Speaker 1 (00:01):
Here we go.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
This is the Dog Professor Podcast featuring the Dog Professor
Rob Lust from the Edgefield of Animal Care Center. Sir,
how Wai, it's cold outside.

Speaker 1 (00:10):
The winter wonderland out there the day.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Not sure when you're listening to it looks like Christmas,
but yeah, really it's like, uh, it's a bluzzard.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
So yeah, so we got a little snow in Ohio.
But you wanted to talk a little bit about something
that that is very topical. You wanted to talk about
shedding and what to expect and how to deal with
all that.

Speaker 1 (00:32):
Well, yeah, this time of year, especially in this area
of the country, the winter cold weather, you know, your
people are dealing with dry skin and everything inside and
and dogs deal with the same thing. So everybody sees
the side effects of dry skin in their dogs by

(00:53):
all the hair that's laying on the floor their house
at this time of year and all the shedding that
goes on. So there's some things that you can do
to kind of combat and deal with that a little bit.
And we're we we've tried some different things in our
grooming department as we've gone along, and there's some nice
products out there now that that help with that. But
the biggest thing is your dog's skin health. I mean, obviously,

(01:15):
this time of year, the skin naturally dries out itself
because we're inside. The air is a lot drier, the
furnace is running, so we're dealing with a lot more
of a dry environment. So that basically dries your pet's
skin out. And the only way to get that oil
back in the skin is usually with a conditioner or

(01:38):
something when we groom them or bay them or diet. Okay,
diets very important as far as the thing that keeps
hair falling out. And I wish I'd found this out
before my hair when I fell out, but I don't
think it's the same. But is your dog's diet you
a dog for to with your skin and the hair.

(02:02):
You want a diet that's high in fatty acids, omega threes.
All of those things are are good for your dog's
diet and your dog's skin and hair, and that's where
the start of a good healthy skin and hair environment begins.
But the problem is a lot of people keep washing
that oil out of their dog's hair. Okay, the fatty

(02:25):
acids within the dog's diet works into the oil on
the skin. The oil on the skin mainstains moisture in
the skin, maintains moisture in the hair follicle because it
affects the root of the hair, so the hair stays
in the skin, does not fall out on the carpet.
Can't make it any simpler than that. But what happens
is when we bathe the dog too often with detergent shampoos,

(02:47):
we wash that oil off the skin, so it takes
time for that oil to build back in that some
of the hair dries out, some of the hair falls out.
You will get some natural build up this time of
year in your dog's undercoat, the hair that's closest to
the skin, because that becomes an insulation layer to cold weather.

(03:08):
Rain makes your dog kind of impervious to the weather
a little bit, and that starts to build up so
fast that a lot of that is what gets shedded
out into your house. But more often than not, the
majority of time, it's dry air and too often bathing.
My recommendations on bathing and we use when we have

(03:30):
dogs that come in. Now, it happened this morning in
our grooming shop. We had dog come in, itchy skin,
flaky skin, a lot of shedding, so we instantly start
to recommend something made for the skin. Oatmeal and alo
shampoo is what we use a lot of. There. There
are also some what's called de shedding shampoos out there,

(03:51):
and what these are is they're kind of high and
fatty acids, high in omega threes, so it helps to
condition the skin that way. Also, we usually recommend a
conditioner along with shampoo when we're bathing our dog this
time of year, but just lowering the frequency of bathing
is key with that. A lot of people don't get
grooming this time of year because of obviously the cold weather,

(04:13):
so they want their dog to have some hair and
stay warm and everything. But if you're bathing your dog
every week or every other week, it's usually too often
this time of year, so maybe once or twice at
the most a month using an oatmeal or alo shampoo.
It's important to leave that lather on the skin for

(04:34):
two to five minutes while you're bathing the dog. I
know most people, if they're throwing the dog in the tub,
they lather up real quick and then they rinse because
they don't want to deal with it. The dog's trying
to jump out of the tub and run through the
house and it's just chaos ensues. But when we do it,
we leave that conditioning shampoo on for at least two
to five minutes so that it has a chance to

(04:55):
work before we go to rints. Then we usually use
a conditioner on top of that. And your veterinarian might
even prescribe extra fatty acids this time of year, Vitamin
E tablets, Omega three tablets, anything like that that helps
to add that moisture back to your dog's skin. Now
we've got the shedding in the house. Not everyone has

(05:17):
the rumba that's cleaning up the shedding all day long,
which is a nice thing to have, but how do
we do it hacks to kind of clean up. Well,
one thing I've found out and where we have our
shedding the worst is usually in our cars. Trying to
get it out of the rugs and carpet and off
the seats and everything. Latex gloves. Throw some latex gloves

(05:39):
on rub that across your carpet. You'll be amazed at
how much that pulls up hair out of your carpet.
Little rubber windows squeeges for years, those worked really really
well too. You can take that squeegee on that rug
and carpet, and once you try it, you'll be amazed
at how much of that hair gets pulled out of there.

(06:00):
You'll run out of masking tape or any other type
of the tape when you try to do the tape
roller technique. But if you've got a real problem in
carpets and rugs, those squeegies and those late text gloves
work pretty good, but just constant maintenance. Pay attention to
your dog's diet. Talk to your veterinarian first before you
start changing diet or adding things as far as vitamins

(06:21):
or supplements or anything like that. And then look at
what you're bathing if you're bathing your dog at home,
if you're not and you're taking it to be groomed,
and talk to your groomer about the skin and hair situation.
They're usually on top of it more than anything else.

Speaker 2 (06:35):
That's great stuff, and if you need more advice on that,
you can certainly reach out to the Edgefield Animal Care
Center if you're around, tell them what they need to
do or how they can do that.
