Speaker 1 (00:00):
Here we go on to Fire me Up Friday on
the Craig Way Show on thirteen hundred The Zone and
on the free iHeart Radio app. Good afternoon everyone, Thanks
for joining us here. Glad to have you with us
here on this fire me Up Friday, September fifth. It
(00:21):
is Football Week, Week two of the college football season,
the NFL season officially underway as of last night, and
in less than twenty four hours it'll be Texas game Day.
So super pumped for that, super pumped the have you
with us here? I'm Cameron Parker, filling in for Creig
(00:41):
Way here on today's program. No worries Craig will be
back tomorrow for Texas football. Not many things we'll take
Craig away from Texas football, but he's out today, so
I am with you for today's program. Of course, Jay Kerman,
our producer, is with us here on this Friday afternoon.
Good afternoon, Jake, how are you doing? You excited for?
(01:03):
I believe this is your first Texas home game in
what three three four years? As of tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (01:09):
I don't need to fire up Friday to be fired
up for tomorrow's game.
Speaker 1 (01:12):
That's going to be great.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
Also, love the way you started the show today, little
Dak Prescott tip of the cap with the here we go.
Speaker 1 (01:17):
Oh yeah, oh yeah, always thanks to way to hear
you go. Well, we will definitely talk Dallas Cowboys here
on today's show. It's what the people want. The Cowboys
falling to Philadelphia last night. Are you surprised? I don't
think so, at least I'm not surprised. Hopefully you're not surprised.
We'll talk about that. We'll talk about spitgate as they
(01:40):
are calling it, and if last night maybe changed your
expectations for the Cowboys for the Eagles, we'll get into
that as well. Of course, we will talk Texas football.
Long Corns opening up their home schedule tomorrow against San
Jose State. The Spartans come in zero to one after
following the Central Michigan last week sixteen of fourteen. It'll
(02:01):
be arch Manning's first home start as the designated starting quarterback.
Of course, he started two games last season in lieu
of quinn Ewers, who was dealing with that oblique injury.
Went to we know as a starter, played very well,
but this time it'll take the reins as the designated
starting quarterback tomorrow and looking for a huge bounce back
(02:24):
game for arch Manning, who had his up and downs,
his ups and downs against the Wilo State, as has
been widely documented throughout the league. I don't know about you, Jake.
The farther get away from that game, the better I
feel about arch Manning, especially when there's a lot of
you know, former players in the media and Danny Knell,
(02:44):
Joe Klatt, former quarterbacks, and when a lot of those
guys talk about how difficult it is to make your
first road start. Because although you know, we have seen
arch Manning, you know, we saw him two years ago
against Texas Tech, he came in, We saw him, you know,
against you know, got a couple of reps against Georgia
in a and m in you know, garbage time the
two starts, but had never played an environment like that,
(03:04):
one hundred thousand fans screaming and bloody murder at you,
all the hype, all the speculation, the entire offseason, a
lot of pressure on arch Manning's shoulders. I mean, he
hasn't even you know, before even week one, he's being
asked about if he's gonna declare for the NFL Draft.
So I think a learning lesson for our guy, arch
(03:26):
Manning a lot to look forward to, and I'm looking
forward to seeing how he plays tomorrow, but also these
next three weeks because the next three weeks will be
a good indicator of where he's at mentally and also physically.
After a tough loss to Ohio State in a game
that Texas could have won, so look at tomorrow's game.
Will visit with CJ. Vocal from on Texas Football Hill
(03:47):
Joints at the three o'clock hour get his thoughts on
this matchup on the Texas team. It's a game also
that we're going to see a lot of faces we
did not see last week. It's an opportunity, as Steve
Sarkisian has talked about at length this week, a chance
for them to play some of the younger guys. Texas
kept it pretty tight in terms of their rotation against
o wiow State. I think only two running backs were
(04:09):
really used, Trey Wise or CJ. Baxster. It's a pretty
deep running back room. We saw Daylan McCutcheon, but we
did not see a lot of the incoming freshman wideouts,
including Jamie French, Michael Terry. We see those guys, Click
Lockett Aaron Butler. Aaron Butler, it's a deep wide receiver room.
(04:30):
So when we see him at Mosley back from Stanford,
the transfer Stanford who was not healthy against Ohio State,
we'll see if he gets to the play, We'll talk
to cfogal about his status and also defensively. You know
a lot of guys that a lot of people are
excited to watch play and see what he can do
in the football fields. Johnal Williams, the two sport athlete
who was nicked up coming into fall camp. Of course,
(04:51):
you know he spent spring ball with the baseball team
as they won the SEC Conference in their first year
in the SEC under coach Schlaanschnaegels, so later arriving to
the football practice and then the course. I believe he
was dinged up through fall camp, so an opportunity possibly
for Jonah Williams among a lot of other guys. On
(05:11):
Saturday as well, Craig Waite did preview San Jose State
with Steve Sarkishan on Longhorn Weekly with Coach sark that
aired last night, actually aired six to seven pm on
thirteen hundred Zone and if you missed it, it will
also re air again tonight same time, six pm on
thirteen hundred The Zone and The Free. Iheartradil app. We're
(05:32):
going to play you an excerpt from that show on
today's program later on, but a good show. Jeff Banks,
the tight Ends and Special Teams coordinator, was on a
fantastic chat between Craig him and coach Sark and then
Colt McCoy speaking of Arch Mandy. Colt is always a
fantastic guest. He joined from his office I think in
Fort Worth as he's got into the real estate side
(05:55):
of business now. So congrats to Colton. His brother Case
also here in the Austin area, did the same thing,
but Colt joined and you probably have heard all the comparisons,
but you remember, you know Colt's true really you know,
first tough start game against Ohio State and I think
it was a twenty seven, twenty one to seven loss
at DKR, And yet you know people can say, like,
(06:16):
well it was at home in Ohio. Stay at Troy
Smith who won the heighst from that year and this
and that, but still kind of similar, right, you know,
a lot of expectations on Colt McCoy going into that game.
Same for Arch manning a lot of similarities and Colt
McCoy talked about that and I thought had some fantastic responses.
So you can listen to that tonight six pm on
(06:36):
thirteen hundred Zone Longhorn Weekly with coach Socker' also going
to play you a few interviews. I sat down with
Jack Boumeister bow Meister rather the Texas punter transfer from
Utah out of Bendigo, Victoria, Australia, sat down with him,
and also CJ Baxer will play those interviews. CJ, of
(06:57):
course will be making his return to d and it's
been six hundred and fifty two days since he last
took a snap. A meaningful snap in DKR came against
Texas Tech two years ago. Of course, he had the
season ending torn ACL and LCL injury in fall camp
of last year, missed the entire season, played well against
(07:19):
Ohio State, and he is super excited to be able
to take the field tomorrow at DKR and you'll hear
how much it means to him as well. Also, Steve
Starkejan did visit with the media on Wednesday. We will
bring you that interview as well. So all things are
all super excited for what today's show will bring you
(07:39):
also tomorrow's schedule. By the way, for those of you
who are listening, how we can listen to Texas football
and all of the pregame and postgame content. So remember,
especially this season, we're now bringing you the third in
Longhorn Podcast both pregame and postgames. So the preview show tomorrow,
which I believe was taped with hosts Nick Schuley, Jeremy Hills,
(08:00):
Derek Johnson, Alex okafor Fozzy Whitaker Rod Babers on the
program that will air tomorrow at seven thirty AM. What
a Pan seven thirty No kidding. Seven thirty to eight
am will be the third and Longhorn Gang previewing Texas
and San Jose Say that'll be on thirteen hundred Zone.
(08:21):
Then at eight o'clock Longhorn's Game Day Live from Bevo Boulevard.
Super excited to be back out there, Mike Carge, myself
and Mark Henry back from Europe where he's been for
what feels like the entire year. We'll be making our
return to BiVO Boulevard the two hour pregame show and
(08:42):
if you're gonna be at the game, you want to
come out listen to the show, say what's up. We
are at the front of the win Ships Circle. Yeah, okay,
I know probably no one knows what that means. Okay,
So if you're on Bevo Boulevard, which is San Jack,
and you walk all the way north to the four
way stop sign, you have four intersects between San Jack
(09:03):
and the Lost Dons Way to the left. They call
it hook Them hang Out or the Winship Circle. It's
where believe Big Bertha is at, all the food trucks
are at, and that's where our broadcast setup will be.
So come out, say what's up. We got a really
fun We've got a real fun show plan for you,
because at eight o'clock we we take care. We're gonna
(09:23):
have Nick Schuley and Jeremy Hills join us. We're gonna
basically Craig Way and Roger Wallace from the booth of
dickr On War Richardson from Orangebloods dot Com will stop
buy and we're gonna get you Mike Mark, Henry's hype train,
hargest keys of the game, all of them. All that
to preview Texas and San Jose State. So come out
and say what's up to us? Network here time begins
(09:44):
at ten am. It'll be broadcasted on nine to eight
one Cavett and also one of three one Austin's eighty station,
so you can listen to it on those two stations
are also on the free iHeartRadio app. The Round Rock
Express are playing tomorrow at noon and so that'll be
on thirteen hundred the Zone. So if you turn the
thirteen hundred the Zone, you don't hear the game, you
(10:04):
will hear Rolan Kobri and the Express playing heads up.
So tune in the ninety eight one Cavett and also
one on three one Austin's eighty station, and then postgame
following the network postgame show on thirteen hundred will be
the third and Longhorn postgame show. So Nick Schuley, he's
got a handful of former Texas players. I think last
week he had Aaron Williams on the set and two
(10:29):
other gentlemen as well. It was a really good postgame show.
I think Jeremy Hills may joined them as well. So
tune into that. It takes air roughly probably about four o'clock.
That's when it took care of last week, So tune
into that. It will also be streaming live on our Facebook,
Twitter and YouTube pages. So we're looking forward to it,
(10:51):
looking forward to they show as well as we're just
getting started here. If you want to join the program,
text to where Texas to eight one five three zero,
followed by your mess Get your thoughts on Texas, San
Jose State, get your thoughts on the Dallas Cowboys, because
up next we are talking Dallas Cowboys. And I'm telling
you Ray, that feeling that you had at the end
(11:13):
of the game, forget about that, hope drop it. I'll
tell you why. Up next here on thirteen hundred The Zone,
Find me Up Friday. Here on thirteen hundred The Zone,
Cameron Parker with you filling in for Craig Way on
this Friday, Fleetwood Mac. You make love and fun coming
(11:36):
back from the break and today usually Fridays Fire me
Up Friday. But Jay Kerman, our producer here choosing the
return cuts, and he mentioned he was going to go
with a San Jose State theme today and I believe
the tie in between the Spartans in Fleetwood Mac is
one of the band members is an alumni from San
(11:58):
Jose State University. Exactly right.
Speaker 2 (12:01):
Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham at San Jose State University.
So it is where their sort of love story started.
And that's why we came back with you Make Love
and Fun from Fleetwood Mac.
Speaker 1 (12:12):
And I believe that song written by Stevie Nicks, came
after the breakup with Lindsay Buckingham, and the song is
about Stevie's next lover after Lindsay Buckingham, which is wild
because they were still together as a part of Fleetwood Mac.
(12:33):
And so she recorded the song and only not only
made it about her next lover, but also made Lindsay
Buckingham play it every time, and of course it turned
into a massive fit. I don't know if they ended
up getting I think they got back together after that.
I'm not sure. I might need Craig to discuss that.
But Fleetwood Mac coming back here on Fire Me Up Friday.
(12:57):
All right, let's talk Dallas Cowboys Thursday night football. I
like the Cowboys have always opened the season, you know,
it used to be the New York Giants and Eli
Manning and putting the dagger into the heart of Tony
Romo to begin the season. There was a span there.
I think Dak Prescott really turned the tie, and there
(13:18):
was a couple of Thursday Night victories to start the season.
But then last night the NFL decided, let's put the
Cowboys and Eagles on the start the season. And I
think in terms of, of course, the Eagles defending Super
Bowl champions, I think they could have chose a better
team than the Cowboys, but of course all eyes would
be on America's team, especially after the Micaeh Parsons trade.
(13:40):
And personally, I went in last night thinking, man, Philly
is going to destroying Dallas. The line was eight and
a half. I was texting friends like, take the Eagles
if you partake in that, I mean, I don't see
how Dallas will be able to stop Jill and Hurt
or Saque Barkley. And then you know, you get closer
(14:03):
to the game time, and I had it pulled up
on my phone. I was out at Bible Stadium doing
a little high school football, had it pulled up the
side and I had some Cowboy friends that I was
talking to who refused to watch the game, had no
interest in watching the game. And if you are a
Cowboys fanom were watching, credit to you because it's been
a very tough offseason, A very tough couple of weeks
(14:25):
for the Cowboys. But even if you had sworn off
the Cowboys, you know all this built up anger towards
Jerry Jones and how they handled the Micah Parsons trade
and the contract and dealing him to your rifle, the
Green Bay Packers who have caused so much heartbreak to
the Cowboys just the past decade alone. The game starts,
(14:46):
and you know, you see Dak Prescott and stuff, and
you know, I like that a lot. He's a great
human being. He's been through a lot. It's been a
great Quarterback's been a great find by will McClay in
the Cowboys front office. And the game starts, and then
what happened. Dallas goes right down the field, Traffontae Williams
looking pretty good. I was asked to think on Monday
(15:08):
who the Cowboys starting running back is. I had no idea,
but Traffonte Williams, Dax completing the George Pickens uh oh
ceedee Lambs are the one yard line and Dallas punches
it in seven to nothing. I know you Cowboys fans
felt something right, maybe even if you were rooting for
Philadelphia the beginning of the game, you felt a little hope,
(15:28):
you know, Okay, this offense might have something schottenheim Er, Okay,
I'm feeling pretty good about this. And then you get
to the defensive side of the field and the Eagles
just go right down the field. Ten plays, seventy yards
six minutes. I don't know why. I don't know. Did
Matt Eberflush just never play the Eagles when he was
(15:50):
the head coach, because maybe put a spy on Jalen Hurts,
who would finish the game with sixty two rushing yards
more than Saque two rushing touchdowns, about four yards per carry.
It felt like the first two Eagles drives, it was
just Hurts just making plays with his legs. Bill Barnwell
(16:12):
had a good tweet. I believe Gillen Hurts in the
first half dropping back when the Cowboys were not blitzing,
he was let's see, I believe he was six for six.
He was perfect in the first half. He had two
pressures on eleven drop backs. In the first half. Hurts
was six for six thirty one yards. Also five runs
(16:36):
for forty three yards in two touchdowns. You know who
would have helped, maybe pressure. I don't say it because
Cowboy fans already know. But seven to seven second drive
out Cowboys again, right down the field, nine plays, eighty
eight yards, six minutes. And the impressive thing was is
that not only the cow was able to move the football,
(17:00):
but they were able to run the ball right down
Philly's throat. And yes, was that because Jayalen Carter was
not playing. Probably Carter, of course he checked on what
the second play of the game for spitting in the
DAK Prescott's face was immediately ejected and forcing Jordan Davis
(17:21):
and Moro Ojimo former Longhorn to play. Believe ninety percent
of the snaps on defense for Philadelphia, ridiculous amount, but
they had to step up with with Jaalen Carter not
out there to plug up the middle, and it showed
Dallas was able to run the football. They would score
on their first four drives on offense to start the
(17:42):
game with trail Philadelphia twenty one to twenty at halftime,
Philadelphia out of halftime. Who would not know to be
who would Dallas had not been able to stop at all,
Cells for a fuel goal and Dallas gets the ball
back and just like the first four drives, they're driving
down the field and you know, again, I'm telling you
(18:03):
I have not been too invested in the Cowboys training camp.
But you know, in twenty four is getting the ball
for Dallas. I was, okay, it's not Jayden Blue. Oh,
Miles Sanders plays for this team, and you can kind
of tell Miles Seners might be past his prime. There
was there was a good run he had on the
left side of the field where I believe he took
off for forty nine yards. He was he was tackled
(18:24):
by Sackbond, the linebacker. He got caught from behind by
a linebacker. That was a little bit alarming that. Okay,
you know what, you know, I'm sure he's a great guy,
but you're here that we're winning football games. And as
a running back, I mean, if Saquan hits that hole,
forget about it. I think I think Jayden Blue is
(18:45):
housing that. Oh well, Jayden Blue, you know, he's what
four four two four three forty speeds, so he wouldn't
he would have. Zack Bond would have been on a
different football field by that time Blue got to the
end zone. And then you know, a few plays later
Cowboys in the red zone. Sanders ends up fumbling and
that was the last time Dallas got near the end zone.
(19:06):
Philadelphia ends up taking over. That's when the weather delay hit.
And there were two things out of the water of
the lay, two great moments. First off, Driko Colin Jillen
hurts Dak Prescott, which got picked up a lot, and
you know, I feel bad for Trico. Even the best
long delay, you know, it's it was what after midnight
Eastern time, maybe closer to midnight when when they resumed play?
(19:31):
Where when the game resumed between Dallas in Philadelphia. So yeah,
even the heavens the best of us. The second thing,
it was first down and I wish I had found
the audio for this for us to play. But Chris
collins Worth with just he's in, He's in mid season four.
Philly has the ball, They're leading twenty four to twenty,
and he tells he says to Mike that if the
(19:54):
Cowboys can win this game, this could be a franchise
altering loss for Philadelphia. It's a bit I had the ball,
Oh it was. I had to play it back because
I couldn't believe what he said. I must have flipped
over to KBVO for a second during that what a
statement from Chris Collinsworth. I do not think if Philadelphia
had lost this game it would be a franchise altering loss.
(20:17):
I mean, considering you didn't have Jillen Carter. They were
losing guys left and right in this game. I think
at one point, you know, they were down what one
defensive back. You're starting two rookies, by the way, including
Andrew mccoobaugh, who had a couple of big plays in
this game. Losing offensive linemen, it would not have been
a franchise altering loss for the Philadelphia. For the Cowboys
(20:39):
maybe because the offense really just stalled out. I mean,
nobody scored any points in the second half. So credit
Dallas's defense for responding after a tough first half in
which Philadelphia was able to run the football one hundred
and fifty eight total rushing yard. Turts only threw for
one fifty two, but the Cowboys inability to get to
(20:59):
her and then the worst part of it, well, there's
two things. We'll get to ceed lamb in a second here,
because I know that's been a very hot topic. But
for me, after Dallas had stopped Philadelphia and in the
final drive for Philadelphia, when it was third and three,
And at this point game is over because even on
third and three, if Hurts wasn't incompletion, it's fourth down
in three. Phillies going for it. Whether it's the Toush
(21:22):
push or just Saquon, they probably get it. But third
down and three, Hurts goes to empty set, and I
think everyone knows what's going to happen. He did it
the entire first half. He was going to run and
pick up the first down. But you're hoping is there
a spy on Jillen Hurts, And somehow, on the biggest
(21:44):
play of the game for Dallas, they do not spy
Jaalen Hurts. And what happens Cowboys with just terrible brush
Land integrity and Hurts able to step up and gets
the first down with his legs. It's the most frustrating
part of that game last night, along with Ceedee Lamb.
But to know I'm third down and three, You're not
(22:05):
going to spy Jillan Hurts. When Hurts got to the
got to the out of the huddle, empty gun, he
recognizes probably immediately, the Cowboys are not going to spy him.
He's not gonna throw the ball. There was never any
moment where Jillen Hursts was gonna throw the football. He
was going to run for it. On third and three,
gets the first down, and that's curtain. Ceed Lamb thirty
(22:28):
four million dollars a year average annual salary. That is
third highest in the league, behind Jamar Chase and Justin Jefferson,
about a million more than DK Metcalf and Garrett Wilson.
Had four drops last night. Now, the last one wasn't
(22:51):
as bad as the first three. But I thought Dak
Prescott was phenomenal. I don't think his stats back up
how well. He played one hundred and eight yards. His
QBR was fifty eight, quarterback writing was seventy six. But
I thought he came out firing, he was aggressive, and
the throws he made the CD Lamb all four, I
(23:13):
thought were just perfect throws. And for your number one
receiver to not come down with any of those, I mean,
those are game Those are game changing plays because at
least one of those catches gets you in field gold
range and it probably changes the outcome of the game
for the Dallas Cowboys. But the last one of CD
(23:35):
Lamb down the sideline, it's a tough play to make
and I think Collins Worre did a good job. He
described it as he said, it's you know, it was catchable.
It wasn't the easiest catch in the world, but it
was catchable. And the fact that it followed off after
those three drops earlier, the one the drop before that,
when when Dak under pressure just launching it like forty
yards down the field and it hit Lamb right in
(23:58):
the hands dropped it, the one four on the third down,
the crossing route hit him in the hands dropped it.
You need your number one receiver to make that catch.
And you know, the game ends. Philadelphia wins, and I
think Philadelphia is probably the better team, but the game ends,
and I think for Cowboy fans, you're thinking, at the
(24:20):
end of it, you're all rooting for Dallas to win. Right,
even if you're so fed up with Jerry Jones in
the Cowboys organization, you still hate Philadelphia more. Right. You're
sick of Jaalen Hurts, and you're sick of seeing Nick Sirianni,
and you're sick of the toush Bush. You're sick of
seeing Radley Cooper probably in the box every five seconds.
(24:43):
You're hold onto the hope that Dallas can win that game.
But guess what, it's the same Dallas Cowboys team every
single year that loses games like that every single year,
no matter what, no matter if Brian Chottenheimer, Mike McCarthy,
Jason Garrett, we all saw that loss coming a mile away.
Even though Dallas scored in the first four drives of
(25:04):
the game, even though they were stopping Philadelphia, even though
they didn't give up a single point in the second
half of the Eagles, you still knew the Cowboys were
going to find a way the Cowboy and lose that game.
Don't let this, don't let that game get your expectations up,
because guess what, there is no pass rush with Michaeh Parsons.
(25:28):
Dallas maybe still loses that game anyway, but there is
no pass rush there. There's too many holes in this defense.
And offensively, you got thirty four million dollars a year
going to Cede Lamb, who had four critical drops. That
thirty four million dollars. That's a big reason why Michah
Parsons isn't on the Cowboys because Jerry Jones in the
front office caved in the Cede Lamb and Dak Prescott.
(25:53):
They did not negotiate well, they did not use incentives.
They put themselves in this hole. So once again I
always falling to Philadelphia twenty four to twenty a game
they probably could have won. But guess what, we have
all heard that story before. Up next, Inconceivable on a
Florida Man Friday, our two of the day's program Here
on The Craigway Show and Fire Me Up Friday Cameron
(26:15):
Parker alongside Jake Herman and I'm always fired up when
we get to visit with our next guest from on
Texas Football, CJ Fogle. Follow him on Twitter at CJ
Fogel Underscore O Tah, what's up man? How you doing?
How is the trip to Columbus, Ohio? And I'm glad
you made it back safely? No black guys, nothing like that.
Speaker 3 (26:37):
No, it was actually, uh well, first, it was a
very fun trip. You know, it was nice to get
a break from the hot weather down here. But uh now,
I thought it was a pretty tame weekend from the
Buckeye fans I came across so all together. You know,
I was expecting more of those Philadelphia Eagle type college fans.
Speaker 4 (26:53):
Maybe I was just in the wrong areas well.
Speaker 1 (26:55):
I mean when when they lead from for most of
the game, it's probably a little bit easier than when
when you're trailing or when Finch Young a Lama suite
ripped your heart out.
Speaker 5 (27:02):
You know.
Speaker 1 (27:03):
I asked Anthony Hill on Monday, I was like, Big
House or the Horseshoe, And he said horseshoe. He said
he could not hear anything on the field. But what
was your what was your relation to that? How would
you compare it to the Big House? Of course, you
know Texas scored pretty early in that game. The quiet,
the crowd. But big House or a horseshoe for you?
Because were you at the Big House last year?
Speaker 6 (27:22):
Right?
Speaker 1 (27:23):
I believe we visited with you outside the Big House
last year?
Speaker 3 (27:26):
Yeah, yeah, I made both trips and look both are
you know some of the best stadiums you'll find in
all the college football I'll tell you what. Loudness, you know,
stadium atmosphere all goes towards the Buckeyes campus environment.
Speaker 4 (27:41):
You know, the campus itself all goes to Michigan.
Speaker 3 (27:44):
Now, what makes a difference in terms of playing an
actual football game? I argue, you know, the stadium and
impact and the noise factor that goes to whole house day.
Speaker 4 (27:52):
I'll tell you what you know. I've been on the
road for Texas, came for about two and a half
years now.
Speaker 3 (27:58):
That fourth quarter when Texas was trying to come back
down fourteen, that was as a lot of stadium I've
ever heard was that Buck Guye Stadium. On that fourth
down stop against the Texas offense at midfield, that was
unbelievably loud. I can only imagine how loud it was
on the field for those players. And evidently there was
a communication breakdown I would assume in large part due
(28:21):
to that communication and that noise.
Speaker 1 (28:23):
Yeah, that's the fourth down play the right side Brendon Baker.
That was kind of blowing up. On Twitter. I've heard
a lot of good takes this week's see I've read
a lot of bad takes on Twitter, and I'm sure
you have on your message boards as well. Talking about
Arches first start, and I think because you know he's
been in this program for three years, we saw him
make two starts last season, I think there was probably
(28:45):
more of an expectation for him to play better, especially nationally,
but also I think with US Texas media as well.
But you know, there were some points made. Joe Klatt,
Danny Canell, two foreigner quarterbacks, talked about that they weren't
surprised that he played so bad, considering it was his
first true road start, one hundred thousand people screaming bloody murder.
(29:05):
You know you mentioned the communication issues for new stars
and offensive line, some new receivers out there. How are
you feeling about a week removed from Arch's first start
last week against the Waho State.
Speaker 3 (29:18):
Yeah, I think your expectations are still very high for
Arcs and deservedly.
Speaker 1 (29:22):
So.
Speaker 3 (29:22):
Look again, there's you know, there's talent on this Texas
offense and until it mostly gets back, I think that's
the actual conversation is how much talent is around the
Texas wide receiving unit at the moment. But again, Texas
ran the ball well. I think that offensive line altogether
really impressed and encouraged a lot of folks around the facility.
But for Arch, I think the big thing is, Hey,
(29:44):
if your offensive line is going to play that well,
whether it's the run game or protecting him against Ohio
State on the on the road at Ohio State, you
need to trust that unit, right, You need to trust
the big guys up front that they're going to get
that job done. And that was really the big takeaway
for me, having watched it a few times, is I
don't think Arch really trusted his offensive line. And look,
(30:05):
I go back to that Georgia game. You know, that
was the last time that we saw Arch in an
extended series for multiple snaps, and you know, no one
trusted that offensive line against that Georgia front. And so
I you know, came to the idea and kind of
my you know, final takeaways that he was probably anticipating
a very similar game style from Ohio State, constant pressure
up front, not being able to really develop the routes
(30:29):
down the field and go through his progressions. He checked
down much earlier on Saturday than we ever saw on
his starts in twenty twenty four. On top of that,
you know, I thought he got a little skittish, as
evidenced by the sidearm throws, his footwork not following the
direction of the routes that he was throwing to. That
tells me that that internal clock again was entirely sped up,
(30:49):
and you know it's gonna take time. Fortunately, these three
next opportunities for the longhorns at home will serve as
exactly what he needs to get that internal clock up
to speed and up to what he expects from those
guys up front before Texas goes on the road to games.
Speaker 1 (31:04):
For yeah, he just never looked comfortable, right, And that
was the big takeaway for me. Even the first drive.
You know, he rolls out to the right. I don't
know it his wingo or more cutting across the field,
but you know when you saw him getting ready to throw,
you thought fifteen yard completion. It's a throw that you know,
we've seen quin yours make a lot and it came
up with five yards short. And to me that was
an uh oh okay. You know, either his shoulder just
(31:27):
came out of socket or maybe he has a little
bit more nerves than we thought. And I think because
of his last name, the expectations, we kind of assume, oh,
he'll be fine, he's ready for this moment, when in reality, well,
he's never been in a moment like this. He mentioned
Georgia A and M, but he had never had the
start a game like that, never had to prepare a
full season leading up to a game, and obviously probably
(31:48):
the biggest season opening game. I think in college football history,
especially in the modern day. You mentioned the receiver part
of it, because I've been super high in this receiver room.
There's so much talent here, incredible receiver class coming in
with Cleek c Locket, Jamie French, McCutcheon, Butler, Michael Terry,
so many guys, Emmett Moley. But it felt like last
(32:08):
week leaving that game, does Texas have a number one
wide receiver?
Speaker 4 (32:16):
Oh, you leave a big question there.
Speaker 3 (32:18):
Now it should be Ryan Wingo, and I think by
the end of the year it unequivocally will be DeAndre
Moore very much in that conversation as well, and I
think we were all encouraged by the playmaking ability, the
fifty to fifty catch ability of Parker Livings from vertically
down the field. That's a solid basis. Now you're gonna
need someone else to join that group. But to your question,
you know who is that wide receiver one? It was
(32:41):
Ryan Wingo on Saturday a week ago. You know, Texas
tried what they could to get Ryan Wingo the ball,
and I know that you look at the stat sheet
and he said, well they didn't do a good job.
It was like, well, yeah, no one on the offensive
side of the ball really did a good job against
the Buck guys.
Speaker 4 (32:54):
On the season opener.
Speaker 3 (32:55):
But the way that plays are designed, the way that
Arch is looking for his red primarily to Ryan Wingo,
He's going to be the guy that sees the bulk
of you know, those pass attempts for March Manning.
Speaker 4 (33:07):
The big thing for.
Speaker 3 (33:08):
Me who becomes a guy that Texas can dump down
a screen to and create ten to fifteen yards after
the catch, because we know that they have the physical
size required on the outside to spur guys loose.
Speaker 4 (33:21):
But is there a guy that.
Speaker 3 (33:22):
Can create tackles for a lot or miss tackles force
as we've talked about. You know, we saw the you know,
the little dump downs to CJ. Baxter out of the
back though that's great, but a year ago with jadon Blue,
those are extended plays that are going for twenty thirty yards.
Speaker 4 (33:35):
So that's my big question.
Speaker 3 (33:37):
Who can create with the ball in their hands versus
who ultimately becomes the guy that catches a lot of passes.
Speaker 4 (33:42):
I think those two answers are a whole lot different
at the moment.
Speaker 1 (33:45):
Yeah, we've seen what Sart can do with guys with
speed and space. You know, you mentioned Jayden Blue, who
is fantastic at it. Xavier Worthy. You know, I think
a lot of Redstone issues were solid because Xavier Worthy
was so quick that that cornerbacks just were going to
be able to defend him one on one in the
red area. Okay, you mentioned the offensive line, and this
might be the answer to this question. But you know,
(34:07):
we've had all the negative talk. Let's find some positive
talk here. What was a player or positional group that
you left Saturday going, oh, okay, I feel much better
about this player or this group going throughout the rest
of the season. And why is it?
Speaker 7 (34:21):
Probably?
Speaker 3 (34:21):
Look, I'll start. I'll start with that offensive line. No
rush attempts resulted in negative yards. Now, there was a
few obviously that resulted in zero you know, all of
a few of which were on those QB snakes that
ended up not you know, fair and well for the
Longhorns there, but you know only one and a half
sacks only lost about three yards on those two plays.
(34:44):
I thought Texas is an offensive line up front did
a great job on the road. Again, the miscommunication that
hurt I think now you're kind of getting a sense
of how important communication will be especially when you go
to Gainsville, when you go to Athens later on this season.
But that unit was really impressed as well as the
defensive line. Now, I thought that that Texas would have
enough talent there. How quickly would they get up to
(35:05):
speed to kind of mirror that of what we saw
in twenty three and twenty four.
Speaker 4 (35:09):
Well the answers there.
Speaker 3 (35:10):
You know, Texas has five or six guys that they
can roll through deeply at that defensive line spot and
see consistent play all the way throughout.
Speaker 1 (35:18):
Yeah, I think, you know, because this year it was
kind of going in like okay, man, you know, Texas
is replacing a lot of big guys up front on
the defensive front. I think now we just got to
give Kenny Baker the ben of the doubt because it
doesn't matter they have seven new transfers coming in. That
d line looked just as good as it did last
season against a real good Ohio State offense.
Speaker 4 (35:37):
It truly it did.
Speaker 3 (35:39):
And you know, again, I know a lot of folks
are going to look at the pass rush and say,
well where was the pass rush? Ohio State didn't give
Texas a lot of opportunity to throw to really pin
their ears back and rush the quarterback. But what they
did do is give them plenty of opportunities to see
how they fit up in the run game and for
the longest rush of the day to be eight yards.
Speaker 4 (35:58):
Sign me off.
Speaker 1 (35:59):
I approve heading into this game against Jose State, where
there's going to be ample opportunity this week, in the
next three weeks for a lot of guys, including arts Manning,
to get some reps, including guys who did not play
against Oaho State. I thought Sark, you know, kept it
pretty tight in terms of rotation. I think when he
saw one freshman receiver it was McCutcheon, and he said
(36:20):
a Monday that the next guy up would have been
Ryan Niblett offensively and defensively. Who are some of the
younger guys or guys who do not play against Ohio
State that you're looking forward to seeing tomorrow in these
next three weeks, get some more reps before conference play begins.
Speaker 3 (36:33):
Yeah, I'll start running back because I think that's a
really intriguing position. We only saw two backs on the
field in Columbus of C. J. Baxter was Trey Weisner.
It's kind of what you expected coming into this big game.
But Christian Clark is that next guy for me at
that position, and if he really emerges as somebody that
the staff can trust, not only is he a threat
out of the backfield in the passing game, but he
allows Texas to get very multiple should they go into
(36:55):
twenty twenty one twenty two personnel with two running backs
on the field, something that they didn't do on the
road in Columbus.
Speaker 4 (37:02):
So he's the one guy offensively I'm.
Speaker 3 (37:05):
Excited for, especially if Texas starts to really pivot its
personality and identity offensively to a pound and ground game
with arch maning and really benefiting from play action. Defensively,
it's Joneral Williams, And you know, it's how could it
not be? You know, we saw how much of an
impact he had on the diamond. Now on the grid iron,
where he's probably a more natural playmaker, if he gets
(37:26):
into that rotation and becomes a guy that Texas can
rely on, it's going to be very difficult for him
to not see the feel consistently and very often even
in sec play.
Speaker 6 (37:37):
Talking with CJ.
Speaker 1 (37:38):
Vogel from on Texas Football, is Jonah the one guy
you get asked the most about on y'all's live streams
and message boards.
Speaker 2 (37:47):
Williams.
Speaker 3 (37:47):
He's got to be and there's such a lower to him,
you know, it's a five star two sport freak out.
Speaker 4 (37:52):
Where is he?
Speaker 3 (37:52):
When can we see him? Folks want to get eyes
on him, and hopefully it's this weekend.
Speaker 1 (37:57):
What was your your season prediction before State and has
it changed it all after the loss?
Speaker 4 (38:04):
Yeah, I had eleven to one.
Speaker 3 (38:05):
Originally lost to Georgia in Georgia, and look, I still
want to sit there and say that it's going to
be a ten and two lost to Georgia, but Texas
needs to prove that over the next three weeks. And
again I know that it's not against great competition, but
at least check the boxes and have me sit back
and say, Okay, what maybe didn't show up on the
road in Columbus has been remedied. We've seen the bright spots,
(38:28):
We've seen the step taken on both sides of the football. Defensively,
I thought Texas was well ahead of the offense. Obviously
I don't need to really go into too much depth there,
but ten and two I think Texas right now, and
for Sarkeisians specifically, it's not so much a talent issue,
but it's a coaching matchup issue. I think Kirby Smart,
(38:48):
with the way that he kind of schematically goes about
playing at a Sarkesian offense, it's more problematic for Texas
there than it is from a talent perspective.
Speaker 1 (38:57):
Yeah, I had eleven to one. Also, I think what
that law, Maybe the floor was a little bit lower
for me now, maybe nine to three because if Arts
was routed against Ohio State, you know, Gainesville, if Florida
can find a way to be undefeated going to that game,
that's going to be an insane environment. And also Athens
as well, Georgia. Kirby Smart might just have sarks number here.
(39:18):
What you think of LSU, the win, Garrett nus Meyer
and then also Alabama's lost, because you know week one
there's going to be overreactions. But I'm just curious that
maybe that changed your perception of the SEC and how
it plays out now, because after week one, I think
the biggest riser was LSU and Garrett Nusmeyer in terms
of the national perception and a lot of people now
(39:39):
picking them the best team in the country and the
win the SEC.
Speaker 4 (39:43):
Yeah, I'll start with LSU.
Speaker 3 (39:45):
First off, if that defense is legitimate, that's a big
threat to all of the SEC. Again, no Smayer, being
a veteran guy, having seen as much time in college
football as he has, he's going to perform well on
the big stage. We know that LSU has talent around him,
and they have talent in the backfield alongside him, especially
Kayden during I'm a big fan of his speed. But
(40:07):
if that defense is legit, and it looked to be
just that at Clemson, that's a big, big threat for
the Georgias, the Texas and the Alabama's who look, I
just planted a flower on their grave at the beginning
of the week.
Speaker 4 (40:20):
I think they're done, you know.
Speaker 3 (40:22):
And that was a team I predicted to go to
the SEC Championship to face Texas earlier on in August.
So I don't see the Alabama physicality. I don't see
the toughness that was a staple under Nick Saban. And
if that's the case, how do you then get that
mentality back? Having lost your season opener in such embarrassing fashion,
that's a tough, slippery slope if you're Alabama to tread,
(40:45):
and right now, I don't think that they make it
to the top of the hill. I think that's a
dangerous season ahead of them unless someone in that locker
room kind of takes the reins and it's not gonna
be Caitlin de boor. It's gotta be someone player led
and say, hey, this is not the Alabama standard. So
I'm buying LSU selling Alabama Ultimately. I think that's something
(41:05):
I didn't expect coming into twenty twenty five.
Speaker 8 (41:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (41:08):
I think Cayden Proctor gave up six hurries in that game,
which is just insane because he's he could possibly be
a first round traff pick.
Speaker 6 (41:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (41:17):
Last thing for you was last night's Cowboys lost the
most obvious loss in NFL history, Like, did did you
at any point think Dallas is going to win that game?
Speaker 3 (41:28):
No, until the field goal right before half, cause you stayed,
you know, one to one in terms of scoring. And
I say that I didn't expect the Cowboys to get
a stop all evening. Evidently that second half that came
out and they were fantastic, but they can't.
Speaker 4 (41:45):
They went into halftime down to one.
Speaker 3 (41:47):
I said, okay, your own part, because they haven't looked
like they've been able to stop the Cowboy offense either.
Now it's basically a race to who gets the next stop,
and then turn it turned into who got the next
score that won the full cam. That was the ultimate
worst case for me as someone who watches the Cowboys,
because I came in, We've talked about this. I did
(42:07):
not want to have any expectations for this Cowboys season.
I just wanted to go with the flow. I watched
the games. I'll root for them if they win, but
ultimately the expectations were in the dirt.
Speaker 4 (42:17):
And now I'm sitting around saying, wow, that was a
pretty darn good game.
Speaker 3 (42:20):
You know, they look good when they had Kenny Clark
on the field, They had some lockdown cornerbacks, they didn't
allow the exposive to play outside of the one they
bottled up Saquon Barkley.
Speaker 4 (42:29):
And now I'm here sitting here thinking, you know what,
maybe they got a team.
Speaker 3 (42:32):
Maybe I'm got my expectations rising again. And that's a
dangerous spot to.
Speaker 1 (42:35):
Be in this Cowboy It's exactly what Jerry Jones wants
you to think.
Speaker 9 (42:39):
Is that.
Speaker 1 (42:39):
Okay? You know what I'm back in. I told people today,
just don't fall for it, don't I took the fight.
Speaker 3 (42:46):
I'm like the SpongeBob character getting you know, playing with
the hook, and the next thing you see is I'm
going all the way up to the surface because I've
been caught.
Speaker 4 (42:53):
They got me.
Speaker 1 (42:54):
Cjvogal, thanks much of the time, brother, Thanks for stopping by.
Tell the folks where they can watch and listen and

Jay Kerman, the band is from San Jose, Oh Okay,

but that is where they formed, is where they got
their start.
Speaker 1 (44:39):
Yeah, your long train ride to get there. It's a
love love the Doobie Brothers. I'm most so on their
classic rock side. Craigway of course loves them for the
Michael McDonald area the yacht rock era, but I like
the yacht rock stuff too. Craig out today. He'll be
back tomorrow, of course, Texas taking on Santo State University.
(45:03):
A quick rundown of what's to come on tomorrow's programming.
We'll begin at seven thirty am Central Time on thirteen hundred.
It'll be the third and Longhorn Preview podcast. Nick Shuley
and every Longhard you can think of on that show.
It's like ten guys on in the studio. They break
it down. Got Jeremy Hills, Rod Babers. I don't know
if Fozzy was on this episode, but Fozzy Whitaker's a
(45:24):
part of them. Alex okafor Derek Johnson. They got the
whole crew, so they'll get things kicked off for us.
Seven thirty eight o'clock live from Beevo Boulevard. On the
hook him hangout in the wind Ship Circle Longhorns Game
Day me Cameron Parker alongside Mike Hardball Hars and the
world Strongest Man in w WE Hall of Famer in
DJ Mark Henry Returns. I believe he came back today.
(45:47):
He's been gone for like a year, traveling the world,
must be nice, must be nice. But we'll be back
live on at Bevo Boulevard. We got Nick Shuley and
Jeremy Hill's joining us from the Third and Longhorn. We
got Greg Waye and Roger Wallas. We got on War
Richardson from Orange Bloods dot com. And we got insight,
we got predictions, and we're gonna have a lot of fun.
(46:09):
So come out if you're gonna be down there, you
want to say what's up to us? We are right
next to Big Bertha in the food truck, so you
need some grub, you need some drink, Come out, listen
to us, take a picture with Mark Henry, say what's
up to Mike Cards and myself. We want to see
you guys out there. We'll be at the front of
the Windship circle, so at the front of hook them
hangout where San Jack and the Lost Dodds kind of
(46:31):
intersect that four way stop the left. Just look for us.
There will be a lot of maps out there. Just
check Texas Longhorns dot com. But we'll be out there
from eight to ten ten o'clock. Network coverage begins now.
The Run Rock Express are playing on thirteen hundred and
twelve fifty, so UT football will be on ninety eight
one Cavet and will also be on one on three one,
Austin's eighty station. So have the iHeart app ready. But
(46:53):
if you tune in the thirteen hundred and you're wondering
why you're healing Rylan Kobri and not Craig Waite, your
phone's not broken, don't email me because I'm telling you
right now. It'll be a ninety eight one cave in,
So listen to ninety eight one. Gave it, thank you.
But postgame coverage third Longhorn guys once again, they'll be
live on thirteen hundred the Zone following the Express, you know,
(47:17):
guessing about four o'clock. We'll see how long this game goes.
But it'll be Nick Shuley back in studio. Last week,
I think it was Nick, Aaron Williams.
Speaker 9 (47:28):
Man.
Speaker 1 (47:28):
There's two more guys that I just can't remember. But again,
if they played at Texas, they're they're probably on the show.
So they have some great analysis. You can tune into
the live stream on YouTube, Twitter, Facebook and you can
leave a comment. So if you want to ask him
a question, like hey, eron, you know what do you
see defensively from Manny Muhammad or Grayson Littleton, that reminds
you of you know, Shockey Brown and Curtis Brown and
(47:49):
yourself back in the Many Diaz early twenty ten days.
You know, something like that. They'll take your questions and
they'll be live on thirteen hundred the Zone. So looking
forward to that. Also looking forward to see how Texas
response after losing to Ohio State last week. I think
it would have been a lot different story if Texas
had played the Spartans last week in Ohio State this week.
(48:12):
But hey, you can't change the schedule. Texas loss. It
is what it is. Hindsight is twenty twenty. But Steve
Sarkeshan discussed this game during his weekly SEC teleconference. This
was on Wednesday. We're gonna play this to you in full,
So here's Steve Sarksan beginning discussing this week two matchup
as Texas tries to rebound from last week's loss to
(48:34):
the Buckeyes.
Speaker 10 (48:35):
First opportunity home at DKR, which we're obviously very excited
about that, with an opportunity to play in front of
our home crowd and our fans, you know, coming off
of last week's ball game. I think there was a
couple of key components won our health, which was important
coming out of that game healthy to continue to develop
(48:57):
all the players in our program, not only our frontline players,
but a lot of our younger players. And so it's
been a good week of prep that way. Obviously, you know,
we're we're looking for, you know, more production from the
offensive side of the ball, uh, and continuing to play
a brand and style of defense that that we've been playing,
you know. Uh, you know, we continuing to emphasize trying
(49:18):
to create turnovers, getting after the ball, but looking forward
to playing a quality football game in all three phases.
Speaker 1 (49:25):
Hey, coach, a pleasure to talk to you today. I
appreciate it.
Speaker 11 (49:29):
I was wondering over over the years as a coach,
how is your process and the philosophy evolved on fourth downs?
Speaker 10 (49:39):
Well, I think historically, you know, I've always tended to
be on the aggressive side on fourth downs. You know,
a lot of that has been in the past predicated on,
you know, the flow of the game, you know how
you're playing on defense, you know what's the score, what's
the situation, things of that, and do you like the
(50:01):
things that you have up. You know, over the past
you know, five six, seven years or so, you know,
analytics have has become more involved, and I think has
has shifted some people's thoughts to become more aggressive. I
think on a lot of those things, analytics has probably
reinforced where my gut has been at on those situations. Again,
(50:24):
we don't we don't live and die by analytics.
Speaker 4 (50:26):
It's it's a great kind of.
Speaker 10 (50:30):
You know, statistic to to either reaffirm some of your
thoughts or challenge some of your thoughts in those situations.
And at times, you know, you can lean into the
analytics and go with it that way. But the majority
of it is it's part of the decision for us.
But but we're probably leaned towards the more aggressive side.
Speaker 2 (50:49):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (50:50):
And that's been for for almost two decades now.
Speaker 10 (50:53):
And that's you know, I think a lot of that
is my I cut my teeth with Pete Carroll and
and we were aggressive at our time at USC and
so but it's not reckless. I think it's it's thoughtful
and thought out of the situations as the arise of
of why you'd want to go forward on a fourth
down or not.
Speaker 11 (51:12):
Yeah, I was there Saturday. Take me back to I
guess the first fourth down you guys went for there?
Was that informed by the book or was that something like, hey,
let's let's send a message here kind of take me
back to that that play as well.
Speaker 10 (51:27):
Yeah, the first one, I believe we quarterback sneak. If
I'm not mistaken. I got to think it all through
in the back of my head. If that's the one
you're referring to, I believe we sneak, and I think
we get it. As a matter of fact, we sneak
it for a first down. And then we have a
second fourth down much which was about a fourth and
two I think, maybe just across midfield, and you felt
(51:49):
actually really good about that hash that call. You know, again,
my thought, my plan was to go for it. The
book reaffirmed that to go for it. But again, and
I was already kind of in that mode because of
the situation in the game and where we were and
what hash we were on, and what call we had
up specifically for that for that moment, And so it
(52:10):
was pretty easy to go for it in that moment
for us.
Speaker 9 (52:12):
Given the expanded of the college football playoff and the
high intensity of game one, how valuable is playing a
game that has really shows you what you got that
early and.
Speaker 1 (52:27):
Early in a season for you coach.
Speaker 10 (52:29):
Well, I think it's really helpful, you know, challenging environment
one for our team in particular, which wasn't returning a
lot of experienced players on the offensive side of the ball,
and so I thought we had to grow up quickly
in game to challenging opponent on both sides of the ball.
(52:52):
You know, I think I think coach data is a
tremendous job in all three phases, and so the preparation
of what it takes to prepare for a game like
that that I think caught our players attention immediately, and
I think it now gives us a real spotlight on
our team and areas that are strengths that we can
lean into, areas where we know we need improvement and
(53:15):
we can improve upon over the next three weeks before
we have to go into SEC play. And obviously our
SEC opener is at Florida on the road, and so
we're going to be in another environment like that, and
so I think there's a lot that we can take
from this game that you know, if we hadn't played
in that game and just played three non conference home
games and so on and so forth. You know, maybe
(53:38):
you're not as prepared, you know, for your SEC opener.
And I think that I think that, you know, the
expansion of the playoffs.
Speaker 4 (53:48):
Allows you to go play in those games.
Speaker 10 (53:50):
Now you can't you don't ever want to just go
play and not win. You know, we're playing to win
in those moments, and it's helpful if you can win.
But the expansion of the playoffs I do think gives
you a little breathing room to be willing to go
play those games. Like I said before the game, I
think it was great for college football. The the exposure
that that thing, that game got obviously with game day,
(54:11):
coach Corso, all the things, you know, you know, Fox,
big new Kick, all the things that came along with it.
They were defending national champs, we had played in the
Semis the year before.
Speaker 4 (54:21):
You know, it was great for college football.
Speaker 10 (54:22):
It was great exposure for our team, uh and definitely
a lot of lessons learned that we can we can
build upon as as we head into the you know,
in throughout the season.
Speaker 9 (54:31):
It really, at least from an offensive and defensive standpoint,
starts with the line. What did you learn most about
your O line and D line and what would you
like to see against San Jose State coach?
Speaker 4 (54:42):
Yeah, you know, I was.
Speaker 10 (54:43):
I was honestly impressed with our line of scrimmage play.
You know, the fact that if you would have told me,
you know, we were going to walk out of uh,
you know that that game having rushed for nearly one
hundred and seventy yards against that defense, and that we
were going to walk out of that game holding them
I think to two point eight yards per carry. The
fact that you know, I think we gave up one sack,
(55:07):
and you know, I think that probably the biggest thing,
and that we didn't have a lot of opportunities. I
just wish we could have affected the quarterback a little
bit more than we did. On the defensive side of
the ball. Not a lot of opportunities. I didn't throw
it a whole lot. We had a couple of chances
and we just didn't. We weren't able to make a
couple of plays to to get to the quarterback. But
I think for the first time, playing with really four
(55:29):
new starters on the offensive line, a lot of new
faces on our defensive front, I think I was impressed,
but I.
Speaker 4 (55:36):
But I also know there's room for improvement for both
sides of the ball.
Speaker 7 (55:40):
Thank you coach. Hey, hey, Steve, appreciate the time. I
just wanted to check in with you. Have you landed
on a backup quarterback? And if so, can you kind
of walk us through how you got there.
Speaker 4 (55:51):
Yeah, that's a really fluid situation.
Speaker 8 (55:53):
You know.
Speaker 10 (55:54):
It's it's kind of similar to in years past, and
that you know, from week to week we give those
guys an opportunity to compete and evaluate to keep their
competitive juices going. In last week's game, it would have
been Matt Caldwell the first guy that would have went
into the game if something if something had occurred there
with Arch. But again, we'll evaluate it here towards the
(56:16):
end of this week and then and then make a decision.
Speaker 4 (56:18):
So it's a little bit more on a weekly basis.
Speaker 7 (56:20):
I guess what kind of influenced you to go that
route with it? Is that how you've treated the backup
QB position in the past, What's what's the mindset there?
Speaker 10 (56:28):
I think there's a lot of factors managing the team
on the field, the comfort level with the game plan,
the way they perform throughout the week, where we think
they're at physically, where we think they're at mentally. So
there's a lot that goes into it, and in the end,
it's just trying to get the guy out there that
that we think it gives us the best opportunity to
(56:50):
have some success.
Speaker 1 (56:52):
Hey, Steve just wanted to.
Speaker 6 (56:55):
Check in with you.
Speaker 11 (56:56):
Are you expecting Emmett Moseley back this week or will
he be out for a while And how excited are
you to see some of the guys who didn't play
Saturday get on the field.
Speaker 4 (57:06):
Yeah, I mean, we're monitoring that closely.
Speaker 10 (57:08):
I think if he does go Saturday, it'll be on
a limited basis, but we'll see.
Speaker 4 (57:13):
Again.
Speaker 10 (57:13):
I'm not in a rush with him because when we
get him out there, I want to make sure that
he's healthy, and so I'm gonna lean into our training
staff on that of what that looks like for Emmett.
I know he's chomping at the bit to get out there,
and I know we're excited to get him out there.
Speaker 4 (57:28):
But that remains to be seen.
Speaker 10 (57:30):
I am hopeful that we can play some more players
in this game. You know it's gonna be an eleven
am kick Saturday in dk R, which we all know.
You know, whatever the temperature is, you know that that
our phones tell us the temperature is on the field
is probably a good another thirty thirty five degrees hotter
on that turf. So we're gonna have to play more
players and rely on more players that way. And there
(57:54):
are some guys that I'm I'm definitely excited for in
all three phases, whether it's on special teams, you know,
on offense and or def and so probably see a
little bit more of a rotation that way. And you know, guys,
guys getting some opportunities to go play.
Speaker 1 (58:08):
It's supposed to be a lot cooler tomorrow. And in fact,
if you're going to the game, I'd be a little
bit excited. You might need to wear pants. I'm thinking
about wearing pants in the morning. I'm probably not well.
I will wear shorts, like I will not be completely naked.
Let's get that straight. It's supposed to be a kick
off eighty one degrees. That's that's good humidity sec high.
(58:32):
So yeah, I guess, you know, just tick the shorts.
But it will be a lot better than it was
one hundred and two yesterday. It's ninety nine right now
and sunny, so a bit of a reprieve at dk
R tomorrow.
Speaker 12 (58:45):
But.
Speaker 1 (58:46):
We will see Emitt Mosley there. You heard from Sark
kind of sounds like he's not gonna play. I mean again,
there's no point in rushing men out there in Week two. However,
it'd be nice, you know, for Arts to be able
to develop some chemistry because that's the one thing that
does concern me. And I kind of thought maybe plague
Texas last year with Quinn Yours in his relationship with
(59:08):
Isaiah Bond you know, it felt like they weren't always
on the same page, and a lot of it. You know,
Bondi comes in a little bit late the transfer from Alabama.
He's nicked up, Quinn is nicked up. You want to
be able. You want your quarterback to be able to
develop a relationship with white outs. And that's why I
think in the second half, honestly, when Arts was just like, okay,
I got to get the ball out, I got to
(59:30):
start being aggressive, he started throwing to eighty three. And
I think that's because in spring ball, remember Ryan Wingo
was out, DeAndre Moore was out. The number one receiver
for Texas during spring because mostly was out was probably
Parker Livingstone, right, So Arch had that relationship, he had
the chemistry. You just thought, Hey, where's eighty three at?
(59:50):
So Livingstone may end up, you know, I asked CJ. Vogel,
Is there a number one receiver on this team? It
should be Ryan Wingo, But I think living Stone is
going to have a huge year for Texas, even with
the return of Emmett Moseley. Our two continues here get
some more player sound, including the punter up next on
(01:00:13):
thirteen hundred the Zone. Making our way through hour two,
Jay Carman, what do you got for us here?
Speaker 9 (01:00:19):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (01:00:19):
Rain King by the Counting Crows another Bay Area band. Okay,
that gets you fired up. I love Counting Crows. Okay,
why too soft for you?
Speaker 6 (01:00:29):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (01:00:29):
Maybe a little here? Yeah, I don't know, but that's
just my personal preference here. You are, you are the
producer today, so it's your call on what you like here.
Angry texts coming my way? Ah, don't know about that.
Maybe towards Jerry Jones the Cowboys that's coming up here
the next hour. I want to play for you guys,
(01:00:52):
might sit down with Jack Bowmeister the Texas Longhorns punter
by way of Bendigo, Victoria, Australia, begin his career the
utah Utes and has made his way to Austin. Had
he was may have been most consistent Blair on Saturday
for Texas. So got to meet Jack, got to sit
(01:01:13):
down and talk about his journey to Austin, what it
was like for him to be able to play at
the Horseshoe, and getting ready to putt in dk R tomorrow.
All right, let's get us straight. Tell all the folks
how to say your last name. Barmesta Bowmeaster, Yeah, okay,
Jack Bowmester starting point for the University of Texas.
Speaker 6 (01:01:32):
From Bendigo, Australia.
Speaker 1 (01:01:33):
Bendigo, Victoria, Yeah, to Salt Lake City and now the Austin, Texas.
Is there ever a moment where you reflect and wonder
how do I find myself here?
Speaker 7 (01:01:44):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (01:01:44):
I think a lot of times.
Speaker 8 (01:01:45):
I think running out on Saturday was a pinch environment
for Sial.
Speaker 6 (01:01:50):
I couldn't help it small.
Speaker 8 (01:01:53):
It's just one of those environments in your career where
you kind of go like, how did I get myself
to this point?
Speaker 6 (01:02:00):
I think the game was on at two am back
in Australia.
Speaker 8 (01:02:03):
But I had a few friends that got up for
it and watch it and they just couldn't believe how
many people were packed in to a college game.
Speaker 6 (01:02:13):
Yeah, it's been a whirl win, but excited to be here.
Speaker 1 (01:02:17):
And yeah, did you have to explain to anyone back
home why there was a man in a tuxedo putting
on the Ohio Steve mascot head before the game kicked off?
Speaker 6 (01:02:28):
No one's actually asking that.
Speaker 8 (01:02:30):
I think Dad may have said something, but I just
said that he's a legend and it was his last
college game day. But I think the guys are a
bit more involved. They know Pat McAfee, so they kind
of connected the dots there, and they know obviously Nick Saban,
so they're like it must be a pretty big deal.
Speaker 1 (01:02:51):
So, of course, talking about Luke Corsol's final college game
day to the game itself, you pleaded fantastics three punts
inside the twenty. You mentioned that fear the environment, the
pitch be moment, but it seemed like you were pretty
prepared for it.
Speaker 5 (01:03:04):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (01:03:05):
I think just during full camp, the pressure that Coach
Banks tries to emulate.
Speaker 6 (01:03:15):
Yeah, I mean, it's just sometimes in the games it
can be a lot simpler for you. You kind of
know exactly.
Speaker 7 (01:03:22):
What you're doing.
Speaker 8 (01:03:23):
You get out there, I have my target ready and
you just go for it. Sometimes practice you can get
caught up in thinking about it too much, but in
a game it's kind of like, right, I need to
do this for the team, and this is all I
need to do. So I find a bit of piece
sometimes in running out there. And obviously you can only
see eye levels, so I can't see that thousands of
(01:03:43):
people above.
Speaker 6 (01:03:45):
But yeah, I think game day it's time. It's good
to relax and just let it happen.
Speaker 1 (01:03:50):
So and now on Saturday, get to play at GPR
for the first time against santas a state. I'm sure
of you seen videos hyping it up, but I'm sure
you're probably pretty excited to be able to put an
environment that.
Speaker 8 (01:04:00):
Yeah, seeing a lot of videos a DKR, it's gonna
be good fun. I think we're a really good team,
We've got really good leaders, and I think, yeah, it's
gonna be a great year.
Speaker 6 (01:04:16):
Just gotta stick to it. It's gotta stick to it.
Speaker 1 (01:04:19):
Australian rules football or American football, American football.
Speaker 8 (01:04:24):
Really, Yeah, I try to keep up with my Australian rules, but.
Speaker 6 (01:04:29):
My team is Carlton and they didn't do.
Speaker 8 (01:04:32):
So well this year, and the games are on at
like three am, so yeah, I get up and watch
the replays.
Speaker 6 (01:04:40):
But yeah, American football definitely.
Speaker 1 (01:04:43):
Well Jack, thanks so much for doing this last thing
for you. Every time I turn on a college football
game now or even NFL, the answer is always seeing
a pointer from Australia. I think at this point we
can just stop saying that it seems like every punter
is from Pro Kick Australia. Is there a secret group chat,
a secret in Masters with all the different Australian punters
from across the country that are all playing D one
(01:05:04):
college football.
Speaker 8 (01:05:06):
I've got a there is a few group chats, but
I mean I speak to most of the guys, and
I think once you kind of know before the game
whether you know the guy or not, you're always kind
of up there talking about your experience with him. So
I hadn't met the High State punter Joe beforehand, but
I was really close with the backup Nick McCarty. But
(01:05:29):
obviously you meet these guys and you talk like you've
known each other for ten years.
Speaker 6 (01:05:33):
So yeah, there's a few.
Speaker 8 (01:05:35):
Dialogues going on with some Ozzie guys, and it's always
good to just bounce stuff off each other. Yeah, I
mean you're it's your home way from home, so yeah,
that's kind of your network.
Speaker 1 (01:05:44):
So Jeff Bank, since so I find a stud bom
Easter was fantastic against Oho City. If you can punt
like that in that environment, then I feel pretty good
about what he can do. Hopefully he's not doing too
much punning these next few weeks. We'll wrap an hour
or two after this on Thegway Show. All right, final
hour of today's program, and thanks for sticking with us
(01:06:05):
here as we begin the weekend. Cameron Parker filling in
for Creig Way, who is out today, but we'll be
back tomorrow for Texas versus San Jose State University the
Spartans in town for a week two matchup. Jay Carman
our producer here today. If you missed any of Theday's show,
(01:06:25):
check out our podcast page on the free iHeartRadio app.
CJA Focal from on Texas Football stop by Talk Texas
with him. Got some great input on his thoughts from
last week's loss, what he's looking forward to in tomorrow's game.
We will be live broadcasting from Bevo Boulevard at eight
(01:06:48):
am tomorrow, Myself, Mike Hardball, Harte, and Mark Henry live
from Hook Him Hangout, which is in the Winship Circle,
which I'm sure three people know. Over that sat so
San Jack in the Lost Odds Way where they kind
of intersected. It's a four way stop, the terrible stop sign. Jake.
I'm sure you've driven through that a million times. It's
(01:07:09):
terrible because college students just walk through it, and I
would do the same thing, just hoping if you get
hit and get that free tuition paid for. But it's
terrible to get through.
Speaker 7 (01:07:16):
Now.
Speaker 1 (01:07:17):
Will be closed tomorrow because it is game day. But
where that little circle is, where the fountain is, in
the Winship Circle, we're gonna be at the front of it.
So look for Hook Them hang Out, look for Big Bertha,
look for the food trucks will be there and likely
Mark Henry will be chowing down on something. He always
has some sort of food or snack he has that
(01:07:37):
just constantly, just taunts being hard throughout the show. So
we'll be out there eight to ten am. Preceding that.
The third in Longhorn Preview Podcast that goes live at
seven thirty. Nick Schuley along with Rod Baber's, Jeremy Hills,
Alex Okaford, Derek Johnson, Fozzi Whittaker previewing Sant Jose State.
(01:07:59):
Before we do, we'll actually be on our pregame show
at eight o'clock two Shuley and Jeremy Hills because they
have their Longhorn or Texas Game Day show actually beginning
at ten am live from Bevo Boulevard, but they'll come
on our show or live from eight to ten. We'll
stop buying visit with Craigway, Roger Wallace also on war
Richardson from Orange Bloods dot Com. He'll come on and
(01:08:20):
join us as well. Ten o'clock Network pregame begins with Craigway,
Roger Wallace, and Will Matthews live from DKR. That'll be heard, Jacob,
you eve been paying attention. What two stations will Texas
football be on tomorrow?
Speaker 2 (01:08:33):
Well, first, you're on KPET ninety eight one, Yes, yes,
and it can also be heard on you gotta let
me off the hookup still new one of three one
Austin's eighty station.
Speaker 1 (01:08:43):
Okay, so those two because the Express are playing on
thirteen hundred. So if you tune in and you're not
hearing Craigway, no, he's not sick. It's not a fellain.
It's just Ron Kobrie calling Ron Rock Express Baseball taking
on the Abriquerque Isotopes. Who I believe you have Ivan
Melendez playing for them, the former Golden Spikes winner. Actually sorry,
(01:09:07):
he's in the Reno Aces. Forgive me, forgive me. It
called up file now good for Ivan, Good for Ivan.
But following the Express Baseball game, we will carry h
the third Longhorn postgame show. So if you're looking for
postgame coverage ninety eight one cave at FM, but then
after that live over the thirteen hundred, you can hear
(01:09:29):
Nick Schuley and the guys breakdown Texas and San Jose States.
And That's what I'm worried about.
Speaker 2 (01:09:35):
It's like Sark told them, you got to you gott
to mow your own lawn first, and then you can
worry about, you know, communicating, helping others.
Speaker 1 (01:09:42):
What are you worried about? What do you mean I'm
trying to I'm trying to get this part of the
worry about that. Yeah, I understand, I said, well, yeah,
you're doing a great job here week three. I believe
with us. It feels like you've been here forever. Okay,
to the text line again eight one five three zero
text Worth Texas followed by your message seapod button in
the the work today, let's start with seapout. Cowboys are
(01:10:04):
more disciplined. Few mistakes. Only mistakes really came from Ceedee
Lamb and Miles Sanders. Collinsworth did say too, the Cowboys
would win the Remember Dak's tackle on that fumble. Yeah,
that's true. I also remember him saying that it would
been a franchise altering loss for Philadelphia they had lost
that game. Seatpoal says he roots for Dak. He's a
good guy on the sky. Yeah. Now, if the quarterback
(01:10:27):
was Baker Mayfield, I probably feel a lot differently about
the Cowboys than I do with Dak Prescott. Jillen Carter
is a typical Georgia clown. That flunk driver Z said, oh,
that's a tough one. Arch's first play was a red flag.
Talking about that rolled out to the right, and then
what happened. The Bama's defense was supposed to be good, seapow.
(01:10:50):
If you were making a list of you know, teams,
you're going to overreact from Week one college football. You know,
probably Arch Manning is up there just in terms of
the player. In terms of teams, Alabama's got to be
probably the top of the list now. I think Mark
Novell is a great head coach. Obviously, if not for
(01:11:10):
Jordan Travis's injury, Florida State may have been the fourth
seed in the playoff. Two years ago, they missed the playoff.
And in last season, remember they lost to Georgia Tech
at Ireland to begin the season. They won two games.
Last year they won two games. So no matter which
way you cut it, they won two games. And they're
playing an Alabama team. A lot of expectations to the
(01:11:34):
Bowers' second season. Yeah, you're following the greatest coach of
all time. Well, guess what, You're also still at Alabama.
You have the resources, you have the ability to recruit talent,
and that's a very talented roster. A lot of first
round draft picks, a lot of second round drafts, a
lot of third round picks on this team. The talent
is there, and it did not look like the Alabama
(01:11:55):
Crimston Tie Jake.
Speaker 6 (01:11:56):
It was.
Speaker 1 (01:11:57):
I mean the first drive like a forty play drive.
It felt like converted every third and fourth down possible,
go up seven nothing. And then Tommy Castellanos, the Boston
College transfer, did it with his arm, did it with
his legs. He looked fantastic. Did not look like the
quarterback that was at BC for two years. Obviously, Gus
(01:12:18):
Malison has come in the new offensive coordinator, former Auburn
head coach. Seems like it's a match made in heaven
with him in norvel In Castellanos to I believe, was
at Auburn his first year in college football before transferring
to Boston College. But if you're if you're Atlanta, if
you're Alabama. I have friends that went Tobama. The alarm
(01:12:41):
bells are going off in Tuscaloosa, and you know Ty Simpson,
you know, new quarterback coming in. I understand that. But
it's the offensive line. Right, What's the one thing that's
been constant Obama since Saban took over. It was the
offensive line, and it was the defensive line.
Speaker 6 (01:12:58):
Right.
Speaker 1 (01:12:59):
You always knew they were going to have studs, and
they still do have studs. It just did not look
the part against Florida State.
Speaker 2 (01:13:08):
Cole Kublick backed up what I was thinking watching that game.
And I've got a saft spot for Alabama in my heart, Cameron,
because I think you might have been on campus when
I told Craig this. My dad from Alabama raised me
as an Alabama fan.
Speaker 4 (01:13:21):
Oh wow.
Speaker 1 (01:13:22):
So there were things.
Speaker 2 (01:13:25):
That we saw from Alabama on Saturday that you just
never saw during the Nick saban Era.
Speaker 6 (01:13:31):
No.
Speaker 1 (01:13:32):
I saw their quarterback running for his life. And that's
I mean Caden Brocter, six foot seven, you know, projected
first round draftick. He got worked, he got worked over
by the seminal defensive front. And you know, Florida State
good program too, but they won two games last season
all the expectation. Alabama was supposed to win that game.
(01:13:55):
So I'm trying not to overreact here from week one.
I'm not gonna tell you that Clemson's in trouble. I'm
not going to tell the LSU is the best team
in college football. I'm not going to tell you that
Arch Manning is a bust. But I will tell you
I am worried about Alabama because I was super high
on this team going into this season. The talent's there.
You know, they brought back Ryan Grubb, who was the
OC for the ball ra at Washington the year they
(01:14:17):
runners up to Michigan. I thought man Grub with Simpson
and Ryan Williams. But who knows, I mean, is Ryan Williams.
Is he going to play this week?
Speaker 2 (01:14:25):
I mean he was concussed late in the game on
a hit that still I don't understand how it wasn't targeting,
didn't change the outcome of the game. But Ryan Williams
took a late hit to the head and I think
he's been limited this week. They've been playing it a
little bit close to the vest. Alabama has a game
with Wisconsin, their SEC opener at Georgia.
Speaker 1 (01:14:49):
Yeah, a lot has to change before that game. Yeah,
remember they played Georgia earlier in the year last season
that was the Ryan Williams a low party. By the way,
He's day to day coming along nicely, according to According
to de Boer, a couple Twitter.
Speaker 2 (01:15:02):
Sleuths saw him practicing in the background of a video.
Speaker 1 (01:15:05):
So the Warhawks this week, and then they play at
Wisconsin next week, and then yeah open at Georgia home
for Vanderbilt, who of course up to him last year
when they were number one. Then Missouri. Then you have Tennessee,
South Carolina, LSU, and Oklahoma in four consecutive weeks. So
I think we'll have a good idea. By the way,
I think the de Borer's buy outs what like sixty
(01:15:27):
million dollars, it's very high.
Speaker 2 (01:15:29):
Look, I didn't think ty Simpson was good in that ballgame.
I didn't think he made some of the throws that
you'd expect him to make on the run. Especially now,
the fact that he was on the run, like you said,
a product of the offensive line losing in the trenches.
And to be honest, Alabama on the road against unranked
teams pretty concerning pattern under Klin de Boor. They've lost
(01:15:52):
four of those type of games already.
Speaker 1 (01:15:54):
Yeah, I think they're what four and five now in
their last nine games against Power four teams. First time
they're under five hundred since two thousand and seven, which
maybe put that stat on Nick Saban's plaque when he's
in the Coash Football Hall of Fame. Maybe he's already
in there. That's an insane length of time to not
(01:16:17):
be under five hundred for a program. Of course, you know,
maybe scheduling helps when you play. Hey, no, Alba played
some tough Week one games. They opened up some real
tough games into twenty tens. They just have been a
great team. It's just weird seeing where they're at now
it is Week one again. The talent is there gonna
be a wake up call. But the same time, like
you said, Jake, there's a lot of things there that
(01:16:39):
we saw from Alabama that we just have not seen
in a long time in Tuscaloosa. Other Week one reactions
as we had the Week two, feel good about LSU.
The defense was super concerning last year. If it is legit,
look out for LSU. At the same time, there's a
lot of a lot of maybe too much hype in
(01:17:00):
the Clemson I understand they've got you know, two future
first round draft picks on the defensive line, maybe the
most experienced quarterback in college football, and Kate club Nick
obviously an Austin guy, so good receivers him, good receivers.
I love Randall the running back, even though we can't block.
But I mean, I know they made the playoff last season, Jake,
(01:17:22):
But and they you know, they kind of came back
against Texas and I think you know that game, the
score was closer than it really was, but I never
felt really confident in Clempson last year as a football team.
Now all of a sudden, they come into this year
as like people are picking them win the national championship.
My question is, Jake, what do they do last year?
(01:17:44):
They gave you confidence that they were going to be
good this year just because they had one of the
most recognizable quarterback names and because Dabo did it ten
years ago.
Speaker 2 (01:17:52):
I think it's the guys they had coming back right,
especially on that d line like you mentioned. I think
it's the way club Nick played in Austin that inspire
a lot of people to see him taking a leap
forward that we didn't see In Week one.
Speaker 1 (01:18:06):
They had one ranked win SMU in the ACC Championship
thirty four to thirty one. Overall, they were one in
three against top twenty five teams this past season. I
think it just I think people may have been reaching
to pick them as a title winner. And I'm almost
(01:18:30):
there with Penn State. I know they hired Jim Knowles,
I know everyone knows Drowler. I know they got maybe
the best running back group in college football. But there
hasn't been a lot of confidence, haven't I haven't seen
enough from Penn State or clumps in the last few
years to have confidence all of a sudden they're going
to go from a playoff, a fringe playoff team to
winning a national championship, which it takes a little bit. Now, hey,
(01:18:51):
you only lost by seven to LSU, but again LSU
had some you know, two fumbles right in the first half.
That game could have been a bigger loss for Clemson
in terms of the score differential than it really was.
But hey, it's week one. We'll see LSU's going to
touch schedule. They got Florida in week three, the ole
miss South Carolina, And for Clemson, they're in the.
Speaker 2 (01:19:15):
ACC, so at Georgia Tech in two weeks, host SMU
in late October, host Florida State in early November, and
at South Carolina CAM to close out their regular season.
Speaker 1 (01:19:26):
And of course, you know that's not a conference game.
They lost to South Caldina last year, so they can
still find themselves in the a SEC Championship. The Florida
State game will probably possibly the side who plays in
the a SEC Championship, but the jury's out on the Tigers.
But I did like what I see from nus Meyer.
I'll tell you what you know after week one, I
(01:19:48):
think if you're trying to predict the Heisman winner, I
think Garrett nuss Meyer he's going to win it. I
think he'll be the second LSU quarterback in three years
to take home that title, and what the third in
the last decade joining what Joe, because the Joe Burrow
won the Heisman? Yeah he won. Joe Seichsty won the Heisman, right,
so be Burrow Jaydon Daniels. And that's my prediction. But
(01:20:09):
we'll see. We'll continue to talk college football here. More
Cowboys stuff coming up here next. However, my conversation with
Texas running back CJ. Baxter will be making his return
the DKR for the first time in six hundred and
fifty two days. Fire me up Friday. Where are they from?
In California, La? Not quite San Jose, But feedback was noted.
(01:20:31):
We needed to get a little more fired up. Yeah,
that does it for me, It does it does. We're hey.
In twenty four hours, Texas will be one to one,
and I think we'll feel a little bit better about
arch manning in the offense. I already feel really good
about the defense here. We talked about a little bit
with CJ. Fogel from mon Texas Football. Check it out
in the iHeart podcast page. Only allowed fourteen points in
(01:20:56):
a while state. I would have thought that would have
been enough to get it done. And I mean their
their first scoring drive aided by two penalties that kept
the Buck guys drive moving. You had a what would
have been a safety taken away because of an illegal
hands to the face penalty on Lafoul. By the way,
did the rewatch last night. Lafoul was a menace in
(01:21:21):
that game. He was blowing up the Ohio State offensive line.
He was in the backfield, he was making life miserable
for Julian saying at times in that game, I'm super
impressed by his next step. I mean, we already know
about Anthony Hill and Colin Simmons and Trey Moore, but
(01:21:42):
I think Lafoul may have I think he was the
highest graded pro football focused player. You know, I don't
think Steves or Keys from the Texas staff are big
PFF guys, but hey, sometimes the film, what is it
the film matches the eye or was it the tap
matches There's some football I don't know Craigingway knows it.
(01:22:05):
But what the PFF score was kind of match what
I saw on tape with Lafoul.
Speaker 2 (01:22:10):
I just know what you hear in Casino, the eye
in the sky don't lie.
Speaker 1 (01:22:13):
Yeah, yeah, well my eye, I'll tell you what. Lafou
was everywhere in that game. So I feel pretty good
about the Texas defense. Ohio State averaged two point three
yards per carry, saying one hundred and twenty six yards.
Jeremiah Smith had six receptions for forty three yards. Guys,
(01:22:34):
and it wasn't just one guy. I thought Many Muhammad
was great against him. Grayson Littleton, the freshman did a
fantastic job. He was awesome all day long. I thought
Jillen Gilbert was excellent even in that touchdown reception by
Carl Tate's good defense. Good defense is a good throw,
great reception from Cardinal Tate, who has been a Texas
(01:22:54):
killer in these two games. But the interior defensive line
was great, and I think, you know, look at the score,
the box score, no sacks. Well, Ohio State obviously very
familiar with the Texas defensive front from last year. And
you know tours end in that game, the Texas defensive
(01:23:15):
edges and the blitz is from PK really got to
Will Howard, and I think Ryan Day and Brian Hartline's
kind of game plan was we're not gonna let Julian
Saying get hit. We do not want him take a snap,
take a sack, and they schemed up a great game plan,
very quick passes, and even when Saying did have to
(01:23:38):
drop back, you know he had time and I don't.
I don't think p K the defense really won the
blitz as much with the weapons of who State has
the Max Clayer and Jeremiah Smith and Carnald Tate. So
I'm not worried about the pass rush just because of
the way o Waho State kind of schemed up that
game plan. I think both coaches not were conservative, but
(01:24:05):
we did not see I think the playbook really open
up for either the offense or the defense in either side.
Because it always is only week one the college football season.
But I'm guessing the next few weeks we're gonna we're
gonna hear from Colin Simmons and Trey more in the
Texas edge rushers a lot more as I take on
(01:24:26):
San Jose State and then you TEP the week after,
and then Sam Houston to close out non conference play. Offensively,
how will this offense look after just seven points against
the Buck guys. Some struggles on third and fourth down
in the red area as well, but one positive note
(01:24:50):
I think was the rushing offense one hundred and sixty
six yards more than double Ohio States output Trey Wisner
five yards per CJ. Baxter four yards per carry. Loved
the movement from the young guys up front, and for CJ.
Baxter has been a long time coming. Of course, the
highly titled running back from Florida was number two behind
(01:25:14):
Jonathan Brooks two years ago. In that twenty twenty three season,
was posted to the number one running back going into
last year towards ACL in LCL and his knee missed
the entire season. But he's back. He's back, and we
weren't sure how much playing time he would get last week,
(01:25:35):
but he looks good to go. And I had the
opportunity to sit down with CJ earlier this week and
discuss his return to the football field and also how
excited he is to be able to play at DKR tomorrow. TJ,
first off, so happy to have you back on the field.
I'm sure for you it must have been a long
time coming. I get that first rat back on the
(01:25:56):
field against Ohio State. What was that moment like for
you the build actually returned to the field after such
a long year of rehabbing and going through that process.
Speaker 13 (01:26:04):
Yeah, when we got to the stadium, I walked on
the field and I soaked it all in, just to
be thankful for the moment to be back out there.
The big thing is, like I said, I'm just thankful,
grateful to be back out there and being able to
play at a high level game.
Speaker 1 (01:26:17):
We talked about your relationship with with Trey Wisner and
traising the same thing. To be able to be out
there and actually, you know, play alongside him and Jared
Gibson all the good running backs like that, it must
have been a pretty special moment to you as well.
Speaker 13 (01:26:29):
Yeah, it's super special playing with those guys. They just
make me better each and every day because I have to,
you know, go out there and make plays. Tray's a
He's super energetic, so he brings energy every time he
makes a plass like I have to make one.
Speaker 4 (01:26:43):
We're the same way. We were super competitive with each other.
But it's.
Speaker 6 (01:26:49):
TJ first.
Speaker 1 (01:26:50):
Is it hard to be able to process that because
obviously you want to win every game, but then you know,
the season goes all the way into January. It's just
one game. It wasn't a conference game. Is there message
that maybe you and the younger get to the younger
guys or is that already just known about in the
locker room.
Speaker 13 (01:27:05):
It's always, you know, a storm before there's light, before
the sun comes out again. And that was a storm
that that we had to go through. Uh, we'll get better,
We'll get better. It's a long season. The message to
the young guys though, also the message after the game
was I think we found something that was we had
fighting us. We fought to the very end, to the
(01:27:25):
clock had zero seconds on it. I think that's the
big thing. We went down I think it was fourteen
fourteen oh, and we fought until the end. We went
down to score, gave ourselves a chance to score again.
Speaker 4 (01:27:35):
So I think that's the big thing.
Speaker 13 (01:27:36):
There's fight in this team, and we'll just get better
and better as the week's ago, the weeks go on.
Speaker 1 (01:27:41):
We talked about that that first carry freak in Ohio State.
It's been what two years since you had to carry?
Speaker 13 (01:27:47):
Yeah, you have the date, remember I remember my last
game the Sugar Bow January turns twenty four, so I
don't remember my last game with DKR.
Speaker 1 (01:27:55):
Actually whould have been Tech Texas Tech. Yeah, that was
arch Manny's first appearance for Texas. So I'm sure you've
been counting down the second still to take a snap
obviously in a football game, but a snap back.
Speaker 6 (01:28:06):
Here in front of your home crowd.
Speaker 4 (01:28:08):
Yeah, I'm super excited playing for your home college.
Speaker 13 (01:28:11):
You said the people that support it support us, and
then rallied around me when I did get injured, So
I'm super excited.
Speaker 1 (01:28:16):
Just to see the smile on his face tells you
how how Pumpedy is for this game. He talked about it.
I think you know last week, you know, during practices
last year that Sark would would have him kind of
line up behind the offense to you know, get a
look from from his fantasy point of what it would
look like as a running back. So he was constantly
involved in practice and in the team and on the
(01:28:37):
sidelines and stuff and team meetings and you know, being
a part of the team. So wasn't able to play
because he was, you know, coming back from that injury.
But he's back now and will likely play a big
role in tomorrow, as will Trey. Why is it, and
you know, I'm curious who will be that third running back?
I mentioned Jared Gibson's name in that interview. He did
not get a carry on Saturday. Who would have been
(01:28:58):
the third running back to have seen some time? Would
it be Jared Gibson? Would it be Christian Clark, the
sophomore from from Arizona member he also to believe a
torn achilles last season. You know, he's come back. We
heard a lot of good things about him when he
came to campus and during that fall and unfortunately went
(01:29:19):
down with also another season ending injury. Is he running
back three to Gibson? Or you know, could it be
Ryan Nibblet, or maybe it's one of the you know,
incoming freshmen. We've heard a lot of good things about
James Simon. So I want to see what the running
back room looks like, and tomorrow probably will provide a
good opportunity to find out. During the SEC teleconference with Sark,
(01:29:43):
he was asked, I believe by David Eckert from the
Austin American Statesman who the number two quarterback would be,
and Sarks said, last week, it would have been Matthew Caldwell.
It'll be fun these next three weeks to see not
only Callwell play, but the development of Trey Owens and
also kJ Lacey, the freshman from Leave Alabama who we
(01:30:07):
heard a lot of great things about in the fall
camp as well. Obviously Trey Owens played some time last season.
He was what would have been the number three Tech
three quarterback for Texas, but obviously Sark wanted to bring
in someone a little bit more experience because well, unfortunately
Texas has not had a full season or their starting
quarterback has made it through the whole year without getting
(01:30:29):
injured since Ark arrived. You know, it's Kasey Thompson Hudson card.
Going back and forth Quinn's first season, we saw a
lot of Lake Murphy and then some Arch Manning, and
last season of course Arch stepping in for quinn yours
as well. So likely we will get some Matthew Caldwell
in this game tomorrow and maybe some Trey Owens. Who
is that third quarterback to come out? Is it Owens?
Is it kJ Lacey? And we will find out. So
(01:30:51):
looking forward to that. Halfway through this final hour, we
got two more segments to go before we send it
off to the weekend. Here on the Craig Ways showing up.
Hire me up Friday. I'm thirteen hundred the Zone Cameron
Parker alongside Jake Herman. As we got done with today's program.
Creig Way out today, but don't worry, he'll be at
(01:31:13):
DKR tomorrow eight am. Well. Our coverage begins at eight
am from Longhorns Game Day Network coverage for Craig and
Roger Wallason while Matthews begins at ten am and then
kickoff eleven o'clock. I think we're being told it's eleven
oh seven kicktime, so not too bad. It's on the
eleven fourteen time that we had last week as a
(01:31:34):
whole state shout out, big noon kickoff, but looking forward
to that again. Our coverage begins at seven point thirty
with the third in Longhorn Preview podcast. Longhorns Game Day
from Beavil Boulevard begins at eight me Mike Hardball, Horge
and Mark Henry, and then Texas in San Jose State
(01:31:55):
Network coverage at ten a m. And postgame coverage after
network postgame flip over the thirteen hundred with the third
and Longhorn guys Nick Shuley and his crew breaking down
and reacting and taking your comments in questions on their
postgame stream that will be broadcasted on thirteen hundred This Zone.
(01:32:18):
Before we close out today's show, let's revisit the Cowboys
loss last night to Philadelphia twenty four to twenty in
a game in which, of course, Jillen Carter just qualified
for speeding on Dak Prescott after one play, Dallas able
to move the ball pretty effectively on Philadelphia. They would
(01:32:41):
score in their first four drives of the game, two touchdowns,
two field goals, the last field goal a very quick
drive before halftime, and then moving the ball to start
the third quarter, got down to the Philadelphia eleven yard
line and Miles Sanders cops up the football and that
would really be the last time Dallas would threaten Philly.
(01:33:06):
I thought Dak played well. Of course, Cowboys did not
get help from CD Lamb with four drops. Last one,
you know, a tough catch to make, I thought collins
Worth describe it as catchable, which was which aptly described
that play. But the three other drops were just terrible
from CD Lamb on a deep ball on Dak. I
(01:33:28):
think it was a third down, Dak hit it right,
put it right in the money, would have put Dallas
inside the red zone, inside the fifteen. Lamb could not
hold on drove before that, believe another third down went
right through CD's hands, hit him in the helmet. Just
drop after drop, and CD's just he's always good for
(01:33:50):
at least one drop of game that You're just like,
how first round draft pick. And I'll tell you what,
He's a fantastic receiver. He's definitely top ten in the league.
But the drops have just been killer, and the Cowboys
are not good enough to overcome a game like that
where they're a number one receiver drops the ball four
(01:34:10):
times and then you're you're wide out or you're running
back fumbles the ball, which in that game, you know,
I think Philadelphia probably the biggest mistake was Jalen Carter
getting this qualified because if he does not spit on
Dak Prescott, are the Cowboys able to run the ball
as effectively down Philly's throat? Probably not. But outside of that,
(01:34:33):
the Cowboys just compounded their mistakes with drops and that
one costly fumble and now they're all in one. Philadelphia
want to know and you probably feel pretty good about it.
If you're Philadelphia Cowboys fans, you have a little hope
in you. There was one stat wanted to get two
and I think this is this on the broadcast last night,
Dallas had two rushing touchdowns inside the guard the two
(01:34:57):
guards for like the first time in five years, and
the first time Philadelphia had allowed two rushing touchdowns inside uh,
inside the defensive tackles since twenty twenty one. Now, of course,
you know Jalen Carter, but a crazy stat that Dallas
was able to move the ball like that on Philadelphia
(01:35:18):
Okay post game Jerry Jones with just an insane quote.
He was being asked about the defense following Micah Parsons.
And of course, you know Sam Williams, the the former
L s U Tiger who has been you know, up
(01:35:39):
and down with his NFL career. You know he's been
he's been in trouble for some off the field conduct
played last night. And this was Jerry Jones's comments on
Sam Williams.
Speaker 12 (01:35:54):
After he drives you know in this, I mean, how.
Speaker 4 (01:36:00):
Do you congregate all that?
Speaker 2 (01:36:02):
How do you now?
Speaker 12 (01:36:03):
Well, first of all, I'm saying that he is as
which is more often the case than not of this
shot sounds a little hollow, but he does in his.
Speaker 5 (01:36:17):
Maturing and he is the what was he going sixty six?
Was he going sixty six miles now last year?
Speaker 6 (01:36:28):
No?
Speaker 12 (01:36:28):
This year?
Speaker 5 (01:36:29):
So he's thirty four miles an hour less than this
year than it was that year at nine, age sixty six.
Speaker 6 (01:36:35):
So that's improvement.
Speaker 1 (01:36:37):
Oh my goodness, that's a real quote from Jerry Jones.
He was only speeding, but he was he was speeding,
but he was speeding thirty miles per hour less than
he was last time he got caught speed You ever
tried that one? I have not. Officer. I was going,
this is your second ticket citations, Officer, I was going
three miles per hour slower this time. Yeah, but you're
(01:36:59):
still eleven miles over the speed limit here or whatever.
Sam Williams was in. But that's an all time Jerry
Jones quote before you there on Sam Williams, who, hey,
he's a good he's a good football player to not
play at all last season for Dallas and desperately gonna
need Williams or Dante Fowler or whoever is back to
the step up in place of Micah Parsons.
Speaker 2 (01:37:20):
Can the Cowboys are The Cowboys are maturing or has
Jerry put it maturing maturing? They got better running back
play last night than last year. They only fumbled one time.
Speaker 1 (01:37:29):
Oh yeah, yeah, there you go, only only one time
as an improvement. I mean, ja Wanta Williams did look
decent here. But I'm telling you Cowboy fans don't don't
get any hope yet. Just don't don't buy into the
hope that Jerry Jones is selling. Now. You do, got
New York next week, You got Chicago in week three.
You could be two and one going in the Green Bay.
(01:37:51):
But that might be a big night for Micah Parsons.
That'll be a fun one. As if you didn't need
any more hype between Bay and Dallas. Now you're throwing
the Micah Parsons straight into that real quick. Jay Kerman,
NFL Week one, what games are you looking forward to?
I know you have the Commanders and the Giants at noon,
(01:38:13):
then I'm sure that'll capture your viewing. But what NFL
matchups you're looking forward to in the opening weekend the
NFL season.
Speaker 2 (01:38:20):
Sure well, Ravens Bills on Sunday Night absolutely a marquee matchup.
You think of Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen with their
teams kind of right on that doorstep. Is this the
year that one of those two teams takes down Kansas
City in the AFC? Time will tell Lions Packers pretty
big showdown. What kind of Lions offense do we see
post Ben Johnson? What kind of Packers defense do we
(01:38:42):
see with Micah Parsons in the place if he plays?
And then, for a little bit more twisted reason, Steelers Jets,
you've got a double revenge game for the quarterbacks. Right,
Aaron Rodgers faces his old team, the Jets. Justin Fields
faces his old team this Steelers. That game is going
to be ugly, probably defense dominated, probably lost rather than one.
(01:39:07):
But hey, somebody is going to have sweet revenge from
the quarterback position in that one.
Speaker 1 (01:39:11):
Can you call it a revenge game when when both
quarterbacks sucked with those two respective teams, I mean revenge
game for the teams against those quarterbacks. So who's skitting
revenge here? They both were terrible with their teams. I
know Fields made the playoffs with the Steelers, but it
wasn't like he was, you know, setting the world on fire.
I think the Bills are my pick to win it
all this season. I'm like in I'm li like in
(01:39:32):
Buffalo Philadelphia again. Okay, we'll be back to prought up
today's program after this
