Speaker 1 (00:06):
Back to the Craig Way Show. Connect with Craig through
the Text Lige by text Team Texas to eight one
five three zero followed by your message. Standard message and
data rates may apply. Now, that's if you want to
text the program, and we're always always happy to get
the text from you. I have had some trouble today
(00:26):
supporting my laptop on this laptop, stand sure get that
back up again. It's fallen twice now because I kind
of keep it on the ledge a little bit. Anyway,
We're always glad to get the text from you, so
feel free to do that. However, as we mentioned, if
you want a shot at winning a pair of tickets
(00:49):
to Saturday season opening game for the Longhorns, as Texas
will be hosting Colorado State, than what you need to
do is participate via the talk back feature. So you
go to AM thirteen hundred zone dot com on the
iHeartRadio app. Make sure you have that iHeartRadio app downloaded
(01:09):
onto your smartphone. If you don't, just download it if
you don't already have it. It's really easy to do
and it's free, so there's no problems, really easy to do.
You download it onto your iPhone or Android whatever, and
then you just enter AM thirteen hundred zone. It pops
right up. You go to that and there's two buttons
on there, a white one where you can just click
the microphone or a click to listen to the show.
(01:31):
And then there's a red button with a little white
microphone in it. That's the button you push to leave
us a message via talkback. You do it with your voice.
You leave us a message, and don't go over thirty seconds,
so it'll disqualify you there, it'll cut you off, but
just leave us a message of under thirty seconds. And
the topic today is, since we're at season opening week,
(01:55):
your memories of your first ever Longhorn football game at
home at DKR Texas Memorial Stadium. Here's an example of
somebody else who just sent this in a few moments ago. Craig.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
It was September thirteenth, nineteen ninety seven. I had just
moved to Austin a couple of weeks before. I was
fired up to go see the Horns for the first time.
I took a girl that I had met that night.
It was one hundred and thirty eight thousand degrees and
Cave mcdown and Skip Hicks sent us home halfway through
(02:32):
the second quarter rout sixty six.
Speaker 1 (02:36):
Oh, he's right, he wass September thirteenth, nineteen ninety seven.
And it was it was. It was hot during the afternoon.
It was an afternoon kick. Skip Hicks cave mcdown. It
was bad. It was bad, and Texas went on to
the four and seven season. But hey, if that had
(02:57):
happened hadn't happened, who knows if they would have made
a coaching j And when they did, in came Mac
Brown and the fortunes of Long Horn football changed that.
So that's just something to bear in mind there, even
as you remember how difficult that day was for all
of us who were there, We remember that one very well. Hey,
(03:18):
some more comments from Long Worn's head coach Steve Sarkisian
speaking of the heat. It's it's gonna be hot as well.
This was a question I put to Will Matthews when
he joined us during our Long Worn Monday hour from
eleven to noon, and I said, you were a player,
(03:39):
you trained in this heat. These guys have been training
in this heat, and how well does it equip you
for the coming season. He gave a pretty good answer
on that, and Sark was also asked a very similar
question about where their lessons learned about how this football
team deals but they eat.
Speaker 3 (03:57):
I think, I think definitely defense, we we'll keep the
same what we did. I think last year in the
first half of the Rice game, we might have played
thirty two or thirty three players on the defensive side
of the ball in that first half alone, and so
playing multiple players on the defensive side of the ball
I think will be big. I think inevitably, what we've
learned from an offensive perspective coming out of the Rice
(04:19):
game is whatever's on tape probably isn't what we're going
to see. Colorado States had nine months to get ready
to play US, and so we're going to see things
that aren't anywhere on tape, and we're going to have
to trust our training and execute our plays regardless of
what the looks that we could be getting. And so
I think that that's important. But I also think offensively,
(04:39):
us playing more players I think will be beneficial to
us as well.
Speaker 1 (04:43):
Yeah, it certainly does help for that. Now, there's a
lot of excitement about this game fans media, not necessarily
just because of it being Colorado's stake, but it's starting
the season, getting this brand new season in a brand
new league and a new era in long worn football
being established with them going into the Southeastern Conference. So
(05:06):
he was asked about it. Do you have to manage
the excitement of your players and keep it compartmentalized to
a certain extent as they get ready for the game.
But Sark's all about the excitement.
Speaker 3 (05:19):
Yeah, I mean, our players are excited, you know, Roger,
These guys, like I touched on this even when we
got back from the Sugar Bowl last year. This is
a very hungry football team and they have worked extremely
hard and they have pushed one another. They've held each
other accountable, they've picked each other up, they've been driven,
(05:39):
they've been focused, and so now that here's their first
op to take the field that I think our players
just want to maximize it and they want to go
for it. But on the flip side, they also want
to enjoy it.
Speaker 2 (05:50):
You know, we don't.
Speaker 3 (05:51):
We only get so many opportunities to play in DKR
in front of one hundred thousand people. It's not like
it's an everyday occurrence for us. So it's exciting for
us too looking forward to it. Our players are looking
forward to it is probably as much and more than
the fans are, quite frankly, and so I think they're
just excited and and part of that is controlling our
emotions a little bit. You know, this is this is
(06:12):
an emotional game, right, and we want to play with emotion.
We just don't want to get emotional and because that's
when we can get out of character. And that's something
that we kind of have to harness, especially early.
Speaker 1 (06:23):
In the all right, early in the ballgame. It certainly
is something they want to harn us there. And then
finally he was asked about the latest addition to this
long worn roster. Velton Gardner is a grad transfer running
back started his collegiate career at Kansas, but most recently
(06:43):
had a SMU and transferred in and Sark was asked
about Velton Gardner and the recent addition of Gardner to
the long worn roster.
Speaker 3 (06:51):
Yeah, so, Velton Garner has joined us from SMU as
a grad transfer. He was a guy that that you know,
we had to wait to see if he was going
to graduate and if he could get it all done.
And he really kind of fits the mold of the
style of backs we have right now. Really versatile guy,
natural running ability, very good hands out of the backfield.
(07:13):
So I think that the transition for him coming to
our system fits well and bodes well with kind of
the other the other three guys, with the addition of
Ryan Nibblett doing some things for us back there as well,
So he just kind of fits the mold and so
it's an easy transition for us and for him. Obviously
he's got a lot of experience, you know, and he's
a veteran player that way.
Speaker 1 (07:33):
So glad we were able to do that.
Speaker 3 (07:35):
And I know everybody keeps wanting to complain about the
transfer portal, but I'm one that's gonna say, appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (07:40):
Glad we have it.
Speaker 3 (07:41):
We were able to get a free agent here right.
Speaker 1 (07:43):
For the season, So yeah, happy to have him, no
question about that. All right. Coming up, we'll take more
of your submissions there through the talkback feature there on
the iHeartRadio app. If you're interested in winning a pair
of tickets to Saturday season opener between Texas and Colorado State,
we will give away those tickets right near the end
(08:07):
of the program, so you still have some time. If
you haven't downloaded the app yet, you can download the
iHeartRadio app to your smartphone. Really easy to do. Then
you go to AM thirteen under the Zone and then
leave us a message no longer than thirty seconds. If
you top thirty, it'll cut you off and that'll disqualify you.
So leave us a message under thirty seconds, memories of
(08:28):
your first Long Worn football game at home, first time
you ever went to see the long Worns play at
DKR Texas Memorial Stadium, and the best answer at all
this is going to win a pair of tickets to
Saturdays season opener. We'll be back to wrap up our
number two of the program right here on Sports Radio
AM thirteen Under the Zone and on the iHeartRadio app
