Speaker 1 (00:14):
He's a Texas lection, a Hall of Fame broadcaster, the
voice of the Texas Longhorns, and your host of the
Craigway Show. Here he is now Craigway.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Okay, so it's forty three minutes after we normally take care.
What's the big deal? Right, good afternoon. I appreciate your indulgence.
This as a nationwide outage, not of electricity or power,
but of some fiber optics things and some things that
(01:11):
were attributed to that big company that starts with a G,
big oldle.
Speaker 3 (01:19):
Apparently it was an issue.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
There was a lot of stuff down on that, including
the system that feeds into our system here at the
little old iHeartRadio compound. So we're glad to be back,
Glad it's all worked out. Happy to be on the
air with you. My name is Craig Way. Thanks very
much for joining us this afternoon. Yeah, I missed you
for forty three minutes there, but we are here with
you the rest of the way, and we're with you
(01:42):
up until five o'clock this afternoon. And so we've got
some things to do. And now we're going to rework
the schedule a little bit because and I promoted this
I've talked about this over the past couple of days
that we were going to visit with Mike White Texas
Softball National Championship when he coached.
Speaker 3 (02:00):
I'm visited with coach White while this outage.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
Was going on, and we said we will reset for
next week.
Speaker 3 (02:08):
So we will.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
We'll do that, We'll look forward to the next week and
we'll visit next week on the air. Also, we were
due to get a College World Series preview with ty Harrington,
who visits with us each week during the college baseball season,
So Tye.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
Will visit with us.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
I think we'll be able to work out a slot
to be able to visit with the coach and have
him on tomorrow. Also tomorrow on the program, I can say,
and again this is assuming we have no more Google
outages or whatever, that Geene Watson will join us to
talk Major League Baseball. That I'll have it in the
four o'clock hour and in the three o'clock hour tomorrow.
(02:51):
We do the Music Survey round two of it this week,
and this week's participant in the music survey is none
other than Roger Wallace, Sports director k x A n
NBC Austin here in town and of course my broadcast
partner long on football and and also on baseball and
fills in for me on some women's basketball and the
(03:13):
occasional men's game. So Roger will be with us tomorrow
and studio to take the music survey, and I will
tell you this too. We've actually added one more question,
one more category in the music survey makes it an
even dozen. So it's been eleven questions since we originally
got the questions in the list from my friends George
(03:36):
Dunovan Craig Miller at the Ticket that did it several
years ago. And when the last time we did it
was three years ago and it went over very very well,
a lot of folks really really liked it. We had
Cameron to it last week, so we're gonna we'll bring
it back tomorrow Roger Wallison do it. And we've actually
added one question kind of fits in with toward the
(03:56):
end of the survey, So that'll be tomorrow on the program.
So what do we have this afternoon on the program
with with what with the time we have left and
we have better than two hours, so we still have
still have some topics to get into. One is going
to be talking some college football, in two or three
different areas and categories. As it relates to the University
(04:20):
of Texas, as it relates to the national scene. There's
several things if you haven't seen it, and it would
make sense if you haven't seen the actual physical magazine itself.
But Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine always comes out late
June early July.
Speaker 3 (04:41):
That'll be the case again.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
They released the cover is They always used to say
cover boy the cover photo, and I think we all
probably could have guessed that the man on the cover
was going to be Steve Sarkisian this year, and it
is sark And we'll get into some more detail about
(05:03):
that coming up. And by the way, before I leave
town on the annual vacation at the end of the month,
Greg Tepper, the managing editor of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine,
will join us as he does he'll do weekly during
the football season, and we'll have him on and yes,
(05:24):
in keeping with what is now over a twenty five
year tradition for me, I think it's a twenty seventh
year we've done it. We will give away copies of
the magazine on the air and through our contesting so
through our talk back feature and things like that. So
we are going to give away copies when we get
the shipment, which will come up I think in early July,
so you have that to look forward to as well.
(05:45):
All Right, so we've got all of those topics to
get to, and we also have to talk about the
NBA Finals. That's definitely important to visit on now that
the Indiana Pacers have taken the two games to one
lead in that there's that there's some other topics to
get to as well. We'll do all of that and more.
We need a break right here, and then we'll be
back to wrap up the truncated first hour of the
(06:07):
program here on thirteen under the Zone. This is nominally
supposed to be the second hour of the program here
on thirteen hunderd the Zone. Obviously, we were unable to
bring you a full first hour of the program. I
think we lost about forty three minutes of programming there
because of a Google oriented outage, is what I was told.
(06:29):
But we're here for the rest of the balance at
lease as far as I'm concerned, and we'll go from there.
Craig Way with you. Glad to have you with us.
Producers Ronald Savage, and again I mentioned tomorrow on the program,
Ty Harrington is going to join us a little College
World Series preview. The first King does begin at two
o'clock tomorrow afternoon Coastal Carolina against Arizona, but he'll join
(06:53):
us early in the two o'clock hour we'll get his
thoughts on the College World Series. Also, in the three
o'clock hour, Roger Wallace joins us to take the music survey,
and in the four o'clock hour Geene Watson from the
Chicago White Sox front office to talk some Major League baseball.
Speaker 3 (07:10):
So that's all coming up tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
Later on here in this hour, a look at the
cover story of Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine. Don't rush
out to the store looking for you. It's not on
the shelf shed, but they did release the cover subject
and it is long Worn's head coach Steve Sarkisian. But
we'll get to some numbers on that and a couple
(07:34):
of other things that are college football related, and some
college basketball notes as they relate to scheduling for the
University of Texas. But we begin with the NBA and
came three in the NBA Finals last night, Indiana rallies
back beat Oklahoma City beat the Thunder in Indianapolis one
sixteen to one oh seven. This it was another Indiana comeback,
(07:59):
but not on the order of what we've seen in
the prior series like against the Knicks and even one
they had against Cleveland where they're way way down and
have to come back, not even as much as they
had in Game one, who they were pretty far back
in that series. They were only down five at the
(08:20):
end of the third and then the Pacers outscored the
Thunder and the fourth quarter thirty two to eighteen. And
the way it was characterized is a lot of unforced
errors on the part of Oklahoma City. Now, that's what
Jaylen Williams said. Thunder head coach Mark Danio said in
(08:41):
the fourth quarter, I just thought they really outplayed us
on both ends. I thought they were in character in
terms of their physicality, the pressure on defense. Then they
were in character in terms of their pace on offense.
All of that's exactly true. I've always kind of, I
don't know if struggled is the right word of this,
but it's always kind of puzzled me. Let me put
(09:03):
it that way. The way that it's viewed through the
prism of the winner and the loser. When things happen,
you know, the winners look at it and say, boy,
we really executed well, we did this, we did that,
blah blah blah, and and they might, if they're being magnanimous,
(09:23):
credit the opponent, say it's a really good opponent.
Speaker 3 (09:26):
That we beat, and so on and so forth. The loser.
Speaker 2 (09:30):
Quite often we'll give some credit to the winning team
as being a good team. They're a really good team,
this and this, But quite often the loser will make
a comment something like Jalen Willinghams did so well.
Speaker 3 (09:45):
We did it to ourselves.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
The unforced errors, we hurt, we were our own worst enemy,
we all that kind of stuff, you know, and all
of that is it may be true, but I think
the answer is probably somewhere in between. I think there's
a sliding scale about how much the losing team did
(10:08):
not help itself. And obviously it's a shot making league
and a shot making game and a shot making series,
so that's some of it, maybe even a good portion
of it, but it's not all of it, because the
winning team also can force the losing team into taking
lower percentage shots forced them into making a hasty decision
(10:33):
that results in what the losing team would call an
unforced error win. In fact, the winning team kind of
got them out of the game just enough to have
them make a pass they don't normally make, which then
is characterized by the losing team as being an unforced
er win. In fact, they were kind of forced into
it through pressure on the ball or how well they
(10:56):
were playing man or even zone in a defense and
forcing an otherwise referred to as unforced error or in
the case of Oklahoma City last night, several of those.
Speaker 3 (11:07):
The other thing.
Speaker 2 (11:09):
That happened in that game was something I thought was
pretty interesting that Rick Carlisle, the head coach of the Pacers,
pointed to and he pointed to his own evolution as
(11:29):
a head coach. And sometimes it comes down to something
as simple as as what he said, get the ball
in Tyresee's hands, talk about Tyrese Haliburton, he said, and
look to make a play, which is obviously happened and
down late in the game, they got to stop. They forced, say,
Shay Gilgers Alexander into a fifteen foot fade away. That's
(11:53):
not a higher percentage shot. I didn't say It was
a low percentage shot, but it's not one of the
higher percentage shots that SGA would take. But that's good defense.
Andrew Demhard was right there with him on his hip.
Speaker 3 (12:08):
Aaron E.
Speaker 2 (12:08):
Smith got the rebound over lou Dord and then he
got the ball to Pascal Siakam.
Speaker 3 (12:16):
He found Obi Toppin, who got the ball to Tyree's.
Speaker 2 (12:18):
Halliburton, and then after Halliburton put up a shot, he
put what proved to be the game winning basket, a
twenty one footer with zero point three. That was in
game one, and in Game two he made a couple
other big shots as well. So the one thing Carlisle
said was it's pretty clear when you have a player
(12:40):
that kind of magnitude, that kind of presence, that kind
of knowledge vision death, you got to let them do
what they do. And what he did was he referred
to his days as the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks.
Remember the Mavericks won the NBA title in twenty eleven,
and the leader of that team on the floor station
kid and he said, what I learned my first year
in Dallas was to give Jay Hid the ball and
(13:00):
get out of the way, let him run the show,
let him run the team. Tyrese very similar situation, but
didn't take half season figure it out. The situation Dallas
with Luca, he said, was the same.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
So maybe some lessons learned by Rick Carlisle as a coach.
There's some of that.
Speaker 2 (13:21):
I think there's also, you know, excellent execution on the
part of the Pacers.
Speaker 3 (13:27):
Uh, there's something to be said for.
Speaker 2 (13:31):
Home court advantage and and what they you know, what
it brings to them.
Speaker 3 (13:37):
So that's why it's going to get to that.
Speaker 2 (13:40):
Always viewed as the always critical Game four coming up
when they have Game four of that. By the way,
speaking of Rick Carlos, speaking of the Dallas Mavericks, Uh,
speaking of Jason Kidd in specific. The Mavericks yesterday were
firmly rejected the New York Knicks request to speak with
(14:04):
Jason Kidd about their head coaching vacancy.
Speaker 3 (14:06):
Of course, he's under contract.
Speaker 2 (14:08):
And Kid's not the only one now that his bosses
have said no to the Knicks, the Rockets, about Aodoka,
Chris Finch, and the Timberwolves.
Speaker 3 (14:20):
Uh, those were all names.
Speaker 2 (14:21):
And Cameron and I were talking about this late last
week before he went out of town and said they're
gonna they're gonna zero in on three names, and Cameron
nailed it, he said, Chris Finchmeodoka, and Jason Kidd. All
three teams said ah to the Knicks. So the Knicks
did ask to speak with Quinn Snyder, head coach of
(14:44):
the Atlanta Hawks, former head coach of the Austin Spurs.
They also were denied. Standerd just finished his third season
in Atlanta, so New York and looking for a new
head coach after firing Tom Thibodeaux now has to look
nowhere else because they've taken four big swings and misses
(15:05):
and have been rebuffed on all of that and then
one other NBA though, because it's getting down to this,
you know, tight situation about whether Kevin Duran is going
to be traded by the Phoenix Suns. Kd and his
(15:30):
business partner from Boardroom CEO, Rich Cleiman have met with
the Sons. They're sifting through the trade scenarios. The teams
that are mentioned most likely interested are the Rockets, the Spurs,
the Heat, Timberwolves, and the aforementioned New York Nicks. So
(15:52):
there's been a lot of speculation that he would be traded.
Ever since the Sun started to engage in trade talks
around the February trade deadline and he wasn't traded, So
they're expecting the talks to escalate before the NBA Draft
happens later this month because the team that if if
(16:17):
this happens, and if a team is successfully able to
make a deal with Phoenix, that clearly alters their draft
plans and their draft projections, just as it would the
teams that don't make a deal to get KD. So
he will be eligible if he is traded to sign
(16:39):
it to year contract extension on July sixth, that is
worth as much as one hundred and twenty two million dollars. Now,
if he were to wait six months after the trade,
he could sign it to your extension worth up to
one hundred and twenty four million. So anyway, a lot
of money for KD to make depending on whether they
make a deal.
Speaker 3 (16:58):
With for him or not.
Speaker 2 (17:00):
All right, up next, have some long warn basketball notes
and Texas football notes to get to when we continue
here on this Thursday afternoon on thirteen under the zone plan.
Have you with us on a Thursday afternoon here on
thirteen under the Zone, We've got a couple of basketball
notes to get to with regard to the University of Texas,
(17:20):
the Southeastern Conference and the Atlantic Coast Conference have an
announced this coming season's ACCSEC Challenge, and that is this
year it's the ACCS turn to be able to put
their name in front of the SEC. Last year the
SEC put it in front of the ACC. So it's
(17:41):
the ACC SEC Challenge. In conjunction with the Four Letter Network.
ESPN announced the matchups and the dates for that, and
all those games are going to be televised across that
ESPN family of networks like ESPN ESPN two, ESPNU ACC
(18:01):
Network SEC Network. Because of television considerations, nine of the
sixteen games and the challenge will be played on Tuesday,
December second. The other seven games will be played on Wednesday,
December third, and then the Women's Challenge happens after that.
So here are the matchups. Quite the headliner. On December second,
(18:29):
defending national champion Florida plays at Duke. Also on December second,
Georgia plays at Florida State. Well, you want to talk
about two blue bloods, North Carolina at Kentucky.
Speaker 3 (18:43):
This is all Tuesday, December.
Speaker 2 (18:45):
Second, Miami at Ole Miss Missouri and Notre Dame, Oklahoma
at wake Forest, Virginia Tech at South Carolina, Tennessee at Syracuse,
and Texas A and M at Pittsburgh Wednesday, December third,
Clemson at Alabama, Louisville at Arkansas, NC State at Auburn,
(19:08):
Mississippi State at Georgia Tech, LSU at Boston College, SMU
at Vanderbilt, and Virginia at Texas. And it will be
the first ever meeting for Texas and Virginia, so that
will be now. They'll announce the times in which network
(19:29):
it is on at a later date. Wednesday, December third, Longhorns,
who were on the road last year they beat NC
State in Raleigh in what was then called the SEC
ACC Challenge. Now it's the ACC SEC Challenge. And Texas
will be at home at Moody Center on Wednesday, December
third to take on the Virginia Cavaliers. Will be the
first time that those two have ever met in basketball.
(19:54):
Right after that, the women's ACC SEC Challenge field for
this year was revealed. Remember last year, After the night
after the Texas men played in Raleigh against Nceas State,
the Texas women played in South Bend, Indiana lost in
(20:17):
overtime to Entertainments, one of only two losses they had
in the entire regular season. This year, the women's basketball
acc SEC Challenge features the Texas Longhorns hosting there at
home since they played on the road North Carolina, and
(20:37):
it's only the second time in program history that Texas
will play North Carolina in women's basketball.
Speaker 3 (20:47):
The only other time they met this is not long ago.
This was.
Speaker 2 (20:51):
January eleventh, nineteen eighty one, and the tari Hills won
that game seventy three. Jody Comrad was the coach of
Texas back then, and this is how long ago. It
was January of eighty one, so that's the eighty eighty
one season. At that time, the NCAA did not recognize
(21:17):
women's athletics, did not recognize women's basketball that was played
in the old AIAW days. And that year Texas, by
the way, was able to get to the national finals
before falling. I believe it was to Rutgers that year.
And so it's been that long since the Texas women
have played North Carolina. But that's what will happen this year.
(21:38):
The Texas women will play North Carolina. So those college
basketball notes we already had the note the other day
that the Longhorns were going to open the season in Charlotte,
North Carolina, playing Duke in that Dick Vital Invitational. But
(21:59):
again quite the national matchup of Duke and Florida playing
the two leagues. The ACC and the SEC split the
first series on both the men's and the women's side.
The SEC swept both last year, so this is the
third year doing it. The SEC clinched the men's title
after winning the first nine games of the challenge, so anyway,
(22:24):
that'll be the case there.
Speaker 3 (22:27):
The most recent top twenty five rankings.
Speaker 2 (22:31):
Have Florida number two, Louisville number seven, Kentucky number nine,
Arkansas number eleven, Duke twelve, Auburn fourteen, NC State twenty four,
North Carolina twenty five. That's the most recent top twenty
five matchups. And of course it's going to be a
matchup of first year head coaches on the men's side
between Texas and Virginia. Ryan Odom the coach of Virginia
to face Shawn Miller Texas. So and that other one
(22:56):
other intriguing matchup, there's Alabama hosting Clemson. Remember they met
in the Elite eight last year. It was well in
twenty twenty four, so I guess it's a little over
a year ago with Alabama beating Clemson to go to
the Final Four. So again, the times and TV designations
yet to be announced, but that's a big thing there
(23:16):
with the acc SC challenge all right on the college
football now and it's become I don't know if it's
a rite of passage or whatever you want to call it.
I don't know if it's necessarily that, but it is
one of those sign posts. This is the time of
year where I start to mention sign posts, meaning drawing
(23:41):
closer to the start of football season. And some of
the most visible ones are going to be like SEC
Media Days next month in July and the Texas High
School Coaches Association's annual Coaching School and Convention that'll be
in San Antonio, and it comes on the heels of
the SEC Media Days at the end of that week.
(24:06):
And there's a couple of other signposts along the way well,
perhaps the earliest, certainly one of the earliest, is the
publication of Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine that is referred
to by many as being the bible of football in
the state of Texas because it has the very thorough
(24:30):
college football previews of all the teams in the college
football teams in the state of Texas, all the way
from say top flight Division one FBS, all the way
down to junior college. There are capsules on all of
those teams that are in there. In the small colleges,
Division two, Division three NAI it's all in there in
(24:51):
the magazine. Also, they have the most comprehensive coverage of
high school football across the state of Texas, talking about
fifteen hundred high schools basically being previewed public and private.
So they do this every year. It's a magazine, as
you know, goes all the way back to nineteen sixty
(25:11):
when Dave Campbell, who was the sports editor the Waycoach
Trip Herald at the time and was for decades, came
up with the idea sitting in his kitchen table. He
drew up the idea for an annual magazine. The first
magazine was ninety six pages in length, total ninety six pages.
Now it's at four hundred and so it's kind of
(25:34):
become a like i say, a tradition, a right of
summer that folks get the summer edition of the magazine,
Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. And then the other big
part of this is the revelation of who is on
the cover. They used to say cover boy because there'd
be usually a football player on it, but they also
(25:55):
had coaches on it as well, so you know, who
would wind up on the cover was always a big,
big story, and for years it was anyway, and I
remember when Mac Brown was on it, and Ricky Williams
was on it, and Cedric Benson was on it, all
of these you know, great long runs, but great players
(26:17):
from around the state of Texas in college football, and
then and then after Cedric Benson in nineteen ninety nine,
I believe it was well maybe by then it would
have been two thousand, was the first high school football
player to be on the cover.
Speaker 3 (26:34):
Because it always been college players or coaches.
Speaker 2 (26:38):
Texas Football Magazine then started going to an inside cover,
a gate fold cover, as they say, it folds out
and you see that and they'll put the college subject
on the outside, the main cover, and then a high
school player and or coach on the inside cover the gatefold.
So they've done that again and this year's cover reveal,
(27:01):
which happened this morning revealed a very pensive, very concentrated
in terms of his visage. Steve Sarkisian. Sark is on
the cover sixty sixth edition of the magazine. Also on
(27:25):
the gatefold cover on the inside is the head coach
at Salina, Bill Elliot, who's team won state championship last year.
Quarterback Bo Bentley and linebacker Luke Biagini also on there
as well. So the Bible of Texas Football, as folks
referred to it, it features Steve Sarkisian. Off of that,
(27:46):
the headline is sark rebuilding Texas his way. He becomes
the sixth log Worns coach on the cover of the magazine.
Darrel Royle the first both in nineteen sixty three and
nineteen seventy four, David McWilliams in nineteen eighty seven, John
mcovic in nineteen ninety six, Mac Brown in ninety eight
(28:08):
and ninety nine, and Tom Hermon was on it in
twenty seventeen. So anyway, sark is on the cover and
on the gatefold cover on the inside. I think they're
sitting in a cafe in Selina. It's called Solana's Golden
Hour there with head coach Bill Elliott, and then his
(28:28):
quarterback Bo Bentley and his linebacker look biaginie so and
they're going to be tough to beat, obviously. And Greg
Tepper is now, I said, managing editor. He's now the
editor in chief. That was the title that Dave Campbell,
the late Dave Campbell carried himself for decades, passed away
(28:49):
and they have named Tepper the editor in chief. But
Temper says that you know, Dave Campbell will always be
the editor emeritus, the editor in chief, but his title
is editor in chief. And his quote was, there's a
weight wei g h T. There's also a wai t
weight for the magazine to come out and hit the shelves.
(29:11):
But he said there's a weight to every Dave Campbell's
Texas football cover. This year, it felt right to spotlight
the man at the center, the most fascinating story in
the state, Steve Sirkesan is elevated Texas back into the
national spotlight, and with the long Horns entering twenty twenty
five of the sky high expectations, this moment felt historic
(29:32):
and worth capturing. And it's the tenth straight year that
the magazine has the second cover, the gatefold cover, and
like I said, as they say, you think small town,
I got to ask. This is probably going back six
seven years ago. Fox was doing the Big Fox you know,
(29:55):
Fox Network was doing a piece on high school football
in Texas and they were doing it for their Super
Bowl pregame show. And they asked if I would do
a sit down interview with them about Texas high school
(30:16):
football as a broadcaster of it, and so on and
so forth, and I said sure, and so I agreed
and sat down for the interview and I was asked,
you know what, why, why, why is it special?
Speaker 3 (30:32):
What makes it so unique? And my answer at the
time was.
Speaker 2 (30:37):
Go out to any number of small towns across the
state of Texas and you'll see the answer for yourself.
I said, go out to West Texas and you can
go out to a big city like Odessa and watch
Permian or then Midland the league. Now now it's you know,
Midland legacy. I said, but you can go to Brownwood, Texas,
(30:58):
one of the cradles of championship excellence. Uh. And I said,
in the other town I mentioned was Selina, And I said,
if you go to Solina, you'll you'll see some of it. Well,
Solana is kind of featured on this coach Bill Elliott,
quarterback Bo Bentley, and linebacker Luke Bagini grace the secondary
(31:18):
cover of the magazine after winning the program's ninth state championship.
Sure enough, they went to a cafe Lucy's on the
Square that's in downtown Salon. I've been there before, and
they appear under the headline of something in the orange
because they are bright orange and white there. So Pam
Oliver was the one from Fox who sat down to
(31:40):
visit with me about all this, and they went to
these places and they saw how how special it really
is and it is all of that, so that they
will be on the cover Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine
Steve Sarkisian on the main front cover and then on
the gatefold inside cover will be uh Solana coach Bill Elliott,
his quarterback Bo Bentley, and his linebacker Luke Bagini. So
(32:02):
that's the cover revealed today from Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
One more football related notes for Texas coming up. That's
next on thirteen under the Zone. Third and final hour
of the program Here on thirteen under the Zone, Greg
Way alongside the producer, and that's Ronald Savage, glad to
have you with us this afternoon. Apologize for there were
(32:24):
issues during the first hour of the program from apparently
what we were told, it was issues that had to
do with Google and shared drives and all sorts of
things that happened, and it kind of took us out
for the first forty minutes plus of the show. So
(32:45):
happy to move beyond that. We understand there may still

Speaker 3 (32:59):
Pour through this Thursday afternoon.
Speaker 2 (33:02):
Okay, there were a couple of things to get to,
but I want to start off with the US Open
leader board because the first round of the United States
Open is underway at Oakmont, and we have a new
leader because jj Spawn, who shot an opening round of
(33:22):
six four hunderd sixty six, was the clubhouse leader for
a long time. Now, you should know that in a
tournament as large as the US Open, it's going to
take a long time for them to get through the
entire field. The first two days before the field is cut.
I think at the US Open, it's low sixty plus ties,
(33:44):
and so it's going to take a while. And in
fact they're sending half the field off the first te
and half off the tent te, and tomorrow they'll flip
flop that order with those the first t and the
tent t and JJ Spawn was one of the first
ones out and he went off to tenth t first
(34:04):
and shot at four in a round of sixty six
and had to lead for a long time, most recently
by one shot over Thurston Lawrence of South Africa who's
in at three hundred sixty seven. But right now there's
been moving on the boards. First of all, Matthew Pavon
of France is three hundred fours round. He's played ten holes,
(34:27):
starting the back nine first, so he's played ten or eighteen,
and he's played number one. But there is a new
leader right now through eleven holes of his round, and
having started on number ten on the back nine, is
Soon j M of Korea, who is five under par.
Right now now he has seven holes remaining in his round,
(34:50):
but right now, Soon j M is the leader by
one shot over JJ Spawn and by two over Thurston Lawrence.
At Matthew Pavon in the clubhouse at minus two. Seewoo
Kim of South Korea. Also Sam Burns is on the
golf course and minus two. The American through twelve holes
(35:11):
of his round. Rasmus Neerguard Peterson of Switzerland is two
under through eight holes. Ben Griffin, we've seen him, excel
of late shot a one under round of sixty nine.
Thomas Detrie of Germany also shot under a one under
round of sixty nine. And these golfers are still on
the golf course and one under, including back to back
(35:32):
champion Brooks Keepka Colin Morikawa, who is through eleven holes
of his round Keepka thirteen. Patrick Reid is minus one
through eleven and if you heard about his day, you
might wonder why he is not doing better than just
one under. You see, Patrick Reid today made only the
(35:54):
fourth double legal since the US Open started keeping records
four decades ago. So you say, what's a double eagle?
That's a two on a par five and albatross, as
they call it, his second shot two hundred eighty six
yards away on the par four of the par five
(36:17):
fourth hole at Oakmont. The albatross really considered the rarest
shot in golf. And for those who say, well, wait,
what about a hole in one? Hey, only a few
hundred albatross shots the two on a par five are
(36:37):
made every year around the world. A few hundred is
a way that you think of the millions of rounds
of golf, only a few hundred every year. You said,
what about holes in one?
Speaker 3 (36:49):
There are an.
Speaker 2 (36:51):
Estimated excess of thirty thousand holes in one made every
year around the world. So it was a fairway wood
that Patrick Reid hit onto the green. It bounced three
times and rolled toward the hole. He didn't know where
it went in. He raised his palm to the sky
and then pointed downward.
Speaker 3 (37:12):
Did it go in?
Speaker 2 (37:12):
And there was big applause there. He joins tc Chen
who in nineteen eighty five at Oakland Hills, Sean mckeel
who in twenty ten at Pebble Beach, and of course
McKeil won a PGA Nick Watney an Olympic Club in
twenty twelve as the only players to make a two
(37:35):
on a par five and albatross at the US Open.
Since they started keeping records of that in nineteen eighty three,
we know that Gene Sarazen did it in the Masters,
I believe nineteen thirty five. And it's interesting bring up
TC Chen. It was forty years ago. TC Chen at
Oakland Hills in Michigan. Yeah, he had a double eagle,
(37:59):
but he he got kind of hung up on the
doubles because that's the guy, and that's the tournament. The
eighty five US Open, who hit it twice coming out
of a bunker, hit it twice.
Speaker 3 (38:12):
He hit it with.
Speaker 2 (38:15):
The face of the iron, then it caught a shaft
on the way up. And I always remember Peter Alice,
the great broadcaster from the BBC, was working on ABC's
that Oh my wood. He's hit it twice and he did,
so that was an unusual open f him. But anyway,
Patrick Reid makes double legal today and yet for all
of that, he is only minus one for the tournament,
(38:40):
so he's had some issues otherwise. Read here's how his
card reads.
Speaker 3 (38:46):
You love this.
Speaker 2 (38:49):
Pard the first hall, part four, and he played the
front nine first the traditional eighteen hole rotation, starting with
number one, made a par on the par four first hole,
made a bogie five on the par four second hole,
made a four, a par on the third hole. Then
(39:13):
on that six hundred and twenty one yard par five
fourth hole, which tells me if he knocked it in
from two eighty six, so that means that was what
three hundred and about thirty five yards with a fairway wood.
Then he knocked in but did got the two on
(39:34):
the par five fourth hole, so it took him from
one over to two under. Then gave back a shot
with a bogie on the very next hole, a par
four fifth, then came back with a birdie on the
par three sixth, got a par at the par four seventh,
a par at the par three eighth, and a bogey
at the par four ninth, and then back to back
(39:55):
bars at ten and eleven. So he's had a roller
coaster ride, you might say. But he is minus one
for his round, still playing right now as he's playing
on the twelfth hole, and those are the ones at under.
Also at one under Cameron Young, who's playing the back
nine first through eleven holes of his rounds one under,
Daniel Berger one under through ten holes.
Speaker 3 (40:17):
Of his round.
Speaker 2 (40:18):
Justin Hastings, an amateur, one under through eight holes of
his round. Other names to note Adam Scott even par
seventy today. Jordan Spieth is even through twelve holes of
his round playing the back nine first. Today John Rahm,
former champion, even through twelve holes of his round, and
(40:40):
in fact those two are playing together right now. Victor
Hovelin even through eleven holes of his round playing the
front nine first. And let's see any other. Brian Harmon
is plus one and looking to see Scotty Scheffler one
over through eleven. So Scotty's off to you know, so
(41:02):
so start right now. Johnathan Vegas also plus one and
that's through ten holes of his round. So anyway, there's
your US Open leaderboard update.
Speaker 3 (41:11):
We'll updated again.
Speaker 2 (41:12):
Before we're done with the program. Up next college football
notes to get to some extensive and I do mean
extensive rankings. That's next here on thirteen under the zone.
Speaker 3 (41:23):
Hey, before I move.
Speaker 2 (41:24):
On to the football notes, I did want there were
a couple other scores I needed to give you from
the US Open because these are players of interest. At
plus three is the defending champion, Bryce into Shambo, also
shooting a three over a round seventy three. Kegan Bradley
and former champion Gary Woodland. All of those golfers are
(41:48):
plus three. They shot seventy three today. The following golfers
are in the clubhouse at plus four seventy four, Tommy Fleetwood,
Matt Siama, Matt Fitzpatrick, former champion, Wyndham Clark, former champion,
Lucas Clover, former champion, Phil Mickelson not a former champion,
(42:13):
and former champion Rory McElroy in the clubhouse at plus four.
Also a Jason Day in the clubhouse at plus four.
Actually he's still on the golf course. He's on the
twelfth hole at for him. But anyway, all of those
golfers shot for over, including Rory McElroy. And there was
yet another story today that came out.
Speaker 3 (42:35):
About his.
Speaker 2 (42:38):
Behavior, as he said, was not normal.
Speaker 3 (42:43):
Now.
Speaker 2 (42:44):
The other day he had a practice round and those
who are keeping score saw that he shot eighty one
in a practice round the other day. But he said
he felt much better going into the day.
Speaker 3 (42:58):
He said.
Speaker 2 (42:58):
His quote was I need to get my stuff together
after having that master's hangover. But he did reveal he
shot eighty one eleven over in his practice round and
Paul McGinley, the former Ryder Cup captain said who was
playing alongside McRory, said he did not think that his
(43:19):
behavior was representative of his usual self he said, I'm
no psychologist, but it looks like the air has been
sucked out of him a little bit since that not
just in the way he's play, but in his press conferences.
It's very unrary like in his press conferences have such
low energy. So and it carried forward, I guess to
(43:39):
the golf tournament today in the first round where McCrory
shot four over seventy four. So again we'll keep an
eye on the leaderboard.
Speaker 3 (43:47):
We'll let you know that. All right, I wanted to
move forward to this. We you know, we have these.
Speaker 2 (43:59):
Ranking sets of rankings that come out every year, and
then of course there are the weekly rankings, the AP
Top twenty five, and then more importantly, certainly those who
are factoring into it, the college football playoff rankings. It
is the considered opinion of many that there shouldn't even
be rankings of any kind AP rankings or anything other
(44:20):
until at the very least when the college football Playoff
rankings come out in late October. And the reason for
that is they feel that it compromises the objectivity of
those who are in the in the room in the
(44:46):
conference room for the College Football Playoff Committee that there
are preconceived notions that go into this and that it
and that the AP poll, the weekly AP poll, starting
with a preseason poll in August, only further compromises the
(45:09):
objectivity of it. That folks get it in their minds that, well,
we have to rank whatever Alabama at number three because
they're number three in the AP Poll. Now, I will
tell you this that those who are doing the ranking
with the College Football Playoff Committee says it has absolutely
(45:32):
nothing to do with that, that they don't pay attention
to it. But I think there has to be some
sort of attention paid to it simply because of the
games that they're going to be watching. Now. To be sure,
you don't have to know where Texas or Ohio State
is going to be ranked when the two get together
(45:52):
in the Horseshoe they're in Columbus on August thirtieth. It
doesn't matter if you think they're one hundred in one
hundred and one or one and two. It doesn't matter
because there's a lot thought in them by the committee
regardless of where the AP.
Speaker 3 (46:09):
Pole puts them.
Speaker 2 (46:11):
Still, in all, we live in a society, especially if
you love the sporting life and you follow what's going
on where we rank things, even things that settle themselves,
like for example, Major League Baseball, it doesn't really matter
where teams are quote unquote ranked, and you say, well,
(46:32):
why would they be ranked? Their standings? Absolutely, But I
think between MLB dot Com, ESPN, the Athletic, there's two
or three other sources that I look at on a
daily basis, and they have their own sets of so
called power rankings where they rank all of the baseball teams.
Speaker 3 (46:54):
From one to thirty.
Speaker 2 (46:56):
And you know who looks the best right now, whether
it's the Tigers or the Dodgers, or the Yankees or whoever,
or the Mets who have been red hot of late,
or the Cubs, and they rank all the way down
to the worst teams, and right now the Colorado Rockies
have the worst team in all of baseball and then some.
(47:16):
But that all takes care of itself because the teams
play the games to decide who gets to the postseason,
and then the postseason handles itself. Now, there may be
disagreements about whether the playoff structure is the best that
it could be, should there be a receding, YadA YadA.
(47:37):
We hear all those arguments every year, But the bottom
line is, if you're good enough, you play your way
through the system and you win anyway. Same thing happens
with the NBA, same thing happens with the NFL, Same
thing happens with the NHL. College football, as we know
it is a playoff committee that puts you together. Now,
if you win your conference and you're a Power four
(48:01):
conference champion, you're going to be in. And chances are
if you're in one of those power conferences, if you're
the runner up, you got a good chance to be
in as well, in the field of twelve, which in
a year or two or whenever may expand either fourteen
or possibly even sixteen teams. But getting to that point
is where things get interesting in terms of the rankings,
(48:25):
and that's where most of the angst and most of
the controversy, and most of the discussion and most of
the outrage, righteous or otherwise rice is to the surface.
There where teams are subjectively ranked if they're not winning
their conference outright. This especially holds true for the G
(48:48):
five schools, those Group of five schools. How the conferences
aren't powered, and I'm talking about the Mid American Conference,
the Sun Belt, the American Athletic Conference and then the
the other two conferences, uh that are that are Conference
USA that are not in the Mountain West. Those are
(49:09):
the five that are not of the Power ILK. So
there's this constant jockeying for positioning going on between the
top contenters in that league and whether they deserve to
get more one in there. And we'll find out over time.
We just got through with spring meetings in the SEC
and the ACC and all of the wailing and gnashing
(49:30):
of teeth over what kind of playoff model we the
future may hold us for sip of water and uh
so this so all of this jockeying goes on in
the meantime. It is up to outlets like the Athletic
or College Football News or in this case that I'm
(49:52):
about to go to ESPN to have their own sets
of rankings. Well, ESPN does have that. And what they
did was they evaluated not just a top ten or
a top twelve or a top twenty five. No, they
(50:15):
went with a new what they say Power four version
of their football power ratings all the way from sixty
eight down to one. These are the Power four ones, okay,
And this is how they evaluated these teams returning quarterback,
(50:36):
likelihood of a multi year quarterback on the roster, offensive
line and defensive line outlook, roster management, and star power,
all Americans, National awar contenders, all conference contenders, which by
the way, are subjectively selected, so it's kind of a
vicious cycle in that respect. And the one other factor
(50:57):
as coaching staff. And they point out that not every
one of these areas has to be a strength to
boost eight teams overall rating. Most teams likely cannot rely
on having a multi year starting quarterback on the roster,
given the volatility of the position, but the most promising
teams usually check at least a few of these boxes,
(51:18):
especially overall roster management, high school recruiting and transfers, line
of scrimmage play, and at least some star power. Okay,
so this is a Power four version of their Football
Power rankings, from number sixty eight all the way down
to number sixty one. Now I'll skim through this pretty quickly,
but just to give you an idea of what they're
talking about. Number sixty eight at the bottom of the
(51:41):
Football Power rankings. Whenn't that long ago they used to
be really good. Stanford number sixty eight, sixty seven, Perdue
sixty six, West Virginia sixty five is UCF sixty four
is Arizona, Wake Forest to sixty three, Oklahoma at sixty two.
(52:02):
Number sixty one is Houston. Maryland is number sixty. Now
you get into the top sixty number fifty nine, Mississippi State.
There's the lowest ranked SEC school. Fifty eight is Northwestern
fifty seven, Cincinnati fifty six, Cow fifty five, Arkansas fifty four,
(52:25):
Wisconsin fifty three, Virginia Kentucky at number fifty two, So
that makes three SEC schools. Now fifty one is Michigan
State fifty Kansas now Inside of the top fifty, UCLA
is forty nine. Then it's Vanderbilt at forty eight, Boston
College at forty seven, Virginia Tech at forty six, Pittsburgh
(52:49):
forty five. Lot of ACC schools all of a sudden
rattle off the list North Carolina number forty four. There's
another one, Rutger's at forty three, NC State at forty two,
Syracuse at forty one, and number forty is Minnesota. Inside
of the top forty Florida State is thirty nine, TCU
(53:09):
at thirty eight. Auburn there's another SEC at thirty seven,
Nebraska at thirty six, Colorado at thirty five, Duke at
number thirty four, Washington thirty third, Baylor number thirty two,
Georgia Tech number thirty one, and number thirty is Utah
inside the top thirty Texas Tech at number twenty nine,
(53:32):
Texas A and M at twenty eight. What they say
about the Aggies returning quarterback, Yes, Marcel Reid back for
a second season, And they go on some stuff like that
likelihood of a multi year quarterback very likely in the
case of Marcel Reid. And then they do an offensive
and defensive line outlook, a roster management in the Star
Power and Coaching Staff number twenty seven Oklahoma.
Speaker 3 (53:56):
Feature.
Speaker 2 (53:56):
Their previous future ranking was sixteen. Took a big hit
because of players who transferred out. Number twenty six usc
as in Southern California. Number twenty five is BYU, number
twenty four Louisville twenty third, Iowa number twenty two Missouri,
(54:16):
number twenty one is Kansas State and number twenty is Indiana.
And again these are Football Power rankings that we're put
together by ESPN. Now into the top twenty Iowa State
is nineteen. South Carolina number eighteen. Illinois is seventeen, Ole
miss at sixteen, Florida at fifteen, SMU is fourteen, Michigan
(54:45):
number thirteen, Arizona State is twelve, number eleven, Miami at
number ten getting into the top ten. Alabama number ten,
fell six spots from four to ten in the previous
power rank Future power ranking. Number nine is Tennessee number eight,
(55:12):
LSU getting into a lot of sec now number seven,
Clemson back to the ACC number six, Penn State so
there to the big ten. Number five. Notre Dame is
an independent now into the top five. Oregon is number four,
Georgia is number three. Ohio State is number two. So
(55:38):
that tells you who's number one and their power rankings.
And I didn't know this until I scroll thro all this.
I wanted to save it and reveal it to myself
even as they reveal it to you. Their number one
team in their future power ranking are the Texas Longhorns
went from number three to number one. Here's what they
say about the Longhorns returning quarterback No. When yours was
(56:01):
texas primary starter the past three seasons. Became a seventh
round draft pick by the Mammon offense likelyhood of a
multi year quarterback. Their comment wouldn't rule it out. That's
what they say. Arch Manning finally becomes quarterback QB one
for the Longhorns, and he could position himself as a
top NFL draft selection twenty twenty six. But Manning is
(56:23):
in a unique situation because of his background and the
money he has already earned in college. He doesn't need
to rush off to begin his pro career and could
benefit from a second season as the starter under coach
Steve Sarkisian offensive line defensive line outlook. Sarkishan got the
Texas job largely because of his reputation with play calling
and quarterbacks, but his greatest gains have come up front,
(56:46):
especially elevating an underperforming offensive line. The challenge will be
replacing six linemen three offense, three defense selected in the
NFL draft. Senior guard d J. Campbell is the only
offensive line start up returning in Texas, will need tackle
Trevor Gooseby and others to step up. There are a
few more certainties on the defensive front, with Colin Simmons
(57:08):
and Ethan Burt both back of the interior will have
some questions Roster management Sirkeishan has backed up the recruiting expectations,
signing ESPN's top raighted twenty twenty five class. After bringing
in the number five class in twenty twenty four, Texas
was selective in the portal and made quite possibly its
biggest splash in the spring with tight end Jack Endries
(57:29):
from cal The defensive tackle spot has been hit hard
by the past two NFL drafts, and Texas supplemented with
transfers Colbervard of Purdue, Travis Shore a Shaw excuse me
in North Carolina, and Hero Canoe of Ohio State. Star
power Manning will be the most watched player in the
sport entering the fall and seemingly as the talent to
(57:51):
become a National Awards contender. Simmons and linebacker Anthony Hill
Junior will be on the radar for top defensive honors,
and safety Michael taff sophomore, wide receiver Ryan Wingo and
others are worth watching. And then, finally, coaching staff, Sarkeisian's
growth is head coach has been on full display the
past few seasons as he's led Texas to college football
(58:13):
appearances and different conferences. He's at an a list job
and likely isn't going anywhere, and he has done a
good job establishing and maintaining a veterans staff that includes
coordinators Kyle Flood on offense, Pete Quick cowskin defense, and
Jeff Banks on special teams. So there they are ESPN's
(58:34):
future Power rankings. And again I, you know, hold my
hand up and say I do solemnly swear I did
not look at this in terms of the rankings all
the way down because I wanted to see it for
myself even as I called it out to you.
Speaker 3 (58:50):
That's how it is with play by play, guys, right, we.
Speaker 2 (58:53):
Want to see the game and be able to call
it to you as we describe it.
Speaker 3 (58:59):
That's how we want to do that thing.
Speaker 2 (59:00):
We don't want to know the answers in advance most
of the time anyway, and I certainly didn't want to
in this case.
Speaker 3 (59:05):
But there it is.
Speaker 2 (59:05):
Those are these future Power rankings, and they say those
are through twenty twenty six, So keep an eye on that.
Speaker 3 (59:13):
All right.
Speaker 2 (59:14):
We've got some other notes to get to and we'll
continue right here on thirteen under the Zone.
Speaker 1 (59:19):
Glad to have you with us.
Speaker 2 (59:21):
On this Thursday afternoon. Again, a reminder tomorrow. We got
a pretty busy day. Cameron Parker will be back tomorrow.
Also tomorrow, in the two o'clock hour, we'll talk college
baseball at College World Series Preview with the one and
(59:42):
only Ty Harrington, our broadcast colleague and former Texas State
head coach. The first game will actually be underway when
Ty takes some but they will have just begun. It
will have just started, So if you're still looking for insight,
you'll get the insight on that can't help you if
you're there for the wagering side of it, because the
(01:00:04):
window will be closed at that point since the first
game will be underway, it will have just started by
like five minutes. When tie Joints is tomorrow, that's in
the two o'clock hour. In the three o'clock hour, Roger
Wallace does the music survey, and we've added a question
(01:00:24):
to the music survey, and it just kind of fits
right in with the tail end of it. So now
there's twelve questions. If we hadn't heard us do this,
it was something we did three years ago when it
was Crosstown at the other place, and we got it
from my friends of the ticket, namely George Dunaman, Craig Miller,
two guys who went to college with and they do
the morning show up there, and they started with that
(01:00:45):
and it was a pretty popular feature, and so we
figured we try it. We did, and a lot of
folks liked it, and three years later we're bringing it back.
We're gonna have some different people take it, like Roger Wallace,
broadcast colleague on Long Warn Game in Sports director ka Exhan.
Roger will be in here in studio in the three
o'clock hour to do the music survey.
Speaker 3 (01:01:07):
So we do that.
Speaker 2 (01:01:08):
It's twelve, Like I said, it's been eleven questions. We're
adding one to it now, so it's'll be twelve total
questions that you have to answer, and it basically boils
down to which band or artist fills the best answer
to that specific question. However, you can only invoke the
(01:01:29):
name of that band or artist one time. So only
one time could you say the Rolling Stones. Only one
time could the answer me the Beatles. And you can't
even use an offshoot answer. You can't say Paul McCartney
in Wings, even though it's a completely different band, that
sort of thing, but Paul McCartney was a bridge between
that one and the other, so you couldn't do that.
(01:01:50):
So that's the music survey, and that'll be Roger Wallis
doing that at three o'clock hour, four o'clock hour tomorrow.
Geene Watson from the shot a White Sox front office
or player personnel director joins us. So we'll hear from
Gino as well, talk about this weekend coming in the
big League.
Speaker 3 (01:02:10):
So plenty to get to.
Speaker 2 (01:02:11):
On tomorrow's show as well. Interesting college basketball note now
I had just got through mentioning the the well I
did last hour, the acc SEC Challenge, the acc SEC
(01:02:33):
Challenge matchups for the coming college basketball season for both
the men and women. For Texas, the Long Worn men
on December third, where I think it's December second will
be hosting Virginia. It'll be the first time that Texas
(01:02:54):
plays Virginia in basketball. And and then in addition to that,
the women the next night will host North Carolina and
it will be only the second time those two programs
have met. The first time was way back in nineteen
eighty one, before the NCAA even sanctioned women's athletics, and
(01:03:17):
so it was a matchup in the old AIAW. I
believe it's the Association for Intercollegiate.
Speaker 3 (01:03:23):
Athletics for Women.
Speaker 2 (01:03:24):
Back then AIAW and Texas was very good back then.
Jody Conrad had him in a national championship that year
before they fell in the championship matchup. But anyway, so
I mentioned I just got through mentioning that, and in
terms of rankings for that, don't you just love it
when at least there's some self disclosure here. But these
(01:03:50):
a lot of these national media outlets have what they
call way too early polls, and I agree, I donned
my head and so yeah, it's too early, but I'm
gonna read them anyway, because you want to see what
they think of them. So like the Athletic had their
way too early top twenty five and in their way
(01:04:14):
too early top twenty five. In case you are interested,
number twenty five is Tennessee, and I'm gonna get to
a Tennessee story in a minute. It's gonna be really interesting.
Their number twenty five. Ohio State is twenty four, Arkansas
twenty three, Missouri twenty two, Illinois twenty one, UCLA is twenty,
(01:04:35):
Creighton number nineteen, Kentucky eighteen, Saint John's seventeen, North Carolina sixteen,
Kansas fifteen, Iowa State fourteen, Alabama's thirteen, Texas Tech number twelve,
Arizona eleventh, Duke number ten, Yukon nine, Auburn eight, Michigan
(01:04:58):
State seven, BYU six, Michigan five, Louisville four, Houston number three,
Florida number two, the defending national champion in preseason number
one is due. Yes, Texas was not ranked in that
too early top twenty five, however, and I mentioned Tennessee
(01:05:21):
was number twenty five. Interesting story that came down today,
and it came down just a little while ago. If
you're familiar with Tennessee's basketball program, you know about Zechai Ziegler,
or outstanding point guard who had been injured at various
(01:05:43):
times throughout his career, and he was seeking a fifth
year of eligibility, so he had asked for that, but
it was denied. Today a US District Court Judge, Catherine
Critcher denied ied Ziegler a preliminary injunction that would have
granted him another season, writing that Ziegler and his lawyers
(01:06:06):
failed to present sufficient evidence that the rule of four
seasons of eligibility produces substantial anti competitive effects in the market.
This isn't about just wanting to get a season back
because of injury. This is to their point. They think
that it produces substantial anti competitive effects in the market.
(01:06:30):
So for the moment, his career as one of the
best players in Tennessee history is over and a possible
flood of four year player seeking a fifth year of
eligibility is potentially avoided. Now this comes on the heels
of another athlete in the state of Tennessee, but at
(01:06:53):
a different institution, was granted extra eligibility. And I'm speaking
of Diego Pavia, the Vanderbilt quarterback whose claim was that
junior college time should not count toward your collegiate eligibility.
There were many who disagreed, including in that group Longgorn,
said coach Steve Sarkeesian, himself a former junior college quarterback,
(01:07:19):
and start believed that it did come. But anyway, that's
where it is college athletics are turning.
Speaker 3 (01:07:24):
Midt.
Speaker 2 (01:07:25):
Winter told The Athletic that when the law suit against
the NCAA was filed, he thought Ziegler had a fifty
to fifty chance of winning it, but in response to
today's ruling, Winter said this should dissuade athletes in Ziegler
situation from suing, but he added he doesn't think the
ruling is all that great for the NCAAA, as some
(01:07:45):
may conclude. His quote was, the court did hold that
NCAA eligibility rules, like the four seasons of competition rule,
are commercial and subject to antitrust law. The NCAA argued
the rule isn't commercial and not subject therefore to anti
trust law at all. Some judges have agreed, some have it.
So this is another court decision holding NCAA eligibility rules
(01:08:09):
are subject to anti trust law. As a result, attacks
on those rules will likely still continue. I started to saying,
I don't see this as being the end of it.
Ziegler's representation, which is the Litzen PLLC in the Garza
Law firm, said when the suit was filed last month
that quote the NCAA's rule permitting only four seasons of
(01:08:30):
competition within the five year eligibility window is an unlawful
restraint of trade under federal and state anted trust laws.
The lawsuit claimed that this fifth year of eligibility is
the most lucrative for the vast majority of athletes, and
I agree with them on that and that Ziegler would
suffer irreparable harm without an immediate injunction allowing him to
(01:08:53):
compete in the twenty twenty five to twenty twenty six season.
His lawyers claimed he could have earned up to four
million dollars in a fifth season in the college basketball
after making five hundred thousand dollars in his four season.
We are, of course, speaking of nil right now. He
intended to pursue a graduate degree after graduating in May
with a degree in retail and merchandising management, and the
(01:09:14):
lawsuit pointed out that Ziegler's class is the first in
the era of NIL and for athletes who have not
been granted an extra year. So the classes had entered
school between twenty sixteen and twenty twenty received that extra
year because of the pandemic. It'll be interesting to see
how this thing steps forward. I have a feeling the
(01:09:35):
last of the rulings on this has not yet come down,
but for the moment, the guy Ziegler was denied a
fifth year of eligibility. Thank you very much for joining us.
