iHeartRadio app. Me a moment, subscribe to the podcast. Back
to Adam Kaufman and Dan Watkins.

Speaker 1 (00:30):
Back in here on the Gambler with Adam Coffin. Then
coming up in just a little bit, Jonathan Davis from
Vison will join us. We'll talk about the Four Nations
face Off Electric Tournament opening game between Canada and Sweden
going on right now in extra time as well. So
that's fun. US plays its first game tomorrow. But the
big news in the baseball world tonight and certainly central

(00:53):
to the Red Sox, is the reported edition of Alex Bregman,
of course, hated member of the Astros for a long
time three year deal one hundred and twenty million dollars,
as Bregman chose the Socks over a couple other suitors.
He is a multiple time World Series champion, twice there
with Houston, where he spent his entire career all nine years.

(01:15):
Coming up on his thirty first birthday next month, a
multiple time All Star. We are joined by a multiple
time All Star and World Series champ as well, formerly
of the Red Sox, a fan favorite and a popular
person whenever he joins this show as well, Jonathan Papplebond
on Twitter at the real j PAP fifty eight Pap,

(01:35):
how are you man?

Speaker 2 (01:37):
Doing well? Doing well in Life's gonna be a lot
more exciting when I go up to Boston and do
nessing games now, so that's for sure.

Speaker 1 (01:46):
Yeah, how much does this change?

Speaker 2 (01:48):
You know?

Speaker 1 (01:48):
Obviously there were concerns. We were talking about it early
in the show, even before this news broke just sort
of in passing about the Red Sox. Okay, if the
pitchers can stay healthy, but man, that lineup when you
throw an Alex Bregman into the middle of it. You know,
I know that he is not known for his average,
but obviously he's a consistent, you know, roughly twenty five
homer guy. He can flirt with one hundred rbi and

(02:12):
is you know, a reliable guy to get on base.
What does he do to what Boston is looking to
achieve here? Coming back from the bottom of this, you know,
the al East.

Speaker 2 (02:24):
Well let me tell you first off, foremost, I don't
give a damn about any of his stats. He's a
proven big leaguer, so I don't care about any of
his stats. What I care about is you instantly sign
a leader. You instantly have a leader on that team now,
and to me, that is so far superior than anything.

(02:48):
And this was a foreheaded monster deal that got through.
This is this is a monster deal. This is a
deal that is a it's a make up break type
of deal. And so I think they're going to also
need him for the next three years as well. You know,
there's opt outs in and stuff like that, but we
don't have to get in all that. But it's a

(03:12):
it's a major monster deal. And credit to Alex Cora,
Craig Breslow, and John Henry for laying his balls on
the line saying, you know what, these other guys I knew.
It took all of them and also Bregman to actually,
you know, you know, be willing to take that deal.

(03:35):
I think John Henry wade until last moment the pressure
was on Alex Bregman to sign, and he also knew
that John Henry wanted them, but to what costs? And
we now see that, and I think it's just a
great deal. It's a great deal for both of them.
He can still go out and prove himself and get
a no deal after this, and he can also now
has a chance to continue to win championships and put

(03:58):
rings on his fingers in this city of Boston, which,
don't get me wrong, will be nothing like winning in Houston.

Speaker 3 (04:08):
So, Pap, I've been reading some comparisons here with Bregman
that some people seem to think he can bring kind
of something that Dustin Pedroia brought to the Red Sox
with the leadership, his play both on the field and
the way he carries himself off the field. Obviously, he's
a multi time, multi time champion, he's a multi time
All Star, He's got a Gold Glove, a Silver Slugger.

(04:29):
I wonder, what do you think about that? If for
playing with Padoya for so many years, do you think
Bregman can bring that kind of presence to this team.

Speaker 2 (04:36):
Yeah, So, first off, he's already had many many of
comparison and that's a great point, you know. I mean,
in a big league that's what we do. We compare
to other big leaguers and so the day you're drafted,
you're compared to somebody. So to me, there's no better
person to be compared by. I mean, obviously, come on,
this doesn't joy. But second, I honestly think he's going

(05:03):
to stay at third base. You know, I don't think
he'll move to second base. I know we're not talking
about that, but I think he by All Star break,
I think yof Shehida is out and he plays third
base and Devors ends up DH and Campbell is our
second baseman. I think that it's going to work out

(05:24):
that way. But it's an instant sign to where he's
already got. Look, in the big leagues, you need street credit, right,
and so that's what he had. He had street credit
with Alex Cora, and so that's how they got the deal.
Talking okay, and then it comes to Breslaw and says, hey, look,
we got to try and work it down because I

(05:45):
know you want that, and so on and so on,
and then John Henry finally makes the last line, or
Craig Resler makes the last minute, hands down on his knees,
praying to John Henry, please let me lord, come on,
John Henry, please, this is last chance and credit to
John Henry. He put his balls on the line and
he signed the kid. And I like to see that.

(06:07):
I do not like to see these Look that's gonna
wait and I go to spring training. So many of
it is it is so detrimental because nowadays spring training
is a huge deal. Back when I played, and you know,
it was spring training was used to get ready for
the season. It's different now. But I really, really really

(06:32):
love the deal, and I really love the fact that
for the let's see, I got forty games I'm doing
on this and this year, that it's gonna make those
way more exciting. And you know, losing Ballhall is not
fun to report and go to games and watch.

Speaker 1 (06:46):
I'm looking at FanDuel World Series odds and Boston has
left up to ninth, you know, so basically middle third
of all of Major League Baseball with this signing, and
that's pretty significant. Ob in front of them in order, Dodgers, Yankees, Braves, Phillies, Mets, Orioles, Astros, Rangers.

(07:07):
I read all of that in the Red Sox sitting
at twenty four to one, which actually tied with the Rangers,
so you might say tied for eighth, but I read
all of those to point out that obviously I didn't
say Rays, I didn't say Blue Jays, you know. So
that has the Red Sox in the eyes of Vegas
sitting third right there in the middle of the American
League East. Do you view them that way or do

(07:29):
you think the ceiling is higher?

Speaker 2 (07:31):
Well, let me tell you something. Vegas Saint always right, kid,
because look here, I mean, they beat you sometimes and
you beat them sometimes AARs. Look at the Super Bowl.
They were way off on the Super Bowl. Vegas Saint
always right. So well, my point being when I say
that is there's a lot of this. You know, when
I bet baseball, I like to bet on about a

(07:56):
little less than about a quarter of the season. I
like to start thinking of like who can win it,
because you get baseball, you need to look at your
team in order. But I still think that, you know,
betting the Red Sox right now, you get great value
for your money because for them, they've got the team
that they've paid for it. They've got it on paper

(08:19):
to win and at least go to the World Series
to do one of those two. So to me, and
there's no doubt about it. And that's what they're striving
to do because John Henry's sick and tire of losing.
I know John, he's competitives hell, So that's where they
are at. And Craig Bresley walked into great, great time,
great situation with John Henry wanted to spend money because

(08:40):
he's tired of getting his ass kid.

Speaker 3 (08:44):
So there's been a lot of talks. As camp opened
this week, Pap that the Socks might actually go with
a six man rotation because they're if they're completely healthy
with Crochet, Bueller, Crawford, how Bao and Lucas Giolito. Is
that something that can actually work in the majors? I
mean we see it in but could it actually work
here in the States.

Speaker 2 (09:03):
Yeah? Actually I said that on Twitter or X. I
said that on X the day they signed what Lou
Maloney calls the Pig Crochet. Yeah, I'm talking about Crochet.
So and I and I and I think that I
said it way back then. I still believe it today.
I said, they're gonna be very very They're gonna take

(09:26):
this into consideration a lot. They're gonna be very pro
Let's keep these guys healthy. And I think you implement
a six man rotation, it's instant less less time as
far as in days, and less pitches as far as
the pitches per week. So any picture is gonna stay healthy.

(09:48):
I don't care who you are, You're just up in
the odds to stay healthy. I like it. Will they
implement it? I don't know. My guess is yes, I
think they will implement that. But I don't know. Would
that'd be like a prop Would that be like a
baseball pop we could bet on? Maybe? I don't know.
Actually I'm not allowed to bet on the Red Sox,
so I can't bet on anything in the Red Sox,
but I can still bet on baseball.

Speaker 1 (10:10):
How do you feel about the additions they've made, particularly
to that pitching staff? Did you know, as Dan alluded to,
I mean, it's guys' names, but guys with injury histories.

Speaker 2 (10:18):
Did they add the right guys? Yeah? I think they
added the right guys. And I also think that BEA's
got to step up this year. Beya's got to become
an ace, like like that's what you're supposed to be
like next Pedro Martinez. You know you got to come
into the ace that you know we know that you
can become. And then also you got guys like Lucas Gioluer,
former All Stars that could possibly come in and give

(10:41):
you one hundred and sixty innings or something like that,
who knows, you know, and be another All Star. And
youve got tarror House who's an All Star. So and
then you got the Pig you know that they just
signed and Crochet, so all very young arms, all healthy
most for the most part. You know, you news come
back on something. And you got Cutter Crawford two in

(11:04):
there who can easily give you one hundred and fifty anything.
He proved that last year. So I like it.

Speaker 3 (11:13):
Pap, How much do you know about Roman Anthony? He's
the number one prospect in baseball? Should fans expect to
see him opening day on the big league roster? Do
you think he still needs a little more time in
the minors?

Speaker 2 (11:24):
Well, they just signed. So what happens is they signed Bregman,
and it pushes everybody back in the minor leagues. Whoever
that person may be the next man up on the roster,
and so I think it gives him a little bit.
It gives the Red Sox a little bit more time
to let him mature in the minor leagues. And you

(11:45):
won't you will, we won't see him, uh this year,
maybe till September call up or something like that, possibly Pap.

Speaker 1 (11:52):
Before we let you go. You know. Obviously a lot
of the talk recently was Bregman Aeronato, what's Boston gonna do?
You gotta do something, like you said, the competitiveness of
John Henry, which maybe surprises some people out there listening
after how things have gone lately. But they do go out,
they make the splash. Do you think Boston's done? Do
you think there'll be another edition here during spring training?

Speaker 2 (12:14):
No, they're done. They're done, and I think next moves
will be you know, bullpen help. But as far as
as far as now, they're done. Now. During the season
trade deadline, I think it will be nothing but bullpen.

Speaker 3 (12:36):
I think they gotta put Whitlock back their full time PAP,
I mean, stops screwing around with him as a starter.
He could be a real weapon out of the pen
like he was a few years ago.

Speaker 2 (12:45):
They're down. I agree. I agree with you one hundred percent.
That's another great point, you know that that. I mean, look,
they're gonna have to get more help into bullpen by
the deadline. There's no question about that. And if they do.
And Bresla is it because he pitched in the bullfen
I pitched with him in the bullpen in Boston, so
he knows it. We all know it. But you know

(13:09):
that's him. He's a GM and I can only give
him the thumbs up or thumbs down on what he does.
You know what I mean.

Speaker 1 (13:20):
Once again, Jonathan Papplebond, I really appreciate you hopping on
and short notice as well on Twitter at the real
j PAP fifty eight.

Speaker 2 (13:28):
Like you said, it's.

Speaker 1 (13:29):
Gonna make Fenway a hell of a lot more entertaining
this year this summer. You know, whether you're on the
call or not, it's gonna be a fun place for
people to flock to and Bregman gonna be right there
at the center of its path. Thank you so much.

Speaker 2 (13:41):
Man.

Speaker 1 (13:41):
We'll bug you again soon.

Speaker 2 (13:43):
Okay, sounds good, y'all. Take care of a good.

Speaker 1 (13:45):
Night, all right you as well?

Speaker 2 (13:48):
All right, we will.

Speaker 1 (13:49):
I'm glad we're able to get that in there, get
some baseball talk because I'm respected. Yeah, you expect the
pat be high on Bregman. I mean everybody should be, obviously,
so uh, buzz.

Speaker 3 (14:00):
Around the Red Sox for good reasons, like right, what
a time to be alive. We've had Brad Marshan and
getting cheered in Montreal. We've had the Red Sox like
John Henry opening his checkbook for the first time in years,
and there's buzz around the Red Sox. I mean, what
at night?

Speaker 1 (14:17):
Not bad, not bad at all, Red Sox. Now do something,
do something on the field. Don't just win the off season?

Speaker 3 (14:25):
Yeah, so do you look at those that they did?
Did you bring up those odds? So the Socks are
eleventh right now to win the World Series at twenty
five plus twenty five hundred and.

Speaker 1 (14:33):
So I'm looking on FanDuel tied, they're tied for eighth.

Speaker 3 (14:36):
Tied for eighth. So that's moved a little bit. Oh yeah,
just moved. I think it might have just moved on
DraftKings too, So yeah, they're moving up. Nope, still draftings
to win the World Series and then ten to one
to win the American League Pennant. So both interesting numbers,
says I'm sure that's gonna increase here as we get
closer to opening day.

Speaker 1 (14:57):
Are there I just don't have in front of me?
Are there win total actions out yet?

Speaker 3 (15:02):
I'm guessing they probably took it down. No, they're up
to eighty six and a half on drafting.

Speaker 1 (15:07):
That makes sense. I would have guessed like I would
have been in the window. I would have guessed like
eighty six to eighty eight, just because you know, if
they're putting them firmly at third in the Al East,
it was going to be somewhere in that range.

Speaker 3 (15:21):
Yeah, I would say that they're probably also going to
be minus money. I would say, to make the playoffs
now that six teams get.

Speaker 1 (15:26):
In, I think that's right.

Speaker 3 (15:28):
So let's see what we got minus one oz five
Red Sox to make the playoffs undrafted.

Speaker 1 (15:32):
On the nose. It makes our next baseball conversation entertaining one.
That's for sure. Absolutely all those futures talk, Let's know
who would the Dodgers ad this time?

Speaker 2 (15:45):
Red Sox are involved.

Speaker 1 (15:46):
They're in the mix.
