(00:00):
Join, I mean studio today isRob Lots, the dog professor from the
edge Field to Animal Care Center.Rob. Today, we're going to talk
about one of the common calls thatyou guys get at the edge Field Animal
Care Center, and that is,you know, my dog is trained,
but but what and how is hetrained? Right? Like, right,
(00:21):
We've we've dealt with this for aslong as we have trained dogs. You
know, everybody, everybody has adifferent concept of what a trained dog is
supposed to do or how they're supposedto act or whatever. And and anyone
who's who's dealt with me over timein working with their dog, they understand
that in my world there is notrained dog, right, And everybody's like,
(00:44):
well, what do you mean bythat? Well, training is a
constant state of living, Okay.Where people get this their biggest problems when
they have dogs with behavior problems orthis or that they have this concrete concept
of what a trained dog does. Why because maybe they've seen a trained dog
on TV, or their neighbor hasa trained dog, or they've seen how
(01:07):
well trained police K nine dogs areor anything like that. So they have
this idea that as soon as mydog can do this, that he's trained.
You know, we have that withhousebreaking. You know, a lot
of people are like, wow,he's gone, He's gone five days without
having an accident in the house. The skies open up, the angel starts
singing, and everyone says, he'shousebroken. No, he's not housebroken.
(01:32):
Okay, he's just getting in arhythm and a process of what they're supposed
to do and the routine that theyfollow. So then when the dog has
an accident a couple weeks later, because maybe it dug in the trash or
got in ate some grass or somethingoutside, or or it went from seventy
(01:53):
degrees to ninety degrees and they dranktwo extra bowls of water that day instead
of what they normally drank, andthey pet in the house or had an
accident in the house. So theneveryone's like, well, I just don't
understand what's going on. He's he'shouse trained, Okay, Well that de
yeah. So I mean Elon Muskis rich. Okay. Does that mean
(02:14):
he stops making money each day?No, he continues to move forward.
So, long story short, justbecause your dog can do this or this
or this does not necessarily mean thatthey are trained. And this is what
gets people in a lot of hairysituations, pardon to pun um when they
take their dogs out in public.Okay, you know it kind of goes
(02:36):
back to the one episode. Weknow you're allowed to do it, but
should you? Right? Um?The idea when we train a dog,
when we do basic training with adog, the process is is we teach
the dog a few obedience commands, the obedience commands that everybody talks about.
Okay, like, we get thecall, well, my dog is trained,
(02:59):
but he still jumps, he barks, he pulls on the leash,
you know, and I'm like, well, exactly what is he trained in?
You know, like you said,is he trained in the martial arts?
Right? Is that? What isexactly your level or idea? That
he is trained doesn't mean that hesits for his food ball, doesn't mean
that he sits for a treat, doesn't mean that he's house trained. What
(03:20):
does that mean? Okay, Sowhen we do our process of training,
the ten percent of the whole processof training is actually teaching the dog's commands,
right, Okay, When you teacha dog commands, the commands are
there just as a foundation. They'rea building block into a relationship that you
have with your dog. They're away that your dog can understand where within
(03:46):
this family pack they rank with theother members of the family. This is
what they look at. So ifI, the father of my family,
can make the dog sit, doesthat mean he's trained. No, because
he might not sit for my son, or my daughter, or my wife
or whatever. Okay, So thepoint that the dog a dog can do
(04:09):
a command is a very small smallpart of the actual training. Once we
teach a dog, when we teachcommands, the next step. If I
teach a dog to sit, orI teach a dog to heal, or
I teach a dog to lie down, now I have to take those command
and do what the other ninety percentof training is. And the other ninety
(04:30):
percent of training is desensitizing the dogto all the stuff that's going on around
him so that they will do thosecommands in any environment, any situation that
I could possibly put them in.And that's where the my dog is trained.
Butt comes in. Okay, mydog, it should be my dog
(04:51):
knows this command, but he's sureas heck doesn't do it when I want
him to do it, right,Okay, So I understand ninety percent of
dog training is once you teach yourdog to sit, fine, Can he
sit if you drop a piece ofcheese on the floor? Can he sit
while you're petting him? Can hesit when another dog walks into the room?
(05:14):
Can he sit when you a carpulls in the driveway? All right?
That's ninety percent of the training, okay, And that's the hard part
as a trainer. A lot oftimes that's the hardest part to teach people
because people are creatures a habit.Okay, Like if when you come and
pick your dog up from us,we'll show you. Look, this is
where, this is the commands,he knows, this is what he's been
(05:35):
exposed to, so forth and soon. That doesn't mean he's trained.
Okay, we send him home withyou. You have to move forward with
this training, not just be happywith where you are. And as people,
once we're get whatever it is intoa routine that we're happy with,
it's hard for us to break outof that routine and continue to progress forward.
(05:58):
And that's the biggest enemy to trainingand the effectiveness of how well a
dog remains trained is the fact thatpeople have to continue to be creative.
The best dogs I've trained in mypast were owned by the best owners I've
dealt with in my past because thoseowners weren't satisfied with Okay, yeah he
(06:19):
can do this now, but canhe do this? And they would set
up scenarios and they would practice thosescenarios and spend spend time working on that.
So it's only fair to your dog, you know. The biggest the
biggest negative I see in dog traininga lot of times with owners and their
dog is they don't expect very muchof them their dog, right, It's
(06:42):
it's like, Okay, well,as long as you do this, everything's
cool, you know. Yeah, but dogs are way smarter than that.
Dogs are way better than that, and they have so much more potential to
do so many great things. Youknow, people will sit back and they'll
watch a well trained dog do this, and they'll go, well, why
wonder why my dog can't do that. It's because you've never tried it,
(07:02):
You've never worked for that goal. You've become complacent and happy with what your
dog does and how they fit intoyour lifestyle at home. So then when
you go to the brewery or yougo out and visit and take your dog
with you, you're embarrassed because ofhow they act. Why, because you've
become complacent with how they act athome. You haven't said, well,
(07:23):
you know, maybe if we're goingto this new environment, there might be
other dogs, there might be otherpeople, there might be noises, there
might be cars, all this otherstuff. Maybe I should practice those scenarios
and use that situation as practice beforeI actually go and experience that situation.
And that's the actual ninety percent ofmost dog training. Yeah, anybody can
(07:45):
teach their dog commands, it's whatdo you do after that that really instills
in that dog and it makes itso much easier for the dog. Dogs
have a ten times better mental lifewhen they're prepared for situations humans do.
Yeah, you know, if youknow, look, I've been in this
situation before. I know how thisis going to go. I'm prepared for
(08:09):
it. Then I don't lose sleepat night if I'm getting thrown into a
situation where I'm not sure how it'sgoing to respond, how I'm going to
respond, what's going to happen inthat situation, Just like everybody else,
I'm going to have anxiety. Okay, So you're only working and making your
dog more comfortable giving it less anxietyby preparing them and being creative and preparing
(08:31):
them with these commands in different environmentsand working on those desensitizing exercises. I
mean, they're simple. It's everytime somebody comes to your house, if
you know. Look, Bob showsup at my house every day at four
o'clock. The dog knows he's goingto show up every day at four o'clock.
So I can make the choice,do I let the dog go crazy
when Bob shows up? Or doI take two to three minutes of when
(08:54):
Bob gets here at four o'clock topractice with my dog on how they're supposed
to act and make sure I maintaina set or maintain a down. That's
a situation throughout my day that Ican instantly turn into a training situation to
prepare for when somebody shows up whenI'm not ready for it. Right,
Okay, don't just be surprised. What's the statement? Don't be upset with
(09:18):
the results you get for the workyou didn't put in. Right, Okay,
It's that same same idea with dogtraining. So the best dogs,
the best dog handlers out there arethe ones that never stop getting creative about
the tests. Or the tasks thatthey can prep their dog to do with
a good foundation of obedience commands, really good stuff. If somebody wants to
(09:43):
