Speaker 1 (00:14):
Geez, a Texas legend, the Hall of Fame broadcaster, the
voice of the Texas Longhorns, and your host of the
Craigway Show.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
Here he is now Craigway.
Speaker 1 (00:38):
The final game of the twenty twenty five NCAA Softball
season is upon us. The Texas Longhorns and the Texas
Tech Red Raiders have split the first two games of
the best of three championship series here at the Women's
College World Series, and the winner of this takes home
the National Championship Trophy. The loser is the runners up.
(01:00):
Good evening once again from Devon Park in Oklahoma City.
I'm Andrew Haynes to one bitch, one hop down to third.
Mia Scott come in and gloves it and her throw
on the money in plenty of times so Cavon, after
the two out hit batter, is able to come back
to get Johnson and strand the runner on first base
one two bounce her left side. Tony, the shortstop, backs up,
(01:23):
gets the hop, throws the first not in time. Henry
uses her very good speed to beat out the throw.
Once Tony backed up to get a better hop, that
became much more likely that Cayden would reach Kennedy with
the O two change up, Scott grounds it through the
(01:43):
right side of base hit. Right fielder Johnson was playing
in and Johnson almost Dairmail's third base. Woh oh one
wine shot in the left field of base hit, Henry
being sent around third up with it the left fielder Elder.
Her throw hits the third baseman rolls away. Both runners
advance and the Longhorns lead one nothing in the first inning,
(02:04):
second and third and just one out OH two, and
she swings lines it through the right side of base hit.
Scott comes across atwood Hell at third base. It's two
nothing Texas. In the first inning. First pitch here fly
ball left center, Davis on the move looking up. It's
over the fence. Leanne good a three run bomb and
(02:24):
Texas leads five nothing in the first OH two pitch
rounded down to third backhanded by me is Scott across
the line.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
Long throw is in time.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
Mia Scott continues to sparkle at third base, cobbling up
anything hit her way backhanded it down on a knee,
just crossed the foul line with her momentum and her
throat at first to get laying lears. Change up, swinging
(02:58):
a miss and Kennedy down on strikes for out number
two in the second first strikeout of the game for
Cavant series as Atwood ropes it into the gap bright centerfield.
My Davis on the time misses it and it rolls
all the way to the wall. At Wood towards second,
she'll put on the brakes there with a leadoff double.
What oh? Stuart ropes it in the gap right center
(03:21):
field again, that hits the ground, rolling all the way
to the wall, that went around third base. She scores
Stuart in the second six nothing Texas in the third
to two pitch Upstairs grounded out towards short Tony up
at the throat of first. He overthrows the bag and
Bennett is safe. I think she was gonna be safe anyway.
It is an infield hit for the Longhorns Junior first pitch,
(03:44):
there's a line drive in a right center field to
base hit Bennett rounding second, going for third. Maloney in
the second in the slide safe. It's a double and
a school record for Maloney, her ninety third hit of
the year to break Janey Jefferson's twenty twenty two record
four hits in a season and the long Horns have
second and third and no one out, with Caitan Henry
(04:07):
stepping up here in the fourth inning, the long Horns
up six over the Red Raiders one two. Henry reaches
out posts it back to the circle. Risetto offered love.
No one retired. Everyone's safe risetto reaching out for it
was unable to pick it up cleanly, and by the
time she dropped it, she had no chance to get Henry.
(04:34):
So the bases are loaded with no one out for
Mia Scott to two fly Paul center field, pie in
deep a grand slam for Mia Scott. The Long Horns
are piling on ten nothing.
Speaker 2 (04:52):
In the fourth.
Speaker 1 (04:54):
Went run first, two out, go onto the plane, change
up swing and a miss and the leadoff batter reaching on.
The error does not hurt the Longhorns. Here in the
sixth inning, Cavan was the one two bitch shot there
passed Mia Scott in the left fields, and Garcia opens
(05:16):
up the seventh with a base hit Cavan's one two,
then move Listen down the left field line. Stewart over
into powid territory, makes the catch and slams into the sidewall,
bounces off the padding. She's fine out number one. Maya
Davis rolls it up the first base line. Julian Mitchell
comes over, mix it up and throws to No. One
(05:36):
at first base. Luckily, Aston Maloney backing up behind first
base and Davis has a hit plus a throwing error
on Mitchell as Bennett was trying to get over, just
wasn't quite able to get over in time, and Mitchell
just expecting she'd be there. Davis goes around to second
to one line drive left field.
Speaker 3 (05:58):
Here it comes.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
Stewart plays it on a hot rolls in the third
and it's in time. Scott catches the ball and tags
out Davis. We're out number two. One l pitch rounded
to short backhanded by good fires the first Texas wins
the National Championship. It's a dog pile between the circle
(06:25):
and the first baseline. Twenty ninth season in program history,
eighth trip to the Women's College World Series, and for
the third time in the last four years they go
to the Championship Series. This time they get it done.
Speaker 3 (06:41):
Then, indeed they did. They got it done.
Speaker 4 (06:44):
The Texas softball team the twenty twenty five National champions
Good afternoon, everybody, welcome to the program. Here on thirteen
hundred of Zone. My name is Craig Wait. Thanks so
much for joining us. Thanks to Cameron Parker, the regular
producer of this program, for putting the together that National
Championship final game montage for his cam is visiting some
(07:05):
family in North Carolina. We're pleased to have Ronald Savage, Junior,
our producer, here in studio with us today. But the
log Worns win that national title, the long awaited for you.
Heard Andrew Haynes, who had the call obviously of the games,
heard on the iHeartRadio app calling it twenty nine years
(07:26):
it did. It was a building of twenty nine years ago.
And I think back to the first time they got
into the College World Series in their second years of
program nineteen ninety eight, and it was a new and
exciting experience.
Speaker 3 (07:41):
I remember, and I actually called the games.
Speaker 4 (07:44):
They lost there at the Women's College World Series, but
had a great time up there. And then of course
there were other times during the cat Osterman era where
they got closed but couldn't get to the final. And
then they were able to break through under Mike Clark
and get excuse me, under Mike White, and after Connie
Clark had been the head coach and originally it had
(08:05):
them going to Oklahoma City. Mike White came on as
head coach a few years back, got him into the
National Championship round twice, only to be swept both times
by Oklahoma, this time finally getting over the hump.
Speaker 3 (08:20):
It's a great way.
Speaker 4 (08:22):
To conclude the season, and tomorrow on the program, Mike
White will join us one final time for the season
with our look back at this season, the recap of
the National Championship Series against Oklahoma, or excuse me, the
win in the Women's College World Series over Oklahoma, and
then the National Championship Series win over Texas Tech. So
(08:46):
Texas wins its first national championship in softball and a
lot of the team coming back and that's a pretty
cool thing. So we will visit with Mike White on
the program tomorrow. Also tomorrow on the program, Kendall Rogers
from D one Baseball dot Com will join us with
(09:08):
a preview of the Men's College World Series. Because the
College World Series opens in Omaha, Nebraska this week and
there are some eyebrow raising results from not only the
Regionals but the Super Regionals.
Speaker 3 (09:25):
We'll look at the entire field.
Speaker 4 (09:26):
We'll do that coming up today on the program as well,
but we'll get some analysis tomorrow on the program from
Kendall Rogers at D one baseball dot com. Coming up
on the program more of a look back at Texas
sauftball the road to winning the national title. Like I said,
we'll look at the field for the the Men's College
World Series for baseball for Charles Schwab Field in Omaha
(09:51):
will do that. The NBA Finals are now square at
a game apiece Oklahoma City with a pretty resounding victory
last night. I think they won by six team, but
they were really from late first half, even really an
early second quarter on in command of that basketball game
and beating the Indiana Pacers. So that series is tied
(10:14):
at a game apiece as it heads to Indianapolis for
games three and four. The NHL Stanley Cup Finals are
tied at a game of piece in Game three of
that series is tonight down in South Florida. Actually it
would be yeah, down in South Florida, would be in Sunrise, Florida,
with Florida, the Florida Panthers and the Edmonton Oilers tied
(10:37):
at a game apiece. Major League Baseball to look back
af Rangers gonna win. Yesterday the Astros lost, but the
Astros have been hot of late, and we'll take a
look at some of that and college athletics. How vastly
changed is it going to be? With that house settlement
finally happening? Now, we'll run down the particulars of that
(10:58):
and what it might mean to college athletics. As always,
we open up our text line to you for your questions,
your thoughts, your comments. All you have to do is
text the word Texas along with your question or comment
to eight one five three zero. So you text the
word Texas follow by your question or comment to eight
(11:19):
one five three zero. Standard messaging and data rates may apply.
We do have inconceivable later on this hour some pretty
interesting stuff airborne animals and interesting restaurant experience as well,
including one for myself and my wife just last night.
We'll tell you about all of that and more coming up.
(11:41):
Glad to have you with us. It's a Monday, coming
off a pretty interesting weekend, so we'll get to all
of that and more coming up. Well, we continue on
a Monday edition of The Craig Way Show. Here, I'm
thirteen under the zone.
Speaker 3 (11:52):
Yeah, we're glad to have you with us here.
Speaker 4 (11:54):
On a Monday afternoon, coming off of the weekend. Hope
your weekend as well. And then you know I always
say this, do it three times a week. I say
this on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. And that is because
people have different days to start. Some people, believe them
(12:16):
start the work We go on Tuesday or a Thursday,
and not as many as those who start on a Monday,
a Wednesday, or a Friday. And so always say, hey, look,
if Monday is the end of your work week, good
for you, Good on you, and hope hope next two
days are good for you. For many of us who
start that work week on a Monday, hey, ipe, we
grind through it all, okay. And then there's some it's
(12:37):
kind of in the middle of the week to get
done on Wednesday. So whatever your work week is starting
out for you, hope it's going well for you. Here
on a Monday, a warm Monday afternoon, and please to
be with you here on the program.
Speaker 3 (12:51):
All right, As I mentioned, the text line is open.
Speaker 4 (12:55):
All you have to do is text the word Texas
follow by your question or comment to eight one five
to three zero. So you text the word texts followed
by your question or comment to eight one five three zero.
Standard messaging and data rates may apply right out the
Gator Band seapals is what's impressive are the pitchers. The
(13:16):
Texas softball defeated for the top of the country, if
not the top, and Kennedy the number one pitcher twice
absolutely and yeah it was his and I think, listen,
I am not gonna be that guy, and there aren't
I don't think there are too many even died in
(13:38):
wool Longhorn fans. I don't think there are too many
out there who were not giving Nigerie Kennedy or flowers
for the season she had and what she did. And
I don't know of too many who are begrudging her
(14:00):
the money, uh, you know, with with with the n
I L deal, that makes sense, I you know, and
uh and that's a good thing. And I and and
uh you know, I think it's good for women's athletics
as well. And again we're gonna get into this house
settlement thing that will get into more greater to tell
on what money means for collegiate athletes on down the line.
(14:22):
But uh, I think it was it was pointed out
and It's been pointed out by many many and rightly so.
Isa Kennedy uh earned her money and uh I was,
you know, happy uh for uh you know women's athletics
(14:42):
and worked out all well. But I will I will
tell you this, uh you know, if if she's worth
a million dollars, And I've heard other people use this
exact phraseology. I think the latest of her might have
been Babbelo last last night on his his Sports Sunday
program Watch all of the area of sportscasts and sports programming,
(15:05):
so and of course they stay on everything that's on
top of everything that's going on with it. But I
think he said, if she's worth that much, how much
must Hegan Cavan be worth? Because in her five head
to head starting pitcher matchups between those two, Kevan went
(15:26):
five to zero. And not only that, of course, Hegan
had that absolutely fabulous run through the Women's College World
Series thirty one and a third I guess it was
and did not allow an earned run.
Speaker 3 (15:41):
So she was just tremendous throughout that.
Speaker 4 (15:45):
That takes nothing away from what Texas Tech did and
accomplished and advancing to their first Women's College World Series
in the first national Championship Series, and Jerry Glasgow did
a tremendous job as head coach. He deserves a great
deal of credit for what he did. And there were
(16:07):
the players other than Kennedy on that team. It was
not just one person team, but she certainly toted the
mail for them. But they had a great season and
reached the National Championship round and they deserve certainly their
bit of credit for what they did. I was a
(16:27):
little bit thrown off by those and I think this
was probably just the frustration or the disappointment seeping through
in some of the social media exchanges that a lot
of folks had, especially Texas fans and Texas Tech fans,
but there were others who were weighing in Oklahoma fans
(16:47):
and Texas and fans and other.
Speaker 3 (16:49):
Fans, and.
Speaker 4 (16:52):
The position that started to be pushed from some and
it's not I'm sure it's not even the majority, but
some of the Texas Tech fan base was, yeah, we did,
we had a great season. We got to the National
Championship in our first year, and it took you'll what
eight times to win it, nine times to win it.
Speaker 3 (17:16):
All of that's true. What is also true is.
Speaker 4 (17:21):
Texas had been in that national championship round nine times.
Texas Tech had never even advanced to that. So there's
something to be said for getting into the dance, into
the room and the party, and Texas Tech may well
be back there in the future.
Speaker 3 (17:39):
Especially next year with Kennedy having one more year on
the account.
Speaker 4 (17:42):
But I don't think it's the right place to batch
the other school because it took them nine times to
win the title. Dean Smith was one of the greatest
college basketball coaches in the history of the game. For
a long time, he was the record holder on wins.
Now that since was passed first by Bob Knight, and
then I think what Jim behon maybe, and of course
Mike Chewsky the all time leader. He went to seven
(18:04):
final fours before he finally won a national championship. You
got to be playing in it to do it. So
anybody that's like would be critical of Texas. Yeah, you
all got beat in the semifinals two years or I
could even get to the file. Okay, unless you were
in Ohio State or Michigan team, you weren't any better off.
In fact, you were lesser off because you didn't even
(18:25):
reach that. There's something to be said for reaching that round,
and Texas Tech is to be congratulated for they said it,
Hey we got there to the championship round in our
first year. Absolutely, but you can't have it both ways.
You can't be well, it took all forever. You got
to get into the theater before you can win it,
and it did take Texas a while to do it.
(18:45):
But the program has been established. And also Texas was
running up against the dynasty, and make no mistake about it,
it's still a dynasty for Oklahoma right now. We got
halted by what Texas did this year, but a dynasty
doesn't really die off. It gets stopped after a while
and rolls down, but it's still one four in a row.
(19:10):
So that's going to be looked at on its own
merits as a dynasty. Now, what Oklahoma does going forward,
we'll see if it adds to it or not. But
that four year run of four in a row, yeah,
that's one of the top collegiate runs in any sport.
We went over this the other day about the top
(19:31):
college dynasties in terms of team sports, and the number
one of all time was Arkansas men's track and field,
which had a twelve year run is winning indoor indoor
Arkansas's indoor men's track and field team won twelve consecutive
national championships.
Speaker 3 (19:52):
It's pretty dynastic. Now, if you want to get to.
Speaker 4 (19:57):
Know major team sports or teams that use a ball,
or however you want to tournament, you know John Wooden's
seven in a row at UCLA from sixty seven through
seventy three. That stands on its own seven consecutive men's
national titles there, and then you've got Oklahoma winning four
(20:18):
in a row and softball. It stands as quite the achievement. Now,
what does this mean not only for Oklahoma going for
but for the current newly minted, just crowned national champions
at Texas, long or something to build one. They have won.
They're off the schnide, over the hump, whatever phraseology you
(20:38):
care to use. It's done. It's in the books. They
have finally broken through and won a title. Mike White
has finally broken through as a head coach with a
national championship. Remember he took Oregon to the national title
game multiple times, to the National Title Series and they're
as also with Texas running into that Oklahoma dynasty. So
(21:03):
it does mean a lot for what Oklahoma did, and
I think it also values more what Texas did to
halt the run.
Speaker 3 (21:14):
Whether it's the last year.
Speaker 4 (21:16):
Was the last year of this quote unquote dynasty or
dynastic run, or whether the dynasty resumes if Oklahoma wins
next year, however you want to term all that, what
Texas did to achieve that national championship stands on its
own merits.
Speaker 3 (21:33):
It was something else.
Speaker 4 (21:34):
And this really started last fall for this long run
softball team. It started after they were swept by Oklahoma
last year, and then they got together last fall to
talk about it, and it was they had a fall
(21:57):
retreat and they were, you know, kind of chilling and
did some pickleball and then some paddle board and things
like that down by the river. But it was the
senior leaders Vanessa Kiroga, Ashton Maloney, Nia Scott, Katie Simmys,
Sophia Simpson who had gone h and to five against
Oklahoma in the Women's College World Series. They were the
(22:20):
ones who came up with the motto fuel the fire.
They had a PowerPoint presentation and they talked about having
better mental toughness and togetherness and all this and they
needed all of that you think about this, and I'm
definitely gonna ask Mike Wie about it. He brought up
a reference to it. I think at the Victory Valley
(22:42):
on Saturday. You think about this, if you go back
two weeks prior and you look or a week prior,
I guess it would be. I guess it would be
on the calendar of two total weeks by the time
you got there, rid of thirteen days whatever. In that
Super Region against Clemson where they were down a game
(23:04):
to none, the game was tied in the bottom of
the seventh. Clemson was the designated home team and had
runners at second and third with nobody out. All they
needed was a sacrifice fly or a juggled ground ball
enabling the batter to beat the throat a first or
(23:26):
an error or a wild pitch or a pass ball
or anything like that. The season would have ended. Clemson
would have won the game. Texas would have been swept
on its own home field in the Super Regional. It
would have been over. Somehow, they were able to gear
themselves up, and right at the forefront of it was
(23:48):
Cavan and Teagan was able to get strike out and
get a couple of ground balls to get out of
the inning, and that's how close it is. That's how
then the margin is between winning it and coming up
short again disappointed. And then you think about game one
(24:09):
of the Championship Series because they, to be honest, what
Texas did running up to the National Championship Series itself
was incredibly impressive with what they did, including the winner
for Oklahoma. And the story has been well told by
now of Tagan Kavan losing her grandmother who was so
close to her and it was so close to the program,
(24:32):
following every step of that softball program. And on the
day that she passes, Cavan goes out and pitches an
outstanding game in Texas Beach, Oklahoma, and they get over
the hump there. Then they come back and shut out Tennessee.
So they get to the National Championship Series and they
(24:53):
have a call going against them that's been much bally
hooting talked about, the obstruction call, and they're down. And
again that senior leadership or veteran leadership, because Resavoage is
not a senior but veteran and the productivity leader of
the team taking it on her own shoulders. Seeing that
(25:15):
this intentional walk by Kennedy was the ball getting a
little too close to the plate and taking it on
her shoulders, got a little little wink and a nudge
and a nod encouragement from assistant coach Singleton as well
to do it and then whacking that ball through on
the left side to get two runs home and Texas
wins the game. And then they have to dig down
(25:37):
deep again after losing Game two of the Championship series
and credit Texas Tech for clutch hitting and the log
Worns made some mistakes in the field and they were
able to do and Kennedy herself was able to bounce
back from the disappointment of Game one and to perform
as well as she did in Game two and to
get the win forcing that final game where like I said,
(26:00):
you have to give Texas Tech a lot of credit
for what they did in reaching all of that, but
in the final analysis, what Texas did to attack from
the start, it was something that Katie Simmons talked about,
I think in the postgame press conference that they attacked
from the start because they liked the way they finished
the game offensively when they almost call tack down four
to one got into four to three that had the
(26:21):
time run at third but couldn't finish it. But because
they did rally, they said, let's take the momentum from
that and started out early. And that's what they did
obviously with the five run first and then expanding on
that with the Mia Scott Grand Slam. And what else
can you say about Mia Scott with what she did
with the torn acl and everything she did was just
(26:46):
absolutely tremendous, and then and what she did in the
field as well as the plate and then in the
end to be able to make it. It was a
testament to the lessons they applied to themselves going back
last fall with fuel the fire. And that's what makes
that story so complete. Okay, we've got to get to
some other things up next here in the miny afternoon.
(27:08):
We'll do that on thirteen under the Zone.
Speaker 1 (27:09):
Bounded a short backhanded by good fires. The first Texas
wins the National Championship. It's a dog pile between the
circle and the first baseline. Twenty ninth season in program history,
(27:31):
eighth trip to the Women's College World Series, and for
the third time in the last four years, they go
to the Championship Series. This time they get it.
Speaker 4 (27:40):
Done done indeed, and the National champions of Collegiate Saftball
for the first time in school history. We welcome you
back hour number two here on thirteen under the zone
the highlight montage there with a voice of Andrew Haynes,
the voice of Texas Long WRN Softball as a long
Warne one the national title and kudos to to Andrew
(28:04):
one man banned not only calling the national championship but
scurrying down to the field and got all the postgame
interviews with Coach White and Resatwood and Teaking de vaugh
and all those other long warn players Tomorrow on the
program and it'll be in the two o'clock hour, we'll
visit with Mike White, Texas Softball coach. One final rap
(28:25):
and recap of this twenty twenty five national championship run
the Longhorns wrong and get his thoughts on the recap
of it. Like I said, was sharing some thoughts. Randall
text me in and letting me know that, Yeah, you know,
there are a lot of folks who thought that had
the intentional walk by Nigerie Kennedy to resat Wood been
(28:48):
successful and they intentionally walked, Remember there were two outs
in the inning. There are many of you feel that
Tech would have gotten been able to get out of
it and then go on to the win. A Texas
would have had another back since was in the bottom
of the six B. You still had Jolie Mitchell on deck,
you had Steven's come up, so you had you had
(29:08):
other options. So it wasn't necessarily for sure a done
deal that was going to happen. But again, the way
things unfold in a championship certainly is something big. There's
another story I need to tell you before I do that.
I do wanted to offer you an opportunity to win
(29:28):
a pair of tickets to see Cohedon Cambria and then
Coheed and Cambria will be at Moody Center on September ninth.
Speaker 3 (29:36):
This is how you do it.
Speaker 4 (29:38):
You if you haven't already downloaded the iHeartRadio app, it's free.
It's easy to do. You just on your smartphone. You
just download the iHeartRadio app. When you do that, you
search AM thirteen hundred the zone it comes up. Then
there's two buttons there. Once you pull up AM thirteen
hundred zone, there's a white one that's kind of in
(29:59):
the shape of an ap arrow or a triangle that's
to listen to what's going on the air. But there's
another button, and it is a white button right beside it,
and it has a red microphone in the middle, or
it's a red button with a white microphone. Anyway, you
tap that button, that red button, and you leave us
(30:19):
a voice message. That's our talk back feature where you
can leave us a message up to thirty seconds and
you just tell hey, it was listening to Craig Way show.
Heard could possibly be registered for a pair of tickets
to see Coheat and Cambria.
Speaker 3 (30:34):
The keyword that he.
Speaker 4 (30:35):
Mentioned, And that's what you got to do. You gotta
mention the keyword, the keyword easy to remember.
Speaker 1 (30:40):
Good.
Speaker 3 (30:41):
That's it.
Speaker 4 (30:43):
Good as in a good thing for long worn athletics
at Texas Softball want a national title. Good is the keyboard.
And again you do that on the iHeart radio app.
So just wanted to give you that opportunity to Okay,
this was something I wanted to get to an inconceivable
but it didn't time in the story. But I wanted
to mention it because I said earlier I was going
to point it out and had to do with dinner
(31:04):
last night. Is uh, Linda and I my wife and
I went went out to dinner and we went to
a Chinese restaurant and we really liked it, and and
the the food was good, and it was it's been
around a long time, this place, and it had and
it had it was really well appointed and decorated on
(31:27):
the inside and all that other kind of stuff. So
it was nice that the the overall experience was very good.
I do have to tell you though, we're sitting in there,
I think we had just ordered or we were about
to order, and a gentleman walked in and from the
angle that I was sitting, he's kind of facing me
(31:48):
as he walks past, so I only really see the front,
but it looked to me like he had like a
backpack on. And as he walked past me, Linda, who's
sitting across from you, she could see his back as
he's walked away. She said something like, did you see
his backpack or something? I said yeah. She said I
think it it had a pet carrier in it. And
(32:11):
I said, you mean like he said, And she said,
I think there's an animal in there. And I said,
you mean like a dog or a cat. She said maybe.
So the gentleman sits down a couple of boots down
from us. Now my back is to him, so I'm
not seeing this. And then she tells me, yeah, he
had animal in there, and I said what kind. She goes, well,
(32:33):
it's not an animal, it's a bird, and I said
a bird and she said, yeah, it's like a like
a parrot. So I slowly kind of turned around and look,
sure enough, he's got this this bird that I think
it was like a red predominantly red, and some black
on it. And the bird was just kind of sitting
on his shoulder, and the white staff seemed really, you know,
(32:57):
intrigued by it, fascinated by and they were all kind
of looking at and then during the course of the evening,
and again my back to him, so I can't see this,
but Linda's telling me he's feeding it rice. And so
this bird is like sitting on his shoulder eating rice.
And at one point its squawked really loud. It's only wow,
do this thing, So I guess it was needing rice.
(33:19):
So again, things you don't expect to run into in
a restaurant.
Speaker 3 (33:22):
But there was.
Speaker 4 (33:25):
All right, coming up, there's some other things we're gonna
get to college baseball, college World, series field is now set.
Also the what is also set is the settlement, the
House Settlement Bill, and how it might change the financial
not might, almost certainly will change the financial landscape of
(33:46):
collegiate athletics.
Speaker 3 (33:46):
We'll get to that coming up next here on thirteen
under the Zone. If you're doing all right on this Monday.
Speaker 4 (33:53):
Thanks to Ronald Savage, producer outstanding music there on the
bump back speak of the music. By the way, already
a bunch of people asking, you know, because we had
the return of the music Survey last Friday and Cameron
did it, and so our aim and our goal is
to have all of our members of our little group
(34:14):
participate in the music survey. So sometime this summer, Ronald,
you think you would be up for it's eleven questions
and you just and they all start with band or
artists that I hate or love or could listen to
forever and all that.
Speaker 3 (34:29):
Kind of stuff.
Speaker 4 (34:30):
You're up for that, Okay, all right, because I'm probably
gonna ask you to participate, as well as the rest
of our staff and different guests. Among those participating in
the music survey this Friday, another than Roger Wallace, a
broadcast partner in long worn football and baseball, and obviously
as the guy who steps in for me on women's basketball,
(34:52):
on some baseball when I have to be out for
other events or other things like that. So Roger Wallace
Sports Director k X will join us Friday for the
music survey, so we'll do that and and a lot
of people respond on that. Really enjoyed that last Friday,
so it'll be happening again this coming Friday.
Speaker 3 (35:13):
All right, before I get into the house versus NCAA.
Speaker 4 (35:19):
Settlement and the impact on that, impact on that, I
do want to update everybody on what's going on. The
remaining sports that are left to be contested and decided
in this academic and athletic calendar year are track and field,
(35:40):
outdoor track and field going and baseball. Obviously, we know
the University of Texas is no longer playing baseball this season,
they were eliminated at the regional level by UTSA. Track
and field still very much alive. For those of you
wondering about the Director's Cup, where Texas is been in
(36:00):
the lead and closing in on winning the Director's Cup
for best overall athletic program in the nation based on
the points system set up for winning conference championships, postseason
NCAA appearances, things of that nature. Texas with a pretty
healthy lead, and even I believe a modest showing at
(36:26):
the men's and women's NCAA Track and Field Championships coming
up would pretty much lock down another Directorship's all but
pretty much done anyway, but that would seal it. Okay,
Now to baseball, I said the field is set for them.
That's not quite right. There's one spot left. This here's
(36:47):
just the latest example of how different so I might
say odd unusual that this academic year athletic here for
baseball has been in. That's seeing all of the national
seeds that have been knocked out, including Texas the number
(37:08):
two overall national seed, but far from the only one,
and more of that happened of the weekend. But there
is one super regional let to be sighted, that be decided,
And this was the other unusual wrinkle that I was
talking about. Normally, when we get to the super regional
level and there's eight of those, they're all best two
(37:31):
out of three. As you start off at the regionals
with sixteen four team regional double elimination tournaments, sixteen winners
out of that and they go into eight super Regionals,
which are best two out of three. Normally, on going
back and look at over it, every year you'll have
(37:52):
multiple series wind up going to that decisive third game.
This year, only three that have gone to that decisive
I want to make sure I count this right. Louisville, Miami,
Oregon State UCLA. There's four North Carolina A and Arizona,
(38:15):
and Duke Murray State, which is the only one that
hasn't been completed yet, so half of them have done it.
So that's a little bit unusual because quite often you'll
have more than that, But Duke and Murray State is
the one remaining Super Regional to be completed. That was
the best of three that started on Saturday. Duke won
(38:37):
game one handily, Murray State won nineteen to nine yesterday
game two. So they and Murray State, remember was a
four seed in the Oxford Regional where ole Miss was
the number ten overall national seed, and Murray State beat
ole Miss the first night, then beat Western Kentucky, beat
(39:01):
Georgia tack and lost to ole Miss once, and then
beat ole Miss to win it. And so Murray State
and Duke have one more to go that's in Durham
to see who had advances the other ones have been completed.
On the left side of the bracket, you have an
unseated team advancing to Omaha. That's Louisville. Louisville was the
(39:24):
number two seed initially in that regional, host by Vanderbilt,
the number one overall national seed, but Vanderbilt was knocked
out by Right State. They lost the Saturday night getting
the Louisville and then an elimination game on Sunday they
lost to the four seed Right State, and then Right
State lost to Louisville. So Louisville advanced the Super Region,
(39:44):
which they got the host because Miami, an unseated team,
won the region on Hattiesburg, the number sixteen overall seed
Southern Miss. Southern Miss and Miami got to the final
game of that regional, but Miami won it. So Louisville
and miam played. They played, it went all the way
to the end and the final game and Louisville won it.
(40:07):
So Louisville, I think, is in its sixth College World Series,
It's first since twenty nineteen. So the Cardinals are in
and they slot into the slot where the number one
overall seed would be the only top seed on that
side of the bracket. Top eight national seed to survive
(40:29):
was Oregon State, and they won it last night over
Florida State, and they did survivals. They got out there
huge leading, held on they won fourteen to ten. But
originally they had gotten upset on the first night of
their own regional by Saint Mary's came through the losers bracket.
They eliminated TCU, then they beat USC twice to win
that regional. Then they hosted the super Regional in Corvallis,
(40:50):
one game one over Florida State, the number nine seed.
That was one time where the seeds held completely to
form the eight seed against the ninth. Florida State won
game two, Oregon's they won game three, so Louisville will
play Oregon State in Omaha first game. Bottom part of
that left side of the bracket. North Carolina looked great
through other region. They didn't drop one game to Oklahoma,
(41:13):
but then they came back and they kind of pummeled
ou in that final game, and so they got to
host the super regional. They were the number five national
seed and instead of playing the twelve seed Oregon which
got beaten with two and barbecue in its own regional. Arizona,
the two seed there out of the big twelve, won
that Carolina won the first game eighteen to two, and
(41:33):
you thought, well, the Tarrio's are gonna win this, and
they had to lead the second game, but Arizona came
back won that second game ten eight, and then Arizona
came back with a late rally I think they scored
three in the bottom the eighth. They won. So Arizona
unseeded advances and Arizona will take on Coastal Carolina. Now,
(41:53):
this was another one of those super regionals where the
seeds played out Auburn, the number four NWSH seed swept
through and won its region. Coastal Carolina was able to
go through and got extended to a final game beat
East Carolina and they won or won that one on
Sunday night, I guess it was, and they won. So
(42:16):
you had the four seed against the thirteen seed. But
the thirteen seed, Coastal Carolina went to Auburn and won
two straight late late late Friday night game finished I
think almost two o'clock in the morning because they had
a long rain delay in that. But Coastal won the
first game. Then they won the second and Coastal Carolina.
There's no mistaking they're a really good ball club. We've
been talking about them during the course of the year.
(42:36):
Ty Harrington has seen them this year and said they're really,
really good, and they've proven it. Remember Coastal Carolina's former
national champion. They won it all in Omaha in twenty sixteen,
and the team they beat in twenty sixteen, the school
they defeated, is the school they'll face in Omah, Arizona.
So that's the left side of the bracket where you
have two seeded teams, Oregon State number eight national seed
(43:01):
against Louisville, and you have Coastal the thirteen seed playing
an unseated Arizona. Right side of the bracket, UCLA the
fifteen seed advance. They won their own regional, swept through,
had no trouble, beat Fresno State, beat UC Irvine, beat
Arizona State. They won through Or beat Fresno, bt Arizona State,
(43:22):
beat UC Irvine, and they played UTSA, which of course
won the Austin Regional, beat Texas twice, knocked out Kansas State,
Or beat Kansas State on Friday night, and then beat
Texas Saturday night and Sunday night, so they won that regional.
But UCLA did sweep UTSA. They won five to two
on Saturday and then blanked them or maybe they give
(43:45):
up gave up a run and won handily in the
final game. So UCLA won it. Know, they actually shut
them out. They did seven or nothing. I thought, I
remember that. So UCLA is the fifteen seed and they
did advance. They play the winner of this game tonight
between Duke and Murray State. Duke was the number two
(44:07):
seed in the Athens region. Georgia was the number seven
overall national seed, and Georgia the first day won handily
over Binghamton. It was like nineteen to five or whatever.
Duke beat Oklahoma State. Oklahoma State state alive by docking
out Binghamton. Then Duke beat Georgia in the Winter's bracket.
(44:27):
Then Oklahoma State eliminated Georgia on Sunday, and then Duke
beat Oklahoma State to advance. So Duke got to host
the Super Regional and they're hosting it even though they're unseated.
It was a similar situation in Louisville and taking on
this Murray State team unseated a four seed and Duke
and Murray State will play tonight. Six o'clock is the
(44:51):
game tonight, and that will complete the field in the
bottom of the bracket. Late last night, I don't know
if you saw it, LSU ended up sweeping through the
at West Virginia and they were down in the ball
game or they jumped to a six to nothing lead,
had the lead trimmed down the six to four and
then just kind of, you know, kept West Virginian arms length.
(45:11):
They ended up winning the contest twelve five. So LSU,
the number six overall seed, played out and their opponent
also played it out, the three seed Arkansas, which swept
through its regional and Fayetteville then swept the defending national
champions Tennessee, so their reign is National champions is over
(45:34):
Arkansas winning eleven to four yesterday.
Speaker 3 (45:36):
So that is the one.
Speaker 4 (45:39):
Seeded pairing that is held to form Arkansas and LSU.
That's it, the three seed against the six. Everything else
has been changed because of the number of national seeds
who got knocked out, and yes that includes several from
the SEC, but counting it off, the one seed Vanderbilt out,
the two seeds out, the three ls, Arkansas wins the
(46:04):
four Auburn out, the five North Carolina out. The six
seed is LSU they've advanced. The seventh seed Georgia out.
The eight seed is Oregon State they're in. The nine
seed Florida State got knocked out, the ten Ole Miss
got knocked out. The eleven seed was Clemson. They got
(46:25):
knocked out in their own regional. Clemson dim as they were.
Speaker 3 (46:34):
Eliminated.
Speaker 4 (46:35):
That the twelve seed, and by the way, Clemson was
eliminated by West Virginia there and that's how West Virginia
got to that super The twelve was Oregon out, the
thirteen Coastal Carolina made it. The fourteen seed, which was Tennessee,
got knocked out in the super regional by Arkansas. The fifteen,
(46:58):
as we said, made it UCLA, and the sixteen Southern
Miss made up. So five of those national seeds got
knocked out. Those top eight Vanderbilt, Texas, Auburn, North Carolina,
and Georgia five of those top eight national seeds. And
(47:20):
then in the second eight Florida State, Ole Miss, Clemson, Oregon,
Tennessee and Southern Miss six got a So eleven of
the sixteen seeds have it knocked out, so that folks
would tell you is kind of part for the course
for college baseball does happen.
Speaker 3 (47:37):
And for those who said, yeah, I think you know.
Speaker 4 (47:38):
The SEC got thirteen teams in there, and whether they
got left two out of eight twenty five percent and
they go head to head LSU and Arkansas. They have
not yet announced which two games will be on Friday
to open up the College World Series and which two
will be on Saturday. I would say you could probably
take it to the bank that the left side of
(47:59):
the bracket, the one, four, five, eight seeds side of
the bracket, will be Friday, because they're already done Louisville,
Oregon State, Arizona, and Coastal Carolina, and so all of
those were done by Sunday.
Speaker 3 (48:15):
The right side, which as.
Speaker 4 (48:17):
UCLA waiting on the winner of Duke and Murray State
and LSU in Arkansas, I think you can probably count
on that being the Saturday one because they'll probably want
LSU in Arkansas on primetime on Saturday night. That would
be the ESPN way of doing things, now, wouldn't it
all Right? We're gonna get to the NBA Finals coming
up next when we continue on thirteen under the Zone
Monday afternoon here on the program, a couple of pro
(48:40):
sports things before we roll back to the Collegiate Sports World.
NBA Finals. Game two went to the Thunder last night handling.
You just might have heard it the recap on the
iHeart Sports report there. It was certainly Shay Gilgess Alexander's
ball game. He had thirty four points to lead them.
(49:01):
Now important for Game three for the Pacers and the Thunder,
and that's coming up on Wednesday to be a big,
big match up there for Game three of the NBA
Finals between Indiana and Oklahoma City. NHL Stanley Cup Finals
(49:21):
continue tonight, and before I get to that, also want
to congratulate Texas Stars on an outstanding season. Came up short,
lost in Game six last night out in the Pacific
Northwest to Abbotsford. They fell to Abbotsford after falling behind
three to one, and series won a memorable double overtime
Game five on Friday night, but dropped last night. And
(49:45):
Texas Stars great run to the finals the Western Conference
finals of the Colder Cup there in the American Hockey
League and they come up short to Abbotsford in the
conference finals. Stanley Cup Finals Game three is tonight in
South Florida and Florida Panthers Evanson Oilers, the rematch of
(50:05):
last year's Cup final Florida won last year. It's one
game apiece for tomorrow night, so we'll see how that
rolls down. Now, I want to jump back to basketball
and in the collegiate sports. University of Texas made it
official today announced that today the Longhorn men's basketball season
will open on November fourth, and it will open in
(50:32):
Charlotte North Carolina against the Duke Blue Devils. It's quite
a way for Sean Miller to get his coaching you
might say that his reign his coaching experience as the
(50:54):
brand new head basketball coach at the University of Texas.
His tenure begins on November fourth. That's a Tuesday night
in November and Charlotte North Carolina against Duke. And it's
going to be called the Dick Vital Classic. I believe
it's it's it's named for Dick Vital. This this event
(51:16):
is and it was also organized in conjunction with the
fact that Vital just signed a new deal with ESPN.
Of course, he's been a fighting cancer and coming back
from that and uh, the Dick Vital Invitational is how
it's being called. And it'll be Duke in Texas on
November fourth.
Speaker 3 (51:37):
So there you go.
Speaker 4 (51:38):
Quite a challenge there for the first game of the
Sean Miller Era to open up in Charlotte against Duke. Okay,
I wanted to get to this other story because it
was a big story throughout the course of the weekend.
Speaker 3 (51:50):
And no, no, no, some folks may not have the
desire I'll just put it that.
Speaker 4 (51:59):
Way, the desire to try to wrap their minds completely
around the House versus NCAA settlement that was approved on Friday,
And you say, okay, And I know there's a lot
of skepticism as well, because there's a lot of money
(52:19):
involved in it. First of all, just some of the
bare bones stuff. There is going to be an annual
cap that's going to start at twenty and a half
million dollars per school this coming year, and it will
increase every year during this ten year deal. Now, he said, well,
what's the twenty and a half million for that's direct
(52:39):
payments now from universities from their athletic departments, general fund
or whatever, from the university's two student athletes.
Speaker 3 (52:49):
The way it's laid out.
Speaker 4 (52:50):
It's expected to fall that seventy five percent of those
payouts are going to go to football, fifteen percent of basketball,
men's basketball, five percent of women's basketball, and another five
to be spread out amongst the other sports. That's the
way that it's expected to go down. Now, these payments
are additional payments. That's additional money.
Speaker 3 (53:12):
That's not.
Speaker 4 (53:15):
Scholarship, that's not part of a scholarship budget. For those
who didn't know that, those payments are an addition of
scholarships and the other benefits the athletes already receive, and
that INCLUDESIL NIL will continue, however, starting now.
Speaker 3 (53:32):
The clock has started.
Speaker 4 (53:33):
Now the players had to report NIL deals of six
hundred dollars or more to the College Sports Commission. That's
a brand new thing. It's going to have the oversight
of it. And I already saw some light.
Speaker 3 (53:47):
You might see some.
Speaker 4 (53:50):
Tongue in cheek comments and questions from some folks who
looked at, for example, Nijerie Kennedy's deal one million dollar
deal and said, what was to stop them from doing, like,
you know whatever, one hundred different five hundred and ninety
nine dollars deals.
Speaker 3 (54:06):
It's going to be total sum of that going so.
Speaker 4 (54:11):
The way this is going to roll through is right
after this settlement was approved on Friday, Brian Seely, you'll
probably start to hear his name on a more regular basis.
He's a former Major League Baseball executive and he was
named the CEO of a new enforcement organization called the
(54:33):
College Sports Commission. His job will be to lead the
team responsible for the enforcement of these new rules around
revenue sharing, third party payments to players for NIL deals,
and the roster limits. So Heather dinnont troy a piece
on ESPN asking the question that a lot of folks
(54:53):
would say, what happens to the first time the rules
get broken? Then somebody goes outside the boundaries. Jim Phillips
spoke this morning on a Zoom News conference with Greg
sank Commissioner. That course, Jim Phillips is the ACC commissioner
along with Greg Sankei the SEC Commissioner, Tony Pettitia of
the Big Ten, brett Or Mark of the Big twelve,
(55:15):
and Teresa Gould from.
Speaker 3 (55:16):
The PAC twelve.
Speaker 4 (55:16):
Yes, the PAC twelve is alive and kicking, And incidentally,
there are three current slash former PAC twelve teams in
the College World Series. UCLA I know it's in the
Big Ten, he said, but Oregon State is in what's
(55:37):
going to be the reconstituted.
Speaker 3 (55:40):
PAC twelve.
Speaker 4 (55:42):
And of course UCLA had moved on, and USC had
moved on, and Washington had moved on, and Oregon and
of course Arizona and Arizona State left for the Big Twelve.
Arizona and UCLA and Oregon State are all in the
College World Series and they're all current or former PAC
(56:05):
twelve members. Because the PAC twelve is not gone away.
They had two years on this to bring together eight
football playing institutions and the like for basketball. Well, they've
added Boise State, and they've added San Jose State, and
they've added Colorado State. They've added Gonzaga. Of course Gonzaga
doesn't field football. They've added Utah State, They've added Fresno State.
Speaker 3 (56:29):
They will have to add.
Speaker 4 (56:33):
Another football playing institution by twenty six in order to
be eligible.
Speaker 3 (56:38):
To be in the College Football Playoff.
Speaker 4 (56:41):
But Teresa Gould, the commissioner of the PAC twelve, was
on this zoom with Greg Sankee the SEC, Jim Phillips
of the ACC, Tony Pettitia the Big Ten, Brett Ormark
of the Big twelve as well, and they have all
said they have had ideas, but nothing that they were
ready to come forward with. Ultimately, Phillip said the rules
(57:01):
and boundaries will be under the purview of Brian Seeley.
Remember he's the CEO of this new college Sports commission.
One of the quotes from Greg sank was he said
he met with head coaches in football and men's and
women's basketball, and did that back in February, and then
(57:25):
of course they had the spring meetings, and he said
he has asked the same question at every level, including
up to the university presidence.
Speaker 3 (57:35):
And here's the deal.
Speaker 4 (57:37):
His quote was, if you want an unregulated, open system,
just raise your hand and let me know. But universally
the answer was no, we want oversight, we want guardrails,
we want structure.
Speaker 3 (57:51):
He said.
Speaker 4 (57:51):
Those individuals don't have the luxury to just say that
in meeting rooms period. They don't have the luxury to
just be anonymous sources. They have a responsibilitbility to make
what they've sought, what they've asked for to make it work. Now,
the commissioners agreed, though, in order to make it work,
they need congressional help. Sankie has met with President Trump.
(58:13):
He's also met with Notre Dame Athletic Director Pete Bavakua
to continue to stress the need for an effort to
preempt state laws. And this is where it's going to
get sticky, because when you have places like yes, California
being one of those places where unregulated NIL is allowed
and inil even extends to high school athletics in those places,
(58:39):
that doesn't happen in most of the places, including in
the state of Texas. But they're asking for help guardrails
from a federal level, and Philip said college athletics is
in a much better place than it was forty eight
hours before the settlement approved, So we'll see where it
(59:01):
is from that. But we know twenty and a half
million is a cap, but that's separate of NIL deals.
If we're being completely honest. Here is what is said
is that in all probability, that magic number for top
tier athletic programs like the University of Texas or Ohio State, Georgia,
(59:25):
whatever other ones is probably going to be in the
neighborhood of wait for it, one hundred million dollars a
year in terms of making sure student athletes are compensated
that's the totality of all athletes, the five hundred and
something athletes at a given institution.
Speaker 1 (59:47):
One l pits bounded to short back, canted by good fires.
The first Texas wins the national championship, it's a dog
pile between the circle and the first baseline. Twenty ninth
season in program history, eighth trip to the Women's College
(01:00:12):
World Series, and for the third time in the last
four years, they go to the Championship Series. This time
they get it done.
Speaker 4 (01:00:21):
They got it done, work done, as they said, the
job wasn't done. It's done now, mission accomplished. Fire was fueled,
Fuel the fire was the motto of the Texas softball team,
and they win the twenty twenty five College Baseball College
Softball National Championship. Glad to have you with us here
for the final hour of the program. Hey Tomorrow on
(01:00:43):
the program in the two o'clock hour, Mike White, head coach,
will join us one more time to recap the season
and to look ahead for twenty twenty six for Texas softball.
So we will visit with Mike White tomorrow in the
two o'clock hour. The three o'clock hour tomorrow, we'll talk
from College Baseball and preview the men's College World Series
(01:01:03):
from Omaha at Charles Watfield. Kendall Rogers, D one baseball
dot Com will join us tomorrow and that'll be in
the three o'clock hour. Ken'll will be with us to
talk some baseball, all right, Just doing a little cleanup
as I like to do with regard to those who
have texted in on our text line. When I was
(01:01:28):
reading the story about the House versus NCAA settlement where
schools will start paying the student athletes directly a cap
of twenty and a half million dollars a year, twenty million,
five hundred thousand dollars a year, and somebody texted and said,
(01:01:48):
wait a minute, does this mean that I'll receive back
pay for batting two sixty one for Southwest Texas from
nineteen eighty seven eighty eight.
Speaker 3 (01:01:56):
I'm wiing up. Good luck for that. I don't think
that's gonna happen.
Speaker 4 (01:02:01):
You know, it does remind you that when they decided
to bring back in SAA football and what they offered everybody,
I think it was to use their name, image and likeness.
I think they were offering them. I think it was
five hundred bucks and a copy of the game something
like that. So anyway, it's that's that next step that's
(01:02:23):
going to help out there. So the house settlement thing
has been done. Another thing I mentioned this going into
the top of the last hour is that even though
the state champions have all been crowned in high school,
(01:02:44):
at the UIL level, all the state champions have been crowned,
now the academic and athletic school years had a close.
In fact, it's kind of tradition that with baseball being
the final sport being contested, With it being the final
sport being contested, it's you know, it's going on still
(01:03:06):
at the state level while school ends, while the school
year ends, and then baseball ends, and then it's done
for in this case, twenty twenty four slash twenty twenty five.
Now a look to the future. The University Inns classicallye
the UIL's Legislative Council is having meetings coming up with
(01:03:30):
written proposals that have been submitted by the public.
Speaker 3 (01:03:34):
And also policy proposals as well. Here are some of
the written proposals that have been submitted by the public.
Speaker 4 (01:03:47):
Now, now these proposals aren't necessarily endorsed by any body
at the UIL, the Legislative Council. In case you're wondering,
it's not just a small group of people sit in
the building of their on Manor Road. That's not how works.
The Legislative Council is made up from superintendents all across
the state, from a variety of some of the largest
(01:04:08):
high schools in the state to some of the very
smallest as well, and they all get together as a
council and they approve or decline to approve some of
the proposals that come up. And there's several here's an
example what's coming up. These proposals are being considered by
(01:04:30):
the UIL Standing Committee, not presented at the public form.
There's a proposal to add mixed relays at track and field.
There are proposals to add ballet folk lorico as a
UIL sanction activity. Remember, the UNIL is, as the old
saying goes, it's more than just athletics. Athletics is kind
(01:04:52):
of the front door to it all, just as college
athletics is the front door to a university, as is
often said by university presidents. But it's but the ui
L is the governing body of all extracurricular activities, all
of the sanctioned ones anyway, So in addition athletics, it's
(01:05:13):
one act, play, number sense, mariachi, robotics. There's all kinds
of activities not just limited to athletic activities.
Speaker 3 (01:05:28):
So that's why I mentioned the ballet folk lorico. Also
there are.
Speaker 4 (01:05:35):
You know, flag football got added now, proposal to add
boys volleyball has been added. A proposal to add restrictions
to noise makers, a proposal to allow pyrotechnics at UIL
athletic events if supervised by licensed pyrotechnicians. That's like I
say you were a licensed pyrotechnician. And a proposal to
(01:05:58):
allow the use of drones to do a power tether
at football games. So anyway, there's those are the kinds
of things that the Legislative Council considers and they undertake
these proposals at their meetings as well. All right, coming up,
this is US Open Week for golf, the United States
(01:06:19):
Open at Oakmont just outside Pittsburgh. Take a look at
some of the favorites and also who's not going to
be there when we continue on thirteen under the zone.
You've heard me mention that you can text the program
by texting the word text as followed by your question
or comment to eight one, five to three zero, and
that standard messaging and data RaSE may apply. Another way
(01:06:40):
to reach us is through the talk pack feature iHeartRadio app.
All you have to do is download the app if
you haven't already done that on your smartphone. You search
AM thirteen under the zone. There's a little red button
there with a white microphone on it. You press that
button and you can leave us a message up to
thirty seconds of whatever you want to talk about it,
(01:07:01):
whether it's the house settlement or anything else. You know,
for college athletics, the NBA Finals, which we've addressed, the
NHL Stanley Cup Finals, the NFL Major League Baseball, College
World Series, approaching anything. Whatever is on your mind on that,
you can leave us a message on that. Maybe it
might be about the US Open, the United States Open
(01:07:22):
Golf Championship, which is the second of the majors. Excuse me,
the third of the majors, because Scotty Shefferler won the
PGA the second one, and Rory McClory won the first leg,
the Masters. I you never want to say never, but
(01:07:44):
I don't think in my lifetime and maybe not in
a lot of folks lifetimes. Are we going to be
able to see someone win all four legs or the
modern Grand Slam? And by modern I mean you know
what we know to be the modern Grand Slam, the
(01:08:07):
Masters in the PGA, then the US Open, then the
Open Championship, which a lot of Americans is simply referred
to as the British Open, but over there and internationally
as soon as the Open Championship, and it'd be difficult.
In the modern era. A couple of guys have won
three legs of it. Ben Hogan has Tiger Woods, has
(01:08:30):
Jack Nicholas. Nobody's. Nobody's ever won four all four legs
in the mod There was the Tiger Slam where he
won I think it was the last two legs in
one year and then the first two legs in the
next year, but nobody's. He won four consecutive majors, but
not that, And then, of course in nineteen thirty when
Bobby Jones was known as the Grand Slam.
Speaker 3 (01:08:53):
Back then.
Speaker 4 (01:08:55):
Was the US Open, the US Amateur of the British Open,
and the British Amateur. Because the PGA wasn't regarded as
being a major Championship and the Masters had yet to begin.
In fact, it was Jones himself who pioneered the creation
of the Masters, whose first year of operation was nineteen
thirty four Augusta National. So since then, no golfer has
(01:09:19):
won the modern Grand Slam, and I think it's in
large measure due to their four completely different kinds of
golf courses. Augusta National is a lot different from a
US Open course, a lot different in terms of the rough,
in terms of the way the greens play, the wind
(01:09:42):
that quite often happens at a US Open, which isn't
usually that prevailing at Augusta. The PGA is kind of
between the two, has some of the elements of US
Open style and some of the Masters as well. And
then the Open Championship in Great Britain is totally different
(01:10:03):
from the other three, and that it's all about how
you manage the win and link style golf and all
of those kinds of things at the birthplace of where
golf began. So it would take a special golfer to
be in contention in those and there have been some
pretty special golfers in the.
Speaker 3 (01:10:22):
Past that have won all four legs.
Speaker 4 (01:10:25):
Now Rory McElroy just finished, just completed winning the career
Grand Slam by winning.
Speaker 3 (01:10:31):
The Masters, which he had yet to do.
Speaker 4 (01:10:35):
And some of the greatest golfers in the world in
the history of the game never won all four legs.
Arnold Palmer never won a PGA, Tom Watson never won
a PGA, Sam Stein never won a US Open.
Speaker 3 (01:10:50):
Lee Trevino never won a Masters.
Speaker 1 (01:10:53):
So the.
Speaker 4 (01:10:55):
Golf courses quite often are constructed differently to certain golfers
skill level. Gary Player had a game, an international game,
being from South Africa, that he could play all those
different kinds of courses, and it was reflected he won
a career Slam. We mentioned Rory McClory just did it.
Jack Nicholas had done it, Jean Sarahson had done it,
(01:11:21):
and then obviously Ben Hogan had done it, but not all.
In fact, most don't pull that off. In fact, it's
difficult for a lot of golfers just even to pull
off winning a US Open and the US Open. We
see some names of people who win it, and it's
almost like you never hear from him ever again. Would
(01:11:43):
Andy North be on ESPN. He's an outstanding golf analyst,
by the way, really really good, But would he have
ever been on that had he won two US Opens
and very little else in his career. It's interesting the
way that's the way championship golf works with that. Now,
as the US Open prepares to get underway this week
(01:12:07):
at Oakmont, right outside Pittsburgh, there are some of the
biggest names in golf. As Bryson de Shamba gets ready
to defend his title, remember he won it Pinehurst last year,
he's looking for his third Majors. Also won a PGA,
so he's looking for that. Scotti Scheffler. Scheffler of course
won the PGA. Roy McRory won the Masters. We mentioned
(01:12:30):
as some of the contenders there. Phil Michelson was another
guy who's never won a US Open, and he's going
to try to be able to do that. But there
are other names, some big names who will not be there.
Here are the names that are not going to be there.
Right at the top of the list, obviously as Tiger.
(01:12:53):
He's going to miss his fourth US Open in five years,
recovering from that achilles surgery, so he's out. His most
recent PGA appearance was at the Open last summer, and
then he had back surgery in September, and he played
in the PNC Championship with his son Charlie in December,
and he was planning to return at the start of
the year. Took some time all following the passing of
(01:13:15):
his mother and then suffered the achilles injury. That's probably
going to take him out for the rest of this year.
Sergio Garcia going to sit out the US Open for
the first time in twenty five years. Sergio has not
missed an Open since two thousand. He was in the
realm of having to qualify for the Open and he
(01:13:35):
almost did, but he didn't. Now at bent Tree in
Dallas that he used to have a senior event at
bent Tree Golf Club. It's in far North Dallas, Long
Preston Road up there Bentry Hundry Club, and he three
putted the final hole of the thirty six hole competition
at Bentree and that resulted in a bogie and it
left him one shot short, one stroke short of the playoff.
(01:14:00):
So his US Open streak depended on an exemption from
the USGA, So that's what it came down. He's scheduled
to sit out right now. Max Homer, we talked about
his story last week. What an odd situation for him,
(01:14:22):
fired his caddy or what was said was he's just
not working for him any more. And he was ranked
tenth in the world when he teed off at Pineers
last year. He slipped to ninetieth in the rankings. He
three parted the final hole at that qualifying event Ohio
(01:14:45):
and then lost the playoff to Cameron Young, and that's
when he was carrying his own bag. Billy Horssechell, former
FedEx Cup winner, recorded his best US Open finish in
twenty thirteen, his first one, but he won't be able
to do it because he's expected to get back. He
had hip surgery. He's expected to get back late in
(01:15:06):
the summer, in the fall, but he's out. Will Zalatoris,
who finished second to Matt Fitzpatrick at the Open three
years ago. By the way, there's another name, Matt Fitzpatrick
of it. You know, not about non household names winning
major championships. But Zalatoris is out due to back surgery.
So he had missed the cut in his last four
(01:15:27):
major appearances. So he's out with a back injury. Ricky Fowler,
we've talked about him, former number four player in the world.
Speaker 3 (01:15:37):
He lost a playoff in Ohio.
Speaker 4 (01:15:40):
He finished tied for second eleven years ago in his
first ever US Open. Has ten wins in his career.
But he has qualified for the Open Championship in July,
which I believe is that.
Speaker 3 (01:16:01):
I'll check that and see where that is. But anyway,
he's he did not qualify for the US Open.
Speaker 4 (01:16:05):
Alex Norin had competed in eleven US Opens, was unable
to qualify for this year's turnat at Oakmont, second time
since twenty fourteen that he will miss the event. Luke Clanton,
who got an automatic spot in the Open after winning
the McCormick medal last year. That's the top amateur golfer,
but he gave up his place when he turned pro
(01:16:28):
and he subsequently failed to qualify. So here was a
guy who was going to be in the field but
as an amateur, but wanted to turn pro, and if
you turn pro, you give up that exempt spot, so
then you have to qualify, and he tried to qualify and.
Speaker 3 (01:16:43):
He was unable to do so he just turned pro.
Speaker 4 (01:16:48):
Former Florida state golfer made his debut this past weekend
at the Canadian Open. Did not make the cut, so
he won't be there as well. So those are the
guys who aren't going to be there. What about the favorites?
Who are the favorites? Well, obviously, as what was written
I think of ESPN just called it the clear favorite.
(01:17:08):
It's gott A Scheffler. Of course, he's never won a
US Open, but he's done well at Oakmont in the past.
His first round in a major was the twenty sixteen
US Open Oakmont when he was a sophomore at ut
at age nineteen, and he shot sixty nine. He ended
(01:17:29):
up missing the cup by one shot because he shot
seventy eight in the second round. Number one golfer in
the world obviously, and he's won three of his past
four starts by combined seventeen shots, including winning at the
Memorial a couple of years a couple of weeks ago.
So Scheffler would be there. Then they have a second
tier of guys who can win. Bryce into Shambau obviously
(01:17:53):
the defending champion and hasn't been real accurate off the
tee in the past at Oakmont and wasn't happy with
his iron play at the Masters. In the PGA, Roy McElroy,
who's been just kind of really weird after winning the PGA,
(01:18:14):
missed the cut at the Canadian Open. He hit only
thirteen of twenty eight fairways in two rounds. He's been
testing all these different drivers after he had the one
that he couldn't that was ruled ineligible. Couldn't do it anymore.
Colin Morikawa here's a guy who's been close. He's won
two majors in fact, two time runner up this season
(01:18:37):
at the Century and the Arnold Palmer, and he had
one in more than a year and a half. His
last win was in October twenty three in Japan. John Rahm,
a guy who obviously has won the Open before US Open,
won it at Torrey Pines in San Diego four years ago.
Kind of you know, fell apart down the stretch there
(01:18:58):
in the PGA against s Sheffler. Russell Heinley's a guy
they say keep an eye on. He won the Arnold Palmer,
his fifth PGA to her victory, tied for eighth at
Hilton Head of the RBC Heritage, fifth at the Memorial.
So he's in the neighborhood Septstraca. Another one of those
guys that's his name, is around and you see him
on the Leader board, so he's gonna be on the
(01:19:22):
European Ryder Cup team. Xanderschoffley a guy who of course
has won and had a landmark here. Last year he
won the last two legs of the Grand Slam. He
won the PGA and the Open, or he won the
second and the fourth legs last year the PGA, in
the Open, and he's finished in the top ten seven
(01:19:44):
of his eight starts in the US Open, including a
tie for seventh last year. Ludvig Oberg, twenty five year
old from Sweden who had played at Texas Tech, and
he's been really good, but.
Speaker 3 (01:19:59):
He he's only seventy seventh.
Speaker 4 (01:20:02):
Then Strokes gained total one hundred ninth and approach hundred
twenty ninth and punting. Adeki Matsiyama who won the Masters
twenty nineteen, missed the cut oft the PGA's a guy
Justin Thomas, had that playoff victory at the RBC Heritage.
Speaker 3 (01:20:16):
He's kind of cooled off a little bit.
Speaker 4 (01:20:17):
Missed the cut at the PGA, tied for thirty first
of the Memorial Shane Lowry. He's been pretty consistent other
than missing the cut at the PGA. A Royal Port
Rush is Port Rush in Northern Ireland is where the
Open will be in Northern Ireland at Royal Port Rush
and that's where he had won. So those are some
(01:20:42):
of the other ones. Harris English is a guy who's
been mentioned. He won the Farmers Insurance Opening San Diego.
Patrick can't lay of course, it's been over two and
a half years since he's won. Justin Rose who's won
the Open before that was twelve years ago. So those
are some of the other ones there who mentioned as
possible contenders to win the US Open. We've got more
(01:21:03):
coming up. We'll continue on thirteen under the Zone here
on this Monday afternoon. As we continue here on thirteen
under the Zone, a couple of ut related items to
get to, and.
Speaker 3 (01:21:18):
One of those.
Speaker 4 (01:21:21):
Was what I'd mentioned earlier about men's basketball is going
to open the season against Duke and the Dick Vital
Invitational Tuesday, November fourth, new men's college basketball event to
annually honor dig Vital, the Hall of Fame broadcaster, and
he celebrates his eighty sixth birthday today. In fact, it'll
(01:21:43):
be nashally televised by ESPN to ball time. He'll be
announced at a later date, so that'll be in Charlotte,
and that will be at the Spectrum Center. That's where
the Charlotte Hornets play at the NBA. That's where the
Longhorns played in the NCAA Tournament two years ago. They
lost in the second round to Tennessee Baseball. Congratulations to
(01:22:06):
Dylan Valentis. The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association today announced
its Freshman All American Team. It features players from thirty
three different schools and fifteen different conferences, and there were
two first teamers from LSU, one first teamer one second
(01:22:30):
teamer from TCU tied for the league with two freshmen
All American honorees each the ACC and one first team
five on the second team. SEC had six on the
first team. Led all conferences with seven players each selected
to the two teams combined Big Twelve at four selections,
three from the Atlantic Ten total three different additional conferences,
(01:22:54):
Big East, Big Ten, Big West had two freshmen All
Americans East each. So these players made it. The catchers
Jacob Lee from Virginia Commonwealth. Now this is all Freshman
All Freshman Team. First baseman Jake Hanley of Indiana, Second
baseman Chris Rembert of Auburn shortstop Tyler bella Kentucky Well.
Speaker 3 (01:23:18):
Both of those guys had great years.
Speaker 4 (01:23:20):
Ryan Loujo of Dayton the third baseman, Sawyer Strothschneider a TCU.
In the outfield, Derek Curryell of LSU outstanding outfielder, and
Brayden Burros of East Carolina that made up the outfield.
The designated hitter was Cole Johnson of Austin. P Alex
Hernandez of Georgia Tech was the utility player, and then
(01:23:40):
the pitchers starters Jack Owman of Yale, take Carey of Michigan,
Cam Bagwell of UNC, Wilmington Aiden King of Florida, Dylan
Valantis of Texas as a reliever, along with Case and
Evans of LSU as a reliever, and Brady sink Pierre
of Southeastern Louisiana as a relief. Pitchers. The second team
(01:24:03):
had the catcher Nate savoy oyl and Merrymount Dack Davis
of Louisville at first base, Dalton wins awake Forest at second,
Nate Castellon of cal polyot short Sam Yamaguchi of Nevada
at third.
Speaker 3 (01:24:16):
The outfield aj Vasco of Kansas State. We got to
see him.
Speaker 4 (01:24:19):
In fact, he had a home run against Texas and
then elimination game on Sunday. Tatum marsh of Stamford Land
and Harriston of Arizona State complete the outfield the DH
Sean mcmill of Saint John's and Noah Franco of TCU
utility player starting pitchers Mason Blash of Samford, Dax Whitney
(01:24:39):
of Oregon State, Wilson Majors of Creyton, Austin I Vanderbilt
all were starters relievers on the second team. Anderson As
of NC State, Nayton Assabase of Sevens of UC Santa Barbara,
and Walker McDuffie of North Carolina.
Speaker 3 (01:24:58):
So there it is.
Speaker 4 (01:25:00):
The congratulations to Dylan Valants being named a freshman All American,
so good to see that. And then Texas women's basketball
also with some news today a couple of items. First
of all, speaking of honors, Madison Booker selected for the
(01:25:20):
USA Women's America Cup Team trials. Twenty one athletes expected
to participate in the twenty twenty five USA Basketball Women's.
Speaker 3 (01:25:31):
America Cup Team Trials.
Speaker 4 (01:25:32):
They'll begin next week at the US Olympic at Paralympic
Training Center. In Colorado Springs. Following the selection of that team,
the US will travel to Santiago, Chile for the FOEBA
Women's America Cup that was from June twenty eighth to
July sixth. So the head coach will be Carol Lawson
from Duke and assistant coaches will be Delisia Milton Jones
(01:25:56):
of Old Dominion, Jenny Baranchick of Oklahoma, assist by Jim
Flannery of Creighton, and Robin Freelich of.
Speaker 3 (01:26:04):
Michigan State at the trials.
Speaker 4 (01:26:06):
So anyway, there you are, and congratulations to Madison Booker
being selected for that. Also women's basketball adding a player
to the roster that's right here in late June, or
it's not late June, it's still early going on mid June,
but they've added a guard, Grace Printer pr e NTR Printer.
(01:26:31):
Grace Printer will be on scholarship next year at UT.
What's different about Grace Printer in that she is signing
as late as she is signing. She's from Dublin, Ireland.
Five eight guard member of the Irish national team that
competed in the FOBA Women's EuroBasket Qualifiers. Also a member
(01:26:56):
of the Irish national youth team as well. Bick Schaeffer said,
I'm excited to announce the addition to Grace Printer. She
comes to us from Ireland, where she's played on their
national teams the past few years. She will be someone
who can really stretch the floor and shoot the ball
from deep range. She's very competitive from that standpoint, fits
in well with our current team and roster. She comes
from a wonderful family where we appreciate their trust and
(01:27:18):
confidence and allowing their daughter to come across the pond
to play for this staff, with this team, she'll be
a great teammate, bring a competitive spirit. In the under
eighteen euro Basket competition, she averaged sixteen points, five rebounds
to reassist, and then in the FOBA Under twenty division
(01:27:39):
she averaged fourteen points, four boards and five assists. So
another player added to the roster for Texas women's basketball.
And so there's some new t articles and some other
items to men. On the text line, somebody said, is
Goo's going to be there for the US Open? If not,
(01:28:00):
we all know it shouldn't count a real tournament. Okay,
we'll take ted under consideration. All right, We thank you
for joining us this afternoon tomorrow on the program, Mike White,
Texas softball coach, one final wrap up of everything, and
also Kendall Rogers to preview the College World Series. Thanks
so much to Ronald Savage, Junior our producer this afternoon
(01:28:24):
for him and for Cameron Parker put together that highlight montage.
Speaker 3 (01:28:27):
I'm Craig Waite.
Speaker 4 (01:28:27):
We thank you for joining us and we'll visit with
you tomorrow afternoon at two o'clock.
Speaker 3 (01:28:30):
Right here, I'm thirteen under the zone.
