you believe it's going to not happen, you text fiction

at the end of December, late December, right before Christmas time,
so that's how that works, and it works for us
every day at eleven thirty five eleven thirty we will

line four nine four five one A chance to be
part of the show as we do every day. Ian
Fornasseill joined me right here at Seahawks headquarters at eleven
(01:05):
forty five, leading in his show that he's going to
broadcast from this same room next to the Seahawks team
meeting room starting from twelve and the lasting till three
till Dave Softy Maher and Dick Faane take over from
three until seven, as they do every day. Headlines brought
to you by Frost Brewed Corlai Cho's chill. I just
told you one of them. The Seahawks have made a
trade to fortify their defense in the area and it
(01:26):
needs it most. Linebacker and run defense. They have traded
Jerome Baker, often injured, hasn't been on the field a
ton because of a hamstring issue, and when he has
been on the field, he's gotten blocked and out of
position on run plays. Jerome Baker, whom they signed on
just a one year contract from Miami, and the offseason
goes to Tennessee plus a fourth round pick of Seattle's
(01:46):
to get Ernest Jones. He was a third round pick
from the Los Angeles by the Los Angeles Rams a
few years ago. He'd spent three seasons as a middle
linebacker for the Rams. He was there Bobby Wagner until
Bobby Wagner came and played for them, and he shared
that role for one season a couple of years ago.
But Ernest Jones, by trade in the NFL has been
a middle linebacker as in stop the run, and now
(02:08):
they have two of them next to Tyrell Dotson. And
when we've talked to Hugh Millen at our eleven o'clock shots,
he has told us time and again that his concern
on the defense is the linebackers, the inside run stoppers,
and how Dotson and Baker were not filling that role
strongly enough. Well, that's what this trade is about, and
Ernest Jones will get here and do that. Tennessee's in
fire sale mode. They also traded DeAndre Hopkins, the former
(02:32):
three time All Pro wide receiver, to the Chiefs. They'd
say fifth round pick and exchange for fifth round pick
that could be a conditional fourth if Hopkins goes crazy
and gets toward his all pro selfish with Patrick Holster
on the ball, maybe he will. But the other thing
about intending about the Titans and how this trade came
down for the Seahawks, Mike McDonald has a good relationship
(02:53):
with the Titans staff, especially on defense. The Titans defensive
coordinator was on the Raven staff working for Don Wilson,
was working for Mike McDonald last year on the Baltimore staff.
It was a position coach when McDonald was the defensive coordinator. Now,
Tennessee's defensive coordinator knows Ernest Jones better than anybody than
an NFL short of Sean mcvay's staff in the Rams
(03:14):
right now, and so basically seven games into his Tennessee career,
the Seahawks are getting the Rams run stopper for the
last three seasons in this trade and costing him a
fourth round pick plus Jerome Baker, who had fallen out
of favor because of his lack of run defense. Here
in Seattle, Chris, there's a constant theme here on defense
at the second level. If you can't stop the run
(03:37):
as a linebacker, you don't play. For Mike McDonald, they
traded their Hedge Rusher to the Chicago Bears in the offseason.
Daryl Taylor, thank you. Before it even the season even began,
he was gone. And now they're trading Jerome Baker just
seven games into his one year free agent contract. You
don't stop the run on defense, you don't play. And
(03:58):
that's why Ernest Jones is in the trade from Tennessee. Okay,
the Metcalf injury situation sprain media cloud ligament is need.
It's a grade one string, McDonald said on Monday, I
told you the Cleveland clinic says a grade one strains
of recovery time typically one to three weeks. McDonald said,
Metcalf's going to quote do everything humanly possible to play
(04:18):
Sunday against their Bills today. I bet he won't practice tomorrow.
I bet he won't practice. In fact, he could probably
not practice all week and still have a possibility of playing.
Probably going to be questionable or doubtful on the injury
report that comes out on Friday, but there's a possibility
he doesn't play. Riek Walling, it sounds better back from
(04:39):
his sprained ankle that caused him the mystic went in
Atlanta last weekend. McDonald said that Woolen will practice in
quote some capacity today, at least he said that on Monday,
and that would pretend him starting to trend toward playing
against the Bills on Sunday. They need him because if
they have Nea, Niah Pritchett and Josh Job again as
they started at the outside corners with the spoon inside
(05:00):
against the Falcons, Josh Allen will tear that apart. So
Woolan coming back as a plus. Trey Brown also had
a Spraynkele missed the Atlanta game. He sounds like he's
behind Woolven on his recovery. May not play this week.
We mentioned yesterday the athletic report out of Los Angeles
that the Rams are calling teams about possibly trading former
(05:22):
Super Bowl MVP Cooper Cup and Yakamumbeta, of course, played
at Eastern Washington. Still keeping an eye on that. A
lot of rumors out of Pittsburgh that the Steelers are
going to make a bid for Cup to give Russell
Wilson another weapon now that Wilson's the starting quarterback. And
by the way, Mike Tomlin is giving indications this week
in Pittsburgh, Yes, it's start Russell Wilson's starting job, and
why not after the Steelers screed thirty seven to beat
(05:43):
the Jets on Sunday night Crack and lost three to
two to Nathan McKinnon, Camacar and the Carlott Avalanche last
night Climate Pledger ram It's three one into the third
before late cracking goals, So Seattle's now four and three
on the young season, still the best start through seven
games they've had in their four years in the NHL.
For the five game Homestanders Tomorrow night against the six
and zero Winnipeg Jets, the league's only unbeaten untied team
(06:06):
so far, untied meaning not going to overtime and getting
overtime loss, seven pm, puck Drops six to thirty pre
game show with Mike Betton here on ninety three point
three KJFM. Tomorrow Kraken and Jets. Fernando Valenzuela died yesterday.
He was sixty three. Chris, you're probably too young to
know who. I've experienced phenanomania in nineteen eighty one. I
(06:26):
know you're too young because I was ten years old.
Fernando Valenzuela was I can't even describe as he was
a pretty much sho heeo Tani in nineteen eighty one
he came into the league. He had gone from Double
A in nineteen eighty to the last ten games or
tense appearances as a reliever for the Dodgers in nineteen
(06:48):
eighty and then straight into the Dodgers' rotation to begin
nineteen eighty one. Chris from Double A in nineteen eighty
the ten games he had the late in season for
the Dodgers as a reliever through the first eight start
he had for LA in nineteen eighty one eighty eight
and a span of eighty eight and two thirds innings.
Take a guess on how many earned runs he had
(07:08):
over that time earn runs allowed eighty eight and two.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
Thirds seven one. Oh. Okay, I was way off.
Speaker 1 (07:20):
And three different at Double A as a reliever for
the Dodgers in his first major league games of his
life and his first major league starts eighty eight and
two thirds innings won unearned run. He had this wild
motion where he stared up to the sky before he
threw the pitch, and an unnerved all the pictures of
all the hitters. This guy'sn't even looking at the plate.
(07:40):
He's gonna hit me take my head off. Left handed,
had a screwball that would just go right into the ground.
He was a phenomenon in southern California of Mexican descent.
With all the Latino Hispanic population in southern California just
went wild over him. I can still remember his ten
year old in Pittsburgh. I was in the dentist chair.
(08:02):
My uncle was a dentist in suburban pittsburgher Saint Clair.
And I'm sitting there in the dentist chair and I
hear on the radio advertisement that the Dodgers were playing
in Pittsburgh that night, and if Fernando Valenzuela was pitching.
This is June of nineteen eighty one. He's like eight
to oh with aze point five era at the time.
And I said to my parents, can we go? Can
we go? Go? We go see Fernando. The Pirates typically
(08:25):
back then, even two years we moved from winning the
World Series in nineteen eighty one, they draw like eight
or seven thousand people on a weeknight game. They had
fifty five thousand people in the park on a weeknight
in early June. School wasn't even out yet to watch
Fernando Valenzuela pitch in Pittsburgh. In Pittsburgh, that's how big
Fernando Valenzuela was. He passed away yesterday. The last time
(08:48):
the Dodgers in the Yankees played in the World Series,
Fernando Valenzuela was in the Dodgers' rotation nineteen eighty one.
And of course, the Dodgers and the Yankees begin this
year's World Series on Friday night, and you can bet
that the Dodgers are going to have a lot, a
lot of honoring of Fernando Allen's well he reigned around.
The team was on their Spanish broadcast at Icon passing
(09:08):
away at age sixty three yesterday. As I mentioned the
NBA season again, last night, Celtics hammered the Knicks with
all those three pointers Chris talked about in Boston to
defend their begin the defense of their title. And what'd
you think of Lebron James and his son BRONI last
night the Lakers beat Minnesota, Chris, that was good.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
It was cool, they got it out the way and
the best part about it they won the freaking game.
Speaker 2 (09:27):
It would have been really knowing if they lost.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
But Anthony Davis is he can show if he can
do this for seventy five games. The Lakers are going
to be in really good position because, as Kenny the
Jets Smith said at the end of the game, Lebron
is still a top five, top ten player.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
I agree, he's the top ten player in the league.
Speaker 3 (09:45):
And if ad is going to be a top ten
player in the league, they should be in really good
position to make the playoffs and make it out the
first round at minimum. So this team definitely has some
aspirations to reach towards. I think JJ Reddick had a
lot to do with it. I like just his presence,
how hard he's coaching these guys, and he wants him
to shoot more threes. And you saw that eighty took
(10:05):
more threes and I've ever seen him take. He was aggressive,
goodn't get into the basket. He played really good defense,
and then he threw a little shot at Rudy Gobert
at the end of the game. So I enjoyed the
first game and looking forward to seeing how the rest
of these teams, including the Lakers do for the remainder
of the season.
Speaker 1 (10:20):
That's a good win for the Lakers. We talked about Minnesota.
That's your pick to win the West and be in
the NBA Finals. Yep, that's a good win for them.
Speaker 3 (10:26):
It's a great win start, great start for the season,
but it's a long one eight one to go.
Speaker 1 (10:31):
Eighty one to go. The rest of the NBA, most
of the rest of the NBA season begins tonight. ESPN
has a doubleheader and I don't even remember who's playing
on ESPN. You know who's on National TV.
Speaker 3 (10:41):
Yes, it'll be the Memphis Grizzlies first. Actually, no, it'll
be Orlando and the Miami Heat first game. And then
the second game, I want to say it's Phoenix Suns
taking on I don't remember, but two back to back
games to your point.
Speaker 1 (10:57):
College football this weekend, Washington returns from its by going
to play at undefeated thirteenth ranked Indiana without its starting
quarterback who's injured. On Saturday, nine am kickoff here on
ninety three point three KJRFM with Tony caster Cone and
Cam Cleland, who was on the morning show with Chucking
Buck this morning. I assume a five am pregame show
again here with Dave Softy Maler. I don't know if
he's going to be in Bloomington or not. In the
(11:19):
Husky Hanks pregame show for the Huskies here on the
Home with Huskies ninety three point three KJRFM. The Dogs
are about a touchdown underdog to Indiana in Bloomington. On Saturday,
Washington State now six and one play at San Diego
State seven thirty pm on CBS Sports Network cable TV.
That looked at the beginning of season like one of
(11:40):
the tougher games for the Coops, and they're two touchdown
favorite on the road, starting to get some believers of
at least perception wise. I was surprised to see them.
Let me just say this more on that later well
played there Green Well, thinking about seventy five minutes. Did
you hear the controversy in Green Bay about Joe Mixon
jump into the stands?
Speaker 2 (12:01):
I did not give me some deeds.
Speaker 1 (12:03):
Joe Mixing of the Texans used to be of the
course of the Bengals jumps into the stands and try
to do a Lambeau leap after scored a touchdown Sunday.
The fan that he jumped into turned out he is
a former bodybuilder. He's this big former defensive tackle used
to play football, big strong guy wearing green and yellow
(12:23):
striped overalls. Pushed Joe Mixon in his face mask, but
pushed him by the face bass right back onto the field,
just ejected him from the first row. So, no, you're
not doing it here. My buddy Ryan would a Green
Bay that did his story about it, went to this
guy and talked to him. He told the whole story.
(12:44):
The security pointed him out from the field because you
couldn't miss him. He had these green and yellow overalls
are and like I said, he's a bodybuilder, former bodybuilder,
big big dude mixing was laughing over the whole thing,
by the way, But the security on the field points
him out to the Green Bay Police and cops, and
the cops come down and escort him out of the
(13:04):
place and detain him for a whole quarter. And the
guy's tick because he spent one thousand dollars for his
ticket on stub Hub or whatever, and he's got to
spend a quarter of the game talking to these cops
about the fact he was bodily harmed to it. That
was what they were trying to claim, he was bodily
harmed to a football player. He's like, dude's got pads
(13:25):
and a helmet on, a face mask. I got my hands.
What are you talking about? A bodily arm? He said
that they it was his first time he'd ever been
sitting in the end zone at Lambetfield. He'd driven all
this weight to the game. He spent one thousand dollars
for his ticket, and he said, I'll be damned if
my first Lambeau leap's going to be by an opponent.
That's not happening. So I'm pushing him out of there. Well, anyway,
(13:45):
the cops were threatening to eject him and find them
and arrest them and all this stuff. They claimed that
he'd jumped dump beer on him, but in fact there
was another fans from behind that were throwing beer on Mixing.
You do a Lambeau leap as a visiting player, you
get what you get, right, And on this stand.
Speaker 3 (14:03):
I don't know if imagine if he didn't land, and
he was like, shove mid air and don't.
Speaker 2 (14:09):
Jump in the stands.
Speaker 1 (14:10):
You can't fall if you don't jump, you stay on
the ground.
Speaker 2 (14:13):
Man, You're not allowed to shove someone.
Speaker 1 (14:15):
Are you?
Speaker 2 (14:16):
As a fan? That's like you go.
Speaker 1 (14:17):
Into the stands, Chris, You got anything and everything coming
to you. If you're a packer, you're gonna get love.
Speaker 3 (14:22):
Let's let's back up. He's not going in the stands
to fight. He's going in the stands to mimic what
the Packers do.
Speaker 1 (14:29):
Basically, ton you have a Packer fan, you're gonna talk
think take that as a ton right.
Speaker 2 (14:34):
And you could just be like, oh boo. I don't
think you could push them. I don't know.
Speaker 1 (14:36):
I'm sure you can't.
Speaker 2 (14:39):
Joe Mason wants to fight now because you pushed him
like that.
Speaker 1 (14:41):
That's Joe Mixon's fault.
Speaker 2 (14:43):
Feet and I stay on the ground.
Speaker 3 (14:45):
I think the NFL would take Joe Mixon's side, Which
is is that fair? Probably not, so, I don't think
that's what I don't say the hell the stands.
Speaker 1 (14:51):
If you don't want pushed on, if you're a Packer fan,
you're definitely gonna get hugging love. They know that.
Speaker 3 (14:56):
But yeah, I think that that's gonna make it's really
tough for a fan if they get pummel by a
player because they shove him, they're not winning that.
Speaker 2 (15:06):
I don't think they'd win that case.
Speaker 1 (15:08):
I say, good on that guy, Man, good on that guy.
You're a visiting player and you jump into I've been
to Lambeau Field many times, including cold cold playoff games.
Those fans are hearty, man. And if that dude spent
one thousand dollars and drove seven hours to his game,
damn right, he's not gonna let his first LAMB be
a visiting player.
Speaker 2 (15:25):
But I think Mixing handled it well, Like I'm not
staying I met.
Speaker 1 (15:28):
That's why I made the point at the beginning that
he left.
Speaker 3 (15:30):
Yeah, so if other players are like Mixing, I'm okay
with it for the most part.
Speaker 2 (15:34):
But I don't think everyone's like Mixing.
Speaker 3 (15:36):
There's a dude that's waiting for a fan to just
do something like that, and now there's a brawl in
the stands because oh he shoved me, but you did
the Lambeau leap. It's two longs don't make a right.
How about that.
Speaker 1 (15:47):
Four five one of the tunnel would do text line.
I brought it up to hear what you would think
if you were in the same situation as this bodybuilder
guy and overall striped.
Speaker 2 (15:55):
There's another thing.
Speaker 3 (15:56):
He ain't worried because he's a he's a bodybuilder, so
he has no fear. You put up a little twenty
one year old scrawny guy that's like.
Speaker 2 (16:02):
Oh yeah, he'd still do it.
Speaker 1 (16:04):
I would hope he would still do it, even a
twenty one year old scrawny guy. I hope you to
push him back nine the tell him we're new text line.
We'll be back. What you're thinking of the reaction to that,
and whether you would do the same thing if you
weren't bodybuilder former defensive tackle guy. Up next, I'm gonna
talk about the Seahawks defense now that they've made a
trade for Ernest Jones. I already mentioned what the reasoning
(16:25):
is and what this defense is up against Sunday is
what they haven't had faced yet. There's one player and
one reason why this is their toughest challenge yet for
Mike McDonald's defense. I'll talk about that next eleven thirty
five factor fixing your chance to win one thousand dollars
from the Ameron Queen Casino. Humellan will talk to us
at eleven o'clock, as he does every Wednesday here at
ninety three point three KJRFM. Lots more to come from
(16:46):
Seahawks headquarters in Rettin on ninety three point three KJRFM.
Speaker 4 (16:50):
Live from the R and R Foundation Specialist Broadcast Studio
Now back to the Great Bell Show with Christopher Kidd
on your Home for the Huskies and the Crack Sports
Radio ninety three point three kJ R FM.
Speaker 1 (17:10):
Welcome back to the Greg Melt Show with Christopher Kidd.
I am at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center, Seahawks Headkert.
Busy morning here in Seattle, Christmas, your kids. Back in
the studio at Elliot Bay in Seattle. We're here every
day ten am inter noon eleven am. Hugh Meln'll join
us as he does every Wednesday at eleven. It is Wednesday.
I think I said mistakenly Tuesday off the top of
(17:30):
the show, because I have too many six hour flights
and I just lose track. Eleven thirty five Factor fixtion
your chance to win one thousand dollars from the Emeral
Queen Casino, matching wits with our picks. I'm gonna stay
on college campuses today. Seahawks have been busy. As I
said this morning, they made a trade. They traded linebacker
Jerome Baker, who had been starting for them when he
(17:50):
wasn't injured, and a fourth round pick to the Tennessee Titans.
The Titans are in file fire sale mode. The Titans
give the Seahawks Ernest Jones, inside linebacker. Has been a
middle linebacker for the Rams for the first three years
of his career after they drafted him in the third
round a few years ago. This is absolutely a run
defense move by the Seahawks and Mike McDonald to make
(18:11):
their defense better than it certainly has been in the
bottom five of the league in rush defense again this
year after thirty first. Last year, Jerome Baker signed to
a one year free agent contract from Miami, came off
risk surgery that cost him most of the offseason, then
in the preseason he injured his hamspring he was limited
in August into September. Tyree's Knight had to play there,
(18:33):
the rookie fourth round pick from UTEP and now they've
got Ernest Jones to play next to Tyrell Dotson. Trading
Jerome Baker to Tennessee. And then also this morning, the
Seahawks have designated to return to practice from the injured
lists starting tackle Abe Lucas. We've been waiting for him
to get back on the field and today maybe the
first time he's practiced since January, and also designated to
(18:54):
return from injured reserve and to begin practicing. As George
Phamp Mike McDonald said on Monday, this might happen, and
he also said when Lucas does come back to practice,
it's going to be a while, he thinks, before Lucas
would be able to play, they're going to test that
knee and see how well it is suited to football
type activities in some ramp up limited practices to start.
(19:16):
I'm sure he has a twenty one day window Lucas
does from coming off the physically unable to perform with before,
at which time after twenty one days they have to
decide whether to either activate him to the fifty three
man and him start playing, or they don't think he's
ready and they put him on injured reserve for the
rest of the season twenty one days from today. We
mentioned this the other day. Chris is the Wednesday, the
(19:38):
first full practice day before the Seahawks play the San
Francisco forty nine ers. That's the game coming off there
by in mid November. So it's I guess you could
say likely, or at least let's just say Lucas is
on track for a season debut to come, most likely
at San Francisco. Coming out of Seattle's buys. The Seahawks
(20:00):
have the Bills at home, then the Rams at home
next week, and then they'reby and then at San Francisco,
and the Seahawks are likely targeting that San Francisco game
as the first game that Abe Lucas may be able
to play. Since January, Chris, we've talked about Abe Lucas,
former Washington State cougar from Archbason Murphy High School in
Mill Valley, Mill Creeks, I should say, and we've talked
(20:20):
about how important he could be to the offensive line
if he comes back huge.
Speaker 3 (20:24):
Oh my goodness, Gino is probably smiling, grinning ear to ear.
Christmas came early, getting that present underneath your tree. So
if he is able to play for that Niners game,
I think that'll be huge, especially for the Seahawks moving forward.
It allows allows some versatility in their offense, from the
run game all the way to pass protection because Abe
is really good in both so and you're missing that
(20:47):
right now, and hopefully by then maybe the right guard
situation is much better than it has been through seven weeks,
and also center, maybe that takes another step, and then
left guard I've kind of lost hope. But he just
have the You just got to play with what you got,
and yeah, there's nothing, there's nothing you can do. You're
just gonna ask and pray that he gets better and
better week in and week out. And then left tackle
(21:09):
Charles Crosses needs to be more consistent, and then you
should have a formidable offensive line that can do a
lot of the things that he'd want to do with
his offense with Ryan Grubb running things.
Speaker 1 (21:20):
So in the meantime until that San Francisco game, in
the next two games, it's gonna be either Mike Girell
or George Fant if Van Prou's ready from his knee injury.
He got that thirteen games into the season in the opener.
He started the opener and then lasted only thirteen plays,
and then Stone Forsyth had to come in. And stone
Forsyth had started the next five games, and Forsyth banged
his hand against San Francisco in the Thursday night game
(21:42):
week and a half two weeks ago, and that's why
he didn't play in Atlanta. Mike Girell, of course made
his season debut. We talked NFL debut, and we talked
at length about how great that was. How impressive he
was opening holes for Kenneth Walker and twenty yard touchdown
run and the pass protection he had. He did get
beat a couple of times, and Mike mc donald said
that there were some holes in his game. But as
(22:04):
Mike Girell from Division two Finley told me on Sunday
in Atlanta, I'll never be worse than I was today,
and he'll be better every practice in every game after
his debut. I would start him again even if fans
are ready to play. But Chris and I would have
gone back and forth on that this week, and we've
gotten on the text line in your opinion about that
as well. But diebe. Lucas situation definitely, for the first
(22:24):
time in ten months, has taken a turn for the
better in a positive way today with the move to
him coming back to practice. I'll be watching him this
afternoon and see how much he's participating. At the very start.
I'm sure he'll be a limited participant in practice here
probably for a couple of weeks. Anyway, Sunday, when the
Bills come in here five and two AFC East leading Buffalo,
(22:46):
the challenge is Josh Allen. Yeah, I know, Jared Goff
has been great, and the Lions are rolling. But this
offense and this quarterback is the best the Seahawks have
faced all year. Allen has ten touchdown passes and zero interceptions,
dropped back one hundred and ninety eight times and only
been sacked nine times. That's because he's so good at
eluding and getting away from pressure and running. He just
(23:09):
doesn't extend plays to throw. He takes off running. They
have design runs for him. His run game is as
good sometimes as his pass game, and that is something
Seattle hasn't had to deal with yet this year, and
that is a problem for their defense, for their contained,
they've had trouble with containing quarterbacks. I can remember Joe
Kobe Brissett running all over New England and that sunny
(23:30):
Sunday in Week two, extending plays and getting outside. Jared
GoF did the same thing when he won eighteen for
eighteen against this team. It's an issue, Chris, this ability
of Josh Allen to run the ball and not turn
the ball over. He does fumble something. He's got two
lost fumbles this season already. He's averaged four fumbles get
lost in a season that's the one that roughly won
(23:52):
every four games in his career, but some of that
is because he runs so much. This is a problem
for the pass rush, Chris. It's tough to pressure this
guy because he'll just take off running and get the game.
That's better than the pass it would have been.
Speaker 3 (24:05):
Yeah, it's all about staying in your lane when you
pass rush and not allowing him to get outside of
the edge. So Boy Mafey, Derek Hall, they're gonna be
tasked with staying sound and not getting happy feet and
trying to get inside or just do whatever because they're
not going up against Kirk Cousins. With Kirk Cousins, you
have a little more flexibility to freelance because he's a stone.
When the pocket collapses, he's not going to try and escape.
(24:26):
He's going to wave the white flag and take the sack,
whereas Josh Allen, he is going to try to create
and make problems for you the defensive line and the
secondary and if he gets outside the pocket, that is
just an issue that I don't know what the stocks
are ready for, and it's going to be imperative that
they all for d linemen or when they send pressure
or even if they blitz, that they're all on the
(24:47):
same page and trying to keep him locked inside the
pocket and make him be a pocket passer. And he
actually has now twelve touchdowns though interception. He threw two
last week against the Titans.
Speaker 2 (24:57):
So yeah, no, you're good.
Speaker 3 (24:58):
He's been phenomenalo this year and they are as you mentioned,
this is going to be the best quarterback they've faced
through eight weeks. But let's see how the defense responds
and can Devin with us won get a sack this
week against them because I know they're gonna send him
on a pressure.
Speaker 1 (25:12):
Yeah that's the thing. How much do you blitz? Because
if you blitz, you're giving up a course covering in
the back and Alan can beat you there too. And
now they've got a Mari Cooper whom they traded from
with Cleveland a couple of weeks last week, and that
they're restocked after losing Digs in the offseason to Houston.
This is going to be a massive challenge. This defense
(25:34):
has not been as Mike McDonald wants it to be
all year. Really, they've had spurts of it, but they
haven't competed exactly the way he wants to. So he
can do all of his raven schemes. We've talked about
how this is far from all of what Mike McDonald
wants his defense to be. They aren't doing as much
switching at this and disguising at the snap as he
wants them to do because he's worried about the fundamental
(25:56):
assignments that these guys don't always do. Sometimes they're in
the wrong yeah, Sometimes they are in the right run fits.
Sometimes there's not the right meshing in coveries versus pass
rush between the second and the first, second and third levels.
How much are they willing to blitz Witherspoon in the
middle of the d to leave the middle of the
field open, which has been a liability in past defense
for years for this team, including this year and this one.
(26:18):
It's yeah, it's a big monumental challenge. On Sunday coming
up at eleven o'clock, we're going talking to you Meling
about this challenge, what he likes as a quarterback, a
former NFL quarterback, Huskies quarterback about Josh Allen. It makes
him such a great quarterback. I think he's an MVP
candidate right now. I don't think there's much dispute about that.
At eleven thirty five, factor fixtion your chance to win
one thousand dollars from the Emerald Queen Casino, the betting
(26:39):
capital of the Northwest. Who you think the NFL MVP
is at the roughly quarter pole of the season seven
weeks in. I'm throwing my hat in the ring for
Josh Allen jored Goff probably gets some two. Who do
you like as your MVP of the early NFL season?
Put that down on the telemore due text line four
nine four or five one and we'll read that back
at eleven thirty tons more to talk about From the
(27:00):
Seahawks headquarters in Renton at the Virginia Mason Athletics Center
on ninety three point three KJRFM. HI, Welcome back, Greg
BELLVL the News Tribune. Christopher Kid with you. I'm trying
to write a trade story for the News Tribune dot
com during the breaks of the Seahawks trading with the
(27:21):
Tennessee Titans to acquire middle linebacker Ernest Jones, former Los
Angeles Rams middle linebacker in his first year with Tennessee
comes to Seattle. The Seahawks are giving the Titans Jerome Baker,
who had a one year contract from free agency this
spring with Seattle plus a fourth round pick to Tennessee
for Ernest Jones. That's today's big news from the Seahawks.
(27:42):
The other news from the Seahawks is that they activated
front Well designated to return to practice from the physical
enable to perform us starting right tackle Abe Lucas. We've
been waiting for this and talking about this for months.
He hasn't been on the practice field since January when
he last played. Then he had off season knee surgery.
They thought he'd be back by August. Here we are
(28:03):
at the end of October and he is back. He
is a twenty one day window at which he can
practice up to twenty one days of max, and after
the max of twenty one days, he either has to
be activated onto the fifty three man roster to play
or go on injured reserve for the rest of the
season as per the NFL rules on physically unable to
perform list players. So that's the two news big news items.
(28:24):
George Fan also designated return to practice off injured reserve.
He had started the opener for Lucas and then injured
Disney thirteen plays in Stone Foresight started the next five games,
and he mangled his hand it doesn't look like foresights
coming back this week. So the question now becomes is
George Fan ready to play right tackle physically able to
(28:44):
by Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills, and even if
he is, as Mike Durrell as the rookie six round
pick from Division two Finley, from his performance against Atlanta
earned a second starting roll on Sunday, and Mike MacDonald
would have asked him that on Monday said if we
have to go with If the words were have to
I think it was to go with Direll. They'd be
(29:05):
having all the confidence in him, and they liked how
he played and competed. I get the impression from his
words that perhaps it would be fat if he's ready
to play. The question will become by Sunday whether Fans
ready to play against Buffalo or not? Fournite four five
one and to tell him we do text line, we've
asked that question this week, what you thought of Mike
Durell's performance at right tackle and whether he earned a
second start. We also ask in the last segment who
(29:27):
you think the NFL's MVP for this season. So leading
MVP of the first seven games has been and it
might be Josh Allen from the Buffalo Bills and he
comes in here on Sunday four or five kickoff Channel
thirteen locally, and the Fox Number one crew Kevin Burkhardt,
Tom Brady as Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and Tom Arnaldi
(29:49):
are going to be on the call at Lumenfield for
Bills at Seahawks in the Fox featured single header game
on Sunday. It's a little bit of spotlight on the
Seahawks the Battle of Division Chris So, like I said,
this is their toughest game yet and they pull this off,
and the Mike McDonald era will have taken a quantum
leap in progress by winning on the road over division
(30:12):
leading Atlanta and then beating division leading Buffalo at home.
Speaker 3 (30:15):
It's a big if because they have a lot of
issues that are not smoothed out, and you mentioned MVP
likely coming to town. This is a game where I
think Josh Allen just reminds everybody I'm that guy, and
it could get real ugly for that secondary and the
run defense. However you want to look at it, I
think based on what Josh Allen has done, I think
that might continue because as I mentioned, through seven weeks.
(30:36):
The Seahawks have had issues everywhere, so it hasn't been
as good as you would like it to be. Granted,
they did beat a formidable Atlanta Falcon team, but I
think this is probably one of the top teams in
the league. And they're coming to your house and they
got a quarterback that can do a lot of damage
through the air and on the ground.
Speaker 2 (30:54):
That's just not easy to stop.
Speaker 3 (30:56):
But I know Mike McDonald, the defensive and the team
are working very hard to try to figure out how
to slow him down and make it difficult. That's all
you can ask for. How can we make a challenge
for Josh Allen? And they picked up Amari Cooper. They
didn't have that many receivers that people were know that
knew about this team outside of what Keon Coleman.
Speaker 1 (31:13):
Coleman looks like a stud. He's averaging twenty and a
half yards per catch.
Speaker 3 (31:16):
And now you have Mari Cooper that's gonna draw double teams.
Kind of what we talk about with DK, how DK
dictates coverage and he allows for teams to try to
quote unquote double him with different cloud coverages. Well, Marie
now was going to have that same responsibility for the
other receivers on the Bills because they don't have Stefon
Diggs anymore. So this team just becomes that much more
(31:38):
of a challenge. But it's all about who plays harder
and who wants it more on Sunday, which is very
cliche to say.
Speaker 1 (31:43):
But also the trenches, well, yeah, I mean, can win
it all they want, but they still have to defend
and have Woolen back and get healthy to play. You
mentioned about Witherspoon and blitzing. If they blitzed Witherspoon from
the middle of the field, Josh Allen targets tight En
Dalton McKay cocaid more than anybody on the team, thirty
seven targets so far the season, leads Buffalo. So that's
(32:04):
where he'll go. They'll throw where the blitz came from.
And that's the risk that Mike McDonald would have blitzing
Mike McDonald blitzing Devin Witherspoon. Their run game now, I
mean they've got Cook and they've got Davis Cook Hatch
five rushing touchdowns already this season. Yeah, this offense is
a challenge. Indeed, points per game fifth in the league.
Buffalo is and what Josh Allen is so good at
(32:28):
is not turning the ball over. As I said, no
interceptions so far in one hundred and ninety eight dropbacks.
He is why the Buffalo Bills are ten plus ten
to lead the league in turnover margin. You're gonna win
a lot of games at plus ten. The Seahawks even
with plus three in Atlanta, Chris, the Seahawks are still
minus three for the season. That's twenty first in the NFL.
Speaker 3 (32:49):
Starting the season with those teams that they face and
that first forcing so not forcing a lot of turnovers
I think kind of hurt them in that regard because
they should have done far better.
Speaker 2 (32:58):
But I get it.
Speaker 1 (32:59):
They had no turnovers forced in the three game losing
streak's turnovers. That's the main reason.
Speaker 3 (33:05):
That's very hard to win games when you're not getting
the ball getting extra possessions for your offense. That that
can make a break a team right there. But a
lot of it is luck. But the got Real got
a little bit of luck against the Falcons fumble and
then two straight interceptions right after that.
Speaker 1 (33:20):
Overthrows through receivers hands.
Speaker 3 (33:21):
That's what you need, and they that gives them confidence
because they know they can do it. Ray Sean Jenkins,
I think three weeks ago talked about, hey, we need
to get more turnovers, you can get interceptions, we got
to make plays, and two weeks later they end up
doing it. So I know they're confident they can get
the ball from Josh Allen. I'm sure they say we
want to be the first team to get an interception
on Josh Allen. That's probably the quote unquote game plan.
(33:44):
You have the number, what's Josh Allen number?
Speaker 1 (33:47):
Again, Greg, twelve and zero twelve touchdown zero?
Speaker 2 (33:49):
No, No, I'm saying which is number? Is it number seventeen?
Speaker 3 (33:52):
Yes, So on the board, the defense has number seventeen
starred or circled, and they have the stats twelve touchdowns,
zero interceptions. I'm sure they're saying we are gonna be
the team to get that one interception or two interceptions.
We're gonna get after him. We're gonna make it tough
for him, We're gonna defend. So I know coming in
they are excited for this matchup and it should be
a fun game.
Speaker 1 (34:11):
Tex line from the seven to one eight MVP Derrick Henry,
that's a good call.
Speaker 2 (34:15):
Guy has almost.
Speaker 1 (34:16):
Nine hundred yards rushing through seven games. Yeah, running twenty
one miles an hour. That's the other night.
Speaker 2 (34:24):
Thank god the Ravens are not on the Seahawks schedule.
Speaker 1 (34:26):
Yeah, exactly. Yeah, the Ravens offense is rolling. That's a
good call from the seven to one A from New
York City, Brooklyn, Bronx, Taten Island. I know the seven
to one Eighthew well seasoned, Okay, I went to school
about an hour from there. Yeah, you know some people
from there coming up next. Hugh Mellon joins us as
he does every Wednesday at eleven o'clock. I'm gonna ask
him what makes Josh Allen so good and what the
(34:47):
Seahawks can do to possibly slow him down or stop him.
