Speaker 1 (00:01):
I welcome still not dead again today.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
The internets that I had asked it with, Am I not?
I wonder did stay? I woke up still not dead
again today.
Speaker 3 (00:19):
That's how we all feel after a Texas OU game.
You know, we woke up still not feeling dead today.
You know I felt pretty tired after that, but you
know it all worked out all right. We welcome Youack
to the program here on thirteen under the zone, Craig
Way with you. It's time for a weekly conversation with
the editor in chief of Dave Campus, Texas Football magazine,
who himself has awakened some mornings and said, Hey, I
(00:41):
woke up not dead again today.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
That's Greg Tipper. Am I right about that tip?
Speaker 4 (00:47):
Every day since nineteen eighty six.
Speaker 5 (00:49):
I've done it and it's one of my great achievements. Now, Craiglay,
before we get going, I.
Speaker 4 (00:53):
Do have a question because you mentioned Texas.
Speaker 5 (00:55):
So you yeah, you you were there obviously calling the
game for Longhorns and the victory there.
Speaker 4 (01:04):
How many corny dogs did you have?
Speaker 6 (01:07):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (01:08):
In one sitting? Just one? In one?
Speaker 3 (01:12):
The keywords there are in one sitting I was under
I was under direct orders to bring one back since
Linda couldn't make the trip. So what I did was,
and I kind of mentioned this yesterday in the air,
but what I did was I got ready to leave,
and I was taking our sideline reporter, Will Matthews with me.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
We were going to drop him off back of the hotel.
Speaker 3 (01:33):
So, uh, last year, Will and I and Linda stopped
at a Fletcher's Corny Dog stand on the way out
and got one on our way out of the stadium.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
You know, the dynamic has changed for me. Tip.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
I used to have it for breakfast when we had
the eleven AM kicks.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
Now it's in two thirty.
Speaker 3 (01:51):
I find it more appealing to wait until after the game,
because you know, they served barbecue and the pregame media
meal and all that sort of stuff.
Speaker 5 (02:00):
My ask is that our Mike Craven was at the
game as you do when you write college football for
day Candle Sexist Football, and he had a pregame corny
dog and a.
Speaker 4 (02:12):
Postgame corny dog. And I told him in our meeting.
Speaker 5 (02:14):
On Monday that I have never ever been prouder to
approve an expense report than I was the one that.
Speaker 1 (02:23):
Mike Craven submitted for.
Speaker 4 (02:24):
His pre and post game corny dog.
Speaker 5 (02:26):
That's just that's just doing it right in my opinion,
and giving the people what they want.
Speaker 4 (02:31):
And having the necessary fuel to do it.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
Hey, the mere fact that you're approving an expense report
for a Fletcher's corny dog says it.
Speaker 4 (02:38):
All.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
That says all.
Speaker 3 (02:39):
And so so what I did was this time after
the win, Will Matthews and I get ready to leave
and I tell him, I said, I'm under orders. I
got to get a corn dog for Linda and take
it back. So I got to take it home. I mean,
she says, the miracles of the modern air frar, you know,
would make it takes brand news. So we go down
and I get free one that I ate on the spot,
(03:03):
and Will and I took a photo together like we
did last year, the corn corn dogs on it. So
one I eat homeless spot. I wrapped two in a
plastic bag and stuck it in my backpack and drove
it back to Georgetown. And my backpack has this wonderful
aroma of corn dogs. Afterwards, but we Linda heat it
up in the air fire for lunch on Sunday and bingo,
(03:24):
they came out great.
Speaker 5 (03:25):
So well, let me tell you something that I don't
need to know how much you paid for the corny dog,
but I will tell you that what we call that
aroma that now inhabits your backpack, that's what you call
a fringe benefit, you know, right, Those are the things
that you're not necessarily paying for, but you.
Speaker 4 (03:41):
Get as an aside.
Speaker 1 (03:43):
So so good for you.
Speaker 4 (03:44):
I'm glad you.
Speaker 5 (03:45):
I'm glad you're certainly getting your money's worth.
Speaker 3 (03:46):
And then some from that answered your questions. Eighteen eighteen
coupons and I think it. Yeah, twenty coupons for twenty dollars,
so you do the math. So yeah, but it was
worth it. Given Saturday the way it went down, I
didn't mind spending fifty four dollars on three corn dogs.
Speaker 2 (04:04):
You know, it's worked, okay.
Speaker 3 (04:08):
That Texas win kind of popped the Longhorns back up
in the minds of Mike Craven and the staff didn't
in terms of your FBS power pole.
Speaker 4 (04:18):
Yeah, most certainly.
Speaker 5 (04:19):
And I think that, you know, Texas fans are probably
thinking the same thing that we're thinking, which is where
has that been?
Speaker 3 (04:25):
Well?
Speaker 2 (04:26):
What was that all about?
Speaker 5 (04:27):
And certainly I think it's easy in hindsight to look
at and say well, yeah, the Texan defense played fantastic
against a wounded Oklahoma team and give a lot of credit,
I think to the defensive staff for game planning against
a team, an offense in Oklahoma that was without a
number of their weapons that least at full strength, we
can say. But furthermore, I thought that was the best
(04:49):
overall game that we have seen in a real sense
from arch Manning. And the numbers are not going to
blow you away, but what he was able to do
as far as taking care of the football, as far
as putting it on time winners delivery, I thought was impressive,
and especially there in the second half, I thought that
they really roared to life and that is a lot
(05:10):
more what we've wanted to see. I think when you
take a look at this Texas team, it's it's going
to be a different I think we have to wrap
our minds around the fact that this is going to
be a different team than we thought we were going
to get. It's an offense that is not going to be,
you know, up near the top of the SEC.
Speaker 4 (05:28):
It's going to be in the bottom half the SEC.
Speaker 5 (05:30):
But it's going to be a borderline elite defense that
is capable of holding them in every game possible, and
that's okay, you can win like that. There's a lot
of teams that win like that.
Speaker 1 (05:41):
We're going to hold you in it long enough and then.
Speaker 5 (05:43):
Win the game with a big play when with field position,
when with a couple of plays offensively, I think it
is just a matter of kind of readjusting those priors
and understanding that, Okay, this is not going to see
be seen that goes out there and hangs fifty points
every time they put on their cleats. Instead, it's going
to be a team that relies on the defense. It's
(06:04):
going to be a team that relies on coming up
with big plays and then just get those big plays.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
In the special teams. I thought that that.
Speaker 5 (06:11):
Pun return from Ryan Niblett, needless to say, was the
biggest game play in the game, because not only did
it obviously a scoring play, but obviously it also flips
the field position and it changes the entire game in
that regard. So those special teams plays that are going
to be really important to say three phases type game,
and where in Texas may not be as gifted in
(06:33):
the offensive side as we thought they were.
Speaker 3 (06:35):
Going to be.
Speaker 5 (06:36):
The defense and the special teams look pretty sound and
if they can win there, they've.
Speaker 1 (06:40):
Got an opportunity to still make some noise.
Speaker 4 (06:41):
And everything's still right.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
There in front of them, no doubt about it. Let
me ask you about Texas.
Speaker 3 (06:46):
Tack and the Red Raiders are being viewed as being
a serious, certainly Big twelve championship contender. They can take
a major step four this week of thing in temp
this week they come out of the game against Kansas
having beaten them pretty well and kept them at arm's length.
(07:07):
But the story that kept coming out of everybody's talking
about is the tortillas. And I've been around tech games
for years where the tortillas were sent flying. So now
they finally actually got penalized twice for it because they're told,
you know, you get two warnings and then that's it.
And and Kirby Hocutt actually said, hey, we're okay with
get the warning for an opening kick hall, but fans
(07:29):
continued to do that. And Joey McGuire, a friend to
both of us, has said he has a real concern
that it might wind up costing them. During a game
they took a couple of fifteen yarders in the game.
It wasn't that big a deal the other night against Kansas.
But it makes for an intriguing sidebar, does it not?
To this great season Texas Tech is having.
Speaker 5 (07:51):
Look the fashion at Texas Tech and the conversation around
them is saying art he is going to cost them
a spot in a college football playoff. That's pretty good,
pretty good problems, I would say on the South plays.
Speaker 6 (08:06):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (08:06):
But but yeah, look, this is a you know, obviously
that is a big tradition there. The Big twelve has
tried to rein it in. I understand there's a player
safety involvement, and and if you're going to allow throwing tortillas,
I understand if there's a concern that people.
Speaker 1 (08:21):
Might be throwing something else, something harder or something.
Speaker 4 (08:23):
Like that, I get it. And also come on, like we're.
Speaker 5 (08:27):
Throwing tortillas here, And that again speaks to the fact
that that these are the biggest problems facing.
Speaker 4 (08:33):
Texas Tech right now.
Speaker 5 (08:34):
Because uh, I texted my friend this who is a
long suffering.
Speaker 4 (08:39):
Texas Tech fan.
Speaker 5 (08:40):
I mean, look, Texas Tech hasn't won outright conference championship
since uh since way way away before I was born, and.
Speaker 4 (08:47):
This is I.
Speaker 5 (08:49):
I texted him and I said, we need to grapple
with the idea that Texa Tech is an absolute wagon
this year, and we take.
Speaker 4 (08:56):
A look at the scene.
Speaker 5 (08:58):
I'm having trouble finding a weakness here because normally, with
the old Texas Tech you would say, Okay, well, yeah
they can score, but can they stop anybody?
Speaker 4 (09:08):
Well, I make the argument that their defense maybe better
than their offense.
Speaker 5 (09:12):
And what they've been able to do defensively has been spectacular.
If you take a look we've recently today we put
out our twenty twenty five mid Season All Texas College Team.
David Bailey, the defensive end, is our mid season Defensive
Player of the Year. Think about that, and then you've
also got, you know, other guys on the Tech Tech
defense who have steps up in a big way. Jacob
(09:33):
Rodriguez is on there, Lee Hunter is on there. You know,
Romelo Height is on there. Think about the Texas Tech
defense having multiple pre you know, mid season All Texas
College Team guys on the roster. That is a remarkable
feat that they've done. And then by the way their
offense continues to roll, and even when the passing game
(09:54):
has been in fits and starts.
Speaker 4 (09:55):
They can just hand the ball off the Cameron Dickie
and he can run for as much as he wants.
Speaker 5 (10:00):
This Texas Tech team is serious business, and I think
the nation is starting to take notice. And maybe it's
just the time of the year. It's mid season and
now you've won six games, and six and Oh feels
feels legit right more than two and oh does. But
I think everyone's starting to pay attention to what's going on.
Speaker 2 (10:17):
In Love It.
Speaker 5 (10:18):
And if their biggest problem is that they got to
stop at the students from throwing tortillas, I would say
that Joey Luire's loving.
Speaker 4 (10:24):
A pretty charmed life.
Speaker 3 (10:26):
A visiting with Greg Tepper, editor in chief Tape Campbell's
Texas Football magazine here on the Craig Wave Show, where.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
The producer Jay Carmen is a question for you.
Speaker 6 (10:35):
Well, we always keep an eye on the text line,
and somebody wrote in love the Dave Campbell's Texas Football segments,
But Temper, what are your thoughts on North Texas versus UTSA.
I know there were four Me and Green players on
that mid season All Texas team. They weren't able to
get it done in front of the sellout crowd. What
do you make of them? As kind of a slight
favorite this week against the road Runners, at least according
(10:55):
to the odds makers.
Speaker 4 (10:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (10:58):
So North Texas coming off of last week where we
spent a lot of time talking about that big game,
you know, going up against South Florida, and an opportunity
to really make a statement, and it's also lat playing
simple and a lot of the worst tendencies of North
Texas kind of came to the forefront, especially defensively, where
they were unable to stop what has been a good
(11:20):
USF team, but certainly not a defense or an offense
you should be given.
Speaker 4 (11:24):
Up sixty plus points to.
Speaker 5 (11:26):
Now you have an opportunity to get back on the
good book against a UTSA team that's feeling better about themselves,
you know, own the count well, I think was really
good last week in their route of rice through three
touchdown passes.
Speaker 4 (11:39):
This is I think.
Speaker 5 (11:40):
If you are North Texas, you have got to be
on alert here because there's a UTSA team that I
think will take this game very personally.
Speaker 1 (11:49):
I think that is something that Jeff Traylor does very well.
Speaker 5 (11:51):
To say, hey, these are the teams that especially you know,
I don't know if he used this type of language
in the locker room, because these are the guys that
didn't recruit you. You chose you over North Texas. Let's
go approve why you chose UTSA over North Texas. He's
very good at riling his team up against Texas teams.
That's one thing that I think if you're in North Texas,
you got to keep an eye out on so one
(12:11):
of the things. The other thing about it is that
for UTSA, they've got to find a way to slow
down this North Texas offense because even though they obviously
lost last week, the offense continues to hum and Eric
Morris is continuing to rise up those ever expanding coaching.
Speaker 4 (12:27):
Lists across the nation.
Speaker 5 (12:30):
And so if you are UTSA, you've got to find
a couple of stops. And I think that's got to
start upfront and get pressure without blitzing. I think that's
one of the things that UTSA has got trouble with
upfront is finding a way to get pressure on the
quarterback without sending extra blitzers. So this game is fascinating.
I think North Texas is probably your favorite. I think
they've they've looked to the part more consistently than UTSA.
(12:51):
But we also know that UCSA takes these games extremely
seriously and they would love nothing more than to continue
to derail a North Texas dream season.
Speaker 3 (13:01):
Let's shift to high school football now, and did Summer Creeks?
Speaker 2 (13:07):
It certainly raised my eyebrows lost to C. E.
Speaker 3 (13:09):
King.
Speaker 2 (13:09):
How does that shake up in your mind?
Speaker 3 (13:11):
Not only six A and six A Division two, I
guess in specific ultimately, but also even the greater Houston
area about who's supposed to be the best in the
Greater Houston area right.
Speaker 4 (13:20):
Now, Paul, let me tell you something.
Speaker 5 (13:23):
I think that ce King announced their arrival in a
big way and what they did last week.
Speaker 4 (13:30):
I mean that game ended.
Speaker 5 (13:31):
Up being a lot closer than the score would or
a lot closer than it really played.
Speaker 4 (13:38):
Out to be.
Speaker 5 (13:38):
It is forty two to twenty eight, but maybe no
mistink about it.
Speaker 4 (13:41):
C E. King was in complete command.
Speaker 5 (13:43):
I think there are forty two to seven at halftime
in that ballgame. They looked every bit the part of
a state championship contender. And if you watch ce King,
the team speed is really striking, really strike Eon Sim's
their running back is an app lose bottle of electricity
back there. He has been terrific and they are going.
Speaker 4 (14:04):
To be very, very dangerous.
Speaker 5 (14:05):
Now they still have North Shore on the horizon and
that is going to be obviously a huge, huge game.
But here's the thing, it doesn't really it matters that.
Speaker 4 (14:12):
It doesn't every game matters.
Speaker 5 (14:13):
I want to be very clear, But as far as
Division two is concerned, likely it's going to be ce
King and Summer Creek going to the Division two bracket.
And if that's the case, the c E King's already
got a gate, the tiebreaker and a game in hand
on Summer Creek. Something would have to go catastrophically wrong
for Ceeking not to.
Speaker 4 (14:31):
Be the number one seed in Division two.
Speaker 5 (14:33):
And I will tell you this, I think Ceking can
win Region three of Division two. Now, one thing that's
of note is that if you look on Texas Football
dot Com, that's STEP's latest six A playoff projections as
the Katie Tigers going to the Division two bracket, which
should obviously change things in a big way. That is
inserting a team that is a legit state changing contender
(14:54):
into that into that bracket.
Speaker 4 (14:56):
But if whether or.
Speaker 5 (14:57):
Not that's the case, I still think you look at
se e King and what they've been able to do
and you need to start. We need to start talking
about them in very serious terms. Twenty three six A remains,
in my opinion, the power of nexus. But when you
kind of zoom out and you start taking a look
at at Region three of six A, Division two, they
look even more. See King looks even more the kind
(15:20):
of team that can go out there and play into December.
Speaker 4 (15:24):
They have been not good to start the year.
Speaker 3 (15:27):
I'm gonna throw four names at you. It's kind of
almost like blind resume. But it's not because I'm going
to give you their names. I just want to. It's
it's kind of looking at them blind a little bit
and getting your thoughts which of these undefeated teams is
for real and which one is kind of all right?
So there's four of them. You got a six and
(15:47):
O Dickinson, a six and oh Harlan from San Antonio.
You have a five and o South Grand Prairie, and
you have a six Magnolia.
Speaker 5 (16:03):
The one that I'm taking most seriously to stay in
the Houston area would be Dickinson. This is a Dickinson
team that they have their best team in years. You
remember we just got done talking about the King. They're
only lost on the year is to Dickinson. Dickinson also
has a win on the road at Katie. They also
have a win over Sci Fi by multiple scores.
Speaker 4 (16:24):
They have been terrific.
Speaker 5 (16:25):
They're now in the part of the schedule it's not
as pronounced, but the example I use is South o'cliff.
Speaker 4 (16:33):
This is the time of the year where we stopped talking.
Speaker 5 (16:35):
About South o'cliff because they go into district play and
they're just a lot better than every team in their district,
so they don't play interesting games. That's kind of where
we're at right now with Dickinson. They're almost certainly going
to finish ten to oh and I think they are
a very very serious contender.
Speaker 4 (16:48):
That is one team that I'm keeping an eye on.
Speaker 5 (16:51):
If I were to sell one of those, I might
look at South Grand Prairie and look. Not to say
anything negative about Leyden Delays Ball Club. I think he
has been such a revelation for that program.
Speaker 4 (17:03):
They're taking over them.
Speaker 1 (17:04):
But I take a look at their schedule and the teams.
Speaker 4 (17:07):
That they've beaten.
Speaker 5 (17:08):
Their best win on the year is probably their win
over Arlington.
Speaker 4 (17:12):
Which is good, but I'm.
Speaker 5 (17:14):
Not sure they've played necessarily anybody Furthermore, in that week
two what end up being a cancelation against Keller timber
Creek if that's a winless Keller timber Creek team, but
they had roared back to tie the game in the
third quarter of that game before it got called. I
have some questions about them, specifically whether or not they
(17:35):
their strength of schedule. But look, you look at the
way that this game sixty has has shaken out.
Speaker 4 (17:41):
I think they're the best team there.
Speaker 5 (17:42):
That regular season finale on the road at Arlington bouis
probably for this injured championship outright.
Speaker 1 (17:50):
But I have some questions as to the strength.
Speaker 5 (17:52):
Of schedule for those Warriors, So that might be the
team that I was selling as far as those undefeated
are concerned.
Speaker 3 (17:58):
Okay, all right, here's what we do, as you like
to call it, the meanest thing we do. Each week,
I give you three games. You tell me which of
these you would transport to. Here's an oddity. I don't
think i've if not ever, I don't think I've done
this very often with you. Two of the games are
right here in our little backyard in the Greater Austin
area six A Lake Travis at Dripping Springs, which has
(18:23):
the extra added caveat of the fact that Lake Travis
is now playing its home games at Drip right now
while the stadium is undergoing construction. However, Dripping Springs is
not only the residential home team, they're also the designated
home team in this game. So you got Lake Travis
at Drip. How About in my backyard practically Georgetown against
(18:45):
shockingly surprisingly Eastview, which our friend Jerry Forrest has as
a Pickham game.
Speaker 2 (18:53):
No surprise here.
Speaker 3 (18:55):
It's being played at the at berkel Bock at the
Georgetown and ISD Athletic Complex since that's their home stadium anyway,
east View is technically the home team for this game.
And then in five A D two you got Anna
at Prosper Walnut Grove, which do you choose.
Speaker 5 (19:14):
Respectfully to Walnut Grove and Anna which is a great
matchup to the quarterbacks and Hayes Hackney from Walnut Grove
and ziondra Williams for Anna.
Speaker 4 (19:23):
This narrows down to the greater Austin area.
Speaker 5 (19:26):
The East View and Georgetown is fascinating and I am
really interested because you the on paper you mentioned that
they are very evenly matched, and also this is one
of those games where there's so much emotion tied up
in it, and and and everything.
Speaker 4 (19:43):
You want to win this game.
Speaker 5 (19:45):
Forget the fact that it's for district standings, and forget
the fact that it's an important game within that district.
You want to win this game because it's it's a
rivalry game. And I think that's going to be a
fantastic game at Burkel Block Field.
Speaker 4 (19:56):
But my eyes go.
Speaker 5 (19:58):
To Dripping Springs at Lake Travis is the only matchup
of unbeaten in the UIL this week, and it is
a huge game. I think we have been, you know,
for Lake Travis. I think there's two teams that actually
kind of flown under the radar as far as undefeated
our concern, you know, Lake Travis kind of bobbing along.
Speaker 4 (20:14):
I think we've just kind of come to expect them.
Speaker 5 (20:17):
I love what Van Hopping, their running back does. I
think he's the real star of that team. And I
think quarterback Luke McBride has stepped up in a big
way for Drip. You know, Chase Ams has stepped up
in a big way at the quarterback spot. But I
think that the real star of that show is a
defense led by Dylan Brasher this also. The other intrigue
of this game and why I'm so fascinated by it,
is that next week you may know, and I say
(20:40):
that you know with a smirk, you may know who
Lake Travis plays next week.
Speaker 6 (20:45):
I do.
Speaker 5 (20:46):
And if you don't know, it's a certain team from
a lake that is west, I would just tell you
this has a real look ahead let down possibility here
for Lake Travis.
Speaker 4 (20:57):
Now.
Speaker 5 (20:57):
I have full confidence that Hank Carter's gonna have his
boys ready, but if they are even thinking a little
bit about who they're playing next week, Dripping Springs is
the wrong team to do that against, because this is
a team that straight up is good.
Speaker 4 (21:10):
Enough to beat them.
Speaker 5 (21:11):
And if they are even considering who they're playing next week,
then they could really fall into a trap. This is
the first time I think that we've got a real,
live trap game in Texas high school football this season.
Speaker 1 (21:22):
So if you're Lake Travis, you better be focused on the.
Speaker 5 (21:25):
Game at hand, because this Dripping Springs team is serious
and would love to take a chunk out of Lake Travis.
I think this is a I think it's the game
of the week in the state this week. I'm really
really fascinated by Lake Travis and Dripping.
Speaker 3 (21:37):
Springs by the way, for those who are curious about this,
Dripping Springs places West like the last game of the year.
Speaker 2 (21:42):
Yeah yeah, and that it's.
Speaker 5 (21:46):
This is one of those districts where there's three teams
at the top and this week here in week eight,
we start that kind of battle Royale. We're all going
to match up against one another. So it's kind of
a terrific four week sprint to the finish here in
just your twenty six to six.
Speaker 2 (21:59):
As he's Greg Temper.
Speaker 3 (22:01):
He is the editor in chief of Dave Campbell's Texas
