Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good afternoon, everybody.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
Welcome to the broadcast this afternoon the program here on
Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone. My name is
Craig Way. Glad to be with you this afternoon. The
producer back in the house and has us back comfortably
ensconced in the big studio here. The big piece of
Chicken studio is done another than Cameron D. Parker that
(00:23):
he on the birth certificate stands for Dallas as in
his favorite pro football team, who has been diligently going
through training camp workouts, Michael Parson's contract situation notwithstanding, But
so far, I guess so good coming out.
Speaker 1 (00:42):
I have ox start, right, isn't that what we're hearing?
Speaker 3 (00:45):
I mean, you know, Tyler Geiton had what we thought
to be a season ending injury. Just turns out will
be out four to six weeks, which is probably the
best case. But it does hurt to not have him
go through a full camp because he's going to be
a big part of this Cowboys team at tackle, so
he's gonna miss some ground there, I mean weak ones
against Philadelphia, so that's a tough matchup there, So it
(01:08):
hurts that he got hurt. But fortunately he's on a
seizing endie injury. But I think so far everything's come
out of camp has been good. I think the vibes
are high around Brian Schottenheimer. I think it turns out
that he actually might be a good ball coach, but
remains to be seen.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
Uh are you do? We have some shotty sound today?
Think so oh good? Okay, So we'll hear from the
Cowboys head coach and and and by the way, your approach,
I guess is the best way to describe it. Your
(01:44):
I guess your your philosophy on everything right now.
Speaker 1 (01:50):
With the Cowboys.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
Seems to match what a lot of folks, uh, you know,
a lot of folks, uh frame of mind is on
this tail. You know, I even understanding your current plight
and your current outlook on things like that. Even with
(02:12):
all of that, I understand where the fan you are.
My best friend was in town last weekend. He has
he grew up in the Dallas Fort Worth area, and
so he's been a Cowboys fan since the late sixties
when he was a little kid, and so he's kind
of been up and down and up and down. You know,
(02:33):
I've been frustrated just like you. But you know what
he said to me the other night. He's at the house.
The other night he said, you know what I'm hearing
so far sounds pretty encouraging from shoddy.
Speaker 1 (02:42):
Uh, you know, Jerry is what Jerry is.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
But kind of like a little bit kind of optimistic
about the It almost mirrored exactly what you've been saying
about it. So Cowboy fans, I think in general, because
I've heard that perspective from other Cowboy fans as well,
that they're feeling kind of good about things. Maybe it's
just I don't know, is it would it be safe
(03:07):
to say it's kind of a breath of fresh air,
just hearing a different vantage point, hearing something different from
from a head coach than what you because I know
you just got you got really worn down to Mike McCarthy,
didn't you.
Speaker 3 (03:23):
Well, it's refreshing to hear a football coach that actually
seems to know football. And I'm not saying like Mike
McCarthy or Jason Garrett didn't because obviously they didn't get
to where they were at. You don't win a ring
if you don't have some idea what you're doing right.
But there are more on the you know, the CEO
type side and you know that can fit a program,
(03:44):
can fit a football team.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
Sometimes it doesn't.
Speaker 3 (03:46):
And I don't think it fits the Dallas Cowboys culture
because you have all the whole media circus show that
goes on, whether it's Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones in
the latest contract, what happens during the football season, with
all the coverage, you know, with with people touring the Star.
I think what the Cowboys need is to help combat
(04:06):
all that is to have a true ex'es and o's
a true leader, a true culture builder as the head coach.
And I don't think the Dallas Cowboys have really had that.
And quite some time, they've had coaches who were that
at one point in their career, like Wade Phillips and
Bill Parcells, but I think history shows that they were
maybe past their prime as Bacon head coach. Obviously, Wade
(04:27):
Phillips was a great defensive coordinator for the for the Rams,
for your football club, Craig Way. But you know, as
a head coach, you know, obviously they kind of batted
heads with Jerry Jones. And it seems like so far,
and you know, we'll see in a year or two,
but it seems like Schottenheimer understands, you know, what he's
dealing with with the Jones family, but also knows the
(04:51):
exes and o's and knows what it takes to build
a winning football club. Obviously, his dad, I know he
had his you know, his his failures, the playoffs, you
know from time to time. But he was a fantastic
football coach. And Schottenheimer's had many opportunities. You know, He's
interviewed for head coaching jobs. He's turned down some head
coaching jobs, whether it was with Jacksonville or with Buffalo,
(05:15):
and he thought possibly maybe his time of being a
head coach that passed him by. There was a fantastic
article in the Athletic about this, and this is the
opportunity he got. But he was referred to as Sean
mcfabe before Sean mcfay. So he has that ingenuity and
I think it's worked out in the Cowboys favor that
he kind of fell into the Jones family lap this
(05:36):
past offseason when Jerry and Mike McCarthy couldn't hammer down
a deal to keep McCarthy as the head coach, and
here comes Schottenheimer who was on his way out. He
was going to take another coaching job with another football
team and it worked out. So I think I speak
for a lot of Cowboy fans that were optimistic that
(05:56):
he can be a great football coach. The question is
can he won handle that while also dealing with the
Jones family and the way they handle contracts and the
way they negotiate with players and how they deal with
the circus of the media. Needs to show how good
a coach he could be and can you know, can
Dax stay healthy? Well this offensive line develop into what
(06:19):
I think most Cowboy fans think could possibly be a
really good offensive line when this year is done. But
as we all know, all it takes is one or
two injuries that can really take a season. And that's
why the Guide News at first was very concerning because
Cowboys have a lot of debt that guard, but not really.
Speaker 1 (06:37):
At the tackle position.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
So you know, if Terren Steele or Tyler Guy can
go down for an extended period of time during the
regular season, I know the Cowboys have the debt for that,
but there's definitely cope brewing around the Star at this moment.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
I think I'm kind of fascinated by him going into
this year with it for a lot of the reasons
you just laid out. And you know, people who know
me and have heard me say on this program, you know,
I am a fan of the Los Angeles Rams.
Speaker 1 (07:08):
I have been since I was nine.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
Years old, all the way to an inclusive other time
in Saint Louis. I went to several games in Saint Louis.
I've rooted for the uniform, so to speak, as Jerry
Seinfeld would say, and I did. I stayed loyal to
them through them moving to Saint Louis, winning a Super
Bowl there, going back to Los Angeles, having some lean times,
and then building back up under Sean McVay, getting to
(07:32):
a Super Bowl, and then winning a Super Bowl. And
so there's there's that. Having said all of that, a
big reason for why, for I think twenty four years,
twenty three years at least, I was an NFL Sunday
ticket subscriber, and a lot of that was to watch
RAMS games that I couldn't see because of three fifteen
(07:55):
cowboy kickoffs in this market. And so if I wanted
to watch the Rams play, say, you know whatever, Arizona
or whatever on the on the West coast, and it
was kicking off at the same time, or maybe it
was kicking off at three and the Cowboys at three
twenty five. If I didn't have NFL Sunday ticket, I
couldn't watch them. You'd just see highlights. So I had
(08:16):
it for all that time. When it moved from Direct
TV over to YouTube TV, I wondered, you know, because
I wasn't going to subscribe to that. I wasn't going
to go on that because basically anything that was being
offered by YouTube TV was already offered by what I
have with my Direct TV subscription, and I had more
(08:36):
coming out of that. And then I thought, do I
really need to to really want to do it? And
I decided I'm going to try just red zone, only
because I already had red Zone.
Speaker 1 (08:43):
So I thought, okay, I'm going to try red Zone.
Speaker 2 (08:45):
And the first season was a little difficult because the Rams,
I think, were coming off their Super Bowl.
Speaker 1 (08:51):
But I got through it, and it was a little
easier last year and this year.
Speaker 2 (08:55):
I am very intrigued by what the Cowboys will do.
So even in situations where they have parallel kickoff times
or overlapping kickoff times and I we get to see
the Rams play, I'm okay with that. And watch Red
Zone to keep up with what's going on. But I'm
really interested in seeing how the Cowboys are gonna fair
this year, so I'll watch.
Speaker 1 (09:15):
Even if you refuse to watch, I'll watch some games
this year.
Speaker 2 (09:19):
Okay, good, good, you've kind of lifted the ban a
little bit. Yeah, okay, we'll see. We'll see how it goes. Okay,
all right, all right, that's good. Now to college football,
first day of practice for the Texas Longhorns for the
twenty twenty five season. Yesterday we brought you a lot
of sound from coordinators, and we have more today. Yesterday
(09:44):
we heard from Kyle Flood and we heard from Pete Wakowski.
So from Flood and from PK you got to hear
a lot of stuff about what their outlook was on it.
Speaker 1 (09:53):
Today.
Speaker 2 (09:55):
The other coordinators, the special teams coordinator Jeff Banks, who
also happens to the tight ends coach, and with Jack
Hendry's having transferred him from Cal and the preseason all
sec before he ever took a snap with Texas, there's
a lot of intrigue about that, but also about the
special teams change in the kicking game, what's happening in
the return game, we'll hear from Jeff Banks in the
(10:19):
three o'clock hour. Sandwiched around that, we're also going to
hear from a couple.
Speaker 1 (10:25):
Of the position coaches.
Speaker 2 (10:27):
One of those passing game coordinator on the offensive side
is a. J. Milwee, who works very very closely with
sark and the quarterbacks. Now, as you might imagine, you're
gonna hear a lot a lot of conversation, questions and
answers about arch Manning. After all, that's Milwe's, you know,
(10:51):
you might say, his specialty area.
Speaker 1 (10:54):
So you're gonna hear that.
Speaker 2 (10:55):
But also he'll talk about the other quarterbacks and how
and how things are going, and you're gonna hear that.
Coming up here in a few minutes in the four
o'clock hour, we'll visit with an old friend and back
on the Texas coaching staff, this time under Steve Sarkisian
Dwayne Akena, who of course served so many years under
Mac Brown and at one time was the defensive coordinator,
(11:17):
left and came back coach A. Keina never sold his house.
He kept he kept the house that he had in
South Austin. It's when his son Keane was a quarterback
at Akins. He kept that house even through all the
time that he had when he went back out west
to Stanford in Arizona and all this, and so so
(11:38):
it was a pretty easy transition for back in. But
we'll hear from Dwayna Kena about the DBS and and
I think this was was pretty cool because he was
going to be asked about this and he was perfectly
fine with it. Comparisons with this particular safety and certain players.
With some of those he had great seasons with, guys
(12:01):
like Quinton Jammer and Michael Huff and Rod Babers and
Aaron Ross, you know, guys like that. You'll hear him
invoke those names even as he's being asked about guys
like Michael Taff, Jelani McDonald, you know, other guys who
will be hybrids and things of that nature, and his
(12:23):
corners and Derek Williams and all of that that type
of stuff. So that's coming up. We'll have that in
the four o'clock hour. Also, we'll give away two more
copies of Day Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
Speaker 1 (12:34):
We've been giving away.
Speaker 2 (12:37):
The first day, we gave away three just to get
a start, but we've been giving away two copies a day,
and we're going to do that through the rest of this.
Speaker 1 (12:43):
Week and next week.
Speaker 2 (12:44):
So the way that you, of course win a copy
is you have to respond the our talk back feature.
Speaker 1 (12:52):
It's really easy to do. It's not a labor intensive thing.
Speaker 2 (12:55):
That's I wouldn't want that to be the case for
the for the magazine giveaway because we've been giving them
away since nineteen ninety eight on this station and when
I was across town and now the back of it
here we started up again last year with it's so
you know, I want folks to understand it's not hard
to do that. It's really it's as simple as how
(13:17):
I'm spelling it out to you right now. You pick
up your smartphone and you download the iHeartRadio app. So
you just go to your app store or whatever and
then look up ByHeart. It comes there and you download.
It's as simple as that. It's free. It's easy, really
easy to do. Once you download it, then they have
a little search bar like any other one does, you know,
in a little magnifying glass or search bar, and you
(13:39):
enter in there AM thirteen hundred the zone.
Speaker 1 (13:42):
It'll come up. It'll pop right up.
Speaker 2 (13:44):
And when it pops up one way that'll make it
easier for you to listen to us or to participate
in contest is just to make it a preset. You
do that at the top of the phone. Really easy
to do. You just make it a preset. But anyway,
once you search it, you'll see two buttons. One's a
little white trying shape button that's to listen to our
programming and that includes the ball and basketball baseball games
(14:06):
here on the station to link to it. And then
there's another button. That other button is a little red button.
It's got a white microphone in it. You tap that
button and what that does is it activates our talk
back feature and you tap it and then you just
start talking. You can leave us a message up to
thirty seconds if you want, but you don't even need that.
Let you say, yeah, listen to Craig Wait show. He's
(14:27):
giving away the magazine. The answer is blah blah blah.
That's it, and the first two correct answers we get
to the question receive the magazine.
Speaker 1 (14:38):
It's that easy.
Speaker 2 (14:39):
And that's why I say, By the way, if you
make it you preset, you get into the system real
quick that way, so we will give you the question.
It will be Texas Longhorn related and that is coming
up in the three o'clock hour, so stay tuned for that.
Speaker 1 (14:56):
All right. Up next, we're.
Speaker 2 (14:57):
Gonna hear from AJ Millwey, the Longhorn Barn's passing in coordinator,
Assistant coach. We'll do that coming up here on and
by the way, wore up, it's the break. Let's just
say you're interested in texting the show. We give you
the opportunity to text us. You text the word Texas
follow by your question or comment to eight one five
(15:18):
three zero. So text the word Texas follow by your
question or comment to eight one five three zero. Standard
messaging and data rates may apply. That's an easy way
to reach us as well, and we'll get to those
texts on this program as well. But up next we
hear from AJ Millweed when we continue on thirteen under
the Zone here on a yacht Rock Wednesday here on
thirteen hundred the zone. A lot to get to on
(15:38):
the program that we do have inconceivable coming up in
a few minutes, we'll hear from Special Teams coordinator and
the tight Ends coach Jeff Banks. In the three o'clock hour.
Dwayne Aquina, the pass defense coordinator. We'll we'll hear from him.
We'll hear from him in the four o'clock hour. But
(15:59):
right now, Owl talking all things arch manning and other
things quarterback related. And I brought this up yesterday because
I thought it was important to point this out, and
I think a lot of folks know this by now.
But it doesn't hurt her, mind you, because occasionally what
(16:24):
happens is when we play sound from Longhorn assistant coaches,
folks say, hey, why don't we hear from that guy more?
Speaker 1 (16:35):
And understand that they are.
Speaker 2 (16:39):
Made available before the season starts, and then during bowl
game week the coordinators do, but the rest are not.
The rest of the time, they're not available during the
course of the seasons. Sark has made it plain and
clear he speaks for the team and for the staff.
Speaker 1 (16:59):
That's thing that.
Speaker 2 (17:04):
That Nick Saban did and Sarks just kind of carried
that over to that. So that's where that is. But
all of the members of the coaching staff were made
available yesterday, and that included obviously Kyle Flood, the co
offensive coordinator handles the offensive line, Pete Wookowski, who of
(17:27):
course handles the defense as a defensive coordinator and works
with the outside linebackers, Kenny Baker who works with the
defensive line, Michael Bimonte who is a co passing game
coordinator and assistant quarterback coach.
Speaker 1 (17:43):
Lal and Clark Edge, Rusher's coach.
Speaker 2 (17:47):
Also Kenotto Hudson who handles the nickelbacks, Chris Jackson who
is passing game coordinator who works with the wide receivers.
Johnny Nansen, co defensive coordinator, works with the linebackers, Mark
Orphy who works with the corners, Chad Scott who works
with the running backs. All these guys were made available.
Also included in that group, aj Milwey, who's assistant coach
(18:13):
and co offensive coordinator, works with the quarterbacks and he's
been with start throughout.
Speaker 1 (18:18):
So it was an actual.
Speaker 2 (18:20):
That in the media availability, you hear a lot of
talk and a lot of response, a lot of questions,
a lot of answers about arch Manning.
Speaker 4 (18:32):
He knows this is his team and so when you
know that, it's a lot more comfortable to you at
that point. So that's been to me the biggest growth
is like him knowing where he is with this team
and his position on this team.
Speaker 5 (18:45):
You know, he was a little uncomfortable getting so much
attention when he wasn't playing a lot.
Speaker 6 (18:49):
Do you see a difference now that, as you mentioned,
he knows he's the starter.
Speaker 1 (18:52):
Well, I think.
Speaker 7 (18:54):
He's been able to see it his whole life.
Speaker 4 (18:56):
Like there's got to be an expectation of that, right,
Like we said all the time in our own like,
you chose to play the position, so you chose to
play quarterback, and you chose play quarterback the University of Texas.
There's a lot of things that there's a lot of
responsibilities that come with that. So you got to get
comfortable in that in those situations and you just have to.
Speaker 7 (19:15):
Grow with that.
Speaker 4 (19:15):
And I think now that he's in that position, he's
grown with it and he excels that. I think he
does a really good job when he is with you guys,
and he gets more and more comfortable the.
Speaker 1 (19:24):
More he does it.
Speaker 8 (19:25):
Which I know a lot of players have trainers and stuff,
and he's had such a long relationship with coach cut Club,
He's got all his family to lean on. He talked
to the Passing Academy about texting Peyton about throwing a
pick and two minute drill.
Speaker 1 (19:36):
And getting voice for my mo back.
Speaker 9 (19:38):
Yeah, how is that does that? How does that help you?
I guess in terms of coaching a guy with it, I.
Speaker 4 (19:43):
Think it's always you know, like when you have those
kind of assets at your disposal, it's just different than
most kids that you you coach, right, like you want
him to take advantage of that, like because it's no
different than Like Colt McCoy was in the building yesterday
and Cole stopped by in the spring like our maybe
our second to last practice, and we were watching two
(20:03):
minute stuff and Colet came into the meeting and I
just had Colt talk to the guys about his experience
in two minute situations in the NFL.
Speaker 7 (20:11):
So, when you have assets.
Speaker 4 (20:13):
Like that at your disposal, why don't you use them?
Because they hear my voice every day, they hear coach
Sark's voice every single day. They hear Mike's voice every
single day.
Speaker 7 (20:21):
But if you have these assets that.
Speaker 4 (20:23):
Have played at the highest level, why wouldn't you use
those things?
Speaker 7 (20:26):
So by all means, go use them.
Speaker 1 (20:29):
Could the expectations.
Speaker 10 (20:31):
Way so heavily on him that.
Speaker 1 (20:33):
He maybe tightened.
Speaker 4 (20:36):
I would be shocked, because he has very high expectations
for himself.
Speaker 7 (20:40):
He wants to play the position at a really high level.
Speaker 4 (20:44):
So if that happened, I would be really really surprised.
Speaker 11 (20:47):
He gives you the confidence that he'll be ready and
bess his preparation.
Speaker 4 (20:53):
He's prepared like he You know, some kids, they come
into these situations where you have to sit and you
don't prepare yourself to be a starting quarterback in that
first year, that second year.
Speaker 7 (21:04):
This kid has not done that.
Speaker 4 (21:06):
This kid has prepared himself like he has been a starter,
whether he started or not, for the last two years.
So he has put himself in a position to be
ready to play that game when that time comes.
Speaker 1 (21:19):
So he was like that day one.
Speaker 4 (21:20):
Yeah, I mean that he's been that way since he's
been recruited. I mean, I have notebooks that I've kept
a as souvenirs for Hey, this is what this kid
did on this unofficial visit when we were having this meeting,
And you have this laundry list of notes that he
took as a seventeen year old kid in high school.
Speaker 7 (21:36):
So that's just his mindset.
Speaker 4 (21:37):
Once again, he's had a pretty good group of people
to show him what it's supposed to look like. I know,
back when Peyton first got to Tennessee. I think coach
Klett had this notebook that Peyton had just filled out,
like so he's seen what it's supposed to look like.
Speaker 12 (21:51):
Coach showed Archers talked about watching film on Josh Allen
and podcast with Worlds.
Speaker 7 (21:58):
Was that his.
Speaker 4 (22:01):
He's always asking what can I watch? What can I
watch more of? So between myself and Mike, we try
to give him. We try to just give him a
little bit of a lead and he takes it and
runs with it. And sometimes he'll ask us, Hey, what
do you think about me watching this guy? Why not
if you can learn from a guy, you know, But
(22:21):
you just want to make sure that he watches the
right things and he's gathering the right information from what
he does watch.
Speaker 5 (22:27):
And why is like.
Speaker 12 (22:28):
Josh Allen versus Tom Brady or a Remailers getting.
Speaker 4 (22:31):
Kind it's a lot closer to his age, you know,
Like Josh Allen, he's the guy, right I mean, he's
one of the top guys right now. So he's watching
that and he's you know, I think he could see
a lot of similarities in his game to Josh as
they have big arms, they throw the deep ball really well.
Speaker 7 (22:47):
But they're both really athletic. So you know, I think when.
Speaker 4 (22:50):
You study people, you want to study people that are
similar to you or that you want to maybe model
your game after. And it's always easier when his guys
are a little bit closer, that are the here and
now as opposed to you know, I don't know how
much of the actual physical game of Tom Brady that
Art really sees himself in.
Speaker 10 (23:09):
Now.
Speaker 7 (23:09):
There's mental mental aspects that we talk about.
Speaker 4 (23:11):
All the time and how you manage the game and
how you play the quarterback position. But Josh Allen's a
heck of a lot more familiar for ours than Tom Brady.
Speaker 7 (23:20):
Probably is different because their skill sets or.
Speaker 4 (23:24):
I think each year, like I know, Coach Shark did
a podcast a couple of years ago, and you know,
he says, we try to reinvent our offense every year,
and we try to do a really good job and
making sure that we take the people that we have
and we put them in the best position to be successful.
So whether that looks a lot like it did last
year or not, we'll see as we get closer to
Game one. Oh yeah, for sure, there's definitely different skill
(23:49):
sets and things like that, and we got to make
sure that we, like we tell our our players all
the time across our program, it's our job to put
them in the best position to be successful. So we
want to make sure that we use the skill set
that they excel at to do that for them.
Speaker 8 (24:03):
It is this race for the for the number two
quarterback in the camp.
Speaker 4 (24:08):
I think it's important because since we've been here, our
starter has not played every has not started every.
Speaker 7 (24:13):
Game since we've been here.
Speaker 4 (24:14):
So that's gonna be a big piece of this fall
camp and kind of finding out who that guy is
gonna be.
Speaker 11 (24:19):
Obviously, March can runs, but I know you don't want
to live, you know, do with red World, So how
do you balance that whole You know, he's got that
ability to run, you also want your quarterbacks to stay
upright for fifteen games?
Speaker 4 (24:33):
Yeah, I mean, I think it's it's on us as
coaches to make sure that we're not putting him in
that situation too many times in a game. Then it's
obviously on him from a coaching standpoint, we have to
coach him really well to understand that it doesn't have
to be Superman runs every time. You know, it's if
it is a run and you can get fifteen and
(24:53):
get down. Let's do that like but we don't have
to take you know, I've used some coachable moments from
last year when he wasn't the starter. You know, the
Mississippi State game comes to mind.
Speaker 7 (25:02):
He had this run.
Speaker 4 (25:03):
He gets up the field and he gets five or
six yards and he could have easily dove. Well, he
takes the Mike linebacker on and takes a sean on
his thrown shold didn't hurt him at that point in time,
but that hit over the course of fifteen sixteen games,
that's going to take a toll.
Speaker 12 (25:18):
First, Arch talks about how during Expression Funds he had
kind of half a film session and half blue Belt session.
Speaker 1 (25:27):
Before they say what do you hey?
Speaker 6 (25:30):
Ever Hember about those meetings ever there and what does
this say?
Speaker 1 (25:33):
And there it is.
Speaker 2 (25:35):
It was there with aj Milwy talking to some arch
manning there all right. Up next, we have Inconceivable here
on a Wednesday afternoon on thirteen under the Zone, second
hour of the program. Here on thirteen under the Zone,
Craig Way alongside of the producer Cameron Parker with you.
Speaker 1 (25:52):
We're with you up until five o'clock this afternoon.
Speaker 2 (25:54):
Coming up in a few minutes, we'll hear from Jeff
Banks long warn special teams coordinator and tight ends coach,
his thoughts on the tight end position and also who
stands out, and the thoughts on the kicking and punting
situation and the return game, very important part obviously of
(26:16):
a team's goals to be successful on the field. Also
coming up in a few minutes will give you an
opportunity to win a copy of Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine.
So we're giving away a couple of copies daily through
the end of next week. That we're doing that, something
we do every year, all right, A couple of things.
(26:39):
First fall, there was what's listed as quote unquote breaking
news if you will. ESPN has cut ties with Pro
Football Hall of Famer and analyst Shannon Sharp. They've done
so less than two weeks after he settled a lawsuit
(27:00):
in which his ex girlfriend accused him of rape. The
Athletic is reporting this. Sharpe has not been on ESPN
since late April, when the lawsuit was first filed. He
sat at the time he would return to ESPN at
the beginning of the NFL training camps, but ESPN did
not comment on that. The woman known as Jane Doe
(27:23):
in the suit, was seeking fifty million dollars for quote,
pain and suffering, psychological and emotional distress, man languish, embarrassment,
humiliation end quote. Sharp publicly denied the allegations immediately after
his accuser filed the suit in April. He called the
case a shakedown attempt. He has maintained that he and
(27:45):
the woman, who is from Nevada, were in a consensual
sexual relationship. Since he retired from the NFL, he's had
a long media career, first as an NFL studio analyst
and as a sports talks host at FS one.
Speaker 1 (28:01):
That's where he had the.
Speaker 2 (28:02):
Big Debate show, which Skip Bayless on Undisputed that run
ended two years ago. Then he joined First Take as
a twice weekly counter to Stephen A.
Speaker 1 (28:11):
Smith. He does continue to have.
Speaker 2 (28:14):
His podcast Club Shaysha and also Nightcap. He teams up
with Chad o Chosinco, the former Wide Receiver and former
Chad Johnson, both of whom are currently Both podcasts are
currently distributed by the Volume in an agreement that concludes
(28:34):
at the end of August. According to sources brief on
the deal before the suit became public. In April, Sharp
was closing in on a major podcast deal that may
have been worth as much as one hundred million dollars,
as Front Office Sports report at the time. The woman's
attorney announced lawsuits dismissal in a post on X a
(28:55):
week ago a little over week ago, but did not
specify the details of the settlement. Tony Busby is the attorney,
and his quote was, after protracted and respectful negotiations, I'm
pleased to announce that we have reached a mutually agreed
upon resolution. All matters have now been addressed satisfactorily, and
(29:17):
the matter has closed. The lawsuit will thus be dismissed
with prejudice, which of course means he can't she can't
refile the same claim against him in the same Las
Vegas court, and no criminal charges wherever filed against Sharp.
Speaker 1 (29:31):
But there it is. That's that's done, and ESPN.
Speaker 2 (29:37):
Apparently has parted ways with Shannon Charms, so we'll see
where it goes from there in terms of, uh, you know,
whether he has.
Speaker 1 (29:48):
You know, whether that.
Speaker 2 (29:48):
Affects his podcasting or where he may turn up. Okay,
here's the question I have for you, Cameron Parker. Have
you read the story and more importantly, have you said
the recent story on and more importantly, have you seen
the recent photos of Luka Doncic?
Speaker 7 (30:09):
I have?
Speaker 1 (30:10):
What do you think the photoshop photos? Oh? You think
they're photoshopped? Oh?
Speaker 3 (30:15):
Come on, anytime anyone's on any magazine cover on men's
health health. Yeah, there's some editing going on. I'm sure
he's lost weight. But I think if you put me
on the if I was in the photo shoot for
Men's Health, I would come out looking like Chris Hemsworth,
even though I do not look like Crimson.
Speaker 1 (30:33):
But that's the power of photo editing.
Speaker 3 (30:35):
Nobody is this is an incredible pr run by the
Lakers and Luka Doncic's PR team. Wow, to go ahead
and be like, you know what, Okay, here's the discourse
in Luka Doncic. He's fat, he's lazy, he's a slob,
he can't stay healthy, he doesn't care about winning. That
is the pick the picture that Nico Harrison, the Dallas
(30:55):
Mavericks organization built around Luca and hey, you watched him
after the trade. He was out of shape, who was
not playing defense. He looked, you know, you know, like
he was a sandwich away from being fat, just did
not look like he was in shape. And maybe there
were some injuries that played some part, but you know,
there's always the photos of him out, you know, drinking
(31:17):
a beer, and you know, he's nothing wrong with drinking
a beer, but you know, do you think like guys
like Lebron or Shay or Giannis or in the middle
of the off season or during the season, you know,
out having a couple of pints, probably not Jokic maybe,
but Jokic is He's not human. He's from a different planet.
You know, he's out horse racing and stuff. So the
Lakers and his PR team was like, you know what,
(31:38):
this is going to be the revenge summer of Luca Dodgers.
And I'm sure some of that was Luca, you know,
getting into shape right, And I'm sure the trade maybe
a bit of a wake up call, but definitely a
bit of hey, you know what this team traded me.
You know, the team that I thought I was going
to spend my entire career with. You know what, I'm
pissed off. Now I'm gonna go out. I'm gonna prove
(32:00):
them wrong. And I predicted it. I said in this
program that sending Luca to La with Lebron who's forty
years old, with his wine and his rehab is the
best thing that could ever happen to Lucas's career. And
guess what, I flipped the switch in this offseason. He's
definitely gone into shed some weight to get back in
basketball shape. And I think a lot of it was
(32:23):
from the Lakers side of it. In lucaspr team, like, hey,
let's go ahead and flip the narrative on Luca, and
they have done that. I think everyone kind of knew
this was going to come this summer, so hey got
to give credit to his team.
Speaker 1 (32:36):
Now, I think that.
Speaker 3 (32:38):
So you don't believe this is a real photo, I
think they definitely did him editing to it. Because it's
any sort of Men's Health or Women's Health or Vogue,
there's always always some sort of touching, editing, touching up
for sure. Now, I definitely think he's lost some weight,
whether it's twenty pounds or thirty. I'm surprised he wasn't
(33:00):
shirtless with a twelve pack. I was figuring it's gonna
be like that. So he's definitely lost some weight. But
tell you what, this is all a fantastic PR scheme
devised either by his PR team, the Lakers, and not
surprised at all they've gone and do this.
Speaker 1 (33:15):
It's it's gonna be.
Speaker 3 (33:16):
It's gonna build up the entire summer and this whole
off season is going to be Lucas for fans tour
against the Dallas Mavericks.
Speaker 1 (33:21):
I'm telling you, you're such a skeptic on this. Did
you hear how he dropped the weight? By the way
I read this, hose and drinking a pint of beer
every day?
Speaker 2 (33:30):
Not only that it's a basketball player, he should be
in great shait, not eating anything for sixteen hours a day,
doing a little fasting. Yeah, his meal intake happened in
an one eight hour window, if it's between between workouts,
It's actually true.
Speaker 1 (33:48):
That was That was the piece I read from the
New York Times.
Speaker 2 (33:51):
Yesterday, that that he that he did it in a
in an eight hour window, and that the other sixteen
hours a day no food intake, which is kind of
interesting because I've never heard of someone trying to get
in shape by limiting not only the story consumption, but
doing it within a time window. I think you never
(34:14):
heard of InterMute fasting before well interminute fasting. But I
always thought that was like days that you did it,
you can. So Derrick Henry did this, I think it
was last year during the off season and it was
NFL Network like posted it and became a huge deal
about like his because he does the same thing during
the off season. He fast now during the regular season
and stuff. When he's playing, he's like, no, no, no, I
(34:35):
have to eat. I got to get my calories, and
the same thing for Luca. But during the off season
when you're trying to shed that extra body fat. I
think we see it, and probably a lot of athletes
do it.
Speaker 3 (34:44):
They just don't they aren't interviewed by Men's Health and
have a photo cover on the main cover.
Speaker 1 (34:48):
But yeah, it makes sense.
Speaker 3 (34:50):
And I mean, hey, on Twitter, you go on you
see the pictures of Luca in the Lakers uniform. It
was like, yeah, he doesn't he doesn't look like he's
in basketball shape to where he's at now. So and hey,
I'm not saying he's faking the weight loss, because he's
definitely lost some weight. I just am not surprised that
it's turned into a whole, you know, media tour that
(35:12):
Lucas team is putting on this somewhere too, and you
know what they're doing this. Hey, hey, Nico Harrison, you
want to you want to free copy of Men's Health.
I bet Nicol Harrison all of a sudden has a
year long subscription the Men's Health for no reason out
of nowhere, because it came from Lucas pr team.
Speaker 2 (35:25):
Okay, okay, Well, and Nico's got other important things to
deal with right now, mister Flag and the Mavericks trying
to go to the other reason why I bring this up.
I first became aware that this was going on, not
from this, not from seeing a photo of him on
Men's Health, not from a piece in the New York Times.
Speaker 1 (35:47):
That I was reading.
Speaker 2 (35:49):
But and what got them interested in doing the piece?
Did you see the other day when he was hanging
out with Aaron Judge.
Speaker 3 (35:58):
When he went on then went I know, he went
on the New York's New York Yankees broadcast. He did,
and he was on the field. He was on this
Regis and Kelly still have a TV show? Was he
on Regis and Kelly in the view that promoting his
weight loss?
Speaker 1 (36:11):
Regis is no longer with us? Okay, okay, so who
replaced him? They did several people, including Jeff Gordon. Oh,
let's coach.
Speaker 2 (36:19):
Yeah, yeah, he did it. Yeah, he did it for
a while. Now it I think it's Kelly and her husband,
isn't it.
Speaker 1 (36:25):
Don't they did it?
Speaker 2 (36:25):
Or or what's his name? Oh you know, uh, it'll
it'll come to.
Speaker 1 (36:32):
Me, mars. Yeah, well that's her husband.
Speaker 3 (36:35):
Okay, so now it's Brian Seacrest and yeah yeah.
Speaker 2 (36:39):
So anyway, no, he was on the field. Apparently Marketsallis
has another wife. Oh that's tough right now. Yeah, leg
according to people dot com, okay, he makes that work. Anyway,
they had a jersey for Luca. It was the number
seventy seven jersey with Doncic on the back, complete with
(37:02):
the accents and everything.
Speaker 1 (37:04):
That's cool.
Speaker 2 (37:04):
I think he threw out the first pitch and he
was hanging out with Aaron Judge, who's on the injured
list right now. Anyway, so that's where I first saw it,
like on Sports Center or something, and he looked pretty cut.
When I saw him, I was like wow, And then
I read the magazine article and then saw the photo,
which are not believing, So okay, all right, I just
(37:24):
wanted I wanted to get your opinion on that.
Speaker 1 (37:26):
Now I have it up.
Speaker 2 (37:28):
Next, we're gonna hear from Jeff Banks talking Longhorn football
special teams in the tight end position. When we continue
on thirteen under the zone we continue here, I want
to before we go into this, I want to give
away two copies of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. Now
you've heard me say this before. Back in the day,
(37:53):
a lot of times we gave away the magazine in
a lot of different ways. One year, when the immortal
Dave came amibleed himself, came out, came out, we did it.
Bill Schening and I were doing the show together and
we were at a Randalls, that old Randalls. It was
right where thirty fifth and thirty eighth Street split over
there in the seat and hospital district people know where
(38:14):
I'm talking about.
Speaker 1 (38:15):
There was a randals there.
Speaker 2 (38:15):
We sat outside one day after this time of year
when it was brutally hot. That was the first year
we were doing that together, in ninety eight, and so
we've done it that way most of the time. We
did it just by you know whatever. We'll take the
tenth caller, eleventh collor when we move beyond that. Now,
obviously there's people, you know, the text into the program,
things like that, But we want you to use the
(38:36):
talk back feature to win the magazine. So again, you
download the iHeartRadio app, very easy, free and easy there
on your smartphone. You do a search for AM thirteen
on a zone. It pops up and there's a little
red button with a white microphone. You tap that and
you leave us a voice message. It's as simple as that.
And what you need to do is leave us the
(38:57):
message with the answer to this question, how many games
in Texas win last year? Simple as that. Your eyes
just got big? Did it hits you immediately? Camp No,
because we play like eighteen hundred games.
Speaker 3 (39:11):
Now, when I was it was like, hey, you played
twelve times and then maybe a.
Speaker 2 (39:17):
Conference game, then may playoffs. Yeah, playoffs yeah, playoffs. Yeah,
you got that. So, first two correct answers how many
games in Texas win last year? First two correct answers
on the talk back feature on the iHeartRadio app will
win a copy of Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine. All right,
(39:37):
let's hear from long warn special teams coordinator and also
the tight ends coach Jeff Banks.
Speaker 9 (39:44):
Either the kicking game wasn't FDL standers last year. Were
there any shared characteristics like in the counter and kicker
that you wanted in those responts?
Speaker 13 (39:54):
Uh No, I mean, I think we just see areas
of improvement for this season being you know, net punting, field,
percentage of penalties. I think those are the three things
that we really, you know, after diving back into it
and looking and being removed from the game and the
emotion of some of those situations. Hey, look, being a
high level kicker at this not only this institution, but
(40:16):
in high level college football playoffs and then in the
NFL you got to make pressure kicks and unfortunately, where
Bert struggled the most was making those kicks. And so
obviously we've acquired talent at both of those positions and
we hope that will help improve both those areas. I
think it will a lot of maturity by both kids
that are coming in as transfers, and so we're excited
(40:37):
about them. And then the penalty piece is coaching, and
like we pride ourselves on fundamentals and working on individual stuff,
SAR gives us great time to do that. In some
organizations they don't put our head coach believes in it,
and we drill it, and so that was a little
disappointing to see us create so many penalties that we
haven't in the past to take away some big returns.
(40:58):
But those are definitely three areas improvement for this year about.
Speaker 1 (41:02):
High pressure kicks.
Speaker 14 (41:03):
Just curious what about Mason stood out too, because I'm
not suspending the sun belt? Was that?
Speaker 13 (41:07):
Yeah, No, it's really not that. Really, what we look
at is three things, right. Number One, we look at
a guy who's got to proven track record regardless of what.
Speaker 9 (41:17):
School he's at and what environment he's kicking into those.
Speaker 13 (41:20):
Things, meaning he's made and has a high percentage of
made kicks in college football, regardless of the conference. Number Two,
we look at lake talent and the ability to you know,
let's face it, the kicks at Bert was missing for
the most part. We're over forty five yards and so
we knew that was going to be a pressure point
if we kept getting in that situation. Unfortunately, it reared
(41:41):
it suddenly. Yet you know, you can save a lot
of it by just going to touchdown. But unfortunately we
got in those spots and we got to make them,
and that's on us and that's on me as a coach.
But we look at lake talent and the ability to
make kicks longer, you know, between that forty five and
fifty five range, which we knew, you know, we were
gonna we were gonna struggle that consistency because that was
(42:01):
just something that wasn't the strength of Birts. And then third,
we look at a guy that we feel like could
come in and make it at this level, right in
this arena, and.
Speaker 9 (42:11):
Mace has got a great disposition.
Speaker 13 (42:12):
You know, he's just a mature kid, really a man
that has a very good demeanor about him. And you know,
we'll learn more about him as we go through training camp.
We've had a good summer with him, and now him
and Will Stone will both compete, and I think Will's
a lot better than he was a year ago, just
from going through all of this and going through the
(42:35):
end of.
Speaker 9 (42:35):
The season the way he did.
Speaker 13 (42:36):
He stepped up in that Ohio State game and did
a nice job making his pats and kicking off very
well for us. So, you know, we feel great because
we've got two guys that we feel like, you know,
have that leg strength and that leg talent and that
have some experience that can put us in a better
position than we were last year.
Speaker 3 (42:51):
Jeff, who's got you excited to return to punts.
Speaker 1 (42:54):
And to returning kick?
Speaker 7 (42:55):
Well?
Speaker 13 (42:55):
I think like there's three guys right like, Demo, Nibblett
and Trey Wiser will probably be the three guys that
we use to return punts and kicks and in different
you know, different guys have different different strengths there, but
certainly three veteran guys that we trust. And I think
that's the big word, right is trust. I think we
were more of a returner based system the last two
years with Silas and Matt Golden last year.
Speaker 9 (43:15):
And then Worthy in blue.
Speaker 13 (43:17):
I think we're probably will be more of a pressure
pressure unit this year. But I like all three of
those guys. I like their skill set. I think they
all got home run ability. I mean they're all twenty
one five, twenty two GPS type guys, miles an hour,
you know, and and yet again they've been on coverage units,
they've been in the fray, they've been in the mix,
their seasoned veterans, and so now it's just about honing
(43:40):
up those skills the next the next twenty five thirty
days and getting them ready for Live Action.
Speaker 1 (43:44):
Who are gonna be some of the core special teams.
Speaker 6 (43:46):
Guys for you this year?
Speaker 13 (43:47):
Yeah, you know Warren Roverson and Ryan Niblett last year,
We're We're just phenomenal. And I want to say surprises
because we thought they both had a lot of talent
in their individual spots like dB and receiver, running back,
But just for us, they were the glue that really
came together through the middle and the end of the season,
and I thought they played they were dynamic players for us.
Speaker 9 (44:10):
We got a lot of.
Speaker 13 (44:10):
Young dbs that are talented and lbr job as coaches
to bring him along. I mean, you just look across
the board. I mean, Kobe Black had a nice year
last year.
Speaker 9 (44:19):
For us in spots.
Speaker 13 (44:21):
We're expecting big things from him as a veteran coming back.
I know he's not an old player, but he's a
veteran for us because he's in his second year. I
think Xavier phil Sami has done a really good job
last spring. I'm really excited about what he's gonna do
as a core guy. I think you look at young
guys like Little Tin, you know, Bo Barnes, Kate Phillips.
We've got a ton of guys that can just run
that did well in the spring. Now let's see what
(44:43):
they transitioned to in the fall. I like our core,
but I think it's gonna be a very competitive roster
in terms of playing on teams.
Speaker 1 (44:51):
Early.
Speaker 13 (44:52):
We got a unique schedule like we always do in
the preseason with this you know, non conference slate where
we have obviously you know, a really high profile game
game one, and then we have three non conference games
at home after that.
Speaker 9 (45:03):
So that'll give.
Speaker 13 (45:04):
Us an opportunity to find find a lot more about
these guys and who our core will be. But like
I said, Nibblet and Warren Roverson we thought were gonna
be good.
Speaker 9 (45:12):
We didn't know.
Speaker 13 (45:12):
We got through those first four games last year and
we're like, yes, they're gonna be good. So I'm excited
to see who steps up in young young players in
our program.
Speaker 14 (45:20):
Coach, We've had a lot of success in the tight
end room to talk about Richard Saw and Jock injuries
and Bridgie d been here.
Speaker 1 (45:25):
Talk about the other guys in that group.
Speaker 13 (45:27):
Yeah, Well, I think what we were looking for right
was to add one player with a lot of experience
because we lost between JT and Gunner in the last
three years, we've lost like all of our reps at
tight end and so and then one being a really
nice number two last year, and so it's like ninety
eight percent of our reps a tight end are gone
with one at Gunner leaving. So we really were like, Okay,
(45:48):
we need to add one guy. I think I think
all of us have a lot of confidence at Spencer
Shannon and Jordan Washington coming back, and we we have
for different reasons, right, for different reasons with both guys
we feel really good about. But Jordan got hurt early
in spring, and so that kind of that kind of
that kind of forwarded his progress. We bringing them already.
Winston he had a really nice spring. Now we have
(46:10):
Nick Townsend coming in and all of a sudden, it's
like we're a lot more versatile. So like as much
as we lose Gunner, a great player, he had a
phenomenal year last year. Now it's like, wow, we have
all these different body types and like we may be
in a lot of different.
Speaker 9 (46:22):
Personnel groups than twelve personnel a.
Speaker 13 (46:24):
Lot of different ways, you know, because Jack Andres gives
us a proven pass receiver and then he gives us
a physical blocker in the box that's not necessarily the
biggest guy.
Speaker 9 (46:35):
And so that's what we were looking for.
Speaker 13 (46:37):
In the transfer portal, was someone like that that could
mess with our team and and fit our offense. And
when we saw him playing at col he was sliding back,
he was inserting, he was doing a lot of the.
Speaker 9 (46:48):
Things that we do in the run game.
Speaker 13 (46:50):
And then you see him vertically, you know, get past
defenders and you're like, okay, sweet, we get a big
time pass receiver that can block. And so we are
we're really excited about just those all those new players.
Believe it or not, Jack, Amari and Nick, it's gonna
be interesting singing. You know, some of these guys have
have pads on. You don't really know yet till you
get that. I don't want to like put the cart
(47:10):
in front of the horse, but certainly those three guys
can catch the football and they can get vertical, and
I'm excited about kind of how this fall camp will go.
Speaker 3 (47:18):
So you're trying to find uh specific freshmen that utilize
on your special teams.
Speaker 1 (47:22):
You know, what traits or things are you looking at?
Speaker 9 (47:24):
Yeah, great question. Speed.
Speaker 13 (47:26):
If you can flat out run, you're gonna play best teams.
Number two, trust, So are you the guy that's gonna
push away when the returner passes you or are you
gonna keep grabbing the guy holding him and creating that penalty?
Speaker 9 (47:40):
Right?
Speaker 13 (47:41):
And then physicality like can you go down and cover
and tackle? Like some guys are big, they look good,
they can run, but then maybe they're an offensive player
and they're not used to tackling, and so we're trying
to teach them that, right, Like we're trying to continue
to develop those skills in camp. You got to be
able to run, you gotta be able to tackle, and
you got we gotta be able to trust.
Speaker 1 (48:01):
You and they quick fall up.
Speaker 3 (48:02):
But there you mentioned some defensive players that are any
offensive guys that you just said that have shown up already?
Speaker 1 (48:06):
Ability the ability?
Speaker 13 (48:08):
You know, not as many now, but there will be
in training camp. You know, in spring we do a
little bit of a modified version of special teams in
terms of like our schematics, but when we get into
fall camp we put the whole thing in. And so
we have a great group of young receivers, young running
backs obviously Amari Winston and Nick Towns, and I've pointed
out they're gonna be littered on the on the four
course special teams. I mean, guys that are six two
(48:30):
six three two thirty can run are gonna be all
over it like the bow Barnes and some of those
linebackers Douce cutting him.
Speaker 9 (48:36):
So I'm excited about that.
Speaker 13 (48:37):
But offensively, I would say the the young tight ends
right away, and then we have a good group of physical,
big receivers and we'll see what they can do.
Speaker 1 (48:46):
Is more of an hvac typer?
Speaker 6 (48:47):
Is more of an ane?
Speaker 9 (48:48):
That a good question. You know, we haven't had him
in that.
Speaker 13 (48:52):
Setting where he's on the line blocking, you know, Ethan
Berg or Colin Simmons, and so that'll be the evaluation,
right and then how do we best use him off
of that? I don't know that answer. I don't like
using this or the word h back because if you're
an eleven personnel, you're out there, you're the attached tight end.
Speaker 9 (49:11):
There's only one tight end. Does that make sense?
Speaker 13 (49:13):
So I think he's smart enough and I think he's
strong enough, just in looking at what he's done this
summer to be able to be that guy on the line.
I don't know that for a fact until he does it.
Speaker 12 (49:23):
I wonder the injuries by you know what's going through injuries.
Speaker 1 (49:27):
He also had an experience.
Speaker 12 (49:29):
Does Jack allow you to do some things that not
to say a thing back by Mike, but maybe you
couldn't do less of your directional lead.
Speaker 1 (49:35):
And that time.
Speaker 13 (49:35):
Yeah, I don't even it's not necessarily talent or that
Mike was injured. It was that he was a freshman,
and like, you don't want to put no matter what
position is, you don't want to put all this stuff
on a freshman. When we had a really really good
team around him, it was like, let him just do
his job and everyone else can do theirs. With Jack,
he's mature, He's played a lot of football. He started
at UTYPE as an all conference player. Totally different dynamic, right,
(49:57):
like the trust factor immediately just coaching, his ability to
fix things quickly. But that's because he's older, right, I
mean an eighteen year older, a twenty two year old,
a kid that's not played college football and kid's played
for four years.
Speaker 9 (50:07):
Totally different.
Speaker 13 (50:08):
Whether it's a tight end in Jack injuries or it's
Jack Bowmeister or Mason Shipley. Those guys just have experience
and have an experience allows you to adjust adapt and
so putting more on them, yeah, sure, we can put
more on all those guys because they're older. But hey, look,
we just need a guy to punt far high and
directionally sound and will be pretty good.
Speaker 9 (50:28):
We're pretty fast on the perimeter pointing where you have to.
Speaker 8 (50:30):
Kick return game, and we have mainly one guy like
Matt gold Yeah.
Speaker 13 (50:35):
I wasn't disappointed we should have any opportunities. I mean,
we returned about fourteen times. Six were normal kicks to
our returner in the return spot we have a twenty
four yards I mean, it was just almost a non
factor more kirk to be honest, It wasn't like, man,
we're bad.
Speaker 9 (50:50):
And then we had one great return and we.
Speaker 13 (50:52):
Get a holding call on it, which was a we
use a questionable call, but it is what it is,
and the guy grabs him it's holding. But Matt Golden
hits the sixty seven yard to start the Georgia game
and we're off and running, and so that was more disappointing.
So you, hey, look, man, you get one shot, one
kill on these returns, you better make sure you make
them count because obviously the kickers in the SEC, all right,
(51:13):
maybe compared to the big twelve have bigger legs, and
all of a sudden, you're getting touched back city every game.
Speaker 9 (51:18):
So you just number one.
Speaker 13 (51:20):
I think we have to be a little simpler because
it's just you're not getting many ops and we got
to be better at what we do. So when we
get those fourteen opportunities, we don't get to choose what
game it's gonna be and what kick. Like we're at
Ohio State, but you know game one, but we're not indoors,
so it ain't gonna be might not be touched back
every way. Now, all of a sudden, you play in
the wins twelve miles an hour.
Speaker 9 (51:38):
When you wake up, oh great, here we go. We
got returns.
Speaker 7 (51:40):
One guy?
Speaker 1 (51:41):
Everybody else say.
Speaker 9 (51:42):
It again, is one guy?
Speaker 5 (51:43):
Not?
Speaker 13 (51:43):
No, we haven't really evaluated that tightly, but we will
these next fourteen days.
Speaker 9 (51:48):
We'll have a We'll have to say. I just think
the Trey Weisers.
Speaker 13 (51:51):
And DeAndre Moores are experienced, they're fast, they've made plays
in real games already, and hey, look, sometimes as a coach,
when you don't have a proven guy, you're gonna go
with guys you trust and that you know are gonna
get you what's there, because you know if you block
it well, you're gonna get good yards.
Speaker 1 (52:07):
And if the starter would you be worried about overusit.
Speaker 9 (52:10):
Not at all.
Speaker 13 (52:10):
Last year's different. We lost two backs in training camp.
I took all the running backs offs best teams. That
was kind of a judgment decision between Sark and I
because we couldn't afford to lose anyone else.
Speaker 9 (52:18):
Now we got a full array of backs.
Speaker 13 (52:21):
I think, you know, hopefully that stays that way and
we can use trains in situations. I mean, I'm not
gonna use him on all four cores and wear him
out if he's our starting tailbader. I mean, I think
that's the ebb and flow of the coordinator and the
head coach working together.
Speaker 14 (52:33):
When you think about the future recruiting the punting and
kicking position, do you think that's in the portal or
do you think they're still root to develop a freshman
through the process.
Speaker 13 (52:42):
Yeah, I wish I could answer that like totally directly,
but I think it's based off the situation that you're
in each year, and so we were in a unique
situation last year where we felt like we needed to upgrade.
Speaker 9 (52:57):
Although we had old a couple older guys.
Speaker 13 (53:00):
We've already got three committed for next year specialists that
are high school players. There's no doubt you can still
develop players at all these positions. Right If a dB
you're developing doesn't wind up starting and playing and he
feels like you can play somewhere else, he can leave
correct same thing as a punter and a kicker, So.
Speaker 9 (53:19):
It's really no different.
Speaker 13 (53:21):
The only difference is whether you want experience right now
or not. And the key will be where are we at.
We bring these three freshmen in, how do they do?
Are they mid years? How do they do in the spring?
Does that put us in a portal situation to bring
another guy in so they have another year to develop,
which we weren't able to do with Michael Kohn or not.
So each season is going to be different. If a
freshman comes out and he plays really, really well, then
(53:43):
maybe you're never going to the portal and that kid
becomes your guy for three four years. So you'd love
to have it that way, But at the end of
the day, it's about production, and if we're not producing
at those positions, we're.
Speaker 9 (53:52):
Going to go to the portal and try to find.
Speaker 14 (53:54):
Someone they can't, Jeff, who are a few of the
young guys who haven't had a chance yet who you
think could surprise.
Speaker 13 (54:00):
This Little Ten and Townsend, both those two are physically
extremely gifted. Littleton had a phenomenal spring, Nick Townsend's had
a phenomenal summer with Jordan's.
Speaker 12 (54:12):
You know, y'all brought in Jackson to play tie the end.
I know you have an injury thing, but did he take.
Speaker 1 (54:16):
That a certain way was motivating?
Speaker 9 (54:19):
No, they're great. Now, the whole room was great.
Speaker 13 (54:21):
I mean, you know, you gotta be transparent, and so
I think you gotta be honest with your players. And
so we just sat down with all of them together
in the middle of the spring and said, or before spring,
the middle of the winner and said, hey, look, guys,
we're gonna go bring someone in and so there's gonna
be some guys, but I need your help like recruiting.
Speaker 9 (54:36):
Them here too.
Speaker 13 (54:37):
So when they come to visit, they feel that and
these these players are unselfish.
Speaker 9 (54:41):
They want to win. Jordan Washington was great, Spencer was great,
They were all great. They get it.
Speaker 13 (54:46):
I mean, we have zero starts coming back, so they understand.
I'd explained it to him you know, but I think
I also raise the level of competition in that room
as we brought Jack and Jackson. He's done a great
job just kind of meshing into the team right away,
being being very humble and being very unselfish of just
and being kind of cognizant of like I don't need
to be the one all of a sudden in the
(55:07):
beginning first day leading like, let me look and see
the dynamic of the team first, to start to get
to know everybody. And I think he's done a tremendous
job in seven.
Speaker 12 (55:15):
Weeks that he's got his reduct body type of Jack.
Speaker 13 (55:18):
But what is the ring includes Oh yeah, no, he
brings that like he can every down tight end, right,
I mean, like we're asking about Jack playing in line.
I mean Jordan Washington now is two sixties and change.
He can catch, He's got great catch radius. I think
the physicality with pads On in the run game is.
Speaker 9 (55:34):
Gonna be the key for him.
Speaker 13 (55:35):
Just he was two eighteen, he goes to two sixty,
he gets hurt, he has not a big body of
work of blocking.
Speaker 9 (55:42):
Now he comes in a fall camp against some real
d ends.
Speaker 13 (55:44):
I mean, I love the fact we got to go
against the guys we've got to go against, and one
guy didn't mention Lance Jackson is a phenomenal freshman that's
going to play on special teams too. Then I would
be in the little ten Townshend category. But that's what
Jordan brings to the table. I mean, he is a
red zone problem as he gets going because he has
such good catch rateers and he has great hands.
Speaker 3 (56:04):
Going back to recruiting, jack, have you seen the benefits
of not having back to back here to the tight
end being grat.
Speaker 1 (56:09):
Ja seeing that in recruitment?
Speaker 9 (56:11):
I think so.
Speaker 13 (56:11):
I think so, And I think the fact that we
throw the ball to the tight end vertically down the field.
I think that's the big thing, right, like Gunner and
JT having these long catches and making these plays, and
then the maybe the stability of the of the program,
like two freshmen that came in and built themselves up
between JT and Gunner one played three years, one played
four years, and the development piece and so you know,
(56:34):
hopefully we could keep leaning on that to get get
even better recruits in here at tight end in the futures.
Speaker 7 (56:39):
Two last ones for Coach.
Speaker 14 (56:40):
Banks, he got two tops. Okay, kind of a big
picture question. Yes, that's obviously if your roost there. You
guys have been to the semifinals obviously twice. What does
the tape to then get to that next level to
kind of breakthrough?
Speaker 13 (56:53):
Yeah, I mean, I I don't know.
Speaker 9 (56:55):
I think.
Speaker 13 (56:57):
We have a younger team and we got we gotta
catch up quickly. Our urgency has to be at a
high level, and I can't really look that far down
to know how that'll all play out. I just know
we have a very difficult opponent game one, and then
we have a very difficult schedule in the SEC. And
(57:18):
you know, who knows what those teams will be like
when we get there. They're all gonna be good for
different reasons. So I can't really talk on that. I'm
just excited that we can say we've been to two
playoffs in semi finals and that we're headed in that
direction to win a national championship. And other than that,
I can't really talk on that, Jeff.
Speaker 1 (57:36):
Because two thirds of the picking operation it's going to
be different this year. How conchess it have?
Speaker 13 (57:39):
Sam lows that, Yeah, he's great and had a great summer,
and it's very experienced and very player friendly. In terms
of the punter and the kicker, and they've been great
all summer. That whole group's work together and having Lance
back is is key. You know, you don't notice a
snapper until the snap's bad, and he hasn't had one
in three years and we're excited about his senior season.
Speaker 1 (58:01):
That's how you know it should be.
Speaker 13 (58:03):
Yeah, should be he I mean, you're holding right and
left because you got Shipley and you got Will so
that always adds a different dynamic. But I would think
that Jack and he's done a phenomenal job so far,
including the spring, so I would think he will be
the hold.
Speaker 2 (58:15):
They were talking about right there at the tail and
who's going to hold either Bomeister or Jack Henry, you
know who might hold on conversions. But before that, what
I started to say is this is how you know
when you are at the start of fall camp workouts,
when you get to have questions about the deep snapper.
(58:37):
I mean it's not often we talk about Lance Saint Louis,
but he's been the guy for three years and like
Jeff Banks said, he had had a bad snap. You know,
he knocked on wood at the time he did it.
He's a veteran, and so that's good. And with all
the changes they made with punter and kicker and returners
and things like that, it's good to.
Speaker 1 (58:57):
Have that solid. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (58:58):
It's one of those positions where you hope if you
don't talk about it a lot, because if you are
talking about it, that means he's not doing his job right,
be going well if the quarterbacks playing him. Well, there's
always gonna question with the quarterback with the long snapper.
Probably not right right, probably not unless things are going.
Speaker 1 (59:13):
Off the rail exactly. All right.
Speaker 2 (59:15):
We will be back with more coming up here on
thirteen under the Zone our text line because remember we
were talking about Carrie Underwood and being reupt to do
the open and the theme for Sunday Night Football, and
I said that faith Hill did it. I actually said
(59:39):
the words first. She did not do it first, she
did it before her. Our good man CB always on
it said, many don't remember, and I would be counted
in amongst that group. That Pink was the OG Sunday
Night Football singer in two thousand and six. Then faith
Hill took over in two thousand and seven, and he
even tweeted it to us as well, So we would
(01:00:01):
take note of that. So Pink only lasted one year
doing it that bad. I guess they felt they could
do better with faith Hill. I don't know, I don't know.
I know this faith Hill was not in the Billy
Joel documentary, but Pink was.
Speaker 1 (01:00:15):
That's true.
Speaker 3 (01:00:17):
CV actually sent us the uh yeah you said it,
the open right, the open for it? Which see can
you play it? This is Pink two thousand and six.
Speaker 15 (01:00:30):
Yeah, where are you.
Speaker 10 (01:00:35):
Just kicking back from the things that.
Speaker 1 (01:00:37):
Should do the game? Slightly different lyrics? Who was Sean Alexander?
All right? Eli Payton straight hand? Oh man? This Swike
Freeman shna now oh man.
Speaker 3 (01:00:57):
Yeah, it's definitely more of kind of like a.
Speaker 14 (01:01:01):
Rock pop.
Speaker 2 (01:01:02):
It's almost it's it's kind of close to Joan Jets
original from what this theme was fashion I Hate Myself
for Loving You. It kind of sounds almost like hers.
Slightly different, all right, So that's why Faith Hill went a.
Speaker 3 (01:01:19):
Different Yeah, they went a different direct. Let's see what
we got here in faith Hill?
Speaker 1 (01:01:23):
Okay? Im sponsored by Sprint. Wow, alright, I remember that
we have the announcer Boys.
Speaker 9 (01:01:36):
Of the Schools and the Boys of making some noise
that we got for you.
Speaker 1 (01:01:41):
So let's hate.
Speaker 14 (01:01:47):
Night.
Speaker 3 (01:01:47):
Where are you?
Speaker 1 (01:01:51):
Yeah? I like it's a lot better than The Pains
in my opinion.
Speaker 2 (01:01:55):
It's a little clearer, that's a little US music pushing
it and more her voice, yeah doing that, which is
pretty much what Carrie.
Speaker 1 (01:02:07):
Underwood is that.
Speaker 2 (01:02:08):
Yeah, yeah, I'm fine with right, Okay, all right, everyone
want to see a great skit on Saturday Night Live
Watch it when.
Speaker 1 (01:02:19):
What is her name? Uh that that.
Speaker 2 (01:02:22):
That's hosting and they do a takeoff on this as
she's being faith Hill and she it just goes on endlessly,
endlessly and and and uh.
Speaker 1 (01:02:33):
It's just like singing.
Speaker 7 (01:02:34):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:02:34):
Every time they think they're ready for kick off, she
goes into another chorus of it and uh and and
I'm thinking that it was Jason Sadekaz who was who
is like trying to be al Michaels or something. It
was anyway, it was it was pretty funny off of that.
He also pointed out when we were talking about, you know,
the hosts of uh, Kelly Rippa, he said, Ryan Seacrest
(01:03:01):
did it, like we pointed out, he said, he's now
the host to Wheel of Fortune.
Speaker 1 (01:03:04):
That's true. I did see that watch that all the time.
Speaker 2 (01:03:08):
Yeah, Uh somebody asked, what time is the Arkansas kickoff time?
They've not set that yet. It's either gonna be afternoon
or evening. It's in one of two flex windows. It
will not be an eleven am kick I think only
the Vanderbilt games eleven am right now. I think it's
gonna be afternoonery. And then somebody asked the origin and
the names Steely Dan. I have a feeling the person
who texted that nose the answer to that question. You
(01:03:31):
know the answer to that question.
Speaker 1 (01:03:33):
I don't. I don't. Actually Steely Dan was the name.
Speaker 3 (01:03:36):
Uh oh wait, it's it's something to do with like escort, right,
not exactly.
Speaker 2 (01:03:43):
No, No, it was the name of a particular device that.
Speaker 1 (01:03:51):
Women.
Speaker 2 (01:03:52):
Okay, I was the right track, right, kind of sort of,
but it's for women, not for men. Yeah, yeah, at
least the way it was originally designed. Put it that way.
All right. We'll be back to wrap up the hour
on thirteen under the Zone, third and final hour of
the program. Here, I'm thirteen under the Zone Craig Way
alongside the producer Cameron Parker. Glad to have you with
(01:04:13):
us here on this Wednesday afternoon of Yacht Rock. Wednesday afternoon.
We earlier in the program have heard from aj Milwee
works with the quarterbacks with the University of Texas, and
also from Jeff Banks, the special teams coordinator and the
tight ends coach. We heard his detail on both of
(01:04:37):
those areas in the first two hours of the program.
Coming up in a few minutes, we're gonna hear from
Dwayna Kena the Longhorns. As I said once in Future
Assistant Coach. He was there on mac Brown's staff obviously
in the early two thousands, and his coaching acumen, of
course dates back to those desert storm defenses that he
coordinated in at University of Arizona for Dick Tomy back
(01:05:04):
in the day. And a guy like Chris McCallister, who's
an All American outstanding player, and then of course when
he came to Texas, he right out of the gate
had guys like Quinton Jammer and Nathan Vasher and then
Rod Davers in on that, and then you'd have Cedric Griffin,
(01:05:28):
Michael Griffin. Of course, the to Thorpe Award winners Michael
Hoff and Aaron Ross went out to Stanford. Uh and
and uh, we're there. We were joking and you'll hear
it coming up in the conversation. We're joking about the
living situation because he had made the decision not to
(01:05:51):
sell his home in Austin, has held on to it
all these years, and so that's proven to be a
very fortuitous decision on this part. You'll hear me kind
of jokingly ask him about was that the most genius
move he'd ever made was holding on to his home
in Austin. But so we were, you know, we were
talking about that during during that time in his time
(01:06:13):
when he was at Stanford, because it was an interesting
housing arrangement thing that Harball had had out there, Jim
Harball before he went to the NFL, was it the
forty nine ers, and then of course went back to
the college ranks at Michigan, winning a national championship there
and now back in the NFL again with the Los
Angeles Churches. By the way, Cam, we are about twenty
(01:06:40):
seven hours from kickoff from an actual NFL game Hall
of Fame game Chargers and Lions tomorrow night.
Speaker 1 (01:06:49):
That's tomorrow night. It can't gosh.
Speaker 2 (01:06:52):
That might address the second question was because are you
ready for some football?
Speaker 1 (01:06:55):
Are you ready for that game?
Speaker 2 (01:06:57):
Tomorrow night is the whole of the Pro Football Hall
of Fame game. Now we know, we know it's not
the guys you're going to see, at least not a
lot of the guys. Anyway, the vast majority of the
guys that you're going to see play on Sundays for
Dan Campbell and Detroit and Jim Harball in Los Angeles
with the Chargers.
Speaker 1 (01:07:16):
We know that. But it is football.
Speaker 2 (01:07:18):
There is some football, some representative pro football other than
the Canadian probably. By the way, do you see that
highlight play to the guy for the British Columbia Lions made, No,
it's unbelievable. You're gonna have to google it. Let's say, yeah,
interception against the team I root for. Yeah, I have
a team. I have a team in the CIA Football.
I do the Hamilton Tiger Cats. I've been to two
(01:07:42):
Hamilton games. You've been the two games. I've been to
two games. I saw him beat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers
and I saw them beat the Saskatchewan rough Riders. So
that was in back to back here as at eighty
six as it's been a long time, but at the
old stadium, Iver Wins Stadium able to Pro football stadium
seated like twenty nine thousand, kind of reminded me of
(01:08:03):
Vanderbilt Stadium a little bit. They now have a nice
newer facility that they play in, But Hamilton was playing
BC the BC Lions. They're indoors at the BC Place
there in Vancouver. Google it if you haven't seen it.
It's it ended up being i think number one on
Sports Center's Top ten. It's an amazing interception that was
(01:08:28):
made in that ball game deeper in that end zone.
And remember, you know the Canadian Football League in zones
are twenty five yards deep, so you know, and those
goalposters on the front of that. That's also the game
where you actually can pick up what's called a rouge.
You can get one point a single point for a kick.
(01:08:50):
You may try a long field goal and it may
be no good, but if it reaches into the end
zone unreturnable, then you're going to get a point out
of it.
Speaker 1 (01:08:56):
So that's part of the.
Speaker 2 (01:08:57):
CFL rule is in addition to one hundred and ten
yard field and three downs, you know that that kind
of thing, and try to pick up fifteen for a
first down. So there's it's almost kind of like six
man rules some of those on all of those.
Speaker 1 (01:09:11):
So anyway, there there is that.
Speaker 2 (01:09:16):
The The other thing that that we're coming up on
is the Major League Baseball trade deadline.
Speaker 1 (01:09:24):
It's tomorrow afternoon.
Speaker 2 (01:09:26):
I believe that three o'clock our time might be four
o'clock hard time, five Eastern, but it's tomorrow afternoon.
Speaker 1 (01:09:33):
Is the major league trade deadline.
Speaker 2 (01:09:34):
A lot of speculation is who's going to deal, who's
going to make it, you know, try to bolster, including
Cameron's Texas Rangers that barely yeah, that they might be
buyers not sellers, and that the Astros I fall into
the same category. In the American League, we've already seen
(01:09:54):
a deal made yesterday where the Orioles and Blue Jays
did a deal Toronto, sending minor leaguers to Baltimore and
the Orioles swapping reliever Sir Anthony Domingus. The interesting thing
about that trade, I don't know if you saw the
details on that trade camp. It happened while both teams
(01:10:19):
were playing against each other. They had a double header.
First game in the books, Domingus walks from the Orioles
dugout to the Blue Jays dugout. He got traded between
the two games between the two teams between games of
a doubleheader, which by the way, is not the first
time that's happened. That's that's happened. I won't say frequently,
(01:10:43):
but it's happened often enough in Major League Baseball history
to be mentioned and to draw attention because it is
kind of weird that that it does happen that way.
So there's that congratulations to Dusty from Canyon Lake. I
(01:11:08):
hope the lakes. I know that Lake was really, really,
really in bad shape in terms of the drought, and
for all the horrific things that happened with the flooding
on the Guadalpe River. They there was the hope that
maybe some of the downstream that would come from that
or the Lanta River, I guess, would also help replenish
(01:11:32):
Canyon Lake a little bit. I think it's done some,
but not like it's not like what's happened at Lake
Travis and uh and and Buchannan and and even when
they opened up some of the some of the spillway
things that have happened lately, not just when they opened
up some of the gates, the floodgates at some of
(01:11:57):
the Highland Lakes dams, not just but some other ones
that allowed some downstream things to go further into Ladybird
Lake and on down.
Speaker 1 (01:12:10):
From there as well.
Speaker 2 (01:12:13):
But Dusty from Canyon Lake and Roberto Ramirez are winners
of a copy of Dave Camil's Texas Football magazine. We
were giving away two copies every day throughout started last
week we did three and then two copies, and throughout
this week it's two copies, and all of next week
(01:12:36):
we're giving away two copies of the magazine. Like I said,
as we've done every year going back to nineteen ninety eight,
so we'll continue to do that. And they knew the
answer to the question. The question was how many football
games of the Texas long Runs win last year? And
he had to think about it. It wasn't just an
easy automatic. I could see that look on Cameron's face
(01:12:59):
when he was trying of it. Did you actually have
to look it up to see or did it come
to check my work? Ah, So you did guess correctly, No,
I was. I was off by a game. How many
did you think Texas won? I thought Texas went fourteen
and two. I thought it was twelve and four. You
thought they went twelve and four. When they went those
thirteen and three, I miscounted, would you do give them
(01:13:23):
three losses to Georgia one because that's only lost one
game in the regular season, right, yeah, I was Georgia
two Georgia, so that was the only one, and then
the other one Georgia and then of course Ohio State
in the summi finals of the college football playoffs they
went thirteen and three, so they played sixteen games. I
remember last year at this time when they were talking
(01:13:44):
to Sark about it. And by the way, Sark's going
to do a media availability after practice later this afternoon,
and we'll have audio from that for you tomorrow. Because
a lot of it is what we say in the
industry evergreen, because what he's doing is updating you on
the progress of certain guys. And I think that's a
(01:14:06):
good thing. You find out, you know, where's the progress, say,
for example, the backup quarterback position. You know, how's it
looking behind Arch Manning because last year, you know, obviously
it was Quinn Your's team, but people kept asking, sorry,
how's Arch's progress coming. And while that question is going
(01:14:26):
to be asked pretty regularly, that's from a different perspective
now about how he's running and handling the offense and
all those sorts of things. But there will be other
positions that will draw conversation and there will be questions
about those. So with that being the case, he'll have
(01:14:49):
some answers or at least at least updated situations for
some of those questions tomorrow on that. But again, congratulations
to Dusty and Roberto because they won copies of Dave
Campill's Texas Football magazine. They knew the Long Orange won
thirteen games, they went thirteen to three last year, and
we're going to give away two more copies tomorrow. Also,
(01:15:10):
let me tell you what else. We're gonna giving away
a pair of tickets to see Ghost. Remember we looked
up Ghost and I said this is not the movie
the band when you were out one day and Antone
like him, who is not only a residentt smart promotions
dude around here, he's multi talented and he can produce
the show.
Speaker 1 (01:15:29):
He's also a drummer in the band.
Speaker 2 (01:15:32):
Whisk I asked him, how would you describe the music
of Ghost?
Speaker 1 (01:15:38):
You know how you described it.
Speaker 2 (01:15:41):
It's theatrical medal is the way that Antone described Ghost
theatrical metal.
Speaker 1 (01:15:50):
That is the way he described it. He said, it's
very very high production in terms of that.
Speaker 2 (01:15:56):
Anyway, Ghost is going to be at Moody Center on
August fourteenth, and so that's coming up, what two weeks
from tomorrow. So if you want to be in the
drawing to try to win a pair of tickets for that,
here's what you do, same thing that we're doing for
the giveaway for the copies of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
(01:16:20):
You download the iHeartRadio app. You search AM thirteen under
the zone.
Speaker 1 (01:16:25):
It comes up.
Speaker 2 (01:16:26):
If you haven't already downloaded the app, do so, it's free,
it's easy. Then you do the search on AM thirteen
under zone pops right up. And then I would suggest
you go ahead and make it a preset because at
the top of you front, because that makes it even
easier to get into the contesting. Just make it a
preset and you pop that boom.
Speaker 1 (01:16:43):
You're off and running.
Speaker 2 (01:16:44):
Anyway, there's a little red button with a white microphone.
You tap that button and then you leave us a
message with the keyword that you heard on the radio.
Today's keyword is stand stand, like take a stand stand
And so that's today's keyword to give away a pair
(01:17:04):
of tickets to see Ghost. We'll do it again tomorrow
and we will also give away two more copies of
Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine. All right, up next, we'll
visit with Dwayne Aquina. You'll hear from him Long Worn's
assistant coach when we continue on the yacht Rock Winds
see on thirteen hunder the Zone. Let's roll it back
as we continue on the yacht Rock Wednesday. Speaking of throwbacks,
(01:17:27):
the guy we got a chance to visit with yesterday,
like I said, had been on the Texas coaching staff.
They went to Stanford and on Arizona. Now back with
the long Worns. Here's that media session with Dwayne A Keena.
So how different is everything now?
Speaker 6 (01:17:45):
Well, I would say the building.
Speaker 10 (01:17:46):
You know, first of all, I was dropping bread crumbs
to find way way back to my office there for
about a week and a half. But I see everything
now very much the same. I think Sark has done
a great job in turn terms of the messaging, because
you know, the first time I really talked to him
was when we first talked about coming back. But I've
(01:18:08):
always had tremendous respect for him as a football coach
because we had lined up against each other.
Speaker 6 (01:18:13):
But I think the culture in the building is very.
Speaker 10 (01:18:16):
Much similar, you know. I mean you see the messaging
on the walls. It's about unselfishness, It's about doing your
job and all the things that I think will help
you win national championships and what I'm just trying to
do because we've been there and had a level of success,
and I just see us working back into where we
(01:18:38):
were when we had a going here, and I'm excited.
I've always wanted to play in the Southeast Conference. I've
always wanted to get back on this big stage again
where you know you can have an opportunity if we
all do our job, coaches, players do our job, to
have an opportunity to line up and win a national champion.
Speaker 2 (01:19:00):
Was the most genius move in your coaching career. Keeping
your house at.
Speaker 10 (01:19:04):
All, I would say that would be out there, there
is no doubt, you know. And then maybe moving out
of that I was getting where we were getting the
California state tax along with the property taxes, so now
just getting rid.
Speaker 1 (01:19:18):
Of one of that dollar would be there.
Speaker 4 (01:19:23):
You basically created DBU when you were here and I
don't know, the young guys are so young.
Speaker 1 (01:19:29):
Do they appreciate that.
Speaker 9 (01:19:31):
Do you kind of bring back that history to them?
Speaker 6 (01:19:33):
Well, we're merging that.
Speaker 10 (01:19:36):
I'm going to have a philosophy discussion today because I
think one of the uniqueness about the University of Texas
is the tradition, the football tradition, which kind of drove
me when I came here. So my first meeting when
I got here with the Jammers and the Vashers and
the Babers and the young halfs Griffins was back in
(01:19:59):
the seventies when I first started coaching.
Speaker 6 (01:20:01):
You know, there was tailback you at SC.
Speaker 10 (01:20:04):
There was linebacker you at Penn State, but that was
really it, right. But as I was coming up, Texas
defensive backs were the benchmark that Johnny Johnson's, the Gray Clayborns,
the Massy Cages, the sheriff Jerry Jerry Gray's, you know,
so all of those guys. Because I think David McWilliams
(01:20:24):
did a great job of playing press man coverage. You know,
back in the day, it was everybody run to the spot,
cover three. They were kind of the standard and that's
what I bought in as a young coach at.
Speaker 6 (01:20:35):
The University of Hawaii.
Speaker 10 (01:20:37):
I referenced those guys in my first meeting with the
Jammers and all that that Texas football has such a
rich tradition, but I'm not sure they understood that Jerry
Grays and all of that of the seventies, you know,
and then Bill Bradley's and those guys, And that was
my first visit with them that we were going to
(01:20:59):
bring that back.
Speaker 6 (01:21:00):
And I appreciated the fact that Jammer brought.
Speaker 10 (01:21:02):
Into it because new coach, she was already well decorated,
and so the best player in the room bought into it.
Speaker 6 (01:21:09):
And you know, allowed me to coach him hard.
Speaker 10 (01:21:12):
I've visited that with these guys that I would like
to bring that back, not to slight Brandon Jones or
to Shaun Elliott or Chris boyd.
Speaker 1 (01:21:22):
Y you know, and and TJ.
Speaker 9 (01:21:23):
Lock w We're in.
Speaker 6 (01:21:24):
There now, but there's been you know, we are staff.
Speaker 10 (01:21:28):
We have some good years in the draft, right and
I think Bakula and today have brought that back. I
think Gideon and coach Joseph had done a nice job
of bringing that back.
Speaker 6 (01:21:39):
So we're gonna blend and.
Speaker 10 (01:21:42):
Maybe s cause you guys know, I had gold Reels
and all these guys, I've kept them all and Andre was
just in the room.
Speaker 6 (01:21:49):
And how we developed that culture in the dB room
because it was unique. As you guys saw the.
Speaker 10 (01:21:56):
dB room when we left, a little disappointing when they
tore that down, because that was a beautiful room. Was
it important for alumni like Kuandre, like Grufly to come
back years?
Speaker 6 (01:22:09):
I mean, especially Mike, you know, many years after he's
done playing.
Speaker 1 (01:22:13):
Still a fixture of building.
Speaker 10 (01:22:15):
Well, I think all those guys like Jammer came back
for the first time, they said in a number of years,
because all those guys are living these guys dream But
not only for like saying Michael hoff or Michael Griffin, Quandre.
Speaker 6 (01:22:31):
Not only did they produce on the field, but they
were great teammates.
Speaker 10 (01:22:34):
They were unselfish, They graduated, they stayed off less, you know,
all the things that as a coach, you know, if
you really care about your players, it's more than just
the exes and ols. There's going to be times that
you may have to change in attitude about a thing.
You know, maybe it's it's getting your treatment, maybe it's
(01:22:55):
about being more diligent about graduating. Because the facts everybody
glorifies the facts that I've had over fifty players that
have made NFL football teams, but there have been hundreds
that have sat in those rooms that did not. So
the degree I've gone to the NFL as your backup
plan not to kill a dream, but to emphasize the fact.
Speaker 7 (01:23:19):
You need to walk out of here with a degree.
Speaker 10 (01:23:22):
Okay, and even in today's world, with how the salary
structures are, I ask everybody, give me a corner that's
retired this year.
Speaker 6 (01:23:34):
Okay, there are not because you don't get those ten
year deals anymore.
Speaker 10 (01:23:39):
If you're not producing after three years, three games, we'll
get a rookie to come in here. It's too expensive.
So now you're talking about thirty two teams. As a corner, there's.
Speaker 9 (01:23:48):
Four, there's four positions.
Speaker 10 (01:23:50):
So there's one hundred and twenty eight jobs in the
world and there are zero open.
Speaker 6 (01:23:57):
You talk about the safeties, you get five.
Speaker 10 (01:23:59):
On a two teams one hundred and sixty is that right?
Speaker 1 (01:24:04):
Zero openings?
Speaker 6 (01:24:05):
So the degree to me is even bigger.
Speaker 1 (01:24:07):
And that's what the great.
Speaker 6 (01:24:10):
City of Boston selves.
Speaker 10 (01:24:11):
There's so many opportunities internships through the brand is being built.
Speaker 6 (01:24:15):
So you know, for us, we got to talk about
more than just x's.
Speaker 10 (01:24:19):
And o's and you know, and for there, much like
with Huff and now I think Michael and a Ross
will tell you we went through through some growing pains
to get them tougher, you know, but they got a
chance to live their dream.
Speaker 2 (01:24:31):
Is that an elevated source also of pride? And for
what you imparts of these guys, that guys like Huff
and Ross and obviously what jad A did and what
Taff has done up to this point to be able
to achieve at that highest of high level.
Speaker 6 (01:24:48):
Well, and that's my play to these guys.
Speaker 10 (01:24:50):
They started some day, as you said, reversentive DBU Taff
and because he's the senior and who else is our
job now coach and player to continue that tradition to
start punching out first rounders, punch out another prop award
winner and.
Speaker 6 (01:25:08):
And the standards where the coach is high.
Speaker 10 (01:25:10):
The standard in that room has been very high over
the years, you know, and that's that's what we were
going to bring back the culture of the DVOR.
Speaker 1 (01:25:18):
How may Thorpe board winners have you identified?
Speaker 10 (01:25:20):
And you're oh, here, I'm not sure, but you know
I've had three and the two lots, in my opinion
were Earl and Christ McCallister.
Speaker 6 (01:25:31):
How they did not win them was beyond me.
Speaker 10 (01:25:34):
And then Chuck Seeso and then Jamra of course, so
I've had seven go to the final three, and I think.
Speaker 6 (01:25:39):
If Justin Reid would have come back, I think he
would have had the inside trackle down too.
Speaker 10 (01:25:44):
So you know, so you got to you gotta have
athletic ability. But above that, all those guys were wired
the same way, very competitive and would take hard coaching
to get developed in all those things.
Speaker 16 (01:25:57):
So right when you look at that and those, some
of the guys to stand out beside the guy like
Michael Tap with good experience.
Speaker 6 (01:26:03):
You know, I think Michael Tapp's doing a nice job.
Speaker 10 (01:26:06):
I think Manny and Joe Money are doing nice jobs.
Speaker 6 (01:26:09):
I'm encouraged with.
Speaker 10 (01:26:13):
Kobe and some of the younger guys, d Will who's
coming off of an injury. You know, I just think
once we get into real football and start game playing,
I'll have a better feel for all of these guys.
But I'm encouraged with We have a lot of young players,
so we got to figure out how much can we do.
Let's not make them overthink let's just let good athletes
(01:26:34):
go out and play it.
Speaker 6 (01:26:35):
But we've been through.
Speaker 10 (01:26:36):
That with you know, and Griffin and and help for
young players, and we're able to stand up and play it.
But there's enough there for us to be an outstanding defense.
Speaker 7 (01:26:47):
I need a young freshman. Yeah.
Speaker 10 (01:26:50):
I think Ex is doing a nice job, Grayson is
doing a nice job.
Speaker 6 (01:26:56):
I think those ones come right out front. Jomah. I
had a chance to work with him a little bit too. Jonah.
Speaker 10 (01:27:02):
Yeah, he's got a chance too. You got a chance
at baseball also, Yeah, So you know, I think there's
a lot of young players there that will have a chance.
Speaker 6 (01:27:15):
So we start adding more defense. What can they handle?
Speaker 10 (01:27:17):
So it's not it's a little bit more just a
physical aspect of it.
Speaker 6 (01:27:21):
It's it's the metal side of it too.
Speaker 10 (01:27:22):
You think Jonah will make an impact even though he
was away with baseball. Yeah, we just kind of wait
and see, you know, because we missed a lot of
spring ball and all that we were off, so I
haven't really had a task to work with him. But
you know, he's intent in the meetings and that's a
good start.
Speaker 1 (01:27:39):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:27:39):
So talking about Jonah Williams absolutely coming off of that
baseball so we heard yesterday p K mentioned him as well.
Speaker 1 (01:27:46):
So JOHNA.
Speaker 2 (01:27:47):
Williams is keeping his face and his name and his
actions out there quite publicly. We'll shift to the NFL.
We here from Ryan Schotenheimer, coach the Cowboys up next
when we continue on thirteen under the zone. All right
on the got Rockway, Say, let's hear from the head
coach of the Dallas Cowboys. That's Ryan Schottenheimer. This is
a bit of a media gathering. What he had following
(01:28:08):
practice was.
Speaker 16 (01:28:09):
Losing Rob Jones about two or three months effect the
death of defensive line.
Speaker 15 (01:28:15):
Well, first of all, you you you know, you hurt
for Rob. I mean, he's having a great camp and
you know, a terrific young man, and uh so you
hurt for him first. But at the end of the day,
you know he's going to do everything, you know, and
be very diligent through the process to get back. We're
going to give him everything that uh we can do
from a medical standpoint. But again, this is a physical
(01:28:36):
game and it happens. You don't want to see it,
you hate to see it. But again, he's a talented
young player that will bounce back and be as good
as new when he gets back.
Speaker 9 (01:28:47):
Broken bones and neck. It sounds very serious.
Speaker 1 (01:28:50):
How did it occur? Yeah, it was a kickout block.
Speaker 15 (01:28:53):
Uh and uh, just there was a violent collision, one
of those freak things. And again we're pretty fortunate it
wasn't worth it wasn't worse. And you know, it's just
one of those deals about playing the game of football.
And uh, you know it's you hate to see it,
but again, talk to him last night. Uh and uh
you know we're we're with him, we're supporting him. And
like I said, young player with a great career ahead
(01:29:14):
of him.
Speaker 1 (01:29:16):
Clarence Hill d L L S Cowboys.
Speaker 9 (01:29:18):
Can you talk about the depth at guard now with
him out?
Speaker 4 (01:29:21):
Certain?
Speaker 14 (01:29:21):
I don't know if it's a charge option there?
Speaker 1 (01:29:24):
TJ Bass rock up.
Speaker 14 (01:29:25):
And do you talk about those guys?
Speaker 1 (01:29:26):
Yeah?
Speaker 15 (01:29:27):
I think you know, we've got some pieces that we
know we can move around. You moved a lot of those.
You know, Rock Hoffman can play that spot. Sadiek's been
a great addition. Love what he's doing. You'll see him
playing inside some Clarence at guard.
Speaker 1 (01:29:38):
You'll see him playing some jumbo tight end.
Speaker 15 (01:29:40):
You know, we like to get the extra offensive lineman
in the game, something that's been big for us. You know,
maybe you see you know TJ Bass playing some center
some guard awesome. Richards might have to move in there
some But this is the type of this is the
time of year that you want to move those piece
around anyway, So it doesn't really change anything. It just
gives an opportunit for some guys that were maybe a
(01:30:01):
little farther down the depth chart to get more opportunities
in a padded situation going against some top tier defensive talent.
Speaker 1 (01:30:09):
Is how you evaluate the energy and what you've got
and what do you need to prove going today. I
thought it was very physical.
Speaker 15 (01:30:15):
I thought our guys did a nice job understanding what
we call the thud tempo, which is that quick you know,
wrap and release where you're striking with your shoulder. I
thought that was great. I thought the energy was really good.
At the end of the day, we had too many
guys on the ground. That normally happens. These guys have
to learn, it's a process. They learn how to when
you strike, you can't you know, you got to continue
to move your feet. So but all in all, it
(01:30:36):
was good energy, The focus was really good and Uh,
the winning team came down to the bags, so those
pre practice bags, because the offense won the first rack,
the defense won the second team period, the offense won
the third, the defense won the fourth, so we had
to go to the tiebreaker, which is always the bags,
and uh, the offensive coaches had better props, so they won.
Speaker 16 (01:31:00):
Is that keeping track of all that stuff every day?
Is there a running total in the team room?
Speaker 15 (01:31:04):
Yeah, we score practice. You get points for different things.
If it's normal D and D and it's a gain
of four yards or more of the offense gets a point.
If it's less than four yards, the defense gets a point.
If it's a third or fourth down conversion, you know,
the offense gets two points, same thing if the defense
stops them. Three points for a touchdown, three points for
a takeaway. And Tyler Boyles, Uh, my chief of staff
(01:31:27):
does a great job.
Speaker 1 (01:31:28):
Of keeping up with it.
Speaker 15 (01:31:29):
But we're always competing and there's always going to be
a winner and a loser. Defense won the first two
days and offense responded yesterday and they got the victory.
Speaker 16 (01:31:39):
Is that something that you've been coaching for twenty five
thirty years that was always happening or is that something
that's kind of happened in the last team.
Speaker 15 (01:31:47):
That's something I learned from Pete, you know what I mean,
Like I said, the central theme of the programs what
compete every day and you know, you know, the scoring
is kept and it's usually going to be close, and
there's always good give and take, and we have different
ways of you know, deciding who wins if it is
a tie, because sometimes you'll have more than four periods,
you know, so anytime it's an even number periods, you
(01:32:08):
got to go to something. Sometimes it'll be a shootoff,
sometimes it'll be different things. But that was something Pete did.
And again he's a he's a great competitor and and
I think it adds something to practice because they want
to win.
Speaker 1 (01:32:20):
The prom that the coaches, a.
Speaker 15 (01:32:23):
Couple of coaches had on their should they wore shoulder pads.
And then one of our coaches, who's one of the best,
I'm a sucker for props, and so I like props.
And you know, one guy was doing the lebron, so
he was coming through and he was doing the lebron,
you know, and so all.
Speaker 1 (01:32:40):
That stuff gets a value. A defense.
Speaker 15 (01:32:42):
You know, their bags were and they weren't great.
Speaker 1 (01:32:46):
The athletic.
Speaker 5 (01:32:47):
Uh what did you think of that brief period of
time you got to watch Trayvon Diggs yesterday kind of working.
Speaker 1 (01:32:53):
Out for the side. I thought it looked great. You
see him moving around.
Speaker 15 (01:32:56):
I was giving him a hard time because I think
he's lost his ability to catch. Some really concerned that
he won't be able to intercept the ball. But no,
I thought he looked really good. I love to see it.
And uh, again, like I said, all these guys that
are that are rehabbing, man, there, they're competing to get
back and get back as fast as they can.
Speaker 1 (01:33:13):
But I love seeing that.
Speaker 15 (01:33:14):
And that's why I go over and watch and support
because I think it's important, you know, for them to
know that I do care. And you know, I thought
he did a good job. And he's been dialed in.
He's been communicating well and talking to the other guys
and that's what we want.
Speaker 5 (01:33:29):
And then you guys, you blew the horn after the
play at George Dickens, how do you decide and determine
when Brad n.
Speaker 1 (01:33:38):
Oh the last play of practice?
Speaker 15 (01:33:40):
Yeah, yesterday we were on an hour forty five minute
practice and we were right at like an hour and
forty four, so I knew that was going to be
the last play.
Speaker 1 (01:33:47):
Usually its scripted.
Speaker 15 (01:33:49):
That was, you know, a scripted period as well, and
I think there was three or four plays we didn't
get to with the twos.
Speaker 1 (01:33:54):
But we're mindful of the clock, you know.
Speaker 15 (01:33:56):
We we usually stay pretty close to being on schedule,
and we weren't behind, but you know, we lost a
little bit of time, you know, earlier in the practice,
so I just end up cutting two or three.
Speaker 1 (01:34:06):
But yesterday was a cap.
Speaker 15 (01:34:08):
Today I think we're going hour forty five and it's
a two hour cap, so we should be fine.
Speaker 8 (01:34:12):
The Harris Fourars Star Telegram.
Speaker 1 (01:34:14):
Sometimes it's change of scenery you can really do, guys.
Speaker 4 (01:34:16):
A benefit for Kayer at Eland, what do you think
about this setting in this environment has really worked out
for him the.
Speaker 15 (01:34:21):
More ways, he's been the same guy every day since
he's got here, since we signed him.
Speaker 1 (01:34:27):
I'm talking about with the club.
Speaker 15 (01:34:28):
First, he had a really good spring, but again the spring,
you're restricted, so there's certain things you can't do. You
don't have equal right to the ball in the spring.
So now that changes, you're allowed to play the ball live,
we call it and finish through bust the triangle and
stuff like that, as you guys learn your defensive back nomenclature.
But he's been the same guy every day and he's
playing with confidence, and he's one of those guys that
(01:34:50):
he's got elite, elite feet, elite change of direction. But
I see him growing in the mental side of it.
I see him talking and studying splits with David Overstreet
the second and doing those things. And again, change of
scenery helps a lot of people. A lot of people,
you know, they go to a team and it doesn't
work out, then they go somewhere else and for whatever
(01:35:10):
reason it fits. Is it the culture is at the defense?
Is it them going well? Hell, I don't ever want
to be, you know, traded again. And I think some
guys take it personal. I don't think Kyer.
Speaker 1 (01:35:20):
Took it personal.
Speaker 15 (01:35:21):
But I do think he's got a chip on his
shoulder just because he wants to be a great player,
and he's proven that so far over these first couple
of days. But the consistency of it which gets me excited.
Speaker 7 (01:35:34):
We've seen a lot of him.
Speaker 6 (01:35:35):
He's been a good burn if.
Speaker 4 (01:35:36):
You like them.
Speaker 15 (01:35:37):
So yeah, big powerful man used his hands really really well,
He's one of those guys that because of his size
and with and things like that, he's hard to get around.
If the if the speed rushers don't get him off
the jump, it's hard for him because he's so big
and strong, but he can anchor, he can absorb the
bull rush and kind of sit down and stop movement
in the run game. I mean, just a big, powerful
(01:35:59):
man and move people. You know, plays with good low
pad level and gets you know, gets his chin under
the under the face mask and he's able to lift people.
So again, kudos to the scouting department and what they've
done and bringing some of these guys in because he
just two guys you talked about, you know, Kye and
and hakem.
Speaker 1 (01:36:17):
Tommy rs Dalls Cowboys dot Com.
Speaker 14 (01:36:19):
You detailed yesterday what you wanted to see from your running.
Speaker 1 (01:36:22):
Backs and the first day in pads.
Speaker 15 (01:36:23):
Did you get what you wanted out of that group
and who stood out to you? Well, we have a
lot of cold trickles. I learned that we have a
lot of guys that just drove through the smoke. Gavante
had some great runs, Miles had some great runs. You know,
we were running some gap schemes and things like that,
and some you know we call them, you know, double
team plays where you're not pulling people and I mean
they hit it shoulder square, no fair dodging. I thought
(01:36:46):
we popped some nice runs. I thought we did a
really good job in the run game yesterday of moving
moving some people. Uh Jaden had a couple really explosive runs,
which was which was good to see. We got them
on the safety one time. And you know, the guy
Phil MafA, I'm starting to feel him, you know, I'm
starting to feel Phil, you know, like fields the guys
and played football a long time, you know, and so
(01:37:08):
you're starting to feel him and you're seeing the talent
which gets you excited.
Speaker 1 (01:37:10):
And then I will.
Speaker 15 (01:37:11):
Say it again, you guys don't have to write it
down because I know you're tired of hearing about But
Hunter Lefk is an incredible football player.
Speaker 1 (01:37:17):
He really is.
Speaker 15 (01:37:18):
I mean, there's it's amazing. I mean, just his instincts
for the game and what he does and what he
brings and the fact of being able to play three
four positions is incredible to me.
Speaker 1 (01:37:28):
And I can't say enough great things about him.
Speaker 2 (01:37:31):
All right, if I wasn't already now I'm a Brian
Schotteheimer fan. With the Days of Thunder reference there, Cold Trickle,
Driving through the Smoke.
Speaker 1 (01:37:41):
There was a lot about that movie that was whacked.
Speaker 2 (01:37:44):
Out and not realistic about NASCAR, but there were some
things that were pretty cool about it. And I'm getting
a squel Yeah, that's right, all right, We'll be packed
to wrap up today's edition of
Speaker 1 (01:37:54):
The program on thirteen under the Zone
