Speaker 1 (00:05):
It's the Craig Way Show with the voice of the
Texas Longhorns in Hall of Fame broadcaster Craig Way. It's

(00:27):
a Monday afternoon here on sports Medio AM thirteen hundred.
The zone name Longhorns Monday, as we recap the Texas
Longhorn game every week. Good dad, whatever it might be,
in this case, it was not desirable at least certainly
from the Longhorn perspective. By the way, also, as as always,

(00:50):
we will be happy to access your texts to the program.
So if you want to text us, feel free to
do so. Text the word Texas follow by your question
or comment to eight one five to three zero. So

(01:11):
just text the word Texas followed by your question of
comment to eight one five three zero.

Speaker 2 (01:17):
Standard messaging and data rates may apply.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
For example, one person textan said Texas took a dive
last Saturday against Georgia.

Speaker 2 (01:25):
They will get.

Speaker 1 (01:26):
Killed by Vanderbilt this Saturday fifty eight to three. Their
fans will resort the violence like they did against Alabama.
The Vanderbilt fans will not be punished for throwing bottles
on the field. Is an A and M fan or
just somebody having fun with it. Yeah, I don't know,

(01:49):
I don't know. It's okay, though, listen, it's probably good
to have some human There were some humor in the
press conference today.

Speaker 3 (01:57):
Good fives from I thought Sark and the players afterwards, Yeah,
there was not the sky is falling feeling that if
you go on Jenny Master's board or read social media,
it does appear that the sky is falling according to
the Texas fan base. Did not get that vibe from
the players and coaches.

Speaker 1 (02:13):
Yeah, yeah, okay, anyway, and that by the way, that
text was to the morning Kickoff crew this morning, to
my cardball heart and to Mark Henry. But I thought
it was funny enough to offer it up again. So anyway,
that's an that's an example. If you want to text
this your your thoughts, your questions, or comments, feel free

(02:35):
to do so. All right, let's get to the news
conference stuff itself. I'm gonna start off with some things
that really get into some detail from Loghorn's head coach
Deep Sarcasan.

Speaker 4 (02:44):
Alrighty, a couple of things to recap from this weekend.
I think, first of all, Longhorn Nation, what support we
got this weekend.

Speaker 5 (02:52):
It was incredible from from.

Speaker 4 (02:54):
All day long, from game day all the way through
the final whistle.

Speaker 5 (02:58):
Can't thank y'all.

Speaker 4 (03:00):
You know, when you look at the game, there's a
ton of things to look at in this game that
contributed to us not winning the football game. I mean,
you can really them converting those four turnovers into seventeen points.
You can look at us generating three turnovers defensively, also
only converting that into seven points. So so right away

(03:22):
we're at we're at ten point deficit. Not to mention,
it's the number one stat in football, and winning and
losing is a turnover battle. I think four pre snap
penalties offensively, two substitution airrors defensively to where we had
to burn two timeouts in the first half, two holding
penalties on special teams. I think all those types of

(03:43):
things led to you look at the average drive start
in the first half. You know, Georgia's average drive starting
field position was the forty seven yard line for their
nine possessions in the first half started in our end
of the field. Our average drive start position was a
twenty three yard line, and three of our first four
and started inside of our own thirteen yard line. So
it's a lot easier to score when you're closer to

(04:04):
the end zone and we had a long way to go.
They had a short way to go. I think that
that contributed quite a bit to that. You know, I
will say in the second half, I was really proud
of our players. They played better football. We played hard,
we played with great effort. But the key to the
drill when you're playing in games with with quality people

(04:26):
on both on both teams, effort is one piece of
the ingredient. Execution is the other piece of the ingredient,
and we just did not have great execution Saturday night.
Most notably, we didn't have great execution at critical moments
when you start thinking about third down and fourth down.
I think we were two of fifteen on third down.
We were one of five on fourth down when our

(04:49):
execution was was needed.

Speaker 5 (04:51):
You know, in the red zone. Defensive We've been so
good defensively.

Speaker 4 (04:55):
In the red area and then they had a lot
of opportunities, but three of five for touchdowns in the
red area when we needed that execution, it just wasn't
quite as good as we needed it to be. So,
you know, the turnovers definitely play a part. Uh the
sacks play apart, and that's everybody. You know, that takes
all eleven. That's the offensive line, the running backs, the
tight end, the quarterback, and the receivers to understand the

(05:15):
timing of the play. So as a whole, as a team,
you know, we we expect better, We expect to play better,
we expect to to play to the standard.

Speaker 5 (05:23):
Uh, and we will.

Speaker 4 (05:24):
And so you know this is uh, you know, as
as I told the team, I'd much rather get knocked
down in the sixth round than get knocked out in
the twelfth round. And so we got to get up
off the mat. We got to get back to work
the way we know how to do it, which we
will do. We'll fight like crazy and and we'll make
this a twelve round fight for the season. And UH
looking forward to the opportunity to go do that, uh,

(05:47):
to prove what we're capable of. As far as this
week's game, it's a very good Vanderbilt team. And uh,
these guys are you know, Coach Lee's done a tremendous
job building this program.

Speaker 5 (05:57):
He's in year four.

Speaker 4 (05:59):
They've done a nice job of one building within but
also in the transfer portal. They're playing really stout run
defense that they're they're committed. They're disciplined to defending the run,
they create turnovers on the flip side. They run the football,
they burn a lot of clock. They lead the conference
in time of possession, they lead the conference in third
down conversion rate. They only have two turnovers on the year,

(06:22):
which leads the SEC. And you know, they're really efficient
and so they play really, really good, complimentary football. And
with that, you know, you've got to maximize your possessions offensively.
You got to make your plays count. You can't count
your plays. You know, we had seventy six plays the
other night. When Alabama went to Vanderbilt a few weeks ago,
they ran forty eight plays. I think their next opponent

(06:44):
ran fifty two. I think ball State ran sixty. And
so you've got it. You've got to be really efficient
with your plays offensively. And we got a fight like
crazy to stay on the field extending our drives on
third down. And then we got to find a way
defensively to get them off the field, which probably means
we got to win on first down. We got to
do a great job on third down and try to

(07:04):
minimize the third and short opportunities that they get. So
very good football team quarterbacks a heck of a player.
He definitely is the straw that stirs the drink for
them in the run game and in the past game.
He's definitely infused a competitive, winning mentality into that team.
And so we've got we've got to work cut out
for him and defending him as well as their entire team.

Speaker 5 (07:26):
So it should be a heck of a matchup for us.

Speaker 1 (07:28):
All right, Let's get to a couple of questions before
we get to the break. First of all, it's peak
at the quarterbacks. He was asked about Diego Pavia later,
the Vanderbilt quarterback, and we have plenty of time to
talk about that young man as the week goes forward.
But a lot of folks are fixated, obviously on the
quarterback play at Texas, and that includes Quentin Ewers, who,
of course, was pulled out of the game in that

(07:52):
second quarter when he was having struggles. As Sark told
the television reporters and told us after afterwards on the
post game, he wanted to settle him down a little bit,
and having calmed down a little bit, and then he
went back in and played better after that. So he
was asked, is it a difficult situation. Is it delicate?
How you handle that to keep a guy from losing confidence?

(08:13):
In short, how you handle a situation like that A
couple of things. I think Quinn definitely can play better.

Speaker 4 (08:19):
We've got to continue to work his pocket presence and
making sure that he's capitalized, capitalizing on the premier looks
when we get them. Why we're calling plays and we
get those shots to take them.

Speaker 5 (08:29):
But I also think we need to play better around him.

Speaker 4 (08:31):
You know, our offense isn't about one player playing well.
It's about all eleven playing well. And I don't think
we've been at our best from a from a totality standpoint. So, yes,
Quinn needs to needs to play better, and I believe
that he will. I thought he played a better second half. Again,
the game was a little bit out of whack, But
I think we need to be better around him as well.
Up Front, the run, game, receivers, creating separation, getting open

(08:55):
all that needs to needs to needs to improve.

Speaker 2 (08:57):
All right, So that's about his performance. What about his
coin confidence?

Speaker 4 (09:04):
Well, I think it's him understanding that we have confidence
and belief in him. Again, we were very clear of
why we made that move at the end of the
second quarter of of him kind of recalibrating him, getting refocused,
giving him a chance to get into the locker room
so that we could visit.

Speaker 5 (09:21):
And again, I thought it was an effective.

Speaker 4 (09:23):
Move for for him, for us as a team. But
we got we got a ton of respect for Quinn,
a ton of confidence in Quinn.

Speaker 2 (09:30):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (09:30):
I think he's gonna come out and play really good
football for us here the second half of the season.

Speaker 1 (09:34):
Okay, all right, And then I was asked for an
update on injured guys, most notably Andrew mccoba.

Speaker 4 (09:42):
Yeah, he'll be uh, you know, he'll be questionable this week.
Were Yeah, he'll be uh you know, he'll be questionable
this week. We're gonna we're gonna have to monitor him.
You know, we do have the buye after this game
before we come back, and I think I believe we
played Florida after that, so you we're just gonna to
turn closely this week. But but again, I'm not going

(10:03):
to put him back out there if he's not ready
to go, knowing that I can have a couple more
weeks after this to get him healthy. A little similar
to the Quinn situation, I guess. So we'll look at it.
We'll see what it looks like. But you know, again,
it's nothing that is, you know, season ending, anything of
that sort.

Speaker 2 (10:19):
So there's at least that part of it anyway, is
good news.

Speaker 1 (10:22):
All right, Well, we'll hear more from Sark throughout the
course of the program in all.

Speaker 2 (10:25):
Three hours this afternoon.

Speaker 1 (10:26):
Up next, we have today's edition of Inconceivable as we
continue on sports Radio AM thirteen under the zone of
the iHeartRadio app.
