Speaker 1 (00:00):
We continue on here on this Wednesday afternoon, We obviously
had the chance to talk some football with Andrew Alligretta,
the voice of the Vanderbilt Commodore's The log warns, get
ready to take on this Vanderbilt team. As as you heard,
that's feeling pretty good about themselves at five and two,
and you know they've got the running back. We talked
(00:21):
about Cedric Alexander that Cam and I both had a
chance to call games involving Cedric playing for LBJ, and
while he was playing at LBJ, uh he he had
a tremendous career and became the aisd's all time leading rusher,
and a lot of his feats and accomplishments were kind
(00:42):
of overlooked. There were other running backs who across the
state were having huge freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior years
except for Jane Blue, because Jane Blue skipped his senior
year of high school to go on to Texas and
but he had really loaded a lot of hay in
the bar and his freshman, sophomore, and junior years. And
(01:06):
Jayden started off the season really really good and had
had a couple of big performances, certainly against Michigan and
had a couple of other big games. Then of course
had the two fumbles you know in the game against
Mississippi States last week, caught a touchdown pass, caught targets
out of the backfield, did not carry the ball. But
(01:26):
sark could mentioned this press conference there's going to be
more of a concerted effort to get him the football. Meanwhile,
as he processed all of his his things, good and
bad and getting ready for another week, he had the
opportunity to sit down with our man, Will Matthews are
sideline reported on the Long Horn Radio Network. Gets a
chance to sit down and visit with these guys.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
We know what happened, we know how things went.
Speaker 3 (01:51):
How do you bounce back? What does that look like
for you?
Speaker 4 (01:55):
Just no reverting back to our preparation and leaning on
each other. We know this team has a lot of
a lot of fight, and you know, we we trust
each other and we trusting the coaching staff. So it's
just a matter of us getting back, getting back to
work and focusing on uh a task of hand, which
is vander built.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
And you know, RB Rooms, It's it's been difficult. A
lot of guys have gone down. I mean there's been
some nix and bruises all around with everybody. What's the
vibe in there right now? You guys have been so
strong throughout the season in the last couple of years
as well.
Speaker 3 (02:25):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (02:25):
Man, the injuries definitely have gotten us a lot closer,
Especially me. I have to take a lot of took
out on the leadership role a lot more since I'm
older guy in the room. But you know, we we
have a lot of guys that could play in that room,
and it's just you know, me trying to lead, do
things the right way and bring the younger guys along.
And you know, I know, I know those guys could play,
(02:46):
but you know, it's just us staying on top of
our game, you know, to make sure that you know
when someone do go down that the next the next
man up doesn't have a big drop off.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
And when you you're walking into these next I mean
like no matter what happens, the lost comes. Uh, well
we all did the next one. And that's just with football.
Tell us about the mentality moving on to this next one.
Speaker 4 (03:08):
Just going on and know every week. We know we
lost the old U last year, you know, and after
that we went on to win the conference and we
went to the playoffs, so you know, we know that
we're capable, capable of you know, going to the playoffs.
But you know, like we said, just take one week
at a time and you know, just focus on, you
(03:29):
know what what we're doing that week.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
Then when you talk about focusing on the things that
you have to do as a team, let's let's zoom
into you what what are some things that you're working
on for this week to get ready for this game.
Speaker 4 (03:45):
Mainly just making sure I play fast, you know, being
more detailed of my game, uh, not taking plays off.
That's that's really the main theme. So you know, I
feel like when I'm you know, very detailed and I
and I play fast, that you know I play pretty well.
So you know, those are the main things that I'm
focusing on as you know, each day to get better.
Speaker 1 (04:06):
Yeah, he's been just he's real upfront, matter of fact
about what he needs to do to be better. I
mean there was all that attention and focus on him
after the two fumbles, and Sark has said it was
not a purposeful move, not to have him run the ball,
but to throw the ball to him. It's just that
(04:27):
one of his better gifts is being able to catch
the ball out of the backfield, which he did for
the touchdown for the long worn touchdown, but the second one.
But I agree with Sark's statement that they have to
do more with him to not make it look like
he is only in the game to catch the ball
(04:49):
out of the backfield. There has to be a versatility
element there. And he ran the ball, and we were
told before the season he would run the ball some
between the tackles, and he has done that a little bit.
You know, losing CJ. Baxter made a big difference there.
But we've seen you know, not only not only Blue
(05:12):
run the ball between the tackles, but obviously Trey Wisner
and we know Jared Gibson's going to do so as well.
And this Saturday against Vanderbilt, that has to be one
of the key things is going to be ball controlled.
Because Vanderbilt proved in its win over Alabama they can
control the clock keep the ball out of the hands
of the Texas offense.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
It's going to be difficult for the long run to
do things. I mean, it was like.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
What forty two minutes of possession time or something like
that for Vanderbilt and that win over Alabama.
Speaker 3 (05:41):
So the long words can't allow that to happen.
Speaker 1 (05:42):
They've got to be on.
Speaker 3 (05:45):
The mark in terms of ball control.
Speaker 1 (05:47):
Now, They're never going to turn down an easy, quick
touchdown if they can get it. But the point is
get the ball back in the hands of the offense.
Don't to have the defense not allow the Vanderbilt offense
to get into a rhythm of being able to run
and pass and run the clock. Get it back to
the offense, and then the offense move the ball down
the field however long it takes, long drive, short drive, whatever,
(06:09):
and have it in the end zone for points. So
there's some thoughts on that as we draw a little
bit closer. You know, it's interesting in discussing the injury thing.
I don't know how many folks have heard about this.
The quarterback for Indiana, Curtis Rorke, got hurt in the
second half of the game against Nebraska and hurt his thumb,
(06:33):
and of course Indiana is seven to zero.
Speaker 3 (06:37):
They've drawn a lot of attention.
Speaker 1 (06:38):
ESPN College Game Day is going to be there. But
Rourke injured his thumb. He had surgery on the thumb
on his right thumb on Monday, so I thought normally,
if you have end season surgery like that.
Speaker 3 (06:52):
You're going to be done. Well. Not only is he
not done, he's listed as being.
Speaker 1 (07:00):
Possibly probable or possibly at the very least questionable for
the game next Saturday at Michigan State for Indiana, and
even is still kept on the injury report as doubtful
for this week's game against Washington, not completely out of
the conversation. He was listed as being out indefinitely after
injuring the thumb, but they said they expect him back
(07:23):
at some point during the season. That's pretty remarkable stuff
there for a quarterback who's having a really good season
on what has become a pretty remarkable football team. So
there's some things there. He's a transfer from Ohio six
year college football, has completed seventy five percent of his
passes at IU, fifteen touchdowns, three interceptions. The Indiana offense
(07:47):
is number one in the nation, scoring offense just under
forty nine points per game. That's the guy, that's the team.
He's coached by, the guy that came in from James Madison,
Kurt Signetti, and Rourke was one of twenty seven transfers
twenty seven transfers to Indiana. That's amazing to consider that
(08:08):
you could cobble together the culture and the chemistry that
quickly with twenty seven transfers. Pretty impressed by it anyway,
all right, coming up, we'll get ready to wrap up
today's edition of the program. A reminder we have long
worn weekly with Coach Sart the recording coming up at
six o'clock at Pluckers the West Campus location in Austin.
(08:30):
We record that from six o'clock till seven o'clock. And
let's see, we'll tell you about our special guests coming
up as well.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
We'll do that.
Speaker 1 (08:42):
We mentioned him earlier, but we'll do it again when
we continue on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone
and where you always listen to us for free on
the iHeartRadio app.
