Speaker 1 (00:04):
Back here on the Gambler with Adam Kauffman, and it
is time to continue our NFL team by team, city
by city training camp preview, season preview, really training camp preview,
that would be boring. We're getting into the specifics, all
the odds, the over unders, the totals, the projections, everything
surrounding the twenty twenty four season, regular season and beyond.
(00:27):
And it's time for the uh A pretty interesting division
at least at the top, and that is the AFC
West with of course, the two time defending champion Kansas
City Chiefs. There is no one, no one out there,
but I would rather talk to about the KC Chiefs
than our good friend Carrington Harrison, a host of the
Drive over at six ' ten sports Radio INKC. Get
(00:50):
them on Twitter at C dot Harrison. Carrington, How are you, Bud.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
I'm doing pretty good.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
There's not many people that would get me out of
I just.
Speaker 2 (00:59):
Lost in double over time.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
I missed the two point conversion on college football. Oh,
let's run it back, Let's run it back. But I'm like, no,
I can't run it back right now. I gotta go
on in New England.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
I gotta go on with my man, Adam Kaufman.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
So I just want to at least point out this
shows you the level of respect because I could have
ignored your phone callant you know it's that important. But
I'm happy to be on man. You know, I'm always
willing to make time to pop on the show.
Speaker 1 (01:27):
We appreciate it. Always good to have you here with us.
And my kids are eager to get that game just
hasn't quite happened yet, but they're they're gonna be rolling
in and creating, you know, dynasties and trying to get
themselves drafted and all that good stuff as well. So
if we have time on the back end, I'll ask
you about the gameplay in the meantime year twelve under
Andy Reid. Of course this is you know, chiefs are chiefs,
(01:47):
right when all of a sudden done last year playoffs
included fifteen and six, thirteen, seven and one against the spread,
and as we know, despite me picking against them, even
betting against them every step of the way in the postseason,
they ultimately got over the hump made it two in
a row. Now the question is can they make it three?
But really where I want to begin is with this Carrington.
If I had said to you middle of last year
(02:10):
when the Chiefs were, you know, kind of floundering. It
was looking like, ah, the offense isn't it's just not enough.
This just isn't their year. If I had said to you, then,
which has a better chance Kansas City winning the Super
Bowl this year or Travis Kelsey and Taylor Swift still
being together when a new season rolled around, What would
you have said?
Speaker 3 (02:32):
I would have said Taylor Swift and Travis kelcey. It's
funny because I mean I remember that first day like
it had just happened. You know, people had kind of
been talking about it, and they were sort of like
rumblings around it. And then somebody texts me that day
at like twelve thirty because the game was at three
twenty five, and they were like, hey, I just saw
Taylor Swift at the game, and I hadn't seen anybody
(02:53):
else yet posted on Twitter, but I knew the obviously
was about to happen soon. Probably about ten minutes later
Chester tweets it. It just goes completely crazy. I thought, hey,
it was a one time. Hey she comes to Kansas City.
You know, it's all for show, It's all for publicity.
Remember she had the movie that was just coming out.
I was like, oh, okay, well, you know, we'll never
see Taylor Swift again.
Speaker 2 (03:13):
Then she went to the Jets game and I.
Speaker 4 (03:15):
Was like, oh, I actually thought that NBC.
Speaker 3 (03:17):
Had paid her to be at the game because of
the race in New York City.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
Hey, let's have Taylor Swift at the game. It was like, oh, okay,
well then it's over. And then when she.
Speaker 3 (03:25):
Went to Thursday Night football Chiefs and Broncos, I'm like, oh,
that's love because if there's anybody that to watch Russell
Wilson play football, you really love this person. And then
you know, she started seeing her pop up around town,
like I know maybe four or five people that have
personally met her. You know, she's been to a lot
of local restaurants. She's shown a lot of love. So
(03:45):
I mean, I'm not surprised now that they are together.
But if you had told me week six, hey this
thing is gonna last, I would have told you that
you were crazy.
Speaker 1 (03:55):
Well all right, so you know, as we take this
thing to football obviously again, and it just feels like
the beginning of any other Chief season, at least under
Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid preseason win totals eleven and
a half. The schedule, in my estimation, I'll let you
weigh in, is relatively easy. They've won a dozen plus
games and five out of the six seasons with Mahomes
(04:16):
as the starter. There's obviously no value in betting them
to make the playoffs. If you are a conspiracy theorist,
a skeptic, you could take the plus four to fifty
on them missing the playoffs.
Speaker 4 (04:25):
But worth it.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
Yeah, No, I mean they're minus money to win the
division for a ninth straight year, plus three p fifty
to win the AFC, plus six hundred in some places
to win the Super Bowl. What is the outlook from
your perspective on twenty twenty four.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
I mean, I think it's the same outlook as everybody else.
I mean at this point, I mean I look at
the robster for the Chiefs. I mean, they might be
better on paper than they were at the end of
last season. Now they lude Lagerius need he goes to
the Titans on a trade. But if you look at
that wide receiver room.
Speaker 5 (04:55):
It's better you add Hollywood Brown.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
You had Daviere Worthy.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
I'm sure you guys saw the play weekend training camp
where Mahome Still that's sixty yards down the fields as
they've been worthy. So I mean, I think you can
make an argument that this offense is more complete than
they were last year. They were turned so many key
pieces off the defense last year. I mean, you guys
know in New England, I mean, the Chiefs are kind
of boring at least at this part of the season
(05:18):
because you don't have any position battles and everybody knows
that they're going to be good. So you know, July
is just, hey, let's work on what we need to
work on, and let's make sure that everybody gets to
the start of the regular season healthy. Everybody's really excited
for the game against Baltimore. You remember, so you know,
this is the third Super Bowl they won. The first
Super Bowl was after COVID, so it was it was
(05:42):
limited capacity. Last year, the Chiefs lose on opening night.
They lost to the Lions on opening night, so this
is the third time so home against the Ravens. Obviously,
there's the rivalry between those two teams. They played in
the AFC Championship Game. Two of the best young quarterbacks
in the NFL, so everyone has that first game.
Speaker 6 (06:00):
Marked, so Carrington, as we start to look at players
on this team from a gambling perspective, and when it
comes to props, last year was I mean, it was
a down year in the regular season for Patrick Mahomes
finishes with under forty two hundred passing yards, twenty seven touchdowns,
his lowest since twenty nineteen, fourteen interceptions, that's a career high.
(06:21):
But this year, the books are expecting Mahomes to bounce
back in this offense to be a little more high flying.
Look from what we've been using, be more so what
we've been used to over the years with Andy Reid
at the helm. But so Mahomes is passing yard prop
four two hundred and twenty five and a half. You
can get that at Caesars touchdowns thirty three and a
half yards leader and touchdowns leader across the league. He
(06:43):
is the favorite. Are you expecting with the weapons that
they've added for Mahomes to have a more Mahomes in season.
Speaker 3 (06:51):
I think you could argue last year, at least in
the regular season from a numbers perspective, but it was
the worst season that we've seen of Mahomes and I
don't think it was a product of him. I think
it was a product of the pieces that were around them.
We just talked about the improvements that the Chiefs have
made on offense, so I do think this is a
bounce back Yere. I'll take the over on Mahomes on yards.
Touchdowns are just way too finicky to me. I usually
(07:13):
try to avoid those kind of season long props, but
I do like yards. I think you try to find
value then on individual receivers, I would take the over
on Hollywood Brown.
Speaker 2 (07:23):
I think he's their.
Speaker 3 (07:24):
Number one wide receiver. You remember when they had Juju
Smith Schuster, he.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
Had almost one thousand yards receiving.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
The last time I looked, you could get a Hollywood
Brown at like seven seventy. I would take the over
on him. I actually think that davior worthyes over under
is a little bit too high, just given the Chiefs offense.
I mean, if you think he's their third wide receiver,
you didn't have to factor in Travis Kelcey. You also
got a factor in Isaiah Pichecko. Just whoever is the
fifth guy in your offenses. He doesn't think it's seven
(07:51):
hundred yards for the season, So I actually think he's
a little bit too high.
Speaker 2 (07:55):
This year. Those are just a couple.
Speaker 1 (07:56):
Of the bests that I like you mentioned Isaiah Pachecko
and circle back to the receiving game a little bit
more as well. But obviously such an an interesting weapon
within this offense, been around for a couple of years
now and looking at his props, you know, nine hundred
point five is the rushing yard line, six and a
half rushing touchdowns. He's actually twenty five to one to
(08:17):
be the rushing yards leader as well, if anyone wanted
to go really crazy with that. But you know, as
far as rookie year to year two, he split the
difference on both of those. You know, he was eight
thirty versus nine thirty five year one year two yards
five versus seven year one year two. In terms of
the touchdowns, what do we expect his workload to look like?
(08:40):
There's no Jerrick McKinnon, you know, Ceh Clyde Edwards, Hilaire's back.
But clearly this is the Pacheco show, and I should
mention he only played fourteen games last year.
Speaker 3 (08:50):
Yeah, I would probably take the over on to Checko,
but I just think there's probably better value and the
National Football League, so I probably would just stay away altogether.
I think we know sort of what his place is.
And I mean, if you get Mahomes the toys that
they went out to get them, you know, you get
them the fastest guy at the combine, you get Hollywood Brown.
Speaker 2 (09:10):
Who's gonna be hungry on a one year deal.
Speaker 3 (09:12):
I just don't know. I taking the running back is
maybe the right play. I mean, obviously, in fantasy he's
gonna get yards, he's gonna be involved in the offense.
But in terms of an investment over the course of
the season, I just think there's better value. I would
take the over again. I'm just not really high on
season long touchdown.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
Vest will do.
Speaker 3 (09:28):
You think it's really out of whack. So that's probably
how I would play Isaiah Tochecko this season.
Speaker 6 (09:34):
I'll give you one more here before we have to
break Travis Kelcey last year, another guy who you would think,
by just looking at the numbers, a down year in
the regular season, ninety three catches, nine hundred and eighty
four yards and five touchdowns. This year, the books expecting
Kelsey that age to show up a little more. Eight
hundred and fifty and a half is his over under
when it comes to receiving yards, six and a half
(09:55):
for the touchdowns. He's ninety three catches away from one
thousand in his career. This is going to be his
age thirty five year of age thirty five season. What
do we expect out of Kelsey? Do you think he
takes another step back here and they save him for
the playoffs kind of like what we saw with the
Patriots and Grimkowski towards the end. Or is it still
going to be this is Travis Kelce. He is the
(10:15):
number one target in this offense.
Speaker 3 (10:17):
I do see Travis Kelce taking a little bit of
a step back. I would say the two biggest reasons
why the Chiefs won the Super Bowl, I guess three,
their defense was really good. Mahomes stopped turning.
Speaker 2 (10:28):
The ball over. You mentioned earlier.
Speaker 3 (10:30):
That he had the most interceptions that he had in
his career. And then lastly, Travis Kelce was a completely
different player in the postseason than he was probably the
last six weeks of the regular season. He just didn't
have that explosiveness. And you mentioned Gronk. You remember how
Gronk just there was a time where Gronk would just
glide and move and then at the end he just
moved a little different. It was a little slower than
(10:53):
he used to be. I thought you started to see
that with Travis Kelce at the end of the season,
and then they had that buy the fact go by
at the end of the season where they didn't play
any of the starters, and then he just came out
against the Dolphins and just for three straight weeks just
was incredible. So I think they're gonna do something very
similar where you know, you know that this team's gonna
(11:15):
make the postseason, They're probably gonna win the division. This
team knows when to kind of accelerate and when they
know to take off the gas a little bit. I
would expect them to do something similar.
Speaker 2 (11:25):
I would just stay.
Speaker 3 (11:26):
Away from Kelsey altogether, but eight eighty does feel a
little bit low to me. Kelsey feels like another nine
hundred and twenty five yard season for six touchdowns this year.
So I'd probably take the over on Travis Kelce, but
I could see them kind of coasting him along over
the course of the regular season and then trying to
(11:49):
unleash him for the postseason.
Speaker 1 (11:51):
Yeah, no, I hear you. That dude let me down
way too many times last year in terms of single
game opportunities to want to go anywhere near his season total.
I think he's just he's he's a cross that marks.
He's getting up there in age, as you noted, and
he's gonna pick his spots, but he's gonna be woefully
inconsistent at least that's my expectation in terms of the production.
(12:11):
And you know, credit to the team's defending him in
the way they key in on them. But we're going
to continue the conversation Chiefs expectations for twenty twenty four
with Carrington Harrison again six ' ten Sports Radio out
in case will be back It's the Gambler with Adam Kaufman.
We were hanging out with Carrington Harrison covers the Chiefs
in really all of Casey's sports for six y ten
(12:32):
Sports Radio out there, and of course previewing the twenty
twenty four Super Bowl. Hopeful Kansas City chief season two
in a row? Can they make it three now? Last year? Carrington?
Of course we know that well, really if we look
back at the last couple of years in general, So
the Chiefs lead the NFL in scoring twenty nine point
two points in twenty twenty two. That dropped considerably to
(12:56):
twenty one point eight, middle of the pack fifteenth last year,
largely because of as we know, and we alluded to
it already a little bit, the inexperience the unreliability of
many in that receiving corps, which is why we've seen
a little bit of a turnover. That offense only put
up thirty one points three times last year. But large
part of the reason they were still in as many
(13:17):
games as they were and wound up winning the Super
Bowl is because an elite defense ranked second in the
NFL in the yards allowed and scoring in the regular season,
then held Miami, Buffalo, Baltimore, San Francisco to fewer than
sixteen points per game during that very entertaining playoff run.
As we look ahead to twenty twenty four, how does
(13:37):
the defense stack up?
Speaker 3 (13:40):
Their defense is going to be really good. They don't
have Lagerias need they traded him to the Tennessee Titans.
I mean, outside of that, you got Trent McDuffie, one
of the better young corners in the National Football League.
You have one of the best defensive linemen the bet
the d tackle in the league, and Chris Jones that
have a very talented young defensive lineman named George Carloftis.
I think he is a chance to be.
Speaker 2 (14:01):
The next Max Crosby.
Speaker 3 (14:03):
And this team has just done a really good job
of just drafting and developing in the cornerback room. I
think there's a lot of I wouldn't there's a calmness
to losing Snead given how good he was last year,
because fag has been so good at developing the defense.
I mean, this defensive coordinator took a mid round player
at a Louisiana Tech and turned him into one of
(14:24):
the better corners in the National Football League. And you
look at that room. Now, you got a lot of
experience and guys that played in a lot of really
important games over the.
Speaker 2 (14:32):
Last couple of seasons.
Speaker 3 (14:34):
So there's a lot of confidence in the Chiefs defense,
and it should be given how good they were last year.
I thought this at the middle point of the season.
I think the Chiefs defense was one of the better
units last year in the league. So if you say
Kansas City's offense, Kansas City's defense, San Francisco, et cetera,
and I think you saw that play itself out over time.
You got to remember in that AFC Championship Game, Kansas
(14:56):
City did not score in the second half. They won
that game because of their defense and their ability to
force turnovers and create opportunities for the offense. So I
understand why the offense gets a lot of credit. You
got Travis Kelce, you got Patrick Mahomes, Andy Reid. This
is certainly an offensive team, and with the additions that
you've made, but we're talking about one of the better
defenses in the league.
Speaker 6 (15:16):
So let's talk about a couple of those offensive editions. Carrington, obviously, Xavi,
you're worthy. You draft him out of Texas seven hundred
and fifty and at point five is his receiving yard
over under. Same thing with Hollywood Brown, who comes in
after they got him from Arizona seven to fifty point five.
Rashe Rice, He's up in the air as far as
his status goes with everything that's gone on off the
(15:37):
field this offseason. But who emerges as the go to
guy for Patrick Mahomes this season?
Speaker 2 (15:42):
That's a great question.
Speaker 3 (15:44):
I mean, I would say obviously Travis Kelce, just the
targets were there last year. He got one hundred and
twenty one targets. If I had to kind of.
Speaker 2 (15:51):
Divvy up the wide receiver room.
Speaker 3 (15:53):
I would say Rashi Rice won, Hollywood Brown two, Dave,
you're worthy. Three. There's a rookie tied end that Chiefs
fans really like. His name is Jared Wiley. He came
out of TCU. I mean, his physical measurables are really high.
But I mean, I think we know enough about Andy
Reid and Patrick Mahalis. The ball is gonna be spread around. Obviously,
Kelsey's gonna eat or she Rice is gonna eat. He
(16:15):
was one of the better wide receivers in the league
last year. But this is an offense that's going to
spread things around.
Speaker 1 (16:22):
So Dan and I were talking about this a little
bit off the air, but you'd be able to weigh
in better neither of us. Obviously. What gets in the
way of the three pet Again, we've never seen a
team win three straight super Bowls during the Super Bowl era, obviously,
So you know, for the Chiefs, who you know in
this neck of the woods, it's all about Chiefs versus
(16:43):
all the Patriots dominance of two decades and Brady and
Belichick and all of that stuff. That conversation, the whole
tone of it is going to change. Dramatically. If Kansas
City wins yet again, obviously does what prevents it other
than obviously injury?
Speaker 3 (16:59):
Yeah, I mean, I would say injury is probably the
number one thing. I mean, I I It's funny, it's
hard to kind of point to, you know, kind of how.
Speaker 2 (17:07):
You guys were in New England.
Speaker 3 (17:08):
It's hard to point to one thing of saying, hey,
this is what the weakness is for a team that's
been as good as Kansas City has been over the
course of the last few years. I don't think you
can necessarily point to one thing, more so than eventually
just other teams win. You know, you guys know in
New England, Brady was fantastic, but Aaron Rodgers got.
Speaker 2 (17:27):
His, Russell Wilson got his.
Speaker 3 (17:28):
You know, there were a bunch of guys who've got
Super Bowls in the middle of Tom Brady having the
best run that we've ever seen. Eventually, one of these
other young quarterbacks is going to break through. If you
think right now about the AFC, really the NFL in general,
none of these guys under thirty other than Mahomes have
any success, at least at a championship level. You know,
Allen's never been to a Super Bowl. Burrow went to
(17:51):
the one but lost. You know, Labar Jackson hasn't been
to the postseason. Jalen Hurts went to the Super Bowl
but lost the super Bowl. Eventually, one of these other
guys just get I'm not sure when it's going to be,
but just eventually that happens.
Speaker 6 (18:03):
Yeah, I mean even Joe Flacco got a ring in
the middle of Birdies runs. Yeah eventually, yeah, Yeah, every
dog has its day. But Carrington eleven and a half
is the over under for wins for this team that's
tied with the forty nine ers for the most in
the NFL. Just quick glance at the schedule, what was
your initial thought when that came out.
Speaker 3 (18:22):
There's a stretch there at the end of the season
that I think is pretty difficult where.
Speaker 2 (18:27):
They play three games and nine days.
Speaker 3 (18:30):
I don't have the schedule right in front of me,
but I know they play Houston. I think I think
it's Houston, Baltimore, and Pittsburgh. They played those three teams
in a very short period of time.
Speaker 6 (18:40):
Yeah, it's Cleveland, Houston at Cleveland home Houston, and at Pittsburgh.
And that's from December fifteenth to Christmas Day. On a
Wednesday one o'clock game on Netflix. Look at that, What
a time to be alive.
Speaker 3 (18:51):
Yeah, so that's probably the most difficult stretch that they
have of this upcoming season.
Speaker 2 (18:56):
But I mean it's Kansas City. I mean, you know,
it's just.
Speaker 3 (19:00):
They've only not hit the over one time since Andy
Reid has been that coach. Oddly enough, that was last
year and they won the Super Bowl. I mean, things
just don't change in Kansas City. I mean, this is
a team that's gonna win twelve or thirteen games, are
gonna be in contention for the one seed, and it's
gonna be really, really difficult to eliminate them from the postseason. Like,
you were gonna need to play very very well yourself,
(19:22):
and you're also gonna have to You're going to need
a little bit of luck on your side. You're gonna
need Kansas City to play poorly. Like think about the
couple of quarterbacks that have knocked out Patrick Mahomes.
Speaker 2 (19:32):
It has been Tom Brady and Joe Burrow.
Speaker 3 (19:35):
Like those are the only two quarterbacks since Mahomes has
been in the postseason to eliminate him.
Speaker 1 (19:40):
I wouldn't ask this of a lot of our training
camp guests that will have throughout here. But you're obviously
someone is pretty well vested or well versed in the
betting community. Do you have a favorite bet as it
relates to this team going into the season that you
would place.
Speaker 2 (19:56):
That's a great question.
Speaker 3 (19:59):
It honestly, it is Xavier Worthy under that's probably the
best that I like the most. I just think I
think right now the Mahomes number and the expectation of
the offense just has his number really high. You gotta
remember Andy Reid rookies. I mean last year with Rashid Rice,
I don't think he was very refined. I just don't
think the Chiefs had a lot of choices. I think
(20:21):
they had.
Speaker 2 (20:22):
To really force feed him the ball. I think if
you look at it, I made the.
Speaker 3 (20:26):
Point earlier he's their fifth option on offense. I just
don't think that guy gets eight hundred yards receiving this year.
I look at what last year Seattle had with Jackson
Smith and Jibba, so they had DK Metcalf, they had
Tyle of Lockett, Jackson Smith and Gibba had six hundred
and twenty eight yards. I could see that being what
Zavier Worthy does. In year one, he had six forty five.
(20:48):
He has three touchdowns. He makes a couple of big
plays in the passing game. He develops more in the
second half of the season than the first half of
the season. If you're giving me one bet right now,
if I had a free bet right now, actually takes
Xavier Worthy under all right.
Speaker 1 (21:03):
Carrington Harrison again covers the Chiefs and so much more
out in Kansas City at six to ten Sports Radio.

Speaker 7 (22:56):
Yeah, I gotta give shout outs to the Amazon people
for last year's Black Friday promotion.
Speaker 1 (23:04):
Love that. That's perfect. So let's talk about this team
here and expectations, as we know, coming off a bad
final year under Stay five and twelve. For anyone out
there wondering five to eleven and one against the spread,
I believe today was the first day of training camp
with the vests. They reported first year under Jim Harbaugh
(23:25):
after you know, just well for him, a great run
at Michigan and previous spots as well. I don't know
if it's just the name recognition because it's certainly to
me not the talent on the offensive side of the
ball in particular, but the preseason win total is eight
and a half with a very favorable schedule as well.
People are you know, anticipating, at least in the betting community,
(23:47):
a four win jump if you're on the over and
this team going above five hundred, do you share those expectations?
Speaker 2 (23:55):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (23:55):
I TechEd the'll be above five hundred, it's just or
can they be above five hundred? I think right now
nine and eight is realistic because a a lot of
questions about this team remain about the defense. I think
with Jesse Minner and Jim Harbaugh coming in, the philosophy
(24:16):
is better. I think that mentor will put the defensive
talent that he has in more favorable situations instead of
under Staley it was more here's my scheme and players
have to have to bend to the will of it,
instead of knowing your players and the talent level and
(24:38):
working your way and adjusting around that. So I think
that'll be a jump linebacking corps is better, defensive line
more solid. But I still have questions about the secondary,
and that was where a lot of the issues were
last year. So I think, you know, off absively still
(25:01):
questions about the receivers in the past and gave defense,
it's about the secondary at the moment.
Speaker 6 (25:08):
Joe, how long do you think it's going to take
for Jim Harbaugh to make over this team the way
he wants it to look like? And by that, I
mean a team that's you know, very smart, doesn't beat
themselves strong on the lines of scrimmage, probably run first.
I mean, the NFL has changed quite a bit since
since Jim was last in it, but I would assume
that he's still going to want to run the ball
quite a bit here with the addition of those two
(25:30):
running backs. But how long do you think it will
take for Harbaugh to get this thing looking the way
he wants it to.
Speaker 7 (25:36):
Well Man, it was first year in San Francisco they
got within within overtime of the NFC Championship game, and
that was without benefit of any offseason workouts because of
the lockout that year. So I think with him and
general manager Joe Ortiz, it'll probably probably year two or
(25:58):
year three before this roster is ultimately where they won it.
But they made a lot of gains this offseason to
where the line I think is a little bit more solid,
and I also think being a little bit more balanced
of an offense that's got to be fit justin Herbert,
(26:18):
I think a lot of people forget the last two
years he's He's had a slew of injuries, you know,
starting with that ribissue in the Kansas City game during
twenty twenty two, than an offseason on non thrown shoulder
problem at the end of the twenty two season. Last year,
two finger injuries, including one that ended up ending a
(26:42):
season with the broken finger on the throwing him. So
he's gotten he's gotten beat up a little bit compared
to his first couple of years in the league. And
I think if you run the ball, that takes more
pressure off him getting hit, you know, after passes or
scrambling and be hit. And you know, this is a
(27:04):
team that under Brandon Staley had the second highest percentage
of passing plays and now that you know that, that
didn't mode well for this offense. So I think being
a little bit more disciplined in the running game will
definitely benefit everyone.
Speaker 1 (27:17):
Well, let's go there and keep talking about this offense
because it has turned over, like obviously on the defense
you mentioned disaster last year twenty fourth most points allowed,
twenty eighth most yards as well. But maybe the philosophy
changes with Minter coming in with Harbaugh, and there's still
a lot of talent there Mac and James and Bosa
and Samuel and so many others. But on the offensive
(27:38):
side of the ball, Herbert, it's a really interesting line.
Thirty five fifty point five is his passing yards prop
after last year. He you know, the three years his
first three years in the league, he went for at
least forty three hundred yards and would have been even
higher if not for the fact that as a rookie
he missed two games last year, he would have gotten
(28:01):
to four thousand yards, but he missed four games due
to injury, as you noted before. So it feels like
a almost to some degree, it almost feels like a
trap of a line. But I think the reason for
it is one there's no Keenan Allen, no Mike Williams.
But obviously on top of that, harbass style, as Dan
(28:22):
and I were talking about a little earlier in the
show is run first, and so in terms of production
for Herbert, how much of an emphasis is going to
be on Dobbins if he's healthy, Edwards with no Eckler,
no Kelly, and Herbert just have him do less.
Speaker 7 (28:39):
I just think it. I think it'll all depend on opponent.
There's going to be some day sometimes when the running
game is going to have to going to have to
carry things, and there it's gonna be. There's gonna be
some days when you know the passing game is going
to be counted on. I think it just ends on
(29:01):
who your who your opponent is. I think early on
it's gonna be on the run. It's gonna be on
the run game more because we really don't know how
this receiving corps is ultimately going to develop. I think
Joshua Palmer, you've come to the right place.
Speaker 1 (29:23):
Sorry about that, Keep keep going.
Speaker 7 (29:26):
I think I think Palmer is when he has been
the number one or number two receiver, has played well,
but but he wasn't drafted to be a number one receiver.
Ladd McConkey, d J.
Speaker 2 (29:42):
Chark.
Speaker 7 (29:43):
When Johnson's gonna have to have a it's gonna have
to make a major jump from year one to year two.
And I think, you know, having some of the tight
ends like Hayden Hurst and Donald Parham is gonna gonna
help to and you know, hopefully Dobbins can catch some
balls balls out of the backfield too. I think in
(30:04):
terms of running game, they wanted to be more of
a two back offense, which really this running game that
this team has lacked since twenty eighteen when it was
Melvin Gordon and Austin Eckler. Austin Eckler was never supposed
to be a three down running back or a veget
between this tackles type back. Now they've got that with
(30:28):
Gus Edwards and you know, hopefully Dobbins if healthy can
be more of a change of pace guy Joe.
Speaker 6 (30:34):
For betters looking to bet one way or another with
Justin Herbert props Adam mentioned that number three thy five
hundred and fifty and a half yards is his over
under here. Can they look towards Greg Roman in his
style of offense? I'm just I just went through the
numbers here. In his over a decade plus of being
a coordinator in the NFL, he's never had a quarterback
(30:55):
throw for more than three thousand, five hundred yards. But
once again, on the other hand, though those quarterbacks that
he's worked with, Lamar Jackson, Tyrod Taylor, Colin Kaepernick, all
running quarterbacks, Justin Herbert can move when needed, but he's
more of a pass first guy. Obviously. What do you
think roman style of offense means for Herbert this year?
Speaker 7 (31:16):
What was Alex Smith's passing yards in twenty eleven with
San Francisco, Because I think the Roman offensive style may
be more of that twenty eleven. I don't think as
much game manager as Alex Smith maybe was in that system.
I think, you know, with Herbert and his ability to
(31:41):
throw downfield and his athletic ability, I think he's a
little more adept than maybe some of the quarterbacks arm
wise greg Is had in the past. But I think
in terms of passing yards and everything that way, I
would kind of I would kind of look at that
twenty eleven part of twenty twelve with Alex Smith as
(32:05):
far as maybe average passing yards per game.
Speaker 6 (32:08):
Yeah, so I got those numbers in front of me
right here for you. Sixteen games, completed, a little over
sixty percent of his passes, just over thirty one hundred yards,
seventeen touchdowns, and five interceptions.
Speaker 2 (32:18):
Okay, so maybe.
Speaker 7 (32:23):
Maybe I'm gonna be optimistic. I'm gonna just because of
the talent that Justin Herbert is. I would I think,
I think thirty six thirty thirty seven hundred.
Speaker 2 (32:39):
Is.
Speaker 7 (32:39):
It might be might be more logical, but it's you know,
it's gonna be a lot's going to depend to on
just how much how much his receivers and every everybody
can develop with them, because I mean last year, last
(32:59):
year was a little bit of a learning curve with
him with the receivers, but you know, he did he
did thrive pretty well in twenty twenty two when there
were about five six games when Mike Williams and Tina
Allen were both out of the lineup, and uh think
think they won three or think they did, think they
(33:20):
won three or four games when they when they were
both when they were both out. So you know, he's
he's had There's been times when he hasn't had a
lot of talented receiver to strives.
Speaker 1 (33:32):
We have Joe ready with us from the Associated Press
covers the Chargers. We have more to talk about with
this team, some more prop expectations as well. And you
know just how far above five hundred, as Joe talked
about before, can they be any realistic odds to make
in terms or to bet in terms of the playoffs
and and this team's future. We'll get into it when
we return. We have got Joe ready with us here
(33:54):
from the Associated Press previewing the Chargers twenty twenty four
season under first year head coach Jim Harboff. Of course
a very experienced head coach, but first year here with
the Chargers, and expectations are high. We mentioned earlier a
preseason win total of eight and a half, very favorable schedule. Still,
you can get plus money on FanDuel on the Chargers
(34:14):
to make the playoffs. Right around plus one twenty minus
one tend to miss at other books, plus three point
fifty to win the AFC West, And if you're dreaming
bigger than that, you can obviously get some huge odds
on them to win the AFC or even the Super Bowl.
If we have time, we can get into that a
little bit more. But focusing Joe on this really new
look offense, I realized that one it's just going to
(34:38):
be different because obviously you've got the new OC and
Greg Roman who comes in from Baltimore with those two
Ravens backs, and Gus Edwards and JK. Dobbins as we
talked a little bit about before. But also names are gone.
No Keenan Allen, no Mike Williams, you know, no Austin Eckler,
no Gerald Everett even you know we have got now
(34:59):
it's it's Josh Palmer and Quentin Johnston. Who are there?
DJ Shark is there now? Rookie Ladd McConkey, which is
quickly one of my new favorite name football love it.
You got will Disley hayden Hurst as well, and obviously
the backfield that we alluded to before with Palmer, I know,
we just finished having a conversation about how production could
(35:22):
be historically low by justin Herbert standards in terms of
passing the ball. But when I see an over under
of six hundred and seventy five yards for Josh Palmer
who had five eighty one last year in only eleven games,
almost eight hundred the year before in a full season,
and now unless something changes, he's the number one option,
(35:45):
how does he not get to seven hundred yards?
Speaker 7 (35:47):
Joe, Yeah, I think that he will because I think
with Greg Roman, you've got you've got an and with
him Harbott, you've got an offensive uh brain trust that
isn't going to that isn't going to be in the
(36:10):
run game, which I think was a case often under
under Brandon Staley and uh his past offensive coordinators Joe
Lombardi and uh uh uh the guy from Dallas whose
name escapes me now who is more calmore. Yes, I
(36:38):
think that I think that this is this is going
to be this is going to be more. They're going
to be more committed because Harbaught is also committed to
be physical and wear teams down and make sure that
they have the upper hand and that they're the ones
(37:00):
dictating the terms in the fourth quarter. You know, during
during off season OTAs in mini camp, I know people
want to dive into things, especially who's going to be
the fourth or fifth safety and all that. But under
a new coaching staff, because it's mainly in shorts, there's
(37:23):
a lot of things you can't tell.
Speaker 4 (37:25):
But with this.
Speaker 7 (37:26):
Team you could just you could see the attention in detail.
You could see the discipline and the messaging. And I
think the biggest thing is too, at the end of
practice they would do these fourth quarter conditioning drills to
just show that, you know, if you think you're tired
(37:47):
after an hour and a half or two of OTA's
just tak how you're going to be with seven or
eight minutes to go in the fourth quarter, and this
is this is the time to really shine and go on.
I think that probably the most underestimated staff member that
(38:09):
Jim Harbaugh brow with him from Michigan is strength and
performance coach Ben Herbert. I remember during the Rose Bowl
last year covering it out here, all the players and
coaches raved about Ben Herbert, who is not related to
Justin Herbert, but he is one of those guys that
(38:30):
I think will have this team in shape and everything
that you know maybe not this year, but I think
a couple to three years down the line that the
verb charging for late collapses and everything will hopefully be
a thing in the past, like kind of like what
clemsoning was early in the DeVos Sweetey tenure.
Speaker 6 (38:54):
Yeah, a lot to be excited. I mean as excited
as you can get about a strength coach. That's how
excited you should be about Ben Herbert. I've heard some
just awesome stories about behind the scenes stuff with him
at Michigan. But one guy that I'm excited about Adam
mentioned that's Lad McConkey Joe. This guy was just a
huge part of Georgia, of a Georgia team that won
back to back national titles and hadn't lost and didn't
lose a regular season game. I believe his entire career
(39:17):
as a Georgia Bulldog big game player. Just nine games
last year for the Bulldogs in his junior season, but
the books are expecting a big, big year out of him.
Seven and twenty five and a half receiving yards as
is over under. That is the highest mark of any
Chargers wide receivers heading into the season. But what what
should fans be expecting from this guy this year.
Speaker 7 (39:40):
I think he can definitely spread the field and he's
got the speed to be able to do that. Will
likely be the slot receiver in three wide receiver sets.
I think that he reminds me. He reminds me a
little bit of Mike Williams in terms of he can
(40:00):
really you need him to go deep and averaged, the
big yards per reception, he can do that. You need
the tight catch in trap down the middle, he can
do that. I think that, you know, maybe the past
couple of years we've got to see more of the
full range of Mike Williams. But I think you know,
(40:23):
with Lad McConkie, it's going to be whatever they need
him to do, he's going to be He's going to
be able to do it and hopefully thrived.
Speaker 1 (40:35):
So if you're looking at this team, and you're looking
at the group much closer than us obviously, I mean,
what are your expectations going into the year in terms
of a you know, among all the different things we've
talked about, whether it's the team reaching a certain height
and remember Justin Herbert has never won a playoff game.
In fact, has a thirty and thirty two career record
(40:57):
in his four years, or it's a certain player popping
off and absolutely destroying his betting lines. What's what's the
bold prediction from you?
Speaker 7 (41:08):
I think right now I'm looking, I'm looking at nine
and eight or ten and seven? Does does tenant? Does
ten wins in a jam packed and parody filled a
f C get the second or third wild card? I
don't know at the moment, and especially you know, looking
(41:29):
at this schedule, they've got to face to end. They
face the entire a f C West, faces the a
f C North, and that division is that division is loaded.
It's I think if you were to look at if
you were to look at mcconkee maybe for a FC
(41:52):
offensive Rookie of the Year, I don't know what the
odds on him are at the moment plus three thousand.
Speaker 1 (41:59):
How quickly is they had that one holstered?
Speaker 7 (42:02):
I did I maybe maybe take a flyer flyer on
that early. I think, you know, at eight and a half,
you can certainly play the uh over on over on
wins and probably right now they're what three point favorites
in Week one against the against the Raiders. This this
(42:25):
team has uh This team has won five straight, five
straight openers, so under two different head coaches, So I
think that it especially open it, open it at home
against Vegas. I'd uh I would uh, I would probably
(42:45):
take the Chargers and the end points type right there.
But uh you know, with the new coach system and everything,
as far as you know numbers and numbers and prop
on the urgent stuff, it's I think it's I think
it's too early, too early to see right now, but
(43:08):
at least Harbo's got a uh better gauge on this team,
maybe compared to his first one in San Francisco, because
Greg Roman was was saying it wasn't until like week
four or five of that twenty eleven season that they
had the entire offense in because because of the lockout
(43:28):
and uh heck most most teams didn't know their roster
until uh maybe one of that season too. So I
think he feels more confident and assured of this group.
And uh, I mean, there's there's a definite way It's
it's almost like Baltimore West out here with the number
of former Ravens. So those guys, those guys know the
(43:50):
hardbod brothers, and uh I think that I think they
I think there's been a lot of buy in from
this group.
Speaker 1 (43:57):
To Joe, after all of that, we've only got about
thirty seconds left. Is Harbaugh coach of the year worth
a flyer?
Speaker 2 (44:08):
I don't.
Speaker 7 (44:09):
I don't think right now. I think he would have to.
He would have to win the division or get the
twelve or thirteen wins in order in order to I think,
to be Coach the Year. And I think that right
now is a little bit too much for for this
UH to ask for this team, especially with Kansas City
(44:29):
and the schedule and everything.
Speaker 1 (44:32):
Joe ready covers the Chargers for the Associated Press. Get
him on Twitter at Joe Reedy. There's ore ee d
y Joe. Thanks so much, man, look forward chatting again
maybe during the season.
Speaker 7 (44:42):
No Brown, take care.
Speaker 1 (44:46):
We've talked to you about the Chiefs. We've talked to
you about the Chargers, Tonight, Raiders, and Broncos. As we
continue our NFL season previews in the AFC West, back
here The Gambler with Adam Kaufman. If you miss any
of the show, some good, solid, actionable information as far
as how to bet these teams. If you want to
(45:07):
bet these teams, check out the podcast. If you miss
any of the live versions, search that full name wherever
you get your podcasts where they're hopefully informing you. And
a guy who can inform us on these Denver Broncos
going under into year two under Sean Payton none other
than my good friend Brandon Chris Stahl, who is a
sports anchor and reporter at KOA, Colorado, part of the
(45:28):
iHeart Media family. Also a pretty good side hustle going
chief of content development over at Gorilla Sports. BK, what's up, Bud?
Speaker 8 (45:36):
What's going on?
Speaker 9 (45:37):
You're sure you don't want to get into Rockies putting
a twenty spot tying a franchise record for run score.
Speaker 1 (45:43):
No time for that tonight. Can't do it all right?
Speaker 8 (45:46):
Check in?
Speaker 9 (45:47):
I mean, look, not a lot of victory laughs that
the Rockies can't take these days.
Speaker 2 (45:50):
Or this year.
Speaker 1 (45:51):
Rather as in Game two, Todd Helton went to the
Hall of Fame, didn't he?
Speaker 8 (45:56):
He did go into the Hall of fame.
Speaker 9 (45:57):
But the Red Sox who posted their twelve shutout. That
was the eleventh time the Rockies have been shut out
this year, including five times by the exact score of
five to nothing.
Speaker 1 (46:06):
Not great. Question is how many times?
Speaker 2 (46:09):
Not great?
Speaker 1 (46:09):
How many times are these Broncos going to be shut out.
They're coming off an eight and nine year six ten
and one against the spread for anyone wondering, but in
fairness to them, they started one in five rebound defensively
more than anything else for that respectable finish. Of course,
they're in train at camps. You've been out there talking
to people, hanging out with players. We are looking at
a preseason win total of five and a half, something
(46:32):
that has steadily dropped since twenty twenty two from ten
to eight and a half to where it sits now,
with a roster that really has a lot of questions,
and those, at least for me, even though it seems
like we have an indication those begin at quarterback. There's
no more Russell Wilson. So you have the holdover in
Jared Stidham, a Jets cast off in Zach Wilson, and
(46:53):
the rookie dance favorite player in the world, Bo Nicks
out of Oregon. Is it gonna be Nicks week one?
Speaker 9 (47:00):
Is it should be at least And if it's not,
then there's real cost for concern for a number of reasons. One,
Jared Stidham just isn't good enough to truly separate, and
you understand how camp battles work. Coaches can stack the
deck with how they call plays and the personnel they
give them even in team periods once they get into
pull pads or in the preseason, and the limited action
that they'll have. But also though Nicks is really smart,
(47:23):
he does process fast. He's the son of a coach
flash college quarterback. His dad played it at Auburn, just
like he did before transferred to Oregon. His grandpa, I believe,
played at Auburn as well and was a coach forever,
and so the game on the mental side comes to
him pretty easily. I when you talk to everybody going
into the draft, even if people had him ranked six
(47:44):
out of six, when you look at those guys that
all went in the top twelve, it.
Speaker 8 (47:47):
Wasn't because he couldn't process.
Speaker 9 (47:49):
And the biggest disconnect with Sean Payton and Russell Wilson
was certainly less physical and more the fact that Sean
would call a play and Russ would be quick to
try to improvise because he saw something or he jumped
out of the pocket to go make a play, which
he has done his whole career and I'm sure he'll
do plenty in Pittsburgh. And so because bo Knicks is
smart and does get the ball out fast thinking into
(48:10):
a second and third read and was drafted twelve, and
Sean Payton's gonna hold his hand, and we know a
rookie quarterback's best friend and rearleaining quarterbacks best friend is
a good running game. I think he's going to win
the job. I don't think he's just gonna be given
it the way Kayleb Williams was given it. We understand
why they're in Chicago. But I do think he's gonna
win the job because I think total package wise, he
is a better athlete and better, you know, a better
(48:33):
arm than Jared Stidham, and he certainly can process. And
there is a lot smarter than Zach Wilsons as a quarterback,
even though Zach has the you know, the biggest arm
of the three. So Bo Nicks is going to be
the starter in Seattle. I just think you will see
Sean Payton hold his hand so to speak, through the
first handful of games which are winnable, although there are
some playoff teams in there and three road trips. But
(48:54):
Bonnick should be the starter week one in Seattle.
Speaker 6 (48:56):
So Brandon one of one of bo Nicks's biggest strengths
in college yeah both Auburn and Oregon, was that he
could distribute the ball to any of his receivers and
he doesn't really lock in on one guy. And I
do think that sets up well here with this Denver
wide receiving corps that doesn't have a lot of household
names on it for fans across the country. Courtland Sutton's
still there. You assume, depending on his contract situation, there
(49:18):
might be something that plays out later this summer. But
what do we make of this wide receiver corps? Who
emerges as the go to guy for bow Nicks or
whoever's under center.
Speaker 8 (49:27):
That's a great question.
Speaker 9 (49:28):
And we do know Courtland Sutton's name, and he had
a career high ten touchdowns last.
Speaker 8 (49:34):
Year, but a lot of that came off schedule, right.
Speaker 9 (49:38):
We remember the crazy catch on Monday Night Football as
Russ's running around, spinning like a top and then heaves
it up and Courtland's dragging his toes when they won
that game in Buffalo, And so it wasn't all that
dramatic necessarily, Dan, but it wasn't like he was locked
in even as a leading receiver. He only had seven
hundred and something yards. It wasn't even eight hundreds, and
(49:59):
so that's just not the production you want from a
number one guy.
Speaker 2 (50:01):
He wants more money.
Speaker 8 (50:02):
Because of the ten touchdowns, but they're quick to point
to the lack of production.
Speaker 9 (50:07):
Yard is wise and he doesn't separate like he did
before his knee injury when he went to the Pro Bowl,
I want to say back in twenty nineteen, and then
talking about knee injuries, they really like Tim Patrick's makeup.
And he's obviously coming off not one but two season
ending injuries almost a year apart in training camp in
acl and then an.
Speaker 8 (50:22):
Achilles last year.
Speaker 9 (50:24):
Made twenty million dollars to not play in that time.
But he was a guy that when he went down
the first time, I had coaches tell me he's not
only the straw that serves a drink in the receiver
room for the beating the Courtland Sutton and Jerry Judor there.
He's the heart and soul of our offense and in
a lot of ways of our team. He's kind of
a quiet leader. And so now everybody's seen him work
to get back and he's playing on.
Speaker 8 (50:45):
A minimum deal.
Speaker 9 (50:46):
But I think they love it if Tim Patrick could
show flashes of what he was when he led the
team in catches and touchdowns the two years prior to getting.
Speaker 2 (50:56):
Hurt in twenty twenty two.
Speaker 9 (50:57):
And so you've got those two guys probably battling for
the same snaps. They really like Marvin Mims Junior, who
made the Pro Bowl as a returner.
Speaker 8 (51:05):
He's going to be a much bigger.
Speaker 9 (51:06):
Part of their offense and that's something that.
Speaker 8 (51:08):
Sean Payton and his coaches failed to do last year.
Speaker 9 (51:11):
And when we would ask why is Marvin is playing more,
he'd say, yeah, it's our fault. And Marvin Mims had
I want to say, eight of the top fourteen or
something most explosive plays, and they all happened before November
in terms of just production down the field.
Speaker 8 (51:27):
And yards for catch.
Speaker 9 (51:28):
So he just needed to get on the ball more
and they didn't. So he'll help out. You'll see Troy Franklin.
I think at some point who was bow Nick's favorite
target at Oregon They thought was the second rounder that
somehow slipped to the fourth round, and then they signed
Josh Reynolds, who I'm sure plenty of fantasy players had
as a third or fourth wide receiver. That helped him
out some in Detroit, especially between the injuries that they
(51:48):
had to their top guys and with Williams when he
was out for gambling as well. So they've got those
guys and everyone else's you know, I don't want to
say project, but I don't think people are excited about
what David Phil's the fifth could do if he makes
the team, or little Jeordan Humphrey, who will certainly make
the team, but that's.
Speaker 8 (52:06):
Because he can contribute on special teams as well. So
it's an interesting mix.
Speaker 9 (52:10):
And then you throw the tight ends in there. There's
some talent there, Greg Golcicch. So they took in the
third round out of UCLA a couple.
Speaker 2 (52:16):
Of years ago.
Speaker 8 (52:16):
On the practice field the day.
Speaker 9 (52:17):
He doesn't practice a lot, he doesn't play a lot.
He wasn't injured at all at UCLA and he's only
been injured since he got to Denver, so they have
some weapons they, Like you said, though, Dan just aren't
household names, and I think that's why people are reluctant
to give the Broncos much love. And it's understandable. But
Sean Payton, I get that he had Drew Brees in
twenty fourteen, fifteen and sixteen when he went seven and nine,
(52:39):
but he's never been worse than seven and nine as
a head coach, and even last year with the inconsistencies
in terms of getting the offense run the way he
wanted with Russell Wilson, they still managed to win eight
games after that one in five start that you mentioned
at him, and so I think that I'd definitely like
to win total over five and a half. I'm not
going to put my mortgage on it, but i might
(52:59):
throw a couple bucks on it. And so they're just
going to find ways to win games. And they're playing
a third place schedule which will help in some of
the in the two cross conference matchups, whereas the Chiefs
have to play the top team in the respective divisions.
Speaker 1 (53:15):
BKA only a couple more minutes here and a few
things we want to get in. But circling back to
bow Nicks, like when Drake may at one point in
time here we were talking about the Pats last week
had passing props of right around twenty four hundred yards.
As soon as Drod Mayo came out yesterday and said
he expects per set to be the week one starter
books were quick to pull that down. I don't even
know that you can bet it right now. When it
(53:36):
comes to Nix, we're looking at twenty eight to fifty
point five, but knowing that he is a rookie, even
though it's a low total obviously, but that he may
not play a full season just because if things go south,
another guy gets an opportunity. Is that a stay away
number for you or would you bet at one one
side or the other?
Speaker 9 (53:53):
I think it's it's probably worth betting, not going crazy on,
but you throw a hundred bucks on it, and it
might be easy bunny, because if he does start every game,
what's the math on that one eighty a game or something.
I'm not great at math, but what's that breakdown to
if he starts seventeen games. I don't think he's gonna
be chucking it all over the yard. But if you
run this offense correctly, and you know, we talked about
the pass catchers, Julian McLoughlin out of the backfield and
(54:15):
Javonte Williams is slimmed down, and Sean Payton.
Speaker 8 (54:17):
Is quick to talk about that. They like the kid.
Speaker 9 (54:19):
They got from Notre Dame, while they probably won't throw
to him very much an estimate in the fifth round,
or maybe it's saman J p Ryan that beats Davonte out,
but they keep throwing the ball to him. They did
that last year. So that's bo Nixon's wheelhouse. That's what
he did organ get the ball out quick and let
the playmakers go make plays. So I wouldn't go nuts
on that number, but in a world where they want
him to win it, he should win it. I've had
(54:41):
defensive coaches tell me that bo Nix is the guy
you know when they aren't necessarily as invested. And so
when you hear that, you think, okay, he's going to
be the starter week one. And so at number like
twenty eight fifty, Like, I don't want to go crazy
on touchdowns. I don't know what that over under is,
but twenty eight hundred yards for a quarterback to start
seventeen games should be very, very attainable, even if it's
a rookie quarterback with plenty of hand holding.
Speaker 1 (55:04):
All right, BK, before we wrap, we got like thirty
seconds for this one. But I'm gonna ask Adam Hill,
who joins us next, to talk about the Raiders this
same question. I'm curious as to your local perspective. You
mentioned you would go ever so slightly over on that
five and a half wins. If I say to you,
who's going to be worse this year Broncos are Raiders?
Who is it?
Speaker 9 (55:23):
I think it's the Raiders only because of their quarterback
situation and then losing Josh Jacobs, who is certainly their
best player on offense, and will Devonte Adams even make
it through the season. But long term, if I'm in
the AFCUS, Betrick Moza was standing. Tom Telesco drafted great
in San Diego in LA. They just didn't stay healthy right.
But he was there long enough to draft a lot
(55:44):
of good players over a lot of years, and he's
gonna make that Raiders roster better in the coming years.
We'll see if Antonio Pierce can coaching, if they ever
find a quarterback. But I think the Broncos are better
than the Raiders this year, but I don't know if
that lasts very long.
Speaker 1 (55:55):
Yes, I could have asked who's going to be better
between the two of such a negative guy. Brandon Chris
Daal get him at Beat Denver Sports on Twitter again
anchor reporter over at Koa, Colorado, part of the iHeartMedia
family BK, Thanks buddy. So one team left to talk
about the AFC West, and that is the Las Vegas Raiders.
(56:16):
And as people know by now, Josh McDaniels, long out
of Vegas, fired back on Halloween last year, and the
man who took over Antonio pierce interim job earns himself
the real gig. He is the official no tag head
coach year one here of these Raiders, and Pierce, of
(56:38):
course five and four finished to follow a nine and
sixteen run for McDaniels over the course of his year
and a half whatever it was. But going into this
season a preseason win total of just six and a half,
and on top of that, a very difficult schedule based
on twenty twenty three win percentage anyway of the opponents.
And so you know what direction is everything pointing here
(57:02):
for the Raiders. Here to help us talk about it, obviously,
is Adam Hill, who has been on with us before.
He of course covers the team for the Las Vegas
Review Journal. Get him on Twitter at Adam Hill l
v RJ Adam, How are you man.
Speaker 2 (57:17):
I'm good.
Speaker 4 (57:18):
It's a little cooler here in Coasta Masha, California, that
is back in Vegas, and I think that's part of
why the Raiders are training down here there.
Speaker 1 (57:25):
You go anyway to beat the heat, nor just get
out of it entirely. But for this team there, you know,
I think it. Obviously, we were just talking about the
Broncos and we were saying to Brandon Chris tall Well
feels like it starts at the quarterback position. This team
as well. It starts at the quarterback position. Derek Carr
obviously is gone, Jimmy Garoppolo, the former Patriot, gone as well.
(57:45):
And now you have obviously the second year player who
was you know, pretty good when he got an opportunity
there down the stretch, and Aidan O'Connell. He was actually
really solid when it came to the touchdown interception ratio.
His final four starts eight to EUOPA went five and
five overalls. Rookie and Gardner Minshew, who I would say
projects to be the Week one starter or a journeyman
(58:06):
at this point pro bowler for the Colts last year.
What are your expectations under center?
Speaker 4 (58:13):
Well, first of all, I think you might not be
right about that, and I would have thought you were
right a couple of months ago, for sure. I mean,
they paid Gardnermentho a lot of money. They brought him
in here to be a veteran presence, and I think
that everybody expected right when he signed he was going
to be the starter. But I think all indication the
last couple of months have been that it's a it's
a quarterback competition, and it might be close to fifty
(58:33):
to fifty, but I think it's more like a fifty
fifty two to forty eight for eight and O'Connell at
this point. So I think he's a little bit ahead
him and he's getting all the first reps. He's going
with the first team. Now they're saying it's an open
competition and it's going to be just based on how
they performed in training camp. That's going to be the
decision that's made. But I think in the end he
probably has a slight advantage. They like the fact that
he was there last year. They liked the fact that,
(58:55):
you know, he's been a leader for his teammates, and
I think more importantly, they're realistic the worst case scenario
for this season. I've said it a couple of times
down some interviews. The worst thing that can happen this
year is that the Raiders go eight to nine once again,
and they've played Gardner Minshew for an entire season, and
they go to next offseason saying, well, maybe Aidan O'Connell
has something like you need to find out if he
(59:15):
has anything. If you're going to be a mediocre team,
which they probably are, you can't. You can't just wait
and see, well, maybe he's got something in the future.
You need to know now. You need to know if
you need to move on.
Speaker 2 (59:24):
So that's the decision you have to make.
Speaker 6 (59:26):
So, Adam, what does this uncertainty mean under center for
the wide receiving corps? Because I'm looking at props for
Devonte Adams right now. Just one thousand point five is
his over under for DeVante this season. He's gone over
this in five out of the last six years. The
one year he missed, he missed by three yards and
he only played twelve games in that season. That's back
(59:46):
in twenty nineteen. So what does this mean for DeVante
and the rest of the receiving corps.
Speaker 4 (59:52):
Yeah, I was actually joking with some other reporters today
that I think based on what you saw the last
couple of mini camp practices and even today, I think
Devanta Adams catches four hundred passes for like seven hundred yards,
Like it's just it's just combund to dump off though
it's about the line of scrimmage, see what he does.
Obviously I'm joking on that, but look, this is gonna
be an offensive faced a lot on unplaced close to
(01:00:14):
the line of scrimmage. They brought in Luke Getzi, who
really utilized the tight end well. They drafted another tight
end two years in a row. They have a dynamic
tight end in place from the draft, and I think
they're gonna be a team that you know, it's a
lot of motion, a lot of side to side, you know.
I think they're playing sideline the sideline instead of you know,
down the field. And I think he's gonna Tovntre's gonna
get his opportunities because he's Davante. But I don't think
(01:00:34):
it's a team that's gonna pushed them all downfield very often.
And I don't think they're capable of it because they
don't really have that kind of offense. They don't really
have that kind of quarterback.
Speaker 1 (01:00:41):
So does that mean all I should be on Jacoby Myers.
I mean, if he can stay on the field, which
is always kind of the question mark with him, you know,
six hundred and fifty and a half receiving yards as
a line doesn't feel all that overwhelming because he is
kind of that you know, short yardage dump off slant guy.
Speaker 4 (01:00:58):
Uh yeah, I mean I love what Chakoby's on. Everybody
in that room love in that building level that Chacoby
has done. I think he is a really, really, really
good player. But if if you're not gonna have enough
opportunity for Devontay Adams, you're certainly not gonna have enough
for Jacoby Myers. I think that's uh that that's just
kind of way it's gonna shake out. This is gonna
be a team that's definitely predicated on the tight end.
They're gonna love to get those guys at the ball
quite a bit. I think they're gonna head it off
(01:01:19):
to them quite a bit as well. And like I said,
it's a lot of a lot of bootleg action, a
lot of getting them, you know, out in the flat
see if they can down the ball and make plays
off field. Bowers and Mayor I think are both really
good at the ball in their hands, and they'll be
That's some of that for Jacoby Myers too. I think
there'll be some plays in there. I think the reason
you would take Jacoby Myers if you want to bet
an over prop, you'd be betting on the fact that
at some point the team is struggling, Devanta Adams gets upset,
(01:01:41):
he has to be traded out, and then Jacoby Myers
is the clear cut number one guy and in that case,
and you've got a great bet on the over. But
I think with all the different you know, the different
weapons that they have, because I do think the roster's
really good. I think there's a kind of weapons. I
just don't think the offense and the quarterback are in
place to make them work. I think you your goal,
I think would be a good Waty Adams out of
the picture if you want to have a Jacoby Myers.
Speaker 6 (01:02:02):
Bed, I definitely want to talk about the backfield with
the Josh Jacobs out the door. He signs a big
contract with the Green Bay Packers. It looks like it's
going to be the Zamir White show. Seven hundred and
fifty and a half yards is his over under. It's
heavily juice to the over at minus one thirty. Is
he ready for a full season workload? I mean, he
doesn't need a full season. He gets a seven fifty one,
(01:02:22):
but is he the guy in this in this backfield.
Speaker 4 (01:02:25):
Yeah, I think he's definitely gonna get the first shot.
That's the concern right now is how do they hold
up with the full workload. He's a good player, for sure,
He's a He's a really really good kid. I think
a lot of people are really hoping to succeed in
that room. But I think the questions are Kenny handle
a full workload of carries and can handle a full
workload of you know, pass protection and getting out in
(01:02:46):
the in the routes and catching the ball and all
those different things you have to do.
Speaker 2 (01:02:48):
To be a free down back.
Speaker 4 (01:02:49):
That's the big challenge with Samir White, and I think
I think he can, but we haven't seen him do it,
so I think there'd be some concern in terms of,
you know, you know, the fantasy football world of like
how how much he's going to be used as a workhorse.
I don't know if that's going to be the case,
but I think they want to allow him to do
that for as long as he can, and they want
to see if he's able to do that over the
course of a full season.
Speaker 2 (01:03:09):
It's just going to be I.
Speaker 4 (01:03:11):
Think a bit of a challenge. Especially they've got some
other some other mouths to feed. We mentioned some of
the guys in the receiving core, but they also brought
it Alexander Madison, who they like. They want to get
him the ball a little bit. They drafted a guy
and Dylan Lobby, a kind of a dynamic, kind of
a you know, kick returner, pass catcher kind of kid.
I know from from up there in the Northeast. So
I think they want to get him the ball a
little bit too. There's some things they want to do,
(01:03:33):
and I just don't know how often they're going to
just say, hey, look, let's let's give you twenty five
carries a mere white. I think they want to do that,
and I think the defense is going to dictate that
they do do that sometimes. But over the course of
the season, we'll see.
Speaker 1 (01:03:46):
So I asked this of our previous guest, and I
want your perspective as well, because I'm I'm you know,
for for show purposes. I'm thinking about making an exact
finish placement bet for the AFC West, And who do
you think is the worst team between the Broncos and
the Raiders. I think you could make a strong case
for either one. Our previous guest leaned ever so slightly
(01:04:08):
to the Raiders finishing last. But what about you.
Speaker 4 (01:04:12):
I think the Broncos are the worst team in the division,
but I'm certainly not a bias observer on this. I'm
pretty down on the Raiders for the most part, and
I think over the years I've mostly been more pessimistic
than optimistic on the Raiders that I've covered him. But
I'm not saying the Raiders are gonna win the division
or challenge the Chiefs or even potentially challenge with Targers,
and I certainly don't think they're a playoff team. But
(01:04:32):
I think the Broncos are gonna be pretty bad. I
think there's a lot of issues there. And yeah, there's
some optimism for the quarterback room, like maybe Zach Wilson
has some talent. We'll see what happens there. I still
like Jerreed s Didnamo to use a good player. They
draft Bo Nicks in the first round, We'll see what
he can do. Like there is some optimism that they
have a high ceiling at quarterback, but I don't think
there's any sure thing in that quarterback room. And I
(01:04:54):
think the rest of the roster you'll take the Raiders.
I mean, the Raiders defense could be a top five defense.
Certainly they should be in the top ten. They're gonna
be good on that side of the ball, and I
think if they can control the ball, not turn it over,
run the ball a little bit, like, there's gonna be
some games they win. And if you look at their
home schedule, there's certainly some winnable games on that home schedule.
The road schedule is pretty brutal, but I think there's
(01:05:14):
winnable games at home, and I just don't see the
Broncos having that many games where you look at it say, yeah,
they're definitely winning this game. I think there are some
of those of the Raiders. I think the Raiders are
the third place team in this division, fairly easily over
the Broncos.
Speaker 1 (01:05:25):
Adam Hill from the Las Vegas Review Journal get him
on Twitter at Adam Hill LVRJ. Always enjoyed chatting Adam.
If we have an opportunity during the season, we'll run
it back again, man, thanks so much.
Speaker 2 (01:05:37):
Sounds good anytime.
Speaker 1 (01:05:41):
Our number two at the Gambler with Adam Kamsman here
on WRKO. That means we are halfway home and almost
at the end of our work week. So go back
check out obviously all the shows throughout the week if
you want to hear more about the Chiefs, the Chargers,
the Raiders, the Broncos, and tonight start to delve into
the AFC North with some Ravens talk. Bo Smolka joined
(01:06:04):
us throughout much of the opening hour, and Dan has
reviewed the tape and he was right to call me
out behind the scenes because I did say I don't
remember saying it, but hey, I mean proofs in the pudding.
I did say that Lamar Jackson's season total for rushing
line was two seventy five and a half, which is
something he could do in like less than a month.
(01:06:25):
So glad that that that Dan you know, popped there
for a second, and you know when he heard it,
because it is, as we clarified, six seventy five point
five the lowest you can go on Lamar Jackson for
his rushing total as far as if you want to
bet over and I still think great line to seventy
five and a half, I'd put, you know, my kids
(01:06:46):
like college investment on her. But that's why I perked up.
Speaker 6 (01:06:49):
I'm like, where is that line?
Speaker 1 (01:06:51):
Good word? What offshore book is? What's the juice on that?
To seventy five? Yeah, you got to play minus like
nine hundred at five and a half.
Speaker 6 (01:07:00):
But I know what you were getting at too, And
you mentioned this because I think you were thinking of
six seventy five. He has gone over this in every
single season, yes, that he has played, even that that's
even in twelve game seasons. He cleared it by almost
one hundred right now.
Speaker 1 (01:07:12):
He's never had a Derrick Henry alongside necessarily, But you know,
Sarah Henry also isn't twenty six twenty seven anymore? Right,
So I do think that's relevant. But one thing that
we really, I said earlier, we probably should have done
last night, We're doing it tonight is putting a bow
on our AFC West conversation and looking at that division
(01:07:35):
from a betting perspective, not with people who covered these teams,
who may or may not have a little bit of
bias in them, but instead somebody in the betting community
last week we talked about the AFC East with Vson's
Jonathan von Tobel tonight. Another guy who appears on VSON
and does a great job on the sports gambling podcast network,
and obviously he has been with us a number of
(01:07:57):
times as well, and that is our friend Ryan Crane.
Get them on Twitter at Kramer Centric. Ryan, welcome back, man.
Speaker 2 (01:08:04):
Appreciate you having me.
Speaker 5 (01:08:06):
I mean, we literally seven more sleeps than we have football.
Speaker 1 (01:08:10):
I saw somebody tweet earlier that this because of preseason.
This tonight is the final Thursday without football until you know,
like the whatever February.
Speaker 2 (01:08:24):
How great does that sound?
Speaker 5 (01:08:25):
I mean, I just love how my social media feeds
are nothing but training camp highlights.
Speaker 1 (01:08:30):
It's beautiful and that. And you know, Kermit dolls over
at over at Raiders Camp as you sent me that tweet,
which is pretty amazing. So I we don't need to
like go one by one and get your opinion on
all of these, but I do want to inform you,
but also reset for the sake of our listeners. The
official show futures that we have given out for the
(01:08:51):
AFC West, and there are only four of them. Chiefs
over eleven point five wins, which you can get at
minus one Josh Palmer over six seventy five point five
receiving yards, minus one fifteen, Justin Herbert over three thousand,
five hundred and fifty point five passing yards, also minus
(01:09:13):
one fifteen, and a fun one that is chockey, but
still a nice number at plus three point fifty over
on DraftKings.
Speaker 8 (01:09:21):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (01:09:22):
The AFC West Division exact order and that is Chiefs, Chargers, Raiders, Broncos.
Let's start right there, Ryan, do you see this division
coming in any differently?
Speaker 5 (01:09:36):
You know, I was higher on the Raiders until I
saw that Kermit DOLLI we were talking about some fans.
Some fans brought a Patrick Mahomes Kermit the frogs Uppits
to training camp and the players had some fun with it.
I did see Patrick Mahomes trainer has responded saying, we
will remember this, so I maybe not the best thing
for the Raiders, but yeah, I think you're you're you're
(01:09:58):
on for me. The Chargers of the team that stood out,
I'm not sure if I'm totally locked up in on
them being the number two team, but yeah, it does
seem like if you want to talk about a retirement
fun bet, which one of these teams is going to
overtake the Chiefs in the division. I know it's minus
two thirty, but a CoV minus four hundred and you
would make sense.
Speaker 6 (01:10:20):
So Ryan, we were actually pretty shocked at just how
much the books like the Chargers this year. Eight and
a half was their win total. I mean, how what
do you make of Harbaugh's return to the NFL. Do
you think he immediately hits the ground running or do
you think there's gonna be some hiccups there on the way.
Speaker 5 (01:10:36):
I mean, I love his passion for football. I love
how he described football or training camp was like coming
out of the womb. And I get the excitement. He
just won a national championship. He's had success everywhere. But
I do wonder if this first year is going to
be riddled with a little bit of kind of like
the Broncos and Sean Payton, getting some of the guys
out of there, maybe resetting a little bit the receiving corps.
(01:10:57):
Certainly a lot of questions to be answered. I like
the job Farmer proph you gave out. It does seem
like he's being a little bit disrespected. But yeah, you know,
I think the Chargers are going to be a solid team,
and they're not going to be a team like they
were in the last couple of years that was just
all over the place.
Speaker 2 (01:11:13):
Couldn't stop anyone.
Speaker 5 (01:11:14):
Like this team is going to stop the run. They're
going to run the ball. Herbert's going to have some
opportunities to make some throws. I'm just not entirely sure
that a the defense, which is you know, has some
top notch players, but not a ton of great depth.
And then yeah, again, like what is this offense going
to look like? We've heard very smart people talk about
how the Greg Roman system is kind of archaic and
(01:11:37):
the you know, passed by in the NFL, and so
I'm very interested to see how it works out. I'm
not so bullish on the Broncos or the Raiders where
I would try to make a compelling case and if
I was going to be be the Raiders, because I
think the Raiders are another team that are going to
be very clear on what they want to do. They
have a lot of talent on the offensive side of
(01:11:57):
the ball, just not at the quarterback position. And I
kind of like the raw rah spirit of Antonio Pierce.
But yeah, i mean, look, if Harvaugh has a great
year and they like sneak into a wild card.
Speaker 2 (01:12:08):
Will I'd be surprised.
Speaker 5 (01:12:09):
No, But if this team ends up with five wins
and drafting hear the top again, that also wouldn't surprise me.
Speaker 1 (01:12:16):
So the Chiefs, there's no value obviously in betting them
to win the West. It's minus two thirty. You may
as well, if you believe in them, just go over
the eleven and a half wins, which you can get
again in the vicinity of even money, a little bit
minus money. But they've gone for twelve plus wins in
five out of the last six game or six years,
(01:12:37):
pardon me. With Patrick Mahomes as the starter, eight straight
division titles, it is the expectation. Would you go six
to one plus six hundred on them to three p.
Speaker 5 (01:12:48):
You know, it's an interesting like view into a heavy favorite,
because it's like, yeah, have the division price, you have
the number one seed price, which we know the Chiefs
aren't a great bet there because they don't necessarily need that,
and then you have the conference and super Bowl price,
and yeah, it does seem like if I was gonna
play the if I was bullish on the Chiefs, and honestly,
you you, I would play the division price. I know
(01:13:10):
it seems scary, but it just seems like one of
these best that's gonna be minus five hundred week nine
and it's gonna you're gonna feel bad that you don't
have a little investment on it. But I would actually
play the conference before I played the super Bowl.
Speaker 2 (01:13:22):
I would.
Speaker 5 (01:13:23):
I would snag a piece of the conference.
Speaker 2 (01:13:25):
And I don't I don't know.
Speaker 5 (01:13:27):
I don't know if this team can can get it done,
and I'm not a huge fan of I don't play
a lot of super Bowl futures, to be honest with you,
I'd much rather play the conference futures and then reset for.
Speaker 2 (01:13:37):
The super Bowl.
Speaker 6 (01:13:39):
So I'm sure you've been digging into different player props
and stuff like that, but what in this division is
jumping out to you?
Speaker 5 (01:13:44):
Well, all right now you're talking about like, so I'm
gonna give you some long shot stuff that I'm really
shocked at. The prices are still out there. First thing,
I'm gonna jump into most rushing yards. You were talking
Derrick Henry earlier, and certainly it looks like he's gonna
have a nice e's and potentially if he stays healthy.
But I'm gonna look to another player in the division.
Speaker 2 (01:14:05):
Nickname is Zeus.
Speaker 5 (01:14:06):
De mere White. Literally has no competition in Las Vegas.
This is a team that's gonna want to run the
ball a ton, and he is twenty five to one
to lead the league in rushing yards this year. See,
certainly there's some top alpha dogs you're gonna have to overcome,
but as far as projectable volume, there's not many backs
in the league that you can lock in the amount
(01:14:28):
of touches that the mere.
Speaker 2 (01:14:29):
White's gonna see.
Speaker 5 (01:14:30):
The one thing that could bring this one tumbling down
is probably just they're not very good and they're playing
from behind a lot. But if they are playing the
kind of ball they want to play, twenty five to
one is a very nice price to grab, and it's
a nice transition to the most touchdowns market, which if
you're going to play the meer White to have that
ceiling outcome, why not also grab his seventy to one
(01:14:53):
to lead the league in rushing touchdowns. And I'll leave
you with one more another seventy to one. We were
talking the Chargers earlier. Harvall loves to run the ball,
and they brought in Gus Edwards into a running back
room where JK. Dobbins got about fifty k guaranteed. They
drafted Vidal, who the coaches you know, who knows if
(01:15:13):
they're going to get into a rookie right away, And
they brought in Gus Edwards, paid them three and a
half million guaranteed, and all they've said is how much
they love his physicality, his ball security. So that to
me just reached goal line back. He's also seventy to
one to lead the league. So this is the kind
of stuff I like to play at this time of
(01:15:35):
the year. I like to play these deep markets. I
like to take the stabs of the guys that are
being missed. And honestly like the chance that Gus Edwards
and Samir White are both sitting at seventy to one
week four week five seems very unlikely to me.
Speaker 1 (01:15:50):
Before we let you go anything in the awards market
featuring players within this division that you like.
Speaker 5 (01:15:56):
You know, I would take a dark horse stab on
another raider. Davante Adams has been pretty vocal. I know
there's the rumors about him going to the Jets, but
he's been pretty vocal about Luke Getsy being a very
positive thing and if you look back to his career,
Davanta adams best year as a pro came in Green
Bay when.
Speaker 2 (01:16:15):
Luke Getsy was there.
Speaker 5 (01:16:17):
So I think this is a very positive thing. Davante
Adams still a true Alpha. You can get a decent
price on him and the offensive player of the year market.
I'm not seeing the price in front of you, but
I'm pretty sure he's in the fifty to seventy five
to one range. So for an alpha receiver again in
the world where they are down a lot, he's gonna
(01:16:38):
get the yards. So again, I'm slightly bullish on the Raiders,
a little worried about the quarterback, but again, these prices
just don't make sense.
Speaker 6 (01:16:46):
Yeah, I like the Adams look too. I think there's
an eighty to one on Fandle by the way right now,
which is just no yeah, an MGM actually, as I'm
looking across the board, but yeah, one one thousand yards
is just his over under. I mean, I haven't played
it yet, but man like, the only thing I'm scared
off of is just that I don't know who the
Raiders quarterback is going to be one, but one thousand
yards for Devonte Adams, even at thirty one years old.
(01:17:08):
Just feels just that just feels like a silly, silly line.
Speaker 5 (01:17:13):
Yeah, and honestly, like, look what Minshew, Look what Mitschew did.
If Mitschew is the guy, which it does sound I mean,
for my money, I would bet on Minshew. But you
look at what Minshew did last year with the guy
like Michael Pittman eleven and fifty yards and so you know,
it seems pretty likely that you can get a similar
target load, similar catch and similar efficiently efficiency at of
DeVante Adams. So that number does team offenly low again.
Speaker 1 (01:17:36):
