and if a couple of players could stay healthy,
including quarterback Quinn Yewbers. But leaving jer Yerld after the
Ohio State loss, when you're down there on the goal
line and could not punch it in after three plays
and a course to scoop and score a touchdown to
the seal the win for a house state, it was

(44:03):
tough leaving Joey Wold that night. But Ohio State did
go on to win the national championship, So kind of
fel a little bit better that you lost the best
team in college football, but still you're right there, right there,
as Texas was two years ago, so can Texas get back? Well,
A big part of the concern of the Texas football
team last year in the offense was the running back room.

Speaker 5 (44:26):
Right.

Speaker 1 (44:26):
The running back room and the running back game is
a big part of Sarks offense. Right, He's had one
thousand yard rusher every season in Austin. But last year,
you know, the season began with the injury to starting
running back CJ. Baxter and then freshman Christian Clark from Arizona.
He goes down with an achilles, So all of a sudden,
two of your top three four running backs are gone.

(44:49):
Who's going to be that number one running back? You
had Trey Wisner from the Sodo. Remember he came in
with John day Cook and fans were like, is it
worth bringing in Trey Wisner or taking an extra spot
so he can get John say, yeah, it was worth
it because Trey Wisner is a bulldog, incredible running back.

(45:09):
This last I mean, if you're looking for some dopamine,
just put on his highlights against A and M when
he was running dudes over the entire night. So Trey
Wisner returns. Jared Gibson, who had some good moments but
also had some moments where he kept putting the football
on the ground. You can't do that, son, So you know,
he lost the trust of the staff. I think throughout

(45:30):
the season we kind of saw that because there was
some gold line situations where it's like, hey, why is
it nine in Well, there's a chance he might fumble
the football, and the staff is around him every day
in practice, So if he's fumbling in the football games,
he's probably fumbling in practice as well. You bring in
James Simon, the true freshman, Ricky Stewart junior. So McElroy
asked Sarkisian what he thought about the death of the

(45:51):
running back room and what the pecking order could be,
and stark provides a really big update on CJ. Baxter here.

Speaker 5 (45:59):
Yeah. I mean it's to argue with what Trey Wisner
did last year.

Speaker 4 (46:03):
And I really felt like the second half of the season, man,
that guy like put the team on his shoulders in
a couple of games where we had to run the ball,
and you know, he wasn't developed into kind of the
running back stature that we wanted yet. And he's had
a great offseason. I give Trey Wiser a ton of credit.
You know, he went into spring he was bigger, he

(46:24):
was faster, he was more you know, decisive in his
running style, and that's been a huge asset for US.
I think a couple other young players that people have
almost forgot a little bit about. Jared Gibson has had
a great spring and a great slummer, and he's a
guy that had some big plays for US in some
critical games. You know, Michigan came on when Blue got
hurt and played really good football for US. Christian Clark

(46:47):
is back. He was the other guy that got hurt
in training camp. When Cedric Baxter got hurt. He had
hurt his achilles. He's had a great spring, a great summer.
So those three guys I'm super pumped about. Obviously, Cedric
Baxter's a wild card. You know, he was you know,
starting for US as a true freshman, had you know,
was poised, I thought, for a big season last year.

(47:07):
Hurt the knee, and so we've been methodical in our
approach with him. He's done everything we've asked of him
in his recovery. My thing with that is I don't
want to put him out there before he's really ready
to play. And he's giving me no reason not to
think that he's not going to be ready. But I
guess I'm being a little more cautious than most because

(47:28):
I can be knowing that, hey, I've got I've got
these three other guys in that room. I've got a
wild card and Ryan Niblett. I've got a true freshman
and James Simon. Like we have other players in that room.
I want to make sure with CJ. Baxter plays for us.
He's ready to play. It could be Week one against
Ohio State, and if he's ready, he's going to play.

(47:48):
Could it be, you know, week two, week three, week four,
could it be our sec opener at Florida. I don't know.
I know we're a better team when Cedric Baxter's healthy
and ready to go, But I'm I'm don't like I'm
in a place where, man, I need C four against
Ohio State or we're in trouble. We've got a returning
we got a rusher in Trey Wisner, who's a thousand

(48:08):
yard rusher last season.

Speaker 5 (48:09):
We got these other two guys who can play football.

Speaker 4 (48:12):
So when we get Cedric Baxter back one hundred percent healthy,
we're going to be a better team. But again, it's
it's a little bit of a luxury because I don't
feel like I'm gonna have to force him back to play,
maybe when he's not quite ready to go, but he'll
he'll tell us when he's ready, and when that time comes,
it's going to be go time for him as well.

Speaker 1 (48:29):
Yeah, it's nice to Sark and chand Scott have the
luxury to not have to force CJ backs or back
if he's not ready to go. Because the last thing
you want to do here with CJ or Christian Clark
or any running back that's injured is make them play
while they are injured, right, And I think at times
last season there was some guys that were probably banged.

(48:50):
I think Trey Wiser probably played the last half of
the year, you know, with the various different ailments and injuries,
but there was nobody else in the running back room
that could play. I mean, you know, there was a moment,
what game was it, where every running back was on
the injury report, I think except for like maybe Jayden Blew.
I mean, heck, they went out and got Felton Gardner,

(49:11):
the grad transfer from SMU, and he had that freak
injury to his eye in practice where he couldn't even
play during the season. I don't think he appeared maybe
in one game, but outside of that, you know, he
he got banged up really quickly. So it's huge for
Taxes built in week one to not have to rely
on C. J. Baxter and hopefully he can get healthy

(49:32):
quickly because you'd love to have him in conference play,
because I think tax has really missed the ability of
having that true in between the tackle runners.

Speaker 2 (49:40):
Right.

Speaker 1 (49:40):
I felt like when it was third and one or
third and goal from the one yard line, you know,
can you have that bulldozer guy in CJ. Baxter? You know,
six one two thirty two, you know, you know that's
forty pounds almost on Trey Weisner as great as as
Trey was in short yards distances, even Jared Gibson, you know,
he's listed at five to ten two or two. Stager's

(50:01):
got thirty pounds on baby Rhino and he's called baby Rhinos.
So I think Texas really missed having a running back
like that in between the tackles that could go and
get you a yard when you needed a yard, When
you needed two yards, he would get you three.

Speaker 2 (50:13):
Right.

Speaker 1 (50:13):
I don't think Texas really had that running back this
past season. I think CJ. Baxter can fill that void.
I mean, remember it's Alabama, Brian Denny. Of course we're
all gonna remember, you know, the throws to eighty Mitchell
and save you're worthy. But Texas ice the game with CJ.
Baxter running the football and especially on third down two.
So to have him back this season will be huge.

(50:34):
We heard talking about Christian Clark. We heard Arch Manning
talk about Christian Clark. I think a lot of people
are excited to see what he can do. You know,
there was a couple of comparisons to b. John Robinson.
Always ware of that. It's always like the defensive lineman
coming out of the draft and his pro comp is
Aaron donald Let's pump the brakes there, Aaron Donaldson, All
Pro defensive lineman who is a freaking aser. B Jhon Robinson,
a freaking aser, one of the best running backs ever

(50:55):
to play at the University of Texas. So maybe let's
calm down with those comps. But people we trust comptrom
the Bejon Robinson. Unfortunately we did not get to see
that last year because of his injuries. They showed him
down for the entire season, so he's scarred the play
and again with CJ. Baxter, he's cleared, but you know
Sark and Chad Scott want to take their time and
playing when he's ready to go one hundred percent. And

(51:17):
it kind of sounds like there's a fifty fifty chance
we'll see him in Columbus come Week one, but feel
good about him being able to play in conference play. Okay,
there's a running back room the other room, but the
big part of sarks offense is a receiver room. Right
in Texas this upcoming season will be without Matthew Golden,

(51:40):
they're number one wide up. We'll be without Isaiah Bond,
who was third in the team in receiving yards, and
also without Gunner Helm not a part of this questions
tight end spot. But Texas entering the season with their
top three receiving leaders now graduated to the NFL sow
So McElroy asked Sark about the running back room and

(52:01):
his thoughts on it heading into the season as Texas
prepares for Ohio State without three of their returning receivers.

Speaker 4 (52:09):
Yeah, I mean, it's hard to argue with what Trey
Weisner did last year, and I really felt like the
second half of the season man, that guy, Like.

Speaker 1 (52:18):
That's the wrong answer. How about this time here we
go start talking about the receiver room and why he's
more excited about it this season. Then you know, maybe
the normal fan would.

Speaker 4 (52:27):
Beat Yeah, I would say the front line three guys
I'm super pumped about. Like I kind of like that.
People aren't talking about a receiver corps like they half
in the past.

Speaker 5 (52:38):
It was like.

Speaker 4 (52:39):
Texas's receivers are the greatest everce Like, oh my gosh, okay,
let's tone it down a little. This year's group is
kind of flying under the radar. I think Ryan Wingo
is a budding star. Yeah, you know, he didn't get
the opportunities maybe that a couple of the other freshmen
around the country got last year. But when he got
his ops, man, he made some big time plays for
US in some big games. He's big, he's physical, he's fast.

(53:03):
You know, so what is he going to provide for arch?
I think they've got great rapport. DeAndre Moore was a
really good player for US last year and was a
really good player for US at critical moments in big games.
I mean he has a huge touchdown in the SEC
Championship game. He so in the slot what he's able
to do. And then the addition of Emmett Moseley from Stanford.
You know, here's a guy he caught fifty balls as

(53:25):
a true freshman in nine games at Stanford last year.
So those three guys are all relatively young. Wingo and
Emmett Moseley are both second year players. DeAndre is going
to be a third year player, So we like what
they bring. I think Parker Livingstone had a great spring
practice for us as a guy that is gonna can
play all three spots for us. And then we signed

(53:47):
a heck of a receiver class you know he got
coming out of high school, Callig Lockett, Jamie French, and
Dala McCutcheon. So I think the combination of all those
guys in that room and what they can do, I
feel great about that room.

Speaker 5 (54:01):
I don't feel good about it.

Speaker 4 (54:02):
I feel great about that room, probably better than most
people do on the outside. That's the beauty of being
in the building every day with these guys and the
rapport they have with Art. So that's a good room
for us. There's playmaking ability to your point. There's guys
that can play multiple positions, they can play outside, they
can play in the slot. We're a little bit more
physical on the perimeter than we've been I think will

(54:23):
block better on the perimeter, which, as you know, in
our offense is a huge component to what we do
of getting the ball in space and blocking on the perimeter.
So that room I think is poised for a really
good season, probably a little better than maybe the pundits
would think of where Texas receiver corps is right now.

Speaker 1 (54:42):
It's a really young receiver room. But you know, based
off you know Sarxandro there, he's he's quite bullish on it.
We mentioned, you know, the three leading receivers from last
year gone, Golden, Helme, and Bond. The leading receiver that's
returning is Rian Wingo and then DeAndre Moore or Junior. Now,
both those guys, you know, dealt with various injuries as well.

(55:06):
Of course, I think wing Go ended up having Lasik
eye surgery throughout the offseason. I think DeAndre Moore had
some sort of surgery as well. Those two guys who's
probably spent a lot of time working with arts in
the practice squad, and then with the twos, I feel
like they're gonna have little bit more chemistry than they
possibly had with Quinn Eyres. That excites me. Also, this
receiving class coming in, I'm is ecstatic, and I think

(55:29):
we're gonna look back maybe three four years. You know,
remember that picture from Alabama receivers. You know it was
probably like five years ago. It was let's see here,
Jared Judy, Davante Smith, Rugs and Waddle right. I think
that might be the receiver room for Texas from these

(55:51):
freshmen coming in, possibly with more we can go, plus
Jamie French, Kleek Lockett, Michael Terry Parker of Livingston. I'm excited.
Dylan McCutcheon. I think this receiver room it's very young,
but two three years from now, we're gonna look back
and be like, dang, that was a good receiver room.
How did Texas have all those guys? Plus m Mosley

(56:12):
Junior who will come in and easily be the most
experienced receiver in the room, which which is helpful for
Sark and just to have that experienced guy on the team.
So I'm curious to see how the pecking order does
shape out for Texas come this season. And you know
who has that chemistry. But you know, I thought DeAndre
Moore was fantastic this last season, and I was not

(56:33):
underwhelmed with Ryan Wingo. But it does kind of make
sense that, you know, if you if you have LASA
guy surgery, that means you can't see the ball well,
and as a receiver, it's helpful for you to be
able to see the football obviously. Okay, the other spot,
another group that I think probably has the most questions
entering the season is offensive line. Right losing all five starters.
The only you know, returner veteran guy is DJ Campbell

(56:55):
on the right side. Trevor Goosby, who played some big
snaps past season, is out there. But for the most part,
it's going to be a brand new offensive line and
it's gonna probably be a little growing pains, right, It's
probably gonna be some growing pains for the offensive line
that you know, kind of get used to working together.
It happened, It's gonna happen no matter what you have,

(57:16):
especially with five new guys on the front. So Sark
was asked about where he thinks the offensive line stands
right now after the conclusion of springball.

Speaker 5 (57:25):
Yeah, no, I think it's gone.

Speaker 4 (57:26):
Well, you know, the biggest thing we lost, I mean,
you lose a Calvin Banks, and that's a big loss.

Speaker 5 (57:31):
Let's make the mistake about it. You know, he's top
ten pick.

Speaker 4 (57:34):
I think one of the biggest things we lost was
the continuity that that group had. You know, they had
played so much football together, and it started with Jake
Majors at center. You know, he started for four years
for US at center, and so Cole Hudson sliding into
the center spot, a guy who's played a lot of
football for US the last three years, you know, has
kind of grown his way into it is just him

(57:57):
playing center now with Arch and that continuity that they have.
Dj Campbell's back at right guard. I think we learned
a ton about Trevor Goosby at the end of the season,
his ability to play bull tackle spots. When Kelvin was
hurt and when Cam Williams got hurt, Trevor Goosby was
blocking Georgia, he was blocking Texas A and M. He
was blocking Clemson, he was blocking Arizona State, all right,

(58:17):
So four pretty good teams with pretty good pass rushers
that he had to play against.

Speaker 5 (58:21):
That we learned a lot about.

Speaker 4 (58:23):
You know, we didn't have to just rely on a
spring game to figure out if he could play or not.
You know, he played in some really big moments. And
then we have some young budding stars that we feel like, man,
they're ready, you know, whether it's Nick Brooks, whether it's
Brandon Baker, you know, a guy who's been in the program,
and Nato and Mozzolo another guy who's kind of grown
up in the program. So we've got plenty of talent

(58:46):
in that room. It's getting these guys to play as one,
as one unit. And that's where Coach Flood comes into play.
And you know, we're going Coach Flood and I are
going in the year nine together from our time with
the Atlanta Falcons, Alabama and now here, and so we're
we're definitely singing, singing the same tune of where we
need to get on the offensive line.

Speaker 5 (59:07):
But it won't be because of talent.

Speaker 4 (59:08):
It's just going to be about those guys playing together
and having the confidence to do so and then having
to do it in week one. Like we don't we
don't get a couple of preseason games to get ready
to go. Right when you when you go to the
Horseshoe UH to play Ohio State in Week one. We've
got to get them ready to play, And no way
is there better to get them ready to play than
then having to block our front you know, every day

(59:31):
in practice, because our guys are really good and so
you know, to gain their confidence. So they're going to
gain their confidence by having to go against the group
that they have to go against every day in practice.

Speaker 1 (59:40):
The one name that I've heard Sark mentioned a few times,
and it's always gotta be warried. During the off season,
you know, when coaches will will shout out a player,
you know, saying he's had a really good spring or summer,
and sometimes it's obviously true, and other times it's you know,
maybe he's trying to offer up some words of encouragement
for a player. But I don't think starts bsing when

(01:00:01):
he keeps mentioning Nick Brooks. I think I've heard Nick
Brooks his name mentioned a few times his offseason. The
freshman coming in who a lot of hype, six foot
seven three and forty eight pounds. I mean, looking at
the roster, believe he is the biggest offensive lineman out there,

(01:00:22):
six seven three, forty eight Are you kidding me? That's insane?
But we've heard his name mentioned a few times and
I don't I would not be surprised if the starting
five against Ohio State is not the starting five when
Texas plays Florida, just because of so many moving pieces
and there's so much step there that a couple guys
just may end up getting you know, kind of washed

(01:00:43):
away throughout the season. But you know, it does seem like, Okay, Hudson,
Hudson and Goosby obviously on the line, we got DJ
Campbell at right guard, is you know, Brandon Baker kind
of assumed to be the starting right tackle, Umezulu at
what left tackle? Perhaps left guards use me, so you
know what, we see a guy like Nick Brooks kind
of maybe step up and take that spot. You know,

(01:01:05):
we've heard a lot of good things about Nick Brooks,
heard some good things about Jayden Chapman. So I'll be
interested to see who the starting five is the season.
But it's definitely I think the positional group that as
Sark mentioned to, we know there's talent there, but can
they all get in the same page. Can they all
be playing with the same rhythm and group, because it's
going to be a key part for Texas throughout the season,

(01:01:29):
you know, with you know, Arch Manning at quarterback, and
you know, a young receiver group and a different running
back group. You know, well with offensive line, be like
so curious to see what it looks like. In the
first couple of weeks of the season, the text line
the lack of inside sown killed us against Ohio State.
We couldn't get the edge consistently. Yeah, and it felt like,

(01:01:49):
ohow State. I don't know if their players were just
faster the Texas running backs, but I felt like they
kind of knew, Hey, there's there's no chance these guys
are getting to the outside. Let's just try and make
him beat us inside the tackles in. It just did
not happen throughout the game. Bama twenty twenty three. Wasn't
that Jay Brooks running out the clock?

Speaker 2 (01:02:07):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (01:02:08):
So, actually, thanks for the message. I went and looked back.
The final drive was all j Brooks. The drive before that,
Baxter had a big first down run. But the last
drive I remember Baxter's run for some reason more than
Jonathan Brooks. But that last drive the textas was able
to ice out the clock. It was Jonathan Brooks. He
had that he had picked up one first down. It
was third and two. They got three yards, and then,

(01:02:30):
of course I think the biggest run was the fourteen
yards run on third and seven from the forty four
yard line that I think was really the nail in
the coffin against Alabama. And then he picked up a four
yard run on third and seven, and remember Alabama committed
that offside with two minutes left. That that was the
text was able to kneel out the clock and prevent
Alabama from a last second drive to try and make

(01:02:52):
it a one score game. So again, always appreciate your messaging.
The text line text to where Texas eight one to
five three zero, followed by your message more than come
from Steve Sarkisian, including that aforementioned game against Ohio State
and also his thoughts on how good this Texas defense
can really be. It's the Craigway Show on the free
iHeart Radio app. We're back.

Speaker 3 (01:03:23):
It's the Craigway Show with Hall of Fame broadcaster and
voice of the Texas Longhards Craig Way.

Speaker 1 (01:03:35):
Okay, before we wrap up our two of today's programs,
some quick NBA notes with NBA Free Agency set to
begin in about one hour in fourteen minutes, and of
course you know, the way this works now is you're
kind of aware of all the big we have free
agency deals before that actual starting time begins with most

(01:03:58):
of these teams and agents kind of hammering out deals.
But the big one is Lebron James picking up his
player option for fifty two point six million dollars the
twenty twenty five twenty six season. Okay, you're thinking, of course,
Lebron's going to opt in here. This doesn't make any sense.
Why I seem the story, Well, usually in the past,

(01:04:22):
you know, Lebron's kind of always operated on a two
year deal, a one in one, one year guaranteed year
two a player option. This has kind of allowed Lebron
to have leverage with whatever organization he's been with.

Speaker 6 (01:04:37):
You.

Speaker 1 (01:04:37):
He did it with Cleveland, he's done it with the Lakers.
Now he's it's always been assumed he's going to stay
with Los Angeles. But you know, as he reaches forty
years old, a little bit interesting, at least to me,
that Lebron actually decides to opt into this deal instead
of signing declining it, and then signing a two year deal,

(01:05:00):
year guarantee with a one year player option like he's
done in the past seemed a little weird to me,
and I'm glad I'm not the only one that finds
this deal a little unusual. Here's Brian Windhorse, who if
anyone knows anything about anything, it usually is Brian Windhors.
And here's Windy about Lebron's unusual opt in to his
player option for twenty twenty five, twenty six on this

(01:05:22):
morning's edition of Get Up.

Speaker 15 (01:05:25):
Wait, you know what, Dan, Yeah, they haven't put out
a statement, so you know, it's not a rule that
you put out a statement announcing when a player picks
up an option, but it is customary and the Lakers
did not do that unless it went to my spam
folder and I didn't see it. Guys, I did not
see the Lakers put out a statement.

Speaker 5 (01:05:42):
He did.

Speaker 15 (01:05:43):
I had to actually check with the team in the league.
I said, did Lebron actually opt in? And they said yes,
the paperwork went through. He opted into his contract. Last
year when Lebron signed a contract extension, Rob Polinka had
about one hundred and fifteen word quote talking about how
wonderful Lebron James is and what he means to the
Lakers and he means to their their franchise yesterday. There
was no statement that the Lakers reaction to the way

(01:06:06):
this was announced.

Speaker 12 (01:06:07):
And you know, I will say this.

Speaker 15 (01:06:10):
I talked to Rich Paul, Luca Doncic was informed that
this was gonna be Lebron's decision. The Lakers were informed
that this was going to be what was going to
be said. Luca was informed, but this is going to
be said. So this didn't catch it, you know, them
by surprise. But you know, it did catch by surprise
the rest of the league because as I considered which
teams that Lebron would ever want to play for, I thought, well,

(01:06:32):
maybe there's some sort of something afoot here, and so
I went sort of team by team, and these the
teams didn't.

Speaker 12 (01:06:38):
Know that this was coming.

Speaker 15 (01:06:39):
So Luca was more aware than the potential other teams.
So again, there's something that's unusual here, and it's just
unusual for Lebron.

Speaker 2 (01:06:46):
To be in this spot.

Speaker 15 (01:06:47):
Dan he has signed nine contracts in his illustrious career.
Eight of them have had player options in them. Not
once in the eight years has he ever taken or
the eight times has he ever taken that player options,
he has always opted to sign a new contract. This
is the first time in twenty three years he's ever
been on a contract is in its last year, and

(01:07:10):
so that is a unique position.

Speaker 1 (01:07:13):
Don't know if it means anything or not, but I'm
glad to win. Horse kind of feels the same way
I do. Yeah, And his last point, he's never signed
a contract, he's ever opted in without having that extra year. So,
you know, Lebron James now twenty twenty six, twenty twenty
seven will be an unrestricted free agent, and who knows
where Lebron will be at at age forty one in
his career. But now the trade rumors are swirling. Could

(01:07:38):
the Lakers trade away Lebron James?

Speaker 2 (01:07:40):
Now?

Speaker 1 (01:07:40):
Remember, you know, big part of this, of course is
the owners, right. Remember Jimmy Buss, you know, you know,
brought in Lebron and talked about how she wanted Lebron
to have a statue. They told the team the Lakers
are not owned by the Bus family anymore, so that
tie is gone. And honestly, if the Los Angeles Lakers,
if you were really want to win now, I think

(01:08:02):
trading Lebron is probably a better move than trying to
build around him. I know he might be one of
the greatest players of all time, but at age forty
years old, I think you can do a little bit
better doing by trading Lebron and maybe getting some more assets,
because now you're looking at the future. You have Luka Dontris.
You can build for the future here. Because Lebron now
to one season is next year. He could just walk,

(01:08:24):
you know, he could walk, and Lakers could lose out
and lose an asset without gaining anything else. So something
to keep an eye on as free agency begins. In
about an hour, we'll be back to WRAB hour two
of today's program here in thirteen hundred The Zone, final
hour of today's program here on The Craigway Show, Cameron
Parker with you and glad to have you aboard on

(01:08:47):
thirteen hundred The Zone, filling in for Craigway during his
yearly sabbatical, as he calls it. Craig will be out
the next couple of weeks, but he will be back
just in time for the sec ME live from Atlanta, Georgia.
I'll be out there with Craig alongside Mike Carge from
the morning kickoff, as we'll bring you coverage from the
first three days of the SEC media Days. Excited for that.

(01:09:11):
Texas will be in attendance on Tuesday. This second day,
we're going to hear from Steve Sarkujan and players too.
Hopefully we'll get Arch Manning and a handful of other
key players. My guests, Michael Taff, Anthony Hill, and maybe
someone like DeAndre Moore Junior. But should be a real
fun event. Of course, we usually do a great job

(01:09:32):
of finding other guests to come on. I think last
season we had Fozzy Whitaker joined us, Sam Acho came on,
Paul Finebaum, and Craig Way visited. So should be a
real fun event. And looking forward to heading out to
the eight TL for all that coverage, so the state
in tune with that. Of course, if you're already listening

(01:09:52):
to us, that's one way, But make sure you follow
us on all of our social media pages too, including
on YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, instag, TikTok. We're gonna have some
great coverage here in some behind the scenes coverage and
stuff that you may not hear on the show, and
some stuff that you may have heard on the show,
but you'll be able to see it because we will
be bringing our cameras out there to capture all of

(01:10:14):
the action. So looking forward to that. We're gonna hear
more from Steve sar occasion in this hour is sit
down with Greg McRoy on the Always College Football Podcast.
Some great stuff from sark As. We are sixty one
days away from Texas and Ohio State. Hard to believe
that it's that close, but we're getting there. Just two

(01:10:36):
months away from college football less than that actually, if
you count the week zero games that will occur. So
looking forward to all of that. Okay, I'm gonna get
to some Texas football recruiting notes. Busy weekend across the
country and some big commits ended up not going Texas
his way. But we'll get into that here in just
a second. But want to give you guys the opportunity

(01:10:57):
to win some tickets. Yeah, we try to do that
every day on this program, and this week we're giving
away a pair of tickets every day to see The
ban Ghost August fourteen, twenty twenty five at Moody Center.
So to win a pair of tickets, all you got
to do just download the iHeart Radio app, tap or

(01:11:17):
rather search for thirteen hundred the zone, tap the red
microphone button, and then leave us a message with today's keyword,
and today's keyword is scary. Scary scary as in the
Texas Defense might be scary in twenty twenty five. So
do that. Make sure you go ahead and add thirteen
hundred zone in the Craigway Show to your preset page

(01:11:39):
as well. And it's the best way and the quickest
way to be able to access our program and access
the station not only for this show, but also when
it comes time for Texas football, because you know, I
know sometimes when you get in the car, you're trying
to hurry down the DKR or maybe you leave DKR
a little bit early. You want to find out, you know,
what the score is, what's happening with the game. You're

(01:12:01):
trying to pull it up on your phone and trying
to find the connection. You know, sometimes the signal sucks.
If you have the app and you have thirteen hundred
as a preset, you'll do it in about five seconds.
So I encourage you to go go ahead and do that.
If you can't, We'll be giving away more tickets to
see Ghosts later on this week, and believe Mike Cars

(01:12:21):
and Mark Cannery giving away ticket to see Lanny Wilson.
So if you're looking for a country music fixed, then
tune into the morning kickoff every day from seven to
nine am right here on this program. Okay, Texas football recruiting,
We had Cjfogo on last Friday and we talked about it.
There was three guys that were announcing their commitment and

(01:12:42):
all three ended up not going in the way of Texas,
including Xavier Quell, the four star running back from Alabama.
We expected to end up at Alabama and he has
landed at Alabama. So still zero running backs committed the
Texas in the twenty twenty sixth class, but that could

(01:13:06):
change because Justin Wells from Inside Texas has reported that
there has been a change with one possible recruit coming in.
Derek Cooper, the running back out of Fort Lauderdale in
the twenty twenty sixth class, was expected to commit July twelfth,

(01:13:27):
So in about two weeks time, that's changed. Derek Cooper
actually tweeting out today he will no longer be committing
July twelfth. The four star running back told Inside Texas,
I want to visit Texas during the season. The relationship
between Texas is being reported by Inside Texas has begin

(01:13:47):
the change here raceed recently. You know, Cooper was expected
to end up elsewhere on July twelfth when he committed,
But looks like Texas has really stepped up their recruitment.
Maybe money Bag a little bit more involved in there,
and the relationship with with Cooper and Chad Scott has
gotten a little bit tighter. And actually, according to Inside Texas,

(01:14:10):
Chad Scott that was actually set to talk to Cooper
about two hours ago on the phone. So it appears
Texas has really picked up their pursuit of Derek Cooper here. Remember,
six of the top thirteen running backs are committed to
three schools in the twenty twenty sixth class Notre Dame,
USC and UH, Texas, A and M. So I don't

(01:14:34):
know if that's going to be going the hold going forward.
Of course it's still early, but it tells you the
nil value of those three three programs that Cooper, by
the way, was Crystal Bald to Miami, but that may change.
Four star running back Miami was the lead prediction, but
now with Chad Scott getting involved, that could possibly change.

(01:14:59):
Pushing his commitment day and again that would be huge
for Chad Scott in the running back class be able
to pick up at least one running back, considering they
have zero on the board right now. Cooper, by the way,
looking at two four seven sports rankings here mentioned he
is a is a four star running back. Trying to

(01:15:21):
find his official rankings in there. He's considered the number
three athlete overall, thirty ninth rated prospect nationally, and number
six in Florida. So if you're looking for where he's at,
he will be committing later than July twelve. Okay, so

(01:15:43):
what about some other prospects here? Well, July second, there's
a couple of guys that will be announcing their commitment.
Tritton Henderson, the edge rusher from Pensacola, Florida, five star
prospect his final three Texas LSU in Florida visited Florida
and they probably the most momentum. But LSU has been

(01:16:04):
pushing hard the last couple of days right now inside Texas.
Reporting the decision going Texas way will be a little
bit harder and hard to remember. Texas, but got a
lot of prospects to commit the month of June. The
defensive line spot, so not too worried about there, and
a big reason why Kendall Gerville, the defensive tackle from
Fort Myers. He's been a guy that's been training Texas

(01:16:26):
his way. The four star prospect defensive lineman six foot four,
three point fifteen out of Fort Myers, Florida, had that
unofficial back in April. It's felt like a priority of
the Texas staff had a great official visit this past month.
Momentum is favoring Texas. He will be announcing his commitment
on July second, so that will be what Wednesday, I

(01:16:49):
believe July third, on Thursday, Cosey Okpala, another edge rusher,
will be announcing his commitment. Currently. Okpala, a four star
prospect from Katie, Texas, made Creek High School Inside Texas
reporting that it's felt like Texas has had the advantage
in this recruitment over the last year or so, with

(01:17:11):
A and M, Oklahoma and Penn State trailing the long Corn.
So there could be possibly one commitment on Wednesday and
another on Thursday. Okay, how about Friday? Could Texas got
a commitment every day from Wednesday Thursday Friday? I think so.
John Turntime, the third of the offensive tackle from North

(01:17:31):
Crowley in Fort Worth, a four star prospect six foot three,
two hundred and sixty pounds inside, looking like a guard
possibly perhaps maybe a tackle. So far, it's it's been
Texas in the driver's seat and Kyle Fled's on the
great job in this recruitment. Right now, it appears that
Texas will lead the way over Michigan and Texas A

(01:17:53):
and M. How about Keaton Finley, the receiver from Aledo.
This has been a battle between Texas and Notre Dame. Inside,
Texas are comparing him to Jayden Greathhouse, the former Westlake product,
by the way, who had a fantastic college football playoff
performance for the Fighting Irish this past season. Right now,

(01:18:16):
it looks like Notre Dame possibly is leading the way,
but we'll find out come thursd Friday rather when Philly
makes his decision. And then Bryce perry Wright, offensive lineman
out of U for Georgia. With Richard Wesley's commitment to Texas.
The five star, it appears that perry Wright will end
up elsewhere Clemson, A and M or Miami, but keep

(01:18:37):
an eye on that. And then two other notes. Three
star linebacker Calvin Thomas will announce his decision July twelfth.
This is a battle between Texas and Nebraska, and then
also later on in mid July. On July Tote as well,
it'll be four star cornerback Samari Matthews, who has moved
his decision up from late July to early July, coming

(01:19:01):
off in the visual visit to South Carolina. Samari Matthews
actually shares the same high school as me Huffy Squad
Out and Cornelias, North Carolina. It was training Texas a way,
but I think South Carolina really wowed him, and considering
he is a North Carolina native, not surprising that he
could end up in South Carolina because the Charlotte to
Austin move is a long ways away. But a few

(01:19:24):
updates there courtesy of Inside Texas to the text line.
Some great notes coming in Ohio State mentioning that Ohio
State Texas game. Ohio State the better athletes all over
the field. Yeah, and I felt like that was the
case when Texas was on offense. Right I mentioned note
about not you know, to get to the edge. It

(01:19:44):
felt like Ohio State just knew they were more athletic
and could just bow Texas up in the run game,
and they did that. Another text coming in Wisern was
money on the fifteen play all Rush against UK. He
was that game against Kentucky in A and M, or
the or two games that really stand out for me
on the Trey Weisner Fred Trey Weisner Season A and

(01:20:06):
M getting they he was just running dudes over the
entire game. Okay, So up next, we're gonna hear from
Steve Sarkisan the rest of his conversation with Greg McElroy
talking about the defense. Is it possible that Texas will
have a better defense heading into next season? Well, Greg
mcclroy asks, and Steve Sarkisian answers on the Craig Way Show.

Speaker 1 (01:20:54):
Sixty one days away from kickoff between Texas and Ohio State.
And of course you can listen to that game right
here on thirteen hundred the soone. Cameron Parker with you.
Glad to have you with us here as we continue
Monday's program, final hour of the day show. And you've
heard from Steve Sarksian during his appearance on Greg mccroy's

(01:21:16):
podcast Always College Football that you can listen to where
your podcast or also watch the episode on YouTube. And
been playing a couple of soundbites from today's show, some
good stuff from Steve Sarkishan and want to continue them
mentioned Ohio State. Well, Texas will play Withhouse State in
Week one and it continues a trend from Sark and

(01:21:36):
the Longhorns. Remember they played Michigan last year the Big House,
they played at Alabama and the year before that hosted Alabama.
Remember LSU, So Texas it's been playing these, you know,
big time matchups to begin the season. It's you know,
these were agreed upon before before Sark got the Austin

(01:21:58):
Remember they you know, had a opener against before Michigan
last year. You know, played Rise before Alabama in twenty three,
played Louisiana Mount Road before Bama in twenty two. It
was a twenty LSU was was also Week two, no
no week no, no Week one warm up game for Texas.

(01:22:18):
It's straight to Waho State. So Sark was asked about
it by Greg McRoy. A good question here, you know,
does does your summer workouts, does your spring workouts change?
A little bit. Is the intensity ratcheted up just a
little bit more knowing that Ohio State is there in
week one rather than in week two or week three.

Speaker 4 (01:22:39):
Well, I love it. And I learned a lot of
that from Coach Saving at Bama. We always had those
games right that that were coming. And you know, as
you know, you get into camp and you're doing your
installation and you're going through it and you're doing you know,
half line pass and you're doing all the drills, and
it can get monotonous at times.

Speaker 5 (01:22:58):
It can't. It's hot, everybody's tired.

Speaker 2 (01:23:00):
Man.

Speaker 4 (01:23:00):
When I got that little I can always throw that
little jab of you know what Ohio State's doing. They're
in training camp too, they're in Team Run two, right,
They're sore and tired too. And I'm sure Ryan Day's
doing the same thing about us, Like that's the beauty
of playing these games.

Speaker 5 (01:23:14):
And you know, this is three straight years for us.

Speaker 4 (01:23:17):
You know, we played Alabama in Week two here, we
went to Alabama in Week two two years ago, we
went to Michigan last year in Week two, and this
year we're going to Ohio State. So this is three
straight years that it's not going to be new for
our veteran players, having played at Alabama, at Michigan, and
now at Ohio State. I think we take a lot

(01:23:37):
of pride in preparing for those games. We take a
pride and going into those games prepared, ready to play
with the right mindset, the right physicality that's needed, and
then ultimately the right execution that's going to be needed
in a game like that. So we use it to
some degree. It's not the end all be all. This
is all training camps about, like we've got to prepare

(01:23:57):
ourselves for a grind of a sixteen seventeen game season.
But yet, man, it's sure good to have those ones
that are right at the front end of the season
to kind of kickstart you and get you ready to go.

Speaker 1 (01:24:09):
And I think no matter what happens in Week one,
especially with the expansion of the collegetball playoff, you know,
ten years ago, loser of this game, all of a sudden,
the path to making the playoff a little bit harder, right,
the path to make the national championship little bit tougher.
But you know, with the playoffs expansion, and it's probably

(01:24:29):
a big reason why CDC one of the schedule these
games is knowing, Okay, you can lose this game and
you can still be in the hunt for the playoff,
I mean, or on the plus side, you have that
win and it can be a big reason why you
make the playoff. Right, think about you know, Texas beating
Alabama in twenty twenty three, had a couple losses on

(01:24:52):
the stretch, right, but that Week two went over Alabama
at Alabama was a big reason why the committee put
Texas in. Now, I think now with the expansion, you
can lose two games this year, maybe even three, and
being then SEC opponent, you know you'll be in and
a lost to Ohiose State won't really dock you. But

(01:25:13):
you know, a win over Ohio State, you know that
that's going to leave a big impression with the committee
when it comes time to seeding. And now remember with
the seating that's happening, it's no longer the top four
you know, conference championship winners. It's the top four in

(01:25:33):
the rankings. So Texas doesn't have to win the SEC
to be a top four seed, which will play into
their favorite because last season would have been a better seat. Okay, now,
the defense defense was fantastic this past season, right, in fact,
you know, and then lost to Ohio State. It felt
like Texas was the only reason why they even stayed

(01:25:55):
in that game. While the offense had trouble moving down
the moving the ball down the field and being able
to score. Could the defense be even better in twenty
twenty five?

Speaker 4 (01:26:06):
Yeah, I mean naturally, we've adjusted a few things schematically
and personnel wise to make sure that we're trying to
get our best players on the field, right, and Colin
Simmons needs to be a starter for us.

Speaker 5 (01:26:20):
You know, last year he was always kind of he was.

Speaker 4 (01:26:22):
Rotating with Tray Moore, two great players, right, and it
was like, okay, well now we have to wait for
third down to put them on the field together. So
we've adjusted some things there. And those two guys are
tremendous players. And the addition of Brad Spence from from
Arkansas who had I think six sacs in the SEC
last year. So those three guys not only playing edge
but playing linebacker combined tremendous players. You have Ethan Burke

(01:26:46):
on the other side, who you know is again has
made some big time plays and big time games, and
now it's his time with Barons Surrell moving on with
some young players behind him, with With With with Zena,
Lance Jackson, Colton Vassik, some really good players there. The
addition of Justice Terry at strong side end. So we've
got some good players there on the edges, and then

(01:27:06):
our ability to use our backers off the edge. You know,
we've you know, Anthony Hill I think has fifteen fifteen
career sacks or something, fourteen career sacks in two years
as a Mike linebacker. That's because we're using him, you know,
on edges. And that's where Trey More can come into play.
Brad Spence and then Steady Eddie leong Laval and what

(01:27:27):
he's meant for us, and then a budding star in
my opinion, in ty Anthony Smith at linebacker. So all
those guys are kind of interchangeable because they're all going
to find ways to not only internally blitz, but edge
rush force to create one on one matchups.

Speaker 1 (01:27:41):
I'm super excited about this defense this season. You know,
of course, they like they lost everybody on the interior
defensive line, but then you know Sark and Kenny Baker
go out in the portal, grab Travis Shawl, go out
and grab Colbrivard go out and grab hero canoe feel
pretty good. Plus, you know you brought in three guys

(01:28:03):
from this last class, just as Terry uh who we've
heard a lot about, Josiah Schwarma, Aaron Charles so in
the edgepot and CJ. Vogel from on Texas Football. You
know you put up that tweet his top ten professional rankings.
He had edge at number one, you know, with Colin Simmons,
with Ethan Burke, Colton vasek Umil Zulu, Colin Simmons, Lance Jackson,

(01:28:28):
the freshman coming in, you know, expect him to play
a little bit so and you heard Sark talk about it.
You know, Colin Simmons didn't wasn't on the field every
play and that was just kind of you know, Sark
wanted to get the best players out there as possible,
and there were some situations where Simmons was on the sideline.
You expect to see Simmons out there a lot more

(01:28:48):
in another year. Development. I'm super excited about what Number
one can do on the football field. Okay, PK's defense, right,
it has evolved since his time at Washington and Greg
mccroy want to ask Sark about the evolution of PK's defense.

Speaker 4 (01:29:05):
Yeah, I to your point, I think so, And I
give PK a lot of credit for evolving that way.
And I think we've been allowed to evolve one the
personnel at the line of scrimmage has been helpful, but
also I think the personnel in the back end has
been helpful. We're allowed to do more things coverage wise,
We're allowed to play stickier and coverage play a little
more man coverage, you know, given given our guys the

(01:29:28):
freedom to go ahead and go rush, adding an extra
element in the box to where you know, we're able
to play one gap defense and turning guys loose and
letting him letting him go rush and go get after
the quarterback create more turnovers. But I think it's a
byproduct of PK evolving and and and his credit doing that,
but also bringing in talented players not only at the

(01:29:49):
line of scrimmage but in the back end, and those
two things tying together.

Speaker 1 (01:29:53):
And last question for sar care from Greg mulcroy. You
cred it in his first answer earlier in today's show
talking about the staff continuity and being able to keep
his coordinators, and we see, you know, we saw with
Ohio State this past year, right, losing their o C
in DC after a national championship run. How will the

(01:30:14):
buck Eyes look come next year? And it's it's definitely
an advantage for Texas going into hostile territory. The face
of the team, no matter how many five and four stars,
you have, the face of the team that will have
a different OC in a different DC under Ryan Day.
And I think you know, we heard a lot of

(01:30:35):
over the past couple of years. You know, there was
a lot of murmurs about Ryan Day and his his
what's what's the right term his safety in Ohio State.
Who's he going to keep his job or not? And
he went out and made a couple of great hires.
You know, member Chip Knowles from Oklahoma State ends up
being the d C. He was fantastic, But you know

(01:30:57):
he's poached away the loser offensive coordinator as well. All
of a sudden, I would say, it's goint of replace,
you know, pretty much the brand new offense and defense
along with their coordinators. It's tough to do. We saw
it kind of bite Nick Saban in the butt, right.
Even as great of a head coach Nick Saban was,
you know, he was losing his oc his DC is
janitor every year and you know what, you know, I

(01:31:19):
think by the end of it, you know, it's one
of the reasons why you know, Nick was ready to
get out of coaching. Alongside you know, the nil and
the transfer portal in the change of college football. He
had a different staff every year. It's hard to keep winning, right,
It's hard to keep up with the expectation. Somehow Steve
Sarkisian has been able to do it.

Speaker 6 (01:31:37):
Now.

Speaker 1 (01:31:38):
Of course, he's lost his fair share of guys talking
to talk about running back room in Chad Scott, He's
lost Dan Drayton, he's lost to Shard Choice, to the
Detroit Lions. He's brought in Chad Scott, Loos Bo Davis,
brought in Kenny Baker. You know, it's a fantastic hire.
And he's lost, you know, Brendan Marion, you know he's lost.
You know, guys to head coaching job like Nevada. For

(01:32:01):
some reason, I can't remember his name was the top
of my head, Johnny Ansen.

Speaker 2 (01:32:04):
There we go.

Speaker 1 (01:32:06):
But guys like Kyle flood In, people Kowski Jeff Banks,
they for sure they have had opportunities to go somewhere
else and in lant a head coaching job or maybe
you know Jeff Banks an O C job or DC
job somewhere else. But they've stayed so far, and it's
been five years that those three guys have been with
Steve Sarkisian. That's very odd in today's realm of college football.

(01:32:30):
I mean, you guys, remember Texas had a new offensive
coordinator every year. It felt like from twenty ten to
twenty nineteen, who was calling plays? Who was the new OC?
Who knew because every year it was a it was
a different member. When Charlie Strong, it was flying up
to Tulsa, Oklahoma to nab the Tulsa play caller. That

(01:32:52):
didn't go too well, did it. But Texas has been
able to keep coun Flood and keep PK and keep
Jeff Banks alongside Steve Sarkisian for five years and Greg
McRoy as Steve Sarkisian on his ability to keep those
guys in Austin, I'd like.

Speaker 4 (01:33:06):
To say, I'm a great guy to work for Greg
an assistant coach man. It's like, you know, half day here,
take it the week off there, and all that. But
I think everybody does that stuff, you know. But but
again I try to treat these guys well. I appreciate
Chris del Connie and the and the resources that we're
able to provide our assistant coaches to get them to stay.

(01:33:27):
You've been around Austin enough. It's a great place to.

Speaker 5 (01:33:29):
Live, you know. You know, it's a lot of people
have to go on vacation.

Speaker 4 (01:33:32):
We can kind of staycation here, whether it's Lake Travis,
Lake Austin, you know, Barton Springs, downtown.

Speaker 5 (01:33:39):
There's so much to do.

Speaker 4 (01:33:41):
But in the end of the day, we're all better
coaches when when we can coach better players. Uh and
and I think that was something I learned from coach
Saban as well. And so these guys all have an
opportunity to coach really good players in a in a
great city.

Speaker 5 (01:33:55):
I think their families love it.

Speaker 4 (01:33:57):
A lot of their kids go to school here at
you Tea right now, and so at the end of
the day, I think we've created a good environment for
them too. As much as our culture has helped our players,
I think our culture has helped our coaches as well.
And you know, it's it's it's always fun to win,
you know. For samey say, it's all the time. Winning
is fun.

Speaker 2 (01:34:16):
Like that.

Speaker 5 (01:34:17):
That's the fun part about Alabama.

Speaker 4 (01:34:18):
Well you know, now that we're winning some games around here,
that part's fun too, and.

Speaker 1 (01:34:24):
It starts on a good job of keeping those guys,
but also when they lose guys making pretty good hires.
You know, I think a lot of Texas fans are
not happy with Chad Scott. He's been here for a
couple months, guys, and trying to come in during the cycle.
That's real tough to do. But you know, remember Katy
Baker last year and what he's done now phenomenal higher

(01:34:45):
so what it looks like, and you know, Sark did
find the shark choice and trust him and give him
the benefit of the doubt with the hire of Chad Scott.
But it is tough, you know, replacing these guys. You're
in and you're out, but it is huge for taxes
to build to keep guys like how flood In, PK
and Johnny Banks. The text line, we may be having

(01:35:06):
some technical issues, so apologies for that. Our engineers are
aware and are working on it. So if you lose
our signal, give it a few moments. Hopefully'll be back up.
We are broadcasting live on YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook. And
that signal has been steady Eddie the entire show. So
another avenue there, another text coming in. Ohio State will
basically be like Michigan last season, lots and loss for

(01:35:28):
replaced but a Natty in Tel Yes, spot on. I think,
very similar situation. I don't know what to expect for
Ohio State. I'm sure their fans, you know, have an
unrealistic expectation. But considering the pieces, I mean, replacing what quarterback,
both running backs. You're returning Jeremiah Smith, but a book

(01:35:50):
is gone. Their entire offensive line's gone, their entire defensive
line is gone. Caleb Downs will be back, It'll be
an All American, jeremih Smith will be an All American.
But it's going to be a real, real tough here
for our state. Now, of course, with forty teams in
the playoff, well they can still make the playoff. But
I think catching Ohio State week one is huge for Texas,

(01:36:13):
just like catching Michigan in Week two was because Michigan
didn't know their quarterback was Remember, we were trying to
be like oh alex Orgy, who didn't throw a single
pass before the first before that game. Okay, put him
in yeah, put it. Once Texas scored that first touchdown,
the game was over. With Michigan didn't have offense. Now,
I think Ohio State with Jeremiah Smith, I mean, with
him on the field, it's still a threat. But hey,

(01:36:36):
I thought text did a fantastic job of shooting now
Jeremiah Smith. The problem was the offense for Texas just
couldn't get going. And if Texas could be a little
bit more consistent offensively in that game against Oho State,
who knows, we could be talking about Texas Notre Dame
Texas National championship. But Texas offense struggled. Run game was

(01:36:56):
not there. So that's just part of college football. That
top to Oho State. But I think Texas is very
fortunate to be able to catch a house state week one.
But also the argument for Texas the same thing. Brand
new quarterback, losing your three returning losing your your three
leading receivers for the NFL Draft, including Gunner Hill, Matthew Golden.

(01:37:17):
I say, a bond, brand new offensive line, losing some
key pieces in the secondary, Andrew mccouba, Johnny barn, a
handful of other guys on the defensive front, Alfred Collins.
But I think Texas, despite losing those guys, is in
a better position. And hey, I'm glad we're playing Ohio
State week one versus you know, week five or six.

(01:37:39):
They will be a better team come the end of
the season versus the beginning. Okay, that was Sarks interview
with Greg McRoy again. If you missed it, check it
out on our iHeart app, free to download, free to
listen to on demand. Just search the Craigway Show on
the free iHeart app and just look to the podcast
page to come here on the Monday edition of The

(01:38:02):
Craigway Show. Okay, if we were out up today's program,
want to get back to more Arch spanning in his
media availability from earlier as passed week in the Matting
Passing Academy in case those of you who did not
hear it would like to hear it once again. So
here is Arch Bending talking about taking the reins of
the offense players who are standing out in the spring,

(01:38:25):
the offensive line, and oh yeah, his favorite spots to
eat in Austin out.

Speaker 7 (01:38:31):
You know, having a calm demeanor, managing expectations and just you.

Speaker 14 (01:38:34):
Know, coming out there and doing new thing.

Speaker 8 (01:38:35):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:38:36):
Well, at the end of the day. You gotta heard.
We're just playing the sport. We all we signed up
with this. This is what we do to have fun.

Speaker 8 (01:38:41):
So just remembering that it's a fun game, have futh
your teammates are out there with your best friends, they
kind of loose and have fun.

Speaker 1 (01:38:47):
What are some of the things you have worked on?

Speaker 9 (01:38:49):
Then you're like, all right, I can improve this and
to kind of peer up for weekly.

Speaker 8 (01:38:53):
Yeah, I think especially this off season, just leadership skills
and getting the guys to ride around me and play
full of me and of them.

Speaker 2 (01:39:00):
That's what I've been working on this offseason.

Speaker 9 (01:39:02):
You mentioned leadership and be you know, you know out
in frontly. How different has that for you the last
couple of years when we used to doing that and
then well Quinn starting and now you're having to kind
of reassume that.

Speaker 8 (01:39:13):
Yeah, you're a little bit behind the scenes starting and
you talk to guys one on one. But this year
it's it's nice, you know, full front and neely guy.

Speaker 2 (01:39:22):
And I'm blessed to be in this position.

Speaker 10 (01:39:25):
We're standing out receiver. We know some new faces.

Speaker 2 (01:39:27):
What's in it?

Speaker 10 (01:39:28):
Mosley looking like live A Parker? How's he coming there?

Speaker 2 (01:39:31):
Yeah?

Speaker 8 (01:39:31):
They've been having a good off season. Parker had a
really good spring. It's nice in the addition of him
and Wingo and Demail look good and these young guys
have stepped up colleagues looking go this summer, so we're
fired up.

Speaker 2 (01:39:41):
We got a young, talented group.

Speaker 11 (01:39:43):
Harsh, How does that preparation going into this season where
the starter compared to last year.

Speaker 5 (01:39:48):
We got into a few games, but it's.

Speaker 2 (01:39:49):
Spend most of your times the backup.

Speaker 8 (01:39:51):
Yeah, well, I try to just prepare every day when
I was back up like I was a starter.

Speaker 2 (01:39:55):
So it shouldn't change as much. Just now you're taking
the one reps.

Speaker 8 (01:39:58):
And it's been fun and I'm excited for the season.

Speaker 2 (01:40:01):
You can't wait.

Speaker 12 (01:40:01):
Family aside, who do you watch?

Speaker 2 (01:40:04):
Who do you study?

Speaker 1 (01:40:05):
Which quarterbacks? Do you kind of take bits and pieces from?

Speaker 8 (01:40:08):

New strategies for your student idea for keeping it close.

Speaker 8 (01:42:52):
So I actually ended up finding that one and then
we're all fingerprint now, so I don't have been.

Speaker 6 (01:42:58):
What did that experience tell you? What like being a
student ut would be like when you went viral.

For that immedia?

Speaker 2 (01:43:03):

from a face time called from Star saying the girl
because they can get into the building the ID he like,
went right into his office game with your ID.

Speaker 2 (01:43:19):
He faced something with the ID. I was like, great,
she's a good first week And I went to viral.

So did you see the fan in the stands at
detl Or with the flag of your own?

Speaker 2 (01:43:27):

arts manning out there?

Speaker 10 (01:43:52):
Maybe maybe twenty one now, so it's very it's not high.

Speaker 14 (01:43:57):
I walked in the socks office thought that could Yeah, that.

Speaker 2 (01:44:00):
Was pretty ballsy.

Speaker 9 (01:44:02):
You say you don't read much, but yeah, people are
projecting you as if you haven't even started, you know,
week one as a starter, but saying you can be
the number one fifth in the.

Speaker 12 (01:44:12):
NFL draft next year. I mean, how do you process that?
Eliminate that from your thinking.

Speaker 2 (01:44:17):
I mean, how do you how do you do with that?

Speaker 8 (01:44:19):
Yeah, I mean I really don't pay much attention to
anyone with that thing besides my coaches, my parents, and
some close friends and some of the truth. But I'm
not worrying what other people think. I'm should go out there,
have fun, play my game.

Speaker 2 (01:44:32):
What was that?

Speaker 10 (01:44:33):
Texas A and m run like, you know, find the
end zone, get up, you know, kind of hit the
mean mug right after.

Speaker 2 (01:44:38):
It was cool.

Speaker 8 (01:44:40):
Once in the game, I'm just gonna do what I
can to help our team win, and that was fun.
I got to contribute a little bit from a great atmosphere,
so it was it was cool.

Speaker 14 (01:44:50):
What did you make of the response to you?

Speaker 2 (01:44:52):
And we got a guy in the neighborhood. Everybody loved it.

Speaker 14 (01:44:55):
But like it is, it's gotta be fascinating. You're just
like hap to, just like I'm just hanging out with
my yeah, my dad.

Speaker 2 (01:45:01):
Yeah, Wingo is a great guy.

Speaker 8 (01:45:02):
He asked me to go to the camp a few
months back, and I knew he would do the same.

Speaker 2 (01:45:05):
For me, so I went. It was cool. He's a
legend down there.

Speaker 8 (01:45:08):
Everyone all those kids want to be like Wingo. They
know his Dance News, Touchdown, Starations.

Speaker 2 (01:45:13):
It was cool to see.

Speaker 12 (01:45:14):
Did people were you more famous?

Speaker 2 (01:45:16):
There was right? He was, I was, I was back seating.

Speaker 12 (01:45:18):
He's he stole to chat emails. Pizza, he's up pizza.

Speaker 2 (01:45:22):
We had it. Yeah, we had it at the house
the first night. What did you think? It was good?
It was good.

Speaker 1 (01:45:26):
It's a little controversial.

Speaker 10 (01:45:28):
I'll ask you about the offensive line and new faces.
How are they gelling in the spring? And you know,
what's one thing that we don't know.

Speaker 2 (01:45:34):
About this offensive line? We're good. You know, it's kind
of a new group besides DJ. So it's a good group.
You know, I feel like we're really close. Paul Hudson's
kind of taking charge and I'm fired up. Can Trevor seltunk? Trevor?

Speaker 8 (01:45:47):
Trevor can do about everything? You know, I played basket
all the this offseason. He's a good players brothers really good.
We're trying to give him to Texas. So yeah, Trevor's
studying a great guy.

Speaker 9 (01:45:56):
How much do you juggle cornerback and il responsibilities and
just that old course, how do you job?

Speaker 8 (01:46:04):
I'm trying to get all that stuff out of it
before the season, So obviously you want to take advantage
of what you can and make the right decisions on
you know, partnering with companies.

Speaker 2 (01:46:12):
But you know, I'm more focused on fall. How much
do you pay attention.

Speaker 9 (01:46:17):
To branding, imaging that sort of thing like what's the
right place to go to? Obviously there's a ton of advice, Yeah,
but I mean how much do you kind of make
that call?

Speaker 1 (01:46:26):
So, hey, I want to do this, I do not.

Speaker 2 (01:46:27):
Want to do this.

Speaker 8 (01:46:28):
Yeah, I can kind of go with my gut and
see what other people have done and who's done it
the right or wrong way. And I got a lot
of support with my family and go with my gut
at the end of the day.

Speaker 2 (01:46:37):
And I'm trying not to do too much.

Speaker 1 (01:46:39):
Arch Manning speaking of the Manning Passing Academy, talking about
