Speaker 1 (00:00):
Pete Carroll, as we mentioned, officially announced as the head
coach of the Las Vegas Raiders yesterday, sounded every bit
of the Pete Carroll we heard here and witnessed for
the last fourteen years.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
He's got a new pair of kicks. I saw he did.
Speaker 3 (00:14):
I didn't notice the kicks.
Speaker 1 (00:15):
Yeah, yeah, they're not the Monarchs. They're got a little
more support.
Speaker 3 (00:18):
But here Pete's are no longer a thing.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
No.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
I mean, you know, new team, new look. And I
like him though. You know, he's looking really good.
Speaker 1 (00:27):
We're all familiar with Pete, but his role in Vegas
is going to be a little bit different. We're going
to get into that a little bit more later, he
said yesterday in his introductory press conference when asked about it,
because he had complete autonomy out here, you know, even
though he was collaborating it. But Beard as though he
had the final say on all moves here with the Seahawks.
But he said it will be a complete collaboration between
(00:50):
John spy Tech himself and Tom Brady a spy deck.
I know, I thought it was a piece of a
you know, surveillance equipment by when yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
About that, I wanted to make a Tom Brady joke,
but I we'll move on.
Speaker 1 (01:04):
Seahawks defensive end Leonard Williams was added to the Pro
Bowl Games roster yesterday in place of Philadelphia's Jalen Carter.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
He should have been there in the first place. That
was a snub to begin.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
With, but this is his second career Pro Bowl trip.
Bobby Wagner of the Washington Commanders he was added as
well in place of Philly Zach Bond. So two guys
that we are very familiar with and that we love
our heading to the Pro Bowl Games, which they are now.
We will have that actually for you at noon on
(01:36):
Sunday when they take place. So right here on ninety
three three kjr FM. And finally the Husky Women. They
were down fifty nine to forty six at the end
of the third quarter yesterday. They came roaring back outscored
the Hoosiers in the fourth quarter twenty four to fourteen.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
But that just wasn't enough.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
They ended up following seventy three to seventy and man,
that was that was a fun fourth quarter to watch though.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
It was just to watch the fight in them.
Speaker 1 (02:04):
I mean, they've got a great record this year, obviously
playing in the big tennis tough. Their next game is
Sunday at number eight ranked Ohio State. That's at two
o'clock and we will carry that for you over on
ten ninety am, so you can tune in for all
that action. They've been really competitive in their new schedule,
so I mean, it's not number eight ranked Ohio State,
(02:24):
but considering the travel implications and the new level of
competition they're facing outside of the former Pac twelve, I'm
impressed with what they've been doing so far. All Right,
we mentioned Pete Carroll. There was a lot yesterday. I
listened to the entire press conference, and like I said,
he sounds exactly the same, but there's going to be
a little bit of a change, you know, when it
(02:46):
comes to what he's doing. And this is the first
time since two thousand that he has taken a year
off of football. So Ian mentioned this yesterday, and I
thought it was a really good observation. Where in between
his firing from the Patriots after going eight to eight
and then going to USC that was his year off
and he reinvented himself. And I didn't think about it
(03:09):
in those terms, but Ian put it that way, and
I was like, man, that is one hundred percent right,
And for twenty four years he was exactly that he was.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
Peter.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
I guess it's twenty three years because he took twenty
twenty four off. He was the new hymn that he invented.
And I'm wondering during this year if he reinvented himself again,
if he just continues to metamorphize into more and more
of a butterfly or mathra you know, whatever you wanted
to be. But it sounded yesterday like he was coming
(03:40):
to instill a culture and changed the direction of the Raiders,
which is exactly what he did after the Jim Mora.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
I can't call it an era. It was one and done.
Speaker 1 (03:49):
But after Jim Mora and the Seahawks parted ways back
in two thousand and nine, what do you think about it?
Speaker 2 (03:56):
I mean, you heard him and we'll hear a little bit.
Speaker 4 (03:59):
Yeah. At home, I was just thinking, man, he's back
everything that he talked about, from competing to his love
and admiration for Tom Brady and how they're going to
use him a lot in the search for filling the
pieces on this roster, including a quarterback. It was just
cool seeing Pete doing it because you guys, remember his
last comments to the Seahawks media was I'm not done.
Speaker 3 (04:21):
I'm not this.
Speaker 4 (04:22):
You know, we'll figure it out, but I still want
to coach, like I love this game, I'm having fun.
Speaker 3 (04:27):
I'm not tired. Y'all are not making me tired.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
So, yeah, he really didn't like that seventy three on
his back.
Speaker 4 (04:32):
Oh yeah, you know that he doesn't wear that with
a big smile. But he was definitely joking in that department.
But the biggest thing is how amped up he is
for the opportunity. Yes, you know, a reporter asked him, Hey,
you know, you've done everything a coach could probably ever
want to do. And for Pete, it's not about that.
It's about the love of the game and he enjoys
it like it's nice to win. But the compete aspect
(04:56):
is where he's really trying to get back competing. And
something that was full circle was the fact of the
run game and how I listened to another part of
his interview where they talked about the run game.
Speaker 3 (05:07):
He was on their Raiders Nation radio network.
Speaker 4 (05:10):
I believe they talked about the run game and how
it's now don't look at that a team that runs
the ball and doesn't rely on the quarterback as much.
And you look at Jalen Hurts doesn't have to go
out there and throw for two hundred yards. He can
just handle the Saquon and that makes the job so
much easier. And that's what Pete was all about, even
when he established then that even with Russ and Russ
wonder Cook, he was like, Noah, bro, let's just make
(05:32):
it easy for you.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
How we win a Super Bowl.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
Yeah, the defense, running.
Speaker 4 (05:36):
The football, special teams. You just needed to manage the
football game. And that's all Pete wants to do. And
to see that for coming up in this Super Bowl,
for one team against another team where they can run
the football, but they can also if they need to
give it to Patrick Mahomes, he's going to make the
right read at the right time. So a collision of
two forces of one force of being able to run
(05:57):
in pass and then one team that's run dominant going
out and getting sa quon. You know, I'm sure Pete
was like, you know, that's just how the game goes, right.
But because the biggest concern in Seattle was all we're
trying to run the ball too much and we have
a great quarterback who can throw these moon balls and
we just need to use him more often. Like the
run game's great, but let's throw it. And now you
(06:18):
can see that the Eagles have done what Pete wants
to do and it's not over. It's not a passing
league pass heavy this year. It shows that if you
have a valuable running back and you have a good
old line and you still have weapons outside, Oh my goodness,
how far can you go? And look at the Eagles
as an example of a team that ran the football.
I mean, Sekuon could have ran for three hundred yards
(06:39):
if they kept them in the game.
Speaker 2 (06:40):
I know you talk about reinventing ones yea.
Speaker 4 (06:43):
So that was really cool and I'm sure Pete's excited
to see that. I know that's what he wants to
do with the Raiders. Does he need the top five
quarterback in the league. No, But if he can get
a guy that can manage the football, not turn it over,
and have a good defense, have a good running game,
special teams a solid I think he'll have a really
successful season. But good luck funding those pieces because the
quarterback room that's gonna be a tough challenge. And then obviously,
(07:07):
there's probably a few running backs in the free agent
market that'll be available, but they got a lot of
tough decisions to make. But I know him and Spy Tech,
as he kept saying, me and John are going to be,
you know, doing this together.
Speaker 1 (07:16):
Isn't that a little awkward because I kept feeling like
he was referring to John.
Speaker 4 (07:19):
Stick I knew he was talking about It was kind
of funny though, that they're both John when he's Spy Tech,
and one is you know, obviously Schneider. So that's just
the universe working in hilarious ways. I guess, you know
he worked.
Speaker 2 (07:33):
John's a pretty common name.
Speaker 4 (07:34):
I guess, right in the NFL and a president, Yeah him,
That's that's kind of like, huh, how that all work out?
But every time he talked about him and John, I
thought I did chuckle a little bit, as I'm sure
you did as well.
Speaker 3 (07:47):
So I'm excited to see the Raiders.
Speaker 4 (07:49):
I know a lot of Seahawk fans might be checking
out the Raiders more often this season, just because I
don't know. Former head coach who everyone loves and wish
the best, now has another opportunity to coach. And I'm
I think the Seahawks m d up playing them either
next season. I think it's the season, yes, yeah, the
next one. So I'm sure that'd be a fun one
seeing Pete back in Seattle or if the Seahawks go
(08:11):
to Las Vegas.
Speaker 3 (08:12):
Either way should be a blast.
Speaker 1 (08:13):
And you know, it's going to be all love. It's
going to be absolutely all love. And we we do
have at ten forty five, we got some sound for
you that you have to hear, which is pure love
between Pete and one of.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
His former players.
Speaker 5 (08:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (08:25):
I also think that when you were talking about the
pieces that Pete needs to find when it comes to quarterback,
running back, offensive, not offensive line so much, but skilled
position players, he also is going to have to find
someone who fits into his philosophy and culture, especially in
a leadership position. And he, you know, he still has
a staff to assemble as well, so he's.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
Gonna need to be on the same page.
Speaker 1 (08:48):
And you know, I really hope he does stick to
because they're in a very tricky no quarterback situation.
Speaker 2 (08:55):
Yeah, and so they.
Speaker 3 (08:56):
Love Gardner, but he's not the No, you're not gonna
put the friend. You're not that guy. You're not that guy.
Speaker 1 (09:02):
Yeah, and I don't think he fancies himself that one. Anyway,
He's a guy who is ready at the drop of
a hat. But anyway, when I'm talking about the culture,
if you could pull up that Pete audio clip talking
about instilling his culture, how does he do it here?
Speaker 6 (09:17):
The culture is the players and you'll see that. But
we'll show them the way. And it all starts with competition.
I mean, you either compete or you're not. And I'm
going to make sure that that's really clear to these
guys from the moment they get here. You know, we're
going to go out and draft a class and there
will be a few free agents maybe we'll be able
to attract and we'll need to see those guys and
(09:37):
we'll need to see what they're all about. But the
competition part of it is theirs to command. If there's
one thing that I want them to understand, and you know,
start the message right now. If you want to be
on a great team, you need to be a great teammate.
And so teaching what that's all about and instilling that
in the makeup of our program is going to be crucial.
(10:00):
And the susceptial theme in the program is always going
to be competition, and that's what starts.
Speaker 5 (10:05):
Now.
Speaker 2 (10:05):
I hear that.
Speaker 1 (10:06):
It's the first thing that he said. The culture is
the players, and one hundred percent is under Pete's regime.
Speaker 2 (10:13):
So that's why I meant that it's not.
Speaker 1 (10:15):
Just going to be talent that he's looking for as
the next head coach of the Raiders. He wants to
see talent and someone who's going to buy in, and
it will not just be with him though. It's going
to be John Spytech and it's going to be Tom Brady.
And it sounded like Tom Brady is going to have
a very very healthy of dose healthy dose.
Speaker 4 (10:35):
If tom Brady says, you know what, Pete, I'd love
to play for you, let me suit up.
Speaker 1 (10:40):
I'm nothing surprises me with that man anymore. But you know,
one of the things that was also brought up is
it's tom Brady's chance to put a stamp on a franchise.
And we saw John Lynch do it at a later time.
He didn't exactly have the back and forth that tom
Brady did at the end of his career, but we
saw a four former players step into a front office
(11:03):
and be extremely successful, very fast. I thought that was
going to crash and burn, to be honest, and I
did not think it was going to be as successful
as it has been. And I thought it would take
him longer to instill a period of success for the
forty nine ers.
Speaker 2 (11:19):
And I was dead wrong. I was absolutely wrong.
Speaker 1 (11:22):
And I think we're going to see more of it
in the future with guys like that being involved in franchises.
Speaker 3 (11:28):
I agree. I don't know. I'm trying to think. Did
I think it would crash and burn? I probably did too,
just because.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
I just saw a form almost like what does he
know about running a team? You know, you got the name,
You have the eye for talent, for sure.
Speaker 4 (11:41):
I think that's the key though, having the eye for talent.
If you can get that right, you just need a
coach to put the piece together make your product work well.
Speaker 3 (11:47):
And he's done that. Unfortunately.
Speaker 4 (11:49):
Injuries are yeah, that team is just I mean, they're
not worst injury luck, not.
Speaker 2 (11:54):
Unfortunately for us. I don't wish injury on anybody, but yes.
Speaker 3 (11:57):
You're a Seahawk fans, You're like, so, what are you
kidding me, Chris?
Speaker 1 (12:01):
I mean, if it's going to happen, we wouldn't. We
don't want it happening here. We just want it happening elsewhere. Okay,
Uh what happened to Russ?
Speaker 4 (12:11):
Oh yeah, and that wasn't even on that Thank god
that man retired and Aaron Donald because he ruined a
lot of careers.
Speaker 2 (12:18):
Yeah, that was what I mean? What that was the
first time that Russell missed like ever?
Speaker 3 (12:22):
He missed what was it eight weeks? Such a long time.
Speaker 2 (12:25):
He had, well, he missed, he had the thumb the.
Speaker 3 (12:28):
But I do know, I do know he came back
too early because he's Russell Wilson.
Speaker 1 (12:32):
Yes, of course, of course. Yeah, no time to sleep.
Everyone's begging him to get some sleep please.
Speaker 4 (12:38):
Yeah. That that guy is a competitor as well, which
is why maybe uh I might find himself.
Speaker 1 (12:44):
Jerry Evstein of Yahoo Sports is joining us at eleven
a m. And I definitely want to dig into the
possibilities of current quarterbacks in the NFL and Pete Carroll,
so we'll get to that you can help that team.
Speaker 2 (12:57):
Two of six says he looks younger somehow. Kind of agree.
Speaker 1 (13:00):
I don't think Pete has aged at all. Did he
send a time capsule for that year off?
Speaker 4 (13:05):
He just drinks water and throws footballs around. That's the
that's the recipe. Ladies and gentlemen. If you want to
look like Pete, drink water and throw the football around,
or throw the frisbee around, go hiking. Just stay active.
Speaker 2 (13:16):
Oh, he keeps that jawline through the gum.
Speaker 4 (13:18):
I think all the chewing, so constant chewing. Get a
little athletic leisure time going on. Whatever that might be, hiking,
throwing the football around. Soccer probably offended a couple of
people with that freight with that soccer comment. I know
a lot of listeners be killing Anderson and Jackson for
talking soccer, but hey, you know, it's all welcome here
(13:38):
on sports radio.
Speaker 1 (13:39):
There.
Speaker 2 (13:40):
It is a sport and it is talked about.
Speaker 4 (13:42):
It all going to be seventy plus and look like Pete,
get off your buns and get outside.
Speaker 1 (13:48):
All right, Well, let's get to one more cut from him,
because we talked about his year off earlier.
Speaker 2 (13:52):
What did he learn from that time? I'm curious.
Speaker 6 (13:56):
Hey, I would be competing if I wasn't learning. You know,
that's the whole point. You got to keep on, stay
curious and make sure that you're always on the next
opportunity to be a little bit better. I had an
incredible year. I got to watch JV football in high school,
my grandson playing quarterback. Then he played on the varsity
team as well. I watched all those games. My son
was coaching at the U UP in Seattle, he's often
(14:18):
sive coordinator there. Got to watch all of their games,
watched everything I could watch in the league, watch my
other son and all of my guys coaching, Danny Quinn
and David Canalis and guys around the league that have
been with me. It's been a year full of just
input and so as the last time I had a
year that I stepped away from it and it was
extraordinarily life changing for me. This year, I feel, has
(14:41):
been the same. The extraordinary opportunity to see things uniquely.
When you're not coaching ball, you don't get that observation opportunity.
You just can't because you're so immersed in what you're doing.
It was extremely valuable. So I can't wait for all
of the things that I see that I want to
do differently than what done in the past, and I
think their improvements. I wouldn't be thinking that, And it's
(15:05):
it's been an amazing journey to get to this moment
right here, and so I'm really fired up about taking
advantage of that year.
Speaker 1 (15:14):
And he hasn't done it in over two decades, taking
that time off. And I think, you know, it's interesting
because you know, I played college sports. I grew up
playing sports and everything, and when I got to college, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (15:27):
I know, i'mplexing. Can't you tell that I played college sports? Anyway?
Speaker 1 (15:31):
A girl who you know who played on my team.
She was a year younger than me. She was an
outside hitter, fantastic athlete. She tour Aco in practice one time.
She had to sit out a year. When she came back,
and I know this is different than coaching, but kind
of on the same scale. She came back and she
was lights out because she sat and watched and learned
(15:51):
the entire year that she had to sit out.
Speaker 2 (15:54):
And I see that with athletes too, because.
Speaker 1 (15:56):
You're so in it, you're so you know, you almost
get a ton of vision because especially at the professional level,
when it comes to coaching and playing, you are focused
on the next day, the next thing. You can't take
a step back and take a thirty thousand foot view.
Speaker 2 (16:11):
And that's what Pete got to do.
Speaker 1 (16:12):
We saw his success afterwards after he came back to
USC and then went straight to the Seahawks insane success,
and he instilled the same exact culture. I expect nothing
but greatness for the Raiders for the next three years,
and I wonder how long Pete's going to stay there
and depending.
Speaker 2 (16:29):
On his success? Why would they stop him from being
there because old see, you can't that's agism. I mean,
if he can physically do it, you cannot do that.
Speaker 3 (16:40):
That is wrong.
Speaker 2 (16:42):
We don't have an HR department here.
Speaker 4 (16:44):
I would guess if things just don't work the way
I know, he wants to get this done quickly. I
don't know what that looks like for the playoffs, or
how many wins or what the end goal is like.
No reporter asked, hey, what's a succesxful season to you?
Speaker 3 (16:57):
Pete?
Speaker 4 (16:58):
Is it? Is it six wins? But I do know
he wants to get the ball rolling. He wants to
reset and get going now. He wants to I would
imagine in three years they're doing something special. I don't
know what that looks like, but that would be my guess,
just because knowing Pete, he wants to get in and
get rolling like he has he wants to compete. He
(17:19):
wants to see the Chiefs. I don't know when, how
soon he wants to play those guys. He's excited.
Speaker 2 (17:24):
He does. What a legendary AFC West coaching staff.
Speaker 4 (17:28):
By the way, man down the board, where do you
want to start? Sean Payton just transformed Bo Nicks into
I don't know. He looks really good. The only thing
I thought he could do is throw bubble screens. And
then you get to the playoff game, they score a
test on You're thinking, wow, this might be a good game.
And then the Buffalo Bills do what they do. You
got Andy Reid, the whisperer of everything. My guy just
(17:50):
knows ball, Pete Carroll doing his thing. It's just unbelievable.
With that AFC West, and then you got Harball.
Speaker 3 (17:57):
With the Chargers.
Speaker 2 (17:58):
That's my favorite one.
Speaker 3 (17:59):
Those guys have had battles for years in this long deal.
Speaker 2 (18:03):
I can't wait. I can't wait.
Speaker 3 (18:04):
Playing those playing each other twice a year. Now, Wow,
what a division.
Speaker 2 (18:08):
I can't wait.
Speaker 1 (18:08):
I mean, it's like those two were destined to be
nemesis because we had Stanford USSE, then we had Niners Seahawks,
and now with.
Speaker 3 (18:17):
The khaki pants. I love it.
Speaker 2 (18:19):
Oh my goodness, I can't wait.
Speaker 1 (18:20):
All right, Well, we have a lot more coming up.
I think we set the table pretty well. We got
to figure out what happened with the crack in last night.
If you were watching the game, it was pretty evident.
I was happy to see them start fast, like we
wanted them to end the first period with a two
to one lead. But Edmonton is leading the Pacific, so
(18:40):
it wasn't surprising that they lost. But what do they
need to do to keep hope alive? We'll ask my
bet next Jessamin McIntyre alongside Chris Kid.
Speaker 2 (18:49):
We are on ninety three point three KJRFM.
Speaker 7 (18:52):
Now back to Greg Bell and Christopher Kidd on your
home for the NFL Playoffs and Super Bowl fifty nine
Sports Radio ninety three point three KJRFL touch Down.
Speaker 2 (19:07):
Welcome back in. This is ninety three point three KJRFM.
Speaker 1 (19:10):
Greg is taking a well deserved vacation day after working
all those long hours this season, and.
Speaker 2 (19:17):
It is a cracking ticket Tuesday. Do not forget.
Speaker 1 (19:20):
I believe we have given one pair of tickets away
so far, and yeah we got another pair. Remember this
game is for the Thursday, February sixth game against the
Toronto Maple Leafs.
Speaker 2 (19:33):
That's a seven o'clock game.
Speaker 1 (19:36):
Six point thirty three game with a man we're about
to talk to and remember. Our weekly visit with the
Kraken Studio host Mike ben is brought to you by
Muckleshoe Bingo. NonStop fun is waiting for you right now
at Muckleshoe Bingo. Over five hundred machine slot players love
and Muckleshoot Bingo in Auburn is your home for machine
(20:00):
Mike Benton is joining us right now. Benen, how are
you today?
Speaker 8 (20:05):
Hey, I'm good.
Speaker 5 (20:06):
You sold that ticket Tuesday. Well, but I'm gonna add
to this. It's not often that you'd get cracking Leaf
tickets original six in the building. Austin Matthews. There's gonna
be energy that night. That's gonna be a fun one.
Speaker 2 (20:18):
So can we.
Speaker 1 (20:20):
Are people gonna travel to this game? I mean, Toronto's
across the country, it's like Canada's or.
Speaker 5 (20:26):
Well, I mean there there are Leafs fans and pockets everywhere.
Speaker 8 (20:30):
Jets.
Speaker 5 (20:30):
It's almost like Blue Jays fans who come down from
Maritors games and they'll they'll come across the border. They'll
they'll they'll flow the ballpark to some Mariners fans, you know,
a little bit too much in numbers, But we always
look at our friends are of course from the north,
but they're they're up there with you know, you get
Edmonton fans who packed this building here at Climate Pledgerina
(20:51):
in droves.
Speaker 8 (20:52):
I would say Pittsburgh's up there.
Speaker 5 (20:53):
As far as turnout Canucks fans for obvious reasons.
Speaker 8 (20:57):
Uh so. I mean I've seen throughout.
Speaker 5 (20:59):
The years with Leafs games when they're on the road,
they bring them out pretty well and they pack them
in with the big numbers.
Speaker 1 (21:06):
Yeah again, Mike Benton joining us here, Chris Kid, Jasamin McIntyre,
Greg Bell is off today and thank you for him
giving us the airwaves today.
Speaker 2 (21:16):
Now, Benton, let's go back to last night.
Speaker 1 (21:18):
We saw the crack and get off to a fast start,
which everybody wants to see more of. So plus one
in the wing column, but four to two the final score.
Speaker 2 (21:26):
What was your assessment overall of the loss?
Speaker 5 (21:30):
I love that first period and I wish they had
more of it. But this is why they say the cliche,
and it can be cliche. Sometimes you've got to play
a full sixty minutes. And I can't help but think
if they were able to tuck one on the power
play when they had a two main advantage for over
a minute, caring from period one into period two. I mean, yes,
(21:52):
Edmonton has the ability and they have the Skilless what
the sweatshot? I mean, it's almost nightmares, it's almost freakish.
But you put that team down three one after one
period and they just get caught her McDavid back.
Speaker 8 (22:05):
In the lineup.
Speaker 5 (22:06):
You know, you you've got a psychological edge that you've
you've gained and hex that you put on them as
they go to their own dressing room, and the Craken
just squandered it. And to no one's surprised about literally
a couple of minutes later, once Edmonton killed off the
succession of penalties, here comes dry Settle, here to McDavid,
(22:26):
boom two nothing, and you just felt the energy pick
right back up in that building. And then the Kraken
got into a massive scoring chance tradeoff game and that's
that right into Edmonton's hands, and lo and behold they
find Corey Perry. It was just like Russell Wilson to
Tyler Lockett back in the day, right behind the pag boom,
(22:49):
see you later, good night, three to two game and
that was that. So, you know, I think they're they're, they're, they're,
they're going to get a win against Edmonton one of
these days.
Speaker 8 (22:57):
Here. It's a tough matchup for them.
Speaker 5 (22:58):
It always has been got to wait until March now,
but we've learned that.
Speaker 8 (23:03):
Again.
Speaker 5 (23:03):
I mentioned this with al Kiniski before the game last night.
You'll get your chances. Edmonton's so good at cashing it
on there as you've got to execute and then you
don't want to get into trading rush chances with the Oilers.
They love the track meet game and it's been riding
into their game plan last night.
Speaker 4 (23:21):
Mike, what was your takeaway regarding the goaltending decision? Would
you have maybe preferred to see the core rested Monday.
Speaker 8 (23:31):
That's a great crush a question, Chris.
Speaker 5 (23:34):
We were talking about this a lot during the road trip,
on and off the ear as well. It's tough because,
I mean, on one hand, you played the court against Edmonton.
He's your guy, he's got the hot hand, and you know,
for for good reason last night, he kept the cracking
in this game.
Speaker 8 (23:49):
They had a great.
Speaker 5 (23:50):
Chance to tie this thing. Up and you know, you
never know your some position to steal in an extra
point in overtime. And then you know you face an
Anaheim team. You know that's a bit weirder. You know
they've had a tough season, they're still growing with their
young core. Philip Greenbauer, he's had great numbers against him,
but his game's taking a few steps back again in
(24:10):
the recent weeks here. But then do you play Greenbauer
last night and see if you can gut one out
with him and then go with the guy who has
been hotter against a lesser team, if you will, in
Anaheim compared to Edmonton.
Speaker 8 (24:27):
I mean that was tough. So I mean I look
at it this way.
Speaker 5 (24:31):
You put Joey to cord In last night to give
yourself the best chance to win. And I think here
from this point, Philip Greenbauer hasn't seen anything ever since
the Detroit game where that one was just ending disaster
in the first period, three goals in the first four shots,
and the Red Wittens just sped away after that. But
you got to get Grubauer in here sometime. If you
(24:53):
ride to court all the way, even from back to back,
you're risking and just burning him out, So you know,
I get understand the decision.
Speaker 8 (25:00):
I would say fifty to fifty.
Speaker 5 (25:02):
You can't go wrong based on how unique this setup
business week, and I think we're going to see you know,
Grew Bauer here this evening, but last night Lo and
Behold joined the cord a chance to win. Ultimately, he's
going to be your guy. I think is going to
be getting the bulk of these starts all the way
through for as long as A Crack again hanging around
with the playoff conversation.
Speaker 1 (25:21):
Mike Ben joining us here, Jessaman McIntyre in for Greg Bell.
I'm alongside Chris Kid and Ben. Let's look at tonight
back to back games. They were on the road, now
they're at home hosting Anaheim. How much of I don't
know a stress is that? Will there be fatigue? And
what are you expecting in tonight's game?
Speaker 5 (25:44):
Well, past history show has it's been a pretty big
stress test. Jess The Crack and I have played seven
games in the end of back to back and they
haven't won any of them, and a few of them
have been quite disastrous as far as their matters offensively.
So I mean the first period is going to be
very very important here to get off and running, so
to speak. Maybe if you get the first goal. I mean,
(26:06):
the crowd's going to be there, They're going to be packed.
There's going to be a ton of energy here. And
if you can put Anaheim back on their heels, who's
more rested here at this point, You're doing yourselves a
favor because the last thing that a team wants to
do when they're in the end of a back to
back started chasing games and chasing leads, especially early because
usually in that second game you could pass the halfway point,
(26:27):
you begin to see the legs really begin to give
and tire out here.
Speaker 8 (26:32):
So this is going to be a very important one.
Speaker 5 (26:34):
If the Kracking can put themselves in good position with
discipline I'm talking about, you know, their on ice puck management,
they're going to be in good shape. Anaheim has taken
the seven most minor penalties in this league this season.
The Krack and power play has gotten the workout last
several games. I want to say that they've averaged five
power plays a game over the last five games. Then
(26:56):
the numbers are in front of me right now here.
But they've had quite their share of chances here against Anaheim,
who has had attention to you know, find their way
into the sin bins. So I think the power play
could potentially be once again a big factory here for
this evening. And they're looking to a tone after last
night going zero for four and squandering that two man advantage.
(27:16):
So ultimately, I think again the first period going to
be very, very important. If Philip Grubauer is in, can
he look dialed in, can he make the basic saves?
And then can the Kraken play with discipline, play with pluck, management,
and play with energy getting into the Anaheim zone and
exploiting them defensively. If they can do that, they're going
to be in good shape here.
Speaker 1 (27:35):
There you go, Mike Benton, Keys of the game, take
advantage of the power play and hopefully got some good
rest last night on their way back to Seattle to
host Anaheim Ducks.
Speaker 2 (27:45):
Ben, thank you and have a great show tonight.
Speaker 8 (27:49):
Thank you.
Speaker 2 (27:49):
Good talking to you all right, Mike Benton.
Speaker 1 (27:51):
He is brought to you by muckle Shute Bingo again
NonStop fun waiting for you right now at Muckleshoote Bingo
over five hundred machines sloped muckleshoot being go in Auburn
your home for a machine go and you'll hear him
on the pre and postgame and intermission shows tonight. That's
Mike Benton and you heard him on the call last night,
(28:12):
always doing a fabulous job when he's called up for
play by play. Coming up next, we have a couple
soundbites that will show you why Pete Carroll is absolutely
the best culture changer for a team like Las Vegas
who desperately needs it. That's next, Chris Kid, Jessseman McIntyre
ninety three point three KJRFM.
Speaker 2 (28:41):
Welcome back to.
Speaker 1 (28:42):
Ninety three point three KJRFM. I'm Jessamin McIntire alongside Chris Kidd.
Speaker 2 (28:47):
Greg Bell has the day off.
Speaker 1 (28:48):
I hope he's out on the slopes once again, or
at least enjoying this beautiful sunny day of which we've
had many lately.
Speaker 2 (28:55):
Happy Tuesday, everyone.
Speaker 1 (28:57):
Remember it is a Kraken Ticket Tuesday and you will
have one more chance to win a pair of tickets
to the Maple Leafs cracking game on February sixth.
Speaker 2 (29:06):
That's seven pm.
Speaker 1 (29:07):
That is a Thursday night, so you can celebrate the
unofficial start to the weekend.
Speaker 2 (29:11):
As Ian would like to say.
Speaker 1 (29:13):
And yeah, we'll have that for you in the eleven
o'clock hour and all hours of programming throughout the rest
of this day on all shows.
Speaker 2 (29:20):
So welcome back in.
Speaker 1 (29:22):
We have been talking about Pete Carroll, and you know,
I thought that maybe this would be a little bit
played out by now twenty four hours after he had
his introductory press conference. But people seem to love it,
especially because one he's not in our division. Two he's
not even in our conference, and three there was not
a bad parting here in Seattle. Most people tend to
(29:44):
agree that it was time for him to go that
even though he had seen some pretty good success, it
wasn't heading towards the great success that we had seen
earlier in the you know, twenty twelve, thirteen fourteen, when
that there was clearly a trajection of success, and they're
(30:05):
happy for him. There was no bad terms, so there's nothing.
He didn't quit. The team decided to part way, as
Jody Allen and anyone else who was making that decision,
and he sat out for a year, so he didn't
just jump on. I think this is a perfect situation
for him. But what I had said before we went
to commercial is that. I think he is the absolute
perfect tone setter. The culture that he instills, we saw
(30:29):
it for decades once he reinvented himself. I'll give Ian
credit for having said that yesterday that you know, he
saw a decade of success at USC and then he
saw more than a decade of success here in Seattle
as a Seahawks head coach.
Speaker 2 (30:43):
But this stood out to.
Speaker 1 (30:45):
Me yesterday in the half hour so press conference that
he had maybe it was about forty minutes long, introducing
both Tam and John Spytech. We heard this in the
crowd when there was no camera on this person, and
we just heard this come from the back while Pete
was giving his opening statement here in Las Vegas.
Speaker 6 (31:04):
To do it in this setting right here where people
can't wait to come see us, they can't wait to
see what we're all about. Wherever our fans come from,
we do want to fill our stadium up with our guys.
I know that we have a good draw for people,
no matter of time. There you go, there you go.
That's what I'm talking about.
Speaker 2 (31:20):
Pete loves that good energy. Pete loves that good energy.
Speaker 1 (31:24):
And he jokingly said, all right, Mark, calm down, because
they couldn't see who was screaming, which I didn't know
at the time, but we all thought that was Mark
Davis because who knows what that guy's going to do.
He is cut from a different cloth. But anyway, afterwards,
the Raiders were walking down the hallway and it was
right after Pete exited the press conference and we saw.
Speaker 2 (31:43):
This, Pete, you got a surprise.
Speaker 8 (31:49):
You You ain't hear me?
Speaker 3 (31:52):
Youllingna? You know I didn't was that?
Speaker 1 (32:01):
Now, you guys all love and appreciate and recognize that voice.
That is the one and only Marshaw and Lynch, which
you know later it did get out on social media
that he was in attendance at that press conference, so
if you were watching the visuals, you did know it
was him.
Speaker 2 (32:16):
Us listening and not being able to see him.
Speaker 1 (32:18):
We had no idea because that was you know, anybody
could have been saying Raiders in that tone of voice,
but the Raiders were filming him coming up to surprise Pete.
And I love the fact that Pete didn't actually see
him and didn't know that he was there, and that
just makes it all the more special. And I don't
know if you guys remember this, but in the mid
(32:40):
twenty teens. There was a game against Missus mid twenty teens.
I'm not sure exactly what year, but it was when
the Seahawks were going on the road to play Minnesota
and it was during the winter school.
Speaker 2 (32:54):
I forget.
Speaker 1 (32:55):
I don't know, I get these all conflated because they
had a couple different meetings with them, but anyway, it
was the infamous Marshon doesn't show up to the bus.
He decides that nope, I'm not going uh And it
was reported by one photographer who was there, and it
was readily dismissed because everyone took off. Everyone got on
a plane and took off. And Pete could have been
(33:17):
extremely disappointed. I mean, I'm sure he was disappointed. He
could have taken extreme measures as a coach when it
comes to disciplinary action of Marsian just deciding that he's
not going to play in that game of which he
was a critical piece, and obviously there.
Speaker 2 (33:32):
Was a whole not talking to the media thing.
Speaker 1 (33:34):
Pete treated him extremely well when it came to that,
and I don't know behind the scenes what their communication
was like, but Pete, Carroll and Marsian is just an example.
And then Marchon comes to surprise him at his introductory
press conference, no bells and whistles, just sitting in the back.
Pete goes, oh wait, that was you. Their interaction just
(33:56):
made me realize that this guy is a microcosm of
what he can do for a culture.
Speaker 4 (34:00):
One thousand percent. That was really cool moment. And excuse me,
I just enjoyed that. Pete's always been the cool guy, right,
He's always been just a coach that loves up on you.
He might might be tough love, but at the end
of the day, it's all love. And you saw that,
you know, despite maybe Marshall having comments about him and
(34:21):
that one specific play, didn't.
Speaker 8 (34:23):
He and not?
Speaker 4 (34:23):
I like Pete what you're doing, man, But it's all
love at the end of the day.
Speaker 3 (34:27):
And that's an example of it.
Speaker 4 (34:28):
Because you all know Marshawn live out there in Vegas,
or at least has a home out there, so spends
a lot of his time in Las Vegas. And now
one of his one of the cool coaches, is back
in town coaching the Raiders organization. So I know Marshawn's
fired about it. Don't be surprised if Marshrown just has
a role. Don't know, what it would be.
Speaker 2 (34:46):
Marsha give him a golf cart, just let him go.
Speaker 4 (34:49):
Yeah, Marshall, Marshawn Lynch a part of the team. Don't
give him a title. He's just there. I'm sure players
will soak in the knowledge he gives and just all
around fun he is. So I'm looking forward to seeing
if that actually happens.
Speaker 2 (35:02):
Yeah, I do too.
Speaker 1 (35:03):
And then there's other guys like Michael Bennett was caught
in a meeting reading a book and not paying attention
to what Pete Carroll was saying.
Speaker 2 (35:11):
Richard Sherman had said.
Speaker 1 (35:12):
And this is you know, way back during their playing days,
for Pete had said that, you know, this Kumbayas stuff
doesn't really work anymore. There were guys that were rubbed
the wrong way by Pete's approach, and they were vocal
about it.
Speaker 2 (35:24):
So it's not as though everyone was always bought in
all the time.
Speaker 1 (35:29):
And you listen to those players today and they are
just a few among many, and they have nothing but
love and respect for Pete Carroll. That's a culture change
because he's so consistent with his message, and he's so
consistent with the way that he portrays it and the
way that he instills it, so you know you're never
getting I think a lot of people when he came
(35:49):
out of USC because of the allegations of what we're
going on with the program there. He comes to Seattle
and after all one and done, there were questions about
whether Jim Mora.
Speaker 2 (35:59):
Even knew about his firing.
Speaker 1 (36:01):
I do think that was proper firing, by the way,
but there were questions about the timing of it, whether
Pete was already hired or not. Jim Mora has said
as much, but he can be a little bit uh
off the handle at times. So whatever, take it for
what it's worth, take it with a grain of salts.
And so people had this impression of Pete Carroll that
(36:22):
he might be a little bit of a snakel a salesman,
and that's just it. You can't be that fake that
consistently for that long. I think that we all had
to take some time to warm up to who Pete
really was.
Speaker 2 (36:35):
And I think everything that we're seeing is completely genuine.
Speaker 3 (36:38):
One, but something that wasn't so genuine.
Speaker 4 (36:43):
Anyone knows who Liam Cohen is, right the new head
coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars, and we do now if
you don't. I just want to play a little snippet
of him saying Duval because I thought this was hilarious
due ball and the mannerism you've seen in the video
make it even more hilarious because he just looks so
uncomfortable saying it.
Speaker 1 (37:02):
He looks confused as to whether or not he should
be saying it like that.
Speaker 2 (37:07):
I mean, I'm sorry. I grew up in New York
and I was a fan of Live.
Speaker 1 (37:14):
I was a fan of you know, the AFC East,
you know the Jets.
Speaker 2 (37:19):
That's where I grew up.
Speaker 1 (37:20):
I know Duval, Okay, I I knew that. You know
if I know that, and I'm pretty far separated. Florida's
pretty far away from New York. If I grew up
knowing that, come on, man, just google it a few times.
That is the opposite way of ingratiating yourself to a
fan base. I did read a few headlines that he
(37:40):
got rid for that, but hopefully he's rolling with the punches, because.
Speaker 2 (37:48):
That's an evil cackle. That is an e O.
Speaker 1 (37:54):
Seriously, all right, Well, we got to get to a
break because coming up next, we're gonna get a national
perspective on not just peak but the championship games that
were and ahead to the super Bowl, which is in
about a week and a half from now, we will
be carrying that and we can we can say the
Super Bowl because we will have the Westwood On broadcast
on Sunday, February ninth. Coming up next though, Jory Epstein,
(38:16):
she'll get into all of those things from a national perspective,
thirty thousand foot view. That's next, Chris Kid, Jessamin McIntyre
right here in ninety three point three e kJ RFM
