Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, we are now nine days away from the kickoff
of the Texas Long Horn football season, nine days away,
nine days away from the vast majority of the teams
in the state or in college football across the nation

(00:22):
kicking off their seasons. There are, however, four games this
weekend involving Division one FBS programs that will be played
this coming Saturday, as in two days from the day
zero week. You know, I like to think that college
football had to borrow that from the UIL terminology because

(00:44):
they were calling it zero week years ago. UIL now
is just week one of eleven regular season weeks to
play ten games.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
It's just known because the vast.

Speaker 1 (00:57):
Majority of high school football program do begin their seasons
on Week one, which will be next weekend. By the way,
when it first started, when zero week was introduced as
an option, I think the first year, about only one
fifth of the schools played it, and then there was

(01:19):
a slide increase maybe about a fourth or between a
fourth and the third the second year, and then it
just caught all a wildfire.

Speaker 2 (01:26):
Now the vast majority of high school.

Speaker 1 (01:29):
Football programs begin on that first week, and so to
the point that it's no longer known as zero week.
It's week one because it goes all the way straight through.
I did think it was kind of weird that they
call this particular week zero week, you know, I guess
because it's an optional week whatever for some programs that
are doing it.

Speaker 2 (01:49):
To take the buy a little bit later on.

Speaker 1 (01:52):
Because everybody's thinking of that first huge weekend of college
football being next weekend, and it is. It is, but
it's not every program in the state of Texas begins
next next weekend. Tarleton State is an FCS program, and
they're playing McNeese State at FCS program.

Speaker 2 (02:13):
That's that is this Saturday.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
But more to the point, SMU, who makes its debut
as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference, playing this
Saturday at Nevada. And then, of course the highest profile matchup,
tenth rank Florida State playing Georgia Tech, an ACC Conference game,
mind you, in Dublin, Ireland, and Hawaii at home against

(02:39):
Delaware State. We didn't hear any other bad things about
Delaware State's travel to.

Speaker 2 (02:44):
The Hawaiian Islands, did we come.

Speaker 1 (02:46):
I mean, the Hornets, as best we can tell, did
arrive safely in Honolulu to begin their on site preparations
for Saturday's Saturday Nights game against the Rainbow Warriors, Isn't
that correct?

Speaker 3 (03:00):
Last thing we heard was that they were able to
get on their flight yesterday, but instead of a drag
flight from JFK Honolulu, had to have three connections just
to get there. So I'm assuming they have landed. We
have not heard anything else. Have got any other stories
saying there was any more issues trying to lend the

(03:20):
Honolulu but the last thing we heard was from their
spokeswoman that they were headed to Honolulu. Finally, after that
stat foo that caused him to miss their original flight.

Speaker 1 (03:33):
One other college football note this came down today, According
to sources who were confirming this to ESPN, the most
the longest tenured coach in FBS football, Kirk Farrens at Iowa,
along with assistant John Budmar, are going to be suspended

(03:55):
one game for a violation related to the recruitment of transfer.
What about Kay McNamara, the former Michigan Wolverines. It's related
to an investigation that's been going on now. Ference was
scheduled to speak with reporters this afternoon to wrap up
preseason training camp, so we'll see if that's the Athletic

(04:16):
was the first one to report these suspensions.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
Now.

Speaker 1 (04:19):
McNamara committed to Iowa December first, to twenty twenty two,
just three days after entering the portal. Was a grad transfer,
of course, he started for Michigan twenty twenty one when
the team reached the Big Ten in the playoff, and
then suffered a season ending leg injuring the third game.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
Of the twenty twenty two season.

Speaker 1 (04:36):
He's battled injuries throughout his time in Iowa, but did
open twenty twenty three as the Hawkeye starter. Although Farence
announced in July that McNamara was the starter. McNamara Northwestern
transfer Brandon Sullivan had been competing for the job in camp.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
But that's where it is. We'll see if that is
indeed the case.

Speaker 1 (04:55):
All right, Up next, we'll talk some high school football
as well as some college football. Greg tap For, managing
editor of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, joins us for
our weekly conversation when we continue from Houston on Sports
Radio AM thirteen under the Zone in the iHeartRadio app.
