Speaker 1 (02:19):

montage production there from the producer Jay Carmon Good afternoon. Everybody,

(04:36):
Welcome to the program here on sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred The Zone.

Speaker 3 (04:40):
My name is Craig Way.

Speaker 1 (04:41):
Glad to have you with us, and we're with you
each and every weekday afternoon from two pm to five pm.

Speaker 3 (04:46):
Glad to have you with us. Us, of course.

Speaker 1 (04:48):
Includes the producer Jay Carman, who was you were kind
of well, you were engineering.

Speaker 3 (04:58):
The guys on Saturday right for Long Orange Game Day. Yep,
I cover three. You were out a cover three there
on Anderson Lane with a.

Speaker 2 (05:07):
Lot of suddenly turned ole miss fans.

Speaker 3 (05:10):
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm sure.

Speaker 1 (05:13):
And and then and then after that, what you you
got a chance to see the waning part of the
ball game?

Speaker 2 (05:21):
Oh, I saw, I missed the very fast art for Texas.

Speaker 3 (05:25):
Yep.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
Then I saw the entire middle chunk of the ball
game and made sure I was back in position to
make sure the third Long Worn guys got on the
air after the game. So I saw the middle chunk
and the rest of it. I had you in the car.

Speaker 1 (05:36):
I guess the third and Long Worn Podcast guys they
had fun with this thing afterwards.

Speaker 2 (05:40):
Huh yeah, it's awesome. I got a little behind the
scenes of them watching and reacting to it live before
their stream went out to the rest of the world,
and they were they were pumped and they had they
had a fun time. Looking back on some comments that
might have come in from earlier in the day that
didn't quite pan out to be.

Speaker 1 (05:58):
True, I didn't know is that there was a lot
of receipts, receipts being kept on Saturday from people's well
they're done, they're they're they're done. Ah, this is I
you know, there was a lot of that, and then
after the comeback then folks were like, well, you know,
what do you got to say? Now? You know there's
a lots of are that didn't age well or you know,
there's all that kind of stuff that happens. Hey, look,

(06:23):
I understand it certainly when fans do it, and even
media I'm not quite up to speed on the pressing
need to tweet it out instantaneously when something goes against it.

Speaker 3 (06:38):
They're dead now. My brother's like that. I got a brother.
It's like that, they're dead now, you know, not just
about Texas.

Speaker 1 (06:44):
He'll do it about you know, other Sometimes it's easier
to do that with the Dallas Cowboys and other teams,
but what is the Packers fan or the Dolphins fan? Uh,
neither those are those those are my sons. Oh, my
brother is kind of a cowboy fan of guessed he
lives and forwards been around there, but he loves to
just you know, way in on stuff, whether he's excited

(07:06):
about it or not. But anyway, it was a thrilling
come from behind win. So Texas does get to win
and they now get ready for the Vanderbilt Commodore's number
nine team in the country coming in Saturday morning at
eleven am. Our coverage will begin at seven am with

(07:30):
the third and long worn podcast guys at seven am,
and then at eight am it'll be Longhorns Game day guys.
That would be Cameron Parker, My cardboll Hart, and Mark Henry.
There long Bevo Boulevard, getting back, going back to the
winship circle.

Speaker 3 (07:46):
How early do you have to be there on Saturday
to set this thing up.

Speaker 2 (07:49):
I'll be there definitely, long before the sun. The latest
I'll probably be there is six in the morning. There's
a chance I got to go earlier, so that early
wake up will be worth it, depending on the way
we feel. At about three o'clock on Saturday, but no,
it'll be a good time, a good show, and I

(08:09):
hope we see a great crowd turnout right and early
to come see us at Windship Circle.

Speaker 1 (08:13):
Yeah yeah, so'll be down there at Bevo Boulevard there
in the Windship Circle area. The hook them hang out
down there. Big Beer Thub will be down there to
satisfy your malted beverage needs. Because they've got a whole
bunch of beers on tap, don't they.

Speaker 2 (08:29):
Yeah, they've got at least a dozen of them on tap.
And they've got food trucks all around us. We've seen
different food trucks every week. The juicy lucy burgers are
not too far away. There's some wraps, there's some juice
which might actually fit an eleven AM kickoff. Well, you
start your day with a healthy base, and then you
go into DKR and eat or drink whatever you might have.

Speaker 1 (08:49):
You Okay, So Mark Henry skips that part of it.
He does all the other stuff though. Sure, he's kind
of our taste test on that lets us know about
the food item.

Speaker 2 (08:58):
People bring him things and then I don't know where
they come from.

Speaker 1 (09:00):
Really, that's cool, that's cool. He's a he's an important gentleman.
It's good to keep him happy as well, and so anyway,
it'll be back. And then it was announced today official
Post King concert The Beach Boys.

Speaker 3 (09:17):
Hey, now, now let's get I think there's two of
the original ones.

Speaker 1 (09:23):
Mike Love is one of them, and I forgot the
other one, but two of the But that's how it
is with bands of the sixties and the seventies and
even the eighties nowadays. If you can see that band
that has even just one of the original members in it,
you've done pretty well. You've done alright. I think when

(09:44):
I saw Little Riverband they had two of the original members.
Obviously Steely Dan doesn't have alder Becker anymore. He passed
away a few years ago, but Donald Fagan and the
rest were pretty much session musicians anyway. The Eagles don't
have Glenn Fry anymore, but his son, Deacon Fry, splits
vocals with Vince Gill, who's in the band on all

(10:07):
of the songs where Glenn Fry had the lead vocals.
Dot Henley of course, is still there in Joe Wallah,
Timothy B. Schmidt, all the rest of the guys.

Speaker 2 (10:15):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (10:16):
If you're seeing the Eagles and that's why I'm hearing
they're extending their residency at the Spear in Las Vegas.

Speaker 3 (10:22):
Oh, every night is like a sellout.

Speaker 2 (10:25):
And Mike Love and Bruce Johnston the best Bruce Johns's
original members. Who will be at Longhorn State Limits.

Speaker 1 (10:31):
Yeah, yeah, so it'll be it'll be out there, you know,
over out by where the LBJ Library is and and
normally a lot of times I just kind of venture
out after the head on Homer, someone of might venture
over there as a Beach Boys fan, you know, I
like them, so uh. Anyway, that's that's the postgame concert
going on. We have long worn head coach Steve Sarkisian's

(10:56):
weekly news conference. We brought it to you live this morning,
as we do every money morning at eleven thirty, and
we'll hear from Sark from the presser here during this program.
As we do, we'll break it up and break it
down into where you'll hear parts of it throughout the
course of the show. In the two o'clock hour, of
the three o'clock hour, in the four o'clock hour, you
will hear from Sark in all of those segments of

(11:20):
that or in each of those three hours also also
a review of the Dallas Cowboys and the Houston Texans Cowboys,
and the review is not so pleasant since they come
off being summarily handled by the Denver broncoas yesterday. But

(11:41):
we'll hear from Ryan Schottenheimer, the Cowboys head coach. How
about the Houston Texans. Yeah, and what they did to
the San Francisco forty nine ers. A defense just kind
of really squeezed the life out of that forty nine
er offense, really just kind of suffocated them, and the
offense found enough. Xavier Hutchinson now has become a real

(12:01):
heavy duty target for CJ.

Speaker 3 (12:03):
Stroud.

Speaker 1 (12:04):
So we'll hear from Dimico Rians head coach. Course, you
hear the Texans games here on AM thirteen under the Zone,
and you hear the Cowboys on our sister station ninety
eight point one fmkvet, so you.

Speaker 3 (12:17):
Hear that tonight here on the Zone.

Speaker 1 (12:20):
One more exhibition contest for Texas women's basketball. The fourth
ranked Long Warns will host the Pioneers from Texas Women's
University and TWU as. We knew that when we were
back when I was back in Detton, North Texas, because
the campuses they're not that far apart just across town,
but really not that for a couple of miles away.

Speaker 3 (12:39):
If that tw.

Speaker 1 (12:43):
They were one of the better Division two women's basketball
teams in the country the last couple of years.

Speaker 3 (12:49):
They went to the Sweet sixteen.

Speaker 1 (12:51):
Last year lost to the team that the Long Runs
beat last Monday in the Sweet sixteen.

Speaker 3 (12:55):
That was Love a Christian who went to the Elite eight.

Speaker 1 (12:58):
And of course, by NCAA rule, you have to play
if you're playing an exhibition, it has to be against
If you're a Division one program, it has to be
against the Division two program or Division three or NAI
unless you're playing a one off one game for charity,
and then that can be against a D one opponent,
but it'll be.

Speaker 3 (13:19):
D two opposition.

Speaker 1 (13:20):
Tonight, Kathy Harston will join me for the call for
Moody Center six forty five pregame start time and the
tip off is at seven o'clock Texas against Texas Women's
University College football notes. The new AP Top twenty five
poll is out. Texas did move up two spots to

(13:40):
number twenty from number twenty two, and they actually fell
one spot in the coaches pub but they're still ranked ahead.

Speaker 3 (13:48):
Of where they are on the AP. They're number nineteen
in the coach's pole.

Speaker 1 (13:53):
So the AP top twenty five is Ohio State, Indiana, Texas,
A and M who looked really good and beating LSU
more on that moment. Alabama, Georgia, Oregon, Ole, Miss, Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt,
and Miami round out the top ten. So in the
top ten you have A and M, Alabama, Georgia, Ole, Miss,
and Vanderbilt. Five of the top nine are from the SEC.

(14:17):
In the second ten, by you actually tied Miami at
the number ten spot. Then you have Notre Dame, Texas, Tech, Tennessee, Virginia, Louisville, Cincinnati, Oklahoma, Missouri, Texas, Michigan, Houston, USC,
Utah and Memphis. So there are nine teams in the

(14:38):
top twenty five out of the Southeastern Conference.

Speaker 2 (14:41):
USC shoved Michigan in a locker. How are they two
spots behind them? And it's an Illinois loss.

Speaker 1 (14:46):
People are people who asked the same question about Texas
and Oklahoma.

Speaker 3 (14:50):
Yeah, you know, but.

Speaker 2 (14:52):
Anyway, they care more about losses than wins. Sometimes it's
just not a philosophy for voting that I agree with.
But it's at the end of the day. It's not
that significant.

Speaker 1 (15:00):
Yeah, yeah, it really isn't. It'll come down to, you know,
the CFP, the College Football Playoff rankings. Speaking of that,
by the way, the projection of the new college Football
Playoff field the new projection from Heather Dinnich, who obviously
covers it extensively for ESPN. She has Vanderbilt in the

(15:23):
playoff right now. She's got Ohio State at number one,
Indiana number two, Alabama number three, Texas A and M
A number four, Georgia number five, Ole miss six, Miami seven,
Oregon eight, Vanderbilt nine, BYU ten, Georgia Tech eleven, and
Notre Dame at number twelve. So the way she has

(15:45):
the bracket set up, the four schools getting buys Ohio State, Indiana, Alabama,
and Texas A and M. She has Alabama as a
Southeastern Conference champion, but she has A and M getting
a bye as well, probably because she is projecting the
Aggies to be undefeated all the way into Atlanta, where
they would only have one loss losing the Alabama that
would still on him a first round by.

Speaker 2 (16:06):
At Missouri next week. That's not easy.

Speaker 1 (16:09):
Yeah, So they do have that. The rest of the
on campus first round games. The five versus twelve game
would be twelve seed Memphis projected as the American Conference
champion at the five seed Georgia, the eleven seed Georgia
Tech at the six seed Ole Miss the ten seed
BYU projected to be the Big twelve champ they thumped

(16:30):
Iowa State, projected to play at number seven Miami, and
then number nine Vanderbilt at number eight Organs. So she
has Vanderbilt in the playoffs. In the college football, of course,
this week would also have a lot of say in
that how it goes, So we'll see if that is

(16:50):
indeed the case. BYU, by the way, has a big,
big game.

Speaker 2 (17:00):
Yeah, two weeks from now, they're going to Lubbock.

Speaker 3 (17:02):
That's yeah, I was I was looking at that's a
that's a big game there. And then what is the
game where I'll tell you where. I'll tell you exactly
where I was looking for.

Speaker 1 (17:18):
Okay, here it is. Cincinnati is playing at Utah in
the Big twelve. That's a huge game. That's where College
Game Day is this week. They're in Salt Lake City.
So number seventeen Cincinnati, number twenty four Utah. That's a
big game in the Big twelve.

Speaker 2 (17:34):
Think of BYU has to go to Cincinnati two later
in the year.

Speaker 1 (17:37):
Yeah, they do, so, so it's gonna be that's gonna
be a huge game at the end of the season.
End of the regular season.

Speaker 2 (17:50):
Yeah, there's gonna be a couple of two loss Big
twelve teams sitting sitting there hoping for at large bids,
probably matching up against three loss SEC teams, and the
debates are going to be crazy.

Speaker 1 (17:59):
Yeah, Cincinnati plays at number twenty four Utah, then they
have Arizona at home, then they have BYU's number ten
right now, they have them at home, and then at
TCU to close out the regular season. So Cincinnati looks
really good though they beat Baylor pretty soundly on Saturday.

Speaker 3 (18:15):
They look really good.

Speaker 1 (18:16):
But that Big twelvel I think is still up for
grabs between BYU, Texas Tech Cincinnati Utah.

Speaker 3 (18:23):
I think it's still up in the air in the
Big twelve Conference.

Speaker 2 (18:27):
Yeah, And you know what, we'd be talking about the
ACC the same way if Georgia Tech hadn't won that
super razor tight game over Wake Forest. Yeah. But those
two conferences both very muddy group fighting for the top,
and it's unclear if they could get one team in
or maybe even push for three teams in.

Speaker 3 (18:44):
That's true. It's still up in the air. All right.

Speaker 1 (18:46):
Up next, we'll hear from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkisian
here on a Monday afternoon on Sports Radio AM thirteen
under the Zone and the radio app here's your real
sixties bide here Hugh Maskela and the Friends of Distinction
with Grays in the Grass. This was also one of

(19:07):
the entries in our cow bell contest, so they played
some cow bell in this song.

Speaker 3 (19:15):
This was one of the entries. It was not the winner,
but deserving of some mention.

Speaker 1 (19:19):
And so that's where hitting back where we're going to
announce the winner coming up in the four o'clock ours
to stay tuned for that.

Speaker 2 (19:26):
Oh that's gonna be like American Idol. You don't want
to hear your song coming back from a break?

Speaker 3 (19:30):
Yeah, right exactly, And so so that was one of
the songs. Hugh massa Kela.

Speaker 1 (19:36):
By the way, his son Sal was the guy who
Sal Mascado had done a lot of espn X game
stuff commentary on those categories. So anyway, yeah, that's when
to go here from some of the ones that had
come in under consideration. But let's hear from the Loghorn's
head coach, Steve Sarkashan from the weekly news conference heard
live earlier this morning here on.

Speaker 3 (19:58):
Thirteen under the Zone, beginning with his opening statement.

Speaker 4 (20:01):
So just to quick recap from Saturday. First of all,
shout out to a lot of more nation, all those
that made the trip to Starkville. That turnout, their energy
was tremendous in that game, especially lag in the ball game.
You know, I think when you looked at that game
and you looked at obviously the ending of the game,

(20:24):
we look at a lot of what we what we
believe in around here, one of which is playing great defense,
and that that was not our best day defensively.

Speaker 5 (20:34):
But if you look at the last four drives.

Speaker 4 (20:35):
On defense, I think we gave up one first down
in those final four drives. And so as much as
I know, there was attention kind of on the offense,
and you think about a comeback offense and special teams,
but none of that would have been possible without our
defense rally the troops and get re energized by the
offense putting some points on the board and going out

(20:56):
and making some critical plays from critical stops all the
way up until up until he end there. And over time,
I thought, uh, naturally in the passing game, we found
a way to create some explosive plays. You know, Brian
Wingo obviously had had some big plays there. You know,
two tremendous touchdown catches by by Parker Levingstone and Emmitt Mosley,

(21:20):
but both of them had really good touchdowns earlier to
Parker did a nice job on his route and his
first touchdown. Emmett with a nice, nice basket catch for
his first touchdown. And I thought DeAndre Moore was really
critical in this game on third down. You know, there
was some really critical plays for that. He made it
for us to extend drives.

Speaker 5 (21:40):
Uh. And I thought Arch like I thought, you know
for Saturday Night, thought he.

Speaker 1 (21:44):
Was a warrior.

Speaker 4 (21:45):
You know, he stood in there, he competed like he
always does. And there was there was a couple of
protection breakdowns for sure in the game, which we need
to we need to clean up, but there was a
couple of others where he knew he was gonna get
hit and he stood in the pocket and delivered able
all and delivered accurate ball. So that was all very
positive playing a very good Vanderbilt team. I think Clark

(22:06):
Lee has done a tremendous job with this program. This
this this team is it plays like a team. You know.

Speaker 5 (22:13):
They they they they they they know their style of play.

Speaker 4 (22:17):
They huddle, they shift, they motion, They do a lot
of different things offensively, uh, but they limit your possessions.
They're very efficient offensive football team.

Speaker 3 (22:26):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (22:26):
And then conversely, defensively, they play really well. They they
play collectively together. They've got an elite field goal kicker,
they've got an elite kickoff returner. UH. So they're a
they're an all three phase team. UH, and it's gonna
take all three phases to to battle and compete. Obviously,
the quarterback uh is a tip of the spear.

Speaker 3 (22:45):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (22:45):
He's one of the more competitive, you know, players that
I've I've competed against.

Speaker 5 (22:49):
Uh. He's their leading rusher. He obviously passes the ball.

Speaker 3 (22:52):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (22:53):
He makes plays at critical moments when they need to
have it. And so he's a guy that uh, you know,
he's getting all the all the praise that he's getting
is well deserved. He's a very good football player. And
I think you know, one thing about playing quarterback. It's
not always about the passes you throw, it's not always
about the runs you make. It's about instilling belief in
your teammates and instilling belief in your organization, instilling belief

(23:16):
in your fan base. And I think Diego Pavia has
done that for that program, and so all the credit
in the world to him, all the credit in the
world to Clark and the start that they've had to
the season. So it's gonna be a heck of a
challenge for us looking forward to it. Like I said,
I think we've got a re energized team looking forward
to getting back home at KR.

Speaker 1 (23:35):
All Right, So there's the opening statement from start, and
he was asked about the running game and how they
want to try to get that untracked and get it
going again and being a factor in football games.

Speaker 5 (23:48):
I think one of the keys is, you know, the
run game.

Speaker 4 (23:52):
It needs to be in Unison and we're we're you know,
I thought, we blocked some runs really well the other night,
and we ran some runs really well the other night,
but consistently we aren't quite in Unison.

Speaker 5 (24:04):
That the way we need to be.

Speaker 4 (24:06):
Uh, there's run timing that's involved. It's runner setting blocks.
It's linemen and tight ends, understanding angles of where the
runs are going, where they should hit. And so we
need to spend more time on that. You know, we
need to be we need to be diligent. And and
again to your point, you know, we need the run game.
And again I thought the run game was relatively effective,

(24:27):
but then the game went the way that it went
and we had to kind of divert away from that,
and then we snuck some runs late. You know, Trey
had a couple of runs later in the game when
when we were when we were throwing it. And but
we got to be able to run the football, and
we need to be able to play second and five,
second and four football that allows us to have the
whole playbook at our disposal. Second and ten, second and
twelve is not where you want to live. And same

(24:49):
with being said, you know when we call some of
our play action passes, it's okay to check the ball
down too, and and you can find you can find
hidden yardage and checkdowns in the past game on first
and ten. Because we just don't want to be a run,
run pass team. You know, that's that's not advantageous either.
We need to have the we need to have the
right type of balance, We need to utilize all of

(25:09):
our offense that way, and so that this week's going
to be very important because we need to be very
efficient as an offensive football team, because the possessions are
probably going to be limited. You know that we're not
going to go out there and run eighty plays this week.
We're probably going to be somewhere between fifty and sixty five.
And so when you think of it that way, that's
about an eight maybe ten possession game, and so you

(25:30):
got to maximize your possessions when you get them.

Speaker 1 (25:32):
Next a very important question was arch Manning able to
practice this morning?

Speaker 5 (25:38):
He did not.

Speaker 4 (25:38):
He's in protocol right now. We'll have more information as
a week goes.

Speaker 1 (25:43):
All right, so there it is, he's in concussion protocol
and as such unable to practice, and again it'll be
updated during the course of the week. I think when
we get the first SEC student athlete availability report on
Wednesday evening, that's where we'll see if his status has
been upgraded, and then obviously again on Thursday. According to

(26:04):
the protocol, a player will have to have been able
to participate by Thursday in order to be eligible for that,
so we'll see, and.

Speaker 3 (26:12):
Then one other.

Speaker 1 (26:13):
Speaking of the quarterbacks, he was asked about the unique
challenge involved in trying to prepare for Diego Pavia.

Speaker 5 (26:21):
Well, I think there's layers to what you have to
prepare for with him.

Speaker 4 (26:24):
Is one the pass game, you know, and his ability
to find the big receiver, his ability to find the
tight end, and they're very creative in getting him the ball.
I think, Two, the triple option aspect of their offense
and him making those decisions in the option game. Three
is the direct quarterback run game that they use and

(26:45):
the quarterback powers and things. And then four the ad
lib plays that he makes. He's very good at ad
lib plays. The first touchdown last year against US was
an ad lib play with the sprint out that he
ends up you know, ends up scoring on. So you
have to defend him kind of in layers, and you've
got to be very detailed. You got to have great
eye discipline against this group and against him, and you

(27:08):
got to make sure you do a great job set
in your edges or that he can get on the
perimeter on you quick.

Speaker 1 (27:13):
All right, So there's some from Longhorn's head coach Steve Sarkasian.
We'll hear more from him in the three o'clock hour
and in the four o'clock hour. Up next Inconceivable for
a Monday right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under
the zone of the iHeartRadio app. Second hour of the
program here on thirteen on the zone. We in the
first hour, I was reading that text on the text

(27:35):
line for somebody talking about sitting in the balcony above us,
above the press box and writing a Mississippi State cow
bell on the Ryan Niblett punt. Returning, he said, of
course I was wearing my burnt orange. He had a
bad as well. Here we have what some of the
else submitting a.

Speaker 2 (27:49):
Text yeah, David on the YouTube stream. We also stream
the show on YouTube x and Facebook every day, and
if you leave a comment, you could be a part
of the show, just like the text line. David said, Craig,
you may have been asked this question before, but have
there been football games that you called where you completely
felt the Longhorns had no chance to win, but ultimately
they did? And then he had a follow up kind

(28:11):
of where that ranks among such games.

Speaker 1 (28:14):
I've been asked that question before, and I've been I've
been asked that question about basketball games, baseball games, women's
basketball games, football games.

Speaker 3 (28:23):
Yeah, I've been asking.

Speaker 1 (28:27):
I don't know if I've ever thought it was completely
over it because I've seen too many weird things happen
over the years. But I will tell you this, on
the fourth down pass that Arch Manning threw that was
incomplete at that point, I think it was about eleven

(28:47):
forty to go in the game. It was thirty eight
to twenty one Mississippi State. When it first fell in incomplete,
I remember thinking, oh, boy, like this is going to
be incredibly different. But they had thrown a flag for
roughing the passer as they said the second movement I
guess they called it or whatever, and it was it

(29:08):
was an extra step before Arch really got hammered hard
and kept the drive alive. And they wind up scorning
on the drive because they were down seventeen at the time.
That pulled them to within ten when they got the
touchdown passed Emitt Mosley. And by the way, if you
missed it, Jake's highlight montage will re air to open
the four o'clock hour. We always have that to open

(29:30):
the show, and then he reairs in the four o'clock
hour for those who are still in the office, don't
get in the car until four o'clock, so that'll be
coming up at the four o'clock hour.

Speaker 3 (29:37):
Because I know, I will tell you this.

Speaker 1 (29:41):
It was probably the on social media, the most requests
and call outs, if you will, from fans wanting to
hear one of our play by play calls, wanting to
hear the Ryan Niblet pump return.

Speaker 3 (29:54):
It's on our Instagram.

Speaker 2 (29:55):
Yeah, at AM thirteen hundred the zone, and David followed up,
he said, yeah, that penalty by Mississippi State's defense was
definitely a godsend for Texas. It was.

Speaker 1 (30:04):
But to answer your question, David, I mean, I'm sure
I thought there were times when it did not look
good and there was a good change, we're going to lose,
and then they came back and won. When they were
down thirty five to seven late in the first half
to Oklahoma State, which is the largest comfort behind win
by points.

Speaker 3 (30:25):
That was in two thousand and four, and it came
back and won.

Speaker 1 (30:30):
They scored what forty nine unanswered They ended up winning
at fifty six thirty five. That was one when they
were down thirty five to fourteen in the fourth quarter
in Stillwater and came back and won thirty eight thirty five.
Jamal Charles had a lot to do with that. He
had a huge touchdown run those two come back. So

(30:50):
when they were down thirty six to seventeen to Washington
in the Holiday Bowl, major apploit's final game, They're down
nineteen in the third quarter, that's the largest come back
that they've had in a game in the second half.
The thirty five to seven Oklahoma State was in the
second quarter, but the largest comeback in the second half

(31:10):
was when they were down nineteen to Washington in the
Holiday Bowl two thousand and one and came back to
win that one. So I think that final is forty
six forty three. So there have been many times when
you thought it doesn't look good. But try to understand

(31:32):
my mindset on this thing too. I a lot of
times I'm so wrapped up and making sure that I'm
getting to the next play to call properly, or maybe
I've got to pitch a break. Maybe I've got to
pitch a station identification followed by a break. You know,
there's lots of stuff going on that doesn't allow me

(31:56):
to dwell as a fan would on either the positivity
or the negative of a certain play, because they got
to get on to the next thing.

Speaker 5 (32:03):
That's why.

Speaker 1 (32:04):
So that's why I don't think about it as much
as maybe a lot of fans were simply because of
being in action at the time. And where would it rank, Hey,
it's up there. It's definitely up there. With those two
comebacks against Oklahoma State and the one against Washington. The heck,
they were now twenty one nothing in the second quarter

(32:26):
to Texas Tech back in six when Cole McCoy was
a red shirt freshman and came back and won that game.
So they've had some over the years where they were
pretty far down and had to come.

Speaker 3 (32:39):
Back and win.

Speaker 5 (32:40):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (32:40):
And as far as recent history, just in the year
twenty twenty five, I think about basketball game down twenty
two to Texas A and M in January. Yeah, storm
back the aston large part of Tree Johnson.

Speaker 1 (32:52):
Yep, yep, that was there as well. So anyway, those
things all come to mind. All right, let's hear a
little bit, yes we must, We should hear some from
the Cowboys, and this in the aftermath of the loss

(33:13):
to the Denver Broncos, yesterday and first and foremost, and
when I went, everybody wanting to know what went wrong
for the defense after they'd shown improvement the prior week
and then win against Washington. What went wrong for the
defense against Denver?

Speaker 6 (33:30):
I think, you know, when you look at it, I'm
not just gonna start with the defense. I don't think
any of us coach would play well enough. We knew
we'd have to come in and own the line of scrimmage.
I think it started up front. You got to give
Denver a lot of credit, you know. I think they
they moved us around pretty good, had some big explosive runs,
and that's hard. But you know, I told the guys,

(33:50):
I said, look, you know, it's it's one game. You know,
we did not play well, we did not coach well.
We're gonna get right back to work tonight. And if
you let it bleed over into two and three games,
then that's that means you're not a competitor, because this
happens in this league.

Speaker 1 (34:05):
By the way, our man CB pointed out that, well,
I was eighteen years ago today that Jamal Charles had
the amazing fourth quarter against Nebraska at dk R came back. Yeah,
that was an O seven. That was a tremendous fourth
quarter for him. I think, well, it was something like
two hundred and eighty six yards in that game. He
had amazing comeback. So thank you CB for that. Schottneimer

(34:26):
more from him. Asked about Dak Prescott, was he pressing
after some missed opportunities early?

Speaker 3 (34:32):
I don't think so.

Speaker 6 (34:33):
I think you know, we all felt it, you know,
I mean like it was one of those deals where,
like we it was hard to get into rhythm a
little bit.

Speaker 3 (34:39):
You know.

Speaker 6 (34:42):
You know, they played us two man and he had
a chance to go down the middle on Fergie and
it was I think the rookie Baron kind of looked
back and got it.

Speaker 5 (34:49):
But I don't think so.

Speaker 6 (34:50):
I think, you know, at the end of the day,
Dak's done a great job of trying to just say
each plays its own and you know, I don't I
don't think that, you know, I think that, you know,
just but we have to win the target take over battle.

Speaker 5 (35:02):
You know, we didn't do that. You know, we've been
doing that really really well.

Speaker 6 (35:05):
And so you know, you have the one right before
the half, and you have the other one right you
know down there late we're fighting our butts off try
to get back in it, and that's not who we are.

Speaker 5 (35:15):
But no, I don't think that it had him pressing.

Speaker 3 (35:17):
Or anything like that.

Speaker 1 (35:19):
He was then asked about George Pickens, who has been
so hot for them of late, but didn't have many
targets in the game, isn't it? And those of us
who had him on our fantasy teams took know of that,
not that it hurt me. I'm already in good shape.
I've already cleinched victory and I got Patrick Mahmes tonight.

Speaker 2 (35:35):
Oh and no Daniels either.

Speaker 3 (35:37):
He didn't need him. Yeah, I didn't need him.

Speaker 1 (35:38):
But was asked why a notut more targets for Pickens.
Certainly on some of those key routes.

Speaker 6 (35:43):
It sounds easy and simple, and I understand that, but
it was a certain route combination. Now that I remember
the play, there's a route combination that he thought was
a better look on the front side. And I'm never
gonna doubt Deac on that. I mean, he's gonna make
those decisions. And when you're blessed to have two guys
like that, it's easy to second guess and say we'll
throw it to the GP. Well, I said, what are

(36:04):
we going to take CD out of the offense now? Like,
I mean, that's that's not a good idea either. So
you know, the ball is gonna get spread around. And
they did a good job. Again, I'm what keeps it?
Give them credit. You know, they made the plays they
had to make and we did not. And that's what
this league does to you. Yeah, and it can demoralize you.
And he was asked, in fact, how do you avoid

(36:25):
becoming demoralized after getting beat by twenty points like this?

Speaker 3 (36:29):
You know, be honest.

Speaker 6 (36:30):
I mean what I said to him, you know, said look,
I said, if anybody feels like you coach or played
well today, hey raise your hand. And there was not
a single hand that went up. Said, okay, I agree
with that. I said, you know, we have to learn
from it.

Speaker 5 (36:43):
We have to fix it.

Speaker 6 (36:44):
You know, got beat up a little bit today and
there was a bunch of moving parts and we were
throwing guys in there on defense a little bit late,
and they were attacking a few guys. And but again,
the biggest thing you do is you be honest. I'm
never gonna lie to these guys.

Speaker 3 (36:58):
I'm not.

Speaker 5 (36:58):
I mean, that's not who I am. It's a man.

Speaker 6 (37:00):
I'm gonna always hold myself accountable. I'm always gonna look
at myself first. And like I said, adversity in this
league is not a bad thing. The university is bad
if it lets you affect you and if you let
it begin to point fingers and well what about.

Speaker 5 (37:13):
This and that. Our guys won't do that.

Speaker 6 (37:14):
Just a tighten it again. I'm gonna go back to
the culture. The culture of this team is great. Those
guys played hard, you know, Proud of Joe Milton. Joe
Milton went in there, you know, mop up duty, played well.
Jalen Tolbert, a guy that's fighting off for more playing time,
makes a great catch.

Speaker 2 (37:29):
You know.

Speaker 5 (37:30):
That's who we are as a football team from a
culture standpoint.

Speaker 6 (37:32):
But we have to play better. We have to execute better,
we have to coach better, got to call better plays.
And that's what we'll get started on here in about
an hour on the plane.

Speaker 1 (37:42):
All right, And what else they are is they're three
fourty one. Now we've heard Brian Schottenheimer say all season long,
you thought his team was better than what the record indicated,
although he has also you know, quoted Bill Parcels, you
are what your record says you are. So he's mentioned both.
So the question is why does he think his team

(38:03):
is better than the current three four and one record.

Speaker 6 (38:06):
Yeah, I think, you know, I see us every day,
you know, I do see us every day. I see
what we're capable of. Here's the word that's coming back again, consistency.
You know we're not very consistent. Then we have to
be more consistent. You know, last week we did a
great job stop on the run. You know, tonight we didn't,
And so therein lies a problem. Last couple of games,

(38:26):
we've been protecting the football, which has given us a chance.
Tonight we didn't. So I think we're a talented football team.
I know we're we have things to get better at
and improve on. But I do think we're a good
football team. And we played a good football team tonight
and didn't play well. And so again I'm gonna give
them credit and.

Speaker 3 (38:46):
They deserve it.

Speaker 1 (38:47):
Okay, all right, And then one more from Schottenheimer. Somebody
asked him, you know, do you need to improve the roster?
And he said, don't know that. That necessarily goes to
that and talk about trades and all that. So then
and somebody said, Well, if it's not the players that
need to improve, what is it. Well, again, I think
you know, there's been a lot of moving parts. I mean,
we're playing with a lot of different you know pieces.

(39:08):
You know, all of a sudden, you got guys in there,
we're shuffling people around, and the green dot changes and
all that stuff.

Speaker 6 (39:13):
But again, you know, we took a you know, we've
taken a couple big steps in different weeks about stopping
the run and stopping the pass and not giving up
big plays. And you know, obviously on offense, we've got
tremendous amount of weapons. Davante's you know, talented, you know,
Dak Dak is is who he is. You know, Dak
is a is an incredible player that's going to give

(39:34):
us a chance to win. And it's our job to
get the most out of those guys and continue to
put them in the right spots to play well and win.

Speaker 3 (39:41):
All right.

Speaker 1 (39:42):
There It is from Ryan Channenhammer. A little later on
this how We're here from Demico Rians a much happier tune. Yeah,
with the Texans impressive win over the San Francisco forty
nine ers. Now the Texans, I guess have had their
bye week the Cowboys, and not because the Texans are
three and four. The Cowboys are three, four and one
right correct, so in about the same place. Although remember

(40:04):
Houston started oh in three, so they won three of
their last four.

Speaker 3 (40:09):
So we'll hear from Demiko. Ryan's coming up a little
later on this hour.

Speaker 1 (40:12):
Up next more from the log worns head coach Steve
Sarkeishan here on thirteen under the zone. This is one
of the greatest rockmans of all time, Led Zeppelin, with
employing some cow bell. This was another one of the
entries there into our cow bell contest. It was not
the winning entry, but it was definitely worthy of mention.
Good times, bad time, right led Zeppelin, and then use

(40:35):
cow bell in there. It's also important too, And we
discovered this during the course of the week and doing
our cow bell contest with the winning entry earning a
pair of tickets to the Texas Vanderbilt game this Saturday,
and we'll announce that winner in the four o'clock hour.
But there's distinct sounds we know with the cow bell,

(40:57):
and there were several songs that were admitted, several in fact,
and in going through this with our resident music authority
antone like him the drummer of Whisk. Yeah, the drummer
for Whisk. He's a drummer, so he would know all
about percussion. And there were a couple of songs that
sounded a little funny, including Little Sister.

Speaker 3 (41:21):
By the What's What's what's.

Speaker 1 (41:22):
The name of that band said something it's a unusual
Queens of the Stone Age, that's it. Queens of Stone
Age had somebody submitted and come to find out, it
wasn't a cow bell. It was called an LP jam block,
like a wooden block type thing, but it was a
it was an artificial one at that. Yeah, So there
were several entries that that that folks submitted that had

(41:44):
to be disqualified because it wasn't a cow bell. That however,
what led Zeppelin used was a cowbell. But will announced, uh,
the winner's name coming up at the four o'clock hour.
Let's hear more from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkashan Sark
asked about certain players who may not necessarily show up
on the highlight reel in the recap, but who nevertheless

(42:09):
made an impact, and Sark highlighted some of those guys
on his own first guy I.

Speaker 4 (42:12):
Want to touch on is Jordan Johnson Rebel. He was
one of our players of the game on special teams.
And there's a guy who didn't play on defense. All
he did was play on special teams and had a
fantastic football game.

Speaker 7 (42:24):
You know.

Speaker 4 (42:25):
He has a great tackle on kickoff coverage on about
the twelve or thirteen yard line. He has a critical
block on the big punt return that Nibblet scores on.
So that's an easy one to touch on right off
the bat. Marshall lambwere another guy who was very critical
forcing those punts, the low line, dry punts with a
critical block on the long punt return. Lance Jackson another

(42:48):
guy you touched on who I thought, you know, it
wasn't about you know, I always say to the players,
don't count your reps, make your reps count. And you know,
he doesn't get as many reps as maybe some of
the other guys, but when he's in the game, he's impactful.
Matthew Caldwell, same thing, you know. I mean, he's an
easy one to point out. And so again there was
a lot of guys that kind of fell into that

(43:09):
into that mold in the game.

Speaker 5 (43:10):
You know, again, like Jack injuries.

Speaker 4 (43:12):
You know, he didn't have you know, seven catches for
eighty five yards, but he but he passed protected better
than he ever has for us all year.

Speaker 5 (43:20):
Saturday he had some really.

Speaker 4 (43:21):
Critical catches underneath and coverages to move the chains forward.
I thought, he's he's growing into a role that feels
very comfortable for him.

Speaker 5 (43:31):
So again, it's easy to point.

Speaker 4 (43:32):
To your to the highlight guys, but there was a
lot of guys that did some good things for Saturday
Night that we can build upon.

Speaker 1 (43:38):
Boy, you can tell that block by Marshall Land where
I mean he just flat and the guy that really
was the last obstacle to nibble it returning the punt.
The distance for the touchdown, it was that close. I
mean he really did land where the former walk on.
There now some questions about the backup quarterback because it

(43:58):
seemed like to open the vault the moment that Sark
announced that arch banning was in the protocol. So that
means you got to get the number one the number
two guy ready, which means taking reps with the number
one offense. There's all kinds of questions about Matthew Caldwell
and so the first one was what is he seeing

(44:19):
from Calwell, working with the ones in practice, and the
things that give him confidence if Caldwell indeed has to
be the one quarterbacking this team on Saturday.

Speaker 4 (44:29):
The good thing for Matt he's a very even keeled guy.
I thought he had a great practice today. I think,
you know, the players have a lot of confidence in him.
I think it's his maturity, his approach. You know, he's
very engaged even when he doesn't play. If you ever
watched our sidelines in game eighteen, is probably the most
engaged player on that sidelines. He's always picking guys up offense, defense,

(44:53):
special teams, you know, and so he's got a really
good relationship with the guys, and so I don't think
it's like, well, who's this guy. You know, he's in
a lot of faces a lot of the times, and
so it felt very comfortable. I felt very normal today.
I thought the bigger thing for today was that kJ
Lacey got reps with the twos, and I thought that
that was really good for him. You know, he's a
very talented player who's been growing and getting better, so

(45:14):
it was fun for us to see him get more
reps today.

Speaker 1 (45:16):
Okay, so then he was asked what brings about the confidence.
What does he see in Matthew Colwell that inspires confidence.

Speaker 4 (45:25):
He's a guy that has been in a variety of systems.
He has athleticism, it it was a really good ball.
What I liked about him on his visit was probably
the biggest thing was just his demeanor, you know, his
approach to it. It didn't seem too big for him here.
He didn't feel entitled by any means. He was a

(45:45):
guy who just wanted an opportunity and that's what we
were looking for, a guy who had taken some snaps
in college football.

Speaker 5 (45:51):
And then that's how he's performed, you know, since the
day he got here.

Speaker 4 (45:54):
That's the way he's worked at it throughout camp and
throughout the season, and he's making the most of his opportunities.
He's played well every time that we've put him in
the game. You know, whether it's been at the end
of games with the long runs, with the passes, whether
it's been at Florida where he had to come in
and throw a ball to Ryan Wingo on an in cut,
whether it was this game. And so, you know, what

(46:14):
gives me confidence is who he's been. You know, and
and so feel very comfortable with with Matt whenever he's
in the ball game.

Speaker 1 (46:20):
And do his players have that same vibe of confidence
coming from Caldwell.

Speaker 5 (46:25):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (46:25):
I think what he's done is earned the respect of
his teammates. Like I said, I think his demeanor, who
he is as a teammate. I think his relationship with
Arch is very important to that. I think I think
they have a lot of respect for him that way.
And then you know, when you when you produce, you
get respect too, because his teammates know that's not easy,
you know, to come in off the bench and to
do what he's done in a couple of different games.

(46:47):
And so they respect the fact that that he's prepared,
that he's ready, and that the moment's not too big
for him, you know, he's and so and I think
he's got great rapport with the guys, like I really do.
I just think he's an awesome teammate with these guys,
and so, uh, they enjoy they enjoy seeing him have
that success and celebrating with him.

Speaker 3 (47:07):
All right.

Speaker 1 (47:08):
So next he was asked about when you go into
the portal. I think it was Kirk boltrom the Houston
Chronicle asset. Are are you going for a certain look
or what are the what are the things that that
you're looking for? And did he find something more with
spreading the field more in the passing game, not necessarily, uh,
you know, going to an air raid, but did he

(47:29):
did he see something more in that?

Speaker 4 (47:30):
I think with the thing, you know, we we looked
at a few guys. You know, everybody was looking everywhere.
I mean, everybody's trying to figure out who's your backup whatnot.
And it's hard to, I think, in this day and
age to keep multiple really you know, high level, five
star type quarterbacks.

Speaker 5 (47:44):
So you got to look around.

Speaker 4 (47:45):
I think no more is more telling than what old
miss you know, figured out with their guy. And so,
you know, it was just felt like the right fit
honestly with Matt, you know, for us passing game wise,
that was what was in the moment, you know, and
we've we challenged, oddly enough, we challenged the receivers and

(48:08):
the quarterbacks Friday night about the way we needed to
play the game. And I played a fair amount of
older clips, some from here of other players, some from
the last place I was at with some of those players,
and some from the current guys on this team of
similar plays we wanted to run and how they needed
to be ran, and that was the expectation, right, That's

(48:30):
why they were brought here. And to those guys credit,
they really responded. And they didn't play perfect, you know,
there's there's there's plays they that they'd love to have back,
but man, they competed and they played fast. And we're
at our best when we play fast on the perimeter.
Uh and then when the quarterback trust that play speed
that they're playing with. And I thought Art showed a
lot of trust in those guys Saturday and and their

(48:53):
play speed and their play making showed up. You know,
Like I said, there was a couple of those those
first those two touchdown catches by Parker and Emmett. I mean,
those are elite catches. Those are about as high level
catches as you can make in the red area tight quarters.
Any bobble in either one of those is not a touchdown.
And so the ability to make those strong catches were big,

(49:15):
and that just builds confidence and that builds trust for
the quarterback.

Speaker 3 (49:18):
All right.

Speaker 1 (49:19):
Next he was asked and it was our own Roger Wallace,
my broadcast partner in the long War Games asked this
question about the emotional shift.

Speaker 3 (49:26):
They've been on the road for a month.

Speaker 1 (49:29):
In fact, the total count on days between home games
will actually be forty two days in between home games,
one against Sam Houston and then this one. And so
Roger asked him about the possibility of an emotional shift
getting hyped up or a home game.

Speaker 3 (49:47):
How you compartmentalize all that stuff.

Speaker 4 (49:49):
I think there's a fine line, you know, and games
like this, I listen to other coaches talk a lot
of the time about relying on the fans to provide
the energy into the stadium. And I know Longhorn Nation
is going to show up Saturday at eleven am, and
but we need to make sure we provide energy for
them too. And and part of that is our is
our style of play, the how the speed in which

(50:13):
we play, with the violence in which we play the
game with you know, that keeps the crowd energized.

Speaker 5 (50:17):
And so it's a two way street there.

Speaker 4 (50:19):
And so we can't just go into this thinking, Hey,
we're at home and now we got our fans and
everything's going to be great.

Speaker 5 (50:25):
No, they're just a They're an added bonus. We still
need to play.

Speaker 4 (50:29):
You know our brand, our style of football against a
very good football team.

Speaker 1 (50:32):
Okay, all right, next uh, he was asked about kJ Lacey.
Remember kJ, he's the third quarterback. Now if if Arch
Banning is unable to play, that he becomes the second
string quarterback. At least he's taken the snaps with the twos,
and so Sark was asked, what has kJ Lacey's shown
him to earn that number two spot.

Speaker 5 (50:53):
Yeah, he's done a great job. You know, I think
one thing with kJ.

Speaker 4 (50:59):
Every time we've been in scrimmage settings and things of
that nature, call it periods on Mondays, we do a
lot of work when it's twos on twos, threes on
threes and we let these guys play. He really performs
at a high level. He's a gamer. He's got a
natural feel for passing the ball. He's got a natural
feel in the pocket and anticipating throws.

Speaker 5 (51:20):
He uses his legs really well.

Speaker 4 (51:23):
And so to that point, it was like, man, I
can feel like man, more of this guy grows within
our system, he's going to really elevate his game as
he continues to go. And that's what he's done. You know,
he's continued to improve. I do think he's got good rapport,
especially with those younger receivers. Those are the guys he
throws to a lot, But there's there's great rapport that
he has with those guys, and the ball moves forward

(51:44):
when he plays, and he's a lot more vocal guy
in those moments on the field than he is off
the field, And so I know what's in there and
so very encouraged by what he's done up until this point.

Speaker 1 (51:56):
Okay, all right, Next, he was asked about Vanderbilt being
a team with an old team, as you might say,
a lot of guys with some veteran experience on that.
It was asked about what advantage there is to that
and would you like to get it to that point?
Of course, this gets into things like transfer portal and
guys coming in. Is that something that Sark would ultimately

(52:17):
like to have at ut.

Speaker 4 (52:19):
It's probably somewhat at an advantage regardless of the system.
You know, veteran players guys who have you know, have
seen more things in game, able to make maybe quicker
adjustments in game. Are some advantages to that. Older, stronger,
you know, things like that. You know, it's such a
fine line. We want to recruit high school really, really well,

(52:41):
and you know, for as long as I can remember,
you know, being at Alabama or being on some of
the best teams, when when you recruit really well and
players perform well, a lot of them leave early to
go to the draft. When you recruit well and maybe
players aren't playing quite as much as they would like,
they want an opportunity to play, they leave too. Guys transfer,

(53:02):
and then you try to recruit really good high school kids,
and so you you know, one of the drawbacks of
that is, yeah, we're one of the younger teams in
the country, and so there's always that fine line of Okay,
do you take more transfers. You know, there was a
reason we took so many, you know, interior defensive linemen transfers,
and we tried to get older there a little quicker,

(53:24):
and so I guess it's kind of on a yearly
basis of where you're at as a team and what
type of leadership you have and where's your maturity. But
I don't know if will Effort be one of the
older teams in the country. You know, I think we'll
probably if we can continue to do what we've been doing,
We'll always be on the younger side, but I think,
you know, it's always nice to get older at key

(53:44):
spots when when you can through the portal.

Speaker 1 (53:47):
And one final thing here from Sar talking about him
at Moseley's two big touchdown catches and how he has
ramped up once he got healthy. Uh, to be kind
of a guy emerging. Maybe how Matthew Golden did in
the second part of the season.

Speaker 5 (54:02):
Yeah, No, I thought it was big for emmittt you know.

Speaker 4 (54:04):
I mean this has been a tough, tough go for him,
you know, with the injury basically all throughout training camp
and early point of the season, and a guy that
that just didn't have the exposure to the offense and
didn't have those those those you know, thousands of reps
with arch and catching balls and so finding his stride,
finding his rhythm I think has been big. I think

(54:27):
we all can see the talent now, all the things
we were talking about. As much as it was a
great catch by him on that fade ball, was the
release that he used at the line of scrimmage to
create separation. I don't think we've gotten the best version
of him yet. I think he's even a better blocker
than we've gotten, which is a big component of why
he's here.

Speaker 3 (54:46):
But he is.

Speaker 4 (54:47):
He is a very talented player. He's got the right
mindset and approach to it all. I think he's got
good rapport in that room and those top four guys
I think really work well together. And it's been a
nice rotation for us with Ryan Emmett Parker and then
with DeAndre in the slot and with Dalen being kind

(55:07):
of that fifth guy.

Speaker 5 (55:08):
And so this is kind of what we were hoping for.
It took a little longer to get to this point.

Speaker 4 (55:13):
Same thing at running back, right, It's taking a little
longer to get Cedric and Trey and there together.

Speaker 5 (55:19):
But that doesn't mean it can't hit right for us now.

Speaker 4 (55:21):
And so we've got to push that and we've got
to be aggressive with that of finding that right mix
of guys and playmakers and how we're utilizing in game.

Speaker 3 (55:29):
All Right, We'll hear more from Sara coming up next hour.

Speaker 1 (55:33):
Up next from Demico, Ryan's who coached a winter with
the Texans yesterday, when we continue on thirteen under the
Zone in the iHeartRadio app. This was another one of

(55:53):
the submissions in our cow Bell contest, and you heard
it at the start, but then it's kind of kind
of pushed to the back of the room after that.
But I can't hear working for the weekend out without
thinking of the Saturday Night Live skit with Chris Farley,
the Chippendale's Dance or Try Out.

Speaker 3 (56:14):
Awesome. It's one of the great skits of all time.

Speaker 1 (56:17):
Invest and now him and Patrick Swayzey right beside each
other in a dance off company.

Speaker 2 (56:22):
I'll have to watch that one.

Speaker 3 (56:23):
Oh, it's one of the greatest ones of all time.

Speaker 2 (56:25):
You know, it's almost time for a good old rewatcher
David Pumpkins.

Speaker 1 (56:29):
Yeah, we're getting close to that, aren't we. Yeah, maybe
it should be on Saturday night of this weekend. All right,
let's hear from Houston Texans head coach Demico Ryans what
an impressive performance they had in on twenty six fifteen
win over San Francisco yesterday.

Speaker 3 (56:45):
Here's Ryan's opening thoughts.

Speaker 7 (56:47):
Really thankful as always, it's not about us, and it's
time to get this opportunity to just make sure I
give glory where his due. And as to our Lord,
to say to Jesus Christ for continue to bless us
over and over again, is nothing that we've done to
be blessed. But we got it. We got We were
thankful for the grace and the love that we were shown.
Just think I'm proud of all of our guys for

(57:09):
the way they showed up and played today. Just a
truly complete game, starting with the offense, the way and
we ran the football, controlled the line of scrimmage. The
offensive line did a great job. We were able to
help control the ball for forty one minutes, which is
huge for us, and ran the ball well. CJ had
an outstanding game just all around. You talk about really

(57:30):
good offensive performance. Guys did a great job all right.

Speaker 3 (57:33):
So then he was asked what was the biggest difference
this week as opposed to last week.

Speaker 7 (57:39):
And for this week the main thing. Our guys just
went out and everybody was I would say locked in.
Everybody had laser focused on their job what we needed
to do. Guys made the plays we were supposed to make.
I thought CJ made great decisions with the football when
it wasn't there, checking the ball.

Speaker 5 (57:58):
Down to the backs, played well. We ran the ball
for over one hundred yards.

Speaker 7 (58:03):
It starts up front always and when our offensive line
can do that, control the line of scrimmats things will
go well for us, but overall could be more proud Defensively,
they also did an outstanding job getting great team over there.

Speaker 5 (58:16):
Those guys made two really big plays on us.

Speaker 7 (58:18):
Kidel and Jennis made some outstanding catches on us, and
that happens, but our guys were resilient. They continue to
bounce back. They didn't let one big play affect him.
They were still able to come out and continue to
press forward, play together and finish the.

Speaker 1 (58:33):
Game all right, So how important was it for the
Texas to get off to the good start that they did, And.

Speaker 7 (58:39):
For me, what I'm most proud of is how we
finished the game. We've had some good starts, but we
haven't finished well in games and that's been the key
for us. It is the second half and how we
finish in the second half, That's what I'm most proud of.

Speaker 1 (58:52):
There.

Speaker 7 (58:53):
Anytime you punt the football one time, that's controlling the game.

Speaker 5 (58:56):
So it's a great job. And when Tommy did Ponty
had a good punt for us.

Speaker 1 (59:00):
They really kept Christian McCaffrey largely in check and he
was asked for how they were able to pull that.

Speaker 7 (59:06):
Off and Christians, a great player, phenomenal player. Talked about
it all throughout the week, and we knew we had
to stop him. Run game, passing game. We knew he
would be their highest targeted guy, and we were able
to hold him. I don't think he had got many
yards today, but it was a collective effort from everyone,
starting with the defensive line really disrupting the run game

(59:27):
up front, and then I think we tackled really well
and he had a couple of check downs there in
the two minute drive, But overall thought we tackled really
well versus a really great player.

Speaker 1 (59:37):
Yeah, they didn't have Nico Collins, he wasn't available, but
Xavier Hutchinson had a big game.

Speaker 3 (59:42):
They had several guys who contributed, and so.

Speaker 1 (59:44):
He was asked about his faults on his wide receivers
played without Collins in the lineup, a lot.

Speaker 7 (59:49):
Of young guys stepped up and make plays. It's Noel Higgins,
Jerry Wayne stepped up, Burry, all of our receivers. All
those guys showed up, and not just in the past.
The way we ran the football, the receivers have to block,
so they did a great job of blocking as well.
Coach McDaniel's done a great job with those guys, having
them prepared, and that's what I talk about. That's what

(01:00:09):
the league is about. It doesn't matter who's out there.
If you do what your coach would do, you do
it the right way. You do it with a relentless mindset,
like we can go out and we can play well
versus anyone.

Speaker 5 (01:00:20):
The receiver showed up big time today, all.

Speaker 1 (01:00:22):
Right, And then he was asked about the improvement of
the offense and his faith and his offensive coordinator, Nick Kaylee,
amidst all the outside noise going on, Kayley.

Speaker 5 (01:00:32):
Did a great job.

Speaker 7 (01:00:33):
Yeah, today, and he's done a great job with you know,
with what we were asking him to do. He's doing
a great job. He has the guys, The guys have
his back. Everybody's in this together, right from Kaylee myself
to play. We're all in this thing together. So it
really doesn't matter about outside noise. And we hear a
lot of that every time you lose. Everybody wants to

(01:00:54):
come up with something of get rid of everybody.

Speaker 5 (01:00:57):
Fire. Everybody lose a game, you go out, don't play well.

Speaker 7 (01:01:00):
It was just the noise is just a lot of
people who don't know what they're talking about because here
in this room as a team, we stick together as
a team, and we know it's only about us, right,
and you never let the outside noise creep in and
control who we are. We know who we are, we
know what we're about, we know the formula, we know
what it takes to go win games, and we just

(01:01:21):
understand that the outside noise is just noise. We would
never go ask anybody who's given the noise. We will
never go ask them their opinion about how the game
plan or how to play football. So we keep that
in house and we go we press forward, and we
go out and play good football. That's what it's about,
all right. So the Texans are three and four.

Speaker 1 (01:01:41):
We mentioned the Cowboys are three four and one, technically
by nine one thousands of a percentage point, a better
record than Washington. But the Commanders can change that if
they can beat Kansas City night, because the Cowboys are
three four and one and the Commanders are three and four.

Speaker 2 (01:01:55):
Yeah, season defining few games for Washington. They've got, obviously
Kansas City to night, followed by a home game against Seattle,
who will be coming off of bye by the way, yep, Well, rested,
good Seattle team, and then they've got to go play Detroit,
who might still feel some type of way about the
way the divisional round went a season ago.

Speaker 1 (01:02:15):
Yeah, we'll see, all right, we'll be back to wrap
a bower in number two right here on thirteen out
of the town from Davis Wade Stadium and starting build Mississippi.
It's the Texas Long Warns against the Mississippi State pulldofs
first down to ten to the Long Horns to the left,
hash at the Texas thirty seven on first half, quick
swing passouse the flat, turning up field to the forty

(01:02:36):
forty five did field.

Speaker 3 (01:02:37):
This is Wing go to the forty thirty five.

Speaker 1 (01:02:40):
Likes a tackle down the twenty put ten and inside
the five yard line.

Speaker 3 (01:02:44):
Ryan wingo quick swing pass and he runs it all
the way down to the three yard line.

Speaker 1 (01:02:49):
That goes for sixty yards, handing out of the piscol
set on first and gold at the three turns and
keeps it itself running outside cuts, inside touchdowns, Texas arch
manning across the goal line and the law.

Speaker 3 (01:03:03):
Hoorns draw on the board.

Speaker 1 (01:03:04):
Less than two minutes into the game, Bulldogs to go
for it on four down, it's a hand up. It's
not enough that log horn gee event stands come several
long horns, Johnnie McDonald's Leanga Lafoul, Colin Simmons, among others.

Speaker 3 (01:03:18):
It'll be a turnover on downs as the Longhorns.

Speaker 1 (01:03:22):
Stone Mississippi State inside their thirty eight yard line, bird
and goal inside the one, Manning to take the staff
from under center, has.

Speaker 3 (01:03:31):
It, rolls to the right, grows to the end zone.

Speaker 1 (01:03:33):
Got touchdown Texas Parker Livingston on third and goal.

Speaker 3 (01:03:38):
A little roll out and Manning.

Speaker 1 (01:03:40):
Finds Livingston pull a touchdown that puts Texas.

Speaker 3 (01:03:43):
Back in front.

Speaker 1 (01:03:43):
Banning from the gun with the staff which swing pass
Alswinga breaks it up till forty five midfield till the
forty five to the forty bryant of the thirty, twenty five,
twenty to the fifteen and inside the Mississippi State fifteen
yard line down to the fourteen before Kelly Jones can
wrap him up. Pick up a forty seven yards on
third down, shotgun staff to Manning under some pressure, scrambles

(01:04:06):
looks coach deep down, Phil, where's got wing go?

Speaker 3 (01:04:08):
He got it fifteen ten and the five and down
to the three yard line.

Speaker 1 (01:04:14):
Manning had to make that happen on the running Who's
being flushed out and then hung one deep for sixty
two yards to Ryan Wingo Porsman Gold Texas at the
Mississippi State six yard line, banning out of the shotgun
has the staff arch rolls right, look still waks fires
for the end song. It was bought out of mounds
by Livingston. He thought he dragged a foot in and one.

(01:04:35):
Officials talking to him about it right now, and know
what are they gonna say? They're still talking about this
for the moment. It's an incomplete pass, so brially on
the field, a receiver have possession of the ball with
one foot in bounds.

Speaker 3 (01:04:49):
Touchdown.

Speaker 1 (01:04:50):
It is a touchdown for Parker Livingston on cent and
down and ten from the Bulldog twenty one.

Speaker 3 (01:04:56):
Manning's a staff, look's the throw?

Speaker 1 (01:04:58):
What's coming is he throws down Phil He's got mostly there,
sliding cats touchdown Texas him and Moosey pulls it in
for his first Texas Longhorn touchdown, a twenty one yard catch.

Speaker 3 (01:05:10):
They go to punt on pour down. Here's the stamp
pressure coming.

Speaker 4 (01:05:14):
The kick is.

Speaker 1 (01:05:15):
Away nibblin back peddling a huge kick hands.

Speaker 3 (01:05:19):
On his own twenty one, turns up field, Nibble at twenty.

Speaker 1 (01:05:21):
Five, turns up field to the thirty and then steps
out of tackle thirty five forty. Here's Dibblin to Niptim
crying down.

Speaker 3 (01:05:27):
The sidelines, say good night to this one. He's done
it again. Ryan Neblin a seventy nine yard up return.

Speaker 1 (01:05:37):
Banning under center. Find it's a goal line and he'll
push out and that'll do it for regulation. So this
thing is going to go to overtime. Hard Well from
the shot gout, has the stamps, turns fires for the
zo for mostly get he catch it no dust out

(01:05:58):
of the insong.

Speaker 5 (01:05:59):
There and do it up there.

Speaker 3 (01:06:01):
It's incomplete after video review. Drueling his touchdown.

Speaker 5 (01:06:05):
Yes, controlled the ball with one foot in bounds. He'll
be a try for Texas.

Speaker 1 (01:06:11):
Touchdown catch of ten yards. That's Matthew Coldwell's first touchdown
pass as a long horn, fourth down and twenty for Mississippi,
State of the Texas thirty five yard line.

Speaker 3 (01:06:22):
It overtime.

Speaker 1 (01:06:23):
Lake shaping out of the shotgun half the step back
to throw being pressured, scrambles right.

Speaker 3 (01:06:29):
Scrambles left downy does this ball.

Speaker 1 (01:06:32):
Game is over the Texas Longhorns have come from behind
to beat the Mississippi State bold Arks in overtime, forty
five to thirty eight. And with that the Longhorns with
the win and moving forward in Texas, now getting ready

(01:06:53):
for the Vanderbilt Commodores. We welcoming back to the program
here on this Monday afternoon on Sports RADIOA in thirteen
under the Zone Craig Way joined by the producer Jay Carmon,
and glad to have you with us, so we'll hear
more from Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian coming up in
a few minutes. We've brought you, of course, his weekly

(01:07:14):
news conference live this morning here on Sports Radio AM
thirteen under the Zone. It's part of our Longhorns Monday
presentation from the UT campus, and we always bring you
the news conference on money and then we bring it
to you kind of in the scale down version where
you actually hear all of the comments from sark So

(01:07:34):
you'll hear that more from him coming up in a
few minutes as they get ready for this Vanderbilt team.
It's number nine in the country now and is listed
in some college football playoff projections as being the number
nine team in the CFP. We'll go down the list

(01:07:54):
of all of that as well. Jay Carmon, are you
ready for Monday Night football, which is inclusive of your
Washington Commanders.

Speaker 2 (01:08:06):
Well, I will be watching it on a very small screen,
so hopefully it makes me feel some very small feelings.
If things go the way I expect, which is not
well against the Kansas City team that looks to be
playing great football, I'll be learning the ropes behind the
scenes for the women's basketball game, so I'm ready to
be hurt. At the risk of sounding like our good

(01:08:27):
friend Cam Parker, my expectations are low.

Speaker 1 (01:08:30):
Yeah, I understand that, and Cam's low expectations were certainly
met by the Cowboys yesterday, so that's understandable. But yes,
Jake will be here. Who are you shadowing tonight? Who's
our studio producer tonight for the women's.

Speaker 2 (01:08:47):
Game, It'll be col Dixon? Okay, all right, Jack of
all trades back, Yes.

Speaker 1 (01:08:51):
He is, so Cole, we'll be in here that I
will bring you the women's basketball exhibition finale tonight against
Texas Women's University. You think that's just a a tomato?
Can understand this first of all by NCAA rules, you're
required if you play exhibition games to play. If you're
a Division one program, you are required to play a

(01:09:13):
Division two school or a Division three school, or even
an NAI school.

Speaker 3 (01:09:17):
That has to be one of those.

Speaker 1 (01:09:18):
Uh, it can't be a Division one school unless it
is a one off game for charity and h and
to be truthful, Uh, there was going to be one
of those scheduled. Texas was actually going to play a
road game for charity in a charitable situation at Memphis,

(01:09:39):
and it was going to be tonight. And the original
plan was, I was just going to go straight from
Startingville over to Memphis. I was going to drive over
there because that's about let's see, well we were staying
in two plows, so that's about two hour drive.

Speaker 3 (01:09:51):
It wouldn't that big a deal.

Speaker 2 (01:09:52):
So you would have gone from Elvis' birthplace, yeah, to.

Speaker 1 (01:09:57):
Where he passed away on on the throne, the way
the story goes down about Elvis.

Speaker 5 (01:10:05):
That's true.

Speaker 3 (01:10:07):
It's been largely corroborated. Yeah, that's where it happened. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:10:11):
So I mean you expend a lot of energy, you know,
when you're on the throne, and his heart couldn't handle it.
Was the way that I had heard and read about it,
But in any event, it ended up not happening. For
whatever reasons, it didn't work out for both teams, so
there was no exhibition game in Memphis, so instead they
were able to schedule a second Division two team, Texas

(01:10:34):
Women's University. Now, last Monday, the Longhorns played Love a Christian,
which was a team that made the Elite eight of
the NCAA Division two Women's Basketball Tournament last year. And
in that NCAA tournament they were the number two seed.

(01:10:54):
The number one seed that they knocked out was Texas
Women's University ended up going thirty three and two last year,
So that's it's it's a good solid program. They I
think we're in the Division two National Championship game a
couple of years back. To've been in the national turn
in the past few years. So if you're going to
play a Division two team, play one near the top,
you know, So that's that'll be the case. The Long

(01:11:16):
Ruins didn't have any trouble will Love a Christian last
Monday night, and I wouldn't imagine they'd have much trouble tonight.
It'll be interesting to see who's available who can play, uh,
you know how much if there's some players that are that.

Speaker 3 (01:11:30):
Are limited and won't be able to give them.

Speaker 1 (01:11:32):
I know Ashton Judd is out right now, probably until
at least the end of November with that fracture she
had in her kneecap. She's the Missouri transfer who, by
the way, was their leading score when they played Texas
here in Austin at Moody Center last year, and it
was a ballgame. Missouri led at the half before Texas
pulled away in the second half. In Ashton jud had
a lot to do with it, but she she will

(01:11:52):
not be available for that so for that game, but
otherwise I think most everybody will be available and we'll
bring it to you. Tonight six forty five is the
pregame start time and the tip off at seven o'clock
from Moody Center, Texas against Texas Women's University, the final
exhibition game. It is a week from tonight that the

(01:12:14):
women will open their season. The regular season opener is
one week from tonight against the University of the Incarnate
Word UIW. They'll play them at home. The men's season
opener is a week from tomorrow night. That's in Charlotte
North Carolina at the Spectrum Center. They're going to play Duke,
one of the top rated teams in the country. So
that's quite a tall task and the debut as head

(01:12:36):
coach of the Longgorns for Sean Miller. But that's a
week from tomorrow night. That's a seven o'clock are The
tip is gonna be around seven to forty five Central
Time on that one. So that's to let you know
what's going on with the basketball. Obviously, you just heard
the football montage, the highlight montage with Texas getting passed
in Mississippi State. All right here on a Monday, he

(01:13:02):
Long Worn's Monday a victory mondays, they like to say
on campus when we get a win. And Texas did
survive that contest of the weekend with Mississippi State, and
now they get ready for the Vanderbilt Commodores, number nine
team in the country coming in. I made this comment
this morning in our live coverage of Sarks press conference

(01:13:25):
from the UT campus, and that was.

Speaker 3 (01:13:29):
That it seems to be.

Speaker 1 (01:13:33):
And again I take some of this with a grain
of salt because of social media and everything. But if
you're following on social media, a lot of things. The
vibe you may get is that there are many fans,
not just long worn fans, but fans across the country,
but certainly long worn fans are included in this group

(01:13:54):
people who still are not buying Vanderbilt as one of
the better football teams country. They had one loss that
was to Alabama at Alabama. It was a competitive game
until the fourth quarter. And of course last year they
beat Alabama, they had they had a landmark season and
now they're doing even better this year. They have a gritty,

(01:14:17):
gutty inspirational quarterback in Diego Pavia. They have a gritty
gutty inspirational head coaching, Clark Lee.

Speaker 3 (01:14:24):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:14:24):
They won a gritty gutty game just Saturday. It was
a lot like the Longhorns win at Kentucky. Missouri won
a lot of the underlying battles but just couldn't convert
their chances.

Speaker 1 (01:14:34):
Yeah, and Vanderbilt ended up escaping with that win. So
against that backdrop, there's a lot of people are still
not that convinced about them.

Speaker 3 (01:14:46):
I can tell you this.

Speaker 1 (01:14:49):
Steve Sarkisan is convinced that they're really good, and his
players are convinced that they're good.

Speaker 3 (01:14:53):
Whether fans are not. But anyway, let's let's hear some
more about Sark.

Speaker 1 (01:14:57):
He was asked a question and this isn't doesn't necessarily
specifically pertain to Vanderbilt, although it's fair to say the
Commodores have a lot of their roster built through the portal.
Diego Pavia came through the portal from New Mexico State.
A lot of the guys have. And that was the

(01:15:19):
case with the Mississippi State team they faced. That was
the case with the Kentucky team they faced.

Speaker 3 (01:15:23):
That was the team.

Speaker 1 (01:15:25):
That was the team with the Oklahoma team they faced,
that was the case. Teams are being built.

Speaker 5 (01:15:30):
More and more through the portal.

Speaker 2 (01:15:32):
Loghorns, of course, have their own portal.

Speaker 1 (01:15:36):
Influencers, their own portal contributors. Think about this. The last
offensive play of the game on Saturday night was a
pass thrown from a portal transfer to a receiver from
the portal transfer Matthew Caldwell to Emmitt Mosley for the touchdown.
There So, all of these programs are utilizing the portal,

(01:15:59):
and Sark was ask, uh, you know, is it when
when you look at a roster like Vanderbilts or even
other teams the components.

Speaker 3 (01:16:07):
Of the roster building.

Speaker 1 (01:16:08):
Has that dynamic changed or is it really still pretty
much the same thing, even in this new era of
n I l on the portal and the like.

Speaker 5 (01:16:18):
I think it's.

Speaker 4 (01:16:19):
I think it's there's a lot of ways to skin
a cat when it comes to building a roster, you know.
And I just still believe in developing players in your program.
I still believe in recruiting high level high school kids.

Speaker 5 (01:16:36):
Uh. And we can here at the University of Texas.

Speaker 4 (01:16:39):
You know, we're very fortunate we've got a tremendous product
to sell to parents, to to student athletes, to to
high school coaches, UH, to agents for that matter nowadays.
And then and then you lean into your developmental process,
whether it's in the weight room, on the football field,
in the classroom, UH, whether forever Texas program as men

(01:16:59):
and we see the benefits of those guys that come
into our program and where they get to and where
they get to go, but whether it's further in their
playing career in the NFL or in life and opportunities
in and around austin the state of Texas and around
the country. On the same token, on the flip side,
there's opportunities in the portal that you can tap into.

(01:17:20):
And there's plenty of schools around the country that they
live in the portal and they do a great job
in the portal. And I don't know Clark's roster well
enough to speak on his. And Vanderbilt's done a great
They've built the heck of a roster. But there's schools
that live that way. I'm just not of the mindset
of living there.

Speaker 7 (01:17:38):
Now.

Speaker 4 (01:17:38):
We do portal recruit, but I just think it's really
hard to recreate our culture every year when you're bringing
in thirty new faces from other schools who have learned
a certain way. I can bring in five to ten
every year, and I can get them assimulated to our
culture because it's so strong. But the moment you start

(01:17:59):
going higher than that, whose culture is it?

Speaker 3 (01:18:02):
Right?

Speaker 4 (01:18:02):
Am I getting some other schools culture is at ours?
And I think about guys like Cole Barvard. I think
about guys like hero Canoe. I think about em at
Moseley who now they're making our culture even better because
they've bought into it, they've grown within it, and they
realize the power of it. And so there's a fine line.

(01:18:24):
I just know that where our balance is, and there's
gonna be years. Right. Some years we may take four
or five or six transfers. Other years it might be eight, nine, ten, eleven.
And I get it just depends on what do we
need as a team. But at our core, our culture
is so important. I just don't think I can go, Hey,
we're just going to the portal and we're going to
roll the dice and hope they all work out, because

(01:18:45):
they don't all work out, and when they when transfers
don't work out, that's when you end up with disgruntled
employees in your locker room because why did I leave
the last spot? If I just came here and I'm
not doing what you said I was potentially to do well,
they have to do their part two and and that's
why we're so selective when it comes to the portal.
We've been very fortunate. We haven't been perfect, but for

(01:19:07):
the most part, it's gone pretty good for us.

Speaker 1 (01:19:11):
Next up, Sarcus asked the question about Michael taff and Michael,
of course is out with the broken thumb, had had
it surgically repaired.

Speaker 3 (01:19:22):
Don't know how long he'll be out. What was out
last Saturday? He'll be out again this week.

Speaker 1 (01:19:28):
But taff did play a role in the game on
Saturday when the game moved overtime and the team had
to send out captains for the coin toss for overtime.
It was not an active player in the game who
went out for Texas. It was Michael Taffy's were in
a game jersey, but he had hit pants on and
street clothes on and walked out. Michael called tails, it

(01:19:52):
was heads. Mississippi State won the toss, electing and goal
in defense. Long words, wind up getting that big time down,
the great to tap touchdown for him at mostly and
then of course they get the big defensive stop. Well
Sark was asked about Michael Taff's impact, not necessarily just
on that coin flip, mainly about what he does with
his teammates and the sideline. I knew he would be

(01:20:14):
on the trip obviously, even though he wasn't going to
be able to play. So what about his impact from
the sidelines during the game.

Speaker 4 (01:20:21):
His leadership is tremendous, you know, Michael. It was almost
back to where he was day one when he first
got here, when he was the walkdown that wasn't going
to play. He didn't change. You know, he believed, he
was confident, he knew the defense. He was always a
guy that picked other people up, and so he just
went right back into being Michael taff the guy that
wasn't playing. And you know, he's obviously earned a lot

(01:20:43):
more respect over time to where he is today than
where he was five years ago. But he's got a
ton of respect. He's constantly communicating with those guys, you know.
So I don't think it was very difficult for him.
It was just kind of natural, And I don't think
it felt odd to the players that that Taff was
in their face, you know, talking about adjustments or how

(01:21:04):
we needed to play. And so again, I just felt
it was kind of natural.

Speaker 5 (01:21:09):
For him to do what he did. He could probably
a great coach someday.

Speaker 4 (01:21:12):
I hope he goes and does something way bigger than
being a coach, right He deserves more than that than
do what the heck I'm doing right now, that's for sure.

Speaker 1 (01:21:21):
Okay, he's a pretty smart dude. Both of those guys
are sark Is and obviously Michael taff Is as well. Next,
speaking of smart guys, sark was asked about his decision.

Speaker 3 (01:21:35):
To have A. J.

Speaker 1 (01:21:36):
Milwey, the quarterbacks coach. He'd been on the sidelines, go
up to the press box. Now, let me tell you something,
And that's what happened last Saturday. On the surface, I'm
like any other long worn football fan or somebody's following
this thing. I happen to call the games for a living,

(01:22:00):
and I do try to learn all I can about
the team, but I usually kind of draw a line
on such topics as one assistant coach moving from the
sidelines up to the press box. If you want to
know the truth, to me, that's a lot of booger eating,
is what that is. I mean, that's really deep, deep

(01:22:23):
dive stuff. And to be fair, it was asked by
somebody who works for a fan site, so they dive
into a lot of those things. So I don't begrudge
that at all. It's just normally not something that I
would think of. Oh, I got to ask that question
in the news conference.

Speaker 2 (01:22:37):
Yeah, when an offense is under a microscope, you look
at everything.

Speaker 1 (01:22:40):
Yeah, yeah, you do, and clearly this coaching staff does.
And Sark had a really interesting answer because it involves
the one of the newer members of the coaching staff,
Michael Bamonte, who is now working with the offensive staff
and the quarterbacks as well.

Speaker 3 (01:22:53):
Listen to this. You know, Aj.

Speaker 4 (01:22:57):
Obviously was a coordinator in his past at Akron, and
then you know, we were together at Alabama for a
couple of years and had really good rapport there, and
when we first got here, he was up top.

Speaker 6 (01:23:08):
And then.

Speaker 4 (01:23:12):
I'm trying to think if it was two years ago,
a year I don't remember the time. I felt like
Quinn needed to have somebody on the sidelines with him
to really talk to because I just wasn't as accessible
being the head coach and doing that.

Speaker 5 (01:23:23):
So we brought him down and there was.

Speaker 4 (01:23:25):
Great rapport there. And in our five years here, Mike
Bamonte has been in our program. He was an analyst
when he first got here, and now, because there's no
limitations on coaches, you know, we made him the assistant
quarterback coach this offseason, and Mike has always been up
top over the past couple of years, and so as

(01:23:46):
as the season went on, I just felt like, man
Aj knows me so well, We've been together so long
that I felt like some of the information from him
was going to be helpful for me in game and
real time and allow him to watch the game as
opposed to being on the sidelines with the same view
that I had. On the flip side of that, I
thought Mike could provide a little more energy and juice.

(01:24:09):
He's got great rapport with all of our players, not
only Arch, but all of those guys on offense, and
so I thought it was a win win and going
into it, and it proved that way. I thought AJ
was very helpful for me on game day being up top.
I also think Mike Mamonte was very helpful for our
players in the midst of the adversity we were getting
faced with. I thought his energy was really helpful, and

(01:24:32):
in turn, I don't think we missed anything with the
communication with the arch on the sidelines and making adjustments
and the iPads and things like that.

Speaker 1 (01:24:41):
Next up, Stark was asked about the fact they've just
completed this month long sojourn away from DKR Texas Memorial Stadium.
By the way, I always feel compelled to phrase it
like that because there are some people outside of the
realm and say, well, you know you were the designated
the home team for diploma. Yeah, get all that, understand

(01:25:02):
all of that. But if you just say they didn't
have a home game all that night. There are people go, well,
you were the home team for Oklumba. We can get
all that understand it. We're talking about playing away from
DKR basically an entire month of October road trip, the
game at Florida, then the OU game in Dallas, still
a road game away from Austin, then to Kentucky, then

(01:25:24):
the Mississippi State. So Sark was asked what did he
find out about his team and his staff of that matter,
on that tough road stretch.

Speaker 4 (01:25:33):
You know what what I found out is we are
a really close group. We're a tight knit group, and
these guys, you know what I enjoy about football. This
is the ultimate team sport. And it's not just about
the saturdays on you know, when the balls kicked off.
It's it's all the time that we spend together, and

(01:25:55):
it's it's all walks of life coming together, pulling for
a common goal, being commit to a common goal, picking
each other up, supporting one another.

Speaker 5 (01:26:04):
And this team does that. And you know, you look
at that locker room.

Speaker 4 (01:26:09):
After the Kentucky game, and and and how that defense
never once pointed one finger at the offense and picked
those guys up that were a team to this locker
room this weekend, to the offense pointing out to the
defense getting those stops and how critical they were.

Speaker 5 (01:26:26):
That's that's what I love about this group.

Speaker 4 (01:26:28):
It's it's the connectivity or this is the closest coaching
staff that we've had. You know, these guys are these
guys are in it together. We've got great rapport with
one another. They've got great connection of the players. The
players have great connection with one another. I feel like
there's not a guy on the team that if he
had an issue wouldn't come to me, and so I
feel like my connection to them is very close. And

(01:26:49):
so that's the part you love in general about coaching.
But that's what we've created with this team, and this
team's had its own unique challenges. We're not perfect, but
that that is definitely the part that I do love.

Speaker 1 (01:27:01):
Next up, Sark was asked about Ryan Niblett and the
fact that he's been on the street. He had the
punt return seventy five yards against Oklahoma. Then of course
he had the two big returns that set up long
Orange scores against Kentucky and then the seventy nine yarder
last Saturday night, he was asked, is he surprised that
people are still kicking to him.

Speaker 4 (01:27:19):
It's easy to say, don't punt it to him, right,
but you risk the challenge of hey, we're gonna punt
it out of bounds.

Speaker 5 (01:27:26):
Well, now are you gonna.

Speaker 4 (01:27:27):
You're gonna be okay with a twenty yard punt if
he doesn't hit it perfect. And so I think, you know,
the people are trying to directional punt, we're trying to
be creative and how we're rushing punters and how we're
blocking people and doing different things. And a credit to
coach Banks with that. I think that group, in general,
confidence is a very powerful thing, and that group is
very confident, not just Ryan, all eleven guys are playing

(01:27:50):
a very confident brand of football and they're maximizing their opportunities.
He got two punts to really feel to return. You know,
I felt like the first one he might have had
it had a better chance to score on. We just
didn't quite get to the to the return. The second
one he did, and so you only had two shots
and one of them and one of them, you know,
he was able to score on. So I don't know,

(01:28:11):
maybe we'll only get one this week, and so we
got to execute at a high level to try to
make it happen.

Speaker 1 (01:28:16):
Sark then was asked for an update with regard on
Arch banding. Now we already had the thing earlier about
him being in the protocol and all that sort of stuff.
He was asked about what did he think upon further
review looking at the video and the hit on Arch
from behind and the other thing, and did he send

(01:28:37):
that play in to league officials as coaches sent in
plays every week.

Speaker 4 (01:28:43):
Yeah, we've turned in a few plays and that's that's
not uncommon, and we're always trying to find just to
make sure that we're we're understanding of the rules.

Speaker 2 (01:28:52):
You know.

Speaker 4 (01:28:52):
The last thing I want to do on game day
is be complaining to the officials the whole time. And
so I just want to make sure that I know
how we're officiating certain plays so that I can complain
when it's appropriate, you know, And that's not a coaches
do that.

Speaker 5 (01:29:11):
We do it all the time.

Speaker 4 (01:29:12):
But again, I don't want to waste time complaining. And
so a lot of the plays we send in is
not to say see I told you so, is to
get back. No, this is why it wasn't called, or yes,
it probably should have been called, and so I haven't
gotten a ruling back on that yet, but that's why
we do it, and just so that the next week,
when I meet with the officials before the game, I

(01:29:32):
can have that discussion on certain issues that has arised
not only in our games, but in other games, maybe
it's the opponent that we're getting ready to play or
other games around the league, just so that there's a
level of consistency in the officiating and then I know
how much time to spend complaining in game.

Speaker 1 (01:29:49):
And finally, Sark was asked about the rotation at left guard.
Now Nick Brooks had been playing there, it became a
rotation there with Connor Strow healthy again able to go
again and netto Amozulu and they Kibble also were kind
of have been fighting for playing time at that So
he was asked, are those two guys still pushing for

(01:30:10):
playing time and how does he see his left guard
rotation right now?

Speaker 4 (01:30:14):
So Connor was out, you know, obviously he was injured
before the plan was to play him some We went
into the game and you know, it was kind of
odd we were planning on rotating them, and then DJ
got nicked up and so Connor had to go in there,
and then then Connor went over to left guard, and
I just felt like Connor was playing better. We kind
of was like one of those go with the hot hand.

(01:30:36):
I thought that kind of worked out for us there
at the.

Speaker 5 (01:30:39):
End of the day.

Speaker 4 (01:30:39):
Those are the three guards, and those are the two
at left guard, and Nato and Nate and the other
guys are all working and if their numbers called that
you got to be ready to go.

Speaker 1 (01:30:46):
All right there. It is Long Wrn's head coach, Steve Sarkasan.
Tomorrow obviously is when we hear from Long Warren. Players
will do that as well. Op next. We did it
all last week the cow bell kind and I'm glad
we did it with all the cowbells that were ringing.

Speaker 3 (01:31:01):
My head was still ringing on that for Sunday.

Speaker 1 (01:31:03):
But we have the winner in our cow bell contest
for two tickets for the Vanderbilt game that's up next
when we continue on sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zona.
You know, it's hard for me to even hear this
song anymore without thinking of two things.

Speaker 3 (01:31:24):
One that's in the.

Speaker 1 (01:31:27):
Video the scene from Animal House You're worthlessen week because
he says it elate in the song this is of
course we're not going to take it any more by
Twisted Sister. It was one of the submissions in our
cow bell contest where we asked the question what is
the best song that employs the use of the cow bell?

Speaker 3 (01:31:49):
More cow bell?

Speaker 1 (01:31:50):
And I heard more cowboys cow bell than I needed
to hear on Saturday Night in Starkville, although it got
really quiet really on Nibble at Pump Return and then
in overtime as well, because they got very very nervous
on that, And there's lots of videos that have been
circulating around through social media where people just kind of,
you know, just kind of dropped their spirits and all

(01:32:11):
that kind of stuff when it happened. But anyway, so
we asked that question what is the best use of
cow bell in a song? And we removed Blue Oyster
Cults Don't Fear the Reaper from consideration because it had
gotten so much attention, publicity, promotion, airplay because of the

(01:32:31):
Saturday Night Live skit that had Christopher Walk and is
Bruce Dixison there and and and by the way, they
played a lot of that on the video boards in Starkville.

Speaker 5 (01:32:43):
That's I got a fever And.

Speaker 3 (01:32:45):
The only prescription was that that deal and and all that.

Speaker 1 (01:32:48):
They played all of that stuff and the crowd was
getting all fired up about it and all that, and
so we were looking at and smiling, and I was
thinking about our contest because of stuff like this, I
got a fever and the.

Speaker 5 (01:33:01):
Cow bell. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:33:03):
So so we so we came up with this contest
and we said we're removing that song from the equation,
and on our talkback feature, we asked folks to give
us what they thought was the best use of cow
bell in a song. And having narrowed through all the increase,

(01:33:24):
we came down with us that the one prize we
were given away is a pair of tickets to this
Saturday's game between Texas and Vanderbilt. So, first of all,
the fourth runner up that we got, and it was
a it was a lot of consideration for it. Fifty entries, yes, yeah,
so there was a there was a lot of folks

(01:33:45):
and see hear the cowboll right there at the start,
and so it's in there at first. This is low
Ryder my war and it's good, it's it's all so
it's good in there.

Speaker 2 (01:34:00):
Austin's tie in with Days and Confused.

Speaker 1 (01:34:02):
Yep, yep, absolutely somewhere on social media is buried in him.
Is when my daughter was a senior and the captain
of the star Steppers of this stridge when they had
the Dad's Dance.

Speaker 3 (01:34:16):
This was part of it when I had to go
out on stage. And we've got part of it.

Speaker 2 (01:34:20):
We've got to find that in the craig Way shows.

Speaker 3 (01:34:22):
It's out there somewhere, all right.

Speaker 1 (01:34:23):
So that's the fourth runner up, so or I guess
you could say that would be the third runner up.
That's the loser, the third runner up. Now we go
to the second runner up. And this was one that
came in I believe on Friday when I was.

Speaker 3 (01:34:42):
Out of town. I think somebody called this one in
to you.

Speaker 2 (01:34:46):
Yeah, one of our our last second please we put out.
This was either before or after we touch base with
you from DFW.

Speaker 1 (01:34:52):
Lots of cow bell here the Great Three Dog Nights
with black and white.

Speaker 3 (01:35:00):
