On a long Warns Monday, going to hear more from
coach sark here momentarily updating that final game of the
Major League Baseball regular season. The Braves have taken a
one nothing lead on the Mets as a bat in
the bottom of the second g or shallow with an
RBI single, so Atlanta on top of New York in
Game two one nothing. Mets won the opener eighty seven,
so New York is in as a wildcard, either the
(00:41):
five seed or the sixth seed. If Atlanta wins games two,
Atlanta will be the five seed, the Mets would be
the six seed. If Atlanta loses Game two, the Mets
would be the five seed and Arizona gets in as
the six seeds. So the Braves have to win this game,
and they decided they couldn't start Chris Saale or Ace
because a backspat, so it's kind of the good and bad.
(01:03):
If they find a way to win this game without him,
then they could have him for Game one or Game two,
you might think of that wild Card series, which begins
in San Diego tomorrow night.
Speaker 4 (01:13):
So that's that's where that would be if it turns
out that way.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
All right, let's transition back into Long Ran football. I'm
bringing comments from head coach Steve Sarkisian's weekly news conference,
which we brought to you live this morning at eleven
thirty and bring to you every Monday at eleven thirty
here on the Zone. But some more thoughts from coach
(01:39):
sark from the press conference today, and among those the
questions from the presser, I want to make sure that
I got it here, might accidentally have Yeah, all right,
give me just a second here to pull them back up,
and here they are, okay. So he was talking about
(02:03):
his offensive line and how they had come back and
played really well. And another thing that he had discussed
was that old complimentary football thing that coaches always like
to talk about when their offense and defense both are
clocking in and doing their job.
Speaker 5 (02:24):
I do encourage our guys to do that. I think
you and I think that we have grown into that
as a team. You know, because of the situational Masters
meetings that we have on Fridays and I show them
different stuff in different games, and I think they like
watching football. And maybe they did before, I don't know,
but I sure feel like this now more than ever,
(02:44):
We're watching a lot of football, their comment and commenting
to me about what's going on in games.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
You know.
Speaker 5 (02:52):
Quite frankly, when when we got done with the press conference,
I watched the remainder of the first half on TV
in my office and then I heard up and got
my car and I raced home to watch the second
half of that game because I had you know, you
just have this word inkling. You know, there's one thing
about Georgia and Kirby.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
They're champions.
Speaker 5 (03:10):
You know that they're they're they're a two time national champion,
you know, program since he's been there, they've they've played
for it, they've they've been involved in high level games.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
I just never thought that they were just gonna roll.
Speaker 5 (03:21):
Over, and they didn't, and they fought their way all
the way back and and what an epic game. You know,
to think that those two teams, the way that it
that it all played out, I think puts things into
perspective for us, you know, And that's why I said
what I said Saturday, Like we needed some adversity, you know,
because adversity is gonna come and we're gonna be in
(03:42):
some we're gonna be in some some fights and some
and our ability to move on to the next play
and refocus.
Speaker 1 (03:49):
And I think you saw that time and time again
in that game.
Speaker 5 (03:53):
Of just the pendulum swinging in one direction the other
and the mental fortitude it takes to to get refocused
to continue to play.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
And so it was a heck of a game. Impressive.
Speaker 5 (04:03):
I mean, that was that was the sec right there
at its finest, you know, and there's I'm sure there's
going to be a bunch of other ones coming up.
Speaker 4 (04:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (04:09):
That was in response to a question from our friend
Cedric Golden with the Austin American Statesman.
Speaker 4 (04:13):
He asked him a couple of questions.
Speaker 3 (04:15):
One, does he encourages guys to watch football during the
bye week?
Speaker 4 (04:21):
And coaches have different perspectives on that.
Speaker 3 (04:26):
I remember Mac Brown used to say, yeah, we tell
them to watch, but you know, don't get too emotionally
involved in It's see if there's something that you know
can help you, if it's another opponent you're going to
watch on down the road. They said the same thing
I think I think Charlie Strong said it, and and
Tom Herman said as well, Yeah, we like them to watch,
don't you know. Don't spend too much energy on it
(04:48):
and watch them, but see where you might be able
to make a difference on that. And Sark likes the
fact of having students of the game. That that thing
about situational masters. We heard that in the in the
locker room. And and also Will Matthews in his conversation
with John day Cook last week, he talked about that
(05:12):
the situational masters, how they do in certain situations, and
there's the asms when they're the anti situational Masters and
it doesn't go, well, how would you do in that
certain situation? So it does give them some more perspective
on the game overall, and not just as it relates
to themselves.
Speaker 4 (05:32):
Okay, a lot of fans do these kinds of things.
Speaker 3 (05:36):
They compare how the offense operates when a different quarterback
is running the show. The last two weeks, Arch Manning
has started. He came in halfway through roughly, you know,
game number three of the season, and so he's had
about two and a half games under belt this season.
But we also know what when you as how efficient
(05:58):
he is when when he's healthy and out there as well.
Speaker 4 (06:01):
UH, and you know.
Speaker 3 (06:02):
There's there's a better than decent chance that Quinn will
be back and be ready to start in the game
against Oklahoma.
Speaker 4 (06:10):
So Sark in the news.
Speaker 3 (06:12):
Conference was asked to compare how these two guys run
the offense, Arch and Quinn, the similarities, the differences, and
the effectiveness of each when they're running the offense.
Speaker 5 (06:26):
I don't really compare and contrast as much like that
I have. We haven't looked at it that way. We
looked at the efficiency of which we've operated with within
the specific schemes that we've called uh. And then also
how we've just operated totality as an offensive.
Speaker 1 (06:44):
Unit, like like Saturday.
Speaker 5 (06:49):
And you know, I'd love to play the should have,
could have would a game, but eliminate these eight penalties, right,
Eliminate the fumble in the red area, Eliminate the drop
touchdown pass, eliminate the which taking three points off the board.
You're probably looking at a fifty six point game somewhere
in there, right, You're probably looking at three more touchdowns
somewhere in there in some capacity.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
And that's been kind of the norm at home.
Speaker 5 (07:11):
For whatever reason, we had these mishaps right, a fumble
in the red area, the fumble first play the second half,
a drop touchdown, the eight penalties, me taking three points
off the board. We had these things come up. That
next thing, you know, you score thirty five and it's like, well,
what happened, No, this is what happened. Here's exactly what happened. Now,
how are we going to fix it? So I don't
know if it's necessarily the quarterback right that is responsible
(07:34):
for those things, but it's like anything, the quarterback always
gets more credit when things go well, and the quarterback
probably gets a little bit more of the blame or
he's not leading the team as good when things don't
go well, when in reality, none of those things were
really had anything to do with Arch Right. He can't
run the ball, he can't catch it, he can't block,
he can't stay on sides. He had his own issues
(07:54):
that I was, as I was quoted in saying on TV,
ripping his ass for right. But that's that's our job
as coaches, is to try to push these guys to
go be the best.
Speaker 1 (08:03):
And so I haven't really looked at it that way.
Speaker 5 (08:05):
I look at it like, man, We've got two really
capable players at the position. We're extremely fortunate they've got
great rapport with one another. And I couldn't ask for
more to have a third year starter at quarterback for
us and getting healthy and ready to come back, as
well as having a backup who now has gotten an
immense amount of experience that we're may have to lean
(08:27):
into again later.
Speaker 1 (08:28):
In the season.
Speaker 3 (08:29):
Okay, all right, so there's some more from Sark talking
about that, and again it is the expectation that Quinn
Youwers will be ready to go for Oklahoma. You have
the whole open date week, the bye week this week,
and then the week of preparation getting ready for ou
all of next week next He was asked more about
(08:51):
that injury and what exactly is he looking for in
the progress for Quinn Youewers to return from the oblique
injury to be ready in time.
Speaker 2 (09:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
No, I think it starts right when they get injured.
Speaker 5 (09:05):
You know, we always look to every player, but most
notably the quarterback. When he gets injured, we want to
pull him in even tighter. We want to pull him
in even closer, you know, And so you know, when
we're at practice, Quinn is engaged. He's in every meeting.
He's talking about the game plan. Friday night before the
you know, we go through the call sheet with the quarterbacks,
(09:27):
he's talking through different things. On Saturday, he's wearing the
ear piece, so we keep him engaged on that front,
and then throughout the week, I'm really trying to assess
the things that I think he's most comfortable with. Various
injuries right along the way, different different types of injuries,
and so, okay, what does it look like he's most
comfortable with, and if he's gonna play I've already kind
(09:48):
of listed out ten, fifteen, maybe twenty things that I
think he feels really good about, and we'll probably go
in that direction if he were to place that he's
running stuff that he's had some success with throughout the week,
as opposed to saying this looks like a great play design.
It should work, but either he didn't rep it because
of limited reps during the week, or when he did
(10:09):
get that rep it didn't look so good. The stubborn
me would still call that play. The guy that tries
to step back and try to put his players in
the best position to be successful goes to his bucket
of the stuff that I thought he did well throughout
the week.
Speaker 3 (10:22):
Sark also was asked about the running game and how
important it was to see different guys perform. Yes, there
were the two fumbles from Jayden Blue, but he had
scored a touchdown and had had some It came off
one hundred and twenty four rushing yards the week before
he got eighty eight yards from Trey Weisner as well.
Jared Gibson continues to contribute. He was asking about trying
(10:44):
to get that running game to completely break out and
bust loose.
Speaker 5 (10:48):
I would want more, you know, if you truth be
told on the in the run game, I think we're close,
you know, I think we're close. That's why I really
challenged the receivers because a lot of those.
Speaker 1 (11:00):
Chunk runs or big runs.
Speaker 5 (11:01):
Are a byproduct of that receiver making that last block.
You know, our longest run the other day was was
by Trey Wisner down our sidelines, and if you go
back and watch the play, you see the effort from
DeAndre Moore on that play.
Speaker 1 (11:15):
He went and blocked the safety.
Speaker 5 (11:16):
Once the ball spit out, he turns and runs and
then he goes and blocks the corner and it springs
tray for a long run. And so it's really getting
our guys to understand that the effort that is needed
to play with when we perimeter block. It's one thing
on the bubble screens and things like that, it's another
in the run game and being committed to it, because
the better our run game goes, the better the play
(11:37):
action pass game is going to be. You can't you
can't defend both those two things, you know, equally if
we're doing it right. And so yeah, I would I
would like to have a few more you know, chunk runs.
I think we're more than capable to have a championship
caliber run game. I mean, I think we're we're really
well versed in our schemes. I think we've got good runners,
we've got a really good old line, and I think
(11:58):
we're very close to have and kind of that breakout
type game.
Speaker 1 (12:02):
So we'll see how that goes. Arch just the.
Speaker 5 (12:05):
Little the nuances, you know, I'm on him on the
little things, you know. I got on him about something
that maybe be trivial, maybe not. Well, the first quarterback
sneak we call with him in the game. I think
he scores and I think the officials actually think he scores,
but he gets up and gets out of the end zone.
Speaker 1 (12:23):
So by the time they got.
Speaker 5 (12:24):
There, they couldn't tell if he was in the scrum
or not where he was on the field. So I
tried to explain it to him on the headset with
the beauty of the headset. He almost did the same
thing again, and oddly enough, when the play was done,
the official came to me said, hey, remind urs, just
stay on the ground so we can see where he's at.
So there's little things like that, right, and so sometimes
it's not always the read or the poor throw or something.
(12:47):
There's little things that we're trying to coach him on
that that's just that's just experience.
Speaker 3 (12:53):
Yeah, you know, it's interesting if you look at the
highlights of that, and Jonathan Thomas pointed this out last
night on kx N on their show, that you can
see the official saying to Arch, stay down on the
ground a little longer in the situation, like them, we
crossed the goal line, so we can make sure that
you actually crossed. So because as Sart just said, it
(13:17):
looked like he scored the first time, but he got
up so quickly. Officials couldn't make the call on that.
So that's just one of those things in our And
Sarka was asked about the quote unquote ripping his ass
is what he said on national television. Think about hard
coaching overall certain guys, one guy as opposed to the
(13:40):
other guy.
Speaker 4 (13:41):
The difference on the hard coaching.
Speaker 1 (13:43):
Well that's you know.
Speaker 5 (13:44):
I think that's why in recruiting we try to make
it a science, but it's not. You know, it's like
the NFL draft. You know, everybody tries to hit those
hit your picks spot on, But why are their first
round pick bus at quarterback?
Speaker 4 (13:58):
You know?
Speaker 1 (13:58):
Why is the first pick of a draft bust? You know?
How does that happen?
Speaker 5 (14:02):
And so we try to do our best to ask
the right questions, get to know, listen for responses that
and listen for the real answer, not listen for what
you want to hear. And I think that's human nature.
But the thing about arch is like, I think that's
why they.
Speaker 1 (14:18):
He came here. I don't think it was the secret.
Speaker 5 (14:21):
The family has known my history enough to know our
style of coaching, our style of offense, and so I
don't I don't think it's a shock or a surprise.
You know, they did their due diligence that you're gonna
get coached hard, but the results will be the results,
and we'll have a great experience doing it. But I'm
always going to push these guys to be better than
they were yesterday. And he's no different, Quinn's no different,
(14:42):
Trey Owens is no different. And that as a coach,
that's the satisfaction that you get when you when you
see a player develop and grow and get better consistently.
Speaker 3 (14:50):
Okay, all right, so there is some more from us
talking about coaching Arch, and like we said, the probability
is that Quinn yours will be ready to go. But
it's good to have Arch get that type of experience
of these past couple of weeks as a starter to
know that they can go to him if they have
to go to him, even as Quinn is their guy.
(15:14):
And Sarks said that, I think in the postgame press
conference you were in it in the actual press conference
cam where he said we need Quinn back as our
quarterback because he's the leader of our team, I believe
is what he said off of that. So that's not
a slight to Arch in any way, shape or form.
It's just saying Quinn's qb wan. He's a number one
guy and our team is led by him. But it
(15:39):
is good that Arch was able to have the experience
that he has had and in that he can go
in back at any time if needed, including in the
Red River rivalry game or against Georgia or whoever it
might be.
Speaker 4 (15:52):
I forget who made the point.
Speaker 2 (15:53):
It may have been on the radio broadcast, but with
you and Roger and Will that you don't want Arch
Manning's first ever art to come at the Horseshoe in
twenty twenty five, that type of environment. So to be
able to get Art some reps and of course you
know it comes with you know, Quinn yours being injured,
but they get him some reps to get him starts
(16:14):
conference games, even against maybe a group of five opponents
like Louisiana Monroe. It's good for him to get more
comfortable and understand what it takes to go into a
week as to starter, what to prepare like because he
never started a game. And I don't care how many
games you started in high school. It's completely different than
it is in the college level. So it sucks that
Quinn was out for so long, but allowed Art to
(16:36):
get some valuable playing time because you know, we know,
with Quinn's injury history, there's always that chance that arch
Many will have to come in again.
Speaker 3 (16:43):
All right, coming up, we'll update you on the final
baseball game of the regular season in MLB and some
other topics as well when we continue on sports Radio
AM thirteen under the zone of the ir Radio app.
