Speaker 1 (00:00):
We continue here on the program with information that you
probably if you're into the band five Finger Death Punch
would want to know. This comes up a week from today.
They're playing at their Germaine Insurance Amphitheater, and throughout the
course of the week you've had a chance to try
(00:22):
to win tickets to it. But because what you do
is you enter the designated keyword at am thirteen under
the Zone dot com for your chance to win today's
keyword punch Punch. That's your keyword at am thirteen under
the Zone dot com if you're interested in winning a
pair of tickets to seeing five Finger Death Punch one
week from tonight at the Germania Insurance Amphitheater. So there's
(00:48):
that to keep in mind. On our text line, we
always offer that up to you as well, so if
you have a question something you need to get to us,
or something as simple as the person who called me
a coffee criminal, that's okay, I get it, I understand.
Let's hear some more from Logrorn's head football coach Steve Sarkegan.
(01:09):
This is from the SEC teleconference the conference call, and
sark was asked coming off of that, you know Mountain
Top experience, so to speak, at the Big House and
handling Michigan the way they did in winning thirty one
to twelve. How important is a week like this coming
(01:31):
off of that You're facing a G five opponent and
an in state opponent at that in UTSA. How important
is a week like this coming off of the week
like they had last week?
Speaker 2 (01:42):
Well, I think this game, to me is about maturity
as a football team. You know that we understand we
have a formula for success and the way we prepare,
the way we practice, the right mental intensity we have
to have, and then ultimately our ability to perform on Saturday.
You know, anytime you have a high like we had
(02:03):
on the road, that that challenges the maturity to get
back to work and too to have the right mental
intensity to focus into and to prepare the way we
want to prepare.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
And so far I've seen I've seen that.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
You know, like I've said, we've had great leadership on
this team throughout all off season. It hasn't disappointed through
the first two weeks of the regular season. And like
I like, I challenged them, I said, hey, this is
this is a leadership week. You know that our leaders
have got to step up. We've got to make sure
we're holding everybody accountable to do things the right way,
and and and then then we'll find out Saturday night
(02:38):
what that looks like. But yeah, to your point, I
agree this this week is going to really measure the maturity,
in my opinion, of this football team.
Speaker 1 (02:47):
In measuring the ability not only the ability and the
skill set, but the production and effort of his pass
rush so far. Sark was asked, how do you evaluate
his team's pass rush through the first two ball games.
Speaker 3 (03:04):
I thought we did a nice job Saturday.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
You know, both teams we played the first two weeks
really were committed to running the football. I think, you know, obviously,
when you lose you know, two NFL draft pick into
your defensive lineman, you lose your starting inside linebacker, you
know people are gonna see hit that run defense is
still as good as it was, And I think we're
finding out we're pretty good run stopping defense. So I
(03:29):
think we'll start to see a little bit more of
the passing game. But that being said, I do think
we affected the quarterback much better Saturday. Where we've got
to improve is a getting them on the ground and
then B squeeze in the pocket. You know, too many
times we were letting the quarterback get out of the
pocket and extend plays and ultimately that led to the
touchdown there at the end of the ball game. So
(03:52):
we've got to we've got to Yeah, we want to
create the pressure, but we don't want to let them
escape the pocket.
Speaker 1 (03:56):
Okay, And then a couple of questions about this matchup
and you know, playing in state opponents overall. Sark was
asked about what are the benefits, if there are, and
what are the drawbacks of playing in state non conference opponents. Obviously,
(04:19):
they only have one in state conference opponent. Those are
the guys who are in college station and they'll see
them two days after Thanksgiving. But what about the non
conference opponents, What are the drawbacks, what are the what
are the advantages of playing in state opponents for non conference.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
Well, I think, first of all, it's good for the state.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
I think it's great for that that we do play,
you know, teams in our own state. I think it's
great for their brand. I think it's good for our brand.
I think it's great for a really good environment at
dk R. But one thing I'll say is about all
those teams.
Speaker 3 (04:59):
You just you just rattle.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
They're all dangerous and this week's no different. You know,
Coach Trailor's done a great job with UTSA. They're a
dangerous football team. They've won a bunch of games, they
know how to win. They believe in their style and
and and the way they play the game. So and
that we see what Texas State's doing now and what
Sam Houston's done, and you know, you TEP with a
new coach and what they're going to start to build.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
So these are these.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
Are always challenging games, right because of the psyche of
a player. If you start to prepare based on the
helmet or the uniform the other team wears, that's how
you get beat. You know, you've got to prepare to
our standard within our organization, not to what you think
of the opponent one way or the other. And I
think that's that's about the discipline side of what we do.
(05:43):
But hey, I do I think it is good for
the state of Texas that that we play, you know,
an in state team every year.
Speaker 1 (05:50):
Well it's interesting that he talked about that about every
year because if you look if you look at the
log Orange future schedules, you're going to find it dotted
with in state opponents now to be certain, they opened
twenty twenty five in the Horseshoe. That's the season opener,
(06:11):
unlike this year and last year where they had a
home opener against a G five non conference opponents and
then last year went to Alabama and then this year
went to Michigan. Next year, there's not a warm up game,
if you will. They owe straight to Columbus. They play
Ohio State on August thirtieth, then they come back for
what right now are two non conference game schedule San
(06:34):
Jose State followed by UTEP. So that's a non conference
in state opponent. And incidentally, I'm kind of expecting them
to have to add another non conference opponent because the
SEC hasn't put it this way. They haven't made it official,
but I think most folks are expecting the SEC to
stick with an eight game conference schedule. If that's the case,
(06:57):
then you've got to have four non conference games. They've
got three going through the end of the decade. So
they open with Ohio State and then they have San
Jose State and the home opener, and then they have
UTIP so it's U tap in twenty twenty five, in
twenty twenty six, they open with Texas State, so it's
interesting you mentioned it. Then they have the return game
(07:19):
of Ohio State back in Austin. Then they have UTSA again.
UTSA is on the schedule in the even numbered years
throughout the course of the rest of this decade, so
it's Texas State, followed by Ohio State, then UTSA. In
twenty twenty seven, they have the return game with Michigan
at a home on September eleventh, and they have a
(07:39):
game with UTEP on the eighteenth. They don't have a
game prior to that schedule yet, but they probably will
in twenty twenty eight. Again, UTSA would be here in
twenty twenty eight. In twenty twenty nine, ul Amazon the
schedule again and they have UTEP again, twenty thirty UTSA,
twenty thirty one UTEP. So all the way through the
(08:00):
year twenty thirty one they have an in state at
least one non conference opponent. In twenty twenty six they
have both Texas State and UTSA, but and there could
be more than one later on as they have.
Speaker 3 (08:14):
To add games.
Speaker 1 (08:15):
But they have won right now throughout every year or
the rest of the decade. In fact, all the way
up through twenty thirty one. So Sark was asked to
what extent is he involved in the scheduling of games,
especially on down the road, because we know the ones like,
for example, this Michigan series was scheduled before Sark was
ever the.
Speaker 3 (08:33):
Head coach Steve So.
Speaker 1 (08:36):
He was asked to what extent is he involved in
the scheduling of this and does he really advocate for
playing in state opponents for the non conference portion of
the season. Is that something that he's in favor of
doing regularly?
Speaker 2 (08:54):
Well, you know, so much of like the schedule we're
playing now, I really wasn't as involved in. You know,
a lot of this stuff, like I said, is scheduled
pretty far out. You know, as we look down the road,
you know, things will come across my desk and sounds
like a good idea, not a good idea. And that's
where you know, Chris del Connie and I kind of
work really well together on just you know, what is
(09:16):
what is our future schedule looking like? And conference schedule
and different things, and you know what potentially could happen
with the SEC and.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
Eight games nine games.
Speaker 2 (09:24):
There's a lot of factors that go on to go
into this, but I do think it's a good idea
to play the in state games, you know. I mean again,
I think it's great for their brand, it's good for
our brand.
Speaker 3 (09:34):
Like I said, it creates a great environment in dk R.
So I am an advocate of that.
Speaker 1 (09:40):
Okay, all right, there it is sarks about playing those
non conference games against in state opponents. All right, we'll
be back to wrap up Hour number two. By the way,
the man who's coming on after is Andrew Zimmel with
his self described zimlaur here at the Craig Way Show
from four to five one, when Cam and I are
headed over to Pluckers's Texas State grat so he told me,
(10:01):
he said on the show last week, how pumped he
is about the fact that Texas State will actually play
its first ever game against Texas in DKR Texas Memorial
Stadium in two years.
Speaker 3 (10:11):
He can hardly wait.
Speaker 1 (10:13):
All right, we'll be back to wrap up the hour
on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
