(00:00):
Welcome in the Dog Professor Rob Lustfrom the Edgefield Animal Care Center. It
is another Dog Professor podcast. Andhow you doing? Man? Thing is
good? Good? Can we keepthis weather for all of winter? Well,
I'd like snow between about Christmas timeand then it can go back to
this okay after Christmas? All right, all right, I'm down with that.
I've been doing a ton of stuffoutdoors the last few days and loving

(00:24):
it. Have some rain in theforecast, but but hey, with that
being said, I'll bet you've beenoutside with the dogs and maybe doing some
things, maybe doing some hunting. You and I talked a little bit about
some dunk hunting, duck hunting andthings like that. With that being said,
a great idea to start thinking aboutis micro chipping your pets for that
reason, to give them a littlebit more freedom and you a little bit

(00:46):
more security. Right. Yeah, this time of year, you know you're
going to be in and out,in and out, in and out,
and if you got you know, your pets have this idea that they like
to run and really get out thereand go. We're always getting questions about
micro chipping, you know, orwhen someone finds a stray dog, the
question is is it microchip or whatever. So micro chipping is always a good

(01:07):
idea, not just for your dogs. But I'm sure you can microchip your
cats also. But micro chipping isa very simple procedure. If you're getting
a new puppy, or you're gettinga you're adopting a new dog, it's
important to really consider this as anoption because it's such a widespread safety net.

(01:30):
And the idea with a microchip microchipis is basically, it's about the
size of a grain of rice. When we place it in the pet,
it's basically like getting a shot, okay, large needle, usually in the
extra skin around where you know puppiesor mothers or grab their puppies or kittens

(01:52):
around that extra skin around the topof the neck. We pitch that up,
put the microchip in there, banbang. You sign up all your
information to a database and basically allof your contact information is linked to that
microchip. And the majority of humanesocieties, dog pounds, veterinarians, all

(02:15):
those places that might come across yourpet if they get lost or leave usually
have microchip scanners or at least aconnection to the microchip database throughout the country.
So we'll find your stray pet.We scan them, find the number,
find where they belong, get intouch with the owners, and get

(02:37):
that pet back with the owners.Very simple procedure. The dog really has
no idea that it went on,but it's very simple. They also use.
Most microchips also come with a tagthat goes on your collar, So
if your dog has their collar on, it's very simple to see the number
and where they contact and everything else. But if they lose that collar and

(03:00):
lose that tag, then that microchipis pretty much in there permanently. And
that's the mo of most places thatcome across strays, as we scan them
right off the bat to see ifthere's a microchip in there and get them
home. Yeah, so it's agood thing to do. Is it very
expensive? I mean, how doesit work out? How's it work?
If a dog owner says, allright, I want a micro joph,

(03:20):
it's a one time thing. Usuallyyou can talk to your veterinarian. It's
not overly expensive for a lifetime worthof identification, you know, for years,
the identification on dogs, especially youknow dogs that you spent quite a
bit of money for or breeding dogsor whatever. You know, it's not
very expensive. Compared to everything else, or to compared to the value of
actually losing that dog. I mean, everybody's everybody's pet that they love is

(03:46):
invaluable, so expensive wise, it'snot overly over the top. I think
it's in the ballpark of you know, maybe fifty to seventy dollars, depending
on if you do your own paperworkand turn the paperwork in with the micro
or if it's all done with yourveterinarian. But it's usually in that ballpark
price point wise, and then it'sdone. It's never had to be never
had to do it again. It'son record and your pet runs off and

(04:13):
that there you go. It's easyto find that and if you need update
your information, you go to thedatabase and updated or is your usually,
as a pet owner will have accessto that database and to put in that
information and to sign up and youcan change out your information as you go.
So, do you guys recommend itfor all dogs? Yep, yep,
yep. That's the easiest way.You know, most people. For

(04:35):
years, most people relied on theirdog having their rabies tag on because that
was the one ident if it besidesputting your own personalized tag on your dog.
Tags worthy where the connection to allof your personal information. The problem
is is a lot of times dogslose tags, dogs that are out running,
they get caught on something and losethe collar or or whatever, or

(05:00):
somebody does some nefarious stuff and stealsyour dog, right, Okay. That
is the way that you can provethat that is your dog when they say
that is their dog, is thatyou have all that information, you have
that connection to that microchip that's inthere. Beyond that, you really don't
have a claim if you get inthat type of situation with a dog.

(05:21):
And unfortunately that's a pretty common situationin the world today as people grabbing up
these purebred dogs and stuff like thatand say, look, you know this
is this is mine? Do weeven there's an even the database now as
far as DNA, okay, aDNA database usually as a blood test.

(05:42):
So even if the microchip is goneor not working, there's another connection as
to that who that dog belongs toand where they belong. Right, So
can people put their dog's health recordsattached to that microchip file? Usually it
depends on the database or the softwarethat their veterinarians use. Some of those

(06:05):
do that different brands. There's threeor four different brands of microchips out there,
but it's more often just contact informationmore than anything else. And the
same way with the DNA, right, So that's good stuff. So if
somebody is interested, you guys dothat Edgefield. We do that at Edgefield.
