Speaker 1 (00:00):
I commend, I really do.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
I commend the ESPN guys for I think properly explaining
the difference between being ranked and we the slot you
would go into into the bracket, at least in the
early stages anyway, I think those who haven't picked it
up will figure it out over time. But like, for example,
Ohio State is number two in the rankings, but based
(00:25):
on where things are today, if the playoff were to
start this week, they'd be in the five position because
Oregon would be higher than them and would be the
Big Ten champ at this point. But again, there's more
football to be played there. The same thing holds down
and slide down, and I know it gets a little confusing.
(00:45):
If folks were to look at their bracket, they put
their AP ranking right beside their name, but they put
where they would be in the bracket out on the
left edge, which is a little easier to see anyway.
But according to their bracket, the Loghorns, Texas was five
in the College Football Playoff rankings, but because there were
two Big Ten schools ahead of them, one that would
(01:08):
be Ohio State, would slot into number five. In Oregon
of course number four, so that would push Texas down
one slot to six, where in the first bracket they'd
face Alabama in Austin the eleven seed.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
Talk about an electric opening round on the College Football Playoff.
I'm okay, rather not face Jilling Milroe in Alabama the
first round if.
Speaker 1 (01:29):
You could avoid that, Yeah, be all right.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
That's why I say, you know, for all the people
say maybe it's a better idea just to go ahead
and play.
Speaker 3 (01:35):
No.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
I understand the sentiment about saying being in the five slot,
you played the weakest. Probably a G five, although if
you've seen boys he play, if they wind up as
the twelve seed, you know, or Oregon, Yeah, and even
if it's not them, maybe it's a b YU. Ever,
what you wish for that's a home game, and then
(01:56):
you would slot into playing the number four team in
a bowl game in a neutral site. So those are
some thoughts about that, but we'll see where it goes forward.
If you win your conference and you're one of the
power forwards, chances are you going to have a buye. Definitely,
i'd say in the case of the SEC and the
Big Ten, and definitely the AEC if it's Miami. Beyond that,
(02:19):
no guarantees yet, with regard to the Big Twelve or
the ACC depending on what happens with the rest of
their regular seasons and how Boyse State finishes the season
as well. I think it's important to keep all of
that in mind. All right, let's hear some more from
long Warts head coach Steve Sarkesian ask for injury updates
now on Isaiah Bond and Andrew mccoba's this week progresses.
Speaker 4 (02:40):
Yeah, they both have had a good week so far.
Speaker 2 (02:42):
Okay, So that means that they would you would project
that they would be able to play. Jermaine Lelay is
probably going to make his first collegiate start. He's going
to have to start or he's going to have to
play more snaps, let's put it that way in the
first half. Because Vernon Broughton, due to the targeting call
(03:04):
in the second half and the fourth quarter against Vanderbilt,
is gonna have to sit out the first half of
the game. So uh, sark was asked what Germaine Lila
brings to the table with Broughton do to sit out
the first half.
Speaker 5 (03:15):
Well, we're gonna need, you know, the complete player in Germaine.
You know, the Floria has got a really physical offensive line,
their physical running football team. So first and foremost, you know,
our ability to stop the run is going to be
critical Saturday, and he's got to play a big part
in that.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
He is expecting, obviously Vernon Broughton to be ready to
go the second half. And wasn't it Monday at the
press conference cam where Sark was asked?
Speaker 1 (03:43):
I think it was I'm trying, I'm trying to remember
who it was to ask.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
I think it was anwar Richardson who asked Sark, I'm curious,
does he go through like regular practice reps and warm
up reps and all that other kind of stuff when
you're when he has to sit out the first half
of the game. Was it Danny Davis? I mean we
were in Las Vegas. I could Delfrid sure was listening.
Whoever was that asked him? It's a good question, and
(04:09):
Sark even said it was a good question, but he said,
Vernon's going through regular work, so lolay will would step
into that slot at least for a lot of the snaps.
I do have regular rotation in the interior part of
the defensive line. Remember when Velton Gardner transferred in from
s MU was listed as a fourth running back and
got some carries Hurning this season. Then he got hurned
(04:30):
and we had heard from him he hadn't been available.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
So Sark was asked if Velton Gardner was out for
the season.
Speaker 4 (04:36):
Yeah, he's out for the season. He had an eye injury.
Speaker 2 (04:39):
So eye injury takes him out, So he's out for
the year. The requisite Arch Manning question. There's always going
to be this, especially by the way, and again I
did not have a chance to actually listen to the
questions coming from the reporters. Would I be right in
(05:00):
guessing that it was not a local reporter that asked
about Arch's development? Uh, Then that sound like something from
an out of town media source on an SEC teleconference
would ask, hey, can you bring us update?
Speaker 1 (05:13):
How's how's Arch Banning? Look? I believe so, okay, you're right, Well,
you're right, okay. Uh. So Sark was asked, how has
Arch developed over the course of the season.
Speaker 4 (05:23):
Yeah, I think Arch is doing a really nice job.
Speaker 5 (05:25):
You know, Gosh, we were fortunate to have him step
in the way that he did, uh for those for
those two and a half games and got some some
starts under his belt. You know, I think he continues
to work at his you know, overall understanding of what
we're doing schematically and then working on some of the
fundamentals and details that we're asking.
Speaker 2 (05:43):
Okay, And then there was one other question, uh about
uh Florida, and this had to do with the Gators
being really good in terms of getting turnovers. Don't we
talked about to Vanderbilt was good in the turnover department
as well, But they're actually even in turnover ratio the
(06:09):
offense the defense. What they've been able to get, uh,
in terms of fumbles lost and recovered, in the interceptions
and things like that. But they've been very aggressive. And
Sark was asked not only about that about but also
about the offensive line allowing during the course of the season,
allowing twelve sacks this season, the offensive line allowing that,
(06:32):
and asked about Florida's ability to force turnovers.
Speaker 5 (06:35):
Yeah, So, you know, I think one thing is they've
they've got a good scheme that you could see their
players have gained confidence in.
Speaker 4 (06:44):
As the year has gone on.
Speaker 5 (06:46):
You know, they're really physical at the line of scrimmage,
and so because of that, you know, I think they
can deploy people in the secondary from a coverage perspective
and mixed coverages and disguise coverages. But on the flip side,
they will be aggressive at times and they'll they'll pressure
you and they'll force the quarterback into some poor decisions.
Speaker 4 (07:06):
And so I think they just do a good job
of of all that.
Speaker 5 (07:08):
They've got quality players, they've got a good scheme that
the players have gained confidence in. But then it's them
mixing all that they do uh to force some some
some poor decisions from the quarterbacks perspective.
Speaker 4 (07:21):
You know, on the offensive side of the ball.
Speaker 5 (07:22):
You know, I think Billy and I are kind of
cut from a similar cloth, and that you know, he
believes in running the ball and when you when you
run it, and then you can utilize the play action
pass and you know, give your offensive line put them
in a little better positioning that that that helps you
know that they they really haven't been in games where
(07:43):
they've just been behind, where they've had to drop back,
drop back, drop back. You know, they've been able to
maintain some balance and again that that forces you know,
defenses to not just pin the ears back and rush
the passer, but have to defend the run and and
then they can run placks past. They can run bootlegs
and keepers and spread outs and so the launch point
(08:04):
can change. And so you know, I think that's you know, one,
they've got some pretty good players and big guys up front,
but two, I think, you know, because of their ability
to run the football and allows them to take some
of the pressure off that offensive line with the style
of play.
Speaker 1 (08:20):
Okay, there's some comments from Sarka.
Speaker 2 (08:23):
I want to go back to the college football playoff
talk a little bit. I mentioned earlier we were discussing
the possibility of of you know where teams from the
Big Ten and the SEC might fall in this, and
folks talking about the respect or lack thereof with regard.
Speaker 1 (08:46):
To by you.
Speaker 2 (08:48):
You're pretty much saying that's what balder dash, poppycock, horse feathers,
all that other kind of stuff, based on the fact
that they are in the bracket, and right now they'd
be number four bracket.
Speaker 3 (09:00):
I mean, you could rank them twenty five and they're
still going to be the four seed because if they're
their conference champion.
Speaker 2 (09:06):
As long as they're not behind a boy see, but
it'll be the top four conference champions, true, regardless of
whether you're power for or not that's that's one thing
that is kind of interesting about this. The other reason
I bring this up is because when I was talking
about one of the things about Heather Dnisch pointing out,
you know, Colorado may be in a good position this
sort of thing. She also points out and this gets
(09:29):
to what you were talking about earlier to loss Alabama,
and she said, the fact that Alabama is ranked ahead
of these schools Iowa State, Kansas State, and Colorado is
not a good sign for the loser of the Big
Twelve Championship game two loss A and M and LS.
You were also ranked ahead of the Big twelve secondary teams,
(09:50):
which indicates the Big Twelve champion is trending to be
its loan representative. The same can be said for the
ACC runner up. The ACC is in slightly better position
because SMU is right on the bubble at number thirteen.
That indicates that if Alabama were to lose Saturday to LSU,
SMU will still be lurking, though probably behind the two
(10:11):
loss LSU. If SMU runs the table but loses in
the ACC Championship game, it could be a debate in
the committee meeting room, depending on what happens elsewhere with
the conference runner ups, but the fact that two loss
SEC teams already have an edge should be concerning to
those leagues. And that's what I think a lot of
folks thought might happen with the expansion of the playoff
(10:31):
that while we refer to them as power for conferences,
at least in the case of this season so far,
it's really pretty much power too. Given what the first
reveal is. Doesn't mean it's going to finish that way
for sure, but I.
Speaker 3 (10:51):
Don't see how a second ACC or a second Big
twelve team isn't a playoff r how deep the SEC
is plus Notre Dame and Le Norden has to lose
the Army, I think, and then that opens up maybe
another spot. But with how deep the SEC and Big
ten is, Craig, I think one from the Big twelve
and one from the ACC gets in.
Speaker 2 (11:11):
One final note, she pointed out, because Boys he stayed
his ranked number twelve, if that continues through selection day,
the Broncos would earn that same seed and they wouldn't
have to displace a committee twelfth ranked team to make
room for the fifth highest conference champion. With Army all
the way down at number twenty five almost certainly because
of the poor schedule strength. There's a huge gap between
(11:32):
the Broncos and the next Group of five leader. That
could change, though, as the American Conference gets deeper into
the heart of conference play. All right, coming up, we'll
talk some more some NFL football and log worn basketball
when we continue on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
