Speaker 1 (00:15):
He's going to Tampa.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
It's not in the Wolds.
Speaker 3 (00:41):
Texas is going back to the Final four since two
thousand and three. Oh my gosh, does it feel like
a great day in Austin, Texas. Hey, it's Andrew Zimmel
filling in for Craig Way as the UH six man
from sands on you gears you up for a Final
four showdown with South Carolina. Fifty eight to forty seven
(01:04):
is your final from last night's game. As the Longhorns
hold on to beat TCU. They own that overall series
a lot too a little obviously, and we were talking
about it nauseum yesterday to the point where I had
people texting me being like, Hey, is it really this
big of a deal? Do we really should we care
(01:24):
this much? And I said, yes, you should, because not
only is this the type of team that is going
to make a deep run. We said this all the
way back in October, that this is the type of
team that can make a deep, deep run, but this
is a special team with a special group of players.
This is a special team of a special group of
players that obviously like each other, that obviously are playing
(01:46):
as hard as any team is played for any college
coach in the country. And Vic Shaeffer is putting himself
he already was in that conversation as one of the
best women's coaches in college basketball, but he's now in
the conversation of one of the best coaches in college sports.
And it's exactly where he should be, and it's exactly
(02:07):
where we should be. Final Four this week in Tampa Bay,
and yeah, we are excited.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
We'll talk about the game.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
We will talk to Craig way here in about seventeen
minutes as Craig travels again to now cover more women's hoops. Obviously,
everybody's super pumped. And then Texas Baseball tonight at the
Dish against Texas State, a matchup between one of the
best teams in college baseball, arguably the best team in
(02:37):
the SEC and the Longhorns and a Texas State team
that gives it. They're all every time they play Texas.
I say, it's the same way that when you're playing
the defending Super Bowl champions, It's the same way when
you're playing the New York Yankees, you are going to
get the absolute best of your opponent. When the Longhorns
(02:58):
are playing on the field, every team looks at this
game against Texas as the biggest game on their schedule.
Every team comes in and says, we have to knock
off ut So you're always getting your opponent's very best,
and that is how you end up being one of
the best teams in the SEC is by consistently getting
(03:19):
the absolute best from your opponents. We also have NFL
rule changes. NFL owners kind of split, actually not kind
of split on the tush push. It's we've heard from coaches,
We've heard from players. Owners are split on it. This
seems like there's a lot to do about nothing, But
(03:40):
then you consider that the Philadelphia Eagles push pushed their
way to a Super Bowl win, a push pushed their
way through the NFC and bullied teams to win a championship,
and I think a lot of teams are sick of
getting bullied. So we'll hear from some of the coaches there.
And then Colbakoy The Clean Pockets put out an episode
(04:01):
this morning talking to the head coach of the Texas Longhorn,
Steve Sarkisian.
Speaker 2 (04:06):
They talk about a lot.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
Obviously one of the most winningest quarterbacks in college football history,
and the coach of the Texas Longhorns are going to
talk about the guy with the pedigree name Arch Manning.
I thought it was interesting. I thought that they gave
a lot of insight on the development of Arch, gave
a lot of insight on the development of this team.
The transfer portal obviously a point of contention across college athletics.
(04:30):
Sarkisian gives his take as well, But let's talk college hoops.
Let's talk Texas women. Fifty eight to forty seven. Was
the win last night, and the players who had to
step up, the players who had to perform well, they did,
and Madison Booker and Rory Harmony they combined for thirty
one points. Kyla Odin Oldacre added nine to help the
Longhorns advance to their fourth Final four in program history,
(04:53):
the first under Vick Schaeffer. Taylor Jones opened the scoring
for both teams in the first period with the layup
in the paint fall by guards Rory Harmon sinking back
to back jumpers. At that point, you felt really good.
You led TCU seven to one halfway through the first quarter.
To close out the period, the Longhorns showcased their defensive strength,
forcing the horn Frogs into eight turnovers. It marked the
(05:16):
twenty sixth time that Texas has held an opponent to
single digits in the first quarter thirteen to nine lead.
At this point, I'm texting all of my friends saying, Hey,
put the game on, Get the game on. This is
a defensive masterclass from one of the best defensive minded
coaches in college hoops. Starting the second period, Shay Holly
sink a mid range jumper extended the Texas lead to
(05:37):
fifteen to nine. To close out the first half, the
Longhorns limited the Frogs, as, shooting only twenty five percent
from the field. Harmon led the team of eleven points
and two steals, but Texas was only up by two
going in to halftime. A lot of people online were
saying it should have been more. Texas did not capitalize
on opportunities in that first half. It could have been
(05:57):
a double digit lead to go in leading by two.
Speaker 2 (06:00):
In a halftime.
Speaker 3 (06:01):
The second half, Taylor Jones scores a running layup to
put text up twenty five to twenty one. After forcing
TSU's third in down violation, the Longhorns were able to
expand their lead to thirty five to thirty one at
the three fifteen mark. During the final minutes, Jordan Lee
sank a three pointer, followed by Madison Booker converting and
and one.
Speaker 2 (06:21):
It sounded something like.
Speaker 4 (06:22):
This, Lee, it's to the left winging now the Booker
off a screen left baseline jumper god.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
And Sheee's fouled cool as the other side of the pillow.
Madison Booker converted the end one to go up forty
two to thirty three going into the fourth quarter. Longhorns
were on a ten to two run to start the
final period, and this might be the play of the game.
Kayla Olddecker sank a contested midrange jumper. Moments later, she
(06:48):
stole the ind down pass.
Speaker 5 (06:50):
Dcun him down the ball.
Speaker 4 (06:52):
Haylee Van Lift lops it up top for Prince stole
it from her, taken away by Old Laker.
Speaker 1 (06:56):
Here's Kyla driving in and scores.
Speaker 3 (06:59):
She can verts the and one free throw to extend
a forty seven to thirty six lead for Texas. Longhorns
went on to secure their spot in the final for
the first time since the two three season, but that
Old Acre Coast to coast score was the talk of
the town, and it started in the post game. Here's
(07:19):
our guy Craig Way with Madison Booker talking about that play.
Speaker 4 (07:24):
Madison Booker, you have to help me here. How many
times have you seen have you seen Kyla make that
move that she did with the steal and outrun somebody
like Sedona Prince to the end and lay it in.
Speaker 6 (07:36):
I mean, it's not my first time. Is your first
time I seeing it? I feel like you've seen this before.
Speaker 4 (07:39):
I've seen, like I said, I told Shay, I've seen
a lot of practices, but I didn't remember seeing her
make a move quite like that.
Speaker 5 (07:45):
She does.
Speaker 7 (07:46):
You know she does, No, she does.
Speaker 6 (07:47):
You must have missed it. You must have been going
so quick and she was going. I already made the
lay up. But I am not surprised when this is
I'm not surprised with my team, especially Kylo. I mean
she's a dog.
Speaker 3 (07:55):
She is a dog, fast coast to coast the layup.
Maybe it was a little awkward, but it got the
job done. She got asked about it in the post
game to describe the play.
Speaker 8 (08:08):
Quite a slip of in the moment on me. It
was just an intense moment for me, and my team
came and just surrounded me. A lot of positive energy,
so I had to smile, how to break the smile.
Speaker 1 (08:19):
But honestly, coach.
Speaker 5 (08:20):
Gets on the spots a lot.
Speaker 8 (08:22):
Pretty much everyone but the fots the most to deny it.
Since our guards always worked so hard to deny the ball,
I saw that as an opportunity and just went on
with it, got the ball and just made sure I
didn't blow the layup. And I'll.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
Just don't blow the layup.
Speaker 3 (08:36):
But you heard a little bit in that about how, yeah, okay,
Vick Schaeffer is.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
Kind of the engine behind us.
Speaker 3 (08:43):
Good defensive, grinded out defense, and that's how you win
games like this, holding your opponent to limited shooting percentages.
The horn Frogs shot twenty seven percent from the field,
twenty percent from downtown and Hayley van Lin the engine.
Seven turnovers by Van Lyft, so Vick Schaefer might have
(09:05):
had arguably the quote of the NCAA tournament. He got
asked post game by ESPN, and this is what it
sounded like.
Speaker 2 (09:13):
I know I'm not their world, but they are my world.
Speaker 9 (09:17):
They say, you know, it's not who you are, it's
what you do.
Speaker 1 (09:20):
This is who I am. This is what I've done
for all my life.
Speaker 9 (09:25):
My family has suffered at times because I put so
much into this. My wonderful wife, I've got two beautiful kids,
but this is what I do and who I am,
and you invest so much, You invest your heart and
soul into these kids. You want it so badly for them,
but sometimes it's hard to show them, you know, especially
(09:45):
if they've not been there and you're going against them.
I think Sedona is a seventh year, she's at least six,
van Lyft is five. That's two veterans, and they got
great players around them, and so I'm just out of
this group. Man that today. That is Texas fight right there.
That's what we're all about.
Speaker 3 (10:06):
And the player that might have the most Texas fight
is Rory Harmon, who comes back from an ACL injury
ten months ago, gets into this game, is arguably the
most impactful defensive player, finishes with thirteen points in five assists.
And she got asked in the post game about the
path to get to this final four.
Speaker 10 (10:28):
I just think about just going through, you know, my
recovery and coming back after ten months. I just look
at it and like I said, I'm so proud of
myself and I'm so.
Speaker 7 (10:39):
Proud of my team. They'll get to this moment.
Speaker 10 (10:42):
I'm not saying I never would have thought, but just
to come back like I did and gets a foight
at four like we did, it just means.
Speaker 7 (10:47):
A lot to me.
Speaker 3 (10:48):
So we will talk to the man who was courtside
for the win, Craigway, coming up next on the Craigways Show.
He will talk about last night's game and maybe give
us some insight on what we can expect from Texas
and South Carolina.
Speaker 2 (11:01):
This one. It's for all the marbles.
Speaker 3 (11:03):
I'll come home next to the Craig Wais Show, Sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred of the Zone. Make sure you are double and
triple checking your sources.
Speaker 2 (11:13):
Today's April Fool's Day. But he's not a fool.
Speaker 3 (11:16):
He's Craig Way on the phone line with us right
now as he goes to the airport. Craig, do you
get a clean change of clothes before you go back
to Tampa Bay?
Speaker 4 (11:25):
That I did? You know when you do these kinds
of trip them and I've had it with baseball, with
men's basketball, women's basketball.
Speaker 5 (11:32):
With football.
Speaker 4 (11:33):
You go home, you dump out the dirty clothes and
you put new, clean ones into your bag. You shower
and change and put all new clothes and you get
going that. The plane landed around two thirty this morning.
And for those who are wondering why would they come
home instead of just going straight to Tampa that were
Believe it or not, they are still student athletes, and
(11:53):
several of the players wanted wanted to go to class.
They had some assignments doing some things of that nature.
So they came back. They went to class this morning,
and then everybody's gathering at the airport here in a
few minutes to fly off the Tampa.
Speaker 3 (12:09):
Well, I know they're having a going away to today,
am I correct?
Speaker 2 (12:13):
On the forty acres?
Speaker 4 (12:15):
Yep, yep.
Speaker 5 (12:16):
That was another thing too.
Speaker 4 (12:17):
They knew that by coming home they could have a sendoff,
and so there will be a sendoff, much like how
football is done before going off to the postseason, men's
basketball in the past, baseball before going to Omaha for
the College World Series. So yeah, it's it's part of
the Texas tradition as well, to do a sendoff before
a big event and final fours bat as big as.
Speaker 3 (12:37):
He gets, Craig, I'll say this, I have not seen
Vic Shaeffer. As emotional as he was last night, it's
obvious how much he cares about his team. But what
did you see in the post game and everything else
with Vic Shaffer?
Speaker 4 (12:51):
Those who've been around it see hit because he pours
so much of himself into it, So he's gonna he'll
be pretty emotional when we've had him on postgame, like
after wins over South Carolina and LSU this year, it
got to where the voice was cracking a little bit
because he's so proud of the work that this team
(13:14):
puts in. And so that was not that. I'll tell
you what was a little unusual. R't Ery Harmon getting
emotional on the TV interview. I hadn't seen that before.
And then when she came over to do our interview,
and I don't know if you've got that, but if
you wind up playing that, she's much more composed. In fact,
she sounded a little embarrassed that she allowed herself to
(13:35):
get that emotional. But we had a good chat, as
did Madison Booker, And you just aired some of that
and Shay Holly and and the and and the conversation
with Vick all in the post game, and and there
was some really good stuff that came out of those interviews.
We were where we were glad to be able to do.
We kind of had to it extrapolated out over some time,
(13:56):
and we had it kind of wait because they had
to cut down on that, but we were willing to
wait on him and and then we got it all
to work.
Speaker 3 (14:01):
So what was the big takeaway from this game that
Because it's easy to say all the Longhorns did good defensively,
and you know, Madison Booker did her job scoring eighteen points.
But what was the biggest takeaway for you in this
game against TCU?
Speaker 4 (14:15):
Craig, I think Kathy Harsh and my analysts pointed it
out at the end of the first quarter. And even
though Texas was only up by I think four at
the end of the quarter, she pointed out because TCU
had already committed eight turnovers in the first quarter. She said, Craig,
I don't think they've seen pressure quite like this, you know,
and a couple of teams in the big twelve, Iowa State,
(14:38):
Kansas State, they could kind of.
Speaker 5 (14:39):
Pressure a little bit.
Speaker 4 (14:40):
Baylor can press you somewhat, but not to this level.
And you could tell it was really rattling the horn Frogs.
One of the goals I think was to make Hayley Vanlidth.
Speaker 5 (14:52):
Bring the ball into.
Speaker 4 (14:53):
The front court and make him have a really difficult time. Well,
five second violations just trying to inbound the ball in
the first quarter, and they wound with four of those,
and then they had a ten second violation as well.
They had five just regular ball in play up the
floor type violations in the game. The turnovers that the
(15:16):
pressure really turned it up on them, and I think
that was the difference. You mentioned Haley van lift with
seven turnovers Tas you had a season of high with
twenty one turnovers and only made twelve shots the entire game.
I read TCU's recap of it, and in looking at
their bright side, they're like, well, they held one of
(15:37):
only two teams to hold Texas under sixty points, the
other being South Carolina. Well that's true because the Logbards
only shot thirty nine percent. They had some but it
takes a lot out of you playing defense, and Mick
Shafer and this team will take that, you know, every
day of the week if you can just ring it
out of another team to where they're just very difficult
(15:58):
in terms of trying to get some effectiveness going consecutively
with their offense. Then they'll take their chances on what
they have to find with their offense. And TCU I
give them a lot of credit.
Speaker 2 (16:11):
They hung around.
Speaker 4 (16:12):
They made a run right before the half, a seven
oher run that pulled it within two, and then they
actually caught Texas at twenty nine to twenty nine, and
then the Long Words had of thirteen to free run
and kind of took command from their tc had one
more eight to zero run in them late in the
game and cut it to six, but that was as
close as they could get. The Long Worts had a
response for every time TCU had a run. So it
(16:34):
was a really good team that Texas beat. And now
they stepped into this, you know, this inner circle of
greatness of women's college basketball, and it's going to be
quite the challenge on Friday night.
Speaker 3 (16:46):
There are some heavy hitters, obviously South Carolina, the team
that Texas will play in the Final four, UCLA and
Yukon on the other side of the bracket as well.
If I told you before the game, Crag that Texas
would lose the rebounding battle, you would be concerned. Right
front court played incredible though, forcing Sidona Prints a foul out.
I thought that the front court did everything they needed
(17:06):
to do in this win.
Speaker 4 (17:08):
Yeah, and I think Vic and Lindsay Wisdom Hilton, the
assistant who works with the Biggs, and she joined us
on the post game as well on how they knew
they had ten fouls to spend between Taylor Jones and
Kyla Oldacre and that they could get physical and try
to force the Doona Prince into committing that. And she
(17:30):
committed two bang bang fouls, one on that old Acre
steal and drive to the bucket and then another one
where I think she got out of her rhythm her
game of bit and got a little frustrated, and that
contributed to it as well. So yeah, the front court
did its job, even though they weren't at their most
efficient offensively. But then again, other than Madison Booker, who
(17:54):
really was oh.
Speaker 3 (17:56):
That's you bring up a good point. Finally, I want
to talk South Carolina coming up. But the old Acre
steel coast to coast, I think that was the defining
play of this game, Craig.
Speaker 4 (18:08):
No doubt. Kathy Harson was so exciting about fell out
of her chair and said that should be the number
one highlight on Sports Center. It wasn't, but it was
the top ten. But they all say she does that
stuff all the time in practice. I've seen her make
plays in practice defending the inbound and by the way,
she had a great game, just you know, in the
(18:29):
inbounding of that she had a couple of steels there
and deflect passes out of bounds and all that stuff.
And there's a running joke about her that she's so
serious and stone face because that's how she looks on
the floor. But I'm here to tell you to get
to know Kyla, and I got to know her when
I was in seeing the Welcome Home dinner before the
(18:49):
season started. She's really funny and as a great personality,
she just compartmentalizes that on the side when she goes
to the floor and becomes a beast. And so that
was pretty pretty fun to see.
Speaker 3 (19:00):
Well, once the woin the National Championship will have to
have her in studio.
Speaker 4 (19:03):
Craig, Yeah, why not, absolutely, And winning the title is
not going to be easy. Obviously there's South Carolina, but
that you know, Andrew, that's the case of the devil.
You know, they played them three times. They lost to
them twice. Both of the losses were in the Palmetta State.
They lost to them in Colombia. They lost to him
(19:24):
in the SEC Women's Tournament championship game, which was in Greenville,
and they had big home court advantages in both of those.
The one game that Texas won, they had the big
home court advantage and beat him in Austin. But I
think it comes down to more than that in both
of the South Carolina victories. And we'll talk about this
some more so that week progresses. What they did was
to dominate the second quarter. First quarter in the SEC
(19:48):
Championship was a twelve to ten ball game, and then
they got dominated in the second quarter. And the same
thing happened in Colombia. Now they got off to a
little bit quicker starting the first quarter, but it was
still within reaching a ball game in the first quarter,
and then in the second quarter they went on I believe,
a fifteen oh run and just blew the doors off.
So both of those games South did that Excuse me
(20:12):
to Texas, But I do think the log Worns are
better prepared for it this time. They know what they're
going to have to deal with, and so big oh
haven't prepared. Then it comes down to the execution itself
on Friday evening.
Speaker 3 (20:26):
Well, and something that Vic Shaffer talks about too in
his post game Craig was that he has played South
Carolina multiple times in the season before, and I think
that that's going to play a part. That might be
one of those sneaky things that not enough people talk about,
is that he's seen South Carolina in the postseason multiple
times in Mississippi State.
Speaker 4 (20:43):
Yeah, starting with that and then with Destory, I mean,
and even remember his first season, Texas got to the
Elite eight and lost to South Carolina. They were in
routes winning a national title, and Texas was kind of
a Cinderella story that year coming out of the pandemic.
But that they know how good South Carolina is from
(21:04):
the backcourt with Malaysia Ful Wiley and Tina Pow Pow
to Chloe Kitts who had a monster game against them
in the SEC Tournament championship. Uh, you know all of that,
all of those outstanding players kind of come to the
scene and they're and they're familiar with it. They've been
down this road. They're the defending national champions, so they
(21:25):
know what it takes, so it's it's going to be
a supreme challenge. And in the other semi final, Ucla
has one of the best players in the country and
Lauren Betts. They're outstanding post We know what Yukon has
and Page Becker said, I will tell you this, I
think Yukon of the four teams in the final four
right now, Yukon is playing the most dominating brand of
(21:46):
basketball when you look at what they've done to their
opponents in the NCAA Tournament. I mean, USC kind of
hung around a little bit, but it was it was
pretty much Yukon's game. They they they controlled it from
the start. That is a big part of it. She's
not the only part of it, however, And this is
Yukon's twenty fourth Final four, so they know what they're
(22:07):
doing as well. So that'll be an interesting game when
they play Ucla in the second One.
Speaker 3 (22:13):
Fun fact that Yukon they're the only two seed left
between the men's and the women's bracket.
Speaker 4 (22:17):
Craig, Yeah, yeah, all ones. And of course it's funny
that on the men's side all four ones getting the
San Antonio. The only other time it happen was two
thousand and eight in San Antonio. So when Kansas beat
Memphis in the final so and Texas was in the
Elite eight that year and they lost to Derrick Rose
in Memphis in that Elite eight game at NRG Stadium
(22:39):
in Houston. So you're right, it's been a year of chalk,
a year for the higher seeds to kind of really dominate.
And Yukon, it was argued by many, should have been
a one seed. And this was even before Juju Watkins
got hurt. In fact, on my women's bracket, I picked
(22:59):
you On to beat usc in the Elite eight. Now
I missed one. I had mc State getting past LSU
and beating UCLA in the Elite eight. That did not happen.
LSU beat him in the sweet sixteen. So three of
my final four picks are there for the women. Three
of my final four picks are there for the men.
(23:21):
But it's it's it's a year of chalk, a year
for the higher seeds to be in control of it.
Speaker 2 (23:27):
Craig Way, thanks so much, bandon moving to see anything.
Speaker 4 (23:32):
No, oh, we do want to let folks know. The
game Friday Night can be heard on ninety eight point
one FM on KVAT, home the home of Austin's all
time country favorites. We're putting the women's games on ninety
eight point one FM this weekend. Long Run Baseball shifts
over to one oh three point one because of Royndrock
Express Baseball on the Zone on Friday, busy times them.
(23:56):
So the women Friday night and obviously if they win
and reach the championship on Sunday afternoon, both of those
games will be on ninety eight point one one FM
on KVAT. So just want to let folks know that
for a programming note.
Speaker 3 (24:09):
And we'll continue to remind him. Craig over here, we'll
talk to you tomorrow from Tampa.
Speaker 4 (24:14):
You bet we'll see him.
Speaker 3 (24:15):
See you, Craig, Voice of the Longhorns, Craig Way. As
the show rolls on, it's April Fool's Day, which means
there's gonna be a lot of inconceivable things happening. We'll
talk about them all next on Sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred The Zone. Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
Is it inconceivable for you to be tricked on an
April Fool's Day?
Speaker 2 (24:36):
No, it is not.
Speaker 3 (24:37):
And we'll start our inconceivable with this. I am somebody
who I consider myself pretty smart, and I'm considered myself
somebody who you know, we'll own. I'll do my own research.
I'll double and triple check to make sure that stories
are right. You know, maybe I don't pronounce every name correctly,
but I do an okay job looking up sources.
Speaker 2 (24:55):
So when I saw the Tiger.
Speaker 3 (24:56):
Woods tweeted today quote, I can't I believe I'm saying this,
But after a few months after rupturing my left achilles,
the sleeping in the hyperbaric chamber plus the explosive lifts
my doctor and trainers have me on had me ready
to play in the Masters next week. Can't wait to
see see all in the court. Of course, I thought
(25:18):
that was real. I bought it. It was from the
verified Tiger Woods account on Twitter, and I bought it.
I bought that this was from the you know, this
was real?
Speaker 2 (25:29):
It was not. It was not real.
Speaker 3 (25:32):
Tiger Woods has to follow up and say that no, haha,
April Fool's Day, everybody. I bought it, and I had
a witty take, which was, you're gonna blow out your
other tiger Tiger like this is a bad idea. You
can't be trying to come back Russian Achilles injury. Luckily
I wasn't the only one that got duped. Jason Whitlock
(25:53):
was duped as well as some other sports media personalities.
Seventy seven point three million views on said tweet from
Tiger Woods, so it got some of us. I hopefully
it did not catch you as well. Aprifols also means
that the brands are getting into it right, and some
of them include Doctor Pepper, which has said that they
(26:16):
are having a Doctor Pepper flavored TikTok. Yahoo announced that
they are going to have a grass covered keyboard. Chocolate
Maker Nestle Nestell, Why am I see? I can't read
today either. Ntel announced a new silent crunch bar with
a cooked rice which would make it for seventy five
(26:37):
less noise instead of the standard crispy rice and chocolate treat.
Speaker 2 (26:41):
Uh yeah, so not ideal.
Speaker 3 (26:46):
Hot sauce company Tabasco announced ah infused sunscreen, which okay
for your your sunburns. Quote, We've got your taste bud covers,
now your skin too protect just in time for spring break,
Stay hot not burnt.
Speaker 2 (27:03):
Uh yeah.
Speaker 3 (27:05):
Some other ones include Huskfarna, who announced that they have
a new lawn mower which is in the shape of
a ufo. The company announced the global leader in outdoor
power products and robotics who's joining with an iconic April
Fools Fund, a series of social media pros the Lawn
Circle sightings. Other ones include a viral golf club, which
(27:30):
would be a putter that can also double, as you
guessed it, a driver. Yeah, not ideal. And then there's
a couple of wine companies that announced that they are
having new protein packed champagnes, which cracked me up. I
thought that was a that was pretty good. This one's
a crime against humanity as well. It's an ice cream
(27:55):
flavored buttered chicken chicken taraioki ice cream that's flavored like that.
All very very bad ideas, not good at all on
an April Fool's Day. Yeah, and that's really the takeaway
here is that you can't. I always forget about it.
I flip my calendar this morning. I have my calendar
(28:17):
that I got on our Cotton Bowl trip last year
with the Fellas.
Speaker 2 (28:23):
I changed the calendar.
Speaker 3 (28:25):
It's April first, and I did not even register with
me that there would be some of these like just
crazy stories, just absolutely foolish stories out and about so again,
keep your eyes peeled. You don't want to be like
me and get caught on that all right. Other inconceivable news.
(28:47):
I always like a story about a reunion. I like
it when you hear about dogs. And this dog reunion.
This North Carolina family reunited with their missing dog after
three years. So in North Carolina, family spy their missing
dog online three years after the canine disappeared from their home.
The Rocky Mount Police departments on social media that Jonathan
(29:11):
and his wife spy their long missing dog a Rocky
Mount Petfinder page. The dog had gone missing three years
earlier from their home. It's about thirty five miles away
from where this petfinder website was. My team and I
are overwhelmed with joy. Derek Barnhill, the city's animals control supervisor, said,
(29:32):
we reunite animals with their owners daily. It's rare to
see a reunion after such a long period of time.
The dog has husky heritage, which contributed to the original escape.
As you know that huskies are very intelligent, very high energy,
but they also like to have prison breaks.
Speaker 2 (29:48):
They are big on the escape artists.
Speaker 3 (29:50):
The police department said they never stop searching for their
beloved talk. So if you're somebody missing your pet, maybe
go on some of those pet finder pages and maybe
you'll be able to to.
Speaker 2 (30:00):
Bring it home. Look for your dog and all all
the right places, all right.
Speaker 3 (30:05):
When we come back, is it inconceivable that the Push
Push gets removed? And is Aaron Rodgers signing with the Steelers.
We'll figure it out next all Coming up next on
The Cragway Show is our one rolls on on Sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone Sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred The Zone Andrews will hanging out with you this
Tuesday afternoon. A lot to get into in our number
(30:28):
two of The Cragway Show, including one Memphis Grizzly player said,
maybe the funniest thing I've heard this season, and the
Grizzlies are going through a lot right now, so that's
a hard bar to clear, he said, an absolute incredible line.
We'll get to that in our number two. And then
also the guards last night for Texas were outstanding. The
(30:51):
defense that they played on Haley van Lyft, which was
the engine that powered TCU throughout the season, forcing her
three to fifteen shooting with seven turnovers. Last night, Shay
Holly and Roy Harmon put on a defensive clinic. We
will hear from them, and then Colt McCoy and Steve
Sarkisian spoke on Texas's quarterback Numero Uno number one on
(31:11):
the depth chart, arch manning this season and the clean
the Clean Poddet podcast. The Clean Pocket podcast with Cole
McCoy earlier today dropped. We'll talk a little Texas football
in hour at number two as well. But the NFL
owners are meeting, the NFL head coaches are meeting all
in Palm Beach, and the NFL owners. They approved significant
(31:34):
changes to the league's kickoff structure, also authorizing the expansion
in replay assistant programs during the final session of the
league meetings this morning. The touchback on kickoffs will be
marked at the thirty five yard line for the twenty
five season. The move of the league and officials and
special teams coaches will promote a significant increase in return rate.
(31:54):
Now they're hoping that that will allow more kick returns
because fans like to see kick returns. The new language
reflects the original intent of the massive revamp the NFL
instituted this past season, with the final negotiations resulting. The
touchback spotted at the thirty so they're going to give
them five more yards. That left many coaches comfortable kicking touchbacks.
(32:15):
In twenty twenty four, the league produced a return rate
of thirty two percent. The hope is that this new
revamp will bring a return rate up to around seventy
to seventy five percent. The concussion rate on kickoffs last
season dropped forty three percent from twenty to twenty three now.
Denver special teams coach Darren Risey says, the space and
(32:38):
speed of the play were much more down than what
we're used to. So the players have tremendous success and
that's what we felt it was time to move them
to the thirty five. Now owners have a lot to kind.
Speaker 2 (32:52):
Of discuss there.
Speaker 3 (32:53):
Again, you want to care about players safety through the NFL.
After the track record that they've had, you're looking for
any way to make the game safer. The other proposed
changes of Detroit Lions proposed to make the playoff seeding
based on regular season records rather than divisional championships. That
was table for further discussion. Detroit proposed to eliminate the
(33:14):
automatic first down as a penalty imposed for defensive holding
in illegal contact that did not pass. The Tush push
is the interesting one though. That's the one that most
people have cared the most about. That's the one that
most people have been paying attention to because the Philadelphia
Eagles essentially tush pushed their way into a Super Bowl
win last year. Now, was it all that, No, there
(33:36):
was other big plays.
Speaker 11 (33:37):
A J.
Speaker 3 (33:37):
Brown, Devantae Smith, Jalen Hurts all played very well in
the Super Bowl, but there was a times last season
that the game was won or lost by the trenches.
And not just the trenches, but this signature play by Philadelphia. Now,
Nick Sirianni, the head coach of the Eagles, has said
that it's safe. Doug mccam Sean McDermott, the head coach
(33:59):
of the Buffalo Bills, came out yesterday against it. The
NFC coaches spoke today. Matt Lafleur kind of argued for
more safety protocols when it comes to the play. And
the owners, well, they were split two sixteen sixteen was
the final vote and they're going to table it for
further discussion. Now, the NFL doesn't have any information on
(34:23):
if the play causes more injuries. There hasn't been a
large study done by the league just yet, but their
quote expert witness, a doctor Allan Stills. He told owners
this week that the mechanics of the play could lead
to injuries. So that makes people a little concerned. Obviously,
the Green Bay Packers were the ones that put the
(34:43):
proposal on the table. Sixteen NFL teams liked it. Sixteen
NFL teams did not, So they've tabled it for further discussion.
So we get one more season of the argument, back
and forth and forth and back on if this play
will continue. Continue to make the case, the plead for
it's a fine play. The safety isn't the concern to me,
(35:05):
it's the optics of it. There's a reason that the
NFL is the number one product on television. There's a
reason that across the globe it's the number one thing
that everybody wants to watch come February. People like to
see explosive plays. The NFL is a built for television event.
The reason that rugby isn't the most popular sport in
America is because it's not a lot to look at. Yeah,
(35:27):
there's a couple of big plays here and there, but
a lot of the times it's guys grunting and pushing
each other, locking arms, and that's kind of what the
tush pilt looks like for a lot of people. It's okay,
everybody gets to the line and we're making a big
burst of six feet a yard two yards on every
one of these plays. It helped the Philadelphia Eagles because
(35:48):
they have a quarterback athletic enough and built large enough.
And Jalen Hurts, who I think when he was at
Alabama was squading like six hundred pounds was a story
I read in Sports Illustrated. He's a giant lower body.
He has a push to push. To be completely honest
with you, this is a guy who knows how to
hit the weight room. So you have an athletic quarterback
(36:10):
like that, and then defensive linemen are having to fight
in the trenches to try to make the stop. Linebackers
can't jump over the line and spear the guy. But
the other quarterbacks who are trying to make this run
to try to execute these plays, they aren't built physically
strong enough like Jalen Hurts this with the lower body
to be able to push the pile forward right. I
(36:32):
saw Jordan Love try to do it this year, and
that's why I think it's very funny that the Packers
are the team that are making these big dare I
say push to try to eliminate the play because their
quarterback isn't built strong enough for that type of play.
Josh Allen and the Bills run a similar style to
this play.
Speaker 2 (36:50):
If you hear their head coach Sean McDermott talk.
Speaker 3 (36:52):
About it, It's a similar play, but the angles are
not necessarily as sharp, meaning that Josh Allen stands more
upright when he's trying to run the play. It looks
more like a quarterback sneak than it does a toush push.
So the play got split down the middle, and it
makes sense that Roger Goodell does not want to step
(37:13):
in it and be the guy to make this type
of decision.
Speaker 2 (37:19):
It's not nearly worth your.
Speaker 3 (37:21):
Time if you're the commissioner of the sport to make
half of the league upset about banning this play. The
other reason, and look this is true too. If you
don't like it, stop it. Find a way to stop
the play, and you don't have to worry about outlawing it.
If you can stop the Eagles from running it, do it.
Get bigger guys on the offense or defensive line.
Speaker 2 (37:41):
All right.
Speaker 3 (37:42):
When we come back, our two of The Craigway Show
rolls on talking college football, obviously with the Texas Longhorns.
Starkesian spoke with Ta Coole McCoy, and we'll hear some
post game from last night with Craig Madison, Booker, Roy
Harmon and Vick Schaeffer all coming up next to The
Craigway Show on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred the Zone station,
and you're gonna have to.
Speaker 2 (38:01):
Do that because we have a.
Speaker 3 (38:03):
Ton of athletics, ton of sports happening all over the place.
The Zone is your home for the Round Rock Express obviously,
and on Saturday it was it's going to be.
Speaker 2 (38:16):
Ninety three to one.
Speaker 3 (38:19):
The Cavid FM will be your home for Texas women
as they go to the Final four after a win
against Tennessee or a correction against TCU yesterday fifty eight
to forty seven was your final. We will hear from
Shay Holly and Roy Harmon and how they were able
to shut down Haley Van Lift and propel this Texas
(38:40):
team to the Final Four for the first time since
two thousand and three and one O three one will
be your home for Texas Baseball. Now, Texas Baseball has
a matchup tonight against Texas State and they're going to
be without one of their best players, which would be
junior right fielder Max Blue, who is week to week
after suffering a thumb injury after making a fall against
(39:02):
Missouri on Friday, So we missed both games of the
double header on Saturday. Kendall Rodgers from D one Baseball
announced yesterday injury update. All American outfielder Back Blue will
miss the rest of the regular season with a fractured thumb.
He was told Blue will be back for the postseason.
Now again, Texas is one of the best teams in
(39:22):
the SEC, so you feel pretty confident saying, hey, this
is a playoff team, this is a postseason team if
things continue to go the way they continue to go.
Speaker 2 (39:32):
Here's the thing.
Speaker 3 (39:33):
He's batting almost four hundred three point fifty eight this
season with six home runs and twenty two RBIs. He
is a power hitter, a guy that you want to
have in your lineup. Longhorns will be without him tonight
as they take on Texas State first Pitch tonight at
six thirty and Roger Wallace and Keith Morland will be
(39:55):
on the call. Okay, other news, and this is the
story that I am most interested in, obviously not Texas related.
A non Texas story that I'm most interested in is
the collapse of the Memphis Grizzlies. Three seasons ago. Memphis
was the darling child in the NBA. Three seasons ago,
(40:18):
we were talking about the Memphis Grizzlies as the next
team up. Oh, we love Oklahoma City in Houston's building,
but Memphis with John Morant, the second coming of Alan Iverson,
the guy that has the balance ability of a Derrick Rose.
He is the next type of point guard who needs
three point shooting when you have a guy that can
jump over anybody anywhere, anytime. Well, John Moran has had
(40:42):
his troubles with law enforcement obviously off the court, problems
with you know, some of the things that are happening
around him. Okay, and then last season was essentially a
dud thanks to injuries. So this was the year for
the Memphis Grizzlies and Memphis, to their credit, number five
seed right now in the Western Conference, forty four and
(41:03):
thirty one, firmly in the playoff picture. But then this
past week they fire their head coach, Taylor Jenkins, who
is one of the or who was the winning as
head coach. According to reports, things were not going well
that Taylor Jenkins looked at Jaan Moran and looked at
this team and was wanting a little bit more. We'll say, Okay,
(41:24):
this was a guy who was expecting maybe a little
bit more from his star, maybe a little bit more
from his other, you know, outside role players. Incomes Triple
J Jalen Jackson junior, who has been playing like defensive
player of the Year, who has taken a step up
and has looked like the second star in Memphis in
(41:44):
the times that Jamarey has not been playing. He has
been a two way stud the likes of Anthony Davis
and Bamanabayo.
Speaker 2 (41:52):
He has been great. But last night the.
Speaker 3 (41:54):
Memphis Grizzlies suffered a embarrassing loss to the Boston Celtics
one seventeen one oh three loss, and the Grizzlies now
are three and seven in their last ten and Triple
J had this to say, I.
Speaker 8 (42:09):
Mean, we've had wins lost and no reason to feel
like crazy, like it could.
Speaker 5 (42:15):
It's always it always could be worse.
Speaker 7 (42:16):
You could be homeless.
Speaker 3 (42:18):
Now, that to me is the quote of the night
out of the Association. Now you get press posting press
conferences all the time, and I maybe I'm harping too
much on Triple J here, maybe I'm harping too much
on Jalen Jackson Junior. But you know things are bad
when your buddy is saying it could always be worse.
We could, we could be homeless. That is crazy to
(42:41):
me to say. And Memphis has fallen apart and fallen
from grace in a way that I have not seen
the team fall from grace in professional sports in a
very very long time. Like just again, think about this.
This is a team that went to the Western Conference finals.
This is a team that we felt very high that
if there was going to be another era, we love
(43:03):
the grid and grind era in Memphis with Zebo and
Marc Gasol and Tony Allen. There's just the hard nosed defense.
If there was going to be another era, it was
going to be this young up and coming right John Moran,
Desmond Baines, Dylan Brooks. When he was there, it was
a young team Zach EAT's there and they just haven't
been able to find their footing.
Speaker 2 (43:25):
Jah Moran has been.
Speaker 3 (43:26):
Hurt, and the Grizzlies, who are firmly in the playoff hunt,
feel like a team that are on the outside looking
in at this point in the season when we're in
single digits games from the end of the season going
into the postseason, and you're asking their media and you're
asking the reporters, you're talking to the guys who are
there day to day, what are the expectations, and the
(43:46):
expectations are come maybe we'll get out of the first
round as the five seed. You gotta feel a little
bit more positive about your team than that, right, No,
not the case.
Speaker 2 (43:57):
Not the case. And Triple J.
Speaker 3 (44:00):
Like I said, quote of the night, you know you're
in a bad spot. I've been there before. I've said
things could be a lot worse. It's like, yeah, I
guess they could. We could be things could be a
lot worse, all right. Last night, the Texas Longhorns punched
their ticket to the Final Four in Tampa Bay, and
(44:20):
the Texas team defensively was outstanding, keeping the TCU horn
Frogs to twenty seven percent from the field twelve made shots,
twenty percent from Downtown were able to force Sodota Prints
into foul trouble and force Haley van Lyft into seven
turnovers and three of fifteen shooting last night. Shay Holly,
(44:46):
who I did a very good job on Hailey van
Lyft in switches, was asked what was the defensive strategy
to limit TCU's offensive juggernaut.
Speaker 12 (44:55):
When me and Rory got into some switches. I think
we did a really good job of switching out hard
and like she said, just trying to get the ball
out of her hands.
Speaker 7 (45:03):
She's super talented guard and just.
Speaker 12 (45:05):
Being like really consistent and just yeah, like she said,
like not vibing on her things.
Speaker 7 (45:12):
She's just really talented.
Speaker 12 (45:13):
But I think we pressured her a lot, made other
people maybe try to run the offense a little bit,
which was one of our goals.
Speaker 2 (45:18):
For sure, which is big.
Speaker 3 (45:20):
If you can force the ball out of the primary
ball handler's hand, that will help you. You're a situation
where we're gonna let Madison Connor beat us, We're gonna
let some of these other shooters beat us. Now Connor,
to her credit four of eleven from the field, was
one of four players to hit a three pointer last night,
one of six from downtown. But you're trying to force
(45:42):
other people to beat you, now, Roy Harmon got asked
the same question, what was the defensive strategy to limit
Hayley van Lyff.
Speaker 13 (45:49):
I would say, you know, team defense always is the
number one thing of trying to limit her touches as much.
And I mean she's a three level scorer and a
great basketball player and she played really well for them,
But yeah, just kind of stand in front. I think
with a good basketall player and ballhanderer like she is,
like me personally, I can't like gamble on you know,
(46:10):
on dribbles and heasy's like I have to just say disciplined,
stand front, cut her off and stuff like that, and
just get her to like o the ball because a
lot of their offense runs through her and she makes
great plays. So just kind of getting the ball out
of her handsome definitely is one of the keys.
Speaker 3 (46:26):
And Rory Harmon a defensive masterclass last night on TCU
was able to force, like I said, twenty one turnovers
by TCU and for Harmon two steals along with Masson
Booker's two steals. Booker and Harmon combined for thirty one points,
eight rebounds, and seven assist. Texas is thirty and three
(46:50):
when they force more than fifteen turnovers, and the Texas
Longhorns have tied the record for most wins in the
NCAA era thirty five and four. In nineteen eighty one
eighty two season, Texas again dominated in the paint twenty
four to eight against TCU, and we said that was
going to be the deciding factors who is going to
(47:11):
be able to clean up on the glass. Tc did
out rebound Texas in the win. However, the Longhorns forcing
Sedona prints into foul trouble is again a pivotal moment
in this game. All right now, Roy Harmon got asked,
what does it mean for this team, for Texas to
make it back to the Final four for the first
time since two thousand and three.
Speaker 13 (47:32):
Yeah, coach Jodi, she is the standard like curbing around us,
I get the vibe she has that aura to her,
So I mean she laid the foundation for us. And yeah,
I guess when you look back and see how long
it's it takes, its has taken. And to see that
(47:53):
we've been to all the tournaments. Walkoch schafersmen here the
lead AIDS one to SE championship, a Big twelve championship.
There's a lot of things that are changing around here,
and I think obviously, like I said, we're just laying
more of that foundation and increasing our standard every day.
Speaker 3 (48:11):
I'll tell you that is the key right there. And
the person who has coined the phrase the standard as
a standard, whoever has put that on the most T
shirts and been able to sell the most inventory with
the standard as a standard, is probably a bajillionaire by
this point, because that is what the saying has been
now for Texas Athletics, the standard is a standard. The
(48:32):
standard Now, after getting past the Elite eight for Vick
Shafer's fifth time making to the Final four as a
head coach or an assistant coach, his first time making
to the Final four as the head coach of the
Texas Longhorns, the standard is the standard. There are more
nets to cut down though, as they take on South
Carolina in the Final four, and as we get closer
(48:53):
to that game, we will talk more and more about
how these two teams match up and how Texas can
get revenge for that loss in the SEC Championship game.
In that tournament they had a couple of weeks ago.
All right, when we come back, Cole McCoy in the
Clean Pocket Podcast, talk to the head coach of the
Texas Long Horns, Steve Sarkasian. You're not going to miss this.
Talking about the quarterback arch Manning, what he brings to
(49:16):
the table. We'll talk about the next Sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred Zone.
Speaker 4 (49:24):
It's the craig Way Show with the voice of the
Texas Longhorns in Hall of Vain.
Speaker 2 (49:29):
Broadcast there craig.
Speaker 3 (49:31):
Way Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. You can
follow me on Twitter at Andrew Underscore Zimmle. That's at
Andrew Underscore zimmele on Twitter. All right, Well, the Texas
Long Horns no spring game, but there are spring updates
and one of those updates came yesterday in the news
(49:52):
that Texas wide receiver Ryan Wingo sidelined with a hamstring injury.
The Horns could be without their sophomore for the remainder
of the spring practices. The latest comes as it seems
that he suffered a hamstring injury. It's not considered a
long term issue, but it puts a strand in the
wide receiver room for Texas, and a lot of folks
(50:15):
are saying, can there be a Can there be an
influx of players in the transfer portal as we get
closer to the beginning of what would be the season,
right as the season comes closer and closer day by day. Now,
Cole McCoy has a new podcast, The Former Longhorn stud
(50:38):
former Cleveland Brown Washington Redskin Bounced around the NFL in
is still one of my favorite college quarterbacks of all time,
one of the most winning.
Speaker 2 (50:49):
College quarterbacks of all time.
Speaker 3 (50:51):
The Clean Podcast Pocket Podcast with Jay Gruden and Cole
McCoy dropped an episode this morning with head coach Steve Sarkejia.
Speaker 2 (51:01):
So of course this perked my ears up because I say.
Speaker 3 (51:05):
To myself, Okay, wait, one more podcast to add to
my collection. I gotta subscribe and listen. And two, anytime
Sark is on one of these podcasts, he's gonna give
you a nugget. There's gonna be some information, There's gonna
be something there, you just have to look for it.
And luckily this episode was short. It was about twenty
(51:26):
minutes long, and you can find it wherever you get
your podcasts. It's on YouTube as well. I skimmed through
it and I was listening and there's different you know, chapters,
and they talk about the transfer portal, which we'll get
into here in a second, because I thought some of
the information he gave out was kind of interesting. But
he talked about Arch Manning and the development of Arch
to this point, talk about Arch.
Speaker 2 (51:47):
How important was him being able to play three games
last year?
Speaker 11 (51:51):
Huge man?
Speaker 5 (51:51):
Huge?
Speaker 14 (51:52):
I think first, anytime you're a backup and you have
to go into a game and really play in the.
Speaker 11 (51:57):
Game, not the fo Yeah, get in there and hand the.
Speaker 14 (52:01):
Ball off and throw a couple of quick outs like
he had to play, which was good man.
Speaker 11 (52:05):
I think we saw some really things.
Speaker 14 (52:06):
A we saw athleticism that was probably surprised a lot
of people. Be his ability to throw the deep ball
and the deep ball in our system and how important
that is to take advantage of his one on one
opportunities was huge. Third of the leadership, like this guy's
got a charismatic some dude.
Speaker 3 (52:24):
You can feel the leadership that Arch Manning possesses. You
can feel it radiate off of him. And those are
the things that are intangibles, Those are the things that
people get made fun of like our friend Colin Cowhard
gets made fun of quarterback face that the guy who
was the best looking guy on the playground got to
be quarterback and then those guys ended up being NFL starters.
(52:47):
And Arch Manning has the pedigree, He obviously has the
last name, the dynastic name of Manning carries a ton
of weight. But you also have to have the skills
to back it up. So that's why when we have
talked about Arch at nauseum on podcast on air in Bars,
when we talk about the quarterback for the Texas Longhorns,
(53:08):
I have consistently said, strip it all of it away,
Take the name off, take the hype off as one
of the best quarterback prospects ever. Take all of that
and pull it away and give me what you see.
Give me the eyeball test. What do you see against
Mississippi State? What'd you see in that playoff game where
you came in for some plays? What do you see
in practice? Take it all the way, because there's a
(53:30):
lot of hype that you have to cut through here.
There's a lot of all the extra stuff. I think
it's big that there is obviously a quarterback fraternity at Texas.
There's obviously a quarterback fraternity at Texas, and when you
think about the twenty first century quarterbacks, there's four guys.
I think that there are four guys in the twenty
(53:51):
first century that you put in this special class that
is the when the guys are all together, when there's
a family reunion of Texas Longhorns, there's four quarterbacks who
are always going to be a seat at the dais,
They're always going to be at the front of the room.
It's Vince Young, Sam Ellinger Queen Yours at this point,
(54:13):
and it's coll McCoy and Cole McCoy and Vince Young
are obviously the two guys who every other quarterback will
be compared to. V Why because he was an incredible
athlete and he won a national championship and Cold McCoy
because he was a winner and he led some of
the best Longhorn teams to ever to ever come through.
So when Cob McCoy is talking about arch Manning, I
(54:36):
tend to listen a little closer when one of those
guys who is the guy I tend to tend spend
a little bit more time and a little bit more
weight because if there's ever gonna be a guy who
knows what it's like to be the guy. It's gonna
be coll McCoy, it's got to be cold McCoy and
Sarkejian kind of breaking it down to it, and he
(54:56):
goes on to talk about how this isn't a knock
on Quinn, but there's things that Arch does well well.
And I guarantee you there's things that Quentin did better
than Arch does now. But I love that we're kind
of turning the page that we now are not doing
this comparing contrast because every one of us was getting
sick of it. I guarantee you that you're in the
same boat I am with. I don't want to hear
(55:18):
about the comparing contrast between these two guys. Obviously they
do things a little bit differently. Obviously one does things
a little bit better than the other. I'm ready for
twenty eighty five. And in this podcast, the Cole mccaway
Clean Pocket Podcast, they talk a lot about where this
team is.
Speaker 2 (55:36):
Can they get over the hump?
Speaker 1 (55:38):
Wow?
Speaker 3 (55:38):
They get over the hump? How have they been grinding
over the past three seasons? How have they gone from
being a team that won five games and year one
under Starts and now being at the doorstep of the
College Football National Championship in the previous two seasons, and
how there's guys on this roster who have been through
the highs and the lows, who know what it's like
to come up just short in these big games. What's
(56:00):
like to see a team like Ohio State win a
national championship.
Speaker 2 (56:04):
It's big.
Speaker 3 (56:06):
It matters, and another thing that matters, and another thing
that we're going to continue to talk about. Fans are
going to continue to talk about. Coach is going to
continue to talk about. Players are going to continue to
talk about it as a transfer portal, and how we
saw it in March Madness. We saw some of the
best coaches in the sport, guys like Tom Izzo who
(56:28):
railed against the transfer portal being opened during their postseason.
They're the most important time of the year. There's guys
who can opt out. The Sarkisian's in a similar spot
when it comes to the transfer portal.
Speaker 14 (56:40):
The whole month of December, while we were in the
College Football playoffs, it was essentially free agency in college football.
Every player on our team could have went in that portal,
and we had nine guys go in at that time.
That's the first thing that comes to mind when I
think a portal is to make sure we keep the
right players on our team.
Speaker 11 (56:57):
When we deal with the portal, we're about filling means.
Speaker 14 (57:00):
I'm about building our roster from the ground up and
bringing in high school kids, developing him of our program,
getting them engulfed in our culture, into our schemes. But
yet the portal has provided an opportunity to fill those voids,
and we brought in some veteran players that have been
helpful for us there.
Speaker 11 (57:16):
But we really don't major there.
Speaker 3 (57:17):
Yeah, no, this is and I like what you said
at the end with the major, because I'm going to
make a good point here.
Speaker 2 (57:23):
It's the You don't major in the transfer portal.
Speaker 3 (57:27):
You can minor in it, you can dabble in it,
you can take a class in the transfer portal, but
your major has to be building a culture. That is
what your major has to be when you are the
head coach of a school like Texas. Yeah, there's other
schools who can build through the portal. There are going
to be some schools here pretty soon who are going
to make it deep into these playoffs. As the playoffs
(57:47):
expand there are gonna be teams who are playing in
semi final games that are completely new faces. That we're
going to have a era, and I'm calling it right now.
It's gonna bebout two or three years before this bad
kind of It's gonna be two or three years of
this where you're gonna get teams who are gonna go
to the playoffs with thirty new faces, with forty new faces.
(58:08):
And it's gonna take a very very special coach to
make that work and a very very special culture to
make that work. But when you're the head coach at
the University of Texas, you don't need.
Speaker 2 (58:20):
To do that.
Speaker 3 (58:21):
There are guys who want to be here. There are
guys who need to be here. Right You can go
and minor in the transfer portal. You can bring in
some extra talent, and when a guy like Trey Wingo
hurts his hamstring is out for the spring, you can
go in the portal and try to bring in a
little bit more talent and see, hey, let's add a
little bit more depth to this position in case of emergency.
Speaker 2 (58:41):
Come regular season.
Speaker 3 (58:43):
In the best conference in college football, you cannot afford
to be down a man, you cannot afford to have
a room that's very, very tight. When it comes to talent,
you want to have a ton of talent in the
room and next man out mentality. Last year, you think
about the Axis running back room, how it got plagued
(59:03):
by the injury bug early in the season and they
were able to balance back and have a very I
thought it was a pretty good running scheme and a
running game, even with guys on the IR.
Speaker 2 (59:15):
I think that's important to do.
Speaker 3 (59:16):
I think that's a big reason why the Longhorns have
continued to win the way they have in these past
previous two seasons with Sark. The transport for portal cannot
be the thing that you major in. It's got to
be a thing that you minor and you dabble in.
That cannot be the solution to your roster problems. And
we're gonna see it. It's gonna be the next two seasons,
(59:38):
I'm calling it. You're gonna see teams get to the
semifinals with thirty faces, and we're gonna say, Wow, these
are great teams, and Wow, these are great cultures, and
these are good coaches who were able to go do this.
Speaker 2 (59:49):
But it does not last.
Speaker 3 (59:51):
It's the difference between building a guy up and getting
him into a spot where he can go to the
NFL Draft and help you win national championships. It's that
type of cold versus the quick snack. The transfer portal
is a quick snack. It's a quick solution. It's a
protein bar. It's not a meal. It's a protein bar.
It's not a meal. Building a culture is the meal,
(01:00:13):
and that's what Sarcasian is doing. A Texas all right.
When we come back, we'll hear from Craig Way as
well as Madison Booker, Rory Harmon, and Vick Schaeffer. After
a win in the Elite eight propels the Texas Long
Word Women to the Final four. All that coming up
next on The Craigway Show on Sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred The Zone. Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
Andrews Im will hanging out with you. This Monday or
(01:00:35):
Tuesday edition of the Craigway Program is our number two
rolls on Now. Texas Women last night win big against TCU.
It was the most important game of the season, and
now it rolls into the most important game of the season.
Every one of these games is a little bit more important.
Every one of these games carries a little bit more weight.
(01:00:57):
Last night's game carried a ton of weight, as Vic
and his team were trying to get to the Final
Four for the first time since two thousand and three.
Now they were able to thanks in part to Ry
Harmon and Madison Booker. The two combined for thirty one points,
eight rebounds, and seven assists in a fifty eight to
forty seven win for the Texas Longhorns. Madison Booker was
(01:01:20):
on the postgame show with Craig Way and this is
what it sounded like.
Speaker 4 (01:01:24):
Joining us now on the post game not only a
long horn player, but also the most outstanding player in
this region. Madison Booker, you have to help me here.
How many times have you seen have you seen Kyla
make that move that she did with the steal and
outrun somebody like Sedona Prince to the end and lay
it in.
Speaker 6 (01:01:44):
I mean, it's not my first time, is your first
time I seeing it?
Speaker 7 (01:01:46):
I feel like I've seen this before.
Speaker 4 (01:01:47):
I've seen like I said, I told Shay, I've seen
a lot of practices, but I didn't remember seeing her
make a move quite like that.
Speaker 7 (01:01:54):
She does, you know, she does no, she does.
Speaker 6 (01:01:56):
You must have missed it. You must have been going
so quick and she was going. I already made the LEO.
And I'm not surprised when this. I'm not surprised for
my team mateespecially Caller.
Speaker 7 (01:02:03):
I mean, she's a dog, she's a.
Speaker 6 (01:02:05):
She's definitely a paint disruptor. And I just love that today.
I know, like the last couple of days, you know,
she's been you know, kind of you know, and but
I think she really turned it up today. I think
she kind of shook off, you know, like the bad games,
and she really came back out and she was ready
to play where her name was called.
Speaker 4 (01:02:22):
And really the post players needed to step up with
a player like Prince, and I thought they did it.
But it was really stout team defense. I thought all
the way over what you guys did against fan Lyft,
what you did against Madison Connor, I mean the key
weapons when yeah, I mean, hey.
Speaker 7 (01:02:39):
That's just team defense. Also, our coach was he prepped
us very very well.
Speaker 6 (01:02:42):
We watched the own a lie just you know on
her stets, you know, like their personnel. I mean we
knew their personnel, we knew the players that were gonna run.
We basically, you know, was trying to be a sub
ahead of them, and I think coach did a great job.
Speaker 4 (01:02:54):
I've asked you several times about these takeover moments, and
I said, Dan Left, does it pertec he would get
the fourth quarter, third fourth quarter games. I'm looking at
you in the fourth quarter and you had six critical
points in the fourth quarter to get the seventeenth. Is
it something in a within you that that clicks in
where you feel it or is it just an instinct
in the moment to do it.
Speaker 6 (01:03:15):
I just I think, just you know, I want to win.
It's just that moment where I want to win. And
my teammates they're you know, they're putting in my mind,
like my mentality to like we need to win, like
we need to win this game, like we're trying to
keep going, like we're not trying to stop right now.
Speaker 7 (01:03:30):
So I just think that you know, we get to
the moment you're not tired.
Speaker 6 (01:03:33):
You know this is we haven't played called long not play,
but a drill called long horn straight four minutes up
and down those thous timeouts know nothing. And that's why,
you know, that's what I think about the fourth quarters,
is this is a Long Horn.
Speaker 7 (01:03:44):
This is basically a doord that situation.
Speaker 4 (01:03:46):
Uh, you grew up in Mississippi. Did you go to
Tampa before? Have you been to Tampa.
Speaker 7 (01:03:50):
I've been a couple of times for only my first rodeo.
Speaker 5 (01:03:53):
But that, but but but you haven't been to a
thing like this.
Speaker 7 (01:03:56):
I've been to the Final four yet. It's my first
Final four.
Speaker 4 (01:03:58):
See, so there you go, and I know you're looking
forward to it, right, Yes, I am all right. Hey, congratulations, Matty,
appreciate it, thank you.
Speaker 5 (01:04:05):
So all right.
Speaker 3 (01:04:05):
Madison Booker withs Madison Booker on the postgame show after
a win last night for the Texas Long Horns that
sends them to the Final four in Tampa Bay. Now
you heard it there. Towards the end, they talked about
the minutes play. Let's go through them because there was
a couple players in that thirty minute mark. Madison Booker
led the team in minutes thirty eight minutes last night,
(01:04:27):
Shay Holly thirty five minutes. Both those players starters, and
Rory Harmon rounded out with thirty four minutes of action.
So yeah, going up and down the court, back and
forth in a game that was obviously about runs, the
Long Horns had a couple of them last night to
help them secure their first Final four since two thousand
(01:04:48):
and three. And now it will be the fourth time
that the Texas long Horns will be facing off against
South Carolina. And if you go through it, you remember
it's back and forth and back and forth. And I
went through this in my head. The last time I
was just locked in on who won the last game
was in twenty thirteen. Now this is a little embarrassing here.
(01:05:08):
Twenty thirteen, the Spurs of the Heat played and I
was going back. It was back and forth, back, and
it was game seven and it was the Heats turned
to win a game that was back and forth. No
team went back to back games, right, And I look
at the game Cocks and Longhorns, South Carolina line of wins.
Game one, game comes to the movie Center, Texas wins.
Speaker 2 (01:05:28):
Game two.
Speaker 3 (01:05:28):
Game is played in Greenville, South Carolina, the SEC championship
game in the tournament.
Speaker 2 (01:05:33):
South Carolina gets it.
Speaker 3 (01:05:34):
Now we go to Tampa Bay and it might go
back to hey, back and forth and back and forth.
You got it talking into existence, all right. Craig also
had time last night to talk to Rory Harmon, who
was one of the impact players obviously in the win
for Texas, ended up with thirteen points five assists, was
(01:05:55):
able to get her hand on two steals as well.
Speaker 2 (01:05:58):
And this is what it sounded like.
Speaker 4 (01:06:00):
Rory Harmon, who of course has been such a key
member of this all season long, comes over to join
us now and she puts on the headset. Now, I
just want to pick it up for a moment. Here,
here's the piece of the net that you just cut down.
There was it was it difficult to cut down.
Speaker 2 (01:06:15):
The ease the one that's good.
Speaker 4 (01:06:19):
You started off house of fire seven first quarter points
eleven in the first half. Did you feel a responsibility,
especially the way they were guarding Maddie early on, that
you were going to probably need to score more than
you normally do.
Speaker 13 (01:06:31):
Yeah, honestly, like they were giving me some good shots, honestly,
like those were my spots, my shots. Unfortunately I can't
make them all.
Speaker 7 (01:06:38):
I would like to make more than miss them.
Speaker 13 (01:06:40):
But yeah, I think when you know, Madison helps me
out and I help her out, like just getting each
other the ball, and you know, if they're going to
chase her off and put three to four people in her,
I'm gonna find a way to get opened, hopefully.
Speaker 7 (01:06:53):
Not down some shots.
Speaker 4 (01:06:54):
It has been well established that you want to guard
the best player, so everybody expected you to be guarding
Hayley vanl What was that situation, like, how did that
come to you as you were guarding her, because you
guys did a great job on her, even on the
switches whoever.
Speaker 5 (01:07:10):
Was picking her up.
Speaker 13 (01:07:11):
Yeah, honestly, that was the plan for sure. I wanted
to try to stay on her as best as possible. Yeah,
I'm going to pick myself every time when it comes
to guarding team's best player. I trust myself and I
know I'm.
Speaker 7 (01:07:23):
Starting on the ball.
Speaker 13 (01:07:24):
So when I was, you know, we have great post hedges.
I'm on the ball getting good ball pressure than now
everybody else is playing as your heart. Now we're denying.
Now we're getting a shot clocked by a violations. Now
we're getting five second counts in the press. So that's
just that's just how we play defense, all know.
Speaker 5 (01:07:39):
That is absolutely Now. I got to ask you about
the third quarter. They come back.
Speaker 4 (01:07:43):
They tied at twenty nine. First time they caught. Yeah,
that was at the halfway mark of the third quarter.
And you go on a thirteen to three run in
the third quarter.
Speaker 13 (01:07:51):
What was the difference we started playing defense again. I
think our momentum with our offense always comes like stems
from our defense, so like we're not really getting a whole.
Speaker 7 (01:08:01):
Bunch of buckets.
Speaker 13 (01:08:01):
It's probably because we're not really playing that hard on
defense and we like to go and transition like confuse them,
like be fast paced. But yeah, I think we just
kept our composer understood, like we just did a run
to play, execute, take what they're giving us, and we
did pretty good at that.
Speaker 5 (01:08:15):
All right, I gotta ask you this. I have to
ask you this.
Speaker 4 (01:08:19):
I've asked everybody else this about Kyla that place she
makes me steel and driving in and your teammates have said,
oh yeah, we've seen her do it. We've seen her
do it too, but you have to admit it's not
the most common place thing on the planet, especially against
a player like Sedona.
Speaker 5 (01:08:34):
Prints to get some of that size.
Speaker 13 (01:08:36):
Oh my gosh, I was so happy.
Speaker 7 (01:08:38):
I was so excited.
Speaker 13 (01:08:38):
There's actually a picture out there when we were like
screaming at each other. She knows she can get she
cannot have a lot of emotion, but I love seeing
that emotion during today's game, And I mean, man, I
know she's.
Speaker 7 (01:08:49):
Fast, she can move.
Speaker 13 (01:08:51):
For some of her side, she can move, and so
I'm just super proud of her for like leaving it
out on the court, and like the rest of my team.
Speaker 4 (01:08:57):
Of course, everything you've been through, not just the thing,
but everything you've been through to this point, the heartbreaks
and the excitement. Can you describe what the feeling is
right now knowing you're going to Tampa, knowing you're going
to the Final four.
Speaker 13 (01:09:10):
Yeah, during the TV interview right after the game, Like
I was trying so hard and not be emotional, but
it's really hard because when you look back and see
what you went through and which you're almost still going through,
Like you know, you still have like mental battles every
once in a while, just be vulnerable, like you're not
like we're not just all perfect every day.
Speaker 7 (01:09:26):
I still gotta word brace, so you know stuff like that.
Speaker 13 (01:09:28):
Like just to think I came back in ten months
and now we're going to the Final four. I couldn't
be more happy and just grateful and just happy for
my team and my teammates.
Speaker 3 (01:09:39):
You brought Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone andrews
Zimbi filling in for Craig this afternoon. When we come back,
we'll hear more from the Texas Women as they go
on to Tampa Bay to take on the South Carolina
Game Cocks in the Final four. Will preview that game.
As the week continues, We'll also hear more post game
from Vick Shaeffer, Rory Harmon, and Madison Book are all
(01:10:02):
coming up next on The Craig Way Show on Sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred The Zone. Andrew Zimble in studio with you this
afternoon as we wrap up our number two of The
Craigway Show. If you miss any of the program, you
can go back and listen to the podcast on the
free iHeartRadio app. You also can make us your number
(01:10:25):
one preset. Set us as your number one pre set,
the same way you would set your presets in your car,
so you never miss another Craig Way Show two to
five every day right here on the Zone, as well
as the Morning Kick with Mike Harball, Harge and Mark
Henry the World's Strongest Man seven to nine am right
here on the Zone as well. And by the way,
(01:10:46):
programming notes, the zone is your home for Round Rock
Baseball and one oh three one will be your home
for Texas baseball. As the Longhorns get ready to take
on Texas State this evening, six point thirty four pitch,
you can hear it on one of three one. All right,
So we're gonna talk Texas women as they advanced the
(01:11:08):
final four. They advanced to Tampa Bay for the first
time since two thousand and three. Vick Schaeffer, Rory Harmon,
Madison Booker all moved to near tears when talking about
this team, when talking about the road that they took
to get to this point. So we'll hear all about
that in hour number three. But Brian Dable, the head
(01:11:29):
coach of the New York Giants, who many could say
is on a little bit of a hot seat, You
can make the case that he's on a hot seat
along with the GM and the rest of the front
office staff in New York after letting Saquon Barkley walk
out the door after the performance that they had last
season ends them up with the number three pick in
(01:11:51):
this year's draft. So it's Brown's okay, all right, it's
a correction. It's Titans, it's Browns, it's Giants, it's New
England to top four and it seems like it's the
obvious four players with Chador Sanders, cam Ward a duel
Carter the defensive end out of Penn State, and Travis
Hunter to do everything. Heisman winner out of Colorado. Now,
(01:12:14):
Brian Table had media availability today, as it is the
coaches meetings in Palm Sprains, Florida. He got asked about
the evaluation of Travis Hunter. Now, listen carefully to this.
Speaker 15 (01:12:26):
Well, it takes a long time to evaluate him because
there's a lot of tape. It's a really remarkable what
he has done and the ability to perform at that
level not really getting arrest So he's been a fun
he's been a fun player to evaluate and to meet
and talk with the owner.
Speaker 4 (01:12:48):
He's a heck of a player.
Speaker 3 (01:12:49):
He obviously is a heck of a player. He is
the closest thing that we've gotten to Deon Sanders since
Deon Sanders. And we look through the NFL history and
the guys that are multi position guys. Most of the
time you end up with guys like Julian Edelman, who's
a kick returner, pumper, returner who turns into a slot
(01:13:10):
receiver who then turns into maybe an eventual Hall of
Famer as Super Bowl MVP. But Travis Hunter comes in
obviously a better talent, obviously better athlete than Julian Edelman,
obviously better athlete than Devin Hester even and he's not
going to be a pump return kick return guy. He
is a guy who wants to play both ways. He's
a guy who wants to play in every down of
(01:13:31):
an NFL game. Now, I've been on the record, and
I'm I've gone back and forth with this because Mark
Henry on the Morning Kickoff, big Shadoor guy, Big Travis
Hunter guy, big Colorado guy. First time I ever talked
to Mark Henry, it was about Colorado football, shockingly enough,
w W Hall of Famer, and our first conversations are
(01:13:53):
is shod Door Sanders Bill for the Big twelve. Okay,
I have decided that I am pro Shador. I decided
that I'm pro Travis Hunter. I'm now firmly in that camp.
You can't sway me.
Speaker 2 (01:14:05):
I'm in. I'm all the way in.
Speaker 3 (01:14:07):
But I do get concerned about Travis Hunter because he's
obviously a better wide receiver than his corner. You're gonna
get paid more as a wide receiver. You look at
the money that Tee Higgins, Dumar, Chase, Justin Jefferson to
bring it in. And I do think that Travis Hunter
could be that type of receiver. I think he could
be at one point or another, an all Pro wide receiver.
(01:14:29):
I don't think it's gonna be year number one when
you consider the quarterback situation that the Giants are in,
where it is Jameis Winston and it is Russell Wilson
and there and by the way, yeah, Tommy DeVito, that
is your quarterback room. You're not gonna have a ton
of success in year number one, I imagine if you're
(01:14:49):
Travis Hunter. But on the flip side of things, you
need a stud corner and he is a good cornerback.
He's a guy who can play in multiple coverages. And
I've talked to guys who are of evaluating Travis Hunter's talent,
who are evaluating NFL talent coming into this year's draft.
They all tell me he's not the best corner in
this draft. He might not be the best receiver in
(01:15:11):
this draft, but he does have the most upside to
be both meaning that his ceiling could be or is
in some people's mind higher than anybody else. So when
Dable says, hey, there's a lot of film that we
have to break down.
Speaker 2 (01:15:26):
I kind of.
Speaker 3 (01:15:28):
I'm not kind of. I'm I'm calling him on this.
I'm calling his bluff because there's nothing really to break down.
Speaker 5 (01:15:36):
To me.
Speaker 3 (01:15:36):
You're either in on Travis Hunter or you're not. You're
either in on the idea that he can play both
ways and make an impact on both sides of the ball,
or you're not. Now, the thing about Dion Sanders and
the thing that has been kind of erased and swept
under the rug when he talking about the history of
Dion and what he did. He's an incredible athlete. He's
probably the best shutdown corner outside of Dereaul Reeves. I
(01:15:58):
would say Dion is the guy if you said to
me build a team and you got to build from
the outside end, he'd be one of those picks.
Speaker 2 (01:16:04):
Obviously.
Speaker 3 (01:16:07):
But Dion wasn't in every down receiver when he was
in the NFL. Deon Sanders was a guy who could
come in certain sets, but he wasn't in every down receiver. Right,
and if Travis Hunter wants to be in every single
down receiver and be in every down corner. That is
where I'm a little concerned. We get I'm all in,
(01:16:30):
I'm all in, but I'm a little concerned. And it's
not because I don't think he can do it. I
think there's a cardio aspect of it. You can't build muscle.
You need to be muscle if you're a corner. You
need to be able to take on blockers. If you're
a corner in the NFL, and when you're in the
same division as Saquon Barkley and the Philadelphia Eagles, who
are a ground and pound type of team, when you're
having to shed blocks from a guy like AJ Brown,
(01:16:53):
you gotta be strong. And I worry about the strength
of Travis Hunter, and there's nothing on film that's gonna
show me he's gonna be strong enough or not.
Speaker 2 (01:17:02):
All right.
Speaker 3 (01:17:02):
When we come back, our number three of The Craigway
Show rolls on Texas Women advanced to the final four call,
McCoy talks to Steve Sarkeshan about the newest starting quarterback
of the Texas Longhorns, and Vic Shaffer emotional after the win,
all coming up next to The Craigway Show. Stick Around
on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred of Zone A Texas.
Speaker 4 (01:17:23):
Square Halt, Final four Cardinal, Dribble it out, Texas is
going to Tampa.
Speaker 1 (01:17:28):
Have a Final four final score tonight A.
Speaker 4 (01:17:31):
Texas wore wards fifty eight, batist Horn Rocks forty seven.
Speaker 9 (01:17:36):
I know I'm not their world.
Speaker 2 (01:17:38):
What they are my world.
Speaker 9 (01:17:40):
They say, you know, it's not who you are, it's
what you do. This is say why, this is what
I've done on my mind.
Speaker 3 (01:17:48):
Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred of the Zone. Andrews Zim
will hanging out with you as we roll into our
number three of The Craigway Show. Hopefully you guys are
having an excellent afternoon. If you're a Longhorned fan, if
you're a women's college basketball fan, you're feeling.
Speaker 2 (01:18:05):
Pretty pretty pretty.
Speaker 3 (01:18:07):
Good today as the Texas Longhorns move on to the
Final Four, their first Final four appearance since two thousand
and three.
Speaker 2 (01:18:17):
It's been a while.
Speaker 3 (01:18:18):
Texas wins moves on advances against TCU. You heard craig
Way's final call there, fifty eight to forty seven is
your final in that.
Speaker 2 (01:18:29):
Win the Texas Longhorns.
Speaker 3 (01:18:31):
Wow, they played masterfully and we'll get to that here
in a second.
Speaker 2 (01:18:35):
I also want to do a programming note.
Speaker 3 (01:18:37):
Longhorn Baseball is tonight as they take on Texas State.
That game can be heard on one O three one
your home now for Texas Baseball Round Rock Express on
the zone going forward. Also news Max Blue Out for
the remainder of the regular season, according to sources, with
(01:18:59):
a thumb injury under underwent thumb surgery out at least
six weeks, according to Danny Davis from the Austin American
Statesman as well as Kendall Rogers from Division One Baseball,
So Jim Slashtangle is going to have his work cut
out for him as one of the hottest teams in
the SEC takes on a pretty solid Texas State squad.
(01:19:21):
They're a spunky bunch down there in San Marcos, right.
They're a team that is gonna give you the old
college try. They're gonna work to try to get this win.
Game is at the Dish tonight. It's the inaugural or
in the inaugural campaign with Jim Sloshtangle's the best twenty
six game start in twenty one years. Texas is his
(01:19:44):
highest number three in Baseball America's top twenty five D
one Baseball perfect Game in USA today Coach Bowl all
have Texas at number five, and they have a big
series this upcoming weekend against Georgia, another team that's near
the top of the SEC standings. And it doesn't get
any easier in the SEC. So you're out Max Blue,
(01:20:06):
who's going to step it up, Who's going to find
that power punch, Who's going to find that extra energy,
the extra run support that you need to win games
in the SEC? Okay, Texas women. Last night, it's a
game that we had circle on the calendar. It was
(01:20:26):
the Texas two step between two of the best teams
in the state, a team in TCU who was saying
that they were the new reigning powerhouses in the state,
the champions of the Big Twelve, the conference that Texas
exited last season and first year in the SEC, they
were a game away from winning the SEC tournament and
they were one of the best teams in the country
(01:20:48):
going on a run this year where they only lost
to two teams, Notre Dame and South Carolina, both teams
one regular season lost each in the regular season obviously,
and then in the SEC tournament to South Carolina that
would give you your three losses. Tc was trying to
become that fourth team. Natason Booker and Rory Harmon did
not allow that to happen, combined for thirty one points.
(01:21:10):
Kayla Oldacre added nine points to help the long Horns
advance of their fourth Final four in program history, the
first final four for Vick Schaeffer, his third Final four
appearance all time, first as the head coach of the
Texas Longhorns.
Speaker 2 (01:21:25):
Taylor Jones.
Speaker 3 (01:21:26):
We talked about her at nauseum yesterday about having to
play down low the front court battle between Taylor Jones
and Sedona Prince. She opened the scoring for both teams
in the first period with a layup in the paint,
followed by Rory Harmon sinking back to back jumpers, including
a three pointer. Texas led TCU seven to one halfway
through the first quarter. To close out the period, the
(01:21:46):
Longhorns showed their defensive strength forth. TCU had eight turnovers,
marked the twenty sixth time the Texas has held an
opponent to double digit scoring in the first quarter, thirteen
to nine lead after one the second quarter, mid range
Jumper jumped out to a fifteen to nine lead to
close the first half. The long Horns limited TCU to
(01:22:07):
twenty five percent from the field. Harmon led the team
with eleven points in two steals, but Texas only led
by two at the half, twenty three to twenty one.
The second half tone it came again with Jones a
running layup twenty five to twenty one over TCU. After
forcing TCU's third in down violation, Texas regained the possession
(01:22:27):
and then jumped out to a thirty five thirty one
lead with three to fifteen left in the the third quarter.
The final minutes, Jordan Lee Sega three point followed by
a Madison booker and one.
Speaker 5 (01:22:42):
Leads to the left pointing.
Speaker 4 (01:22:44):
Now the book were off a screen left baseline jumper
God and Teas fold.
Speaker 3 (01:22:49):
And I can tell you when that play occurred. I
was on my couch, I was watching the game. I
jumped up and I knew that Texas was going to
have this one. It capped off a ten to run
going into the fourth quarter, where Texas led forty two
to thirty three to start the final period.
Speaker 2 (01:23:06):
This is the play of the game.
Speaker 3 (01:23:09):
Post player Kyla Oldacre sank, a contestant mid range jumper.
Speaker 2 (01:23:12):
Then she stole the inbound pass.
Speaker 4 (01:23:14):
Dcud in bound the ball Heylee Van Lift lops it
up top for Prince, stolen from her, taken away by Oldaker.
Speaker 1 (01:23:20):
Here's Kyla driving in a score.
Speaker 3 (01:23:22):
It might not have been the prettiest play. It might
not be the play that got number one on Sports
Center's top ten. It did make the top ten. However,
it wasn't the number one play. It wasn't pretty. It
got the job done. The score led Texas to lead
forty seven to thirty six. Long Runs went on to
secure the spot in the first Final four since the
old three season, defeating TCU fifty four or fifty eight
(01:23:46):
to forty seven. But the Old Acre Coast to coast
play of the game was the talk of the town,
and it started with Madison Booker on the post game,
with our guy Craig Way.
Speaker 4 (01:23:58):
Joining us now on the post game not only a
long worn player, but also the most outstanding player and
in this region.
Speaker 5 (01:24:06):
Madison Booker, you have to help me here.
Speaker 4 (01:24:09):
How many times have you seen have you seen Kyla
make that move that she did with the steal and
outrun somebody like Sedona Prince to the end and lay
it in.
Speaker 6 (01:24:18):
I mean, it's not my first time, is your first
time seeing it? I feel like you've seen this before.
Speaker 4 (01:24:21):
I've seen, like I said, I told Shay, I've seen
a lot of practices, but I didn't remember seeing her
make a move quite like that.
Speaker 5 (01:24:27):
She does, you know she does.
Speaker 7 (01:24:29):
No, she does.
Speaker 6 (01:24:29):
You must have missed it. You must have been dried
so quick and she was going. I already made the LEO.
Speaker 7 (01:24:33):
But I'm not.
Speaker 6 (01:24:34):
Surprised from this. I'm not surprised for my teammate, especially Kyler.
I mean, she's a dog, she's a she's definitely a
paint disruptor, and I just love that today.
Speaker 7 (01:24:43):
I like the basket.
Speaker 6 (01:24:44):
Couple of days, you know, she's just you know, kind
of you know, but I think she really turned it
up today. I think she kind of shook off, you like,
the bad games, and she really came back out and
she was ready to play where her name was called.
Speaker 4 (01:24:55):
And really the post players needed to step up with
a player like Prince and thought they did it. But
it was really stout team defense up all the way.
What you guys did against Van Lyft, what you did
against Madison Connor.
Speaker 6 (01:25:08):
I mean the key weapons where yeah. I mean, hey,
that's just team defense. Also our coaches. He prepped is
very very well. We watched the own a lie just
you know on their stets, you know, like their personnel.
I mean we knew their personnel, we knew the plays
that were gonna run. We basically you know, was trying
to be sep ahead of them. And I think coach
did a great job.
Speaker 4 (01:25:27):
I've asked you several times about these takeover moments, and
I said, Dan left doesn't for tis even to get
the fourth quarter third fourth quarter games. I'm looking at
you in the fourth quarter and you had six critical
points in the fourth quarter to get the seventeen.
Speaker 5 (01:25:40):
Is it something in a within you.
Speaker 4 (01:25:43):
That that clicks in where you feel it or is
it just an instinct in the moment to do it.
Speaker 7 (01:25:48):
I think he just you know, I want to win.
Speaker 6 (01:25:52):
It's just that moment where I want to win, and
my teammates they're you know, they're putting in my mind,
like my mentality to like we need to win, we
need to win this game, like we're trying to keep going,
like we're not trying to stop right now.
Speaker 3 (01:26:05):
Andrews and will fill in it for Craig Way. On
the Craigway Show. As we roll on now, I do
want to hear from Vick Schaeffer because this is now
the third or fourth time that the Longhorns and game
Cocks will face off against each other this season. Split
during the regular season, game Cocks up one game in
the series of this year. Due to that win in
(01:26:25):
the SEC Championship game, Big Shafer got asked in the
postgame interview, how do you feel that you've played South
Carolina multiple times?
Speaker 9 (01:26:34):
I think in seventeen we had played them three times.
Also before we played him in the Final four. I
think that was our fourth time when we played him
in the National Championship game. So you know, we've we
obviously have. You know, we've had some experience with them.
We played really well at our place. We had a
(01:26:54):
bad quarter in the SEC tournament. They really came out
and put it on us the first half at their place.
So we have tons of experiences to draw from and
learn from. But again, we've got to learn and we've
got to be different. And you know, that's the thing
about their team Don's teams is that you know, you
(01:27:18):
know you're gonna get the same from them that you
try to impart on others too.
Speaker 5 (01:27:22):
They're gonna be tough.
Speaker 9 (01:27:23):
You know, They're gonna be aggressive, They're gonna be physical,
and if you don't bring an edge with you to
that fight, you ain't gonna be much fun. And so
I think that that's what our kids have come to
know and learn. I've known it for a long time.
I've had to you know, I've got several experiences with them.
So but you know, for a day, I'm gonna let
(01:27:44):
these kids enjoy this. Tomorrow we'll have a plan, and
there's no question in my mind these kids will embrace
the opportunity.
Speaker 3 (01:27:53):
This one is for all the marbles. I said, this
is the biggest game of the year, Texas and South Carolina.
I'm glad that it's the two teams in the SEC
that all year battled back and forth with each other
for supremacy of the ap standings for supremacy of the conference.
That it's going to come down to the winner of
this one moving on to the National Championship to play
(01:28:13):
the winner of the UCLA and Yukon. All Right, when
we come back, Longhorn Legend sits down with the sitting
head coach to talk about the newest quarterback on the
forty acres. All coming up next on the Cragway Show
on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Andrew Zim will hanging out
(01:28:33):
with you this afternoon as we continue to roll on
on the Craigway Show. Note to scheduling, So Texas Baseball
plays tonight Texas State six point thirty. First pitch here
the game on one oh three to one. That is
now your home for Texas Baseball going forward as of
(01:28:54):
the zone taken by the Round Rock Express, and then
Kavet FM will be we.
Speaker 2 (01:29:00):
Were Texas and USC South Carolina playing in the Final four.
Speaker 3 (01:29:06):
That game later this week Friday, six pm tip on
KVET FM. Al Right, so there is our scheduling, news
and notes. You can put all those stations in your
phone on your iHeart app as presets and you don't
have to worry about or do I have this station?
Speaker 2 (01:29:25):
Do we need to switch stations?
Speaker 3 (01:29:26):
You'll have them all set there for you make them
the presets one through four.
Speaker 2 (01:29:30):
Everywhere that you.
Speaker 3 (01:29:31):
Can hear Texas Athletics, you can hear on your iHeartRadio
app All right. We will also hear from a Vic
Schaeffer as he talks about the impact of his players,
why he fell to his knees, and he reflects on
his journey to get to this point with this team.
Speaker 2 (01:29:50):
Now they've been to the Allitiate a number of times.
Speaker 3 (01:29:53):
The first time that Texas is getting to the Final
four under Vick Schaeffer, the first time that the Texas
women are getting to the Final four were since the
three seasons, So we will hear about that a little
later in this hour as well. But Cole McCoy, Jay Gruden,
both guys who were in Washington with the Commanders then
(01:30:14):
the Redskins coach col McCoy. Now they have a podcast.
An episode came out earlier today, the Clean Pocket Podcast
with col McCay and Jay Gruden and Cole McCoy lender
Longhorn one of the most important quarterbacks of my lifetime,
not only on the forty Acres but just across college athletics.
Speaker 2 (01:30:38):
When you talk about college football in.
Speaker 3 (01:30:40):
The two thousands, Cole McCoy's name has to be spoken
about the same way you have to speak about Sam Bradford,
same way you have to speak about Tim Tebow and
Vince Young and Matt Liner and so on and so forth.
Cole mccoway is on the Mount Rushmore of Texas Longhorn Quarterbacks.
So when I saw that he had Sarkesian on the podcast,
immediately my years per cup because okay, anytime at the
(01:31:03):
University of Texas head coach speaks, when Sarkisian speaks, I listen.
When Sarkisian speaks, He's gonna give me a nugget. He's
gonna give me something. Maybe it's not everything I want,
maybe it's not a ton, but he's gonna give me
something that I can pick at, a little bit that
I can I can analyze.
Speaker 2 (01:31:21):
I can take right.
Speaker 3 (01:31:22):
And he spoke with Cole mccoay, a guy who understands quarterbacking,
and they talked about quarterback one, the guy who's going
into the twenty twenty five twenty six season trying to
take the Longhorns over the hump, to get them to
the point to win an out, to play for a
national championship, to potentially win a national championship, that guy
(01:31:43):
being Arch Banning. Sarkisian spoke to Cole McCoy about Arch.
Speaker 2 (01:31:48):
Talk about Arch. How important was him being able to
play three games last year?
Speaker 11 (01:31:52):
Huge man huge.
Speaker 14 (01:31:53):
I think first, anytime you're a backup and you have
to go into a game and really play in the game,
not the yeah, hey get in there and hand the
ball off and throw a couple of quick outs like
he had to play, which was good man.
Speaker 11 (01:32:06):
I think we saw some really these A.
Speaker 14 (01:32:08):
We saw athleticism that was probably surprised a lot of people.
Speaker 11 (01:32:12):
Be his ability to throw the d ball and the deep.
Speaker 14 (01:32:14):
Ball in our system and how important that is to
take advantage of as one on one opportunities was huge. Third,
the leadership, like this guy's got a charismatic active to
feel it.
Speaker 3 (01:32:27):
So it's kind of funny too when you hear how
quickly cob Koy moves off of the backup quarterback having
to play in the game, right, I wonder why that
could be. But he does talk about Cole, He talks
about arch Manning how important it is for him to
get those reps as a starter last season and to
be put in a position last year to get those
(01:32:50):
game reps, and it's, yeah, obviously it's important that you
want to get that game speed, especially when you have
a young QB who is going to take over the
program and try to take you to that next level.
There are things that arch Manning does very very well physically.
Is a gifted guy. I don't think he is anything
(01:33:12):
like his uncle's in that way. Eli and Peyton. You
go back and you watch the tape from their high
or their high school and their college days. They were
not nearly as large and they're not nearly as athletic.
Speaker 2 (01:33:21):
And maybe that's partly.
Speaker 3 (01:33:22):
Because of modern training, but it also might just be
the gene that arch has that he's much more like
his brother, his dad Cooper, who according to reports, was
a lot more like their dad Archie. Right, He's a
more athletic, more mobile type of quarterback. And Arch Manning
has put on a little bit of weight. When it
comes to the weight room, He's not, you know, the
smallest guy. You're looking at Peyton and some of those
clips from the draft combine and those clips from his
(01:33:46):
rookie year, it's a pretty slender individual.
Speaker 2 (01:33:48):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (01:33:49):
Ars Manning is not that he's a he's a pretty
cut guy you think about. Okay, Yeah, he has all
these intangibles on the field, but off the field, in
the locker room, it's very difficult to command a room.
Anybody who's done any public speaking will tell you that.
Anybody who's paid attention to college quarterbacks will tell you
that if you have an aloof QB, if you have
(01:34:11):
a quarterback that cannot command the room, if there's another
guy in the locker room that has to be the
alpha and it's not your QB, your team might be
in trouble. Did you see it happen in the pros?
All the time guys get drafted, they're expected to lead
the troops or expected to be a leader of men.
And if your quarterback is not that, maybe he's a
guy who likes to play call of duty. Maybe he's
(01:34:32):
a guy that likes to go out and doesn't do
the team camaraderie stuff. Maybe he's a guy who just
is a recluse. If you don't have a quarterback who
can connect with the team, you're in trouble. But you
hear Sarkisian talk about arch banning, and it's like, hey, no,
this is a guy that just just bleeds, just oohs
his charisma. He's a guy that can lead his team
(01:34:53):
on the field. And you saw that off the field
last year on social media. You saw it on the
field a little bit last year. The games that he played.
But that's a confidence booster. And again, you're looking for something.
You're looking for some angle, You're looking for something that
you can take away from what Sarkisian says to give
you a little bit more insight in the quarterback process.
A quarterback himself, I give quarterback coaches and coaches who
(01:35:18):
work quarterbacks a little bit more credence when it comes
to how important the position is. Yeah, obviously we know
it's the most important position in sports. Obviously we know
that you have to have a good one if you
want to win at the highest level. But when you
have a coach who was a college quarterback, pretty good
institution BYU, and he knows what great quarterback looks like
at the college level. When he says a arch man
(01:35:40):
has all the intangibles, yeah, part of it might be
coaches park and speak and most of it. Some of
it could also be, Yeah, it's my guy. I'm gonna
defend him. I'm gonna take it for truth, I'm gonna
take it for payd him. I'm gonna keep it moving,
all right. They also talk about the most hot but
the hot button topic right now in college athletics, which
(01:36:02):
is the transfer portal, and what the Longhorns are doing
in the portal, and how Sarkisian is going about it.
Speaker 14 (01:36:10):
The whole month of December, while we were in the
college football playoffs, it was essentially free agency in college football.
Speaker 11 (01:36:16):
Every player on our team.
Speaker 14 (01:36:17):
Could have went in that portal, and we had nine
guys go in at that time. That's the first thing
that comes to mind when I think a portal is
to make sure we keep the right players on our team.
When we deal with the portal, we're about filling means.
I'm about building our roster from the ground up and
bringing in high school kids, developing him on our program,
getting him engulfed in our culture, into our schemes. But
(01:36:38):
yet the portal has provided an opportunity to fill those voids,
and we brought in some veteran players that have been
helpful for us there.
Speaker 11 (01:36:46):
But we really don't major there.
Speaker 3 (01:36:49):
Which is the way to do it. And I brought
this up a little earlier. You don't want a major
in the portal. You want a minor in the portal.
You want to dabble in the portal. You want a
major in culture. You want a major in culture. You
bring high school guys in. You bring early graduates in,
you indoctrinate them into the way that you want things done.
You indoctrinate them in the way that you want your
(01:37:10):
program to run. You want to fit into the mold
that we are building at the University of Texas. You
don't want guys who are mercenaries. Hey, this is the
third school in four years for a guy. Hey, this
is a guy who's bounced around. He doesn't find a
way to get along with his teammates or his coaches.
Speaker 2 (01:37:30):
You don't want that.
Speaker 3 (01:37:31):
You don't want any distraction brought in now with the
news that Ryan Wingo's sideline for the spring. Okay, well,
now that brings a little bit more of a microscope
onto the wide receiver room. So maybe you do go
into the transport you try to add a little bit
more talent there. Maybe that is a position group that
you're looking to add something too. And if you are, well,
(01:37:54):
did they fit the culture? We look at this in
the NFL all the time. There is the patriot its way, right,
the guys who fit the way that Belichick wanted things
to run. Yeah, I can go get an Ochocinco at
the end of his career. I'm go bring in a
Randy moss I, bring in outspoken allowed someone would say
a diva quarter or a wide receiver. But are they
(01:38:17):
going to fit the system? Are they willing to put
the ego? Leave the ego out the door, leave the
baggage at the door, and come into my system and
play for me the way that I need them to
to execute the way that I need them to.
Speaker 2 (01:38:29):
That is big.
Speaker 3 (01:38:30):
It's a lot easier to do that with a guy
you're recruiting out of high school than it is a
guy on his.
Speaker 2 (01:38:34):
Third team or fourth team.
Speaker 3 (01:38:36):
In some ways, it's a much more important to dabble
in the transfer portal. Go to it when you need it,
but don't go to it all the time. I said
that this is the protein bar of college athletics. Is
a transfer portal. Yeah, it might fill you up for
a short time, but you're not going to be able
(01:38:56):
to fill yourself up on it. You can't win consistently
only dipping into the transfer portal. There's gonna be teams
to try it. There's gonna be teams that are gonna
go far in other conferences, just rebuilding a year after
year after year. Thirty guys, forty guys out of the
portal every single season, and they're gonna try to compete
at the level to win national championships. And it's not
(01:39:18):
gonna work because you cannot microwave success. The Longhorns are
not microwaving success. Sarkesian refuses to try to do that.
He wants to build a culture. You can see it.
The proof is in the pudding. This team is on
their way to bring a championship back to Texas. All right,
when we come back, speaking of bringing a championship back
to Texas, the Texas Longhorn Women Final four appearance of
(01:39:41):
the first time since two thousand and three. Vic Shafer
has moved to tiers. Will tell you why on sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred The Zone. We'll hear from Vic Shafer here in
a moment about his impactful players and being moved to
near tiers. After the final buzzer sounds as the Longhorns
(01:40:02):
move on to Tampa Bay to take on USC. The
South Carolina Game Cox only USC remaining. The Game Cocks
in Tampa Bay in the final for their first matchup
in over a decade, making it back to the Final four. Well,
a lot of movement happened in college basketball. One of
those moves that was official today, So Kevin Willard leaves
(01:40:23):
College Park, Maryland to take the Villanova job. That a
hire happened Sunday. Well, the news today Texas A and
M's A Buzz Williams finalized a six year deal to
become the next head coach of Maryland. Now, the move
happened today brings a veteran head coach from the SEC
to the Big Ten. Marks one of the highest profile
moves of this coaching cycle. You go through some of
(01:40:46):
those other ones, Oliver obviously, Willard jumping to Villanova, Sean
Miller moving from Xavier to Texas, and Darian Devriez jumping
from West Virginia to Indiana. So the Texas A and
M fighting Aggies looking for another head coach versus jimbo Elise,
Mike Elko comes in, and Schloshneggle leaves, and now Buzz
Williams leaves. I don't know why anybody wouldn't want to
(01:41:08):
stick around to College Station. That's just a tough tough
spot to be in for the Aggies, all right. Uh,
it's Big Shaffer yesterday able to cut down the nets
for the first time at the University of Texas to
move on to the final four uh and play for
a play for a semifinal, try to get to the
national championship. Every single coach you talk to, every Division
one coach, men's and women's will tell you the hardest
(01:41:30):
game to win is the Elite eight matchup. The Long
Words had struggled to get over that hump, and now
they finally have. Now there's a lot of success on
the other side. Vick Shaeffer got asked in the final
moments when the buzzer rang and the clock ran down,
what was going through your head when you fell to
your knees.
Speaker 9 (01:41:49):
Like I said, I mean, you can want something so
bad for somebody and for some you know, for this team,
I wanted it really bad for him. And you know,
I'm I'm emotionally invested in what I do. It's not
a check for me. Like I'm in this game and
I see and it's fine, it's okay if that's what
(01:42:09):
it is, But it ain't for me. This is not
a check. This is who I am. Unfortunately, a lot
of people say it's not who you are, it's what
you do.
Speaker 5 (01:42:18):
But for me.
Speaker 9 (01:42:19):
It's who I am. I can't sugarcoat that. There's no
denying it. My family has suffered throughout the course of
time with time away from them. My kids suffered when
they were young because I was so invested with who
I was and what I was doing.
Speaker 11 (01:42:34):
For Coach Blair.
Speaker 9 (01:42:36):
But this is the life I've chosen to live. And
so when you're sitting there in the minutes are ticking off,
the seconds are taken off, and I have so much
pride for my kids, Like I'm so proud of them,
how hard.
Speaker 5 (01:42:51):
They played today.
Speaker 9 (01:42:52):
Like nobody, anybody that watched that game today when they
turned the TV off, they had to go, Wow, that
freaking team plays as off. Excuse me, but you just
have to be you have to admire them. And for me,
I was just giving thanks to the Good Lord for
blessing me with them and for that moment, because I
(01:43:14):
take it as a real blessing. You know, we just
these times are fleeting, y'all. People want to talk about, Well,
you've been here seven out of the last eight years,
and you know you didn't make it five of the years,
and but you know, we did make it two of them,
and they were pretty good. Teams.
Speaker 5 (01:43:32):
And but that's the media, right.
Speaker 9 (01:43:35):
I mean, everybody's got their their own opinion about things.
You know, when we walked out of the championship game
at the SEC tournament, you got people wanting to complain
about my offense and we can't make it to the
final four because of our offense. Well I've watched other
teams play and they're scoring fifty points, fifty four points,
(01:43:55):
and ain't nobody complaining about their offense. But that's just
the scrutiny that I guess I get, my team gets.
Speaker 4 (01:44:03):
I don't know.
Speaker 9 (01:44:04):
It's not very fair, but that's the world, right, that's life.
So you just put your head down and you go
to work. You do what's got you where you've where
you where you've gone. And you know what, in my mind,
it's it's it's it's.
Speaker 11 (01:44:17):
It's what's helped us win.
Speaker 9 (01:44:19):
My kids embrace it and they love it. And so,
you know, we can be better.
Speaker 5 (01:44:23):
Certainly, we can be better.
Speaker 9 (01:44:25):
Offensively, we can be better, and a lot of things
we can be better. Going to offensive board. We used
to be really good going to the offensive boards. Two
months ago, we were one of the best teams in
the country who got forty something percent of our offensivenesses,
we've kind of lost that edge a little bit. I
got to help them get it back in about a
three day time.
Speaker 5 (01:44:41):
So, but you know, I was just grateful and thankful.
Speaker 9 (01:44:47):
I felt blessed by the Lord, and I felt like
I needed to thank him in honorum makes sense.
Speaker 3 (01:44:51):
Big shave for the head coach of the Texas Women
falls to his knees, clearly emotional about this team, clearly
love and enjoys his players, but he mentioned that this
long warrant team is made to the Elite eight seven
of eight years. Madison Booker, sophomore, watched Vic Shaffer win
a national championship in Mississippi State and was part of
(01:45:13):
the team last year that came up just short. How
does it feel to get over that Elite eight hump?
Speaker 7 (01:45:18):
I know it.
Speaker 6 (01:45:19):
I mean I was trying to tell somebody it means
a lot to us, but I think it means a
lot more to coach Schaeffer.
Speaker 7 (01:45:25):
I mean, if you all just had a camera just.
Speaker 6 (01:45:27):
Kind of following around, you know, like the Dan Lyons
or Vig Shaeffer, I just think that you'll be the
gym all day and you'll be and his offense, watch
a film with him all day and just a dedication
that this coach has, and just like the want he
wants for us, you know, to be a great basketball player,
especially a great team like I think he deserves it,
like he puts in a word, I mean he's not
(01:45:47):
playing a minute right now. We are, and I just think,
you know, for us to kind of come out today
especially and played this great like U team, great offense,
and just play defense, I mean, like that's game of
the game from him, is defense, defense when it's games,
and just to be focused, like locked in like first
five minutes.
Speaker 7 (01:46:06):
I just think that means a lot to him.
Speaker 6 (01:46:08):
And I'm happy, you know, to be part of that
and to help him, you know, get to the final four.
I watched him the Missy State and I'm happy to
you know, be a part of it in Texas now.
But no, it means a lot to us, I think,
you know, when I also think about the summer workouts
to conditioning, like it's paying off, you know. I was
just thinking about that in the locker room, like dang,
(01:46:28):
I really been on this team all the time. We've
been through everything, conditioning, tired on the ground, locker room
gassed out, But no, I mean, these are the moments
that you know, you work for and you dream for,
and it's fun.
Speaker 7 (01:46:45):
But you know, sometimes you look back and like, dang,
we've been.
Speaker 11 (01:46:47):
Through a lot.
Speaker 6 (01:46:48):
But just also, just for this man, Vic Shafer right here, I'm.
Speaker 3 (01:46:53):
Happy to do it for him, and you see that
type of relationship. It was cool too because Roy Harmon
was one of the first players should climb up on
the ladder to cut the nets. She got asked what
was it like to get the directions from Vick Shaeffer,
because he's cut down his fair share of nets? What
was it like to get directions climbing the ladder.
Speaker 13 (01:47:11):
You know, he's always going to be looking after us,
for sure, in every situation, even climbing up climbing up
a ladder so which is actually kind of dangerous, but
he was going to be right there just in case.
So I'm gonna I appreciate him for all of that.
But that kind of just shows you what type of
person he is, not what type of coach, but what
type of.
Speaker 3 (01:47:28):
Person he is, and one of the best people on
the forty acres, one of the best coaches in college basketball,
one of the best men in college athletics. All right
when we come back, will wrap up our three of
the Craigway Shows. Sends you on your way. All happening
next on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone as we wrap up
another edition of the Craigway Show.
Speaker 2 (01:47:52):
Now.
Speaker 3 (01:47:52):
Craig Way will join us tomorrow afternoon from Tampa Bay
as the University of Texas had their send off today.
Teams should be traveling, should be getting there right about now.
Gonna join us maybe potentially from the arena, could be
via phone. We will find out highlighting previewing Texas and
(01:48:15):
South Carolina Friday six pm. Tip you can hear it
on KAVET FM. The FM signal will carry the game
right here on the Zone. Tonight is Round Rock Baseball
and on one oh three one it is Texas Baseball
as the number five team in the country of the
Texas Long Horns take on Texas State first pitch six
(01:48:37):
point thirty pm. Pregame begins at six fifteen airtime. Keith
Moreland and Roger Wallace will be on the call for
that one. We also will have an update on the
musical chairs of a college sports as their players moving
and grooving, coaches leaving and coming all over the place,
as the transfer port will wide open, and we now
(01:49:00):
have seven of the eight one seeds. Seven of the
eight one seeds on the men's and women's side of
things advance to the Final four. We mentioned this a
little bit yesterday, but it's very unique. It's the first
time since two thousand and eight that the men's side
of things has all the final four teams being one seeds.
And it makes for a funny fonder for office water
(01:49:24):
cooler talk because you always make fun of the team,
or you always make fun of the person who has
the bracket who just picks the higher seed throughout. And
I always laugh at ESPN when you're filling out the brackets,
it gives you the option to auto fill, and it
says like, do you just want to take the higher seed?
Speaker 2 (01:49:39):
Going through? Nine point.
Speaker 3 (01:49:43):
Percent of the time you say, no, I'm gonna have
an upset. I'll have this twelve seed b to five,
or I think that this Cinderella story will go past
the sweet sixteen and then teams like this years like
this happened where it is all one seeds going to
the final four on the men's side of things. On
the women's side of things that you know upstart Spunky
(01:50:06):
two seed Yukon is the only non one seed in
the final four. But on the mens side of things,
it's usually interesting staff for him. Ten best Ken Palm teams. Ever,
the ranking goes all the way back to the ninety
six ninety seven season, so about thirty almost thirty years ago.
Four of the top ten are playing in San Antonio
(01:50:28):
on Saturday. Those four teams being number two, Duke thirty
nine point six, Ken Palm rating number six, Houston thirty
six and a half, kim Palm Rating number eighth, Florida
thirty six kim Pom rating, and Auburn a thirty five
point two.
Speaker 2 (01:50:45):
They're the ten.
Speaker 3 (01:50:46):
Now, Ken Palm is the adjusting of your strength of
schedule and adjusting on how your opponents do. And this
is ridiculous. Those four teams who are in the final
four on the men's side. I did in San Antonio
this weekend. One hundred and thirty five and sixteen is
the combined score of Duke, Houston, Florida, and Auburn. Now, ironically, obviously,
(01:51:09):
the two teams that are in the sec Alburn and
Florida having to play each other. They didn't want an
all SEC championship, which I understand. I understand why the
schedule lakers did that. I understand why the bracketologists did that.
You got to try to protect them right, make sure
it's not all SEC, even though it is the best conference.
(01:51:30):
Proof is in the pudding. I will say, of the
four teams, the two teams that I'm rooting the hardest
for app ironically are playing each other, which was Duke
and Houston. When I was down the river Walk this
past weekend, Blue Devil fans already filling the streets, Houston
fans making the three hour drive to San Antonio already
fill in the streets. I want one of those two
teams to win. I don't care who wins, but that
(01:51:52):
is my pick. I'm picking that side of the bracket.
Two of my brackets I have Duke, and two of
my brackets I have Houston winning the entire thing. And
finally we wrap up the show on this we are
on Rogers Watch. It is the Palm Springs, the coaches,
the owners, they're all meeting in Florida, and Aaron Rodgers
is still unsigned and aren't Rooney the second The Pittsburgh
(01:52:16):
Steelers president and owner keeps saying he's hearing the star
quarterback is quote headed their direction.
Speaker 2 (01:52:22):
Quote.
Speaker 3 (01:52:23):
We keep getting positive signals about it, Rudey said on Tuesday,
the annual league meeting. So yeah, I say we feel
pretty good at this point. One of those signs the
quarter of Rudy is that Rogers and Steelers new receiver
DK Metcalf have had throwing sessions in California. He said, quote,
I would like it to be a good sign if
he wanted.
Speaker 2 (01:52:39):
To do that.
Speaker 3 (01:52:40):
The Steelers are in a very difficult position. If you
were listening to Colin Cowhert show earlier today on the Zone,
he was saying that it feels like everybody has moved
past Pittsburgh. The Pittsburgh is the team that you wanted
to have success. You expect them to have success. They
have a history of success, and yet the most critical,
(01:53:01):
most crucial position on the field, the quarterback position, continues
to go unaddressed. You have to also consider this, It's
been almost what two decades since they drafted Ben Roethlisberger,
and when you draft a quarterback as high as the
Steelers drafted Big Ben in a very good two thousand
and four draft. You say to yourself like, hey, this
is the guy that we have going forward. This is
(01:53:23):
our franchise QB. But when you have your franchise QB,
you don't put yourself in a lot of great positions
to go get another air apparent. You saw what happen
in New England with Tom Brady. You saw what happen
in Denver with Peyton Manning. It's taken almost a decade
for the Broncos to find the air apparent to Peyton
Manning in Denver. Only a handful of times in the
(01:53:44):
history of the sport have you ended up in a
situation where you have your quarterback and then your next
guy up is drafted there and you can have a
succession plan.
Speaker 2 (01:53:53):
You think about Green
