Speaker 1 (00:00):
We are with you up until five o'clock this afternoon,
and glad to have you.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
But it's glad to be back at us.
Speaker 1 (00:07):
Five days out of town for me, you know, other
in the vacation, that's a bit even for me, unless
it's like for a bowl game or something like that.
But both of us had travel schedules during the course
of the week mine, Cam and I both went up
with a men's basketball team on Tuesday of.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
Last week to Raleigh, North Carolina.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
The men played on Wednesday against NC State in the
sec ACC Challenge at the Lenovo Center, and Cam and I,
both being from that state, were able to visit a
couple of haunts. Cam with his bo Jangles and cook out.
You did cook out to it. I did cook out.
The second day. I had to have a port barbecue sandwich.
(00:51):
We did that and then Cam flew back with the team.
And I think Rodney said it to me yesterday and pregame,
you guys get back at four o'clock in the morning.
Speaker 2 (00:59):
I think it was. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:00):
I think I got inside my house at five am.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
Yeah, long long trip turnaround, so there was that. Cam
got in the plane landed about the time I was
getting up to leave Raleigh for South ben I had
three days, three times in a four day span where
I had a three am wake up call to get
(01:24):
out by four at the latest. In the case of
leaving South Bend on Friday morning, I actually left for
the airport about three forty in the morning. But anyway,
flipped South Bend, did the game, snow everywhere and all
other kind of stuff.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
It was messy.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
I wasn't quite ready for snow, it wasn't dressed for
didn't have the winter clothing. Tight, hard fought game, Texas losing,
Texas Women losing in overtime to Notre Dame and the
Women's SEC A SC Challenge. They lost eighty seventy in overtime.
And then, like I said, at a six am flight
on Friday morning into Atlanta, and there were various and
(01:56):
sundry issues, mainly with a hotel and getting checked in
and other things like that.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
But we got all that out of the way, and.
Speaker 1 (02:04):
Then Saturday it was the SEC Championship game, as we know,
and going over time in Texas Falls. We got back
to the hotel Saturday night to fly back Sunday morning. Meanwhile,
Cameron was traveling with the women on Saturday. Now, did
you have a do you have issues on the outbound
or just on the return with the women from Harrisonburg,
(02:24):
Virginia because of yesterday afternoon's game with James Madison.
Speaker 3 (02:27):
Just on their return.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
Okay, everything went smoothly on the way up.
Speaker 4 (02:31):
On the way up as fine. You know, there's some
you know, it's reigning here in Austin. We went up
and got in. Now, we did have one of our
tires blow out on the charter bus in Harrisonburg yesterday
on the way the morning shoot around, and thankfully James
Manson University helped us out and got us to the universe,
to the arena and back and forth and outbound there
was a ground stoppage, of course, and we were delayed
(02:54):
about thirty minutes, forty minutes.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
You know.
Speaker 4 (02:56):
I think we got back in about ten pm last night.
So okay, all right, but that's than three Aye, yes
it is, yes, it is. And then the women looke good.
Yesterday I blew out James Madison. They did Maddy Booker
twenty one points, Roy Harmon nineteen now over one thousand
career points. In Jordan lay with twenty points. I think
her it was her career high just a freshman, but
(03:17):
also knocked down six three pointers in her career high
at that point for three pointers made in the game
was just two against Lamar, So she had a coming
out party. And you know, the freshmen did not play
too much against Underdaine. I think, you know, Fix Shaeffer
kind of said, I got to get the freshman more
minutes and that included Breonna Preston and Jordan Lee and
Justice Carleton and Jordan Lee had a fantastic game. And
(03:38):
you know Maddy Booker, I think she had seventeen points
in the first half and James Madison just could not
defend the guard played from Texas. So a good bounce
back victory after that tough overtime loss. The number ten
Notre Dame.
Speaker 1 (03:49):
Next action for the women comes Wednesday night at home
against Southern It's their first home game since.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
That's been a bit.
Speaker 4 (03:57):
I think it's been a month, that's what coach said.
Carter was telling us, Yeah that it's been it's been
about a month. Because that's a game on November thirteenth.
They've been gone for five straight games. It looks like
they're their last home game. Let's see, because they Thanksgiving
week they were gone. So Charlton stated, oh the kids
game Kids not exactly a month, yeah, but close to
(04:19):
that was the twentieth they play on with the fifteenth, eleventh, eleventh,
so about three four weeks.
Speaker 3 (04:27):
Yeah, but they've been living out of a suitcase pretty much.
Speaker 1 (04:29):
Yeah. Yeah, yeah, I know that feeling. I'm tired of
packing and unpacking that heavy fold over rolling garment bag
that I was having a toted around of Raleigh, in
South Bend, in Atlanta, and then back home. I did
a quick change in the manor garage yesterday.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
Of close.
Speaker 3 (04:51):
That's nice, that was fun. Yeah, you didn't want to
do it inside the Moody.
Speaker 1 (04:55):
I didn't want to drag that bag in there, so
I just I just kind of between a couple of
parts cars, you know, threw on a shirt and yeah, yeah,
changed my pants too, changed trousers, pulled out the jeans.
But I was pretty well tucked away. You would have
had to have been looking for me to see me
standing in my box for short. Yeah, yesterday, it was
just it was a real quick thing. It was in
(05:15):
the shadow of my door and everything, and just put
it once we've all been there, we had to do
a quick change and all that. So there was all
of that, So all of the things that happened. There
Now one other personal note just to because I've already
been asked about it many times already, like Facebook, Messenger
and then some Facebook things and even a couple of
(05:37):
emails and some text people wanting to know how the
Texas Clemson playoff game effects my availability for the UIL
High School State football Championship telecast that I work annually.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
Well, it definitely affects it. Obviously.
Speaker 1 (05:51):
The Texas Clemson game is on Saturday, December twenty. First,
that's the same day as State Championship Saturday the l
in At and T Stadium. But as we also know,
it's state championship week, it's not just about the three
games are on Saturday, because there's nine other games that happened.
(06:13):
So I will be up there and I will be
calling games. I just won't be there Saturday. And he said,
we'll wait a minute, and then when the two six
A games are yes, and it will be the first
time that I will not have called a six A
state championship game for television in fourteen years. The last
time I didn't call a six A game was twenty
ten because there was a Texas Michigan State men's basketball
(06:38):
gave a huge Top ten matchup with who'ser man from
Michigan State for Golden State Public Enemy number one. Draymond
Green was playing for Michigan State that day and Texas
dominated him, dominated him.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
That game and long Orench won that game.
Speaker 1 (06:56):
But I had to do that game, so I missed
the six a's that that's the last time I missed
calling the six A state championship games. But I am
calling half of the games. I will be there next week.
I'm calling both six man state championship games. And they've
already determined the finalists for those. By the way, those uh,
(07:18):
those six man state championship game, they've already they've already
determined the finalists for those, and and I was trying
to pull that up here so I can tell you
there's only there's really there's only one returning state champion
in the in.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
The six man classification.
Speaker 1 (07:38):
That's Gordon, the Gordon Longhorns in one A Division one,
and they're going to be facing white Face, Wow, white Face,
the Anelopes from the Panhandle, and then the and then
the Division two bracket Jaydon is favored substantially over Oakwood.
Oakwood is a huge surprise. They haven't been playing six
(08:00):
man that long. They used to be an eleven man program.
In fact, the last time Oakwood was in a state
championship game, I called it on radios a one to
A back then what would now be two A state
championship game against Memphis from the Panana back in nineteen
ninety one. Folks around here high school football fans may
remember Matt Montzingo. He was the coach for several years
at Connolly, then he went down to Canyon Lake. He
(08:21):
was the coach of that Memphis team and they won
the state title. They beat Oakwood. But anyway, I'm doing
both of those six man games, and then that night
calling the two A Division two game, which will match
the winners of this week's semi finals Groover against Munster
and Brimond against Shiner. So I'm doing those two games
Thursday Thursday night. I'm gonna do the three A Division
one state championship game Wednesday night, Thursday night, three Division
(08:44):
one state championship and it should be a doozy. I
think it's probably gonna be Malakoff and Columbus the number
one and number two teams in the state, but Malakoff
has to be Paradise and Columbus has to knock off Edna,
So we'll see. That's Thursday and then Friday have two
games for A Division one could be the big Cinderella
Canyon West Plains and pulled the shocker last week beating Stephenville.
(09:06):
They're playing Salaion and Slide is number one in the
state and I think they'll win that game. And then
the other game is Kilgore against Lavernia, who had knocked
off LBJ in the playoffs and they're still playing, but
I think it'll be Sliona and Kilgore in the four
A Division one. Then I'm doing the five A Division
two Friday night, the winner of Argyle and Dallas South Oakcliff.
They play this week Sock, trying to make it to
its fourth consecutive state title game.
Speaker 2 (09:27):
They won two in a row and then lost to
Fort and Aachis Guards.
Speaker 1 (09:30):
They got the revenge last week they obliterated PNG in
the quarterfinals. So our Guyle plays Sock. The winner that
gets winner of Richmond, Randall and Bernie for the five
A Division two. So I'll be doing those games six
of I I will not have any of the six a's.
I am doing six A game this Saturday afternoon on
(09:51):
FanDuel Sports Southwest, the Old Valley Sports Southwest Westlake against
Galena Park Northshore. So for those of you who'd gotten
used to watching Westlake in the playoffs playing on KBVO,
they won't be on kbv O. The quote unquote the
network picked it up. So Greg Tepper will join me
(10:12):
for the call of that game. We're going to call
that game Westlake against Galena Park in Northshore Saturday afternoon,
two o'clock. They're playing at Legacy Stadium in Katie and
that is on fan Duel Sports Southwest where you would
watch the Spurs, the Old Valley Sports Southwest. So that
is Saturday afternoons game and then we'll do a scoreboard
(10:33):
Saturday night. So I'm back in the studio for that.
So anyway, that's to let people know that's my situation. Meanwhile,
we best we wish the best of luck to both
Westlake against north Shore and also to Vandergriff who is
playing Saturday night.
Speaker 2 (10:50):
It will be the final game of the weekend.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
On semifinal weekend, they're playing Summer Creek, which got to
the state finals a year ago before losing to De Sota.
By the way, if you didn't notice, Thesoda got knocked
out of the weekend. Two times defending state champions were
beaten by Longview. Longview will play South Lake Carol in
the other sixth A Division two state summifinal, and inn
six A Division one, it's North Crowley against Duncanville, the
two time defending state title is the winner that get
(11:13):
the winner of that Westlake North Shore game. Also best
of luck as well to Wimberley as the Texans and
the four A Division two bracket, we'll play La Vega
and if you're looking for a game to go to
Friday night in Georgetown, in Georgetown Wimberley and Leavega. The
winner of that to get the winter game between Brock
and Carthage, the number one team in the state. All right,
(11:34):
so there's an overview of the high school. But tomorrow
we'll get into more detailed. Greg Tepper, managing editor of
Dave Campbell Texas Football Magazine, will join us, so we'll
do that, all right. Coming up next we to hear
from Dabo Sweeney, head coach of the Clemson Tigers. We're
gonna hear some more from Sark throughout the shore this
afternoon and the four o'clock hour. Gene Watson for our
MLB Insider from the Chicago White Sox front office joins
(11:56):
us from the Baseball Winter Meeting still to come here
on Sports Medio AM three, ching under the song
