(03:21):
leaning the ball Drid in the center.

Speaker 2 (03:22):
That goes Lnger.

Speaker 6 (03:23):
She's not gonna get to it over the fence. MIA's
got a home run and Texas leads. Here at the
fourth inning.

Speaker 9 (03:29):
From UFCU diche Font Field. It is the finale of
the three game weekend series between the Texas Longhorns and
the Georgia Bulldogs.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
Georgia with the two to one lead on the scoreboard.
Here's the stretch.

Speaker 9 (03:41):
First pitch coming to Flores swings here in the lists
of flyball to Wright center, chasing McCarthy into the alley.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
Back to the warning track. Dude can sing good night
to it.

Speaker 9 (03:52):
Windided perhaps, but it's a home run off oo Taco
of the right field wall and the Longhorns.

Speaker 2 (03:58):
Are backed in front.

Speaker 9 (04:00):
The two three balls, two strikes, two outs, Balantis the stretch,
the three to two pitch strike.

Speaker 2 (04:11):
Three called slight offer, goes.

Speaker 10 (04:14):
Down looking and Dylan Vlampis closes out his fourth consecutive
inning and is able to do it with a strike
out every time.

Speaker 9 (04:26):
Here's the three vault, one strike pitch. Galvan swings. Let's
a high fly ball, this one out the deep right center.

Speaker 2 (04:32):
Back to the warning track. You can say good night
to it.

Speaker 11 (04:35):
A walk off home run to end it, it's a
sweep of the third right Georgia Bulldogs. Ryland Galvon walks
it off over the right field wall and Texas sweeps
Georgia to win the series. It was quite a weaken
on the diamond baseball and softball for Texas. Good afternoon, everybody,

(04:59):
Welcome to the pro here on Sports Video AM thirteen
hundred Zone. Glad to be back in the studio with you,
Craig Way, Cameron Parker. Like we said, we can count
the number of days on one hand the times that
we've been in the studio of the past month. But
we're back and we'll back by and large. I will
be out at UFCU dish f Field tomorrow, but by

(05:20):
and large, over the next couple of weeks will be
largely in studio. And what a weekend it was for
both Texas Baseball and Texas Softball Softball sweeping out the
Missouri Tigers with a double header sweep yesterday. Tea in
Cavan with a no hitter in Game one of the series,
then comes back and saves Game two and then goes

(05:42):
the distance one hundred and thirty pitches and wins Game three.
I don't think there's any doubts she'll be SEC Pitcher
of the Week. SEC Freshman of the Week on the
baseball side went to Dylan Balantis, who was nails all
the way through the course of the weekend for the
Long Horns and wound up being the winning pitcher yesterday,

(06:03):
so he earns SEC Freshman of the Week honors, does Philantis,
and leading the Long Horns to that sweep, he had
a save and win against Georgia in his two outings
nine strikeouts over five and a third scoreless innings against
the number two offense in the country. Now on Friday,

(06:27):
he recorded the final four outs on eight pitches to
pick up his seventh save, and then yesterday afternoon he
retired twelve to fourteen batters he faced.

Speaker 2 (06:36):
The two who reached. One was a four pitch walk.

Speaker 9 (06:38):
It was odd to the number nine hitter in the
seventh inning after he'd struck out the first two batters,
and then then he came back on his strike how
to get out of inding. And then in the ninth
he gave up a hit and or maybe it was
a tenth an infield single and then came back and
finished it off for there so he.

Speaker 2 (07:01):
Now in conference play.

Speaker 9 (07:03):
Valantas is now allowed to run in thirteen in the
third innings, one to zero and six saves in conference
play and issued only two walks and twenty strikeouts over
his first seven SEC appearances. Then there was the hitting
will Gasparino continues to swing the hot bat also Jalen
Flores with a couple of big home runs, and then

(07:25):
of course the Coudah with the walkoff that was Ryland
Galvan opposite field. We said it before the game yesterday,
Mike cardball hard and that anything that's going to go
out is going to go out.

Speaker 2 (07:35):
To write.

Speaker 9 (07:36):
All five home runs that were hit yesterday and we're
all hit or four two by Georgia, two by Texas
all went out to right field. So Texas tied for
first on top of the SEC standings. Of course, long
rn Softball number one in the country and on top
of the SEC softball standings. Texas up to number two

(07:56):
now in the D one baseball dot Com rankings, and
Arkansas is the new number one team after Tennessee. Inexplicably,
after no hitting and run ruling, Texas A and M
on Thursday winds up losing, or on Friday winds up
losing both ends of a doubleheader to lose the series

(08:17):
and actually got run ruled in one of those. So
the Aggies showing some life after going starting off one
to nine in Southeastern Conference play, the Aggies come back
with back to back wins over previously number one ranked Tennessee.
So SEC played very very interesting. Been a busy time,
interesting time as well. Cameron Parker is the producer. That's

(08:37):
Cameron D. Parker the he standing for coming from his
favorite pro football team that has been kind of quite
of late, those Dallas Cowboys. There's been a lot of
trade speculation and things of that nature, but nothing new
to report there, which I know is nothing new to you,
Cameron Winning comes to your favorite pro football team.

Speaker 7 (08:58):
I haven't even followed a lick of an NFL news
in the past weeks three months. Maybe I'm so far
out in the Dallas Cowboys right now. But hey, you
know what, it's a Monday, and it's a Master's Monday. Correct,
That's what we should be talking about here.

Speaker 2 (09:12):
That's true. That's true.

Speaker 9 (09:14):
Maybe you should pull up the when we come out
of the Break or something of the AUGUSTA National Music
the Master's Theme or.

Speaker 2 (09:20):
Something like that.

Speaker 9 (09:23):
Today, because it is a Master's Monday and the week
leading up to an inclusive of the first of the
four major championships on the Pro Golf Tour this year,
so there is that. There's also a college basketball national
championship game to be decided before we get that first
of all, of course, the women's national Championship was decided yesterday.

(09:47):
Anybody that has followed the game really really closely this
season and especially over the last month probably would not
have been shocked even by the margin of victory that
Yukon had in pounding South Carolina yesterday. Remember a month
ago they went in there, and about six weeks ago

(10:09):
it was the same day that Texas PATTLSU women here
that Yukon went into Columbia and blew out the game Cocks.
They did it again in the National Championship, and this
was the course after South Carolina pretty much dominated Texas
to win on Friday night. They won by seventeen points,
seventy four to fifty seven. The log worn season ended
at thirty four and thirty five and four and their

(10:32):
highest win total since their first year in NCAA played
nineteen eighty one eighty two in the old AIAW, which
was the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women that before
the NCAA recognized women's athletics. In the early eighties, they
had aia W for women and Texas played in a

(10:54):
couple of AAAW championship matchups, didn't win when played in
a couple.

Speaker 2 (10:59):
They won thirty five ball.

Speaker 9 (11:00):
Games in the seventy eight to seventy nine season, but
they had not won thirty five ball games or they
won thirty seven that year. They had not won as
many as thirty five since their first year eighty one
eighty two when they got to the finals and lost
to Rutgers in the NCAA Championship, and they won thirty five,
had another step forward for the program. They had been

(11:21):
to the Elite Eight three of the four prior seasons
under Vick Schaeffer, four out of five to the Elite eight,
to now a trip to the final four. So disappointment, yes,
that they were unable to finish at South Carolina played
outstanding on Friday night in Tampa, Florida, but an excellent
experience for the Texas women who will be coming back

(11:41):
to the program next year. Most of the team will
be returning and they've got some young, exciting players coming in.
We'll see also have Vic Schaeffer navigates through the portal
to get a couple of things as well, a couple
of added pieces for his roster. We'll talk about added
pieces for the men's roster coming up, and yes, a
preview of the National Championship of the men's side the

(12:03):
women's side, All Yukon blowing out South Carolina they did
so again, winning.

Speaker 2 (12:09):
By a final count of eighty two to fifty nine.

Speaker 9 (12:11):
So they won handily in that contest, and Yukon wins
another national championship for Gino Arim, a first one in
nine years for the Huskies, but they win one there,
all right, Coming up, we'll talk to more basketball, a
lot of baseball to discuss for Texas where they are
right now, and tonight's college basketball national championship we have

(12:33):
inconceivable later on this hour, so we've got a lot
to get to here on a Monday. Glad to have
you with us, Glad to be back home here on
thirteen under the Zone.

Speaker 12 (12:46):
It's the Craig Way Show with the voice of the
Texas Longhorns and Hall of Fame broadcaster Craig Way.

Speaker 9 (13:05):

Standard messaging and data rates may apply.

Speaker 9 (14:40):
Today on the text on already, So he said call
me crazy if you be a gas Burno's followed through
on his swing. Looks like Mark McGuire, Wow, there's going
back some old school Kim. You had a chance to
call it Will Gasparino home run, right if you did,
you know, he didn't homer. He get a two run double.

Speaker 2 (15:00):
That's it.

Speaker 7 (15:00):
It was the double that he had on Saturday. But
I have not called the Gasprino home run yet. I've
called a lot of base hits from him.

Speaker 2 (15:06):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (15:06):
Usually I hope he performs pretty well when I am
on the mic. And I'm proud to say Craig because
I was a little bit worried that I was. I'm
not going to say a jinxer, you're worried about being
the boy Sumpter Jinks. But you know, the Texas record
when I'm on the broadcast call for baseball has not
been well. Really, it's not been well. I believe I leave.

(15:28):
Let's see. I think now I'm two and one. Okay,
you had to win over Saint John's. No, they lost
that game. They lost that game, beat San Diego, but
lost to Saint John's on Tuesday Night. That was part
of that stretch last season when Texas was having trouble
on Tuesday nights, and you know a lot of that.

Speaker 2 (15:44):
Was the pitching. Of course you're not having your number
one starter out there, but.

Speaker 7 (15:48):
Wasn't wasn't great, And coach David Pierce, very nice guy,
was kind of looking at me like, I don't know
if I.

Speaker 2 (15:53):
Want to for that dug out here? Okay? All right?
Uh okay?

Speaker 9 (15:59):
So yeah, two and so you wouldn't okay, so you
called it winnever San Diego.

Speaker 7 (16:03):
It might have been a flip flop. I think it
was a loss of San Diego on a Saturday. Then
maybe it was a one over Saint John's.

Speaker 2 (16:08):
I know it was. No, it was a winner for
San Diegause.

Speaker 9 (16:10):
I was driving back from Houston calling the basketball game
and I was listening to you call that game. I
think you were working with Hardball Harje on that one.
W Harje and thornhill Worth the last season and then
Harge again on Saturday. Okay, all right, so it worked
out well. Neither of you guys, we were a jeans.
Neither of you were big poison. David Salzman thanks to

(16:30):
David filling in. Sometimes you'll catch David on some of
the SEC Network Plus telecast of Long Horn games. David
is a Texas graduate as well, was our statistician, as
he likes to joke.

Speaker 2 (16:43):
For sixty sixty three.

Speaker 9 (16:45):
He was our statistician for Bill Schoening and myself in
that nineteen ninety seven Long warn football season, John mckamick's
final season when they lost to UCLA sixty sixty three, and.

Speaker 2 (16:58):
He was our statistician that season.

Speaker 9 (17:00):
But David fine broadcaster, and I appreciate him, and I
appreciate you guys stepping in as I was wrapping up
the women's basketball season there and then, and then of
course I'm back yesterday, and you know what goes through
my mind. I'm not a superstitious guy, but I'm thinking, Okay,
so they've won two games already against Georgia. They've won
two games, they won the series. So what happens with

(17:25):
the number one dude back in the chair here on Sunday. Well,
Ryland Gallant took care of that, and Will and Dylan
Valantis took care of that.

Speaker 2 (17:33):
The log Ruds took care of that. They won. So
that's why I said the announcer Jings' see, but.

Speaker 7 (17:37):
You've called me, You've called College World Series championship victories
for Texas.

Speaker 2 (17:42):
There's no jinks for you there. That's for you there, Okay,
all right.

Speaker 7 (17:45):
I think you're clear. I think you beat. The Hards
accused me of being in a jinx on air during
the game, really so that hurt my feelings a little bit.

Speaker 9 (17:53):
Feeling well, both you guys were good, fine, it was
It was good having hardball hearts with us on throughout
the course of the week. The Redhead rejoins me tomorrow
night wells on back of Keith Moreland to be back
with the Keith, uh will be back with me tomorrow
and Keith and I will be in lex in Kentucky
this weekend for the matchup with the Kentucky Wildcats. As
Texas will play the three game weekend series with the Wildcats.

(18:17):
As far as the Texas saying call me crazy, Gasprino
has followed.

Speaker 2 (18:20):
Through on his swing.

Speaker 9 (18:22):
Looks like Mark McGuire, let me say this, uh, Will
Gasprino has done a lot of work on his swing,
and he's got a lot of work and a lot
of help from Troy Tulowitzki as well, and and Tulo's
worked with him pretty extensively. Nolan Kane as well, Long
Runs associate head coach David and Uh. And obviously Jim Slosnagel,

(18:44):
the whole coaching staff has been very hands on with
this groove and worked with him diligently, both in the
hitting and the pitching. What Max Wiener's done with the
pitching staff has been most impressive.

Speaker 2 (18:55):
And this so this.

Speaker 9 (18:57):
Team plays with real loose, confident air about them. They
don't worry about the fact that they get down the game.
Cameron called them down for nothing going into the middle
innings and rallied back to win that. They've had some
other games where they had to rally back and win

(19:17):
this season. Uh, And and they've done that. So yeah, Uh,
they've done that.

Speaker 2 (19:23):
And they they also.

Speaker 9 (19:27):
Up to number two in the poll behind Arkansas and
LSU was number three in the rankings. In fact, I
think that pull this up, Cam. I was looking at
this this morning. Uh, and this is this is what
folks talk about when they talk about the SEC and
you know, whatever you say, it just means more whatever
you want to say on that that kind of thing.

(19:48):
But my point was about the SEC was if you
look at the rankings, Uh, it's it's pretty prolific.

Speaker 10 (19:59):
Uh.

Speaker 9 (20:00):
What is what's out there right now with the Southeastern Conference.
And I'm just pulling this up even as we speak
right now, because I want to make sure I don't
want to add it wrong or say it wrong. I
want to make sure that I've got it right.

Speaker 2 (20:18):
And I'll tell you what. Let me just yeah here
it is okay.

Speaker 9 (20:24):
So the top twenty five rankings, Arkansas is number one,
as we mentioned, Texas is number two, LSU was third,
Clemson is four, Tennessee is fifth, Ole Miss six, Georgia seven,
Oregon State eight, Florida State nine, UCLA ten. If you're

(20:44):
counting the top three teams in the poll are all
seas three sec for the top five, five of the
top six, six of the top seven, and then the
second ten begins with Auburn at number eleven. Alabama is twelve,
So that would be eight of the top twelve that

(21:10):
I get to write Arkansas, Texas, LSU, Tennessee, Ole, Miss, Georgia, Auburn, Alabama.

Speaker 2 (21:18):
That's eight of the top twelve.

Speaker 9 (21:20):
Then Ucrveryne is thirteen, Louisville fourteen, Oregon fifteen, North Carolina sixteen,
Vanderbilt is seventeen. That's nine of the top seventeen, and Georgia,
Texas eighteen Oklahoma's nineteen. That's ten of the top nineteen teams.
Ten SEC schools in the top nineteen. There By the way,

(21:42):
outside of the SEC, there's a pretty big series this week. Kansas,
who is on top of the Big twelve standings with TCU,
plays TCU this week. Kansas got into the poll this
week at number twenty two. TCU not in the poll yet.
Kansas State had dropped out out after being swept by
Oklahoma State. So that's another series to keep an eye on,

(22:07):
is that TCU Kansas series because Kansas is having its
best season in many many years on the diamond on
that okay, I mentioned Texas being ranked where they are
right now. Now to college basketball National Championship game is tonight.

(22:28):
It is Florida against Houston. Some folks thought it was
definitely going to be Duke. I think most people thought
it was definitely going to be Duke when they were
up fourteen with about what seven minutes to go in
the game.

Speaker 2 (22:40):
And then.

Speaker 9 (22:43):
There's been a lot of analysis on what happened to
them over the final really five minutes of the basketball game.
Some said they weren't aggressive enough driving to the hoop
on some of that some said you used to give
Houston credit playing a lot better defense. Duke failed to
make shots. There were some calls that went again Duke
as well. I think all of that is true. I'll

(23:05):
tell you what also boils down to it for me.
Duke had a six point lead with a minute to go.
It was sixty seven sixty one. They kind of pulled
the trigger pretty quickly on a three pointer, missed it.
Houston came down, got the rebound. I think it was

(23:25):
Emmanuel Sharp hits a three, and now it's cut to three.
It's sixty seven sixty four, with about forty seconds to go,
maybe forty three seconds. They end down the ball. Duke
in bounds the ball quickly and they're bringing it up
the floor, and I forgot who was bringing it up
the floor, but Cooper flag was wide open, and instead

(23:50):
he passed the ball to Proctor.

Speaker 2 (23:52):
Proctor is the weakest free throw shooter on the team.

Speaker 9 (23:54):
He gets fouled sixty eight percent, but still by far
the others were in the high eighties to low ninety.
He's even on the free front percentages including flak. So
Proctor goes to the free throw line, misses the front
end of the one in one and then that sets
in motion what happens for Houston to come down to
tie it, and then du missing another shot.

Speaker 2 (24:13):
And then Houston getting the game winner and all that.

Speaker 9 (24:16):
So there's little things mixed in with some of those
big things.

Speaker 2 (24:21):
I thought both teams were well coached.

Speaker 9 (24:23):
Galvin Sampson did a heck of a job with his
guys down the stretch to help get him to that point.
Now they play Florida tonight and what could be one
of the most bruising physical college basketball games, certainly ever
inter national championship game, I think on both sides, because

(24:44):
neither side is gonna you know, they will expect no quarter,
they will accept no quarter, They will go ahead and
just bludgeon the other team. So what that stands to
reason then, is which team can stay out of foul difficulty,
because you know, if some of Houston's bigs wind up

(25:05):
getting in the foul difficulty, same story with Florida as well,
it could tip the scale one way or the other.
And both teams shoot the three, like shooting the three pointer,
and if they can knock down threes, it might throw
the other team off balance. But I think this will
be a good National championship game tonight.

Speaker 7 (25:22):
I'm super excited for it, Craig. I mean, these two
teams have been actually grinding through the tournament, and there's
been certain points where it looked like both teams are
possibly going to have their season come to an end.
I mean, the Houston Gonzaga game in the second round
came down right to the wire. Gonzaga had a chance
to win that game, and then of course Houston just
absolutely decimated Tennessee, and of course down by fourteen, then

(25:46):
down by four and then down by six, and you know,
if Duken just make some free throws are inbound the basketball,
we could be talking about Duke and Florida. On the
Florida side, I think they've trailed in every game except
for the first at some point, and maybe they were
down to nothing in that game, but they have really
played well in the second half. I mean, what Clayton

(26:06):
did against Texas Tech incredible. I mean, that's a highlight
reel that we're gonna be watching for years to come,
because if not for his scoring broads and the step
back threes, we're talking about maybe an Auburn Houston National
championship or a Texas Tech Houston championship. But these two teams,
it looks like at certain points they have been dead,

(26:27):
but they have come back from behind and just shows
you how tough they are, right. I Mean, we've known Craig,
me and you about how tough Houston is because obviously
Texas and their relationship with h Town coach Sampson. Obviously
he's well known for how tough his teams have played.
And they have brought that to the Big Twelve, and
they brought to the tournament and in Florida, we saw

(26:47):
Florida first hand in Gainesville. I mean from there it
felt like, okay, this is I felt like Auburn and
Florida were the two best teams in the country and
not surprised at both made to the final four.

Speaker 2 (26:57):
And it's going to be a hard, in physical game.

Speaker 7 (27:00):
It won't be I don't think it's going to be
like ninety five to ninety Craig, So it's it's gonna
be definitely a tight game. I mean, these two teams
have got to be exhausted. It's been some physical basketball.
I mean you could argue that. I mean, the final
four games could have been national championship itself because of
the two teams, the four teams playing it, and the
way the games were played. So it's going to be
fun and can't think of a better way in the

(27:21):
college basketball season.

Speaker 9 (27:22):
In the case of the Florida Auburn game, Auburn, remember
had an eight point halftime league yep, and then it's
been largely theorized that they didn't get as aggressive done that.
I think Florida defended them better as well, and jane
I Brown was not the factor in the second half
that he was in the first half and for that matter,
throughout a lot of the tournament as well.

Speaker 2 (27:39):
So Florida knocks them outs.

Speaker 9 (27:42):
You mentioned what Clayton did and then the win over
Texas text peak of Texas Tech.

Speaker 2 (27:46):
I don't know if if folks saw this.

Speaker 9 (27:48):
Darien Williams has entered the Transfer portal the Red Raider
stand out and also Baylor guard the freshman Robert Wright
all Big Twelve Honorable mention and was a member of
the All Freshman team also is entering the portal. The
average eleven a half points and forrests per game as well.
We'll talk more about those sorts of things and some

(28:10):
college basketball, but up next we do have inconceivable for
a Monday afternoon.

Speaker 2 (28:14):
That's next. Here. I'm thirteen under the zone.

Speaker 9 (28:15):
Craig Way, alongside the producer Cameron Parker, and we're with
you up until five o'clock each and every after and
out tomorrow. We should point out we'll actually get a
little bit later start on the program because we do
have a Round Rock Express game to bring you. Ryland
Kobra actually will be bringing the game to you, you know.

Speaker 2 (28:38):
Be out at Dell Diamond. And it's the it's the
annual is it the drug awareness and education.

Speaker 9 (28:50):
Game that they that they that they have like during
the school day's Education Day, that's what that's what it is.

Speaker 2 (28:58):
It's it's called Education Day.

Speaker 9 (29:02):
And that'll be the game tomorrow afternoon at DL Diamond
playing by the way, and I just noticed this the
other day. They're playing the Dodgers Triple A team, which
is Oklahoma City. Now, when you filled in for Ryland
last year, they were weren't they called what Oklahoma City

(29:24):
Baseball Club or something because they had been Oklahoma City
Dodgers and then even though they are still the Dodgers
Triple A affiliate, they are not owned by the Dodgers
and if I remember hearing about this correctly, then kind

(29:47):
of came the directive that they needed to change their
name because they weren't owned by the Dodgers.

Speaker 7 (29:56):
If I'm if I'm remembering this correctly. At the I
think so new ownership group came in that wasn't the Dodgers,
and so they had to rename, and that they took
a year off kind of just waiting, kind of like
the Utah Hockey Club was waiting for a year before that.

Speaker 2 (30:11):
They still are.

Speaker 7 (30:11):
They chose their name, but okay see, waited a year
and then they ended up picking their team name.

Speaker 9 (30:17):
How about that? So they were the Oklahoma City Dodger. Now,
for those of us who remember when they were Arrangers
Triple A team, they were the Oklahoma City RedHawks for
years agoing back for years when Keith Morland was playing
for the when they were the Phillies Triple A they
were the Oklahoma City eighty nine Ers, named for the

(30:40):
year that not that Oklahoma became a state. They didn't
become a state until nineteen oh seven. It was still
called Indian Territory and all that, but they opened it
to settlement at eighteen eighty nine with the land rush,
hence the name Sooners, you know, the ones who jumped
the deadline or the start time. That's why some Longhorn

(31:06):
fans have taken a calling them the land thieves, you know.
But anyway, they were called the eighty nine Ers for years,
and then they became the Oklahoma City red Hawks for
a long time, and then they were the Oklahoma red Hawks,

(31:27):
and then after that, then when the Dodgers had ownership
in them, and they were the Oklahoma City Dodgers. And
then they got a new ownership group that was not
part of the Dodgers ownership group. So they were instructed
that they were going to have to change their name,
and so they did so. Now they're the Oklahoma City Comets.

Speaker 2 (31:47):
Comets.

Speaker 9 (31:49):
I was telling my youngest son about that yesterday and
he goes, isn't that the name of a WNBA team?
A said, it used to be used to be the
Houston Comments for a while. My dad grew up in
a town where Cameron Parker played golf. Before Ashboro, North Carolina.
My dad was from Ashborough. He was an Ashborough Blue Comet.
That was their name. There's no comment, by the way,

(32:13):
in Texas high school football mascot lore No comments on that.

Speaker 2 (32:18):
A little bit surprising.

Speaker 9 (32:20):
I always thought if I ever owned a minor league
baseball team down along the coast of North Carolina, you know,
maybe near Shiloh, where a lot of fans would come
down from Wilmington or up from North Turntle Beach or whatever,
I would call them the Coastal Commets. Just call them
the Coastal Commets, because that's that's down along the South Brunswick.

Speaker 7 (32:42):
Is that one of your dreams. I haven't heard this before.
You wanted to own a minor league baseball club.

Speaker 2 (32:46):
All Over the years I've thought of how like, you
know what you do?

Speaker 6 (32:48):
Know?

Speaker 2 (32:48):
Want to really? You know?

Speaker 9 (32:49):
When it really hit home for me when my hometown
built a brand new downtown ballpark, beautiful downtown ballpark, Greensboro,
North Carolina, because they used to play an old Memorial stadium.
If I have ever seen bulldoorum, you've seen that ballpark.
It's in there and there's football games that are played
in there. My high school played a football game in
there one time, at Old War Memorial Stadium. It was

(33:10):
built as a tribute and honoring World War One veterans.
That stadium opened in nineteen twenty six. It's still around
and they still have like some amateur baseball games. North
Carolina A and T play some games there. There's some
college games played there, but no more minor league games there.
But they had minor league baseball in there for ever
and ever, and I never had a team called the

(33:31):
Greensboro Bats. Then they had a team, they had a
Hornets team, They had all these different team names. But
then they built a new ballpark downtown, beautiful new ballpark,
and the first time I went in, I thought, what
used to be here when I was a kid, and
it was driving me crazy. And then remember it used
to be an old downtown Sears and Roebucks store where
you're going. Its first time I ever wrote an escalator

(33:52):
back then when I was a little kid in the
late sixties or whatever. But there's a beautiful downtown ballpark there,
home of the Greensburg Grasshoppers of the Carolina League. And
when they did the minor league contraction a few years ago,
Greensboro was a low A ball club.

Speaker 2 (34:08):
They got elevated.

Speaker 9 (34:09):
It's a high A ball there and are thriving as
a single A affiliate, I believe of the Pirates, and
it's a great Ballpark, and when I went there a
couple of times, I thought it'd be fun to own
the minor league team, you know, if you had the
funds and the means and all that other kind of stuff.
And if I had one, I would want to have
one down along where I go on vacation down along

(34:31):
the coast there in Brunswick County, and just call them
the Coastal Commets or whatever. In any event, the Comets
name is now being used by Oklahoma City, the Oklahoma
City Commets. They're playing the Round Rock Express tomorrow and
that contest will be I believe at noon.

Speaker 2 (34:54):
Eleven fifty year time, twelve or five. First pitch right
here on cave at AM, all right.

Speaker 9 (34:58):
On AM thirteen hundred zone here it is all right,
So it'll be tomorrow as they'll be taking on, like
I said, Round Rock against Oklahoma City. That's at noon
eleven fifty airtime. And then our show will follow that.
I will be out at UFCU dish fark Field because
also tomorrow night on the zone we bring in log

(35:22):
Worn Baseball, as the Logrorns are back in action. They'll
take on the Huskies of Houston Christian, who in Texas
has played some Houston Christian teams that were really really
not good when Lance Berkman was coaching them, and some
of the other that they just weren't good. This team's
pretty decent. They're twenty and ten going into the ballgame.

(35:42):
So Texas will take on the Houston Christian Huskies. They
have a team batting average of to eighty six, respectable enough.
Ere is a little elevated at four point nine to zero,
but a lot of teams have that these days. Georgia
team era IS was pushing five when the Long Worns

(36:04):
played them over the weekend. So now Texas will play
Houston Christian tomorrow evening and you can hear that here
on the Zone six fifteen pregame. Star time in the
first pitch is at six thirty. So that's what's going
on tomorrow night. But round Rock Express tomorrow afternoon. I

(36:25):
think Mike Hardball Hart will be out there at Del Diamond.
He loves going out to the ballpark. Baseball was a
big part of his life. He is hardball. He is hardball.

Speaker 2 (36:35):
He is that.

Speaker 9 (36:37):
Somebody said, UT Dallas is the comments Okay, University of
Texas Dallas that's in richardson the campus is up in Richardson.
If I remember correctly, there were D three school t
Dallas the comments there. The interesting thing about that is
after I talked about him this week of the week

(37:00):
before the passing of my longtime broadcast professor and Bill Mercer,
who a lot of folks knew from world Class Championship
wrestling with the van Erics and all that stuff, But
he was also the Dallas Cowboys played by play broadcaster
in the late sixties and early seventies. He called the
Ice Bowl game for the Cowboys against the Packers in
the sixties seven NFL Championship. He called the Cowboys for

(37:21):
Super Bowl the lost to Baltimore in the first Super
Bowl win in Super Bowl six. He was a Texas
Rangers first broadcaster to worked with Don Drysdale and then
with Dick Reiseneuber. He called Chicago White Sox games for
a few years with Harry Carey in the mid seventies,
and a lot of folks remembering from his news background

(37:41):
at kriled in Dallas and reporting on the Kennedy assassination
that faithful weekend in nineteen sixty three, well, Bill, after
he retired from North Texas, he was living in Richardson
and UT Dallas brought him out of retirement, had him
teach some sports broadcasting there and had him do some

(38:03):
games for them, some basketball and baseball games for them
online broadcast, and that is where he first began training.
His granddaughter, Emma Tieman, who is now the play by
play broadcaster of the Portland Sea Dogs the Red Sox
Double A. And she was just named Maine Sportscaster of

(38:24):
the Year, so she'll be at that Sportscaster of the
Year banquet that I was at last year being honored
and this year Roger Wallace is the Texas Sportscaster of
the Year being honored there. So Emma Teeman did that,
but she started out learning at UT Dallas with Bill
Mercer teaching hear there, so that was really cool. All right,

(38:45):
Coming up, we'll jump back into some college baseball talk,
some Loghorns and the national college baseball scene and some
basketball as well when we can continue here on thirteen
under the Zone.

Speaker 12 (38:59):
Welcome back to the Craig Way Show and the Voice
of the Longhorns. Craig on social media at Horn Voice.

Speaker 2 (39:19):
Happy to be with you. On the Monday afternoon.

Speaker 9 (39:22):
It's turning out to be a nice day outside. It's
kind of chilly yesterday if you were at the ballpark yesterday,
and my hats off to those who were there because
it was in the mid to upper fifties and the
wind was just handled like.

Speaker 2 (39:37):
I saw a couple of things on social media, and.

Speaker 9 (39:40):
Hey, it was our old friend Charlie Strong who put
it best when he said social media will be the
downfall of society.

Speaker 2 (39:47):
But I saw some things I think on.

Speaker 9 (39:50):
X Twitter, we're folks for complaining saying there were a
lot of empty seats at Dishfall Field. I did not
see a lot of empty seats yesterday the ballpark, and
I was there in the ballpark looked around. There were
a few less occupied seats then on Saturday and Friday
because the weather wasn't quite as palatable, but it was
still good. And I know the announced paid attendance is

(40:12):
different than the actual fannies in the seats and ninety
was the paid attendance. That sort of thing, and a
lot of folks have used this as a platform, and
I understand it to complain about the ticketing issue with
season tickets being sold out and now having to go
through the secondary ticket markets. Most notably, I think seat

(40:33):
geek to try to get tickets for the game and
saying it cost too much and some other and I
saw a lot of this back and forth on social media,
and I saw a lot of fans say it was fine.
So anyway, it just depends on the perspective that you're
coming from on this. But anyway, as I started to say,

(40:54):
the SEC players of the week, the player of the
week is Cam l of Arkansas, who led the SEC
in nearly every major offensive category last week. He had
nine hits, including three doubles. He had thirteen RBIs, eighteen

(41:16):
total bases, an on base percentage of seven oh six,
and a slugging percentage of thirteen eighty five. Of course,
they had the weekend series sweep against Missouri a Ballwalker Stadium.
The Hogs sent their program record for runs in an
SEC series. They swept the Tigers by a combined score
fifty one to nine of the three game set. The

(41:38):
co pitchers of the week are Kate Anderson of LSU.
Had a five hits. It was a five hit it
was a complete game shutout Thursday night when they shut
out Oh yeah, five hit shutout limited Oklahoma to five
hits over nine innings, recorded two walks and a career
best fourteen strikeouts. He was the guy who pitched for

(41:59):
LSU the game they won against Texas, the Friday night
game at UFCU Dish falk Field. The other co pitcher
of the week was Liam Doyle of Tennessee. The volunteers
at combined no hitter for the second time this season.
That was in the series opener on Friday against Texas
A and M. He had eight strikeouts two walks over

(42:20):
six shutout innings on that the tenth no hitter in
program history and the first by an SEC team in
league play in three years since Vanderbilt no hit Kentucky.

Speaker 2 (42:31):
So Liam Doyle got that now.

Speaker 9 (42:33):
Of course, folks had pointed out what happened after that,
that they had to play a doubleheader on Saturday because
of the inclement weather coming in, and Texas A and
M not only won both games to beat Tennessee, who
was number one at the time to win that series,
but that the Aggies also run ruled the Volunteers in

(42:54):
one of those games as well. Texas A and M
ended up winning the series. They were one in nine
in SEC playing. They're now three to nine in the
conference and Tennessee drops to nine and three in conference play.
And then the freshman of the week Dylan Valantis of
the Longhorns. They appeared twice. He picked up a save
and win against third rank Georgia at the time Georgia,
I think he has dropped the number five now the

(43:16):
first sweep over a top three team in more than
six years. That was when they had that big sweep.
I think of LSU several years ago. In his two outings,
Valanis had nine strikeouts, omber five and a third scoreless
innings against the second most prolific offense as it's called

(43:38):
in college baseball. He had the final four outs and
just eight pitches on Friday to pick up his seventh
save and lock down the series opening win. And then
yesterday he retired twelve to fourteen batters he faced, with
eight of those outs being strikeouts.

Speaker 2 (43:55):
That was a career high for him.

Speaker 9 (43:56):
He gave up one hit in one walk and that
was hit and got the win obviously on the Ryland
Galvan home run.

Speaker 7 (44:05):
Pretty impressive stuff from Dylan to Land, no doubt, Craig
and not just Dylan, but the entire Texas rotation from
the starters to the bullpen. I mean they used six
total pitchers against going in the arguably the best statistical
offense in the Southeastern Conference. I even mean if you
told coach Tim slas And and Max Willa, hey, you're
only going to use three bullpen guys this weekend, they

(44:27):
would have been like, huh, did everything get rained out?
But no, they pitched so well and so dominant against
such a great and physical team, as Slash called them,
and they looked like the better team. Taxas played a
little bit more patient and they I mean they trailed
in two of the three games this weekend, and they
were in some real tough spots and there were some
points where it was the two or three or four

(44:48):
hole hitter for Georgia. I mean every I mean the
top half in the bottom that all over three hundred
would come to the play with runners in scoring position
and Texas would find a way to be able to
get them out, which was c and the spite being down,
I mean, Texas has played like such a physical and
more experienced team and Craig that did it without Max
belou and Adrian Rodriguez.

Speaker 2 (45:09):
I mean, how about Jaquay Stewart coming in.

Speaker 7 (45:11):
I mean, I don't think there's a lot of hitting depth,
and Slaws talked about how he wants to have a
lineup full of lefties. I mean, they only had two
lefties in the lineup for most of the series. But
one of those, Daquay Stewart, had a couple huge at
bats in this series. So Texas, despite the injuries and
the depth, hit very well I thought. And then the
pitching was certainly outstanding. I mean that pitching room has

(45:31):
to be on top of the world right now. After
the weekend they had against Georgia. You mentioned Jaquay Stewart.

Speaker 9 (45:36):
He got his first home run as a long run
on Saturday in the game you called there.

Speaker 2 (45:39):
That got Texas on the board. They were there for
another huge time.

Speaker 9 (45:42):
And he really drove the ball well, all right, So
after all the smoke had cleared of the weekend, Arkansas
swept Missouri finished off with a doubleheader sweep of the weekend.
LSU swept Oklahoma in Norman, Tennessee ends up dropping two
out of three to Texas, A and M. Georgia of
course swept by Texas. Ole miss took two out of

(46:03):
three from Kentucky. Alabama dropped two out of three to Auburn.
Alabama is seven and five, so it's Arkansas and Texas
are both eleven and one on top of the conference
standings by one game on top of LSU. Then Tennessee
is nine and three, Georgia's eight and four, Ole miss

(46:24):
is eight and four, Alabama is seven and five, Vanderbilt
is seven and five, Auburn is six and six, Kentucky
is five and seven, Oklahomas five and seven.

Speaker 2 (46:33):
Mississippi State is three and nine.

Speaker 9 (46:35):
Texas A and M by virtue of winning those two
games over Tennessee is three and nine in the league.
South Carolina is two and ten and then Florida one
in eleven. I don't think anybody expected that, and Missouri
is zero to twelve in the conference. So that's where
it is right now. And in the most recent rankings,

(46:58):
D one Baseball has Arkansas number one the country and
Texas jumps to number two in the country and LSU
is number three in the country, so they have the
top three spots there in the in the national polls.

Speaker 2 (47:13):
This week, obviously, the.

Speaker 9 (47:17):
Longhorns have the non conference game tomorrow night, and they'll
be at home against Houston Christian again. That is a
six thirty first pitch, six fifteen pregame start time here
on thirteen under the zone Again tomorrow Round Rock Express
Baseball eleven fifty AM of the pregame and the first

(47:37):
pitch is at noon for the Express or twelve or
five as they play the Oklahoma City Comments and then
and then will bring you the show from uf U
Dish fifth following the completion of the Express game. And
then the Longhorns will play at six thirty Texas in
action against Houston Christian Around the League tomorrow, Just so

(48:03):
you'll know, Arkansas is at home against Arkansas State. Georgia
hosts Presbyterian. Hey, you grew up not far from Presbytery.
Do you know the mask I name? Let's see, I
had a friend play soccer. Are they are they the devils?
There's something to do with the devils, right, something satanic?

Speaker 2 (48:18):
I think? Right?

Speaker 7 (48:18):
No, they're not sure. I'm I know their colors there,
it's like that light blue and the red. Yeah, they're
in what South Carolina?

Speaker 2 (48:27):
Right? Yeah?

Speaker 9 (48:28):
Clinton, South Carolina, not the Google It Go ahead and
just tell me the blue hose. Ah see, I was close.

Speaker 2 (48:34):
Blue hose. That sounds like demonic mind What does blue
hose mean?

Speaker 12 (48:38):
What?

Speaker 7 (48:38):
H hose as in like nose not that ky I
know that. But hose isn't like the watering hose.

Speaker 9 (48:44):
No, no, no, no no, as in the socks you
wear like the white socks are sometimes referred to as
the pale hose.

Speaker 6 (48:53):
Uh.

Speaker 9 (48:53):
That's what that hosiery as in stockings. That's what it
That's what it denotes.

Speaker 2 (48:58):
Was there really any Scottish people in Clinton, South Carolina?

Speaker 9 (49:01):
That's where it started, that's it. Yeah, because of the
Scottish settlement down there. Presbyterians the blue hose, Yes, yes,
it was a big Scotch Irish villay in North Carolina
and South Carolina and the colonial times back then. So yes,
the blue hose a Presbyterian off of that. Okay, Auburn

(49:24):
has a good test. They're playing at Georgia Tech. Uh
and so that'll that'll be uh, that'll be good to see.
How of course Auburn will be here.

Speaker 2 (49:34):
Uh.

Speaker 9 (49:35):
Later this month, Tennessee is hosting Alabama State. South Carolina's
hosting usc Upstate. I mentioned Arkansas hosting Arkansas State. Florida
Florida State second meeting this year. Florida State already beat him.
On a walk off Grand Slam a couple of weeks ago,
and they're playing and that was in Tallahassee. This one
will be in Gainesville. Missouri plays SAU Edwardsville. That sounds

(49:58):
like that's going to be a minor league ballpark the
Saint Lewis area, if I'm guessing.

Speaker 2 (50:02):
Texas.

Speaker 9 (50:03):
A and M plays at sam Houston, LSU plays at
Nickels State. Vanderbilt host Dayton, Mississippi State is at UAB.
We got a chance to see their ballpark. We're at Birmingham. Yeah,
Alabama will host Southern miss who's number twenty three. That
could be a good matchup. Ole Miss is at Memphis.

(50:23):
Oklahoma host Dallas Baptist, who is always a good mid
major program. Kentucky and Louisville. Louisville number fourteen in the country,
so Kentucky will play them before the Loggorns come to town
to Lexington this week. Missouri will start and then and
then they'll And that was Tuesday and Wednesday. There's only
one game Wednesday, ole Miss hosting Alcorn State Okay Conference

(50:47):
played Rezumes on Thursday with two matchups. Missouri's at Florida
in a battle of two teams that the bottom feeders
really Florida's won and eleven league, Missouri's oh and twelve
three game weekend series in Florida. South Carolina is in
College Station to play Texas A and M. That's the
next two up in the pecking order after that, and

(51:08):
those are the Thursday matchups.

Speaker 2 (51:10):
This week the Friday series.

Speaker 9 (51:12):
Keep an eye on these, not only with Texas at Kentucky,
but Arkansas at Georgia. It is important to take note
of LSU is playing Auburn, two nationally ranked teams, and
that will be on the planes this weekend. Alabama will
host Mississippi State, Ole miss will host Tennessee that will
be a big one as well, and Oklahoma will host

(51:33):
Vanderbilt trying to get off the deck after being swept
at home by LSU. So another big weekend of action
in the SEC for the Longhorns and for the rest
of the Southeastern Conference coming up. We'll go back to
some college basketball because I want to talk more about

(51:53):
the national championship matchup tonight between Florida's Speaking of the SEC,
Florida against Houston. I've got some opinions and projections on
those games that we'll get to Later on, we'll talk
about some NBA things. Hey, Luca week, Luka Doncris is
coming back to the Metroplex. On Wednesday night, the Mavericks

(52:14):
host the Lakers. How exciting that would you? Would you
go to that game? If you were offer tickets that game?

Speaker 2 (52:19):
I would definitely go.

Speaker 9 (52:20):
Yeah, because I weren't a real big fan of the Lakers.

Speaker 7 (52:24):
No, but just to be in there because I think
Lucas going to get such a great reception. But I mean,
I can't imagine what it would be like for for
a Mavericks fan because as a Thunder fan, when Katie
left to go to the Warriors and he came back,
it was a lot of Fitzrell was in chesapeak whole treat.

Speaker 2 (52:39):
I was back at one of those games with all
the cupcakes. Yeah, I mean I was.

Speaker 7 (52:42):
I was watching that game against the Warriors and rooting
for every kt mess. But for this game, I feel
like Mavericks fans are going to be rooting for Luca
to drop like fifty on them because they want Nico
Harrison and the ownership staff to watch Nico go Lucas,
watch Luca go nuclear against his old team, which I
think he might I mean at thirty points against OKC

(53:02):
this weekend, and you know Luca, he's a competitive, you know,
competitive players, so I feel like Luca is going to
have a huge game.

Speaker 9 (53:10):
Hey, you're a Thunder fan like my younger, so I'm
gonna ask you the same question I asked him.

Speaker 2 (53:14):
What the world happened against the Lakers.

Speaker 10 (53:19):
Nine?

Speaker 7 (53:19):
Two back to back losses, back to back games where
they were out of it in the first half. I
don't know if I want to make too much out
of it. The team just looks kind of exhausted, looks ghast.
I mean, they have locked up the one seat in
the Western Conference, a two game lead over Cleveland for
the number one spot, which would guarantee home court advantage
in the NBA Finals that they got there. Jadab was
talking about how the team just needs to kind of,

(53:41):
you know, find the energy. So I'm not going to
get too worked up over it, but I am a
little concerned. I'll just say that. But you know, hey, Lakers, rockets.
You know they're fighting for seeding in the playoffs right
because right now, the Lakers could be as high as
the two seed, Craig, they could drop to the eight seed.
They could drop to playing right now. But that tells
you how congested the Western conferences. Okay, see, they're fourteen

(54:04):
and a half games up over the Rockets, So I
am a little bit concerned, but I'm not going to
make a big deal out of it too much.

Speaker 2 (54:10):
But you know, we'll see.

Speaker 7 (54:12):
Even despite how good okay see, he's been this year,
I just don't know if they're that dominant team. I
think the Celtics are the best EVEM in basketball right now.
I think Boston is going back to the finals, and
if I was a betting man, I would pick them
to win it this season. But still sometime left to go,
so we'll see.

Speaker 9 (54:28):
And the Mavericks need that game. Yeah, but if you're
a Mavericks fan, do you want your team to be
in the play Well, it's interesting you bring that up.
My wife is we went to Game four the NBA
Finals last year, and both of us could be listed
as Mavericks.

Speaker 2 (54:46):
Fans and we're rooting for them and all that kind
of stuff.

Speaker 9 (54:48):
I asked her the other night, I said, you know,
the promo came on for Luca and the Lakers playing
in Dallas. I turned to her and I said, are
you going to be rooting for the Lakers on Wednesday,
and she said.

Speaker 2 (55:00):
Yes, I am. See.

Speaker 9 (55:03):
They took Luca away from my team. So I said,
you're picking the player of the team. Yes, yes, he's
rooting for the Lakers.

Speaker 7 (55:12):
I think there's a lot of Mavericks fans. Yeah, I
feel the same way. They're Luca fans now, yeah, yeah,
Luca fans. I understand it. I understand it. All right.

Speaker 9 (55:21):
We'll have more coming up when we continue on thirteen
under the Zone.

Speaker 12 (55:26):
We're back. It's The Craig Way Show with Hall of
Vame broadcaster and voice of the Texas Longheards Craig Way.

Speaker 9 (55:44):
No surprise obviously after winning the national championship. University of
Connecticut the Yukon women number one in the final AP
poll after winning the school's twelfth national championship, and they
got all thirty one votes they should from the national

(56:08):
media panel and beat South Carolina eighty two to fifty nine.
It was bowling them out of the gang. Cook started
number one, they were the unanimous second choice. A record
five teams held the number one spot in the AP
poll this year. South Carolina, u CLA, Notre Dame in
Texas also all were first at some point this season,

(56:31):
UCLA finished third in the poll.

Speaker 2 (56:33):
The Longhorns finished fourth.

Speaker 9 (56:35):
So that's that's where they finished there somebody, And I'm
hoping and I have to believe, I say, I have to,
don't have to. But one would think, but this way,
one would think that whoever posted this on on our

(57:02):
text line on the text page was uh, I would
say tongue in cheek or kidding about it. Let me
let me put it that way, either tongue in cheek
or kidding.

Speaker 2 (57:16):
And and I'm pulling up the uh. Well, I was
pulling up the text line here, so the one about
the Rangers broadcast.

Speaker 9 (57:26):
No, but I'm glad you brought that up because that
makes sense as well.

Speaker 2 (57:32):
Read that. Read that while I.

Speaker 7 (57:34):
Pull up so precursor. You know Texas Rangers now play
on the Victory Sports Network, the same streaming service that
airs the Dallas Stars. It's completely different on streaming. It's
no longer Valley. So the message on the on the
text line, which is by the way eight five three
zero text to where Texas followed by your message was
I know y'all have been traveling, so not sure if

(57:54):
any of y'all have gotten the chance to check out
the new Ranger Sports Network Victory Plus, but it is
miles better than the Brow Valleys broadcast from last year.

Speaker 2 (58:03):
Plus.

Speaker 7 (58:03):
How about the pitching from the Rangers for the start
of the season. Okay, two separate things first, and let
me take the second part. First, Rangers pitching is much
better at the start of the year anyway.

Speaker 2 (58:12):
It's it's been huge, Craig.

Speaker 7 (58:13):
I mean four game win streaks seven and seven and
two atop the Al West, but have a negative run differential.
And it's because the pitching has pitched so well. I mean,
Kumar Rocker yesterday's six innings he gave up just one run,
was fantastic. Jack Lyder has been a revelation. I mean,
there was a lot of worries I think in the

(58:34):
organization that Rocker and Lighter were never gonna make it
to the big leagues, and so far Rockers first start
was tough, seconds start much better.

Speaker 2 (58:42):
Lighter has been phenomenal.

Speaker 7 (58:44):
To Gram who hasn't pitched in like two years, is
showing some signs of life. Tyler Molly, who had an
awful start, supposed to be kind of just he's kind
of filling in with all the injuries. With John Gray
out for a little bit. He was fantastic against Tampa Bay.
The bullpen has been incredible. It's just just the bats.
And I think if you could have okay, would you

(59:05):
rather have a good pitching to start but your bat's
slow or vice versa, I think you would rather have okay.
The bats haven't heated up yet. At least our pitching
has been good. And that's the case for the Rangers.
So we're hoping that, you know, Seeger and Simeon and
Garcia and those guys can you know, kind of wake
up because they have not been hitting to their potential.
But the pitching I think has been what all Rangers

(59:26):
fans were hoping for going into the season thus far.

Speaker 2 (59:28):
Yeah, I think so okay.

Speaker 9 (59:29):
Now about the new Ranger Sports Network, I don't want
to burst anybody's bubble or make them make them feel
kind of silly about some When you say it's miles
better than the Ballet's broadcast from last year, take it
from me because I know the people and the principal
as well. It's exactly the same people. Here's the difference.
Here's the difference. It's when they took it in a

(59:53):
house because of the bankruptcy by that was declared by
the Sinclair Group. Out there were the Diamond Sports Network Group.
What they did was to hire away all of the
key personnel when the Rangers stepped away from it to
go with a Victory group, they hired all of the

(01:00:14):
key personnel away who had produced their telecast over the
past several years. You mentioned Bali's last year was actually
Fan Duel Sports, but the year before that Ballets and
then before that Fox Sports Southwest.

Speaker 2 (01:00:26):
Same people.

Speaker 9 (01:00:27):
It's the exact same Patrick Macdrofsky as their executive producer.
Patrick mcdrowski, a good friend of mine is the was
our executive producer for all our high school Scoreboard live
shows and several of the high school football state championship
games as well. What they did and what was really
smart to the Texas point was and what's making it
miles better. They took the key personnel who were involved

(01:00:50):
in the production, and then there's the financial stability piece
doing it the way they're doing just like the I
don't know if you've seen the Mavericks telecast through the
tech the group, same type deal or it's looked really
really good. I have all of those sports packages subscriptions
like I have the NBA League Pass, the NHL Center

(01:01:13):
Ice Package, MLB Extra Innings.

Speaker 2 (01:01:16):
Else Am I going to watch the Dodgers regularly?

Speaker 9 (01:01:18):
Right?

Speaker 2 (01:01:18):
You know?

Speaker 9 (01:01:19):
So MLB Extra Innings, I have all three of those
network regional Sports Network packages, so I've had a chance
to watch it and to see the Rangers, and yes,
Miles better in some areas, but a lot of it
it's the exact same people. They just I think what
they did was they just kind of perhaps divested themselves

(01:01:42):
of some of the extraneous personnel who probably didn't contribute
as much to the telecast, but the key personnel, production
people who are doing it, it's the same people. And
that's good because there were some really good people who
were kind of really caught in the middle of that
of that whole deal when Diamond Sports Group declared bankruptcy

(01:02:05):
and as a result of that, Major League teams like
the Diamondbacks, the Guardians, the Guardians, the Padres, the Rockies,
the Mariners, and the Rangers, a lot of those were
kind of left to their own devices. Either finished out

(01:02:28):
the deal, and the Rangers were able to finish out
their deal with Diamond Sports Crews because they cut them
a check. They cut them a fifty million dollar check
to be able to get through the rest of the season,
and so they did. But they'd already made their mind up,
just as the Mavericks had, that they were going to
go a different direction. But teams like the Diamondbacks and
the Padres, they went completely.

Speaker 2 (01:02:51):
Outside of that.

Speaker 9 (01:02:51):
Contracted with MLB and MLB Network to produce their telecast.
So if you watch, if you have an MLB Extra
Innings package, or if you watch it in a sports
bar and you watch a Diamondbacks telecast or a Podres telecast,
it will look remarkably like the MLB Network telecasts, same graphics,

(01:03:13):
a lot of that same So now they're still using
their contracted announcers, don Orsilo who does the Padres games
with I believe it's with Mark Grant. So they do
their telecast Steve Berthume, remember him from ESPN Days. He
does the Diamondbacks those games, all of those games, Bob.

Speaker 2 (01:03:33):
Brindley working with him.

Speaker 9 (01:03:35):
They are their announced team, but it's produced by a
group that contracts in through MLB Network. That's not the
same with the Rangers. The Rangers kept a lot of
the same production elements in place. They just went financially
a different route, and so it looks good.

Speaker 7 (01:03:51):
Similar to like Longhoor Network and SEC Network Plus. It's
the same graphics package, but different people behind the scenes.
If you watch it, you know, it might look pretty
much the same, except for the Longhoor Network no logo
has been replaced by the SEC Network logo. Oh this, Craig,
if you subscribe to the Texas Rangers on Victory Plus
to their their season right now, because it was like

(01:04:13):
it was like an early season deal. But if you
pay the one forty you get two free tickets to
a game. That's a great marketing campaign. I didn't issue
that for every team, for every team, especially for a
baseball team, right because you have so many games or
so many empty seats. That's a really cool way to
get people who live out of the market to come
visit to your ballpark.

Speaker 2 (01:04:31):
I agree, Yeah, that's a that's that's a nice thing.
I might do that, you know. Now. Of course it
says subject to availability, So I wonder if that would
include Dodgers maybe, Craig, we we buy this package and
we go up and watch the Tani pitch, and you
better hurry. It's happening in two weeks. Two weeks.

Speaker 9 (01:04:45):
Yeah, I won't be able to We won't be able
to get up for that one. Because weekend series in Arkansas, right, No,
I think that's the Auburn series here that that weekend.
I think it's right around that time. So I don't
think I'll be able to make that.

Speaker 2 (01:04:58):
Uh.

Speaker 9 (01:04:59):
That does not, however, mean that I won't get to
see them in action at some point this season.

Speaker 2 (01:05:05):
But then I were talking about that is we need
to see them again.

Speaker 9 (01:05:09):
I've watched him at least once every season for the
past ever. Bill Schoening like had this record. I think
he had it broken during the pandemic or something. He
didn't see him during the pandemic the shortened season, but
he had seen the Phillies, his beloved team, every year
at least one time, going back to like nineteen sixty

(01:05:31):
five or something, every year seeing at least one Phillies game,
and then I think it got broken during the twenty
twenty season, the shortened season, the pandemic here, which is
ironic because I saw the Dodgers twice during that time
in the playoffs in Arlington when they were playing, you know,
in the bubble if you will, saw him against the

(01:05:53):
Braves and he had LCS and then of course Game
one of the World Series against Tampa Bay, so it
was it's interesting. All right, we'll be back to wrap
up hour number two coming up here on thirteen under
the Zone.

Speaker 1 (01:06:03):
We welcome you to UFCU Dish Fault Field on the
campus of the University of Texas. It's Texas Longhorns Baseball
as the Long Orange take on the Georgia Bulldog. And
here's the pitch to Zabrowski lined on a hop and
to his right. Flores out of his glove, retrieves it
throws the first in time standing ovation for Flores on

(01:06:23):
his knee, going to his right. The ball bounced out
of his glove for a moment, but he had enough
time to throw a dirt to Kimball Schustler and it's
a one two three top of the first two to.

Speaker 4 (01:06:33):
One pitch lind left field deep. It's a Texas round tripper,
a two run homer for Kingsey Barba and the Longhorns lead.

Speaker 3 (01:06:43):
Three to nothing.

Speaker 5 (01:06:45):
Here comes the O two.

Speaker 4 (01:06:46):
Lifted left field way out of hair at Texas round
tripper Farewell Gasparino, a two run shot to make it
five nothing.

Speaker 5 (01:06:57):
Texas runner at second, alf Thirst, runner at first Burnett,
next pitch, grand ball, left side dive into his.

Speaker 3 (01:07:03):
Right Forest on the third for the fourth out.

Speaker 6 (01:07:06):
Big got him come on ready to two pitch swing
and a miss, and that's the ballgame. Cavan has thrown
a no hitter of five nothing run rule victory for
the Longhorns, and Hegan Cavan fitnesses off the no no
after the Longhorns pick up three to get into run

(01:07:28):
rule territory in the top of the fifth, eleven strikeout
of the game for Cavan as well dispatching and Langler,
the Longhorns win it eight nothing.

Speaker 7 (01:07:40):
Now, the fifth ranked Longhorns can win their fourth consecutive
Southeastern Conference series today.

Speaker 2 (01:07:45):
For the victory over the.

Speaker 7 (01:07:47):
Third ring Georgia Bulldark starts as Stewart rips won.

Speaker 8 (01:07:51):
The right field Jackson going back this ball out of here,
two run homer for to Quay Stewart his first home
run of the season in Texas on the scoreboard for
the two two two count.

Speaker 7 (01:08:11):
He's been battling in this a bet so against Henry
Hunter with the one out, here's a two to two
bitch got up swinging strike three and Luke Harrison now
nine strikeouts to plant Day on third, Mendoza on second.

Speaker 2 (01:08:27):
Texas roll in Quarta two.

Speaker 7 (01:08:28):
The three to one pitch Flores in the center field
ob backing up at the warning track off.

Speaker 2 (01:08:33):
The lawn to plant deer will score Mendoza around third.

Speaker 7 (01:08:38):
At the time ball game, Jalen Flores a double. The
two two pitch the Gasparino hit torch left center.

Speaker 6 (01:08:46):
This Baul driven down into the gap in Texas gotta
have their first lead. Wilf Gasparino an RBI double coming
around home is galbod the.

Speaker 2 (01:08:55):
Go to the play not at time.

Speaker 6 (01:08:58):
Gasparino the third base takes the two run leads here
in the seventh Here the O two pitch the Robbie
Burnett got him swinging, and Texas completes the comeback and
takes the series against the third ranked Georgia Bulldogs. Final
score from the dish the Texas Longhorns seven, the Georgia

(01:09:21):
Bulldogs four. Now the ball dip the center that goes Lnger,
She's not gonna get to it over the fence. MIAs
goot a home run and Texas leads here at the
fourth inning.

Speaker 9 (01:09:33):
From UFCU dish, Font field. It is the finale of
the three game weekend series between the Texas Longhorns and
the Georgia bull Dogs.

Speaker 2 (01:09:41):
Georgia with the two to one lead on the scoreboard.
Here's the stretch.

Speaker 9 (01:09:44):
First pitch coming to floors, swings here in the list
of flyball to Wright center, chasing McCarthy into the alley,
back to the warning track. Dude can say good night
to it. Win dated, perhaps, but it's a home run
out po Taco of the light field wall and the
Longhorns are back in front. Three to two, three balls,

(01:10:06):
two strikes, two outs. Balantis the stretch. The three to
two pitch strike three called slight offer, goes.

Speaker 10 (01:10:17):
Down looking and Dylan Volantes closes out his fourth consecutive
ginning and is able to do.

Speaker 9 (01:10:26):
It with a strike out every time. Here's the three ball,
one strike pitch. Galvan swings. Let's a high fly ball,
this one out the deep right center.

Speaker 4 (01:10:35):
Back to the runing track.

Speaker 2 (01:10:36):
You kids say good night to it.

Speaker 11 (01:10:38):
A walk off home run to end it, HiT's a
sweep of the third right Georgia Bulldogs Ryland Galvon walks
it off over the right field wall and Texas sweeps
Georgia to win the series and with that's the Longhorns

(01:10:58):
are sitting on top along with Arkansas of the Southeastern
Conference standings. So here we are, iur number three in
the program here on thirteen under the Zone. Cameron Parker,
the producer, did an ounstanding gentleman putting that montage together,
which included Texas saftball year and also baseball over the weekend,
David Salzman was on the call for the Friday night

(01:11:20):
five to one Long Horn victory. Cam him self called
the Saturday come from behind from down four to nothing
to beating Georgia seven to four win, and then of
course I was on the call yesterday. All three of
us worked with Mike Cardball Harge over the weekend. Thanks
to Mike for his his work throughout the course of
the weekend. And then Texas Softball Andrew Haynes up in Columbia, Missouri.

(01:11:41):
Teagan Cavan a no hitter on.

Speaker 9 (01:11:46):
In the first game of the series and then came
back did Degan got the save in Game two for
Sidealelei Gudieras and then forty five minutes later through one
hundred and thirty pitches and got the win in eight
innings in game three, and both the saltball and baseball

(01:12:06):
teams needed extra innings one extra inning a piece to
win and sweep out the series. For softball, of course,
they normally play seven, so it was an eight inning
win over Missouri, winning three to one in the second
game after they won the first game yesterday for three,
and then for baseball having to go ten innings, but

(01:12:29):
the Ryland Galvon home run over the right field wall
in Texas getting the win four to three and ten innings,
and now the long Wards are twenty six and four
and they are eleven and one in SEC play, tied
with Arkansas on top of the SEC standings. In case
you're wondering if it's on your schedule for down the road,

(01:12:49):
Texas does play at Arkansas. You know, the long Worns
don't play every team in the SEC because none of
the teams in the SEC, all of the teams you
don't do. You play ten conference series, and you have
sixteen baseball playing institution, so you can't play fifteen conference series.

(01:13:12):
There's not enough games in the schedule to allow for
that practically and still play a representative non conference schedule.
So you play ten conference series and then you get
to the SEC Tournament. I've had people ask me about
the SEC Tournament what the format is after seeing, you know,

(01:13:33):
with the double elimination, the weird double bracketing thing, and
the way they did it in the Big Twelve. Here's
the irony. The SEC Tournament and the Big twelve Tournament
are the same format this year, but it's not the
format that Texas was in last year. Here's the format
in the SEC Tournament. All you have to do is

(01:13:53):
think of the SEC Basketball Tournament.

Speaker 2 (01:13:57):
That's all you have to think of. It'single elimination.

Speaker 9 (01:14:01):
However, if you finish in the top eight, you get
a buy the first day. If you finish in the
top four, you get a double buy. So the Longhorns
would not play until Thursday. If the regular season ended today,
they'd get a double buy and would not play until Thursday.

Speaker 2 (01:14:23):
But it's all single elimination.

Speaker 9 (01:14:25):
The first day there in late May on Tuesday, with
the tournament is the nine seed versus the sixteen seed,
and the ten seed versus the fifteen, the eleven versus
the fourteen, then twelve versus the thirteen, and then the
winners of those games go up against the five, six, seven,

(01:14:46):
and eight seeds who receive a one day by a
single buy the second game, and then the top four
seeds get into play on the thurday.

Speaker 2 (01:14:55):
But that's on down the road.

Speaker 9 (01:14:56):
That's not for another month, another six weeks to be
exact act. But as I started to say, for those
of you who have it and wondering on your calendar,
Texas does play Arkansas.

Speaker 2 (01:15:09):
They don't.

Speaker 9 (01:15:10):
They don't play every team in the SEC this season,
they don't play. Among the teams that they do not play,
they don't play Tennessee, They do not play Alabama. They
don't play South Carolina. That's one of the bottom feeders there,

(01:15:33):
but they don't. They don't play them, but they do
not play. Tell you the other ones that they don't play. Okay,
they don't play Tennessee. As I mentioned, they don't play
Ole Miss, they don't play Alabama, they don't play Vanderbilt,
and they don't play South Carolina. Those are the five

(01:15:55):
teams they do not play. Still to come on the
schedull for Texas the weekend series at Kentucky this weekend.
Then they will be playing Auburn. They will be playing
Texas A and M at home. They will go to Arkansas.

(01:16:16):
The first weekend in May, and it's a Thursday Friday
Saturday series. The teams will rotate on whether they play
Friday through Sunday or Thursday through Saturday to allow for
the national telecast be it a SEC networker on ESPNU
or ESPN or ESPN two. So they go to Arkansas

(01:16:38):
first weekend in May, and that will be a big
series coming up, obviously, but there's there's certainly games that
will take place prior to them that will also carry
a lot of weight. Like I said, this weekend, Texas
will play at Kentucky and then after they play at Kentucky,

(01:17:05):
they'll have a midwek game against ut Rio Grand Valley
the next week. Then they'll host Auburn and that will
be a Thursday, Friday Saturday weekend series. April seventeen, eighteen nineteen,
when Auburn comes to down In. Auburn is ranked number
eleven in the country and they're having a very good season.
Then the long Runs we have their only mid week

(01:17:26):
non conference game. They'll go back to San Marcus to
play Texas State, and of course they lost to the
Bobcats at home last Tuesday, but they'll play them at
bobcat Ballpark on April twenty second. Then Texas A and
M comes to town on a Friday Saturday Sunday weekend
series at UFCU just Fault Field.

Speaker 2 (01:17:45):
That will be that weekend.

Speaker 9 (01:17:47):
And I think that's also the fan appreciation weekend for
long run football as well as they conclude their spring practices. Then,
as I mentioned that first weekend in May, Texas will
have a Thursday Friday Saturday weekend.

Speaker 2 (01:18:01):
Let me make sure of this. I said that was
a Thursday Friday. I could be wrong about that.

Speaker 9 (01:18:06):
I'm looking at the SEC schedule here, but I thought
for sure, but I'm not seeing that now. I'm looking
at this Saturday Sunday. I stand corrected. That's a Friday
Saturday Sunday. The Arkansas one, the Auburn one is Thursday
through Saturday. And of course they conclude the regular season
like everybody does, with a Thursday through Saturday, and that

(01:18:28):
will be at Oklahoma in between time. Their final home
weekend series second weekend in May will be Florida at
home against Texas or Texas at home against Florida, and
that will be a Friday Saturday Sunday weekend series. So
there you are with it all right. Coming up next,

(01:18:49):
we've got some other topics we'll get to. We get
to the college basketball again. The national championship is tonight.
There's a couple other notes to get to as well
as we continue here on this Monday after on thirteen under.

Speaker 12 (01:19:00):
The zone, back to the Craig Way shot. Connect with
Craig through the text line by texting Texas to eight
one five three zero, followed by your message. Standard message
and data rates may apply.

Speaker 9 (01:19:19):
Text of the day goes to the person who just
texted a few minutes ago said hey, guys.

Speaker 2 (01:19:25):
Welcome back. Been a while, just so you know.

Speaker 9 (01:19:28):
They now use a net hanging from a rim in
basketball and the goldposter all the way at the back
of the end zone.

Speaker 2 (01:19:32):
Also, OJ is dead and been gone that long.

Speaker 9 (01:19:39):
Great sex, Yeah it is, and I did when and
thanks to andrews himI who was filling in while it
was out. But I was able to hop on with him,
I think every day except one when we were in
the air at the time, flying afterwards, so I was
able to check in and be on and kind of
set the scene from some of the places there. But

(01:19:59):
thanks to Andrew for filling in a while out all right.
I mentioned the college basketball National Championship game tonight, and
then after that we're gonna see, because it's already been
active underway the portal, We're gonna see where some of
these guys wind up. Darien Williams from Texas Tech has

(01:20:21):
entered the portal. Robert Wright, the freshman guard from Baylor,
has entered the portal. The long runs have all so,
you know, made some noise not just through the portal
can but also bringing back some guys, getting Tremon Mark back,
getting Jordan Pope back, I mean, getting some guys back
will help Sean Miller and trying to build his first

(01:20:42):
edition of Long Worn Basketball.

Speaker 7 (01:20:44):
Yeah, it certainly helps to get be able to get
Jordan Pope and Tremont and back, you know, prevents Texas
from basically completely real but rebuilding.

Speaker 2 (01:20:50):
The roster from scratch. Nick Cody, Nick Cody has return.

Speaker 7 (01:20:54):
There's still a few other guys that we haven't heard about,
you know, such as like Jamie fince In, the young
freshman who definitely as a very you know, raw, but
as a certainly high ceiling and exciting ceiling. Devon Pryor
of course obviously now going to Oregon. That hurts to
see him go. And I think the biggest win so
far as Kenda Weaver returning. We did not get to

(01:21:14):
see Kendall play too much this season. He missed pretty
much all of conference play dealing with that hip injury.
When he did come back, I thought Texas was a
completely different basketball team, and we saw them win two
games in the SEC Tournament, beating Vanderbilt and A and M.
He was a big reason why they won those games.
So big for Sean Miller to bring him back. But

(01:21:35):
I mean, you know, the first year Craig obviously will
be a transition year for Texas so far. The two
kids he's gotten now the portal, one from FAU, one
from Purdue.

Speaker 2 (01:21:45):
I got to learn another pronouncer names. First off, that'll
be step one.

Speaker 7 (01:21:48):
But outside of that, you know, they look like developmental projects.
But you know it's going to be a transition year
again for Sean Miller and just kind of you know,
getting used to Texas. And the big thing I think
is trying to find guys in the portal who can
match the physicality in the toughness of the SEC. I
think that's the one thing the previous staff wished it
a little bit better. Was addressed the physicality in the portal,

(01:22:10):
because as you know, in the SEC, it's a very
physical league. It's the reason why Florida and Auburn are
are playing the national championship because they were able to
be the most physical team pretty much every game, night
in and night out during conference player.

Speaker 9 (01:22:23):
Yeah, they were both and Auburn was the number one
overall SEA Now they ended up going out in the
summer final round in Florida, but making the final floid
to day, How are you feeling about the Texas A
and M.

Speaker 2 (01:22:33):
Hire a Bucky McMillan.

Speaker 9 (01:22:35):
Interesting, he's being introduced by the way to Aggie Faithful
even as we speak right now in an event going
on at Rite Arena.

Speaker 7 (01:22:42):
So this is the So they've hired two new basketball coaches,
men's and women's with in the past two years three years.
The previous coach for women's basketball came from Georgia and
then this one from Sandford who you know, Birmingham, Alabama.

Speaker 2 (01:22:55):
We were just there.

Speaker 7 (01:22:56):
Did not reach the sweet sixteen at any point, I
believe it was ninety ninety something in sixty two. Record
during his time at Stanford. I don't know, Greg, this is.

Speaker 9 (01:23:07):
A two regular season Southern Conference championships and one tournament title.

Speaker 7 (01:23:15):
This was probably a really bad year to make a
coaching change, right, And I think that's you know, with
Texas obviously, the whole discussion throughout the year, what was like,
who are you gonna hire? Like I don't want? If
you're like a potential candidates. If Jay Wright is on
that list, then it tells you what kind of year
it was because a lot of the guys that we
heard for some of these names were guys who were
retired or a little bit older who weren't going to

(01:23:36):
come back because there wasn't a lot of up and
coming young coaches. You got the Drake coach right who
was hired by Iowa, but outside of that, there wasn't
a lot of like no brainer names that we were
thinking of. I mean, that's why it took a little
bit for Indiana to make their moves. So for A
and M a real tough, real tough coaching cycle to
lose your head coach.

Speaker 2 (01:23:56):
But you'll not surprise me.

Speaker 7 (01:23:57):
We heard murmers when we were in College station about
Buzz Williams and his staff kind of looking elsewhere and
of course he did spend some time at Maryland, but
I don't know. I think if you're an A and
M fan, you're not too thrilled with this. Higher of course,
you know, time will tell, but again, just a real
tough cycle to be making a head coaching change and
looking for a new head coach.

Speaker 9 (01:24:17):
Is a three times Southern Conference Coach of the Year
twenty two, twenty twenty three and twenty twenty four, ninety
nine and fifty two. He's had twenty plus wins at
each of the past four seasons.

Speaker 2 (01:24:26):
So that's where it is.

Speaker 9 (01:24:26):
He's being introduced right now in College station at an
event at Reed Arena.

Speaker 2 (01:24:36):
What I started to get to earlier in.

Speaker 9 (01:24:39):
When I mentioned on the text line and you mentioned
about the Ranger Sports Network and we got into talking
about that was a text that this morning went to
the morning kickoff group. It went to Mike Hardballharge and
Mark Henry. Now again, I'm guessing, I'm really and truly

(01:25:00):
hoping that this was done tongue in cheek, and I
think it was, because if it wasn't, it it's so
out of reality.

Speaker 2 (01:25:08):
You never know, Craig, I know, I know, but it said.

Speaker 9 (01:25:14):
Texas Longhorne women's basketball will spend the next six months
catching hell from fans and media after what happened last Friday.
The national sports media were right about Texas. The negative
opinions and criticism are all rightfully justified. All this because
they lost on their sports biggest stage. Will happen again
next season? Who's left to believe in?

Speaker 2 (01:25:31):
Now? That sounds tongue and cheek to me. I hope so,
because that's a really stupid tech.

Speaker 9 (01:25:37):
First of all, there wasn't a lot of negative opinions
from national sports media and criticism. It was largely praised
for what Vic Schaffer has done in his five seasons
in getting them finally to the Final four and getting
them over the top. So, you know, hopefully, hopefully that

(01:25:59):
was the case. Gonna catch any hell from fans and
media for what they've done in the five seasons under
Vick Shaeffer, and I think he's only gonna build from there,
all right.

Speaker 2 (01:26:07):
Stay with us up next?

Speaker 9 (01:26:10):
What could other teams and or the Mavericks have gotten
in a Luca Dodget straight. We'll get to that coming
up here. I'm thirteen hunder the zone.

Speaker 2 (01:26:42):
And we continue on a Monday afternoon. Here, I have
a little short in my headphones there for a moment.

Speaker 9 (01:26:48):
That's why I did the stop start again, all right
back here on the program. Right, this is this is
a topic I've been waiting, just waiting to get into
with you, Cam with your knowledge, your fandom, and your
heavy duty interest in the NBA. So I've been wanting

(01:27:08):
to talk about this for a little bit of time,
and now there's even a pulse trigger this morning on
something that just kind of adds to it. All Right,
we've talked a little more than a little bit, but
we've talked a bit about the whole Luca trade to
the Lakers, and then the cause and effect and everything
and what's happened with the Mavericks and what's happened with
the Lakers and all this. But it's all being spiked

(01:27:31):
back up again because the two teams are playing on
Wednesday in Dallas. It's going to be Luca's first game
back as a Laker, playing at the American Airline Center.
So I was going to get your thoughts on that,
and there's been Mark Cuban had a tweet over the
weekend about how the trade for Luca really came about

(01:27:57):
in some fact because of the failure to understand by
Maverick's management the Slovenian way of life and culture and
things like that, which which on one hand seems like
kind of a reach, But on the other hand, when

(01:28:18):
he read further deep into it, you saw what he
was trying to talk about, trying to get to understand
Luke a little bit better.

Speaker 2 (01:28:24):
Now there's gonna be a lot of hard edge people,
and said that doesn't matter. I mean, he's a commodity.

Speaker 9 (01:28:29):
He's the NBA if you can get something form of
the problem most folks have is that the Mavericks apparently
had been fleeced in this deal, although Anthony Davis has
looked pretty good when he's been back. But I planned
on discussing it this week as Luca prepared to return
to Dallas and Bobby Mars former NBA GM in fact
that he Orton worked with him, our friend and colleague

(01:28:51):
on our long run radio broadcast he'd worked with Bobby.
Bobby for ESPN dot Com wrote a piece that's in
to what twenty eight other NBA teams could have traded
for Luka Doncic Now I know this is, you know,
horses out of the barn before you shut the gate.
But he started off by saying, what if the Dallas

(01:29:13):
Mavericks had made Luka Doncics available to.

Speaker 2 (01:29:15):
All twenty nine other teams?

Speaker 9 (01:29:19):
He said, it's a question the team executives across the
league pondered in the early hours of February second, when
the NBA world was still coming to grips with the
blockbuster that sent Doncich to the Lakers and.

Speaker 2 (01:29:30):
Anthony Davis to Dallas.

Speaker 9 (01:29:31):
The Lakers were the only team that the Mavericks General
manager Nico Harrison spoke to about a deal. He said,
to answer that question, we examined the teams that didn't
land Doncic and put together the framework of twenty eight
separate and hypothetical trades for the five time All NBA guard,
plus what else General manager Rob Pelinka and the Lakers

(01:29:52):
could have offered, and he says they're multiple caveats to
the exercise. The trade dialogue was complex. Bill on confidentiality,
Genie bust, the Lakers owner, said, if it had leaked
out and the trade end happened, that would really be
unfair to the progress that the coaching staff had made
with the team because it's a huge distraction. Okay, second

(01:30:14):
caveat infricacies of the salary cap and the apron rules
that explain to folks the apron rules.

Speaker 7 (01:30:21):
Oh, that's a little bit tough. So there's basically there's
a salary cap, right yep. But to prevent teams from
going into the going past the salary cap and spend
a lot of money like the Lakers do or seventy
six ers whatever, there is a first apron in the
second apron that basically will penalize the team and the
owners for being a certain amount of money over the

(01:30:42):
salary cap, and there's certain punishments. So the first apron
is bad, the second aprons really bad. Basically, if you're
the second apron, there's certain things you can't do, like
you can't trade for certain players, you can't sign certain players.
So basically it's all set up to penalized, penalized teams
from being heavy spenders, because't you know in baseball, like

(01:31:02):
your Dodgers, you know that basically buy anything they want NBA, but.

Speaker 9 (01:31:06):
They pay the luxury tax on that, which is the
basics to have a first apron or a second apron.
That's kind of luck. In golf, you know, the apron
off the green. You know, you're not on the green,
so you're kind of in the apron.

Speaker 2 (01:31:18):
Is that?

Speaker 6 (01:31:19):
Is that?

Speaker 2 (01:31:19):
What is that? What's meant by that? I don't know anyway.

Speaker 9 (01:31:21):
All Right, So they had that the Mavericks were five
hundred and twenty six million below the first apron, and
they needed Anthony Davis to waive his five point one
million dollar trade bonus. So and then finally he said,
they said, we took into considerations of Dogis, who could
become a free agent in the summer twenty twenty six,
might not sign an extension.

Speaker 2 (01:31:43):
With his new team.

Speaker 9 (01:31:44):
So the hypothetical trade packages for some of the rebuilding
teams are watered down. Okay, so anyway to recap the
Lakers sent Anthony Davis Max Christie twenty twenty nine unprotected
first round pick. They say what they could have offered
was Anthony Davis, Austin Reeves, a twenty twenty nine unprotected

(01:32:05):
first round pick, a twenty thirty first round swap, and
a twenty thirty one unprotected first round pick. That's where
they're pointing to the fleecing that the Mavericks had done
to them and the inexperience that Nico Harrison and his
and his team did that. They could have asked for
much more and did not do it. So even Mark

(01:32:25):
Cuban said the team should have gotten more from the Lakers.
Okay best offers for Dallas Sela the strike It Cavaliers
could have offered Darius Garland, Jared Allen former long one
and a twenty thirty one unprotected first round pick. I
already liked that deal better than the one that they

(01:32:46):
do with the Lakers. I think every deal in this
article will be locked under the one. Mavericks timber Las Okay.
Rockets could have offered Dylan Brooks, Reed Shepherd, Jabari Smith
kay but two unprotected first round picks. Twenty twenty five
this draft thea Phoenix in twenty twenty seven the Phoenix,

(01:33:08):
So the draft picks make that worthwhile swaps of all
star guards. Hawks could have offered Trey Young and is
it pronouncer Yekung Gongku Yeah okay and and twenty twenty
five unprotected first round pick via the Lakers twenty twenty

(01:33:29):
nine unprotected first round pick. Hornets could have offered LaMelo
Ball Mark Williams Okay, but twenty twenty seven first round
pick twenty twenty seven top fourteen protected first round pick.
Clippers could offer James Harden, Terrence Mann twenty thirty first
round pick swap twenty thirty one unprotected first round pick.

(01:33:52):
Pistons could have offered Obias Harris and Auscer Thompson, Ron
Holland and two unprotected picks in twenty seven and twenty nine.
Warriors could offer Andrew Wiggins, Jonathan Minga, Brandon Pozemski, Gary
pateon the second and four picks, two unprotected first and
two first round picks if one through twenty. Anyway, it

(01:34:16):
goes on to a Miles Turner, Obi Topping, Aaron Neestmuth,
then a Dyck mc thurno with the Pacers really have
offered all of that plus two unprotected first round picks
if they were then, and that's that makes the Mavericks
deal look even worse. Anyway, it goes on and on Sixers,
Paul George, Jared McLain, four first round picks, three unprotected,

(01:34:39):
one protected, Heat bam Adebayou Heywood, Heismith, I Mean Hot Kaz,
two unprotected first round picks, Nicks, Karl Anthony Townsend, one
unprotected pick in this year's drafted. So I guess the
bottom line is, as Luca prepares to come back to Dallas,

(01:35:00):
you're feeling the old wounds all over again, saying and
Bobby Marx is saying, the research they did reveals to
them the Mavericks, what we already knew, could have gotten
a lot more from what from the Lakers than what
they got.

Speaker 7 (01:35:13):
You're just rubbing dirt into the mavericks fans wounds right now.
They're listening to this just in absolute tears, right all right.

Speaker 9 (01:35:22):
I just I wanted to talk to you about this,
and then when this article came out in this Sport,
I was like, oh, I got it. Yeah, we got
to dump into this, and you're right. Basically, what it
comes down to is, no matter who they could have
made a deal with, the Mavericks could have made out
better than what they did. Instead, they get ready to

(01:35:42):
face Luca and the Lakers on Wednesday night having what
they have. All right, We'll be back to wrap up
today's program on thirteen under the Zone
