hour two of our Monday, Juneseventeenth show on ninety three point three KJRFM
at eleven thirty. We'll read backyour text on the telelem We'll do text
line four nine four five one. There's a good one for Gary Washburn's former
Seattle SuperSonics beat writer with the PostIntelligencer. For those of you who have
(00:27):
been around town more than a dayor two, Gary joins us next from
Boston, Boston Go beat writer ofthe Celtics, where he's been to cover
Game five tonight of the NBA Finals. He'll join us in a couple minutes
after headlines brought to you by VenueKings dot Com. Our first place Mariners
did what we talked about all lastweek. They swept to second place Rangers
in three straight games. They movedto eight and a half games up on
Texas, nine games up on Houstonin the American League West. It's Seattle's
(00:51):
largest division lead since the one hundredand sixteen wins season of two thousand and
one. Guessterday Logan Gilbert was dominatedeight innings, two hits, no runs,
no walks nine strikeouts, his eighthstrikeout on the top of the eighth
with the ninety seven miliner of fastball. His ninth k was a splitter dove
out of the zone on his onehundred and first pitch. Gilbert now thirty
(01:12):
three to zero in his career whengetting at least three runs of support.
Lockley's second career home runs fill infirst base for ty Frantz was really all
the runs that he needed in afive to nothing win. Bryson Discembo put
shots in the leaves and trees andinto a bunker on the eighteenth hole with
Pinehurs number two yesterday in North Carolina, Yet he still won the US Open
(01:34):
with a par on that final holeafter Rory mccer, where he missed a
short putt that would have forced aplayoff. Dishamba shot from fifty five yards
out of the bunker then four feetof the hole on eighteen was he said
the shot of his life. Hewins the US Open in a career revival
for Bryson Discembo. Seahawks are offuntil July twenty sixth start of training camp.
(01:56):
They had their last mandatory mini campin offseason practice Wednesday, and then
coach Mike McDonald sent him home aday early, made a lot of players
happy and raised his popularity for that. The NHL Stanley Cup Final will go
to a Game five tomorrow in Florida, four to thirty pre game five pm
puck drop here on ninety three pointthree kJ RFN. That's because Edmonton won
in a big way Game four inEdmonton on Saturday eight to one. The
(02:21):
Sounders beat Minnesota on Saturday two nothing. They now hold the final playoff spot
in the Western Conference after months ofnot being able to score a goal against
anyone. Sounders play at Houston Wednesday, five pm pre game with Jackson Feltz
in a five to thirty game starton our sister station nine point fifty A.
M. Charles Barkley announced late Fridaynight on the NBA TV postgame show
that after Game four of the Finalsthat he next season will be his last
(02:45):
with the NBA on TNT and he'sgoing to quit retire from television after that.
Next year is the final year ofTNT's NBA contract. They're expected to
lose it to NBC, and theNBA Finals resumed tonight. As we mentioned,
Game five is in Boston and theCeltics can hoist their eighteenth NBA title
banner with a winn night over theMavericks. They have a three to one
(03:05):
series lead. The status of sevenfoot three center Christat Porzingis has been the
story in Boston the last couple ofdays. We have my friend Gary Washburn
on the line from Boston, theBoston Globe Celtics beat writer. They'll be
covering Gay five tonight. He's takingtime out on game day to join us
on ninety three point three kJ RFMG Watch. Thanks for joining us again.
(03:27):
I'm gonna ask you right off thetop, do you think Porzingis is
gonna play? And how much ofa fact do you think that's gonna be
to Game five? Yeah, Idon't think he'll be much of a factor.
I think he's gonna give it ago and see what happens, and
if he's okay, they might playhim in short stretches. But I wouldn't
expect some type of performance that hehad in Game one. They're gonna have
(03:49):
to probably win this thing without muchof a contribution. This is a pretty
significant injury, although you can playon it short term, and he's not
been the most durable guy in hiscareer, So asking him to play in
a high level NBA Finals game witha pretty significant ankle injury is asking a
lot. What exactly is it?Gary, Do you know that they have
(04:13):
they've given you any information? Whatit is? Said? Rare is all
I've read. Yeah, it's akind of a it's a tendon that the
inside of the ankle, the ballthat's in the inside of your ankle.
Uh, there's kind of a bandthat holds a tendon in there, and
the band has been, uh,kind of dislidged, So the tendon has
(04:33):
been dislocated. So you know, you have to wrap it up, put
a brace on it, and hopeyou can go out there and run.
But you know basketball lateral movement, you know, jumping, running and all
that. It's eventually going to requiresurgery. And it is a rare injury.
It's usually classified as a badly explainedankle, but in this case,
(04:55):
they found out what it is andthey have to make sure that that tendon
doesn't continue this. Okay, Soit's kind of a risky thing. If
you wrap it up and you justhave to pray that it doesn't just locate.
He can probably play on it.But we'll see, you know,
after four or five days of Charlie'sdealing with this, whether he can give
it a go. When you lookat the Celtics bench, is it enough
(05:17):
because I know in game three,I think Tatum and Brown combined for sixty
one points, and I thought thebench was okay. But will it be
enough to win it tonight against aDallas mass team that is extremely hungry and
if Luca and Kyrie dropped forty each, it might get interesting. Yeah.
I mean, I think they haveenough scoring. It's just defense, playing
(05:40):
the game the right way, rebounding, getting fifty to fifty balls, you
know, just those basics. Theyjust kind of let go of the roping.
Game four, they got frustrated thegame was played a little bit on
a more physical level. You know, they didn't come out with the focus.
I think they were kind of toointense, too much pressure on himself
out. Everybody had been talking about, oh, you know, no tunes
(06:03):
are ever to come back from three, Oh deficits sleep them, let's get
this done and all that. Ithink that was their philosophy, and then
it came out that Dallas played reallywell, decided just played their worst game
probably in a year, So nowthey've got to come back bounce back from
that. I do think they haveenough component, but they you know,
just because they're at home does notmean that they're going to be aokay.
(06:26):
I mean, they've got to executeand they've got to play better than they
did in game four. Did youexpect at least somewhat of a letdown in
game four? Not a blowout thatwe all witnessed, but did you think,
Okay, they might lay off thegas a little bit because they know
they have cushion to go back homeand end it. Well. I don't
think that they were like, well, we could just close us out at
home. I think that they reallytried to win. But I think Dallas
(06:50):
didn't want to be swept at home. You know, they had they had
kind of blown Game four. Imean we started game three, they were,
you know, trail by twenty oneand they can't come back fall short,
and they had been in there forthe last couple of days in terms
of being down three oh. AndI also think it's psychological if you look
at the NHL, you know,Floya's up three to oh and then losing
(07:12):
eight to one to Edmonton. There'sobviously some kind of psychological thing when you
have a close out game on theroad and you're up to nothing, it's
hard to sweep team, you know, regardless of what kind of series it
is, because teams are just playingdesperate. So now you know, the
pressure shifts the more of Boston becauseyou don't want to go back to Dallas
for a game six, and thena narrative becomes, oh, you know,
(07:36):
could this happen? They come back, and you don't really want that,
so it would be who we're ableto close it out tonight? That's
the voice of Gary Washburn, BostonGlobe beat writer for the Celtics, former
Sonics beat writer for the Seattle PostIntelligence, so you might remember the voice
and the name, joining us againhere on ninety three point three KJRFM.
Gary, what's the vibe like inboth Boston? It's a way end of
(07:58):
an error for the Patriots. TheSocks have been down for a while.
It feels like the Bruins were eliminatedmonths ago from the Stanley Cup playoffs.
What is It's always been a Celtictown, even when the Celtics were down.
What's the vibe like? Has itbeen off the hook Celtics or they
getting nervous. Well, there's athere's a little nervousness and anxiety. There's
an excitement Saw three. You know, I mean they want to close this
(08:20):
out. They want their championship sixteenyears obviously to the to the actually to
the day since they clinkeed the championshipat eight. You know, the town
and you know this is a townthat's used the championships, especially in the
two thousands. Obviously that's from thePatriots and the Red Sox really picked up.
(08:41):
You know, it's been five yearssince the Patriots won that Super Bowl
against the Rams, so you know, this is kind of a it's a
hungry city. You know, obviouslysaid the Patriots have a rebuild. The
Red Sox are kind of that fivehundred trying to battle for a while.
Card and the Bruins were knocked outin the second round against against Florida,
(09:05):
so you know, the hope isthe Celtics. So yeah, there's a
lot of anticipation, excitement, it'sgoing to be wild tonight. But I
also think there's a lot of anxietybecause this team has fallen short before.
So it's kind of an uh ohfactor, nobody's taking anything for granted.
Gary Washburn, Boston Globe joining usfrom the NBA Finals Game five here on
(09:26):
ninety three point three KJRFM. Ifyou recognize the name, Yes, he
was formerly the Sonics speat writer fortheir last years before they moved to Oklahoma
City. For the Seattle PI.Gary, we had a text message on
the tell them we're due text linesaying they wanted me to ask you this
question. Please ask Gary if workingat the PI with the with its globe
(09:48):
gave him Good Superman the movie DailyPlanet vibes, and then he wanted to
do to compare living to living inLos Angeles to Bay Area, California.
You just compare that to living inSeattle. Compare that to living in Boston.
Well, oh boy, Seattle isa great place to live. The
(10:11):
rain was overrated. I learned that, uh, you know, the rain
wasn't that much. That's all youreally hear about if you don't live there.
I enjoyed it. I was disappointedwhen the Sonics sets because I thought
that was kind of a fabric ofthe city. I thought that the city
was a more entertaining place to mewhen the Sonics were there, and they
were you know, hosting, hostingthe Lakers and hosting the Tavs, and
(10:35):
you know those Friday nights in Decemberand January where there was always something going
on in the Sonics where you know, the NBA was was bustling and his
obviously before the NHL moved in andbefore really the Sounders got kicking, uh
with soccer. But yeah, Ithought it was a fair place that if
I think Boston, uh, it'skind of a bigger version of Seattle in
(10:56):
a sense, it's a little bigger, but it's it's definitely comparable cities.
Uh, they're trying to vote, you know, like Boston, I didn't
know rut out the water. Uh, there's a lot to do outdoors,
and like there's in Seattle. Youknow, you can go out to New
Hampshire and Maine, Vermont. Youknow, you're close to a lot of
different places in Boston. Uh.But yeah, Seattle was with a cool
(11:22):
place, with a cool place tolive. I just I was, I
was really, you know, youtry to get too mostly vested. But
when the Sonics left, I thoughtthat I thought the city really lost something
and I hopefully you can get itback. He did, You're right about
that, Gary, And there arelisteners, fans, generations of people that
want the Sonics back, as youtold us last time you joined us a
couple of weeks ago. You thinkthat's gonna happen with NBA expansion? Has
(11:46):
been there any talk at the finalsabout when the new Media Writes deal will
get done? And I I sortof heard Adam Silver at the start of
the series Tampa down expectations of imminentexpansion. Is that what you read?
Well? I think he doesn't wantto get city's exciting, but I will
say that the Seattle is like numberone on their list for expansion. And
(12:07):
I think that there's a level ofguilt that the league has had for years
about leaving Seattle and the circumstances andkind of not that Oklahoma City is not
a good market for the league. It's a good small market. They've had
their success, you know, butjust the circumstances of how everything went down
and Shelt selling the team and withinsix months and selling it to an outside
(12:31):
buyer, and kind of that, you know, infamous legislature State legislature meeting
with David Stern and Stern kind offeeling embarrassed because he felt like he got
humiliated out of that meeting when whenit was time to ask for money for
a new arena. So there's alot of circumstances and probably in many cases
(12:52):
pettiness that went down during that time. And I think the league regrets leaving
Seattle. I don't think they knewit wasn't a really good decision, but
in that time, when Stern feltlike he owed Clay bitted something for bailing
Remember he bailed the New Orleans youknow, back then the Horn after in
(13:16):
Oklahoma City, he felt like heowed bit at something and kind of arranged
it and when Seattle kind of botchedevery opportunity to keep the team. So
I do think they feel like there'ssomething owe to Seattle and in Seattle.
Obviously I haven't been to the newarena yet, but obviously it's refurbished and
(13:37):
ready to go for an NBA team. They've done what they needed to do
to bring back a team, becauseobviously a new arena like the NBA would
not have come back to Seattle toplay the key again, right, it
had to be refurbished, it hadto be revitalized. And what unfortunately what
happened, no one from Seattle, because remember the Portland already built the Rose
(13:58):
Guards right and built that news builttheir arena, and no one from Seattle
even went down there to check itout to see what's okay. This is
what the league wants because Denver hadbuilt now it's baul arena they had back
there. He is a Pepsi centerand built their new arena, and the
politician Seattle did not even kind ofshow any interest in Okay, this is
(14:22):
what the league is looking for.And that's what I think the discommunication started,
the stubborness, the pettiness. SoI do think Seattle's first in their
list because I do think the NBArealized there was a partial fault for that
and they want to make up forit. That's the voice of Gary Washman,
Boston go beat writer, former Sonicsbeat writer for the Seattle PI,
(14:45):
now with the Boston Globe. Fromthe NBA Finals in Boston, ninety three
point three kids, y are bigal seventeen year ven. He's only averaging
seven points in this finals. Startedhis career in two thousand and seven.
GUIs I think you were covering theOrioles back then. Man, It's been
a while, Yeah, what ishis importance or talk about his leadership and
(15:07):
how he can help this team accomplishtheir goal of winning another NBA finals.
Well, I think he's gonna needto be good. If for Zingis can't
play, you know, or can'tdeliver to contribute as much as you'd like,
He's got to be there as arim protector, rebounder, he's got
to be a shooter. He's gotto play. He just can't be out
there running the court. I mean, he's got to have some contributions on
(15:30):
both sides of the ball. Sothere's a lot going on in terms of
you know, when you this sportsZingis, he's such as the people call
him a unicorn, and then that'spretty much what he is. On the
floor. You gotta have guys stepup, and Dallas has two active bigs
and Derek Wively and Daniel Gafford andal gonna have to compete harder and better
than he did in Game four.So they're gonna need a lot from him.
(15:54):
He just turned thirty eight years old, Uh, you know, looking
for his first NBA championship. Ithink you know, he he's worked hard
toward it, and I think he'llhe'll be one of the more grateful people
to win one, you know, because that's kind of the only thing he
hasn't done in his career. Yep, is that a role is his role?
What was expected in the game thisyear for how Horford or is he
(16:14):
had to do this because the persingashis injury and other things, well,
I think they I mean, hestill has enough energy to play. I
mean he's very taking great care ofhis body. You know, thirty eight
for an NBA player is kind ofa you know, not a there's not
any thirty eight year olds who geta chance to play. It's not like
Major League Baseball where you can playinto up until your early forties. And
there's not many lebron you know whocan play productively Killer forty. So the
(16:41):
fact is is that a lot wasdepending on re light on Horford because you
know, the new Portsinas was gonnabe good for maybe sixty games well,
which which he gave him, youknow, fifty five sixty games. So
you don't want to play you know, Horford too many minutes. But they
do lie on him, probably heavierthan most players of age, because he's
(17:03):
still very active, reductive, takesgreat care of his body, and can
get it done. Not as oftenin longer stretches. When you're playing forty
minutes, it's not a good thing. If you're playing twenty eight to thirty
minutes, he can still be productive. Gary, When we talked to you
about three weeks ago ahead of Gameone and I asked for your prediction and
who you think is going to winfinals MVP. If I'm not mistaken,
(17:23):
it was Jason Tatum, Right,Yeah, I believe so. I don't
remembres a long time. So withthat being said, I understand that Jalen
Brown has definitely taken the next step. Are you a little bit surprised that
Jason Tatum. I'm not saying he'sbeen a disappointment, but he hasn't lived
up to be the number one guyon the team, and it's been Jaylen
(17:44):
Brown so far in this NBA Finals. I'm not surprised. I mean they
made a concerned effort to stop him. I mean Tatum, you know,
doubles trapping to get the ball inhis hands, make sure he doesn't he
leads, you know, crowds everytime he drives the ball. So he
became more of a distributor now hisshot, you know, hasn't been going
(18:07):
down either, so that's been aletdown for the teams. I thought he
was actually pretty good in Game three, he had thirty one points. Game
four, nobody played well. Everybody, everybody was awful. But the MVP
potential of this serison is close.I think that Tatum comes up with one
of those legacy games, he mightbe able to take it, and the
same with Jalen Brown. So Ithink it's kind of even right now now
(18:30):
if Dallas wins the next two gamesand those games there and anything goes,
But for now, I think it'sbetween Tatum and Brown and probably who has
whoever has the best game tonight.Gary, I know you're busy, man,
you got a game NBA Finals gameto cover tonight. I appreciate you
taking the time. I hope foryour sake personally and professionally, you get
an NBA Championship parade to cover herein a couple of days and maybe you
(18:55):
don't have to go down to onehundred degree Dallas again. But thanks a
lot. Enjoy your time and thatgood luck on the writing and the call.
Oh no problems. Good to talkto you again. Thank you.
Gary Washburn, Boston Globe Celtics beatwriter from Boston. The takeaway, of
course Seattle locally for that from thatcall is that he said I asked them
about to talk around the finals.Adam Silver talked about the prospects of expansion
(19:18):
at the start of the final seriesand he said, quote, Seattle is
number one on their list for expansion. He said, quote there is a
level of guilt for the Sonics leavingwhat is it eighteen sixteen years ago?
Now, I think his quote was, I think the league regrets leaving Seattle.
They knew it wasn't a really gooddecision. So expect here after the
(19:41):
finals for the league to announce anew NBA media rights deal that has long
been even Adam Silver himself the commissioner, saying that is the trigger before they
will consider expansion, in that Seattleand Las Vegas the overwhelming favorites to get
the two expansion teams in the NBA. If that happens here this summer,
our own Ian Furness has been toldby people with the Kraken who are intimately
(20:04):
built the building the climate Bludgerina withthe NBA in mind, that the NBA
could start play here as soon asthe fall of twenty twenty seven, so
that was the local takeaway. Healso says Porzingis probably won't play tonight because
of his ankle injury, and thatAl Horford, sixty nine years old,
needs to step up in a bigway and get them a title so they
(20:26):
don't have tonight, so they don'thave to go back to Dallas for a
game six four nine, four tofive one. The telemo text line,
when it's game time, it's Tullytime. Your reaction to that. Gary
Washburn the latest and a long lineof people who are plugged into the NBA
who say the Sonics are coming back. It's a matter of not if,
but when, and that the mediarights deal is the trigger for the win.
(20:47):
Your reaction to that, Your reactionto the Mariners being in a place
they have not been in twenty threeyears since the one hundred and sixteen win
season of two thousand and one. That's eight and a half games up in
the American League West. When wecome back, we'll read back your text,
as we do every day at thistime on ninety three point three KJRFM
Live from the R and R FoundationSpecialists Broadcast Studio. Now back to the
(21:12):
Greg Bell Show with Christopher Kidd onYour Home for the Huskies and the cruckin
Sports Radio ninety three point three kjrFM. I'd suggest you listen to the
Rhart RADIOPP for something other than that, maybe how the Greg Bell Show,
Christopher Kidd or anything else on ninetythree point three KJRFM. You search the
(21:34):
iHeart Radio app for ninety three pointthree KJRFM. You get all of our
podcasts of all of our shows, including the conversation we just had with Gary
Washburn and the Boston Globe at theNBA Finals, who said Seattle was number
one on the league's priority to getan expansion team back the Sonics. The
Sonics would be back in town, perhaps as soon as three years from now.
(21:56):
We'll see. That's on be upof the podcast after our show INDs
on iHeartRadio app in ninety three pointthree KJRFM. Yes, the music is
back, which means time is back. To read your text and the telemore
do text line when it's game time. It's Tully time four nine four five
one, starting things off from thefour to two five. This is from
Jim Sorry, Gary Washburn. Bostonhas won titles and all four major sports
(22:22):
or just outside of this last decade. They can suck it, go MAVs.
So someone does not want Boston towin because they've been winning and everything
else, So why do they needto win another championship? Okay, I'm
not mad at that. From thefour to two five. Once again,
much love to the best morning showaround. Appreciate the love. Thanks for
listening. Than man, Can weplease speak on Service? He is not
(22:42):
This is all coplist by the way, he is not a good manager.
We would have been. We wouldhave seven more wins in a row right
now if we would have actually managedand bunt, have a feel for the
game and not go off analytics. We will never win a championship with him
as our manager. With some strongwords there, Joel. They've never won
(23:03):
a championship with any manager. ScottService eight and a half game lead in
the American League West. He isanalytically bent. The organization is that way,
and analytics don't like bunting. Theythink it's giving up outs. They
just don't like it. Whatever algorithmsand numbers and all that suggests, you
just don't give away out the samereason a lot of analytics don't like stealing
(23:26):
bases. There's a risk reward there. They think it's not worth the risk
of risking it out to stay onbase and hit a home run. That's
often what analytics will tell you inthis day and age of baseball. Sticking
with baseball, Greg, you askedwho has been surprising for the Manners this
season? Which player from the four, two, five? Someone checks in
and says, I had no faithin Trent Thornton. He's been great.
(23:48):
That's a good call. Thornton's beena primary setup guy and Service has used
him in increasingly leveraged roles. Yeah, Trent Thornton, I agree, That's
not something you would have thought wasa big part of the team. And
he's become a more dependable setup guy. And we've seen the Mariners have had
some trouble there. Getting two munoshas been tricky. Now they're using munos
(24:12):
all over the place late in thegame. Wherever the best hitters are for
another team is when they put munosin. Whether it's the eighth inning or
the ninth inning, it doesn't matter. And I heard the guys this morning,
Chuck and Buck talking about you couldsay that the actual true closer right
now is Ryan Stanic because they're justtrying to get munos against the best guys
they can get. But whether that'sthe seventh, eighth or ninth inning.
(24:36):
Thornton his last five appearances has allowedonly one run, one turned run,
He's only walked one. He's gotsix strikeouts in his last five appearances.
So yeah, he's been somebody thatthey he'll get more high leverage stuff if
he keeps pitching like that. Didyou see the sad news regarding Mike Brumley?
Did? Yeah? So Mike Brumleypassed away. He was killed in
(24:57):
a car accident in Mississippi, Soformer Mariner, Mariners coach I want to
say in two thousand thirteen, ifI'm not mistaken around that time. So
that was some unfortunate news. Thata textra sentence, so he didn't know.
Yes, Mike Bumley has passed awayin an accident in Mississippi. Was
it today I believe or this weekend? Over the weekend? So sad music
(25:18):
or sad story there To get backto the Mariners. This is from the
five to nine. We all knowwe need another big bat, but we
also need to see if that'll work. Question Mark, are the Mariners doing
okay without it? I would sayno, they're not doing okay with that.
Their offense is still struggling. Idon't want to I don't want to
see a scenario where the ms don'tget a big bat and then they're out
(25:45):
and their first playoff appearance. That'swhat I don't want to see. If
they get a big bat and theydon't make the playoffs, Okay, something
else is obviously, we'll see there'smore to the issue. But I think
you got to get a big batand swing for the fences. They're gonna
face better pitching in the playoffs.Obviously, playoff teams get there, they
don't usually get there with five ers. That's true. Keith Miller checks
(26:07):
in from the two five to three. Best music in the Game always gets
me in the mood to text hashtagporn jam to text, I've got to
be clarified that. Well, thankyou there, sir, We appreciate it.
Let's see. This is from Michaelfrom the two five three. We
are supposed to beat on the losingteams and compete with the rest Gilbert Kirby
(26:30):
and Miller for our last three startersfor our best of five series. Let's
fluffing go. I think Louis Castillo'sin that you're not going to not start
Castuo in a playoff game. Hewas nails of that Blue Jay series.
Yes, we talked about Barkley earlierin the show, and he's basically said
(26:51):
that he's not going to do NBAinside, inside the NBA no more anymore,
next season, any television, right, he's going to retire for He's
going to retire. So someone fromthe four two five Barkley preparing for a
run at president of the United States, that is a little extreme. I
think Greg's point earlier about him runningfor something locally in Alabama, senator,
whatever the case may be cool, but president, I don't know. I'm
(27:15):
not jumping in those those waters.I have no clue. It would not
be the most unqualified candidate for presidentwe've had recently. Oh here we go,
Keith? Really, man, didyou see the Seahawks to Twitter posting
that DK dunk Still believe Chris andfriends could hang in a pickup game against
Seahawks? All right, So youmean to tell me if I just posted
a video of me dunking a basketball, I am now considered good serious question.
(27:37):
If Greg just goes down and dunksit, are you saying, oh
my gosh, Greg is he's anathlete. I'm not saying Greg can or
cannot dunk, but can Let's let'snot know hops, Let's not gawk over
the fact that he's dunking. DJis flat lagger beard, No Hops,
DK is six' four in aphenomenal athlete. If he's if you're gonna
ask him to just catch him dunk, yes he can do that. If
(27:59):
you're asking him to dribble and allthese other things. Okay, he looked
okay. Were they playing defense?Sure, a little bit of defense,
but I get it. He lookedfine. I'm not saying we would win.
My only argument was we would scorepoints. As a member of the
Seahawks beat as a media member ofthe Seattle Seahawks, we would get absolutely
annihilated trying to play anybody from theSeahawks and any Seahawks player group of players
(28:25):
in basketball. The period against TyraLockett put the story absolutely annihilated. Marcus
disagrees with the Senate with the statementmade earlier that Service is a bad manager.
Fire him. Marcus says he's apretty good, great manager. Most
teams work with analytics, which Ihate, but they do and I think
that's a fair point. A lotof teams work with analytics. I obviously
am not in the room when ScottServis looks to one of his guys and
(28:48):
says, hey, thoughts on thiswhat you would do here? But I
know that's the point, does it? That's the point, though a manager.
Do we really want a manager havingan analytics dude on his shoulder and
he's got a double think before hedoes something in a game. That should
be something you go before the seasonand say, here's our organizational philosophy,
here's when we're gonna bunt never, here's when we're gonna We're just gonna But
(29:10):
you don't need a guy during games, which seems to be the perception here.
I'm not close enough to the Marinersrecently to know if that's actually the
case, that there's somebody in thedugout giving him an analytics Here's what the
analytics say, Skip. I don'tknow that that's happening, but if it
is, I would think that isintrusive, and that's not something a major
league baseball manager should have to dealwith in game. He should be already
(29:30):
dealing with his personnel as general managerand his the personnel side upstairs before the
season starts. To know all thatI would those that. I'll look it
up and see if I can findstories about that. But I can't Bob
believe that there's somebody in the dugoutgiving him. And here's what the analytics
say. That should not happen. To me. I'm an old school baseball
(29:52):
guy. It's been twenty years sinceI covered it. That would not fly
in the Major League Baseball dugouts thatI covered. Let's see a few more.
Where is it that I just saw? Is a good one? Oh?
From the four two five can seeit now. The Mariners will do
just enough to win a division.Service will say offense is coming around and
we don't have any bats. Thenthe playoffs, offense struggles and a postseason
(30:15):
and we say, oh, weshould have hadded a bad Maybe next year
very well said as possible. Thatis possible now. Michael from the two
by three says, we want thebest three to start right now. Logan,
George and Bryce are the three.Castillo to me is not looking like
an ace as those three are. That's true right now, but in the
(30:37):
playoffs they are gonna Louise Castillo isin a playoff rotation period and if they
have to go to four, whichwould be a stretch because you have travel
days and you don't need four starters. So who you taking out of the
three? I'm taking out Barce.Who are you taking out? Yeah?
Okay, well we're all in thesame I am too. Sounds good.
This is from the four two fiveDK dribble a basketball looks like a kid
(31:00):
going way too fast downhill on hisbike. Well, I think that makes
a lot of sense there. Let'ssee from the two six, I can
drive a car, doesn't mean Ican win the NDY five hundred. What
is that a reference to? Ithink it's regarding to basketball and DK.
I'm not sure because I never saidanything that. Basically, I was making
(31:22):
the assumption that if I dunked abasketball, I'd be this astounding athlete and
I would be a problem on thecourt because the video show Duque doing what
dunking. He hit won three andI think the rest were just dunks.
Oh, I owe you guys. The Alex Mayer tweet from yesterday's shoot let's
I forgot to bring it up beforewe get to eaan go ahead and loger
Gilbert's fourteen year, fourteen career MajorLeague starts with a goatee. That is,
(31:47):
from August of twenty twenty two tothe end of the season, from
late August twenty twenty three to earlySeptember twenty twenty three, and from this
month June fifth to now. LoganGilbert with a go t has an ERA
of two point one point five andeighty eight innings pitched with ninety four strikeouts
(32:07):
eleven walks. Go te Logan Gilbertfourteen games with a goatee, two point
one five ERA, eighty eight inningspitched, ninety four strikeouts, eleven walks.
Give him a statue, go tthat man, I think we need
a Randy Johnson statue before we haveanybody else. That's fine, we can,
you know, get all the legends. But then Logan, he's somewhere
(32:29):
on there. Logan Gilbert with agoatee, that's that's statue needs to have
a go tea on it. Accordingto how Yeah, for sure, what
else we got? Eh? Let'ssee here is the You see the mayor,
I see your head dodge and leftand right. You see him in
there? I don't, but thatdoesn't mean he's not here. Was that
the last one, Yes, sir, oh yeah we did it? Or
(32:51):
did the ok? Okay? Seerip right? Yeah? The Mayor and
Maple Valley, the Great and Fernessafter a day off, joins us next
to ninety three point three a jR. Fund. Welcome back, ninety
(33:22):
three point three kJ R F M. Greg Bell of the News Tribute and
Christopher Kidd with you finishing up oursecond hour, and now we welcome in
the Great Infness the Mayor of MapleValley, fresh off of golf course in
Father's Day and everything else. AndI don't know golf obviously as well as
you do, and they'll follow ita whole lot. But I always thought
Rice and Dish was a villa thebad guy. He was. He's everybody's
(33:44):
zero and the people the people's people'schampion. I don't even know Bobby Caster
is going to join us at too. I've got to ask him that.
I you know, I watched twohours of post Game. I love my
favorite, you know, show towatch is not Sports Center. I can't
stand that anymore. So I watchlive from and it was us opening.
They did two hours. Paige McKenzie, the former Husky. He did great,
by the way, shots or shedid great job this week. She
(34:06):
filled in for Brandal Shambilie most ofthe week. Who's was on the call
actually the booth, and so theybumped Page up. She did a great
job. But the I don't knowwhere when and when and where it changed.
I always thought the guy was fine. You know. Part of it
was him and Koepka had this littlerivalry going, and Brooks is just kind
of a jackass, and for somereason people so gravitated to him as opposed
to Bryson. So you're either onlike team Bryson or team Brooks. And
(34:29):
then they both go to Live Tour, and everyone that first went to the
Live Tour everyone hated those guys, right, right, And now that's kind
of come around because at some pointwe're gonna have a little kumbaya here and
they're going to come back together. But yeah, I've always found him entertaining
and pretty likable. He's weird.I mean, everything is just the science
that he uses, the numbers heuses, how he's reinvented his body.
(34:52):
But more importantly, like you know, every golf club is the same length,
every shaft is the same and that'sdifferent than any other golf for he
just does things differently, and golfdoesn't like different. He said that he
made that shot out of the bunkerbecause he be longer, is longer longer
sandwich. So yeah, so II golf doesn't like different and golf doesn't
(35:14):
like something out of the box ornot in the norm unless it's Tiger Woods.
That's the only thing they've ever liked. It's not normal and it doesn't
fit into the typical box. Andin this I mean it's a good case
in point the course. You know, when rave's about Pinehurst number two,
I a lot of us out inthe West Coast go it's an ugly looking
course that looks every hole looks thesame. But you can't say that because
(35:37):
golf golf media has a group thinkmentality of like, oh, you can't,
can't you can't criticize Pinehurst. It'sPinehurst number two. The history here,
Payne Stewart, Oh my gosh, what do you say? Whatever,
you guys, it's it's so,I don't know. He's a fascinating topic
though, because much like Caitlin Clarkin the w NBA Tiger and Golf way
back in the day, one person, Wayne Gretzky, can change an entire
(36:00):
sport, right, and maybe Brysonis that next guy to do that.
I don't know, we'll see.The NFL is so big. I can't
think of one player that would changetime. I've done a topic. We've
talked about this before. The NFLis weird that it's there isn't a player
in the league that sells a tickethimself, but a brand does. Like
(36:21):
the brand sells tickets, and notjust the brand of the shield, but
the teams. Right, So yeah, the NFL NFL is a different You
just put them in a different box, right, He just kind of yeah,
And I mean the NBAS has youknow, individuals will sell tickets,
but the problem is, and we'llfind this out in two or three years,
right. So Gary Washerman was talkinglike we've all been saying the NBA,
You've got maybe guys to sell tickets, but you don't know if those
(36:44):
guys are going to play on agiven night in an a two game regular
season. So that's true management.Yeah, early with the friends music,
I need load management all the time. I need only all need load management.
And belated happy you have Father's Dayto you do you have a good
one as well? I did.My son came down from the mountains and
we went to dinner at Dukes onthe deck and can't go that. First
(37:06):
time ever been to Dukes. I'vebeen in this town for twenty place.
Wait what yeah? Really? Really? What'd you think? Loved it?
The menu varied stuffed salmon with craband a chowder chowder. Fantastic. Yeah,
my son and I a terreine ofchowder. There you go. Why
wouldn't exactly? Why would you not? We talked about how the Mariners are
(37:28):
on the spot. They haven't beensince two thousand and one. They haven't
been an eight and a half gamelead in division since the one hundred and
sixteen win season. What were youdoing in one one? I was in
I think fifth grade? Fourth oryeah, sorry, no, I'm fine
with it. I it's no,it's I'm a young gun, I know.
(37:49):
No, think about that. You'rethirty two, right, exactly.
I'll be thirty two in July. But yes, think about that for a
second, right, fifth grade?Yeah, the last time they were I
was covering the A's that year andwe came in to see you. Remember
this, It was front page thelocal King five and Como and all the
newscasters were at the yard and atthe stave Go Field broadcasting live and it
(38:12):
was above the fold in the Seattleevery game story that year was and it
was sold out every night a Tuesdaynight, A's Mariners, forty five thousand
people. It well, they weretwo years into the new stadium, right,
that was part of the ballpark beingfresh with all those games. So
yeah, but yeah, them beingvery good help. So yeah, it
was like the Seahawks were in theSuper Bowl year. Who yeah, that's
forgotten. Yeah, they're gone forsix weeks. Today, Yeah, we'll
(38:36):
talk. We've got Molly Wop comingup at one o'clock today. I don't
know what those guys are gonna dowith themselves. If you can't be better
than that, Cleveland's coming. It'sgonna be brutal. We're gonna get killed
in Cleveland, and and we'll seewhat they have to say. At one
o'clock, Chris and Nate will behere and then Bobby Casper's go to join
us. We'll talk a little bitmore about Bryson and from Real Golfreadio at
two o'clock today. That's coming upon the Ian Fernest Show. At twelve
(38:58):
to three Jesaman and Andrews just off. She's getting ready for some wedding stuff.
That's right, Yeah, another weddingon top of Dougar. That's Ian
Fornas from twelve to three, GregBell, the News tributing, and Christopher
Kidd. Thank you for listening. We'll be here again tomorrow at tend to
noon on ninety three point three kJR f M
