Speaker 1 (00:02):
We have that it's The craig Way Show with Hall
of Vame broadcast their invoice of the Texas Longhearts Craig
Way drawn closer to the start of the college football season.
You may have heard this or seen it on social media.
I think even a couple of local sportscasts have made
(00:25):
reference to it. This coming Thursday, there is a joint
press conference in Houston between the University of Texas and
Texas A and M that will feature the athletic directors
of both institutions, Trev Alberts, Texas A and M, and
(00:46):
of course Krystal County, vice President, director of Athletics at
the University of Texas. So there's a news conference on Thursday,
and it's in Houston. Also, I've been asked be a
part of it as well as my good friend and
he is my good friend, Andrew Monico, the voice of
(01:06):
the Texas and Am Maggie's and we'll both be there
for that and have a role in the announcement and
things like that that'll be going on on Thursday. As such,
Thursday afternoon show will come your way from Houston, So
(01:27):
we'll be in Houston at the headquarters of our iHeart
Radio Brethren in Houston on Thursday after that press conference,
which is in the morning, so that'll be coming up
on Thursday to be something to look forward to. Obviously,
we're looking forward to the start of this college football
campaign and Texas getting ready and going through more practices
(01:52):
and coming off the scrimmage, the second camp scrimmage. Last hour,
we heard long words head coach Steve Sarcasian discuss the
for this week. They're treating this like a game week,
like a dress rehearsal game week, because next week is
game week leading up the season opener against Colorado State.
(02:12):
So Sark mentioned last hour in the sound we played
your Last Hour that they're treating it like a gag week,
in other words, matching their schedule for practice meetings, workout
things of that nature around projected class schedules even though
(02:36):
class is on campus. If I'm remembering correctly, and correct
me if I'm wrong, practice and now practice classes on
campus at UT start next week. Am I right about that?
I think? So may be wrong, Okay, be wrong. I
was thinking that they start next week. Classes start next week,
and somebody can correct us off. I'm off base on
(02:57):
that because Sark DIDs say they're not in class yet.
August twenty sixth, one week from today. First day of
class okay, next Monday. So that's why this week is
being treated like a game week in terms of working
the totality of the schedule, the practice, the meetings, all
of those things around a what would be a mock
(03:22):
or skeleton class schedule for the student athletes. So they're
doing all of that leading up to in what would
be Saturday afternoon, a two point thirty kickoff in terms
of leading up to that with a practice for a
modified a mock game week as well. They come off
of scrimmage and they practice this morning. And Sark addressed
(03:48):
in a variety items. Again, there's some things with regard
to the running back situation and the wide receivers and
that we aired last hour and you can hear it
on the podcast page for the Craigway Show at AM
thirteen hundred Zone dot com. Some other topics. Sark was
asked about tackling and how would he describe what he's
(04:11):
seen from his players when it comes to tackling in
this fall camp.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
Yeah, no, we tackle a lot, you know. We all
of our team run sessions have been live, you know,
and up until the last kind of half of the
last portion of last week. So we tackle a fair amount.
We work on tackling a ton, you know. I felt
like there was a few opportunities in the scrimmage Saturday
where we got we gave up some leaky yardage on
(04:39):
some tackles that I would have liked us to make
a little bit cleaner. And that that is different for
a backer because a lot of times on like let's
call it a checkdown or running back, maybe his back
is turned and when he turns and faces you up,
it's different than when you're somebody's looking at you from
a distance and you're making that tackle. When his back's turned,
he turns, and we've got to be better bringing our
feet and wrapping up there. But again, that's not uncommon
(05:03):
at this juncture. We just got to continue to work
that aspect of our tackling. But for the most part,
I didn't see just blatant, really poor tackling. I did
see a high level of physicality, especially for some guys
that haven't shown it in a year years past that
are starting to grow into our stylid play.
Speaker 1 (05:20):
You know, here, here's something else to keep in mind
that the coaches have to evaluate and it's a little
bit of a challenge to evaluate. It might be a
little bit more difficult to evaluate tackling when you're doing thud,
meaning guys who might have green jerseys on or you know,
on the offensive side, or quarterbacks. Obviously we're always in
(05:41):
black jerseys, so you're not tackling them. And if you're
doing thud with the running backs to keep running backs healthy.
You know, impact of hit has a lot to do
with the tackling as well. And if you're doing thud,
sometimes you're just having coaches or having to evaluate it.
And they have experiens obviously and doing this, but they
(06:01):
have to value it whether that guy definitely would have
gone down in all probability on the tackle in the
thud drill. You know. Sart also has taken note of
long worns who played for him who are now on
NFL rosters in training camps, things like that, and he
(06:22):
was asked if he discusses how those former long worns
are doing in these NFL preseason games and their efforts
to make teams to the team as they get ready
to the start of their own season.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
I don't have to reference those guys because they know
about it before I do. They're all on you know,
Twitter and social media whatever else, and so it's like
instantaneous when they make a play, it's everywhere. But I'm
really proud of those guys. And you know, I saw
Cooper Cup talking about Jordan Whittington the other day and
just singing his praises for what he's done. And I think,
(06:57):
you know, those guys are all you know, they're byproduct
of our program, and I think that should only instill,
you know, confidence in our current players that what we're
doing is right. And as we're as we're competing and
working to try to go win a championship this fall,
we're also putting them in a really good position to
prepare them to fulfill their dreams of playing in the NFL.
(07:18):
And I think all those guys are living examples of that,
and so hopefully they serve as as good inspiration for
our guys.
Speaker 1 (07:24):
You know who I saw catch a pass over the
weekend was that JT Sanders saw him catch a pass
for the Carolina Panthers. They played on Saturday as well,
and there was some highlights and there he was making
a catch. It's hot he actually led the Panthers and
(07:44):
receiving yards. We do.
Speaker 2 (07:46):
We have the total.
Speaker 1 (07:46):
What was the final total on that twenty two? Okay, okay,
it is my Panther friends and Charlotte it is after
all the NFL preseason. Yeah, feel better, Panther fans. The
Jets leading receiver was twenty five yards. Okay, So there
you go. I have two brothers who live in the Carolinas,
(08:07):
one who lives near Newborn and one who lives just
across the state line near North Myrtle Beach. And while
probably at their core a lot of it, they're Cowboy
fans because of all the time they spent in Texas
when the family moved out here in the late seventies
and early eighties. They since they moved back, they've kind
(08:30):
of adopted the Panthers, much like I did the Hurricanes,
you know, once they got there on NHL franchise. Back
in the state of North Carolina. It's hot out. We
all know that. And Sark was asked how his team
is handling all the heat.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
We're doing pretty good.
Speaker 1 (08:45):
You know.
Speaker 2 (08:45):
I was just talking to Bianco about this walking in
you know, I think our guys have responded really well.
Naturally when you first start training camp. You know, we
went at two thirty the first two days and you
have the double digit cramp guys, right, you're mieteen sixteen,
seventeen eighteen guys with cramps. Well, for the last two weeks,
I haven't had anybody cramp, and so they get acclimated
(09:07):
to it. Again. We're being very mindful of our approach
with that, but I do think it is important to
expose our guys to it, and I would be doing
them a disservice if I never practiced at two thirty
and then trot it out into dk R August thirty
first and expect them to perform at a high level
because the sun is a distraction, just like anything else,
whether it's extreme cold, extreme rain, extreme heat. You know,
(09:31):
we still have to operate. They're not going to cancel
the game. They're not going to move it into the
bubble up top. You know, we're we're gonna have to
play it, and we're gonna have to play a lot
of people. And I think that's why our guys have
practiced the way that they have. You know, we feel
very comfortable with our two d. Sometimes it's hard to
tell the difference and that's great, and our threes are coming,
so we're gonna need all the depth that we've you know,
(09:52):
assembled on this roster early in the season with the.
Speaker 1 (09:55):
Heat the way that is our good stuff there. We're
gonna hear more from Sargnita break when we come back,
a couple of more things talking about roster size and
roster development and another quinn Ewers leadership question. This is
off the charts this year for it, and I really
feel that the media in this town is very astute
(10:16):
about a lot of things, like, for example, we're going
to hear from a question about roster size. I think
they asked some really salient questions, but for whatever reason,
this year is an all time record for asking about
leadership from the quarterback position. We'll hear that as well
and more when we continue here on sports Radio AM
(10:38):
thirteen under the Zone in the iHeartRadio app.
