Speaker 1 (00:00):
Before we get to a hearing from Sark.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
On our text line, our man CB said, you brought
up how many games Texas could potentially play this season
if they make a run in the College Football Playoff. Well,
Sark in ninety six with BYU was the quarterback when
BYU played fifteen games, the first team ever to do
so on the first team to ever win fourteen games
(00:24):
in the season Division one FBS. Yes, CB is right
the things to remember about that, and Sark has talked
about this before. But I'm glad you brought it up, CB,
because I'll probably bring it up next week when we
do a show that that year, BYU was still in
the Western Athletic Conference, I believe, and it was the
(00:49):
first year that TCU and I guess SMU were in
the whack because the Southwest Conference had ended after the
prior season, and it was the first year of the
Big Twelve and neither of the schools were in the
Big twel and so they had to play them as
conference opponents. But also they played Hawaii, and the NCAAA
rule goes that if you play Hawaii, if you go
(01:10):
out to Hawaii and play Hawaii, that's a non exempt game. Yeah,
it counts on your record, counts on all that kind
of stuff. Conference game, all that business, but it doesn't
count back then against the eleven regular season games. So
they played twelve regular season games. Then they had a
conference championship game which they had to go over time
(01:31):
to be Wyoming.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
They gave them thirteen. Actually they had twelve.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
They played in the Kickoff Classic game too, that was
what it was, plus Hawaii, so that gave them thirteen.
After the conference after the regular season, they played in
the conference championship game against Wyoming that was fourteen, won that,
and then went to the Cotton Bowl and beat Kansas
State nineteen to fifteen, fifteen games, the first school to
(01:57):
play that and start making reference the other day to
the fact that his team could play upwards of sixteen,
maybe even seventeen games if if it worked out they
wait with the playoff. I have maintained from the start
that you could play seventeen games if you're in your
(02:25):
conference championship. So if you're in your conference championship, if
you win the conference championship, you're not going to play
seventeen games because you're gonna get a buye in the
first round. But you could wind up playing that many
if you get in the conference championship and then let's
say you don't get a buye, you don't win that
conference championship game, So then you're in that first round
(02:47):
bracketing where five will play a home game against the
twelve seed, the and the winner that would play the
number four seed, which gets a buy Also on that
side of the bracket, the eight seed plays the nine seed,
and the winner that will draw the one seed. Then
on the other side of the bracket, the sixth seed
(03:08):
will play the eleven seed, and the winner that will
get it would play the three seed in the quarterfinals,
and the seventh seed would play the ten seed, with
the winner to play the two seed in the quarterfinals.
That's how that would work, So you could play four
more games out of that, so that would be seventeen.
If you're playing twelve in the regular season and in
the conference championship, but lose the conference championship, that's how
(03:32):
you'd get the seventeen. So that's about the only way.
That's the only route really you can get the seventeen.
You'd have to play in your conference championship, lose the
conference championship, and then get into the field and have
to play a first round game and wind up playing
four full games. That's how you would get the seventeen
long schedule. Yeah, it would definitely be all of that
(03:54):
if that were the case. And again on this webinar today,
there were some interesting things that came out and we'll
talk about it a little later on what Richard Clark
said about that. Let's hear from long Orange head coach
Steve Sarkisian from the SEC teleconference. Here's the opening comments from.
Speaker 3 (04:12):
Sorry, head into our second bye of the season, eight
games in, and you know, I thought, I thought it
was good to get a win on the road against
a really good Vanderbilt team last week and the that
that team is tough and they play hard and Clark's
done a great job, so to get out of there
with a win, and to take this week to hopefully
get a few of our guys back healthy as we
(04:35):
head into the final four games of the regular season
here coming up, all going to be very difficult games.
I think this buy is coming out a good time
for us, and you know, we're looking forward to getting
back at it again next week and as we get
ready for Florida.
Speaker 2 (04:47):
Now here's something you can always take to the bank.
Whenever Start does any kind of press conference other than
maybe postgame, and I'll explain in a minute, other than
maybe a postgame press conference, if you're talking about like
say a Monday press conference, if you are talking about
(05:12):
a deal like this, the SEC teleconference, if you're talking
about his Thursday media briefing. In almost every instance, you
can expect him to get a question from somebody about recruiting,
especially if they have a home game coming up. And
the Long Warns do have a home game coming They
have two home games remaining against Florida a week from
(05:34):
Saturday and then Kentucky on the twenty third. So a
lot of these questions come from the reporters from the
various fan sites, be it Orange Bloods or two four
seven or you know, Inside Texas, whatever it might be,
on three, whatever it might be.
Speaker 1 (05:53):
Invariably, what will happen is a.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
Reporter from one of those sites will ask about recruiting,
because that's a lot of what the con ten is
driven on several of these sites. They might not, you know, postgame,
unless it was like a home game where they say, hey,
do you have some recruits in you know, how did
they did they like it? YadA YadA, that sort of thing.
When you got a home game, man, there will be
a question about it, So checking in if you had
(06:16):
it on your being go card.
Speaker 1 (06:17):
Yes. Uh.
Speaker 2 (06:19):
Sark was asked if there is a sense of urgency
with only two home games remaining to get as many
recruits on campus as possible, to give them the full
exposure to everything.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
Well, I think, you know, recruiting is always at the
forefront of a lot of what we do, and we've
been fortunate to get a lot of players, a lot
of kids to games. I had a great turnout for
the Georgia game. You know, we'll we'll continue to stress
and to push of you know, getting players to uh
for our final two home games. Well, it should be
great games, great environments, so that that really doesn't change,
(06:59):
you know, as far as players come to game. I think,
you know, for the most part, all the guys we're
recruiting have at least been to one game here this
season and gotten the sense and a feel for the
environment at dk R, and so we feel comfortable with that.
Speaker 1 (07:11):
You know, we try to take advantage of our of
our by.
Speaker 3 (07:13):
Weeks and days that we have like this week to
to get on the road and get to schools and
see people play, and then and then you and then
you you know, you start the process of of you know,
getting guys to try to finish at signing date. You know,
last year, you know, we made the conference championship game
and it was still open to recruit, and so at
(07:35):
that point, you know, what's the sacrifices that you make?
You know, I think you know, recruits like to join
really good teams and and and be part of teams
that are competitive and and tough, and they want to
play with the best. They want to compete with the
best on a daily basis. And so sometimes the best
recruiting tool we have is being a successful football team
to go along with the environment here at dk R,
(07:56):
to go along with the education and the city of Austin,
all the things that we have. And so, you know,
you can't do everything all the time, because if you're
trying to do everything, you're probably not good at anything.
And so, you know, the best thing we can do
is play really good football on top of when we
have our moments to recruit, do a great job at that.
Speaker 2 (08:16):
Yeah, it's kind of a chicken and egg thing with that,
and I've heard Sarka have to address this particular part
of it as well as Rodney Terry when Texas basketball
has been the NCAA tournament about how do you balance
like what you do with a portal when you're trying
to get a team ready to play. And I remember
Rodney said, well, we're concentrating on playing an NCAA tournament game,
but we'll, you know, we'll deal with the portal. We've
(08:38):
got people working on it. It's the same thing too.
I think most people who follow not only the Texas program,
but if they follow a major college program in Southeastern Conference,
Big ten, Big twelve, whatever, they know that the staffs
that are put together by the head coach include not
only the coaching staff members and then things like you know,
(09:03):
a chief of staff, a general manager, director of high
school relations, personnel director. Those are all titles and positions
that can be held in a college football program. In
addition to those positions, there are positions set aside where
(09:23):
there are people who work for an athletic department for
a football program or whatever whose sole job is scouring
the portal and working recruiting. And that's what sark is
kind of getting at and what Roddy Terry does with basketball.
We have people working on that reminds me of the
line at Indiana Jones. You know, we have top men
(09:44):
working on it. What kind of men? Top men? So
they've got people working on it is the point.
Speaker 1 (09:51):
All right.
Speaker 2 (09:51):
We'll hear more from Sark coming up throughout the course
of the program this afternoon from that SEC teleconference. Up
next Inconceivable on a Wednesday afternoon on sports Radio AM
