Speaker 1 (00:00):
What a big weekend coming up, not only for the
Texas log Worns, but for other athletic pursuits on the
UT campus and outside of that, pro sports, college sports,
whatever the situation might be.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
And we're glad to have you with us this afternoon.

Speaker 1 (00:16):
Good afternoon, and welcome to the program here on Sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred of the Zone.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
My name is Craig Way.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
Glad to have you with us as we bring you
the program this afternoon from UFCU dish fog field. Kind
of quiet right now on the fields. Some early field
prep is being done, but the team will be out
in about an hour to begin it's warm ups. It
is a seven o'clock first pitch tonight for Texas against

(00:41):
the Auburn Tigers, Number one in the country, is number
eight in the country. The Auburn is ranked as high
as number six and one of the polls, but in
D one baseball dot com, which is usually recognized as
the as the most pre eminent of the collegiate polls,
Auburn is number eight. Texas is number one. Another top
ten matchup in the SEC. What else is new? You'll

(01:03):
be able to hear it this evening on one o
three point one FM, Austin sad station, our sister station
one oh three point one FM. You can also listen
to it on the Texas Longhorns app and also you
can connect to it via the iHeartRadio app. So baseball
here tonight across the street from us getting underway in

(01:25):
two and a half hours. Texas Softball which fell from
the number one spot, which fell from the top of
the SEC standings, which are pretty tightly bunched after dropping
two of three at home to Tennessee last weekend, and
Texas at number three will host LSU a three game
weekend Thursday, Friday, Saturday Easter weekend series at Red and

(01:49):
Charlie Macombs Field and that gets underway at four thirty
this afternoon. You can listen to Andrew Haynes with a
call on that on the Texas Longcorns app as well.
Our producer who is in the studio I know he'd
probably rather be out at the ballpark where it's sunny
and warm, is Cameron D.

Speaker 3 (02:10):
Parker.

Speaker 1 (02:11):
The D on the birth certificate stands for Dallas. That's
his middle name, as in being named for the NFL
team that he doesn't care to follow right now, even
though it's his favorite team because he's upset with what
they did, He's probably happy with what they did with
the one day contract to bring Tyron Smith in to

(02:31):
retire as a Cowboy?

Speaker 2 (02:33):
Am I right about that? Cam?

Speaker 3 (02:34):
Oh? For sure?

Speaker 4 (02:35):
I mean Tyron Smith should be a first ballot Hall
of Famer that serves a spot in the Cowboys Ring
of Honor, Hall of Honor, whatever it's called. So awesome
to see Tyron Smith come back. He never should have
even left for the Jets in my opinion, but glad
to have him back. And good afternoon in La. I'll
be at the ballpark after our show in So.

Speaker 5 (02:54):
You're coming out, coming out? Excellent, excellent? You need a
parking pass, I think always? All right, I got you
an extra one. Yep, yep, yep, yep, I've got one.
I'll send it to you.

Speaker 2 (03:05):
So good.

Speaker 1 (03:05):
I'm glad, all right, I'm glad you're coming out. The
other thing was say is the D could also stand
for Dallas, as in the Mavericks, as in how about
that ten seed looking like higher than a ten seed
and blasting the Sacramento Kings last night in the plane? Okay, yeah,
I know, it's only the play in and they got

(03:27):
to go to Memphis and try to win. In the
reward for that if they win, that is to get
fed to Cameron's favorite team, the Oklahoma City Thunder in
the first round. But at least they'd be in the
field of sixteen if they were to pull off that win.
But how impressive was that Dallas Mavericks win to you
last night?

Speaker 4 (03:46):
Camp, Yeah, it seemed that the Sacramento Kings are ready
for can Kun is what I got from watching that
game last night.

Speaker 3 (03:54):
The Kings have just I mean, it's funny thing about that.

Speaker 4 (03:56):
A few years ago they were the three seed in
the Western Conference with the bonus, and here they are
an early exit. But hey, you know, all the crap
that we've given Nico Harrison, and we've given Patrick Dumont
and Rich Welts and Jason Kidd, the entire team for
Luca Trade brightly deserved. The players on this team. They
play hard. And you could say, well, of course they're
gonna play hard. They're an NBA team. Why wouldn't they

(04:17):
play hard, But you can kind of tell that Klay Thompson,
Anthony Davis, you know, they take all of this stuff
a little bit more personal.

Speaker 3 (04:24):
Than I think a lot of people understand. So we'll
see what happens.

Speaker 4 (04:28):
I believe they play with Memphis tomorrow night, and Memphis
they might be a one two three can coon team
as well, so I would not be surprised if it
is Dallas, Okay see in the first round.

Speaker 1 (04:39):
It'd be interesting if it does turn out that way,
if it wants up being the Mavericks against the Thunder.
If it turns out that way, however, impressive to see
what Klay Thompson did last night, a guy who had
had what was it the nightmare game there in the
play in last year for Golden State, and was what

(05:02):
the zero for ten from three point range?

Speaker 2 (05:04):
That was just a miserable night. And the Kings won
that game.

Speaker 1 (05:08):
And uh and and he said something I believe the
Scott Van pell And Sports Center right after after the
game abouts good. He said something like exercise the demons
or the ghosts or whatever like that. But when he
shoots like that, and when they can rebound the way
they do, and we know they try hard on defense.

(05:28):
When they do those things, they give themselves a chance
to win.

Speaker 3 (05:33):
They definitely do.

Speaker 4 (05:34):
Craig, and you know, I think the Warriors actually was
Steph Curry until they beat the Grizzlies. They were Steph
was winless in the playing game, which is crazy to
think about considering there's an NBA Championship sandwiched in there.
But you know, it's nice to see Clay exercise his
demons when he's hot.

Speaker 3 (05:50):
He is absolutely hot.

Speaker 4 (05:51):
And you know they're a team that if they can
get by Memphis, you know they can steal a game
or two against Okay. See, but again, you know it's
a team without Kyrie Irving, which it's you know, super
unfortunate that the playoffs will be Kyrie Irving less. But
with with Gafford and in a dy you know, they're
a formidable, a formidable front court and uh.

Speaker 3 (06:12):
They might they might give Memphis some trouble. We'll see it.

Speaker 4 (06:14):
It'll be uh a battle of Jaron Jackson and Zach
Edie against Gafford and lively Anthony Davis. So it actually
should be suiting up to be a real, real fun
playing game tomorrow night.

Speaker 2 (06:26):
Yeah. Uh, you know. The the other thing that.

Speaker 1 (06:31):
Really strikes me about this is, uh, we we get
you know, like you said, when when Anthony Davis is
playing really really well, uh and uh, and and then
gafford able to help inside and then obviously getting uh
the outside shooting from Clay Thompson. It makes a big difference.

(06:55):
How about Brandon Williams last night, Uh, Brandon Williams for
the Mavericks and the job that he did A guy
didn't didn't. He go through a couple of ten day
deals before the Mavericks added him to the regular roster,
and and and he hit some big time shots for
him last night.

Speaker 4 (07:12):
He's been playing in the G leagues the past now
two three years, an undrafted player out of Arizona. You know,
he's had a pretty interesting story. You know, I think
he played a lot uh in the G League for
the Knicks, for the Magic as well. And here he is,
you know, in the play in getting his shot and delivering.
So it's a it's a real, real fun story. And

(07:32):
you know, again this is you know, courtesy of you know,
Kyrie Irving not being available and Jason Kidd turning to
the bench. But what a what a nice find for
for Jason Kidd. And you know, I don't want to
give Anico Harrison too much credit, but you know, hey,
he's he played excellent and could be a huge X
factor tomorrow night.

Speaker 1 (07:51):
Well, here's where I stand about this, and people know
how I feel. I'm I'm not any different than any
other Mavericks fan who feels that, uh, you know that
that you know, Nico Harrison did did a horrible thing
with the trade. It was a bad trade. It's still even.
And that's nothing against Anthony Davis. He'll give us them things,
but on all accounts across the board in terms of

(08:15):
the production, the superstar talent and uh and and and
then obviously the popularity of of Luca uh and how
it's driven fans away. Like like my wife she was,
she grew up in Dallas and as a died in
a wool Mavericks fan was until this happened now and

(08:35):
she's following Luca and the Lakers closely right now. She
she feels as disenfranchised as many Mavericks fancies. So, uh,
I don't want anybody anybody mistaking what I'm about to
say for how I feel about Nico Harrison and Patrick
Dumont and the and the Mavericks family in the whole bed,
I don't want anybody to mistake how I feel about that.
I think I'm standing right with everybody else. The only

(08:58):
thing that I will add is it is only fair
and right to if he made some deals, and he
did with the trades he made last year, to give
him some credit for that, and to get a guy
like Brandon Williams on the roster, Like you said, don't
want to give him too much credit, but you give
him credit where credits due on that deal. Now, is

(09:20):
that enough to overcome the horrific mistake of the trade
that he'd been of course not.

Speaker 2 (09:26):
And it's bad.

Speaker 1 (09:28):
And I'm as disenfranchised a Mavericks fan as anybody else.
Like I said, their expansiencies. In nineteen eighty eighty one,
I was in college and I sold merchandise for them,
worked at Reunion Arena, and that helped put me through college.
I became a big Mavericks fan then it had been
ever since. I just think of the interest of fairness

(09:49):
if a guy did make a couple of nice movies, Yeah,
you recognize that. At the same time also recognizing and
continuing as we all do, as Mavericks fans do, to
feel completely torn asunder by the Luka Doncis trade A
that number one first and foremost, and then b Nico

(10:11):
Harrison doubling down on all of it. Like we talked
about the other day when he had that whatever you
want to call it, clandestine off the record news conference
or what it wasn't off the record, but you couldn't
record it. There were no cameras and no recording devices
in there when he did it, which is a cowardly move.

Speaker 3 (10:31):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (10:31):
And that's and that's.

Speaker 1 (10:32):
Dodging civic and media responsibility as a as a front
office man. And I'm I'm very adamant when I when
when I point that out. So uh that so number one, Yeah,
the trade itself stands on its own destructive merit for

(10:53):
what it did. And then b for them taking the approach,
the we really don't care about the fans approach for
him to say, I don't work for the fans, to
work for the Mavericks, and the comments that he has made,
the comments, the few that have come out, and the
actions that they had at first ejecting fans from the
stands who are chanting fire and Nico or wearing the

(11:14):
T shirts, you know, that sort of thing, and then
they realize what a public or relations disaster that was,
so you know, kind of peeling back walking that back
of bits, but still a mess, and it's a mess
that won't be cleaned up ever. I don't think as
long as this group is in here, it would have
to take something along the lines of them some in

(11:38):
some miracle way in a year or two or whatever,
bringing him back and then winning a world title to
even erase some of the stain that we know that's
not going to happen, So this is probably never going
to be erased off of that. But you give credit
to the team for playing as hard as they did
and finding as hard as they did on the road

(11:58):
to win the game in sacramentolast night. Now, to be
fair to your point, Cameron, and to what I think
Stephen A. Smith pointed out others, Sacramento looked like they
didn't care and didn't want to play anymore. They did
make one run. I think they get it down to
sixteen in the third and then in the fourth quarter,
but the Mavericks had every answer after that, and even

(12:20):
though they wound up winning by fourteen, they were in command.
They were leading by over twenty with about two minutes
to go, and then kind of emptied the bench. The
players played very hard. They play hard for Jason Kidd,
We know that, and I think they'll play hard tomorrow
night in Memphis.

Speaker 2 (12:37):
Now, I don't know that they're going to win. It's
going to be difficult.

Speaker 1 (12:40):
They're flying across the country today and they'll get into
practice probably a workout later today, and then they'll they'll
play the game tomorrow night if they win, just to
get in the field of sixteen, to get in that
first round against you know, obviously the the heavy heavy

(13:01):
favorite Oklahoma City, is quite an accomplishment given everything they
have been through this year, not only with the Luca trade,
but also losing Kyrie Irving and others to injuries, Irving
obviously through probably the end of next year or at
least until the latter part of next season, and then
losing other guys as well. So tip of the hat

(13:23):
of the Mavericks for fighting hard and getting that win
last night. All right, up next, we're gonna hear from
long Orange Head coach Jim Slasniegel talking about this baseball series.

Speaker 2 (13:32):
It's weird.

Speaker 1 (13:33):
I wasn't there yesterday for the media availability, and I
think I was told Cameron, you dived into it to
edit all the sound. Was there not one question asked
about Auburn, not one. It was all about the team
and how they're playing and things like that. But we'll
hear him discuss that. Obviously, the condition of Ethan Inndos's

(13:56):
concern since he's been banged up and we don't know
he's gonna be day to day.

Speaker 2 (14:00):
And we'll see where it is with him going forward.

Speaker 1 (14:03):
But we're gonna hear from Schlats we do have inconceivable
this hour. Next hour we'll hear from Max Grubbs of
the Long Worn Pitching Staff, and we will also next
hour we'll go through some of that as well, and

(14:23):
we'll hear more from Jim Schlasnagle coming up in the
four o'clock hour as well. So a lot to get
to here on the program this afternoon as we continue
from u FCU Dish falk Field on thirteen under the Zone.

Speaker 6 (14:43):
It's The craig Way Show with the voice of the
Texas Longhorns in Hall of Fame Broadcasting Craig Way on a.

Speaker 1 (14:53):
Warm, breezy Thursday afternoon. It's a Thursday, Friday, Saturday. He's
for Texas and Auburn here on this Easter weekends. Eighty
five degrees right now, and it's going to colm a
couple more degrees Hi tomorrow will be around ninety. But
then on Saturday, which is a noon first pitch, they

(15:14):
had a game time starts on that there will be
later in the day on Saturday a chance of range,
so it's probably a good thing that they're going to
play at noon on Saturday. They make changes to the
Friday and Saturday games not because of the threat and
thought about impending weather, but because of Auburn's travel situation,
and so it's seven o'clock to night as scheduled. Tomorrow

(15:36):
night was originally scheduled for seven, but now it is
going to be one hour earlier, six o'clock tomorrow evening
seven o'clock tonight, six o'clock tomorrow, and then on Sunda
on Saturday, when it was scheduled for two.

Speaker 3 (15:50):
It will be high noon noon on Saturday.

Speaker 1 (15:54):
And of course you'll be able to hear the games
on your iHeartRadio app you connect to it on the
Texas Long WRNS app and then over the year on
one of three point one FM tonight and tomorrow night,
Saturday's game here on AM thirteen hunderd the Zone, and
again on the apps as well, all right, let's hear
from long WRNS head coach Jim Slastnangle this from the

(16:14):
media available to yesterday and talking to setting up this
series and really kind of the state of the team,
because the questions that came to Sloss were about the
current state of the team and not so much about
the series against Auburn. But here are Slastnangles opening comments.

Speaker 7 (16:31):
Has pitched in a while, so that was a very
big highlight for Texas. And looking forward to the weekend, Auburn's
got a great team, short week, which is good.

Speaker 8 (16:42):
I don't think anybody should play on Easter, but.

Speaker 7 (16:45):
We're having some jumbled game times due to different events
on campus and Auburn's flight schedule for Saturday, so.

Speaker 8 (16:54):
I've got to be ready for that.

Speaker 7 (16:55):
But we've the way things have gone on the road
for us, with long games or doubleheaders and early morning
games in Kentucky, we should be well prepared for it.

Speaker 1 (17:03):
Okay, all right, So now the questions for coach slashtego
as this team has moved forward to now thirty and five.
The question came about the growth, the growth, the success,
and yes, the confidence and how it feeds off one another.

(17:23):
So he was asked, how has he seen this team's
confidence grow.

Speaker 7 (17:28):
Yeah, I mean I think, you know, it's like chicken
or the egg. You know, what comes first, doing it
or thinking you can do it right? Confidence or results?
Confidence or success. So I think it's probably a little
bit of both. You have to believe in yourself enough
that you're capable of doing it. But especially you know,
this year, there's a lot of unknowns for the program,
going into a new conference, playing in new places, playing

(17:50):
in new environments, and I think they've figured out quickly
that it's still just it's still baseball. And I think
the mental skills and the investment that we've put in
the mental game helps them with that, gives them tangible
tools to handle anything that comes their way. Certainly winning helps,

(18:10):
but we've come from behind. We've played in every scenario
you can play. We've had bad games, we've played poorly
and still won, and we've played well and lost. So,
you know, I think we still have half the conference
season left, So I'd love to think that it's going
to continue like the first half, but more than likely,

(18:31):
you know, we're going to have our ugly stretch or
ugly weekend, and that's when it will truly be tested.

Speaker 2 (18:36):
All right.

Speaker 1 (18:37):
So then a couple of questions about Dylan Balantis, who
has just been so strong, so sparkling, although obviously his
last having was when he gave up that game tying
home run in the bottom of the night to Kentucky
in that fifteen inning game on Saturday, when the long
Ones are up four to three. He was pitching on
back to back days, but in the case of that

(18:57):
home run, you know that that was something else. First
of all, though, the question about Volantis and his release
point and how he can do several different things with
his release and what makes Balanti's release.

Speaker 7 (19:11):
So special, I think I think you know that It's
part of his deal is you know, release height.

Speaker 8 (19:16):
So he's he's already tall, and.

Speaker 7 (19:18):
He kind of throws extremely over the top, so it's
a different He's very unique in terms of those aspects.
Got great angle to his pitches, and then you don't
see that true overhand curveball as much anymore, and it's
more sliders or cutters in which he does throw those pitches.
But he got true overhand curveball and he can throw
for strikes, so you have to respect it. That's that's

(19:41):
that's the key, is he Even some of the better
hitters we face don't get great swings on him because
they have to respect the pitch. If it's if it's
a pitch that you can't throw for a strike, all hitters,
but especially the good hitters, are going to just spit
on it. And so you know, he throws endless strikes
and even when his fastball may be a little bit down,

(20:02):
he's still able to land the breaking ball, and that's
ultimately what I think gives them success.

Speaker 1 (20:07):
Now, it was a fastball that Valantis three that was
hit for that game tying home run in the bottom
of the night the last time out there on Saturday.
So the question was schloss? Was that game tying home
run for Kentucky? Was that a good at bat? Was
it a bad pitch for Valanthis his analysis of it.

Speaker 7 (20:25):
Yeah, Yeah, I mean I give yeah, give a guy credit.
I think he's got like a two thirty something about
an average, but he had like an over nine hundred and.

Speaker 8 (20:33):
Fifty ops like he's got some power.

Speaker 7 (20:36):
They have some guys in their team that haven't shown
it yet, and their ballpark plays pretty big like ours does.
But with film a three to two fastball. It was
a strike, it was down and he got to it.
So it's going to happen in the course of the season.

Speaker 2 (20:50):
Those things do happen on occasion.

Speaker 1 (20:52):
Now, after the game on Sunday, and I asked Schloss
about this the other day, the whole thing, he made
a comment to keep more than on the post game
about his team resembling He said, I don't know if
anybody other than you or I remembers the TV show
Mash Now. I obviously remember it being old enough, but

(21:13):
his reference to his team resembling a Mash unit, at
least in terms of the patients because of the wounded
nature that they have. Max Blue is out until who knows,
maybe on the tail end of the regular season, perhaps
more than likely in the postseason. Nobody knows right now,
and it depends on the rate of healing of that
broken thumb. So that's one thing. Then there's a couple

(21:36):
of pictures out injured. Then on top of that, you've
had the injuries that have happened over the past week
to ten days, and that includes and I guess it
would be two weeks coming into this weekend. With regard
to Adrian Rodriguez, who was injured in the Missouri series,

(21:57):
and it was that a deema uh on a right
at the hammate there right where the hand meets the
wrist uh and uh where that was a problem for
him and he had to get passed that. And still
is to the point where you know, he's a switch hitter,
but still is to the point where he's only able
to swing left handed. Right now he's unable to swing

(22:19):
right handed. He is, however, able to play in the field,
so he's played back at his regular position of third base.

Speaker 2 (22:29):
He is played.

Speaker 1 (22:29):
He played in left field one game in the Kentucky series.
He was at second base the other night against gut
r GV. And a question was asked of Jim Slastnegel yesterday.
Could a rodd as I like to call him, uh
play even in right field?

Speaker 7 (22:48):
Definitely possibility. But with Mendoza out, you know, then it
presents a whole nother challenge. So we've got to figure out,
you know, what's the best who's playing, you know, what's
the best possible combination.

Speaker 8 (23:00):
To give us the best chance to score.

Speaker 7 (23:02):
But also, you know, play good defense, and sometimes that
means you might have to play defense early and take
your chance to see if you can get a lead,
and if you're not, then you got to play offense late.
Or maybe it's the opposite, you know, where we play
the best available bat or at least the best that
we have, maybe give up something from a defensive standpoint. Uh,

(23:24):
and then and then and then and then do something
differently later. But uh, Adrian, I mean, he's a baseball player.
Like he had a sliding catch against Kentucky, he made
a competitive throw on a play at home plate. So
it's it's funny how just our true baseball player can
really be put it anywhere on the field and do well.

Speaker 8 (23:41):
I think Adrian's that.

Speaker 1 (23:42):
Yeah, one one of those guys certainly does Okay, So
he said some of that depends on Mendoza situation. So
we mentioned obviously Ethan Mendoza a diving attempt in fact
knocked down the ball, kept it from getting into the
outfield in the finale on Sunday, but he landed on
a shoulder that it had some problems in the pass

(24:03):
going all the way back to high school and got up,
was able to finish the ball game, but was held
out of Tuesday's game, and that shoulder is still trying
to heal up, and the question is, you know, does
it affect him at the plate?

Speaker 2 (24:19):
Will it affect him in the field.

Speaker 1 (24:20):
In short, slastn aglast for an update the latest that
he had on Ethan Mendoza, It'll be.

Speaker 9 (24:26):
Day to day.

Speaker 7 (24:27):
Yeah, I haven't seen him yet today. I think he's
gonna try to take some dry swings today. I think
the hitting him hitting is will probably but yeah, it's
just going to be day to day and see how
it feels. And we also got to make sure he
doesn't re injure it, so we'll have to have to
just kind of wait and see him. He's he's certainly
tough and he's a he's a very bag baller player.

(24:48):
So if anybody can play through something, he gets him.

Speaker 1 (24:52):
And he's been wanting to play as well. And the
indication is that he might be ready to swing and
could still swing as opposed to playing in the field
of being able to swing first, which would indicate that
maybe he might be available for d H duty.

Speaker 3 (25:05):
But I don't know.

Speaker 1 (25:05):
They'll assess that on a day by day basis and
we'll we'll try to find out here before we leave
their today. If there's an update on Mendoza, he's listed.
Remember that SEC Student Athlete Availability Report, the injury update.

Speaker 2 (25:20):
You know, there was so much, so much bally hood.

Speaker 1 (25:23):
Uh, you know, very very much ballelyhood with regard to football.
During the football season, there was an awful lot talked about, uh,
you know, who was available on a week by week
basis in football and also from time to time in basketball. Well,
that SEC Student Athlete Availability Report applies to all sports,

(25:46):
so you should know that Ethan Mendoza on today's injury
report actually was the one released yesterday evening has been
Thoza listed as probable. The only two guys on the
report of Max Blue, who of course is out, and Mendoza,
who is.

Speaker 2 (26:05):
Listed as probable.

Speaker 1 (26:07):
But there's one more report that comes out and it'll
be out two hours before game time, so that could
change one way or the other.

Speaker 3 (26:16):
So we'll see, uh with regard to that.

Speaker 1 (26:18):
And one other thing from Schlosnage before we take the break.
And you know, we we've mentioned it because it's a
fact and worth mentioning. This team is ranked number one
in the country. We know they're number one in the country,
so they're at the halfway mark of SEC play. Does
it really mean that much. And for that matter, Slas

(26:41):
was asked, does the team really talk much about being
in the top spot at number one?

Speaker 8 (26:46):
Yeah, nothing, not at all. Don't even mention it. I
don't hear anybody talking about it.

Speaker 7 (26:50):
I had one player ask me, coach, how many times
is one of your you know, one of our teams
been number one or whatever? And I was I was like, well,
I remember it happening, but it's never at the end
of the season, so it doesn't really matter. I've had
a couple of b preseason. One doesn't matter. So it's
it's nice for the programs. It's a snapshot in time

(27:11):
of what things look like.

Speaker 8 (27:14):
But you know, I mean it's nice for recruiting.

Speaker 7 (27:18):
Maybe gets you a little exposures things like that, but
I mean we're at Texas week we have plenty of exposures.

Speaker 8 (27:23):
So but I don't think the players, you.

Speaker 7 (27:25):
Know, they don't talk about it when we have a
bad weekend, and they shouldn't talk about it when we're playing.

Speaker 9 (27:30):
Well.

Speaker 1 (27:31):
Yeah, so there it is. That's where they are, even
even being ranked number one. All right, up next, we'll
have Inconceivable for this Thursday afternoon. We'll hear more from
Jim Slasnagle coming up in the four o'clock hour. We'll
hear from long Warm players on three o'clock hour. But
up next inconceivable for a Thursday afternoon on AM thirteen
under the Zone. Pregame start time is going to be

(27:53):
at six forty five. Again, the first pitch will be
at seven o'clock and you can hear that on one
oh three point one FM, Austin's eighty station. So we'll
we'll have that for you coming up tonight at six
forty five on one oh three point one FM. Tell
you what else we have coming up for you one

(28:16):
week from today. And if you're down with and into
the National Football League Draft, the NFL Selection Meeting I
think is the actual name for it.

Speaker 10 (28:33):
And.

Speaker 1 (28:34):
Uh, then then you can come to the right place
for it, and the right place will be at Twin
Peaks and Round Rock, uh, and it'll be next Thursday.
What are we going to all the way up to
is it a six fifty cam with the draft show
or is it two to six I'm trying to remember
with our draft show.

Speaker 4 (28:55):
Next all the way up to two six fifty, So
the Roundrock Express are in action that night so unfortunately
we cannot cut over the start of the draft live
as we wish we could, So we're gonna be up
until about seven o'clock six p fifty ish at the
Twin Peaks and Round Rocks, so deathly come out and enjoy.
There's gonna be some some specials that include a course
of cold ice ice cold beer, and along with some

(29:17):
of other stuff. You could come out and say hi
to you, Craig, to me, Mark, Henry will be there,
my cards will be there, and we're working on some
special guests as well.

Speaker 2 (29:25):
We did it last year. We had an awful lot
of fun and I know what you said.

Speaker 1 (29:28):
You know, we step aside once the Express takeover at
six fifty for the broadcast. But what we do with
this program is to set the stage for you, to
set the table for you so that you know the draft,
analysis of the of the picture pics you may hear,
and then of course everybody can see and hear the

(29:50):
picks going on and Twin Peaks good place to watch
the draft. They've got on all those big screens. So
it should be a lot of fun next Thursday. And
for people who just dive head first into the draft,
it'll be a program worth tuning into, no question about it.
You're you're you're kind of big into the draft, aren't you.

Speaker 4 (30:11):
You know, honestly, Craig with the Cowboys just demise, you know,
I you know, I used to be, you know, trying
to think of, you know, a mock draft, Marvin, you know, constantly,
you know, every mock draft that was coming out, you know,
reading it, rereading it. You know, whether it's Matt Miller
or you know, uh, Todd McShay or melk khyper Junior,

(30:35):
all those guys you know, constantly going through it, and
now less and less so. But of course, you know,
I am excited to see you know, where Jade Baron
ends up.

Speaker 3 (30:44):
He's going to be a first round draft pick.

Speaker 4 (30:45):
Calvin Banks of course, and then a lot of other Longhorns,
including you know, Isaiah Bond, Matthew Golden. You know, I mean,
Texas is going to set up program records for most
draft picks likely this season, which is very very exciting
and kind of tells you where you've sar Keshan in
this program?

Speaker 2 (31:01):
Is that right now? Yeah? And I mean I never ignored.

Speaker 1 (31:10):
The fact that when Texas had several first round draft picks.
I never you know, that it was a sign of
the upward mobility of the football program. I never, I
never dismissed that, But perhaps I didn't give it as
much credit, as much credence as as it might deserve.

(31:34):
Because the simple truth is this, if there are guys
being drafted, what was it, eleven guys last year? If
that were drafted eleven long words that went drafted last year.
If if there are players being drafted, student athletes being
drafted into the NFL to become NFL players from your program,

(31:56):
that means that as they entered the they enter the
draft having been properly prepared at the collegiate level, clearly
on their own and with their coaching. And if if
and this follows, if they have been properly prepared and
uh you know, did their own due diligence and their

(32:16):
own work and their own preparation leading up for it,
If they did do that, then that means it probably
benefited the program in terms of wins and losses. Now,
I know a lot of people said, you know, there
were programs that you know, they hadn't had many uh
you know, first round draft picks or second round draft picks,
and yet we're successful the collegiate level, and that is

(32:37):
certainly possible. It is, after all, the sum of the
parts and not any one or two specific guys. Listen,
we need only look at what's happened at Tennessee with
Nico Iomaliaba to see and to hear from Josh Haipel
that no one player is bigger than the program overall.
But if you have a collection, if you have a handful,
if you have a number of players who could wind

(33:02):
up being drafted, and even perhaps one or maybe two
that might go in the first round, if that happens,
then it's a reflection not only of the success of
the problem, but the success of the program in terms
of how it's being built and how it's being constructed.
And here's that sea word culture of it in all

(33:22):
of those things. And I think we've seen the living
proof of that here over these past couple of seasons
with what sark has done. After all, the long ORNs
in the last two years under Steve Sarkise center twenty
five and five, with two trips to the College Football Playoffs,
are the only program to make the program the playoff

(33:42):
in back to back years, and of course in the
Final four and back to back years.

Speaker 2 (33:47):
But you know, I think that is a.

Speaker 1 (33:50):
Step forward and a show with the progress there because
not just the media, but fans are looking for tangible
sign of how the pro how the program is trending upward.
They want to see tangible signs. Obviously, wins on the field,

(34:11):
contention for conference championships, UH, getting into the College Football Playoff,
getting into the Final four or New Year's Six Bowls
or whatever. Those those are all tangible outward signs of
the UH of the UH, you know, the the program's

(34:33):
upward mobility. And another one is number of players being drafted.
So eleven being drafted is it's a pretty cool deal.

Speaker 11 (34:45):
UH.

Speaker 1 (34:45):
Therefore UH last year for Texas and Sark said there
might be even more. You could see possibly even more
being drafted in this coming draft. So that's a really
cool thing to see with what's going on with UH.

Speaker 2 (34:59):
With long worn football.

Speaker 1 (35:01):
And again, we'll be out at Twin Peaks in Round Rock,
and it'll be a week from the day and it'll
be from two o'clock up till six fifty. So we'll
get you properly prepared for it as you come out.
So we'll look forward to seeing you out there at
twin Peaks of Round Rock. While I'm on the subject
of college football, I did want to bring this long.

(35:22):
It was announced today that Lee Corso is going to
retire from ESPN's College Game Day in August. Of course,
he began back at nineteen eighty seven, so nearly forty years.
He'll turn ninety on August seventh. And of course, you know,
everybody knows him for his picking of team win with
the head gear in the not so Fast my Friend,

(35:42):
when he disagreed with somebody on the panel as well. Incidentally,
in case you were wondering, he made his first headgear
pick in Columbus, Ohio back in October nineteen ninety five.
He's had four hundred and thirty elections and he has

(36:03):
gone to eighty six and one forty four uh in
those selections all time, to eighty six and one in
those picks. That's sixty six percent. Cam, that's two out
of three.

Speaker 2 (36:22):
Not bad.

Speaker 3 (36:23):
Good, it's pretty good. Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 1 (36:25):
And and the story talked about how he's worn the helmets,
the mascot heads, the other hats. I liked him when
he when he would really stretch it out there like
when he dressed up as the Leprechaun from Notre Dame
or the tree from Stanford, when he dressed up like
James Madison or Benjamin Franklin. Remember when he got on

(36:46):
the motorcycle with the Oregon Duck mascot.

Speaker 2 (36:49):
He's done that.

Speaker 1 (36:50):
He once held a live baby alligator in his hands,
picking Florida to win, and then he and Katy Perry
were picking from the Girl at Ole Miss. So anyway,
and here's something else I didn't know about it. Now
I knew we'd seen him always have that pencil in
his hand. He always picked with a pencil, a number
two pencil. Okay, cool, I use I've got one in

(37:13):
my hand right now.

Speaker 2 (37:13):
I picked.

Speaker 1 (37:14):
I like the feel and the writing of the number
two pencil, plus the ability to erase. We like when
I score a baseball game. But the other reason for
that is I did not know this. He was the
director of business development for Dixon Tekwonder Roga, which makes
those famous yellow pencils.

Speaker 2 (37:33):
Did you know that?

Speaker 3 (37:34):
I did not know that.

Speaker 2 (37:34):
I didn't know that either.

Speaker 1 (37:36):
So anyway, his final broadcast will be on August thirtieth.
And you talk about something being I guess fitting because
the first time he made a selection was in Columbus.
Is there any doubt in anybody's mind that College Game

(37:58):
Day is going to be in Columbus for the actually
the Ohio State game on August thirty. I think everybody's
expecting that.

Speaker 4 (38:04):
I think Craig, you know, Lee Corso, for a lot
of people like me who grew up, you know, watching
college game that's how you come to love the sport
and you come to love, uh, there's the pageantry of
college football. Because Lee Corso and Rhees Davis and Kirk
kurb Street and Desmond Fowler, I think have done always
a fantastic job of really telling the story of college football,

(38:28):
all the storylines, you know, traveling to different stadiums. As
a kid, you know, growing up in Charlotte, you know
I was gonna be able to go to the Big
House or the Horror Shoe, and you know even you
know dk R or out to the West Coast or
down to the south of the SEC school. So that's
how I got to know about the swamp and the
boot and you know, the rolls bawl stuff like that.

(38:49):
And it was the story the College Game Day that
told and a lot of it too was you know,
the head gear and lee corso. So you know, it's
sad to see him retire, but also it's been so
much fun to be able to to see him on
the set and see what the show has has become.

Speaker 1 (39:05):
Absolutely all right. Coming up next, we're gonna hear from
Dylan Valantis, the Longhorns pitcher and the outstanding reliever that
he is and we are. Also we'll hear some more
from Jim Schlastnaego a little later. I'm gonna, like I
normally do here when we're at the ballpark, pop down

(39:27):
at one point during the program to have my pregame
conversation wi Schloss and we'll hear more from him coming up.
So we'll do all of those things coming up, and
we've got some other topics to get to as well.
It is a Thursday afternoon tonight seven o'clock six to
forty five pre game start time on one of three

(39:47):
point one FM. Tomorrow six o'clock. It was moved forward
one hour from seven o'clock to six o'clock six o'clock
with a five forty five pre game and a first
pitch at six o'clock on one of three.

Speaker 3 (39:59):
Point one FM Saturday.

Speaker 1 (40:00):
It is a noon first pitch and we'll be on
the air at eleven forty five Saturday morning with a
noon first pitch. And you heard that right here on
this single thirteen hunderd the Zone.

Speaker 6 (40:18):
Welcome back to the Craig Way Show and the Voice
of the Longhorns. Craig Way, follow Craig on social media
and horn.

Speaker 1 (40:26):
Voice that came in hot just then?

Speaker 2 (40:32):
Was it like that automatically?

Speaker 4 (40:35):
Man the volume and we're just rocking out here on
this Thursday.

Speaker 2 (40:40):
I guess so, I guess so.

Speaker 1 (40:41):
All right, this is gonna be a big series this
weekend and part of a big weekend in the SEC
on but two of the series are Thursday Friday Saturday.

Speaker 2 (40:55):
Because of the Easter weekend.

Speaker 1 (40:56):
There are two series that are set for Friday Saturday Sunday.
One of those is Kentucky at Tennessee and the other
one is Florida at Mississippi State. Those are those are
the other two series that'll be going on this weekend
on Friday Saturday Sunday. Everything else is Thursday Friday Saturday,

(41:20):
including Arkansas and Texas.

Speaker 3 (41:23):
A and M.

Speaker 1 (41:24):
A and M has been hot of late. That series
will be up in Fayetteville. So obviously we'll have an
eye on that, and we'll have an eye on a
lot of the things going on in college baseball and
in the SEC. And I would say also that we'll

(41:46):
keep an.

Speaker 2 (41:47):
Ear and an eye during.

Speaker 1 (41:50):
Especially you know, right when it starts, because we'll still
be on the air in the four o'clock hour. Texas
Softball has a crucial SEC series with lsu happening across
the street from US at Macombs Field.

Speaker 2 (42:04):
That's a four thirty first pitch.

Speaker 1 (42:06):
Help me out on the HD signal where folks can
find that on the dial cam. I know, they obviously
can get it on Texas loong oornge dot com or
excuse well, they can, and they can also the Texas
Longrorns app and then connect to it through the iHeartRadio app.
That's how a lot of folks follow Andrew Hayes calling
LONGWRN Softball. But also we have an HD signal. Right, No,

(42:26):
it's only on the app. So if you down three
radio app, it's Retro Austin. That's what I was thinking of. Okay,
so it's Retro Austin off of the app when you
download off the app. Okay, all right, I just wanted
to make sure I had all all of that correct
on that with folks will listen. And it's in a
crucial series because you know, Texas comes off dropping two
out of three at home to Tennessee last weekend and

(42:54):
they're now thirty nine and five, and Long Worn Softball
has fallen out now only a half game back of
Texas A and M for the top of the SEC standings.
And also there are only one game up on Oklahoma,
so they're half game behind UH, They're one half game

(43:15):
behind UH, Texas A and M. And they're one half
game up or one full game up on Oklahoma in
the conference standing. So it's tight race enseoftball. Just it
is as it is in baseball as well. All Right,
speaking of baseball, a guy who's just been lights out

(43:35):
on the mountain for the Long Warrens freshman from California
out of the bullpen for Texas from Thousand Oaks went
to Harvard West Lake.

Speaker 2 (43:45):
This is a guy.

Speaker 1 (43:46):
Who has has just posted monster numbers for Texas. Dylan Valantis,
the freshman lefty, is three and oh with a one
point one five and eight saves in thirty one in
the third innings, He's allowed nineteen total hits scattered through

(44:07):
thirty one and a third innings. He's allowed six total runs,
four of those earned. He's walked, five, struck out forty,
allowed four extra base hits to doubles, to homers, and
opposing inners are only batting one seventy six against him
in conference play. Phalanthas hays a zero five to five ERA.

(44:28):
It was zero zero zero until he gave up that
game time home run in the ninth on Saturday Kentucky,
but he's one to oher with seven says. Seven of
his eight saves have come in conference play, so he'll
He's made nine appearances, seven saves in the nine appearances
one and oh with a zero five to five ERA,

(44:49):
sixteen and a third innings and conference play, scattering eight hits.
That's won every other inning He's allowed with only one
run that was the homer, two walks, twenty four strikeouts,
has given up one other extra base hit a double.
So Dylan Valantis has just been tremendous and he's been
obviously a pleasant surprise to.

Speaker 2 (45:09):
A lot of folks this season.

Speaker 1 (45:12):
And he had a chance to meet with the media
and answered some questions yesterday about how things have gone
for him in this freshman season Scrubs and he was.

Speaker 12 (45:19):
Wearing the bowling championship. Sure, what was your bowling skills Like?

Speaker 13 (45:25):
In the beginning, it's kind of rough, But towards the end,
I actually kind of helped the team out a bit
with a couple of strikes back to back to back,
so that it was a really fun tournament you had.
Kind of towards the beginning though, was a little rough.
I got a couple of gutter balls, but towards the Yeah,
at the end, it was way better.

Speaker 14 (45:48):
Grubbs just said at the midpoint of SECLA, can't vote
for yourself. You know who would be the MVP this
team right now? He said, you, So, I'll ask you
the question, who would.

Speaker 9 (46:00):
You vote for? As that gay?

Speaker 13 (46:03):
Yeah, it's so hard just naming one player, especially on
this team. I mean Grubs, he's been phenomenal, being able
to go in long relief multiple Indians have just shut
out baseball and throwing strikes like he always does. It's
just it's just awesome to watch. It's just hard between
Galvan and Grubs. I mean, I want to say both

(46:24):
of them for sure, just both phenomenal players.

Speaker 15 (46:27):
Galvan brings the energy and gets the.

Speaker 13 (46:30):
Spirit going and just catching and hitting has been unbelievable.

Speaker 15 (46:34):
So I would say definitely Grubs and gouv On.

Speaker 16 (46:38):
He also mentioned that if you were probably the player
that they asked why your successful, probably that he's never
met somebody who loves the game.

Speaker 9 (46:47):
As much as Yun. Yeah, what does that look like
to you?

Speaker 16 (46:50):
How much do you love this game and how does.

Speaker 13 (46:52):
That play out on a few Yeah, I love this
game a ton, and I do anything to get better
each and every day. So I go on with the
mentality of just coming to practice and learning something new,
just recovering and getting stronger each every day and each
and every day. So I love this game. I do
it for, you know, myself, my family and my friends

(47:14):
back at home. And I'm just super grateful to beat
where I am and I think I take the advantage
of it to the most of my ability.

Speaker 9 (47:23):
Where did that look help from?

Speaker 15 (47:26):
I'm just growing up.

Speaker 13 (47:27):
I'm starting to play when I was yeah, three and four,
and then my dad was just always there with me
and by my side, and you know, he wants to
see me succeed, and I hope I succeed too, So.

Speaker 9 (47:39):
I just do it for me and my dad.

Speaker 13 (47:41):
Really, it's just he's just always been there for me,
and I want to prove to him how good I
can be.

Speaker 9 (47:47):
How much you enjoy. But the late game, on especially
SEC play.

Speaker 15 (47:51):
You can't really beat it.

Speaker 13 (47:52):
I mean, like one run game, two run games, Todd games,
I mean, those are just you can't beat those feelings.
And you're on that mound and go And I'm just
super lucky to be in a position to where they
can trust me to be in that spot and give
me that ball and it's ninth inning, THI game, or.

Speaker 15 (48:10):
Try to get a quick couple outs.

Speaker 13 (48:12):
I'm super grateful to be in that spot where I
can go out there and just throw strikes, take.

Speaker 17 (48:17):
Us through the you give up the home run in
the ninth against Kentucky, you just mow down the rest
of the guys in that inning, take us through your
your mindset and pandeling that.

Speaker 15 (48:30):
I mean, I mean, yeah, baseball, it's not going to
go your way always.

Speaker 13 (48:34):
So yeah, him having that home run, there's a there's
a good hit here in that one, so you can't
be mad about it. And it's in the past now,
so you know, I when I go out there, and
you know, it's bound to happen to everyone.

Speaker 15 (48:48):
No matter how good you are or anything. So it's
just it's bound to happen.

Speaker 13 (48:53):
Just be able to control your feelings after that happens,
and just forget about it.

Speaker 15 (48:57):
Is played the biggest thing doing.

Speaker 18 (49:00):
Y'all are obviously ahead in first in the SEC and
at a half what point?

Speaker 9 (49:04):
What what's it gonna take to still be there in
five weeks from now?

Speaker 15 (49:07):
I think, just keep on doing what we're doing, you
know how fun.

Speaker 13 (49:11):
Or our bond together it's just like a brotherhood almost,
so it it it helps a ton, Uh when around
that mound and I got all my infielders and Galvan
just cheering me on and just helping me out to
go through the just to get through it. So I
I think just hitting, you know, pitching and hitting has
been really good.

Speaker 15 (49:31):
So just keeping those up and having a good time.

Speaker 18 (49:33):
Is that? Is that something y'all are talking about what
it would like, what would be like to to win
win the SEC?

Speaker 15 (49:38):
In your work?

Speaker 13 (49:39):
Uh, we don't really like to. I mean I don't
really like talking about it. You know, winning anything, we
just gotta earn it. So I Uh, we take it
one game at a time. Each day's opening day that
we have a game, so it's just a first game
of the season. So we maybe after the fact if
you do, but as of right now, it's just opening day.

Speaker 8 (49:59):
Well is always.

Speaker 14 (50:03):
Well, what does Ruger bring to this pitching staff, to
this team? You're already smiling? Yeah, would you know, just
describe him and his impact.

Speaker 13 (50:14):
He's just he's the funniest guy for sure. He's always
got something new to say. I always got something to
make you laugh. If if he sees you like a
little bummed out about something, maybe something outside of baseball,
he's always there and he'll cheer you up and give
you a hug or a little smack on the butt
or something, just saying like let's let's keep going. And
he just he's a jokester for sure, always has a

(50:35):
nice joke to say.

Speaker 14 (50:37):
Do you have a nickname for him?

Speaker 9 (50:41):
Not?

Speaker 13 (50:41):
I mean it's it's usually just like rude. But I mean,
we got a couple of nicknames about his mustache. Yeah,
that's a nice mustache he's got, so we we kind
of got some nicknames about that, and just about his
personality as well.

Speaker 15 (50:55):
That's a better him or.

Speaker 13 (50:57):
Groups that's hard. I like Ruger's. I think it's just
it fits his personality a lot. I mean, I don't
even remember what he's like without him having a mustache anymore.

Speaker 15 (51:13):
So, uh, I love that look on him for sure.

Speaker 19 (51:16):
It feels like a lot of your success, it's not
velocity to kind of like, what do you think has really.

Speaker 18 (51:20):
Helped you as far as development here on the mound
here this season?

Speaker 13 (51:26):
Yeah, I mean it's just always getting ahead of the hitter, like,
don't don't get behind that. That's when the hit start
to happen and you.

Speaker 15 (51:33):
Get walks as well. So just kind of not giving anyone.

Speaker 13 (51:36):
Free basis and making him earn for it, winning the
O and the one to one, just to get ahead
of them and you know, it's just gonna make it
a lot tougher for them.

Speaker 15 (51:44):
And being able to throw my pitches for strikes. It's
it definitely helps a ton.

Speaker 10 (51:48):
When you get a call to throw a particular pitch.
What is your most favorite pitch to throw up? That
curve ball for sure? Like one, one, like one, two
oh two? Those are my favorite for sure.

Speaker 13 (51:59):
I just a lot of confidence in that and I
can usually land it for strikes on much every time,
So it's it's it's a nice pitch to have for sure.

Speaker 12 (52:06):
Going back to what Chip said earlier with Max picking
you to be MVP, I mean, what does that feel
like to have an older guy like him say that
about you?

Speaker 15 (52:15):
Yeah, it it it means a lot.

Speaker 13 (52:17):
I mean, I he's he's such a nice guy and uh,
just a hell of foot ball player.

Speaker 15 (52:23):
So he's he's a.

Speaker 13 (52:25):
It means a lot, and it really helps me, you know,
just be positive about everything.

Speaker 15 (52:32):
But yeah, it's just you.

Speaker 13 (52:33):
Know, job's not finished, so it's kind of I hope
I can, you know, continue to do how I'm doing
and you know, just have fun out there and enjoy
it like it's my last.

Speaker 15 (52:41):
Yeah.

Speaker 12 (52:41):
And and then he he also mentioned that you also coaches,
specifically Max, I think kind of told you as to
do yourselves as a number one team in the country
at the beginning of this season, Did you expect to
be number one in the rankings?

Speaker 15 (52:53):
Yeah, I mean with the team that we have, I mean,
I I knew it was bound to be. We're we're
bound to be.

Speaker 13 (52:58):
Number one at some point, you know, just the way
that we perform and act and have fun and do
our jobs as hitters.

Speaker 15 (53:07):
It's not We're not selfish at all, or you know, for.

Speaker 13 (53:09):
The team that helps the times do your job, you know,
not trying to hit the big home runs, big big swings,
just kind of get base runners and timely hitting.

Speaker 17 (53:19):
You and gas Brino are from the same area.

Speaker 9 (53:23):
Did you know him before you came here?

Speaker 15 (53:27):
What was I didn't really know him like like that.

Speaker 13 (53:32):
I mean, I knew the name from Harvard Westlake, but
I never actually got to talk to him during high
school or anything.

Speaker 15 (53:38):
Back at home. I did know Tommy.

Speaker 13 (53:40):
He was at our rival high school across the street,
so I knew him and faced him a couple of
times in high school, so it was it was fun.

Speaker 15 (53:49):
But yeah, I didn't really know Will too too much.

Speaker 14 (53:52):
As anyone said that your curve looks like a fastball, like.

Speaker 13 (53:59):
Out of the hands or yeah, because I think it
has more like late break towards it, and some curveballs
you kind of see it pop up out.

Speaker 15 (54:06):
Of the hands.

Speaker 13 (54:07):
But yeah, I haven't really asked many like hitters or
catchers about that, But yeah, I think it looks more
like a fastball than it does kind of pop out
of the hand.

Speaker 15 (54:18):
So how did these match ups with PM carmer Go
in high school. Yeah, not too good for me. I
think he was. He got two doubles off the wall
in one game off me.

Speaker 13 (54:29):
It was my junior year. One was a fastball and
one was a curveball. Yeah, he did ownly that that series.

Speaker 15 (54:37):
But I, you know, I struck him out.

Speaker 13 (54:40):
I think like twice he got two hits off me
or something, so I guess it's even, but not really.
I think he's kind of got the upper hand on
me on that.

Speaker 12 (54:47):
What was the animals like when you guys became teammates
and you were actually.

Speaker 13 (54:51):
Interacting, it was it was cool, you know, it's it's
really it's nice time with someone from back home on
the team.

Speaker 15 (54:57):
You can relate to back at home from high school,
and it's it's really nice.

Speaker 13 (55:02):
I was during fallball scrimmages there's I was looking forward
to face Tommy because I wanted that revenge and I
got a couple at bats or I got a pitch
to him a couple of times in fall, so I
was just to get to get that revenge back at him.

Speaker 4 (55:16):
At the beginning of the interview, you may have heard
Falantis he was asked about the Bowling Champs. Sure, nope,
you're not tripping. The reporter did ask about bowling. That's
because Max Grubbs, who you might hear in the four
third hour of the day's program, was wearing a tank
top Texas Baseball Bowling Champs shirt. Now, I don't think

(55:40):
you can they settled at the ut co op or
a Nike and so he was asked about it. And
I guess from the offseason. At some point during the
fall season, the team had a team bonding exercise where
they went bowling in Max Scrubbs allegedly won the bowling
championship the bowling tournament, and so that's why Dn Falantis

(56:00):
was asked about the bowling. And when we do play
the audio for Max Grubs, you get to hear who
he called the two worst bowlers on the team. They
may they may surprise you. Craig is visiting with Jim
Slowsnegle right now, the Texas Baseball head coach, as the
Longhorns are hosting a red hot Auburn Tigers baseball club.

(56:20):
We're gonna hear more from Jim Slashnagle and Max Grubs
throughout the program here on this Thursday afternoon you're listening
on the free iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 9 (56:39):
We're back.

Speaker 6 (56:40):
It's the Craig Way Show with Hall of vame broadcaster
and voice of the Texas Longhearts Craig Way.

Speaker 1 (56:48):
Okay, we aren't even too repped up Friday yet, you
know yet? Cameron Parker continues to rev us up here
on the Maybe maybe you're feeling the same way I am, Cam,
because there's gonna be a baseball game, and I keep
having to remind myself today is Thursday, not Friday, because
I'm used to being at the ballpark on Tuesdays and
Fridays to do the program Tuesdays and Fridays pretty regularly.

Speaker 2 (57:12):
But it's a Thursday.

Speaker 1 (57:13):
In fact, the Loghorns have three of their five remaining
there's a halfway point of SEC play and three of
their five remaining series or Thursday, Friday Saturday.

Speaker 2 (57:26):
This one is Thursday through Saturday.

Speaker 1 (57:28):
Now next week weekend against Texas A and M is Friday,
Saturday and Sunday.

Speaker 2 (57:33):
Then Arkansas.

Speaker 1 (57:34):
The big Showdown series in Fayetteville is Thursday, Friday Saturday.
Then their home finale series when they have seen Your
Day and all of that, that's a Friday Saturday Sunday,
second weekend in May against Florida, and then they conclude
the regular season in Norman at Oklahoma on a Thursday
Friday Saturday, because the SEC Tournament begins early the next week,

(57:58):
so everybody's playing Thursday through Saturday, that final weekend of
the season. So they're getting ready to play the Auburn Tigers.
And you've heard me discuss the situation with regard to
the injured Longhorns. We know Max Blue is out for
a while. We know that Adrian Rodriguez has come back
from that bad bone bruise there around the hamate and

(58:22):
has been able to play some in the field and
can swing from the left side. And then of course
the updated situation with regard to Ethan Mendoza diving for
the ball and landing on his shoulder has him listed
as day to day now in the SEC Student Athlete
Availability Report, the injury report, he's listed as probable for.

Speaker 3 (58:42):
The nights game.

Speaker 2 (58:43):
So that was one of the questions.

Speaker 1 (58:44):
Just a moment ago, I was down on the field
with head coach Jim slas Nagel, And here's the conversation
I had with Jim, not only with regard to the
injured guys, but how his team has played through thirty
five ball games at thirty wins and five losses. It's
all about I know, through thirty five ball games that
we please well, the team that's played thirty wins and

(59:05):
thirty five games and overcoming, I think is probably what
stands out as much as anything else.

Speaker 2 (59:10):
With all the guys you've had banged up.

Speaker 7 (59:12):
Yeah, you know, I think, uh, you know, I think
most teams could probably say that. There's certainly teams out
there they've had big injuries, but we've had a lot
of them.

Speaker 8 (59:19):
Uh. And on a team that, you know, the first
year of a new.

Speaker 7 (59:23):
Coaching staff where your depth of talent isn't you know
where we'd like for it to be at least sec level.
It's you know, you no disrespect to anybody, it's just
a fact, uh, we got you know that the frontline
talent is significantly further ahead of the rest of the talent.
And so you know, the win into the season saying
to be real tough for us to be super successful

(59:44):
if we lose guys like Ballou and you know, you
know the marquee names. But we've you know, we've pitched,
we're pitching. I knew, I knew we would pitch. Well,
I didn't think we would, you know, it wasn't. We've
had some good surprises on the mound and and uh
so when.

Speaker 8 (59:58):
You can pitch, you always give yourself a chance.

Speaker 2 (01:00:00):
We give you an opportunity.

Speaker 1 (01:00:02):
Just to update fans a little bit on where things
stand the injury wise, the sec AS it's Student Athlete
Availability Report and Ethan was listed is probable for tonight,
And I know you mentioned yesterday's day to day and
with regard to his shoulder and then of course blup
trying to make progress with the thumb and then then
a rod also with his hand and where can you
bring everybody up there?

Speaker 2 (01:00:22):
Just on where things are with those guys.

Speaker 7 (01:00:24):
Yeah, I would say Mendoza is going to be able
to hit before he can throw, and then his hitting
will be day to day relative to how he feels.
You know, he may have a day where he feels
awesome and then maybe takes some swings or I don't know,
swings through a pitch or something happens on a particular
pitch that aggravates him a little bit, maybe down for
a little bit. So you just have to wait and see,
but if anybody can play through anything, it's him.

Speaker 8 (01:00:46):
The defense to throwing, you know, that may be a
little bit.

Speaker 7 (01:00:49):
Max is progressing every days, he's rehabbing his thumb. The
stitches are out, he's you know, doing whatever it is
that the trainers do, grip strength and getting movement, full
on movement and strength back in his thumb to the
point where he's we think, especially since it's since the
injury is in his top hand on his back. So

(01:01:11):
he's a right handed thrower by a left handed hitters,
so that's actually a good thing for us. Not as
much pressure on that hand when you hit, So maybe
he can hit before he can before he can play
the field.

Speaker 8 (01:01:20):
Of course, you're only allowed to with dhs, so what.

Speaker 7 (01:01:22):
May have to get creative on that end, and then
a rod is he's making progress every day. It's just
a bone bruise that there are some days where are
some particular swings where it bothers him in other days
where he's totally fine. And so it's one of those
deals where like he's seventy percent of a rod better
than one hundred percent of the other option relative to
the defense and relative to the options. So I think

(01:01:43):
a Rod will be in there more often than not.
I think Mendoza should be in there tonight unless something
happens between now and game time, and Max is probably
at the earliest I would say three weeks away and
as much as five weeks ago.

Speaker 2 (01:01:57):
Yesterday's media availability.

Speaker 1 (01:01:58):
One thing was notable is that nobody Auburn and and
you said, it's a really good team coming in and
it's a team that just finished sweeping LSU. What about
your impressions of the Tigers.

Speaker 7 (01:02:07):
Yeah, really strong baseball team, so we've played. I thought
LSU had a really strong baseball team, not a typical
l s U big thumper through through the lineup team,
So really good baseball team that could play baseball in
a lot of different ways.

Speaker 8 (01:02:22):
They could thump you, they could get the safety.

Speaker 7 (01:02:24):
Squeezes down, they run bases, play really good defense with
Milam and Dickinson. And the reason I say that is
Auburn swept them, so they're pitching lights out, especially out
of the bullpen, and they have two one. I think
the best hitter in our league is Ike Irish. I
don't I actually don't think it's close.

Speaker 10 (01:02:44):
Uh.

Speaker 8 (01:02:45):
I think he's a superstar big league player.

Speaker 7 (01:02:48):
He doesn't. You can't pitch him the same. It doesn't
matter left or right, it really doesn't. You can't defend them.
You can play shifts if you want, but he's gonna
take his hits the other way or he'll just hit
it over the shift.

Speaker 8 (01:02:58):
So really really good player.

Speaker 7 (01:03:00):
And then mc murray behind him is is he's performed
as well.

Speaker 8 (01:03:04):
Uh and and so they have speed.

Speaker 7 (01:03:07):
They just play really really really sound baseball, like you know,
like I would like to think people say about us,
and and they're playing well.

Speaker 8 (01:03:14):
So I'm playing with a lot of confidence.

Speaker 1 (01:03:15):
So there's your scouting report, if you will, with regard
to you know, to uh to Auburn, because nothing was
really asked about the Tigers yesterday. So uh now you
know a little bit more about this Auburn team that
comes in batting three oh three is a team e

(01:03:36):
r A t e r A is four four five
n SEC play where they are nine and six. They're
batting two seventy one, but they're on an uptick and
uh they're they're e r A. They've given up some runs,
but they didn't against LSU. They give up two runs
a game and that brought their uh TM E ra
a in SEC games down to five to one.

Speaker 3 (01:03:56):
One.

Speaker 1 (01:03:57):
Uh. The other thing is you heard him talking about
Ike Irish. Irish is a junior from Michigan and is
a catcher and outfielder in conference play well. First of all, overall,
he's bat three forty five impressive enough, put seven homers
in thirty runs, bat at ays, drown nineteen walks, and
been hit by a pitch five times. He got an

(01:04:19):
on base percentage of four fifty one and a slugging
percentage of six twenty two. In SEC games, ike Irish
is batting four oh eight with four of his seven
homers and eleven of his thirty RBI is coming in
conference play. He has a slugging percentage in SEC games
of eight sixteen eight sixteen. The slugging percentage so this

(01:04:43):
is a team that can swing the bats and get
some key pitching, as they did.

Speaker 2 (01:04:47):
To sweep LSU last weekend.

Speaker 1 (01:04:49):
All right, we'll be back to wrap up our number
two here from UFCU Dish fault field.

Speaker 2 (01:04:54):
I'm thirteen under the zone.

Speaker 1 (01:04:55):
The Texas Longhorns will be in action tonight as they
take on the Auburn Tigers, and that game will come
your way at seven o'clock. We'll have it for you
on one oh three point one FM. Our sister station,
Austin SAD Stations will have it for you one oh
three point one FM, and that will come your way
six forty five with the pregame start time, and the

(01:05:15):
first pitch will be at seven o'clock and the Longhorns
will be of course going with Jared Spencer. They're left hander.
The senior transfers four and one and a three point
oh a d ra A. Auburn's right hander Samuel.

Speaker 3 (01:05:31):
Dutton will go.

Speaker 1 (01:05:33):
Dutton is a senior right hander and he began his
collegiate career at LSU before he transferred in He's five
and two of a two three four earn run average,
and he has a complete game this season as well.
In fact, he's pitched fifty innings and Spencer's pitched forty
nine and two thirds innings, so those numbers pretty much
check out. But he'll be on the mound for Auburn

(01:05:55):
right hander. In fact, Auburn is going to go right
left right right hander scheduled for tonight's contest a left
hander tomorrow evening Kate Fisher against the long Orange lefty
Luke Harrison, and then on Saturday, Auburn has a right
hander Andreas Alvarez going and Ruger Riojas, the right hander
will go on Saturday for Texas. You heard from Jim

(01:06:18):
Schlasnegel the conversation I had with him just a few
minutes ago, and we brought that to you there and
if you missed it, you can catch it on our
podcast page at thirteen hundred the Zone AM thirteen under
the Zone.

Speaker 3 (01:06:29):
You can do that.

Speaker 1 (01:06:30):
But we're gonna hear some more from Jim Schlasnagel coming
up in a few minutes from the media availability yesterday
with some other specific questions about specific players and the team,
So we'll bring that to you. Also later this hour,
we'll hear from Max Grubbs, the long Orange junior right
hander who has looked really good of late on the mound.

(01:06:51):
He's five and oh with a one seven to one
ERA with four saves. He has been their long and
middle to closing guy to fit the show games, and
he was big in the Friday night went over Kentucky
because it was very cold and hard for pitchers to
get a grip on the ball and Jared Spencer did
not have his best outing had to come out after

(01:07:11):
four and two thirds innings. He had thrown a lot
of pitches and in those incredibly cold and windy conditions.
It was forty three degrees with fifteen mile an hour wins,
the wind chills in the low thirties. It felt awful.
But Grubs did a good job settling things down after that.
We'll hear from Max Grubs a little bit later on
this hour. Okay, Cameron, I know what a big fan
you are of Aaron Rodgers. And when I got here

(01:07:35):
to the ballpark and I turned on the television and
there he was, you know, on with Pat McAfee, who,
of course, you know, his his whole deal is his shtick,
his show, you know, even though it could come across
as somewhat clownish from time to time, but.

Speaker 2 (01:07:54):
He does have that deal with roder.

Speaker 1 (01:07:56):
Well aren't they paying Aaron Rodgers a million bucks ESPN
to do that segment every week with McAfee. Okay, so
he had him on, and you know how Aaron Rodgers
can be.

Speaker 2 (01:08:09):
He can be.

Speaker 1 (01:08:11):
Evasive, you know, doesn't really answer a lot of the
questions even when he gives you a long answer, that
kind of thing. But he did speak for the first
time since the Jets released him, and he was on
for about forty five minutes, and he said he was
really surprised by what the Jets did. He said, I

(01:08:32):
wasn't stringing anyone along, I wasn't holding anyone hostage. I
was honest from the jump about where I wasn't mentally
and some of the constraints I have in my life
right now that warrant my attention. So he talked about that,
and all of that's well and good, and you can
choose whether to take him at his word or not.
And let's just say we do take him at his word.

(01:08:54):
That doesn't necessarily mean that NFL teams are supposed to
sit idly by and wait for him to make up
his spot. They have their own timetable. They have to
decide what they're doing going forward. That's why I think, Cameron,
this thing is going to be fascinating to see if
Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers are willing to wait

(01:09:14):
long enough, well into the spring, for Aaron Rodgers to
decide if he wants to play football and a thing
come to an agreement and him signed with Pittsburgh.

Speaker 2 (01:09:22):
Because that seems to be all the rumor.

Speaker 4 (01:09:24):
It's funny because when I think of quarterbacks that would
work under Mike Tomlin's system, like personality wise, Aaron Rodgers
does not come to the top of that list in
my opinion, especially with how he's handling this offseason, the.

Speaker 3 (01:09:37):
Whole Yeah, you know, I might retire.

Speaker 4 (01:09:39):
And then you're hearing reports from Chef doing everyone else
that you know, talks are getting, you know, deeper and
deeper and more significant. And then here's Rogers going on
Pat McAfee and throwing Aaron glenn in the Jets organization
under the bus once again and complaining about this and
that and all of this talk. And it's like, man,
it's it's pretty funny. But then again, if you look

(01:10:00):
at the Pittsburgh Steelers death chart, you see Mason Rudolph
and Skyler Thompson at the starter in second trin position,
then you understand why Mike Tomlin is entertaining the idea
of signing Aaron Rodgers, because look, hey, their quarterback draft
history outside of Ben Roethlisberger has not been great the

(01:10:20):
last decade or so, so they're they're desperately looking for
a quarterback and you know, I don't know if Tomlin's
filling the heat. You know, obviously it feels like the
organization is very comfortable with Mike Tomlin, and Mike Tomlin
is very comfortable with the Rooney family. I believe that
owns the Pittsburgh Steelers. But at a certain point, Craig,
you know, you got to, you know, Pooper, get off

(01:10:42):
the toilet, because the Steelers, you know, they're making the playoffs,
but they're not winning playoff games.

Speaker 3 (01:10:46):
They've been, you know, kind of mediocre.

Speaker 4 (01:10:48):
And hey, maybe the organization is fine with just you know,
going to the playoffs every year, and you know there's
teams like the Browns who are just bagging to get
in the playoffs. But at a certain point you wonder, okay,
will the organization shouldn't get tired of these eight and
nine seasons or nine and eight seasons and making the
playoffs and losing a game. And I think a lot
of the issues, you know, since Roethlisberger retired has been

(01:11:12):
they haven't had a true quarterback that they can count on.
Russell Wilson last season was okay, you know, I think
he did a fine job, and Justin Fields was okay.
He did an okay job, but you know, as you
do need a quarterback. You look at the teams that
have won the Super Bowl, They've been guys like Patrick
Mahomes who have been able to elevate their team, and

(01:11:33):
the Steelers have not had that quarterback. So I think
that's why Mike tom and the Steelers are okay with
this whole charade from Aaron Rodgers.

Speaker 8 (01:11:42):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:11:42):
And then again with regard to the deal with the Jets,
you know, making their plans and going in a different
direction as quote was, I was kind of shocked. Now,
I'm not shocked because I didn't think that was a possibility.

Speaker 2 (01:11:54):
Listen.

Speaker 1 (01:11:54):
Of course, so they want to move on, that's totally fine,
but shocked because I just flew across the country. You
could have told me this on the phone if we
weren't even going to have a conversation. Seriously, And then
he said he was refuting reports that he asked for
a significant amount of money or a multi year deal.
He said, quite say, He said, I told every single
one of the teams I talked to it ain't about

(01:12:15):
the money. I'll play for ten million dollars, I don't care.
I never once said I need a multi year deal,
thirty forty million. That's absolute bull bleep. I said, I'll
play for ten wherever.

Speaker 2 (01:12:24):
That's it.

Speaker 1 (01:12:26):
So just write him a check for ten million and
you're good. You're ready to go. So he did confirm
he's had conversations with the Vikings, the Giants, and the Steelers.
He likes Brian Daboll with the Giants, and he has
a lot of respect, he said, for Mike Tomlin and
the Pittsburgh organization. But he just made up his mind

(01:12:48):
on whether he's ready to play or wants to play
or whatever. Pat mcavie at one point asked him, how
often do you think about football? Like every day, every
waking minute. He goes very little, very little. I don't
know about that. I I don't know about that.

Speaker 2 (01:13:07):
Well, here here's what I think.

Speaker 1 (01:13:10):
I think he thinks about a contract and the money
that he can make playing football a lot.

Speaker 2 (01:13:16):
But in terms of playing.

Speaker 1 (01:13:18):
Football and you know, helping a team win, I don't
think he thinks that much about it. I think he
thinks that if the time comes and I get to
a point where I can make a deal, and I
make a deal, then I'll worry about who I'm dealing with.

Speaker 3 (01:13:32):
He did.

Speaker 2 (01:13:32):
He brought up a point.

Speaker 1 (01:13:33):
About going to a workout all in California with DK
metcalf and showing up and he and he said he
has a lot of respect for DK. And he asked DK,
when do you start your workout and he said six am?

Speaker 2 (01:13:52):
And he said, you have a lot of guys work
with you.

Speaker 1 (01:13:55):
And he said, oh, there's a few that have come
through and they last for a week or two or
a few weeks, but then they end up bailing. And
Aaron Rodgers said that K metcalfell, Listen, I'm not gonna
come at six am, but but I would really like to.

Speaker 2 (01:14:09):
Work with you. And so they did a deal where
they worked for a few days at eight am. So
that's an example what I'm saying.

Speaker 1 (01:14:15):
I don't think he I think he believes that it
won't take him long to be in playing shape and
playing condition if he decides to play one more season
in the NFL. I think he believes it's not gonna
take me long at all. It's not gonna take me
long at all to do it. And that's what I

(01:14:35):
think he means when he says he doesn't think about
football the mess?

Speaker 2 (01:14:38):
Now does he think about the money in the contract.

Speaker 4 (01:14:40):
Yeah, I do think he does think about that, So
I think he thinks about himself.

Speaker 1 (01:14:46):
Yes, yes, the money that he would make I totally agree.
I completely agree with you on that. That's that's him.
That's the Aaron Rodgers. We've come to dough So anyway,
all right, coming up, we're going to hear more from
Jim Schlosnangle, the long orange head coach on the eve
of this important weekend SEC series against the Auburn Tigers Thursday,

(01:15:11):
Friday Saturday series tonight at seven.

Speaker 2 (01:15:13):
Tomorrow at six.

Speaker 1 (01:15:15):
Time, change move forward by one hour, and Saturday at
noon time, change move forward by two hours from two
o'clock to noon. That's to accommodate Auburn's travel schedule. Wind
is blowing out here by the way, cam. This is
what we normally.

Speaker 3 (01:15:30):
See, okay, right the left wind.

Speaker 1 (01:15:33):
Yes, it's a little more straight out. It's a little
more straight coming out of the south. In fact, I'm
looking at it right now. It says south to southeast,
steady at sixteen gust up to twenty six. It looks
like it's steady at about twenty looking at it right now,
and it's almost blowing straight out. So we could see
a monster shot tonight cam we could see somebody hit

(01:15:53):
it over the batter's eye in dead center tonight. It
would get some help put it that way. I could
see jaylen Flores, who's not one over there before sending
one out over there. I could see them knocking one
out or Gasparino, both of whom hit the ball you
know well to all fields, but they do hit the
center and the left. They pull to left and hit
the center more often than they do to right. So

(01:16:14):
it wouldn't surprise me see one put one up in
that jet stream and see if they could drive it
out up next we'll hear more from Coach Lass when
we continue here from UFCU Dish falk Field on thirteen
under the zone.

Speaker 6 (01:16:34):
Back to the Craig Way Show. Connect with Craig through
the text line by text Team Texas to eight one
five three zero followed by your message. Standard message and
data rates may apply.

Speaker 2 (01:16:48):
Thursday afternoon of.

Speaker 1 (01:16:49):
The ballpark here at UFCU dish falk Field. It is
Texas in action tonight against Auburn, and you'll hear its
sixty five air time seven o'clock first pitch. Keith Morland
will joined me for the call of that one before
we get to hearing more from Jim Slastnngle even and
I hadn't had a chance to talk about this. It
came out a couple of days ago. It's not just

(01:17:13):
a story. It's going to happen that Colorado is retiring
the jersey numbers of Travis Hunter and should do her Sanders. Now,
you just stop me where I go off the tracks here, Cam. Nobody,
absolutely nobody is questioning the decision to retire the jersey

(01:17:37):
number of Travis Hunter.

Speaker 2 (01:17:38):
He won a Heisman Trophy.

Speaker 9 (01:17:39):
If you've done.

Speaker 1 (01:17:40):
That, I think that that does merits the credit and
the attention given for that. It should Doer Sanders that
everybody who is criticizing this thing is having a problem with.
They would be only the fifth and six players in
Colorado's one hundred and thirty five year history to have

(01:18:01):
that honor. And a lot of the past players and
graduates who heard when they announced that the number twelve
for Hunter and the number two for Sanders would be
retired before the spring game has some you know people upset.
You know, guys like Dion Figures and some other guys
who played and were great players of Colorado have never

(01:18:23):
had Byron Wizard White, Rashaan Salam who won a Heisman Trophy.
By the way, those guys have had their jersey numbers retired,
along with Bobby Anderson, Joe and Joe Romig. Those are
the only guys, but there's a lot of other guys
who haven't had their jersey numbers retired. And coach Prime

(01:18:47):
Dion Sanders started off after practice today with a quote,
can we start off with me just shaking everyone's hand
that played here before?

Speaker 2 (01:18:56):
Just give them a hug.

Speaker 1 (01:18:58):
They got to come back for that, right, Let's start
with That's what I want to do. So anyway, it's
it's It's been brought about quite a bit of conversation.
Pretty interesting, uh, that that bean has decided that his
son deserves to have his number retired.

Speaker 4 (01:19:13):
Yeah, I'm curious, Craig, if s Door Sanders wasn't the
son of the head coach, would his jersey number be retired?
I mean, that's the question I think a lot of
people are asking. You know a lot of guys. I'm
looking at the career passing yards list for Colorado. There's
four guys who are ahead of Shador's name now of course,
granted they played four years and Shador only played two years.

(01:19:34):
So if Shador played four years, would he probably have
let the university as the all time passing yards leader? Probably?
But he only played two years. And what did Colorado accomplish?

Speaker 3 (01:19:46):
What do they win?

Speaker 1 (01:19:47):
Now?

Speaker 4 (01:19:47):
If you want to say, well, they went from a
one win program to you know, seven eight wins and
Bowl eligible and this, and then yeah, that's great, You're
so you're you're lying. Your standard is just being buligible?
Is what makes you a good enough quarterback to have
your jersey retired? I'm not sure about that. Like Joe

(01:20:07):
Klapp is ahead of George Sanders in passing yards, I'm
sure Joe Clotte is thinking, you know, what the heck,
why isn't my jersey number retired?

Speaker 2 (01:20:14):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (01:20:15):
Yeah, there's there's a lot of players asking that question.
Dion says he's he's never come across backlash. On on
a play on the announcement of any player's number being retired,
he said, first time I've ever seen it sore like
it being a sore subject. I don't know if you
know it, but I think every jersey I darn Near

(01:20:36):
played in is retired. So I'm pretty familiar with this.
It's never been sore. Uh that okay, well that that's
Dion playing, but that not to do or so anyway. Uh,
it'll uh it'll continue to cause some conversation, no doubt
about that. All right, Let's hear some more from Longhorn's
head coach Jim Slason Aegele. This from the media availability yesterday.

(01:20:57):
And uh we heard Jim last hour when I went
down and had a quick visit with him, talking about
the day by day routine that his guys are under.
And he was asked, you know, as this team has
risen up and has been able to achieve this number

(01:21:18):
one ranking, what do they do intentionally? What is the
intent on the practice field every day? What do they
do intentionally to be good?

Speaker 8 (01:21:28):
Yeah? I mean it's great you say that. We have
a saying.

Speaker 7 (01:21:30):
It doesn't happen by accident, happens by intention, you know,
just we don't just grab things out of the air
to work on them each day. It's okay, where are
we as a team? We self scout ourselves a ton.
Who are we playing? So obviously we're doing some defensive
work in left field right now. We're going to have
probably someone new playing second base, whether it be Rodriguez

(01:21:52):
or do Plantier or somebody like that. Got to get
them turning double plays. We got to get them to
make sure they're in the right position on a bunt defense,
on a first and third defense. You know, what are
the things that if I was coaching against Texas, knowing what.

Speaker 8 (01:22:05):
I know, what would I try to expose?

Speaker 7 (01:22:07):
You know, and you want to put players in position
to be successful. So it's hard for Adrian to know
where to go in a bunt defense.

Speaker 8 (01:22:15):
We don't practice it. So just just things like that.

Speaker 7 (01:22:19):
We put some We put something good in last week
before we played Kentucky. We were anticipating them doing something
and we executed it and got a free out in
the game on Sunday. That was a huge play. So
we're constantly believe me, you know my job. You know,
most people that know me may say he's kind of

(01:22:41):
a half empty guy.

Speaker 8 (01:22:42):
It's not half empty.

Speaker 7 (01:22:43):
I feel like when you're the leader as the coaches,
your job is to look at the op what are
the obstacles, Where are we weak?

Speaker 8 (01:22:49):
Where can we be better?

Speaker 7 (01:22:51):
And you just attack those all the time, knowing that
these guys hit like crazy, like they're in the cages
on their own.

Speaker 8 (01:22:56):
We don't need to really hit that much.

Speaker 7 (01:22:59):
It's more about playing good situational baseball and what are
those defensive things where we can get better.

Speaker 1 (01:23:05):
So here's a team that's thirty wins and five losses.
They're sitting on top of the SEC standings at thirteen
and two in conference play at the midway mark. Three
of the five remaining conference series are at home. So
things would appear to be set up really nicely, really
well for this team going forward. But Schloss is going

(01:23:27):
to caution everybody on the adversity that is sure to
be just around the corner in the second half of
the season.

Speaker 7 (01:23:35):
Well, I respect our opponent, I respect our league, I
respect the game. To think that the way some of
these guys have pitched against the competition that we play,
you know, I mean, there's just going to be days
where they get you. You know, Kate Anderson goes out
and throws the CG shutout against Oklahoma and goes to

(01:23:57):
Auburn last.

Speaker 8 (01:23:57):
Week and you see how close the game games are.

Speaker 7 (01:24:00):
I mean, look at the traffic that Spencer's had on
the basis for example, and this past weekend and he
just kept making pitches to get out of it.

Speaker 8 (01:24:08):
And so it's just the time, you know, the timely hits.

Speaker 7 (01:24:10):
The games are so close, and where we are offensively,
you know, there's where we're down a couple of bats
that that are good, but there are also bats that
change the game with one swing, and so when you
lose some of that, then you're gonna have to play
really good situational baseball. The scores of the games could
be a little closer and a little more tight, and

(01:24:31):
so just baseball itself doesn't lend it to win in
all those games. So, I mean, you look at the
teams we play, Auburn, A and M. Florida is still
super talented. Arkansas's easily, well not easily, one of the
top two or three most talented rosters in the country
by far. Oklahoma's having an unbelievable year, just swept Bandy.

(01:24:51):
So to think that the back half is going to
be like the first, I mean, I hope it would
be great, But again, my goal, we're still trying to
get to that fifteen wins and sixteen seventeen maybe beyond
that and.

Speaker 8 (01:25:04):
See what happens.

Speaker 1 (01:25:05):
Now we are talking about a guy who has SEC
coaching experience. Of course at Texas A and M, he
doesn't have, you know, a great wealth of it, but
he's got three years over there. And so Schloss was asked, how,
in his opinion, have other SEC teams handled that adversity

(01:25:25):
that he just referenced in the second half of the season.

Speaker 9 (01:25:28):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (01:25:29):
I mean I've only been in the league three years,
so I'm pretty new to the conference. But but yeah,
you just see him. You just got to get off
the mat and you respect.

Speaker 8 (01:25:38):
What it is.

Speaker 7 (01:25:39):
And truly, like I heard Tim Gorban, the coachy Vanderbilt
has been in the league for over twenty years, say
one time at the end of the conference tournament, he's like,
I don't care what regional we're in. Put me in
the American League East. I just don't want to play
any SEC teams anymore. And that it really does. It
really is that way, you know, to where you're like,
hey man, really the I would love to win conference championship.

(01:26:02):
That's awesome, but that doesn't get you to Omaha. It
puts you in a regional. It might get you a
good seed, but you've got to get in a regional
and then you see what happens and we've all seen,
you know, we've all seen plenty of teams that aren't
highly seeded get to Omahall or even win a national
title like Oh Miss. So that's the goal is we
just have to We've got to get to that point
of the year, hopefully get in a regional, have our

(01:26:23):
team healthy, maybe we get some of those guys back,
and then play our best baseball.

Speaker 1 (01:26:28):
Any coach will tell you that it's the sum of
the parts that make the team that makes for winning.
That one guy doesn't do it all, or two guys
don't do it all, It is the sum of the
parts overall. That said, you've heard Slash talk about how

(01:26:48):
the best players he's had, the ones who've had to
fight through the injuries, are the ones that they're looking
forward to continue to lead the way. So, in Jim
Slasnagel's mind, has there been a team MVP to this
point in the.

Speaker 7 (01:27:01):
I mean be hard not to say, you know, Spencer
or Galvan, I mean Galvan. There's never been a good
baseball team without a good catcher, and there's never been
a great baseball team without a great catcher. So you know,
two of the best I mean, I've had. We've had
some really good coat, really good catchers at different places
I've been, but there's two that really separate themselves. And

(01:27:24):
one's Brian Holliday from TCU, one of the greatest pure
leaders and catchers that I've ever been around, played in
the big leagues. And then Galvan is right there, right
there with him right now, and we will see how
it plays out, but Galvan's right there with him. Had
a kid named Troy Claunch at A and M who
was elite. Jackson Appel was that kind of player. But Galvan,

(01:27:46):
especially here and who he is and how he's handled
himself and how he's handled the pitching staff, I'd have
to pick him well.

Speaker 1 (01:27:52):
In talking about Galvon, I mean, what a season he's been.
He started off the season at number nine in the
batting order, and he just slowly worked his way up
toward he's batting second in the lineup, and right now
he's hitting three thirty seven with eleven homers and thirty
two runs battered. On He's leading the Long Horns in
batting average in SEC play. Galvan is hitting three seventy

(01:28:17):
in conference play, with six of his eleven homers and
twelve of his thirty two RBIs coming in SEC games.

Speaker 2 (01:28:27):
So what change?

Speaker 1 (01:28:28):
Why has Galvan's approach been different in what has worked
for him?

Speaker 7 (01:28:33):
Yeah, I mean he had after his third at BET,
I think he saw twenty six pitches. So I think
that starts with removing the fear of striking out, and
that's why we you know, I believe that that's the
first thing you have to remove from a player. And now,
if you're a coach who doesn't you just can't stand
strikeouts and just wants the ball put in play, that's
okay too, But for us, it's it's it's removing the

(01:28:57):
fear of the strikeout. Understanding you can do damage with
two strikes just as much as you can with less
than two, and so when you're not in a when
you're not in a hurry to hit, then you can get.

Speaker 8 (01:29:09):
Pitches to hit.

Speaker 7 (01:29:10):
And then he's put himself in a physical position with
his work with Troy to allow himself to be on
time for fastballs and adjust to off speed pitches and
he'll swing through a pitch, but he doesn't panic. And
I think in years past he was so panicky about
striking out and not seeing the breaking pitches to where

(01:29:31):
he would get his bats over quick and now he
understands if he strikes out, he strikes out and move on.

Speaker 8 (01:29:35):
To the next one.

Speaker 1 (01:29:36):
Yeah, so there's that. And you heard him mention Troy
a Troy. Of course he's talking about too Low. Troy Tulowitzki,
who was on David Pierce's staff, was a great addition.
You could just see how the players gravitated to him.
Remember just vividly in Greenville at the super Regional on
twenty twenty one, how in the just in the hotel

(01:29:57):
lobby where all the guys would just gather around him
with list into Tuloh and all this sort of stuff.
And Tula was bound for leaving after the coaching staff
had had been dismissed at Texas, but he came back
and Selas Stageles was asked how that whole process worked
where too Low ended up returning to Texas.

Speaker 7 (01:30:18):
Yeah, so first got here, got in the office, after
all the you know stuff that went on, Troy was here.
Obviously we're going thousand miles a minute recruiting and trying
to get settled in and get things get players here,
and had a chance to sit down with Troy for
a couple of hours and just say I just want
to get to know you, you know, and at you know,

(01:30:39):
I said, at this time, you know, at that time,
we had you know, Mike was here, and and we
had two other staff members coming, Chuck Box and another
guy on the A and M staff, and then and Troy,
you know, he obviously wanted to stay, and I think
he he he had other options too, and I respected
that and had nothing to do with who I thought

(01:30:59):
was the better coach or not. It was about loyalty
to to the coaches from me, you know, from from
A and M that wanted to come and uh, and
so I didn't. I wasn't gonna leave any of those
guys without a job. And then I said, you know,
let's just sit tight and see what happens here the
next couple of days. And and then things started to
you know, move in Mike's way, uh at A and M.

(01:31:22):
And and then I got the phone call on that
Saturday morning and we were I was at a head
coach's retreat, uh with del Conteent and all this, all
the other coaches and had to duck out of that
thing and said, hey man, I gotta go hire a
coach and so I had Nolan Kane and meet me
out at Troy's house, and uh we talked for several

(01:31:45):
hours and it wasn't about necessarily about baseball. The baseball
is the thing I was concerned with the least. It
was more about, Hey, this is what our program will
look this is what working in the hour program will
look like from a recruiting standpoint, from a time investment
from recruiting weekends and football weekends and how long those
are from the time the recruit show up on Friday
to leave on Sunday. And he's got a young family

(01:32:07):
and a super talented young son who's a great player
that he wants to see play. And so it just
kind of I wanted to meet his wife, wanted her
have you you, wanted to make sure it's a good,
good relationship, like you know, these are people you see
every day more than your family. So we had those
conversations and gave him some time to think about it,
and then he called within an hour or so and

(01:32:29):
set them all in and we rolled from there. So
it's a you know, everything in life happens for you,
not to you, so you know, it's worked out great,
worked out great for Mike uh and Will Fox, Who've
got to promote it over there to be a coach,
And uh, it's worked out great for us.

Speaker 8 (01:32:44):
I couldn't imagine it being any better.

Speaker 2 (01:32:46):
Yeah, worked out really really well.

Speaker 1 (01:32:47):
Okay, So then the final thing is what is the
most impressive thing that Jim Slavsnagle finds in Troy Kilowitzki.

Speaker 7 (01:32:56):
Yeah, passion for the game, passion for teaching, passion for
truly wanting to be a coach. Right, there's so there's
very very few, very I mean you can count them
on one hand in my opinion, the guys who have
been successful, not just major league players, but successful major
league players and come back to college baseball. Most of

(01:33:19):
most of those guys want to hit a fungo and
play golf in the morning, and at least they used to. Uh,
there's more now that are invested because they well, number one,
you can make good money and college baseball now, I
think they're attracted to that. But Kirk Sarlos was a
great one, did a great job for us at TCU,
and now he's done an awesome job at as the
head coach at TCU, and and Troy's right, I mean,

(01:33:41):
Troy was here you know, he was here really late
last night working both with his son and a few
and a few of the guys that that wanted some
extra help. And he's he's he's he's here as much
more than anybody else in our on our staff.

Speaker 3 (01:33:55):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:33:55):
So the coaching staff has congealed nicely and it's it's
a big part of why this team has won thirty
of its first thirty five ball games under Jim Schlosnagel.
Coming up, we'll hear from one of the guys who
hasn't received the greatest amount of tension.

Speaker 2 (01:34:09):
He's not a front line guy.

Speaker 1 (01:34:11):
In terms of what his role is in terms of
what he's has to perform, but he has performed it
really well. That's next when we continue on thirteen under
the Zone.

Speaker 6 (01:34:24):
Back to the Craig Way Show, connect with Craig through
the text line by text Team Texas to eight one
five three zero, followed by your message. Standard message and
data rates may apply.

Speaker 1 (01:34:40):
Now, let's see on this Thursday afternoon, Adrian Rodriguez in
with that first group, Tady taking batting practice of course
from the left side right now. Yep, good solid rip
out there to right field for a rod who.

Speaker 2 (01:34:57):
Will be playing.

Speaker 1 (01:34:58):
We have not received the lineup chat, but I would
imagine we'll see him either at second base or in
left field to night for Texas, one or the other
in the lineup, and I would imagine that we will
probably see Ethan Mendoza back in the lineup and playing
as the DH, because that shoulder is not allowing him

(01:35:22):
at least not at the moment to be able to
be back in the field fielding a position, but no
trouble swinging a bat. So we'll see la Is Ryland Galvan,
the aforementioned Ryland Galvan taking his VP cuts. Right now,
Longhorns softball is going on across the street from US
at Red and Charlie McCombs Field. They've gone to the

(01:35:43):
bottom of the first and he no score. Texas and
lsu key series there for the Longhorns at thirty.

Speaker 2 (01:35:49):
Nine and five and a half game behind Texas A and.

Speaker 1 (01:35:51):
M for first place in the SEC standings and one
full game in front of Oklahoma, who is in third place.

Speaker 2 (01:36:01):
So we'll keep you up dated on that.

Speaker 1 (01:36:03):
But back to baseball and one guy we said that
isn't a front line guy in terms of of what
his contributions are being asked of. In other words, he's
not a Friday night starter, he's not a shutdown closer,
but he is a guy who can start a ball game,

(01:36:23):
and he is a guy who can shut you down.
That's back Scrubbs, who is five and zero in a
one seven to one era and he has not made
the start this season. He was a spot midweek starter
last year, and he had been a Friday night starter
for Texas before and he has four saves this year.
He's a guy who's just kind of gone along and

(01:36:44):
done what was asked him.

Speaker 2 (01:36:45):
And this was his media availability.

Speaker 1 (01:36:46):
With the media yesterday with the long orange right handed
from Arlington Martin Max Grubbs.

Speaker 15 (01:36:53):
So, Texas balling the champion is that?

Speaker 9 (01:36:55):
That's the one thing. That's the one thing I need
to ask. What's that?

Speaker 11 (01:36:59):
We had a competition in the fall, We had I
think like six different teams.

Speaker 9 (01:37:04):
Just led my team to victory. It's all I can say.
Got the shirt?

Speaker 15 (01:37:07):
Alright, sir.

Speaker 9 (01:37:08):
You can get close to three hundred or not even close.
Anybody notably bad.

Speaker 11 (01:37:14):
Kimball Schustler and Jared Spencer Jared Spencer unbelievably bad, but
good pitchers.

Speaker 15 (01:37:19):
So it's okay.

Speaker 11 (01:37:21):
Yes, bumpers, No bumpers, No bumpers maybe for Spencer.

Speaker 14 (01:37:24):
Though, Max, what's impressed you most about.

Speaker 15 (01:37:30):
The pitching staff?

Speaker 11 (01:37:31):
I think our ability to recommit and just make every
day our opening day, you know, like we don't stack
days on top of each other. There's no there's no
past bad outing, there's no looking forward to the future.

Speaker 9 (01:37:42):
It's all you have is today.

Speaker 12 (01:37:44):
Who talks about maximin hers so much, but what about
him as a coach makes him as successful as.

Speaker 11 (01:37:50):
He's been, Just his mental aspect of the game and
what he brings to life on and off the field.

Speaker 9 (01:37:55):
Just allowing us to recommit and make every day our
opening day.

Speaker 11 (01:37:58):
It's it's it's always fresh with him, It's always new,
and it's always exciting.

Speaker 15 (01:38:03):
You had a.

Speaker 19 (01:38:04):
Couple guys this past week and that had like either
pitched ones an SEC player not at all and came
in and were there for multiple innings and we're really impressive.
What impress you most, whether it's Thomas or Sonier that
this weekend about what they were able to.

Speaker 11 (01:38:15):
Do and d like them too, Yeah, I mean definitely
just like impressed and proud of those guys. You know
that I know they can do it up a mental season.
They can do it, and I think that's most important
is that they knew they could do it. You know,
they had that belief in their in their minds and
everybody had that belief in them.

Speaker 9 (01:38:29):
Is that they could do it, and you know they
went and did it.

Speaker 18 (01:38:33):
There are certain mentality to have as a reliever, knowing
that hey, maybe asked to go three four innings or
you know, pitch pitch along as opposed to just give
in one or two outs.

Speaker 11 (01:38:44):
I'd say there is some mentality difference between a starter
and a reliever. But at the same time, it's one,
you know, just one pitch at a time. You're just
recommitting to another pitch. You're not thinking about the next
inning or the you know, the next out. You're just
making you out pitch one at a time and then
recommitting to the next You.

Speaker 18 (01:38:59):
Guys, sorry, go ahead, go ahead.

Speaker 19 (01:39:03):
You guys were a confident group earlier this season, but
how have you seen that kind of grow with wins
and tangible evidence that you guys are the team you
thought you were gonna be.

Speaker 11 (01:39:12):
Max has always said something great, and you know, it's
like we might be ranked the number one team in
the country right now. But we've known that since the
beginning of the season, regardless off we lose ten games
in a row, if we win ten games, or we
know in our hearts, in our minds that we are
the number one team in the country at the end
of the day.

Speaker 16 (01:39:26):
So you're in the mind and you get a call
and throw pickular pitch or prison you don't like that
pitch to throw used to throw it, or.

Speaker 9 (01:39:32):
Say no, I don't check off Max.

Speaker 11 (01:39:34):
I trust him completely, and at the end of the day,
like there's no such thing as a pitch shape or
a velocity.

Speaker 9 (01:39:40):
It's just a you know, it's just a profile strike.

Speaker 8 (01:39:43):
You know.

Speaker 9 (01:39:43):
That's all we want is just to get out and.

Speaker 11 (01:39:45):
So whatever whatever he calls the things to think that
we can get out to, I'll throw it.

Speaker 14 (01:39:50):
What are you most proud of in your you know,
kind of changing your mindset and your approach.

Speaker 15 (01:39:55):
To this year.

Speaker 11 (01:39:57):
I'm proud of the team. Like it's not even about me,
it's about everybody. I'm just proud of everybody's trusting one
another and they're buying to this team.

Speaker 9 (01:40:05):
This is something, you know, it's special to me.

Speaker 11 (01:40:07):
I think we've got an amazing staff and an amazing
pitching staff, everybody.

Speaker 9 (01:40:12):
I'm just am proud of. I'm just proud of everybody.

Speaker 18 (01:40:14):
Honestly, mat Is obviously y'all or on copy the succeed
five weeks in. What's it going to take to still
be there five weeks from now?

Speaker 11 (01:40:23):
Like I said before, just recommitting to the day by day,
you know, taking care of our routines, taking care of
our bodies, and just you know, making sure we're ready
to go each and every day.

Speaker 14 (01:40:31):
At the midpoint of SEC play, you can't vote for yourself.

Speaker 15 (01:40:36):
Who would you vote for as MVP?

Speaker 11 (01:40:41):
I definitely wouldn't vote for myself, but if our team, I'd.

Speaker 9 (01:40:45):
Say Dylan Blantis. I think he's the MVP.

Speaker 11 (01:40:48):
I mean, you know, to come in as a freshman
and do and to do what he's doing is amazing.

Speaker 9 (01:40:52):
I've never seen anything like it. What do you think
it is about him that makes him so.

Speaker 15 (01:40:56):
Hard to hit?

Speaker 11 (01:40:58):
I think he enjoys the game more than anybody. It's
not anything special about what he does. It's just he
has got a love for the game that I haven't
seen before, and I'm really impressed by it.

Speaker 12 (01:41:07):
You said the game of the season, Bell's coaches told
you to view yourselves or.

Speaker 15 (01:41:11):
Something as the.

Speaker 12 (01:41:11):
Number one team in the country.

Speaker 15 (01:41:13):
But did you expect to beat the.

Speaker 8 (01:41:15):
Number one team in the country at some point?

Speaker 9 (01:41:18):
I mean, I don't really know.

Speaker 11 (01:41:20):
I just think of playing the game one pitcher at
a time, and you know, being where my feet are.
But like we said, like I knew we could do it.
I knew we could be the number one team, and
I think we always were, always will be. You know,
it doesn't matter what the ranking is. It's just how
we treat ourselves, how we talk to ourselves.

Speaker 12 (01:41:35):
Have y'all had any extra conversations this week about, you know,
maybe some of the pressure of the weight that comes
with being number one.

Speaker 11 (01:41:42):
I mean there's always a target on your back when
you're here at the University of Texas. I mean it's
the greatest, the greatest school in the country, so there
is pressure, but it's nothing we've never felt before.

Speaker 16 (01:41:52):
You mentioned that the web just has this love for
the game you've never seen before. How does that play
out on the field, How does a play.

Speaker 11 (01:41:57):
On more I think it's just confidence in himself. But
at the same time, he's not even thinking about it.
He just is going out there and having fun. Doing
what he does, wouldn't a couple more what.

Speaker 14 (01:42:11):
Stands out about Gasparino and maybe some of the you know,
progress he's made this year.

Speaker 9 (01:42:17):
I mean, I think Gasparino is a great player.

Speaker 11 (01:42:20):
He's obviously, you know, one of the leaders on our team,
Barry Toolsy, just an all around good guy. And you know,
it's just his progress to me is you know, it's
just Gasparino, Like that's all I can say. He works hard,
and you know, I think he plays the game the
right way.

Speaker 14 (01:42:34):
So and Shustler has moved to first and how well
he's you know, fielding that position, and you know, just
your thoughts on his impact.

Speaker 11 (01:42:46):
I mean, Shoester will play anywhere. He's stick him, he
always says, put him on the mountain too. He'd love
to pitch, but I'll just tell him, you just played
first base. Keep doing your thing.

Speaker 9 (01:42:54):
But he's a he's a roughneck, that's what we call it.

Speaker 1 (01:42:57):
That's a good way to describe him, for sure. Long
Oorne taken batting practice on the field here before they
get ready for this game tonight. Again, Solvern, We always
