Speaker 1 (00:05):
Seven seconds left out of LABASE live shot, no good
rebound try and no good and that is going to
do it.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Log Worts with the win.
Speaker 1 (00:14):
Final score time the Texas lag Worts one O two
and a love it Christian Lady Chefs forty four. What
more exhibition game to come for Texas.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
That was Craig Way on the call last night as
the Texas women played an exhibition at the Moody Center.
Then closer and closer into basketball season being underway here
on the forty Acres. But for now, we've got lots
of other sports to discuss here on a Friday afternoon
(00:49):
edition of The Craig Way Show. My name is Jay Krban,
the producer of this program, in for Craig here this
afternoon as he is somewhere between Dallas and Tupolo. At
the moment, Craig Airborne getting to Starkville, where he, Roger
Wallace and Will Matthews will have the network call of
(01:13):
Texas's fourth consecutive game away from home. Another tough SEC
test underway at three point fifteen on the SEC network.
But our coverage here on AM thirteen hundred zone starts
right and nearly eleven AM with the third and Longhorn Guys,
followed by Longhorn Game Day from twelve to two, and
(01:35):
then we send it out to Starkville.
Speaker 4 (01:38):
For Craig, Roger Will and the crew.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
But that call you heard to start the show today
from Moody Center last night, a one hundred and two
to forty four victory for the Texas women's basketball team
over the ladyshaps of Lubbock Christian. You heard Craig mention
the first of two exhibitions that they will play here
at home before getting the season underway November three against
(02:03):
the University of Incarnate Word. A couple of stats from
last night. Rory Harmon eleven assists, no turnovers in the win.
Madison Booker nine points, twelve rebounds. She was actually an
absurd plus fifty one in that game tonight. Plus minus
in basketball can be a little bit misleading.
Speaker 5 (02:20):
I know.
Speaker 3 (02:20):
I cited the stat yesterday for Victor wembin Yama leading
the way in that category.
Speaker 4 (02:24):
For the Spurs.
Speaker 3 (02:25):
But Booker one of those preseason players to watch not
just here on the forty Acres, but from a national perspective,
And you heard coach Vic Shaeffer say it on the
program with US here last week. Texas fans should not
take for granted the fact that Madison Booker and Rory
Harmon are running it back here for one more year.
(02:45):
Those two and the Lady Longhorns trying to do special
things this season, coming off of their first Final Four
appearance since two thousand and three a year ago. But
a sophomore took the spotlight for long stretches of the
scrimmage last night. That was Justice car Carlton, who had
twelve first quarter points, finished with twenty five of those
to go with ten rebounds, and she joined Craig courtside
(03:07):
after the.
Speaker 1 (03:08):
Game read about twelve of those twenty five in the
first quarter.
Speaker 4 (03:12):
You must have been coming out of the game, Yeah,
I sure did. What was?
Speaker 1 (03:15):
A lot has been said about how hard you've worked
in the off season. What's the biggest difference for you
in making, you know, the progress.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
From freshman to year.
Speaker 6 (03:25):
Yeah, I think just putting the trust in the weight
room has been something that's super big for me. Obviously
getting out of the brace helps a lot too, kind
of getting rid of that little limp I had.
Speaker 4 (03:34):
But yeah, I'm just super excited just putting the work in.
I didn't see a limb. So you feel good now, right, Yeah,
I feel real good.
Speaker 1 (03:43):
It was only the first Exhivision game. How about overall,
what you thought about the team's performance.
Speaker 6 (03:48):
Yeah, I think obviously there's always room for improvement, but
I think we did good tonight for the first game,
first live game, so a lot of people out here,
so I'm excited for.
Speaker 4 (03:57):
The rest of the season.
Speaker 1 (03:58):
Yeah, it didn't matter.
Speaker 4 (03:59):
If it's next us, She'll take ten. Yeah, I'll take it,
thank you that she will.
Speaker 3 (04:04):
Longhorn is hoping that Justice Carlton one of many young
players poised to take a big step forward. They've got
another one on Monday, seven o'clock against Texas Women's University
and that airs right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred The Zone. We're live today from two to five
here this afternoon, and let's give you a little preview
(04:25):
of what's coming up. In just a few minutes. Cameron
Parker is going to join us, the former producer of
this program now the host of Longhorn Game Day, and
he's gonna help us dive in with Texas football taking
on Mississippi State tomorrow afternoon. I Cam was at a
watch party at a station watch party last week during
(04:45):
the close survive in advance what Start called a culture
win against Kentucky, a day in which the Texas offense
really struggled, but they found a way to escape Lexington
with an overtime victory sixteen thirteen meeting that was only
two losses. Everything still in front of this Texas team.
We'll get Cam's thoughts on this road test for Texas.
(05:07):
There are three more games on the Longhorn schedule against
ranked opponents, all three against top ten teams, and Vanderbilt
Texas A and M obviously to close out the stretch.
Then that trip to Athens a few weeks from now,
and yet this game in Starkville feels like a real
inflection point on the Longhorn season. We'll get Cameron Parker's
thoughts on that. In just a few moments. We will
(05:29):
have Inconceivable during this program and Fridays for Inconceivable mean
Florida man here on the Craigway Show, and our Florida
man in focus is going to be Terry Rozier, one
of many NBA personnel implicated in the latest gambling scandal
announced by the FBI yesterday. We'll have all the latest
(05:52):
updates on that for you during Inconceivable today, Then as
we move into the three o'clock hour, we'll talk World Series.
With the Fall Classic Battle for the Commissioner's Trophy getting
underway this evening. We've got updates on who made the roster,
who didn't, and might have some starting lineup cards turned
in by then.
Speaker 4 (06:11):
As well.
Speaker 3 (06:12):
We'll preview Game one of the twenty twenty five World
Series between Craig Way as beloved Los Angeles Dodgers and
the Toronto Blue Jays, Game one at Rogers Center just
after seven o'clock Central time tonight. We'll also here from
Coach Sark during that three o'clock hour his conversation with
(06:32):
Craig Way from Longhorn Weekly, which aired last night at
six o'clock right before that Texas Women's basketball scrimmage, and
if you missed it, don't worry, it will re air
tonight here at seven o'clock on Sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred The Zone Coach Sark sitting down with Craig as
well as special guests throughout the season who will get
(06:54):
you all caught up on the state of the program
and an in depth preview of this week's matchup with
Mississippi State. We'll give you a little snippet from that
show later on here during this program, and we'll try
to connect with Craig if mother nature, and by mother
nature I mean the fickle, unpredictable nature of commercial travel permits.
(07:20):
We'll see if we can connect with Craig during the
three o'clock hour of the program. But we've got lots
more to come after that, because in the four o'clock hour,
we'll have some NFL news, including some updates from Jerry Jones,
who spoke with our friends at one of five to
three the fan and gave us an update on his
(07:40):
mindset from a trade perspective. Cowboys are in Denver Sunday
afternoon for a three twenty five PM kick Sitting at
three three and one, suddenly in second place in the
NFC East, big opportunity for the Cowboys to make a
statement on the road. In that one, we'll have a
little bit that along with a look at the rest
(08:02):
of the NFL slate. Then Texan Lives EJ. Sanchez joins us.
He's in San Antonio calling some state water polo at
the moment, but when it comes to high school football,
man EJ is plugged in and it's a jam pack
slate tonight, including the Battle of the Lakes, including some
clarity in District twenty five to six A with a
(08:22):
couple matchups towards the top end of things, Vandergrift against
Huddo and a game that could determine the district lead.
I know McNeil will be watching that game closely, as
will Vista Ridge and Cedar Ridge. Very crowded picture, as
it has been all year long. We've covered it well
here on thirteen hundred Zone in this program in particular,
e J. Sanchez is going to join us and preview
(08:42):
tonight's slate and hand out some mid season awards, some superlatives,
if you will. Now that we've seen it's crazy to
think about the majority of the regular season already. In
the rearview mirror, we'll get to some computer predictions as
well on some of those high school football games. Great
night to get out and watch a high school game,
(09:03):
weather permitting. I know that's caused a couple of game
times to shift up and around. As of now, my
bast Drop Bears are still starting at seven thirty. But
don't worry, I'm not going to bolt out here early.
Even if they move that kick, we'll just have to
find a way. The show must go on with some
weather systems potentially coming through a little later on here tonight,
(09:24):
so we'll talk high school football with DJ Sanchez. Always
fun to have him on the show during the four
o'clock hour, and then lots of other college football games
to dive into. There's a lot of ranked on ranked
matchups this week, a lot of trap games on the schedule,
particularly for teams towards the top of the SEC. We'll
circle the wagons on a couple of those towards the
(09:45):
end of the program today. But we want you to
get involved, as always via the text line. You can
text us at eight one five three zero. Standard messaging
and data rates may apply, and all you have to
do is start your message with the word Texas. That's
eight one five three zero. Text the word Texas followed
by your message. We'll try and get those questions answered
for you over the course of this fun Friday afternoon
(10:07):
edition of the program. There's another way you can get
involved in the show, and I'd highly recommend it because
today it means you can win some things. You've got
a couple contests running, and in order to use those,
you've got to download the iHeartRadio app and use the
talkback feature.
Speaker 4 (10:23):
Let me tell you what you can win.
Speaker 3 (10:25):
One of those contests is for a four pack of
tickets to see the Texas Stars take on the Iowa
Wild on Saturday night at the AGB Center in Cedar Park.
So here's how you enter. Download the iHeartRadio app completely free.
Takes maybe five seconds to download. Then you search AM
thirteen hundred to zero and that's where we are. You'll
(10:46):
see two buttons, the play button and the red microphone button.
You're going to tap that microphone and leave us a
message up to thirty seconds and have to be thirty seconds,
but it can be. And all you have to do
is use the keyword that you're out to hear, and
today that keyword is Zamboni.
Speaker 4 (11:06):
Zamboni. So it's simple.
Speaker 3 (11:10):
If you want to win a four pack of Texas
Stars tickets, spend your Saturday night after the Longhorns are
all done and dusted see the Texas Stars take on
the Iowa Wild by leaving us a talkback message with
the keyword zamboni while you have that iHeart app open,
or while you're opening it up. We've got another contest
(11:33):
and that has been going on all week long, calling
it Craig's cow Bell Contest. And here's how it works.
As you all know, Mississippi State well known for their
cow bells. It'll be a big topic of discussion on
the show today. Later on you'll hear how Coach Sark
responded when Craig asked him about it.
Speaker 4 (11:50):
It's it's it's a theme.
Speaker 3 (11:51):
When you play Mississippi State, you better be ready for
a lot of cow bell. So inspired by the Saturday
Night Saturday Yight Love Saturday Night Live sketch we all
know it with Will Ferrell Christopher Walking. We don't fear
the Reaper, but.
Speaker 1 (12:10):
The last time I checked, we don't have a whole
lot of songs that feature the cow bell.
Speaker 2 (12:15):
I gotta have my cow bell.
Speaker 1 (12:16):
Baby, I gotta be doing myself a disservice.
Speaker 4 (12:21):
But I remember this band. If I didn't performed the
hell out.
Speaker 7 (12:24):
Of this, guess what I got a fever and the
only prescription is more cow bell.
Speaker 3 (12:34):
And you heard Jimmy Fallon breaking character in the background
as well. There're some things never changed. So don't fear
the Reaper. That one is ruled out. We've also mentioned
that a couple of songs have already been submitted several times.
We have been running this contest since Monday, and so
that means it's almost time for a deeper cut. Because
(12:55):
if your song is picked, you have to be the
first one who submitted it in order to win. So
leave your talk back message keyword zamboni if you want
to win Texas Stars tickets, and as always, tell us
what you think the best song is that features the
cow Bell. Up next, we'll visit with Cameron Parker, who
(13:16):
will be on Longhorn Game Day tomorrow morning helping preview
Texas as they head to the land of Cowbell's.
Speaker 4 (13:22):
That's Starkville, Mississippi.
Speaker 3 (13:24):
That's coming up here on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone.
Speaker 8 (13:30):
Welcome back to the Craig Way Show and the voice
of the Longhorns, Craig Wagon. Follow Craig on social media.
Speaker 3 (13:37):
Horn Little cow Bell coming back as the Longhorns get
ready to travel to Starkville take on Mississippi State. I
want to welcome in Cameron Parker to the program. Cameron
will be with you for the pregame coverage as the
(13:59):
Longhorn Lawren's Game Day show begins at noon tomorrow afternoon.
But first up, first things, first camera, and a very
oppressing question for you. What is the best cow bell
song in your opinion?
Speaker 9 (14:13):
Man, I don't know if I have an answer for that.
Speaker 5 (14:17):
What spin? What Spin?
Speaker 9 (14:19):
The top choice on the text line so far this week?
The one that comes to mind, of course, is need
More cal Bell from the Will Farrell SNL skit with
Christopher walking with a Blue Oyster cult. I believe Blue
Oyster Colt that that's one that comes top of mind. Yeah, well,
what's been the number number one choice so far on
our text line this week?
Speaker 3 (14:39):
We declared that one ineligible as just the inspiration for
the contest.
Speaker 4 (14:44):
We've we've heard a lot.
Speaker 3 (14:45):
I think you just heard the number one selection that
was War with Low Rider. Of course, the iconic scene
from Daisy Confused has Little Austin tie into it as well.
So well, we'll let you get away with the Will
Farrell answer for now. We've heard the drops throughout the
show and maybe you'll come back with a different answer
on Long Court Game Day tomorrow.
Speaker 4 (15:03):
But let's get to.
Speaker 3 (15:05):
What's on every Texas fan's mind right now, and that
is the state of this offense going into another road
test in the SEC just one hundred and seventy nine
yards last week, Sark has hinted all week at some
adjustments in your mind, what do you think those will
look like on Saturday?
Speaker 9 (15:22):
Well, everything starts and begins with the offensive line. My
biggest concern going to this season, and the one thing
that was maybe holding me back from taking Texas to
when the National Championship and SEC was just like, we
don't really know how good this offensive line is supposed
to be. Replacing four starters on the offensive line. Yeah,
(15:44):
you're returning you know, DJ Campbell and a couple other
guys and stuff who have played, but they haven't really started.
And so far, you know, we've seen this has been
the crux of the Texas offense. You know a lot
of issues are pointed to arch Manning and yeah, he's
missing some throws that I think he wishes he had back,
some throws that we expect him to make in his sleep.
(16:06):
But you watch that Kentucky game. We all saw it.
The offensive line got manhandled. I mean, I'm not sure
how much stock you guys put in the PFF grades.
I don't think it's the end all be all. But
when your left guard scores fourteen point one, I think
fourteen out one hundred's pretty bad, right, And that just
(16:26):
tells you kind of I think Nick Brooks's going to
be a fantastic player. I think he's going to be
an NFL player, But you know, right now he's not there.
That's probably why he did not start to begin this season.
But Texas probably has a better chance of moving the
ball with Brooks out there then with him not out there.
And then you throw in the factor that Cole Hudson
gets injured. It seems like he is going to be
(16:47):
out for a while. Connor Robertson missed last week. That
probably played a role into a lot of the miscommunications
all the offensive lines. So I think, you know, starts
looking around this offensive line room. It's like, man, can
we just give Arch a clean pocket for a couple
of plays here? You know, adjustments, our adjustments. You know
a lot's been made of the play calling stuff. He
(17:08):
can't throw the football for Arch. You know, Arch, he
schemed up some wide open receivers and either Arch has
not been able to make the throw or you know,
receivers just aren't getting open sometimes. So I think for
what starts looking for is just some consistency. I think
what Texas is looking for is just some consistency from
the offensive line, because if you have a good offensive line,
(17:31):
then it sets up the pass and it sets up
the run. And that's what Texas is obviously lacking. Locked
it last we against Kentucky, and they're going to need
it to step up and figure some things out. They
want to go on a run down this final stretch
in twenty twenty five season.
Speaker 3 (17:46):
Yeah, I think I think your eyes are not lying
to you on the offensive line. And you mentioned the
low PFF individual grades. I mean as a unit, they're
giving up pressure on forty two percent of dropbacks right now.
That's the third one among power forward teams. And that
leads into my next question, which is the Longhorns are
likely to see CJ. Baxter back out on the field
(18:08):
in some capacity in this game. Now, I know that's
going to bring a lot more versatility to the run game,
but he also had five catches in that Ohio State game.
Is having him as a potential safety blanket maybe a
bigger deal than what we're talking about, I think.
Speaker 9 (18:24):
So, I mean, remember CJ. Baxter was named the starter
a year ago, you know, before he went down with
those two knee injuries that set him out for the
rest of the season in twenty twenty four and in
this year, you know, we haven't really seen him a
hundred percent. But we saw the Wisner Baxter duo against
Ohio State, in which that's probably the best game all
(18:45):
year Texas has actually run the football, was against the
number one team in the country. Since then, they have
not been able to run the ball effectively, and that
includes somewers. Some group of five schools like San Jose
State in UTEP struggle that times, and I think you
kind of point to no Wisner, no Baxter in those games.
We've seen some flashes from James Simon and Christian Clark.
(19:09):
I mean, last week started effectively just abandoned the run
game at one point in Kentucky, just did not have
any trust in his offensive line, did not have any
trust in Trey Wiser. I mean, you think about it
the final drive where Texas went up by three in
regulation first play with a seven yard run by Trey Wiser.
But outside of that, we had not really seen much
(19:30):
trust in the run game. And this is a Mississippi
State Bulldog defensive line that Texas should be able to
run the ball on. But guess what you said the
same thing about Kentucky. Now the CJ. Baxter completely changed
the run game. I don't think it completely changed. I
don't think all of a sudden now you're going to
see Texas go from Arch being your leading rusher to
(19:52):
Texas running for two hundred yards. But there is a
reason why there was so much hype going into the
season to run the Texas running back room was because
of what Baxter brought to the table two years ago
his freshman year at Texas. So it's a big boost
for Texas and just having his experience his leadership out there.
I think defensively, we have seen the leadership really step up,
(20:16):
from Colin Simmons to Anthony Hill, to Michael Taff, from
Tray Moore, all those guys on the back end, Manny
Muhammad offensively, a lot of young guys out there who
have not been in this program for a long time
and having played big reps for a long time. SI
to Baxter, I don't he missed last season, but he's
been here for three years, right, He's been a part
of two college football playoff teams. He's been to the
(20:37):
SEC in the Big Chup Championship, so he understands. I mean,
he was getting huge carries against Washington in the College
Fotball Playoffs on my phone two years ago. He's a
huge piece of this offense that's been missing, both in
terms of what he can provide on the field from
a performance standpoint, but also a leadership standpoint. And I
think Texas needs more of those guys offensively. Now, can
(20:59):
he just get a.
Speaker 3 (20:59):
Blocker well, and you know, one big piece returns, but
you take another one off the board with Michael taff out,
presumably for the next stretch of games here coming up.
There's never a good game to be without your leading tackler,
without your signal caller in the back end of a defense.
But I feel like that's especially true against Mississippi State,
(21:20):
even the style of offense that they play. How can
the Texas defense kind of overcome that challenge against this
spread offense this week?
Speaker 9 (21:31):
Texas is not lacking the talent in the back end.
Now we're looking at Derek Williams, who, again, you know,
before his injury against Oklahoma, was it a year or
two ago, he was the starting safety for Texas. He's
a dog. Xavier Folsomite, who is an outstanding talent who
missed last week. Those two guys expected to play some
(21:53):
big time reps against Mississippi State and probably against Standardbilt
next week. It's not the talent, it's just what Michael
Tapp brings to the field is he's a very high
IQ player. Right, So I'm not worried about Texas not
being able to defend, whether it's Anthony Evans, the Georgia
(22:13):
transfer who's been great, or Brendan Thompson, who I can't
believe I think I was in college. I think, Jake,
I think you were in college. From Brendan Thompson at
Texas at one point, it's more about miscommunications in giving
up a deep ball, not because Texas defended at poorly,
just because you have guys back there who have not
played a lot of snaps and played a lot of reps.
That's the one thing that maybe does worry me because
(22:36):
Blake Shaping can throw the deep ball and I will
throw an interception or two, but he will throw it,
and he'll definitely throw it to Brendan Thompson. That's the
one thing that does concern me. Possibly it's just maybe
some slip ups in communications defensively, but we know Derek
Williams fills to me, Jordan Johnson, Rubelle. I mean, the
defense is what we thought it was going into the season.
What they did against Kentucky and Oklahoma truly truly incredible.
(22:59):
It's unfortunate that a lot of the talk has been
on the Texas offense the last two weeks because it
has underperformed. But what this Texas defense is doing is
really really special.
Speaker 3 (23:11):
And I know you got to run, Cam, but Texas
total opposite right now of your Dallas Cowboys, with the
offense in full gear and the defense really struggling. Have
they brought you back in yet for this Sunday's game
against Denver?
Speaker 9 (23:24):
Absolutely not. Come on, Jake, if you understand your commanders
they're going through with all the injuries and Jayden Dana
is really really unfortunate to see. I think we all
kind of knew the way the Condar season was going
that at some point Jayden Danas was going to get
banged up in that game. But no, I'm not buying
into this Deatoun. I think I'm buying I bought in
(23:45):
the Brian Schottenheimers offensively, I mean his his offense is incredible.
George Packins, Why did Pitts portray him? Because what he
was a locker room issue? Maybe it was a quarterback issue.
Maybe look at any receiver. If if Russell Wilson in
mits Trubisky in, who who else was your quarterback? Maybe
it's the quarterback and not the receiver at fall shoot,
(24:05):
I would have gone crazy too if I was George
Pickens playing bets through team. So thank you Mike Tomlin
for sending us George Pickins because he's been incredible in Dallas.
Good to have CD lambback. I think Dak has been
the best player in football this season. Unfortunately, defense might
be the worst in football. But hey, Denver, Denver's been
begging teams to beat them. They've been begging New York
(24:27):
please win this team for us. We don't want to
win it. And then the fourth quarter bow Knicks remembers
how to play football. I think he has with the
most double digit comeback wins so far this season already
like two or three, So maybe we'll get another one
this Sunday. But I have not bought in. But Dak
Prescott has been the best player in the NFL this season.
That's my hot take.
Speaker 3 (24:48):
I don't know, you sound dangerously close to bought in.
Maybe we'll have to get folks to come out and
ask you in person at Cover three tomorrow. I know
you got to run. Thanks so much for the time today, Cam,
Thanks Jake.
Speaker 9 (24:59):
Looking forward tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (25:00):
Yes, and that is a twelve o'clock start on Longhorn's
game Day. You can see Cameron Parker, Mike Harball, Horg
and Mark Henry hosting Longhorns Game Day. Our coverage, of course,
starts at eleven am right here on Sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred The Zone with Nick Shuley and the Gang
previewing everything on third and Longhorn. Now he had Aaron
(25:21):
Williams and Jeremy Hills joined the program last week. You'll
see special guests at times, like those guys. Aaron Williams
great to join us at Little Woodrow's last week.
Speaker 4 (25:31):
So you never know who's gonna swing by.
Speaker 3 (25:33):
Some Longhorn legends, some insiders, some experts that cover both
the Longhorns and the Bulldogs.
Speaker 4 (25:38):
Should be a jam pack program and a lot of fun.
Speaker 3 (25:40):
We hope to see you in the upstairs area of
Cover three off of Anderson Lane for Longhorn's game day.
Start off your Saturday right with us here on sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred the Zone. One more note on
the Longhorns before we hit to the break, and that
is the latest ESPN FPI. The Football Power Index has
(26:03):
the Longhorns right now at the fourteenth best odds to
make the playoff at thirty nine percent. And I'm wondering
if at home you think maybe that's too high, too low,
or just right, go ahead and send us a text
at eight one five three zero, send the word texts
followed by your message, or go onto the iHeartRadio app
(26:24):
submit a talkback message by tapping thirteen hundred the zone
and then the red microphone button will try and get
some of those on the air later in the show. Today,
that thirty nine percent for Texas slots in just behind Ole,
miss at forty eight percent, Oklahoma at forty two percent,
and just ahead interestingly ahead of Vanderbilt at thirty two
(26:48):
percent in Missouri at twenty nine percent. Again just a
predicted mat trick from ESPN the Football Power Index predicting
the Longhorns still have a little less than a forty
percent shot of making the college football playoff despite a
five and two start to twenty twenty five. All right, up, next,
(27:09):
we head down to what Craig and Cam who you
just heard the former producer of this program called the
most flaccid of the lower forty eight Yep, it's Florida
Man Friday, and it's inconceivable. Next here on sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred The.
Speaker 10 (27:22):
Zone back for hour number two on the program this
Friday afternoon, Texas heading to Starkfield to take on Mississippi State.
Speaker 3 (27:45):
Appreciate Cameron Parker joining us to help preview that game
during the last hour. We've got much more on that
still to come, as well as some NFL news and
notes and a jam packed high school football Friday Battle
of the Lakes tonight here in Austin. I'm get gonna
look at the weather to see we've gotta have a
(28:06):
floodwatch at seven o'clock, so potentially heavy systems coming through.
Speaker 4 (28:10):
We hope they hold off until later.
Speaker 3 (28:13):
Here this afternoon so that all the high school football
games around the area can be played. It's a great
slate and we will preview it all with Texan lives
e J. Sanchez just after four o'clock here on the
program today and for now, it's time to dive into
the Fall Classic, which will be played at the Dome
tonight north of the border in Canada.
Speaker 4 (28:35):
The Blue Jays and the Dodgers.
Speaker 3 (28:37):
Toronto, the number one seat in the American League, will
have home field advantage as they look for their first
World Series since nineteen ninety three. Of course, the Blue
Jays won back to back during those years. Paul Malader,
Roberto Alomar, Ricky Henderson, Joe Carter, Dave Winfield, David Cohne.
(28:57):
Those were the glory days with the Toronto Blue Jays,
and they've had a long battle to get back, a
lot of near misses with the Jose Bautista led teams,
and this twenty twenty five Blue Jay team emerged from
a very very difficult American League East Division, survived a
little surge from the Yankees late in the division series,
(29:20):
battle back from three to two down against the Seattle
Mariners after dropping the first two games of the championship
series at home, able to come back win two out
of three in Seattle and then win both games six
and seven with some George Springer heroics headlining things for Toronto.
(29:44):
Mention they went back to back in ninety two and
ninety three. All the Dodgers are trying to become the
first repeat champions in over twenty five years. The Yankees
and their three championships in a row from nineteen ninety
eight to two thousand, the last time a team has
repeated is very, very difficult to do, more difficult to
do in baseball than any of the other major sports
(30:06):
over that same time period. And of course there's a
storyline of Clayton Kershaw, who will be retiring at the
season's conclusion. He's taken a backseat to some of the
other big, big names in the Dodgers' rotation that is
peaking at the right time. In a few minutes, we'll
hear from Dave Roberts as he discusses all of that,
and we'll see just how much Kershaw is even involved
(30:28):
in the series. But the Dodgers trying to go back
to back cement their dynasty here in the early to
now mid part of the decade with the course the
victory during the COVID season in twenty twenty one, and
then the victory last year in that epic, epic series
over the Yankees. So a couple keys to the series
(30:49):
we're going to dive into. First, we'll be talking about
the Dodger offense because here's the scary thing. As Jeff
pass had pointed out, the Dodger offense hasn't necessarily even
hit its stride yet. You look at the ten postseason
games that the Dodgers have played, their sweep of the
Cincinnati Reds, sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers, and they didn't
(31:17):
get a whole lot in the way of RBIs from
gen and I should should mentioned as well. Their Division
series went over the Philadelphia Phillies, Freddie Freeman and Max
Buntzi just one RBI each, and they are seeing pretty
much nothing but breaking balls. You look down the list
(31:37):
after after you get past that part of the lineup,
with shoey Otani at the top providing clutch hits in
the form of big home runs, three of them in
Game four against the Brewers to help punch the Dodgers
ticket to the Fall Classic, and ta Oscar Ernandez, who's
come up big as well.
Speaker 4 (31:58):
The Dodgers just four other home runs, So.
Speaker 3 (32:02):
Their offense by Dodger standards, has not necessarily performed up
to its capability. It's just that the pitching has been
so good from their big horses at the top of
the rotation Yoshinova, Yamamodom, Blake Snell, who will start tonight,
and Tyler Glass now that it hasn't even come close
(32:22):
to mattering.
Speaker 4 (32:24):
Another big key of the series.
Speaker 3 (32:25):
If you flip this the other way with the Dodgers'
pitching staff against the Blue Jay bats, is kind of
a something's got to give situation, And perhaps to Anthony
du Bundo at The Ringer who brought this to my
attention in this article this morning, the Blue Jays just
do not strike out. Craig and I talked about this
the way that had a wear down effect. I think
(32:46):
it was big for them in surviving the Seattle Mariners
in that seven game American League Championship series, just working
pitch counts, forcing a Mariner bullpen that was already taxed
from a fifteen inning win over the Tigers in the
division series to work for every single out in that series.
(33:08):
No team in the major leagues struck out at a
lower rate than the Blue Jays this year, and they
didn't sacrifice a whole lot of power doing it, and
then you have the Dodger pitching staff, who in terms
of swing and miss stuff, Yeah, it's as good as
it gets. The Blue Jays strikeout rate in the playoffs
(33:30):
fourteen point eight percent. That's even better than the league
best mark they had in the regular season just below
eighteen percent. And despite that, the Blue Jays swing all
the time they make contact, and with guys like Vladimir
Guerrero Junior and George Springer, they've got a big time
power punch at the top of their lineup. Now they're
(33:53):
gonna get Bob Baschett backs. That's big news for the
Blue Jays, as they announced this morning, Bishett made playoff roster.
Speaker 4 (34:01):
Even bigger news.
Speaker 3 (34:02):
He's playing second base tonight and batting forth first time
he's played since September sixth, with that knee sprain. Bashett
was having a real career year hitting three to eleven
coming into this postseason that he has not been able
to take parting quite yet. And he's playing a position
tonight that he has not played save for one game
(34:25):
in Triple A in twenty nineteen. It is a big,
big gamble being taken by John Schneider, who will hear
from in a little bit. But the right handed bat
at Bashett in there against the lefty Blake Snell. And
the gamble is this Bob Baschet's batmans so much to
this Blue Jay team and they need his bat in
the lineup that as long as his defense is just serviceable,
(34:48):
just serviceable, he's gonna give them enough of an edge
to start over Nathan Lucas or to start over Isaiah
Kiner Fleffa against the left handed arm like Blake Snell,
and presumably you'll see him start the rest of the
series if he looks comfortable out there at second base tonight.
Not gonna move on Dressimenez out of that shortstop spot.
He's been providing some clutch hits all the postse ison
long for Toronto. Big home run late in that championship series.
(35:12):
George Springer will lead off, then David Schneider, then Vlad
Junior Boba Schett batting forth playing second base for the
Blue Jays tonight behind their rookie starter trey Ya Savage
against the Dodgers and Blake Snell. No lineup card out
just yet for Dave Rogers, but Dave roberts I should
say their manager but he did have to make some
decisions today Dave Roberts, and he got thrown a curveball
(35:35):
just yesterday. Alex Vesia reliable reliever. What are a few
bullpen guys that he could truly count on in a
much maligned Dodger bullpen this year? His whip this year
below one eighty strikeouts twenty two walks for a Dodger
bullpen that walks a lot of guys. And outside of
(35:57):
Rookie Sasaki, who's he urged as a closer after beginning
this year, of the Dodgers starting rotation, Vessi has been
probably the most trusted late inning, high leverage situation arm.
And you got Blake Trinen in that mix as well.
But when the Dodgers sat there twenty six man roster
for the World Series, Alex Vessio was left off, as
(36:20):
was right handed reliever Ben Casparius. At Gardo Henriquez and
Will Kleine we're included on the roster. Some people thought
Tanner Scott, left handed bat, would make the roster, but
they opted for a righty arm in Casparius instead, So the.
Speaker 4 (36:37):
Dodgers will carry twelve pitchers.
Speaker 3 (36:39):
Here's the kicker Showyotani doesn't actually count towards the team's
pitcher limits. He's a two way player. And look, if
you're up in arms and that, I don't know what
to tell you. You don't see showey Otani's every day.
The Dodgers shouldn't be basically panalised. He shouldn't count against
the pitcher limits. Then you can carry one less. So
(37:01):
Tani among the pitchers that we'll see for the Dodgers
in this World Series as well. But Alex Vesia and
his wife handling a deeply personal family matter, the Dodgers
can choose to put him on the family emergency list,
so that's a three to seven day stint. So if
they do go that way, he could return as soon
(37:24):
as Game three for the Dodgers, but instead they're going
with Kline and Enriquez, two more right handed arms. The
Blue Jays have some big time right handed bats, so
that's the route that Dave Roberts decided to take Boba
Schett back in the fold for the Blue Jays playing
second base. And you know, it's been kind of that
(37:48):
sort of year for the Blue Jays where they've had
to piece together different glue guys behind their stars to
make up for injuries like Boba sheet. We've seen it
with big performances from Ernie Clement Andres Jimenez. Dalton var
show at times during this postseason, David Schneider getting on
(38:09):
base at the top of that lineup, and despite the
Blue Jays having home field advantage and the number one
seed in the American League. John Schneider was was was
posed this question during the media availabilities yesterday. Does he
(38:30):
view this series as sort of a David versus Goliad
story with the Dodgers having what the most what a
lot of people will tell you is the most talented
roster in the recent history of Major League Baseball. Here's
what John Schneider had to say when he was posed
that prompt.
Speaker 11 (38:51):
Two best teams left standing, again, built differently, have different strengths,
and the man, there's a reason we're here and there's
a reason they're there.
Speaker 5 (39:02):
You know.
Speaker 11 (39:02):
I think the one thing we cannot do is look
over there and say that is Goliath. That is a
beatable baseball team that has its flaws and that has
its really really good strengths. How we expose each of
them will determine who wins the series, and I got
all the confidence in the world in my guys. I'll
say it till the day I die with this group.
(39:24):
I'll put this group of twenty six up against anybody.
And they're looking forward to taking on what is on
paper the best team in baseball that is playing really
well right now. And I don't think they have it
any other way.
Speaker 3 (39:37):
And when if you're going to take down Goliath, and
I know he didn't want his team to look at
him that way, can you expose any of the Dodgers' flaws?
Stopping the Dodgers's put it that way starts with stopping Showeyotani.
So how does Schneider think that his pitching staff will
approach the puzzle of slowing down his bat at the plate?
Speaker 11 (40:00):
Yeah, I think they'll all kind of be part of
the puzzle. Elite talent obviously. I think you have to
be very mindful of when the top of the order
is coming around.
Speaker 2 (40:13):
Right.
Speaker 11 (40:15):
We've talked at length about how to treat it. We've
talked at length about when to do this, and you've
got to read the situation, you know what I mean.
I mean, they have a great team. They have three
Hall of Famers at the top of their lineup, so
you got to pick your poison a little bit. But
you also have to understand that I think you look
(40:37):
at Game four of the NLCS, I think we're talking
about a totally different kind of animal here that can
do things on the field that not many people can do.
With all the respect in the world for Aaron Judge
and cal Raleigh, So we'll be mindful, I do know that,
and we'll try to give them as many different looks
as we can.
Speaker 3 (40:55):
Yeah, similar to the approach they took facing cal Raleigh,
facing Aaron Jill Judge, blue Jays didn't shy away from
pitching to cal Raley in big moments, inducing several key
double plays, including one from the Big Dumper in Game
six game with the Mariners had their chances. When you
heard John Schneider say when to do this quote unquote,
(41:16):
he put four fingers up to say, as if we're
going to figure out when are we pitching to show
A from a Blue Jay perspective and when are we
just going to walk him? And it's an experience facing
show A that Dave Roberts was asked about. He was asked,
do you sense your opponents feeling Otawani's presence when he's
(41:40):
up there in the box, and Dave Roberts had an
interesting answer.
Speaker 12 (41:43):
You feel show Hey when he's in the hole, let alone,
on deck or in the batter's box. You feel it.
He's always looming and it certainly you know whether he's
swinging the bat well or not. He has the ability
to impact the game, so you feel it.
Speaker 3 (42:00):
And Otani is healthy going into this postseason. That's a
big deal from a Dodger perspective, given his injury he
was dealing with last year. Dave Roberts was asked, what
kind of world series do you hope it is for
the best player in the world.
Speaker 12 (42:18):
I hope it's completely different for show Hey. Certainly having
him healthy going in is a great thing. I think
him kind of feeding off that last game is a
good thing. You know, last year it was just more
of just being able to post and stand in the
batter's box and do whatever he could sort of help
(42:39):
us where I think this year he's equipped to have
a big series and he's just gonna have to be
smart and disciplined because they're going to pitch him careful
and he's just got to be smart and if he's disciplined,
then it should bode well for him and for all
of us.
Speaker 3 (42:55):
That discipline and that calmness, poise under the bright lights.
Maybe that's an advantage for LA I know they're going
to be on the road in this game, but having
played in this Fall Classic last year, and for some
of these Dodgers players twice that three times now in
the last five years, is there an advantage to this
(43:18):
World Series experience for la versus the newness of this
moment for most of the Blue Jay roster.
Speaker 4 (43:24):
Here's Dave Roberts.
Speaker 12 (43:26):
First off, we're very excited to be here as well.
I think that, you know, some part of it. You
could argue that the naivete, the inexperience is a good thing,
you know, but I feel that the ability to manage moments,
(43:46):
your heartbeat is advantageous and understand especially in a seven
game series. So I think that we're equipped to play
well and we're facing a very good ball club.
Speaker 2 (43:58):
But I like the experience. But I also like the.
Speaker 12 (44:03):
Enthusiasm that you know, those guys have, and we have
some of those guys too.
Speaker 3 (44:08):
What about for John Schneider, who was asked, how will
your team translate the magical season you've had under what's
now the brightest lights and the biggest stage in the sport.
Speaker 9 (44:21):
We'll see, you know.
Speaker 11 (44:22):
I think there's a lot of first for a lot
of these guys, myself included, staff included, you know, So
I want them to enjoy it, you know again, I
think that players are going to feel certain things that
they haven't felt before, right once you get that initial
kind of shock and awe off you. I think that
this team is really good about focusing on what they
need to do. So we'll see, you know again, I
(44:46):
I'm going to take a few seconds to enjoy it.
Speaker 9 (44:47):
I'm sure they will.
Speaker 11 (44:49):
And then when you when you get into compete mode,
hopefully it slows down a little bit, but it is
going to be a pretty electric atmosphere here tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (44:59):
And in this World Series preview segment full Circle, remember
John Schneider said we can't look at the other side
of the field and see the Dodgers as a Goliath.
What about when Dave Roberts was asked, do you see
this World Series as a David versus Goliath situation?
Speaker 12 (45:15):
Or David? I mean, hey, they're from the East and
that's the al East. Yeah, you know what we got.
We got really good players. They got really good players.
So the great thing about baseball is anything can happen.
This is a it's going to be a great series.
These guys are on a high right now, so we're
(45:37):
expecting a battle, and so we certainly don't see it
that way.
Speaker 3 (45:43):
Game one of the World Series at Rogers Center from Toronto,
seven o'clock tonight, Trey Ya Savage against Blake Snell. And
among many millions of baseball fans tuning in to watch
that one is probably.
Speaker 4 (45:56):
One Craig Way who is ready to join us.
Speaker 3 (45:59):
Via will get his thoughts as he travels to Starkville
right here on The Craigway Show Sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred the Zone and always free on the iHeartRadio app
Back in a moment.
Speaker 11 (46:11):
I've been everywhere, man, I've been everywhere, Man.
Speaker 4 (46:15):
Bronston deserts bear Man, I.
Speaker 2 (46:17):
Read the mountain there.
Speaker 9 (46:19):
Man, we're fat.
Speaker 8 (46:20):
It's The Craigway Show with Hall of Fame broadcaster and
voice of the Texas Longhearts Craig Way.
Speaker 13 (46:30):
Hol on the Tambabanama Mada Bloma Bangabon.
Speaker 3 (46:37):
Well, he hasn't quite been everywhere, but he must be
getting pretty darn close. Craig Way, voice of the Longhorns
and the host of this program, on the line with
us here on this Friday afternoon. And Craig, I understand
you've already had to h to call an audible today
on your way to Mississippi.
Speaker 13 (46:57):
Maybe it was from learning hard lessons from the first
trip of the year when we went to Columbus. Jake,
and of course folks may remember what happened to that
are we were supposed to go up through Chicago then
connect to flying the Columbus, and the original flight to
Chicago ended up getting canceled. We were eight and so
(47:17):
and there were no because of all the fans traveling
in there would be no way we could get to Columbus.
We were able to get and by we I mean
Roger Wallis and Will Matthews, my broadcast partners. We were
able to get as far as a hare in Chicago
and then drive seven hours. Well, it was looking like
we might have a similar situation because our flight from
Austin up to DFW and then connecting there to go
(47:40):
to Tupelo. But the flight from Austin the DFW was delayed.
When I first went through security. The flight was scheduled
for two eighteen and it said had been bumped to
two twenty five.
Speaker 4 (47:53):
Didn't really think.
Speaker 13 (47:53):
Much about that. By the time I got through TSA
security and started to walk back toward the gate, I'll
look up and it said three o'clock and I thought
that doesn't sound good. And then I saw there was
a flight leaving an hour earlier, like at one eighteen.
So I went up to the gate agent said hey,
can I go stand and see?
Speaker 5 (48:13):
Look?
Speaker 13 (48:13):
So, yeah, we got we got a seat where so
immediately texted Roger and Will and said, if you guys
are in the terminal, get the gate twenty six and
see if you stand by. Well, Roger was one gate down,
so it was no problem. He got right in, but
the lady told him the gate agent that well you
get the last seat. So he texted us that and
Will goes that's the last seat, and I said, Will
(48:35):
go to the gate anyway, there may be a no show.
Speaker 2 (48:38):
So he went to the gate and.
Speaker 5 (48:40):
He got the last seat.
Speaker 13 (48:43):
And the reason why I know this and it was
a no show is because they put him up near
the front of the plane where a note.
Speaker 5 (48:50):
Back back.
Speaker 13 (48:52):
But he got on and we're here and we're on
time for the moment, and of course we'll see all
the connecting flight UH sets up to go to Tupelo
on a commuter airline. And by the way, with with
all all due reverence to the late twenty cash, I
haven't been everywhere, and that includes Tupelo. It'll be thet
(49:13):
I've been through it. I've driven around it or something,
but I've never stayed in it, which is where the
team will be headquartered tonight.
Speaker 3 (49:20):
Well, now that now that you're going to be on
the way to Tupelo, shoot, I don't know how much
sight seeing you're going to do with the Big World
Series game on tonight. We previewed it in the last segment.
What's your plan to watch Game one?
Speaker 13 (49:33):
Just like I did last Friday night, elect from the hotel,
I mean land enough time to where we can get
to the hotel and you know whatever, and maybe i'll
door dash it or something I don't know.
Speaker 2 (49:52):
From the hotel.
Speaker 13 (49:53):
That's what I did last week.
Speaker 9 (49:54):
So I'm i'm I'll plan on.
Speaker 13 (49:55):
Doing it again tonight.
Speaker 3 (49:57):
So Craig, I know obviously that your board's you are
already laminated, ready to go. Your spotting boards of course
to call the game. So with all the prep work
kind of done, how do you like to spend a
flight on the way to a long ward football game
like this?
Speaker 13 (50:11):
I think it depends on how the week has gone.
This week hasn't been too bad. It's been a little
bit busy, and of course we had the women's basketball
game last night, the exhibition game, so I feel a
little tired, but not too bad. I'll probably just.
Speaker 2 (50:25):
A little bit.
Speaker 13 (50:25):
But I'm a big reader, and I've got a book
in my backpack and I'll read on the plane. Sometimes,
depending on the flight and where you're coming from, I
will watch something like last week when I came back
from Lexington, we had to go through Charlotte and then
I was obviously watching the game from London. I was
(50:47):
watching the Rams and the Jaguars on the flight back.
So I'll do that too. It just depends on what's
going on the degree of fatigue I might be feeling
during the week. Feel pretty very fred right now, not
too bad. I mean, the snooze a little bit on
the plane. Also, it depends on the plane, Jake. You know,
if it's a comfortable jet, it's probably a little bit
(51:10):
easier to sleep.
Speaker 2 (51:11):
This is going to be one of those pencil.
Speaker 13 (51:13):
Thin puddle jumpers, So you know, we'll see how it
behaves as we go, if we get some turbulents or
anything like that. But that's what the book's for. I
can always read and in those.
Speaker 3 (51:24):
Kind of environments, pencil thin puddle jumpers. I think that
might be the band playing at the local Starfield bar
out there tonight.
Speaker 4 (51:31):
I don't know if you have time to go check them.
Speaker 3 (51:33):
Out, but as you get ready for this game for Texas,
right it's the offense, Craig that's on a lot of
the fans minds. I brought it up with Cameron earlier.
Some of the stats from last week definitely aren't pretty.
If we see some adjustments from Sark this week, like
he's hinted at in his media availabilities, what might those
(51:53):
look like and what kind.
Speaker 4 (51:54):
Of keys do you have for Texas on that side
of the ball.
Speaker 13 (51:57):
Well, I definitely want to do a better job of
run in the football of that, and that's no secret
everybody knows. And getting CJ. Baxter in the lineup and
back on the field helps for sure. You know the
old thing about run to set up the pass, and
Sarka has been pretty plain spoken about He said, they
can't just wind up and just start letting it rip,
(52:18):
you know, and just throwing it all over the field.
The teams won't respect to run that way, and it'll
be even more difficult for arch Manning to do the
things that he needs to move the team forward. So
run the ball, and they've got to get better. If
they're able to do that, then then I think it
doesn't set up the pass game and make it that
(52:39):
much more dangerous. So I think there's going to be
much more of a concerted effort to run the ball
and to be more physical upfront with the offensive line
as well as what they do with the defensive in
trying to contain Mississippi State's game, which is also to
run the football, even though they'll spread the field out
and use some wider eye offensive splits and throw out
(53:01):
of that, but their design is still to run first
and pass second.
Speaker 4 (53:06):
Yeah, And back to that note on the running game.
With CJ.
Speaker 3 (53:10):
Baxter likely to be back into the fold in some
sort of capacity this week, might he open up things
in the passing game with his receiving skills. He had
five catches in that season opener at Ohio State.
Speaker 13 (53:23):
Yeah, he can catch the ball on the back field.
Of course, you know what they're really missing and what
they have been missing by not having CJ. Is that
really good running between the tackles. You know, quin Travian
Weisner can do it. Trey does run between the tackles sometime,
but he is really good in the passing game and
flexing him out of the backfield, So yeah, they could
(53:44):
use it there. I think they want to have a
concerted effort to run the ball better between the tackles
with Baxter and then open it up the screen game
either to Baster or to Wisner. As those two guys
will alternate, and there will be some I think we'll
see some formations where they're both out there insteat of
a two tight end set. We may only see. You
may see twelve personnel or excuse me, twenty one personnel
(54:06):
with just two backs and one tight end. So I
think there's a decent chance we may see some of
that as well.
Speaker 3 (54:13):
Now you mentioned Mississippi State's offensive approaches. They want to
establish the run to set up the pass, but they're
not afraid to spread you out and take some vertical
shots either and for a Texas defense that's down Michael Taff.
How big of a concern is that against a true
spread system like this, Well, and.
Speaker 13 (54:33):
This offense, as Sark has described, really and truly is
almost the pure derivative of the Art Briles offensive concept,
which is to have big, wide splits along the offensive front.
You spread your receivers out, you have the screen game,
you have the slant game, but you run the football.
It's a power spread. It truly is a power spread.
(54:56):
And I think that's what Mississippi State likes to do.
And the reason why I say the Art Riles offense obviously,
the guy who's the head coach Mississippi State his Art's
son in law, Jeff Levy and and and Jeff's so
West Texas kid. I knew his dad, but his dad
was coaching at Andrews high Way out in West Texas
back in the day, and they were more committed to
(55:16):
running the football. And Jeff himself as a former offensive lineman,
he was a he was a good offensive lineman in
Oklahoma until he had a knee injury. So you know,
they they want to run to definitely set up the pass,
but they can spread out and if you do try
to clog the gaps too much, they hit you with
clinton quick slants and in the slant and quick game,
and that's where they can dash you a defense. And
(55:38):
to your part about not having Michael Tapp.
Speaker 2 (55:41):
It's true.
Speaker 13 (55:41):
He's he'll travel with the team and they'll be there
because he is a source of guidance, leadership, and inspiration. Fortunately,
the guys who are having a step in and play
more snaps are guys who were veterans who played a
lot of snaps. Derek Williams was a starter at safety
last year until a knee injury. And Vanderbilt and they
you know, they had they have other guys that they
can roll in and rotate out as safeties. And it's
(56:05):
a chance for Julini McDonald really to step up his
game in the secondary. Grayson Lyttleton, the freshman, Jordan Johnson
Rebell JJR as they call him. They've got several different
guys that they can plug into that safety slash star position,
whether they're talking about the safety or the starback. They've
got bodies. It's just, you know, Taft's leadership on the
(56:26):
field is something that'll be missed, but he'll be with
him in the leadership, in the in the locker room,
and it's the team hotel and around the group. That
part will still.
Speaker 3 (56:35):
Be there the second straight week, Craig, that Texas faces
an opponent looking for its first SEC victory. But you know,
you look a little closer at this Mississippi State schedule.
You had the overtime loss to Tennessee they led in
the fourth quarter, then a game at Kyle Field that
was close until their defense got hung out to dry late,
(56:55):
and then the Florida game where there perhaps one late
interception away from victory. Am I right in saying what
I think a lot of Texas fans are thinking? That
Mississippi State's much much better than that oh and three
sec Mark.
Speaker 13 (57:09):
Yeah, I think there are a couple of plays away
from being six and one and being two in one
in the sec instead of being on and three. I
think there's just a couple of snaps away from that.
But the mistakes had hurt them. You're right about the Texas.
Speaker 2 (57:22):
A and M game.
Speaker 13 (57:23):
That's a ninety seven game in the third quarter before
the Aggies just started to wear them out after that.
But the Tennessee game was an overtime game. They had
an opportunity, and that was at home, and then of
course at Florida they had a chance to win, but
for the late interception. Now, the one thing we know
is Jeff Levy said it in his news conference this week. Yeah,
the interception is what everybody remembers clearly because that was
(57:45):
the final straw. But he looked back to three earlier
possessions where they had the ball in Florida territory and
came away with nothing, and then a field goal and
then nothing, I think, and he said, and those are
the ones that you look back on after the game
and think, boy, I could have just done something different there,
we could have won. I think Texas looks at it
similarly with some of the games they've had about possessions
(58:06):
where had they done A then B, you know, the
result is a little bit different. So you're right, they're
better than what four and three would be. They own
a win over Arizona State, who just of course knocked
off Texas Tech. So yeah, this is a tough team
to play and going into another difficult road environment. And
of course this is the end of the traveling month
(58:27):
of October, where every game has been played away from
DK r Texas Memorial Stadium.
Speaker 4 (58:34):
Yeah, I know.
Speaker 3 (58:34):
Coach Sark was asked if he's had a stretch in
his career like this, playing this many games in a
row away from home. He compared it to a three
game stretch he had with the Atlanta Falcons back when
he was serving as their OC What about you, Craig,
as a broadcaster, have you had a stretch like this?
Speaker 13 (58:50):
No, not four in a row. They have been free,
including the Texas OU game a couple of times, but
it's the first time for an entire months I think
that I can remember in the thirty eight years have
been on the network, you know, the thirty four years
in the broadcast booth, that every single game for an
(59:13):
entire month was away from home. I understand the mass
and the way the guidance works on the scheduling there.
Because Texas was the designated home team against Oklahoma, so
technically it counts as a home game, but we all
know better. Obviously, they play Dallas on the air grounds
and it's a completely different environment with the stadium split
(59:34):
in half, so it's not a home game. It's a
half and half game. But they were the designated home team.
That's why it's set up like that, but this is
indeed a first time for four consecutive weeks to be
on the road.
Speaker 3 (59:47):
Well, Craig, I know you're currently at an airport and
before they call your boarding group, I've got one more
question for you. We've talked a lot about the cow
bells this week. I of course have reminded our listeners
they can submit their cow bell contest saw via the
talk back feature. And with all this talk about Texas
being prepared for the cow bells, as a broadcaster, do.
Speaker 4 (01:00:06):
You have to think about that? Are you prepared for
the cow bells?
Speaker 13 (01:00:10):
Well, I'm talking to Neil Price, and of course we
had him on the show this week, but in visiting m'neil,
he said, it's you know, it's omni president.
Speaker 9 (01:00:17):
Obviously you hear it, but.
Speaker 13 (01:00:19):
It's not it's not so obtrusive that you can't do
your job, you know, And and uh, that's that's the
thing is does it get in the way of performing
the duties that that you're you know, assigned to perform,
and that's calling the play? And he said, it's not
that oppressive in terms of drafting the out. So you
(01:00:40):
can't even hear yourself Plus we have an outstanding engineer
in Greg Clinton Smith who can fil throughout different themes
and you know, stuff like that. So I think I
think it'll be all right. I'm looking forward to the environment.
Sark says it's a great environment. He was there with
Alabama when he was on Nick State Saban staff. He says,
it's one of those fun environments on the road in
college football, and he wants his team to embrace them
moment as well.
Speaker 3 (01:01:00):
So who am I to argue, Well, Craig, we'll hear
that conversation you had with start coming up. But I
want to let you get in line, grab your snacks
and get comfortable on what'd you call it? That pencil
fit puddle hopper of a plane and you're about to board.
Speaker 13 (01:01:15):
That's it. It's a thirty seat regional.
Speaker 9 (01:01:21):
Chit is what it is.
Speaker 13 (01:01:23):
But the nice thing about it is it'll fly right
in the two Flow where the team hotel is, which
is about an hour north of Stargill. We ran into
our good friends Kirk Bowles, Cedric Golden, and Danny Davis.
Kirk of course now with the Houston Chronicles said, and
Danny with the Austin American States and they were on
the same flight with us from Austin up to the
DFW the air flying to Jackson, and so they were
(01:01:44):
on a different connecting flight going to Jackson. Then they
have about a two and a half hour drive after that,
so at least we're close once we land, you know,
and swing by see Elvis's birthplace and then get the
hotel watchball game tonight.
Speaker 4 (01:01:56):
How about that.
Speaker 3 (01:01:57):
Hopefully no heartbreak at the hotel later, Craig, appreciate you
joining us. Have a safe flight. Tell the rest of
the crew, I said, travel safely and hello.
Speaker 13 (01:02:06):
Thanks for stepping in today, Jake, appreciate it. And by
the way, we will announce that winner of that cow
bell contest all Monday, and we were back through and
choose the winner of the weekend, and we will announce
that winner on Monday afternoons show where we award the
two tickets to next Saturday, Texas Vanderbilt.
Speaker 3 (01:02:23):
Kame and Craig, your show starts with the pregame at two.
Of course, our show on thirteen hundred Zone starts earlier
than that with third and Longhorn at eleven Longhorn Game
Day at noon. Travel safe, Craig, thank you, Jake all right,
appreciate Craig Way taking the time out of his travel
schedule to join us up Next, we'll hear his conversation
(01:02:44):
with Coach Sark from Longhorn Weekly last night right here
on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone.
Speaker 5 (01:02:50):
See sun Jump on the Line.
Speaker 3 (01:02:54):
Ball Ah Yes, Lightning Bolts gonna fire me up Friday
special thanks to Craig Way making time for you at
DMW on his way to two below Mississippi for the
Call of Texas and Mississippi State, which kicks at three
point fifteen on Saturday afternoon. So we mentioned Coach Sark
(01:03:21):
and his sit down with Craig every week on Longhorn Weekly.
It aired a little bit early last night at six
o'clock rather than its usual seven pm slot on Thursdays
here on AM thirteen hundred Zone, and we'll reair tonight
at seven pm as well. But in case you tuned
in at the normal time last night, maybe you missed
it and heard the tip off of Texas Women's basketball's
(01:03:43):
exhibition victory over Love at Christian Instead. Here is a
sneak peek a preview of Longhorn Weekly, part of the
show where Coach Sark shares his thoughts on going to
Starkville and watching Mississippi State on film.
Speaker 4 (01:04:00):
Take a listen.
Speaker 1 (01:04:01):
The Mississippi State Bulldogs up next a game in start.
Speaker 2 (01:04:05):
You've been in a Starkville before, haven't you.
Speaker 14 (01:04:07):
Yes, I thought, as a member of the Alabama staff
put coach there one time.
Speaker 1 (01:04:10):
And uh, you know, we had all of the conversations
about the cow bells, and like you said, you know,
the team's been practicing with that this.
Speaker 14 (01:04:19):
Week, right, Yeah, we've had the cow bells going, and uh,
to your point, I don't know if it's the loudest place,
but those cowbells are going all game long. There's one
other thing about their stadium. They have the nicest grass
in the country.
Speaker 12 (01:04:34):
Really.
Speaker 2 (01:04:35):
I remember the first time we went.
Speaker 14 (01:04:36):
We're at Alabama and we were getting ready to play,
and the entire time I'm watching film, I literally thought
it was tough. That's how pristine the grass was. And
then you have to when you show up to the stadium,
you have to walk across the field to get to
the locker room.
Speaker 2 (01:04:49):
Right, I started walking and looked down. This is real grass.
I mean, I couldn't believe it was immaculate. It is immaculate.
Speaker 14 (01:04:55):
So looking forward to the grass and the smell of
the grass here Saturday afternoon.
Speaker 1 (01:04:59):
Absolutely this this Bulldog team is four and three, and
it's a team that's been so close to being six
and one with the games obviously against Tennessee and the
game with Florida last week. And it goes back to
what we were saying earlier, how Jeff Levy's trying to
build that culture where they can learn how to win
games like that.
Speaker 14 (01:05:17):
Well, I think that's the key, and I credit coach Levy.
He's a he's a good friend of mine. He's done
a great job at Missippi State. What he inherited two
years ago to where they were last year to where
they are now, he's done a tremendous job. They've you know,
you can feel his you know. On offense, it's his
style of offense. Now, they've got elite speed on the perimeter.
They've got a quarterback who can distribute the ball. They
(01:05:39):
spread you out with the wide splits and then they're
they're gonna run it and pound you up inside. Defensively,
it's a very aggressive style of defense, innovative in a
sense of they play a lot of players, a lot
of different style of coverages. And these guys, to your point,
they were a couple of plays away. I mean they're
they're in overtime against Tennessee. They have the ball, the
(01:06:01):
kick a field goal to beat Florida, and really the
A and M game, I mean that game is laid
into the third quarter.
Speaker 2 (01:06:07):
It's a tight game. So this is a.
Speaker 14 (01:06:09):
Very good football team, very tough place to play. It's
gonna be a good challenge for us.
Speaker 2 (01:06:14):
Is Blake shape?
Speaker 1 (01:06:15):
And I guess the better questions how advanced is Blake shape?
And from the quarterback who's at Baylor four years.
Speaker 14 (01:06:21):
Well, I think it's night and day right from where
he was, you know, playing here, you know, four three,
four years ago to where he is today. I think
this system helps him being with coach Levy, you know,
every quarterbacks kind of fits to what they are and
what they were at Baylor then with a lot of
wide zone play action pass stuff. Now getting a little
more spread out, getting the ball of his hands quickly.
(01:06:42):
Is a very accurate passer that that I think, Yeah,
it fits more of kind of who he is now.
Speaker 1 (01:06:48):
Fluff bothwell, the running back was hurt last week, but
they think he'll be okay, as well as Devon Booth.
They use several different guys.
Speaker 4 (01:06:55):
They really do.
Speaker 14 (01:06:56):
And and again that they they tax you in the
run game because they take the really wide splits at
receiver and you'll see that Saturday, the receivers are split
very wide. Similar to go back to Coach Levy's pass
with coach Bryles at Baylor when he was back there
with him. So back to the big splits, back to
the vertical passing game. And then they get you to
deploy people out of the box and they have two
(01:07:17):
really good physical runners that they hit you with up inside.
Speaker 3 (01:07:20):
So the thoughts of Steve Sarkesian ahead of Texas's matchup
with Mississippi State to the text line before we wrap
up this second hour of the program, Seapowell says, like
to follow all Longhorns sports Football's number one, but any
word on the softball exhibition last Friday with A and
M like to know. Can't find any info, Thanks, Seapow.
I saw your text, did some digging, and it was
(01:07:43):
hard to find some info on this exhibition. But what
I did find for you was a graphic tweet to
buy Texas Softball that the Horns won the exhibition by
a score of four to nothing, holding Texas A and
M to three hits. Longhorns four runs, five hits, no
errors during that scrimmage for admission and a great crowd
on hand at Macombs Field and some of the regulars
(01:08:06):
out of the starting lineup for the Texas Longhorns as
they try and just learn a little bit more about
their team in one of five fall scrimmages on the slate.
They're playing tonight at Macombs Field against Our Lady of
the Lake, a seven inning game at six pm at
Macombs Field.
Speaker 4 (01:08:23):
Free admission.
Speaker 3 (01:08:24):
So if you want to go check out Texas softball
for yourself, well, there.
Speaker 2 (01:08:28):
You have it.
Speaker 3 (01:08:28):
We'll wrap up hour number two right here on sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred the Zone as the Craigway Show
rolls along. Back here for the final hour of The
craig Ways Show this week. Jake Grban, the producer of
this program, filling him for Craig as he travels to Mississippi,
(01:08:50):
but the Longhorns take it on Mississippi State. Another SEC
road test tomorrow afternoon. We'll get to the rest of
the SEC slate, but one hit some NFL notes before
we transition to high school football. Football filled third and
final hour of this program today and last night, the
(01:09:10):
Chargers well shove the Vikings in a locker thirty seven
to ten. Score could have been a little worse than that,
the Chargers settling for some late field goals. And I
think it's time for me to admit I was wrong
about Minnesota this year. There was always a chance of
regression with the games they were able to win a
(01:09:30):
year ago. I have still have the utmost face, utmost
faith in the tandem of Kevin O'Connell and Brian Flores,
the offensive and defensive mastermind as the head coach and
the DC to make this Vikings team a playoff contender.
Speaker 4 (01:09:45):
But the NFC North is tough.
Speaker 3 (01:09:47):
The Vikings currently in last place now at three and four,
and it's started to become apparent that this quarterback situation's
a bit of a problem for them. Carson Wentz last night,
fifteen of twenty seven, just the one touchdown, one interception,
a few more near interceptions. I think it was Ryan
Fitzpatrick that put it on the pregame show. He's gonna
(01:10:07):
have five or six plays tonight, Carson Wentz that are
going to make you hold your breath and squint and
look away. Chargers defense that's without a couple of their
key pass rushers, really took Minnesota's lunch and the Chargers,
who have had to sort of rebrand themselves a little
bit the last few weeks with the absence of Joe alt. Remember,
(01:10:29):
they already lost their all Pro tackle Rashaan Slater for
the season, an injury that I, along with many other
people said was really going to limit their Super Bowl
upside this season. They got Joe Allt back last night,
who wasn't even all that great in the game, but
the Chargers were able to run the ball a lot better.
Gamescript determined some of that, but Kamani Vidal, their third
(01:10:54):
their third string runner really fort string if you think
Hassan Haskins had that role before his injury.
Speaker 4 (01:11:00):
Rumbled for one hundred and seventeen on the ground.
Speaker 3 (01:11:03):
Lad mcconkee and the rookie tight end Aronde Gadsden joining
forces with Keenan Allen. Each of them had big nights
through the air. Rookie Tray Harris got his first touchdown.
The Chargers are really letting Justin Herbert air it out
a little bit more this season. And getting some pretty
good results because of it. Now they lost last week
(01:11:23):
to the Colts thirty eight to twenty four in a shootout,
and that's gonna happen Indianapolis seems to be pretty dang legit.
And two weeks ago the Chargers after skating by the Dolphins,
coming off back to back losses to the Commanders and Giants.
That was pretty low on this team. But that's the
nature of the NFL. I mean, any given team, any
(01:11:44):
given week can win. The Chargers are at the Titans
next week, before you know what, they could be looking
at six and three before hosting the Steelers, then going
at the Jags. That Steelers Jag stretch will define the
Chargers season. They've got to rack up some wins there
because after that they get the Raiders. But then it's Eagles,
Chiefs at Cowboys versus Texans at Broncos to close the season.
(01:12:07):
They're gonna have to get some hay in the bar
and so to speak, to give themselves a little bit
of margin for error coming into these division games. But
one thing struck me during the broadcast last night. I
don't know if you picked up on this. During a
play in which the Chargers picked up a first down
justin Herbert. The Vikings picked up a first down justin
Jefferson was sent tumbling out of mountains into the Viking bench.
(01:12:31):
He was going towards the chain. The chain gang got
out of the way, and then he was going right.
Speaker 4 (01:12:37):
Towards the feet.
Speaker 3 (01:12:38):
Dare I say ankles of a very important member of
the Minnesota Vikings, and that is second year quarterback, really
a rookie in terms of experience, JJ McCarthy, who is
supposedly on the sideline with an ankle injury that's held
him out since the first couple weeks of the season.
He hurdled over Jefferson emphatically celebrated first down like his
(01:13:00):
ankle was bugging him. So clearly there's something going on
with JJ McCarthy behind the scenes. I think a lot
of people suspected this already. This ankle injury was kind
of like a courtesy I Elston right for an MLB
pitcher that might be struggling, because there have been moments
during JJ McCarthy's first couple of games, particularly that Falcons
game in Week two, where he really really struggled. There
(01:13:22):
have been moments where he hasn't looked ready for an
NFL starting role, but now after the Carson Wentz magical
mystery tour has ground to a halt in this loss
pretty embarrassing fashion to the Chargers thirty seven to ten
games with the Lions and Ravens and Bears and Packers
(01:13:42):
and Seahawks looming, Minnesota's got to make a choice at quarterback,
and I'm very curious if we will see JJ McCarthy again.
If we don't, that really makes you wonder what kind
of state that ankle is truly and or what kind
of state McCarthy is truly in mentally at the moment,
because Carson Wentz does not see him be playing at
(01:14:03):
a level that would make Minnesota a playoff team or
elevate a great group of playmakers around. And they have
Jordan Addison's very underrated speedy receiver scored a touchdown last night.
And they have Justin Jefferson, who is somewhere in that
top three receiver group in the NFL. However, you slot
in those guys Jamar Chase, Justin Jefferson, and then a
guy like Ceedee Lamb or Poka Nakua knocking on the
(01:14:25):
door as well. Mentioned Ceedee Lamb speaking of the Cowboys,
Jerry Jones sounding off on one oh five three to
the Fan today and his Cowboys take on the Denver
Broncos at Mile High Stadium this weekend at three three
and one. Dallas a chance to sort of back up
their big victory over the Commanders, searching for some form
(01:14:46):
of consistency after what's been really up and down season
for Dallas, particularly on the defensive side of the ball.
Jerry Jones was asked ahead of this matchup with Denver
and Sean Payton, did you think Sean Peyton would ever
be your head coach? And this comes way back during
you know, before Sean Peyton took the job with New Orleans. Obviously,
(01:15:09):
the Cowboys very happy with Brian Schottenneimer at the moment,
but they've had their fair share of coaching turnover in
recent years. Did Sean Did Jerry Jones ever think Sean
Peyton would coach America's team?
Speaker 5 (01:15:22):
Several times and it just never fit. He was never
there when we needed to be thinking about making a change,
and it just the timing never fit. And so he's
certainly one of the better coaches that I've been around
in my career. And we've always had a tremendous respect
(01:15:46):
for his ability to coach a team in every respect.
And I thought before he ever was a head coach
that it probably would happen here, and turned out he
took that New Orleans job and rested history. So now
there's no coach that we're thinking it more, respecting it
(01:16:06):
more than we do.
Speaker 3 (01:16:07):
Sean Pagon, And there's been a certain amount of trade
buzz around the Dallas Cowboys, a defense that we'll get
to marve and overshown back this week. He was a
guest on Longhorn Weekly a couple of weeks back. Brings
a great energy guy that when Brad Sham, the voice
of the Cowboys, was on this program earlier in the week,
said it doesn't matter that he's only in his second
year as a pro. When he leads, the rest of
(01:16:30):
that Cowboys defense will follow. But given the way the
Cowboys defense has struggled, there's been some smoke created in
some part by Jerry Jones about adding pieces, picking up
the phone and bringing in help at the upcoming deadline.
So he was asked today, would you add pieces only
(01:16:50):
if you think this team is a Super Bowl contender?
Speaker 5 (01:16:54):
Well, I would add, I would add a player on
that premise the words, I do think this team has
a chance to be in competition and so under that criteria,
and that's a good way, and that's all the reason
in the world to have your alert side up. So
(01:17:15):
in that case I am. I do have my eyes
open and interest level up.
Speaker 3 (01:17:23):
And Jerry Jones, ever, the entertainer, was asked, how much
do you love just the general vibe of trade buzz
today versus maybe the way the league looked a decade
ago when trades just weren't as common, and by comparison,
they're still not as common in the NFL as other
pro sports.
Speaker 5 (01:17:40):
I love it. It's tremendous for the sport. Any time
that you can add an element of what goes on
to ultimately score a touchdown, win a game, or a championship,
any and all part of that, I thought, not to
all fans, but to a lot of fans can be
(01:18:01):
interesting and entertaining. Uh. You know, the reason that I
got involved in sports and got involved with the Cowboys
the way I did when I was forty six is
because I was. I was so involved in every aspect
of it. I love the thought of spending my days
involved in that. There's a little of me that thinks
(01:18:23):
there's some of that and so many people, and so
I'm all for putting every aspect of it out here
and have our fans involved in it. I've always referred
back to it. That's why we were the first team
ever to put a camera to the fans in the
draft room. And there are have As it turns out,
they're just literally ump team ways to get fads invobbed.
(01:18:48):
Good for some. Some wouldn't even look past the newspaper
to glass at it. Others would hang their hat on it.
That's what makes this so great.
Speaker 3 (01:18:58):
Well ninety eight one cavents where you can hear the
Cowboys and the Broncos in a game that who knows
if the Cowboys win. You just heard it from Jerry Jones,
President general manager. They might look to add a few
more pieces on the defense in front head they got
to first for Micah Parsons. Might they spend those to
bring in a Max Crosby type.
Speaker 4 (01:19:17):
We'll see.
Speaker 3 (01:19:17):
We'll see if any big defensive names like that move
with the deadline. San Francisco could be looking for defense
giving their Fred Warner injury and Joey Bosa down as well.
They visit NRG Stadium in Houston, where the Texans host
the Niners at noon on Sunday. You can hear that
game here on AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Other matchups
(01:19:39):
that catch my eye looking at this later rematch between
the Giants and the Eagles. After that Thursday night upset,
the Giants pulled sort of a big breakout game for
Jackson Dark Camp Scataboo a couple of weeks ago, and
outside of Dallas at Denver. You got a good one
on Sunday night, Green Bay at Pittsburgh with Jordan Love
and the pack taking on Aaron Rodgers, who said this
(01:20:02):
week it doesn't matter if it's a one day contract,
he'll retire as a Packer. Well, Pittsburgh trying to bounce
back in a big way from that loss to the
Bengals and the Icy Hot Bowl. We recap for you
last Friday, that loss to Joe Flacco in that battle
of forty plus year old QB.
Speaker 4 (01:20:20):
So from the oldest qbs.
Speaker 3 (01:20:21):
Into the NFL to some of the brightest young QB
prospects in the Austin area. We transition to high school
football next e J. Sanchez from Texan Live is going
to join us. We're going to hand out some mid
season superlatives and take you a game by game through
some of the marquee matchups around Austin tonight. This is
the Greig Wave Show on Sports Radio A I'm thirteen
hundred Zone. Our show rolls on on this Friday afternoon.
(01:20:48):
Jay Rbman with you in for Craig today and happy
to welcome a special guest back to the show, coming
to us all the way from San Antonio this afternoon,
e J.
Speaker 4 (01:20:58):
Sanchez.
Speaker 3 (01:20:59):
Thanks for thanks for taking some time out of your
busy water polo schedule.
Speaker 4 (01:21:03):
Am I hearing that right today?
Speaker 7 (01:21:05):
Water polo today and tomorrow? Jake Division one women's soccer yesterday,
Division one volleyball the day before. There's really nothing that
I'm not doing right now, but anytime my boy gets
me on the horn, you know I have to make
some time.
Speaker 3 (01:21:17):
Well, if you don't know EJ, you definitely don't spend
a lot of time watching high school football in the area.
EJ with Texan Live is very plugged in, and so
as we get to the business end of district play, EJ.
I thought we'd hand out some mid to late season
superlatives and then obviously get to tonight's slate, which is
jam pack with amazing games.
Speaker 4 (01:21:37):
Sound good to you?
Speaker 7 (01:21:39):
That sounds good to me.
Speaker 9 (01:21:40):
Man, Let's roll well.
Speaker 3 (01:21:41):
So, starting with superlatives, just among the area high school
football teams, is there a group or a storyline that's
stuck out as the biggest surprise to you?
Speaker 7 (01:21:52):
Maybe surprise is only to the rest of us outsiders,
maybe not to the kids in that locker room or
in the program. I'm gonna go with the Hippos of Huddo. Okay,
And there's a couple of reasons why I said that.
I prefaced it by saying that Eli Ryan Harp, for
those that don't know, the offensive coordinator from six eight
Division one state champion North Crowley last year, he gets
his opportunity to go be a head.
Speaker 2 (01:22:13):
Coach at Huddo.
Speaker 7 (01:22:14):
Now, Jake, you and I are both from the area.
Speaker 9 (01:22:16):
I mean, we've seen it.
Speaker 7 (01:22:17):
Huddle always has good offensive players, Okay, but this is
a Huddle team that did not qualify where they would
want to last year, and all of a sudden, when
you add in Eli Ryan hart system, now they're sitting
on a collision course for potentially a district tait I,
we're going to talk about hudd in a little bit.
I'm gonna spoil that, but this is a team that
was three and five industry, They didn't qualify for the
(01:22:39):
playoffs last year, and now they only sit with one
loss undefeated, taking on vand a Grip tonight. And before
you say, is that a new cast of characters, it's
really not. You have Cayden Stephfick back at quarterback. You
have Keelan Shav's also back as your running back. So
you return your top three rushers your quarterback, and you
return your topper receivers for him a year ago. So
(01:23:02):
Huddo is a surprise in the sense that you know
you flipped the record and maybe you didn't know what
you were getting. First time head coaches, there's always that pause.
But I really like what Eli Ryan Hard is doing
and it's gonna be fun coming down the stretch of
that district. We talked about it already, I think the
last time I was on, but when you're talking about
District twenty five six A, it's a lot of wonkiness
(01:23:24):
going on. I'm excited to see how.
Speaker 2 (01:23:26):
It in Bolds.
Speaker 3 (01:23:27):
Yeah, so much parody to be had there at Huddo
off a four and six year in twenty twenty four,
now sitting there with everything in front of them, I
had the Hippos for our next category, so we can
jump there and I don't know what kind of award
show I'm running over here at the station, but it's
a little bit of overlap. The biggest jump from last
year to now. I had the Hippos. Did you have
(01:23:48):
another team in mind for that category?
Speaker 7 (01:23:52):
You know what I was gonna go with here, Jake.
We love five A and six D football, right, That's
that's where the big dogs are. Okay, Can I take
you out into the country a little bit and talk
about the Jerald Cougars and the Toledo Eagles for a
second like that kind of show?
Speaker 4 (01:24:08):
Gladly, I'm I'm buckled up.
Speaker 7 (01:24:12):
So here's the thing about those two teams, Jake, is
that Jerald is the one I'm gonna talk about. Okay,
they have a big matchup coming up tonight and Gerald
once again just was two and four last year in
district play. And you love the rescheduling of teams really
because you get to see him from a year to
year basis where you line up and people really started
(01:24:35):
taking Gerald seriously when they won. We're into twenty nine
in week four over the Lanto Yellow Jackets, and that
is the Atlanto team that is always consistently head against
second or third round of the playoffs, and Gerald really
took care of them and their running back Walker. He's
been tremendous. And so when you go down to the
lower levels of four A, three A, four A, that's
(01:24:57):
where you can get some stories like that. And I'm
looking forward to how and shakes out with Slado. But
Jerald being a team now that we have to respect
in Foura, I think is just gonna make things more interesting,
especially when you're looking for Austin Area representatives deep into
the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (01:25:13):
Yeah, and Slato a team that's that's kind of been
steady as well, coming off of that Area final appearance
a year ago. So is there a team that maybe
took the field way back I want you to think
way back to late August, early September and you thought, Okay,
you know that's what they look like, and now that's
completely different.
Speaker 4 (01:25:33):
Maybe an in season Most Improved Award.
Speaker 7 (01:25:36):
When the last point I was on Jake, you and
I speculated about one of the area powers, and that's
Round Rock. Okay, so I'm gonna go with the dragons here.
And because everybody was panicking about the start that Round
Rock got off to, and I cautioned you at the time,
I will toot my own horn because you called me,
so I get to do that. Yeah, I told people, guys,
(01:25:59):
don't worry about out Round Rock because at that time
they had played Gleen Shoemaker, they had played Temple, and
at that time they had played you know, some of
the teams in their district that were ranting atop. Now
they're back into it. They're firmly back in the playoff picture,
and courset off. Hats off to that entire program because
maybe they knew how good teams they were playing, but
(01:26:21):
they also thought they were a good team, and they
were able to shake it off and they were able
to bounce back and put themselves right now in that
playoff race. They're sitting at second right now at twenty
five six A and they're six and two in district played.
They're gonna have a chance for the share of a
district title coming down the stretch.
Speaker 3 (01:26:37):
Yeah, and Round Rock idol this week with Stony Point
and Van griff to finish off that schedule. We're gonna
get to all those teams in a minute. But what
about some individuals that have stuck out to you? And
there are so many options to choose from. I don't
think there's a whole lot of wrong answers that you
could throw out here if you just.
Speaker 4 (01:26:56):
Pick somebody who's lit up the scoreboard.
Speaker 3 (01:26:58):
But for an off defensive MVP in the area, who
would you kind of put on that short list and
give the nod?
Speaker 5 (01:27:06):
Here?
Speaker 4 (01:27:06):
On October twenty fourth, woh.
Speaker 7 (01:27:09):
Man, you know, two names came to mind, Okay, and
I'm gonna tell you who my winner is. My winner
right here, right now is Caleb Crenshaw. Okay, the running
back for Austin Anderson to transfer from Austin LBJ from
a season ago. Crenshaw is averaging over two hundred yards
a game. He's averaging nearly ten yards of carry for
(01:27:30):
an Anderson team that you could have thrown in there
as the biggest surprise, but he has completely flipped the
narrative of that entire program offensively, at least after they
graduated heavy on offense. They graduated two Division one players
their quarterback Max Girl like at UCSA, and by the way,
Ed Small ever heard of him. He's lighting it up
for TCU, getting a lot more snaps as a true freshman.
(01:27:52):
So Crenshaw has been the difference. I'm going to give
an honorable mention to Jackson Shad for wife. Again, my
Plugerville roots would not forgive me if I didn't throw
Shad in there. And you were at that Hendrickson game,
you see that it's not perfect. Right now, Jackson Shad
is fifteen and at this point in his young career
(01:28:14):
through eight games, he's completing sixty seven percent of his passes.
He's number four in the state with over twenty three
hundred yards, and he's thrown thirty six touchdowns and he's
ran it in six times. There's there's something to be
said for that.
Speaker 3 (01:28:28):
I just remember watching Shad in that Hendrickson game, and
he still has right some of his frame to grow into.
He is not afraid of getting a hit, and he
kind of changed the momentum of that game early when
he was willing to take some big hits on third
down scrambles.
Speaker 4 (01:28:45):
I like seeing those qualities in the sophomore.
Speaker 7 (01:28:49):
Oh absolutely, And that's maybe the most dynamic offense at
five Division one in the offt area. And I'm only
saying that because I just talked about Anderson. I just
talked about Caleb Crenshaw. But Chad has you know, he
he has weapons, and to his credit, he's used them.
You can have as many weapons as you want. Somebody's
got to get him the football, and Malcolm Hill has
(01:29:11):
put him in a good spot to do so, and
I think it'll continue. But I definitely have to give
the flowers to Caleb Crenshaw. How that kid is not
committed to a Division one program right now is beyond me.
Maybe somebody knows more than you and I do. Actually,
a ton of people do. That's why you and I
are talking right now. I'm a big fan of Caleb
Crenshaw and I would like to see him, you know,
(01:29:32):
continue to succeed.
Speaker 3 (01:29:33):
Hey, they might know more than you, but they're not
going to work harder than you out there calling water
polo today. But you know I had Caleb Crenshaw. I
had Caleb Crenshaw on my short list too. I mean
entering last night at seventeen touchdowns, he added two more
in what was kind of a workman like when for
Anderson over Hayes, they kind of just managed that game
well late, settled for field goals in the red zone
(01:29:54):
at times, but use the safety to help get past
Hayes twenty nine to fourteen, with Anderson ripping off a
couple of big runs in the process. But you know,
MVPs often looked at whether it's for better or for
worse as a quarterback award, and so West and Nielsen
belongs up there in that conversation too. For the Bears
at bass Drop this year, who are unbeaten at seven
(01:30:15):
to zero, Nielsen is thrown for a shade under two
thousand yards, twenty eight touchdowns, only six interceptions, most of
which came in non district play.
Speaker 7 (01:30:25):
Yeah, I mean, you see West and Nielsen up close
and personal, you know a lot more. You know, they
don't hand out stars like that. You're not a four
star quarterback, you know if you're not good, and bats
Drop is a top ten offense in the area. And
I'm sure if you boil down to you know, the
numbers of your choosing, you can make an argument for
top five. They're gonna be firmly in that Division two race.
(01:30:48):
So I don't think West and Nielsen's a bad selection
at all. And I'm I think you put it perfectly.
I'm gonna give you some credit now for hosting your
game show here. I don't think there was a bad
option both Nielsen and SCHADT Grenshaw. We can go down
the list of guys that are performing at a high
level right now. But I think if you were to
pull most Austin area media members who keep up with
(01:31:09):
Texas high school football, they would put those three and
then probably some change with a couple others.
Speaker 3 (01:31:14):
Hey, this award show resents being called a game show,
but that's actually a great idea for a future gimmicks.
Speaker 7 (01:31:22):
I'm just trying to put it in your brain.
Speaker 3 (01:31:24):
Well, let's let's rack your brain for an area defensive MVP.
Obviously it's a lot more subjective because every defense, just
like offense, runs a little bit differently. But is there
a particular standout at the top of your list right
now in the area.
Speaker 7 (01:31:39):
The first name that came to mind for me is
outstanding edge rusher from Lake Travis. So again I keep
teasing that our next, our next section. I'm sorry, this
is why you're the host that I'm not. It's Carter
Buck you know, committed to TCU to the first four
weeks of the season, he had seven sacks. And what
stands out to me is that he's anchoring defense. And
(01:32:01):
I we say it every year that I think may
have you know, the horses, so to speak, to keep
up with Westlake, and when you're anchoring a defense at
a state championship caliber, you should get your credit. And
I think Carter Buck has done, you know, an outstanding
job leading that group, you know, to the point they
had and after the win against Dripping Springs last week,
he didn't he was a part of, you know, two
(01:32:23):
game changing turnovers.
Speaker 3 (01:32:25):
Yeah, and he's got three force fumbles and a pick
this year, like you mentioned, two of those in the
big win and now up to ten sacks as we speak.
I had him at the top of my list with
an honorable mention for Noah McPeak, a really versatile kind
of chess piece for the Wise Wolves.
Speaker 7 (01:32:42):
Noah McPeak is you know, he's a fun story because
you know, he's another one of these guys that kind
of had to grow into his frame a little bit.
His older brother Troy played on that on those White's
Wolves teams that were you know, shocking the area. You know,
early twenty twenties. Crazy to say that I'm gonna ignore it,
But McPeak is he's done it on special teams, he's
done it as a rusher. He can it can drop
(01:33:04):
him into coverage. Malcolm Hill understands that you need kind
of like a row whatever it is, a star, a rover,
whatever in the defense alignment calls for. That's what mc
peek has been. He's been really fun to watch, and
you know, coming down the stretch of the season, we're
gonna get a chance to see him go up against
Caleb Crenshaw where those two are gonna have to lock horn,
(01:33:25):
so to speak, a couple of times, and I can't
wait for that.
Speaker 3 (01:33:27):
Yeah, he's one of those guys you just know he's
going to impact the game, but you don't know exactly
where or in what position or what phase of the
game it's gonna be. So I think we did a
good job there with that list. Buck and McPeak for
defensive MVP, Crenshaw and Nielsen in the mix as well
for offensive MVP. But let's look at tonight's slate because
(01:33:49):
it's gonna mean a lot with only a handful of
district games to go starting in twenty six to six
A with the Battle of the Lakes Lake Travis coming
off that fourteen to seven low scoring victory over Dripping Springs,
that means that with the way tiebreakers work, they could
essentially win the district tonight. And yet the Shaps have
beaten them six straight times in this series. They've got
(01:34:11):
Drew Brees in the building tonight getting his number retired.
Is this the year for Lake Travis to win the
Battle of the Lakes or will Westlake stand tall again?
Speaker 7 (01:34:22):
I don't know, And I feel like we I alluded
to it a second ago. I feel like we do
this kind of every year. I feel like we say, okay, hey,
Dripping Springs is pretty good, and then Lake Travis takes
care of Chipping Springs, and then we say, I don't know,
Lake Travis is pretty good. Westlake may look beatable this year,
and then and then Westlake beats them at leads in
(01:34:43):
the most recent future. I think this is the defense
to do it. Van Hopping for Lake Travis. I don't
know if you saw he broke the Lake Travis all
time rushing touchdown record. So he's an Austin area who
could have thrown him in for offensive MVP. The thing
about Westlake is it reminds.
Speaker 9 (01:35:00):
Me of those Michigan teams.
Speaker 7 (01:35:03):
Especially the ones that are the one that captured the
national championship. I believe Joe Klett put it, They're a
boa constrictor of a defense that just continues to just
pound you out. And Reese Wise, again, we haven't talked
about Recee Wise yet.
Speaker 4 (01:35:18):
Is field time playing lake Travis.
Speaker 7 (01:35:22):
Absolutely and Wise has done it before. His running game
has been tremendous, and you know, I, you know, all
of us reserve the right to kind of say, hey,
you know, I'm I'm going with the shafts until proven
otherwise because I've had this thought before of yes, this
is the time. And Wesley continues to say, you know,
(01:35:46):
not so fast. My rule of thumb is in order
to be the man, you have to beat the man,
and we have yet to see it. Lake Travis is
would not be surprised if I get done with water
polo today and I look up and I say, okay, awesome.
I thought Lake Travis bat Westleigh fourteen to ten would
not be surprised in the slider, But until then, I have.
Speaker 9 (01:36:04):
To go with with Westlake.
Speaker 3 (01:36:06):
Computer by the way, agrees with you. They like Westlake
by three. Okay to the crowded, chaotic, whatever you want
to call it. District twenty five six, say maybe the
Big twelve of area high school football this year. And
you hinted at it earlier. Vandergrift at Huddo for the
headliner tonight. Huddo has won six in a row. But
(01:36:27):
they've got this game and then Vista Ridge and then
McNeil to.
Speaker 4 (01:36:31):
Close out the year.
Speaker 3 (01:36:32):
We're gonna learn a lot more about Eli Reinhart's team
here down the stretch. What kind of keys do you
think come into play with this game?
Speaker 7 (01:36:40):
So I'm gonna start with vander griffts for a moment
and vander Grifts it kind of got swept under the rug,
not by you and I, but Vandergrift a couple of
weeks ago lost to McNeil. That hadn't happened in a
long time. And since then they ratted up two straight
wins against THEA Ridge and against Manor what I do
like for the h that this is in Huddo. You know,
(01:37:03):
Vandergriff has shown, you know, a couple of lapsines here
and there, and but their defense is always going to
be one of the top in the region, not even district,
It's always gonna be one of the top in the region.
And so I look at that vander Griff has an
outstanding defensive player. He's an defensive lineman, Hugo de Lavada
(01:37:23):
Vasquez Vasquez team leader for tackles for a loss. But
the thing is big twelve is a great way to
put it, Jake, because the Hippos just run, man, they
just get out and run. Caden Stepik I mentioned him
earlier directing that offense under like the North Crowley umbrella
if you will, you know, lots of different concepts being
(01:37:44):
worked in. I think this is the time for Huddo
to kind of announce where they are. If you were
to ask me, you know, dripping Springs be Vandergriff earlier
in the season, I would have said, Huddles nowhere near
dripping Springs. After the resume we've seen from Huddo, I
think this is their coming out party, and I think
they get a narrow win over the Vipers.
Speaker 2 (01:38:06):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (01:38:06):
Vander Grift in that case would not be able to
make good on their bid for an eighth straight district title.
That hinges on tonight for the Vipers and maybe Hinges
on every game for them going forward, given their spot
in the standings, not having that tiebreaker against McNeil.
Speaker 4 (01:38:22):
So EJ, you're going with Huddle? Do you want to
guess who the computer took and by how many?
Speaker 7 (01:38:29):
I'm going to assume that you know, we're gonna ride
on you know, Vandergriffs and Vandergriff's defense because of you
know how many shootout that Huddo has gotten into.
Speaker 9 (01:38:38):
But I wouldn't be surprised.
Speaker 7 (01:38:39):
Who do we got?
Speaker 4 (01:38:40):
Computer likes Vandergriff by four.
Speaker 7 (01:38:44):
Hmm, and once again, would not be surprised if that's
the result.
Speaker 2 (01:38:48):
I just think.
Speaker 7 (01:38:49):
Huddle makes one more play offensively because of their speed
on the outside.
Speaker 3 (01:38:55):
They don't play games on computers, and that's what this
next matchup is interesting. McNeil, who, like we said, has
had just a terrific season four and one right now
in district play, they're gonna be watching Vandergrift and Huddle
carefully because well, but they can't take their eye too
far off the ball tonight they are at cedar Ridge
(01:39:15):
tonight now, McNeil, they backed up their Vandergrift win seventeen fourteen,
kind of low scoring, low possession contest with a game
one in a very different style forty five to forty
two over Vista Ridge. Cedar Ridge just lost to those
same two opponents.
Speaker 4 (01:39:31):
But like we said, the.
Speaker 3 (01:39:32):
Parody in this district, this being a home game for
the Raiders, can they cause McNeil some problems tonight and
possibly shake this thing up again.
Speaker 13 (01:39:43):
I'm not surprised that anything in this district at all.
Speaker 5 (01:39:46):
I'm not.
Speaker 13 (01:39:47):
And you know, a rivalry lost a couple of weeks ago.
Speaker 7 (01:39:49):
To Round Rock probably doesn't feel great, you know, especially
in the fashion that they did. But they've hung with
Vista Ridge and this, this is big twelve. This is
you know, some offensive firepower. You know, Noah Definish, he's averaging
just about seven yards of caring for Cetridge. I like
what they're doing. The thing is is that I think,
(01:40:12):
you know the old Bobby Bowden, you know quote you
have first in order to move through your program, you
have to lose big, and then you have to lose close,
and you have to win close, and then it comes later.
Speaker 5 (01:40:24):
Maybe winning big.
Speaker 7 (01:40:25):
McNeil is winning these games.
Speaker 2 (01:40:27):
Now.
Speaker 7 (01:40:28):
McNeil showed that they can beat Vander Grift. You understand,
You understand where I'm getting to here. So I think
that you know Scott Hermis's club knows how good they
are now, And maybe they didn't when they played Wis
in Week one and lost fifty six to twenty eight.
But they beat Lake Beltan, who they didn't beat last
year and again heartbreaking fashion. Okay, they beat vander Griff,
(01:40:52):
they beat Vista Ridge. I wouldn't be surprised if it's
high scoring, but I still feel comfortable about McNeil here.
Speaker 4 (01:40:59):
Computer I thinks McNeil wins it by thirteen. I don't know.
Speaker 3 (01:41:02):
That one just kind of jumped out to me, as
you know, a desperate perhaps Cedar Ridge team at home
against the McNeil team who will not be able to
start slowly off of by Lake Belton, by the way,
plays Cedar Park tonight.
Speaker 4 (01:41:14):
That's a pretty good matchup.
Speaker 3 (01:41:15):
But I know you wanted to get to one more
down south San Marcus at Steel. The Rattlers have never
beaten the Knights, but they're off to a darn good start.
How can San Marcus keep this one close to night?
Do you see them being able to hang with Steel?
So the for.
Speaker 7 (01:41:31):
Quick background before we get out of here, Jake. The
San Marcus Rattlers are one of the great stories because
of where they were a year ago. You throw away
any stats, you throw it away in uas you know,
is that a coaching change, that a program change. There
were eleven players that were disqualified by the UIL for
different reasons, and they get all those players back this year.
(01:41:52):
So a team last year that was losing sixty three zero,
sometimes they get their dogs back, and now they've been
able to really like be in some games that they weren't.
They shut out. But to Johnson, it close left to
East Central, who is a very underrated club in the
San Antonio area, blue blood Judson. The thing about San
Marcus is that their defense I think is a very underrated.
(01:42:14):
Their quarterback Bucks sign is good. They have weapons, but
their defense has risen up. They've done very good against
quality opponents. They held White's to twenty five points. They
beat Huddo in the week opening week.
Speaker 9 (01:42:27):
Of the season.
Speaker 7 (01:42:29):
They have their two way star Jordan Lampkin. I think
they can. The question is are they ready the same way?
Are you ready to win close games? Because this has
to come together this year for San Marcus because of
the implications surrounding them.
Speaker 9 (01:42:44):
But Steele is going to be Steel.
Speaker 7 (01:42:46):
Okay, when you're Steel and you beat Liberty Hill forty
five to ten early in the season, that says something
that says.
Speaker 9 (01:42:53):
That, hey, we're not going anywhere just yet.
Speaker 7 (01:42:55):
Coach signs is. I'm a big fan of his, especially
with the way that the Knights that played the most
recent future But the Knights have rattled off three wins
and I would caution you to thoroughly pick Steel. I'm
gonna pick Steel, but I don't think it's the same
score that we've seen in previous years.
Speaker 4 (01:43:16):
Yeah, we'll keep an eye on that score.
Speaker 3 (01:43:18):
I know you've got to get your goggles and swim
cat back on and get back in the pool. I'm kidding,
get back above the pool, pool side, whoever you call it.
It's a broadcast water polo. Has that been fun for you?
By the way, I have never called water polo. You know.
Speaker 7 (01:43:31):
It's a variation of rules of handball that we see
