Speaker 1 (00:00):
Team USA men's basketball still in firm control of things
late third quarter with a seventy to fifty four, Well
now seventy three to fifty seven, so they're still up
sixteen points on South Sudan. Leading score bam At Abayo
sixteen points, he's got five rebounds, Kevin Durant with eleven points,
(00:23):
Derek White off the bench with ten. Lebron James had
ten in the first half. He still is at ten.
So there's your leading scores in the game. But again,
the US is up seventy three to fifty seven on
South Sudan. A win here should probably clinch a spot
in the quarterfinals in the knockout stage for them, but
quite frankly, they're probably expected to sweep through at the
very least the group played before they even get into
(00:46):
the knockout round. But we'll keep you posting on that long.
Worn football team is on the field right now practice
and they have practiced this afternoon. They have another one
tomorrow afternoon as head coach Steve Sarkisian starts to get
them ready. Of course, they've been doing individual things and
conditioning things throughout the summer to be conditioned for these
(01:07):
kinds of conditions, the kind of heat that is that
they'll expect exactly one month from today. Today is July
thirty first. It will be August thirty first when the
Long Orange kick off the brand new twenty twenty four
season at home against the Colorado State Rams, and Sarkin
his coaching staff trying to get them ready. That includes
(01:29):
on the defensive side, where Pete Kwakowski, the defensive coordinator,
met with the media yesterday and he talked about a
variety of topics. Was asked about a variety of topics
as well and certainly answered the questions about it, and
one of those was, you know how important it is
to have guys who are well, let's just say long
in the tooth back on the roster. David Benda was
(01:54):
recruited by Tom Herman and was in the systemu of
Tom Hermon before coach Herman was relieved of his duties
and Sorry came in to be the head coach. So
David Benda has played in different systems, under different offensive coordinators,
under different head coaches. But he's just like that constant
(02:15):
level lake. You know he's going to be there, you
know he's and he has been very reliable, very dependable,
and so when Pete quick Kowski was asked about him,
he said, that's a comfort for a position coach or
a coordinator to be that pleased with how a guy
like then that in a high yield position like linebacker
(02:36):
continues to be the constant source of consistent play that
they're looking for.
Speaker 2 (02:42):
David's awesome because you know he's been here from day one,
He's been through the ups and the downs, and his
attitude is so positive. He's a longhorn, you believe, and
who leads for an orange and he's a really good
a practice player in the meetings. He's just an awesome
(03:04):
guy to have back because because of those gist traits
that you get the uh that he brings every day,
and he can he can play metal and yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
he'll be the like if he's out there with the
hand and be the time or the will backer and
then you know, amphony's a bloat party the next guys
(03:26):
over there.
Speaker 1 (03:27):
Yeah, it's a guy you can play inside and play outside.
Very smart, high level, high intelligence guy, great communicator. Uh.
So it's good to have a guy like bending back
there to really rely on as well. Now, uh, the
other position that draws a great deal of curiosity. And
what good reason totally understand this is is what's called
the star position. It's basically your your nickel position. Of course,
(03:51):
long words of you know, boundary corner and field corner
what they call and the boundary safety in the field
safety end of the star who can be you can
line up depending on what the alignment of the opposing
offense can be and where the receivers are and what
the pattern looks like and what they're reading is where
that star lines up and moves to to execute. He's
(04:13):
got to be a good tackler. He's got to be
really sharp in terms of his thinking process. So they've
had several different guys who have played that position. Uh
Shaddy Barron is one of those guys. Jalen Gilbo is
one of those guys. Those are two of the guys
about Baron another one of those six year seniors. And
so those are two guys Jaday and and uh and
(04:34):
uh also Jalen that's a Baron and Gilbo. But there's
other guys as well. So PK was asked who right now,
if he's going to label somebody who would be the star.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
What's between Gilbo, Jaylen Gilbo and uh Jada and places
plash four or two. Gilbo's had an unbelievable outstanding postseason,
so get him back to where he was conference wise
(05:06):
in his freshman year. I think we're starting to see
and see that again until optimistic coo. Either one of
those guys, remember begot at that position. But if your
bookie step up, then could give you some diffictings from John.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
Yeah, there's there's several guys, especially in the secondary, that
PK went on to describe as guys who were comers
and guys who could really plays that Manny Muhammad of
course comes off a tremendous freshman campaign. You have him
in the back. Derek Williams also really really solid as
a freshman. Andrew mccoob is the LBJ product who transferred
(05:46):
in from Clemson back in and and Gavin Holmes who
transferred in last year from wake Forest Trade. Moore's a
guy whould transferred in in that buck position. But I
was talking about the secondary eyes and the corners and
the safeties, and then there's another guy who might be
able to make a difference for them as well. And
(06:09):
that's another guy in the corner, and that's jvon Cole,
the guy who transferred in from San Jose State.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
He's coming along. He had a good He's another guy
that the Strength touched before high on this this summer
as far as doing doing things right, good effort and
great attitude. Yeah, he's just got a he's got together
and get get his get his feet, what more within
within the system so he's comfortable.
Speaker 1 (06:34):
And then moving to the edge, because it's been largely
discussed in saying if there's the question with regard to
the defense, most folks like to start with the defensive line. Now,
if you ask Sark about that, he'll say, I'm not
so certain about that. He said, we may not have
the quote unquote star power that we had going into
(06:57):
the year, the known star power of to and Andre
Sweat and Byron Murphy. We've got a lot of depth,
a lot of guys who could play both in the
interior and then on the outside. So let's start with
the outside in talking about a guy like Baron Surrell,
and then also another guy who could make a difference
on the edge and has and looked really really good,
(07:20):
uh in the in the spring is Ethan Burke. So
those were two guys who said there are are the
kind of guys who can set the edge and make
a big difference. Uh for you those those guys, but
there's other guys as well. The edge position in general
very important.
Speaker 2 (07:37):
They've been We've got some got some lank, got some twitch,
got some some power, some good combination. The leader of
that group is Baron Surrel. He's coming back for his
fourth year and he's uh, he's all business. And yet
it's another guys that are really good offseason and he's
(07:59):
he's a really good for that room. And the addition
of Trey and Colin are gonna you know, at a
different element to that room what they can do coming
off the edge.
Speaker 1 (08:14):
And then.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
Colton Vassik is healthy, right, and so see what he
can do. And then you know, Burke's been a mary
productive player for us and kind of his length is
is hard to deal with. But there's a then really
only Yeah, it's you know on my MISSI ever Sina
a new freshman. We'll see how see how he how
(08:38):
he progresses. But yeah, I forgot about just all seven
of them. Yeah, Justice is definitely a guy's played it
out and he can play.
Speaker 1 (08:50):
Feed the position Yeah, that's another guy Justice Thinkley who
could make a difference there. But rolling it back to
Baron Currell and Ethan Burke set the edge eyes they
were they made all the difference or or made a
big difference when in talking about uh, the edge is
is those guys in their veterans. Burke of course was
(09:11):
a youngster who really stepped up last year. Sorel is
a senior now, the guy from New Orleans. So those
two guys on the flanks, on the edge, Currel and
Burke are guys the PK says he's going to look
to for production and leadership.
Speaker 2 (09:26):
Yeah, set the edge class in the pocket, disrupting the quarterback,
create some turnovers, and then just the gritty, the grittiness,
the toughness that they've got with and how they prepare it.
We can oak out is that's what you want as
(09:47):
a coach from those guys and daft season getting faster, quicker, stronger,
instructive THI things.
Speaker 1 (09:57):
Rather those guys and in that what we're hearing they're
going to have to be in order to succeed in
the SEC Faster, quaker, stronger, all of that kind of stuff.
