Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's on the Thursday, and we're getting closer and closer
to the weekend. Get afternoon, everybody. Welcome to the program
here on sports Radio a IM thirteen under the Zone.
My name is Craig Way. Thank you for joining us.
We're with you each and every afternoon weekday afternoon Monday
through Friday from two to five pm. So if you're
closing in on the weekend, good for you. I hope
(00:23):
you're able to get there, get to the finish line
on it. And for those of you have to work
the weekend, some of us have to work during the weekend.
I hope it still goes well. Our producer Jay Carmon
also has to work during the weekend. Have you acclimated
to this ramped up work schedule for you since you
(00:43):
moved down from our nation's capital.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
We're getting there.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
Tell me ask me this question on Monday, okay, because
I've got exciting stuff happening all weekend long.
Speaker 4 (00:51):
Yeah, yeah, absolutely, Okay, we'll do that.
Speaker 1 (00:55):
We've got some exciting stuff happening on the program this
after coming up in a few minutes, we'll hear from
Long Horns head coach Steve Sarkisian sark does that weekly
Thursday Zoom media availability. It is his final media availability
of the week and we'll hear his thoughts, injury updates
as well, things of that nature, so we'll we'll have
(01:17):
that for him. We of course will have inconceivable this hour,
and there's some inconceivable things to get to, so we'll
do that. In the three o'clock count. We have a
guest with us. I talked a little bit about this
yesterday but bears repeating. Babel Offenburg, who is the radio
(01:41):
analyst for the Dallas Cowboys radio network works with Bradsham
on the Cowboys broadcast, will join us. Yeah, we'll talk
a little bit of Cowboys, but he also has a
rather unique connection to the opponent for the Texas Longhorns
this weekend, the UTEP Minor, and it's a really interesting
(02:03):
story and it deals with some sadness as well. You
may have known that he had a son, Luke, who
played had transferred into UTEP and was a receiver there
before he was stricken with cancer and ended up passing
away in twenty nineteen.
Speaker 4 (02:19):
But there's.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
A really cool story to come out of this as well,
and it has a local angle also, so we'll get
Maabe to discuss that, as well as talk some cowboys
in the three o'clock hour. In the four o'clock hour,
Roger Wallace, my broadcast partner Longhorn football and sports director
in his day job at k x AN, we'll join us.
(02:43):
We get a preview of his KBVO high school game
of the week tonight, which also has a connection to
the Babe Lothenburg story and Saturday's game with UTEP.
Speaker 4 (02:58):
It's funny how some things I just wind up connecting.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
But we'll visit with Roger and talk about those things
as well. So that'll be in the four o'clock hour.
And as always, we enjoy taking your questions, your thoughts,
your comments, and especially on this day. And I'm going
to get to my own recollection of this day twenty
four years ago here in a few minutes. But if
(03:22):
you like to join in with that, feel free to
do so. You can access us via the text line.
What you'll do is you'll text the word Texas follow
by your question or comment to eight one five three zero.
So you text the word Texas follow by your question
or comment to eight one five three zero. Standard messaging
(03:43):
and data rates may apply, Okay, I wanted to go
ahead and do this now and then we'll proceed more
with the program and things like that. But I have
always felt, ever since the nine eleven tragedy in two
thousand and one, that it is worth commemorating every year,
(04:06):
and it is. It's commemorated across our nation every year.
Simp of water here, and it is one of those
events where you remember, if you're old enough to remember
where you were and what you were doing at the
(04:28):
time that had happened. And I know this goes back
to things like folks have also connected one of these
you know where you were and what you were doing
when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldron first set foot on
(04:48):
the moon January twentieth, nineteen sixty nine. Many others say
they remember, you know where they were when President Kennedy
was assassinated in nineteen sixty three. The old timers, those
who were still with us, remembered where they were when
the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December seventh, nineteen forty one.
(05:12):
So there's these different touchtone moments in history where a
person who was living and conscious of everything and old
enough could place themselves themselves wherever wherever they were at
that time, and remember exactly where they were at that time.
(05:33):
I was not old enough to know or remember much
about what was going on with the Kennedy assassination. I
was three years old. I do remember some vague images
and stuff. I remember television being on and black and
white and seeing Kronkite and you know, that kind of thing.
(05:54):
But that's I really have no real recollections of that.
The moon landing, I do. I was not quite nine
years old, and I remember when the eagle landed during
the afternoon on a Sunday afternoon. I was at my
(06:14):
aunt and uncle's house and my family gone over and
we were doing some big Sunday dinner from the Italian
side of my family, so there was lots of pasta
and all that kind of stuff. And when we left
their house, and it was about twenty minutes from where
we lived, and this was growing up in North Carolina,
we went back to our home and I remember sitting
(06:36):
like the stereotypical young kid with Aleg's cross sitting there,
you know, sitting cross legged on the floor watching television
on the living room carpet, watching that night. And I
do remember that as well, and those are you know
(06:59):
that the the moon landing thing is a nice touchtone
moment that we're folks from. Obviously, nine to eleven is
a completely different issue and a completely different story. But
this story always comes back to me, and it especially
comes back to me on Thursdays, like it is this year.
(07:22):
And the reason for that is the nine to eleven
trategy happened on a Tuesday, but that week working here
at this radio station. At the time, we were at
seventh and Lamar. We had not yet moved down to
the Penfield location. That happened later that year or early
(07:45):
two thousand and two, but anyway, we had not yet
moved and so we were still at seventh in Lamar,
and we would broadcast a high school football game of
the week on Thursday nights because Fridays we carried Westlake,
and in those days, in the two thousand and one season,
(08:11):
Keith Morland and I did the Westlake broadcasts here on
the zone. That was in like my three year hiatus
with the High School Scoreboard television show. I started doing
that in nineteen ninety six and it went all the
way through last year, but there was three years when
I didn't do it one, two, and O three. The
reason for that is one Bill Schoning had already announced
(08:35):
he was leaving to take the San Antonio Spurs job,
so I was preparing to move into the play by
play role. I was doing Mac Brown's show by then,
the long run weekly, so I didn't want it to
interfere in anything.
Speaker 4 (08:47):
So I stepped away from that show for three seasons.
Speaker 1 (08:49):
I won through three, including my first two years of
doing the Texas play by play, and I got a
phone call from their producer going into Fords, Is there
any way we.
Speaker 4 (08:56):
Can get you back, even on the days that you
can make it.
Speaker 1 (09:00):
So we worked it out and I started doing the
show again and O four and did it for the
next twenty years, and we did our last one last
year and again that Scoreboards show was a great show,
had a twenty eight year run. But it's gone now,
and I've had a lot of people ask me about it.
It's gone now. So I'm doing the high school games
on Friday night on the Victory Plus the free sports
app that also carries the Dallas Stars, and they carry
(09:21):
the Texas Rangers.
Speaker 4 (09:25):
But at the time in one.
Speaker 1 (09:29):
We were carrying Westlake on Friday and on Thursdays, we
were doing a high school game of the week. Now,
there were not as many Thursday games back then as
there are now because of the proliferation of school growth,
which necessitates Thursday games, because several school districts only have
one or two school district stadiums. Flugerville really, you know,
(09:53):
they build a stadium over by Hendrickson, and there's one
by Conley. But the schools all want to play at
the field, so they pretty it's play at the field
unless they for home games. So that's why there's a
Thursday game over there every week. And uh, and the
same thing goes with round Rock. The Round Rock i SD.
You have the Palace on Parmer and and you have
Dragon Stadium, uh on the Round Rock campus, and Leander
(10:16):
you have a C. Bible Junior Memorial Stadium, and you
and you have Vandergriff has its own stadium because it's
the farthest west south there Monroe Stadium.
Speaker 4 (10:24):
It's campus.
Speaker 1 (10:25):
But then the other one, of course is Gupton where
Cedar Park and Vista Ridge played their home games kind
of across the street from Visdam. So back then you
didn't have as many schools. Vista Ridge didn't even exist
at the time, and neither did Vandigrift and neither did Uh. Uh,
(10:46):
what's the what's the one I'm thinking of? Uh, Cedar
Ridge that didn't That didn't exist at the time, So, uh,
you didn't. You didn't have too many Thursday games, but
you had a few, and there was always some on
the A I, S.
Speaker 5 (10:59):
D S.
Speaker 1 (11:00):
And that week we had a non district game between
what was then called Lanier High School. We know it
now is Navarro Early College. Back then it was Lanier
and they were hosting Kerrville Tyvee, a good Kerrville TYV team.
Now this is before Curville Tyvee had Johnny Manziel's before
he played, but they were good, and that game was
(11:21):
going to be at House Park, just down the street
from the radio station. So the plan was I would
actually drive to meet with each of the coaches. This
is pre doing this on the internet and zoom and
conference calls and stuff like that.
Speaker 2 (11:39):
I couldn't do that today.
Speaker 1 (11:41):
Yeah, it'd be a little bit. Things are a little
more far flung now. But I was going to drive
to Kerrville and meet with the coach. I had already
met with a coach at the time was Wade Johnston
was the coach at then Lanier High and I'd met
with him on Monday, and I was supposed to go
on Tuesday morning, September eleventh. I was supposed to go
that morning, and I was planning to leave my house
(12:02):
at six am because it was going to take me
a couple hours to get down there, and then I
was going to meet with him around eight thirty, so
i'd planned to do that. I got sick Monday night.
I don't know if it was a food poisoning thing
or just a stomach bug, but.
Speaker 4 (12:16):
I was really ill.
Speaker 1 (12:18):
And I woke up about five o'clock in the morning
on Tuesday and I.
Speaker 4 (12:21):
Was really ill.
Speaker 1 (12:23):
So I called and I left a message at the
field house on the answering machine saying I wouldn't be
able to make it. But he had already sent me
his roster and two D lineup and stats, and I
had all that information to prepare, and I said, if
it's okay with you'll just record a pregame interview with
you on the field early on Thursday. So I'd left
(12:44):
that message for me and I went back to bed.
I was sick, didn't feel well at all. My phone
rings about and I went straight I'd taken some medicine.
I went straight back to bed, and my phone rings
about nine fifteen, nine thirty, and I answered it and
(13:05):
it was Chad Hastings, who worked with us at the time,
and Chad was my analyst on the Thursday game of
the week. Keith worked with me on the Friday West
Lay games. Chad worked with me on Thursday. And I
woke up and I was barely awake, and he said, hey,
I'm just checking with you to see are they planning
Are we still planning to go forward with what we're
(13:27):
going to do with the broadcast. I thought he was
making a reference to me being ill, because I also
left a message saying, hey, I'm not going to Curville.
Speaker 4 (13:34):
I'm sick. I'll you know, I'll be hopefully i'll be
well enough to be in later day. I'll let you know.
So I thought that's what he was referring to.
Speaker 1 (13:40):
And I said, no, I'll be fine by Thursday, because no,
I'm talking about what everything else is happening. And I said,
what do you mean and he said, turn on your TV.
The whole world's gone crazy. I always remember him saying
that I had no idea what had happened. So then
I turned on the television and I saw everything that happened.
(14:00):
I couldn't believe it, couldn't believe my eyes. And so
my initial thought was, there's no way they are going
to play these games. But the schools overwhelmingly said they would.
(14:20):
President Bush had said, you know, we're going to continue
with normal life and we're not going to be intimidated
by terrorists and all this other kind of stuff. As
it turned out, forty eight of the fifty states that
had high school football game schedule that week and played
those games. Only two states. New York was one and
(14:42):
I think the other was Massachusetts or something. Those are
the only two states in the country that called off
games for that weekend. So the games would go forward.
So we did this game from the roof at House Park,
and it just felt strange and sad and eerie and weird.
But we did the game. There was a very patriotic
(15:04):
halftime performance. But the bands that put together and Tibe
won handily. I want to say it was like forty
eight to seven or something like that. They won handily.
Speaker 2 (15:12):
Why do I know that's the exact correct score.
Speaker 4 (15:14):
It might be my, I be, I don't know, I
don't know.
Speaker 1 (15:17):
The next night, Keith Mortland and I drive over to
College Station. Westlake is playing A and M Consolidated, and
this was expected to be a good matchup, even though
Westlake was probably the computer would tell you maybe a
slight favorite one. But A and M Consolidate was really
good and it was a really hard fought game, and
(15:39):
there was a unified halftime patriotic show with the west
Lake band and the A and M Consolidate band. It
was a really stirring, touching halftime show as well. And
Westlake lost the game to a consolie I want to
say it was fourteen seven of fourteen ten. It was
(16:00):
a close game but they lost. But again, it was
a weird, strange kind of feeling about what was going on,
but it was like, we're going to continue with our
lives now. College football called off games that weekend. Texas,
as it happened, was on a bye week. They had
an open date, so it did not affect them, but
(16:24):
they had an open date weekend on the schedule in
terms of it did not affect them in terms of
the schedule itself, but it was just a strange sad,
bizarre time that became a very determined one. Obviously, Baseball
shut down for ten days and then it reopened and
then they finished up the regular season, and there was
a real patriotic fervor. And in the world change, it
(16:45):
changed a lot, changed in how we go through airports.
It changed with our military. I had a brother who
served during the Persian Gulf War and my father served
in the Korean War, and both of them said, well,
my brother said that they that they had never seen
(17:07):
military appreciation light. They began to see it after nine
to eleven, certainly with the Persian Gulf or starting, but
really after nine to eleven the way it went, so
it was a bizarre time. I always remember that, and
we always remember those victims and those who lost their
lives in the attack on the Twin Towers and the
(17:30):
one on the Pentagon as well United Flight ninety three,
all of the as well going down by Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
We always remember all of those, all of the losses
that happened for that. But that comes to mind every
year on nine to eleven for me, and it really
kind of hits home when it's on either a Tuesday,
(17:52):
which is an exact anniversary of the day since at
Avenans it were on a Thursday when there's a high
school football game, because we were scheduled to do and
did a high school game that night. But it was
it was very, very strange. All right, coming up, we're
gonna hear from long wrn's head coach, Steve Sarkisian, will
do that. If you have thoughts and memories as well,
about nine to eleven pheel free open form. You can
(18:18):
put those memories or questions up on our text line.
Just text the word Texas follow by your question or
comment to eight one five three zero. Standard messaging and
data rates may apply. This is a thirteen hundred the zone.
As we mentioned, our our text line is open as
well if you have membories. Jake does not have memories
(18:38):
of it. You were what one year old at the time,
the tender age of one of that half Wow. Okay,
so that's why Jake didn't have memories of it. Chuck
in Houston does, He says, absolutely remember that day. I
was living in clear Lake at the time off Eldorado
Boulevard and my son was three years old, and I
stay glued to the TV the entire day hashtag God
(18:59):
Bless the us A. You know, that's another element out
of that. Chuck brings up that radio and television went
all news for like two three days after that when
that happened.
Speaker 4 (19:17):
We didn't.
Speaker 1 (19:18):
It was two days in our case, all the way
up until Thursday, Thursday evening. In fact, our show might
have been I mean, our game might have been the
first thing on this station back out of the news
cycle after forty eight hours of that. Aman CB remembers
that three days prior to that, September eight, two thousand
(19:38):
and one. Three days prior to it, Texas played North Carolina,
It's true at dk R Texas Memorial Stadium, and it
was Background's first game against his former school. It was
the Cole Pittman game where YEP, where they paid tribute
to Cole Pittman, who had perished in a in a
automobile accident the prior summer as well.
Speaker 4 (20:00):
A man C.
Speaker 1 (20:00):
Powell said he was in third grade in Austin when
jfk was assassinated.
Speaker 4 (20:05):
Our teacher came in.
Speaker 1 (20:05):
The room told us with tears in her eyes and
said President Kenny was supposed to come to Austin that day.
Speaker 4 (20:14):
That's true.
Speaker 1 (20:14):
He said, story was a Billy Graham told him not
to go to Texas. A lot of people told him
not to go to Texas. A lot of advisors had
told him not to go to Texas. And he was
due to come and after the lunch, he was supposed
to get down here and speak to the football team
which was practicing, and coach Royal was was stringing out
(20:36):
a tie to go to a lunch of his own
when when he heard the when he heard the news
come over the radio.
Speaker 2 (20:41):
I did not know that yep.
Speaker 1 (20:43):
I was supposed to come in and then on to
San Antonio after that and the CB with one more
memory because this is his alma mater. It was then
Lanier High School. It's now Navarro Early College, he said,
Way Johnson the greatest coach in Lanier High School history.
And Lanier has never been the same since he's like go,
A lot has changed with that school other than the
name as well, and that's been part of the challenge
(21:05):
for them to try to turn it around to get
into the postseason. All right, let's hear from Logorns head
coach Steve Sarkisian start from the media availability this morning.
Here's his opening comments.
Speaker 6 (21:18):
First and foremost great opportunity for us.
Speaker 7 (21:20):
We talked about it on Monday, but to be back
at home, playing in front of our crowd afternoon game
and exciting time. Obviously, you know, with the way our
schedule is formatted, we get three straight home games and
then we're not home for a while, and this year
in particular, we only have six home games, and so
cherishing these opportunities that we have in DKR, making the
(21:42):
most of them from an experience standpoint, but also making
the most of them from a team perspective, and how
do we make the most of them. That's playing more
consistent and clean football than we have through.
Speaker 6 (21:53):
Two weeks, and it's easy.
Speaker 7 (21:56):
It's easy to see from an offensive perspective what that
looks like in areas where we need to improve, But
I think that's collectively. I think our penalties need to
come down, we need to play a cleaner brand of football.
With that, I don't want to lose our edge. I
don't want to lose our aggressive, our speed, our physicality,
because I think that is something that we take a
(22:17):
lot of pride in. But we got to play smarter
football and that is something that we're striving for.
Speaker 6 (22:22):
So it should be a.
Speaker 7 (22:23):
Great day at DKR, looking forward to a lot of
guys hopefully get an opportunity to play. We've been pushing
more young guys to play. They've get more reps in
practice and hopefully we can get them in and get
them in earlier in the ballgame this week.
Speaker 1 (22:36):
Then it went on too and this goes into some
of why he also also, in addition to just wanting
to get guys more reps, there are some guys who
are out injured, have been injured and or limited in practice.
Guys like Trey Weisner, m at Mosley, the transfer receiver
RESU been able to get on the field. Yet those
(22:59):
two guys. On the offense, DeAndre Moore has been banged up,
and then on the defensive side, there have been some
other guys. Alex January has been injured. So there have
been several guys who have been banged up and injured,
and Sark was asked for an updates on all of
those guys I mentioned in one or two others.
Speaker 7 (23:15):
All those guys will are doubtful to out this week.
I don't have concerns about long term effects about any
of them, but I think we would be putting them
at at risk for long term effects if we forced
him back too soon.
Speaker 6 (23:31):
So that's where those four guys are at all.
Speaker 1 (23:33):
Right, and one more before we get to the break here,
And this is a question with regard.
Speaker 4 (23:40):
To the to the running back situation.
Speaker 1 (23:44):
Since Trey Weisner in all probability probably won't play as
listed as doubtful for the game, they try to get
him healthy. C. J. Baxter of course, is the lead
guy there. Christian Clark got back into the rotation. Jerrick
Gibson of course showed some promise, but Jared also had
a fumbling again, and Jerk had some problems with the
(24:05):
fumbling last year. So Sark was asked about those guys
and the running back room overall.
Speaker 7 (24:14):
You know, I think the running back position in any
level is really important to continue the development of players
that maybe aren't the ones that are getting the bulk
of the carries in game because as we all know,
and you know, injuries kind occur and guys get forced
into action. So you've got to make sure that you're
you're prepping and preparing those guys. I thought it was
(24:36):
really good for Christian Clark to get in there last week.
I think an opportunity for him to watch the tape,
see the tape and then get back to practice this
week to make sure he's running to his style and
how runs hit and fit in game. I'm looking forward
to hopefully seeing James Simon this week as well.
Speaker 6 (24:51):
He's been working very hard, and.
Speaker 7 (24:53):
As far as Jared goes, I hated it for him
last week because he's really worked out the ball, you know,
and he's a physical runner, he's not afraid of contact,
and it was a great punch out. I thought it
was ironic on the punch out that was Larry Turner
Gooden who punched that ball out, who had been with us,
(25:14):
and so here was a guy that was a very.
Speaker 6 (25:16):
Intentional punch on the ball.
Speaker 7 (25:18):
It looked like the way we practice and so it
was great for him to get that exposure. The moment
you think is high and tight, it's not high and
tight enough, especially in traffic.
Speaker 6 (25:28):
And so we got to continue to work with him
because we're going to need him.
Speaker 7 (25:32):
He's going to be an asset for us. His physical
running ability is something that we're going to need as
the season progresses.
Speaker 1 (25:37):
Sark did mention James Simon. He's a freshman from Shreveport,
so keep an eye. He wears jersey number thirty one.
He may well be in the rotation as well on
Saturday against UTEP. All right, up next, we bring it
Inconceivable on this Thursday afternoon here on Sports Radio AM
thirteen Under the Zone, where you always.
Speaker 4 (25:54):
Listen to us for free on the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (25:57):
Second hour of the program here on Sports Radio AM
thirteen under the Zone. Glad to have you with us
on a Thursday afternoon Craig Way alongside the producer Jay Kerman,
and glad to have your input as well on our
text line. Your text the word Texas followed by your
question or comment to eight one five three zero and
just let us know what's on your mind. On that
(26:18):
standard messaging and data rates may apply. A lot of
folks giving us the where I was on nine eleven
twenty one, I was twenty four years ago, and again
it kind of you know, registers in your memory where
and when, where you were on that day and what
you were doing at the time that you found out
about the terrorist attacks there in New York. But we
(26:42):
can take your questions about other things we've heard from
Longhorn's head coach Steve Sarkisian a little bit in the
first hour of the program. We're going to hear more
from Sart coming up in this second hour as well,
but prior to that, we'll have a visit with Babeloffenberg,
the analyst on the Dallas Cowboys Radio Network broadcast, and Babe,
(27:04):
we'll talk some Cowboys with us, but he's also going
to talk.
Speaker 4 (27:08):
About the team that Texas.
Speaker 1 (27:11):
Has facing one Saturday the UTEP minors his connection to
that through his late son Luke, and what an inspirational
story that's coming from that. And we always enjoy talking
to Babe. Babies is a really good dude that he helps
out a lot of people. For example, when we were
(27:34):
texting one another about getting together and doing all this
kind of thing, I told him that I was going
to be up in the Metroplex tomorrow night to broadcast
big time high school football matchup between South Oakcliffe and Longview.
Longview is six A team and South oak Cliff five
A Division two, but SoC beat him.
Speaker 4 (27:55):
Last year.
Speaker 1 (27:56):
South Oakcliffe Sock as so many folks know them, went
all the way the five A Division two state championship
game for the fourth consecutive year they won the first one,
first two, and then.
Speaker 4 (28:10):
They've lost their last two.
Speaker 1 (28:11):
But they've been in the state championship round for four
consecutive years. Longview, of course, last won a title in
twenty eighteen. They're going through a difficult time right now.
They're head coach John King, one of the legends in
this state, just recently had surgery for mouth cancer and
he is not coaching the team right now. But their
(28:33):
team is off to a two and oh start. South
of Cliff's won in one. They won their season over
stunning lely over Galena Park North Shore six A powerhouse
from the Greater Houston, and then lost narrowly to Duncanville,
another sixth A powerhouse last week. So anyway, we were
(28:53):
talking about you know that game, and then he said, well,
I'm working a game as well, and I was like,
what game is that? And he occasionally will step in
as a guest analyst. Completely Gratis, a friend of his,
is the play by play voice of Jesuit College Prep
in Dallas, one of the two private schools in the
(29:15):
UIL system, Jesuit in Dallas and Straight Jesuit in Houston.
And they're playing Highland Park, big time matchup and that'll
be at Highlander stadiumorrow night. So he stepping in And
I drove up last year when I was doing that
scoreboard show and I'm flipping around and I'm listening to
different games, and I.
Speaker 4 (29:33):
Knew the station Jesu was on.
Speaker 1 (29:35):
I did not know that Babe was helping out his
friend who's the play by play voice for Jesuit. I
just have to land on the game and they're that
sounds like Babe.
Speaker 4 (29:42):
So I texted him.
Speaker 1 (29:43):
During the game, like, is that you doing color on
Jesuit versus it was somebody else that were playing.
Speaker 4 (29:48):
He was like, yep, helping out a friend. So he's
doing it again.
Speaker 3 (29:51):
Hey, some people change their fantasy lineups during games. Some
people text the voice of the Longhorns.
Speaker 5 (29:56):
There you go.
Speaker 4 (29:56):
You know that kind of thing.
Speaker 1 (29:57):
So anyway, he's a good dude, and we'll visit with
him to talk about the Cowboys who have this big
game against the New York Giants on Sunday. They have
their home opener and Cowboys kind of surprise some folks
with how competitive they were and had a shot a
(30:20):
week ago even to defeat the defending Super Bowl champion
Eagles in Philly and Lincoln Financial Field. They didn't do it.
They came up short twenty four to twenty, but some
would say at least early on drawing some respect even
as the Eagles and Jake's Washing Commanders are both want
to know, now the Commanders put that on the line tonight,
(30:41):
how you feel. And this one with the Green Bay Packers.
Speaker 2 (30:44):
You know, I was thinking about this today.
Speaker 3 (30:45):
I think it's a more concern with how they look
than what the result is, right because we're still early
in the season. But I'm cautiously optimistic. I think, look,
the Packers defense completely shut down the Lions last week,
and we don't know what Lions offense we're getting this
year with Ben Jonson no longer calling the plays, but
(31:07):
chances are it's going to be a pretty good one.
And the Packers made them look very bad. So I'm
a little bit nervous from that perspective. But look, I
think if Terry mcclaurin can get back up to speed,
we could see a really good game.
Speaker 2 (31:22):
From the Washington offense.
Speaker 3 (31:23):
I'm a little nervous about it, though, I'm Yeah, you
can tell.
Speaker 1 (31:27):
You have any Commanders on your fantasy team.
Speaker 2 (31:30):
I've got Ja Corey krossky Merritt in Dynasty.
Speaker 4 (31:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (31:34):
More so as a long term he could could become
the starter as this season goes along.
Speaker 1 (31:40):
Is he the guy they say call me Bill? He
goes by Bill Cory Krossky Merrit. Yeah, hyphenated name too, Yeah,
but just call me Bill.
Speaker 2 (31:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (31:50):
And the social media team was all over at post
in the old Schoolhouse rock.
Speaker 2 (31:54):
Yeah, just a Bill.
Speaker 1 (31:55):
Yeah, all right? So that Yeah, that's game the night,
four o'clock hour, Roger Wallas will join us. He's gonna
be calling the game between Hayes and Hendrickson at the
field in Fluberville. Computer, by the way, likes one in one.
Hendrickson by three points against Hayes.
Speaker 3 (32:17):
So Hayes has I mean, they showed me a lot
last week. I got to call that game with Cameron
Parker on Texan Live. And they were down and out
of that game. Fluckerville had the ball a two score
lead and they were driving, and Hayes was able to
force a turnover and completely turn the game around and
storm back to win it with late Gabriel Peach touchdown run.
Speaker 4 (32:37):
Yeah in the late seconds, right.
Speaker 2 (32:39):
Yeah, thirteen seconds to go.
Speaker 3 (32:41):
They were down three driving and scored about a forty
yard touchdown.
Speaker 1 (32:45):
Wow, okay, so he'll be there to talk to us
about on let's talk about that. We'll talk from Texas
Longhorns as well, and more. That's coming up again. Updating
the baseball score board. Astros trailing the Blue Jays three
to nothing Toronto batting in the bottom of the fourth
with a runner at third and nobody out either.
Speaker 4 (33:08):
So we'll keep you updated on that.
Speaker 1 (33:11):
David Schneider, who is at the playground, I was already
homeward for the.
Speaker 4 (33:14):
Blue Jays this afternoon.
Speaker 1 (33:16):
So it is a three to nothing Toronto League rubber
match of that three game series. That's an important series
for both of those teams. And David Schneider is just
going to lift a sacrifice fly that will get another
run home for Toronto.
Speaker 4 (33:29):
So it's four nothing Jays as a bat in the
bottom of the.
Speaker 3 (33:32):
Fourth, another surprising score. The Rays are stubbing their toe
here on the road against the White Sox. Remember a
week ago we talked about them winning six in a row,
maybe pushing for that wild card spot, starting to.
Speaker 4 (33:42):
Turn it around, and then all of a sudden, yeah,
not happen.
Speaker 2 (33:44):
Things are unraveling for Tampa all right.
Speaker 4 (33:46):
We'll keep you posted on that.
Speaker 1 (33:48):
Up next, we talk Cowboys and other things with Babeloffenberg
when he joins us next here on thirteen under the Zone.
It's always fun to do this program, but it's even
more fun than to get a chance is to visit
with friends and guys who you respect in the business,
who've been doing it for a while, or next guests.
Of course, you can hear him on our sister station
(34:10):
here in the iHeart Compound ninety eight point one FMCVET,
the home of Austin's all time country favorites. It's also
our FM flagship station for our Logward football broadcast, which
you also hear here on AM thirteen under the Zone.
It's the home of the Dallas Cowboys, and that means
it's Bradsham and bab Bloffenberg who call the action. Folks
(34:33):
have heard Brad on this program many times. He was
my boss for seven years and he's been doing the
Cowboys I think for thirty six and Babe has been
at it for a while and he's been on this
program before. I appreciate you taking the time to how
many years is this now for you? As the radio
analyst on the Cowboys broadcast.
Speaker 5 (34:51):
I believe, and I don't always look at these things.
I'm not big on looking back and adding up how
many games and all this. But I think it's my
twenty ninth year as the analyst because I did the
pregame and postgame for the first couple of years. After
I finished playing or they got finished playing me. People
always ask Craig, People always ask, you know, hey, when
did you retire.
Speaker 4 (35:12):
I'm like, no, I didn't retire.
Speaker 5 (35:14):
They retired me. I said, ninety percent of the guys
in professional sports get retired. And every now and then
you get to be a Roger Staubach or Troy Aikman
and you have that press conference where you announced your retirement.
You know, Jimmy Johnson announced my retirement.
Speaker 1 (35:31):
Well, but see what you got to do was you
got to transition.
Speaker 4 (35:34):
You weren't retiring from the sport.
Speaker 1 (35:37):
You were just changing positions from quarterback to radio analysts, right,
And that a way to look at it.
Speaker 5 (35:43):
Well, that's exactly right. And I always said, Craig, you
know number one New Year's resolutions. I always say, set
your goals low so that you achieve them. You don't
want to put out some lofty achievement and then you
come up short. You feel like a failure. So usually
right around you know us e. But my goal is
to you know, drink a little bit more, have more Peezza,
(36:04):
and watch more sports. And typically I get finished with
the year and I said, wow, I accomplished my goal.
Speaker 4 (36:10):
You met it all in their early stages probably of
the year. That's good.
Speaker 5 (36:14):
Yes. Yes. My other goal, Craig, just so you know,
was to never have to pay to get into an
NFL game. And so far I've either been a player
or broadcaster, so I have yet to buy a ticket
to an NFL game. So that is that an achievement
of sorts?
Speaker 1 (36:29):
Yes it is, Yes, it is, and that's why we
wanted to make sure that that continued for you coming down. Also,
so when you come down this Saturday, it's your first
time ever in dk R Texas Memorial Stadium.
Speaker 5 (36:41):
It'll be my first game there. And what's funny is,
as you will know, you know when you're doing Cowboy
games and typically play Sunday, and I mean to go
down there. I'm prepping usually all day Sunday. Matter of fact,
I'm doing the Craig Way thing this week and do
it a high school game Friday night, and they're going
to go down for the ut U TEP game Saturday
(37:02):
and then back up obviously for Cowboys on Sunday. So
but no, I'm excited to be there to see it.
I'm actually excited to watch arch Manning. You get to
see him up close and personal. It's one thing is
you know, you watch guy on TV and I'll be
on the sideline for some portion, and so it's always
good to go and you know, you see these guys
(37:24):
up again, up close and personal. Obviously you see them,
but I always say, as long as I've been around it,
you've played and blah blah blah, and you know you
know they're big man, right, you know these are big,
powerful men in the NFL. Yeah, but there's two guys
that have stood out to me where right.
Speaker 4 (37:40):
I knew their height, I knew their weight.
Speaker 5 (37:42):
I've watched them, but you go down in the field
and you stand next to them, and Cam Newton I
was like, okay, this is not a quarterback. This is
a defensive event or something. And the other one was
Calvin Johnson, of course, Mega john And you just said,
how does anybody, how does any corner this guy runs
a slant, how do you get through to the ball.
(38:03):
I mean, he's six six, he's got arms like pythons.
And again I knew how big he was. I'd seen
him play and all that. But you get down then
you go. My goodness, So I'm kind of excited to
watch arch throw the football Saturday.
Speaker 6 (38:18):
All right.
Speaker 1 (38:18):
Now, this is not meant in any way, shape or
for him to make you feel any more aged.
Speaker 4 (38:23):
But I'm just trying to I'm trying to.
Speaker 1 (38:25):
All I'm trying to do is slot in eras when
you were playing, was Arch's grandfather still playing? Was Archie
still in the league and still playing when you were playing?
Did you have any overlap with him in his career?
Speaker 5 (38:41):
He was still in the league. I believe he My
rookie year was eighty three, and I believe his last
year was eighty three or eighty four possibly, Yeah, so yeah,
so he was in we I wouldn't really call it
overlapping at that stage. I was young and promising in
my career and I'll never forget why Tittle. I was
at a banquet, Craig. It was a Washington DC quarterback
(39:04):
club and they were inducting these Hall of Fame quarterbacks
into the Washington DC Quarterback Club. Anyway, wy Tittle gets up.
He's one of the guys receiving an award, as was
Bart Starr, and I forget the third one, but anyway,
he gets up and he said, there's four stages two
quarterbacks career in the NFL. He said, you're young and
promising at stage one. Stage two, you become the backup,
(39:27):
and everybody knows you're better than the starter, and how
can the coach be such an idiot as to not
play this guy. Stage three, you become the starter, and
then they wonder how the coach can be so stupid
as to play this guy, because you know he's a bum.
And then stage four they throw your dinners and they
tell you how great you were. So he was in
stage four and I was in stage one. At the time,
(39:49):
I was young and promises.
Speaker 1 (39:51):
Okay, all right, well, and by the way, you know,
there was an old saying down here that was coined
by Donovan Forbes, who was a former backup quarterback at
Texas the late eighties like eighty eight, eighty nine, and
Donvin always said, the most popular man on campus is
the backup quarterback At ut. Sure, so that's something something
to keep in mind. Their baby Bloffenberg's was okay, yes.
Speaker 5 (40:15):
No, And I know I knew when quinn yours left.
And obviously I don't say there's a lightning rod for controversy,
but you do the game. You know that, you know
everything that goes on down there. And I said they're
going to miss him more than they think they are,
not because Arts couldn't do it or whoever's going to
come after him, but they got pretty good quarterback played
(40:35):
down there from him for a number of years, and
to your point, the backup quarterback, everybody wants the other guy.
And trust me, I think Arts is going to be great.
Speaker 4 (40:46):
I do, but.
Speaker 5 (40:47):
That's that was a tough road going up to Ohio State.
Don't need to tell you that. And basically your first
major start. I know you'd started, but it's like I'm
watching the money in that football. JJ McCarthy's up there.
Sure he couldn't have played any worse for about half
of the game whatever, you know, but he came around.
It's why I hate all the knee jerk. Guy gets
(41:10):
one game and we've decided he can or cannot play.
I mean, especially at that position, right, I know this.
And somebody said, oh, Jaya McCarthy will be comfortable after
three or four games. I said, no, no, no, he'll
be comfortable after three or four years. Right now, there's
a big learning curve.
Speaker 4 (41:27):
Yeah, I know.
Speaker 1 (41:28):
This would absolutely just shock you, shake you to your
foundation to learn that a lot of the people, a
lot of the people who were bagging on Arch because
of the difficulty in the game one, were a lot
of the same people who were bagging on Quinn you
weres last year and saying, hey.
Speaker 4 (41:44):
You got to get arts in there.
Speaker 1 (41:45):
And then these same people came back, a lot of
them fans, and said, you know, Quinn wasn't so bad
after all.
Speaker 4 (41:51):
So well that happened.
Speaker 5 (41:53):
Hey, Craig, Quinn is in stage four. They throw you
dinners and they tell you how great you were.
Speaker 4 (42:01):
While being promising in the Dolphins camp.
Speaker 5 (42:04):
Right now, exactly, there we go, here we.
Speaker 4 (42:07):
Go, all right, So Babel Offerberg's with us, and.
Speaker 1 (42:11):
I'm gonna I want to get to what I refer
to as the higher calling, the higher purpose of the
weekend in a moment. But I do want to talk
about your day job for a moment, or at least
the team you cover for your day job a little bit,
and it down here, and the folks who reacted to
the game pretty much, they pretty much settled in on
(42:33):
that opener in Philadelphia's Hey, maybe these guys.
Speaker 4 (42:38):
Aren't so bad after all. We'll find out.
Speaker 1 (42:41):
Is that kind of the general vibe that's been in
the Metroplex after that opener in Philadelphia?
Speaker 5 (42:47):
I would say that's accurate. And it's funny because I
don't know where moral victories started up, because then now
you have to say there are no moral victories and
all that stuff. I just don't look at it that
way as a royal victory or any of that. Again,
I don't even know why we bring up the term.
But what that did let you know is you can
play with the team that was the best team in
(43:09):
the NFL last year. We'll find out if they're the
best year this year. But I think that was a
very positive sign for the Cowboys that, hey, you've got
the ball in your hands with two and a half
minutes to play, and you come down and score and
you win the game, or you have a chance to
win the game, right And they didn't. But I think
to walk out of there to hold Philadelphia like they did.
(43:31):
To play the defense they did in the second half,
that's an encouraging sign. I mean, I think if you
play like that, you're going to win a lot of
football games.
Speaker 1 (43:42):
Yeah, all right, with that in mind, what's your examination?
Your early examination of this matchup with the Giants on Sunday.
Speaker 5 (43:50):
Scary because we know how bad the Giants have been
for a decade now, and they look terrible against Washington.
They did not score a touchdown, they put up six points.
Russell Wilson was rushed and virtually every throw they're missing.
Their their only stud offensive lineman, Andrew Thomas. He's out.
(44:11):
I don't know if he'll play this week. Sounds like
he won't, but he was out last week. And so,
I mean, it's one of those where if you beat
the Giants, well, of course you beat the Giants to
the Giants, lose to the Giants, the panic will set
in and now you're owing too. And it's funny, great,
I'm doing all my notes and everything, and you would think, well,
(44:31):
own to, you can recover from that. There's a seventeen
game season since nineteen ninety you start owing to. Only
twelve percent of those teams have made the playoffs. So
while you say, well, there's a lot of football still
to be played, history shows you that you start owing
to ninety percent of the time you're not making the playoffs.
So in that sense, it's imperative that they win this
(44:54):
game someday against the Giants.
Speaker 1 (44:56):
One of those years obviously was him AT's MVP season
ninety three hold out, and that's obviously a big deal,
which brings me to ask you, have you seen the
documentary and what's your take on it?
Speaker 5 (45:09):
People can't believe it, but I have not seen it.
I have not watched it. I won't watch it because
I know what happened. I was there.
Speaker 4 (45:20):
Do you know how the movie ends?
Speaker 5 (45:22):
Well? And I just know that. I you know, I've
heard things and they played some they played some cuts
from it on our flagship here in Dallas, one of
five point three. If I'm the fan, and I've heard cuts,
and I said, that didn't happen like that. So I
don't want to go through that, look at it and
say that that didn't happen. It's like, I love Craig.
(45:43):
I love documentaries. I mean something on PBS. It's a
true documentary, and I don't like watching movies that are
based on a true story or because then you walk
away saying wow, So Craig Way punched the sid Texas
and as well, that really didn't happen. They just took
(46:03):
a creative liberty because you had to, and you know,
and then the love interest, the quarterback was actually dating
the coacher's wife. No, no, that didn't happen, you know,
But it's based on a true story. So I'm a
big fan of documentaries and this one the Netflix thing.
I can just it's a soap.
Speaker 4 (46:20):
Opera, right, yeah, exactly, That's how I felt. That's how it.
Speaker 1 (46:24):
Felt about Friday Night Light the movie, because I lived it.
I was broadcasting it in eighty eight and there was
a lot of stuff that did not happen and the
way it turned out in that movie, right.
Speaker 5 (46:34):
So I have meet to watch. Maybe I'll watch it
down the road. But shoot, I've been I've been friends
with Troy Well since nineteen eighty nine, So what are
we working on thirty five thirty six years? And there's
nothing he's going to say on that show that I
haven't heard. And there's some things that he did not
(46:55):
say on that show that I have heard, and those
those are the good ones.
Speaker 1 (46:58):
All right, So let me get to the what I
call the higher purpose of this conversation. I wanted to
do this so, you know, so here I'm doing my
I'm doing my game prep uh for this match up
between Texas and U TAP, And I'm looking at and
very good game notes that the miners have and and
I'm going through all of that.
Speaker 4 (47:15):
And then there's the.
Speaker 1 (47:17):
Entire right side column of page seven of the notes.
UH has a big bright orange banner with a white
number two, and it says Luke Laffenburg and and and
I knew I knew obviously about uh.
Speaker 4 (47:35):
Luke's journey and your journey with him.
Speaker 1 (47:37):
And you've you've uh, you know, uh posting some really
heartwarming and heartfelt things about Luke and how he battled
cancer for two years and uh and and but but
but I am curious to get your thoughts on this,
because uh what UTEP has done, and I think this
is a really cool deal uh to where they're going
to continue to pay tribute to Luke by having a player.
(48:02):
First of all, players have worn these Luke stickers on
the back of their helmets since the start of twenty nineteen,
and and then and then they've had different players where
the jersey and I'll get to the identity of the
player and the story behind that in a moment for
this year. But I'm just curious to get your your
thoughts on how this evolved. And uh, and I know
(48:26):
that's that's a big reason why you're coming down.
Speaker 4 (48:28):
For the game.
Speaker 5 (48:30):
Well, I hate to use the word organic because I
think he gets overused, but so just as a backdrop
for those who don't know, So, I had a sun booth.
He was he was getting he was at a junior
college that you went to, Texas A and m was
a walk on, preferred walk on there got to block
he was a tight end. So he got to block
my house Garrett every day in training camp in practice.
(48:52):
So I'll tell a quick story here. So the one here,
I'm a Cowboys training camp in Oxnart and Luke is
a freshman down there the two thirty and anyway, he's
going up against Miles Carrett and practice because he's a
scout team tight end. And I said, Luke, what's it?
How is it trying to block Miles? And he said, well, Dad,
he said, if I sink my weight and I can
(49:13):
get my hands on him and I lock out, and
I thought to myself, O, the kid's delusional. You know,
NFL tackles aren't gonna be able to block this guy.
So he goes through the list and said, if I
do all those things, he said, I can keep him
out for like half a second, okay. And I said, well,
what if you don't have a good technique and he said, oh,
he just throws me. So I said, don't. I said,
(49:34):
one of two things are going to happen, Luke. When
you go up against a guy like that, He's going
to make you better or you're going to quit. But anyway,
long and short, he ends up at the junior college,
he's getting recruited out of there, and then he comes down.
Well he cancer December twenty sixth I'll never forget the
date obviously, and we tested him for about ten days.
They couldn't figure out what was wrong. He had a
very rare and aggressive form of leukemia, something called Burkett
(49:57):
lymphoma Burke at Lukepian. He goes through the treatment and
you know, the odds were fifty to fifty that he
would live at that point. He goes through the treatment
chemo awful, everything terrible anyway, makes it through, builds his
body back up. I mean, I've been around the NFL
and players and all that. I've never seen anybody work
(50:17):
harder than he worked to get himself back trying to
play football. And he did it, got a scholarship to UTEP,
and he was there in spring practice and he came
back on him and the doctors had sorry, the doctors
had told us we kind of get one shot at this,
(50:38):
and so when he relapsed, that was not not good news.
And so he goes through. We lost him August twenty
second of twenty nineteen, and coach Stina Dimmo was the
head coach there at the time at UTEP, and he
started up all this with the Luke sticker, given the
(50:59):
jersey number to the number two, who's actually going to
retire the number? And then they just said, he said,
let's give it to a deserving guy. So they give
it to somebody that exemplified what Luke did with his fight,
his spirit, his work ethic. I mean he'd been there
two months. He was getting votes for team captain in
the spring. So Vana Demmel was tremendous. Unfortunately, coach Dimble
(51:24):
passed away about six months ago. But anyway, so then
the first one to wear number two, and so they
were just going to wear number two, not with the
name Lathenberg on the jersey. I'm watching the game. There
was a young man by the name of Justin Garrett
who is now on the University of Texas football staff
with the running backs there. He was the first one
(51:46):
to wear number two. But I'm watching the game on
TV and I see the number two, and I see
Lothenburg on the back of the jersey, and I mean
I started balling. So here's the young man.
Speaker 4 (52:01):
He didn't have to do that.
Speaker 5 (52:02):
What kid, what college kid doesn't want his name on
the back of the jersey? Right, yeah, and he put
he put Lofenberg and played with it through the year.
So that now tradition has kind of continued. And this
year it's a young man by the name of Marcus Torres,
a local Elpaso kid who was a walk on and
you know, earned earned himselves scholarship this year. So anyway,
(52:22):
great kid got a chance to go out to practice
and talk with him, and obviously called him on the
phone after he was awarded like the number two, and
actually got a call from a few people. I sent
you the video of him talking about.
Speaker 6 (52:36):
It, but it was pretty cool.
Speaker 1 (52:37):
Well, and then here's the Paul Harvey rest of the
story into that for folks I don't know. Marc has
of course played at El Pass So Pebble Hills. He
was a Pebble Hills spartan where he played for his
dad Mark.
Speaker 4 (52:50):
His dad Mark is now.
Speaker 1 (52:52):
The head coach of the Hayes Red Well they used
to be the Hayes Rebels with the Hayes Hawks, the
Hayes Hawks who will play the Hendrton Hawks tonight tonight
over at the field in Flugerville or as I always
call it because they spell it like Fluerville, the field
in Flugerville, and uh, they're going to play over there tonight.
(53:12):
My my analyst on long worn football games, Roger Wallace,
who's a sports record at k x a N. They
televised a live high school game on KBVO every Thursday
night and they're going to televise that game to night.
Speaker 4 (53:26):
So I think it's really cool.
Speaker 1 (53:27):
There's there's the local connection and that Mark Torres is
the head coach at Hayes and his son Marcus is
going to be here on Saturday and he's more than
just a symbolic like you said, you h you, you
have to earn that. And then beyond that, he's only
too deep. He's listed as a slot receiver as a
(53:47):
redshirt freshman. And when I made up my broadcast boards, uh,
it was really cool that that that the number two
is on there. But I'll just look for the name
Laffenburg on the back instead of Taurus right right when.
Speaker 5 (53:58):
You see Lofberg, just know that it's actually Torres. I
don't have a I don't have a year of eligibility
that I was able to scraunge up.
Speaker 4 (54:05):
Yeah, yeah, you know what what funny?
Speaker 5 (54:07):
Very quickly last week he was going to get his
first catch, and I mean he was Malachai Nelson, the
UTEP quarterback, and rolling out he's open. He just missed him.
But I said, I texted Marcus after. I said, Marcus,
I thought you were going to get your first major
college catch, and he said, well, I'll save it for Austin.
So hopefully he gets one tomorrow and you can talk
about him. That'd be cool, but great, just a great kid,
great kid.
Speaker 4 (54:28):
That'll be great.
Speaker 5 (54:29):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (54:30):
And then the final thing I want to ask back,
you made reference to it. I made reference to it
before he came on here. I said, Baby is a
guy who does favors for friends. So you're actually going
to be the analyst on the Jesuit broadcast tomorrow night.
Speaker 4 (54:43):
When they play Highland Park, is it right?
Speaker 5 (54:46):
I will? Uh. This gentleman by the name of Tom
Wallsh he's actually a big time attorney here in Dallas,
but he'd done Jesuit football for like twenty five years.
He retired this year, but I think he's still doing
about eight games, so I don't know what retirement means.
So he had asked me if i'd join him for
this game, which I will. So I'll do this game
(55:07):
tomorrow night Iland Park Jesuit and then drive down Saturday
for obviously Longhorns and your tup miners and drive back
Saturday night and two Cowboys on Sunday. I tell you,
I'm on a craig Way schedule.
Speaker 4 (55:20):
It's it's the life we lead and we like it. Hey,
I appreciate you.
Speaker 1 (55:24):
I appreciate you hopping on and giving us the whole
story obviously about Luke and that that's going to make
its way onto the Texas broadcast on Saturday as well
we'll talk about that and I and and as always,
I appreciate getting an opportunity to visit with you, and
I'll look forward maybe on down the road later on
this season to another chat if that's okay with you.
Speaker 5 (55:45):
Oh, and you know, anytime, and I really appreciate you,
and I will tell your audience. I listened to Craig
Way Saturdays. If I'm driving around, I listen to long
Horn football. I always feel like you can learn things
from other nobody how long you been doing it or
how you think you are, you always you always learn
and and sometimes steal things you know from other broadcasters.
(56:09):
I remember Darryl Razor Ray and I'll be quicker. I'm
sure you got this great. Daryl Razor Ray does the
Stars game and I'm watching the game and he said
there was a big hit on the ice. He said, whoa,
that was a bowel shaker e l BO. I text him,
I said, Razor, gotta be honest with you. I was,
that's great. I was laughing. My you know what, I said,
(56:31):
I may have to steal that. And he texted me back,
he said, it's not stealing, it's research.
Speaker 4 (56:37):
That's it. That's it.
Speaker 5 (56:38):
So so I have researched, Craig Way, how's that.
Speaker 1 (56:42):
Well, if anything comes up researchable and I'm gonna I'm
going to remember Bowelshaker now that that one.
Speaker 4 (56:48):
I'll just have to remember that one.
Speaker 5 (56:49):
Now.
Speaker 4 (56:50):
That's good. Hey, thanks again. I appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (56:54):
And uh and uh, I hope you enjoy the time
on Saturday.
Speaker 4 (56:57):
Look forward to seeing you get around the corner.
Speaker 5 (56:59):
I'm going to see you tomorrow.
Speaker 4 (57:01):
That's right, that's right.
Speaker 5 (57:03):
Yeah, okay, thanks.
Speaker 4 (57:05):
Babe, we'll see you tomorrow. Take care of all right.
Speaker 1 (57:08):
That's baby Lofenburg, the analyst on the Dallas Cowboys Radio Network,
And yeah, he'll be down there for the game.
Speaker 4 (57:15):
And a great story, great story.
Speaker 1 (57:17):
And I love the fact that Luke's name is on
the back of the player's jerseys, because that's something you
don't hear, is the you know, you hear about somebody
wearing their number or retiring the number, but you don't
know you actually wear the name on the back of
the jersey. And Marcus Torus will be doing that tomorrow.
That's really cool. All right, we'll continue here. We'll hear
more from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkisian when we continue
(57:38):
on thirteen Under the Zone. Our thanks to baby Lofenberg
joining us here on the program. Our man Sea Pala said, Yeah,
I really enjoy Brad Sham and Babe on Cowboys games.
You can hear him on ninety eight point one FMK
Vett noon this Sunday for the Cowboys taking on the
New York Football Giants, trying to get to one in
one there and Babe outline the importance of that update.
(58:00):
On the baseball are now on the top of the
seventh inning in Toronto, Astro is still trailing the Blue
Jays Ford to nothing in that contest. Let's hear some
more from Longborne's head coach, Steve Sarkisian.
Speaker 4 (58:11):
And when we.
Speaker 1 (58:14):
Were last listening last hour to SARKI had given us
the injury update, which, by the way, leads me we
need to do this the DJC law injury update, which
you hear during this segment every Thursday, because normally, normally
Wednesday night is when the SEC student Athlete Availability Report
(58:37):
is put out, and it does if you're in a
conference game. So I think it's Vanderbilt in South Carolina
this week, though I went Tennessee, Georgia. If you're in
a conference game, it'll be up there non conference not
required to post it up there for that. So, but
we heard Sark last hour talk about the guys who were,
as he called it, doubtful to out a chance that
(59:01):
Trey Wisner won't be on the field, that DeAndre Moore
won't play, that Dylan m Cutch it no, Dalen the
Cutcher was fine, he'll play, the Emmitt Mosley wouldn't play
on the offensive side, Alex January on the defensive side.
That those guys would probably still be out of the
lineup on that he said. Doubtful to out is the
way that Sart described it.
Speaker 3 (59:23):
Yeah, and the good news was he dismissed any concerns
about them coming into SEC play at least that's what
he told us long term.
Speaker 1 (59:29):
Yeah, not expected. I think a lot of this is
done out of precaution to make sure guys are healthy
and ready to go once conference play does begin. All right,
let's let's hear what he had to say about the
explosive play element. And we talked about this and you'll
be able to hear long worn weekly with with Coach
(59:50):
Sark coming away at six o'clock this evening when we
recorded the program last night, he talked about wanting to
see the uptick in explosive places, which he got to
see last Saturday.
Speaker 7 (59:59):
I think Would says is one you know, I think
when you when you look at the skill set of
kind of the three guys that were kind of catching
those balls, right or the majority of them, Parker, Ryan
and Jack all have you know, can stretch the field ability.
And I think sometimes when we think explosive plays, we
think always throw it over their head, and a lot
(01:00:21):
of times those a lot of those throws can be
made kind of in that intermediate range, and those guys
have the stridelink to get there. I think we saw
the explosive playability of a Jordan Washington, another guy who
can do that, and Amari Winston, and so I what
I like about this group and then all those guys
you just referenced, we're not reliant upon one or two
(01:00:43):
guys to create those explosive plays. I think we've got
a roster now full of players that can do that.
The ball can be distributed, you know, kind of equally
and evenly around and so if you want to take
away Ryan Wingo down the field, Parker Livingstone can make
his plays Jack Andres. You know in Washington, when Demo
gets back, we all know what he's capable of. When
(01:01:03):
Trey Weisner gets back into the fold, what he's capable of.
So I think for us, that's that's the comforting part,
is that we can do all that with their group
that was out there last week, knowing we have more
guys that'll be back for us. But yet we're not
just reliant upon one or two of them. A lot
of these guys have explosive play making ability. And I
also think Arch has the ability to make those throws.
(01:01:25):
You know, there's throws that he can make, you know,
down the field, there's throws that he can make in
those intermediate ranges. And then he can create explosive plays
with his legs. And so there's kind of three levels
to it all, not to mention the run game, and
I think if we can get that going to be
that last piece to this puzzle, we can really be
an explosive offensive football team. But to do that, we
(01:01:46):
need to remain consistent, and that's blocking, that's fundamentals, that's technique,
that's details in our routes, things of that nature, so
that that when we get those explosive plays. You know
a few of those came back last week.
Speaker 6 (01:01:59):
You know, we had it with.
Speaker 7 (01:02:00):
Tough holding penalty on Trevor Gooseby on a run that
was a tough call on him.
Speaker 6 (01:02:05):
I think we had a block in the back by.
Speaker 7 (01:02:06):
Aaron Butler on an explosive play to Parker Livingston. So
we got to kind of like, as I talked about
minimizing some of these self inflicted wounds, those are some
of the things that I'm talking about.
Speaker 1 (01:02:16):
All Right, we'll hear more from Sar next hour. We're
back to wrap up hour number two. I'm thirteen under
the zone thurn in final hour on the program. Here,
I'm thirteen under the zone Craig Way alongside the producer.
Glad to have Jay Carmen along. Did you enjoy that
conversation we have with Baby Bloffenberger there.
Speaker 2 (01:02:34):
That's great. Yeah, it's fascinating.
Speaker 3 (01:02:36):
I will be looking out for that number two at youtub,
not just this season, but every year after that.
Speaker 1 (01:02:42):
Yeah, yeah, it's it's I think it's a pretty inspirational
story and I wanted Babe to be able to talk
about it. I mean, I can certainly mention it myself
and talk about it and what it means and all
that sort of stuff. But it's good to hear him
(01:03:09):
since it was Babe's son Luke who led that life
and then and then lost his battle with cancer back
in twenty nineteen. But for first Dana Demmel, the head coach,
to make that decision to have a player where the number,
and then beyond that, to have the jersey not only
(01:03:32):
have the number, but to have Luke's name on the back.
I think that's pretty cool. And we'll ask Bobby Walden
about it, their coach. I'm gonna Scotty Walden, excuse me,
We'll ask Scotty Walden about it, their coach coming.
Speaker 4 (01:03:44):
Up, and.
Speaker 1 (01:03:47):
We'll ask him about it, because we're going to visit
with him after we leave there this afternoon because they're
on the practice field today. But we're going to record
the conversation and we'll have the conversation tomorrow the program
coming up in a few minutes, Roger Wallace will join
us to talk about and here's another connection to that obviously,
with Hayes playing the night and we'll visit with Roger
(01:04:10):
not only to talk about that game, but also with
what's going on with the longhorns and other topics as well,
so I have to do that. So more from Long
Wrns head coach Steve Sarkisian. This is from today's Thursday
media availability and they do it by zoom, and it's
the last conversation he has with the media before the game,
(01:04:31):
or at least before his pregame conversation with me on Saturday,
which we do about winds up being around an hour
forty five, an hour and a half to an hour.
Speaker 4 (01:04:40):
Forty five before kickoff, we meet and.
Speaker 1 (01:04:43):
Visit and this is the last pregame media opportunity that
he does with the local media in town. So we
heard him talking about explosive plays and what it says
about its offense. Now with regard to the defense, this
was another thing that sark said on Long Worn Weekly
when we recorded that show yesterday evening and you'll be
(01:05:06):
able to hear it tonight at six o'clock, and that
is that he wanted his guys to be very active
and get turnovers. Now, the end of the yang on
that whole deal is not bringing forth so much aggression
that it leads to penalties because they add penalties, and
(01:05:28):
they had an issue with penalties last week, and it
wasn't just on the defense, was on the offense and
even special teams. As I said to Sark and equal
opportunity offender, his teams were his units were offense, defense,
and special teams a week ago. He doesn't want them
to lose their aggressive nature, but he still wants them
to be able to make big plays and force turnovers.
(01:05:50):
And that even goes into what he's looking at when
he recruits players as well, for guys who can really
turn the ball over to the offense.
Speaker 6 (01:06:00):
We say all of it, Danny.
Speaker 7 (01:06:01):
You know, one when you recruit good football players, you
know the stuff we look for on tape. It's it's
easy to see, you know, big, strong, tall, fast, physical
right that that's not that hard to look at on
the tape. But when you try to find those unique
plays on tape, how do they play the.
Speaker 6 (01:06:20):
Ball in the air?
Speaker 7 (01:06:22):
You know, do they do they have those unique punch
outs on tape even in high school, like so many guys,
when it comes to the point of making a tackle,
they just think in their mind, get them on the ground.
The really good players see opportunities to get the ball
and when if they're the second man in or they're
they're coming in from behind and they punch the ball
(01:06:43):
out from behind, or they know they have him squared
up and they can they can punch on the ball
and still wrap tackle.
Speaker 6 (01:06:49):
So we look for some of that stuff. But then
when we get.
Speaker 7 (01:06:52):
Them here, we definitely train it, we drill it, we
work on it, and Coach Nansen has done a great
job of that with those linebackers. But we do it
at all, you know, and Thursday is a big turnover
day for us. We work all of our ball drills,
you know, Coach a Kina's out there and Coach Orfe
throwing balls with all different position groups. We work on
all of our strip sack fumble stuff, We work on
(01:07:13):
all of our punch out work, and so those things
are not by chance, you know. We try to ingrain
in them and the timing of when to do that
and what I That's why I said coming out of
that first game, I didn't feel like we applied those
things in the first game. I thought last week we
applied the drills that we work on and it came
to life for us.
Speaker 6 (01:07:33):
The ball came out.
Speaker 1 (01:07:34):
Yeah, that'll be something that they will continue to strive
to do. He's big on being able to get turnovers,
and remember the long Ones did a great job of
that last year in the turnover department. It wasn't there
in the first game, clearly against Ohio State, even though
the defense was pretty effective and limited the Buckeyes to
two hundred and three yards of total offense. That's it, uh,
(01:07:57):
And the two touchdowns, and one of those touchdowns was
aided by penalties, the two fifteen yard penalties on the drive.
The other one, of course, there was a penalty involved,
but it was mainly that forty yard strike that made
the difference on the second touchdown for Ohio State. But
they couldn't get turnovers, and that was one of the
keys that he wants to see his guys come up
(01:08:17):
with turnovers. Well they did so last week, and it
kind of happened in bunches, remember, because they got turnover
which led the touchdown, turnover which led the touchdown. They
did it three times like that. They later got another
turnover that did not end up in a score. But
turnovers helped set up during that flurry of four touchdowns
(01:08:39):
from late first quarter, too late in the first quarter
to too early in the second quarter, set up by
three turnovers. It's a big part of that as well,
and it helped open the door to the Longhorns cruising
to that thirty eight seven win. But now it's on
the UTEP and getting ready for the UTEP Minors. Up next,
we'll talk some Long WRN football and some high school
football and some other ball as well. Roger Wallace, sports
(01:09:01):
director k x an, my broadcast partner on Long Worn
Football broadcast and who also will be on the call
of tonight's high school game between Hayes and Hendrickson when
we continue right here, I'm thirteen Under the Zone all
right here on the Thursday afternoon updating Astro's Blue Jays.
Kevin Gosman's working on a complete game shutout. He does
(01:09:25):
have a runner at first with one out. Astar's bating
in the top of the ninth and Toronto up six
to nothing, so we'll keep you updated on that. We
had a chance to visit with Babel Offenburg last hour,
and if you missed a great conversation, you can go
back and you check it out on our podcast page
at AM thirteen Under the Zone dot com. And we'll
(01:09:49):
get to some of the other stuff with regard to
the meaning for Babe and the game and all that
kind of stuff, But we wanted to visit with my
broadcast partner, Longhorn, football sports director at k x A N.
And of course we'll be calling the action tonight when
on KBBO, when it's going to be Hayes and Hendrickson
(01:10:12):
over at the field in Fluckerville, Roger Wallace joins me
right now on the hotline. Are are you headed over
to the field yet?
Speaker 8 (01:10:19):
I apologize, I look like I'm in the witness protection program.
I had a light last week and I forgot to
turn it on.
Speaker 4 (01:10:27):
So no, no, no, we're all good.
Speaker 9 (01:10:29):
Well, I've heard the.
Speaker 8 (01:10:30):
Traffic report and that all was something to look forward to,
and I head up thirty five trying to get to
the field.
Speaker 9 (01:10:36):
So yeah, I'll be on my way in a few minutes.
Speaker 1 (01:10:38):
Okay, all right, First, this this matchup, it's interesting. They
both played competitive non district schedules at this point. Hendrickson's
one in one, Hayes's two and oh and they had
that crazy come from behind win against Plugerville last week,
so it's back to back trips for them to the
field off of that. But what's your what's your take
(01:10:59):
on the Hayes team early on that's out to a
two and zero start this season.
Speaker 8 (01:11:05):
It was interesting talking with their their coach, Mark Torres,
because he he kind of set the scene a little
bit different than maybe we thought. He said, you know,
we struggled against Flugerville, we had the big comeback, got
some breaks along the way, whereas you know, Hendrickson cruised
in their shutout win over Leanders.
Speaker 9 (01:11:24):
So he's he said, you know.
Speaker 8 (01:11:25):
They should probably be feeling pretty good, and you know,
I'm not sure how you guys are feeling.
Speaker 9 (01:11:29):
I kind of look at it the other way.
Speaker 8 (01:11:31):
Hey, you guys found a way to win in a
competitive ball game, a close game, fourth quarter game. Whereas
Henderson comes into this one, he wasn't terribly competitive. So
you know, Hayes might be a little more battle tested
coming off a week two. But you know everything changes
now with this being the district opener as well tonight.
Speaker 1 (01:11:50):
Yeah, and it was a tough loss for Henrickson in
the week one the Belton So I mean, like we said,
competitive ball games and that sort of thing. All right,
So here's here's the Here was the hook tall of this,
and we talked about it with Baby Laffenburg about him
losing his son Luke and to cancer back in twenty nineteen,
and it started with Dana Demmel, the head coach, saying,
(01:12:10):
we're not going to retire Luke Laufenberg's jersey number. No,
We're gonna have somebody wear the jersey, kind of almost
like that twelfth Man type thing where somebody wears the
twelfth Man jersey, but somebody will wear the number two
jersey in his honor. And the thing that just absolutely
makes it stand alone from others is whoever wears the
(01:12:32):
jersey wears it with the name Laffenburg on the back
of the jersey, which is absolutely just thunderstruck me when
I read about this and then come to find out,
of course, the kid who's wearing is a red shirt
freshman from El Paso out of Pebble Hills, Marcus Torres,
whose dad happened to be his head coach in a
(01:12:53):
high school at Pebble Hills and now is entering his
second year as head coach of the Hayes Hawks, Mark
and I imagine he's a pretty proud dad about all that.
Speaker 8 (01:13:03):
Yeah, that's a pretty good, pretty cool connection. And honestly,
you and I were talking yesterday. I didn't put it
together until I was working on my Texas UTEP stuff
for our game on Saturday. I spoke with Mark in
the morning on Tuesday and he didn't offer it up.
And then I saw Marcus Torres Pebble Hills. Okay, that's
(01:13:24):
not that's not a coincidence, but yeah, that is. That
is so cool and how cool it is for Mark
in year two as the head coach at Hayes to
have his son come up here and play. And since
they play on Thursday, Saturday is usually a little bit
more open for high school coaches than it would be
on a Friday. So very cool that that he'll, you know,
(01:13:45):
no doubt get to see his son play at Royal
Texas Memorial Stadium on Saturday.
Speaker 1 (01:13:50):
Well, and as you saw Roger, he's not just listed
as a roster dude who was handed a scholarship. He's
he is on the depth chart on the too deep
as a slot receiver. And Babe was telling me that
last Saturday night, and then winter you team Martin Malachai
Nelson tried to throw him a pass later in the
game and he said he just missed him on the target,
(01:14:10):
and Nelson apologized to Taurres and said, hey, I'm sorry
I couldn't get you your first collegiate catch, and Torres's
response was to say, hey, maybe I'll get one in
Austin next week.
Speaker 8 (01:14:21):
So Babe was it was my quarterback at IU back
in the day for one season.
Speaker 1 (01:14:28):
Wow.
Speaker 4 (01:14:29):
Okay, okay, Well.
Speaker 9 (01:14:30):
We were talking connection. I got the Babe Laffenberg connection.
Speaker 4 (01:14:34):
Well, here's the other connection.
Speaker 1 (01:14:35):
I asked him if I said, I said, this is
not intended to make you feel more aged, but I said,
did your career overlap? Because he was talking about Arch
and he said, I'm really looking forward to watching Arch play.
And I said, not to make you feel any older,
but did your career at any way overlap with Arch's grandfather?
(01:14:57):
And he answers yes, by like about a e about
a year Arch in the twilight of his career and
Babe just starting out at his career. So there was
there was a little bit of there was a little
bit of overlap there. Let's talk about this game on
Saturday as well. And what we heard Sark say today
and what he said when we were recording Longhorn Weekly,
(01:15:18):
a lot of the same themes echoing as going in
the last week in that he wants to play a
lot of guys and he wants to see this different
than week one. He really wants to see a lot
of cleanup in the penalty area with the twelve in
fractions for over one hundred yards.
Speaker 9 (01:15:37):
Yeah, I thought it was interesting.
Speaker 8 (01:15:38):
And your guy hard ball Harg will call him leather
Haarge for this question with start today.
Speaker 9 (01:15:44):
But he talked about, you know, keeping things.
Speaker 8 (01:15:48):
Clean and what do you like from the sides of
the ball so far in week three. Now, he was
interesting because he didn't sugarcoat offense needs to clean things up,
They need to be more consistent.
Speaker 9 (01:16:03):
They like the big plays.
Speaker 8 (01:16:04):
Obviously, the defense is e laite, he said, kind of
incomplete on special teams because they haven't had that money opportunities.
Speaker 9 (01:16:10):
The other thing he said is he didn't.
Speaker 8 (01:16:11):
Back down from hey you and nature is you guys
are forty point favorites.
Speaker 9 (01:16:15):
How do you keep him engaged in practice?
Speaker 8 (01:16:17):
And he talked about, you know, the scout team and
how good of a job they did giving this team
good looks and so he doesn't dodge that stuff that
everyone's thinking.
Speaker 9 (01:16:27):
You're in this middle of a three game homestand where
you're gonna be.
Speaker 8 (01:16:30):
A seemingly a heavier favorite than next week from the
previous week, and that'll probably include next week, but I
think they can still get a lot out of it
as well. And I spoke to him for our pregame
show on Saturday on Game Day about Arch, And you know,
Arch did this last year. He did two as the
starter and never did three as the starter. So this
(01:16:50):
is his third game starting, and he just likes the
fact that he's getting a better command of the offense
and more importantly, maybe the leadership aspect and making sure
he includes everybody, uh in getting this offense on track
as well.
Speaker 1 (01:17:03):
Kind of curious to see what he does with the
running backs. I think we're all obviously expecting to see
a pretty good dose of C. J. Baxter as it's
as it's getting up, and then and then obviously he
wants to continue to mix in other guys, and uh,
that would be obviously Christian Clark.
Speaker 4 (01:17:23):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (01:17:23):
He's been he's been very up from what he said
about Jarret Gibson, and I know everybody remembers the fumbles
last year and then the fumble last.
Speaker 4 (01:17:31):
Week and then the other thing.
Speaker 1 (01:17:33):
This is something he said to me last night as well,
and he said it this morning on the Zoom. I
think we're gonna get to see that freshman from Screetport,
James Simon, on the field on Saturday.
Speaker 8 (01:17:43):
Yeah, and uh, and the gibs of things interesting because
he feels terrible for him, but that doesn't change the
way he feels about if you put it on the ground,
that's gonna hurt your chances of being in the rotation.
Now he'll I think he'll get a chance on Saturday.
But yeah, to see one of the freshman. Stewart's a
little bit banged up, he didn't dress last week in
(01:18:05):
their game against San Jose State.
Speaker 9 (01:18:07):
But Simon's a guy that's been getting a lot of
reps in practice.
Speaker 8 (01:18:10):
And I'm interested what Christian Clark does game two, Game one,
you finally get out there, you get a chance.
Speaker 9 (01:18:15):
He busted off a thirteen yard run.
Speaker 8 (01:18:18):
Now we just do we see him a little bit
more free and easy on Saturday as well.
Speaker 9 (01:18:22):
And to me, Craig also the other thing, the tight ends.
Speaker 8 (01:18:25):
I mean, they're just running tight ends out there, deep
into the depth chart and they all look pretty good.
Speaker 4 (01:18:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:18:32):
I was about to get to that and say it's
another thing that's really fascinating. We all heard and knew
about Jack Andreys coming in and he's lived up to
the building so far with what he's done with the
six catches and the two touchdowns. But to see Spencer, Shannon,
Jordan Washington, Nick Townsend all rotating real, I mean we
were keeping the spot or Andy way hopping last Saturday.
(01:18:53):
Everyone have motioning tight ends in out, in out, in out.
That can be nothing but good if you're developing that
depth with guys who obviously they have different ones out
there in different blocking situations, but they've all proven they
can catch the ball as.
Speaker 8 (01:19:07):
Well, and that's that's the part we see him catching,
we go, oh, there's another tight end involved. But sometimes
we don't watch as closely what they're doing in the
run game, like Jeff Banks is doing, Kyle Flood's doing,
and Coach Sark's doing.
Speaker 9 (01:19:20):
So yeah, that separates. Amaro Watson caught.
Speaker 8 (01:19:22):
A ball and I thought one of one of Arch's
better plays when he you know, got out of the
pocket and he had to move around a little bit
and dumped it down to him on the sideline. So yeah,
a lot of different guys are seeing time at tight end,
and and I.
Speaker 9 (01:19:34):
Think we're gonna see more receivers this week.
Speaker 8 (01:19:37):
DeAndre Moore sounds like he's not gonna go still waiting
on emmittt Mosley. So Dylan McCutcheon's gonna get more chances,
Kalick Lockett who made the catch on Saturday, And is
this a time where we see Jamie French maybe make
his debut as well at receiver.
Speaker 4 (01:19:52):
And an Aaron Butler whom was talking to last week.
Speaker 1 (01:19:56):
Yeah, and even Ryan Niblett perhaps in the patterns as well.
Those guys and all of that gets to the next
thing I was gonna ask, and this is special teams.
This kind of slowly emerged, I think, coming out of camp,
and now folks seem to be pretty fascinated with it.
Is that all three of those guys in the kicking game,
(01:20:18):
the place kicker Mason Shipley, the punter and holder Jack
bow Measter, and the snapper Lance Saint Louis, they're all
married guys, and they're all looked at as being old
guys in college football parlance. I guess they are bon
Mester's twenty six. So all of that, but that's another
interesting theme of this football team.
Speaker 9 (01:20:37):
Yeah, well, Stone.
Speaker 8 (01:20:38):
Of course we know him from his days at Regency
in Austin, so he's the young.
Speaker 4 (01:20:43):
Of the he's the puppy of the group.
Speaker 9 (01:20:44):
Yeah, yeah, exactly.
Speaker 8 (01:20:46):
But Bomester had his moment in game one when nas
to do as much last week, and then obviously Shipley
was good to see him bang that forty seven yarder in,
and then you know, Stone continues to kick unreturnable kickoff.
Speaker 9 (01:21:00):
So right now it's pretty good formula.
Speaker 1 (01:21:02):
Visiting with Roger Wallace here for a few more minutes
here on thirteen hundreds, and Roger, let me ask you
with regard to defense, we mentioned Grayson Littleton was probably
the name that leaked off the page after the first game.
Speaker 4 (01:21:15):
I see that.
Speaker 1 (01:21:17):
And then in addition to that, I think the the
two guys who have stood out, and Stark mentioned one
of them yesterday is would be Marod Watson and Colbervard
in the middle of that defensive front. And Hero Canoe
is also hopped in there. And we've seen Travis Shaw
get in their lance, Jackson off the end, Mosulu off
the him. We're seeing a pretty regular rotation of guys,
(01:21:39):
even with Alex January still out.
Speaker 9 (01:21:41):
Yeah, and Watson is a guy that they got him
for a while.
Speaker 8 (01:21:46):
If they can hold on to him, you just one
year at Syracuse, so I think they like the fact
that they can develop him as well. But that was
obviously the question with all the new interior defensive linemen.
I think one time Craig at least one or two snaps.
They had four base edges on their front floor last week,
and I think that's the other part of this defense
are so flexible and in this day and age of
(01:22:08):
the way you play defense, you can put those edge guys.
Ethan Burt can move inside and some of the other
guys can move inside. Trey More can drop down to
a defensive end, so a lot of differents.
Speaker 9 (01:22:18):
The guy that.
Speaker 8 (01:22:19):
Jumped out at me also is t Anthony Smith because
of exactly what you ran. That SoundBite was sark about
and that was the force fumble he made. He made
the tackle, there was no chance that ball carry was
going to get away, and then he ripped the ball
out with some help from Michael taff and so to
Anthony Smith, I think is a lot of people think
he's going to have a breakout year, as well as
(01:22:41):
Jelani McDonald who got the hand on the ball that
Jaln Gilbot was able to get the interception. I think
Colin simm is gonna be fine, but I think everyone
wants to see him make some more plays and make
fewer mistakes.
Speaker 1 (01:22:53):
Yeah, yeah, I think you're right about that, and some
of that goes to the expectation of him. I also
found it interesting, and this is uplifting for folks to
see leannge La foul all over the field against Ohio
State and everything he did, and then the linebacker everybody
was talking about coming out of the game as the
guy you just mentioned ty Anthony Smith, and then through
it all there's Anthony Hill and there still getting his
(01:23:15):
hand in, still punching out a ball, still being a
factor or two forced fumbles early on, even though we've
been talking about Lafol and Smith here these two weeks.
Speaker 8 (01:23:26):
Yeah, I mean this defense they made Ohio State. It
was difficult for Ohio State to move the ball. Obviously,
it was difficult for San Jose State they had won
one drive. But yeah, the defenses I think is going
to be really good and they'll get tested again a
little bit different way with Malachi Nelson on Saturday. But
I mean we're rattling off with a lot of names
(01:23:48):
that have already made plays and we know are going
to make a lot more plays.
Speaker 9 (01:23:52):
We haven't even mentioned Lake Muhammad.
Speaker 8 (01:23:54):
I think he's been off to a really really fast
start as well. At one quarterback, I thought Gilbot would
have a bit year and I still I still think
that he got to pick on on Saturday as well.
But he can come down and he can be a
factor in the run game as well.
Speaker 1 (01:24:07):
Yeah, before I let you go, I want to give
you a chance to tell folks, because you guys are
standing some busz.
Speaker 4 (01:24:12):
We talked a little bit about it last week.
Speaker 1 (01:24:13):
Have the game tonight on kbv O now tomorrow night,
if I'm you correct me? Where if I go off
the rails here that that huge Westlake at a task
to see the game, Folks can watch that streaming on
k XAM plus correct.
Speaker 8 (01:24:27):
Yeah, ANDKSN dot com. You can watch it on Plus.
You can watch it online. Plus is the free app.
And then also, as I mentioned last week, will archive
our Thursday game on kbb O tonight and then that'll
be available on Plus as well. So it's a nice
way to give people another option of watching.
Speaker 1 (01:24:47):
And then and then the the pregame show on Saturday.
I mean, that's that's been extremely big. And I would
imagine on the home games there along Bevo Boulevard, the
guys with the game day show or or even busier
than normal.
Speaker 8 (01:25:03):
Yeah, that's I thought it went really well last week.
Or Noah gross part of that one. Now, Noah's a
little erk tot Jeremy Hills last week because the celebrity
chef brought food to the set a la game day,
except Hill's just grabbed the plate and you just started,
You just started going at it. And if anybody knows Noah,
he's a connoisseur of food, I think I think he
(01:25:24):
was ready to throw down with Jeremy.
Speaker 1 (01:25:26):
You know, uh, my broadcast partner on Long Worn Men's Basketball,
Eddie Orrin refers to Cameron Parker, who's our engineer road
producer as on the All Knife and Fork team, And
I would say that Noah and Levon Whittaker are on
the All Knife and Fork media team.
Speaker 4 (01:25:46):
Would it would that? Would that be accurate?
Speaker 8 (01:25:48):
They know what food is served where at events. Let's
just leave it at.
Speaker 4 (01:25:53):
That, Okay. I love those guys.
Speaker 1 (01:25:57):
Hey save travels up there to Flugerville have a good call.
Speaker 4 (01:26:00):
We'll be watching tonight.
Speaker 9 (01:26:01):
We'll see you Saturday. Thanks Coregt.
Speaker 4 (01:26:03):
You bet all right. That's Roger Wallace.
Speaker 1 (01:26:05):
Okay, Actually great guys, Noah and and lev On as well.
But if the food is out, they're gonna partake, like
like a lot of folks.
Speaker 4 (01:26:15):
You would do it as well if you're over at
press conferences, wouldn't you. Hey what in Rome?
Speaker 3 (01:26:19):
Yeah, how about that game tonight? I got a prediction
for you, let's hear it. I like the Hawks. I
see what you did there. Okay, yeah, it's the computer
says it'll be the Hawks from Hendrickson. The computer likes
Hendrickson by three. But I think this thing could go
to war. They picked a good one. I think they
really picked a good game to have as their kbv
(01:26:43):
O Big Game of the Week. And again, folks can
watch that tonight on kbv.
Speaker 1 (01:26:47):
O and then tomorrow that big non district matchup over
off the northeast side of the Greater Houston area Westlake
at a Taska Sita.
Speaker 4 (01:26:57):
Folks can watch that on either.
Speaker 1 (01:26:59):
The streaming platform k XHM plus you watch that for free,
or you can watch it on KXHAN dot com. So
those options are available to you as well. I love
this where you can see lots of different high school
football games. Our our victory plus telecast tomorrow will be
long View and South Oak Cliff. Now is your broadcast
(01:27:23):
is it just is this streaming audio only or is
there video component.
Speaker 4 (01:27:27):
To you being the new voice of the bass Drop Bears.
Speaker 3 (01:27:29):
Yeah, there'll be a video component as well, and get
broadcast on VIPE and it will feature the bass Drop
Bears and the p c Allons pc A.
Speaker 2 (01:27:38):
Yeah, no one says that.
Speaker 1 (01:27:39):
No, no, no, no, yeah, you could do that for short
it's Pressed Christian Academy.
Speaker 2 (01:27:44):
Yeah, yeah, but you know it's you could shorten big touchdown.
You get to like it.
Speaker 4 (01:27:49):
I like it.
Speaker 2 (01:27:50):
A lot of talent on.
Speaker 4 (01:27:51):
Yeah, it makes sense. All right.
Speaker 1 (01:27:53):
Coming up, we're gonna hear more from Long wrn's head coach,
Steve Sarkisian when we continue on thirteen under the Zone.
Thanks again, Roger Wallace, you joining us here to talk
about the game the night he has that all of Hawks,
Hayes and Hendrickson, and then of course our conversation about
Long Orange football and the course our coverage on Saturday
morning begins with Long Orange Game Day and that comes
(01:28:15):
your way at high noon from the hook, I'm to
hang out there in Windship Circle of there on Beivo Boulevard.
How'd you like your first experience over there on BiVO Boulevard.
Speaker 3 (01:28:27):
It was a lot of fun because you know, you
can see the stadium Stampede go by.
Speaker 4 (01:28:33):
Yep.
Speaker 3 (01:28:33):
And then I think after that ended, a lot of
folks realize where we were kind of our new location.
They could hear the show, and we had a nice
little live audience joining us.
Speaker 1 (01:28:41):
That's good. That's good, and I think they'll be over
there again. Are there any shaded areas over there where
you guys are it's going to be warm Saturday.
Speaker 3 (01:28:51):
Well, I'll tell you there are a lot of tents
around us, and there's also the Big Beertha right behind us,
and that can cast a bit of a shadow. I
haven't been out there at that time of day, so
maybe not so much.
Speaker 2 (01:29:01):
We'll see.
Speaker 1 (01:29:02):
Yeah, yeah, you can cool off certainly there with Big
Beer Saturday. The high actually, the high is only going
to be ninety one on Saturday. Could be worse. Yeah,
had games in September here where it's been a lot
hotter than that, so it could be worse than that
on our text line, I pointed out the Astros lost today.
(01:29:25):
Shut out Kevin Gosman complete game as he went the
distance for the Blue Jays in shutting out the Astros,
and it was it was. It got kind of ugly
toward the end because Toronto was really battering the Houston bullpen.
Speaker 4 (01:29:41):
He ended up winning that game six to nothing.
Speaker 1 (01:29:43):
So the standings now in the American League West, the
Astros lead on the Seattle Mariners is one half of
the game, one half a game, and the Rangers are
two back. Now, the Rangers are traveling today, They're on
the way to New York and playing the Mets, and
some he pointed out on the text line, he said,
Rangers played Mets, two hungry teams. You better believe it.
(01:30:05):
The Rangers surging in the Mets, just trying to hang
in there. They've got a big game tonight, finishing up
a series with the Phillies and just trying to turn
things around. Yankees and Tigers have one more game they
played tonight. The Podres, which just finished dropping two of
three at home to the Reds, host the Rockies, who
just finished being swept by the Dodgers in Los Angeles,
(01:30:28):
and again. Those standings are tightening up now, and that
includes in the wildcard race, where the Rangers are a
game and a half out of that third wildcard spot
held by Seattle. But the Seattle only a half game
out of the American League West lead, so they're in
the think of the fight, and the Rangers are too.
(01:30:48):
In the American League West and in the National League
in the East, the Phillies have taken complete command of that.
In fact, the Phillies have made a big push to
try to catch the Brewers for best overall record in baseball.
The Phillies of late have been beating up on teams,
(01:31:08):
including the Mets. They won three in a row and
they won seven of the last ten. Meanwhile, the Mets
have dropped five in a row and they've dropped seven
of their last ten.
Speaker 3 (01:31:17):
Really scuffling offensively, Craig, they just have not found a
lot of timely hits.
Speaker 1 (01:31:22):
Of the last week, they're ten backs, so they're out
of the division race pretty much and then just clinging
to that third wild card spot.
Speaker 3 (01:31:30):
Right now, Here come the Reds, here come the Giants.
Speaker 1 (01:31:33):
These two teams really making a push, and even the
Cubs are trying to play their way in the striking
distance of the Brewers. They're five and a half back
in the central. Now the time is running out, you're
down to fifteen to sixteen games left in the season,
but they're they're trying to do that, so we'll continue
to watch those division races. Let's hear a little more
(01:31:53):
from Long Worn's head coach Steve Sarkisian and when he
when he was talking about getting guys who forced turnovers,
he was answering Danny Davis's question. That's why you heard
him say, I think all of it, Danny. He was
talking about what they're looking for when they're trying to
recruit guys who can turn into real playmakers, you know,
(01:32:18):
just real turnover hunting machines for them. Now on the
offensive side, he's always looking for playmakers. Emmett mostly, it's
one of those guys. Unfortunately we haven't been able to
see him at play as he's been overcoming an injury.
But sark nevertheless was asked what drew him to recruiting
(01:32:38):
a guy like Emmitt Mosley, who had already entered the
Portal from Stanford and was looking to move elsewhere.
Speaker 7 (01:32:44):
I thought, one, you know, here's a guy who as
a freshman, I think played nine games for Stanford last
year and I think had forty nine catches, and so
he was really efficient for a guy that didn't play
twelve thirteen games, you know, is very efficient and productive.
He's got really good size, he's an excellent blocker, and
he's got excellent hands. I like the fact that Stanford
(01:33:07):
that he played in the slot and outside. We were
looking for a versatile player that way that can really
do it all. And so when you think about it,
he's got size, he's smart, he's a really good blocker.
He's caught a lot of passes, and so I think
he's just going to be a nice mix for us,
a guy who's not a one dimensional player that's really
going to fit into our style of offense.
Speaker 4 (01:33:28):
All right. So there it is from Sark.
Speaker 1 (01:33:30):
We'll hear some more from sart from this availability tomorrow
and tomorrow's show.
Speaker 4 (01:33:34):
We're in a pretty busy show.
Speaker 1 (01:33:36):
Tomorrow we'll have a conversation with the head coach of
the UTEP minor, Scottie Walden. He is on the practice
field right now and he's and they'll be traveling tomorrow.
So he agreed to do an interview with us after
practice today, so we'll record that interview after we get
off the air later this afternoon, and we'll have that
(01:33:57):
for you tomorrow on the program. Also on Fridays is
when we usually visit with Gene Watson to talk Major
League Baseball, and we will we'll do that as well,
so Gina will be with us tomorrow.
Speaker 4 (01:34:11):
We'll do that, we'll hear more from Sark.
Speaker 1 (01:34:14):
We'll also hear an excerpt from Longhorn Weekly with Coach Sark,
which airs tonight at six o'clock here on the Zone,
and we'll hear the segment of the program tomorrow Tomorrow
afternoon on the show.
Speaker 4 (01:34:32):
You'll hear the obviously all of.
Speaker 1 (01:34:34):
The program tonight, but tomorrow the segment of the program
that where we look at the opponent every week and
we'll have his conversations. It's very entertaining show tonight. It's interesting.
The member of the staff who joins us is Jamal Fenner.
Coach Fenner. Of course, people know in these parts. You
(01:34:56):
know what a great job he did in his five
seasons as the head coach at LBJA, hitting him to
the state semifinals in twenty twenty, getting into the state
championship round in twenty twenty one.
Speaker 4 (01:35:04):
Those of us ogs.
Speaker 1 (01:35:06):
Remember when Jamal Finner was actually a cornerback playing for
Reagan High School at the start of the millennium, when
he played for the late Andrew Jackson. I called a
state quarterfinal game in the Alamodome between Bastrop and Reagan
in two thousand and one and Jamal was the starting dB.
Speaker 2 (01:35:29):
This is good lore for my broadcast.
Speaker 1 (01:35:31):
Yeah, and Reagan won the game and they went to
the final four that year two thousand and one and
the semifinals lost in the semifinals. And Jamal played at
Reagan which is now Northeast Early College. Back then it
was known as Reagan, but Jamal also played at UTEP.
He is still UTEP's all time leader.
Speaker 4 (01:35:55):
I believe in total.
Speaker 1 (01:35:56):
Punt returns and maybe return yard or yards per return.
He's he's up there pretty high in those categories. And
he's the all time leading punt returner in terms of
total punt returns in UTEP history.
Speaker 3 (01:36:10):
Wow, not to get too off track, I love analytics.
They have ruined the great punt returners. I mean, you
see they don't You don't kick to him anymore, That's right.
Numbers have caught up to that, so.
Speaker 4 (01:36:20):
It probably helps a guy like Jamal and Hen hold
on to his record.
Speaker 2 (01:36:22):
Yes, it might stand up for a while.
Speaker 1 (01:36:24):
As the chance to do that. So we visited with
Jamal Fenner tomorrow. He is by the way there. He
was hired by sark three years ago to be their
director of high school Relations, but they've added the player
developed director of player Development title to that, so he's
he's pretty busy on it. When Kevin Washington left, they
added that title for Jamal, so he's the director Player
(01:36:48):
Development and high school Relations for Texas. So I have
that conversation also Roderick Wright, rod right, big middle of
that offensive front on that two thousand and five National
championship team. Rod Wright is going into the University of
Texas Athletics Hall of Honor tomorrow night, the dinner tomorrow night,
(01:37:09):
and rod Wright will join us. It's funny everybody points
to that one, and sark asked him.
Speaker 4 (01:37:16):
I didn't ask him, but.
Speaker 1 (01:37:18):
Sarka asked rod Right, if there's one play other than
of course, you know, winning the national championship, if there's
one individual moment.
Speaker 4 (01:37:27):
For you, what would it be?
Speaker 1 (01:37:29):
And I knew what it was for me, and apparently
Sark had it h mine and Rod Wright said it
as well, was the obvious one, the big scoop and score.
Speaker 4 (01:37:38):
He had to believe.
Speaker 1 (01:37:39):
It was sixty seven yards, big, big run back for
a touchdown against Oklahoma that year in the forty five
to twelve win. And as I pointed out, the great
thing about that is he scoops it up and he's
running toward the south end zone and all the replay
cameras show him running straight at the camera and he's
just running and huffing him puff and as he got there.
Speaker 4 (01:38:00):
But he made it all the way in.
Speaker 1 (01:38:01):
It was a big, big moment in the Longhorn's winner
for the Sooners that year, and it ended a five
game losing streak to Oklahoma. So it was a pretty
cool see. So that's coming your way on Longhorn Weekly
at six o'clock. We'll be back to wrap up today's
edition of the program on thirteen under the Zone
