Speaker 1 (00:00):
We begin the third hour of the second hour, excuse
me of this program with some football conversation coming up
in a few minutes. Greg Tapper, managing editor of Dave
Campbells Texas Football Magazine. So we'll hear more from Loghorn's
linebacker Leonga Lafowl this hour as well. We'll have some
more on that four o'clock hour. Neil Price, play by

(00:21):
play voice of the Mississippi State Bulldogs, will be with us.
We have all of that coming up. All right, So
there's two weeks, three weeks, excuse me in the books
for the NFL. I asked you yesterday and I threw
in several names that you several team names that you
cameraon and ask you know which ones surprised you? Or

(00:44):
I asked you which performances surprised you the most. You
surprised me. I think with your answer of the Texans
allowing the Vikings to score thirty four points and summarily
thump them thirty four to seven on that you were
more surprised by that than the Carolina Panthers getting their

(01:05):
first win of the season. Well, I think the Raiders
just a bad football team. Okay, all right, you were
more surprised by that than the Rams beating the forty
nine ers, and the forty nine ers aren't a bad
football team, but they are one.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
And two, and they're also without Christian McCaffrey, who really
completely changes that offense when he's on the field. No
Deebo Samuel and if the Niners team that when they
don't have their stars, they are very you know, it's
kind of like kryptonite, right, Superman's kryptonite, that's their kryptite.
Is just whenever they don't have McCaffrey or Deebo or
Ayuk or whoever, they seem to really struggle and curious.

(01:39):
You know, we've had a lot of injuries this season.
You know, we got the news McCaffrey going to Germany
to get a look at his achilles. That's never good
in terms of like things that happened during an NFL
season and ranking like, what's the worst thing that could
happen finding out your star running back is going to
Germany to get an extra low on his achilles, probably

(02:01):
near the top of the list. So Nighters fans, not
feeling too good about that, came away with a little
bit more injuries from that loss. Over the Rams. So
we talked about the Year from Hell teams. I kind
of thought maybe it would be San Francisco in the
preseason because you had you holding out, you had Trent
Williams holding out, the McCaffrey stuff, and they got those

(02:24):
contracts figured out. But now it does look like it
could possibly be the Year from Hell because one and
two the Rams are right there in Seattle, by the way.
Three and oh is three and oh and no one's
talking about them.

Speaker 1 (02:36):
Yeah, that's true, and we'll find out more about them.
What is it on the doubleheader Monday night football next
week when they play the Lions?

Speaker 2 (02:44):
So, by the way, because we discussed why is they're
a doubleheader, it's because the Manning cast is off. So
they decided, Okay, when the Maning cast isn't on, we're
gonna have two football games.

Speaker 1 (02:54):
Because it takes two for anybody to accept it on
a Monday night when you don't have the Manning cast.
So maybe there there you go. I understand what you're
saying about the forty nine ers. Name those players again
that you said that were.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
Out McCaffrey, yep, Deebo, Samuel or the two. And then
there was I was there he was there. They were
missing an offensive lineman, correct, and then didn't someone tear
their achilles game might have, but.

Speaker 1 (03:20):
Notice you didn't mention any defensive players, and they gave
up twenty seven points to a Rams team that did
not have Pukakua and did not have Cooper Cup. In fact,
the Rams have already said Cooper Cooper Cup is out
for the Bears game, even though they put him on
I R to do that. Their defense has become vulnerable.
That's what the thing. I mean. You had you had

(03:41):
Matthew Stafford throwing to to two at well and and
some of those other guys.

Speaker 2 (03:50):
Uh, George kill didn't play either as well.

Speaker 1 (03:52):
Yeah, okay, yeah the way, and Kittle was out. He's
on my fantasy games. I had to, you know, I
had to do something something without him. But anyway, their
defense became kind of vulnerable as well in that football game.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
So what was the score? At one point?

Speaker 1 (04:07):
They were up twenty one to seven in the third yeah,
I mean seven points through three quarters is and then
pretty good, they completely imploded in the fourth quarter.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
Well, he had some they gave really cost the offensive penalties, correct,
and then Jake Moody missed the fifty five yarder, and but.

Speaker 1 (04:25):
They gave up some deep shots for a second Aarreya's
supposed to be pretty good. They didn't get Listen, the
Rams offensive line is not good, and they got Matthew
Stafford a time or two, but they couldn't get him enough.
They didn't get him enough pressure on him, so he
was able to find some targets. Stafford maybe getting long
in the tooth, but if you give him enough time,

(04:45):
he can pick you apart.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
Oh, he's surgical. He's surgical. He's I mean, in terms
of quarterback play this year, Craig, it's been pretty awful.
Kurt Warner are over Sunday about how pitiful the quarterback
performance has been this season. But Matthew Stafford, I think
he's been one of the more fun quarterbacks to watch
this season because he's playing at the top of his game.

(05:09):
And it stinks because you know, Greg is a Rams fan.
The old line's not healthy. It's not no Puka, no Cup.
Yet he his level of plate is still at the
top of the league right now. I mean, he's looked
better I think than Mahomes so far. Mahomes has had
some really poor interceptions. I know, they're three and oh
but I think Stafford maybe Mays may have a case

(05:30):
up there with sam Donold, which I can't believe I
just said for best quarterback in the league. I'll get
I'll give you one other one, gosh Allen, Yeah, yeah,
that's true. Alan. He's probably MVP favorite right now. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (05:42):
He looked really really good for Buffalo in that win
over Jacksonville. So yeah, that's Buffalo looks good.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
Yeah. Now he's plus two hundred favorite to win MVP.
So it tells you what they think.

Speaker 1 (05:53):
They play the Ravens on Sunday night.

Speaker 2 (05:56):
It'll be fun.

Speaker 1 (05:57):
Yeah, that'll be a fun one to watch. All right, upnag,
we'll talk from college and high school football.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
In the state of Texas.

Speaker 1 (06:02):
We'll visit a Greg Tepper, managing editor of Dave Campbell's
Texas Football magazine. That's next. Well, continue on Sports Radio
AM thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio app.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
