Speaker 1 (00:00):
The AP Top twenty five preseason college football poll came
out yesterday, and and I did say, we've got a
couple of baseball notes.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
I'm gonna get to them in a minute, but I
couldn't help but notice.
Speaker 1 (00:12):
That, in conjunction with the AP Top twenty five college
football preseason poll, ESPN did its preseason SP plus rankings. Now,
the only reason why I bring this up is because
this is different than the AP Top twenty five or
(00:33):
the Coach's preseason Top twenty five, because that in four
point fifty gets you something in Starbucks, maybe a little
more of these days. That's why they just fired their
CEO and hired the CEO from Chipotle to be the
new CEO of Starbucks to try to turn that around,
get their stock numbers back up. But the difference is
in this SP plus ranking. They don't do it top
(00:57):
twenty five. They rank all one, one hundred and thirty
four teams, every single team that plays Division one FBS
football Football Bowl Subdivision FBS, so all one hundred and
thirty four are rated, and the top part of it
(01:21):
mirrors the balloting polls like Georgia's number one, Ohio State's
number two, and Oregan's number three.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
Now there's a little bit different by one tenth of
a point.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
Alabama, not Texas is number four, and then Texas is
number five in the sp rankings, so that that's the
offensive sp plus along with the defensive sp plus and
the special teams. So Georgia's number one with a thirty
four point two, Ohio State number two and a thirty
(01:54):
point eight, and then Oregon State twenty nine, Alabama twenty
seven point eight, Texas twenty seven point seven. So forty
seven percent of these teams, according to ESPN analytics, have
at least a five percent chance of reaching the college
football playoff. So these they're based on these factors returning production,
(02:16):
recent recruiting, and recent history. So how good have you
been recently, who do you have coming back? How good
are the players replacing those who don't have coming back?
Those kinds of things, and then they feed it all
into into a computer in the formula and it spits
it out. So as I mentioned George's number one, the
rest of the top ten is Ohio State two, Georgia,
(02:37):
Oregon three, Alabama for Texas five, and then the rest
Penn State, Michigan, Ole, Miss, Notre Dame in LSU in
the second ten, Oklahoma's thirteen, Texas A and M is fourteen,
Oklahoma State is twenty. K State is seventeen, by the way,
and then if you go on down then this is
why I said this goes beyond twenty five. So this
is what I was looking at. SMU is just out
(03:00):
of it at twenty seven. Out of the what would
be a top twenty five new Big twelve team Arizonia
at twenty eight. Iowa State is thirty, Kansas is thirty two,
TCU is thirty eighth, North Carolina is forty, Texas Tech
is forty one, Arkansas is forty four, Baylor is fifty three,
(03:24):
UTSA is fifty four. These are the SP plus rankings.
So if you go further on down the list, I'm
looking for Texas State number eighty six according to these
SP rankings, and going further I guess I'm meant to
look a little further up and find Colorado State, who
is the season opening opponent for Texas. But I'm not
(03:49):
seeing them. I can't believe they'd be way down the list,
but I'm looking here.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
This one hundred. Wow, they are far down the list.
Speaker 1 (03:57):
They are number one hundred is State my alma matern
Noor Texas, not to sporty one oh five on that
sort of thing. And just let you know dead last
one thirty four.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
Ul Monroe.
Speaker 1 (04:15):
That's right, the fourth non conference opponent for Texas. They
are Division one FPS there not playing an FCS team,
but it is the number, the number one thirty four
out of one thirty four.
Speaker 3 (04:32):
If you if you have friends or family that have
been bugging you about going to the Texas football games
and are in the same camp of so does does.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
Archie start this year? Is Archie gonna play in March?
Speaker 3 (04:43):
That's the game to tell him to go to because
he will probably be playing in the third or fourth
quarter in that one. And for context, with these rankings,
I always find it curious to compare them to last year.
So the last year's final SP plus preseason rankings, Yeah,
top four or Georgia, Ale State, yep, Michigan Alabama, so
two other four made the playoff. He had Texas at
(05:06):
nine and then Washington at seventeen. Also had Clemson at
seven who went nine and four. So a little bit
of contact.
Speaker 1 (05:13):
For those yeah to these range just to understand that, Okay,
a couple of baseball notes. Rangers tough loss for them
last night against the Boston Red Sox, will try again
tonight as they continue to fall further off the pace.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
Now, the Astros remained red hot.
Speaker 1 (05:28):
I think they've won nine consecutive starts by Fromer Valdez
or at least six consecutive starts that they've won.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
And then.
Speaker 1 (05:41):
Mookie Bett's returned last night. His first at bat, it
looked like he hadn't had an at bat in sixty
days if he saw it. He swung and missed on
strike three and tumbled over and fell down out of
the batter's box like, oh boys, he rusty.
Speaker 2 (05:56):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (05:57):
Came up next inning, next at bat, two innings there,
hit a home run and then he drove in another
run with an RBI single, So he looks to be back. Also,
Clayton Kershaw pitched well last night, definitely his best outing
since he'd been back. But they but they are losing
River Ryan to Tommy John surgery, so they've lost him.
They do expect to get Walker Bueller back this week,
(06:19):
so we'll have him that I have him as well.
But Astros look really good. And speaking of the Astros,
you remember when Billy Wagner pitched for the Astros. Will
his son had his major league debut for the Toronto
Blue Jays last night and got hits in his first
three at bats in the game. So a lot of
these younger guys, they're you know, they're showing out, making
(06:42):
a difference there. All right, we'll be back to wrap
up today's program on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the
zone of the iHeartRadio AM
